- 0:27Speaker 1: A couple of weeks ago, we got the the odds
- 0:31Speaker 1: from a bet online for the Saints coaching search, and
- 0:36Speaker 1: several weeks back, Joe Brady was the odds on favorite
- 0:40Speaker 1: to be the Saints head coach. And then on Monday
- 0:44Speaker 1: of this week we got updated odds and Aaron Glenn,
- 0:48Speaker 1: the Lions defensive coordinator, had overtaken Brady as the betting favorite.
- 0:55Speaker 1: And that may still be how this all plays out.
- 0:58Speaker 1: They're still the Saints are still going to go through
- 1:00Speaker 1: the interview process, and all that is very structured by
- 1:02Speaker 1: the NFL based on when interviews can take place and
- 1:05Speaker 1: when teams are still playing, et cetera. And then there's
- 1:08Speaker 1: the Mike McCarthy angle, which he's now very much in
- 1:11Speaker 1: the mix, and for whatever it's worth, a bet online
- 1:14Speaker 1: has Mike McCarthy with the seventh best odds to be
- 1:16Speaker 1: the Saints coach, although it feels like that might be
- 1:19Speaker 1: a little low, especially when you consider something like this.
- 1:22Speaker 1: So there's a report today from the New York Post
- 1:31Speaker 1: that is suggesting that the Jets may actually have the
- 1:36Speaker 1: inside track in pursuing Aaron Glenn to be their their
- 1:40Speaker 1: new head coach. This report is from Brian Costello of
- 1:48Speaker 1: the New York Post, who in this week says that
- 1:53Speaker 1: Aaron Glenn has told people near him that the Jets
- 1:59Speaker 1: would be his first choice if he's offered the job. Now,
- 2:05Speaker 1: there's a couple of things in there that need to happen.
- 2:07Speaker 1: First of all, the Jets have to want Aaron Glenn
- 2:10Speaker 1: to be there their first choice. It's not to say
- 2:12Speaker 1: that that is the case. Of course, they fired Robert Sala,
- 2:14Speaker 1: who was a defensive coordinator that they promoted the head
- 2:17Speaker 1: coach got from the Niners to be their head coach,
- 2:19Speaker 1: and maybe they look to go a different direction. Maybe
- 2:21Speaker 1: it's an offensive minded coach. What happens with Aaron Rodgers.
- 2:23Speaker 1: A lot still to be determined, but the poster is
- 2:26Speaker 1: reporting that Aaron Glenn's preference would be the Jets, So
- 2:32Speaker 1: that from the Saints' perspective would be disappointing because internally,
- 2:36Speaker 1: if the New Orleans Saints favor Aaron Glenn, which it
- 2:40Speaker 1: kind of sounds like and seemed kind of feels like
- 2:43Speaker 1: that's the case and probably has been the case for
- 2:45Speaker 1: some time. Mickey Loomis has talked about hiring someone that
- 2:49Speaker 1: he knows or is familiar with. We know Aaron Glenn
- 2:52Speaker 1: was in New Orleans as the secondary's coach before going
- 2:55Speaker 1: with Dan Campbell to be the DC there in Detroit. Well,
- 2:58Speaker 1: on Wednesday, Aaron and Glenn met with reporters up in
- 3:01Speaker 1: Detroit here in advance of the divisional round game. Of course,
- 3:04Speaker 1: they're hosting Jayden Daniels and the Commanders, and he was
- 3:11Speaker 1: asked about why his time in Detroit has prepared him
- 3:18Speaker 1: now to be a head coach.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Well, you know what, I'm gonna go back to twenty
- 3:22Speaker 2: one and going into this year, because we started, as
- 3:26Speaker 2: we all know, three thirteen and one, and then the
- 3:29Speaker 2: following year we go one and six. But the thing
- 3:31Speaker 2: that I can remember that sticks to me is our
- 3:35Speaker 2: head coach, our coordinators, our coaches. We never wavered from
- 3:39Speaker 2: the things that we believed in. I think that's a
- 3:41Speaker 2: strong statement when you stand in front of a group
- 3:43Speaker 2: of men say this is how you have to win,
- 3:45Speaker 2: and we believe that you win this way, and those
- 3:47Speaker 2: guys believed that too. And then once our owner had
- 3:51Speaker 2: an interview and she backed everybody, all the coaches, that
- 3:55Speaker 2: we have a formula to win and it's disclosed. And
- 3:58Speaker 2: from then on, I think we went eight and two
- 4:00Speaker 2: into now. So here's what it taught me. We know
- 4:03Speaker 2: as a staff how to build a winner, and now
- 4:06Speaker 2: we know how as a staff how to sustain winning.
- 4:08Speaker 2: So we want to continue to do that, you know,
- 4:10Speaker 2: as long as we're all here. So the answer your question,
- 4:13Speaker 2: building it from the beginning and sustaining it from here
- 4:16Speaker 2: on out.
- 4:17Speaker 1: One more also from Aaron Glenn. He was talked about
- 4:21Speaker 1: having gone through the interview process before and if he
- 4:24Speaker 1: feels like he's more prepared now for this round of
- 4:29Speaker 1: interviews considering he's he's done this in past cycles.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I think you learn a number of things from each
- 4:35Speaker 2: year that you go through them, and you try to
- 4:38Speaker 2: improve on those each year. But I think the one
- 4:40Speaker 2: thing that I get out of all these interviews is, Man,
- 4:43Speaker 2: I'm going to be myself. You need you like it
- 4:45Speaker 2: or you don't. If you don't, all good. I keep
- 4:48Speaker 2: telling you that I have a great job here and
- 4:50Speaker 2: if you like it, if it's an opportunity, I think
- 4:52Speaker 2: that's best for me and my family, then we'll take
- 4:54Speaker 2: a look at it. But had a really good time,
- 4:57Speaker 2: you know, the over the bye week looking at those
- 4:59Speaker 2: But now we were all locked in, ready to go
- 5:01Speaker 2: and play this game against Washington. Yeah.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I think one of the things that as the Saints
- 5:05Speaker 1: are looking to hire their coach, all you can ever
- 5:09Speaker 1: do is just make your pitch and put the best
- 5:12Speaker 1: foot forward. I remember, it's interesting how all this kind
- 5:16Speaker 1: of dovetails. I'm reminded of when the Saints hired Sean Payton,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and Sean wrote about this in his book. But you know, coincidentally,
- 5:25Speaker 1: Sean Payton and Mike McCarthy were interviewing for the Green
- 5:28Speaker 1: Bay job in two thousand and six, and Peyton was
- 5:31Speaker 1: the OC with the Cowboys and McCarthy was with the
- 5:35Speaker 1: forty nine ers. He'd spent four years with the Saints
- 5:38Speaker 1: from two thousand and two thousand and four, it spent
- 5:39Speaker 1: one year with the Niners and then went to then
- 5:44Speaker 1: took the Green Bay job. Well, Sean Payton wanted the
- 5:46Speaker 1: Packers job badly and was upset when he didn't get it,
- 5:50Speaker 1: and ultimately ended up taking the New Orleans job. And
- 5:53Speaker 1: we all know what would happened. They would both go
- 5:55Speaker 1: on to win Super Bowls, et cetera. But we look
- 5:59Speaker 1: at it so many times the the organization's perspective, but
- 6:04Speaker 1: it also matters for the candidates. So like Aaron Glenn
- 6:07Speaker 1: may prefer the Jets, and it makes sense. The Jets
- 6:13Speaker 1: are historically not a great organization, as we well understand,
- 6:17Speaker 1: but you're in New York if you covered that media market,
- 6:22Speaker 1: the Jets do have a younger and more talented roster
- 6:26Speaker 1: than the Saints. And the Jets have seventeen million dollars
- 6:29Speaker 1: in cap space. They're twenty fourth in the league for
- 6:31Speaker 1: twenty twenty five with seventeen million in cap space. That's
- 6:35Speaker 1: not a lot. It's in the bottom third of the league.
- 6:38Speaker 1: But the Saints are dead last, and you're gonna have
- 6:40Speaker 1: to do the cap gymnastics again just to get within
- 6:42Speaker 1: cap compliance. And the Saints are looking at a multi
- 6:46Speaker 1: year rebuild, so maybe And the reason I wanted you
- 6:50Speaker 1: to hear what Aaron Glenn said about the time in
- 6:52Speaker 1: Detroit when they had a really rough first season and
- 6:55Speaker 1: they started I say it was two and eight, I believe,
- 6:57Speaker 1: or they fit. Maybe they started one to six and
- 6:58Speaker 1: finished eight and to the rest of the way. And
- 7:04Speaker 1: he went through that in Detroit. It might be something
- 7:06Speaker 1: similar in New Orleans. Is Aaron Rodgers back in New
- 7:10Speaker 1: York again? Don't know, but that'll be the really interesting
- 7:14Speaker 1: thing from the Saints perspective is who do they identify
- 7:17Speaker 1: as their top guy and can they get him? Because
- 7:20Speaker 1: if it is Aaron Glenn and Glenn wants the Jets
- 7:23Speaker 1: job and the Jets offer it to Glenn, then you're
- 7:25Speaker 1: moving down the list and Mike McCarthy may well be
- 7:29Speaker 1: the guy now. McCarthy, as we've learned, has interest from
- 7:31Speaker 1: both the cub excuse me, the Bears, the other Chicago team,
- 7:35Speaker 1: the Bulls are interested in Mike McCarthy. By the way,
- 7:38Speaker 1: he'll an interview with the Blackhawks and the Bulls. Anyway,
- 7:41Speaker 1: McCarthy is gonna interview with the Bear. Yeah, I got
- 7:44Speaker 1: it right. The Bears the Bears and then the Saints.
- 7:48Speaker 1: I confuse myself and if McCarthy lands in New Orleans.
- 7:57Speaker 1: To be quite honest, you know, my feeling initially whenever
- 8:00Speaker 1: we started talking about this was not very good. And
- 8:05Speaker 1: uh huh, I don't know. Maybe I'm a little bit
- 8:08Speaker 1: of a of a of a prisoner of the moment
- 8:11Speaker 1: and maybe a victim a little bit of a bit
- 8:13Speaker 1: here of groupthink, of like the Internet group think, where
- 8:16Speaker 1: everybody's kind of dog piled on McCarthy. And it's odd
- 8:19Speaker 1: because when he was in Dallas, I kind of defended
- 8:23Speaker 1: Mike McCarthy. I mean, over the three years prior to
- 8:25Speaker 1: this one, when Dak and everybody got hurt. I mean,
- 8:28Speaker 1: it's kind of amazing. They still won seven games. The
- 8:30Speaker 1: backup quarterback that is the Cooper Rush experience, right muse?
- 8:33Speaker 1: I mean Cooper Rush, our guy, Cooper Rush went led
- 8:36Speaker 1: the Cowboys to a seven win season. You know who's
- 8:40Speaker 1: not surprised? I do you want to call it that?
- 8:41Speaker 1: This guy right here is not Coop did work. But
- 8:55Speaker 1: there is a lot so Ross Jackson wrote a piece
- 8:57Speaker 1: at Louisiana sports dot Net. It's free if you want
- 8:59Speaker 1: to go, and everything always for you Louisiana Sports on
- 9:01Speaker 1: net and Ross did a really deep dive into why
- 9:05Speaker 1: Mike McCarthy is the new front runner for the same shop,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and there, of course is the tide of the organization.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I mean, Mickey Loomis has been here since two thousand
- 9:14Speaker 1: and has been the GM since two and that's when
- 9:17Speaker 1: McCarthy was the OC from two thousand and oh four,
- 9:20Speaker 1: So there's a knowledge there. But you know, McCarthy spent
- 9:25Speaker 1: thirteen years with the Packers, won a Super Bowl it
- 9:28Speaker 1: went to Dallas, has a six to oh eight career
- 9:31Speaker 1: winning percentage. It's a that's top forty all time. He's
- 9:39Speaker 1: eleven and eleven in the postseason, which means he's made
- 9:41Speaker 1: the playoffs eleven times. As we mentioned, he's won a
- 9:44Speaker 1: Super Bowl eighteen seasons as a head coach, eleven double
- 9:49Speaker 1: digit win seasons, and he's built up two organizations there
- 9:54Speaker 1: in Green Bay. He took over Green Bay when they
- 9:57Speaker 1: were a four win team, and you know what would
- 10:00Speaker 1: happened there and then while you know, they went twelve
- 10:06Speaker 1: and five in three consecutive seasons in Dallas, the playoff
- 10:11Speaker 1: shortcomings are what everybody remembers. Maybe the same thing in
- 10:14Speaker 1: Green Bay there with Aaron Rodgers and just getting over
- 10:17Speaker 1: the hump and winning the one Super Bowl. But it
- 10:19Speaker 1: does sound a lot, a lot like what Sean Payton
- 10:23Speaker 1: and Drew Brees did in New Orleans. You know, I
- 10:27Speaker 1: guess I look at it and I say, if you're
- 10:28Speaker 1: looking for someone that maybe maybe it's the same. Maybe
- 10:33Speaker 1: it's the same test that I'm applying here that I
- 10:37Speaker 1: would have applied to Bill Belichick. Belichick AT's seventy two
- 10:41Speaker 1: years old or seventy three. If you go somewhere, you're
- 10:44Speaker 1: not hiring someone for a decade. But what if you
- 10:46Speaker 1: had him for three years and he made you better
- 10:49Speaker 1: and got you to the playoffs, and then whoever was
- 10:51Speaker 1: next was inheriting a better situation. Maybe that's the situation
- 10:55Speaker 1: with McCarthy similarly, And maybe I'm just trying to convince
- 10:59Speaker 1: my why this isn't a terrible idea, because I'm I'm
- 11:02Speaker 1: kind of starting to resolve myself to the fact that
- 11:05Speaker 1: this might actually happen. Because Glen Glenn, I think, will
- 11:08Speaker 1: have other options and it sounds like he might pick
- 11:11Speaker 1: somewhere other than New Orleans. And if that's the case,
- 11:13Speaker 1: is Mike McCarthy the front runner, and if he is,
- 11:16Speaker 1: why might this make sense? Well, strong background developing quarterbacks,
- 11:20Speaker 1: certainly has been a play caller, He's hired play callers
- 11:22Speaker 1: on his staff as well, and he's won a lot
- 11:25Speaker 1: at his two stops as a head coach. And if
- 11:27Speaker 1: nothing else, maybe can sort of pull New Orleans out
- 11:30Speaker 1: of this tailspin there in and get it back to
- 11:31Speaker 1: a stable footing before whoever might be next comes in,
- 11:34Speaker 1: whenever that may be so. Aaron Glenn sounds like he's
- 11:39Speaker 1: got other options in New Orleans. Mike McCarthy might be
- 11:42Speaker 1: emerging as the guy. If you're interested in reading more,
