Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Cubs win but PCA Concerns? Ben Fawkes on NFL QBs & the Voice of the Chiefs Mitch Holthus
Transcript
- 0:00Your afternoon here with us, Trent Condon, Ken Miller talking
- 0:02sports with you until 2:00. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:07program. Couple of days ago we mentioned
- 0:09a piece by Ben Fox who covers the NFL, sports betting etcetera
- 0:15for yahoosports.com where he came out with the the downgrade,
- 0:20if you will, from the starter to the backup quarterback when it
- 0:23comes to a the point spread, etcetera.
- 0:26And who ranks higher and #1 on the list is Josh Allen of the
- 0:29Bills. So if the example I used the
- 0:33other day of Josh Allen and was going to play in the Bills and
- 0:35they're playing say Cleveland, they were a 10 point favorite.
- 0:39Josh Allen's not going to start with that number drops by just
- 0:42under 7 points. So that shows you the difference
- 0:45in the quarterbacks when it comes to the starter in the
- 0:47back. But we'll talk about that, but
- 0:48I'm going to talk about Q bees and what he's hearing about that
- 0:51one to the north of us in particular as.
- 0:55Roccobec. No, not that one Way up, way,
- 0:57way up. The pro team, the.
- 0:59Oh, and the pro team. Not, not the starting
- 1:00quarterback for the Osage Green Devils.
- 1:01No further. Keep going, Keep going past
- 1:04Rochester, all right? And get to the Twin Cities and
- 1:07there you go, and you'll find Jason.
- 1:08The young Gopher quarterback. The young with the third.
- 1:10Bosmer. Yeah.
- 1:11Bosmer. Bosmer, who apparently looking
- 1:15pretty good. But anyways, JJ McCarthy's we'll
- 1:17talk a lot of quarterbacks with Ben Fox.
- 1:20I got some Caleb Williams questions.
- 1:21Absolutely, as you should. I think you know what, I think
- 1:23he's had a pretty good week, bounce back, a bounce back week,
- 1:27kind of hit and miss early. But look, he he was behind the 8
- 1:31ball last year and it was I think a lot to do with coaching
- 1:34staff, you know, as much as anything.
- 1:36Our conversation yesterday with David Kaplan, as always, you can
- 1:38always catch up on the show if you miss anything on the podcast
- 1:41side of things. They're talking to Kapi and when
- 1:43he brought up Ben Johnson in just the red ass that he is,
- 1:46that that got me fired up. And I'd seen that a little bit,
- 1:49but just having that, they have an adult in the room.
- 1:52They do. And you look back at this regime
- 1:55and you look back at these coaches that they have had, it's
- 1:58either or never happened. Lovey was completely fine.
- 2:01Lovey was a good coach. Trustman.
- 2:06A disaster, felt coach he held a CFL coach, Matt Nagy, Yeah, had
- 2:12one great year, right and. Not meant to be.
- 2:15Not cut out to be a head coach. No, not at all.
- 2:17He's excellent at that. And Chiefs fans.
- 2:20Yep, you're glad you got him. Glad you got him.
- 2:22Hope he is not taking over. And the neighbor flews.
- 2:25Yeah, John Fox was out. Dick Geron.
- 2:29It's it's been a comedy of errors for a long time.
- 2:31Yeah, at that spot. Now, this is no guarantee that
- 2:34this is right, but it certainly feels better than it has.
- 2:37Feels different, right? They went out and got somebody,
- 2:40yes, that everybody wanted. I agree with.
- 2:42You and that wasn't the case with any of these.
- 2:43Guys, he could pick and choose where he was going to be a head
- 2:45coach for the first time and had that opportunity two years ago
- 2:49and decided it wasn't the right scenario when he's waiting for
- 2:51the right one and it was Chicago and there he is.
- 2:54And we'll talk to Ben Fox. A lot of quarterbacks coming up
- 2:56here. At about 12:25.
- 2:59Mitch Holtis the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs daily
- 3:02training camp reports sponsored by Papa John's throughout the
- 3:05state of Iowa. Look forward to talking to Mitch
- 3:08as we do every day to 12:45. Now.
- 3:10Tomorrow it'll be on tape. He'll send a two or three minute
- 3:13recorded piece as the team heads to their pre season affair.
- 3:18So we'll talk to Mitch today live, but tomorrow on tape, hour
- 3:21number two, Ray Cole's going to come in studio.
- 3:25Looking forward to catching up with Ray Cole, dude.
- 3:27Seemingly once a year, the changing landscape of
- 3:30television. And I thought it was pretty
- 3:32timely to get a hold of Ray this week because obviously the
- 3:35ESPNNFL acquisition, NFL Network and ESPN take are giving up a
- 3:42share of their company to the NFL.
- 3:45What does that mean? Ray is former vice president of
- 3:48ABC nationally and ran the shop over at WOI for many years.
- 3:53So Ray Cole pretty in touch with the with the television business
- 3:56and remains so to this day. He'll be here with Trent tonight
- 3:59to kick off the one O clock hour.
- 4:01And then we're going to talk Iowa State.
- 4:02And man, it's been tough to talk Iowa State.
- 4:04At least find somebody to talk about Iowa State this week.
- 4:08But we're going to get our locked on Cyclones guy in here.
- 4:12Marv on air. Nick Marovitz.
- 4:15Nick Marovitz will join us and we'll talk about the Cyclones, I
- 4:20think. Do they have a press
- 4:21availability this morning? Football.
- 4:22I think they've got a couple of assistant football coaches.
- 4:25Didn't Bill Steele say Clanton was one of them?
- 4:28That sounds. Correct, I think it does, yeah.
- 4:30So we'll tick. We'll talk to Nick coming up
- 4:33here at about two O 130. Trent will make some plays of
- 4:36the day. I hope, like if I hope, we got
- 4:37some football plays. I have one you do you know the?
- 4:39One. Yeah, I do.
- 4:40You know the one. Are you kind?
- 4:42Of tapping the brakes a little bit, knowing that the no no no
- 4:44Colts are going to play. The price is too good.
- 4:47Yeah, you got a lot. The price is too good and the
- 4:49Ravens team that has been so good.
- 4:50Historically dominated Dominant. It's plus 250 now today at
- 4:54Circa. Is it really John Harbour looks
- 4:56at the at the preseason differently than most of the
- 4:58coaches in the league. He believes in it and is going
- 5:01to try and win these games. So if you're getting a whole
- 5:05handful of points and you are, that could be a good play.
- 5:08Anyways, let's recap the baseball from yesterday before
- 5:11we kind of move on, if you will. I want to start with, I know
- 5:14it's not a team that moves the needles, but I but I want to do
- 5:17more. So focus on Colorado.
- 5:19Just how embarrassing the Rockies are, Trent?
- 5:21Yet they're still ahead of the pace of last year's White Sox.
- 5:24Are they really? They are.
- 5:25It's my percentage points. But yeah, I saw that the night
- 5:27before. Holy mackerels they must have
- 5:29been, but I know they were. They were historically bad, but
- 5:32I mean, I don't think the White Sox gave up 63 hits and 45 runs
- 5:39in a three-game series at any point last year.
- 5:42I don't think so either. Trent, it's honest to God.
- 5:44It's like they were playing a high school team.
- 5:46I got bored watching it. Oh, I bet I really did.
- 5:48Yeah. It was like, this is no fun.
- 5:50One ball after another, leaving the leaving or clearing the
- 5:53fences at Coors Field. It was just boring.
- 5:57They're so damn bad. Beau Bichette in his three-game
- 6:03series. You know, I'm going to find the
- 6:05exact numbers, OK, Somebody sent them to me.
- 6:07All right, Bob Bouchette, his three games at Coors Field,
- 6:11three home runs and nine RBI in the last two years.
- 6:15Chris Bryant, two home runs, eight RBI.
- 6:18Oh, no. At Coors Field.
- 6:20Oh, no. What a bust Chris Bryant has
- 6:24been to that franchise. I don't know if he's said in the
- 6:26back. I mean, obviously is to some in
- 6:29some respects, but it's just if you're they're not even trying
- 6:33Trent. And I know nobody cares but it
- 6:35just bothers me when I see just the mail it in.
- 6:42But isn't this the way that makes more sense than playing
- 6:46around the edges, bringing in a couple low level veterans to go
- 6:5175 and whatever the math is at? Least you're going to give the
- 6:55the the home crowd and they still show up there, which is
- 6:57remarkable. Something to cheer about every
- 7:00now and. Then, so they're training though
- 7:02for three consecutive 100 lost seasons.
- 7:06This is not just tearing it down.
- 7:08This is. This is the we don't care.
- 7:10Made the playoffs last in 2018, went back-to-back years 2017 and
- 7:142018. So they've been there.
- 7:18Missed it in the shortened season but then since then it
- 7:20is. Was Todd Hilton still there in
- 7:2317 and 18? Let's.
- 7:24See 2018 season. Who was part of this squad?
- 7:30Major League debuts. Drew Bioterra was on the team.
- 7:33That's a Noel, Noel and Aronado. La Major McMahon, Trevor Story.
- 7:38Pretty good infield, not bad. Charlie Blackman in the
- 7:40outfield. He's just retired this year.
- 7:42Matt Holiday SO. They had some dudes, yeah.
- 7:45Absolutely. Let's see, pitching staff.
- 7:47Well, there's probably not going to be a whole lot of names that
- 7:49excite you. John Gray, Cal Freeland, who
- 7:51started last night for them, he was there.
- 7:54Herman Marquez, he had a couple of decent years, as decent as
- 7:58you can do in that altitude. Bullpen looked pretty solid,
- 8:01went to the playoffs, what a series.
- 8:03Lost the other and since then they have lost 9187941O3101
- 8:09games and now this year 115. Yeah, it's somewhere around that
- 8:13number. It's just, it's bad.
- 8:15It's no fun. As I said yesterday, how'd you
- 8:17like show up to call those games?
- 8:18I know he's a Anyways, enough about Colorado.
- 8:22The goal is to keep an audience. And I don't think we are at this
- 8:24point talking about the Rockies and the Blue Jays.
- 8:26So let's get to the Cubs. And boy, did they need that one
- 8:29yesterday in the worst way. And Kate Horton was terrific
- 8:32again there. There's look at I don't want to,
- 8:36I don't want to get way ahead of myself, but it looks like they
- 8:38have something there. Doesn't seem like that to you.
- 8:41Absolutely. You can see a lot of times with
- 8:43these guys and, and there were those initial struggles, but we
- 8:47talked about the numbers is ERA over his last seven starts is
- 8:49like 1. You don't do that over 7 starts.
- 8:52I don't care who the competition was.
- 8:54You just don't do that. And the competition overall,
- 8:57yeah, it's not elite level still.
- 8:59He's not giving up. He's giving up one game where
- 9:01he's giving up an earned run in those last six starts.
- 9:05It's unthinkable. And who have they been against?
- 9:07Is there been a playoff team in the mix?
- 9:10The Red Sox. Yeah, Cleveland was the first
- 9:12one on the fringes. Minnesota.
- 9:14So when Cleveland, Minnesota. Boston White Sox, Baltimore.
- 9:17Cincinnati. There's still major leaguers,
- 9:19Yes, and they used to. Colorado is not on that list.
- 9:22That helps it a lot. So do you know offhand, do you
- 9:25have his numbers? Oh, I got it right here.
- 9:27He's at 79 and a third innings pitched down the season.
- 9:30That's all I would have thought he'd been That's.
- 9:33What I thought too. I had the exact same thought.
- 9:36I thought it was going to be pushing towards 100 when I first
- 9:40had that slot. I've done a.
- 9:42Pretty good job. Well, it sounds as though the
- 9:44plan is maybe without revealing the plan, but if you if you kind
- 9:47of look at the body of work that he's not going to go past 6 even
- 9:51if he's dealing and he was dealing yesterday.
- 9:53Oh absolutely that that that's going to be the Max for him.
- 9:56So while they may not be willing to shut him down or push back
- 10:00starts, they're going to make certain that those you know,
- 10:03that that he's not out there. They're not running back out
- 10:06there in the 8th inning or in the 9th inning to try and get
- 10:09that complete game. Those will come, but not this
- 10:11year. Stakes are too important.
- 10:12You're going to need him. He's clearly #3 in the rotation
- 10:16once this team gets to the playoffs.
- 10:17Imanaga, Boyd and and then Kate Horton.
- 10:20It was more than that. It was Suzuki clearing the fence
- 10:22for the first time. Do you have another hit?
- 10:24Well, I forgot, got to add in the innings that he pitched down
- 10:28here. Well, how long was he here?
- 10:3029 extra innings OK well, so now we're.
- 10:32A difference, right? About 100.
- 10:33Yeah, we're over 100 now. We're pushing it up to 110.
- 10:37I mean, there's 15160. Is that a realistic target?
- 10:41So last year overall, let's see what his combined I need to
- 10:45throw hardly at all 34 and a third 20/23/88 was a high that
- 10:50he had there. I mean, even going back to
- 10:52college and you're not going to get a whole lot there.
- 10:53So I'd I'd be concerned. 15160. That's probably the top that
- 11:01you'd feel comfortable, especially just the way he
- 11:03throws. Man, he was pinpoint yesterday.
- 11:06He was really good. Strikeouts.
- 11:07What do you have? 6 Didn't walk anybody.
- 11:10Well done. Kate Horton say Suzuki needed
- 11:12that in the worst way. Needed it in the worst way.
- 11:14Good to see Hap starting to hit the ball a little bit again.
- 11:17Swansons been good. Matt Shaw has been good.
- 11:21You know what else I thought was real positive after getting
- 11:24booed off the field on Tuesday night?
- 11:27Kittridge came in and he was awful.
- 11:29I mean, he blew the game. Imanaga went, went, went out and
- 11:33he was really good. And or was it Boyd?
- 11:35Whoever pitched, was it Imanaga? It was it Imanaga?
- 11:37Show him Inaga On Tuesday night. He got the first out of the
- 11:41inning and they left with the lead and then Kittridge got one
- 11:45out and it was a SAC fly and it was right to the warning track,
- 11:48but he got booed off the field. So they put him right out, right
- 11:51back onto the field yesterday, right.
- 11:53And that was the right thing to do.
- 11:54Well, well done, Craig Counsel had an Immaculate inning, 9
- 11:57pitches, 9 strikes, Bing bang, boom, back into the dugout got.
- 12:01Helped by that first pitch. Well, he.
- 12:03Did. But we see that through
- 12:05baseball. That's 4 inches inside.
- 12:08But it was. Yeah, right.
- 12:09But when it left his hand, it looked like it was gonna be a
- 12:11strike. It's true.
- 12:14But man, he needed that in the worst way.
- 12:15But yet, to your point, it was inside.
- 12:17I agree with you, but the umpire saw it differently.
- 12:20Oh. Now you're an umpire fan in
- 12:22that. Case I was in that case I was.
- 12:24But just you're right, it was, it was a ball.
- 12:26It was a ball, no doubt about it.
- 12:27And if the replay would have been in effect at that time, I'm
- 12:30guessing the whoever was in the batter's box would have actually
- 12:33touched his helmet. I got one more on the Cubs.
- 12:36OK, Are you ready to have a conversation on Pete Crow
- 12:39Armstrong as far. As what?
- 12:40Shutting him down or moving him down in the lineup?
- 12:42Well. He's.
- 12:43Hitting too high in the lineup For starters, you shouldn't be
- 12:46hitting clean up or what was the 6th yesterday.
- 12:49Yeah, I think they that's he's. Struggling right now he's.
- 12:51Awful. Yeah.
- 12:53And there he had that stretch during May and June and
- 12:56basically July. Could he get him out?
- 12:58He was so. Good, you know, and I remember
- 13:01when it first started to turn and I brought up the holes in
- 13:03his swing. You look at the swing and miss
- 13:05percentages, you look at the lot of those underlying stats and
- 13:08they point to a guy that's not going to be able to sustain
- 13:10this, that it's it's impossible for a guy like this.
- 13:14And no, this has nothing to do with he bothers me personally
- 13:17that that's not what you started to come.
- 13:18Around a little bit. Well, no.
- 13:19He's, he's always going to bother me, right?
- 13:21But. You didn't bother you as much?
- 13:22No, 'cause he. He was he was entertaining to
- 13:25watch. I've watched him run down balls
- 13:27in center field. Like watch that all night long.
- 13:29He. Though has those holes in the
- 13:31swing and what we're seeing now, I think it's gone completely the
- 13:36other way. He's lost.
- 13:37It's somewhere in the middle. But.
- 13:39Because of that basically three months stretch that we saw from
- 13:42PCA, are the expectations now going to be so out of whack that
- 13:48if he has a solid season next year in today's day and age, he
- 13:52hits 235, he steals 40 bases, he hits 23 home runs.
- 13:58And people say what's wrong with PCA?
- 13:59Yeah, you're. Wondering.
- 14:02I think the expectation maybe has grown unless something
- 14:05changes in that way. Add into the fact that he was
- 14:07the starting center fielder for the National.
- 14:09There's another thing, right It it reminded me of the
- 14:12conversation I had Monday with Matt Snyder on Julio Rodriguez.
- 14:15Mm. Hmm.
- 14:16Because I, in my view, see, Julio Rodriguez is a huge
- 14:21disappointment. Yeah.
- 14:22And he's not, because he was. So good when he came into the
- 14:24league. PCA is different because we
- 14:26watch him game in a game out right still.
- 14:28Right, that's fair. I I.
- 14:29Think on that national scope, Is that something that we're going
- 14:32to hear? Because I don't watch every
- 14:33Mariners game that is mine where people say what happened to PCA.
- 14:37This guy was starting basically as a rookie in the All Star
- 14:40game, and now he's a nice he should have.
- 14:41Taken that contract when they offered it to.
- 14:43Him and that could be a different one, too.
- 14:45And you know, going to be a big offseason on that conversation.
- 14:47So I just something I wanted to catch.
- 14:49Shaw's next. For that, I think yeah, I think
- 14:51Shaw's going to have an opportunity to sign 1.
- 14:53You turned me on to a show yesterday.
- 14:55We we started to watch talk a little bit about Hard Knocks.
- 14:59So I finished up the last 20 minutes of Hard Knocks
- 15:01yesterday. Episode 2 better be really good
- 15:07because I think it's on the cusp of.
- 15:11I was kind of in a way, not enthralled, but I enjoyed the
- 15:17piece on the new stadium. Oh yeah.
- 15:19And and how the? Scientists have come in and and
- 15:24made it so the wind will not be a factor in Buffalo.
- 15:27We know it can get windy. And that was kind of cool and
- 15:29seeing, you know what it's going to look like and here's your
- 15:32locker room and this is going to be.
- 15:33So that was OK. But man, it leaves you wanting
- 15:37more, didn't it? It really did.
- 15:39I don't know who they're going to.
- 15:41Epinesis snake. I saw the snake that you
- 15:43referred to. Yeah, all right, it was.
- 15:46OK, and obviously Josh Allen is going to be the star of the show
- 15:51and we'll see where it we'll see how they develop it.
- 15:54But man, I I hate to say it because I love it.
- 15:59You're wondering if it's past its time because it was so good.
- 16:03I mean, the Ravens 1 was out of this world, right?
- 16:07With Sarah Goosa and Ray Lewis and Shannon Sharp and going back
- 16:12in the day. That was so good.
- 16:14I mean, that kind of set the bar.
- 16:16And there been another good one since then.
- 16:19They they went away from the script.
- 16:20They went and did right? Rex Ryan and snacks.
- 16:23I mean there were so many good seasons of Hard Knocks.
- 16:28Then they went too far by bringing that one in November.
- 16:30The mid season hard knock. Who watches that?
- 16:32We've got football. We don't need that.
- 16:35We don't need that. That's something that we do
- 16:36during the summer, absolutely. So I finished that up.
- 16:40I finished that up yesterday. And again, I, I, I, I hope that
- 16:44next Tuesday night just blows me away because I do love to watch
- 16:47Hard Knocks. It's it's one of those, you
- 16:49know, rites of passage as you inch your way closer to opening
- 16:52night of the NFL. It's one of those things that
- 16:55boxes you check in the month of August.
- 16:57So you gave me a tip yesterday on any given Saturday on
- 17:06Netflix, a series on the SEC and I downloaded it yesterday and
- 17:15I'm so glad I did good. It's so good it and, and I get
- 17:19it, half the audience hates the SEC will cut off their nose to
- 17:22spite their face because they're never going to watch anything
- 17:24when it comes to that conference.
- 17:26You know, that's just just the way it is, those people.
- 17:29Are mostly lying. I I know they will, but it's so
- 17:32good. I mean, episode 1 S Carolina and
- 17:35LSU and the build up etcetera. It's more than just the game,
- 17:38right? It's it's was it was when LSU
- 17:41went to to Vegas and South Carolina struggles with Old
- 17:44Dominion and you get to know some of the principal sellers,
- 17:46the quarterback for South Carolina.
- 17:48Great story and great behind the scenes with the LSU to you and
- 17:51the weeks brothers at linebackers.
- 17:54It was so good. And then yesterday or episode 2
- 17:56rather was Florida and the Graham Mertz in the injury and
- 18:01the lagway top rated court high school quarterback and waiting
- 18:06his turn and how injuries thrust him in the lineup and the
- 18:09raising money to buy out the head coach.
- 18:14It was so good. Trent, you're 1000% right, any
- 18:20given Saturdays a must watch and I can't wait to get back to
- 18:23episode 3 tonight so. I'm also through the 1st 2
- 18:25episodes. Episode 3 is about Diego Pavia
- 18:28and Vanderbilt. Is it?
- 18:29Yeah. Pulling the upset against
- 18:30Alabama is a a big part of that. Looking at the preview for it.
- 18:33So yeah, I'm excited for you and I'm excited that we're kind of
- 18:37watching this together at the same time, because it's
- 18:40incredible if you're looking for football content and if you're
- 18:42like both of us and love college football.
- 18:44And Hard Knocks didn't do it, no.
- 18:45Didn't this? Is going to fill that space.
- 18:49I believe in a big time wait. Plus, it's college football,
- 18:51right? And the pageantry and all the
- 18:52things that we love about college football.
- 18:54No doubt it's going to be deeply involved, no?
- 18:56I'm with you. All right, let's take Carl, then
- 18:58we will take a break. Ben Fox is going to join us from
- 19:01yahoosports.com. Talk about his piece on
- 19:04quarterbacks and the value to to the their team point spread
- 19:07wise, etcetera. Jim wants to join the program.
- 19:10Hi, Jim. How are you?
- 19:12Good that's any given sun Saturday is must watch Graham
- 19:16Mertz it's. Phenomenal guy.
- 19:17Yeah. Wasn't it good Wisconsin?
- 19:19I hated him when he got Wisconsin, but he came out of
- 19:22that looking good. No, I.
- 19:23Came out looking as a leader, yes.
- 19:25The Randy episode also pretty good.
- 19:29I don't like the SBC, but yeah, it's it's you got to watch some
- 19:33people. Absolutely.
- 19:35Do me a favor there, Trent. Pull up Washington's schedule
- 19:37real quick. All right, where are we going
- 19:39for Washington? Huskies or Washington
- 19:41commanders? Huskies, I don't watch NFL right
- 19:44now. Let me.
- 19:45Get to hang on a second. I'm going to do the same thing
- 19:48here. I'm a little slower than Trent.
- 19:49OK, go ahead. I listened to Rob Donaldson
- 19:52yesterday. What's the?
- 19:53Over under total by the way. I didn't.
- 19:57I didn't do under over. I did to make the playoffs, OK.
- 20:00Washington to make the playoffs. It's.
- 20:03Got them going. Nine and two with that schedule,
- 20:06They've got some, they've got some nice home games.
- 20:08Let me. OK, here we go.
- 20:09So they start with Colorado State.
- 20:11That's on. That's late night on Saturday.
- 20:15Boom, UC Davis, but let's get him into the Big 10.
- 20:18Ohio State to start. No, that's in Maryland.
- 20:21There's a win. Home to Rutgers.
- 20:23Should win at Michigan. Let's say they're two and two in
- 20:27the Big 10. You're almost everyone.
- 20:29I was. Like I think they can get that
- 20:31one but OK. Then you got to beat Illinois at
- 20:33home at Wisconsin, home to Purdue, beat UCLA.
- 20:37Boy, it might come right down to that last game.
- 20:40I see it the same way, right? Yes.
- 20:42Oregon. Oh, there's a path.
- 20:43There's a path, a path to 10 and.
- 20:45Two. Well, they're really nine.
- 20:48And two, and going into that game at home against Oregon with
- 20:51a playoff bid on, I love Damon Williams.
- 20:53I love the running back too. I love, I love Jed Fish.
- 20:57Yeah, I'm. A fan too?
- 20:58I don't know. Yeah.
- 20:59Donaldson sold me yesterday and he also sold me on Indiana and
- 21:03the under at 8 1/2. Yeah.
- 21:05It's going to see that under. At 9 1/2.
- 21:07So what was? The last one, Georgia under boys
- 21:09I love. Futures, yeah.
- 21:11Ditto. Georgia was the last one under 9
- 21:131/2. Yeah, yeah, it was.
- 21:16It was juiced, but I still put it down.
- 21:18Yeah. I like the quarterback.
- 21:20'S going to struggle yeah I. Agree with you.
- 21:22Good stuff, Jim. Good luck on your plays.
- 21:24I like you. I like it.
- 21:24I like. We're just thinking.
- 21:25Good to hear from you. Yep.
- 21:28Yeah. Oregon, right.
- 21:29That right there at the end, Right.
- 21:30I can. Envision Ohio State.
- 21:32Lost one and 1-2 and two and one, two and 2-3 and two, four.
- 21:36Yeah, a lot of. Trips though.
- 21:38A lot of trips. Where do they go?
- 21:40They go to Maryland, then back home to Michigan, then to.
- 21:43Michigan, then back home, then to Wisconsin, right?
- 21:46For those schools out there, the the Zig Day.
- 21:49Zig zag makes me concerned. Any chance that UCLA is good?
- 21:54Yeah. Like how good?
- 21:56Seven and five good. Yeah.
- 21:58I'm with you. I'll take the time out.
- 22:00Ben Fox joins the program next. yahoosports.com.
- 22:02Mitch Holtis. He'll join us coming up here at
- 22:0412:45. Who's in the spotlight today?
- 22:07Do you remember? I don't remember if I can work
- 22:09my fingers and open up my damn app.
- 22:13Trey Smith. Bright.
- 22:15Guard who just signed a big contract, it was a sixth round
- 22:17pick because he was injured. They got lucky there.
- 22:20Miller incond and underway in a Thursday.
- 22:22It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:30I'm Mory Condon, welcome back 12:30 on a Thursday, 15 minutes
- 22:35or so away from the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs, Mitch
- 22:38Holtis, his regular spot. Chief's daily training camp
- 22:41reports. Papa John's throughout the state
- 22:43of Iowa sponsor those. Ben Fox had a real eye.
- 22:46Opening piece went at yahoosports.com where he covers
- 22:50the NFL, sports wagering, etcetera on the quarterbacks.
- 22:53The difference of the point spread number from the starting
- 22:56quarterback to the backup quarterback.
- 22:58Ben Trenton, I spent a lot of time.
- 23:00I'm discussing your piece a couple of days ago when it came
- 23:03out. Appreciate you coming on.
- 23:04How are you, Ben? Doing well, guys.
- 23:07Thanks for having me. You know, Voice of the Chief,
- 23:09That's a I got a big, big shoes to fill here before he comes on.
- 23:12Yeah. You're the warm up act today for
- 23:14him. And we, we, we got all the
- 23:15confidence in the world. You know, I wonder if Aaron
- 23:18Rodgers would have seen your your piece that he's only 3 1/2
- 23:22points worth more than Mason Rudolph.
- 23:24And maybe he would decide, you know what?
- 23:26Maybe it's the end. Because that's one of the things
- 23:28that stuck out to me, just how Aaron Rodgers seemingly has
- 23:32fallen. Because I don't think Mason
- 23:34Rudolph has gotten better. But Father Time catches up with
- 23:37everybody, don't they, Ben? Yeah.
- 23:40Look, there are a lot of guys that that stood out.
- 23:43I think Rodgers is certainly one of them.
- 23:46We're just doing some videos for Yahoo yesterday and I said it
- 23:50and that's the prime odds makers too much about Rogers.
- 23:54There's a wide variety of opinions, some positive, but a
- 23:57lot of negative based off of just the last couple of seasons,
- 24:02kind of how he's looked. He was, I believe, 11th going
- 24:06into last season when I did this article.
- 24:08This year he was 20th and obviously changing, you know,
- 24:12backup quarterbacks and situations from New York.
- 24:15But overall, the general sentiment was just kind of, you
- 24:19know, we saw the best of him in Green Bay and even towards that
- 24:23last year or last few years, really the last year not looking
- 24:26like the same quarterback, you know, as quarterbacks get older,
- 24:30not wanting to get hit, not the same mobility, all of those
- 24:33things. He still obviously is one of the
- 24:36greatest quarterbacks ever, still has one of the greatest
- 24:39minds ever, greatest thrower of the football.
- 24:41But at a certain point, odd makers, right?
- 24:43They're going off of all of this data and you know, 50 plus years
- 24:48more than that, there just aren't a lot of 40 year old plus
- 24:51year old quarterbacks that are successful.
- 24:53It's kind of Drew Brees and Tom Brady, and that's a pretty good
- 24:58list to be on. But it's very there just aren't
- 25:00a lot of those. We tend to see people either
- 25:03fall off a Cliff, as one oddsmaker said, or just decline.
- 25:07And so I think there is a lot of infrastructure in Pittsburgh,
- 25:10but you also have, you know, backup and Mason Rudolph, who
- 25:13obviously has a lot lower ceiling than Aaron Rodgers, but
- 25:17knows the offense. You kind of at least know what
- 25:20you're getting. Probably not going to embarrass
- 25:22himself, probably also not going to set the world on fire.
- 25:25But just the difference between the two quarterbacks a lot less
- 25:28than obviously would have been 3-4 years ago with Rodgers when
- 25:31you're. Going through this list, I'm
- 25:33almost more interested in the backups.
- 25:35Who's some of the worst backups there?
- 25:36Who is maybe surprised that the odds makers that you talked to
- 25:40are down on those backup quarterbacks and maybe created a
- 25:43bigger gap than you thought going into the exercise?
- 25:46Yeah, it's a, it's a great question.
- 25:48I think there is still some disagreement as well on the
- 25:52backups, right? And because the two biggest
- 25:55areas I'd say that are difficult for the odds makers when you
- 25:58have a rookie quarterback coming in, some odds makers just give
- 26:01that guy for going into preseason or week 1 is 0, right?
- 26:06We're giving him a zero. We're going to see what it looks
- 26:08like in preseason. We'll adjust quickly off of how
- 26:11he looks the first few weeks. And then backup quarterback,
- 26:14same thing, right? You see some of them in
- 26:16preseason, but again, are they facing the ones?
- 26:18Are they facing the twos? How long are they in there for?
- 26:22You know, are they playing with the ones?
- 26:23Are they playing with the twos? So they're not getting a lot of
- 26:26actual regular season reps. And so some quarterbacks, it's
- 26:31almost like if you haven't seen them out there, some people
- 26:34might have a higher opinion. Hendon Hooker was 1 where one
- 26:38odds maker, which people do not like on Twitter.
- 26:41I put out you said basically if you revamp the offense a lot of
- 26:45because of pen and hookers mobility and revamp the offense
- 26:49a bit around him. He said, admittedly, he might be
- 26:52a little light on golf, but that the offense wouldn't look that
- 26:55much worse right. There's there's a big the lines
- 26:59have so many playmakers, etcetera, but he also hasn't
- 27:02played yet in the NFL. So I think that would be a wide,
- 27:05you know, difference between the two.
- 27:08I think let's say just looking at Kyle Trask is probably one
- 27:11that's that's down there and then 2 was bumped up.
- 27:15I would say this year, not necessarily by his play last
- 27:18year, but because Zach Wilson is his backup.
- 27:21And then Chicago to Caleb Williams worth.
- 27:24You know if you said Caleb Williams after last year was
- 27:27worth over 4 points over anyone, you would be surprised.
- 27:31But his backup is Tyson's agent. And as one oddsmaker joke to me,
- 27:35I think that guy played D4 college.
- 27:38So not a well known player, right?
- 27:40And it did look OK and stints. But I think with a lot of these
- 27:43back spread they can look good in a small sample size.
- 27:47It's hey, if they have to play 345 games handle season, that's
- 27:53going to be tougher for them. So those are I guess a couple
- 27:55that I would say kind of stood out I.
- 27:57Wonder how those odds makers would have seen Brock Purdy and
- 28:01and have seen him over the years.
- 28:02You know, he only played Dwight, but he was thrust in three years
- 28:05ago. Then it had the keys to the car
- 28:07the last couple of years but lost so many guys, so many of
- 28:09his weapons last year. He's right in the middle of the
- 28:11pack with Mac Jones as his backup.
- 28:13Just over 4 points. How do the odds makers view
- 28:16Brock Purdy? He's a, he's a great one.
- 28:20And part of part of this exercise I think is always
- 28:24interesting is you're also trying to, you can't always
- 28:28distinguish the quarterback, right, especially year over year
- 28:31from the team, how good the offense is, the defense, the
- 28:34play caller. And in this case you have a save
- 28:36Kyle Shanahan behind him, right? So probably last year was 4.23,
- 28:42this year 4.69 or excuse me, reverse that, 4.69 last year,
- 28:484.23 this year. And that was obviously not the
- 28:52season the 49ers were hoping for.
- 28:54But I think he's viewed as a very good to potentially elite
- 28:58quarterback. But he also has an
- 29:00infrastructure, right? With Kyle Shanahan.
- 29:03It would be different if he was on a team with a first year play
- 29:06caller that didn't have a good defense, right?
- 29:08I would think he, with some of those physical limitations,
- 29:11would be a little lower than, let's say a Patrick Mahomes,
- 29:15Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, those type of guys, Herbertboro,
- 29:20right, where probably no matter the system they're in, they can
- 29:23accommodate, they're going to lift the team, whereas some
- 29:26other players need some of those guys around them.
- 29:29And so I think he pretty kind of falls into that range.
- 29:33He was 12 last year, 15 this year.
- 29:36I think he's probably a little more valuable, right?
- 29:38If you if you just had a league neutral league average
- 29:41quarterback, probably a little more valuable certainly than
- 29:43like Trevor Lawrence to and some of those guys.
- 29:46But he also has that system in there.
- 29:48And that means that if you took Perdy out and you put somebody
- 29:52else in, there wouldn't be as big of a drop off just because
- 29:56you have Kyle Shanahan, that defense and everything else
- 29:58around them. Ben.
- 29:59Fox joining us as we take a look at the quarterback tears and how
- 30:03they rate compared to their backups.
- 30:05One of the biggest ones, and I think the one that got both my
- 30:07and Ken's attention was about JJ McCarthy and the quote that you
- 30:11have in the article from a scout or oddsmaker.
- 30:14Excuse me, Until he plays, I don't know how I can rate him
- 30:17better than Sam Howell. I wouldn't be surprised if he's
- 30:20a bust. This has been our summer
- 30:22disagreement, Ken of mine all summer long.
- 30:24Ben, you are a Vikings fan. What can you tell us about
- 30:26McCarthy? Yeah, this one, this one
- 30:30definitely hurt, hurt my feelings talking, talking to an
- 30:33oddsmaker and again, a guy who's been around for a long time in
- 30:36in Vegas, you know, and not a 23 year old here or anything saying
- 30:40that. I, I think again, everyone has
- 30:42different perspectives on the rookie quarterbacks.
- 30:45And McCarthy, obviously, in his second year, this will be his
- 30:48first starting year, so basically a rookie.
- 30:51And there's just a lot of unknown, right?
- 30:52He's almost in the same position he was at Michigan, which is we
- 30:57know the physical attributes. We know he was the winner at
- 31:00Michigan. He also had a great coaching
- 31:03staff and a great defense and was kind of asked to, you know,
- 31:06drive the car, right? Whether you want to call it a
- 31:08Porsche, Jaguar, whatever it is, drive the car, don't drive it
- 31:11off the road. And then that led to a national
- 31:14championship. And I think a lot of people view
- 31:16the Vikings the same way where, you know, KOC, Kevin O'Connell
- 31:21and that staff, right? They made Josh Jobs look very
- 31:24good. They made Sam Darnold, they got
- 31:26him paid. At the same time, though, they
- 31:29didn't let him walk, right? So there is that dichotomy as
- 31:32well. They've let him go even though
- 31:34he looked that good. And I think that just speaks to,
- 31:37you know, Kevin O'Connell as a play caller and just one of the
- 31:41top coaching staff as well as having Brian Flores on defense
- 31:44in the NFL. So I was surprised certainly by
- 31:48that. It was most people weren't
- 31:50necessarily saying I wouldn't be surprised if he's a buff.
- 31:52You know, he said time will tell, etcetera.
- 31:54He's not saying I guarantee he'll be a bust.
- 31:57I think it's just really hard to know until he gets out there.
- 32:00And, you know, one of the most interesting games certainly of
- 32:04Week 1 and, you know, potentially of the season is
- 32:06which one, right? Monday Night Football in
- 32:09Chicago, House of cores for the Vikings over the years.
- 32:12Caleb Williams has plenty to prove as well.
- 32:15New coaching staff there, new quarter back in Minnesota.
- 32:19I think it sounded like you guys probably would know better than
- 32:21I would. You know, following on a
- 32:23day-to-day basis sounds like up and downs or McCarthy in in
- 32:27camp, which is I think what you'd expect.
- 32:29Again, you have one of the top defenses in the NFL and in
- 32:32training camp defenses tend to start faster and offenses same
- 32:37thing the regular season as well.
- 32:38So this is going to be a season long evaluation.
- 32:42If he struggles early, I don't think it's going to be cause for
- 32:46as much concern. Obviously you'd like him to play
- 32:48better, but the Vikings also have a tough schedule.
- 32:50And so it's going to be interesting to see kind of how
- 32:54it looks. And is it that type of, you
- 32:56know, this the Vikings defense isn't as good, right?
- 32:58But it's a 2000 Raven situation where the defense is carrying
- 33:02the offense in a certain point. You say the offense has to be a
- 33:06little better if this team's going to get where it's supposed
- 33:08to go. And ultimately, that was kind of
- 33:10the downfall last year, although you could, we'd argue that in
- 33:12the playoff game, both the offense and the defense didn't
- 33:15play too well. Ben.
- 33:16Fox, Trent and I love the NFL and betting on sports.
- 33:20You check both of the boxes. Great piece.
- 33:22Well done, Ben. Fox.
- 33:23You can read it at yahoosports.com.
- 33:26yahoosports.com. Ben, thank you so much for
- 33:28coming on. Appreciate it.
- 33:30We'll talk to you down the road. Thank you, Ben.
- 33:32Sounds good anytime. Yeah, good to.
- 33:33Talk to you Ben Fox from yahoosports.com.
- 33:36I'll take the time out. Mitch Holtis joins us next.
- 33:39Chiefs daily training camp report Miller and Condon Iowa
- 33:42Sports Radio Network Miller and Condon, welcome back Iowa Sports
- 33:50Radio Network final segment, first hour of the program.
- 33:53Yes, it's time for the Chiefs daily training camp report.
- 33:57Papa John's throughout the state of Iowa.
- 33:59The Donaldsons sponsor these. Mitch will join us on tape
- 34:03tomorrow as the team heads to the desert pre season game
- 34:06number one. But he's here with us today.
- 34:08Mitch, friend Ken, thanks for coming on.
- 34:10How are you today, Mitch? Well, let me push the button.
- 34:15There you go. Yeah, there we go.
- 34:17Awesome. I think another great practice
- 34:21that had nothing to do with Arizona.
- 34:23It's the big picture and lively, lots of red zone work.
- 34:27And this team is just kind of yeah, they're ready to play a
- 34:31game now. But again, this is a team that
- 34:33continues to work with just outstanding work ethic.
- 34:37So yeah, it's it's good group. Let's get into today's sound and
- 34:44in the boy the middle of the with Creed Humphrey at centre
- 34:47and Trey Smith at right guard, certainly sat there.
- 34:50Good to see Trey Smith got paid again.
- 34:52He deserved to be. I talked about early in the
- 34:54show. He fell in the draft because of
- 34:56injuries at Tennessee late in his college career.
- 34:58But he's burst onto the scene and and man, what an impact he
- 35:01has had on a on a an area of the team, a position group on the
- 35:06team that hasn't always been, you know, the highest graded one
- 35:09would assume. But man, Trey Smith has been
- 35:11outside. Yeah, but now you've got a guy
- 35:14who was Pro Bowl last year, and with Creed Humphrey being
- 35:19considered the best center in the league after Jason Kelsey's
- 35:21retirement, you've got anchors and lug nuts of the of the wheel
- 35:26right there in the middle. Last year, Trey had 1117 snaps
- 35:31and did not allow a sack. Now, that's hard to do at a
- 35:35guard position where teams are sending you tackle over tackle
- 35:38twists and they're overloading the B gap, trying to influence
- 35:42you. Now, the Chiefs had offensive
- 35:43line trouble, especially in Super Bowl 59, but it wasn't
- 35:46necessarily Trey Smith. But the fact that Trey Smith now
- 35:49has got his second contract. He's not only Ken, one of the
- 35:52best humans I've ever been around, he is turning into an
- 35:56outstanding football player. That's the theme of this week,
- 35:59are guys who are merging maybe to jump up and take a next step.
- 36:02So I asked Trey about the new contract, what it means, and if
- 36:06there's a bigger picture. It's an.
- 36:08Amazing, amazing blessing. God's been really good for me in
- 36:10my life and being able to achieve that, something that I
- 36:13always appreciate in life, you know, getting a financial
- 36:16blessing to change my family for generations, something I don't
- 36:19take lightly, but I also understand the responsibility
- 36:21that comes with it. And, you know, living up to that
- 36:23expectation and trying to be the best in my position every time I
- 36:26step in that field. So there's a tremendous sense of
- 36:28pride that, you know, the organization felt that way about
- 36:31me. But now it's my time to go earn
- 36:32it, you know? As you take this next step means
- 36:35even more of a leadership role, right?
- 36:37Even throughout beyond the online, what about that
- 36:41responsibility and one that you embrace?
- 36:43Yeah. You know, I was blessed when I
- 36:45came in here to a really veteran online group.
- 36:47I had a lot of older guys like Laurent, Kyle Long, Mike
- 36:51Rimmers, you know, Andrew Wiley, Nick Allegretti, you know, Joe
- 36:53Tooney. Obviously there are a ton of
- 36:55names and a ton of guys that helped me push through a lot of
- 36:57situations. And for me, it's sort of, I've
- 36:59been here now going on my fifth season, my fifth time in Saint
- 37:02Joe's. And, you know, I have a wealth
- 37:03of knowledge that I could pass down to younger guys, you know,
- 37:05the rookies in the old line room and beyond.
- 37:08So just really being someone that, you know, younger guys can
- 37:11look up to and, you know, holding up that standard, that
- 37:13championship standard that I came in this organization with.
- 37:19And there you have it. I mean, he's he's not.
- 37:21Some guys get a second contract and they're like, I'm paid and
- 37:24I'll just cruise out and retire even before that second
- 37:26contracts up. Not this guy.
- 37:29This guy could be, again, high quality governor leader.
- 37:33You'd want to work for him or have him work for you.
- 37:34He's really a spectacular human who's turning into a quasi
- 37:39spectacular player. So Trey Smith becomes an All Pro
- 37:43Bean. He falls in the draft because of
- 37:44an injury and now you have a starting left tackle and Josh
- 37:47Simmons, who fell because of injury.
- 37:49It might have been a top, certainly 15 pick in the draft.
- 37:53What can you tell us about Simmons as he's being helped
- 37:55with now, Smith and the rest of that veteran crew up front?
- 37:58Well, and he's getting every Rep at #1 left tackle.
- 38:01I just didn't think I'd when we started these reports or even
- 38:04the week before we were up here working before we started the
- 38:06reports. I never thought I would say
- 38:08that, but he and he's doing very well.
- 38:10It's not like there's another hiccup here or there, but the
- 38:13dude is athletic. Now, you bring up a great point,
- 38:17Trent, because the world, if you're going to be a perennial
- 38:20winner in this league, you must be curious and you must do your
- 38:25homework when you're looking at these guys, especially on the
- 38:28medical. With Trey Smith, we did more
- 38:30work than any team in the league on his medical.
- 38:32People backed off. Now in the redraft, he would
- 38:35have been a first round pick. So with Simmons, and maybe we're
- 38:38a little bit fortunate here, but we thought, OK, he's dropping
- 38:42because of the medical as you alluded to, but it's your
- 38:45homework, it's your people, your scouting staff, it's beaches
- 38:49group, but it's also Rick Burkholder's group on athletic
- 38:51training. It's your team doctors.
- 38:53It is all of that. And to have a educated guess,
- 38:57but to do your homework. Again, people can hate the
- 39:00Chiefs, but goodness, right now they're the prototype
- 39:03organization of the winningest team of the NFL, the MLB and NBA
- 39:08over a 10 year period. Well, there's a reason, and it's
- 39:10the depth of the infrastructure of the organization and IT.
- 39:13Starts at the top with Andy Reid, no doubt right of time.
- 39:16But before we go, let's talk about Papa John's.
- 39:19I know you'll be stopping before we get on the bird tomorrow to
- 39:22head to Arizona I. Don't know if DoorDash or their
- 39:25delivery can get me all the way down here, but I mean, I'm
- 39:28missing I'm, you know, I'm craving it, but this we'll have
- 39:31a new special next week, but right now it's this cheeseburger
- 39:34special Medium 1299 and the Donaldsons, as you know, are
- 39:37phenomenal. Their managers and folks across
- 39:39the state. I love you guys have a statewide
- 39:41network because people are talking about it all across the
- 39:45great state of so thank you guys.
- 39:47Good. Stuff, Mitch, we'll hear from
- 39:48you on tape tomorrow. We'll talk to you next Monday.
- 39:50Have a good trip. Thank you.
- 39:51Thank yes Sir. Thanks fellas.
- 39:53Yep, see if. Mitch Holt is the voice of the
- 39:55Kansas City Chiefs. Trey Smith's a good one, no
- 39:57doubt about it. Creed Humphrey's a good one.
- 39:59Simmons left tackle if they saw that he's.
- 40:01Going to be good. I just know it.
- 40:03You know it. You know it deep.
- 40:05Down. I do.
- 40:05I don't want to admit it yet. They're finishing third in the
- 40:08West. Uh huh.
- 40:09Sure. Hour 2, now we're going to talk
- 40:12TV with Ray Cole to start things off.
- 40:14Cyclones at 1:30. Trent's Plays of the Day 150
- 40:18Circus sports sponsor those Miller and Condon.
- 40:20Hour 2 is next on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
