- 0:22Speaker 1: by First Light. Whether you're checking trail cams, hanging deer stands,
- 0:25Speaker 1: or scouting for el First Light has performance apparel to
- 0:28Speaker 1: support every hunter in every environment. Check it out at

- 0:35Speaker 1: I t E dot com. Just for your listeners out there.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Sometimes something will be happening before we're ready, and someone
- 0:46Speaker 1: will say something and I'll think that that should be
- 0:48Speaker 1: in the show. And Chili's sharing with us about getting
- 0:52Speaker 1: his ass kicked by an Olympic wrestler. Yeah, which uh,
- 0:57Speaker 1: which is fitting because we have with us a gold
- 0:59Speaker 1: medal archer from the twenty twenty four Paris Paralympics. I'm
- 1:04Speaker 1: actually holding his gold medal. Matt Stutsman is here today
- 1:07Speaker 1: in the studio, and Chili's trying to find a point
- 1:10Speaker 1: of connection with him, and then trying to find a
- 1:15Speaker 1: point of connection to him. He's like, oh, you're an
- 1:17Speaker 1: Olympic gold medalist, are you well?
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah? Did he have arms? He did? Yeah, So tell
- 1:32Speaker 2: us what happened, Chili?
- 1:33Speaker 3: Oh, this fella named Lincoln Macaraby, Olympic gold medalist wrestler,
- 1:38Speaker 3: came to South Dakota and put on at wrestling clinic,
- 1:42Speaker 3: and like you know, we got he'd always pull up
- 1:45Speaker 3: someone to demonstrate a move or whatever, and he was
- 1:48Speaker 3: explaining to us that like a lot of the technique
- 1:51Speaker 3: and power comes from your legs. And so he actually
- 1:54Speaker 3: put his arms behind his back and he was he
- 1:57Speaker 3: did like a little leg sweep of my leg with
- 2:00Speaker 3: his right leg, and I did like a backflip.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So he literally was also like twelve arms tied behind
- 2:06Speaker 1: his back.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a chance for me to wrestle. I might
- 2:10Speaker 2: be able to wrestle. Let me meet this guy. But yeah,
- 2:16Speaker 2: it was just tough.
- 2:17Speaker 1: It's my first first lesson.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Wait, you were twelve. How old was this guy?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Oh, he's like thirty five forty somewhere in there.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's I mean that wrest.
- 2:26Speaker 4: You don't need to be an Olympic wrestler to beat
- 2:28Speaker 4: up a twelve year old, right.
- 2:31Speaker 3: No, but he sure was.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Uh, it's gold medals heavy.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a little jealous because I've never actually held
- 2:43Speaker 2: it yet, but I'll take you. I'll take your word
- 2:48Speaker 2: for it.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Once again.
- 2:53Speaker 2: I think it always like a pound.
- 2:55Speaker 1: And joined today by Matt stuts from the twenty twenty
- 2:58Speaker 1: four Stuntsman. I'm doing that right, right yep? Stutsman, twenty
- 3:01Speaker 1: twenty four Paris Paralympics Gold Medal archer and bowhunter. Uh
- 3:07Speaker 1: zero arms.
- 3:09Speaker 2: For those of you listening, I knew a lot of hands.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I talk with my hands, which is weird, dude.
- 3:18Speaker 1: When I was watching watching you shoot one, when when
- 3:24Speaker 1: you won the gold medal, you're shooting again, I don't know.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I don't want to be it. I don't want to
- 3:30Speaker 1: be you're you're How do I put this? Your opponent
- 3:35Speaker 1: had both his arms.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's actually uh, I just want to be
- 3:40Speaker 2: the best in the world. So I was just like
- 3:41Speaker 2: you take it, yeah, bring it on. I don't care.
- 3:45Speaker 2: And then if I lose, I have an excuse. He
- 3:47Speaker 2: had arms.
- 3:47Speaker 1: No, it was you know my favorite. Your your form,
- 3:54Speaker 1: Your your form is so polished to the point where
- 3:57Speaker 1: I don't know if you know this, to the point
- 3:58Speaker 1: where when you when you're at full draw, the corner
- 4:02Speaker 1: of your mouth does the same thing every time. The
- 4:04Speaker 1: other corner of your mouth. H like it's incredible. You
- 4:09Speaker 1: know what. My favorite part of your form is though
- 4:11Speaker 1: the flinch. No, my favorite part of your form is
- 4:15Speaker 1: that your when you shoot, your release winds up over
- 4:18Speaker 1: your shoulder.
- 4:19Speaker 2: It actually taps me on the back, says a good
- 4:21Speaker 2: job on. That s.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Your move. Your move that flops your the move that
- 4:29Speaker 1: flops your release back to the front is polished.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I've been practicing that one.
- 4:34Speaker 1: It's like a little flick of your shoulder and also
- 4:37Speaker 1: that release comes back around. That's my favorite part of
- 4:39Speaker 1: the shot. It's the between shot part of the shot
- 4:42Speaker 1: that's good.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I uh wish I could tell people there's there was
- 4:47Speaker 2: times during the shot process where the announcers would say
- 4:50Speaker 2: I was flinching.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I know, I got it.
- 4:52Speaker 2: What was he talking about, Well, like you would see
- 4:54Speaker 2: me jerk or something like that. But if you notice
- 4:56Speaker 2: I had so much control over my shot. You know,
- 4:58Speaker 2: it's that moment where your brain's like shooting now, and
- 5:00Speaker 2: then you just have a mental freak out and you
- 5:03Speaker 2: just shoot.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Well.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Usually usually people shoot when that happens and the arrow
- 5:07Speaker 2: goes wide or goes every I'm able to control it
- 5:10Speaker 2: and so when it's not right, but my body, my
- 5:12Speaker 2: body says, shoot, but I'm not ready to shoot. I
- 5:15Speaker 2: can I can flinch and control the shot and not
- 5:17Speaker 2: actually shoot the shot and then reset mentally to make
- 5:20Speaker 2: it work again without letting down.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I have a thing where Yeah, I'm real. I wasn't.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I don't want to hack on him. I wasn't impressed
- 5:30Speaker 1: with the announcing.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Uh the guy that was announcing his name was John Stubbs.
- 5:37Speaker 2: And probably because he's never beaten me in twelve years
- 5:41Speaker 2: of competition and he's not retired. I felt like I
- 5:45Speaker 2: got a little bit a little bit of stuff coming
- 5:48Speaker 2: because of that.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Yeah, uh, we're gonna we're gonna dig into all this
- 5:55Speaker 1: in your whole bio and and everything. But what when
- 5:59Speaker 1: they're calling no shots on the tens, they're calling them
- 6:02Speaker 1: as a what's French for ten?
- 6:05Speaker 2: I don't know, it might be dose Deutsch, It's decent.
- 6:11Speaker 1: That's right, ten ten. Oh. So we're gonna get all that.
- 6:19Speaker 1: We gotta do a couple things real quick. You can
- 6:22Speaker 1: chime in though, Krin and I are everybody a huge
- 6:25Speaker 1: apology policy. What's the word I'm saying? Apology? Krin and I, oh,
- 6:30Speaker 1: listener is a huge apology. But just to help it
- 6:33Speaker 1: make it better. I want you to know that we
- 6:35Speaker 1: lost out too.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Yeah, we both did.
- 6:37Speaker 1: We both gave our money away accidentally as well. On
- 6:43Speaker 1: going way back October eleventh, So going back a month ago,
- 6:48Speaker 1: we were we were pimping a Arizona Big Game super
- 6:52Speaker 1: raffle m okay to remind, to remind listeners, Arizona's game
- 7:00Speaker 1: had voted away to get had voted to move away
- 7:02Speaker 1: from what's called governor's tags, and they're hoping to do
- 7:07Speaker 1: raffle tags to allocate these permits in a more democratic
- 7:10Speaker 1: fashion for an inexpensive raffle ticket. And so we're talking
- 7:13Speaker 1: about the budget the financial man. It's gonna be a
- 7:23Speaker 1: rough mourning for me. I don't know what happened. I
- 7:26Speaker 1: thought I slept fine.
- 7:26Speaker 2: The revenues produced by auction auction.
- 7:31Speaker 1: So they used to auction the Governor's tags off in
- 7:34Speaker 1: Arizona and it raised the whole boatload of money. They're
- 7:39Speaker 1: moving away from that, and they're going to raffles, raffles
- 7:42Speaker 1: versus auctions, and it's projected that the money coming in
- 7:46Speaker 1: will shrink now because raffles aren't as profitable as auctions
- 7:49Speaker 1: have been. To help with this budget shortfall or financial shortfall.
- 7:55Speaker 1: We were promoting to people, Hey, go on and buy
- 7:59Speaker 1: Arizona the Big Game super Raffle tickets. I went and
- 8:04Speaker 1: spent a whopping one hundred dollars on Mule Deer super
- 8:08Speaker 1: Raffle tickets. Krienn went in for a whopping one fifty.
- 8:13Speaker 5: I'm just gonna make one correct and then stamp contest episode.
- 8:18Speaker 5: If anyone is searching the duck.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Stamp, no, no, no, no, no, no, that was not when we
- 8:23Speaker 1: did that.
- 8:23Speaker 5: It's in my notes.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I just checked it, Karen. I don't care what you
- 8:29Speaker 1: know would say. That was not when we had the
- 8:32Speaker 1: duck stamp painter in here.
- 8:35Speaker 5: Okay, anyway, sorry, it just wasn't it was.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I will bet you, I will bet you five dollars.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Is it hot here?
- 8:50Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 8:53Speaker 5: Six eleven the duck stamp champ. It is in the
- 8:56Speaker 5: show notes, the Arizona Raffle, So that's in there.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Wrong.
- 9:03Speaker 1: We didn't. We talked about when I It's just not
- 9:08Speaker 1: right either way, either way, I'm right, I'm cry whether
- 9:16Speaker 1: I'm right or wrong. The problem is for all you
- 9:18Speaker 1: people that went out and did this, this is almost
- 9:20Speaker 1: like how they allow you to do it when you
- 9:22Speaker 1: can't do it. I don't know, but you have to
- 9:24Speaker 1: be present in Arizona. Yeah, do it.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Of purchasing, because it's complicated with.
- 9:35Speaker 1: With well, it should have a thing that says, hey,
- 9:37Speaker 1: are you sure you're there? Because they sure, they like
- 9:40Speaker 1: that's fine, I can have my Hunter box, my kids
- 9:43Speaker 1: will my kids will still eat. But why would they
- 9:47Speaker 1: allow you to make such a mistake. You can't buy
- 9:50Speaker 1: not you can't just go buy licenses a.
- 9:53Speaker 5: Couple of things. I accept full responsibility for not reading instructions.
- 9:56Speaker 5: Thank you to the podcast listener who did and then
- 9:59Speaker 5: send in the correction. But it's it's very complicated for
- 10:03Speaker 5: them to prevent that when they're actually looking at when
- 10:07Speaker 5: they're drawing, they will be able to identify based on
- 10:10Speaker 5: IP address, where the person where the computer was at
- 10:15Speaker 5: purchase at the time of purchase. But but they have
- 10:18Speaker 5: graciously offered to return the money of any podcast listener
- 10:24Speaker 5: who bought their Raffle tickets on hearing our announcement. Yeah
- 10:30Speaker 5: oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Uh you know, I'm only out ninety five because I'm
- 10:35Speaker 1: going I just won five in a bet congratulations related
- 10:39Speaker 1: related to this.
- 10:43Speaker 5: I have to play that podcast back.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Crim's out one fifty five, I'm out ninety five. I'm
- 10:48Speaker 1: gonna I'm gonna let them just I'm putting it in
- 10:51Speaker 1: my mind that it was a donation, which I kind
- 10:53Speaker 1: of felt like it was when I put in for
- 10:55Speaker 1: the thing. Anyways, our chick id never win that kind
- 10:57Speaker 1: of stuff.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Do they cap the raffles?
- 11:00Speaker 1: No, that's a whole No.
- 11:01Speaker 2: They could be a million tickets and.
- 11:03Speaker 1: You're not gonna win. Everyone wins. Everyone's gonna win.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Well, they also have like other prizes and stuff too,
- 11:10Speaker 3: like you know, Shields card Saskis, And.
- 11:14Speaker 5: We do want to encourage everyone in Arizona or everyone
- 11:18Speaker 5: visiting in Arizona to continue to buy Raffle tickets. And
- 11:24Speaker 5: I think it's until Christmas Day.
- 11:27Speaker 2: I think so you're saying, I gotta fly to Arizona,
- 11:30Speaker 2: buy the ticket in Arizona, then I could fly home
- 11:32Speaker 2: and then and then I could use.
- 11:33Speaker 5: It if you're stop over the Phoenix Airport.
- 11:36Speaker 1: That's but in all seriousness, if you did that, in
- 11:41Speaker 1: all seriousness, apologies, and uh I you know, we take
- 11:47Speaker 1: a lot of the blame. But I also just just
- 11:49Speaker 1: throwing it out there. If you go to buy, like
- 11:51Speaker 1: if I was going to go right now and buy
- 11:53Speaker 1: a resident hunting license in Arizona. There's all manner of
- 11:57Speaker 1: things that would prevent me from doing that, right. I
- 11:59Speaker 1: feel like it should be like on a little alert
- 12:01Speaker 1: pop up. There should be a little alert saying like,
- 12:04Speaker 1: you know what, when you go on a gun manufacturer's
- 12:07Speaker 1: website and it's like, hey are you eighteen?
- 12:10Speaker 5: You can lie on that.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I know, but if it just said it should pop
- 12:14Speaker 1: up be like, hey, are you sure you're in Arizona?
- 12:17Speaker 2: Mm hmmm.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Right. But also if you are, if you are out
- 12:21Speaker 5: money because of us, because of me, feel free to
- 12:27Speaker 5: write meat Eater and she'll send you the money and
- 12:30Speaker 5: we'll get it.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Sort of, well, who's who's to say that someone just
- 12:34Speaker 3: reaches out to you that didn't listen to podcast and
- 12:36Speaker 3: you're like, well, I want my money back.
- 12:37Speaker 1: She's gonna tell them how to go apply for pain.
- 12:41Speaker 5: And sorry conservation first USA. I definitely don't want to
- 12:45Speaker 5: give them more work, but it's like I address search.
- 12:48Speaker 1: You might just think of it if you, if you,
- 12:50Speaker 1: if you're in a position to do it, you might
- 12:52Speaker 1: just think of it as a good donation to You
- 12:55Speaker 1: might just think of it as a good donation to
- 12:57Speaker 1: it's a wildlife conservation in Arizona. Done with that. Right
- 13:02Speaker 1: For the next thing, Matt, absolutely, you being from Iowa,
- 13:07Speaker 1: this might interest you. They just made it illegal in
- 13:10Speaker 1: Minnesota to eat a beaver if you've killed the beaver
- 13:16Speaker 1: under a depredation permit, and there's a lot of head
- 13:19Speaker 1: scratching going on about why is that true?
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:22Speaker 5: I sent this to Ya Vong and he was like, dude,
- 13:26Speaker 5: it is.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Now illegal to eat a nuisance beaver in Minnesota. And
- 13:29Speaker 1: see the Minnesota is Star Tribune. They're trying to be
- 13:32Speaker 1: cutesy with it, and they're using all these little puns
- 13:35Speaker 1: in the article like it's a gnawing question. They're trying
- 13:40Speaker 1: to be cute and they're acting like no one knows why.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I think I have it solved, Like I might have
- 13:46Speaker 1: solved it for you, Minnesota Star Tribune. I don't know,
- 13:53Speaker 1: but here's here's here's my guess. Oftentimes, like do you
- 13:57Speaker 1: remember we reported on when they made it that if
- 14:01Speaker 1: you our friends in Australia, a small percentage of our
- 14:09Speaker 1: people in Australia, I would call our friends. But our
- 14:11Speaker 1: friends in Australia had a thing where if you were
- 14:15Speaker 1: to kill a kangaroo under depredation, you couldn't market it. Yeah,
- 14:21Speaker 1: And part of what when you get these rules like this,
- 14:25Speaker 1: what they're trying to do is they're trying to clarify
- 14:27Speaker 1: what your actual reason is for killing it. Meaning you
- 14:38Speaker 1: draw a depredation permit for beaver's. They're sort of like, well,
- 14:41Speaker 1: is it really a depredation issue or something else at play?
- 14:44Speaker 1: Like let's say, all of a sudden, for magically, for
- 14:46Speaker 1: some weird reason, beavers were, all of a sudden, a
- 14:50Speaker 1: dead beaver land there's worth a thousand bucks. I could
- 14:55Speaker 1: picture it some like, you know, like someone they determine
- 15:00Speaker 1: that it's the beaver caster is like the world's greatest aphrodisiac,
- 15:04Speaker 1: or like here's baldness or something whatever, and all of
- 15:07Speaker 1: a sudden, the beaver's worth a thousand bucks. Laying their dead.
- 15:10Speaker 1: A guy says, man, I got an idea. I'm gonna
- 15:14Speaker 1: get a depredation permit, and I mean there's big, there's
- 15:19Speaker 1: a big they're cutting my trees down. I'm gonna get
- 15:21Speaker 1: a depredation permit, and I'm gonna be al. I'm gonna
- 15:24Speaker 1: kill beaver's year round and sell them all for a
- 15:27Speaker 1: thousand bucks. So oftentimes if you get a depredation permit,
- 15:31Speaker 1: you can't utilize the resource.
- 15:33Speaker 4: It's like a DLP killing in Alaska, yep.
- 15:36Speaker 1: If you if a bear breaks into your house and
- 15:38Speaker 1: you kill the bear, you don't keep the bear. For instance,
- 15:42Speaker 1: if I we have a bear lurking around our neighborhood
- 15:45Speaker 1: right now'm getting everybody's trash. If I came out and
- 15:48Speaker 1: the bear was standing in my garage, I can kill
- 15:51Speaker 1: the bear. I don't then also get to sell the
- 15:54Speaker 1: hide and eat the meat. They come and take the
- 15:56Speaker 1: bear because it's sort of like did you kill it
- 15:58Speaker 1: because you wanted it or did you kill it because
- 16:01Speaker 1: it was causing a problem. So they're making a big
- 16:07Speaker 1: deal about this. It's a big mystery. It's probably a
- 16:09Speaker 1: part of de incentivizing claims of depredation that aren't depredation
- 16:17Speaker 1: because you're trying to get it.
- 16:21Speaker 4: I assume it applies to the the.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Fur as well. No, well, why I don't know that?
- 16:26Speaker 1: I don't. I don't know if you can't market.
- 16:28Speaker 5: It, you know, because how many people are really like
- 16:31Speaker 5: love eating bee?
- 16:32Speaker 1: I don't know, but I'm saying I think that that's
- 16:33Speaker 1: I don't know what the rule is on selling it.
- 16:35Speaker 1: But if you trap it during season, you can eat it.
- 16:37Speaker 1: You just can't eat it under depredation.
- 16:40Speaker 5: Mm hmm.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Also, I have a feeling I don't give legal advice,
- 16:45Speaker 1: you know, all that kind of stuff. I'm not giving
- 16:47Speaker 1: legal advice.
- 16:47Speaker 2: How to have, just financial advice.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I have a feeling that if you're in Minnesota and
- 16:54Speaker 1: you've been eating a lot of the beavers you catch
- 16:56Speaker 1: on your depredation permit. I just have a feeling that
- 17:01Speaker 1: if you were to continue to cut a hammy off
- 17:04Speaker 1: those one of those beavers now and then and keep
- 17:06Speaker 1: eating it, I just don't feel that you're gonna wind
- 17:08Speaker 1: up in a bunch of trouble. Yep.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Have you ever eaten beaver?
- 17:13Speaker 1: Yes, it's a good piles of it. One time me
- 17:16Speaker 1: and my buddy staff made fifty four pounds of beaver sausage.
- 17:19Speaker 2: What that's a lot?
- 17:22Speaker 1: Yeah? You know what? You know what I mixed in
- 17:24Speaker 1: there with it. It's a little bit of red fox.
- 17:32Speaker 1: So I know this isn't a hint of red fox.
- 17:34Speaker 2: I know this isn't Minnesota, but and Iowa. My brother
- 17:38Speaker 2: makes a living getting animals out of people's houses. Sure,
- 17:43Speaker 2: good for him, So like trapping beavers out of ponds
- 17:46Speaker 2: and and all that stuff. But I'm gonna have to.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Ask he's in the ad C business, Yeah, not eat.
- 17:51Speaker 2: C eight eighty C. I'm gonna have to ask him
- 17:54Speaker 2: why he doesn't try to eat any of that stuff.
- 17:55Speaker 2: But probably because they can't, I'm guessing.
- 17:57Speaker 1: So taking gets a little sick of looking.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Yeah, there's we've.
- 18:02Speaker 5: Got beaver recipes in our books. Yeah, he's like roast
- 18:06Speaker 5: the whole tail.
- 18:07Speaker 2: And yeah, yep, I'm gonna have to try beaver soon.
- 18:11Speaker 1: So yeah, if you're trapping under a depredation permit and like,
- 18:15Speaker 1: and you catch one and you kind of look up
- 18:18Speaker 1: and down the road and there's no one looking and
- 18:20Speaker 1: you're down in the bushes and you decide to get
- 18:23Speaker 1: a hammy or a little bit of tail, I don't know.
- 18:26Speaker 1: So what if you run, they're gonna spring out and
- 18:28Speaker 1: bust you.
- 18:29Speaker 2: What if you hit it with the vehicle because I
- 18:31Speaker 2: ran over a beaver like last year, And.
- 18:33Speaker 1: You're okay as long as your state allows you to
- 18:35Speaker 1: keep rolling.
- 18:37Speaker 2: If I wonder, like, if you uh, they're just reminded
- 18:44Speaker 2: me of a story last last winter. A lady in
- 18:50Speaker 2: her had hit a deer. A friend of ours had
- 18:52Speaker 2: hit a deer with the car on the interstate and
- 18:54Speaker 2: we called the d n R and got a tag
- 18:56Speaker 2: so I could keep the meat. So I'm out there,
- 18:59Speaker 2: it's probably ten ten o'clock in the evening and it's
- 19:02Speaker 2: dark and this I'm skinning it out.
- 19:05Speaker 1: You are you You can skim with your feet?
- 19:06Speaker 2: Oh yeah, absolutely, hold the knife. Yeah I know that.
- 19:11Speaker 2: So I'm in the middle of the road there or
- 19:13Speaker 2: in the ditch there, pull the guts out. It's with
- 19:16Speaker 2: my feet, you know. You know those bags that you
- 19:20Speaker 2: use that go all the way up to your armpit,
- 19:23Speaker 2: Like I just put them on my shoes waiters. Yeah,
- 19:27Speaker 2: but they don't make them. They don't make anything for
- 19:29Speaker 2: feet like that. So I have to make it work.
- 19:31Speaker 2: But I can make it work. So I'm I'm gutting
- 19:35Speaker 2: out the deer in the middle of the night, basically,
- 19:38Speaker 2: and a car pulls up, and it was a car
- 19:41Speaker 2: full of ladies, and she goes, are.
- 19:43Speaker 1: You full lad How many? Where are they for?
- 19:48Speaker 2: Poor old ladies? And they go, are.
- 19:55Speaker 1: They is anybody here against their will in this car?
- 20:00Speaker 2: I think the funny part about it was that when
- 20:02Speaker 2: they pull up and they asked if I was okay,
- 20:04Speaker 2: And I stand up and I have blood from from
- 20:08Speaker 2: my knees down, and then my my buddy stands up
- 20:13Speaker 2: holding a knife. Of course, they can't see the deer
- 20:15Speaker 2: in the ditch, and all they hear is go, go go.
- 20:23Speaker 2: It took about ten minutes and the cop showed up.
- 20:25Speaker 2: So like this guy without arms fright, thought I was
- 20:30Speaker 2: getting all cut up and stuff. But anyway, that was
- 20:33Speaker 2: what that was what I was thinking, what I was
- 20:37Speaker 2: laughing about. Anyway, not to get off the track there
- 20:44Speaker 2: because a deer you can do that, right, And.
- 20:47Speaker 1: It stayed by state. Yeah, like for a long time
- 20:49Speaker 1: you couldn't hear now you can. In fact, there was
- 20:52Speaker 1: a whole like a whole series of states that that
- 20:57Speaker 1: that overturned prohibitions keeping. Yeah, I got trendy for a
- 21:03Speaker 1: bit good. That's a good kind of trend. That's a
- 21:05Speaker 1: good cond trend. Black Friday sales, So when's this kicking?
- 21:12Speaker 1: Oh now, from now as you're sitting here listening to
- 21:15Speaker 1: this through Monday, December second stock up on products at

- 21:46Speaker 1: uh fucked up old shitters calendar is out.
- 21:52Speaker 5: Get that too.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Yeah, all year long, every month you can look at
- 21:56Speaker 1: a fucked up shitter on a calendar.
- 21:59Speaker 4: Sounds like a great gift, I mean great stocking stuff.
- 22:02Speaker 4: You don't have to look at the fund up shitters.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Your your family, your friends, your coworkers, anyone you think
- 22:07Speaker 4: might enjoy it.
- 22:08Speaker 1: You know what came to me in a in a
- 22:11Speaker 1: I like wake up in the middle of the night
- 22:13Speaker 1: off and and then I think for a long time
- 22:15Speaker 1: before I fall back a sleep. Uh their day. I
- 22:18Speaker 1: was thinking of of an ad for those ship that
- 22:21Speaker 1: fucked up old shiitter calendar that involves Santa Claus need
- 22:29Speaker 1: and to let's do it needing to take a deuce
- 22:33Speaker 1: like in the middle of his frantic his the one
- 22:37Speaker 1: night a year when he really works.
- 22:41Speaker 4: We can make that happen. We've got the most talented
- 22:44Speaker 4: production team out there.
- 22:45Speaker 1: But do we have Santa suit I'm sure we can
- 22:49Speaker 1: it's in the budget.
- 22:52Speaker 6: That's budget look under s Brent Reeve can play Santa,
- 22:59Speaker 6: great Santa, because Santa is definitely like a Yankee.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely, Santa's a Yankee. Stick he's from the North Pole. Dude.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Oh yeah, right there.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, unless you went so far south that
- 23:16Speaker 1: you came back off the other side and back around
- 23:18Speaker 1: on top. I mean that's more of the geology, not
- 23:22Speaker 1: a geology. That's like a geography question.
- 23:25Speaker 7: Randall, you'd make a great Santa.
- 23:26Speaker 1: That's it. Before anyone loves state that has ice fishing.
- 23:29Speaker 1: You can't be from the south if people ice fish
- 23:31Speaker 1: in your state. That's how you know if you're in
- 23:33Speaker 1: the South or not. And people ice fish up that
- 23:36Speaker 1: way toward the pole. Well towards the pole is that everything.
- 23:45Speaker 5: Kids Podcast out now today.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Kids Podcast is out now. So we did meetiator kids.
- 23:53Speaker 1: We kind of made it provisional. We told everybody like,
- 23:56Speaker 1: we're doing this, but we don't know if we're going
- 23:57Speaker 1: to keep doing it. We don't know how much people
- 23:59Speaker 1: like it and how much people will listen. Well, they
- 24:02Speaker 1: liked it and they listened. So now we're doing another
- 24:04Speaker 1: run of the Kids podcast, and again it's for your kids,
- 24:09Speaker 1: and the kids podcast works is like three acts. There's
- 24:11Speaker 1: an act up top. It's like a biology and history
- 24:14Speaker 1: biology slash history slash interesting stuff lesson for kids, which
- 24:17Speaker 1: I do. Then we have a there's this thing called
- 24:20Speaker 1: Guess that Critter, which is about animal vocalizations, and we
- 24:23Speaker 1: play animal vocalizations and start to build a bio and
- 24:28Speaker 1: leading your kid to try to guess what animals make
- 24:30Speaker 1: in it. And we pick animals that have crazy varied vocalizations,
- 24:35Speaker 1: like a crow prizing gonna make the cut? Right, A
- 24:39Speaker 1: sea lion would make.
- 24:40Speaker 5: The cut I did last time, but we won't give
- 24:42Speaker 5: away season twesday.
- 24:44Speaker 1: No, because sea lions make crazy noises. It sounds like, uh.
- 24:52Speaker 2: That was a fan favorite quip.
- 24:54Speaker 1: The And then the third act is when we bring actual,
- 24:58Speaker 1: real live kids. This might be a I think we
- 25:02Speaker 1: could figure out so we don't have to deal with
- 25:03Speaker 1: any kids anymore. Oh wow, interesting. We bring actual definitely
- 25:07Speaker 1: in the spirit of the project. We bring in actual,
- 25:13Speaker 1: real live kids to play trivia, but the way we
- 25:16Speaker 1: do it with the kids in the spirit in the
- 25:17Speaker 1: American spirit of destroying America's competitive sense, you know, like
- 25:24Speaker 1: making it that that America no longer has its competitive edge.
- 25:27Speaker 1: We've taken away where the the kids don't compete against
- 25:30Speaker 1: one another. They work together. They're all winter elective, they're
- 25:35Speaker 1: all winners, and they work together to build up a
- 25:38Speaker 1: little booty of money to go to UH to conservation,
- 25:46Speaker 1: because it doesn't work to have fourteen year olds whipping
- 25:49Speaker 1: on seven year olds. The seven year old gets you said,
- 25:55Speaker 1: you know we should do it would be great, is
- 25:57Speaker 1: uh we should bring in to play against the kids.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, this is for me.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Okay, and I'll have you know, last trivia I did
- 26:09Speaker 3: pretty good.
- 26:10Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, Chili's h.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Up and comer.
- 26:14Speaker 1: That would be a huge show. It'd be like where
- 26:15Speaker 1: Chili comes in and gets whooped by kids at true.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Steve, you're not the first person.
- 26:23Speaker 1: And how old are you? So like, okay, Mabel you're twelve?
- 26:27Speaker 1: How old are you? Chili thirty? This is stupid. I
- 26:34Speaker 1: don't like to never playing trivia again. That's all joke,
- 26:38Speaker 1: you know, Chilia, chiliad win. You know, it's not too comfident.
- 26:47Speaker 1: He'd have as much of a chance as anybody who
- 26:49Speaker 1: winning that.
- 26:53Speaker 7: My six year olds pumped about more episodes, though. Every
- 26:56Speaker 7: time we're in the car going somewhere more than ten minutes,
- 26:58Speaker 7: he's asking, are there.
- 26:59Speaker 1: More eat her Kids trivia episodes? Great?
- 27:02Speaker 2: Good, Matt, you ready you should do one about what
- 27:05Speaker 2: does the fox say? M I think Steve's heard that song.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I know that song. It's a classic. Yeah,
- 27:13Speaker 1: I don't think we're gonna do that.
- 27:16Speaker 2: My kids wanted a dog, said, memorize the words of
- 27:18Speaker 2: that song. I don't have a dog yet. It is
- 27:21Speaker 2: a popular song. And I still don't know what a
- 27:23Speaker 2: fox says. He says it's like ming ming ming or
- 27:27Speaker 2: something like that.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Matt stutsman. You know, how comfortable are you talking about
- 27:36Speaker 1: super you were adopted? I'll talk about that story man. Yeah,
- 27:41Speaker 1: so like your parents got overwhelmed.
- 27:45Speaker 2: You know, it's funny because I don't remember any of
- 27:47Speaker 2: this because I was still little. But when I was born,
- 27:53Speaker 2: they there was a surprise that I had no arms,
- 27:56Speaker 2: like my mom never did ultrasounds or anything like that.
- 27:59Speaker 2: So they're like, oh, my goodness, here's a kid without
- 28:02Speaker 2: any arms. What do we do? And the doctor told
- 28:04Speaker 2: them that it was going to cost millions of dollars
- 28:07Speaker 2: to raise me and that I would never be able
- 28:10Speaker 2: to do anything on my own ever, so My parents
- 28:13Speaker 2: were just.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Like, have you ever found that daughter had a chat?
- 28:18Speaker 2: You know, I was thinking, like if I ever could punch,
- 28:19Speaker 2: but I'd have to get real close. No, I've never
- 28:24Speaker 2: met the doctor. But because of that guidance, it actually
- 28:28Speaker 2: was huge for my life because where I ended up
- 28:33Speaker 2: and the family who adopted me like taught me how
- 28:37Speaker 2: to adapt to the world and taught me to think
- 28:39Speaker 2: like I can do anything and then I don't need
- 28:41Speaker 2: no one's help to do it. And so I'm glad
- 28:43Speaker 2: I was adopted. You know, I'm glad that I was
- 28:45Speaker 2: put in that situation where my family had eight brothers
- 28:49Speaker 2: and sisters and we lived on a farm and we
- 28:51Speaker 2: lived off the land, and there was times where I
- 28:53Speaker 2: was just taught like, you know, there was a time
- 28:55Speaker 2: I was hungry, so I went it was with the
- 29:00Speaker 2: twenty two, and I shot a squirrel. Then I scanned
- 29:02Speaker 2: it and I made a little fire and I started
- 29:04Speaker 2: cooking it, and I was none. I was sitting on
- 29:06Speaker 2: my shoulder and I was just eating it when my
- 29:07Speaker 2: brother walked up and apparently I hadn't cooked it long enough.
- 29:11Speaker 2: But you know, that's the type of stuff. My parents
- 29:13Speaker 2: were like, hey, you just got to figure it out.
- 29:15Speaker 2: You got to go do it. And so I'm happy
- 29:19Speaker 2: that I was put up for adoption.
- 29:20Speaker 1: And are you are you in touch now with your
- 29:22Speaker 1: biological parents?
- 29:24Speaker 2: Ironically, they came got in touch with me after all.
- 29:28Speaker 2: This happened with the uh no, yeah, no, legit in
- 29:33Speaker 2: twenty twelve when I won my silver my first game's ever,
- 29:36Speaker 2: I won a silver medal, they just all came out
- 29:39Speaker 2: of the woodwork. Hey, I'm your cousin from your mom's side,
- 29:42Speaker 2: do whatever. And then hey, I was you know, I
- 29:44Speaker 2: gave birth to you, and hey, I'm the dad, I'm
- 29:47Speaker 2: your dad. I'm like, what is happening?
- 29:49Speaker 1: Are you serious?
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 29:51Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 29:51Speaker 2: But to me, I like, it didn't bother me any
- 29:54Speaker 2: because I knew who my parents are and you know
- 29:57Speaker 2: these are you know, no hard feelings to them. What's so?
- 30:00Speaker 2: You know they had me and that was pretty much
- 30:02Speaker 2: the end of it how I look at it. Yeah,
- 30:06Speaker 2: cow man, had I've had a good life. You know,
- 30:10Speaker 2: I know that I do a lot of motivational speaking
- 30:13Speaker 2: and they want you to come in and talk about
- 30:15Speaker 2: the ups and downs of your life. But I've had
- 30:17Speaker 2: I've had I've had ups and downs, but like I've
- 30:20Speaker 2: had a good life, you know, Like, I don't have
- 30:23Speaker 2: any modifications in my house. I can do everything everybody
- 30:26Speaker 2: else can do. I hunt fish, drive cars like I.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I was watching that that profile piece they did
- 30:34Speaker 1: that you don't have. You don't have a modified car
- 30:37Speaker 1: and your parents. Your parents made a decision kind of
- 30:42Speaker 1: early on that they were going to modify anything in
- 30:44Speaker 1: the house.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Nothing. They were actually offered by the insurance company like
- 30:49Speaker 2: five hundred bucks a month, and back in nineteen eighty two,
- 30:51Speaker 2: that was a lot of money. But they had to
- 30:53Speaker 2: spend it on me, and they had to spend it
- 30:55Speaker 2: to modify the house for me, and they're like nope, nope,
- 30:58Speaker 2: and they turned it all down. They're like, we're going
- 31:00Speaker 2: to teach this kid how to do stuff without anything modified,
- 31:03Speaker 2: because someday he's going to be out in the world
- 31:05Speaker 2: on a meat eater podcast and he's not gonna need
- 31:08Speaker 2: someone to be beside him to help him get there.
- 31:10Speaker 2: He can do it on his own. Like they knew
- 31:13Speaker 2: that stuff before I did.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Wow, what was the first time you ever laid eyes
- 31:17Speaker 1: on a piece of archery equipment?
- 31:21Speaker 2: My brother had a bow when I was younger, and
- 31:23Speaker 2: he couldn't shoot it. With a crap.
- 31:29Speaker 1: What were his intentions with the bo I don't even know.
- 31:31Speaker 2: He just lost arrows. But I remember, I tell the
- 31:35Speaker 2: story where I first got into archery in twenty ten.
- 31:39Speaker 2: But the story that nobody knows.
- 31:41Speaker 1: You're sorry, but you're how old are you in twenty ten?
- 31:44Speaker 2: Oh shoot, I'm forty two now, so I would have
- 31:47Speaker 2: been twenty eight maybe. But the little story that nobody
- 31:53Speaker 2: knows is that I tried archery when I was probably
- 31:56Speaker 2: thirteen or fourteen, and the technology of the and stuff
- 32:00Speaker 2: back then wasn't that great. So every time I would
- 32:03Speaker 2: try to draw the bow back there would always fall
- 32:04Speaker 2: off because rest, yeah, or like one of those like
- 32:07Speaker 2: uh steel prongs with the little you know, where the
- 32:10Speaker 2: the odd feather would go between it, you know, like
- 32:12Speaker 2: it just was what rest are you talking? I don't,
- 32:15Speaker 2: I don't even know. I just remember it's like a
- 32:17Speaker 2: yeah steal, oh yeah, yeah, I remember. Yeah. I could never
- 32:24Speaker 2: really make it work. So back then when I tried it,
- 32:27Speaker 2: it was kind of like a short lived thing.
- 32:30Speaker 1: And that was one of the obstacles keeping the arrow
- 32:32Speaker 1: on though.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I missed a huge buck because of it. So
- 32:35Speaker 2: I was like, ah, you know, like if I had
- 32:37Speaker 2: a gun, it could It's sure, you know, it'd been better.
- 32:40Speaker 2: But for me then it was in twenty ten where
- 32:43Speaker 2: for me archer really kicked off. But I think a
- 32:45Speaker 2: lot of it the technology then, you know, in twenty
- 32:48Speaker 2: ten when I said, hey, I'm gonna shoot a bow,
- 32:51Speaker 2: they had a whisker biscuit, right, So they put a
- 32:53Speaker 2: whisker biscuit on the boat and I could do what
- 32:56Speaker 2: I could throw the ball on the ground and it
- 32:57Speaker 2: wouldn't fall out of that thing, you know. Uh. And
- 33:01Speaker 2: so that's when you know I really excelled with the
- 33:03Speaker 2: archery and fell in love with archery as we know it.
- 33:07Speaker 4: For people who haven't watched you shoot, can you just
- 33:11Speaker 4: put that up? Can you deride what your your process is?
- 33:15Speaker 1: Like, I could do you one better? So, well, there's
- 33:18Speaker 1: gonna be listeners what not. But he can walk? Oh
- 33:21Speaker 1: I see, yeah, I think you should ask because because
- 33:23Speaker 1: people that are just listening will help. But if I
- 33:27Speaker 1: don't feel was intending to pull this up anyway.
- 33:28Speaker 4: So and I'm curious too, like how you got there?
- 33:32Speaker 4: If there were other other.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Oh check this this is a good This is a
- 33:38Speaker 2: good video.
- 33:39Speaker 1: This is a good video, but not the one. These
- 33:41Speaker 1: are the ones.
- 33:41Speaker 2: I only have the hunting ones prepared.
- 33:43Speaker 5: I only only sent him hunting ones because they're in
- 33:46Speaker 5: the dark.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Ass pot.
- 33:47Speaker 5: We can't show the broadcast broadcast video, like we can't
- 33:52Speaker 5: show like Paralympic, Like, we can't show that to our audience.
- 33:57Speaker 2: All right, so you just oh, it gets better, it
- 34:01Speaker 2: gets better, wait for it, wait for it. No, oh
- 34:04Speaker 2: it comes back. Oh what are you doing, hey, buddy?
- 34:08Speaker 2: I think I would like to eat you too. Bye bye.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Wow n doubled up.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Yeah, he didn't go very far either, but so that
- 34:23Speaker 2: didn't show really how I shoot.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Ironically, in twenty ten, I googled how to teach an
- 34:29Speaker 2: armlest guy how to shoot a bow because there was nothing.
- 34:35Speaker 2: I couldn't find nothing, so everything self taught.
- 34:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you quick thing though. When I was
- 34:42Speaker 1: in archery league as a kid, we had a guy
- 34:44Speaker 1: that was very, very good, a one arm shooter.
- 34:49Speaker 2: And then it's like the and he held it in
- 34:52Speaker 2: his mouth.
- 34:52Speaker 1: He had a mouthpiece.
- 34:54Speaker 2: What was his name?
- 34:55Speaker 1: You know? I never I could find out. I could
- 34:57Speaker 1: ask around.
- 34:58Speaker 2: He had a he had a from aire Zona.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Nope, Michigan, Michigan. Yeah, I can't remember how his release worked.
- 35:04Speaker 1: But it was like he'd bite down and it was
- 35:07Speaker 1: like a string release where his.
- 35:09Speaker 4: Teeth like a mouth tab yep thing.
- 35:12Speaker 1: And he would just relax his jaw, would relax his
- 35:16Speaker 1: jaw and used to he used to dominate in the league.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I have a buddy. His name is Eric Bennett.
- 35:21Speaker 2: He's been to five games actually, and for the first
- 35:25Speaker 2: three or four he shot with a mouth tab. He's
- 35:27Speaker 2: pretty good at it, and he only he only has
- 35:29Speaker 2: one arm.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Two.
- 35:30Speaker 2: But when I this is before I met all those guys, right,
- 35:33Speaker 2: so I didn't know what I was doing, and I know,
- 35:35Speaker 2: I just the reality is the reason why I needed
- 35:38Speaker 2: to get a bow in twenty ten is because I
- 35:41Speaker 2: couldn't get a job. I would like people would have
- 35:45Speaker 2: me come in like I would apply, like, yeah, you're
- 35:47Speaker 2: perfect on paper, and then I would come in and
- 35:49Speaker 2: then they would look at me and they'd be like,
- 35:52Speaker 2: do you have prosthetics? Like I would hire you if
- 35:54Speaker 2: he had prosthetics. I'm like, well, last time I had prosthetics.
- 35:57Speaker 2: I wore him to show and tell that's cool because
- 36:01Speaker 2: I wanted to be the only kid who could take
- 36:02Speaker 2: off his arms, right. Yeah, But I was just remember
- 36:05Speaker 2: thinking like I was getting judged what I look like,
- 36:08Speaker 2: not what I was capable of. And I didn't have
- 36:11Speaker 2: any food, and I was sitting at home trying to
- 36:14Speaker 2: figure out what I was going to do, and bam,
- 36:17Speaker 2: a guy on TV was in the woods hunting. I
- 36:20Speaker 2: saw on TV. I might have been your show, even
- 36:23Speaker 2: I don't know. Did you have a hunting show back
- 36:25Speaker 2: in twenty ten?
- 36:26Speaker 1: Yeah, but we didn't have a we didn't have it
- 36:28Speaker 1: was on we didn't have a network, or we didn't
- 36:31Speaker 1: have an armless archer on it.
- 36:32Speaker 2: No, it was a regular gentleman out hunting with a bow.
- 36:36Speaker 2: And I saw that and I was like, that's how
- 36:40Speaker 2: I'm going to provide for a family. So I googled
- 36:42Speaker 2: how to teach a guy with that arms how to
- 36:44Speaker 2: shoot a bow, and nothing came up. But I went
- 36:46Speaker 2: and came up. Nothing came up, And I went to
- 36:49Speaker 2: my local archery store and I said, I want to
- 36:50Speaker 2: buy that boat right there, and he said, how are
- 36:52Speaker 2: you going to shoot it? And I said, I don't know.
- 36:55Speaker 1: You bought a bowl off the shelf, off the shelf,
- 36:58Speaker 1: But what did they set for the drawling?
- 37:00Speaker 2: They had no idea what they were doing, and I
- 37:02Speaker 2: didn't know what I was doing.
- 37:03Speaker 5: I did.
- 37:03Speaker 2: I literally said, just give this to me, and then
- 37:05Speaker 2: I just went home like I didn't like let them
- 37:08Speaker 2: like figure it out with me because I had no idea.
- 37:11Speaker 2: So I go home and there were there wasn't even
- 37:14Speaker 2: a D loop on it, so I was just grabbing
- 37:16Speaker 2: the string of my teeth and then my buddy had
- 37:19Speaker 2: a release aid. He's like, you need to wear one
- 37:22Speaker 2: of these. I'm like those, it's a wrist strap. What
- 37:24Speaker 2: do you want me to do with that? But I
- 37:27Speaker 2: actually was able to slide it on my shoulder and
- 37:30Speaker 2: activate it with my chin, and oh the rest was history.
- 37:34Speaker 2: I went out. I within within a within two weeks
- 37:38Speaker 2: of learning how to shoot, I was went in the
- 37:40Speaker 2: woods and shot at ear.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Wow.
- 37:42Speaker 5: Yeah, that's the video we have.
- 37:45Speaker 2: That's no, this is a lot further along in my career.
- 37:48Speaker 1: But you have a personal video showing in daylight how
- 37:53Speaker 1: you shoot?
- 37:55Speaker 2: Uh you mean like how I besides the video you
- 37:59Speaker 2: just seen, I.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Feel if we put that up someone would actually we
- 38:02Speaker 1: would actually get like really get in trouble.
- 38:05Speaker 6: No, those Olympic broadcast stuff is really really Yeah, it's.
- 38:09Speaker 2: Tough, Okay, So I wish I wish you could go
- 38:12Speaker 2: on to my social media because I have a ton
- 38:13Speaker 2: of stuff that I own the rights too. We can,
- 38:16Speaker 2: So why why do you pull up on my videos?
- 38:18Speaker 1: Keep telling ye keep telling the story. They'll work on it.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Okay, So, oh what the hell you were?
- 38:24Speaker 1: What that were you asking about? Randall?
- 38:26Speaker 2: How I shot?
- 38:26Speaker 4: I know we got Yeah, I mean so, but you're
- 38:30Speaker 4: was it just instinctual? I mean you use your feet
- 38:33Speaker 4: for everything, like you were just like, of course, I'll
- 38:37Speaker 4: pick this up between my toes and yeah.
- 38:40Speaker 2: So the guy, the guy that I saw on TV
- 38:42Speaker 2: held the ball with his right arm, so I would
- 38:44Speaker 2: I grab the bell with my right foot. And then
- 38:47Speaker 2: once I figured out the release aid, I learned that
- 38:50Speaker 2: it needed to be on my right shoulder for string alignment.
- 38:54Speaker 2: I don't know why I figured that out, but it
- 38:56Speaker 2: needed to be on the right side. Plus I was
- 38:57Speaker 2: right eye dominant, so that kind of made sense. And
- 39:00Speaker 2: then that's pretty much it, Like it didn't really, you know,
- 39:04Speaker 2: just for people listening or whatever. I hold the boat
- 39:07Speaker 2: with my right foot, and so as I'm sitting there
- 39:11Speaker 2: with the boat unloaded, I actually have the bow on
- 39:13Speaker 2: the ground. I will pick the air up with my
- 39:16Speaker 2: right foot load it into the bow. Then I pick
- 39:18Speaker 2: up the bow with my right foot. At that point, I, gentlemen,
- 39:22Speaker 2: will cross my legs, if that makes any sense. Then
- 39:25Speaker 2: I lean down to the string and I attach my
- 39:28Speaker 2: release aid to the d loop. I then sit up
- 39:32Speaker 2: and it kind of looked like an accordion at this
- 39:34Speaker 2: point with my leg and like right in front of
- 39:36Speaker 2: my chest. And then I push my foot away from
- 39:39Speaker 2: my chest, which draws the bow back. Then I get
- 39:42Speaker 2: into my release and anchor position while I'm aiming, and
- 39:45Speaker 2: then I apply back pressure to the release. Yeah, and
- 39:50Speaker 2: then that activates the shot.
- 39:52Speaker 7: And your releases around your torso your.
- 39:54Speaker 2: Neck, the releases around my chest. So I've got some
- 39:58Speaker 2: Instagram stuff pulled up here. I don't have a lot
- 40:01Speaker 2: on Instagram. Okay, right there, now go down show down
- 40:05Speaker 2: right there here. That the sushi shot the target? Yeah, yeah,
- 40:09Speaker 2: I do that one cool. What kind of role is that?
- 40:12Speaker 2: The sushi roll? This is a hundred, one hundred and
- 40:15Speaker 2: one yard sushi shot, now, yeah, one hundred and one
- 40:19Speaker 2: yard sushi shot. Matt?
- 40:21Speaker 5: Is that your account? Because I also see armless archer.
- 40:24Speaker 2: It's one of my Yeah, apparently I have several, but
- 40:28Speaker 2: that is definitely. My video way down there. I think
- 40:35Speaker 2: this was like I shot this right before Tokyo right there.
- 40:38Speaker 2: Can you pause that video?
- 40:43Speaker 1: Hm?
- 40:43Speaker 2: So if you look like I'm holding the both my
- 40:45Speaker 2: right foot and then I have a release aid around
- 40:48Speaker 2: my chest over my right.
- 40:49Speaker 1: So that's a back tension release.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that's one that I designed. It's called the Fingerless.
- 40:57Speaker 2: I'm not going to make millions of dollars off of
- 40:59Speaker 2: it because I think there's like eight arms start one day,
- 41:02Speaker 2: you'd be one in the world now, but uh yeah,
- 41:06Speaker 2: so that's how and then I activated with the back pressure.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Now when you one thing I couldn't figure out when
- 41:11Speaker 1: you touch off, what are how are you not dropping
- 41:15Speaker 1: the bow? Do you got that good of a grip
- 41:16Speaker 1: on it with your toes?
- 41:17Speaker 2: Yeah? Sure, yeah, I got some pretty So a lot
- 41:21Speaker 2: of it has to do with the angle of how
- 41:22Speaker 2: I'm shooting it too. I figured out, like I'm leaning back,
- 41:26Speaker 2: so the weight of the bow is actually kind of
- 41:28Speaker 2: more over my torso.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Wow, damn.
- 41:32Speaker 2: There's even a little breeze too.
- 41:33Speaker 1: He hit a sushi roll.
- 41:34Speaker 3: Yeah, so I've noticed that, like you know, like as
- 41:40Speaker 3: we all shoot a bow, like we hold it with
- 41:41Speaker 3: our left hand, release, so like it's.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Kind of opposite.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's it's the same side, like it's the
- 41:47Speaker 3: right leg and then the release is on your right shoulder.
- 41:51Speaker 3: And that was just like you just naturally that's how
- 41:53Speaker 3: you did it.
- 41:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that just kind of something that was just natural
- 41:55Speaker 2: for me because I was trying to figure out, uh,
- 41:58Speaker 2: when I would switch to the left side and then
- 42:00Speaker 2: try to like the string alignment was bad, right, So
- 42:04Speaker 2: for me, Here's here's something that's interesting. If you watch
- 42:08Speaker 2: when I'm shooting, everything is like like I'm facing my
- 42:11Speaker 2: bow right like most people shoot boths kind of there
- 42:15Speaker 2: they stand at an angle sideways in the boat left
- 42:18Speaker 2: or right. When I shoot, the boat goes straight out
- 42:20Speaker 2: in front of me, which actually helps in the woods
- 42:22Speaker 2: because when I'm hunting, I can draw right out a
- 42:25Speaker 2: deer and they don't run off for nothing. And I
- 42:29Speaker 2: think it's because when I'm drawing, I'm pushing the boat
- 42:31Speaker 2: straight at them and the only movement you have is
- 42:34Speaker 2: my leg going forward, which is in line with the bow.
- 42:36Speaker 1: How many uh, how many pounds because you're using your leg,
- 42:40Speaker 1: how many pounds could you pull with your leg you're
- 42:45Speaker 1: pushing up pulling how many pounds. Can you push the It's.
- 42:47Speaker 4: Kind of like a leg press motion.
- 42:50Speaker 2: It is like a leg press. To be honest, I
- 42:52Speaker 2: had Hoy build me a custom bow not too long ago,
- 42:55Speaker 2: and it was ninety It was with the turbocams. Is
- 42:58Speaker 2: like ninety three pounds.
- 42:59Speaker 1: That's what you're pushing.
- 43:00Speaker 2: I don't do that anymore because I realized I was
- 43:04Speaker 2: down in Arkansas, Bentonville, Arkansas, and we were doing where
- 43:09Speaker 2: there was a bunch of deer in town that they
- 43:12Speaker 2: needed to get out, get rid of. So they brought
- 43:14Speaker 2: me down to kind of thin out the herd for them.
- 43:17Speaker 2: So I wanted to see if I could shoot through
- 43:19Speaker 2: two deer at once. So there was the dn R
- 43:23Speaker 2: was there, and they put out a bunch of food
- 43:25Speaker 2: and I went and sat in a blind and I
- 43:27Speaker 2: think I shot twenty two and wow, nine hours maybe,
- 43:32Speaker 2: but I shot through several at a time because they
- 43:34Speaker 2: would be all they're skinny. I mean, I got to
- 43:36Speaker 2: tell you that like Arkansas, their deer, like their world
- 43:39Speaker 2: records are probably like one hundred and twenty inchro you
- 43:41Speaker 2: know what I mean, Like they're all skinny. They might
- 43:44Speaker 2: be one hundred and thirty.
- 43:44Speaker 1: It was just like Arkansas pounding the table swamp.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Box might be a little yeah, they're they're not that, they're.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Not that big saying and they're skinny in Arkansas that
- 43:56Speaker 1: are just like what.
- 43:59Speaker 2: So I come from Iowa, so unfortunately, but I don't
- 44:05Speaker 2: pull that much poundage anymore, just because it's a little overkill.
- 44:08Speaker 2: The technology on the bows nowadays are so good and
- 44:11Speaker 2: the way you can build them with speed and you know,
- 44:15Speaker 2: kinetic energy and all that kind of stuff. With the arrows.
- 44:18Speaker 1: What's your target bowl coming.
- 44:19Speaker 2: At sixty pounds? And that's the max that you're allowed
- 44:23Speaker 2: to shoot in competition, And because I if I can,
- 44:28Speaker 2: so we shoot distance fifty meters right, Well, if I
- 44:32Speaker 2: can shoot ninety pounds all day long because I'm using
- 44:35Speaker 2: my feet and I'm shooting against you, I mean that's
- 44:37Speaker 2: a big difference when it comes to getting the arrow faster,
- 44:41Speaker 2: you know, getting there the arrow to the target faster
- 44:43Speaker 2: without being deflected by wind or anything like that. Well,
- 44:47Speaker 2: at that point it now becomes an advantage to me.
- 44:50Speaker 2: So they just capped at everything at sixty pounds.
- 44:55Speaker 1: So tell that story bringing that first bow home and
- 44:57Speaker 1: trying to get that thing figured out. So I bring
- 45:00Speaker 1: it up and why didn't you go why why didn't
- 45:02Speaker 1: you ask the why didn't you say, hey, man, can
- 45:06Speaker 1: you help me get this figured out?
- 45:07Speaker 2: Because I figured, like, if I'm going to fail, I'm
- 45:09Speaker 2: going to fail in the quietness of my garage, right
- 45:13Speaker 2: like I didn't want you know, this was something that
- 45:15Speaker 2: I knew I wanted to do. I just didn't want
- 45:18Speaker 2: someone to see me fail at it because I felt
- 45:20Speaker 2: like I knew I didn't know what I was doing.
- 45:24Speaker 2: And I and to be honest, if I walked up
- 45:26Speaker 2: to you at a boat at a bow store and
- 45:28Speaker 2: ask you to help me out, you wouldn't know what
- 45:29Speaker 2: you're doing either, you know what I mean?
- 45:31Speaker 1: Like someone guy, but a person that knows a lot
- 45:37Speaker 1: about bows they were at me, it would be more
- 45:40Speaker 1: equipped to be like, uh, let me think here a minute, Yeah,
- 45:45Speaker 1: maybe I have some ideas. Then a person has no
- 45:47Speaker 1: idea about.
- 45:48Speaker 2: Both, and that is true. I think it was a
- 45:51Speaker 2: I just didn't want people to see me if if
- 45:53Speaker 2: it backfired. Once I figured out how to shoot the bow.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Then when I go into the archery the archery range
- 46:01Speaker 2: was fin and feather in Ia City. They like, I
- 46:03Speaker 2: was like, okay, help me out. Now I know how
- 46:05Speaker 2: to shoot the bow? How do we figure out spine?
- 46:07Speaker 2: How do we figure out this? Uh? And then they
- 46:10Speaker 2: kind of guided me after that. What's your drawing thirty
- 46:14Speaker 2: two and a half? And I usually run like an
- 46:17Speaker 2: inch d loop.
- 46:20Speaker 4: When you went back to the archery store after buying
- 46:23Speaker 4: that bow and walking out of there for the first time,
- 46:25Speaker 4: what was when you went back the second time?
- 46:28Speaker 2: What was their reaction?
- 46:29Speaker 4: So they're just like, we were waiting to see what
- 46:31Speaker 4: happened with this.
- 46:33Speaker 2: So I remember going back. The guy that was helping me,
- 46:36Speaker 2: his name is Chris Mobley, and I was like, dude,
- 46:39Speaker 2: I could shoot a bow. He's like, let me see.
- 46:45Speaker 2: So I showed him and we immediately made a video.
- 46:48Speaker 2: He's like, dude, we're making a video. And we made
- 46:50Speaker 2: a video and that thing went viral. Is like the
- 46:53Speaker 2: like the only guy in the world with that arm
- 46:55Speaker 2: shooting a bow. Yeah, And even then, even like I
- 46:59Speaker 2: remember doing that a week or so after learning, two
- 47:02Speaker 2: weeks after figuring it all out, I was hitting a
- 47:06Speaker 2: pop bottle it at twenty yards pretty much every single shot. Oh, like,
- 47:11Speaker 2: within two weeks of learning even how to shoot the bow.
- 47:15Speaker 4: And those guys probably feel pretty invested in at that
- 47:18Speaker 4: point they're probably like, oh, yeah, they want to see
- 47:21Speaker 4: this work.
- 47:21Speaker 2: Yeah, at that point they're like, okay, let's figure out,
- 47:24Speaker 2: you know, how to get you some uh, you know,
- 47:26Speaker 2: better equipment, like better stuff, you know. And and for me,
- 47:29Speaker 2: it was all just because I wanted to go out
- 47:31Speaker 2: in the woods and put food on the table. And
- 47:33Speaker 2: I remember when I shot that deer. I remember being like,
- 47:37Speaker 2: like I got emotional because I'm like, this is the
- 47:40Speaker 2: time I could put food on the table for my family.
- 47:42Speaker 2: No one's telling me I can't do it, you know,
- 47:44Speaker 2: like with jobs and all that stuff. Like I'm out
- 47:46Speaker 2: here doing it, you know, like I did that. I
- 47:50Speaker 2: brought that. I brought the deer home. I hung it
- 47:51Speaker 2: in the tree. I lived in town, and I hug it.
- 47:54Speaker 2: I hung it in the tree, so I could, you know,
- 47:56Speaker 2: gut at it and all that stuff.
- 47:57Speaker 1: I gotta keep I don't even to keep asking the
- 47:59Speaker 1: same question. Hey, it's okay, can you hang a deer
- 48:02Speaker 1: in a tree by yourself?
- 48:02Speaker 2: Oh? Absolutely? You know I can climb tree stands.
- 48:06Speaker 5: We got a video of that.
- 48:07Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 48:08Speaker 8: You know.
- 48:08Speaker 2: People ask me all the time, like when you go hunting,
- 48:10Speaker 2: do you hunt on the ground or blinds like tree
- 48:12Speaker 2: stands are my favorite.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Let's make a deal. If we encounter a thing where
- 48:16Speaker 1: you just can't do it yourself, you just let me
- 48:18Speaker 1: know that you couldn't do that yourself.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Okay, I'm not saying that otherwise, well, I'm not saying
- 48:24Speaker 2: this is the safest thing because I don't have any
- 48:26Speaker 2: safety stuff on. Oh no, shit, man, But that's a
- 48:30Speaker 2: twenty think. I was a twenty one footer.
- 48:33Speaker 1: Wow, got it. That's gonna be. My next question is
- 48:37Speaker 1: with your form? Can you shoot it? Can you shoot
- 48:40Speaker 1: a downward angle? Pretty good? Yeah?
- 48:42Speaker 2: Watched it? Beautiful buck that was fifty yards.
- 48:48Speaker 1: Oh dude, he started. He had a little get up
- 48:51Speaker 1: and go before it got there.
- 48:53Speaker 2: I had to lead him a little bit.
- 48:55Speaker 1: He was a little late to the game though.
- 48:56Speaker 2: But so this this moment that we're having right now,
- 49:01Speaker 2: he went down right there. This is why this moment
- 49:05Speaker 2: for me is really awesome. So I grew up in
- 49:08Speaker 2: a that's so cool. So this is the you guys
- 49:15Speaker 2: are getting like this the good footage right now. And
- 49:17Speaker 2: I want to tell you why. So when I got
- 49:19Speaker 2: into archery, yes, it was you know, hunting, and I
- 49:21Speaker 2: grew up hunting and I never posted any of this
- 49:24Speaker 2: on social media. And it's because when I got into
- 49:27Speaker 2: the Olympic and Paralympic realm, I started getting like major
- 49:31Speaker 2: sponsors BP and Allons and things like that, and so
- 49:35Speaker 2: I have tons of footage of me hunting all over
- 49:38Speaker 2: the place with tons of things that I've harvested, and
- 49:41Speaker 2: I've never posted on social media before because I was
- 49:43Speaker 2: always concerned about the backlash for my sponsors. But guess what,
- 49:50Speaker 2: I'm retiring from competition. This is my this is my
- 49:55Speaker 2: fourth Games, and I brought it around full circle and
- 49:58Speaker 2: I really want to spend a lot of time hunting
- 50:01Speaker 2: and filming hunts and doing that kind of stuff, and
- 50:03Speaker 2: I can't do it when I'm in the US O
- 50:05Speaker 2: PC space, Like I'm you know, like I just was
- 50:08Speaker 2: you consider it of my sponsors. So you guys are
- 50:10Speaker 2: getting the very first ever you.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Thought your sponsors would be like put off and it'd
- 50:16Speaker 1: give you a bunch of financial trouble if you were
- 50:18Speaker 1: well like post and hunting stuff.
- 50:20Speaker 2: There was times like when I, yeah, like I would
- 50:22Speaker 2: you know, I would sign a big deal with you know,
- 50:24Speaker 2: BP or whatever, and they would be like, hey, we
- 50:26Speaker 2: know you hunt and stuff like that. But you know, Kim,
- 50:30Speaker 2: we're just gonna politely ask you to just kind of
- 50:32Speaker 2: keep that stuff, like if you want to show a
- 50:33Speaker 2: picture of you.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Knows you've never done anything that would harm anything. But
- 50:40Speaker 1: it was, you know, I we might have bagged a
- 50:43Speaker 1: couple with that oil spill we had, but.
- 50:46Speaker 2: You know, I uh, it's one of those things where
- 50:49Speaker 2: it was like, I respect the fact that they were
- 50:52Speaker 2: they were giving me.
- 50:54Speaker 1: I'm not hacking out. It's just it's just funny for thatspective.
- 50:58Speaker 2: It is funny. But I am happy that I can
- 51:01Speaker 2: now share that stuff. And I don't care, you know
- 51:05Speaker 2: what I mean, Like that's who I am. Anyway, that's me.
- 51:07Speaker 2: I am now to the point now where since I'm
- 51:11Speaker 2: retiring from the Team USA, I will always shoot my bow.
- 51:14Speaker 1: But could you stay in Team USA?
- 51:16Speaker 2: I could stay on Team USA, But I'm like, I
- 51:20Speaker 2: don't know how to top that.
- 51:22Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I don't know.
- 51:22Speaker 2: If they've come over with them, you know, you can't
- 51:24Speaker 2: top gold.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Plus gold plus.
- 51:27Speaker 2: So here's what's interesting about the gold medal match too,
- 51:30Speaker 2: is that I shot a world record. I shot one
- 51:34Speaker 2: point off perfect, which means if I would have took
- 51:36Speaker 2: that score into an able body tournament. I would have
- 51:38Speaker 2: won it.
- 51:39Speaker 1: That's what I was going to ask. Yeah, it's like
- 51:41Speaker 1: that's one of the questions in the back of my
- 51:43Speaker 1: head is like, what are the Olympic rules? Like, are
- 51:49Speaker 1: the rules such that you couldn't go to what do
- 51:53Speaker 1: you call the we.
- 51:55Speaker 2: Call the regular Olympics?
- 51:56Speaker 1: Again, what could you shoot the regular Olympics or can't
- 51:59Speaker 1: you shoot the gear that they have to shoot?
- 52:02Speaker 2: So yeah, I would have to switch. I would have
- 52:04Speaker 2: to switch to the recurves. But a lot of it
- 52:08Speaker 2: comes down to they don't want I mean, the reality
- 52:11Speaker 2: is they the reality is it is equipment. But I
- 52:14Speaker 2: already get like protests that already and able body competitions
- 52:18Speaker 2: for what.
- 52:18Speaker 1: So ready, So you get guys bitching about the regular competition.
- 52:24Speaker 2: Oh yeah, So I only shoot against the pair of
- 52:27Speaker 2: the Paralympic people or people with physical disabilities when it's
- 52:30Speaker 2: at like the Paralympic Games or like World Championships. All
- 52:34Speaker 2: the other tournaments I shoot against. I want to be
- 52:36Speaker 2: the best in the world, so I shoot against the
- 52:39Speaker 2: best in the world with arms right, And in twenty seventeen,
- 52:42Speaker 2: I won outdoor National Target Championships against Team USA, which
- 52:48Speaker 2: is our best guys in the world, and I won
- 52:50Speaker 2: twenty some points, and it was a little bit windy
- 52:53Speaker 2: that day, and within five minutes of me winning, a
- 52:57Speaker 2: well known archer who is very famous in a good
- 53:00Speaker 2: friend of mine complain and threw down the money and
- 53:05Speaker 2: tried to get me booted because he said I shot
- 53:07Speaker 2: in a chair, therefore I was lowered to the ground,
- 53:10Speaker 2: therefore I shot under the wind.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Who's that person?
- 53:17Speaker 2: Yeah, the reality is if I were if you were
- 53:20Speaker 2: standing beside me and I was in my chair, i'd
- 53:21Speaker 2: only been like maybe two feet foot and a half lower.
- 53:24Speaker 2: The two feet lower, So.
- 53:25Speaker 1: I don't know enough. I don't know enough about it
- 53:28Speaker 1: to like tell whether that's legitimate. I mean, the wind
- 53:31Speaker 1: thing feels fishy, but I don't know enough about the
- 53:33Speaker 1: whole thing to have like to have.
- 53:35Speaker 2: A wind blows everywhere. It was one of those things
- 53:38Speaker 2: where when I first got into archery, was.
- 53:40Speaker 1: There must have been something else. But he wasn't talking
- 53:42Speaker 1: about the wind. No, that's literally what was on the paperwork. No, No,
- 53:46Speaker 1: But was that what was in his head? Probably not.
- 53:48Speaker 2: He was just mad that I beat him.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Yeah, Like the wind seems like it seems like a
- 53:52Speaker 1: red herring. To like an equipment advantage. Yeah, whatever the hell.
- 53:55Speaker 2: Yeah. When I first started, it was cool because I
- 53:57Speaker 2: had no arms, right, you're the guy without arms that
- 53:59Speaker 2: shoots a bow. And then I started doing well and
- 54:01Speaker 2: they're like wow, Like let's say I won my first event,
- 54:04Speaker 2: like wow, congrats you won. And then I started really
- 54:06Speaker 2: winning and then they're like, wait a minute, you have
- 54:09Speaker 2: an unfair advantage. And then it turned into you know
- 54:12Speaker 2: how so.
- 54:12Speaker 1: If I gave you arms right now, like what you
- 54:15Speaker 1: got arms, You're not gonna change your shooting for him.
- 54:19Speaker 2: I'd probably find a surgeon to remove them.
- 54:28Speaker 4: I'm curious like that, Like his form is like in
- 54:37Speaker 4: those competitions, is form regulated? No, right, because like that's
- 54:41Speaker 4: when I think about it. I think that's what really
- 54:44Speaker 4: struck me watching you. It was like you put a
- 54:47Speaker 4: target out there, here's a guy, here's a bow, here's
- 54:51Speaker 4: an arrow. Arrow goes in the target. If I were
- 54:55Speaker 4: doing this, if I were competing against you, I'd have
- 54:58Speaker 4: the same equipment, same set up and everything. So like
- 55:02Speaker 4: other than saying you have to have two feet on
- 55:05Speaker 4: the ground or whatever, I don't like if.
- 55:06Speaker 2: That's a rule, you know, there actually is a rule,
- 55:09Speaker 2: Like that's like that where before I, before I got
- 55:11Speaker 2: into archery, they said you gotta have one foot in
- 55:13Speaker 2: front of the line and one foot behind the line.
- 55:15Speaker 2: Oh oh, And I was like, well, I sit in
- 55:17Speaker 2: a chair, so they made an exception for me. You
- 55:22Speaker 2: just put the legs of the chair above the line
- 55:24Speaker 2: and the two back. Yeah, I have to have the
- 55:26Speaker 2: chair asked to straight the line. One of the cool
- 55:28Speaker 2: things though about archery that I and I love a lot,
- 55:32Speaker 2: is and I tell people this all the time, is
- 55:34Speaker 2: that when they ask me, why did you really get
- 55:36Speaker 2: into archery, Yes, it was because I wanted to provide
- 55:38Speaker 2: and put food on the table. But archery doesn't care
- 55:40Speaker 2: I have no arms. The boat just wants to be shot.
- 55:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 55:44Speaker 2: If you take archery in the Paralympic space, it's one
- 55:49Speaker 2: of the only events in all of Paralympics that we
- 55:53Speaker 2: that we could take our scores and put it with
- 55:55Speaker 2: able by scores and we would have beat them or
- 55:58Speaker 2: tied them or been on the same pages them. Because
- 56:03Speaker 2: if you look at I don't own a bash swimming
- 56:05Speaker 2: or anything like that, but you have swim and you
- 56:06Speaker 2: have different categories, like if you have no arms, you
- 56:09Speaker 2: race against only people with no arms, or like somebody
- 56:12Speaker 2: who maybe has no legs because you know of the
- 56:14Speaker 2: way the rules are, and they might have won a
- 56:17Speaker 2: gold medal, but you take their time against Michael Phelps,
- 56:21Speaker 2: and Michael Phelps is blowing them out of the water, right.
- 56:24Speaker 2: But you take me an archery and you put me
- 56:27Speaker 2: against the legit best olympian in the world, him and I.
- 56:32Speaker 2: It could be a coin toss. I could beat him.
- 56:35Speaker 2: And that's why I think it's with the same yeah,
- 56:37Speaker 2: the same we run the same equipment, we rock and roll.
- 56:39Speaker 2: It's just mental and who has you know, who has
- 56:41Speaker 2: the game that day and it literally you know I
- 56:44Speaker 2: can win. And that's why I love archery so much
- 56:47Speaker 2: because that's one of the only sports that I can
- 56:50Speaker 2: do where I'm not stereotyped as an athlete or divisioned
- 56:54Speaker 2: down or whatever. You know, I can just be the
- 56:57Speaker 2: best in the world. Mic drop.
- 57:02Speaker 1: Turn the machine off? And what uh? When I was
- 57:09Speaker 1: watching that profile piece on you you can change a
- 57:14Speaker 1: tire on a car, I said, I was done talking
- 57:19Speaker 1: about bomb back end. You can change a tire on
- 57:21Speaker 1: a car, But okay, can you what about installing components
- 57:27Speaker 1: on a bow? When you get like little teeny little screws.
- 57:30Speaker 1: What do you do?
- 57:30Speaker 2: Ready for this? I do all my own stuff, I said,
- 57:34Speaker 2: they send me the bottle. I set it up by myself.
- 57:37Speaker 1: If you want to take an Alan key, you want
- 57:41Speaker 1: to take an Alan screw, and you want to wed
- 57:44Speaker 1: the Allen key and the Allan screw, and then you
- 57:46Speaker 1: want to put that in a little teeny hole and
- 57:48Speaker 1: line up those threads and go.
- 57:50Speaker 2: Righty tidy boom. I can do it. I believe. I
- 57:56Speaker 2: believe in our tree. You gotta have confidence in your equipment.
- 57:58Speaker 2: And the only way that I'm gonna have confidence in
- 58:00Speaker 2: my stuff is if I am the only one that
- 58:02Speaker 2: puts my feet on it.
- 58:07Speaker 4: I think you could have everybody in this room work
- 58:10Speaker 4: on your boat and you'd be the only person who.
- 58:11Speaker 2: Puts That's true, That's true. Just a side note, real quick.
- 58:16Speaker 2: I actually am a professional drag racer.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Now.
- 58:19Speaker 2: I have a professional drag racing license, and I raise
- 58:21Speaker 2: a pro mode car with like a you know, several
- 58:24Speaker 2: thousand horse powered car, and I drive it with my feet,
- 58:27Speaker 2: and I work on it with my feet, and I
- 58:28Speaker 2: do all this stuff with it on my feet, you know,
- 58:30Speaker 2: with my feet. And I joke all the time that
- 58:32Speaker 2: I'm probably the only person in the world that kind
- 58:33Speaker 2: of footpen foot pound to a car. But I've always
- 58:39Speaker 2: been I've always been gifted to use my feet like hands. Yeah,
- 58:43Speaker 2: so you know one of the things that my dad,
- 58:45Speaker 2: my dad was my principal. You know, I went to
- 58:47Speaker 2: a school, but my dad was also the principal of
- 58:50Speaker 2: the school. And during some pe things where like let's say,
- 58:55Speaker 2: they're just like something I can't do in Pe, he
- 58:57Speaker 2: would take me down to his buddy's mechanic shop and
- 58:59Speaker 2: I would in the hour. So I learned because I
- 59:03Speaker 2: always love mechanics and how things work and designing and
- 59:07Speaker 2: things like that. So that's how I learned, Like I
- 59:10Speaker 2: think the dexterity in my toes, learning how to work
- 59:13Speaker 2: on my own bow swapping mods, you know all that stuff?
- 59:17Speaker 1: Do you when you were trying to You're talking about
- 59:21Speaker 1: applying for jobs and people wouldn't give you a chance.
- 59:23Speaker 1: But what sorts of jobs are you applying for? Manufacturing?
- 59:25Speaker 5: Or No?
- 59:27Speaker 2: Definitely not fast food?
- 59:28Speaker 1: No?
- 59:30Speaker 2: Why is there a toe print my burger? A lot
- 59:34Speaker 2: of it. The ones I remember specifically were like just
- 59:37Speaker 2: driving jobs, Like I was just going to be like,
- 59:39Speaker 2: let's say, an O'Reilly's delivery driver, drive and deliver parts,
- 59:44Speaker 2: you know, AutoZone things, you know, stuff like that that
- 59:46Speaker 2: I could do, you know, easily. I remember one of
- 59:50Speaker 2: them was I even did tell marketing for a little bit,
- 59:53Speaker 2: but then I got fired because I couldn't type faster
- 59:55Speaker 2: than twenty one words per minute. You know, I type twenty.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: But like, ah, it doesn't make the gut, you know,
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: like just like little things like that, you know. So
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: they weren't like jobs I couldn't do. I just would
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: walk in and you would immediately see their face like, oh,
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: he has no arms, he can't do anything. It's funny
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: because when I won my solver in twenty twelve, I
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: came back into the town that I lived in, and
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: everybody who wouldn't hired me, like they weren't going to
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: give me a job, or like, hey, you want a job.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: I was like, wait a minute, that's backwards. But the
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: reality was is that I they saw what I did,
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: and they were educated by the fact that okay, maybe
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: he could have done sure. Man, you know, the education
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: fourteen years ago about what people can do with disabilities
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: was not that great. Right now, you can see what
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: people with disabilities can do. You have people without legs
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: claiming Mount Everest. You know what I mean, Like, people
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: are amazing if you just give them a chance to
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: prove what they can do.
- 1:00:54Speaker 7: Really, yeah, I imagine you're a pioneer for other armless archers.
- 1:00:58Speaker 7: You mentioned there might be a few or out there
- 1:01:00Speaker 7: that are using your release.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Yes, I'm actually excited about it. Actually, in Paris there
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: was four armless archers wow, that all had And and
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: how you get into the games is you have to
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: set shoot elite scores and you have to like go
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: through a trials process. It's not like you can just
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: show up. They always want the best at these games.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: And all of these archers I've helped get there.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: And in fact, for La there'll probably be eight of
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: them and they're shooting like legit goodscor girls. Yeah, so
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: it's it's the number one ranked women archer right now
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: is a girl from India who's seventeen with no worms.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: I saw, Yes, she actually wanted bronze at this games
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: and team rounds. And it's crazy because the joke is
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: kind of like every country is getting theirselves an armless
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: archer because they all understand the benefits of having an
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: anonymous archer, I guess. But now the reality too is
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: that it if you give somebody a purpose, they're going
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: to perform better than somebody without a purpose. And you
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: give that armless person. Now, like just from me speaking
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: of what archery gave to me and how I felt,
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: and now you have all these the other armless archers
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: in this situation now have found that they can be
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: the best in the world at something. They're going to
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: work so hard at it, they're going to figure it out.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: And now that's what you're seeing. You're seeing armless archers
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: right now. The four that were at the Games, you
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: know three, there's three armless people in the top probably
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: ten in the world.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: What do they call the what do they call whatever
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: happened in development that it would cause you to be
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: born without arms?
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: Probably drinking. Really no, I don't I really, I really
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: don't know. They did some tests on my mom, but
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: they didn't find any.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: So it's not a known there's not like a known
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: name of a syndrome or something that wouldn't No.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: Back in nineteen eighty two, there was a bunch of
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: stuff that like not drugs, but like over the counter
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: drugs that people were taking that were causing birth effects,
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: but supposedly that was not what happened with me.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: And then do most do you hang out with just
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: like your normal buddies from hanging out? Do you mostly
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: hang out with just total able bodied dudes that you
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: just have always known? Or have you become buddies with
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: a lot of disabled shooters.
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: And I am buddies with a lot of disabled shooters
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: and people like that, But I spend ninety nine percent
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: of my time hanging out people that have arms.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: Yeah, just like dudes.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: You know, dudes, I know, you know, people like to
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: hunt and fish and drive cars and have fires.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: You you mentioned.
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: Earlier shooting at twenty two at a squirrel.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: How do you shoot a rifle or long gun or whatever.
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: Yeah, Actually, if I would if I were to have
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: known this now what happened back then. But before I
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: got into archery, I was probably twelve years old. I
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: got my first twin is a Marlin ten twenty two,
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: and I could hit pennies at fifty yards and I
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: just thought, like everybody could do that, Like I just
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: have that gift of being able to like hit things,
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: Like I'm a really good aim and I think it
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: comes down to my mental process and like how I
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: mentally process.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: It, But same, how do you shoot? Yeah?
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: Yeah, So when it comes to handguns in my book,
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: they're called foot guns, but I can actually hold them
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: between my toes. My left foot holds like kind of
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: like the grip, and then my right foot I kind
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: of reach around and you can use one of my
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: toes to activate the shot. I have videos. I should
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: have sent you all these videos. But when it comes
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: to a rifle, I usually sit. I have to sit
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: down on the ground and a gentleman. Let a gentleman
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: cross my legs again for that one. And then my
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: right foot I can actually hold the stock and then
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: I can reach the trigger with my left shoulder, so
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: the butt of the gun is on my right shoulder
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: and then the left. Then I can activate the shot
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: with my left shoulder.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: There. Yeah, man, I.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: Figured it out. I don't know. I've just been this
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: guy who's always been able to figure everything out and
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: wanted to hunt and do all that stuff.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Yeah, when you were little, did you ever have like
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: you're so optimistic and capable now and like not intimidated
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: by shit, But did you ever have any kind of
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: crises when you were a kid about do you know
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: you always had this attitude or did you arrive at
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: this attitude.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: I definitely had the attitude when I was younger. But
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: then my dad would just be like, get your shit together,
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: you know, Like the reality is is that you're not
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: going to have arms. That's the reality, right, Like you
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: could sit on the couch and cry complain about having
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: no arms for the rest of your life, or you could,
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: you know, put on that those clothes right now and
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: go out in the woods with me and let's go hunt,
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: you know what I mean, Like, let's go figure out
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: what life is really about and live how you want
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: to live. That's what he would always tell me. So
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: every time I will get in that slump of I
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: want to play sports right and never getting picked first
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: and always having to sell on the sidelines and watch
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: everybody else play sports and just never being able to
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: be a part of anything. When I would start feeling
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: down about those moments, then he would just be like, dude,
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: gear crap together, like you can do this. So I
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: remember one day I wanted to be a professional basketball player,
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: and instead of saying you can't do that, he actually
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: went out and bought me a hoop and said here,
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: I want you start training right now. Like that's how
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: my dad was. He was never like you can't do anything.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: He was always like, you know, you got a full
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: life ahead of you. You can just you can be awesome.
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: If you want to beat you have to make it happen, obviously,
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: but go make it happen.
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: And what an incredible dad.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that's why I'm saying, like when I talk about
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: being adopted, like, I'm perfectly fine with the fact that
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: I got adopted into a family who was like that.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: Yeah, what's he think? Now?
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: Oh?
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: He won?
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: He Uh. This was a pretty special moment for me
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: because in Paris, I got hat my family there for
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: the first time and we we've called it the Memory
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: Games for a long time, and they were in the
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: stands when I won, and I actually brought him down
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: and we walked out onto the podium together from the
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: first person to be able to do that, which is
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: really cool. And we're on the podium and my dad goes,
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: how do you how come we didn't shoot a perfect score?
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: Of course he was of course he was joking, right
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: because he was crying and happy, and it was like
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: you missed perfect. By if you would have shot one
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: point better, you would have been the first person in
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: history of the Olympic or Paralympic Games to shoot perfect
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: and that's that record would have stood forever in the
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: history of it whatever. Like, well, Dad, I didn't I
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: missed one. But it was that whole experience just being
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: in Paris with my family. It was pretty cool.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: Yeah, what what what's the walk me through what the
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: Olympics is like in general? Like how long did you
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: go for?
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: I was there for three weeks O my family came
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: over for seven days. I ended up when they got
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: there staying in Airbnb with them. I didn't even stay
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: in the Olympic village during that time. Yes, there was
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: cardboard beds at the village, means well.
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: That was a big media story.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: It was like all over Yeah, you always had all
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: these Like I remember a guy with a BMX bike
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: showing you how crazy these beds work. But the whole
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: the whole bed is made out of cardboard so they
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: can recycle it environmentally friendly and he was like doing.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: Friendly than just a bed.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: Basically, the Olympics have kind of overcorrected on not leaving
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: a crazy footprint, Yeah, like a physical footprint after the
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: games are done, and so they went with cardboard beds.
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: Cardboard beds here. However, it was a problem, Well for
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: a lot Yeah, it was not for me because I
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: like hunting and living on a you know the ground, right,
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: So for me, I was like, hey, what are you
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: guys complaining about? But there was a lot of people
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: complaining about the fact that there was a cardboard We're
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: at the Olympics and it's a cardboard.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: So it's a big thick sheet of cardboard lay on.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: Well, it's basically imagine your bed frame being called cardboard
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: and then there's a little thin mattress on there.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: So what were they griping about?
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: Just think, yeah, a lot of athletes that felt that
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: trained their whole life for this moment and then they
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: were gonna maybe not get the best night's sleep before
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: their competition on a cardboard bed.
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: When you're sleeping, how do you know what the legs
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: of the better mate?
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: I'm just relaying what I was told.
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: To me. To me, it doesn't make any sense. Like
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: I was like, perfectly fine with it, but you are right.
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: There was a lot of people that were.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: Complaining, like I've been through. I've been through more challenges
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: in situation.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: I don't care about a cardboard cardboard bed, you know, like.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: I got you, I think they have.
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: Lebron James made a big stink about it.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: Well, they actually spent like thirty million dollars and went
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: to their own private hotel and lived in luxury. But
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: which is fine, you know, But as far as the
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: games are concerned, it is. It is awesome because I
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: will tell you that it's kind of for me. Every
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: four years when I've gone, it's that two week period
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: of time or three week period of time where nobody
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: hates anybody.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: Oh is that right?
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: Like everybody's getting along. You literally are like if there's
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: a war going on, you're sitting beside the people who
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: like you literally have the two countries that are at
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: war sitting beside each other, talking, sharing food and laughing.
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: Hum.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: It is one of the coolest things.
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I wouldn't have guessed that. I guess.
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not like I've seen it, you know, even
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: in the field, like in the field of play and
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: they're like, let's say basketball, volleyball, whatever. Afterwards, they're very friendly,
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: they're you know, you know hugging it out like it
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: is a very like they're all understand whether they're for
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: and it's just to have sport, and they forget about
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: what's happening at home, and people are just people. And
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: I've seen it every single games and it is just
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: so like it's a super awesome memory that I have
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: because you just see you just see these two countries
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: that are having a war right now, but yet when
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: they're at the games, they're just like completely friends.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: When you're when you shot for the Olympics, the how
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: many like how often you actually shooting to arrive at
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: like all through all the eliminations, you know what I'm saying,
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: Like how how many arrows are you shooting?
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Quite a bit fifteen arrows per elimination round and you
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: go through what five five elimination rounds.
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: And that plays out over what period of time?
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: One day?
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: Well the first so all of a sudden it's like
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: here we go.
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: Yeah, well for us, it was we had one match
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: like the first day, but it was raining and the
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: way they did the schedule, so then next day we
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: had four matches just bam bam, bam, bam bam.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: So that's what it comes.
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: Down yeah, it's one and up.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: I thought it being more like milked out.
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: No, no, and we only get one metal, Like when
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: we go we get a shot at one metal.
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: Gotcha, you can't.
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: It's not like if I don't now I can get it.
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: Yeah right, I could go after another one tomorrow, but
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: that's not how it is.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: It's just that one shot yep.
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: And if you make a fist right now, that's the
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: bulls eye that we have to hit at fifty meters,
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: so it's like a three inch circle.
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: So when you get a deer at fifty you're like,
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: you just flung somewhererow at three hundred rights three and ten. Yeah,
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: tell you what that's all about.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: Yeah, Like I that was actually the world record. So ironically,
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: there's all these videos right now with these guys shooting,
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: like there's a guy, uh dude, perfect just did like
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: a half a mile shot with a bow, and there's
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: all these you shoot like five hundred yards. But what
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: they don't know. I still have the record, and this
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: is why. This is what they don't know is that
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: in order to be a Guinness Record for the longest
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: most accurate archery shot, your boat can only be sixty
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: pound poll and you only get three attempts and you
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: have to call the shot. You don't get it to
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: sit out there and fling it like you have to
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: be like this is for score, and you shoot and
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: if you hit it on that temp, then you get
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: the record.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: Nop.
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: Like you know they're out there all day shooting to
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: hit half a mile and then like we got the record.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: Well, and they're rigging up an aim point.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: There's lots of stuff. Yeah, you don't get any of
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: that stuff. You literally like, so I wanted to set
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: that record just to you know, have an able bodied record.
- 1:13:41Speaker 8: I guess really, so with your like competitions that you
- 1:13:44Speaker 8: said that you got a lot of backlash from winning
- 1:13:46Speaker 8: all these competitions, did you get a lot of backlash
- 1:13:48Speaker 8: from like for holding this record, Like a lot of
- 1:13:51Speaker 8: guys reaching out and saying, lol, I shot five hundred
- 1:13:53Speaker 8: yards or no.
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: I mean I did have some people that would send
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: me messages like I could shoot farther than that, and
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: I just I don't give them the I bet you can't.
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: But that doesn't sound like the Internet. This is why
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: I don't feed into the internet much. They're the comments
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: on that shot will be like, well, you know, because
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: he draws the bow back further than us. Because he
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: uses his legs, the arrow goes further. Like I mean, yes,
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: kind of, but that's not the point of what's happening here. Like,
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: just because I use my legs, it doesn't mean I
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: draw it back further, because I get it. But a
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: lot of them just don't quite understand the concept of
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: and and so I just let them bash or have
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: their joys, and I laugh about it and move on
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: because it's not worth it's not worth my energy to like,
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: you know.
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: It's so funny that there's an impulse to put the
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: armless guy in his place.
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember when I posted that I had just
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: got my age deal.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: That's no arm him down a road door with a
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: silver spoon.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: I listen. I can tell you right now that those
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: people who comment that I laughed it makes my day,
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: I like, because none of it makes When I got
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: my professional driver's license for my NHR or my my
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: drag racing license to be certified to legally drag race,
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: and I posted the picture and it went viral because
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: I'm the only armless guy who have done this, right,
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: the amount of people that were like going on there
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: and being like, how did he even sign his name?
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: Uh?
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: You know this is fake because he eat of them arms.
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: He couldn't even sign the name on the on the paper.
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: And and then the one guy goes, I would never
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: line up against him because what if we're doing one
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: hundred miles an hour and the axle breaks and then
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: he's going to wreck into me. I'm like, like, if
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: the askle breaks were all done anyway, Like like I
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: just want to go there and just comment, but I
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: don't say any of that stuff. And then one guy
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: said something about like I don't know what I would
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: do if I have a race against an armless guy.
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: And then my buddy commented like, you probably don't want
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: any of him. And one of the reasons why he's
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: fast is because he cut his arms off to save weight.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: And I, oh, my goodness, cause I hadn't. I told
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: my buddies like, dude, stop coming. You're just hanging it
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: on now. Now the backlash is just gonna come even more.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: But I don't know, have you ever heard of that
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: fellow named Shakespeare? But uh, what heavy is the head?
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: The wars the crown? Is that Shakespeare? I believe so
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: isn't it. I think so either way, heavy is the
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: head that where's the crown?
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: I don't wear a crown, So.
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: You got that big ass gold thing.
- 1:16:40Speaker 9: Yeah, you could make a crown. So heavy is the
- 1:16:46Speaker 9: heavy is the foot that carries the gold, that carries
- 1:16:49Speaker 9: that carries the gold. You know, just something I wanted
- 1:16:52Speaker 9: to just say real quick is China.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: I knew I was going to win that match. And
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: it's the first time in my professional career that I
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: knew I was going to win.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: So how do you know?
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: Because when when he was shooting a good game, Oh
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: he was rolling, he was good. So as the higher
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: ranked archer, you get to decide if you get a
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: shoot first or second, and it is in your advantage
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: to shoot first because then you set the tone.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: And I can't just nod, nact like I know what
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: that means? What does that mean?
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: So let's say you and I are shooting in an
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: event and based on qualification.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: Round, no, no, what setting the tone?
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: So if you, let's say you get decided to shoot
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: first or second, you shoot first, right, Yeah, you shoot
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: a ten? Now I shoot because you alternately, Oh that's
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: the tone. Now oh I just saw you shoot a ten.
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: I got to hang with it, I see, and a
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: lot of people can't do that.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: I got you.
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: But because I was a lower ranked archer the entire games,
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: I shot second, the entire all of it. So when
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: I went into the gold medal match, right before we
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: went out, he goes, you're shooting first, and I was like, oh,
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: he's done. He's done. And the reason is because he
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: was more concerned about getting into my head about my
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: game than he was about his own game. Because he
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: was trying to mentally throw me off. He didn't realize
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: I didn't care. I didn't care for shot first A
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: second like I don't, I don't care, I don't, I
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: don't worry about that stuff, and he was worried about it.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: And if you notice, like closer to the end of
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: the match, he started just And it's funny because there's
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: one match or one era when you shoot and he
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: almost shoots an eight and he looks at his bow
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: and he like pretends to justice site, Well, that's this
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: far off. His bow didn't just poof in thirty seconds
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: go from bullseye to this far off because of a
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: site moved, But he acted like his site was off,
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: and I was like, Oh, he's so done. He didn't
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: want the people on TV will look and like, oh,
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: like you better act like my site was messed up. Yeah,
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: and it was. And I knew that, like I knew
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: it was over. He was sowing his head and I
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: knew when I walked out there. It was like the
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: first time, like this piece came over me and I
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: was calm, and I was like, this dude's going this
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: guy's losing. So I don't know, I can't explain it.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: I've had that feeling with the deer before too, where
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: I'm just like, oh, seventy four yards. So in Iowa,
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: i get three buck tags because I have no arms
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: and I can take advantage of the disability season.
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: I'm sure it's spent the unfairness. Yeah whoa.
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: So yeah, I'm out hunting and it's like I'm saving
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: my tag because I have one that I'm watching and
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: it's like the last day and this buck comes out,
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: I think, is I don't I don't even know if
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: we had it named, but it was a deer that
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: we knew we had to take out of the herd. Right,
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: it was the antlers on the right were deformed, and
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: he kind of walked with a limp or whatever, and
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: I just knew we needed to get him out. And
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: I was like, well, I don't want to just waste
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: a tag, so he's good to eat, and I'll just
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: take this one out of the herd. I still have
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: two more buck tags seventy four yards and and we
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: filmed it, and it's my brother. He films it. And
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: my brother takes the camera as soon as I whack him,
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: and he goes like thirty yards and he turns to me,
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: and I'm like, like excited, right, and he's like, dude,
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: how does it feel to shoot your own kind? I
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: was like, oh what, I just shot it disabled deer.
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: I was like, oh no, oh no, it was good eating.
- 1:20:25Speaker 7: But what's more nerve wracking the gold medal shot or
- 1:20:28Speaker 7: shooting that buck?
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: Oh? I don't know.
- 1:20:33Speaker 7: Composure, which yeah, really good.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: The deer the deer honestly none, I don't know. I
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: just have this gift so the adrenaline all that stuff
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: doesn't happen to laughterwards. Yeah, that's huge. I'd love some
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: of that.
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: Hopefully I could do that in triviat adrenaline.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: You're like fever, trivia fever.
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: Your arms are shaking like this.
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: No, I just get into a room where I'm like,
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: all these these guys know a bunch of to me
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: useless information that I don't know.
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: And I wanted I wanted to ask.
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: I saw something that I'm actually more jealous of than
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: the gold medal.
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: You got to meet Jackie Chan.
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: Oh, yes, you got to meet jackiet So can you
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: walk me through that? Like, well, how'd that come to be?
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: Oh? I should probably, I bet I couldn't show some clips.
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: The vice president of the Olympics was like, sent me
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: a message the day before and he's like, I think
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: Jackie Chan wants to meet you, and I'm like, so,
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: I was like, come on, Jackie Chan. Ever know what
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: everybody says they want to meet me, and then it
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: never happens. And so I shot my first match and
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: as soon as it was over, they pulled me off
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: the side, and apparently Jackie Chan showed up specifically to
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: come watch me shoot that match, and we went in
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: the back and I got to meet him, and of
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: course I watched all his movies when I was younger,
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: and it was pretty cool. One of the funniest things though,
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: that happened was he picked up my bow and he's
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: like whoa, like in his accent, like whoa you know,
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: and then and then he then we took a picture
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: and then he told me to get out of the
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: picture because he just wanted a picture with the bow.
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: He's like, he's like, now you go. And it was
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: like it's cool red, white and blue bow that had
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: made for me just for the games, and it was
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: like this, you know, it's the one only one that's
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: like it, right, and he just wanted the picture with
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: the boat. Is he a big archery guy, No, he's
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: not really. He's a fan of people doing incredible things
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: that they never thought that people can do. So like
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: he wanted to meet me because of the fact that
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: I was just, you know, an archer without arms that
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: was doing all right. And then after I won that
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: after I won, so him and I have are still
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: stayed friends now. So after I won, he sent me
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: a message. He goes, I had what he said, I
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: had no doubt that you were going to win. And
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: then I said, ah, thank, I said ah thanks, and
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: he goes, but I think he could have done a
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: little bit better. I'm like, what do you mean? And
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: then yeah, the tiger pair came out. He's like, well,
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: you almost beat the world. You almost got the perfect score.
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: So I was like the second time I've heard that.
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: I'm like, when you look at that one nine you got, uh,
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: do you know what happened? Oh?
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it just wasn't it was. It was a
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: little bit to the I think it was high or
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: something like that.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: Did you know did you know like as you were
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: letting it go?
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it just wasn't correct. In fact, if you
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: watch the video, you actually see me tell the crowd
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: it's okay. Like as soon as the shoot I got
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: new and I'm like, it's okay, it's fine, Like I
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: just knew, like like, this.
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: Isn't me falling apart. Yeah, this is the one.
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: Time I knew exactly I drifted a little bit when
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: the shot broke and it went right there.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: And you didn't let it. You didn't let it melt
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: you down.
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: No, you know, one of the one of the cool things.
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: And I talk about this quite a bit as far
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: as people want to know if I'll over coach someone
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: to be the best at something, but the to the
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: to the measures that I had to take to be
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: the best in the mental space, to handle all of that,
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: like the ways I had to trick my body and mentally.
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: So one of the things is I didn't shoot my
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: bow for like three months going before I went to
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: the games.
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: No shit, Yeah, how's that helpful?
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna tell you why. So when you in
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: the previous games, like I've shot shot shot, I knew
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: it was the best. I knew I could win, and
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: then I would get there and something were happened, something
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: happened and it was out of my control. Like in Rio,
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: a knock broke and put me out right. I put
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: so much pressure on myself that I've trained for this
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: moment for four years I need to win. That kind
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: of mentality can come back and bite you because then
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: you start putting too much pressure while you're shooting. Let's
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: say you make a bad shot. Then you start falling
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: apart because now you just wasted four years of your life.
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: I've been there in previous games. I felt that feeling.
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: So I had to tell my body my brain that
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: going into this games like it didn't matter what happened,
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: because if I don't do good, I can just blame
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: it on the fact that I didn't prepare. But I had prepared.
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: It was a way of telling myself that it's okay.
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: It's okay that you don't win. You're capable of.
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: When you started that break though, When you started that,
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: when you set the bow down, you set the bow
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: down in a position of perfection.
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I knew it was fine.
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: No, I mean, like not on me the bow, but
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: you yeah, yeah, yeah, like when you called it, you
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: were there, yeah, yep. And if you weren't there, then
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: you couldn't take the break. But you just got there
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: and you knew you were there. Yep.
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: I knew it.
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: And then the next era you shot wasn't for competition.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: See when you got there, you shot a little bit right, Yeah.
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: Just a little bit like ten fifteen arrows, and then
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: I just rolled right into it.
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: Were you feeling good?
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I knew it was over. I knew there was.
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: There was a moment in time during qualification round where
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: I was having a problem with my release and I
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: took it apart and I cleaned it up and I
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: went back to shooting, and it was like crisp and clean,
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: and my arrows just instantly went to like the grouping
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: of a you know, a three inch circle, and I
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: was just like, oh, the last time I release broke,
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: I was in sixty fourth place and I came back
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: to win the World Championship in Dubai, and I was like, oh,
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: that happened now, and sure enough. It just it's a
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: way of putting your your It's a way of just
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: going out through and enjoying the moment and not having
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: all the pressure of you have to win, because I
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: know if I just do what I've trained to do, like,
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: I'm gonna be fine. You know, it's the pressure. Everybody says, Oh,
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: it's the Olympic or it's the Paralympics, right, and there's
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: all this pressure that you have to perform. But what's
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: the difference between that one and at your house? The
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: ways I trained at my house, though, have are not
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: just what everybody else does either. So like I've jumped
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: out of planes and then when I'll land by the
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: target and I'll shoot until my adrenaline wears off, then
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: I'll jump out of planes and then like or I
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: had this idea in twenty thirteen where I won.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: I just did that for the first time, and holy cow,
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: it's a blast. Well yeah, I mean, you're like you're
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: in an altered.
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: Sea because I it doesn't help me.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: I just felt like you're in an altered statement.
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: Yeah, man, but your heart gets it naturally, creates adrenaline
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: and you start pumping. I always thought it'd be cool
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: to jump out of a plane up in Alaska for
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: a grizzly bear hunt and then like land close to
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: one and then shoot a grizzly bear.
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: It can't hunt the same day fly I know, so
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: it won't.
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: Work, but anyway, so I would. I would do that
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: kind of stuff.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: And before I get to land and sit there to land,
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: sit there for a day.
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: At eleven fifty eight pm.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: You able to do that. But those are the kind
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: of extents of the training that I took. There was
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: a shot that right before I took the three the
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: three month break, I opened the doors of my house
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: and I take my drag, my pro mod car, and
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: I put it out at one hundred yards and then
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: on the back side of it, I put a target
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: with a balloon, and then I take my Olympic medal
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: that I won in London and I wrap it around
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: the balloon, so I have an eight inch balloon at
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: one hundred yards and then I go on the backside
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: of my house, and I shoot through my arrow goes
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: in the back of the house, through the house, out
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: the front door, through a little window in my car
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: about this big, through the car, through the metal, and
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: then hits the balloon. And if I mess up with
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: any of it, I hit the house, hit the car,
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: which is expensive, hit the balloon, hit the metal that
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: I can't replace. Like I added, I was shooting to
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: add value, to take one of your kids be like, oh,
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: don't move. I actually joke about that one time. I
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: was somewhere and I said, they said, did you ever
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: shoot an apple off someone's head? And I said, I mean,
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: I feel like I'm good enough to not miss the apple,
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: but I can't control the person who's standing there, what
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: they flinch or whatever. And then I said, but honestly,
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: I guess it really doesn't matter because if I do
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: miss and the guy ended up getting getting hit, I said,
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: I saw, I'm not gonna go to jail because I
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: don't leave fingerprints anyway.
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: You know, we're working on this deal. Me and Randall
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: are finishing up this history of the Mountain Men that
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: we're working on. We did one on We did one
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: called the Long hunters, and it was about the deer
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: white tailed deer skin tray Daniel Boone and them. Now
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: we're doing one about the Beaver Market, so Jim Bridge
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: or Jeed Smith, and there's a story that's in there.
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: There's these two guys that used to have a drinking
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: trick where they would shoot cups off each other's.
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: Heads with bows or sling shows guns.
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: They'd shoot cups off each other's heads. Is like just
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: like a party trick they would do. They get the
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: big fight over woman, right.
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: I forget what it was, but they had a quarrel.
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: Yeah, they get in a big fight. They eventually pat
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: shut up and to demonstrate just how good they are
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: with each other, how cool they are now, they go
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: to do their drinking trick and he smokes the guy.
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: Oh no, he might not have totally gotten over that.
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: He probably definitely not over that argument.
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: Kills the guy, and then another guy kills that guy
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: because he knew because he knew it was a mistake,
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: and he drowned, and that guy drowned.
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: So the moral of the story is, don't shoot anybody.
- 1:30:24Speaker 4: Yeah, he'd be careful with your party tricks.
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: The amount of people that die in this thing is unbelievable.
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: Is that a story online? I can read read about
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: you have to listen.
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: It's audio, original audio.
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: I'm not to listen to it, and we'll tell you
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: the whole damn story either way.
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: When people think, who's the writer that hit somebody with
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: a bow? Burrows? Right? I don't know. Yeah, didn't Burrows?
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: Tuck that up? I thought Burrows shot? U? I think
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: didn't didn't Burrows kill?
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: He tried to William tell somebody?
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: Yeah, killed somebody, didn't he? Williams Burrows typing Burrows Apple,
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: Robin Hood.
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: It was Burrows, thanks, Phil killed her?
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: Right? Yes?
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: And also heavy heavy us the head? That where's the crown?
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: That was Henry the fourth? That was Shakespeare as well.
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: So you're just on a you're on a.
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: Tear today, damn man. And I got Burrows right? Tropical
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: answered tropical, apricorn Burrows?
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: How far was the shot on the William tell? Do
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: you think considering the technology is true? Yeah? Is that
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: story true? I feel Joanne vol think it's apocryphal.
- 1:31:25Speaker 7: According to Wikipedia, he killed her?
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: Yeah? Was it a bow or gun? He didn't get
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: in a hell of a out of trouble.
- 1:31:35Speaker 7: In nineteen fifty one burrows killed Volmer. It was a
- 1:31:40Speaker 7: drunken attempt at playing. William Tell doesn't say how far
- 1:31:43Speaker 7: it was.
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: You know when she was drunk too.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: When you missed, you away, missed miss low. How about
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: you never hear about the guy that misses high at
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: the top of the apple.
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: I actually know why. I always know why they missed low.
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: Tell me so when you when you're hunting, do you
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: come from the target down or do you go from
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: the target up?
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: Do you want to know the truth?
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: I come from the left, okay, I mean that works.
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: Like a shot arrow in my life. I don't. I
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: come from the left.
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: So which way is it? Your pins are? Are they
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: facing the right on your on your.
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: Shoot left handed?
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: Okay?
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: And I come in from the left. My pin comes
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: in from the left horizontal.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: So you follow the pin in so you can see
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: basically the.
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: Bow goes across the target like if I drew back
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: right now, and I'm gonna shoot randall right in the
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: of his nose right probably imaginary apple. Yeah, but I'm okay,
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: I'm gonna come the draw. Okay, Yeah, I'm shooting like
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: how it did when I was a kid. I'm gonna
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: come the draw and I'm gonna go pop right in
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: the head.
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: So you move you so you so you move to
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: the right because you're sight pin is on the left side,
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: so you if you're moving to the right, you can
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: see what you're coming into this sho Yeah.
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: Well I can't when I shoot just like instinctive with
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: no pins, I don't I don't remember what I did.
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: I've been shooting pin so long. That's how I do it.
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: I mean, I wouldn't change it. It's working.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: I don't know that. I wouldn't know. I don't works
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: like sometimes a lot of the time, not all the time.
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: A lot of a lot of archers, a lot of beginners.
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: For even people that are not beginners, they usually start
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: below the target and come up, which is not bad.
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: I mean, it's it's bad to do that, but that's
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: probably why they always hit low. They start low and
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: come up. I always start above the target, and then
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: I relax my legs to let the so you're more
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: at a relaxed state if you're if you're you got
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: to use muscles to lift it into place. But if
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: you're above it, you can relax to come down.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: Like what are you doing? Like when you're breathing. I
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: hold my breath. Actually, you know it's talking about your
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: Your form is so straight. You you kind of like
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: you like you adjust your mouth a little bit every time.
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: The left side of your mouth just just it's got
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: a quiver to it.
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: It's a little bit, just.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: Something you do. I was watching. It's like the same,
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: like you got it. You got your form. Your form
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: is like when you shoot, it's like how you shoot.
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: You don't like add, you'll add new little things.
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: And I spent eight hours a day when I first
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: started shooting, for basically ten or eleven years, just eight hours,
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: Like that was my life.
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: Differ blow a shot on a deer.
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: It's been a long time, I think in the last
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: twelve years, maybe two. And it wasn't because I blew
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: it completely.
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: I was.
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: It turned or it jumped, you know, and it just
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: was bad shot.
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: Like that Buck showed us he was he was like
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: I should probably get going.
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: Yeah, he knew was coming. But I led that one.
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: I was like, he is an open field and I knew.
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: I took the gamble because I was hoping he would
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: go forward versus duck it. But the gamble was good
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: on that one.
- 1:35:16Speaker 5: Do you have any dream hunts elk? I don't know
- 1:35:21Speaker 5: other other.
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: Critters, elk and grizzly bear. I want to shoot a
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: grizzly bear. And I want to be like on the
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: ground too. I don't want to be up in the
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: tree stand. I can hunt really good off the ground.
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: So with the short axle axle bows, I can just
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: I don't need a chair nothing. I can just sit
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: around the ground and and and I like that. I
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: like the adventures of that and mm hmmm. So someday,
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: someday I missed. I've had several people offer me grizzly
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: bear hunts in exchange for like some promotional things, but
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: it always fell over like some major tournament. So that's
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: that's one of the reasons why I like, I want
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: to retire from the competition side, because I want I
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: want to Eventually, these guys are going to stop saying, hey,
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: do you want to come hunt? You know, because it's
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: been like, you know, three or four years of me
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: saying sure and then oh wait, I got something that
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: I came up and I want to take advantage of that,
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: and I would load to elk hunt at some point too.
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: This is probably a stupid question, But I mean, when
- 1:36:18Speaker 4: you're hunting, what percentage of the time are you wearing
- 1:36:21Speaker 4: You're obviously when you're in a shot situation, you're not
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: wearing shoes like on a grizzly bear hunt or something
- 1:36:28Speaker 4: like that. Or you know, like when you're hiking in
- 1:36:31Speaker 4: are you hunting in bare feet a lot? Or are
- 1:36:33Speaker 4: you taking your shoes off before you shoot? Like what's
- 1:36:36Speaker 4: the what's the strategy there?
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: The joke that I always tell everybody is, especially if
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: you're hunting when it's cold out in the stand in Iowa,
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: it really takes a lot. It takes a good deal
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: for me to want to take off my socket shoes in.
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: Three degree wat you get like a boot you just
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: slip on when you to keep warm.
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I got like a quick, a quick boot. But
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: now but now I have they make toe socks, yeah,
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: and they actually have toe shoes.
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: So and I have the dex sterity that I can
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: still use those. Yeah.
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, well you know you should. It's good that
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: this is a good platform to bring up that you'd
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: like to go elk and grizzly hunting. Tell people how
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: to find you.
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: Okay, So where do I begin Uh. Facebook is kind
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: of like my main platform, so if you under the
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: armless Archer, you can always send me messages there. I
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: do have Instagram and Twitter that I'm working on building,
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: and I believe they are armist Archer, and then I
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: might have armless Matt as well on one of them's there.
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: I also think that someone should be able to make
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: you some gutton gloves, so and it'd be like you'd
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: prefer it to be like a thumbless minten.
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: Basically, yeah, as long as I have a dex sterity.
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: So if you if you on my big toe in the.
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: Pocket for your big toe coming off the side of that.
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: Sucker, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: I don't know if anybody and I don't know if
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: anybody listening deals in that kind of stuff.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: So when I when I got into the racing side
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: of things, ironically, one of the things that kept me
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: from going two hundred miles an hour was the fact
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: that I didn't have the proper foot gloves as far
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: as safety fireproof. So last year a company stand twenty
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: one made me full on custom like the highest fireproof
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: rated sock foot gloves on the market, and so now
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: I now this year, coming into this next year, I'll
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: be able to do two hundred miles an hour, I
- 1:38:38Speaker 2: legally without getting in trouble.
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: You got fire retired and footlow.
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: Fire retired and foot gloves, So I know there's a way.
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: I know there's a way to make these gloves work.
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: You know, for even even if there was a better
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: glove that I could wear for hunting, right like that
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: was warmer than a skinny shoe or something like that.
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: You know what you might try out, man, I think
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: it might be a good product for you to look into.
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: Is there's a company called Wiggis. Wiggis, Yeah, w I
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: G G y okay Wiggis, And he makes a he
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: makes like a overboot, a muckluck overboot that's like unbelievable.
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: It's meant to be that you can put it over
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: your height. You can put it over your boot. But
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: a lot of like stand sitters in super cold areas,
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: you can just go to your stand and your freaking
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: sneakers really put that thing on. But I have a
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: set of them, and the way they're lined and mega insulated,
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: you'd be able to just put if you had your
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: sock on or whatever the hell. And you understand, you
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: just be able to drop your foot in there and
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: just lift it right out of there, really, and you
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: couldn't possibly get cold.
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: So here here's a question for them then, because I
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: had you, can you just buy one right foot?
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: So is anyone of the ones that go in.
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: You know, I did have a deer get spooked one
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: time when I took off my sock and I was like,
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: I know, I washed my feet, but walking in if
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: you're sweating, you know, so like that's one of the
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: things I tried to not over Like it's okay to
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: have a little bit colder, you know, it's okay to
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: freeze it a little bit. Yeah, because walking in, if
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: you're sweating in your foot and you have to take
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: off your shoot to shoot, then you get a little
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: bit of that odor going.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: Dude, what I'll tell you what I would do, Man,
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: if I didn't have any arms, I'd take one of
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: those boots I'm talking about, and I'd hot glued at
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: some bitch to a little piece of plywood. So it's
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: sitting there, oh yeah, and I would just very gingerly
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: coming out of there because it's hot glued to a board,
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: hot glue to some bitch right to my stand you
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: you have to do it.
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: I would need like thirty thirty gloves stands everywhere. So
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: there is full of snow spots to me, thirty of.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: Them when I leave. When I leave, if I didn't
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: have any arms, I take a five gown bucket. Yeah,
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: and I set it right over that boot. The rain
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: and snow out.
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: He's thought this all through.
- 1:41:11Speaker 4: All your problems are solved.
- 1:41:17Speaker 10: So you need a bunch of boots and some five
- 1:41:18Speaker 10: gallon buckets. You need a bucket, You need a bucket
- 1:41:21Speaker 10: spunster that I mean, that would work, you know. I
- 1:41:27Speaker 10: think a lot of it though, is I play the wind.
- 1:41:30Speaker 10: I have to think about the foot thing quite a bit.
- 1:41:32Speaker 10: So I just play the wind.
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: And I like to be somewhat mobileish, you know.
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: So, so don't glue, don't.
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: Go your yeah done. I one time, on accident, I
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: stayed at a buddy's place and he had a log
- 1:41:47Speaker 2: fire to how heat his hunting cabin. And I remember
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: going out in the woods that night or that morning
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh, all my stuff, I forgot. Everything
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: smells like smoke, just reeks of like wood fire.
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I had.
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: That was like one of my most successful weeks. I've
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: ever had. I was sitting by a tree. It was
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: still dark out, and I had a dough just walk like,
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: you know, from here to the camera, just and I
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: smell my clothes and then walked off. I'm like, what
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: there is something to the smoke.
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: We're we'ren't wired to hunt territory now, But yeah, man,
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: like there's a lot there's a lot of opinion out
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: there about there's a lot of opinion out there about
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: how a lot of opinion about how ungulates regard the
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: smell of smoke, like how omnipresent it is. And then
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: also when you have smoke on you, is it covering
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: it or is it that there's the smell of smoke,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: which is there, but also there's the smell of you, right,
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: And it's just like it's not that one overrides the other.
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: It's just that there's two things happening.
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: You know, I mean like, oh, it's smoky, yeah, and
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: there's a dude, but yeah, I don't know, you know it.
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: It'd be great. I'd like to have a show if
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: I ever do another podcast, it's gonna be where I
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: interview game animals. Gotta have a big buck in okay,
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: and I'd be like, like during the rut, man, you're
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: kind of out. You're out a lot, you know, Yeah,
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: you're out walking around a lot during the rock Like,
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: are you nervous?
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: I've been run over by deer before. I've been run
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: over by a deer. Huh it was hit No, I was.
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: I was sitting on the ground. I was laid into
- 1:43:36Speaker 2: the stand and there was this brush pile. I was like,
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: I'm gonna sit by this brush pile on the ground
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: and I hear all this noise and the next thing
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: I know, like I'm just like on my face and
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: their dough was being chased by a buck and they
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: went right between where I was sitting and he just
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: ran ready to me just and I'm laying there and
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: he stops like he hit me, and he's standing over
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: the top of me, and I'm like yeah, and I
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: look up at him and like I can see his belly.
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: I'm like yeah, I'm just like laying there trying to
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: figure out what happened. And then he goes and took
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: off running and I'm like.
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: My old man got hit by a buck, and uh,
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: he got injured, but he got injured by his own
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: arrow when he got run over. He got run over
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: by a buck and cut it cut his hand pretty
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: good with his own arrow knocked. He had an arrow
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: knocked and somehow the arrow got like blown right off.
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: The broadhead came around and got him. That was the
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: only injury he got from getting hit by a buck.
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: Well, sure, I speak a lot about the broadheads.
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: You know, this is back and I don't know if
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: you remember, like this is back in the days when
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: you remember those.
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: Uh they're made out of rock, No, like those steel
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: like delta's.
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: Remember those green those green like kind of riveted delta
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: points and they you know, you had you take your
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: wooden arrow and bevele that wooden arrow down to a point.
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: And that delta point came with a cone. It was
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: like built on a cone and you'd get that hot
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: you know that that heat adhesive and put them on there.
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: It was back in those days.
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: I'm nodding like I remember.
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: You gotta appreciate how old I am, Like it's getting No, well,
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: here's the deal. I'm getting up there enough where I
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: now am I now have like recollections about stuff that
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: that people are like what I'm like, I'm telling you, man, yeah,
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm telling you, dude, that was like a thing, man,
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: you know, trying to call the cops and the like
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: couldn't find the phone.
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: Or have you seen the video of the kids. They
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: didn't know how to run one of those phones.
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: Oh no, yeah, they have no My kids would have
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: no idea. What do you see? They need to change
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: the icon. The phone icon still has like the phone
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: with the curly cord hooked to it. I remember like
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: deliberately thinking like I wonder if some day I remember
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: getting cell phone and being like I wonder someday you
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: could just get rid of a landline and having like
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: a revolutionary thought, you.
- 1:46:10Speaker 2: Know, I should have pattened it.
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: I should have. And then I remember a lot of
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: old bone arrow stuff.
- 1:46:14Speaker 5: Man.
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: I remember when flipper rest came out and that was
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: a big deal because everybody shot off the shelf things.
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: I remember.
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: I've lost ear to flipper rests actually not not working
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: properly or whatever.
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: Yeah, technology, you remember Ben Pearson Pierson Archery.
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: Uh No, I know, I know, I know, I know
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: of Pierson Archery, Yes, but I don't I never met him.
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: Oh no, I don't know. I don't know that I
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: know Ben Pearson. I got to meet uh when I
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: was a little kid. I got to meet I had.
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: I remember Fred Baar bought me dinner one time. Oh
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: that was a good joke. It was I ate, I
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: ate lunch on time on Fred Bear's dime.
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: Wow. When I was was he pretty cool? Was he
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: pretty cool?
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: Dude? Dude? I was so young. I was with Meloman,
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: who was my dad. Was very big into the like
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: early bow hunting, like fifties, like trying to get bow
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: seasons and all that. You know, he was really big
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: into archery in the fifties, like when he come home
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: from World War Two, he got an archery so he
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: was like very involved in that early stage archery stuff.
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: And I remember we were at a thing. Fred Bear
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: was there. I was with Meloman. Fred Baar paid for lunch.
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: I remember his dude name. There was a dude there.
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: I remember his first name was Babe, and he had
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: cowboy boots on and I remember him telling me the
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: best thing about these boots is I can kill cockroaches
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: that are in the corner. I rememver like like I
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: remember that. I remember those little details like it like
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: it was yesterday. Man.
- 1:47:48Speaker 7: Wow, you think that dude played baseball.
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: No, no, you know, I just remembered his last name.
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: My dad was Buddies when his last name was, his
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: name was Babe Johnson. And my old man had a thing.
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: He had a big sash, you know, you know, like
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: a girl scout sashes. This is the goofiest thing. He
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: belonged to this club where if you could kill something
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: with a bow, you'd get a patch like a merit badge. Yeah.
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: And he had everything on the planet like frogs, freaking owls, whatever,
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: you know, likewl and you'd like, so, I wish I
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: had that sash, and you'd get a patch and you'd
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: sew it on there, and it was just like it
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: was like because they were so big into being like
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: a bow. Can you know a bow can do anything?
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: A bowl can kill an owl? Oh my god, I
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: killed a frog with a boat. You know, I could
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: kill my neighbor with this boat. I felt like it
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: was just like all this kind of crazy nineteen fifties
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: archery shit. Man, that's amazing. Yeah. I mean I wasn't
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: born yet, but it was like I grew up in
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: the aftermath of all that.
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: The technology definitely has come along ways, though from wooden
- 1:48:56Speaker 2: wooden bows and wooden arrows and broadhead that you gotta
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: glue and make.
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: But uh, the mental game hasn't changed, all right, No,
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: mental there's still a lot of people. There's a lot
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: of people to panic.
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: A lot of people. I had a I don't really
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: want to call him out, but I have a buddy.
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: I have a buddy who's a muscle He's a he's
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: like a in a muscle building. So he's this big,
- 1:49:26Speaker 2: huge muscle guy and he loves the hunt. And I
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: was shooting turkeys with him.
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: I think a handful of me too.
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: So but when every time he would every time he
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: would shoot and if he would hit something, he would like,
- 1:49:42Speaker 2: mm hm you gotta gagging.
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: M you gag?
- 1:49:47Speaker 2: Yeah, Like I don't know. I think just from all
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: the adrenaline or something.
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: I got the body that pukes after he gets stuff.
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it just just gets all this.
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: I've seen it hyped out.
- 1:49:54Speaker 2: He gets so hyped up. It's it's kind of funny.
- 1:49:56Speaker 2: He always like, shut the camera off and I just
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: keep it going.
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: Yeah that's weird, man. Yeah, there's one buddy I got.
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: I've seen him do it. He'll get something then puke,
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: then he's fine.
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: Yeah, yep, just find right away afterwards. M I don't know,
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: maybe just the excitement and the adrenaline just goes nuts.
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: They don't know how to control it. Maybe maybe they
- 1:50:15Speaker 2: should shoot more target. I will say though, that hunting
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: has helped me be a better target archer. And target
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: archer has made me a better hunter as far as
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: not hunting, but as far as shot placement and just
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: being able to make the best decisions while I was
- 1:50:31Speaker 2: out in the woods.
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: I imagine the competitive learning how to deal with the competition. Yeah,
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: just learning how to deal with because you know, there's
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: a thing man like part of what you mess up
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: is that you want it so bad and you can't
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: deal with the emotion. Yeah, and you just shot and
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: there's so much pressure so many times that a little
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: pressure is not unusual to you. Yep.
- 1:50:50Speaker 2: And I get hungry still with an animal. It's you know,
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: you don't get lots of children. Usually it's like a
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: one and done. You know, you sit there all day
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: for one shot and you have you got to make
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: it count, right like you. For me, I've always I
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: always thought like shooting in under pressure has helped me
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: in that scenario to just I've actually missed Bucks because
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: I've took too long to do my process, not missed them,
- 1:51:14Speaker 2: they just went out of range. You missed the chance.
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: Yeah, well, man, thanks for coming on the show. Dude.
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: Hey, thanks for having me.
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: This just happened quick too, because someone sent to something
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: and I'm like, I told Chris said, man, let's get
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: that guy, or she said we should get this guy
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: or whatever, and here we are listen.
- 1:51:31Speaker 2: I I definitely appreciate it because first of all, I've
- 1:51:35Speaker 2: seen your episodes and then I, uh uh, my agent, Scott,
- 1:51:41Speaker 2: I think you were in top touch touch with them.
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: He he was telling me, like just everybody that you've
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: had on the podcast. I was like, this guy's this
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: guy is not just a hunter and all this other stuff.
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: He's like really good at podcasting, Like he's like a
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: legitimate good No. I mean, he just it's an honor
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: that you wanted me to be a part of it,
- 1:52:03Speaker 2: and I thought it was like this perfect way to
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: to just kind of launch my hunting. Yeah, on social
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: media and the next step of where MAT's going. And
- 1:52:16Speaker 2: not that I was using you for.
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: That, but you can use wherever you want, Matt.
- 1:52:20Speaker 2: I definitely appreciate it. You guys having me on here
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: for just it's been awesome.

- 1:52:42Speaker 1: is that ever retired? No, I don't know.
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: I don't know, because I think I'm just retiring from
- 1:52:47Speaker 2: the competition side. That's it. I'm still gonna shoot my
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: bows now. Now I'm gonna, you know, get to walk
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: around and enjoy adventures in the woods and mountains and back.
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: When I opened my window this morning, I looked up
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: and saw the mountain, and then I was like, I probably
- 1:53:00Speaker 2: should have stayed a couple of days and spent a
