- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. My name is Tracie
- 0:03Foster and I am here in this episode that really
- 0:06got started because me and Gia were having discussion
- 0:10about weeds and flowers and I was like that really
- 0:14is I'm like because I was didn't know if this
- 0:17flower was a weed but it looked like it was so
- 0:20pretty I didn't want to pull it and I was just
- 0:22like you know some weeds are like really pretty
- 0:25I feel bad for calling them a weed I said I wonder
- 0:27if they get offended if you call them a flower,
- 0:32but they're really a weed and like vice versa.
- 0:35And so I was like, that really does go back into
- 0:38scripture. And G was like, yes, because everything
- 0:41that you talk about, you can tie back into scripture.
- 0:45And so my name is Tracy Foster. Welcome back
- 0:48to Fostering Faith. If you're just now joining
- 0:50us, I'm so glad that you're here. While you're
- 0:52listening in your car or while you're folding
- 0:54laundry, walking your dog or just sitting down
- 0:56for a cup of coffee in your Bible, this moment
- 0:59is here for you. And it matters because we're
- 1:02going to dive deep in today. And I mean real
- 1:05deep. And so in today's episode, growing through
- 1:08the weeds, we're going to be anchoring our hearts
- 1:10into Matthew 13 in the parable where Jesus is
- 1:13told about the wheat and the weeds. But listen,
- 1:16it's not just about the plants, not. about just
- 1:20dusty old farmer story. This is a parable. It's
- 1:23about you. It's about me. It's about real tension
- 1:27that we're living in the world today, full of
- 1:30distractions, toxic influences, spiritual counterfeits,
- 1:34and questions like, why is this still here in
- 1:39my life, God? Why haven't you removed it yet?
- 1:42So let's start where Jesus started. Let's read
- 1:45In Matthew 13, 24 through 30, it says, Jesus
- 1:49told another parable, the kingdom of heaven is
- 1:52like a man who sowed good seed in the field.
- 1:54But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came
- 1:57out and sowed the weeds among the wheat and went
- 1:59away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads,
- 2:02the weeds also appeared. The owner servants came
- 2:05to him and said, sir, didn't you sow good seeds
- 2:08in your field? Where did these weeds come from?
- 2:27Now pause with me for a second because we always
- 2:29want to know kind of what the picture looks like.
- 2:32And so don't breeze just by that. And so Jesus
- 2:35is telling us about his kingdom. Yes, the one
- 2:38that we're already living in, but also waiting
- 2:41for. There will be things planted in the same
- 2:45space that look good, but aren't good. There
- 2:48will be wheat, true, life -giving, fruitful believers,
- 2:54and there will be weeds. And those weeds, they
- 3:00don't look evil. They don't come with warning
- 3:03signs. They come camouflaged. They come quietly.
- 3:07They look and grow right beside the real thing.
- 3:11And so let's dig a little bit deeper. And so
- 3:14the wheat back in the day was a plant called
- 3:17Darnell. Darnell was a type of rye grass that
- 3:20almost is undistinguishable from wheat until
- 3:24the very end of the growing season. And when
- 3:27the wheat starts to produce heavy golden grain,
- 3:32the Darnell produces nothing. It's empty. In
- 3:36ancient Israel, this isn't just symbolic. It
- 3:40was a real -life farming problem. Enemies would
- 3:42actually sew Darnell into someone's wheat field
- 3:44to sabotage their harvest. Darnell is toxic.
- 3:48It can make you sick. It pretends to be something
- 3:52it's not. So what is Jesus showing us? He's saying
- 3:58that in the kingdom, nothing that looks like
- 4:01it belongs does. Not every influencer preaching
- 4:05the Bible open is actually preaching the truth.
- 4:08Not every emotion that feels good is from God.
- 4:11Not every opportunity is God ordained. Not every
- 4:16friend is building your faith. And not every
- 4:19thought that crosses your mind is worth entertaining.
- 4:23But, and this is where it gets real. Jesus doesn't
- 4:27tell the servants to go pull up the weeds. In
- 4:30fact, he stops him and he says, no, because while
- 4:34you're pulling up the weeds, you may uproot the
- 4:36wheat with them. Now listen, this part hit me
- 4:41so hard because there are things in my life and
- 4:45I know that are not from God, things I've prayed
- 4:48would be removed, circumstances I begged him
- 4:51to fix, people I've prayed to forget, and yet
- 4:54they're still here. But Jesus says, let both
- 5:00grow together until harvest. That sounds a lot
- 5:05like let it be. Wait. Trust me. You're not the
- 5:12gardener. I am. And that is so hard to chew on
- 5:18if you're in the middle of a season and you don't
- 5:20know what is on that paper. You don't know what
- 5:24the diagnosis is. You don't know what is going
- 5:27on in your marriage. You don't know what the
- 5:30circumstances at work are and you're just praying
- 5:32like, God, change this, change this, change this.
- 5:35Because we want instant deliverance. We want
- 5:38the Amazon Prime. We want the delivery at our
- 5:41door the next day. We want to pray and it be
- 5:43right there. We want to rip things out at the
- 5:46root. We want to clean, uncluttered fields. We
- 5:49want perfect, peaceful lives. But Jesus says,
- 5:52if you move too fast, you will play judge and
- 5:56gardener and you might damage the wheat while
- 5:58trying to eliminate the weeds. So what does that
- 6:03mean for us? It means that God, in His sovereignty,
- 6:09sometimes allows difficult people, messy relationships,
- 6:15hard circumstances, temptations, doubts, pain,
- 6:18and spiritual confusion to remain, not because
- 6:21He approves of them, but because He's doing something
- 6:26deeper in us that requires growth alongside them.
- 6:32Sometimes you can only learn what's really inside
- 6:35of you when you're up against something that
- 6:38challenges you. Sometimes it's weeds growing
- 6:41next to you that forces you to dig your roots
- 6:44deeper. Sometimes it's the presence of fake that
- 6:47makes the real more obvious. Let me give you
- 6:51a real example. Wheat, when it matures, becomes
- 6:55heavy with grain. It bends. It bows low. But
- 7:00weeds? They say tall and stiff. They say I'm
- 7:05proud There's humility in true spiritual maturity.
- 7:09There's surrender There's weight But false faith
- 7:14stands tall proud and unbending So here's a question
- 7:19for you when pressure hits Do you bow? Do you
- 7:24bend and worship and surrender and trust and
- 7:28say I know that you have this I know I have nothing
- 7:30I am weak and I know that you are my strength
- 7:33I have nothing if I have if I don't have you
- 7:37Are you stiffened in pride in? resistance and
- 7:43in control because weeds don't know how to bow
- 7:48and Let's go a step further When Jesus explains
- 7:52the parable to his disciples in verses 36 through
- 7:5443, he says that this is about the end of the
- 7:58age. The harvest is coming. The weeds will be
- 8:00pulled out and burned. The wheat will shine like
- 8:03the sun in the kingdom of their father. And so,
- 8:06yes, the parable is about judgment. It's about
- 8:09God's perfect justice. It's about discernment,
- 8:13trust, spiritual growth right here and right
- 8:18now. And so you're great. This is great. We're
- 8:21farming in this episode Tracy, but how do I apply
- 8:25this to my life? So let's go through that. So
- 8:28how can we apply this? One, stop trying to pull
- 8:31up your own weeds. Not every battle is yours
- 8:35to fight. Not every issue is meant to be fixed
- 8:38immediately. And there are things that only the
- 8:41harvest can handle. Only, and so we trust the
- 8:46process. And while God is maturing us and waiting
- 8:49on us and growing us and molding us, we're here
- 8:54to trust him. And what else are we going to do
- 8:58while we wait? Number two, discern what's growing
- 9:03in your field. Ask God for clarity. What in your
- 9:07life is wheat? Bringing nourishment, blessing,
- 9:12and life. What's a weed that's draining you?
- 9:15that's distracting you, that's deceiving you.
- 9:18And listen, some weeds are pretty. Some weeds
- 9:22smell real sweet. But if it's not feeding your
- 9:27faith, it's not from the farmer. Keep growing.
- 9:32Don't let the weeds around you stunt your growth.
- 9:35Don't wait for the field to be perfect. You are
- 9:37called to mature right where you are. If you're
- 9:40in a job that feels toxic, keep growing. If you're
- 9:44in a family dynamic that's hard, keep growing.
- 9:47If you're in a spiritually dry season, keep growing.
- 9:50Because your faith isn't dependent upon your
- 9:52surroundings, it's dependent on your source.
- 9:57Fourth, stay humble. Let the fruit of your life
- 10:01speak for itself. Bow low, be teachable. Don't
- 10:06get caught up in the exposure and exposing the
- 10:09weeds around you and stop producing fruit yourself.
- 10:13Don't get so caught up in exposing all the weeds
- 10:16and putting fingers and doing all the things
- 10:18that are around you that you stop producing your
- 10:25joy, your fruit, your love, your peace, your
- 10:27happiness, your fruits of your spirit. Five.
- 10:33The final word is not yours. It's not your job
- 10:36to judge who's wheat, who's weeds. God knows,
- 10:41God sees. God will sort it out in the end. Friend,
- 10:47I know you're in a season surrounded by weeds,
- 10:49but don't give up. Don't curse the field. Don't
- 10:52compare your growth. Just keep reaching for the
- 10:55light. Keep soaking in the word. Keep producing
- 10:58fruit. The harvest is coming. And so thank you
- 11:02so much for joining me today on Fostering Faith.
- 11:04I hope this method has challenged you, encouraged
- 11:06you, made you look at your field a little bit
- 11:09more different. I'd love for you to share this
- 11:11with somebody and remember that you are made
- 11:13to grow in messy places. I would love to pray
- 11:16for us. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much
- 11:18for today. Thank you so much for yesterday. Thank
- 11:21you that you see our fruit. Thank you that you
- 11:23know our heart. Thank you that you never stop
- 11:25cultivating us for your purpose. Thank you that
- 11:29you have allowed us to grow amongst the weeds.
- 11:31Thank you that you are the harvester. Thank you
- 11:33that we bow at your feet and that we lay our
- 11:36worries and our burdens at your feet because
- 11:38we know that you are a good father. We know that
- 11:40you are taking care of us. Thank you for all
- 11:42that you do. And Jesus, I pray. Amen. And so
- 11:47until next time, keep growing, stay rooted, and
- 11:50trust in the one who never misses a single seed.
- 11:54Have a great week, guys. We love you.
