- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites, the podcast from the Volume Podcast Network.
- 0:15Speaker 1: It's Chad Noman and it is Thursday, so that means
- 0:20Speaker 1: it's time to enter the Thursday Thunderdome. On today's show,
- 0:29Speaker 1: our special guests will compete alongside my co host, my companion,
- 0:34Speaker 1: my BFF, professional sports better Simon Hunter, in an epic
- 0:38Speaker 1: test of wagers and wits that's quickly made this show
- 0:43Speaker 1: the most valuable sports gambling entertainment property of the Internet age. Simon,
- 0:48Speaker 1: I don't even know if I want to hear what
- 0:49Speaker 1: you have to say, because I feel like somehow from
- 0:52Speaker 1: our Tuesday podcast when you were talking about whoever decides
- 0:57Speaker 1: to marry you is going to have won some kind
- 1:00Speaker 1: of contest and I am out there preaching about the
- 1:03Speaker 1: value of love and respect and good partnership, and somehow
- 1:07Speaker 1: I feel like you're gonna tell me that I'm getting
- 1:10Speaker 1: ripped for it and you're a hero a little bit.
- 1:14Speaker 1: It's uh. I try not to listen back. I do
- 1:17Speaker 1: listen to the show during the football season, just to
- 1:19Speaker 1: make sure I don't sound like an idiot, but I
- 1:21Speaker 1: try not to listen back. And uh, you're right, I
- 1:24Speaker 1: said chicks way too many times. In a comfortable amount
- 1:27Speaker 1: of times, I would say maybe we have three female listeners,
- 1:30Speaker 1: and two of them reached out to me. One of
- 1:31Speaker 1: them said she prefers chicks because it makes them feel young.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Now she says she doesn't like woman because man's in
- 1:38Speaker 1: the word, and she doesn't like female because male isn't
- 1:40Speaker 1: the word. She thinks girls makes her sound childless. She
- 1:43Speaker 1: said she's fine with chicks, and I said, well, meet
- 1:46Speaker 1: me halfway. What if I just start referring to him
- 1:48Speaker 1: as queens? So from now on, if I talk about
- 1:50Speaker 1: my dates, I'll just say me and this queen went
- 1:53Speaker 1: on to a date, because I just don't want to
- 1:54Speaker 1: hear from people retiring chicks. All right, we're retiring chicks.
- 1:57Speaker 1: And I'm excited because I know you are going on
- 1:59Speaker 1: a date tonight. We've been We've been tracking your heartbreak
- 2:03Speaker 1: on the Favorite podcast, will continue to do that. I
- 2:06Speaker 1: know you have a big date with Facebook queen tonight.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I'm excited to see how that goes. Today, Simon, you'll
- 2:13Speaker 1: face two guests challengers. The first Simon, before you were
- 2:19Speaker 1: my bff and my companion. David Fleming, who is a
- 2:23Speaker 1: senior writer at ESPN many years Ago, a senior writer
- 2:27Speaker 1: for Sports Illustrated. Before that, Dave and I shared an
- 2:30Speaker 1: office at Sports Illustrated, and I think it's safe to
- 2:33Speaker 1: say before he was writing best selling books, Before he
- 2:36Speaker 1: was the most popular guest on ESPN's Daily podcast, before
- 2:42Speaker 1: he was going on to a Hall of Fame career
- 2:45Speaker 1: as a member of the sports media, I was telling
- 2:48Speaker 1: him how to write conclusions to his opening paragraphs. That's
- 2:51Speaker 1: what I've done for Dave Fleming, and now I've gifted
- 2:54Speaker 1: him with an appearance on the Favorites podcast There's Day
- 2:58Speaker 1: Thunderdome edition. Hi, Dave, I'm the O g b F.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Is that what you're saying you are the O g BFF.
- 3:06Speaker 1: I'll take it. I'll take it. And is that what
- 3:08Speaker 1: we're competing for? Your BF status? Is that? It is there?
- 3:12Speaker 1: Is there really a prize that is more worthy? Oh?
- 3:16Speaker 1: That's what you're gonna say, is worth less? But yeah, yeah,
- 3:20Speaker 1: I don't know about that. I think you guys, we'll
- 3:22Speaker 1: see what happens at the end. I will tell you, Dave,
- 3:24Speaker 1: I'm pretty much rooting for Simon, the other guest. It's
- 3:27Speaker 1: gonna make it interesting because we do share Chicago roots.
- 3:31Speaker 1: He is Chicago native. He is an Action Network NBA expert.
- 3:35Speaker 1: He is a valuable member of our news team, a
- 3:38Speaker 1: man who once said Zach Levine is my religion. He
- 3:43Speaker 1: smiles like he's never made a bet on the Minnesota Timberwolves,
- 3:47Speaker 1: which I know is a lie. Mr Michael Walton, How
- 3:51Speaker 1: you doing, Michael? I am doing great. Chat. It is
- 3:54Speaker 1: an honor to be on as the new kid on
- 3:56Speaker 1: the block. I gotta say, your friendship, that's a pretty
- 3:58Speaker 1: that's like a lot. So it's a lot of pressures.
- 4:00Speaker 1: But uh yeah, I never saw Bulls money line I
- 4:03Speaker 1: didn't feel good about. And uh so, as you can tell,
- 4:05Speaker 1: I'm not doing not doing great right now, but I'm
- 4:07Speaker 1: glad to be on. I really appreciate it. You do
- 4:10Speaker 1: have a tremendous amount to overcome. Dave and I go
- 4:14Speaker 1: so far back. I was at his wedding and I
- 4:17Speaker 1: remember very specifically when his wife rolled all the way
- 4:22Speaker 1: down a hill and ended up going on their honeymoon
- 4:26Speaker 1: with a pretty big shiner because of it, big black eye. Yep.
- 4:29Speaker 1: The staff at the at the resort that we went
- 4:32Speaker 1: to kept pulling her side, asking her if she was okay,
- 4:34Speaker 1: if she needed me to talk to somebody. She is
- 4:37Speaker 1: a queen, and she is the most important person in Davidson,
- 4:39Speaker 1: North Carolina. Here, chick, here's how the game has played today.
- 4:46Speaker 1: You'll answer two kinds of questions. First, traditional trivia questions
- 4:50Speaker 1: about sports, sports betting, and the world at large. Second,
- 4:53Speaker 1: completely subjective and totally ass and I open ended questions
- 4:57Speaker 1: or prompts that I alone will judge. Fair warning to
- 5:01Speaker 1: both of you, Michael and Dave. I will find a
- 5:03Speaker 1: way to root for Simon Hunter to accumulate points. You
- 5:07Speaker 1: must answer the trivia questions correctly and also convinced me
- 5:10Speaker 1: that your responses to those open ended prompts are better
- 5:14Speaker 1: than the responses from your opponents, because, just like sports betting,
- 5:18Speaker 1: you can't get him. All Right, let's begin, Dave, this
- 5:23Speaker 1: should be right up your alley. Because you have been
- 5:25Speaker 1: writing about the NFL for so long at such a
- 5:27Speaker 1: high level, I feel like you're gonna have a good
- 5:30Speaker 1: chance to answer some questions here. Okay, but you're not. First,
- 5:33Speaker 1: a couple of big changes in the NFL universe made
- 5:35Speaker 1: headlines this week, Michael. Yesterday, the NFL rolled out a
- 5:39Speaker 1: new seventeen game schedule, it's first increase in the regular
- 5:42Speaker 1: season slate since that season. The seven hundred thousand dollar
- 5:47Speaker 1: salary of this running back was by far the league's richest.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Unfortunately for him, a civil jury found him liable for
- 5:58Speaker 1: two murders in the midnight these and ordered him to
- 6:01Speaker 1: pay thirty three million dollars in damages. This one was
- 6:04Speaker 1: pretty difficult. I was thinking for a while, I was
- 6:07Speaker 1: thinking Earl Campbeler Barry Sanders. But I'm gonna go O. J. Simpson.
- 6:13Speaker 1: That was such good delivery, because I swear to God,
- 6:16Speaker 1: when you started talking, I'm like, are you kidding me?
- 6:18Speaker 1: This guy doesn't actually know like Earl Campbell, who can
- 6:22Speaker 1: barely walk, actually murder people in the nineties. Well, plan, Dave.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I remember back in the day, you did a phenomenal
- 6:32Speaker 1: story about Kevin Green, and now Kevin Green just passed away,
- 6:36Speaker 1: and like, the guy's not that old. There was a
- 6:39Speaker 1: cheesy family portrait in his basement when I went to
- 6:43Speaker 1: go interview him, and he said, if you mentioned this
- 6:46Speaker 1: in the story, I'll kill you, and and I think
- 6:49Speaker 1: he meant it, and if so, of course, and probably
- 6:51Speaker 1: on your advice, I did put it in the story.
- 6:54Speaker 1: And the next time I was in Pittsburgh, he like
- 6:56Speaker 1: hunted me down from behind and scared the absolute crap
- 7:00Speaker 1: out of me at practice. Dave, here's your question. The
- 7:03Speaker 1: NFL has relaxed its rules governing jersey numbers and expanded
- 7:07Speaker 1: the position groups that can sport single digit numbers. This
- 7:10Speaker 1: now includes defensive backs, so Panthers Workie J. C. Horne
- 7:14Speaker 1: quickly took advantage. He selected the number eight to honor
- 7:18Speaker 1: this recently departed sports star, a personal hero to Horn.
- 7:27Speaker 1: He grew up playing outside Philly. He will be inducted
- 7:32Speaker 1: into the Hall of Fame this weekend. Ob Dave, I
- 7:37Speaker 1: don't know how you got that. It's Kobe Bryant. Thank you.
- 7:42Speaker 1: That is the right answer, you Kobe Bryant. His name
- 7:46Speaker 1: is Kobe Bryant. Simon Seahawks wide out DK Metcalf computed
- 7:50Speaker 1: in the USA Track and Field Golden Games this last weekend,
- 7:53Speaker 1: running a respectable time of ten point three six seconds
- 7:56Speaker 1: in the meter dash, and although he didn't qualify of
- 8:00Speaker 1: the Olympics, he did beat the two thousand sixteen Olympic
- 8:03Speaker 1: time of the first x NFL player to compete in
- 8:08Speaker 1: the Summer Games. That was former Detroit Lion Javid Best,
- 8:12Speaker 1: who represented St. Lucia, an island nation located on the
- 8:17Speaker 1: eastern edge of this body of water. Arabian right, Arabbian C.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Simon Hunter. Why am I on a sports show and
- 8:29Speaker 1: I all I do is no sports and you're giving
- 8:31Speaker 1: me geography questions? What is happening? Are you trying to
- 8:33Speaker 1: set me up? It does seem unfair, does so completely unfair.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Here's your prompts, Fellas Seahawks wide out DK metcalf is
- 8:41Speaker 1: a physical specimen at the top of his profession, just
- 8:44Speaker 1: like you. Three. Dave also also wrestled in college, but
- 8:50Speaker 1: you have something else in common. You definitely won't qualify
- 8:53Speaker 1: for the upcoming summer games, but we can still dream.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Please provide or invent and a big event that, with
- 9:01Speaker 1: a little bit of moxie, you could a qualify four
- 9:07Speaker 1: and be become the betting favorite in summer games in Paris.
- 9:14Speaker 1: For example, if hand modeling was introduced as a summer event,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I've captured the men's gold with zero effort. Simon your
- 9:23Speaker 1: first This is where you usually you know, pull away. Yeah,
- 9:28Speaker 1: this one is so tough because this is one of
- 9:29Speaker 1: those there's so many options, and I'm one of those people.
- 9:31Speaker 1: While I was never really great at anything. But when
- 9:34Speaker 1: I was a little kid and I was fat, I
- 9:36Speaker 1: was really good at eating funnel cake. Like I could
- 9:38Speaker 1: go to a fair, I can knock out six funnel
- 9:41Speaker 1: cakes and gonna roller coaster, I'd be fine. It was
- 9:43Speaker 1: unhealthy as a child. So if I could go back
- 9:46Speaker 1: in time in the eight nine year old me could
- 9:48Speaker 1: enter in the Olympics and I could eat funnel cake.
- 9:51Speaker 1: That's the only thing I think I could dominate. Oh
- 9:54Speaker 1: my god, the idea of you at some Eastern p
- 9:59Speaker 1: a fair eating funnel cakes surrounded by mayor of East
- 10:04Speaker 1: Town accents murder, dirt or I uh, it's just making
- 10:09Speaker 1: me laugh, wearing your Potsible Maroons jersey. That's right. Oh
- 10:13Speaker 1: my god. This is becoming a testament to Dave Flenning,
- 10:16Speaker 1: who's one of his biggest selling books was about the
- 10:20Speaker 1: Pottsville Maroons, one of the greatest pro football teams of
- 10:24Speaker 1: all time. Yep, and they all ate funnel cake before
- 10:28Speaker 1: each game. I swallowed a lot of aggression along with
- 10:32Speaker 1: some funnel cakes. That what we're talking about, Simon, is
- 10:35Speaker 1: that is that the situation we're listening all right? Next up, Dave,
- 10:40Speaker 1: guess what your next in the response, funnel Cake is
- 10:43Speaker 1: pretty good. Yeah, funnel Cake is gonna be hard to beat.
- 10:45Speaker 1: First of all, I'm pretty sure I can still qualify
- 10:48Speaker 1: and wrestling those those guys, aren't that tough for anything
- 10:51Speaker 1: like that? Not? Well, so if I had to come
- 10:54Speaker 1: up with my own thing as the father of two
- 10:57Speaker 1: teenage daughters, I really do leave. I honestly believe this
- 11:02Speaker 1: that I am in the world's n point nine percent
- 11:06Speaker 1: percentile in dad shopping. So if we could just make
- 11:11Speaker 1: that an Olympic event, like I can crush an urban outfitters,
- 11:14Speaker 1: you bring me in there, I'll get it. I got
- 11:16Speaker 1: the outfit, I got that I can get, like the
- 11:19Speaker 1: ear rings that match the bag. I'm telling you, I
- 11:22Speaker 1: wouldn't just qualify. I would win Olympic gold guaranteed. That's
- 11:25Speaker 1: pretty good. As someone who is the father of two
- 11:29Speaker 1: teenage boys and never has to shop, I can appreciate
- 11:33Speaker 1: the challenge that that would require and the strengths and
- 11:36Speaker 1: feats that you'd have to go through to become really
- 11:39Speaker 1: good at that. So I will I will have to
- 11:41Speaker 1: consider it. Michael Walton out anyone who knows me well
- 11:46Speaker 1: aside from the Chicago Bulls, my other team that got
- 11:49Speaker 1: me into basketball is Duke Um get a lot of
- 11:51Speaker 1: hate for it, but I've been sticking with him this long.
- 11:54Speaker 1: So team I grew up on one of the national championships.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Duke's all time leader in charge of Shane Battier with
- 11:59Speaker 1: a hundred and eleven charges. Uh in his career. Absolutely bananas.
- 12:03Speaker 1: It's gonna be a charge, says is very charge of
- 12:08Speaker 1: the game. So obviously basketball, you know, I'm not in
- 12:11Speaker 1: that kind of shape. I'm not gonna do anything they're
- 12:13Speaker 1: so charge drawing, uh is my competition. Now bear with
- 12:17Speaker 1: me here. Obviously we're doing amateur athletes like back in
- 12:19Speaker 1: the old day, So no professional players, only amateurs because
- 12:22Speaker 1: I'm not a pro um. You start at the three
- 12:25Speaker 1: point line, the opposing player starts at half court. And
- 12:28Speaker 1: I'm a master of angles, so I'm cutting down those angles.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I learned from the Grace and Allen's the Jay Williams.
- 12:33Speaker 1: So charge drawing specifically would be my competition. And I
- 12:37Speaker 1: think I'm honestly adding a lot of entertainment value to
- 12:39Speaker 1: the Olympics because even if I fail, everyone wants to
- 12:42Speaker 1: see a guy get, you know, crushed by an athlete
- 12:44Speaker 1: trying to jump over him and dunk of basketball. So
- 12:46Speaker 1: I think my charge drawing is gonna really show people
- 12:49Speaker 1: my technique on the defensive side of the ball. I
- 12:52Speaker 1: don't think the competition in the prompt has ever been
- 12:54Speaker 1: closer because you were so specific about how you would
- 12:58Speaker 1: do it and why you were inspired for this. I
- 13:01Speaker 1: love the creativity. Do you get extra points for like
- 13:05Speaker 1: style and distance after you? Yes, you do absolutely get
- 13:10Speaker 1: points for the style. And that's where the duke thing
- 13:12Speaker 1: comes in because, like, because of my mastery of angles,
- 13:15Speaker 1: I'm not the fleetest of foot, but I'm slapping the
- 13:17Speaker 1: floor and I'm still getting over there in time to
- 13:19Speaker 1: cut it down. So I'm giving the crowd what they want.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I think it's really gonna be a good event. So
- 13:23Speaker 1: you know what, Dave, I'm glad you asked that follow
- 13:25Speaker 1: up question. I'm giving it to Michael. I'm giving Michael
- 13:28Speaker 1: because he thought so hard about this. It's it's almost
- 13:32Speaker 1: as if he truly imagined this was an Olympic sport
- 13:35Speaker 1: and he didn't just think, how am I going to participate?
- 13:38Speaker 1: But what is the end result going to be? What
- 13:41Speaker 1: are the people who I am taking the charges from?
- 13:44Speaker 1: How are they going to move on? In life, he
- 13:46Speaker 1: thought about the details like slapping the floor. Simon, Funnel
- 13:49Speaker 1: kicks are super funny and I like to think of
- 13:51Speaker 1: you as a pudgy little boy. But I feel like
- 13:54Speaker 1: Michael Walton and the level of depth that he went
- 13:57Speaker 1: to engaging in the Olympic Dream. We're giving it to
- 14:00Speaker 1: Michael Walton. Part two, appropriately named given how this segment
- 14:06Speaker 1: is ending, Let's fight about it. One of the most
- 14:08Speaker 1: anticipated spectacles of the summer arrives in just a few weeks,
- 14:12Speaker 1: with undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather squaring off against social
- 14:17Speaker 1: media Maven Logan Paul in an exhibition boxing match in Miami.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Earlier this week, Logan's brother Jake incited quite a kerfuffle
- 14:26Speaker 1: when he stole the hat off Mayweather's head after their
- 14:29Speaker 1: press conference. To commemorate the latest chapter in viral fight content,
- 14:34Speaker 1: we'll look back at a few of our favorite fights
- 14:36Speaker 1: from the sports world. Michael. One of the most shameful
- 14:39Speaker 1: chapters in Chicago sports fight history open and closed on August.
- 14:45Speaker 1: On that day, this twenty six year old White Sox
- 14:48Speaker 1: player charged the mound against Texas Rangers pitcher Nolan Ryan,
- 14:53Speaker 1: despite being a full twenty years older. Ryan put this
- 14:57Speaker 1: third baseman and future White Sox manager in to a
- 15:00Speaker 1: headlock and punched him repeatedly in one of the greatest
- 15:04Speaker 1: displays of dad strength ever recorded. Who was the player?
- 15:09Speaker 1: That was the player that was hit the white side?
- 15:12Speaker 1: So it's funny because right off the top of my head,
- 15:14Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure I got it um. And it's funny
- 15:18Speaker 1: because my first guest, again not trying to always throw
- 15:20Speaker 1: you guys off the scent, but off the top of
- 15:22Speaker 1: my head because of personal relationships, past things I wanted.
- 15:25Speaker 1: I wanted to say Ozzy Gian but even if that
- 15:29Speaker 1: was right, I wouldn't say it because I don't think
- 15:31Speaker 1: Ozzie would ever lose a fighter get punched, and I
- 15:33Speaker 1: won't say that like on something that's going out. So,
- 15:36Speaker 1: Robin Ventura, you are a hundred percent correct, And I
- 15:41Speaker 1: gotta tell you, I thought you were going to say
- 15:43Speaker 1: Earl Campbell Simon. Team chemistry is crucial to building a
- 15:50Speaker 1: successful team, as we see here on the Favorites podcast,
- 15:54Speaker 1: and the New York Jets haven't displayed much chemistry or
- 15:56Speaker 1: success in recent years. Their only winning season was in
- 16:00Speaker 1: two thousand fifteen, when Ryan Fitzpatrick took the week one
- 16:03Speaker 1: starting job from this young and unpopular quarterback after that
- 16:09Speaker 1: player's jaw was broken by a teammate in a fight
- 16:12Speaker 1: over six hundred dollars. Who was that young and unpopular
- 16:17Speaker 1: quarterback whose jaw was broken? Oh my god, I know
- 16:21Speaker 1: because I played with w so much back in the
- 16:23Speaker 1: day on and said, people, Smith, you got it. Good job.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Oh day, this one is right up your alley. And
- 16:34Speaker 1: I was gonna say, Tim Tebow Dave. The most infamous
- 16:39Speaker 1: brawl in NBA history is undoubtedly the Malice of the Palace,
- 16:44Speaker 1: the two thousand four melee between the Pasterers, Pistons, and
- 16:48Speaker 1: basically every fan in attendance that evening. After the dust settled,
- 16:52Speaker 1: Nine total players served suspensions, but four players were suspended
- 16:57Speaker 1: indefinitely by the NBA the day after the brawl. The
- 17:01Speaker 1: most famous of these primary four was around our Test,
- 17:05Speaker 1: who served in eighty six games suspension, the longest ban
- 17:09Speaker 1: for an on court incident in league history. The other three,
- 17:13Speaker 1: two pacers and one piston would eventually be suspended a
- 17:18Speaker 1: total of fifty one games for one point each. Name
- 17:23Speaker 1: these three players. I'm not even sure I can name
- 17:27Speaker 1: a single Indiana pacer, Ben Wallace, Stephen Jackson Jermaine O'Neill. Awesome.
- 17:36Speaker 1: You never would have gotten that. Thanks. Another one of
- 17:39Speaker 1: our favorite sports altercations featured Detroit Pistons. In in April.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Between Detroit and the seventh Philadelphia seventy six, Isaiah Thomas
- 17:49Speaker 1: was ejected for punching former teammate Rick Mahorne late in
- 17:53Speaker 1: the fourth quarter. A brawl erupted after Charles Barkley exchange
- 17:57Speaker 1: punches with this universally loathed bad boy Piston, a man
- 18:03Speaker 1: so famous for inciting on court violence. The video game
- 18:07Speaker 1: that bore his name was called Combat Basketball. So okay,
- 18:12Speaker 1: if it's immediately who I think? He was? A former
- 18:16Speaker 1: Slash current w n B A coach, so Bill Lambier.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Isaiah ejected Rodman with a push on the horn. Lamee
- 18:26Speaker 1: Beer follows with the ball and then Barkley and lane Beer.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Barkley gets in the left lane. Beer will come back
- 18:31Speaker 1: with an upper cut. It was an ugly situation. Barkley
- 18:35Speaker 1: went into the locker room and actually broke a toilet seed.
- 18:38Speaker 1: He was so mad. Wow, very impressive, Simon. In September
- 18:42Speaker 1: of two thousands, this NFL wide receiver inside of a
- 18:45Speaker 1: fight a hatred of every football fan in Texas and
- 18:48Speaker 1: a one game suspension from his own coach when he
- 18:51Speaker 1: scored two touchdowns in Cowboy Stadium and celebrated each one
- 18:54Speaker 1: by running back to midfield to stand on their iconic logo,
- 18:58Speaker 1: oh oh oh touchdown. It's a kid heading from midfield
- 19:06Speaker 1: there he goes. He's there's gonna be a penalty on
- 19:09Speaker 1: George Tea because he's gonna clock him. Now, team is
- 19:14Speaker 1: gonna be kicked out in the game. I gotta tell you,
- 19:17Speaker 1: I don't blame Tea for doing that. You gotta have
- 19:20Speaker 1: some dignity when you're playing this game. Do I get
- 19:24Speaker 1: to tell my fun TiO story? Now? When TiO worked
- 19:27Speaker 1: on his driveway that was down the street from where
- 19:29Speaker 1: I lived, I was there. You can see my feet
- 19:32Speaker 1: in the video. True story. I was there for the
- 19:35Speaker 1: Teo workout in his driveway. Did you do anything? We
- 19:39Speaker 1: were kids, so we were like trying to get attention,
- 19:41Speaker 1: like shooting fireworks off and stuff. I was like, I
- 19:43Speaker 1: don't know, sixth grade, but no, I got like third
- 19:47Speaker 1: I got the thirty things signed by t I got
- 19:49Speaker 1: underwear signed by TiO. Anything you could think of, TiO
- 19:52Speaker 1: signed it that day. Wait, you took off your underwear
- 19:55Speaker 1: and had t o sign it and my socks everything.
- 19:58Speaker 1: I literally had him signed every single Imagine the store
- 20:01Speaker 1: if you had funnel cakes signed by to you, were
- 20:05Speaker 1: you walking around the neighborhood naked? Do people not do that?
- 20:10Speaker 1: Well done, Dave. The most infamous punch in NBA history
- 20:14Speaker 1: landed during the ninety seven Lakers Rockets game when Kermit
- 20:18Speaker 1: Washington nearly killed this five time All Star, who made
- 20:22Speaker 1: a full recovery before becoming the only coach not named
- 20:25Speaker 1: Phil Jackson to win back to back championships in the nineties.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Rudy tom Janovic and we had nonbelievers all along the way.
- 20:36Speaker 1: I have one thing to say, those nonbelievers don't ever
- 20:40Speaker 1: under estimate the heart of a champion. Very well done,
- 20:45Speaker 1: Dave Fleming prompt time. Professional sports leagues are jam packed
- 20:49Speaker 1: with world class athletes who can absolutely destroy each of
- 20:52Speaker 1: you in the fight. But let's not count you out
- 20:55Speaker 1: just yet. Sell me on a pro athlete in any
- 20:58Speaker 1: league that you could possibly be in a fight. For example,
- 21:01Speaker 1: after months toning up on my peloton, I could probably
- 21:06Speaker 1: take down one of the older bowlers on the PBA tour.
- 21:09Speaker 1: I will tell you Dave remembers this one of the
- 21:12Speaker 1: crowning moments of my career Sports Illustrated is when I
- 21:17Speaker 1: covered the Johnny Petragolia Open in Brunswick, New Jersey, and
- 21:21Speaker 1: then got the entire story killed and you had to leave.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Are we did this corporate boondoggle in Orlando? That was
- 21:31Speaker 1: like they took the whole staff to a resort in
- 21:33Speaker 1: Orlando shut down, like Universal Studios for US and Jed
- 21:37Speaker 1: had to leave early to go cover bowling. I had
- 21:41Speaker 1: to leave early to go cover bowling. But it wasn't
- 21:43Speaker 1: like I didn't like. I left ten hours early. And
- 21:46Speaker 1: so the last day of the trip on a Friday,
- 21:50Speaker 1: instead of leaving at a normal time like two in
- 21:53Speaker 1: the afternoon, I had to leave at five am. I
- 21:55Speaker 1: was sharing a room with Dave Fleming, who I went
- 21:57Speaker 1: to bed, maybe it like two or three that night.
- 22:01Speaker 1: An hour later, Dave comes in as the sun is
- 22:05Speaker 1: rising and I'm about to get up to get my flight.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Dave comes in. He's so drunk, he's you know, toddling
- 22:12Speaker 1: around the room, and then I just hear this big
- 22:14Speaker 1: thud and then I hear Dave get up and he goes. Uh.
- 22:19Speaker 1: I missed the bed I think of the feeling. It's
- 22:23Speaker 1: pitch black. You think you know where the bed is,
- 22:26Speaker 1: and you're like, I'm gonna do the most awesome I'm
- 22:28Speaker 1: gonna sprint and do like a superman dive into bed
- 22:31Speaker 1: and it's gonna be awesome. And then somewhere in mid
- 22:34Speaker 1: air you realize your trajectory is off and you've missed
- 22:39Speaker 1: the bed completely and you hit the wall of the
- 22:42Speaker 1: hotel room. And then just go night night right there
- 22:45Speaker 1: and then and you and you woke me up. But
- 22:47Speaker 1: it's it's a story that's persevered, all right, Dave, you
- 22:50Speaker 1: get to go first, name someone you can beat up
- 22:53Speaker 1: in a fight. Honestly, it's not just one person. Just
- 22:57Speaker 1: pick any professional soccer team. I will whoop all their asses.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Just pick a team, send me there on a plane.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I'll just walk into practice and just start kicking everyone's
- 23:07Speaker 1: ass because honestly, if you touch one of them right there,
- 23:09Speaker 1: gonna fall down and start crying, almost like if they
- 23:12Speaker 1: were drunk and missed the bed. Michael, Michael, your answer.
- 23:16Speaker 1: So for this one, Um, I was inspired by the
- 23:20Speaker 1: Floyd Mayweather logan pull fight, Big Floyd guy. I'm excited
- 23:23Speaker 1: for him, absolutely crushed but I'm also inspired by the
- 23:25Speaker 1: way the Paul brothers have market at this because they
- 23:28Speaker 1: give people fights where it seems like, you know, I
- 23:30Speaker 1: will lose besides Logan, who will lose? Um, So I
- 23:33Speaker 1: want to give people a good fight. So I'm thinking
- 23:35Speaker 1: about nineteen year old NBA rookie Alexey Polkaschewski, a big
- 23:41Speaker 1: NBA twitter you know, draft nerds love them. So this
- 23:44Speaker 1: got seven ft tall, So obviously it's like, Michael, what
- 23:47Speaker 1: are you thinking? Guys a seven ft three wingspan, he's nineteen,
- 23:50Speaker 1: It's like, I'm done. But on his best day, like
- 23:53Speaker 1: after a full Thanksgiving meal, soaking wet, a buck ninety
- 23:57Speaker 1: maybe maybe, And this is a seven and foot or
- 24:00Speaker 1: we're talking about, so um, I would take him on.
- 24:03Speaker 1: It would be a sanctioned boxing match, and I think
- 24:05Speaker 1: obviously he's got the reach. So the whole fight is
- 24:07Speaker 1: maybe like six rounds of me trying to get inside.
- 24:10Speaker 1: But once I get that inside position, guys body shots
- 24:13Speaker 1: on a guy that skinny, like, come on a hundred
- 24:15Speaker 1: and nineties seven feet So I think I think I
- 24:17Speaker 1: got a chance. I'll probably lose because again he has
- 24:20Speaker 1: a seven foot three wings man, But I wanted a
- 24:22Speaker 1: fight that's half entertaining and half like maybe I would
- 24:25Speaker 1: not just somebody I can, you know, beat up easily.
- 24:27Speaker 1: So that is such a good creative answer and also
- 24:31Speaker 1: incredibly spot on, Simon. I have zero chance to win,
- 24:34Speaker 1: so evil, But this is what you wanted, chat. You
- 24:37Speaker 1: asked for me to beat up someone that's a pro athlete.
- 24:40Speaker 1: So I found a guy who's the best bone arrow
- 24:42Speaker 1: shooter in the entire world. But he has no arms.
- 24:45Speaker 1: He shoots with his feet. So if I'm gonna fight
- 24:48Speaker 1: someone that I'm gonna win in a fight, I know
- 24:49Speaker 1: it's horrible, but this is the guy I will be
- 24:52Speaker 1: able to beat because I don't think I can beat
- 24:54Speaker 1: any real pro athletes. I don't think I'm gonna get
- 24:56Speaker 1: enough shape, so I have to take it where I
- 24:58Speaker 1: can get it. And uh, I has purchased that one
- 25:00Speaker 1: way to get the help for answering this question. Oh
- 25:03Speaker 1: my god, uh karate kick you in the face. I
- 25:08Speaker 1: gotta give it to Michael again. He's like dominating right now.
- 25:11Speaker 1: I honestly feel like I should give half of the
- 25:13Speaker 1: point to Simon, Like he went out on a limb. There.
- 25:16Speaker 1: That's a that's a spicy answer, but I do. I'll
- 25:19Speaker 1: take the point, but I just I want to give
- 25:21Speaker 1: some props to Signmon. I was like, WHOA, that's I
- 25:23Speaker 1: didn't think about that. That's a good one. That's good.
- 25:25Speaker 1: I'm dark. I'm dark. He's in he's in a bad place,
- 25:28Speaker 1: all right. Right Now, here's the score. Dave, you have
- 25:32Speaker 1: one point, Michael, you have five points. Simon you have
- 25:35Speaker 1: three points. Well done, Part three. Here we go. You're
- 25:38Speaker 1: in it to win it. You're in the one and
- 25:42Speaker 1: forty six running of the Preaknesses this weekend. But people
- 25:44Speaker 1: are talking about the second leg of the Triple Crown
- 25:46Speaker 1: for all the wrong reasons after a failed Kentucky Derby
- 25:50Speaker 1: drug test has gamblers and racing fans fuming. But before
- 25:54Speaker 1: we dive into that, let's remember some of the most
- 25:58Speaker 1: memorable drug tests in sports history. Michael. In two thousand seventeen,
- 26:02Speaker 1: Jets wide receiver Jeremy Curly received a four game suspension
- 26:06Speaker 1: for performance enhancing drugs. Curly denied knowingly taking any substance
- 26:11Speaker 1: and then blamed it on ghosts, saying there are a
- 26:13Speaker 1: lot of ghosts around here. Ghosts put it in there,
- 26:16Speaker 1: you know, the ghost of Christmas past, along with Ebenezer Scrooge,
- 26:21Speaker 1: the Ghost of Christmas Past, is a character in this
- 26:23Speaker 1: beloved eighteen forty three Charles Dickens book, which has been
- 26:27Speaker 1: adapted into several holiday films of the same name. What
- 26:31Speaker 1: is the book? Oh wow? This is the first one
- 26:34Speaker 1: where I'm like, all right, I'm just gonna think and
- 26:36Speaker 1: fire one out because I feel like I do know this,
- 26:38Speaker 1: but off the top I don't. So is it a
- 26:42Speaker 1: Christmas story? So close? A Christmas Carol? Christmas Story? One
- 26:49Speaker 1: of the most legendary films are from Mine and Dave Generation,
- 26:54Speaker 1: in which a young boy gets his tongue stuck on
- 26:57Speaker 1: a frozen pole, not quite Dickenzie in but also not
- 27:03Speaker 1: written by Earl Campbell Dave. In two thousand and ten,
- 27:06Speaker 1: Olympic gold medalist Leshawn Merritt avoided a career threatening suspension
- 27:10Speaker 1: by approving his failed drug test came from Extends, a
- 27:15Speaker 1: sexual enhancement pill he purchased from a seven eleven near
- 27:18Speaker 1: his house before Extends paid six million to settle a
- 27:21Speaker 1: false advertisement lawsuit. Their most famous pitchman had been this
- 27:26Speaker 1: famous football coach, known for winning a Super Bowl in
- 27:30Speaker 1: Dallas and the National Championship in Miami based on the
- 27:35Speaker 1: product that he was endorsing, the appropriately named Jimmy Johnson.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I'm Jimmy Johnson and I recently became the spokesperson for Extends,
- 27:44Speaker 1: the number one million enhancement tablet. Most men want to
- 27:47Speaker 1: perform the best they can and just about everything. Isn't
- 27:50Speaker 1: that why we buy the biggest and best of everything.
- 27:53Speaker 1: I say, go along with Extance. Do wow? Nice piece
- 28:00Speaker 1: of a double Simon. In two thousand nine, Frenchman Richard
- 28:06Speaker 1: Gaskett famously and maybe it's guess Gay, famously avoided a
- 28:11Speaker 1: two year suspension after convincing an independent anti doping tribunal
- 28:16Speaker 1: the trace amount of cocaine in his system was from
- 28:18Speaker 1: the mouth of a girl he made out with at
- 28:20Speaker 1: a concert the previous evening after he'd withdrawn from an
- 28:25Speaker 1: injury in the Sony ericson Open in this sport open?
- 28:32Speaker 1: Uh so either tennis or golf. I'll go tennis, correct?
- 28:38Speaker 1: That is one I wish I had used back in
- 28:41Speaker 1: the day. All right, Part three? You have to kiss
- 28:45Speaker 1: a girl first, Chad to make it legitimate. Oh see,
- 28:50Speaker 1: So glad we invited Dave on this podcast. Here we go.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Here's your prompt in defense of his horse Medina Spirit.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Bob Efford said the Kentucky Derby winners failed drug desk
- 28:59Speaker 1: could be you to eating hay soaked with incriminating urine
- 29:04Speaker 1: from another horse. In the colorful history of failed drug tests,
- 29:07Speaker 1: it's one of the most original and inspiring excuses of
- 29:10Speaker 1: all time. Now imagine you failed the drug test due
- 29:13Speaker 1: to a banned substance of your choosing. Please give me
- 29:16Speaker 1: your most original, outlandish, and at least quasi plausible excuse
- 29:20Speaker 1: for the failed test and clear your good name, Michael
- 29:26Speaker 1: your first I will just say, on a random note,
- 29:29Speaker 1: I do want to give a shout out to Bob
- 29:31Speaker 1: Bafford for giving me more interest in horse racing than
- 29:33Speaker 1: I've ever had in my adult life. So I do
- 29:35Speaker 1: appreciate that we always need a super villain. The best
- 29:38Speaker 1: I could think of is, I'm a huge caffeine guy,
- 29:41Speaker 1: huge caffeine addict. I want to be amped in preparation
- 29:45Speaker 1: for the charge competition. In my big fight with NBA
- 29:47Speaker 1: rookie Alexei Polkaschewski um so, I probably would be pounding
- 29:50Speaker 1: a ton of red bull um And in that case,
- 29:53Speaker 1: they just came out with a new dragon fruit flavor.
- 29:56Speaker 1: While my doctor does recommend that I get more serious
- 29:58Speaker 1: as I get older about read labels, um, it isn't
- 30:01Speaker 1: something I do. So when I do test positive, you know,
- 30:04Speaker 1: for human growth hormone or for a steroid of some sort,
- 30:07Speaker 1: which is inevitable, it will be because Red Bull's new flavor.
- 30:11Speaker 1: So I'd be like, you know, that's something you've got
- 30:13Speaker 1: to take up with Dietrich, Mata ships and Coca Cola.
- 30:15Speaker 1: And if you nullify, you know, my test results, you're
- 30:18Speaker 1: insulting Red Bull, one of our biggest sponsors, along with,
- 30:21Speaker 1: you know, the the Grace of the Olympics. So I
- 30:25Speaker 1: would definitely just go with the my energy drink and
- 30:27Speaker 1: my trainer gave me an unknown supplement. Excuse you, guys,
- 30:31Speaker 1: I gotta say, even though he just said in his
- 30:34Speaker 1: entire adult life and he's basically been an adult for
- 30:37Speaker 1: about ten minutes, Michael is bringing some serious, serious creativity.
- 30:43Speaker 1: A little worried about how much he's living in his head,
- 30:46Speaker 1: but for this game, it's incredibly valuable. Simon, you're up next.
- 30:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna see listen from someone actually know. Basically, people
- 30:53Speaker 1: buy shampoo that is supposed to help them read like
- 30:56Speaker 1: grow hair and get thicker hair, and there are some
- 30:59Speaker 1: steroids in it, so he took He used it knowing
- 31:02Speaker 1: that if he popped the test in college for sports,
- 31:04Speaker 1: he could just show that it was because of the shampoo,
- 31:06Speaker 1: not because he was actually juicing. So it actually worked.
- 31:09Speaker 1: He got away with it for two different years in college,
- 31:11Speaker 1: flaming his shampoo anytime you'd fail a test. Wow, that's
- 31:15Speaker 1: pretty good too, and that's like practical real world advice.
- 31:19Speaker 1: All right, Dave, Mr Funning, we've been informed that you
- 31:23Speaker 1: have tested positive for cocaine, mushrooms, viagra, propecia, and steroids.
- 31:29Speaker 1: How do you plead? Look, man, I was at the
- 31:34Speaker 1: corporate party. Simon brought some funnel cakes. I just ate
- 31:38Speaker 1: one funnel cake app but I didn't check to see
- 31:41Speaker 1: what was in it. So it's not my fault. Dave wins.
- 31:50Speaker 1: It's just too good because I swear to God, I
- 31:53Speaker 1: feel like I've had that conversation with him before, so
- 31:56Speaker 1: it totally feels like something that he should get points for. Um,
- 32:01Speaker 1: here we go. We are heading into the final round.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Michael Walton probably deserves to win the last round, but
- 32:07Speaker 1: he didn't. He's got five points. Simon, you've got four points,
- 32:10Speaker 1: Dave Grand grand Entry. At the end, you've got three points.
- 32:16Speaker 1: So the topic for the final round the hunter versus
- 32:19Speaker 1: the hunted. First, you each have to say how much
- 32:24Speaker 1: you want to risk. So first, close your eyes, hold
- 32:28Speaker 1: up your fingers with your wager amount. Okay. As the
- 32:33Speaker 1: NBA Playoffs play and tournament looms, the Golden State Warriors
- 32:36Speaker 1: are in an unfamiliar position. They're no longer the class
- 32:39Speaker 1: of the NBA and instead will be a plucky under dug.
- 32:42Speaker 1: As Draymond Green puts it, we were the hunters, then
- 32:46Speaker 1: we turned into the hunted, and now we're hunting again.
- 32:49Speaker 1: But fourteen years ago, the Warriors proved their skill as
- 32:52Speaker 1: big game hunters. In the two thousand seven playoffs. They
- 32:55Speaker 1: shot the basketball world by taking down the top seed
- 32:57Speaker 1: of Dallas Mavericks, one of only three eight seeds ever
- 33:00Speaker 1: to do so. The two thousand seven Warriors team was
- 33:03Speaker 1: led by Baron Davis and Monte Ellis and was coached
- 33:06Speaker 1: by the beloved Don Nelson. Their general manager was a
- 33:09Speaker 1: Brooklyn native and five time NBA All Star. Within five
- 33:13Speaker 1: years of this upset, the Warriors wouldn't renew his contract
- 33:17Speaker 1: as GM, he'd be inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame,
- 33:21Speaker 1: and then the Warriors would retire his jersey number. Who
- 33:24Speaker 1: was the GM of the two thousand seven Golden State Warriors,
- 33:50Speaker 1: Dave Fleming. Your first good thing. I didn't wager all
- 33:54Speaker 1: my points, no idea, no idea. How many points did
- 33:58Speaker 1: you wager? All three? All three points on no idea?
- 34:03Speaker 1: So you are down to zero? Well, the good news
- 34:05Speaker 1: is I guarantee you Simon Hunter doesn't know the answer,
- 34:09Speaker 1: and he also waged all of his points. I'm at
- 34:14Speaker 1: zero points. I I I said, Jerry West, but I
- 34:17Speaker 1: know that's the wrong answer. It is the wrong answer. Michael,
- 34:21Speaker 1: you probably deserve to win the game. Trying to be
- 34:23Speaker 1: a little conservative, I don't think I did all my points. Now,
- 34:25Speaker 1: if this is your chance, if you even if you
- 34:27Speaker 1: got it wrong and you didn't bet all your points,
- 34:30Speaker 1: you win the game. How many points did you wager?
- 34:32Speaker 1: So I waged nose two points, two points? And your
- 34:36Speaker 1: answer is al adults, wasn't my best guess? You guys
- 34:41Speaker 1: are all terrible. It's Chris Mullen. Chris Mullen, dream teamer,
- 34:46Speaker 1: like one of the greatest college players ever. The funniest
- 34:49Speaker 1: thing is it was right there in my face. And
- 34:51Speaker 1: I think of him as a Saint John, like former St.
- 34:54Speaker 1: John's basketball coach, so it didn't even cross my mind.
- 34:57Speaker 1: You know, I was like, really, I forgot about that. Well, listen,
- 35:00Speaker 1: Michael Walton, the youngest of the crew, the most creative
- 35:05Speaker 1: of the crew. You brought so much thinking to the game.
- 35:09Speaker 1: You really went deep. We're gonna have to talk about
- 35:11Speaker 1: how you're spending your time. Uh, you are the winner
- 35:15Speaker 1: of the Thursday thunder Domes. I appreciate it. I would
- 35:21Speaker 1: like to give this time to just quick shout out
- 35:23Speaker 1: to Patrick Williams. Uh, humble kid. Anyone who in their
- 35:27Speaker 1: rookie year in the league can navigate a jersey number
- 35:30Speaker 1: change gracefully as he did, I gotta give them a
- 35:32Speaker 1: shout out. So Dave Fleming, you are a class act, buddy.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Thanks for coming on our podcast. My pleasure, and next time,
- 35:39Speaker 1: maybe give me eight minutes to prepare. We had a
- 35:43Speaker 1: guest blow us off. I called Dave about fifteen minutes
- 35:47Speaker 1: before the podcast started and said, I'm looking for someone
- 35:51Speaker 1: charming and funny and quick witted, and everyone else is booked.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Can you come on the podcast? You know what I'm
- 36:00Speaker 1: so mad, I'm gonna go look for a soccer team
- 36:02Speaker 1: to beat up. Meanwhile, Simon is probably just gonna go
- 36:06Speaker 1: drown his sorrows and funnel cake. Simon Hunter, We're wishing
- 36:09Speaker 1: you the best on your date tonight. Before we go,
- 36:13Speaker 1: here's a word from our fearless leader, Action Network CEO,
- 36:16Speaker 1: Patrick Keene. It's so hard for me to sit back
- 36:20Speaker 1: here looking at a guy on here, how on Monday,
- 36:24Speaker 1: when last year I spent more money on spill liquor
- 36:29Speaker 1: and far from one side of this world to the
- 36:31Speaker 1: other than you made. You talking to the wheel and
- 36:36Speaker 1: dealing lets in jet flag siddle a gun, and I'm
- 36:40Speaker 1: running a hard time hold these alligat shock. All right,
- 36:45Speaker 1: this has been the favorites from the Volume podcast Network.
