- 0:16All right, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon.
- 0:19On a Tuesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network headquartered out
- 0:25of Des Moines sports station One O 6.3, KX and all.
- 0:27But wherever you are listening in the state of Iowa, we are
- 0:30grateful that you're doing so. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:33program today, along with Trent Condon and myself, we will start
- 0:37talking college football. Buckle up, we're going to talk a
- 0:40lot of college football in the next 5 months.
- 0:42Isn't that priceless? It really is Bill Bender
- 0:46Sporting News will kick things off coming up here at about
- 0:4812:25. Mitch Holtis in his daily spot
- 0:53Chief Daily Chiefs training camp reports that brought to us by
- 0:56Papa John's throughout the state of Iowa but headquarters here in
- 1:00Johnston with the Donaldsons. Mitch Holtis will join us at
- 1:0312:45-ish. Starting off our number 2.
- 1:07Someone we've never spoken to before and I don't think someone
- 1:10we've ever kind of put the spotlight on a team wise
- 1:12anyways. And that's those never to be
- 1:15using again. Milwaukee Brewers, we found a
- 1:18guy from the lockdown network, Chuck Fryland, I believe is how
- 1:20we pronounce his name, but he's going to join us coming up at
- 1:231:00. We are a week away from what, at
- 1:28least on the surface, last week promised to be a pretty good
- 1:30Series 5 game in between the Brewers and the Cubs and the
- 1:34ramifications, etcetera. They may not mean too much, but
- 1:37we'll talk to Chuck Fryland about those brew crews.
- 1:40They went again last night dispatching of the Pirates and
- 1:44then we are going. I went to catch up with Bill
- 1:46Seals. He was busy yesterday, unable to
- 1:48join Trent due to media availabilities with a couple of
- 1:51the assistant coaches. So Iowa State conversation
- 1:54coming up here with Bill Seals at about 1:30.
- 1:57Trent will make some plays of the day before we move on over
- 2:01for off the bench. Trent's plays of the day, Circus
- 2:03sports sponsor those and that'll be about 1:50 or so.
- 2:07Good to see you. How are you?
- 2:08How was the weekend? A lot of Iowa football
- 2:11conversation, at least on X with the kids, practice Saturday,
- 2:16media day on Friday, and of course the Big 10 Network was in
- 2:19town. Jake Butt etcetera was in town
- 2:23on and yesterday and Big 10 Network put it all together,
- 2:27packaged it all up and put it on the air last night at 7:00.
- 2:31It was a lot. You go back to media day,
- 2:34everything you get out of there, and then it becomes old news
- 2:37because then you have your one glimpse you.
- 2:39Get to see them in person. Right.
- 2:40And then you get to last night and you take those little
- 2:44glimpses that you had and you kind of take it further.
- 2:46But you also know that it's kind of cut up and you know it's it's
- 2:49delayed from what, 10 hours beforehand when they're actually
- 2:52practicing to before you get to see it and they kind of slice it
- 2:55and dice it. So it's a ton of information,
- 2:57but that's a good thing. We get a ton of information
- 3:00because our neighbors to the north.
- 3:01Give us absolutely nothing. Is speculative now.
- 3:04Some assistant coaches have been available.
- 3:06You know what? Let me tap the brakes.
- 3:07Fairpoint. Right Fairpoint.
- 3:09They've been giving us that which is.
- 3:10Good because not good enough, but good we're.
- 3:13Walking through the desert looking for any kind of drink.
- 3:15Can we get a little bit? But at this point, what would
- 3:20opening up a practice, even not an open kids day practice like
- 3:23Iowa does? But you know, Lucas mentioned
- 3:26this yesterday. Just allow for an hour, media
- 3:30members to come in and take some notes and get a glimpse.
- 3:34Mm hmm. Now as we're getting closer to
- 3:35the beginning of their season, obviously it's too tight, but
- 3:37right, He could have done that a week ago.
- 3:39Yes, they could have is the answer.
- 3:40They could have, yeah. What is the reason that you?
- 3:43Don't, though. He's paranoid.
- 3:46He thinks it's an edge. It has to be.
- 3:48I I can't figure it out. There's no other reason.
- 3:49Mm. Hmm.
- 3:50Other than the fact that he believes that this gives his
- 3:52team an edge. That that has to be.
- 3:54It drives me nuts. Yeah, As we've been saying it
- 3:57for years, since he got there, he's not going to change his.
- 3:59What do they change? What's the expression, spots,
- 4:01stripes, whatever it is, that's the way he's going to do
- 4:03business. I'm, I'm telling you, I'm
- 4:05halfway convinced myself there when, if there ever comes a time
- 4:08when the Big 12 has to put out an availability report.
- 4:11He'll quit. I don't think he'll quit.
- 4:14He'll wake up. He'll wake.
- 4:15Up in the middle of the night in a deep sweat.
- 4:18Oh goodness, we're going to let them know who's injured, right?
- 4:22No, what's injured just I mean this is how he is look and how
- 4:25can he knock the. Success oh absolutely right
- 4:27winning his coaching program history it's not even close no
- 4:32it's it brings me back to and both Hawkeye fans and cyclone
- 4:36fans neither side wants to admit it but it's absolutely true Kirk
- 4:40Ference and Matt cable they're the same guy they're just have a
- 4:4325 year age difference this they're the.
- 4:45Same back, yes. This was Kirk Ference 25.
- 4:48Do you remember when the spring game started to go away?
- 4:51Yes, and it turned into to just a practice that people freaked
- 4:56out. They lost their how could you do
- 4:58this right? And that's what Kirk was 25
- 5:02years ago and he's a got older also solidified a little bit
- 5:05more. And those contracts keep coming
- 5:07year after year after year. I'm sure it's easier to open
- 5:10things up when you hit that level of success.
- 5:12And maybe in another 10 years. We're talking about Matt
- 5:14Campbell in a different way, I hope, as he.
- 5:17Gets you will be, but I hope, I hope you're able to do that.
- 5:19Deeper into his career that it is different, but Hawkeye fans,
- 5:24Cyclone fans, they're the same guy.
- 5:26They are, in a lot of ways they're the same guy and it's
- 5:28not lost on, at least it's not lost on me.
- 5:31What could happen, By the way, on September the 6th, Iowa State
- 5:34will be on September the 6th, they'll be playing their third.
- 5:37Game of the Year dumb. What's the rush, right, let's
- 5:41say I mean, I know that ultimately we're going to get to
- 5:43know Thanksgiving and they're they're all going to play the
- 5:45same, but no man. So and it it kind of struck me
- 5:49watching the Big 10 network special last night that Iowa
- 5:52wins week one. Got to believe they're going to
- 5:55he'll be tied with Woody Ace and Iowa and Week 2.
- 5:58Their opponent just happens to be those Iowa State Cyclones
- 6:01where Kirk Ference could set the record for the most all time
- 6:04wins as a coach of a Big 10 school.
- 6:07Phenomenal. Just the way that it may or may
- 6:09not turn out. But we're going to see and
- 6:13obviously as we're getting closer and closer and closer.
- 6:16So I don't know what school you want to talk about first.
- 6:18Obviously, I, I guess probably I would because they're state of
- 6:22and you know, just one other thing about that, about the, the
- 6:24media coverage. This is why I go out of my way
- 6:26to thank TJ Alsenberger on the air.
- 6:29And I don't know if it gets back to him or not.
- 6:31I want to believe that somebody, you know, whispers in his ear
- 6:34just how grateful that all the media is for him doing this in
- 6:38the summer months and because he's made a steam available,
- 6:42freshman or not, that's another thing that you'll never see
- 6:45happen with the football program.
- 6:47But anyways, again, how can you knock the success that they've
- 6:50had? We'll see what happens this year
- 6:52with both schools, but I'm 100% in agreement with you.
- 6:55They're the same guy in a lot of ways.
- 6:59It it's just true and we'll see how things work now.
- 7:01I don't think her parents will be talking.
- 7:03I'll be coaching in in 10 years probably though, right?
- 7:06He looks good. He absolutely does.
- 7:08You know, moving around, couple of hip surgeries.
- 7:11We found that out in Vegas that he's something that was under
- 7:14the radar that we didn't know. But yeah, he's getting around.
- 7:16He's still hollering and you hear many of the same things
- 7:19that are still coming out of him and going back to last night and
- 7:23the show from BTN. Now we know there's going to be
- 7:26a certain they're not going to go in to a Big 10 program, say
- 7:29this team is awful. Sure it's not going to happen,
- 7:33right? It is going to be looking at
- 7:35the. Positive, you know what?
- 7:36And if you want to see how they do that, how they put lipstick
- 7:38on that pig, watch the special on the brass.
- 7:40I mean, Wisconsin tonight because how they're going to
- 7:43paint a a rosy picture about these Badgers that I want to
- 7:47see. Well, I think they're going to
- 7:49be much better than they were a year ago.
- 7:50It's just not going to show up because the schedule is that
- 7:54difficult. Take a look at the Maryland one.
- 7:56Try to find that one or take a look at Purdue or Northwestern.
- 7:59Those are the ones that you really are digging because I
- 8:01think. Wisconsin's scene is one of
- 8:03those upper, especially when you have the two divisions right.
- 8:08Anyways, look, my take away, Trent, and it's been my take
- 8:11away since going back to Friday. Every time I hear or read
- 8:14something, that's that the media is writing about or the coaches
- 8:18are talking about this Nathan McNeil, this freshman running
- 8:21backs going to play, isn't he? I think he is, but then you get
- 8:24back into where do the carries come from now, The new rules of
- 8:28the rester. Said by committee.
- 8:30By committee, but even with by committee.
- 8:32This is a big committee. How many?
- 8:34Carries is your 4th running back going to get?
- 8:37Or is he 4? Is he 4?
- 8:39So Bolton's hurt. He's got a hamstring injury.
- 8:42And and what's the prognosis there?
- 8:43Is there any kind of Intel around that?
- 8:45There is not. It is wild speculation all over
- 8:48the place. The belief is though, remember
- 8:51Kamara Milton was the. Starter here, I do remember.
- 8:53He averaged 5 1/2 yards of carry last year.
- 8:56This guy is a very talented running back and the guy they
- 8:58thought was going to be Caleb Johnson was a season to go.
- 9:02You know, that's one thing Ferren said, too.
- 9:03There's always one of those guys.
- 9:04There's always one of those Caleb Johnson.
- 9:06We're not expecting that. And they need that story, and
- 9:09that's how we put it yesterday on the program.
- 9:12So you go next to Jessamne Patterson's the guy that I just,
- 9:16I wonder about. He's fine.
- 9:19He's a nice solid veteran backup.
- 9:21But I think we see what he is. He doesn't have certainly the
- 9:25ceiling that I think McNeil has. He doesn't have the speed that
- 9:30Dahl has. He doesn't have the size that
- 9:31Xavier Williams has. When we're talking about those
- 9:33young running backs, I don't think that if an injury hits, if
- 9:36Bolton's not able to go, that they're going to rely on Jazzy
- 9:39on Patterson for 25 carries a game.
- 9:41You know the first couple of times out he is what he is.
- 9:45You get to TJ Washington. And is he nicked up a little bit
- 9:47too? He also is, but they love him.
- 9:50Speaking of guys that they love, I mean, this is a guy last year
- 9:52they moved him over to the slot wide receiver kind of position.
- 9:55They moved him back over running back.
- 9:57But they have tried to find different ways to get him
- 9:59involved and they really like him.
- 10:01So I just come back to in a season, unless injuries hit and
- 10:05they've already hit in a certain way.
- 10:08Does it make more sense with Nathan McNeill?
- 10:10Try to keep him at that four-game minimum.
- 10:12And then then playing the bowl game.
- 10:14But then here's the other part. In today's environment, does
- 10:17that even make sense to do anymore?
- 10:18He might. Go anywhere.
- 10:19He might go somewhere. He's from the South, too, and he
- 10:22goes out there and he's a kid, right?
- 10:23Yeah. You play four games and.
- 10:26Your tapes out there. He's averaging 5 1/2 of the
- 10:28carry employee. I think we all miss, however,
- 10:31we're Auburn, we're going to drop a bag.
- 10:33We're all miss and we need to run whoever it is and kind of
- 10:38goes both ways. So either all in or all how?
- 10:40No, you know what? You have to change the way you
- 10:42do business trade because the of college football.
- 10:44You never mentioned your buddy, your buddy's son, Brevin Dahl.
- 10:47Dahl's got speed. Does he?
- 10:48Oh yeah. And how's he doing?
- 10:50He's healthy, back healthy. He's up 12 lbs.
- 10:53The speed is definitely still. There, I was disappointed when
- 10:56Lester was listing off some of his running backs and he had to
- 10:58fail to mention Mr. Dahl. Yeah, what's?
- 10:59Going on here, he got six of them.
- 11:01I know that's what you got, yeah.
- 11:03And I'm sure it was just a brain cramp but I was waiting to hear
- 11:06his name. But.
- 11:06It's down the pecking order and that's the reality that they're
- 11:09going through here. So yeah, you're right though,
- 11:11McNeil, he keeps coming up. He came up three straight days
- 11:14and he did. The other thing, it seems like
- 11:17Jackson Stratton's nowhere near the the the Hunt and Heklinski
- 11:22and Hank Brown are getting a lot of chatter as far as who's going
- 11:25to win that job. And they mentioned that Hank
- 11:28Brown was the only one of the quarterbacks that was there.
- 11:30Well, where was Stratton? He would have been there in the
- 11:32spring. Was he hurt?
- 11:34I think he was well. Because because Lester said the
- 11:36only quarterback we had this spring that's on the rosters,
- 11:39Hank Brown. Well, hang on a second.
- 11:40Jackson Stratton was there. Now Stratton was late getting
- 11:44back in, so I don't know if it was an injury from spring, OK,
- 11:46Because I heard he's playing a little bit of catch up himself
- 11:49and he hasn't been available. But Haklinski and Brown are
- 11:52clearly the two that are going to battle for that number two
- 11:54spot. And they both have upside I.
- 11:56Was going to say they both throw a really pretty ball.
- 11:59Hecklinski got that Drew Tate in him.
- 12:01He's little mocks. He's my guy.
- 12:02Yes, And then Hank Brown. Well, here's a problem.
- 12:05Hank Browns got that ball that whizzes through the air.
- 12:07You can hear it. Now I'm confused.
- 12:09Now, you like them both? Yeah.
- 12:11And I think they like them both. I think Tim Lester likes them.
- 12:13Both. Do they like them well enough
- 12:16that they will? This will not be an area of
- 12:19concern once Mr. Gronowski runs out of eligibility.
- 12:22I believe that's the way that this is.
- 12:24Good that that's a positive. And the way that I was spends in
- 12:27the portal, look, they spend a ton.
- 12:29I'm Mark Gronowski. They spent probably over their
- 12:32skis of what maybe they were hoping to have to do, but that's
- 12:35what they had to do. Well, you look at next season
- 12:38and all of a sudden, if you don't have to worry about
- 12:39quarterback in the portal, what can you do financially in order
- 12:44to augment that roster going into next year?
- 12:47They believe in both of those guys.
- 12:49Hecklinski I think was a huge surprise to just how close he
- 12:52is, but I know Tim Lester loves Hank Brown.
- 12:55You could tell that I know that both Kirk Ference, as we switch
- 12:59to the defensive side of the ball, and Phil Parker and I'm
- 13:02going to have to work on his name because it's a tricky 1.
- 13:05Sharar, Sharar Shire Shire Shire Shire.
- 13:09Carson Shire. Carson Shire, who's waited his
- 13:12turn like they all have, he's seemingly his turn is now and
- 13:17he's taking full advantage of that because the I keep hearing
- 13:20as much as I keep hearing about the freshman running back, I
- 13:22keep hearing about the red shirt, senior linebacker Shire.
- 13:26Now, Carson Shire is a guy that's been around for five
- 13:30years. We've heard about him since he
- 13:31was a freshman, and he's always hurt.
- 13:33Yep. And so that's always the
- 13:35lingering thing. And I threw this out yesterday
- 13:37and I know it. It's a little bit hyperbolic
- 13:40because he's not this guy, but there were some memories with
- 13:45the size he has and yet the speed.
- 13:46I mean, he's a. Big dude is he?
- 13:48Playing that outside spot, I mean he's he's 63225.
- 13:52He looks the part at the outside.
- 13:55He's a lot bigger than Nick Jackson was.
- 13:57You know, you look at some of the some of the recent guys, he
- 13:59reminds me of Greenway and I get it.
- 14:01He's not Chad Greenway. He's not going to be a first
- 14:03round pick yes. That's not he's not going to be
- 14:06a Pro Bowl. That's not what I'm saying it
- 14:08just with the size that he has and the sideline to sideline
- 14:12that we're able to see on Saturday.
- 14:14It's just called Greenway Junior.
- 14:16I'm not saying he's Chad Greenway.
- 14:18Don't don't take it that way. But when you're looking for a
- 14:20cop, it's just that was the first name that popped into my
- 14:23mind when I saw him just flying all over Bacon place.
- 14:27That'll work. You'll take that even if it's a
- 14:29a slipped a different version of that if he's close.
- 14:33Yeah, you're pretty. Good.
- 14:34What did you make of Dinardo and Butt and refs and what they had
- 14:37to say about the team? You know the one interesting
- 14:39part is now it's Jake Button. He's a tight end, right?
- 14:42So. But Friday, not a whole lot on
- 14:46tight ends for media day. Saturday didn't see the tight
- 14:49ends, even in a day that it felt like they were kind of work on
- 14:51the passing game. Estranga's name was all over the
- 14:54show last. Night and then last night we get
- 14:56to last night and it's Addison Estranga and they're talking
- 14:58about Wortworth and they're we've heard about some of these
- 15:00young guys that are maybe starting to pop.
- 15:02What I want to see, maybe the most intriguing part that I
- 15:05don't feel like I have a solid answer.
- 15:08Last year, Luke Lachey had 29 catches.
- 15:11We also know Luke Lachey coming off that injury, he was not the
- 15:13same guy. He was a diminished Luke Lachey
- 15:17a season ago. This is the Packers offense.
- 15:20That's what Tim Luster brought with him.
- 15:22And it is the Lafleur offense, the Shanahan offshoot to
- 15:26Lafleur, and they don't use the tight ends much.
- 15:29Is this the new reality, this new offense that the Titans are
- 15:32of course going to be a part of it and they're still going to do
- 15:352 tight end step sets. But and the chances even in a
- 15:38more pass happy offense that a tight end catches 4550 balls, Is
- 15:44that off the table or was that just what we saw a year ago?
- 15:47And because of Lachey being diminished and quarterback play
- 15:50that that was the reason? That's what I I don't feel like
- 15:53I have a solid answer of what tight end.
- 15:55Do you think the tight end catches were elevated just
- 15:57because the receiver room was so well?
- 15:59I think that was a part of an. Adequate.
- 16:00Yeah, I, I think for a long time in this Iowa program, I mean
- 16:05many. Pieces said as much yesterday.
- 16:07Of the 26 years previous to this one, how many years was the wide
- 16:11receiver room better than the tight end room?
- 16:13234 maybe? Yeah, if that's.
- 16:16Been a long time. The chances that.
- 16:19Well, they've had some dudes at that position where you couldn't
- 16:21help but throw them with. Well they did for some reason
- 16:23didn't utilize Kittle. He had injury problems itself
- 16:26too, and it was kind of a knucklehead early in his career
- 16:29though, was he? Yeah, Oh yeah.
- 16:30And he said as much. He knew that he had to re
- 16:33evaluate his love of football if he was actually going to get on
- 16:36the field and instead of being a knucklehead off of it. #46
- 16:40right, yes. Yeah, Wild him.
- 16:42Jake Doozy. Jake Doozy was the better the
- 16:44players. Well, at the time, yeah, at the
- 16:45time. Doozy before that injury he that
- 16:48run he had against Ohio State putting ketchup in Columbus when
- 16:52they came out in the three tight end set.
- 16:53Up there, I remember that. Hanging around against the
- 16:56Buckeyes where they should have been hanging around against that
- 16:58Ohio State team. No, yeah, but mention how tough
- 17:01it is to play it. Kennick when he came in is with
- 17:04the number 2 ranked team. So we'll see.
- 17:06Obviously it's great to believe that we're talking about that,
- 17:09but hard, not hard to ignore right when they're in the
- 17:11spotlight on Friday, Friday, Saturday and then again on on on
- 17:17Monday. So if you started to broaden
- 17:19your horizon when it comes to any Big 10 or Big 12 schools
- 17:23that you're thinking to yourself, you know, maybe this
- 17:25is the best team or maybe this team is going to win this
- 17:27conference. When it comes to the top spot,
- 17:31not quite. I like I like Utah and a bounce
- 17:34back here. I do too.
- 17:35I think Utah and the Big 12 is going to have a bounce back.
- 17:38You know, I struggle and it pops into my mind because of our
- 17:42conversation with Mike Palm last Friday from Circa.
- 17:45He mentioned we were talking about the K State, Iowa State
- 17:47game, that they continue to get steam on Kansas State, not just
- 17:50in that game, but overall to win the Big 12.
- 17:55You know me in offensive lines. Yeah.
- 17:56Yeah. And they they spent on their
- 17:59offensive line. One of their dudes is hurt.
- 18:02That there was another component where I saw and I, I think it
- 18:06was, I want to say it was one of their tackles, but I just saw a
- 18:08little piece, a little clip on. He was like the 168th ranked
- 18:13tackle from PFFA year ago. So yeah, you went out and you
- 18:16spent, but it wasn't very good last year.
- 18:20And this game early in the season, I wonder about Kansas
- 18:26State where they're going to be with an offensive line play.
- 18:29And, and I keep coming back to that.
- 18:30Now Iowa State has their own questions on the other side of
- 18:33the on their defensive front and outside of Dominic Orange, what
- 18:35they're going to look like there.
- 18:37But when I keep coming back to that, I wonder and I also kind
- 18:40of wonder, is this going to be an under game?
- 18:42You know, is this going to be 16/13/2017?
- 18:46Is something like that, that it's going to look like
- 18:49preseason football in the NFL? It's going to look ugly early.
- 18:52On well, I'm actually see what it's going to look like in the
- 18:54stands because we're hearing 12 to 13,000 Cyclone fans making
- 18:57their way over to that game. K State schedule Iowa State to
- 19:01start tough games. They'll host Texas Tech on the
- 19:051st of November. They'll go to Utah on the 22nd
- 19:10of November. So there's maybe the two
- 19:12toughest games, 3 toughest games when you factor in the close.
- 19:16Anyways, we're going to talk to Bill Bender next.
- 19:18We can do some college football broadening horizons other than
- 19:22Big 10 and Big 12, but we'll do that with Bill Bender.
- 19:25Mitch Holtis Daily Chiefs training camp report coming up
- 19:28at 12:45. It's sponsored by Papa John's
- 19:31here in central Iowa. Look forward to doing that,
- 19:34going to talk some Brewers and some baseball to kick off the
- 19:37second hour of the program. And then Bill Seals who had a
- 19:42media available availability yesterday, but he'll be with us
- 19:46today at about 1:30 to catch this up on Iowa State 1220.
- 19:51Miller and Condon underway on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 20:00Approaching 12/30 on a Tuesday, Still to come this hour, Mitch
- 20:03Holtz is the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 20:06The Daily Chiefs training camp report about 12:45-ish or so,
- 20:10but we can talk college football prior to that.
- 20:12Bill Bender, he covers it for The Sporting News and he is with
- 20:16Trent and I Bill Trenton. Ken, good to speak with you as
- 20:19we enter our way to week #0. I want to start with you.
- 20:22First of all, welcome to the program.
- 20:24Thank you for the heavy lift. When you kind of broke down the
- 20:27accuracy and what the AP polls have meant over the years, just
- 20:31how accurate they are or how many times they miss.
- 20:34Who's the biggest miss usually? How heavy of a lift was that
- 20:38bill? And what did you glean from
- 20:39your, from your own, from your own research?
- 20:43So so I'm late to the party on Ted Lasso.
- 20:45I started watching that a couple weeks ago and the be curious
- 20:50thing has really stuck with me and I was curious how it looked
- 20:53the last five years. You know, what about as close to
- 20:59what we rank them to what actually happened as any school
- 21:03on that list that we looked at. And you know, the finding
- 21:06basically was about 52% of the teams that are ranked now will
- 21:11be ranked at in the end of the season according to the last
- 21:14five years. But they they hit about 58 to
- 21:1760% of the top ten teams. And I've always thought that
- 21:20right, and that we you get the top ten teams right, It's that
- 21:2416 to 25 can be dicey. Yeah, put them in a hat.
- 21:28Yes. And certainly you understand
- 21:30that part of it. Well, that's kind of that group
- 21:32of teams that I'm wondering about, that teams that made the
- 21:35big jump forward a year ago kind of out of nowhere, Illinois,
- 21:39South Carolina, Arizona State, Indiana.
- 21:42Is there a team out of that group that you really like that
- 21:44you believe is going to take what they did a year ago and
- 21:46it's not that they have to be better, but at least can
- 21:48maintain what they built a season ago?
- 21:51Well, well, Trent, I think it's hard to stack up 4 through 9 in
- 21:54the Big 10 right now. And we know the top 3 is going
- 21:57to be Ohio State, Penn State, Oregon.
- 21:59But when you look at Tier 2, where I'm like, is it Illinois,
- 22:04Michigan, USC, Nebraska, Indiana or Iowa, I think that's your,
- 22:10that's hard to sort out because any one of those six teams to
- 22:13me, you could make the case could be that fourth team in the
- 22:16Big 10. Rather it's Michigan with Bryce
- 22:18Underwood seeing a lot of clips now ski out there, you know, the
- 22:22last couple days and does he get that Iowa pass going?
- 22:25It snuck up on me today. I'm doing a 1 to 136 ranking
- 22:29that maybe we can talk about next week.
- 22:31OK. Nebraska plays at Cincinnati
- 22:35Thursday. You know how how's that going to
- 22:38be? That should be a lot of fun.
- 22:39Well, that game's in Kansas City.
- 22:40It's a neutral site, but yes, your points, right, they're
- 22:43going to face each other. It's going to be fascinating.
- 22:45So I want to go back to the poll.
- 22:47The Big 12 has what they get, 3 teams, I think Iowa State, Texas
- 22:51Tech and K State, and then right on the outside of it, others
- 22:54receiving votes. The next three teams are all Big
- 22:5612 schools, BYU, Utah and Baylor.
- 23:00Who's your choice, Bill, to win the Big 12?
- 23:02Have you settled build on a conference pick in your mind
- 23:05when it comes to the Big 12? Well, I mean Arizona State's the
- 23:09easy choice, but man, we had them picked last last year.
- 23:13So it gives me a lot of pause. I do think that Kansas State,
- 23:17Iowa State games are real tone better.
- 23:19You know, the team that wins that game, huge springboard.
- 23:22If you can win that ranked match up, start the season.
- 23:25And I do know that one's in Dublin, Ireland.
- 23:28You know, I think I did get that right.
- 23:31You know, and I think the rest of these Big 12 teams, like you
- 23:34mentioned, Baylor's really interesting sleeper.
- 23:36We've talked about them a little bit on here with Sawyer Roberts
- 23:38and how they closed. Auburn better be careful there
- 23:41because I I, I think that's a game that Baylor absolutely can
- 23:44win. Oklahoma checks in at 18 now you
- 23:48look at what they did recently, you look at their move to the
- 23:51SEC, you look at questions all over the field and a guy on a
- 23:55hot seat. If there anybody else out there
- 23:57in Oklahoma, I don't know if this be the 18th ranked team of
- 23:59the country, but name brand does help out when it comes to these
- 24:02preseasons season rankings. Where are you in the Sooners and
- 24:04your number two in the SEC? Well, I mean the the the latest
- 24:09story on John material. Yeah, that's not regulate.
- 24:12We'll. We'll see where that goes.
- 24:14Oklahoma's obviously looking into it with the Venmo
- 24:17transactions and the allegations.
- 24:19And there's even, I mean, that story's getting bizarre with
- 24:22who's reporting it. So I'm going to just trust
- 24:25Oklahoma to look into it. So Michigan coming down there
- 24:32and Michigan what a non conference game that will be.
- 24:36And I think we'll learn then. But John Mateer on the surface,
- 24:39I mean, he's the guy that has to get this Venable era going.
- 24:42And I think there's a ton of pressure on Oklahoma to not just
- 24:46be good at home. I think you got to look at that
- 24:48in the SCC. We're not just anybody can win
- 24:50at home in that conference. They have really tough home
- 24:52environments. Playing who can get it done on
- 24:54the road in Oklahoma hasn't been doing that.
- 24:57Are you convinced, or maybe I'll phrase it this way, is Arch
- 25:02Manning going to come out after this year?
- 25:04He seemingly with the number one overall pick.
- 25:07The Saints are going to be brutal following grandpa's
- 25:08footsteps dot dot dot. But Peyton went back to
- 25:11Tennessee for his senior year and this was before NIL, at
- 25:14least legal. NIL played the SEC after all.
- 25:18Is is Arch Manning one and done in your mind or do you expect
- 25:21him to have a very difficult back and forth decision and
- 25:24maybe stay for another year? Are you suggesting that FCC
- 25:28players money before the NILI don't know.
- 25:34I don't wink wink right the but Peyton Manning and Eli I think
- 25:42when Archie said Texas or Archie is going to stay at Texas for
- 25:47the next two years. I didn't blink because I think
- 25:49that's what he's going to do I do I think you get the whole
- 25:54college experience and I'll does help and Peyton and Eli Peyton
- 25:58stayed four years. Eli stayed popped.
- 26:00So I think with that, history suggests he's going to be there.
- 26:04And I think when this step out can every quarterback drafted
- 26:09number one since 1998, since Peyton Manning, only two played
- 26:15one year as a starter and that was Cam Newton and Kyler Murray.
- 26:18So to me, that just tells me right there, you might get the
- 26:21best of Arch Manning next year. And I don't know that he can
- 26:25live up to that hype this year, because it's impossible.
- 26:28Speaking of hype, there's always hype.
- 26:30Down in Alabama, though, the hype train has slowed down a
- 26:32little bit. And Caitlin De Boer's second
- 26:34year, Ty Simpson, has been named the quarterback.
- 26:37A gold soldier, right? Stuck around, could have gone
- 26:40other places and been a starter. He sticks her out and waits his
- 26:42turn, and now he's going to get it.
- 26:44Are we sleeping a little bit on Alabama, or is it more than
- 26:48anything, we got to see what Ty Simpson can actually do?
- 26:51No, I'm picturing I'm going through all my scenarios for
- 26:53Week 1 and you know, Trent, one that keeps popping up in my head
- 26:57is and what if Florida State beats Alabama?
- 27:00What am I going to be doing Monday morning?
- 27:02You know, there is so much pressure on killing the Bora
- 27:05this year. I should have said as one of
- 27:07those guys, though, that another thing I could be writing is, and
- 27:11this guy waited his turn because we saw that with Garrett
- 27:14Nussmeyer last year, a guy that waited his turn did very well
- 27:17and I'm still a proponent for that.
- 27:19It's OK in 2025 to develop a little bit and wait your turn.
- 27:24And I think Ty Simpson could be that guy.
- 27:27A lot of pressure there, though at Alabama, especially against
- 27:30Florida State, who I think they're going to be better.
- 27:33I don't think they're going to be two and 10 again.
- 27:35No, it better not be. Speaking of the SEC, have you
- 27:39had time to watch any Given Saturday, the Netflix special?
- 27:43Have you seen any of it, Bill? Well I I have it in the queue.
- 27:47I I've heard seen some of the clips and heard the reviews.
- 27:50I do want to watch it. Like I said I was finishing up
- 27:53Ted Lasso so I'm only like 7 years late on that.
- 27:57But no I I will definitely check it out.
- 28:00I've heard good reviews though. It's phenomenal.
- 28:02It's great. It really is.
- 28:03Yeah. If you like college football,
- 28:05that should be right in your wheelhouse.
- 28:07So give me a a team that maybe not top of mind now, like like a
- 28:13Penn State or Ohio State or, you know, a Georgia.
- 28:16Give me a playoff, a dark horse. A dark horse playoff team in
- 28:19your mind, Bill is who Georgia Tech?
- 28:23OK, that's a good one. Yep, that's.
- 28:25Does that work? Yes.
- 28:26Interesting opener against Colorado and our own Bill Tricia
- 28:32is working on a piece about man, it's a history lesson.
- 28:35But remember they they split the national title in 1990.
- 28:39They did. So Bill's working on a really
- 28:41fascinating piece on that. And then, you know, just the
- 28:44toughness around Brent key. They got Kyle Efford back, they
- 28:47got Hanes King back, they got Hanes back.
- 28:49They their schedules a little bit easier.
- 28:51But I'm wondering and you guys, Purdue has that rap in the big
- 28:5410. Can you be more than like a
- 28:56giant filler? And I think that's what we're
- 28:59going to find out would detect this year.
- 29:02I posed this question yesterday to Scott Dr. Man 2 freshman
- 29:06quarterbacks that we believe is going to get a lot of time this
- 29:08year, CJ Cart, Notre Dame and Bryce Underwood at Michigan.
- 29:12This is only for this year. It's not about the future, it's
- 29:15not about NFL prospects. Nothing like that.
- 29:17For this year only. Who has a better freshman year
- 29:20Cart, Notre Dame or Underwood at Michigan?
- 29:23CJ Carr, I think well, one, he has to win both these guys got
- 29:27to win the job and I think they will.
- 29:29I just think CJ has more skill position receivers around him,
- 29:33you know, and then you have Jeremiah Love.
- 29:35Michigan's running game is going to be good around Justice Haynes
- 29:38and Jordan Marshall. But I just I worry about who's
- 29:41catching the football there. One of these stats I always put
- 29:43out and we did our greatest Michigan players last week.
- 29:46We updated that list. Michigan has not had a first
- 29:49round pick at receiver since Braylon Edwards.
- 29:53Think about that. That's 20 years.
- 29:54Yeah. So I and I do think Notre Dame
- 29:58has them improved. They have a young group of
- 30:00receivers, but I think if CJ wins that job, he's got more
- 30:04around them. And of course, the Michigan tie
- 30:05there being the grandson of Lloyd Carr.
- 30:08I don't know the Michigan pencil like that.
- 30:09No, let me ask you this, Bill, my final thing for you were on
- 30:12assignment last week. You went to West Virginia to see
- 30:15the Mountaineers. Least that's what I came away
- 30:18with from your ex account. What was up there, buddy?
- 30:22Yeah, I got a story coming Monday and, you know, obviously
- 30:24we know what that story is. It's Rich Rodriguez, ACT, West
- 30:28Virginia. What a cool place, though, man,
- 30:30I love college. Oh, it is.
- 30:32And I'm a, you know, I'm a Southeast Ohio kid, but I got to
- 30:35talk to Pat White and some others around that program and,
- 30:39you know, the thing that makes college football special.
- 30:41And I've been to Ames, I've been to Iowa City, you know, they're
- 30:45not NFL market, right? And everything revolves around
- 30:49Morgantown and West Virginia football and Rich Ross, big
- 30:53piece of that. And he's back.
- 30:55And it was fun. And, you know, I'm looking
- 30:57forward to writing that store. I'm going to sit down and do it
- 30:59as soon as I get this one to 136 done.
- 31:02Looking forward to both of them. Bill Bender from the Sporting
- 31:05News. Bill, we'll talk to you next
- 31:06week about 1 to 136. Look forward to that.
- 31:09Thanks for what you do for us, Bill.
- 31:10Have a great week. Thank you.
- 31:11Oh. It's here guys.
- 31:12Thanks so much for having me take.
- 31:13Care Good to talk to you Bill Bender from The Sporting News
- 31:16sportingnews.com does a great job chronicling college
- 31:19football. West Virginia on your bucket
- 31:22list. Do you get to?
- 31:23It's pretty far down right. The likelihood is not high.
- 31:28Is there a Big 12 outpost you'd like to get to?
- 31:32Of yes, BYU. You want to get there.
- 31:35Yes, BYU, I think over Utah, but one of the two.
- 31:39Not Folsom Field and Boulder. Pretty special, no?
- 31:43Not really. OK, All right.
- 31:47Texas Tech? No.
- 31:48No. Baylor No.
- 31:50Nope. K State No, no.
- 31:53Kansas. No, not a whole lot.
- 31:56I've been to Norman. They're no longer a Big 12,
- 31:59right? That was kind of the top of the
- 32:02bucket list for me, but there's not a whole lot there.
- 32:06Been to Arizona State? Yeah, and didn't go very well.
- 32:08Did you go to Arizona too? Did you go to Tucson too?
- 32:10I thought you did. And to both of them, yeah, and
- 32:12both of them did not go very well for Iowa.
- 32:15No, how about, I mean, if you we know you won't leave Ankity, but
- 32:18if I've. Been to Wilson Field, that was
- 32:20really nice. I I had a ball there.
- 32:22I'm going to guess the mountains for you.
- 32:24Yeah, you know what, Probably one of the Utah schools.
- 32:26Yeah, one of the one of the Utah stops.
- 32:28All right, we're going to take the time out.
- 32:29We come back, we're going to be joined by the way, this show.
- 32:32Hey, Otani is just hanging with the wrong people.
- 32:35Is there something here? I mean, should we should we
- 32:38reopen the the whole bookie thing?
- 32:41The The investigation needs to reopen.
- 32:44It's just, it's just that's back-to-back gears.
- 32:46And what Bill was talking about the material, the quarterback
- 32:49for Oklahoma, he apparently sent a Venmo to his, I don't know, is
- 32:54it a bookie? When he was in school, No, no,
- 32:55it was a teammate. A teammate.
- 32:57Allegedly, yeah. And in the, what do they call
- 33:01it? The the where, where you put
- 33:03what the check is for? Yeah.
- 33:05What's that called? There's a, There's a.
- 33:07The you just marked the transaction.
- 33:09What is right? What is for the memo, The memo
- 33:11part of it? Yeah.
- 33:12He actually spelled out sports wagering.
- 33:14Yeah. Sports gambling, Sports
- 33:16gambling. He can't be that dumb.
- 33:17He can't be that dumb. That's exactly what popped into
- 33:20my head. What if he is?
- 33:22Then he's not playing for Oklahoma at the beginning of the
- 33:24seasons. Take a time out.
- 33:26Hold this next Miller and Condon underway in a Tuesday.
- 33:29Thanks for being with us, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 33:39I'm Millary Condon, welcome back Iowa Sports Radio network.
- 33:42Trent Condon, Ken Miller take you until 2.
- 33:44Let's get right to the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 33:47He is Mitch Holt of Papa John's daily Chiefs training camp
- 33:50report Papa John's throughout the state of Iowa sponsor these
- 33:53Mitch Trenton. Ken, look forward to today's
- 33:55report. Hearing from Isaiah Pachek
- 33:57before we get into that is it. I don't think this happens every
- 34:01year, but back-to-back West Coast road trips to start pre
- 34:05season. That doesn't happen, right?
- 34:08Does not happen. I have no idea why, why it
- 34:11happened, how it happened, but no.
- 34:13And so this, these three days, I call them nitty gritty days,
- 34:18especially this day, it's really one of the hardest days of all
- 34:21camp because we're in pads 2 hours and 25 minutes.
- 34:24And I just, the young guys are the new guys like the guys we
- 34:27pick up as free agents when we get back from Arizona at 5:00 in
- 34:31the morning. They're going, we're going back
- 34:32to camp. Yep.
- 34:33Going back to camp and it's like, whoa, that's like, and
- 34:36then you got to practice and today was a hard practice.
- 34:39So yes, it's very peculiar and not exactly the best thing in
- 34:44the world because now we got to go out to Seattle 9:00 start
- 34:48time and come rolling back in at 6:00.
- 34:50So it affects the next week. I don't know.
- 34:53Yeah, it's very peculiar. I don't remember it happening in
- 34:56my 32 years prior to this one. Mitch, I remember our reports
- 34:59when Pacheco a couple years ago was a rookie and they get this
- 35:02guy late in the draft and here it go again.
- 35:04And and you're talking about him like, well, I remember Matt
- 35:06Rutgers. Is he is he going to be this
- 35:08kind of back in the NFL? And yes, he is this kind of back
- 35:11in the NFL. It goes to scouting, it goes to
- 35:13development and it and it just shows you the way they put this
- 35:16team together. They always have a plan for
- 35:18everybody, even a 7th rounder. And I told you he could have
- 35:21moved, transferred, and they came early days of NIL like.
- 35:25And he stayed, He had two siblings that were murdered 18
- 35:28months apart. And he stayed.
- 35:30His family needed him. He stayed.
- 35:32He was going to gut it out, be at Rutgers, do what he can and
- 35:35make his money on the other end. Well, it's what he's doing.
- 35:37But he had $2100 purpose yards in 22 and 23.
- 35:41And then the fractured fibula last year took him out of 10
- 35:44games. It's really remarkable.
- 35:45He came back and he was kind of a shell of his former self.
- 35:49But that shell now is back. And I shouldn't say that the
- 35:52former self is back. And I asked him, you guys, guys,
- 35:55about this camp in particular and where he's at, and he's
- 36:01raring to go. It's phenomenal.
- 36:03You know, the guys are rolling, excited to us come the season.
- 36:07Most importantly, the fans here, they bring the energy out of us
- 36:10and you get to see a lot of new faces.
- 36:12When you went into this offseason, what were your
- 36:15priorities personally? Training hard, making sure I
- 36:18came back physically prepared and.
- 36:21Not only that, and just mentally, physically and
- 36:25emotionally prepare for what's to come this year.
- 36:29Yeah, it wasn't the hard work. Physically it was.
- 36:32But to do that without him, like recalibrating mentally and
- 36:35emotionally would be something short of what he needed to do.
- 36:39Well, he's on track. He's back, looks like his former
- 36:42self. And so the teachers need to help
- 36:44him out. They just can't, you know, give
- 36:45him the ball like Saquon Barkley style.
- 36:48They got to get some other guys to help Isaiah Pacheco.
- 36:51Kareem would be that guy. Do you think, Mitch, at this
- 36:53point? Yeah, he's fine.
- 36:56Last year, Ken, the stat was the Chiefs were number one in the
- 36:59NFL in second down and four or less, they had 13 more than the
- 37:03next closest team. It's because Hunt's getting 5
- 37:05yards now. He's not getting 50 yards.
- 37:08And I think that's where the next gear of the running
- 37:10backroom has to happen. Is that Brashard Smith.
- 37:13Hopefully, Elijah Mitchell, the former 49er, would regain his
- 37:16rookie form before his knee injury.
- 37:18So the room is still in a a little bit of a state of flux.
- 37:23So but they need some more speed.
- 37:26There's going to be some pop power and no pun intended is
- 37:28what we call Pacheco. There's going to be some more
- 37:30power or pop in this offense from the running back position,
- 37:34either on runs or on passes. Just bigger place.
- 37:37They'll just grind it out, but get a 25 yard play and even on a
- 37:40check down throw. So that's a that's a big part of
- 37:43this season for the Chiefs if they're going to get back to
- 37:45where they want to be. Speaking of that backfield,
- 37:47where does Carson Steele kind of fit in in his role in this
- 37:50offense? Man, you've got that's that's
- 37:52guy right there. He is right at the line.
- 37:55If you flip blue chalk line, he's right there.
- 37:58And last year, you know, kind of the camp darling came out of
- 38:01UCLA one year video game numbers of Ball State.
- 38:04Yeah. And but right now he's on the
- 38:07outside looking in. He's fighting to try to play his
- 38:10way back in same with Joshua Williams on defense.
- 38:13But, and I love Carson Steele, but he's not going to give you
- 38:16the 50 yard run. He's almost a replication of
- 38:19Kareem Hunt. Plow gets you 5-6, run hard.
- 38:22He's not going to run away from the second or third level.
- 38:25And what the Chiefs are hoping to get this year again, is some
- 38:28bigger plays on plays that aren't designed to be big plays,
- 38:31and those come from your running backs most of the time.
- 38:34It's yesterday I had to be away. I had an appointment that I
- 38:37couldn't change, I said to my. Doctor, you're at the State
- 38:39Fair. I know you were.
- 38:40You were. Explaining the hook?
- 38:41No, I said to the doctor. He said, look at Holtis is gonna
- 38:44let us know about a new special this week.
- 38:46Is there any way we can push this appointment back?
- 38:48So I'm 24 hours late. I mean, I'm losing sleep.
- 38:51What is it I've been dying to know?
- 38:52I'm losing sleep. It's in Johnston right now.
- 38:55Oh, it's being developed. Yeah, it's just coming out of
- 38:57R&D. They covered it up, you know,
- 39:00it's like when they used to. Like Taylor Swift's album?
- 39:03Yes, yes. Yes, and wait till she's got
- 39:07another album coming out about the Donaldsons and Kelsey.
- 39:11Yeah and she jumps on new heights and little crash every
- 39:13server. In the world like.
- 39:15OK, so anyway, waiting on it still got the 1299, you know,
- 39:19we're, we got that, we got that cheeseburger pizza 1299, but
- 39:23we're waiting on the new one to come out of the clouds.
- 39:26Dropped by a drone from the Intergalactic lab in Johnston,
- 39:30IA. Good stuff.
- 39:31We will talk to you tomorrow, my friend.
- 39:32Thanks for doing this, Mitch buddy.
- 39:34See you. Yep.
- 39:35Yes, Sir. Told us the voice of the Kansas
- 39:38City Chiefs. That is going to set.
- 39:39It's going to break the Internet.
- 39:41It, it absolutely is. My my wife was getting a little
- 39:44testy last night because the little wait.
- 39:47Well, no, the little clip came out and she hadn't seen the clip
- 39:50yet. And I said, well, here it comes.
- 39:52That is all speculation, rumors. I said, sit down here.
- 39:55I got you something HUD. And she's excited for Wednesday.
- 40:00And she is not alone. No, no, that's for sure.
- 40:04We'll take a time out, come back, switch gears, a little
- 40:06baseball to kick it off with those red hot Brewers and then
- 40:09Iowa State, Miller and Condon with you.
- 40:11Till 2 Iowa Sports Radio Network.
