Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Daytona 500 Champion William Byron Describes His Crazy Week
Transcript
- 0:00It's been fun. I mean I I enjoyed all the stuff
- 0:03that I got to do this week, just especially because it was
- 0:07something unique and different and I felt like it was really
- 0:10interesting. A lot of interesting questions
- 0:13and just different outlets trying to learn about the sport.
- 0:16So tried my best to to do a good job and just honestly was
- 0:21running on adrenaline for for 2-3 days And I think, you know
- 0:25back to the racetrack now and trying to get to work.
- 0:27But yeah, I enjoyed it. As much as I am quiet, I feel
- 0:32like most of my quiet time is spent at the racetrack when I'm
- 0:35trying to do my work and and focus on my job.
- 0:39Steven, Toronto, CBS Sports. It was referenced that you were
- 0:42in New York and I feel like I want to say you've been there
- 0:45before, but I know this was a pretty extensive experience.
- 0:49So I guess I'll ask, how was the media tour and how did you enjoy
- 0:53your experience in New York City?
- 0:55Yeah. So my sister lives up there so I
- 0:57go up and visit her probably once a year.
- 0:59But but yeah, I I enjoyed it a lot.
- 1:03I mean like I said it was a lot of cool, cool outlets and just,
- 1:08I mean I think the best way to go around New York is in a in a
- 1:12car service just going place to place so we don't have to walk
- 1:15anywhere. So it was very unique situation
- 1:19but but very cool and just thankful to NASCAR that they put
- 1:23that together. I wasn't sure how it was going
- 1:26to go getting on the plane Monday night and I was a little
- 1:29bit nervous about it all, but I thought they managed it really
- 1:32well. So it was it was super smooth
- 1:34and the Empire State Building was probably one of the coolest
- 1:37aspects, just being able to go up there and and see the views.
- 1:40You mentioned all the different media outlets trying to learn
- 1:45about NASCAR and you know you're on SNY and were you on WFAN by
- 1:51any chance? Probably so.
- 1:53OK, just checking. But you know the the thing about
- 1:59winning the Daytona 500 is that it's really is transformative in
- 2:04the sense that it takes, you know, someone's standing in the
- 2:08sport to an entirely new level. And know you've in the past week
- 2:13and going forward you're really going to be serving as an
- 2:17ambassador for NASCAR and for the Daytona 500.
- 2:22I guess what I would what I would ask you is I know it's
- 2:26only been five days, but have you started to grasp exactly
- 2:29what being the Daytona 500 champion has done and will do
- 2:34for you? I don't think so, not yet.
- 2:37I mean just there's a lot of different aspects to it.
- 2:41You know, I feel like the the big thing for us is being able
- 2:44to start the year like that with a lot of momentum for a lot of
- 2:47different reasons. You know, for our team to be
- 2:49able to you know lock ourselves in and and also for sponsor
- 2:54engagement things like that. So I feel like for me personally
- 2:58it just is a, it's a huge relief and and something that I'm
- 3:02really, you know, excited to to, you know, carry down the road.
- 3:06I read Spencer with the NASCAR Wire.
- 3:08This is a process question. You've had great success here at
- 3:12Atlanta. How do you negotiate the two
- 3:15different pit Rd. speeds from the time you get off?
- 3:19Get off the track? Do you have how?
- 3:22How do you know how fast you're going you?
- 3:24Do you have two sets of lights? Do you downshift during the
- 3:27during the 90 mile, an hour section?
- 3:29That sort of stuff. Yeah, it's a great question.
- 3:32You know what I vividly remember from last year is just you know
- 3:36coming off turn to there's a a couple break markers and I feel
- 3:40like you know it's they did a good job last year kind of
- 3:43bringing those break markers into play.
- 3:45But you know typically we don't use the left side of the track
- 3:48to really you know judge where we're going to break for pit Rd.
- 3:50on on an Oval. So it's very unique and then
- 3:53like you said you're not getting down to 45, you're getting down
- 3:56to 90. So the gearing is a lot
- 3:58different, the lights are built way differently.
- 4:01I think we we chose to go with third gear this time.
- 4:04Last time we were in fourth. So I feel like just trying to
- 4:07understand the cadence there. My engineers just sent me a
- 4:10bunch of stuff and some some you know, layouts to make sure I'm
- 4:15aware of what lights I need to run.
- 4:16But biggest thing is don't speed because you know you're under
- 4:20green. Going that section is not that
- 4:23important in in comparison to being a couple laps down here.
- 4:27So you can go a couple laps down with how long that that pit Rd.
- 4:32is. Now your race is ruined, so you
- 4:36just got to not speed. Spencer Catch.
- 4:39Fence. Your father couldn't be at
- 4:40Daytona. What was it like when you
- 4:41finally saw him for the first time?
- 4:44Yeah. So I didn't see him till later
- 4:46in the week. He he's still he's he's better
- 4:48now. He just had a pretty severe
- 4:50cold. But he.
- 4:52But yeah the coolest part was I was driving home from the shop
- 4:55on Wednesday afternoon after we did the toast and it was maybe
- 4:59our second or third conversation on the phone.
- 5:01But he yeah, we were just talking about the race and
- 5:05something came up about racing for Dale Junior and how, you
- 5:09know, in 2014 that's the last time Hendrick won a 500.
- 5:13And that's when I was driving for Dale in The Late Models and
- 5:16he was just super emotional and he just, I've never really heard
- 5:20him over the phone get that choked up.
- 5:22But it was really special to hear that and just to, you know,
- 5:26having been through this journey with him and going to the
- 5:29racetrack every weekend together, starting out, it was
- 5:32very special. So you haven't seen him
- 5:34physically yet? I did.
- 5:35I saw him Thursday, so, so, yeah, but so yeah, we got to, we
- 5:40got to share some time and with my whole team really.
- 5:43So we we did a little party downtown.
- 5:46You've made two grown men cry. Your dad and Rudy, right?
- 5:49I mean it's. A little, A little crazy, for
- 5:53sure. I never thought I'd see the day
- 5:54when Rudy would cry, but he was. He was a basket of emotions up
- 5:58there. I I was told it took the Netflix
- 6:00deal for you finally to get in the back door at Lego.
- 6:03Is that accurate? Yeah, I mean we're working on it
- 6:06for sure. I I'd love to have a Lego car
- 6:08out there. I think they could be do so many
- 6:10unique things with that design, but certainly still going to
- 6:14build and you know, I got to work on my next project here
- 6:17soon. I got some ideas, so they're
- 6:20going to send me a quite a few sets, so that'd be nice.
- 6:24No more eBay. I usually go on eBay and get get
- 6:26the Lego sets because they're so back they're back ordered, but
- 6:29but yeah. We'll go right up there to
- 6:31Charles and then Kelly. Charles Autumn with Associated
- 6:35Press. So you have two wins here since
- 6:37the reconfiguration. So obviously you're comfortable
- 6:39with the high banks on a mile and a half, but I get the idea
- 6:43that maybe that's not a consensus opinion in in in in
- 6:46the garages. Do you hear during views on on
- 6:50on this track and do you think it's an old school, new school
- 6:53kind of thing? Yeah, I mean, look, you know,
- 6:55we've been really fortunate that it's worked out for us a couple
- 6:58times. I mean, the first, the first
- 7:00win, we're pretty dominant here, LED over 100 laps and put
- 7:04ourselves in a good position. But since then, you know, it's,
- 7:07it's gotten even more chaotic. There's two, two and three wide
- 7:10and you know, it seems like everyone's really figured out
- 7:13the draft here. So it's unique for sure.
- 7:17I wouldn't want to do it every week, but I do enjoy the
- 7:20challenge of it and I think it's a super exciting show from from
- 7:23the fans. I mean, you think about the
- 7:25attendance here, you know, when it was the old, old layout and
- 7:29then you know, seeing how packed it was here in July.
- 7:32So, you know, it seems like the fans like it and like I said, I
- 7:36don't want to do it every week, but I enjoy the the aspect of
- 7:40drafting and lifting a little bit and all the different things
- 7:43that come with it. Let's go to Kelly and then Bob.
- 7:48Kelly Crandall racer.com William With two super Speedway drafting
- 7:51tracks back-to-back with Daytona, Atlanta, Do you
- 7:53anticipate it would be a bigger mental or physical toll after
- 7:56tomorrow's race? Yeah, I mean, look, I think in
- 8:01the offseason I was like, man, don't crash in the first two
- 8:04races because you're going to be pretty beat up.
- 8:06So yeah, I think it'll be, it'll be physical for sure if you're
- 8:10in some some crashes. But you know this track is not
- 8:13overly physical. It's kind of right there in the
- 8:16middle I would say. But as we get to some of the
- 8:18short tracks and really scheduled in March and in April,
- 8:22it'll be, you know you'll you'll need to be prepared for those.
- 8:26But we got a little ways to go. So there's still some, you know,
- 8:28training and prep to try to get ready for this stretch here.
- 8:34Bob Parker's Fox Sports. The fact this race is now in the
- 8:36playoffs, does that change anything as far as maybe that
- 8:40you're locked into the trying something or anything does
- 8:44change the dynamic at all for you?
- 8:46Yeah. I mean, it just makes the race a
- 8:47little more important for us. We we just have to have a
- 8:50notebook for this race and so we need to understand what our
- 8:53setup needs to be and kind of tinker with that going here back
- 8:57to the fall. So we can't really try much here
- 8:59because we want to have a good day to point for the fall and
- 9:03knowing hey our car drove pretty well.
- 9:05So, you know, lots out of your control here.
- 9:07But you know hopefully we can have a good driving car and good
- 9:11strategy and you know just get a little bit of an idea for the
- 9:15fall. So if it wasn't in the playoffs
- 9:18you would potentially experiment.
- 9:19Yeah, I think you would just you wouldn't put a whole lot of
- 9:21weight especially coming off you know a win.
- 9:24Last year here we just had the point penalty, so we had a lot
- 9:29of making up to do, but but this year it being in the playoffs,
- 9:33there's there's a new importance to it.
- 9:36Let's go to Dustin and then we'll go right back here.
- 9:38Dustin Long, NBC Sports. William has been a lot of talk
- 9:41this week just about the fuel saving that you guys had to do
- 9:44last week. Obviously, I know fuel savings
- 9:46always a key in any event and has been for a long time, but
- 9:49just how excessive it seemed to be from a fan's perspective.
- 9:53Is there anything that can be looked at or considered in terms
- 9:57of that would allow you guys not to be as focused or concerned
- 10:01about fuel saving in a Speedway type of race like last week?
- 10:05Yeah, it's a very complex problem because you know, I
- 10:09think anytime, you know if you if you shorten the amount of
- 10:13fuel we have in the cars, you're just going to make the windows
- 10:16smaller and then you're going to have the same issue or the same
- 10:20thing happening where you're trying to have a a shorter pit
- 10:23stop. So it's just evolution and
- 10:26technology us, you know, it's really just human humans
- 10:32figuring out what the best strategy is.
- 10:33So I'm surprised it wasn't more of a thing earlier on.
- 10:36But I think with this package having track position be so
- 10:40important, with there being so much drag on the cars and really
- 10:43too wide, it's very difficult just to shoot your way to the
- 10:47front from the back. So I don't know what this, what
- 10:50the, you know, with the adjustment that needs to be
- 10:54made, but definitely it's not the most fun thing to do.
- 10:57But I'm going to do whatever it takes to win the race.
- 11:00So I feel like we were pretty smart about it.
- 11:03If you look at, you know, probably our average running
- 11:05position last week, it wasn't what people would think, but we
- 11:09would always cycle forward, have a chance to race it out for the
- 11:12stage win and have a chance at the end.
- 11:14So I'm just going to do whatever the the rules tell me to do.
- 11:19Steve Willis, speedwaydigest.com.
- 11:22So you're the first Daytona 500 winner to start on AE platform
- 11:27and now it's kind of perpetuated itself between amateur drivers
- 11:32and even now teams starting their own teams to bring some of
- 11:37these drivers into the fold in a non traditional route.
- 11:40As you look to those who are starting that kind of career
- 11:43path and not getting directly into a car first, what do you,
- 11:47what do you, what do you see as far as those next group of
- 11:52drivers that are coming up And you know what is your, what
- 11:55would be a suggestion to them as they start their career in kind
- 11:59of a path that you did versus getting in a car first?
- 12:04I think just having fun with it. If it is like what I see from a
- 12:10lot of young kids going to the karting track and going to or
- 12:15racing on I racing. It's just people are taking it
- 12:19way too seriously, way too soon. I feel like you just have to
- 12:22really enjoy what you do, try to learn, try to get better as a
- 12:25driver, learn more about the sport and then eventually you
- 12:30know, by the time you get to this level you're going to feel
- 12:32a lot of pressure. So I think not putting too much
- 12:35pressure on yourself at an early age to try to, you know, be the
- 12:40best. I think just try to get out
- 12:42there, experience things, enjoy driving the race car and and see
- 12:47what you can do with it.
