- 1:02Speaker 2: thriller Sunday night in the Stadios Teca had forty five
- 1:06Speaker 2: million people watching in the United States lots. That is
- 1:10Speaker 2: a lot. In fact, two million more than watched the
- 1:14Speaker 2: US Belgian game. There were more people that watched in
- 1:16Speaker 2: this country half of it on Fox, half of it
- 1:19Speaker 2: on Telemundo. The England Mexico match on Sunday night. That
- 1:24Speaker 2: is the most watched soccer match ever in this country.
- 1:27Speaker 2: That's one of the largest non NFL viewerships in this
- 1:30Speaker 2: country in years. And it's about equal to what the
- 1:34Speaker 2: amount of people that watched the Rams and the Seahawks
- 1:36Speaker 2: in the NFC title game in January. That's a massive
- 1:39Speaker 2: audience for the World Cup. Yes, it is. A group
- 1:42Speaker 2: of eleven Republican lawmakers letter last night to WNBA Commissioner
- 1:46Speaker 2: Kathy Engelbert calling Caitlyn Clark quote the face of the

- 2:58Speaker 4: Through three ks your voices.
- 3:00Speaker 2: She loves to have the talkback voices at eleven thirty
- 3:03Speaker 2: while we also read your text on the Tacoma Dodge
- 3:05Speaker 2: text line on the show today, Well, where should we go?
- 3:10Speaker 2: Mike McDonald's down to Lake Tahoe because that's where that
- 3:13Speaker 2: celebrity American Century Championship golf tournament. I've not been to
- 3:18Speaker 2: the tournament. I've been to the play course where they
- 3:21Speaker 2: have it with the island green in the middle.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Of lakes everything.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, I have not actually been to the tournament itself.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Eighty some celebrity Steph Curry, Charles Barkley, they go every
- 3:33Speaker 2: Tony Romos with great golf.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Curry and us is there too, Yes, yeah.
- 3:38Speaker 2: And they all go well as a measure of how
- 3:41Speaker 2: Mike McDonald's star is just soaring after winning the Super Bowl,
- 3:46Speaker 2: he's there. I mean, he's a golfer. His dad got
- 3:50Speaker 2: him into golf. He's been to the Masters and was
- 3:53Speaker 2: in the Masters again this past not playing, of course,
- 3:57Speaker 2: but watching. But he's playing. And he was on to
- 4:00Speaker 2: Mike Patrick. Mike Patrick, it's an old college football hockey
- 4:03Speaker 2: NFL reference from way back when Dan Patrick's show he
- 4:08Speaker 2: was on Dan Patrick's show today, and we'll hear from
- 4:10Speaker 2: Mike McDonald about how he still has only watched the
- 4:13Speaker 2: Super Bowl one time and he's really really anxious and
- 4:17Speaker 2: curious to watch the TV copy and why is that.
- 4:19Speaker 2: He'll explain that. He also has a pretty interesting breakdown
- 4:22Speaker 2: of how he treats analytics. We've talked a lot in
- 4:25Speaker 2: the last well a couple of years really, but especially
- 4:28Speaker 2: the last few weeks about the Mariners.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Yeah, when it comes to baseball, it's a little.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Absolute allegiance to I mean to the point of just
- 4:35Speaker 2: defying common sense. And we're gonna make that. There was
- 4:39Speaker 2: another example last night in baseball, and I'm talking about in
- 4:41Speaker 2: a minute of analytics and numbers and numbers driven decisions.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Mike McDonald talked to Dan Patrick this morning about his
- 4:48Speaker 2: use of analytics, and Mike McDonald is as analytics as
- 4:51Speaker 2: anybody in football. He's a self described nerd. He used
- 4:54Speaker 2: that term a couple more times this morning with Dan Patrick.
- 4:57Speaker 2: And he breaks down film and looks for t and
- 5:00Speaker 2: he's all into that. But he talks about a balance
- 5:04Speaker 2: between analytics and trusting what your eyes and your gut
- 5:06Speaker 2: tell you, which I sure think the baseball team in
- 5:09Speaker 2: this town could use. Now, justman's right, Baseball analytics compared
- 5:13Speaker 2: to football analytics. They were doing it for decades before,
- 5:16Speaker 2: and they are far more entrenched into the game than
- 5:18Speaker 2: it isn't football, but football still has I mean, the
- 5:21Speaker 2: Seahawks have a whole department on the football operation staff
- 5:25Speaker 2: of analytics, and Mike McDonald consults them all the time.
- 5:27Speaker 2: He's got Scott Aaron is his headset. One of his
- 5:31Speaker 2: buttons you see when you're watching a game, Mike McDonald
- 5:33Speaker 2: presses buttons on his hip that he could put different
- 5:36Speaker 2: voices in his ear and his headset. Scott AerR is
- 5:38Speaker 2: one of them, and he's an analytics guy and he
- 5:41Speaker 2: tells him, Okay, kick a field goal here, or go
- 5:45Speaker 2: for it here, or if we get inside the forty,
- 5:47Speaker 2: we should do this here? Did the analytics say we
- 5:49Speaker 2: should do this? In fact, McDonald just hired another one
- 5:52Speaker 2: of those guys from Yale, a Yale graduate who's is mean,
- 5:56Speaker 2: smart people, who his analyts is his that's what he
- 6:01Speaker 2: did science. Quantitative science was his major at Yale. They
- 6:05Speaker 2: just hired a guy who'd been at Baltimore with McDonald
- 6:08Speaker 2: to be another one of those so he is. McDonald
- 6:12Speaker 2: is deeply entrenched in analytics, but I thought it was
- 6:16Speaker 2: interesting what he said this morning, Dan Patrick, about the
- 6:18Speaker 2: balance you have to have and how you have to
- 6:20Speaker 2: trust in your feel of the game and what you
- 6:23Speaker 2: see during the game. You'll hear from Mike McDonald about that.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Speaking of the Seahawks, there's a retreat in the mountains
- 6:29Speaker 2: of Idaho this week known as the Quote Summer Camp
- 6:32Speaker 2: for Billionaires that Forbes magazine detailed. It started a couple
- 6:37Speaker 2: days ago, and it could lead to the eventual sale
- 6:40Speaker 2: the Seahawks. We'll explain that the Mariners, among the many
- 6:44Speaker 2: problems they have for still unbelievably just battling the stay
- 6:47Speaker 2: over five hundred, which is just absurd that in this division,
- 6:50Speaker 2: in this American league, especially that they're having this much
- 6:53Speaker 2: trouble to stay above five hundred. Now, the problem is
- 6:57Speaker 2: not just from last night's game. They don't think like
- 7:00Speaker 2: baseball players. They don't think like amateur baseball players. I mean,
- 7:03Speaker 2: you do things that just like they're not even trying.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I mean, we saw it last night. We'll talk about that,
- 7:10Speaker 2: and we think the Mariners' offense is pretty bad, right, Well,
- 7:12Speaker 2: it's actually worse than maybe we think, and it's worse
- 7:15Speaker 2: than it's been in previous years. And many statistical measures.
- 7:19Speaker 4: If we're going into analytics.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Yeah, we're gonna talk numbers. Here's some numbers for the
- 7:23Speaker 2: Mariners that they probably won't like to see. There's also
- 7:26Speaker 2: out of Boston yesterday, more sobering scientific evidence that football
- 7:30Speaker 2: ruins the quality life for many NFL players in all
- 7:33Speaker 2: the decades after they're done playing. And that's the dirty
- 7:36Speaker 2: little secret that nobody wants to talk about. Certainly the
- 7:38Speaker 2: league doesn't, but there is a concerted effort in the
- 7:43Speaker 2: Boston medical community, where there is a CTE and Concussion Center,
- 7:48Speaker 2: to try to get to the root explanation for all
- 7:51Speaker 2: of the crazy neurology, a crazy amount of neurological neurodegenitive
- 7:58Speaker 2: diseases in former NFL players. And there's a study out
- 8:02Speaker 2: about that. They studied twenty thousand NFL deaths of all causes,
- 8:07Speaker 2: and they found some pretty alarming stuff about the neurodegenitive
- 8:10Speaker 2: trends among those deaths. And we'll talk about that to
- 8:13Speaker 2: eleven o'clock. Great friend of mine, Blake plit Price, he's
- 8:16Speaker 2: used to be on Vancouver Sports Radio which doesn't exist
- 8:19Speaker 2: anymore as of this week. Vancouver shuddered its last remaining
- 8:23Speaker 2: sports over the air radio station. We're talking to him
- 8:26Speaker 2: about that. He's a survivor of that. He and Matt
- 8:29Speaker 2: Sakaris great friends of mine. I'm on their show all
- 8:31Speaker 2: the time, their podcast. He's going to join us to
- 8:33Speaker 2: talk about that. He's going to talk about the Vancouver
- 8:35Speaker 2: World Cup experience. He get a chance to fire back
- 8:38Speaker 2: at me for the story I wrote the News Tribune
- 8:39Speaker 2: last week when I went up to Vancouver went to
- 8:41Speaker 2: the Switzerland and Algeria match and wrote that it was
- 8:45Speaker 2: tepid compared to the Seattle experience.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Well, we had kind of the best of the best leader.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Yeah, but I heard about it from a lot of
- 8:53Speaker 2: BC and Canadians about how that wasn't fair and you
- 8:56Speaker 2: picked a one match that was down. It was a
- 8:58Speaker 2: day after Canada Day. Everyone was hungover two teams that
- 9:01Speaker 2: weren't supposed to be The Canada was supposed to play
- 9:03Speaker 2: that match, but Switzerland had beaten him. Anyway, Blake got
- 9:06Speaker 2: everybody rabble roused up in Canada about my story and
- 9:09Speaker 2: I said, okay, let's have Blake go on.
- 9:10Speaker 5: I have a chance to well, hey, what do we
- 9:12Speaker 5: talk about. The opposite of love is apathy, not hate,
- 9:17Speaker 5: So there you go.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Blake has also going to talk about the Canucks the
- 9:21Speaker 2: offseason that they have had, the Northwest NHL rival of
- 9:24Speaker 2: the Crack and the Kracking. By the way, if you
- 9:26Speaker 2: may recall, just hired as an assistant general manager, the
- 9:30Speaker 2: general man the Canucks just fired after the disastrous season
- 9:34Speaker 2: they had. I want to asking what are the Kracking
- 9:36Speaker 2: getting in him? And he probably will chuckle about the
- 9:39Speaker 2: fact that the Crack and even hired him. The white
- 9:42Speaker 2: Caps future in Vancouver is also a story. There's reports
- 9:45Speaker 2: that Las Vegas investors are trying to move the Vancouver
- 9:48Speaker 2: white Caps MFS franchise to Las Vegas. And now they're
- 9:52Speaker 2: trying to get more money and civic money. Maybe get
- 9:55Speaker 2: a soccer only stadium, move him out of BC Place downtown,
- 9:57Speaker 2: which we saw this World Cup is a great vent.
- 10:00Speaker 2: But it's just hard to sell fifty two thousand seats
- 10:02Speaker 2: for every single MLS game. But we'll talk about all
- 10:05Speaker 2: of that with Blake Price at eleven o'clock. At twelve o'clock,
- 10:09Speaker 2: Nico Moreno, who a lot of you on the text
- 10:11Speaker 2: line wanted to come back on our show for his
- 10:13Speaker 2: passion of the World Cup in soccer and sounders and
- 10:15Speaker 2: all of it. Well, he is, he's coming back. He
- 10:18Speaker 2: may be in studio in fact here at noon. He
- 10:20Speaker 2: is going to be our pre to the pregame show,
- 10:23Speaker 2: the pre match show of the World Cup quarterfinal between
- 10:26Speaker 2: France and Morocco. That's going to be live in your ears,
- 10:28Speaker 2: starting a pregame show at twelve thirty and then one
- 10:30Speaker 2: o'clock right here on ninety three point three KJFM. So
- 10:33Speaker 2: tons going on today on the show. We're an extended version.
- 10:37Speaker 2: We're going to take you all the way up to
- 10:38Speaker 2: twelve thirty.
- 10:39Speaker 4: We look at us go on the extra min Yeah.
- 10:41Speaker 2: I had to sleep early and get up early and
- 10:44Speaker 2: do a couple laps around the block to get ready
- 10:46Speaker 2: for this, and we couldn't bring him in for a
- 10:49Speaker 2: half hour show, so that would just be silly and mean.
- 10:53Speaker 2: And he's trying to get ready for his golf tournament.
- 10:55Speaker 2: So we're going to run.
- 10:56Speaker 5: We're going which I will be tomorrow you will, yes, Yeah,
- 11:00Speaker 5: be hanging out with Ryan Holanski, who is the son
- 11:04Speaker 5: of Mark and Kim and brother of Tyler Grant. Yes,
- 11:08Speaker 5: I am always just honored to be there.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Are you paired with them to play?
- 11:14Speaker 4: No, I'm a driver. Oh I'm a good golf car girl.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Oh that's it.
- 11:18Speaker 5: I'll get them drinks. I will shake hands, kiss all
- 11:21Speaker 5: the babies.
- 11:22Speaker 2: That's a valuable thing to do.
- 11:23Speaker 4: With setting like that, I can recognize my role.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Yes, you have the golf turnament tomorrow in Maple Valley
- 11:28Speaker 2: that is so great to so many people and benefiting
- 11:31Speaker 2: so many cherries. The mayor of Maple Valley Ian Ferness,
- 11:34Speaker 2: putting that on tomorrow. So we're not going to bring
- 11:35Speaker 2: him into day for the half hour extra. We'll just
- 11:38Speaker 2: be here from ten until twelve thirty. Remember we talked
- 11:41Speaker 2: a couple days ago about the Marlins pulling their starting
- 11:45Speaker 2: pitcher Juri Perez. Yes, after seven innings, since the fans
- 11:47Speaker 2: and Sacramento are channing. Shame, shame, shame, And he had
- 11:51Speaker 2: a perfect game in ninety two pitches and they pulled him. Well,
- 11:54Speaker 2: it happened again last night in Pittsburgh, the same thing,
- 11:58Speaker 2: but it was even worse. Jared Jones had a perfect
- 12:01Speaker 2: game going through six innings. He had thrown just seventy
- 12:03Speaker 2: seven pitches against one of the best teams in the
- 12:05Speaker 2: League the Atlanta Braves. Just like with the Marlins, starter
- 12:09Speaker 2: Leeves Bullpen Oanners Perfect Game gone puff, but this time
- 12:12Speaker 2: he was even worse. The Pirates end up losing the game.
- 12:15Speaker 2: At least the Marlins when they took out Perez were
- 12:17Speaker 2: winning by so much that they won. The Pirates took
- 12:19Speaker 2: out their perfect game starter and they lost. But here's
- 12:24Speaker 2: the thing. Jarret Jones for the Pirates returned in late
- 12:27Speaker 2: May from surgery and his elbow got a ligament surgery
- 12:30Speaker 2: UCL and he didn't pitch at all last year. He
- 12:33Speaker 2: missed the entire season last year and just came back
- 12:35Speaker 2: this year. He's eight starts into his comeback from that,
- 12:37Speaker 2: so there's a you can understand that somewhat he has
- 12:42Speaker 2: not been more than somewhat he is not. Jones has
- 12:45Speaker 2: not pitched more than eighty one pitches in any of
- 12:46Speaker 2: his previous seven starts. So there was a precedent there
- 12:50Speaker 2: that the Pirates were saying, Ah, Manager Don Kelly last
- 12:53Speaker 2: night for the Pirates after he took out Jones and
- 12:54Speaker 2: the Perfect Game said quote, wanting guys to stay healthy
- 12:57Speaker 2: is the number one thing with these guys, because I
- 13:00Speaker 2: need Jared for the rest of the season throwing like that. Okay,
- 13:05Speaker 2: yet nobody ever thought about this until recently. And I'm
- 13:08Speaker 2: not saying this is wrong or right. I'm just giving
- 13:10Speaker 2: you some facts here about how this is a recent trend.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Okay, we'll go fact and then we'll go opinion.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Jeremy Frank runs at the MLB Random Stats page. He
- 13:20Speaker 2: noted that from nineteen oh one to twenty fifteen, you
- 13:24Speaker 2: know how many times the starting pitcher was pulled with
- 13:26Speaker 2: a perfect game going of at least six innings in
- 13:29Speaker 2: one hundred and fifteen years? Any guesses those of you
- 13:31Speaker 2: out there don't look it up, Yeah, go into your radio.
- 13:35Speaker 2: How many times in one hundred and fifteen years had
- 13:37Speaker 2: at starting major league pitcher who had a perfect game
- 13:39Speaker 2: carried through six innings been yanked?
- 13:42Speaker 4: Fifteen?
- 13:43Speaker 2: Jessman says, fifteen. Let's say you out in gig harbor.
- 13:54Speaker 2: So from twenty sixteen, I'm going to leave that hanging
- 13:56Speaker 2: for show. From twenty sixteen through last season. So after
- 14:00Speaker 2: twenty fifteen through last season and in ten years, how
- 14:03Speaker 2: many times do you think it happened over ten year period?
- 14:06Speaker 2: Nineteen three it happened three times in what most people
- 14:11Speaker 2: would consider Okay, analytics and pitch counts and limits. It
- 14:15Speaker 2: happened three times. A pitcher getting pulled after six innings
- 14:18Speaker 2: of a perfect game this weeks has happened twice in
- 14:20Speaker 2: four days this week. Now, I know they were extenuating searches.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Name we talk about Perez, who was also coming off
- 14:25Speaker 2: the injured list, and this was only his third start
- 14:27Speaker 2: coming back off the injured list. And then last night,
- 14:30Speaker 2: seventy seven pitches and six innings and the perfect game
- 14:33Speaker 2: guy goes out. It's happened twice in four days. It
- 14:36Speaker 2: happened three times in ten years. Okay, so I wouing
- 14:39Speaker 2: to reveal. And the one hundred and fifteen years before that.
- 14:42Speaker 2: You know how many times it happened. If you're on YouTube,
- 14:46Speaker 2: you've already got the answer. Nice zero. It never happened
- 14:49Speaker 2: in one hundred and fifteen years or fifteen years.
- 14:52Speaker 4: I thought I was being a minimalist in I guess.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Yeah, you're nineteen, yeah, whatever you said. One hundred and
- 14:58Speaker 2: fifteen years through tw fifteen of Major League baseball, it
- 15:01Speaker 2: never happened because you don't do that exactly, because no
- 15:04Speaker 2: one Ryan used to throw one hundred and two hundred
- 15:06Speaker 2: and three hundred pins who cares. It'll be good five
- 15:08Speaker 2: days from now. He can rest after the start, put
- 15:10Speaker 2: some ice on it, drink a beer, have a cigarette.
- 15:12Speaker 2: He's good. But we don't do that anymore. Some of
- 15:15Speaker 2: it is because these pitchers are throwing ninety five miles
- 15:19Speaker 2: an hour and breaking pitches when they're twelve and ninety
- 15:21Speaker 2: five when they're fourteen, and going to travel ball and
- 15:24Speaker 2: all these other things they do that never know. One
- 15:26Speaker 2: Ryan never went to travel ball.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Yeah, the arms are a little more weary, but the
- 15:30Speaker 5: time gets the main out, yes, worn out.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Yeah, and you got high school parents who say, you
- 15:36Speaker 2: can't pitch my kid because he's saving up for the
- 15:38Speaker 2: summer travel schedule.
- 15:40Speaker 3: I have.
- 15:41Speaker 2: I had that happen to me as a head baseball
- 15:43Speaker 2: coach in the city. That's where we're at now. And
- 15:46Speaker 2: then we can circle all the way back to pay
- 15:48Speaker 2: for play and the fact that kids play all year
- 15:50Speaker 2: long on travel teams and pay thousand of dollars for it.
- 15:54Speaker 2: That never used to happen. So yes, I get the
- 15:58Speaker 2: preserving the pitcher, but why what do we preserve him from.
- 16:01Speaker 2: He's already got like ten year veteran major league arments
- 16:04Speaker 2: by the time they're twenty years old, twenty five years old.
- 16:08Speaker 2: It's just it's crazy in our country, how you sports
- 16:12Speaker 2: gets elevated to this professional, commercialized, for profit and specialized
- 16:20Speaker 2: and professional at such a young age that then you
- 16:24Speaker 2: have situations like guys getting pulled two times in four
- 16:27Speaker 2: days after perfect games, after six innings. It is never
- 16:30Speaker 2: it had never happened for one hundred and fifteen years
- 16:32Speaker 2: through twenty fifteen. I found that fascinating. Did those guys'
- 16:37Speaker 2: arms fall off and they could never use their right
- 16:39Speaker 2: or left arms for the rest of their lives.
- 16:41Speaker 5: Yeah, hey, you retire around thirty ish if you're lucky
- 16:47Speaker 5: and good luck, I mean, you make a buttload of money.
- 16:52Speaker 2: So of course nobody's feeling bad for that.
- 16:54Speaker 5: But it is an interesting phenomenon that we're seeing.
- 16:59Speaker 2: It is just because it's new and they do it.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I had this discussion with Andrews. It became somewhat heated
- 17:05Speaker 2: a couple weeks ago. Just because it's what everyone doesn't
- 17:07Speaker 2: mean it's right. It just means it's what's currently being done.
- 17:10Speaker 4: But well, if your friends jump off a bridge.
- 17:14Speaker 2: I was trying to make I was trying to make
- 17:17Speaker 2: the point just because they do it today doesn't make
- 17:19Speaker 2: it right. It just means that's what they do right.
- 17:22Speaker 4: And then we learn from it and things change in
- 17:24Speaker 4: the future.
- 17:24Speaker 2: But for one hundred and fifteen years, and if you
- 17:26Speaker 2: could extrapolate it out from twenty fifteen to the end
- 17:29Speaker 2: of last year, one hundred and twenty five years, it
- 17:33Speaker 2: happened three times, and it's happened twice in four days.
- 17:37Speaker 2: But one hundred and fifteen years, it never happened. Through
- 17:39Speaker 2: twenty fifteen, it's happened twice in four days. Anyway, I
- 17:41Speaker 2: thought that was peculiar, to say the least.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Yeah, just say the least, I mean.
- 17:47Speaker 5: And also those guys, it's isn't that the pinnacle of
- 17:50Speaker 5: your career is the point to pitch a perfect.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Game once in a lifetime thing exactly. You'll never be
- 17:56Speaker 2: in that situation again.
- 17:58Speaker 4: You just don't do you fight.
- 18:01Speaker 5: I feel like the fights we used to see between
- 18:04Speaker 5: manager Catcher and pitcher on the mound used to be
- 18:07Speaker 5: a little more feisty, and now it's okay, I'll do
- 18:13Speaker 5: what's best for the team, which is also something that
- 18:16Speaker 5: you should be doing.
- 18:16Speaker 2: They've grown up this way and this is what they know,
- 18:19Speaker 2: and yeah, they should be kicking water coolers and stuff
- 18:21Speaker 2: getting that. That guy for the Marlins just hanging over the
- 18:23Speaker 2: dugout rail watching his perfect game go away. He just
- 18:26Speaker 2: kind of shrugged. They showed him the dugout and he just, yeah,
- 18:32Speaker 2: I need.
- 18:32Speaker 5: But if you grew up in that system, it's like,
- 18:34Speaker 5: I also get it. You know, do what's best for
- 18:39Speaker 5: the team in that situation. It just sucks for that
- 18:42Speaker 5: once in a lifetime to be taking You.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Imagine if the Mariners took out Felix Hernandoz. Oh god, no,
- 18:48Speaker 2: that afternoon, that weekday afternoon against.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Tampa, wasn't that magnificent?
- 18:52Speaker 2: It's perfect game in August? It was like one hundred
- 18:55Speaker 2: degrees here there.
- 18:56Speaker 4: It was a day game.
- 18:56Speaker 2: It was it was an afternoon game, and it was
- 18:58Speaker 2: I remembers one hundred degrees. They could have said, well,
- 19:01Speaker 2: we need you for September when we go five hundred again,
- 19:04Speaker 2: or oh it's too hot out or whatever. I can't
- 19:07Speaker 2: even remember that. He had one hundred some pitches or
- 19:09Speaker 2: whatever it was for the.
- 19:10Speaker 4: Compason one on one.
- 19:11Speaker 2: He was very efficient, which is why he got through
- 19:14Speaker 2: the nine. But can you imagine if someone tried to
- 19:16Speaker 2: come out and take him out of that they would
- 19:17Speaker 2: have been like, you just looked at him, but now
- 19:20Speaker 2: the guy's just handing the ball. Walk off. And Okay,
- 19:23Speaker 2: speaking of Pittsburgh, by the way, you ripped the Pirates yesterday.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Everyone does it, you know the Pirates in the I.
- 19:29Speaker 4: Ripped Pittsburgh specifically, you did?
- 19:32Speaker 2: You did. The Pirates and Mariners have the same record.
- 19:35Speaker 2: It's just the Pirates are in the wrong division. If
- 19:37Speaker 2: they're in the West, they'd be tied for first right now,
- 19:39Speaker 2: they're in the National League Central, so they're ten and
- 19:41Speaker 2: eleven and a half games back.
- 19:42Speaker 5: But I also feel bad from the entire state of
- 19:44Speaker 5: Pennsylvania for having to deal with that geographical matrix that
- 19:49Speaker 5: happens when it comes to their sports divisions and conferences.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Well, if you divide him at about the Alleghany Mountains,
- 19:55Speaker 2: that's where west of the Alleghany Mountains east of Alleghany Mountains.
- 19:58Speaker 2: You don't have to feel bad for them.
- 20:00Speaker 4: It's you have that very special.
- 20:03Speaker 2: Different state over there. Yes, when we come back, let's break.
- 20:08Speaker 2: I was gonna get bring this up, but we'll do
- 20:10Speaker 2: it when we come back. About Adam Thielen, at some
- 20:12Speaker 2: point in the show, we're gonna tell you about what
- 20:14Speaker 2: Adam Thlen said about paying with Aaron Rodgers last season
- 20:17Speaker 2: at Pittsburgh made me laugh.
- 20:18Speaker 4: Oh, I can't wait to hear that up.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Next, let's talk about the Mariners multiple measures. Their offense
- 20:24Speaker 2: is worse than maybe we even think. And I don't
- 20:26Speaker 2: even hate I hate to even bring that up. But also, man,
- 20:29Speaker 2: are they not baseball smart? We'll talk about that next
- 20:32Speaker 2: on ninety three point three kJ R f M. Welcome
- 20:56Speaker 2: back reg Bell, Jessman McIntyre with your Happy Thursday to y.
- 21:00Speaker 2: They're gonna take you right up to twelve thirty in
- 21:02Speaker 2: the iHeart National pregame show pre match show to be
- 21:06Speaker 2: technically correct of the World Cup quarterfinal between France and Morocco,
- 21:10Speaker 2: and then one pm the match will begin and we'll
- 21:12Speaker 2: be here live on ninety three point three KJRFM from
- 21:14Speaker 2: right outside Boston. France the overwhelming favorite to win the tournament.
- 21:20Speaker 2: I think it's gonna be France and England. Actually I'm
- 21:22Speaker 2: picking England to beat Argentina. Argentina.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Oh man, I was going for Argentina. Argentina at a stage.
- 21:28Speaker 4: At this stage, they've.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Been teetering that would be a semifinal matchup. They're bracketed
- 21:33Speaker 2: against each other England and Argentina. France is on the
- 21:36Speaker 2: other side of the bracket. Spain would be their semifinal.
- 21:40Speaker 4: Oh, I'm just Argentina.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Spain tomorrow will play Belgium in Los Angeles. That'll also
- 21:44Speaker 2: be here on ninety three point three KJRFM. That's a
- 21:47Speaker 2: eleven thirty pre game and a noon kickoff live on
- 21:49Speaker 2: the radio, and we will take you right up to
- 21:52Speaker 2: that tomorrow too. Our show will be from ten until
- 21:54Speaker 2: eleven thirty. Today it's from ten until twelve thirty because
- 21:56Speaker 2: the matches at one o'clock and the pregame show is
- 21:58Speaker 2: at twelve thirty right here on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Mike McDonald, the Seahawks coach, was at the US Belgium
- 22:05Speaker 2: match Monday night in Seattle. I saw him his five
- 22:08Speaker 2: feet from me. We kind of nodded and smiled as
- 22:10Speaker 2: he was on the field and the right before the
- 22:12Speaker 2: national anthem and he yelled we do not care, and
- 22:13Speaker 2: all that stuff got all the crowd as as loud
- 22:16Speaker 2: as the crowd got the whole night. After the anthem,
- 22:20Speaker 2: it was muted.
- 22:21Speaker 5: I wonder about him too, It's like, hey see, ready
- 22:24Speaker 5: for the spotlight that he's in.
- 22:26Speaker 2: He does not have that persona. He doesn't and he
- 22:29Speaker 2: admits that he is not that kind of guy. And yeah,
- 22:33Speaker 2: he's just he calls himself a nerd. He said, he
- 22:36Speaker 2: just wants his iPad and his analytics and film breakdown
- 22:39Speaker 2: and spend time with his wife and their young son.
- 22:41Speaker 2: And yeah, this is all brand new to him. And
- 22:44Speaker 2: we asked him about it all the time and he
- 22:46Speaker 2: kind of just chuckles, like, yeah, I don't know. The
- 22:48Speaker 2: Jimmy Kimmel show he went to right after all that
- 22:51Speaker 2: stuff is so not Mike McDonald. Well, as part of
- 22:55Speaker 2: that new fame, he is in a lot Lake Tahoe
- 22:57Speaker 2: this weekend down in California at the Americans Century Golf Championship.
- 23:01Speaker 2: It's a celebrity golf championship. Jason Kelcey, Tony Romo, Steph Curry,
- 23:06Speaker 2: Charles Barkley, the whole thing. Oh, I've been there, and
- 23:09Speaker 2: I've been to the course, but you've been to the
- 23:11Speaker 2: event and it's.
- 23:12Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I won as a fan. It's just it
- 23:15Speaker 5: is so much fun. That seventeenth hole is out of control.
- 23:18Speaker 2: The one that has the green in the middle of
- 23:20Speaker 2: the water, the middle of the lake there in the
- 23:21Speaker 2: island Green.
- 23:22Speaker 5: Well, yeah, and also the three point contest when it
- 23:25Speaker 5: comes to a basketball court randomly being planted on a
- 23:29Speaker 5: golf course.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Yes, so Mike McDonald is there. He was invited there,
- 23:33Speaker 2: and that's the show how his star has risen. He
- 23:36Speaker 2: was on the Dan Patrick Show, Dan Patrick Smart. He
- 23:38Speaker 2: takes his show there because of all these superstars that
- 23:40Speaker 2: are there, and he can pluck him off as they're
- 23:42Speaker 2: head no golf courts. Well, he plucked off Mike McDonald
- 23:46Speaker 2: and McDonald had some interesting things to save one. He's
- 23:48Speaker 2: only watched the Super Bowl tape one time. It was
- 23:51Speaker 2: the coach's copy, just once since its Super Bowl ended,
- 23:54Speaker 2: and he wants he's gonna explain why he wants to
- 23:57Speaker 2: watch the television copy. And he also has an interesting
- 24:00Speaker 2: explanation for even though he calls himself a nerd, how
- 24:02Speaker 2: he balances analytics with how his gut and what his
- 24:05Speaker 2: eyes tell him during your.
- 24:06Speaker 6: Game, we have a good plan in place to try
- 24:09Speaker 6: to make sure we allow this thing to get to
- 24:12Speaker 6: a place where we feel good about it. That sounds
- 24:14Speaker 6: like part of the guy that's gonna be our starter
- 24:16Speaker 6: for I was just say that sounds like she's interested.
- 24:20Speaker 2: You know.
- 24:20Speaker 7: So that's that's what's going on in my mind. Probably
- 24:23Speaker 7: twenty four to seven. It's not a good place to be,
- 24:25Speaker 7: but uh, I think, I think like you're just starting
- 24:28Speaker 7: with data and then to me it's like, well, what's
- 24:30Speaker 7: the best decision for the team?
- 24:31Speaker 3: Is that?
- 24:32Speaker 8: It is that where the gut goes?
- 24:34Speaker 2: You know?
- 24:34Speaker 8: Am I going off my gut? Here is it? How's
- 24:37Speaker 8: the game going?
- 24:38Speaker 2: You know this?
- 24:38Speaker 7: But like people that fight it, I just don't understand, like,
- 24:42Speaker 7: just relaxed. Why are you fighting it now? You don't
- 24:44Speaker 7: have to do what the numbers said?
- 24:45Speaker 5: But we will, we will keep going. I just wanted
- 24:51Speaker 5: to get it from the exact right spot.
- 24:53Speaker 2: So Dan Patrick was talking to him about, Okay, how
- 24:56Speaker 2: many times did you watch the Super Bowl? And he
- 24:57Speaker 2: expected him to say like fifty times, like it's his
- 25:00Speaker 2: favorite rerun, and Mike McDonald said, no, just once. Justin
- 25:04Speaker 2: is going to try to find I We just got
- 25:05Speaker 2: this right before the show and so we're rolling with it.
- 25:08Speaker 2: But it's it was surprising to Patrick that McDonald said
- 25:12Speaker 2: he's only watched it once and that he also wanted
- 25:14Speaker 2: to watch the TV copy. He said he wanted to
- 25:17Speaker 2: hear how the commercials and the flow of the game
- 25:19Speaker 2: and how they came in and out of commercials because
- 25:21Speaker 2: he never gets to watch football games like that. He's
- 25:23Speaker 2: always coaching in him. Maybe a Monday night game, but
- 25:25Speaker 2: even then he's usually in the office. I think we
- 25:28Speaker 2: have the start of the clip that we wanted to
- 25:30Speaker 2: air about this. We we have a good plan. We
- 25:35Speaker 2: allow this thing to We'll get it for you anyway,
- 25:37Speaker 2: that's what he's trying to do.
- 25:39Speaker 4: Yes, yes, well we'll get the whole thing.
- 25:41Speaker 5: And I do apologize my mouse keeps skipping around during
- 25:45Speaker 5: this timing, but we'll get it, and it's it is
- 25:48Speaker 5: very interesting.
- 25:49Speaker 2: What's interesting to me is to contrast how Mike McDonald
- 25:53Speaker 2: talks about analytics and how this Mariners obviously use analytics. Now, yes,
- 25:59Speaker 2: baseball is much much more of an analytics driven sport,
- 26:02Speaker 2: and it's been steeped in for decades, and yes football
- 26:06Speaker 2: is a little bit later to it and not nearly
- 26:08Speaker 2: as intricate. But if any team is in the analytics,
- 26:11Speaker 2: it's the Seahawks and Mike McDonald. And when they hired him,
- 26:14Speaker 2: that was part of the reason they hired him was
- 26:16Speaker 2: because of his modern approach specifically to defensive football. But
- 26:21Speaker 2: he has all kinds of situational numbers that tell him
- 26:25Speaker 2: when an offense is in this formation on this down
- 26:28Speaker 2: and distance, their tendency is to do this, so we
- 26:30Speaker 2: should be in that. So McDonald talks first about the
- 26:34Speaker 2: Super Bowl and how many times he wants to watch it,
- 26:36Speaker 2: and then he talks about his balance of analytics and
- 26:38Speaker 2: his gut feeling as a coach.
- 26:42Speaker 8: And you're not gonna believe this.
- 26:42Speaker 7: I've watched it once on tape during the draft process,
- 26:47Speaker 7: and we still haven't watched the TV copy.
- 26:50Speaker 8: So I don't know what's wrong with they or whatever,
- 26:52Speaker 8: but we just we haven't.
- 26:53Speaker 2: So you're worried. There's a different ending here.
- 26:57Speaker 7: There is like a I don't know, there's like a
- 27:00Speaker 7: just no no pull to do it yet.
- 27:02Speaker 8: I think we'll do it before camp starts.
- 27:04Speaker 7: But I actually I'm interested to watched the commercials, and
- 27:07Speaker 7: I know that's kind of a weird thing. It's like
- 27:09Speaker 7: to watch like to have the flow of the game
- 27:11Speaker 7: with commercials, and that'll be cool.
- 27:13Speaker 9: So but what would you glean from watching the Super Bowl?
- 27:17Speaker 9: Like what would you take away by the TV copy? Yeah,
- 27:20Speaker 9: that could help you, well, it's going.
- 27:23Speaker 7: To be tricky because we start with the Patriots, you know,
- 27:26Speaker 7: so I'm like a I'm a psycho edata guy where
- 27:28Speaker 7: I need numbers and tendencies and uh, you know, I
- 27:32Speaker 7: need you know, like what's the what's the data telling
- 27:35Speaker 7: me all the time. So now there's no data, so
- 27:36Speaker 7: it's you know, what's going to be their counter to
- 27:38Speaker 7: what we did? You know, how do we kind of
- 27:40Speaker 7: take the next you know, you know, evolution of what
- 27:43Speaker 7: we did and like where we at scheme wise?
- 27:45Speaker 8: So it's tricky.
- 27:47Speaker 7: Those first games of the year are tricky when it
- 27:50Speaker 7: comes to tendencies and how you call games, how you
- 27:52Speaker 7: build game plans.
- 27:52Speaker 9: When did you lean on analytics? When when did you
- 27:55Speaker 9: go all in and say.
- 27:57Speaker 7: This, Well, it just it always seemed that it was
- 27:59Speaker 7: just just made sense. It's like, why wouldn't we use
- 28:01Speaker 7: the best information out there? You know, you don't have
- 28:04Speaker 7: to do it, but why would you be scared about
- 28:06Speaker 7: things that are gonna possibly help you?
- 28:08Speaker 8: So why wouldn't you just lean into it?
- 28:09Speaker 9: But if they have the analytics on you, like, don't
- 28:13Speaker 9: don't you cancel each other out if you both have
- 28:15Speaker 9: the same A Sometimes I.
- 28:16Speaker 7: Turn into Vince Vaughan and wedding crashers, like, am I interested?
- 28:19Speaker 7: Now I'm not interested?
- 28:20Speaker 2: Maybe I'm interested now she's interested.
- 28:22Speaker 10: You know.
- 28:23Speaker 7: So that's that's what's going on in my mind probably
- 28:25Speaker 7: twenty four to seven.
- 28:26Speaker 8: It's not a good place to be.
- 28:27Speaker 7: But I think I think, like you're just starting with
- 28:30Speaker 7: data and then to me, it's like, well, what's the
- 28:32Speaker 7: best decision for the team?
- 28:33Speaker 3: Is that?
- 28:34Speaker 8: It is that where the gut goes?
- 28:36Speaker 5: You know?
- 28:36Speaker 8: Am I going off my gut? Here is it? How's
- 28:40Speaker 8: the game going?
- 28:40Speaker 2: You know this?
- 28:41Speaker 7: But like people that fight it, I just don't understand,
- 28:43Speaker 7: like just relaxed. Why are you fighting now? You don't
- 28:46Speaker 7: have to do what the numbers said? But but how
- 28:48Speaker 7: much is gut? How much was the Super Bowl gut
- 28:52Speaker 7: doing something? Or based on analytics? I don't I don't think.
- 28:56Speaker 7: I don't think analytics drives our decisions. I think I
- 28:59Speaker 7: think they support art decisions. And really it's a starting
- 29:01Speaker 7: point on a lot of things. But you have to
- 29:04Speaker 7: go off the tape and you have to understand like
- 29:07Speaker 7: how teams operate, and you have to have a great
- 29:09Speaker 7: feel for your team, you know, when you're building game plans.
- 29:11Speaker 7: It's not necessarily just doing it against the team you're playing.
- 29:14Speaker 7: You're also trying to put your guys in position to
- 29:16Speaker 7: do stuff that they can do well and so and
- 29:19Speaker 7: then endgame, you know, like we're just side on fourth down,
- 29:21Speaker 7: and you have a game plan going to the game
- 29:23Speaker 7: on how we want to handle all those situations, and
- 29:25Speaker 7: then you know you have to be able to adjust.
- 29:28Speaker 2: It's interesting to hear a guy who calls himself a
- 29:30Speaker 2: quote I'm a psychodata guy talk about how he relies
- 29:34Speaker 2: on his gut and he's on the sideline and he
- 29:37Speaker 2: knows what his guys can do. That's his job as
- 29:40Speaker 2: a coach to put him in the best possible position
- 29:41Speaker 2: to do what they do best. And he relies on
- 29:44Speaker 2: that too. So there is a place in analytics, and
- 29:48Speaker 2: I'm not some of you on the text line think good,
- 29:50Speaker 2: I'm just this old guy, yell and get off my lawn.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Sure in baseball too, there's absolutely more than a place
- 29:56Speaker 2: in analytics. But it should not be all encompassing the
- 29:59Speaker 2: only thing you rely on.
- 30:00Speaker 4: No, it's not the only thing.
- 30:01Speaker 2: It should not drive bring up a one thirty five
- 30:03Speaker 2: hitter just because he hits right handed, and you just
- 30:05Speaker 2: brought in a left handed batter, it shouldn't be well,
- 30:09Speaker 2: we can't pitch this guy more than one inning because
- 30:11Speaker 2: he threw eight pitches when he sat down for five minutes,
- 30:13Speaker 2: and now he can't go back out and pitch another inning.
- 30:16Speaker 2: That's my point is that McDonald is saying, trust your gut.
- 30:22Speaker 2: I know football, I know my team, I know my players,
- 30:26Speaker 2: I know what the numbers are telling me. But I
- 30:27Speaker 2: also know what my eyes say. And a lot of
- 30:30Speaker 2: times he goes to what as I say, and boy,
- 30:32Speaker 2: that worked out okay last year for the Seahawks. So
- 30:36Speaker 2: that was interesting to me that there is a self
- 30:38Speaker 2: proclaimed psycho data guy who calls himself a nerd, who
- 30:42Speaker 2: Devin Witherspoon leefully calls a nerd, who says, I don't
- 30:47Speaker 2: rely totally on analytics. We use it as perhaps a
- 30:50Speaker 2: starting point or supporting to what we do.
- 30:52Speaker 4: Supporting, I think, is the proper word for that.
- 30:55Speaker 2: It would be nice if the baseball team thought that way.
- 30:58Speaker 2: And it's not to say say that they never ever
- 31:01Speaker 2: ever do anything that is not analytics related, but sure
- 31:04Speaker 2: as hell, there's some times you make you go, well,
- 31:05Speaker 2: what are they doing it for? If it's not why
- 31:09Speaker 2: And we were gonna do it this, we'll do it
- 31:12Speaker 2: next segment. We'll talk about the why of the Mariners game.
- 31:15Speaker 2: On top of all the problems they have with their
- 31:17Speaker 2: pitching decisions, on top of these rules that limit guys
- 31:21Speaker 2: who have to leave the game after eight pitches, on
- 31:24Speaker 2: top of the six man rotation, on top of the
- 31:26Speaker 2: fact that they can't hit unless they can't score unless
- 31:28Speaker 2: they hit home runs. They are a dumb team. They
- 31:33Speaker 2: just don't know how to play the game at a
- 31:34Speaker 2: major league level, at a minor league level, at an
- 31:36Speaker 2: amateur level. They do things we saw two nights ago
- 31:39Speaker 2: Weston Wilson. We saw it again last night. We're talking
- 31:41Speaker 2: about that next to ninety three point three KJRFF. Hi,
- 32:05Speaker 2: welcome back. Thanks for listening to us on a Thursday
- 32:07Speaker 2: morning where we might be listening on Teresa Radio on

- 32:18Speaker 2: Website nine through three KJR dot com where you can
- 32:20Speaker 2: find the podcast for all the Greg Bell Show. Jessmin
- 32:22Speaker 2: McIntyre will have that loaded up right after the show
- 32:25Speaker 2: twelve thirty today pregame show and one o'clock the match,
- 32:28Speaker 2: both on ninety three point three KJR live here on
- 32:30Speaker 2: the radio France and Morocco in the World Cup Quarterfinals
- 32:33Speaker 2: from just outside Boston right here on ninety three point
- 32:36Speaker 2: three KJAR at twelve thirty pre game and a one
- 32:39Speaker 2: o'clock kickoff of the World Cup Quarterfinals. Hockey has news
- 32:43Speaker 2: this morning. There was a new highest paid player in
- 32:46Speaker 2: the NHL. He's twenty one years old.
- 32:49Speaker 4: Leo might to be young again.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Oh can you imagine Leo Carlson center for the Anaheim Ducks.
- 32:56Speaker 2: The Philadelphia Flyers surprised the Ducks and gave him an
- 33:00Speaker 2: offer sheet of ninety million dollars over five years. That's
- 33:04Speaker 2: eighteen million a year. Because I got sports writer mass
- 33:07Speaker 2: He's made. He just made. He's twenty one years old.
- 33:10Speaker 2: He's just finishing his his entry level contract. He got
- 33:14Speaker 2: paid nine hundred and fifty thousand last year. He's going
- 33:16Speaker 2: to go from nine hundred and fifty thousand to eighteen
- 33:18Speaker 2: million because the Ducks just matched that Flyer's offer. He
- 33:22Speaker 2: had sixty seven total points twenty eight goals last year
- 33:25Speaker 2: for the Ducks. He's now the highest paid player in
- 33:26Speaker 2: the NHL. It's Leo Carlson at five years, ninety million dollars.
- 33:31Speaker 2: The Ducks are going to match the Flyers offer sheet
- 33:33Speaker 2: to keep them, and it's going to cost him a
- 33:35Speaker 2: lot to do it. In baseball, I almost shut her
- 33:38Speaker 2: to bring up what happened last night with the Mariners.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Thirty three plate appearances, zero runs, five hits in the
- 33:45Speaker 2: lost of Miami. Remember that was a converted reliever that
- 33:49Speaker 2: was starting last night, went five innings, and three more
- 33:51Speaker 2: Marlins relievers shut him down. Marlin's a roll and they've won.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Like I think, it's nine of eleven games now and
- 33:57Speaker 2: our eight games over five hundred, Maryors are one game
- 33:59Speaker 2: of five hundred, which is just inexplicable with this roster
- 34:02Speaker 2: and talent and World Series aspirations. This was the eighth
- 34:06Speaker 2: time that Mariners have been shut out ninety three games
- 34:08Speaker 2: this season. That's two more times than they were shut
- 34:10Speaker 2: out the entire season of one hundred and sixty two
- 34:12Speaker 2: last year. So when we think, well this we've seen
- 34:15Speaker 2: this for two years, we actually haven't seen it this bad.
- 34:17Speaker 2: They've been shut out eight times already. Their offensive ranks Jesse,
- 34:24Speaker 2: I mean again, this is like raincloud to even bring
- 34:26Speaker 2: this up. Since June fifteenth, the Mariners are batting two
- 34:30Speaker 2: h nine that's twenty ninth in the major leagues, two
- 34:33Speaker 2: ninety three on base percentage twenty fifth in the league,
- 34:36Speaker 2: three twenty slugging thirtieth in Baseball. W RC plus is
- 34:41Speaker 2: eighty one, that's twenty fifth. They have one hundred and
- 34:44Speaker 2: twenty six hits that's thirtieth. Sixteen home runs is thirtieth,
- 34:49Speaker 2: sixty two RBIs is thirtieth, nineteen doubles is thirtieth. That's
- 34:52Speaker 2: their offense.
- 34:54Speaker 4: Woo.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Can you imagine if they didn't have the pitching they'd have,
- 34:57Speaker 2: they'd be twenty games under five hundred.
- 34:59Speaker 5: Its just strikes me so much of so many of
- 35:02Speaker 5: the things that we have dealt with with the Mariners
- 35:05Speaker 5: over years. Is the pitching is there, and that's what
- 35:09Speaker 5: you need, right pitching and defense and that's there, That
- 35:14Speaker 5: is there, and that the offense is just it.
- 35:18Speaker 2: It's so reliant, it's so reliant on the home.
- 35:21Speaker 5: It's way too much. And I thought that was going
- 35:23Speaker 5: to be an early season problem. I didn't think it
- 35:25Speaker 5: was going to last. But the small ball is not there.
- 35:29Speaker 2: No ball, I mean, they if they don't hit home runs.
- 35:31Speaker 2: They're done. You can't win a game without scoring a run.
- 35:34Speaker 2: You can't, no matter how good your pitching is. It
- 35:37Speaker 2: just suffice to say so. Remember the other night we
- 35:39Speaker 2: saw West and Wilson. He's faster. So let's take dom
- 35:43Speaker 2: can Zone out of the game as the ghost runner
- 35:45Speaker 2: in the tent thing. Bring in westn Wilson, a triple
- 35:47Speaker 2: A player, and he takes off on a groundball a
- 35:50Speaker 2: chopper right in front of him, and was thrown out
- 35:52Speaker 2: from me to you at third base as the first
- 35:54Speaker 2: out of the tenth. They lose the game in the
- 35:56Speaker 2: bottom of the tenth. You just cannot afford to not
- 35:58Speaker 2: score as a visiting team in the top of an
- 36:01Speaker 2: extra any game when you're gifted the runner at second
- 36:03Speaker 2: base to begin the inning, yeah, you just have to
- 36:05Speaker 2: score there. Yeah, and they didn't because he ran right
- 36:08Speaker 2: into the out. Well, then last night happened. Bottom of
- 36:12Speaker 2: the night. They get a base on base, so tying
- 36:15Speaker 2: runs at the plate in a two nothing game. Top
- 36:17Speaker 2: of the ninth. Excuse me, we're in Miami. I don't
- 36:20Speaker 2: know why Luke Brayley didn't challenge. They have two challenges
- 36:22Speaker 2: entering the ninth part of the reason that it's great
- 36:25Speaker 2: to have challenges is so you can use them when
- 36:27Speaker 2: the game's on the line. Right, they have two challenges,
- 36:30Speaker 2: Luke Rayley, there's an obvious ball that the umpire misses.
- 36:33Speaker 2: It was early in the count, he doesn't call. It,
- 36:36Speaker 2: falls behind in the count, he doesn't challenge it, falls
- 36:39Speaker 2: behind the count. He strikes out. So now you got
- 36:42Speaker 2: two outs and a man on Cole Young who has
- 36:45Speaker 2: been the MVP of the team and as you listen
- 36:47Speaker 2: to me talk about he's the best player on the team.
- 36:49Speaker 2: He's been so smart all around player. Hit to the
- 36:53Speaker 2: opposite field when you pitches out there, don't try to
- 36:55Speaker 2: kill the ball. All of it. Yes, well, even he
- 37:00Speaker 2: was stupid last night. Game on the line, to two
- 37:03Speaker 2: pitch with the runner at third, you're down by two
- 37:06Speaker 2: runs at a minue. You gotta get on base, Coach,
- 37:08Speaker 2: you'd love a home run because that's the only way
- 37:10Speaker 2: this team scores.
- 37:11Speaker 4: But at least get on base.
- 37:14Speaker 2: So that we can all see on the Marin's TV broadcast,
- 37:20Speaker 2: we can see how many challenges they have left. It's
- 37:22Speaker 2: just staring at it and the Mariners have to know this.
- 37:24Speaker 2: You have to know this as a batter in the
- 37:26Speaker 2: situation that if it's even come anywhere near, even if
- 37:29Speaker 2: it's not closed, maybe if it's piped down the middle,
- 37:31Speaker 2: you still challenge it, because hell, what are you gonna
- 37:33Speaker 2: do with the two challenges you can well, the pitch
- 37:36Speaker 2: is outside. He does not challenge Cole Young could have
- 37:39Speaker 2: easily gotten too three and two. Of course we all
- 37:41Speaker 2: saw it, and we're all yelling and across the Pacific Northwest.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Use your challenge. He didn't. He just walks away and
- 37:48Speaker 2: they lose. Now, we all saw Randy Rose Arena last
- 37:52Speaker 2: weekend lose both of the Mariners challenge within the first
- 37:56Speaker 2: fourteen pitches of the game. He challenged twice in the
- 37:58Speaker 2: same at bat in the first inning, and they were
- 38:00Speaker 2: of them. The Dodgers had that happen again last night,
- 38:03Speaker 2: same thing in the first inning. A dude two times
- 38:06Speaker 2: in the first a bat challenge missed them both challenge over.
- 38:10Speaker 2: So obviously the Mariners have talked since the euro Rose Arena, Hey,
- 38:14Speaker 2: don't be just willy nilly challenging things. It ain't willy
- 38:17Speaker 2: nilly when the game's on the line in the ninth
- 38:19Speaker 2: inning with two outs and a runner on and you're
- 38:21Speaker 2: the tying run. They went into the clubhouse losing the
- 38:26Speaker 2: game with those two challenges still in their pocket. They
- 38:28Speaker 2: must have eaten it for the postgame meal, because what
- 38:31Speaker 2: else would they have done with it? That just lacks that.
- 38:35Speaker 2: You can say that's coaching. But there needs a high
- 38:38Speaker 2: school player if you gave him challenge and knew, and
- 38:40Speaker 2: he knew the team had challenges, would challenge that pitch?
- 38:43Speaker 2: You wouldn't just know to do it? Did Dan Wilson
- 38:45Speaker 2: and Jerry Depoto tell the guys after the e Rose
- 38:47Speaker 2: Arena fiasco, don't challenge pitches period, unless we scream from
- 38:51Speaker 2: the dugout, which you're not supposed to do. It's supposed
- 38:53Speaker 2: to be that.
- 38:54Speaker 4: Can actually get you in trouble.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Correct, It's supposed to be a reflexive, within two seconds
- 38:59Speaker 2: decision by batter or the catcher or the pitcher, with
- 39:02Speaker 2: no interference or help from anybody. But what else can
- 39:07Speaker 2: explain what happened last night at the end, Either they
- 39:09Speaker 2: didn't know, which means they are stupider than Rocks, or
- 39:14Speaker 2: they knew and have been told not to do it.
- 39:18Speaker 4: I would choose the latter in that situation.
- 39:22Speaker 2: Did they tell them not to do it? Like never
- 39:24Speaker 2: ever do it is that we have another messaging problem
- 39:27Speaker 2: with this leadership.
- 39:28Speaker 5: I kind of feel like as soon as these new
- 39:31Speaker 5: rules come into play, especially the challenge, which is relatively new,
- 39:35Speaker 5: then they're still learning.
- 39:37Speaker 2: But there were ninety three games into the season, Jessamine,
- 39:40Speaker 2: I mean they were doing this in spring training. We're
- 39:42Speaker 2: like one hundred and forty games into this if you
- 39:44Speaker 2: count spring training.
- 39:48Speaker 4: Do you sound exhausted?
- 39:49Speaker 2: Well, and that's a great word to use for this, Jessamine.
- 39:52Speaker 2: If you're a Mariners fan, you are exhausted. And I
- 39:54Speaker 2: keep saying this, but you've watched fifty years of some
- 39:57Speaker 2: form of this. It's not like, well, there's that World
- 39:59Speaker 2: Series in nineteen ninety eight, No zero World Series is
- 40:02Speaker 2: and in fifty years. So if you're a Mariner fan
- 40:06Speaker 2: and you get eight outs from a World Series and
- 40:08Speaker 2: you have the team owner and players talking about World
- 40:11Speaker 2: Series on opening day, and you have a roster that
- 40:14Speaker 2: returns basically intact, not counting Rob Reschneider, we'll call that
- 40:18Speaker 2: a minus by addition, but basically intact from last year,
- 40:22Speaker 2: especially the pitching staff coming pretty much whole. It's the
- 40:25Speaker 2: starting pitcher is definitely whole. It is exhausting to watch
- 40:28Speaker 2: this team be one game over five hundred in July. Now,
- 40:31Speaker 2: I still say they're gonna win a division. They are
- 40:33Speaker 2: because that's how bad the division is. Two. They're gonna
- 40:35Speaker 2: win the division in reverse. They're gonna back into it.
- 40:39Speaker 2: It'd be like winning the Daytona five hundred. Well put
- 40:41Speaker 2: in reverse, lightning McQueen limping across without any tires to
- 40:46Speaker 2: the finish line. That's the win.
- 40:48Speaker 4: That was the solid reference.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Greg, Thank you. I've watched that movie nine hundred times.
- 40:52Speaker 2: I still watch it as an adults. My kids are
- 40:55Speaker 2: twenty three and we all gather to watch it. It's
- 40:57Speaker 2: so good. He should have won. They could have gone
- 41:00Speaker 2: back and gotten the king after you. But I agree
- 41:02Speaker 2: with you, but that wasn't the top kids as good
- 41:05Speaker 2: a lessons. What happened. Then that's what the manors are.
- 41:09Speaker 2: They're jumping on their axles trying. They're gonna get in
- 41:12Speaker 2: the playoffs that way.
- 41:13Speaker 4: Yeah, But then they'll get hot.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Because in a short series with three or four starting
- 41:18Speaker 2: pitchers they have, they can win them. They can win
- 41:20Speaker 2: a five and a seven game series with the pitching
- 41:22Speaker 2: they have, but they can't win and doing what they've
- 41:24Speaker 2: done the last two nights on the bases at the
- 41:27Speaker 2: plate decisions. Yeah, exhausting is a great word adjustment.
- 41:32Speaker 5: Yes, except we still have passion.
- 41:37Speaker 2: That's gluttony, isn't it glutton for punishment? I think, but
- 41:39Speaker 2: we all Yeah.
- 41:41Speaker 4: I push all my own bruises.
- 41:43Speaker 2: They're still going to win the division. They still are.
- 41:45Speaker 2: Up next, Blake Price from Vancouver talking about the World
- 41:48Speaker 2: Cup experience up there. But hear firsthand what they thought
- 41:51Speaker 2: of the World Cup. Canada played two matches, just like
- 41:54Speaker 2: the United States to play two matches here, the white
- 41:56Speaker 2: capped future. The Canucks offseason with the crack and are
- 41:58Speaker 2: getting in their new GM. That the Kraken just that
- 42:01Speaker 2: the Canucks just fired as their GM. Blake Price is
- 42:04Speaker 2: up next twelve thirty. You'll hear the pregame show at
- 42:06Speaker 2: one o'clock Fortugal. Excuse me, Morocco against France and the
- 42:10Speaker 2: World Cup quarterfinals live on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Now from the Star Rentals Sports to us your ninety
- 42:21Speaker 1: three point three KJRFM sports headlines.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Good morning, thanks for listening. Headlines brought to you by
- 42:26Speaker 2: Frostbured Corps. I choose chill. Blake Price from Vancouver will
- 42:29Speaker 2: join us right after these headlines. Mariners lost again last night,
- 42:32Speaker 2: thirty three times of plate, no runs, five total hits
- 42:36Speaker 2: against the converted reliever and three other Marlins relievers too
- 42:40Speaker 2: nothing loss Seattle one game over five hundred. They played
- 42:43Speaker 2: the final of the three game series against the Marlins
- 42:45Speaker 2: in Miami three forty today with Bryce Miller on the
- 42:47Speaker 2: hill for the Mariners. Carolina Mulkova ended American Coco Gross
- 42:52Speaker 2: Wimbledon this morning with a three set tiebreaker win at
- 42:55Speaker 2: the semifinals of the All England Club outside London. She's
- 42:58Speaker 2: the fourth check woman in the last six years to
- 43:00Speaker 2: the Wimbledon final. The new highest paid player in the NHL,
- 43:05Speaker 2: he's now twenty one year old Leo Carlson. He made
- 43:09Speaker 2: nine hundred and fifty thousand dollars last year in his
- 43:11Speaker 2: entry level contract. Now he's gonna make eighteen million a
- 43:14Speaker 2: year because Anaheim match Philadelphia's wild offer for the twenty
- 43:16Speaker 2: one year old center ninety million over five years. The
- 43:20Speaker 2: World Cup quarterfinals beginning to day live right here on
- 43:22Speaker 2: ninety three point three KJRFM France and Morocco twelve thirty
- 43:26Speaker 2: pre game show one o'clock kickoff right here on ninety
- 43:29Speaker 2: three point three KJARFM. That England Mexico thriller. The other
- 43:33Speaker 2: night at Estadio Steca had forty five million people watching
- 43:36Speaker 2: between Fox and Telemundo. That's the most watched soccer game ever.
- 43:41Speaker 2: It's two million more than watched Belgium and US for
- 43:43Speaker 2: Monday night. It's on par with the Seahawks Rams NFC
- 43:47Speaker 2: championship game back in January. That's how many people watched
- 43:50Speaker 2: England and Mexico.
- 43:51Speaker 4: Well, let's go, he me, and that's awesome.
- 43:55Speaker 2: The World Cup was also in Vancouver. Blake Price was
- 43:58Speaker 2: in Vancouver. And when I went to Vancouver Thursday night
- 44:02Speaker 2: to watch the World Cup between Switzerland and Algeria, I
- 44:04Speaker 2: found it to be somewhat underwhelming, and I wrote about
- 44:07Speaker 2: that compared to Seattle, and I heard about it from
- 44:10Speaker 2: Blake Price, good friend of mine. I'm always on his
- 44:13Speaker 2: show up in Vancouver. He joined us on the Beacon
- 44:15Speaker 2: plumbing hot on of says securists Price frame up in Vancouver.
- 44:18Speaker 11: Hello, sir, we are not friends, not anymore. Not after
- 44:22Speaker 11: that article, sir.
- 44:23Speaker 2: He called it a hit piece. He put it online.
- 44:26Speaker 2: He trumpeted to all his followers, this is a hit piece,
- 44:29Speaker 2: and I got so much gruff from everybody in.
- 44:31Speaker 4: BC on Blake, good job, go get.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Them, Blake, for all the years I've come on your
- 44:36Speaker 2: show and just gone on and on to the break
- 44:38Speaker 2: of dawn about how much I love Whistler and Vancouver.
- 44:41Speaker 11: And it betrayl Greg you have You're right, all that
- 44:45Speaker 11: is truan, it just felt like betrayal.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Well, explain to us then, and I did in my
- 44:51Speaker 2: story for the News Tribune, try to explain the mitigating
- 44:53Speaker 2: circumstances to that game Thursday day after Canada game. I mean,
- 44:56Speaker 2: I was supposed to meet Sakaris and Matt just begged
- 44:59Speaker 2: out because he a little under the weather the day
- 45:01Speaker 2: after Canada Day. But yes, explain to me and everybody
- 45:05Speaker 2: what you took in as the scene of the Vancouver
- 45:08Speaker 2: World Cup experience.
- 45:10Speaker 11: Well, you know, I've been trying to caution every's really
- 45:14Speaker 11: proud of the job that we did in Vancouver putting
- 45:16Speaker 11: it off, but I've tried not to get to confrontational
- 45:19Speaker 11: because I think a lot of the cities have put
- 45:21Speaker 11: on great shows that Trott did a good job, you know,
- 45:24Speaker 11: in a smaller stadium outlook. Obviously Seattle having the States
- 45:28Speaker 11: there on a couple of occasions.
- 45:30Speaker 3: Just the fabulous, massive.
- 45:32Speaker 11: Humanity at Lumen and great vibes there as well, and
- 45:37Speaker 11: even some of the big dogs too in Dallas and
- 45:40Speaker 11: so Fi both put on good shows considering you know,
- 45:43Speaker 11: what those stadiums look like. It's just a different feel,
- 45:46Speaker 11: I think than what we saw at Lumen at at
- 45:48Speaker 11: BC Place. But yeah, I think haven't been Olympic hosts
- 45:54Speaker 11: sixteen years ago and host the other big events throughout
- 45:58Speaker 11: the years has given Vancouver a template on how to
- 46:02Speaker 11: put on these big events. As you know, it's a
- 46:04Speaker 11: small downtown course, it's pretty walkable. Seattle is fairly walkable,
- 46:08Speaker 11: but from the you know, from the you know, say
- 46:11Speaker 11: from the West End all the way down to the States.
- 46:12Speaker 11: That's a bit of a jaunt in Seattle, Whereas you know,
- 46:15Speaker 11: you can pretty much make it anywhere from in the
- 46:17Speaker 11: downtown circle of uh it's basically an island. In Vancouver,
- 46:20Speaker 11: you can kind of make it everywhere.
- 46:22Speaker 3: So I think that adds to some.
- 46:24Speaker 11: Of the the walkability and just the ease of putting
- 46:28Speaker 11: on an event like this. And hey, both cities have
- 46:31Speaker 11: just great backdrops as well, so we we know how
- 46:34Speaker 11: to wow the visitors when they come in and get
- 46:36Speaker 11: a you know, one week.
- 46:37Speaker 3: Glimpse of Seattle or Vancouver.
- 46:38Speaker 2: There's no city in the world prettier than Vancouver. I mean,
- 46:41Speaker 2: Seattle's close, but man, Vancouver is so beautiful downtown with
- 46:44Speaker 2: the mountains in the ocean.
- 46:45Speaker 11: If we could scooch the mountains a little closer to
- 46:47Speaker 11: the Seattle, you'd have an exact replicant.
- 46:49Speaker 2: But that's right. Bake BC Place, I know it's older, smaller.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Fifty two thousand was the capacity for the World Cup.
- 46:56Speaker 2: I think it's a beautiful place to watch a game,
- 46:59Speaker 2: both foot all in soccer in the World Cup. First
- 47:03Speaker 2: of all, I wish that the teflon roof was the
- 47:05Speaker 2: fabric roof was open, but it was raining in fifty
- 47:07Speaker 2: eight degrees fahrenheit that night I was there. But the
- 47:11Speaker 2: white Caps are trying to We're gonna talk about the
- 47:13Speaker 2: white Caps in second. But the suitability of BC Place
- 47:17Speaker 2: and do you find it to be outdated and something
- 47:21Speaker 2: that Vancouverites are not proud of or what's the deal
- 47:24Speaker 2: on BC Place? Because I really like it. When I
- 47:26Speaker 2: go in there.
- 47:28Speaker 3: When it's full, it's great.
- 47:29Speaker 11: Now they've renovated it a lot, it's still got the
- 47:32Speaker 11: old sort of Kingdom bones to it, but it's been
- 47:36Speaker 11: fully updated. A lot of concrete still visible, but you know,
- 47:39Speaker 11: they put some lipstick on the place and it's totally
- 47:43Speaker 11: fine in terms of its modernity. But it's only good
- 47:48Speaker 11: when there's thirty thousand more plus thirty thousand plus in
- 47:54Speaker 11: the stadium. Anything less than that and it feels empty,
- 47:58Speaker 11: even when, as the white Cam to do, they try
- 48:00Speaker 11: to just sell the low bowl at the lower bollst
- 48:03Speaker 11: twenty seven thousand or so for the white Caps. That
- 48:06Speaker 11: looks okay, That looks okay, but you know you can't
- 48:08Speaker 11: help but have your eyes go to the massively empty
- 48:12Speaker 11: upper deck, you know, and I know that. I think
- 48:14Speaker 11: the Sounders do that from time to time, so they
- 48:15Speaker 11: know it's going to be a low, low demand match.
- 48:18Speaker 11: A little close the upper as well, but you know,
- 48:22Speaker 11: if you know you're getting the big crowds. Great for
- 48:24Speaker 11: MESSI where the white Caps went on a run the
- 48:26Speaker 11: Champions League file, I mean, all that stuff was great,
- 48:29Speaker 11: but you know, a Wednesday match versus Minnesota United, you
- 48:33Speaker 11: know it would be way better to be in a
- 48:35Speaker 11: place like Portland's Providence Park or something like that. You know,
- 48:38Speaker 11: like that that is just so much fun quaint, you know.
- 48:42Speaker 3: I love that. To me. That's one of the hidden gems.
- 48:45Speaker 11: Of MLS is down in Portland there but something cozy,
- 48:48Speaker 11: you know, and and something they can sell out and
- 48:51Speaker 11: have some modern suite sabil I speaking in Minnesota. I
- 48:55Speaker 11: did a game there for Apple TV about a month ago,
- 48:59Speaker 11: you know, and it's like a.
- 49:01Speaker 3: Mini so far. It's not big, you know, see twenty
- 49:03Speaker 3: two thousand.
- 49:04Speaker 11: But you know it's it's got all the modern bells
- 49:07Speaker 11: and whistles and sweets and all that sort of stuff.
- 49:09Speaker 11: And I think the white Caps want in on something
- 49:12Speaker 11: like that.
- 49:13Speaker 5: Well, Blake Price, who is joining us here, obviously a
- 49:16Speaker 5: legendary broadcaster up in Vancouver.
- 49:18Speaker 2: Jackson the mail for that, Blake Jackson the mail.
- 49:23Speaker 4: I didn't write a hit piece yet, so we can
- 49:25Speaker 4: still be friends.
- 49:27Speaker 5: Yeah, I wanted to ask about your you know, a
- 49:31Speaker 5: personal experience that you've had with the World Cup being here.
- 49:34Speaker 5: We've been so blessed with the way that Seattle has
- 49:37Speaker 5: shown out and just to go back to what you
- 49:40Speaker 5: were saying the white Caps have done, we have seen
- 49:43Speaker 5: the Sounders do some similar things where they have covered
- 49:46Speaker 5: up the upper bowl and only so the Lower Bowl
- 49:50Speaker 5: and the fan hood here for soccer is unbelievable.
- 49:55Speaker 4: I want to ask about the international piece of.
- 49:57Speaker 5: It, though, because so many people have traveled here, and
- 50:00Speaker 5: we've had a wonderful experience with those who have traveled
- 50:04Speaker 5: from various different countries here in Seattle, and I'm wondering
- 50:08Speaker 5: what it has been like for you up there.
- 50:12Speaker 11: Oh, I mean it's I was surprised, you know, I
- 50:16Speaker 11: read a lot of the pieces that I'm sure that
- 50:18Speaker 11: you two read. You know about you know, tickets unsold
- 50:23Speaker 11: and you know, the political boundaries and hurdles for people
- 50:27Speaker 11: to travel to the Head States at this time, and
- 50:31Speaker 11: I was genuinely curious, slash a little bit worried about.
- 50:34Speaker 3: What it would ultimately look like.
- 50:35Speaker 11: And and in the end, I mean ten out of ten,
- 50:38Speaker 11: almost no notes, you know, really for the way that
- 50:41Speaker 11: the tournament itself has has rolled out, it's been a
- 50:44Speaker 11: lot of fun. A few speed wobbles or you know,
- 50:47Speaker 11: off field incidents and all that sort of stuff. Have
- 50:49Speaker 11: I think, you know, they've been hot for a moment,
- 50:51Speaker 11: They've had a couple of days aheadlines, but I think
- 50:53Speaker 11: we've the matches have ultimately won the day. And seeing
- 50:57Speaker 11: the people that ultimately did travel. There was a fair
- 51:00Speaker 11: amount of travel here has blown me away. I mean
- 51:04Speaker 11: it was little Bogata a couple of days ago. Here
- 51:06Speaker 11: in Vancouver for that Round A sixteen match, we were
- 51:10Speaker 11: absolutely the yellow Colombian kits were absolutely.
- 51:14Speaker 3: Everywhere, and and just the good vibes.
- 51:18Speaker 11: He was a little bit more pre knockout stage, like
- 51:21Speaker 11: when everybody's in the group stage and you can sort
- 51:23Speaker 11: of absorb maybe one loss.
- 51:24Speaker 2: And you know, you're saying, right, yeah.
- 51:28Speaker 11: Exactly, it's a little bit more razor's edge in the
- 51:31Speaker 11: knockout stage. But still, I you know, I saw Colombian
- 51:34Speaker 11: still with smiles on their faces after the defeat to Switzerland,
- 51:37Speaker 11: and I know people were talking about that down in
- 51:39Speaker 11: Mexico City, even where for the most part, there's always
- 51:42Speaker 11: one bad apple. But you know, the Mexican fans that
- 51:45Speaker 11: as Techa were being quite nice, cordial to the English
- 51:47Speaker 11: fans who have their own reputation, of course, but you know,
- 51:50Speaker 11: it's pretty good loving considering considering how people take this
- 51:54Speaker 11: sport seriously around the globe.
- 51:55Speaker 2: It could have even been larger in Vancouver, of course,
- 51:57Speaker 2: if Canada had not lost to Switch and in the
- 52:00Speaker 2: group stage and then their knockout matches would have been
- 52:02Speaker 2: in Vancouver. That game I was that Thursday night was
- 52:05Speaker 2: supposed to be Canada hosting the ground of Susten Blake.
- 52:09Speaker 2: Chris Scarce of Price, a long time Vancouver radio hosts
- 52:12Speaker 2: joining us on the Beacon plumbing hotline from BC not
- 52:16Speaker 2: the white Caps. When I was up there was talking
- 52:17Speaker 2: to Foreign Lawsy, our good friend TSN. What's the future
- 52:21Speaker 2: of the white Caps Las Vegas. Somebody gonna snoop scoop
- 52:24Speaker 2: them up? An investor from there is the public have
- 52:26Speaker 2: an appetite for a new soccer only venue like you mentioned,
- 52:29Speaker 2: maybe smaller that doesn't have an empty feel when BC
- 52:32Speaker 2: Place is impact. They've got Thomas Mueller. Now, the team
- 52:37Speaker 2: has been very good, I mean both in MLS and
- 52:40Speaker 2: outside competitions. What do you think as it stands now,
- 52:42Speaker 2: it's going to happen to the Caps.
- 52:45Speaker 11: It's a complicated set of circumstances here. They've been trying
- 52:49Speaker 11: to sell for a couple of years now, and there's
- 52:52Speaker 11: been reticence to get a buyer to never mind to
- 52:56Speaker 11: the finish line. But even close to the finish line,
- 52:59Speaker 11: we're talking with the two differences or some of the
- 53:01Speaker 11: differences between Seattle and Vancouver. One of the differences is
- 53:03Speaker 11: those beautiful mountains that I said are all scooched up
- 53:05Speaker 11: against the city also prevent expansion within the city lands
- 53:10Speaker 11: of such a premium because we're sort of wedged in
- 53:12Speaker 11: between those mountains and the ocean, and Seattle's got a
- 53:15Speaker 11: little bit more flat ground to work with. You know,
- 53:17Speaker 11: it's just tough to find spare lots that can fit
- 53:21Speaker 11: brand new stadiums. And if you do have a lot
- 53:23Speaker 11: that bag, of course it is worth so much money.
- 53:26Speaker 11: So the constant of buying the franchise and again the
- 53:30Speaker 11: owners want out buying the franchise and then building a stadium,
- 53:34Speaker 11: and stadium subsidies are not what they are in Canada
- 53:38Speaker 11: to compare to the United States. I've been back to
- 53:40Speaker 11: my Minneapolis. Minneapolis has got a separate stadium for every
- 53:43Speaker 11: single one of their franchises Basketball, NBA, baseball, football, Like
- 53:47Speaker 11: there's stadiums everywhere for goodness sake, and that would never
- 53:50Speaker 11: happen in the Canadian city. They're just not going to
- 53:52Speaker 11: write those same sort of checks. But we are starting
- 53:54Speaker 11: to see some collaborative or some collaboration now with the
- 53:58Speaker 11: local indigenous bands and local governments trying to maybe not
- 54:02Speaker 11: write a check, but making the atmosphere, the environment, the
- 54:07Speaker 11: financial atmosphere that much more conducive to building, you know,
- 54:12Speaker 11: whether that's tax concessions.
- 54:14Speaker 3: Or what have you.
- 54:15Speaker 11: Maybe maybe free land without writing a check, no per se,
- 54:19Speaker 11: but actually just saying you can have a one hundred
- 54:22Speaker 11: and ninety nine year lease on this land or something
- 54:24Speaker 11: to that effect. I'm making that up, but I'm seeing
- 54:26Speaker 11: those are the kinds of things you could brainstorm that
- 54:28Speaker 11: would make things a little bit easier.
- 54:30Speaker 3: So we'll see.
- 54:32Speaker 11: I'm hearing murmurs of good news and high level government
- 54:35Speaker 11: meetings coming in the next few days. But it's a
- 54:38Speaker 11: great it's a great market.
- 54:41Speaker 2: You know.
- 54:41Speaker 11: I think Vegas deserves a team. A rash Marcesy, the
- 54:45Speaker 11: veteran writer from Vegas and Los Angeles, came up and
- 54:50Speaker 11: wrote a peace and you know, he's seen it from
- 54:53Speaker 11: the Vegas lens, and he said, you know, Vegas deserves
- 54:56Speaker 11: a team, like we're ready for a team, but probably
- 54:58Speaker 11: shouldn't be this team.
- 55:00Speaker 5: You know.
- 55:00Speaker 11: I obviously I've got some bias here, but I think
- 55:03Speaker 11: that's a good sentim it. I mean, I think Vegas
- 55:06Speaker 11: is probably a good market for MLS to be in,
- 55:08Speaker 11: but it would be a shame to leave behind a
- 55:11Speaker 11: market that has hosted the Olympics, has now you know,
- 55:14Speaker 11: blown the doors off the World Cup in terms of
- 55:16Speaker 11: hosting PROWSS. It would seem odd for Major League Soccer
- 55:20Speaker 11: not to be able to work. So I think it
- 55:23Speaker 11: can work. We need some of the corporations. Hey, one
- 55:25Speaker 11: of the things we've seen, and I think markets like
- 55:28Speaker 11: Seattle and well really all of North America investment from
- 55:32Speaker 11: corporations in soccer and the place to be like in
- 55:37Speaker 11: a lot of these medium sized markets at the very least,
- 55:40Speaker 11: you know, if you've got a business partner or town,
- 55:43Speaker 11: you want to take them out of the town, take
- 55:45Speaker 11: them to the NFL game, probably take them to the
- 55:46Speaker 11: baseball game. So Americana, But you know, has it been
- 55:52Speaker 11: in the top of mind for people to take their
- 55:54Speaker 11: business lunch or business dinner out to a Major league
- 55:57Speaker 11: soccer match? And I think the World Couple really helped that.
- 56:01Speaker 11: Attendants has already up since the World Cup got announced.
- 56:03Speaker 11: Attendant's up thirty three percent of Major League Soccer. The
- 56:06Speaker 11: trajectory is already there for Major League Soccer. But this
- 56:08Speaker 11: is a turbo boost, and I can't wait to see
- 56:12Speaker 11: what em alass looks like after this World Cup. But
- 56:16Speaker 11: in Vancouver and to a degree in place to Lake Seattle,
- 56:19Speaker 11: is at the cool spot to bring your date, your
- 56:21Speaker 11: business partner or whatever all that, and I think there's
- 56:24Speaker 11: a chance the answer is yes, and then we're going
- 56:25Speaker 11: to see that investment now in the product that maybe
- 56:29Speaker 11: we saw it at a decent level, but not at.
- 56:32Speaker 3: An excellent level.
- 56:33Speaker 2: A cooler spot perhaps lately than the Canucks and a
- 56:36Speaker 2: Canucks game would be. You know, you're chuckling, but I
- 56:40Speaker 2: have to ask you. Were you laughing when the crack
- 56:42Speaker 2: and hired Patrick Alvin as an assistant GM and vice
- 56:45Speaker 2: president last month after you and Vancouver the Canucks fired
- 56:48Speaker 2: him out of town in April.
- 56:51Speaker 10: No, I think that's his slot.
- 56:52Speaker 11: He's not a bad guy by any starts of the imagination,
- 56:55Speaker 11: and he's got a hockey intelligence as well. So but
- 56:59Speaker 11: you know, some assists and coaches, some defensive coordinators Gregor
- 57:03Speaker 11: meant to be just that and not meant to have
- 57:05Speaker 11: the big whistles and to be in charge. I think
- 57:07Speaker 11: Patrick Alvin might be that kind of a guy that's
- 57:10Speaker 11: that's not embarrassing.
- 57:11Speaker 2: That's not bad.
- 57:12Speaker 11: I just I don't see him as having sort of
- 57:14Speaker 11: the vision and the moxie to be in the big chair.
- 57:18Speaker 11: But I think he could be fabulous in that role
- 57:20Speaker 11: for the Seattle Crackins. What about the Canucks? Where do
- 57:22Speaker 11: they go from here? It's that franchise. I mean, we've
- 57:27Speaker 11: talked to you and I we Matt have talked about it.
- 57:29Speaker 11: But where do they go from here? After just a
- 57:31Speaker 11: bottoming out of a season? I mean they are in
- 57:37Speaker 11: the bottom on purpose though you know you you if
- 57:39Speaker 11: you're going to get there, you better get there on
- 57:41Speaker 11: purpose because if you if things have gone so wrong
- 57:43Speaker 11: that you end up at the bottom and you didn't
- 57:45Speaker 11: want to be there, my goodness, that's when it hits
- 57:47Speaker 11: the fan. But they wanted to be there, it was intentional.
- 57:50Speaker 11: I think they would like to see some trying this
- 57:53Speaker 11: season do what you know, say a Chicago did this year.
- 57:57Speaker 11: They showed well in full about Christmas time and then
- 58:01Speaker 11: made a couple moves and said okay, we're out again
- 58:03Speaker 11: and sunk back to the bottom. I think a trajectory
- 58:05Speaker 11: like that for the Connects is sort of what they
- 58:07Speaker 11: would like to see. You see some young players put
- 58:09Speaker 11: up some numbers and show some traction in their careers
- 58:12Speaker 11: till about January sell off, some veterans sink back down
- 58:15Speaker 11: into a good NHL draft lottery spot. But you know
- 58:19Speaker 11: there's going to be a couple of years of that,
- 58:21Speaker 11: and then the drafts over the next couple of years
- 58:22Speaker 11: look pretty decent. If they can stay on the podium
- 58:25Speaker 11: in terms of top three draft picks, they'll be just fine.
- 58:29Speaker 11: But this is the first time they've done this. Willingly
- 58:30Speaker 11: gone to the bottom to you know, burn it to
- 58:33Speaker 11: the ground, build the foundation and rise back up. And
- 58:37Speaker 11: everybody's just hoping that the right people are on the
- 58:39Speaker 11: job for it. And they've got a lot of green
- 58:41Speaker 11: bodies and the management chairs now x you know, Conuck
- 58:45Speaker 11: Royalty in the Sideen Twins, Ryan Johnson a former Knuck
- 58:48Speaker 11: in the general manager's chair. But they've never had these gigs,
- 58:50Speaker 11: so we'll see if they've if they've got the the
- 58:54Speaker 11: the right stuff to make it work.
- 58:56Speaker 2: How's that work? Brian Johnson's a GM. But the sadines
- 58:59Speaker 2: are what the president of Hockey operator who's got the
- 59:02Speaker 2: final say and the siting's really running it.
- 59:06Speaker 11: The Sitding Twins have the final say, but the work's
- 59:09Speaker 11: being done by Ryan Johnson, I think, you know. And
- 59:12Speaker 11: he's been in management now for a while as an AGM,
- 59:15Speaker 11: and he was in charge of the Ahl franchise as well,
- 59:18Speaker 11: so he's got the management chops whereas the Sedens do not.
- 59:22Speaker 11: But they've got very good instincts. They You know how
- 59:25Speaker 11: we always say culture starts at the very top. Well,
- 59:27Speaker 11: usually we mean ownership as well. Ownership has its own
- 59:32Speaker 11: issues here in Vancouver, but the Citing Twins are top
- 59:35Speaker 11: of the top in terms of character. So there's a
- 59:38Speaker 11: hope that they become a sort of muffler, if you will,
- 59:41Speaker 11: from whatever might be coming from ownership, and they create
- 59:44Speaker 11: a false peak at least of good culture running down
- 59:47Speaker 11: from them at the very least Scan Chean's the owner.
- 59:49Speaker 11: That's pretty tough to do, but you put those two
- 59:52Speaker 11: guys in place at president and maybe that culture shift
- 59:55Speaker 11: starts to happen within the organization as well.
- 59:57Speaker 2: Oh yeah, the owner. We don't have enough time to
- 59:59Speaker 2: even talk about there before before I let you go
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: on the text line. I won't be able to answer
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: this in the next segment. You would the four two
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: five ass would Vancouver redevelop the sites that old Empire
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: swang are maybe even move down to Richmond or Delta
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: for a new soccer only stadium.
- 1:00:17Speaker 11: No, I would say the answer is no for pretty
- 1:00:20Speaker 11: much all that. I was okay with that that Empire site,
- 1:00:23Speaker 11: but from what I understand geologically, there's even some issues
- 1:00:26Speaker 11: there with you know, underground streams and it just could
- 1:00:30Speaker 11: get messy, and that's you know, they can't really afford
- 1:00:32Speaker 11: to do messy right now. They need a little more
- 1:00:34Speaker 11: plug and play. So and then going into the burbs, uh,
- 1:00:39Speaker 11: probably not. The demographics of the White Capstans are pretty urban.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:00:45Speaker 11: They're the what we used to call the skinny jeans,
- 1:00:48Speaker 11: beard wearing folk, you know, Portland alone there and so
- 1:00:57Speaker 11: uh you know, those are the people that use trans
- 1:00:59Speaker 11: that want to close to the transit lines and all.
- 1:01:01Speaker 11: So being more urban is probably the best way to go.
- 1:01:06Speaker 11: There's been some talk for those that have visited Vancouver
- 1:01:09Speaker 11: going to Kitslando sort of the beach area, which is
- 1:01:11Speaker 11: still stone's throw from the downtown course so that's not
- 1:01:13Speaker 11: the end of the.
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: World, but.
- 1:01:15Speaker 11: But that's that would be a waterfront lot potentially there
- 1:01:18Speaker 11: as well. But I think something near what we call
- 1:01:23Speaker 11: skytrain the subway lines here, I think would be pretty critical.
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: Blake, happy, hikin. Enjoy the rest of your summer. It's
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: fun to have switch rolls and I'm asking you questions
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: for a change that was neat so Hi, I like it.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: Hi to'm man, everybody you know where to find me.
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: Thanks man, a pleasure. Thank guys.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: Blake Price, he insecures Matt secure's secure some Price show
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: an institution up in Vancouver sports radio. Now they're on
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: a live streaming. I'm on the show all the time
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: at talks Seahawks and I end up talking about it.
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: I think he's a new friend of the show.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: He's great. Yeah, Matt, Matt too. Every time Matt's down
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: or anywhere near here, he calls me, we go out.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: I go up there the same thing. I go out
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: with Matt and Blake, and I've been invited to their
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: hockey shows and their hockey parties they had for the
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: Four Nations Cup. Yeah, he's the longtime friends.
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: We like to make friends here at this station.
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: We do. But thanks four to five for that, because
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: I could not have answered the redevelopment site for potential
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: new White Cap Stadium, So thank you for asking it.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: In real time, so we could ask Blake when we
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: come back, your chance to be a part of the show.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: We'll read back more of those texts, including a lot
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: of them talking about the Mariners, and not a lot
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: of them are good unfortunately. Yeah, they're still in first place.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: I do want to say that we should continue to mention.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: That your text. Up next twelve thirty, we're going to
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: go to the pregame show live for the one o'clock
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: match of the World Cup quarterfinals between France and Morocco
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: will be live here on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 1:03:01Speaker 12: They probably will win the division, but then what they
- 1:03:04Speaker 12: hang another banner made out of army blankets. And when
- 1:03:10Speaker 12: we talk about analytics, you know what analytics show that
- 1:03:12Speaker 12: they will never win the World.
- 1:03:14Speaker 8: Series the last fifty years.
- 1:03:18Speaker 12: That's your analytics, and what they sucker you in with
- 1:03:22Speaker 12: a plastic ferry boat and a filet of fish sandwich.
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: Please out.
- 1:03:30Speaker 13: I'm almost at that point to where I just don't
- 1:03:34Speaker 13: care anymore about the Seattle Mariners really and truthfully, it's
- 1:03:39Speaker 13: just frustrating. It's aggravating year after year, the excuses, the
- 1:03:47Speaker 13: marine layer, the lack of hitting, the bad coaching, I
- 1:03:53Speaker 13: cannot wait for Seahawks football really quickly.
- 1:03:59Speaker 5: There's still first place I will I will say that,
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: I mean, and then even our dismayed listener who's sent
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: in that lovely talk back and by the way, I
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: love getting them, so thank you for sending them in.
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: Of course, they're going to win the division, and then
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: you're still mad.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm of the belief that they win the division,
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: get in the playoffs. With their pitching staff, they're okay,
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: they'll be okay. I don't know if they'll go to
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: the World Series. They do need to hit, and you
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: need to score to do that, yes, but yeah, if
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: you don't know how to do it, you go to
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: the iHeart radio app, download it for free, and in
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: the bottom of it there's a red microphone button. You
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: press that button, you leave a message for thirty seconds
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: or fewer, and we will play it. That's for you
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: at eleven thirty every day, where we also do our
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: text line four nine four five one sponsored by Tacoma
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: Dodge two five three. I went to the game last
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: Tuesday when they scored eight runs without a home run. Yeah,
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: that was the first time in four years they did that.
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: I was so optimate. Did they finally figured out to
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: win without the long ball? Optimistic? And Mariners should have
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: known better after fifty years. Can we get Mike McDonald
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: the manager manage the Mariners?
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: Wouldn't that be a fun little switcher rue that we
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: could do.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: He was a high school middle infielder and oh he
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: knows Georgia, he knows baseball. Yeah, he said he was
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: too short, not athletic enough to play, but he also
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: was a safety and running back in football, and he
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: was neither big or fast to do that even.
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly, Yeah, I would just go to the website
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: how many two bays dot com and just see what
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: you can do at maybe a considered undersize size three successes.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: Every KJR host keeps saying the M's are gonna win
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: the division and flip the switch in the playoffs. I
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: must be watching a different Mariners game than you. Horrible managing,
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: bad defense, and no clutch hitting isn't a recipe for
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: playoff baseball. The thing is that the division is so
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: bad that they're good. Like I said, like McQueen cross backwards.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: They are going to win a division almost by default,
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: almost in spite of themselves, almost despite themselves. Yeah, two
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: eight reading off Mariners stats at MLB tell me why
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: we should expect this team to be a World Series contender.
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: Another season of Lucy moving the football for Charlie Brown,
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: same old Mariners.
- 1:06:22Speaker 5: It is the one thing I would take away the
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: second talkback that we got is that it unfortunately people
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: are getting to apathy and that's the opposite of love,
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: and I am worried for that to happen for this team.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: But they're still filling the park, they're still making money.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: The attendance is up over last year. Were darn, you're
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: sold out for the I know the Blue Jays are
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: in town and there were BC Canadian folks coming down.
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: But I was there for one of those games though,
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: and it was the majority Mariners.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: It wasn't it wasn't the takeover.
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: No, it was not the game that I went to.
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: So, I mean, they're hot in this thing where they're
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: making money. They're not having to pay the luxury tax
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: because they're not spending enough on their payroll, and they're
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: winning just enough to be in hell, they're in first place. Yes,
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: the division is horrible, they're one game over five hundred,
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: but they still are in first place, so the games
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: will mean something in August and September, so the yard
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: will be full. As a business model, it's working. It
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: drives people crazy, the fifty four percent, all of it.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: But as a business model, they're keeping their costs lower
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: by not paying on the payroll as high as some clubs.
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: They're in the middle. They're not paying the luxury tax
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: because they're not above that threat. In fact, they are
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: receiving luxury tax revenue. That's how Major League Baseball revenue
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: sharing works. If you go above the luxury tax, every
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: team that doesn't pay the tax gets luxury tax money
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: from the Dodgers and the Yankees and the Cubs and
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: the Red Sox. That's where they are. So as a
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: business proposition, it's working. As a fan proposition, it is
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: frustrating as hell because you see what the potential is
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: in what Yeah, they're making money, so spend it on bat.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: Yeah they're making money, get a reliever, or we could
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: count it right.
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: And and that is also another thing that I don't
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: think was so accessible during our time growing up in
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: baseball fanhood was the financials, and now everyone can know
- 1:08:20Speaker 5: about it. I will say, though, to the first tokback
- 1:08:24Speaker 5: person that those ferry boats.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: Are adorable, and I think twenty bucks or so. I
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: don't know they were.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: They ran out when I was so I couldn't get one.
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: But also, yeah, your fish filet or chicken tenders and
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: fries whatever you get in them.
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: And then also then it's a fun piece.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: The Mariners are averaging thirty four thousand, five hundred and
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: thirty two people per game per game with their twenty
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: dollars beers and their fifty dollars parking, and per game
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: they're getting thirty four thousand, five.
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: Hundred, So it's an investment for a.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: Fan that's ten in the major leagues, tenth out of
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: thirty teams.
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: And then there what were you what was the payroll again?
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: Sorry, middle of the pack. They're about I think it's
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: fifteenth out of thirty teen.
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: But tenth and revenue tenth and attendance, oh, attendance. The revenue, well,
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: I would just assume revenue.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: Well, not exactly, but yes, we did, Chris and I
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: did the revenue piece at the beginning of the season.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: I can't remember where they were, but they were in
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: the top half if I'm not mistaken. In local revenue yeah,
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: but they're right behind Atlanta, who's just rolling. They want
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: a few hundred people fewer per game in Atlanta. They're
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: head of Boston. This is a smaller park, Fenway Parks
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: thirty four thousand. Yeah, yeah, so a suth that it's
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: only going to get them thirty four thousand. But they're
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: they're ahead of Milwaukee, who's just rolling. Another great season
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: for the Brewers. They they draw more than Milwaukee, they
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: draw more than Houston, they draw more than Texas, they
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: draw more than Saint Louis, who's been down in recent years.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: Didn't draw way more than Detroit or Cincinnati, or Cleveland
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: or Chicago, and the White Sox. It is the top
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: ten if you're curious. The top teams in average attendance.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: The Dodgers are averaging fifty thousand per game, seven hundred
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: per game. San Diego forty one thousand. That's almost capacity
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: in their yard. The Yankees average over forty thousand a game.
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: Soto's Toronto, Philadelphia average thirty nine to three, San Francisco
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: thirty six to nine. The Mets, as bad as they are,
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: average thirty six to three. Then the Cubs and Wrigley
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: Field of thirty five three, which is about capacity there,
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: the Atlanta thirty four to nine, and then Seattle thirty
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: four to five. So as a business proposition, it's working
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: the fireworks nights, the Bobbleheads, the fifty four.
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: They do an amazing job.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: No nights, no they Going to a ballgame is great,
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: and there is a large segment of the population who
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: go to the game to for a night out at
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: the yard under the stars, in a beautiful park, in
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: a beautiful city, in a beautiful summer.
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: Stars aren't even out at this point this summer at
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: the end of a game because.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: The Mariners don't score runs. The Mariners games last two
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: hours and it's still whiteout when the games. That's a phenomenon.
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: Okay, but even a three hour game, you're still watching
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: the sunset and it's beautiful.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's pretty cool to go if you haven't done it.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: If you're in the third deck of T Mobile Park,
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: Oh and the infant, just walk out behind you around
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: sunset and watch the sunset over Elliott Bay from the
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: back of the third deck. It's pretty amazing.
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: I had my cousin from Texas here this past week
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: and she and I went to a game last Thursday,
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: actually a week ago, and she couldn't believe it. We
- 1:11:36Speaker 5: watched Humpy, we were all rooting for Humpy, and then
- 1:11:41Speaker 5: the way the meritors won that game was on a
- 1:11:43Speaker 5: basis loaded walks.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: Seepy Humpy and the ferry boats and all that stuff
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: that drives the baseball fan crazy. That people love that
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: and they come to that, and it doesn't entice the
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: ownership to spend more money on the payroll because they're
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: making money over what they're doing.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: That's very fair. That is very fair, and it is
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: a good complaint.
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: I'm just saying that whatever they do off the baseball
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: side is pretty fun.
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: It's working. Analytics don't drive our decisions. Analytics can support
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: our decisions. Mike drop from Mike McDonald wow. Ms take
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: a hit, Eric and kitsep County. Thank you. Eric. I'm
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: two five three. I'm fifty nine. I was a good athlete,
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: played soccer, wrestling in baseball. I also went camping, hiking, hunting,
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: played in the dirt, put off a ton of fireworks,
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: and worked a job. Kids need to be kids. It's
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: a shames what happened to youth sports today.
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: It is well put Yeah, I'm singing it with my
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: niece and nephew, both of them. My niece is nine.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: When we come back, we usually go to Ian Feriness,
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: but he is off today because we're going straight up
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: to the World Cup at twelve thirties. Next, we're going
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: to talk about another reminder, how football ruins the lives
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: of quality, a life of many, many, many NFL players.
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: There's more scientific evidence about that. We'll talk about that next.
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: And there's a retreat going on in the mountains of
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: Idaho that could affect the Seahawks sale. Coming up on
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: ninety three point three KJRFF. Welcome back, Greg VALVN. Justin
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: McIntyre with you until twelve thirty, taking you right up
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: to pregame of the World Cup quarterfinal match between France,
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: an overwhelming favorite to win the tournament, against Morocco, a
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: rugged team. It's going to be tough. It's not gonna
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: be a walk for France. I don't think outside Boston.
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: I want to clock kickoff right here on ninety three
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: threeo point three KJRFM. In the NFL, A study released
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: yesterday from Mass General Brigham Hospital in Boston and the
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: Concussion in CTE Foundation that's in Boston. They studied the
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: twenty thousand deaths of NFL players of all causes, and
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: they found that the NFL players are dying of dementia,
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: in Parkinson's disease, neuro degenerative diseases three to four times
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: more often than the general population. That's alarming, to say
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: the least. This goes back to players really want to
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: get all they can when they can in the NFL
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: because it's a not guaranteed league. The contracts are not
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: fully guaranteed like they are in Major League Baseball. We've
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: talked about this so many times. Baseball, you could hit
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: one fifty, but if you signed a contract you hit
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: one thirty five Refs Diner, You're getting paid six point
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: two five million this year guaranteed because that's what the
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: Mariners signed you to. Not so in football, and not
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: everything is guaranteed beyond year you're in. And even sometimes
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: if you don't have tenure in the league three or
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: fewer seasons, even the year you're in is not guaranteed.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: So they when you see them haggling over guaranteed money,
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: and why isn't Witherspoon signed yet? And those guys are
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: trying to get all the guaranteed cash up front they
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: could possibly get.
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: It is a short NFL life average, so three.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: Less than three years three point two actually is the
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: average for all positions. Running back the least the fewest years.
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: Average lifespan of just under three years two point eight
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: for running backs. So you won't know why Kenneth Walker
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: left for Kansas City because they offered him tons more money.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: You get it when you can, because then it stops,
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: and when it stops, your quality of life often goes
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: way way down. And just even small things like forgetting things,
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: or mobility issues or can't get out of bed or
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: I know a lot of NFL players I've covered over
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: the last quarter century who are in that situation, maybe
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: not CTE point of being really debilitated and dangerous to
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: themselves or others, but totally affected. Now there are, of course,
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: many others who aren't. And we'll see him at the
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: celebrity golf down in Tahoe and Tony Romo and those
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: guys that look like they're just fine.
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: But even then, even if you see them being just fine,
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: they not be just fine.
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: Twenty thirty years from now, right and the story of
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: Mike Webster living homeless and can't keep a job and
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: ends up killing himself. And there's stories of all the
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: junior SEAU and anyway, those are all the neuro degenerative issues.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: I say anyway very dismissively. I didn't mean to do that.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: I meant moving on. Those are the neurodegenerative issues that
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: the Concussion and CTE Clinic that Chris, doctor Chris Nowiskey
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: has headed up in Boston is really trying to champion
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: the awareness of that. They're trying to get the NFL
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: to be way better at their settlements or payments to
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: players in alumni, former players well after they're done playing,
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: and not just concussion settlements that law lawyer and courts
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: cases have forced the NFL to do, but real true payments,
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: quality of life payments to help these players get the
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: right medical care and support that they need. The CBA
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: one of the many things that the CBA that the
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: veteran players did not like on the CBA signed that
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: the NFL signed with its union in twenty twenty was
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: the lack of better health care and funding for former
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: players after they're done playing. But I've talked about this.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: The NFL split the union and raised the minimum salary
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: quite substantially, and the rank and file of the union,
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: sixty plus percent make around that minimum and they love
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: the fact they're now making three quarters of a million
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: minimum instead of four hundred thousand. So they took the
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: deal because they're sixty percent of the union and the
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: rest of the veterans are wait, wait, wait, whoa, whoa
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: what about Roger Goodells is lord like authority to give
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: discipline at any point for anything they're consistent with law
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: or the overarching the drug testing policies and the after
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: you're done playing payment and pensions and healthcare, what about
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: those issues? While the rank and file they just wanted
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: the minimum salary raise.
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: Well, I feel like that's the dichotomy of the union
- 1:18:09Speaker 5: when it comes to the younger players who you know,
- 1:18:13Speaker 5: want their voice heard, and the veterans who are actually
- 1:18:17Speaker 5: making the votes. And I've heard that from several players
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: who have been on both sides, right, and it's difficult.
- 1:18:24Speaker 5: What is the majority of what we want right now?
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: And that's the difficulty of having a union that represents
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: all players, regardless of their status, because if most players
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: are making that lower rung of money, that's what they
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: care about most what's the minimum salary. Oh, you're going
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: to raise me from four hundred thousand and seven, and
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: that's great, I'll sign it. We ratified, right.
- 1:18:41Speaker 5: I think that's why we have an eighteen game season
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: this year. But you can smoke pot, you know, And
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: that wasn't the thing. But both of those things were
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: voted on at the same time.
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: Well, they still test during the season.
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: They oh a lot of coorse yes, but but no, it.
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: Base to do the same thing. Baseball's trying to split
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: the union and raise the minimum salary, so they'll get
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: a vote in a salary cap that. We'll see how
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: successful that goes. That Baseball's a whole nother matter. Also
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: in the NFL, Forbes magazine published this week a story
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: about this Allen and Company is it's a New York
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: boutique financial institution in New York. They are the company
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: that the Paul Allen Trust has hired to run the
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: sale of the Seahawks. I think there's a misnomer, a
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: misunderstanding out there that when people saw Allen and Company
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: was the banking company that was going to run the
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: Seahawks sale, they thought that was an arm of Paul Allen. Right,
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: it would make sense. Yeah, No, it's separate. Allen and
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: Company would just be like Chase or any Barclays or whatever.
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: They are a bank, essentially, a banking institution, a boutique
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: one out of New York. Well, they're running the Seahawks
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: sale well. Also, Allen and Company each summer has a
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: summer camp for billionaires in Sun Valley, Idaho. Zuckerman's there,
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: sucker Berg's there, Danny the CEO of Amazon is there.
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: Bezos is there. I don't know if you could take
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: a yacht to Sun Valley. That might be a little difficult.
- 1:20:13Speaker 4: It fit through the you know up here in balance
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: through the lock.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: I don't know if it will fit through the creeks
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: that run through the Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple's there.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: Roger Goodell is there. In fact, all the commissioners of
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: the major sports. Adam Silver is there, Gary Bettman, the
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: NHL NBA commission Adam Silver. But Roger Goodell is there.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: You know who else is there? Burt Cold. Burt Cold
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: is the second in charge of the Seahawks. He's the
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: vice chair of the Paul G. Allen Trust. He is
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: often the one who deals with league issues for Jodie Allen,
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: and some believe we'll have a large, large say in
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: the sale of the Seahawks. So the Commissioner's there, Burt
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: Cold is there, and a bunch of billionaires are there,
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: some of them have been rumored to potentially be interested
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: in buying the Seahawks. Now, the ones that are three,
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: the three parties including Wayne Grossbeck and mattal of Indian
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: Steel tycoon family, and the Celtics investors are not there.
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: The San Francisco forty nine ers minority investor is not there.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: That's already been known to be interested in the Seahawks.
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: So the ones that we know about are not at
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: this but the ones that no one has reported it
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: yet to be interested in, the billionaires galore are there anyway.
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: The company that I'm just putting it out there, I
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: saw Bob condona see how Times wrote about this yesterday
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: about the Forbes story about this too. But it's interesting
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: that Burke Cold was invited. It is Round and Company
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: taking care of a client that they that has hired
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: them to run the sale of the Seahawks. Up next,
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: Nico Moreno is gonna talk about the World Cup. You
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: guys wanted them gals wanted them back on the text
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: line because that's been such a great guest for US.
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: Ask and you shall receive next on ninety three point
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: three KJRFM. Creig bel Jessin McIntyre staying with you. You
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: normally you get Ian Furness right now, but we're gonna
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: take you. Greg and Jess been taking you right up
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: to the kickoff of the World Cup quarterfinal France and
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: Morocco at twelve thirty pre game one o'clock kickoff right
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: here on ninety three point three KJRFM. This part of
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: that is Nico Moreno. Nico Moreno's a World Cup annos
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: for Fox thirteen Seattle for mlsespianol sounder at heart. He's
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: been with me in the stadium for all of the
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: Seattle matches. He was with me at Jimmy's on first
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: before the US Belgium match on Monday, and then at
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: halftime of the match he texted me. He was across
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: the press box from and he texted me and he said,
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: this is the most intense collective play I've seen from
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: Belgium the whole tournament. He and I had watched Belgium.
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: That was the third time because they had two earlier
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: matches in Seattle and their training station was here, and
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: Nico said that he thought it was the bulletin board
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: material from the Balligan controversy and that inspired Belgium. Do
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: you think that might have been the decisive difference in
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: the game? Hello, Nico, Hey, what's going on? Greg?
- 1:23:13Speaker 10: Happy to be on. I just think it's a contributing factor,
- 1:23:17Speaker 10: and I think it was a big one. Anyone that
- 1:23:20Speaker 10: looks upon the situation and watches that game and completely
- 1:23:26Speaker 10: dismisses the fact that this team was so motivated to
- 1:23:31Speaker 10: the point that they had a synchronized dance ready to
- 1:23:34Speaker 10: go at a moment's notice just tells you that they
- 1:23:37Speaker 10: were thinking about it. Of course, that was part of
- 1:23:39Speaker 10: everything that happened. Of Course, the coute Rudyi Gercia was
- 1:23:42Speaker 10: going to use it to his advantage were the other factors. Absolutely.
- 1:23:45Speaker 10: I think Rudi Garcia picks up the line up that
- 1:23:48Speaker 10: he wanted. I thought that he had the right idea
- 1:23:50Speaker 10: in terms of what he wanted to see from his team.
- 1:23:53Speaker 10: But he was absolutely a motivating factor. As a matter
- 1:23:56Speaker 10: of fact, to me, it was a perfect storm that created,
- 1:24:00Speaker 10: on one side a motive in factor for Belgium that
- 1:24:03Speaker 10: united a team that at one point was at each
- 1:24:06Speaker 10: other's throat against set a goal, and on the other end,
- 1:24:11Speaker 10: I can't decipher. I can't find the answer of why
- 1:24:15Speaker 10: this USB national team was so flat, so uninspiring to
- 1:24:19Speaker 10: start a game. So I have to try to guess
- 1:24:24Speaker 10: that maybe the distractions from all this were part of it.
- 1:24:27Speaker 10: Maybe there was a different game plan tactic that then
- 1:24:31Speaker 10: went wait from when they figured out that Florin Baligan
- 1:24:35Speaker 10: was going to be available. I don't want to make
- 1:24:36Speaker 10: too much of it, but there's no doubt in my
- 1:24:38Speaker 10: mind that it was a contributing factor.
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: Nico, How damning is it that the United States was
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: absolutely dominated in the first half and into the second.
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: It was eleven shots for Belgium in the first half,
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: which is more than the four opponents the US had
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: up to that point combined in the first half of
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: four matches up to that point, and it was then
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: three to one in the second half without de Bruyn
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: or even getting off of the bench taking off his sweatsuit,
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: with Lukaku only coming on midway through the second half,
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: Doku coming on midway through second that's three and the
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: best way that's the best goalscorer Belgium's ever had in Lukaku,
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: the best player they've ever had, and then me, the
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: best passer in the tournament. I think you told me
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: and the coach thought. The head coach for Belgium thought,
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: I don't even need to start these three cats and
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: I'll still dominate the US and it worked.
- 1:25:22Speaker 10: I really do think that that was a great move
- 1:25:25Speaker 10: from Rudy Garcia, specifically because I thought that Lui Bacchio
- 1:25:30Speaker 10: really did a phenomenal job on his end to just
- 1:25:35Speaker 10: open up space for Cyprus to come in at the
- 1:25:39Speaker 10: fullback and create a real open lane and allow him
- 1:25:43Speaker 10: to continuously add into the attack. Created some real difficult
- 1:25:47Speaker 10: overloads for the US men's national team, and the press
- 1:25:52Speaker 10: thing was so much better. The pressing was a key component.
- 1:25:56Speaker 10: They saw a nick in the armor of is US's
- 1:26:01Speaker 10: national team and they went for it. The team was
- 1:26:04Speaker 10: so much more intense, and that that part of it
- 1:26:08Speaker 10: is some of the substitutions that Ririgarcia decided to make,
- 1:26:12Speaker 10: and then he had those guys to come in as
- 1:26:16Speaker 10: spark plugs later in the game, which was just a
- 1:26:20Speaker 10: good strategy. But overall it was you got to credit
- 1:26:25Speaker 10: the opposition, but you have to look at this in
- 1:26:28Speaker 10: international team and say, look, this was a shell of
- 1:26:34Speaker 10: the team that we've seen throughout this tournament, and they
- 1:26:37Speaker 10: just didn't want it. It's just not about the soccer.
- 1:26:40Speaker 10: When you get outplayed outformed, out, hustled outdouled out of
- 1:26:45Speaker 10: your own idiom, it's beyond soccer. There was something else.
- 1:26:48Speaker 10: There was a mental block, whether it was nervousism or
- 1:26:51Speaker 10: the fact that this team was actually gonna come at you.
- 1:26:55Speaker 10: Look here in this same show, I said, the United
- 1:26:58Speaker 10: States has to come out of from the eight and
- 1:27:00Speaker 10: take the game away from got a game possession, and
- 1:27:04Speaker 10: they didn't do that. And a lot of that also
- 1:27:07Speaker 10: has to do with your top players not being ready
- 1:27:10Speaker 10: for top moments, and that's just what happens. Policy was bad,
- 1:27:15Speaker 10: mckncie was bad. Team Brian was awful. I mean, it
- 1:27:19Speaker 10: was just such a mountain of mistakes that there was
- 1:27:24Speaker 10: something else beyond just soccer.
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: Do you think that the United States men's program is
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: as far away from the world's elite as it looked
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: Monday night?
- 1:27:35Speaker 10: No, I do not, And that's part of you know,
- 1:27:39Speaker 10: pondering upon the tournament is just having a cooler head.
- 1:27:45Speaker 10: I was very critical and fairly critical of the team
- 1:27:48Speaker 10: right after the game in my postgame UH talk with
- 1:27:52Speaker 10: Q thirteen. But now that I've had a couple of
- 1:27:57Speaker 10: days to kind of think about it, there were objectives
- 1:28:01Speaker 10: that were reached. This did make a country fall in
- 1:28:04Speaker 10: love with him. They did make a country believe this
- 1:28:07Speaker 10: is the most goald Di scored in the World Cup.
- 1:28:09Speaker 10: This is as exciting and entertaining as they've been in
- 1:28:11Speaker 10: a very long time.
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: They did win their group.
- 1:28:14Speaker 10: So there were objectives that were reached, and that's why
- 1:28:18Speaker 10: I don't think that what happened on this particular game
- 1:28:22Speaker 10: should erase everything that they were able to do. It
- 1:28:27Speaker 10: feels like the team digressed, absolutely, it feels like it
- 1:28:30Speaker 10: took three steps back. The reality is that you have
- 1:28:34Speaker 10: created at least a group of players that can continue
- 1:28:38Speaker 10: to follow the exact same system. Now, whether Patchettino stays
- 1:28:41Speaker 10: or goes, I think that's all part of this. I
- 1:28:45Speaker 10: would like to see him say, because I feel like
- 1:28:47Speaker 10: you got to build on this and not try to
- 1:28:50Speaker 10: change it up. And you know it's going to be
- 1:28:52Speaker 10: difficult because he's going to have a lot of offers,
- 1:28:54Speaker 10: of course, but if you can keep them. I think
- 1:28:56Speaker 10: you continue to build on what you have and what
- 1:28:59Speaker 10: you did in twenty That's.
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: A great point because Pochettino came in midstream of this
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: World Cup cycle leading into this tournament, and he would
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: get four years to develop and build on what he's
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: already done. When he was asked after the match in
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: the postgame press conference, for those of you not knowing,
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: he was about out, ask are you coming back? And
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: he said, well, this isn't the moment to talk about that,
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: but I'm sure in a few weeks we'll have the
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: opportunity and we can talk. And if the federation wants
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: me to talk, he said, so he's first the end
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: of the federation is even interested in bringing them back.
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: I would think they would be, and you're right, that
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: would be a long way. It's some continuity at least,
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: and how they play, their mentality and the whole system.
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: Nico Marino joining US Fox thirteen World Cup sports analysts
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: as well from MS Espanol and Sounder at Heart. I
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: want to bring up something we've talked about all week
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: on the show here, the system at large, the feeder
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: system for the program in the United States. You know,
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: soccer at its grassroots level. You love it here, you
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: know everyone in the soccer community here. My opinion's broken.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: I want to know if you share that opinion. The
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: pay for play system in this country, how do we
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: fix it? How do we make it more like the
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: Europeans and the South Americans and so exlalitarian and the
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: fact that anyone and everyone can put play from any
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: background in other countries but not so here.
- 1:30:18Speaker 10: Look, as I've mentioned on your show before, I think
- 1:30:21Speaker 10: that the pay for play is here to stay. I
- 1:30:23Speaker 10: do think that there has to be a bigger commitment
- 1:30:26Speaker 10: from US Soccer to establish some additional academies. I have
- 1:30:32Speaker 10: heard some of my peers talk about an open pyramid
- 1:30:36Speaker 10: system where there is some pro rail, some relegation and
- 1:30:41Speaker 10: promotion in different divisions that would incentivize smaller investments for
- 1:30:48Speaker 10: CD clubs and city academies, and you can create like
- 1:30:52Speaker 10: you see in Liverpool where you have you know, like
- 1:30:56Speaker 10: thirty thirty three forty academies around the cities, because that's
- 1:31:01Speaker 10: just how much of the different divisions that you can
- 1:31:04Speaker 10: put into.
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: So that's all part of it.
- 1:31:07Speaker 10: But I really continue to think that because soccer is
- 1:31:13Speaker 10: so young, for lack of a better word, in the
- 1:31:18Speaker 10: global aspect, right, MLS is one of the youngest leagues
- 1:31:23Speaker 10: in the planet. I think that they have made some
- 1:31:26Speaker 10: pretty big strides and they got to continue to keep
- 1:31:29Speaker 10: that momentum. But they have to start to understand and
- 1:31:35Speaker 10: figure out additional ways to get more soccer around the
- 1:31:40Speaker 10: global scale of the United States in general. And I
- 1:31:44Speaker 10: think that's going to be the next for US Soccer
- 1:31:47Speaker 10: to really work closely with MLS and the academies and
- 1:31:52Speaker 10: next Pro and all of these other components and tentacles
- 1:31:56Speaker 10: and layers that goes into soccer in order to really
- 1:32:00Speaker 10: having a bigger seedar system around the United States.
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: I mean, Nico Marino joining us here on the Beacon
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: Plumbing hotline right before are broadcast here on ninety three
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: point three KJRFM of France and Morocco in the first
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: World Cup quarterfinal kickoffs at one twelve thirty pre game
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: show right here on ninety three point three. What do
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: you think happens today? Nico, the French have been until
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: the last match unchallenged, and then they had a little
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: bit of trouble getting out of the round of sixteen,
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: or though they won, can anyone beat them.
- 1:32:35Speaker 10: I can't fathom. And I mean France has been the
- 1:32:38Speaker 10: one team that has played, as advertised the licks in
- 1:32:41Speaker 10: a tier of their own, better than anybody Spain or
- 1:32:45Speaker 10: Brazil or Norway. I mean, nobody has gotten closed throughout
- 1:32:50Speaker 10: this tournament. That has been Askinson and but pay has
- 1:32:53Speaker 10: seven goals in his last five matches. France or what
- 1:32:56Speaker 10: three or more goals in four of their five World
- 1:33:00Speaker 10: Cup matches. I mean they have been on real They're
- 1:33:03Speaker 10: so balanced and middled with Cody and Rabia, they are
- 1:33:07Speaker 10: big size and when it comes to markup in defensive efforts,
- 1:33:13Speaker 10: they're so good with Slavia and Abakan in the back end.
- 1:33:16Speaker 10: So they're just almost the full perfect team. And their
- 1:33:21Speaker 10: debties are still coming off the bench. And they are
- 1:33:25Speaker 10: a group that has been together for a long time.
- 1:33:27Speaker 10: They have had a process with their coach that's twenty twelve,
- 1:33:30Speaker 10: I'm not mistaken. So they have absolutely everything to.
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: Win this now.
- 1:33:35Speaker 10: I think Morocco can do some things. I really do
- 1:33:38Speaker 10: think that they're going to be able to at least
- 1:33:40Speaker 10: for the first forty five minutes. This should be entertaining game.
- 1:33:43Speaker 10: I love what Brahen Diaz and Hakimi do with overloads
- 1:33:46Speaker 10: on the right side. I like what I see from Bono,
- 1:33:49Speaker 10: just a really difficult goalkeeper to try to beat. Diop
- 1:33:53Speaker 10: has been phenomenon in defense, so I think that they
- 1:33:57Speaker 10: are going to make it interesting. But once France gets
- 1:34:01Speaker 10: going later in the second half, there's gonna be relentless
- 1:34:04Speaker 10: and I think they're gonna end up having a pretty
- 1:34:07Speaker 10: comfortable win over Morocco.
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: France Morocco one o'clock clive here on ninety three point
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: three KJRFM in the World Cup quarterfinals from Foxboro, Massachusetts
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: tomorrow at noon here on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: Spain and Belgium will play in Inglewood in the quarterfinal
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: of the bracket. That's the opposite France, Monico, What is
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: there anything that's gonna prevent I know we saw Belgium
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: at its best the other night, but is there anything
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: that's gonna prevent a Spain France semifinal in your mind?
- 1:34:34Speaker 3: Nico, Uh?
- 1:34:40Speaker 10: Maybe? I really do think that ed Rudy Garcia has
- 1:34:43Speaker 10: kind of found the rhythm with this players, and Lucaku
- 1:34:47Speaker 10: has been the perfect super subba they call it in soccer,
- 1:34:51Speaker 10: coming up the bench and scoring. I think that the
- 1:34:54Speaker 10: fact that Chersika Talare, a guy that you've been waiting
- 1:34:58Speaker 10: to break through, had a braz against the United States.
- 1:35:02Speaker 10: Adds a different component of finishing, which is something that
- 1:35:07Speaker 10: Belgium has lacked in Spain. On the other end, as
- 1:35:10Speaker 10: good as they have been in this rock up defensively
- 1:35:13Speaker 10: because they have six consecutive clean sheets, meaning that they
- 1:35:16Speaker 10: haven't conceded any goals, they have lacked some scoring and
- 1:35:21Speaker 10: you got the ball in the back of the Look,
- 1:35:23Speaker 10: believe me, I'm still hurting because Columbia could not put
- 1:35:26Speaker 10: the ball. And Spain is similar in that regard, where
- 1:35:34Speaker 10: there is all of this firepower and Almo and Lamil
- 1:35:38Speaker 10: Jamal is such a good layer and he creates, but
- 1:35:41Speaker 10: there hasn't been an ability to just finish and score,
- 1:35:45Speaker 10: with the exception of maybe the Saudi Arabia game and
- 1:35:48Speaker 10: the Austria game that I was laid in the game
- 1:35:49Speaker 10: as well. So that could be a component where if
- 1:35:54Speaker 10: Belgium continues to run hard, if they have been unified,
- 1:35:58Speaker 10: cemented by everything that's happened, and now they get on
- 1:36:01Speaker 10: a run, yeah, I mean, they definitely have a puncher's
- 1:36:04Speaker 10: chance against Spain.
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: All right. In the minute we have left Niko. The
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: other side of the bracket Norway England Saturday in Miami, Argentina,
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: Switzerland and Kansas City. What happens those two and who
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: goes through?
- 1:36:16Speaker 10: I love that game. I mean that that is probably
- 1:36:19Speaker 10: the more exciting game because you're going to have this
- 1:36:22Speaker 10: additional physicality, this speed to the game, this contrast of
- 1:36:28Speaker 10: stylistic play. Both are indirect, but you have the star
- 1:36:33Speaker 10: power in Holland, who you know is up there for
- 1:36:36Speaker 10: the Golden boot of the tournament. He has been on
- 1:36:40Speaker 10: real just looks like a character out of like the
- 1:36:43Speaker 10: House of Dragons. I mean just walking around like a
- 1:36:45Speaker 10: sword in his hand. I mean he's been phenomenal. Harry
- 1:36:48Speaker 10: Kane's tearing have found his way. I think Gordon for
- 1:36:51Speaker 10: England has been phenomenal, so it's going to be a
- 1:36:54Speaker 10: very good game. I do see England, though, beating this
- 1:36:58Speaker 10: team in Norway because I think that they have been
- 1:37:01Speaker 10: challenged farther. They have had to really dig deep and
- 1:37:05Speaker 10: at times absorbed pressure. You saw it against Mexico with
- 1:37:09Speaker 10: everything against them, and they were able to really put
- 1:37:11Speaker 10: it together. I think decln Rice has been really good,
- 1:37:14Speaker 10: but mainly a Bellingham he is the guy that should
- 1:37:17Speaker 10: all work. He's the one that puts it all together.
- 1:37:19Speaker 10: Now there is a key component here which is going
- 1:37:22Speaker 10: to be interesting because actually there are four players for
- 1:37:25Speaker 10: England that have that are one yellow away from not
- 1:37:27Speaker 10: being able to participate in the semi final. Rice Bellingham,
- 1:37:31Speaker 10: Joey or really all those guys are going to be,
- 1:37:34Speaker 10: you know, in some difficulties if they get a yellow.
- 1:37:38Speaker 10: All of that's going to come together. But I think
- 1:37:39Speaker 10: we have a real fun game and I think that
- 1:37:44Speaker 10: England wined three goals to one.
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: Nico Moreno, appreciate you man, enjoy the World Cup as always.
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: Thanks a lot. Thank you, Nico Moreno. Leading up to
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: the World Cup, well now we got France and Morocco live,
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: the pregame show, the National Iret pregame show from Anderson
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: Hurst and Danny Jackson is next, and then one o'clock
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: kickoff from Foxboro, Massachusetts, Greg Bell, Jessin McIntyre. Thanks, we'll
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: do it again tomorrow. Leading into another World Cup quarterfinal.
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: We've got a lot of soccer coming up all weekend
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: on ninety three point three KJRFM
