- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: But now I'm kinda like, I'm like, man, I'm really looking forward to just unplugging from everything and just being with the boys and hanging out.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_04]: Sure, sure.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_01]: I always get to see you fellas.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: Well, now or get away.

- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: It is.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: The the current course of events would lead us to episode three in season two, which is a deep dive into the personalities that make up sports cards CEO and I get the caboose here.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: I'm pulling up the the the end of the train.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: So today will be a little hand-bone episode.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: But before we do that, currently to soft with what's been going on in your world and pigeon land this week.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_04]: I love batting lead off.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_04]: There's a lot going on working on a lot of stuff behind the scenes, which I'm not going to share.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_04]: I'm just going to tease creating a monster here.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_04]: So I was creating a monster three headed monster.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_04]: But no, all seriousness.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: I caught wind of some of the stuff you've been working on.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's the other there's some DNA in my household that, you know, is in the nose.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm just, I'm just going to say,
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, that's all I want to say, okay.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_04]: All right.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_04]: Fair enough.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_04]: I got a box of 23 boom and draft here.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_04]: Then I'm waiting waiting to rip until after this.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_04]: So I'm buying this card in China.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_04]: Gary and I are actually buying it and it's coming from China.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_04]: And it's just been doing a deal with somebody.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_04]: I'm sorry.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_04]: It's not even trying to I apologize.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_04]: It's Japan and doing a deal with somebody from Japan.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_04]: is quite difficult when you don't have somebody there to pick it up because, you know, you're wiring money internationally, the communication barrier both using translators, you know, we're talking through X and, you know, it's just, it's very hard.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_04]: Like things come out the wrong way in translation and, you know, you're wiring internationally, but at the same time, you like, you know, you want to get the card and like, so this gentleman, looking up, we got through the rough part and
- 2:54[SPEAKER_04]: is kind enough to be sending the card FedEx is going to arrive here Monday and then I'll wire him the money within three days.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_04]: So he's putting the trust in me and it's I I appreciate that.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_04]: You boys have reached a new level here.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: Like we we have leveled up.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_01]: Do you know that reminds me of it reminds me of the movie the the book shoe dog.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: Have you all read the book shoe dog come on dude.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_01]: You're the sports car CEO podcast shoe dog.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's
- 3:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Phil Knights autobiography of establishing Nike.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's really, it's a fascinating read.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: I run it.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_04]: But he basically did deals in Japan.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_04]: That's been, it's been a new experience.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_04]: I've done a deal with somebody in China, but luckily I had Dick Tucker at the McCowfield to pick it up and stay there well, you know, money was transferred and everything that this was kind of a different situation.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_04]: So we'll see if the card safely arrives through customs.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: Are we not releasing what the card is?
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: That's the whole thing.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, we're not definitely not definitely not.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think I know what it is.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you probably did, but they could guess.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_04]: No, no, no, we're not guessing.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so carry on.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'll quit it.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_04]: So that was, I just want to share that because it's been, you know, there's always something new in the hobby that you learn every day.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_04]: And this week I learned how to do a deal.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_04]: on the other side of the world.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_04]: And it's interesting.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_04]: What's up with you, Gary Bubba Wilson?
- 4:22[SPEAKER_04]: Somebody was making fun of me, by the way.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_04]: The way I say your name.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_04]: I like you so.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_04]: Get Gary.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_04]: Gary.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_04]: Gary.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_03]: This is my son.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_03]: Gary.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_03]: From my wife doesn't she's mad at me.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, Gary.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_03]: That's my every time.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a junior by the way.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_03]: I know we didn't hit on that last week.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a junior.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_03]: So, you know what I'm saying?
- 4:39[SPEAKER_03]: That's what I'm saying.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_03]: Gary Lee Wilson, Junior.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_04]: Well, what's up with you, Gary?
- 4:46[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you know, just another whole week of fun down here.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_03]: Y'all, the only way I got them was show this week.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_03]: The guys did me up on my beeper, my farm beeper, so I was down deep into the woods.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_03]: I did try to get a little bit of a shave in before the show in a shower.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_03]: It's because I've been covered in buck urine and pigeon pigeon poop.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_03]: A hezeric would be familiar with.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_03]: But other than that,
- 5:11[SPEAKER_03]: I have, uh, just been living my best life boys.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_03]: I am, I am about to be game ready for, uh, for this release coming up.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_03]: I'm doing my homework.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_03]: I am, uh, started to kind of creep in.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_03]: Everybody thinks the Bowman farmer's just dead.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_03]: He doesn't collect Bowman anymore.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_03]: I'm back.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_03]: I'm back.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_03]: I'm just sliding in little buys here and there.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_03]: Current and I bought a couple things together.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_03]: But I, I really do like my batteries are charged.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_03]: Got to weigh enough.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_03]: And now it's about to be full on game time.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_04]: You know, it's funny though, Gary.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_04]: All the cards we go on in together, it feels as if I'm doing all the dirty work here.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_04]: They have a hard dirty work here here.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_04]: I'm communicating into pan.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_04]: I'm, you know, I'm the one doing the dirty work here.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_03]: Well, you're covering where when when I bring in good cards, this, they just they come and drove scourms.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_03]: So you got it.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_03]: It comes in, it comes in waves right now you're on the heater.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_03]: You're having cars head and you're what, but you know, you've got the current got the advantage.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_03]: You are a, he has the connection with the brakes.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_03]: That is not Bowman former material, I promise you.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, it's this.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_03]: Bowman.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_03]: Quarmer does not know breaks like Cern does.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_03]: So that's just not my, not been out in my world.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_03]: I've got so much less leave coming Cern.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_03]: Don't you worry.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_03]: Bring it to you.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_03]: We got a whole new season of heads.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_03]: We got some good vibes.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_03]: I think ahead.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_03]: That's like pretty much where I am guys still live in the farm life about to have to get back ready for Thanksgiving.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_03]: Got family coming in town Which is obviously coming up down the line and kids will be out of school for a while.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_03]: I am I will say and I will not Man enough to admit it.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_03]: I was a little bit card burn out there for a while.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_03]: I think in long baseball season.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_03]: I had a little burn out period.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_03]: My batteries are charged back.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_03]: I think my batteries are sufficiently charged now and
- 6:58[SPEAKER_03]: I'm almost kind of starting to dream of spring training a little bit.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_03]: Arizona fall leaves got me a little bit kind of back in, but I'm ready.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_03]: I am, uh, I'm officially charged now.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_04]: I think we're going to, we're going to talk about this soon on an upcoming show show pretty soon and we'll probably have on onto discuss it, but we very well could be facing, uh, a major league baseball lockout at the end of 2026.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_04]: There's a very good chance.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_04]: RM knows a lot more about the ins and outs of MLBPA versus MLB side, you know, all that stuff.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_04]: I would like to discuss with him how we see it affecting the card market and do we see it affecting the card market for better for worse and what kind of planning should be done now or six months from now to something interesting to start thinking about because for better for worse, if there is a lockout, it will affect the market in some respect.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_04]: You know, what do you do with your portfolio and how do you plan ahead for that?
- 7:58[SPEAKER_04]: So on the upcoming weeks, we will we will start discussing that, but it's something to to start thinking about.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: When does 25 draft drop?
- 8:06[SPEAKER_04]: Probably not so January now.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_04]: I think everything's a little late this year.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_04]: Day at top of Chrome update, which is where the debut patches are.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_04]: Adrops launches December 10th.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_04]: So, which is usually the time that draft comes out.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_04]: So, draft's going to be sometime in January.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: Cool, cool.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so it's been a weird week, man.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_01]: I've had a lot of personal consternation this week for some reason.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's just one of those weeks where there's like a weird consternation.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_01]: Not, not, but what's the beauty of that word concern?
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: What is the origin?
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: The language of origin?
- 8:38[SPEAKER_03]: How do you spell it?
- 8:39[SPEAKER_01]: Blatton.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_03]: Bella, how do you spell it, sir?
- 8:41[SPEAKER_03]: If you miss it, we're being in.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_03]: Ben.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_03]: Did you blow up your part?
- 8:45[SPEAKER_03]: You, this is your time to tell us about your week.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_03]: And you all love this feeling.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_01]: Go ahead, Matthew.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's a feeling.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_01]: Consternation, C-O-N, ST-E-R, in AT-I-O-N.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_01]: Consternation.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: No being, got it right.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_01]: True story.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: I did win the eighth grade spelling B.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: My middle school.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_01]: Me too.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_01]: Friday.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to check my fifth grade.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_01]: I want a fifth grade.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's almost going to fact check me.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_01]: But yes, I've had a lot of just personal things going on this week.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's been, I spoke right by the way, feelings of anxiety or dismay, typically something unexpected, consternation.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, it's just been pretty heavy week on a personal front with some stuff, some relationships, just some wrestling, on the card front, little Matt continues to like do little Matt things and he picked up a really cold Jordan.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: I have it handy because it was on the desk here, but it is a,
- 9:39[SPEAKER_01]: Superman, it's a 97 scabbox Z4's number to 399.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's called the RAV.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: Interesting thing, this card, there's only 13 graded in a PSA 9 and existence.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_01]: And I think there's only like 4 higher.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: Most of those cards are with BGS.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a super low pop Jordan insert.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: He picked that up this week.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: We continue to do that a little bit.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_01]: I've been pressing on him, you know, if cards were a way tomorrow, if they were gone tomorrow which cards on the shelf would you be cool holding forever in which cards do you not want to hold and that's really helped him kind of like lean out some inventory and think about like okay if cards ended tomorrow and you were stuck with what's on your shelf
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: which cards would you not have?
- 10:22[SPEAKER_01]: And so he put together a list of like his grail goat cards.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: Take a guess at the total value on little Matt's list of grail goat cards.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: Like if I gave him the budget, he would go out today and buy it.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: What do you think?
- 10:34[SPEAKER_04]: 350,000.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_01]: okay one and a half million three hundred thousand was the number it was interesting and you know again it was like a fifty-two mangle but it was like a fifty-two mangle PSA-2 like fifty thousand dollar card you know yeah that was a big one a Jordan star again lower grade fifty thousand dollar card those are the big chunky ones but then he had stuff on there like you know a Steph Curry tops PSA-10 or a gold you know Steph Curry refractor even you know
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: So it was pretty good for me and him to talk about that.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_01]: So I kind of put that little carrot out in front of him to challenge him a little bit to say, hey, man, if you do get to a point where you make a million dollars in sports cards and you want to put a quarter of that back into long-term investments, that's what that would look like.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_01]: So that was the kind of conversation we were having this week and it was cool, you know, and he's just so savvy with that stuff, man, he just gets it, you know what I mean?
- 11:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_01]: and start to see.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_01]: We've got a big wheelie maze coming in.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: We've got a 1953 wheelie maze SGC 4.5 that should be here Friday tomorrow from a more recorded in this episode.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: So pumped about that.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: That'll kind of complete our star run in the 53 top set.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see, I mean, it's been fun.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_01]: But just kind of picking here and there, nothing, nothing crazy.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_03]: Speaking of long term investments, when I started to dig through my cards and
- 11:48[SPEAKER_03]: You know, Justin keeps my inventory, but I don't really look at spreadsheets very often unless I'm looking at it for like a financial purpose.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_03]: And, but I actually started going through some of my cards that I just kind of had stuck where ham, you've seen some of the cards and how that works, a little trays and stuff that I have, where they're at, you drove you crazy.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_03]: You're like, how do you know what you have?
- 12:05[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I really don't, Justin does.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_03]: So anyway, I started kind of going through it the other day.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_03]: I realized, and I think this is a good thing.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_03]: I think I have almost 10 Connor Griffin oranges.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_03]: Sitting there that I didn't even realize.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_03]: I thought I had one or two.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_03]: I have like tenable sitting there great it bra
- 12:24[SPEAKER_03]: They're just sitting there.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, maybe two are all like eight of them were graded and they're sitting there now.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_03]: I put a pile of them and I just put them in the corner.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_03]: So now I'm excited.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_03]: That's going to become like a long-term investment for me.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_03]: Just for a bit.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_03]: Cool to have.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_03]: I was excited.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty cool wondering where the counter grip and population is.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_03]: I was wondering too.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_03]: I was wondering.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_03]: I was wondering.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_01]: If I aren't any available.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know it's like I get excited.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: I get excited if I put my hand in an old pants pocket and I pull out a $20 bill I'm like sweet a Tweet our bill Gary walks down stairs in funds.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_03]: Well, that's how I find When I when I buy I buy I buy you don't know how I go now You're a hoarder if I'm on a guy if I'm on a player
- 13:10[SPEAKER_03]: I am buying him until like I'm a stop.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, that's just I'm similar in that front.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, for sure.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_03]: Just stop pie.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_04]: So anyway, that's why when we see I die in a guy like we're like we both fight this guy.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_04]: That's when we go in again.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_04]: We're just like let's just buy everything.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_03]: Even I think very similar, and we do, we work, we're like brothers from another mother and a whole other part of the country, and we think very similar, and Ham does too.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_03]: We work, that's why this show works, boys, we're more similar than people would see from the outside.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_03]: That's why we're giving you the look of who we are personally, so with that in mind, let's get into the questions of our host.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_03]: Matthew Ham.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_04]: Start us off, Bubba.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I like to start off with questions about family.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm going to start off with a question.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_03]: Um, are you a, are you from where you currently live?
- 13:59[SPEAKER_03]: Are you talking about where you currently live?
- 14:01[SPEAKER_03]: Are you originally from there?
- 14:02[SPEAKER_03]: Are you a home body that's kind of stayed there?
- 14:04[SPEAKER_03]: And I also want to understand, are you an only child, brothers, and sisters?
- 14:09[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, what's the family back?
- 14:10[SPEAKER_01]: yeah it's funny last night we actually celebrated my dad's 70th birthday and it was really surreal having his 70th birthday party because i realized he's the grandfather now i'm the dad and i have my kids and i was kind of looking around for my grandparents and you know they've passed on so i have a younger brother mark and
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: That is my only sibling.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_01]: My mom and dad just had Mark and I.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_01]: We are five and a half years apart.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: We're not really that close growing up because of the age difference, you know.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: He was always the little brother running around kind of at the ballfields and stuff.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: But when we got to be after college, I moved away to answer your other question.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_01]: I'm born and raised in Lemme to North Carolina.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_01]: That's my hometown, coastal North Carolina.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: I went to NC State University where I met my wife Liz.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_01]: She actually played on the women's basketball team there.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_01]: We were college sweethearts, got married right out of college and moved back to Wilmington after that venture for a moment when my brother was in college and my brother and I got really tight and we have very similar personality styles, just big goofballs like the cut up and laugh a lot and so that's the family dynamic.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_01]: And then, Emmy, Mary Elizabeth, we call her by her initials, Emmy, she is six.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's a lot of sex.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, four times only, Cern, because I got you with one.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_04]: Good point.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_01]: There's a story about the twins, really funny.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: Well, part of our story is my wife and I spent two and a half years not being able to get pregnant.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_01]: Like, went through a really tough battle with infertility.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_01]: And that was a very defining thing for us.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_01]: For anybody who's been through infertility, it's very, very challenging.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_01]: Just because there's a lot of emotion behind it, there's a lot of doctors, there's a lot of procedures, and it was not a good moment for us, and really almost cost us our marriage back 15 years ago.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, about the Lord's Grace, we had Matthew, and then we realized that he has a sense of humor as well, and I want a trip to Hawaii with my insurance company at the time, and came back,
- 16:24[SPEAKER_01]: Which, you know, I didn't realize that's actually a name for marijuana and some play and so I used that publicly in a couple of speeches one time and people were like, you do realize that's like a name of a drug.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_04]: And I was like, it's such a dad joke to Maui.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_03]: Well, yeah, yeah, it was totally this I'm a dad.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_03]: Turn I started off you lead off for your start off question here.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_04]: So, it's from a business standpoint.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_04]: Have you always been involved in insurance?
- 16:50[SPEAKER_04]: Has that always been your line of work?
- 16:52[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_01]: First job I ever had was filling the beer coolers.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: So my dad worked for a beer distributor.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I got a job where I'd go into the grocery stores and fill up the coolers with beer.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_01]: And that led to a variety of different kind of odd jobs, cut grass, delivered, you know, I always liked to have money.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_01]: And so I always was working.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_01]: In college, I waited tables at a high-end stake house and used that cash to basically pay cash from my wife's wedding ring.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_01]: And then I got into sales after that.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_01]: Ms.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_01]: Funny, I had a friend today called me.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_01]: His daughter just got hired with Merrill Lynch.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: I was actually recruited by Merrill Lynch out of college to come back to my hometown and be a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_01]: And had a friend of a friend.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_01]: reach out about a real estate development company in South Florida of all places Palm Beach area.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_01]: So I four went Maryland and got into real estate development sales in South Florida in the boom of 2004, 2005, 2006.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I call those the MTV cribs years.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_01]: We were literally
- 17:54[SPEAKER_01]: playing around in crazy multi multi million dollar mansions flying on planes to the Bahamas on the weekends and riding on crazy big boats and it was just nuts.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_01]: Did that and then went that road imploded and it imploded with style, I ended up basically homeless but owned real estate that was underwater and I moved back into my parents remember the garage and that's when I started my first step in
- 18:23[SPEAKER_01]: insurance back in 2008 to 2018.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_01]: So what was the light to be almost?
- 18:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's always joked with people like, you know, when you and your wife are living in your parents' room of the garage, it's always awkward at breakfast when you're like, hey, yeah, good to meet you.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's a movie with, I think it's a silverman is the actor's name Sarah Silverman.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_01]: No, the, he's a guy on a thin silverman, maybe I can't remember the name of the movie, but he basically brings a girl back to his house and he's living with his parents and he doesn't tell the girl and his dad comes into the kitchen and is underwear and he tries to treat his dad like it's his buttler.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_04]: He's like, oh, I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_04]: He's like, gosh, where the hell are you talking to?
- 19:08[SPEAKER_04]: It's gonna, yeah, it's gonna bother me because I know exactly what movie you're talking about.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_04]: So,
- 19:13[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, I can't remember it.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: Is it weekend at Bernie's?
- 19:18[SPEAKER_04]: No.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_01]: Is it actually weekend at Bernie's?
- 19:21[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I don't know about the act.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_04]: I just, I know the movie.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_04]: In my head and like, yeah.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, but that was when I say homeless, like, I owned a house in Florida that was underwater and I had a tenant in that property.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: But I was bleeding out at like $3,400 a month.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_01]: And I didn't have anywhere to live.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_01]: So I moved back into my parents house just to weather that storm.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_04]: Gacha, where is the, what is the most exciting trip you've ever been on?
- 19:47[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm, exciting trip.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_01]: Two come to mind, I'm a cheat on, I went to Scotland with my dad, my brother, my godfather, and two other gentlemen, and we played all the golf courses over there.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_01]: We went to St. Andrews and it felt like I was back.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_01]: There was some like element of like the homeland, you know what I mean?
- 20:07[SPEAKER_01]: Like
- 20:07[SPEAKER_01]: ham my lineage is, you know, from that area in some capacity, I would imagine.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: But that was ridiculous to cool.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_01]: Scotland was awesome.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_01]: But in the States domestically, actually we had to like Tahoe with my old real estate, or excuse me, insurance company.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_01]: And I really enjoyed like trucky California, like Tahoe, we went like white water rafting and hiked in and around up there.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: So that was a really cool spot that I always want to go back to.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_04]: And if you could go to one, you got a book of vacation right now, budget aside, take the family where you're going.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_04]: St. John, really?
- 20:40[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, honeymoon there.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_01]: I actually spent 10 days there when I graduated from college, then honeymoon there and my wife and I've been back one time, and I haven't been back since.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: Since we've had five kids, like my wife and I have not traveled in a very long time.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_03]: Were you honeymooned in St. John as well?
- 20:54[SPEAKER_01]: Did you really?
- 20:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_01]: That is hilarious.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_03]: And you've got the St. John girl?
- 20:59[SPEAKER_04]: I don't think so.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, so now.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, US VR is just a really cool spot because you can actually, and I vote like, I live at the coast, so I vote, and I'm comfortable voting.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_01]: So like, we rented a vote, and we drove from St. John, you know, over to the Virgin Islands, US, I mean, British Virgin Islands, and, you know, white bars.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_01]: What's up?
- 21:21[SPEAKER_04]: Like St.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_04]: Bars.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_01]: No, that's for the moment.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this is like St. Thomas is St. John a US version of French.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_04]: That's, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_01]: This is like Virgin Gorda.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_01]: Tortola and all of those.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_01]: So love that, man.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_01]: We want to take the kids back so bad.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_03]: Did you go to, I don't know, I don't know.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_03]: I'm asking this, of course you did.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_03]: You went to Trunk Bay and you did all that.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_03]: Do that place is unbelievable, man.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_01]: Love, love, St. John.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I would say that's my favorite place, but the other two trips were a little bit more impot.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_03]: Probably enough, though, if you're in St. John downbound, like at night, you got to be careful.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_03]: I remember when, Veriford, I got married.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_03]: We were 22 years old.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_03]: We were downtown one night, you know, had gone out to eat and drink a little bit or whatever.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_03]: And like this guy is probably as close as I've ever been to somebody trying to mug us, like he was staring Jennifer's first down on my dude.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_03]: I'm out of getting the tussle here in an alleyway and saying John, so, but it's, it is beautiful though.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_04]: All right, quick questions.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_04]: Favorite food, Asian food, Chinese food.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_04]: Ooh, favorite dish from Chinese food.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: Ooh, chicken mix vegetables.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_01]: Just keep it simple.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like a ginger chicken, kind of,
- 22:32[SPEAKER_01]: Ginger's pulse, brown sauce, chicken sushi.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, love sushi, really.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_04]: What was it gonna say?
- 22:39[SPEAKER_04]: What kind of car do you drive?
- 22:40[SPEAKER_01]: Car do I drive?
- 22:42[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_01]: This is great question.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: So funny.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's so funny because some of my other day was giving me crap about my car.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_01]: I drive a Volkswagen Atlas right now.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: It is not my car of choice.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: What is that?
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: What is that?
- 22:53[SPEAKER_01]: What is that?
- 22:54[SPEAKER_01]: of Volkswagen Atlas.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's a set of as you knew.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, it's a year of Volkswagen, kind of midsize.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: So truth be told, the car that I've had for the last 20 years is like a Yukon Tahoe.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_01]: And that's just what I like.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_01]: When I was transitioning out of full-time ministry, just starting the insurance agency, the transmission went out in my Yukon.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: We had no money at the time.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_01]: And
- 23:14[SPEAKER_01]: I had to have a car and Volkswagen was just the only seven cedar and they had a financing thing and by the skin of my teeth We got into the Volkswagen Atlas, and I have just absolutely worn it out, but I am eagerly awaiting getting back into a full size SUV of Yukon.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_01]: I've never understood owning cars.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_04]: What do you least ever think of?
- 23:36[SPEAKER_04]: Me, right now when the process of trying to get a new one, but we're driving us clear.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_01]: We just bought my wife a new car and she drives a it's a Jeep wagon here.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_01]: The full size Jeep SUV and I really like that.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's nice to be here.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, nice.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_01]: Gary, what do you got?
- 23:54[SPEAKER_04]: I have more.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_03]: But it sounds I've got tons of questions.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_03]: I'll go into my second question about family life here.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_03]: You obviously have five kids.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_03]: Did you always want five kids?
- 24:04[SPEAKER_03]: Was it always one of the large family?
- 24:06[SPEAKER_03]: Is that been the dream or kind of came to you as it as it did?
- 24:09[SPEAKER_03]: They started popping out like like,
- 24:11[SPEAKER_01]: I told somebody other day, my life feels like the movie Grimlins like I literally spilled water and like it multiplied and then I fed him after midnight and they started terrorizing everything like that's my life I was never a big family guy at all you know my wife and I went through a pretty significant season of our life prior to having kids and
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: when we had Matthew and then turned around eight months later when he was eight months old and found out we had twins on the way.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_01]: We had three boys within 15 months of each other.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_01]: So that's the next three or four years of life was just like keeping up.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_01]: But I had a really wild experience one time.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_01]: I woke up from
- 24:49[SPEAKER_01]: kind of a sleep one morning and I really felt the Lord speak to me and he said pray for your daughter.
- 24:54[SPEAKER_01]: And that was when Liz was pregnant with Matthew, our oldest.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought Matthew was going to be a girl.
- 25:00[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, okay, we're praying for the daughter and sure enough he's a boy.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_01]: And then the twins come and they're identical boys and I'm kind of like, okay, God, got that one wrong.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_01]: And then I felt like he was like, no, you're not finished yet.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like,
- 25:11[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so we ended up having Sarah James, our daughter, our older daughter, and then, you know, it was one of those things where it was like, man, this is so, so hard, but these kids are so great, and so my wife and I had our fifth, and I can tell you, I feel like the least capable human being in the world to have a big family.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_01]: Kids are not my specialty.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_01]: I lack patience when it comes to just all the emotional stuff, so kids has been the greatest challenge of my life by far.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_03]: My follow-up question is, so you met your wife in college.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_03]: Did you meet her at like a party?
- 25:44[SPEAKER_03]: Did you meet her on AOL?
- 25:45[SPEAKER_03]: AIM back in the day, your chat with her online?
- 25:49[SPEAKER_03]: Did you meet her at a grocery store?
- 25:52[SPEAKER_03]: And you were picking up some, I don't know.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_01]: We met through.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: We met through a Christian organization called Young Life.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_01]: From there, let it.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_01]: The funny story is, as Young Life is an organization where college students basically go into the high schools and lead the high school kids and share their faith.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I have, I play the guitar.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: I still play the guitar.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_01]: But I was a guitar player for the Young Life Club.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_01]: And a guitar player at Young Life is like an asset.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_01]: We need you to play here, play here, play here, and so I'm playing guitar at this high school club and my wife is a high school student at the time in the, in the, in the cradle rock in the cradle and so she ended up coming to NC state on a basketball.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: played for K-yal, the legendary NC State Women's Coach, and when she came to state, she was like digging me, and I was like not really into her.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: I was actually into her, like her one of her friends at the time, and then all of a sudden I was like, wait a second, I actually like this chick, and I was like, hey, I think I kind of like you, you know, and she was like not interested, and I was like, well, you can't turn me down, like you've like me for like a year, and then I'm at him.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, my come on, babe.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, about a day later, she was like, yeah, let's, let's start this whole dating process and Amanda.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_01]: When he, I've years ago, let's start this dating process.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_04]: Let's do it.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_03]: All right, nice question.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_03]: two-part question if you want to hit on both parts.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_03]: So you have a radio past.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_03]: You had some radio experience.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_03]: If you want to touch on that a little bit, your experience there.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_03]: And also for those that don't know, you wrote a book.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_03]: And I've actually read that book.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know, and one of my follow-up questions is to current current, like you read the book.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, those are those were three questions there.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_03]: Radio past, you wrote a book if you want to dive into that.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_03]: Really interested in the book,
- 27:46[SPEAKER_03]: how long it took to actually write a book.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_03]: Cause I've got this series about that.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_03]: And then the last question is for current current I've got you read the book.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_01]: So I can tell you the answer the third question.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll mail him a copy.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_01]: I don't even know the name of the book.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_03]: So there's that question's answer.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_01]: So no, I have a copy of it here on the shelf.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_01]: This is the book, Read a Fine Rich.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_01]: Read a Fine Rich.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_01]: So the book led into the radio thing.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I was selling real estate, excuse me, selling insurance and had three kids and was just wrestling through like, what the hell is life about?
- 28:17[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what?
- 28:18[SPEAKER_01]: I can't keep up with this.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_01]: Like, this is just so overwhelming.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_01]: Is it all about just making more money and, you know, kind of securing your little corner of the world?
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: And had a process where I just started writing my thoughts out and felt like I had something to say.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_01]: And so I started writing a blog that became a book and the book was written pretty quickly over the course of a couple of months of me just downloading all these thoughts.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_01]: And it was kind of like I saw the trajectory of how the book started to make sense as a book.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_01]: And so the publishing process of the book took about six months time.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_01]: You know, getting the cover art on there, getting it edited re-edited copy edited, getting it produced and all the different things, but it was such a, it was an awesome season of my life because I was a young dad, you know, building my insurance career right in this book and it was all discovery like everything was colorful, it's like everything was brand new, I was feeling so energized and excited.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_01]: and it you know open so many doors for me to go and start speaking corporately and ended up leading me into a path of ministry getting into full-time ministry non-profit work and as part of that you know I was asked to go on radio program for podcast ahead my own podcast at the time and eventually we had a morning radio show with the ministry partner that I was with and so we did the morning radio program.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_01]: and I will tell you, I love the radio, like absolutely loved the radio.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_01]: It was so much fun for me because it gave me the latitude to just be myself and talk and talk and talk and talk and interview people and all that kind of stuff.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_01]: So I missed those days, but that all was part of kind of what led me to where I am now.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know, a lot of those lessons learned in the book.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: I always tell people this,
- 29:58[SPEAKER_01]: I had to write that book for myself and I was trying to make it this mainstream thing, but in reality, like I think I wrote the book for me.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_01]: Like I needed to read the book that I wrote if that makes sense.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_03]: How long to take you to write it?
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: Um, yeah, I wrote the book over two months in a download of thoughts, and then about six months to get it actually published.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_01]: Would you like, would you like type it out, or would you actually type, type, type everything out?
- 30:22[SPEAKER_01]: So the premise is, um, I had an aunt, um, who passed away from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: when I was 20, probably 25, is that the good hodgekins are the bad hodgekins?
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: Huh, it's the bad hodgekins lymphoma.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so she had non hodgekins lymphoma and she was 49 and the night before she passed away, I found myself in her hospital room and she was dying.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I was sitting by her bedside, just kind of talking to her and so forth.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_01]: And the nurse came in to prop my aunt up.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_01]: And when she did, my aunt kind of grabbed the breath and she said, you make my life easy to the nurse.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_01]: And the nurse looked back at my aunt and said, you make my life rich.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_01]: And I wrote that down at 25 and kind of buried it in a journal.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_01]: And then at 32 years old, going through some challenges in my own life, I remembered that story.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_01]: And the book is really about me saying, what does that mean?
- 31:18[SPEAKER_01]: You make my life rich.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_01]: What does it mean to live a rich life?
- 31:20[SPEAKER_01]: And so kind of relying on a lot of my...
- 31:24[SPEAKER_01]: love for public speakers and motivational self-help books, you know, the Tony Robbins and the Andy Andrews and the Dave Ramses and all that stuff.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_01]: Put the book together and wrote it and published it in 2015, 10 years ago.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_04]: How old are you now?
- 31:38[SPEAKER_04]: 44.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_04]: 44.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_04]: See you the oldest one of us today.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_01]: I turn 44 next month, but yeah 43 now.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_04]: Good book by the way.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_04]: What I enjoyed it.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's a lot of like anecdotal stories, right about like just life lessons learned about, you know, the kind of person you want to be remembered as like what does legacy about, you know, and then through the process of writing the book, I actually had I got diagnosed with writing malignant melanoma.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_01]: a aggressive former skin cancer, and that was really humbling for me at 33 years old to have that diagnosis, and that really opened me up to, you know, kind of another side of my life, a spiritual life, and all that kind of stuff, and so that's where all of that kind of culminated in, you know, that season of life.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_03]: So that's really, really interesting that you bring a melanoma.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_03]: You and I talked about it for the show last week that during mine, you're like, man, I should ask you about melanoma.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_03]: Because that's something we have in common.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_03]: We both actually had the same thing, which is in both pretty similar in age.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_03]: I think I was 29 when I got it.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_03]: And they basically told me I had,
- 32:41[SPEAKER_03]: like at the time when they call you, they're like, hey, Gary, and it wasn't the nurse, it was the doctor, hey, are you somewhere where you can talk?
- 32:48[SPEAKER_03]: And I don't know if yours went the same way or not, but it was like, hey, she started to give me life expectations.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_03]: You know, you've got a 50% chance to live to 40.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_03]: You've got a 35% chance to live to 35.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_03]: You've got a 25% chance in sales and what?
- 33:06[SPEAKER_03]: And anyway, long story short,
- 33:08[SPEAKER_03]: I think for this show and for anybody that's listening, if you're a man, that's listening to this show.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_03]: Most women go to a dermatologist to get their skin checked.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_03]: I did not.
- 33:17[SPEAKER_03]: I had not ever thought about it.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_03]: It wasn't even entering in.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_03]: I was actually at the beat.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_03]: and thought I got stung by a bee.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_03]: And on my back, and in my wife, and I was like, hey, that gets stung by a bee, and she's like, I don't, I don't think so.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_03]: There's a mole there.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_03]: Well, the next day it didn't tan around that mole.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_03]: Now, went into the dermatologist and all found this out later that I had, essentially stage two, cancer, melanoma.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_03]: Luckily, he didn't go to my lymph nodes, they cut it out.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_03]: But my point is, for anybody that's watching this show, well, listening, your man, get yourself checked.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_03]: and men generally don't have any idea women get checked generally and they they usually find it quicker but if you get melanoma and it gets to your it's it's a it will kill you so Matt I'll let you share on yours as well but that that's something I want to have a platform for because most men just I know I did a check
- 34:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well I was I was racing triathlons at the time and would you know go swim and bike and all kind of stuff and come in and you know take everything off, but my, you know bike shorts and my wife's like, hey, you need to get that spot checked on your side and I was like, I was spot check we talking about you know she's like, no, you need to get it checked.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_01]: And so I went to the doctor and she's like, Hey, yeah, then look good.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_01]: We probably should take it and I go, well, I got a iron man race, you know, next week.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_01]: Can I do it afterwards?
- 34:39[SPEAKER_01]: And she's like, that's fine.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_01]: You can just come back in after us.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_01]: I went and race this half iron man and then come back and she cuts it out and she called me the same call and she said, yeah, it's pretty malignant melanoma and the good news is we called it.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_01]: But you got to go back in and take an inch of margin in every direction.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_01]: So I've got a nice little, you know, four inch five inch scar on my right side, but that was just super humbling at 32 years old right to get that kind of like cancer diagnosis and think you're invincible and all that stuff.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_01]: So.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_01]: For, you know, again, to echo what Gary said, like, definitely go get checked.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_01]: And people think, you know what it feels like to experience something until you actually experience it.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I would have been to say the guys, like, I'm not worried about death or anything like that.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_01]: But when you get a cancer diagnosis, it starts to monkey with you.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_01]: And it really, it really presses into some areas that, you know, usually stay closed off.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_04]: Well, ladies and gentlemen, 66% of this podcast has had cancer.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_01]: Sure story.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_01]: But we'll see our before 40.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_04]: That's pretty wild.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_04]: For sure.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_04]: But go ahead.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_04]: Switching gears here for a bit.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_04]: So obviously you're a wolf pack fan and you like sports.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_04]: What?
- 35:47[SPEAKER_04]: Do you have any rooting interest, like do who are your teams?
- 35:50[SPEAKER_04]: And are you, are you passionate about any teams?
- 35:52[SPEAKER_01]: Like major league sports team?
- 35:54[SPEAKER_01]: No, I'm not.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_01]: Like I am the most boring sports fan ever.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like I, since fantasy football came out, I've always been more cheering for players.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_01]: I've always been more of a players fan than a sports fan.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_01]: Because in North Carolina, there's no sports teams.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_01]: Like when I was young, you know, the hornets, right?
- 36:14[SPEAKER_01]: Came up, but like who played for the hornets?
- 36:16[SPEAKER_01]: Larry Johnson.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_01]: Alonzo morning like I didn't care about that.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: I care about Michael Jordan Michael Jordan is from my hometown Wilmington, North Carolina, and so the first basketball game I ever played in high school.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_01]: I played at Michael J. Jordan gymnasium Did you ever refer UNC growing up?
- 36:31[SPEAKER_01]: No, hated Carolina.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_01]: I pulled for Duke as a like 10 year old up Because that's when they were winning national championships with late ner in Hurley.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I hate it.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_01]: I hate it Duke.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah
- 36:44[SPEAKER_01]: And my dad, my dad loved Coach K. He loves Chishewski.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_01]: So I naturally rooted for Duke growing up and Carolina fans, North Carolina fans, used to just piss me off because they talked so much trash.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_01]: And they were just all Carolina, you know, smug and all that stuff.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a real rivalry of Duke Carolina that I loved until I was actually recruited to play baseball in college.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I went to a camp at Duke, like a, what did you call it?
- 37:11[SPEAKER_01]: Like a recruitment camp.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_01]: And they, uh, they didn't offer me a scholarship.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_01]: And basically said, you know, we'll pass.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_01]: And state was interested.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_01]: And so I ended up going to state.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_01]: And then I was kind of like, all right, well, I'm all in on the Wolfpack.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_01]: So I, yes, love and cheer for with-pack athletics, but it's so painful that I cannot allow myself to get emotionally connected.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_01]: So, yes, I cheer for state, but it's just, you know, again, I stay fairly distant from it because it's just so hard, you know, to to go through that.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_01]: So, in a way, Curn, you talk about meds and jets and all this kind of stuff.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I admire the fact that you can continue to cheer for the teams, because I've had to emotionally detach because I can't handle it.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I wish I could emotionally detach some on the NBS.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_01]: But no, as far as pro teams, it's always been players, you know.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_01]: And it was always Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, Carrot Congenior, you know, Kingriffy Junior, you know, I was followed those guys.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_01]: And then honestly, when I was in college and beyond, I mean, I pulled for Philip Rivers because he went to state the same years I was there.
- 38:15[SPEAKER_01]: So I followed him through his professional career.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_01]: And he's also had a lot of sex in his life.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of kids, man.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, huge mini-man.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_04]: A lot of kids, but what's the best sport you like the Braves?
- 38:28[SPEAKER_03]: Do you like the Braves more or the Met's more?
- 38:30[SPEAKER_01]: Me?
- 38:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's the link for these.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_01]: If I had the pick, yeah, because I could leave both of them on the side of the road and everything.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right, yes.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_01]: When growing up, man, my best friend was a big Braves fan.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I would always watch him when they would like make it to the championship series and lose.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, they're, you know, they never win anything.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Ron Gantt, Terry Pendleton.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Sid Breme.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I was always like, I was like, oh, Marksy.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_01]: Back, oh, just yeah.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I was back in the day.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_01]: And so I was like, I was just disinterested.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_01]: But if I had to pick, I'd pick the braze, you know.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_01]: But if one's for braze fans, that's all right.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_01]: They like a conia.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_01]: That's just, they like, that's, that's just it.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_04]: They just like a conia.
- 39:12[SPEAKER_04]: What's the most exciting live sporting event you've been to?
- 39:18[SPEAKER_01]: I will say this, you know, going to a basketball game in Cameron indoor stadium is a really special thing.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_01]: Like hate Duke, love Duke, whatever.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_01]: Like going to a game at Cameron's experience.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure it is ridiculous.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's super cool.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_01]: Good atmosphere.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_01]: But the coolest sporting event I've ever been to was the 1991 All-Star game in Toronto, Canada.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_01]: My parents went to college with a guy who was the trainer for the Blue Jays at the time, and he got us tickets to the 91 All-Star game.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm going to do this just because this is my little thing.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_01]: So when I was a kid, my mom and dad got us tickets.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_01]: And so these are my tickets to the 91 All-Star game,
- 39:59[SPEAKER_01]: He was the MVP of the All-Star game, and he won the Home Run Derby that year.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_01]: And it was in the Toronto Skydome when Matthew and I got it back into cards.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_01]: My mom found my tickets, and they've got pin holes in them, because I stuck them on my little board.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_03]: Pin no PSA graded tickets.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I have plenty, I have tons of soap.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, these are my tickets from when I was a kid, the 91 All Star Game, and the crazy thing was, and I told Ripkin the story when I met him.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_01]: I was in line to meet him at Lobby the hotel.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_01]: I was like two kids away, and he's always super gracious, but he was like, hey kids, I gotta go.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I was this close to getting his autograph and never got it.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_01]: Until 30, 91 to 2000, and yeah, dude,
- 40:43[SPEAKER_01]: 40 years later almost no 30 year 30 years later almost we meet him in Cleveland at the national and he's something that's crazy how many world series is Calvrypton at one one two MVP's
- 40:58[SPEAKER_01]: rookie of the year right in one world series they wanted eighty three he was the uh... american league rookie the year and eighty three when they won uh... the world series uh... and then and be peace excuse me and then and then uh... he won and be p and i need one as well cool carry what he got
- 41:15[SPEAKER_03]: All right, how did Ham House begin?
- 41:18[SPEAKER_03]: Let's just give us the Ham House.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I know you've touched on a little bit.
- 41:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but like, how did you say, hey, we want to start a business.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_03]: I was Matthew already kind of in cards as well.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_03]: Like how did y'all decide how to camp out your own?
- 41:30[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, how did this begin?
- 41:32[SPEAKER_01]: legit.
- 41:33[SPEAKER_01]: I was in full-time ministry non-profit work had no income and my then 11-year-old son comes to me and he says, Dad, I watched this guy Ryan Trayhan on YouTube, trade a penny into a house.
- 41:46[SPEAKER_01]: And I want to do a trade-up challenge where I start with whatever and I get up to $10,000.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like,
- 41:52[SPEAKER_01]: baseball cards like I got a closet full at mom and dad's house like they're not worth anything he goes no dad the market's different i've been watching a lot of videos on youtube and i reluctantly did not want to do it but i very very candidly and very directly felt like i hadn't experienced where the lord really spoke to me and he said you wrote this book you want to speak to all these businesses you want to be this cock i gave a TEDx talk at one point
- 42:21[SPEAKER_01]: And at that time in my life, I was really looking for, like, notoriety as a recognized speaker, consultant, whatever.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_01]: That was kind of where I was.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_01]: And the Lord's like, yeah, but you're not even doing it in your household.
- 42:32[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you're not even investing in your own family.
- 42:35[SPEAKER_01]: How do you expect to go out here and whatever?
- 42:37[SPEAKER_01]: And so I felt convicted to start to teach my son goodness knowledge and acumen.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_01]: And so we started to do that.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_01]: And we took off pretty quickly.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_01]: in our first full year, we did like $70,000 of profit.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_01]: And that was $120, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000, $2,000
- 43:08[SPEAKER_01]: and then started operating.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_03]: How did you know about Bowman first, because from what I recall, y'all were heavy into Bowman right off the road like early.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_03]: How did y'all get into Bowman?
- 43:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so a good buddy of ours, Matt Levine, who works at Alt now, interestingly enough.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_01]: and this is cool man like it's this how the universe aligns like you know this is where I look and it's like Matt Levine's parents live a block from me and my wife put a thing on Facebook and said hey my sons are getting a sports cards if any of you have any sports cards and Matt's mom was like my sons in the sports cards and some of my boys go down to his house and Matt started talking about going to the national with his dad back in the day he owned like
- 43:46[SPEAKER_01]: really high in trouts and he gave my kids some like boba shit first moments at the time, which is like what 2017, 2018, somewhere in that range.
- 43:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_01]: And so they sold at the time they were the hottest thing out and then they sold for like 20 bucks.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_01]: So we sold them for like 20 bucks and started getting another stuff and then we had another good friend of ours, his name's Chris Riley, who was into prospecting.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_01]: And he said, I've got a bunch of cards if you want to come look at him.
- 44:14[SPEAKER_01]: And we were like, okay, and we went and looked at him.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_01]: He had like Adley Rushman first.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_01]: He had Corbin Carroll first.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_01]: He had, and I started to see the market for these prospects and helping him liquidate his cards.
- 44:28[SPEAKER_01]: And all of that kind of came at the same time 22 draft released.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_01]: And so we saw 20, we were selling Adley Rushman's and Wander Frankos and Hullier Rodriguez's to the moon at that time.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_01]: So we went real heavy in 22 draft and that was our beginning.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_01]: And it was a part of the hobby that I could process and understand.
- 44:48[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, okay, I get this first autos color and I just stayed in that lane from the very beginning.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the sooner that you recognize that, the better when you come in, you know, it's, I was buying rookie cards above first moments.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_04]: It's a groupy card.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_04]: Like, that's what I grew up collecting.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_04]: Like, it's got to be better than, you know, and I had no idea.
- 45:08[SPEAKER_01]: I sold my entire childhood collection for $600, when we started Hamhouse Sports.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_01]: 10,000 cards.
- 45:14[SPEAKER_01]: Why?
- 45:14[SPEAKER_01]: Because it was like 91 Donriss, you know.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, 10 quacks.
- 45:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, 91 Flair and I sold all of it except for one carrot con Jr. Don Russ rookie and a couple of objects and I kept a couple of objects and stuff.
- 45:27[SPEAKER_01]: So that that was the catalyst to get us going and we leverage those resources.
- 45:32[SPEAKER_01]: Our strategy has just been put everything back into the card hobby.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_01]: we never pull out.
- 45:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's not it's not the money never came from my household money.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't never use that money.
- 45:43[SPEAKER_01]: Never touch that money.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_01]: The only time was when we had the Jordan rookie come, I had to basically get cash out of my savings to buy that card and then out of the back.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_01]: But we've leveled up Hamhouse Sports from Matthew Litter and Cutty Yard and sold a week.
- 45:59[SPEAKER_01]: And that was our starting capital in 2022.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_01]: And then we've had 2022 into 2022 all 23 all 24 and then now through 25.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: We did the math the other day.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_01]: We've actually just a clip.
- 46:11[SPEAKER_01]: I'm pretty sure $300,000 in net profit.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_01]: Um, over that course of time.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_03]: That's great.
- 46:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to start up capital of whatever.
- 46:20[SPEAKER_03]: What?
- 46:21[SPEAKER_03]: Um, so rapid fire.
- 46:23[SPEAKER_03]: What's your biggest win at hand house single on the card?
- 46:26[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, and what's your biggest loss.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_03]: I've heard you talk.
- 46:29[SPEAKER_03]: I don't hear a lot of losses.
- 46:31[SPEAKER_04]: I know the loss.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but I want to hear it and more, but also your biggest loss overall.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_03]: What was your biggest loss in 25.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_03]: She didn't talk about losses much.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_03]: So I want to hear, uh, I want to hear about biggest win, biggest overall loss, biggest 2025 loss.
- 46:44[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 46:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's biggest win.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_01]: There's two of them.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_01]: Um, we bought a showhail, Tony rookie auto at the 2023 national PSA 9, crossed it to BGS95, sold it for 11k.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_01]: So that was a $6,000 up.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_03]: Basically, they were on that and you did the blue, you saw.
- 47:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, the blues because there were three cards within the blues.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I think we paid 14 on the blues.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_01]: There were three cards there.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_01]: So it was there was a blue, Bowman, non auto, and then two blue wave tops.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I think we paid like,
- 47:17[SPEAKER_01]: probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 or 16 for all of those, and we sold them for 25.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_01]: So that as a net deal was a little bit higher, but the show has probably the single.
- 47:26[SPEAKER_01]: The other is the Jordan rookies, and that was a situation where a friend had him and was scared to grade him.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't have the finances at the time.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't want to put the finances in.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_01]: We took all the risks to grade them, and I was very transparent to the entire process.
- 47:39[SPEAKER_01]: We paid raw values on the cards.
- 47:41[SPEAKER_01]: We graded them, we turned around and sold them.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_01]: And that total deal was probably about six grand, seven grand as well.
- 47:49[SPEAKER_01]: But those two cards, the show Hayo Tani, Bowman rookie batting auto and the star Jordan are two cards that I seriously regret selling.
- 47:58[SPEAKER_01]: Like I wish I had both of them.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_01]: Because the star Jordan's now a $60,000 card and the batting auto is probably a $40,000 card.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_01]: So, but we've made 300k, right?
- 48:10[SPEAKER_01]: And again, had to use that capital to do that.
- 48:13[SPEAKER_01]: So that's the wins.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_01]: The biggest loss of all time was a tray turner orange.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_01]: We bought a tray turner first boom and orange during the world baseball classic from mine and your friend, the value investor.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, he was just all over that.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Brent Supersmart, he sold the exact right time, tray turner hype.
- 48:32[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to Philly Baby.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to have a great season.
- 48:35[SPEAKER_01]: And if you remember that first half of that year,
- 48:39[SPEAKER_01]: So bad.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_01]: And we lost two grand on that card.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm going to go ahead and say this now, Gary, I love you.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_01]: I love you a lot.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_01]: You're a very good friend.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_01]: We use that $2,000 loss and we traded that into the Gabriel Gonzalez Red.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_01]: that we sold to you.
- 48:55[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, don't give up on gay boys.
- 48:57[SPEAKER_03]: Don't give up on gay.
- 48:58[SPEAKER_03]: He's crushing it in the minors.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_01]: OK, which is how we, you know, partially how we originally connected.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, that was that, that was that loss.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_01]: The biggest loss in 2025, do that have to look.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_01]: I think our biggest loss is probably $200.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_01]: On.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's great.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_01]: And it matter, right?
- 49:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's like a normal.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_01]: I'd have to look back at the chart, man.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think we probably have 10 cards this year that we've lost on, and I think the most we've lost is probably $200.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_01]: And it probably was on, it actually is probably something like this, where it's something like this, something stupid.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's a Kingriffy junior red mirror from like 97 pinnacle, bought it for 600, and it's probably worth 400.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_01]: Something like that.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_04]: You know what Carter's sick the ninety four upper deck riffy man.
- 49:50[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I do a lot of kind of so sick.
- 49:53[SPEAKER_04]: I've been looking for one of those.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, your boy over here just unloaded truckload of them.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_01]: What do you mean?
- 50:00[SPEAKER_01]: Gary.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_01]: Gary.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_01]: Dude.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_01]: Gary.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_01]: Gary.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: Gary.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: Gary.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: Gary.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: Gary.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: Gary sneakily.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to go ahead and tell you just to get a kind of tell your story here.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_01]: Sure, man.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_01]: Gary.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_01]: This is how smart Gary truly is.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_01]: Gary saw that card probably a year ago and he goes, this is way too damn low.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_01]: And he went and bought 10 of them.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_01]: 12 of them.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_01]: How many of them?
- 50:16[SPEAKER_03]: I think I like ten, um, I just told them all.
- 50:20[SPEAKER_03]: Do you have any left?
- 50:22[SPEAKER_03]: It's just sort of all.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_03]: What is this?
- 50:26[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, dude.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_04]: And he killed my mom.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_03]: I'm making money, baby.
- 50:29[SPEAKER_03]: Gonna make money in this economy.
- 50:30[SPEAKER_04]: He killed it, dude.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_04]: You don't even tell me.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_04]: You don't even tell me.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_04]: You don't even tell me.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_03]: You don't even tell me.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_03]: You're never getting that Ronald.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_03]: You're never getting that Ronald.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_04]: You're never getting that Ronald.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't see you as a grippy mangle guy to be honest.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_03]: Didn't see him, is that?
- 50:43[SPEAKER_04]: You want to Ronald to cool your red?
- 50:45[SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_04]: Get me one of those back.
- 50:46[SPEAKER_04]: Deal.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_04]: Wall straight up for eight?
- 50:48[SPEAKER_04]: No, hell no.
- 50:49[SPEAKER_03]: Which one you want?
- 50:50[SPEAKER_03]: I had about one.
- 50:51[SPEAKER_04]: Cash.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_04]: 150 cash plus on top of it on top of it yes actually know what I'm gonna tax you one seventy five and now because you sold them all without telling me okay I'm I'm sorry I'm perspiring now yeah okay anyway
- 51:07[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I love that card.
- 51:08[SPEAKER_04]: It's so sick.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I did.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_03]: So I've got to, I've got to meet potato's questions left.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_03]: I want it in the share with the current.
- 51:15[SPEAKER_03]: I want you to get back in any other kind of light hearted stuff.
- 51:18[SPEAKER_03]: Because I got some deep two deep questions to in it.
- 51:20[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, go, please go.
- 51:21[SPEAKER_03]: Are you done?
- 51:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you sure.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_04]: I got it.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_04]: Didn't ask me a crap story.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_04]: I was, I've never seen a grown man naked before.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_03]: Good.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_03]: Good.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_03]: And ask one of the weird questions that we get out of the way.
- 51:32[SPEAKER_03]: Ask camp.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_03]: How many best.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_03]: How many.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_04]: How many bowel movements do you have a day?
- 51:38[SPEAKER_04]: And to a question day to two in the morning.
- 51:41[SPEAKER_04]: Both in the morning.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_04]: Keep it early, baby.
- 51:44[SPEAKER_03]: And you back to back in the morning.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_04]: Probably so.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_03]: What?
- 51:48[SPEAKER_03]: We need an out in the colon.
- 51:49[SPEAKER_04]: Wow.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_04]: All right, going, Gary.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_03]: All right, back to the different different collections here.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_03]: How do you feel?
- 51:56[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know anything about your your past as far as growing up, but all we've never gone there before, but how do you feel?
- 52:03[SPEAKER_03]: your parents molded who met him is today.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_03]: How do you feel like who you are today?
- 52:08[SPEAKER_03]: Your mom, your dad, the way you were raised when you look at who they are today and who you are now.
- 52:13[SPEAKER_03]: How do you feel like are you like your mom, you like your dad?
- 52:16[SPEAKER_03]: Did you take bits and pieces of them both and your childhood?
- 52:19[SPEAKER_03]: How's it made you already at your are today?
- 52:21[SPEAKER_03]: at all.
- 52:22[SPEAKER_03]: Or do you feel like no one had molded me at all?
- 52:24[SPEAKER_01]: No, I mean, massively influential.
- 52:26[SPEAKER_01]: My family, like super, super tight.
- 52:28[SPEAKER_01]: Like most people would look at how close our family isn't go.
- 52:31[SPEAKER_01]: They're weirdly close.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you know, see them all the time live a couple miles apart.
- 52:36[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they're always helping with our kids.
- 52:39[SPEAKER_01]: They're very, very involved.
- 52:40[SPEAKER_01]: Interestingly enough, I have another set of parents that are God parents.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_01]: They could not have kids, and my parents invited them into our lives at an early age, and I literally have two sets of parents.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_01]: Like Doug and Susan treadway are my God parents, and then my mom and dad.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_01]: And so I've always been around and been massively influenced by older people in my life.
- 53:00[SPEAKER_01]: Like ever since I was like a little kid,
- 53:02[SPEAKER_01]: Um, have always been influenced by that.
- 53:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'm probably a lot more like my dad, but the thing that I would say is probably the most impactful for me.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_01]: Two things.
- 53:10[SPEAKER_01]: My mom had a statement that she said that her grandmother told her when she was little and it sounds very, very arrogant and it can be with the wrong perspective.
- 53:20[SPEAKER_01]: But it's you have few equals and no superiors and she said that her grandmother used to tell that to her and she
- 53:27[SPEAKER_01]: told it to us when we were kids.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_01]: And again, there's a lot of people that might use that and go, just arrogant.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_01]: But it always kind of like helped me have a ton of confidence in anything that I was doing and believing in myself and my skill set and who I was.
- 53:42[SPEAKER_01]: I've always been kind of an overachiever, top of the class, you know, been involved in a lot of different stuff.
- 53:48[SPEAKER_01]: But the one thing I would say that shaped me the most is my dad probably taught me the idea of
- 53:54[SPEAKER_01]: deeply valuing the people in your life, like celebrating the people around you, investing in the people around you, and so relational capital is something that I'm very big on.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's probably been the biggest marker for me, is just knowing a lot of people genuinely caring about a lot of people, and that's probably the number one thing that I try to instill into my kids.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_03]: Awesome.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_03]: Um, last question for me.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_03]: I ask her in the same question.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, it's reported.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_03]: It was recorded.
- 54:24[SPEAKER_03]: It's out there forever.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_03]: If your kids could look back on this and you're giving them in 10 years, 15 years, or looking back on this, Matt Ham's advice to his kids right now.
- 54:34[SPEAKER_03]: The road map to life, here you are in your early 40s.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_03]: As you see it today, what's the road map?
- 54:41[SPEAKER_03]: If you've got a one minute road map to your kids that are listening, 15 years later, what do you want them to know about and what do you want to know about life, 15 years from now?
- 54:49[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's funny you ask that question and kind of brings this back up like I had the opportunity to write that down that's what you make my life rich is about rich is an acronym and the R is recognized your broken the idea that you would not aspire to great wealth unless you said I don't have it so you can't have a rich life unless you recognize there's something deficient that I need to aspire to I is investing others see is choose gratitude and H is humble yourself with confidence.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_01]: So the book is about self-awareness, self-reflectivity, investing in other people, generosity, gratitude for where you are in life, and then navigating the world with humility, while being confident in who you've been kind of made to be.
- 55:33[SPEAKER_01]: So that's kind of my marker, you know, redefine rich.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_01]: I wrote that book because I needed it.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_01]: And so I've got five copies that I've kept on the shelf for each one of my kids, you know, and that's always going to be there.
- 55:46[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 55:47[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like we've we've learned a lot about each other less three weeks fill this.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know what's so interesting to me about all this is like we are all wildly different.
- 55:55[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we all came from different walks of life, different kind of, you know, geographical areas, but like, you know, now that we're able to do this together, it just it speaks to the volume of community around a common passion.
- 56:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and that's what's so cool about it is, and that's what I think our listeners, the true listeners, they really care about that.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, we found community around a common passion, you know, and that's to me.
- 56:21[SPEAKER_01]: That's everything.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 56:23[SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_04]: Anything else, guys?
- 56:25[SPEAKER_04]: Gary, before we Matt signs us off here.
- 56:27[SPEAKER_03]: No, just looking forward to now.
- 56:30[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, we wanted to do this kind of recap in exactly which also said, we wanted to do this not only for each other, I'm glad we did this for each other.
- 56:37[SPEAKER_03]: I think it gives us all those layers that maybe we didn't previously have to look at it.
- 56:42[SPEAKER_03]: But now you all have that as well.
- 56:44[SPEAKER_03]: But give them a little background of who you're listening to.
- 56:46[SPEAKER_03]: Here, I mean, we're normal, we're dads or businessmen, we're real people, we make mistakes.
- 56:52[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna have great episodes, we're gonna have bad episodes, we're gonna, we hope we don't have any bad ones, but we know we will.
- 56:58[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna have something you don't love, but just, you know, we love doing this, we love making this show, follow the journey with us.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_03]: And we will provide value.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_03]: We will, if you went back over the last almost 50 episodes who've done and you followed and listened and you'd be way ahead.
- 57:14[SPEAKER_03]: financially, if you've listened to those episodes.
- 57:16[SPEAKER_03]: So I think what we look at year two, that's my best advice to listeners is just tune in and take little nuggets.
- 57:22[SPEAKER_03]: So there's gonna be certain things you may say, hey man, we don't wanna hear about you shit in the woods, man, like a bear anymore.
- 57:27[SPEAKER_03]: Just tune that part out.
- 57:29[SPEAKER_03]: But there might be that same nugget that we bring in that later in that episode or that next time that you really depend on.
- 57:35[SPEAKER_03]: And hopefully we can share that with each other and continue to bring value
- 57:39[SPEAKER_03]: that's what we did this we did this to have fun number one but number two we wanted to bring value and so that's what we're looking to do is now we really get season two kind of opened up and I love that you two guys have been put in my life I've enjoyed every single second of the episodes we've done and honestly you've made me better um
- 58:00[SPEAKER_03]: at this business.
- 58:01[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I've learned a lot from both of you.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_03]: You know, both are totally different in the way you operate, but both bring a ton of value to this hobby, and to run in your own sports card business, and that's really what this is about.
- 58:14[SPEAKER_03]: So looking forward to season two, boys.
- 58:16[SPEAKER_04]: Same here.
- 58:16[SPEAKER_01]: Amen.
- 58:17[SPEAKER_01]: Amen.
- 58:17[SPEAKER_01]: Well, fellas, thank you all for letting me dive into the wonderful world of the hand bones head and I will I will sign off like this.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_01]: So you talk about impressions, right.
- 58:26[SPEAKER_01]: So a couple years ago, one of the impressions that I did was, okay, my man.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I thank you for listening to the sports card CEO.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_00]: We appreciate you.
- 58:47[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see you back next.
- 58:48[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, thank you, Nenzel.
- 58:49[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you, Nenzel.
- 58:50[SPEAKER_04]: Thank you.
- 58:51[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 58:51[SPEAKER_04]: Thank you, Nenzel.
