- 0:00Welcome to the Voices of Life, a ministry of
- 0:02the Church for Life. I'm Pastor David. Today
- 0:05we celebrate a woman whose life has become one
- 0:09of America's great testimonies. A woman who rose
- 0:12from the hills of the Appalachia to stages, screens,
- 0:16and hearts around the world. This is a Voices
- 0:21of Life special honoring the faith, generosity,
- 0:24and lifelong sacrifices of Dolly Parton. So today
- 0:27we're shining a light on a life stitched together
- 0:31with faith, family, and extraordinary generosity.
- 0:34A life that began in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee
- 0:37with a little girl named Dolly Rebecca Parton,
- 0:40born January 19, 1946, in Locust Ridge, Tennessee.
- 0:45She was the fourth of 12 children raised in poverty
- 0:48so deep that even basic clothing was a luxury.
- 0:52As her biography records say, Her family lived
- 0:56in severe economic hardship and her Appalachian
- 0:59upbringing became one of the most important sources
- 1:02of her songwriting and public identity. But God
- 1:06often plants greatness in humble soil. She had
- 1:10a deep closeness to God. Dolly grew up in a home
- 1:13filled with gospel music, prayer, and the steady
- 1:16faith of her mother. The Country Music Hall of
- 1:19Fame notes that her mother taught her church
- 1:22songs shaping the spiritual foundation. that
- 1:24would follow her throughout her life her faith
- 1:27has never been a performance it has been a compass
- 1:30a quiet steady presence guiding her through fame
- 1:35heartbreak business and service dolly has often
- 1:40said she prays every day and that faith is the
- 1:44reason she keeps going keeps giving and keeps
- 1:47believing the best about people let's talk about
- 1:52her sacrifices Behind the rhinestones, the laughter
- 1:55is a woman who has carried heavy burdens. She
- 1:59sacrificed privacy for fame. She sacrificed rest
- 2:04for work. She sacrificed personal comfort to
- 2:07care for her husband, Carl Dean, during his long
- 2:10illness, an act of devotion she later admitted
- 2:13caused her to neglect her own health. As reported,
- 2:18she acknowledged that Caring for him contributed
- 2:22to her neglecting some of her own health needs.
- 2:25And that's one of the biggest sacrifices a person
- 2:28can give to give to someone else over themselves.
- 2:32And when she turned 80 years old, she was recovering
- 2:35from dizziness, dehydration. She continued to
- 2:38work. She continued to write. Creating, building,
- 2:41giving. Her recent health challenges have slowed
- 2:45her appearances, but not her spirit. She remained
- 2:48active in the music Broadway. Dollywood, and
- 2:51philanthropy. This unfortunately all came to
- 2:54an end today on August 25th, 2026, when Dolly
- 2:58passed away. But let's look at her generosity.
- 3:00If you ask what defines Dolly Parton the most,
- 3:04it wasn't her fame. It was not the awards. It
- 3:09wasn't even the songs, though they among are
- 3:13America's greatest songs. It was always in her
- 3:16generosity. Her father's inability to read became
- 3:20the spark for one of the most powerful charitable
- 3:23programs in modern history. Her father's literacy
- 3:25eventually became a particularly important motivation
- 3:28for one of Dolly's greatest philanthropic accomplishments,
- 3:31and that was the Imagination Library. Today,
- 3:34that program sends over 3 million books every
- 3:37month to children around the world, not just
- 3:39in Tennessee, but in the United States, Canada,
- 3:43UK, Australia, and Ireland. That is not charity.
- 3:49That is legacy. Her Dollywood Foundation continues
- 3:53to lift children, families, and communities.
- 3:56Her My People funded helped rebuild lives after
- 4:00devastating 2016 Smoky Mountain wildfires. Her
- 4:03businesses have transformed East Tennessee's
- 4:06economy, bringing millions of visitors and thousands
- 4:09of jobs. Dolly didn't just escape poverty. She
- 4:14built ladders for others to climb out of it.
- 4:17And this was a calling. Dolly's life was a tapestry
- 4:22woven from hardship, hope, humor, and holiness.
- 4:26She has crossed industries and generations, yet
- 4:31never lost the heart of her little mountain girl
- 4:35who believed God had a purpose for her. Her story
- 4:39reminds us that faith can flourish in poverty,
- 4:41that generosity can outlive fame, that sacrifice
- 4:45can become service. And that God can take a life
- 4:49from the holler and turn it into a blessing for
- 4:53the world. Today we honor the life of Dolly Parton.
- 4:58Not just the entertainer, but the giver, the
- 5:01believer, the servant, the daughter of the Appalachia,
- 5:06and a woman whose life shined with the light
- 5:10of God's goodness. Let us pray. Father, we thank
- 5:15you today. for the remarkable life of Dolly Parton,
- 5:18for the joy she has given, the hope she has shared,
- 5:22and the generosity she has poured into the world.
- 5:26Lord, you lifted her from the hills of the Appalachia
- 5:29and shaped her into a light that touched millions.
- 5:33We honor the faith that carried her, the sacrifices
- 5:37she made, and the love that she showed in every
- 5:42good work that she did. Now we ask your blessing
- 5:47upon her family. Surround them with your peace,
- 5:51your comfort, and your strength. Let your presence
- 5:54rest on every heart connected to her life and
- 5:57legacy. Keep them in your grace, hold them in
- 6:01your protection, and guide them in every step
- 6:03ahead. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for joining
- 6:08me for this Voices of Life special. May Dolly's
- 6:12story remind us that no matter where we begin,
- 6:16God can use every hardship, every gift, and every
- 6:19moment to shape a life of purpose. Until next
- 6:23time, may the Lord bless you, may He keep you,
- 6:26and may He guide you into every good work prepared
- 6:29for you. This is Pastor David, and you've been
- 6:32listening to Voices of Life.
