- 0:44Speaker 3: Oh? Good? All right?
- 0:45Speaker 4: Every week we dig into the wildest, weirdest, and most
- 0:48Speaker 4: jaw dropping hiring fails from offices, job sites, organizations from
- 0:53Speaker 4: across the country. We've had some good stories so far.
- 0:56Speaker 4: I still think the cuddling cat is stole. The nustling
- 0:58Speaker 4: cat is still my favorite story.
- 1:01Speaker 8: You don't say that, I feel like a hundred And
- 1:02Speaker 8: what about the guy that melted his face to the Yeah,
- 1:04Speaker 8: that was pretty bad.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:06Speaker 4: As a reminder, we're running a ten thousand dollars contest.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Just send us your best bad hire story and we'll
- 1:14Speaker 4: read it here on the podcast. Funniest, craziest, wildest story
- 1:17Speaker 4: you can think of. Could be happy, could be sad,
- 1:20Speaker 4: could be tragic, whatever it might be. Just tell a
- 1:23Speaker 4: great story. We're talking about resumes full of lies, maybe
- 1:28Speaker 4: somehow you know, a failed background check, something that just completely.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Whipped on the hire.
- 1:33Speaker 4: That would be Those would be great stories and to
- 1:35Speaker 4: give everyone a chance to win ten thousand bucks. So
- 1:37Speaker 4: I'm looking forward to more. I know we got some
- 1:40Speaker 4: submissions this week, yep, So we'll read some of those.
- 1:42Speaker 4: That'll be cool, and we yes, you can change the
- 1:47Speaker 4: name of the person so you can keep it anonymous.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Let's not throw anybody under the under the bus for real.
- 1:54Speaker 3: So but I'm.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Excited about the ten thousand bucks. I'm excited about giving
- 1:57Speaker 4: that away. And we'll start getting some word out on
- 2:02Speaker 4: social media and from other places people to summon some
- 2:06Speaker 4: stories and for a chance to win ten thousands.
- 2:08Speaker 3: So that's really cool for sure. So have you guys
- 2:11Speaker 3: got good stories today?
- 2:12Speaker 5: I do?
- 2:12Speaker 3: All right, we'll try to do two or three of
- 2:14Speaker 3: peace because you told me you had some long ones too.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Yeah, we have some very windy ones today, and you.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Had some type of comment from our social media.
- 2:20Speaker 3: So when maybe you thought was funny. You think I
- 2:22Speaker 3: think will be funny, but.
- 2:23Speaker 5: Maybe I do.
- 2:24Speaker 8: Yeah maybe maybe see Yeah.
- 2:28Speaker 3: So why don't I start You want to do that? Yes, so.
- 2:34Speaker 4: We've been this is here. Here's the story and I
- 2:36Speaker 4: read this a minute ago. This thing goes from you know,
- 2:39Speaker 4: a little menacing at work to just absolute crazy town.
- 2:42Speaker 4: So we had been noticing a lot of tools going
- 2:46Speaker 4: missing at work, like thousands of dollars worth of drills, batteries, saws, alls,
- 2:53Speaker 4: you know that kind of stuff. You know, we're a
- 2:54Speaker 4: pretty large manufacturing facility, but our processes hadn't called up
- 2:58Speaker 4: to our size yet, so nothing was really tagged or identified,
- 3:02Speaker 4: which made it really hard to track. I guess easy
- 3:04Speaker 4: to steal when they don't know what they have.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:06Speaker 4: I was working in one of our shops and the
- 3:08Speaker 4: supervisor came in and grabbed one of the apprentices and
- 3:12Speaker 4: asked him to come with it. Now, this kid was
- 3:15Speaker 4: always a pretty decent guy, pretty funny, and not a
- 3:18Speaker 4: bad worker. We all knew he was kind of a
- 3:21Speaker 4: mess though, and had a lot of bad habits. So
- 3:23Speaker 4: when he got asked to go, we started to put
- 3:26Speaker 4: it together that he must have been the one stealing
- 3:28Speaker 4: the stuff, probably to pay for drugs, and that he
- 3:32Speaker 4: was he was gonna get let go. He comes back
- 3:35Speaker 4: a little bit later and confirms that he was fired
- 3:37Speaker 4: and grabs a couple of things, but doesn't touch his tools.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Very odd considering that's how we make our living. But
- 3:44Speaker 4: one of the guys asked if he's gonna take them,
- 3:46Speaker 4: and all he said was nope, I don't need them,
- 3:48Speaker 4: but watch me in the news.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Then he left.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Yeah, so that's it.
- 3:55Speaker 4: We kind of, oh, no, this is going again. The
- 3:58Speaker 4: story keeps going. We kind of looked at each other
- 4:00Speaker 4: in laugh figured he was just mad and you know,
- 4:03Speaker 4: making some crazy, you know statements or claims, and that
- 4:06Speaker 4: he'd come back and grab them when he calmed down
- 4:07Speaker 4: a little bit. Nope, never returned. Turns out he had
- 4:11Speaker 4: some relationship issues going on along with that rampant drug use,
- 4:16Speaker 4: and now that he had even more time to enjoy
- 4:21Speaker 4: that he had no job. So he ended up assaulting
- 4:23Speaker 4: his girlfriend and when she left in her car, he
- 4:26Speaker 4: ran down the street to a convenience store carjacked some
- 4:31Speaker 4: lady's ride. She managed to get out before he took
- 4:36Speaker 4: the car. The four days following were pretty crazy. Apparently
- 4:40Speaker 4: he was randomly committing crimes with no real ideas, with
- 4:44Speaker 4: the idea of what the heck he was doing lots
- 4:46Speaker 4: of kind of random vi and ease, And at one
- 4:48Speaker 4: point he was confronted by a homeowner, to which he threatened,
- 4:53Speaker 4: it was pretty crazy seeing someone's face that you just
- 4:57Speaker 4: worked with a few days earlier plastered all over the news.
- 5:02Speaker 5: So he he was not telling a lot when he
- 5:04Speaker 5: said catch me on the GEDI he was real serious
- 5:07Speaker 5: about it.
- 5:08Speaker 6: He was just doing all this and not no. Is
- 5:11Speaker 6: he on drugs?
- 5:11Speaker 7: Right?
- 5:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess I don't know why I did all this.
- 5:14Speaker 3: I don't know it all came. It all came.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Undercover officer spotted him and yet another stolen vehicle on
- 5:21Speaker 4: the highway. The cot flashed his badge to try to
- 5:24Speaker 4: get him to stop.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Uh.
- 5:26Speaker 4: He did stop by ramming the police car and forcing
- 5:29Speaker 4: them both onto the side of road. The officer was
- 5:33Speaker 4: then attacked by the man who even but he eventually
- 5:36Speaker 4: tasered him uh and got some back up. So mister So,
- 5:40Speaker 4: mister name withheld received a decently long jail term for
- 5:44Speaker 4: his efforts, and I've never heard from him since.
- 5:46Speaker 7: We should give him a name.
- 5:48Speaker 5: Yeah, what's his name, what's his name? Bob, Bob, dang Bob. Yeah,
- 5:54Speaker 5: I don't know a lot.
- 5:55Speaker 4: So it goes from you know, a missing Saul, to
- 5:58Speaker 4: carjacking to you know, ramming a police officer. I guess
- 6:02Speaker 4: a lot of times you have no idea who you're
- 6:03Speaker 4: working with.
- 6:04Speaker 5: Yea, you know, I guess, guess, so you need.
- 6:08Speaker 4: To check himma if if like tools start missing at
- 6:11Speaker 4: the office, hall, definitely checking.
- 6:13Speaker 7: From me on.
- 6:15Speaker 6: Not that I'm before.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know. It just seemed like it just was.
- 6:24Speaker 4: It was read it went I mean, it's completely went
- 6:26Speaker 4: off the rails here, all right. Here's here's another one.
- 6:29Speaker 4: I hired someone who seemed promising. How many of these stories.
- 6:33Speaker 5: They all say that, they all say they see.
- 6:36Speaker 4: How it's just like everyone's like, oh this, this was
- 6:39Speaker 4: going to be a great hire, and then it just so.
- 6:43Speaker 4: I hired someone who seemed promising, said he was proficient
- 6:46Speaker 4: in a coding language, but on day one he couldn't
- 6:50Speaker 4: do even the basic.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Coding and that language.
- 6:53Speaker 4: So even after being given code code samples during his
- 6:57Speaker 4: exit interview, he admitted he'd never used it. He'd just
- 7:01Speaker 4: seen it used and thought, well, he could probably figure
- 7:04Speaker 4: it out.
- 7:04Speaker 3: The examples he gave.
- 7:06Speaker 4: In his interview were apparently stolen from coworkers.
- 7:10Speaker 3: So I don't know.
- 7:11Speaker 8: I'm just thinking, isn't something you can just see someone
- 7:14Speaker 8: do and be like, oh, yeah I got that, or
- 7:16Speaker 8: I'll figure out later.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll just do it all the first day of
- 7:19Speaker 3: the job. I'll just you know, I don't know how long.
- 7:20Speaker 4: You think, you as long as I remember to put
- 7:23Speaker 4: skills test. They actually have skills tests a lot. It's
- 7:26Speaker 4: just kind of crazy they someone would hire someone on
- 7:28Speaker 4: their w oh yeah, you know, they had to have
- 7:31Speaker 4: had more than one applicant.
- 7:32Speaker 5: Working interviews are like a real thing. Guys like you,
- 7:34Speaker 5: guys can do them like you don't have to.
- 7:37Speaker 6: Oh I saw that once. I just put it on
- 7:38Speaker 6: my resume.
- 7:39Speaker 5: Yeah okay.
- 7:43Speaker 4: So I don't know, And so I was, I was,
- 7:46Speaker 4: I was trying to think of the number, you know,
- 7:48Speaker 4: we've had, I don't know, examples of people saying they
- 7:51Speaker 4: can do things yeah in my career, and then you
- 7:55Speaker 4: get there and they can't. And in fact, I read
- 7:58Speaker 4: an entire Reddit thread last week. It was it was
- 8:01Speaker 4: just people talking about how to lie on their resume.
- 8:03Speaker 4: It was just literally yeah, telling them you worked here
- 8:06Speaker 4: or there.
- 8:06Speaker 5: Sometimes they don't check like your employment and like.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Totally lie about your employment.
- 8:11Speaker 5: Yeah whatever, just fill it in with bacon.
- 8:16Speaker 3: And they're crazy to me.
- 8:18Speaker 7: Yeah yeah, just lie.
- 8:21Speaker 4: And and there were people being telling their story of
- 8:23Speaker 4: how they lied that they got the job, and then
- 8:29Speaker 4: other people being like kudos, many like celebrating it.
- 8:33Speaker 5: So helpful, thank you. Wait till wait till they hear
- 8:35Speaker 5: about a social media screen though, when we're checking their
- 8:37Speaker 5: Reddit comments. And I was like, yeah, I light on
- 8:39Speaker 5: that job and I'm in there right now.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Oh yeah, that would be horrible. Media screens do catch
- 8:44Speaker 4: the Yeah right, I don't know that that, and I
- 8:48Speaker 4: know it happened, but I guess I was. Even in
- 8:51Speaker 4: the business that I'm in, I was still completely shocked
- 8:54Speaker 4: at just the rampant just say oh, yeah, I did it,
- 8:59Speaker 4: and here's what I did. Putting it, writing it down.
- 9:01Speaker 5: It's like saying you speak a language that you don't.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Coding is like a language. It's crazy.
- 9:08Speaker 4: So I hired a contractor, and this is a not
- 9:10Speaker 4: a not a builder, but like I think as a coder,
- 9:15Speaker 4: I hired a contractor after an accelerated interview like red
- 9:20Speaker 4: flag immediately accelerated interview, meaning hey, can you do this? Yeah,
- 9:24Speaker 4: I can do it, You're hired. I hired a contractor
- 9:27Speaker 4: after an accelerated and accelerated interview because I needed someone
- 9:30Speaker 4: now and they passed with flying colors.
- 9:33Speaker 5: So they said too, flying colors and promising, yeah, Emma.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Can you are you do marketing? Yeah? Awesome, flying colors.
- 9:45Speaker 4: On day two, a female report a female reports back
- 9:48Speaker 4: comes to me and says, this person won't let women
- 9:52Speaker 4: review his code. I talked to the new hire to
- 9:55Speaker 4: get a side of the story, and he confirmed, Uh
- 9:59Speaker 4: what what?
- 10:00Speaker 5: I want to know what he said when he confirmed.
- 10:01Speaker 4: And double well, he doubled, and he doubled down on okay,
- 10:05Speaker 4: I will not let a woman.
- 10:08Speaker 7: On day three, and why did he say?
- 10:10Speaker 3: Why he does? He say?
- 10:12Speaker 5: Here, I'm sure he said, and they probably don't want
- 10:14Speaker 5: to post that already.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Right on day three he was fired.
- 10:17Speaker 5: Okay, so as he should be. Yeah, yeah, I mean,
- 10:20Speaker 5: you're not gonna let some review your work.
- 10:21Speaker 3: It's a quick one.
- 10:22Speaker 4: I don't understand how you could possibly say that and
- 10:24Speaker 4: think that someone's going to be I don't let women review,
- 10:27Speaker 4: and they're you know, review my code, and someone's gonna
- 10:29Speaker 4: you know, the manager is gonna like, oh yeah, no problem.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, totally good, totally get it. Yeah, I understand, understandable.
- 10:37Speaker 5: I want to let a woman review my code, even
- 10:39Speaker 5: you don't worry about it.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Yeah that's crazy, Yeah.
- 10:42Speaker 3: That I don't know.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Sometimes what people will say, you know, they lose their
- 10:47Speaker 4: job for for for good reason, I think.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Yeah, a lot of these are very well deserved firing.
- 10:54Speaker 5: A lot of these are very well deserved of a fire.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Yeah, quick firings, guaranteed firing. So there's this one is
- 11:03Speaker 4: mind blowing, and I question whether it's real. Okay, yeah, okay,
- 11:07Speaker 4: So there was a lady at my job that robbed
- 11:10Speaker 4: It just sounds like something that happened in.
- 11:12Speaker 3: A TV show or like some folklore.
- 11:14Speaker 4: But there's a lady at my job that robbed a
- 11:16Speaker 4: bank on her lunch break. Remember remember the remember the
- 11:22Speaker 4: a couple episodes ago we had the was was it
- 11:25Speaker 4: like the.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Like it leads the kids, what was that? But he
- 11:31Speaker 3: like robbed ten banks?
- 11:32Speaker 5: Yeah? School, he was in school. He was a teacher.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Was he a teacher, Yeah.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Yeah, he was like a like a minister of something.
- 11:41Speaker 5: Oh oh yeah, like a college. It was no, it
- 11:45Speaker 5: was a private school. It was. It was a like
- 11:48Speaker 5: really high end private rob ten banks.
- 11:50Speaker 4: But this lady robbed on her lunch break, comes back,
- 11:54Speaker 4: then parked her car in the garage of a hospital
- 11:57Speaker 4: across the street, and came back to work like nothing.
- 12:01Speaker 6: Happened, but all the money in her car.
- 12:04Speaker 4: If someone, if someone hears this, say oh, we've heard
- 12:07Speaker 4: that story before.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Really you needed to guy.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Unfortunately, she had forgotten to take off her I D
- 12:13Speaker 4: Badge robbed the bank, so the cops just came over
- 12:16Speaker 4: to the building and arrested her.
- 12:18Speaker 7: By the end of the day, I'm going to give
- 12:22Speaker 7: her a name. Let's call her Lisa.
- 12:27Speaker 5: I was gonna say Linda.
- 12:28Speaker 6: That's Solinda, So come on.
- 12:34Speaker 5: I don't know. Maybe there's truths to it, but during
- 12:37Speaker 5: the lunch breakers, crazy like, how do you think you're
- 12:39Speaker 5: like have an hour long.
- 12:42Speaker 3: The whole id Badge thing just made me.
- 12:44Speaker 9: Think, no way, Yeah, yeah, I remember the one I
- 12:47Speaker 9: read last episode, episode before last one. They he robbed
- 12:51Speaker 9: that bank with his two co workers, and they call
- 12:52Speaker 9: him because he signed his autograph on the booklet at the.
- 12:55Speaker 5: Yeah, oh my god. Yeah, I'm sure there's like some
- 13:01Speaker 5: parts of that that are true, but definitely stretched a
- 13:05Speaker 5: little bit.
- 13:05Speaker 3: All right, So you guys, who's got one? You've got
- 13:08Speaker 3: a long one?
- 13:09Speaker 4: I do this is a submitted story, I think, yes.
- 13:11Speaker 5: So this story was submitted to me on LinkedIn, but
- 13:14Speaker 5: she asked if she could say anonymous, because she said
- 13:17Speaker 5: that a lot of the story would be very telling
- 13:20Speaker 5: if somebody was to see it someday as to who
- 13:22Speaker 5: they were and where she were. Yes, and so this
- 13:26Speaker 5: is a long one, guys, so buckle in. She said
- 13:29Speaker 5: she wanted to finally share her bad higher story. I
- 13:32Speaker 5: think she's been waiting to tell this one for a
- 13:33Speaker 5: long time. Right. I hired an intern to work with me,
- 13:37Speaker 5: who was a backup for someone else I was hoping
- 13:40Speaker 5: to hire. The day started as an intern was a
- 13:43Speaker 5: day we had to attend a horror event and it
- 13:46Speaker 5: was her actual first time walking through haunted houses. I
- 13:50Speaker 5: took her through and the night ended up being great
- 13:52Speaker 5: for our little first time meeting each other. We naturally
- 13:55Speaker 5: became close after that and had a pretty decent relationship.
- 13:59Speaker 5: Fast forward and I end up hiring her full time.
- 14:01Speaker 5: But I was going through some personal things a separation
- 14:04Speaker 5: from my marriage, and was trying to be there for her,
- 14:06Speaker 5: but was also being kind of distant. I would ask
- 14:09Speaker 5: her to get work done and she would get very
- 14:11Speaker 5: flustered and wouldn't know how to handle it. She was
- 14:14Speaker 5: overwhelmed by everything all the time, even as simple as
- 14:17Speaker 5: sending an email. One day, I saw her using traguyt
- 14:20Speaker 5: for every single project I assigned to her, which is fine,
- 14:23Speaker 5: but some things need to be personal. A few months
- 14:25Speaker 5: into her being full time, we hired a new intern
- 14:28Speaker 5: who she had recommended and knew. But as she was hired,
- 14:32Speaker 5: she was quickly jealous of the new intern and had
- 14:35Speaker 5: so The new intern, I guess, was having to sit
- 14:37Speaker 5: at her desk because of the lack of desk space
- 14:39Speaker 5: that they had, and she would go to my fitness
- 14:42Speaker 5: class with me. So that she's saying the new intern
- 14:44Speaker 5: would go to these fitness classes with her, and the
- 14:47Speaker 5: new intern in her got closer. The original hire was
- 14:50Speaker 5: getting jealous and upset even though she was invited to
- 14:52Speaker 5: do all these activities, but she wanted to get really
- 14:55Speaker 5: close to me and my friend. Since I wasn't letting
- 14:58Speaker 5: that happen, she decided she would tear me down. She
- 15:01Speaker 5: ended up quitting her job, making it about me. Then
- 15:04Speaker 5: she lied to my manager into the HR department about
- 15:08Speaker 5: all these things that I had did. She told them
- 15:11Speaker 5: that she had to drive me home from being too
- 15:13Speaker 5: drunk at an outing separate from a company event. She
- 15:15Speaker 5: told them I was using her apartment to have an affair.
- 15:18Speaker 5: Literally never saw her apartment. She told me I showed
- 15:21Speaker 5: her inappropriate photos of myself that I wouldn't want, like
- 15:24Speaker 5: wouldn't take to work, and that she would show them
- 15:28Speaker 5: to her while she was at work. I would ask
- 15:30Speaker 5: her to do things because that's her job. She would
- 15:33Speaker 5: even gaslight me in the office and say I never
- 15:35Speaker 5: told her to do something, but I would have actual
- 15:38Speaker 5: physical proof of it in an email or a message. Anyway,
- 15:41Speaker 5: HR asked me like thirty questions about ninety percent werelies,
- 15:44Speaker 5: and after three months of an investigation, I got fired.
- 15:48Speaker 5: What I didn't know if that's as bad as many
- 15:51Speaker 5: other bad hires. But since she's blocked me on all
- 15:53Speaker 5: my social media including LinkedIn, people keep sharing her posts
- 15:58Speaker 5: with me, and it's her complaining about how awful I
- 16:00Speaker 5: was and that she had to hide in her car
- 16:02Speaker 5: and cry from me yelling at her, which again I
- 16:04Speaker 5: never did. She posted on TikTok about how horrible her
- 16:07Speaker 5: boss was and of course this was her first job
- 16:10Speaker 5: and a lot of people of the company knew her
- 16:12Speaker 5: boss was me. Anyways, that's my story.
- 16:15Speaker 6: How old is this person she's now?
- 16:17Speaker 5: Like, I think like the person who's writing.
- 16:19Speaker 6: This, no, like the inter person that was causing all
- 16:22Speaker 6: the drama.
- 16:23Speaker 5: I think she sounds pretty young.
- 16:24Speaker 6: I was about to.
- 16:24Speaker 7: Say that it sounds like because yeah, it sounds like
- 16:26Speaker 7: in high school drama that she brought into the work
- 16:28Speaker 7: places is ridiculous.
- 16:30Speaker 5: And she, the lady who's telling the story must be
- 16:32Speaker 5: older because she was married, she had separation from marriage.
- 16:35Speaker 5: I think now she's like a really high position in
- 16:37Speaker 5: a different company, but she had an intern with working
- 16:39Speaker 5: for her, so this person had to be calledge Okay,
- 16:43Speaker 5: that's crazy.
- 16:45Speaker 4: It just like gave her an opportunity. And yeah, just
- 16:49Speaker 4: a lot of people, you know, bring a lot of
- 16:51Speaker 4: bring a lot of drama, and yeah, all that kind
- 16:53Speaker 4: of stuff into that into their workplaces.
- 16:56Speaker 5: Yeah, that's she gets, I guess being jealous of a.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Coworker said about you that aren't true.
- 17:01Speaker 7: Yeah, but but then like saying that she was doing
- 17:07Speaker 7: things at like non company events like.
- 17:09Speaker 5: Yeah I have to do and bringing it to HR.
- 17:12Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, it's just so dramatic.
- 17:14Speaker 5: I don't know, I think it. Yeah, I feel bad
- 17:18Speaker 5: for her.
- 17:18Speaker 3: The biggest thing for me is if it's all of
- 17:20Speaker 3: it's not true.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Yeah, right to have that said about you and then
- 17:24Speaker 4: and then have someone go on TikTok and post about you.
- 17:26Speaker 7: Yeah, apparently you have to be to come up with
- 17:30Speaker 7: all of these fake scenarios too, like person to do that.
- 17:34Speaker 5: Yeah, it's great post about them on LinkedIn. Like if
- 17:36Speaker 5: I'm a future like employer and I see her posting
- 17:39Speaker 5: about her previous like higher.
- 17:41Speaker 4: A social media screen on that particular person probably would
- 17:46Speaker 4: have shown.
- 17:46Speaker 8: Like most definitely, yeah, most crazy stuff, bad stuff, you mean,
- 17:52Speaker 8: not great posts?
- 17:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:54Speaker 9: Wow.
- 17:54Speaker 5: It kind of reminds me me and girls like when
- 17:56Speaker 5: they have like yeah that they write in and it's
- 17:58Speaker 5: like the literally yeah, the bad higher book. But that.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Social media screen at least for like yeah, at least
- 18:07Speaker 4: for senior people. But it seems like it might be
- 18:10Speaker 4: more effective for young people to make sure they even
- 18:13Speaker 4: know how to operate and on social media and complete
- 18:17Speaker 4: gas lighters on there.
- 18:18Speaker 5: So I feel like social media is sometimes even more
- 18:21Speaker 5: telling and modern day than like a background check sometimes too,
- 18:23Speaker 5: because like that's where people's lives are. They post everything
- 18:26Speaker 5: on there, and like there are a lot of things
- 18:28Speaker 5: that you know, they might not have gotten like a
- 18:30Speaker 5: record for, but they still could be doing. I think, yeah,
- 18:34Speaker 5: you could do.
- 18:34Speaker 4: You could do so much damage to someone or a
- 18:37Speaker 4: company on social media. You know, the background check and
- 18:42Speaker 4: the criminal records are important as well, but social media,
- 18:46Speaker 4: it's just crazy town.
- 18:47Speaker 5: Yeah, all right. This one's from Reddit. So this one's
- 18:51Speaker 5: a kind of short story. All right. So I was
- 18:54Speaker 5: a hiring manager out of Dunkin Donuts and I had
- 18:56Speaker 5: a guy submit an application and he had listed that
- 18:59Speaker 5: he was a Felt and I briefly asked him about it.
- 19:02Speaker 5: I really don't care. Tons of Fallons work here. And
- 19:04Speaker 5: he told me that he had two counts of grand
- 19:07Speaker 5: larceny from stealing from his previous jobs. His most recent
- 19:11Speaker 5: job was at another donuts.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Like you're saying in advance, yes, okay.
- 19:17Speaker 5: So he said he had two counts of grand larceny,
- 19:19Speaker 5: but it was from stealing from previous jobs. His previous
- 19:21Speaker 5: job was a dunkin Donuts, so he's going to apply
- 19:23Speaker 5: for another Duncan dot And he said that he was
- 19:28Speaker 5: bragging about how many times he got away with it
- 19:31Speaker 5: before getting caught, needless to say, he was not fit
- 19:34Speaker 5: for the position.
- 19:35Speaker 9: Well, I'm sorry that that really got I don't care.
- 19:40Speaker 6: Lots of felons work here, so you fit right in.
- 19:43Speaker 5: Yeah, like I don't really care. But also, why would
- 19:47Speaker 5: he just go to another dunkin Donuts? Like, change up
- 19:49Speaker 5: where you're gonna steal it?
- 19:50Speaker 6: For funny? What is it about the dunkin Donuts?
- 19:52Speaker 5: Is he just stealing the cash or is he stealing
- 19:55Speaker 5: the product?
- 19:56Speaker 8: I don't know, Like he didn't ask. He really wanted
- 19:59Speaker 8: to sneak peek at the seasonal.
- 20:02Speaker 5: Yeah, oh my goodness. All right, now, this is also
- 20:06Speaker 5: from Reddit. This is from somebody who's worked in recruiting
- 20:09Speaker 5: and HR for a very long time. So it's kind
- 20:12Speaker 5: of a list of their bad hires in one post.
- 20:14Speaker 5: So this is a lot of different but they're kind
- 20:16Speaker 5: of short. Yeah they are, OK, So it says get
- 20:19Speaker 5: some bullet points. Yeah, if you've had this many bad hires,
- 20:22Speaker 5: you start to wonder should I still be doing recruiting?
- 20:24Speaker 4: Like, well, it's you know, it's just I know, it's
- 20:27Speaker 4: tough work. It's super hard, and it can be incredibly rewarding,
- 20:32Speaker 4: like when you put somebody in the right job, the
- 20:35Speaker 4: right company, and they.
- 20:36Speaker 3: Just crush it. Yeah, that's got to feel good.
- 20:39Speaker 4: And if you look across a company you've been doing
- 20:41Speaker 4: business with, you can see kind of like your recruiting
- 20:43Speaker 4: DNA everywhere, and yeah, I've really done a good job.
- 20:45Speaker 3: You can feel good about that.
- 20:46Speaker 4: Yeah, but you know you also, if you do it
- 20:49Speaker 4: a lot, you stack up some missus.
- 20:51Speaker 5: Yeah, this one I think, I like this person was like,
- 20:55Speaker 5: let me just give you, give you miss so he says,
- 20:58Speaker 5: Oh boy, where to start. Most of these stories are
- 21:00Speaker 5: early in my career, but I've had bullet point a
- 21:04Speaker 5: candidate on trial for the murder of his wife, a
- 21:07Speaker 5: best selling author, slash medical doctor, brest surgeon who tried
- 21:11Speaker 5: to run over a police officer.
- 21:12Speaker 6: Were starting off strong.
- 21:14Speaker 5: Multiple people show up drunk or under the influence. Had
- 21:18Speaker 5: one guy who tried to fight the operations manager after
- 21:20Speaker 5: feeling disrespected by the manager's inquiries to his shaky work history.
- 21:25Speaker 4: How a lawyer try to that had to been like
- 21:29Speaker 4: early in the process because they're asking about his work history.
- 21:32Speaker 3: So you're talking about like week.
- 21:34Speaker 5: One, what have you done?
- 21:37Speaker 3: How to don't ask me?
- 21:40Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, don't ask me about my work rates?
- 21:44Speaker 3: Theory.
- 21:44Speaker 5: I'm he said none on his resume, all right. Had
- 21:51Speaker 5: a lawyer try to assume me and bill a client
- 21:54Speaker 5: A bill a client for time spent on an interview
- 21:56Speaker 5: because he was pissed that he didn't get the job.
- 21:58Speaker 5: Once we explained the bill to his company, they dropped
- 22:01Speaker 5: him like a fly. Alidy once presumably soiled herself in
- 22:05Speaker 5: a small interview room with me. I had a woman,
- 22:11Speaker 5: had a woman of color tell me I couldn't understand
- 22:13Speaker 5: diversity because I'm a white guy. Trows of candidates that
- 22:17Speaker 5: are terrible in interviews, bat on paper, et cetera. Try
- 22:20Speaker 5: to offload the rejection onto falsilties that are easier for
- 22:25Speaker 5: them to accept. Sorry, no, ma'am, it's not that you
- 22:27Speaker 5: are an older person. I had no idea because we
- 22:30Speaker 5: only spoke on the phone and you never revealed any
- 22:33Speaker 5: identifying information. But yes, please keep telling me in the
- 22:36Speaker 5: screening call that we won't hire you because we are
- 22:38Speaker 5: a get or because we are a agist. And another
- 22:42Speaker 5: you won't understand because you look young. Okay. Had a
- 22:45Speaker 5: greasy looking guy once tell me my colleague was hot
- 22:48Speaker 5: when she left to use the bathroom. Oh, there was
- 22:51Speaker 5: this one guy who stole a projector on his way
- 22:53Speaker 5: out of the building.
- 22:56Speaker 6: I'll be taking that, thank you.
- 23:00Speaker 3: I need one. I need one of these for Sundays.
- 23:02Speaker 3: I can't to watch the game one.
- 23:04Speaker 5: I can't believe this is I'm like, he still has
- 23:06Speaker 5: one more or two more. How a former cop apply
- 23:09Speaker 5: to a security job to find out he was forced
- 23:12Speaker 5: out of the force due to domestic violence jougs and oh, yeah,
- 23:15Speaker 5: he's a sex offender. Maybe a children's hospital isn't the
- 23:19Speaker 5: best place to apply for Oh my, well, that's true.
- 23:22Speaker 4: We see that all the time. People are applying somewhere.
- 23:24Speaker 4: We do their background check, and you're like, they're trying
- 23:26Speaker 4: to work where.
- 23:28Speaker 5: Out of school? Right at a children's hospital.
- 23:30Speaker 4: You're just like, wow, I'm glad these people do background checks.
- 23:33Speaker 5: Wow. This one was I was offered sexual favors from
- 23:36Speaker 5: candidates men and women. Wow. Okay wow. And so his
- 23:41Speaker 5: last line is so many more. These are just the
- 23:44Speaker 5: ones that come to mind.
- 23:45Speaker 4: I wonder how many recruiters are listening that list going
- 23:48Speaker 4: no way, just haven't experienced that before, and they're.
- 23:51Speaker 7: Just like, who's reading the Reddit thread, going oh that
- 23:54Speaker 7: was me.
- 23:55Speaker 5: Somebody replied to him and said Jesus Christ, are you
- 23:57Speaker 5: working for a McDonald's. Are you recruiting for me adults?
- 24:00Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 24:01Speaker 6: Maybe.
- 24:03Speaker 5: All right, this is my last story, everybody, This is
- 24:09Speaker 5: my last story for this episode. But the candidate submitted
- 24:12Speaker 5: a take home test by email, and they forgot to
- 24:16Speaker 5: extract the text of the email reply chain with his buddy,
- 24:19Speaker 5: in which if you scroll far enough you could see
- 24:22Speaker 5: a their buddy helped them with the test. Actually the
- 24:25Speaker 5: buddy did most of it and b the two of
- 24:27Speaker 5: them weighing up on the finer points of a drug
- 24:30Speaker 5: deal they were participating. I guess people don't understand like
- 24:34Speaker 5: the reply all in like the.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Forward, they had this big long conversation and yeah, he's like, hey,
- 24:40Speaker 4: checked these questions out and then he forwards the thing.
- 24:43Speaker 5: Also, like think about like.
- 24:46Speaker 4: Some forwards where like people that people.
- 24:48Speaker 7: Didn't double kicking though, especially for something like that.
- 24:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I almost never hit reply all people. I think
- 24:55Speaker 4: I aggrevate people.
- 24:56Speaker 7: Let me make sure they don't see my drug deal.
- 24:59Speaker 5: Yeah, who talks about a drug deal on email?
- 25:01Speaker 6: Though?
- 25:02Speaker 5: I know, like text about it, like you use something
- 25:05Speaker 5: else text message?
- 25:07Speaker 6: Literally all right, all right, keep it anywhere.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Quick quick break this podcast is sponsored by b checks.

- 25:46Speaker 3: Thank you b checks. So, Emma, what do you have?
- 25:49Speaker 7: Okay, I'm gonna decide it for this one is a
- 25:52Speaker 7: little long, so I'm gonna start with it.
- 25:56Speaker 6: It's from Reddit.
- 25:57Speaker 5: Okay, all right, here we go.
- 25:59Speaker 7: See I can keep this PG for the LISTENERSCU there. Yeah,
- 26:04Speaker 7: I'm gonna try to modify some things, all right. I
- 26:08Speaker 7: was the office coordinator for a large staffing agency between
- 26:12Speaker 7: two thousand and four and two thousand and six, so
- 26:14Speaker 7: this is a long time ago. My office was unique
- 26:18Speaker 7: in that it was situated on a client side in
- 26:20Speaker 7: a modular building. Our office only staffed for this one client,
- 26:24Speaker 7: but we had two hundred and twenty five to two
- 26:26Speaker 7: hundred and fifty employees at our client site. Every spring,
- 26:30Speaker 7: the client would hire approximately ten to twelve people from
- 26:33Speaker 7: our pool of people. This is a great opportunity for
- 26:36Speaker 7: people that had little to no previous experience or less
- 26:39Speaker 7: instellar work history to get a foot in the door
- 26:41Speaker 7: and an opportunity to advance to a job with great pay, benefits,
- 26:44Speaker 7: et cetera. That, of course, you also got some of
- 26:48Speaker 7: the scummiest people walking through your.
- 26:50Speaker 6: Door looking for work that I know. I know.
- 26:55Speaker 7: Our biggest disqualifying factors were people like were felons, sexual background.
- 27:03Speaker 5: Checks, sexual buttcheck.
- 27:07Speaker 6: That's what he says on the here. I'm assuming that's
- 27:10Speaker 6: what he means.
- 27:11Speaker 4: All right, So at first fact, let's not suggest that
- 27:14Speaker 4: all felons are unemployable, Yeah, because they absolutely are.
- 27:18Speaker 6: But okay, yeah, I'm assuming that's what he meant.
- 27:22Speaker 3: Because that's the people.
- 27:23Speaker 4: A lot of those people need those yeah yeah jobs
- 27:26Speaker 4: to get back into the workforce and get great pay
- 27:28Speaker 4: and benefits.
- 27:29Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 27:29Speaker 7: Another thing is testing positive for controlled substance and recent
- 27:34Speaker 7: violent crimes. We also tended to stay away from people
- 27:38Speaker 7: that have worked heavy manufacturing, doing repetitive stress to work
- 27:41Speaker 7: for a long period of time.
- 27:43Speaker 5: Okay.
- 27:46Speaker 7: I was second in command of our branch office and
- 27:48Speaker 7: reported directly to the branch manager.
- 27:51Speaker 6: We'll call her Mandy.
- 27:52Speaker 3: Okay, Mandy's a made up name.
- 27:54Speaker 7: Mandy was a very interesting woman, about forty to forty
- 27:59Speaker 7: five years old. The best way to describe Mandy was
- 28:05Speaker 7: she was she was a little crazy.
- 28:08Speaker 4: She reads the story and tries to reword it in
- 28:10Speaker 4: the I.
- 28:11Speaker 6: Don't know if I could reword that.
- 28:13Speaker 5: I'll just keep it out.
- 28:14Speaker 6: She was a little crazy.
- 28:15Speaker 5: Okay.
- 28:17Speaker 7: Mandy absolutely loved me and treated me like I was
- 28:19Speaker 7: her golden child. I was in charge when Mandy was absent,
- 28:23Speaker 7: and all the shifts shift leads would call me when
- 28:27Speaker 7: they had a problem. We had an employee I will
- 28:30Speaker 7: call him Fred. Fred lived in a weekly rate hotel
- 28:34Speaker 7: that was a dog right down the street from his
- 28:37Speaker 7: favorite bar, which I will call Mini's. Fred worked on
- 28:41Speaker 7: one of the day shifts that ran six am to
- 28:43Speaker 7: six pm, and from hold on, I can't keep up
- 28:52Speaker 7: the story so long. Okay, this is just.
- 28:58Speaker 9: Little details about like where he lived and everything that
- 29:00Speaker 9: has really nothing to do.
- 29:02Speaker 5: That has really nothing to do.
- 29:04Speaker 6: Yeah, He's then in the hotel whatever near the bar.
- 29:06Speaker 5: Like's like, yeah, yeah, I.
- 29:10Speaker 6: Love the detail that I really love. It helps me paint.
- 29:12Speaker 6: It helps me paint the picture.
- 29:17Speaker 7: Fred had started off as a decent employee, but his
- 29:20Speaker 7: attendance started slipping as he was sorry.
- 29:26Speaker 6: I had to switch to as he was calling in sick.
- 29:31Speaker 6: Fred was one.
- 29:33Speaker 7: Fred was of the notion that he was going to
- 29:35Speaker 7: work just enough to be able to earn himself enough
- 29:37Speaker 7: money to be able to drink and pay weekly rent
- 29:40Speaker 7: and no more. Fred had been counseled repeatedly by myself
- 29:44Speaker 7: and finally the branch manager on his attendance. He was
- 29:47Speaker 7: on his last morning and was informed that any more
- 29:49Speaker 7: attendants violations in the next thirty days would be met
- 29:52Speaker 7: with termination. Three days later, Fred comes into my office
- 29:56Speaker 7: hysterical that his mother was in the the town next
- 30:01Speaker 7: had a stroke and was dying in the hospital. He
- 30:03Speaker 7: really needed to be with her. I grant him a
- 30:05Speaker 7: one day approved absence as long as he is going
- 30:08Speaker 7: to be with his mother.
- 30:08Speaker 5: At the hostel days.
- 30:11Speaker 4: It was really generous, he said, as long.
- 30:13Speaker 5: As he's going to be at the hospital with his mother.
- 30:15Speaker 5: Because God forbid, he go to Minnie's like.
- 30:18Speaker 7: He thanks me profusely, and I call him a cab.
- 30:21Speaker 7: When Mandy comes into the office, I inform her of
- 30:23Speaker 7: the situation. She is going to wait about an hour
- 30:27Speaker 7: and then go down to Minnie's to see if he's there.
- 30:30Speaker 7: Half an hour after I spoke with Mandy, the office
- 30:32Speaker 7: receives a call. It's from Fred's sister. Her and their
- 30:36Speaker 7: mother had been doing some shopping downtown and her mother
- 30:39Speaker 7: stepped out in front of a car and gotten hit.
- 30:42Speaker 7: Her mother is in bad shape. They are airlifting her
- 30:45Speaker 7: to a trauma hospital. I take her name in number
- 30:48Speaker 7: and we'll have Fred give her a call. I call
- 30:50Speaker 7: down to Minnie's and ask the bartender if Fred is there.
- 30:53Speaker 7: It is an emergency. They put Fred on the phone.
- 30:57Speaker 7: I relay the information from his sister without mention anything
- 31:00Speaker 7: about his outs.
- 31:01Speaker 6: It's like, not even gonna.
- 31:02Speaker 3: Bring it up.
- 31:03Speaker 6: Yeah, gonna bring it up.
- 31:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:06Speaker 7: Fred then blows up on me via the phone about
- 31:09Speaker 7: how dare I call him at Minnie's. He informs me
- 31:13Speaker 7: that he doesn't care if his mom's in critical condition?
- 31:17Speaker 7: How dare I ruin the sanctity of Minnies by calling him?
- 31:20Speaker 6: What is like? Then inform him.
- 31:22Speaker 7: That he is fired, don't bother coming to work tomorrow,
- 31:26Speaker 7: and then hung up the phone. I then informed the
- 31:29Speaker 7: branch manager of hold On know of this, and she
- 31:34Speaker 7: lasts and says, take all your things, like everything. It's fine,
- 31:39Speaker 7: and she is glad she doesn't have to terminate him now,
- 31:42Speaker 7: like she's glad she didn't have to be the one
- 31:44Speaker 7: to do it.
- 31:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:45Speaker 7: I call and have the customer deactivate his access card,
- 31:48Speaker 7: and I enter his termination notes in the employee database.
- 31:51Speaker 7: Twenty minutes later, a cab pulls up and Fred jumps
- 31:55Speaker 7: out and comes running into our office and starts screaming
- 31:58Speaker 7: at me from the entrance to the building while walking
- 32:00Speaker 7: towards my office. Mandy hears the combotion and grabs him
- 32:04Speaker 7: and pulls him into her office and plops him down
- 32:06Speaker 7: in a chair. The conversation he ends with him saying,
- 32:10Speaker 7: f you, I don't work for you, I work for
- 32:12Speaker 7: the client whatever, blah blah blah. He then storms out
- 32:15Speaker 7: of the office. We look out and see him try
- 32:17Speaker 7: to use his access card in the gate to gain
- 32:20Speaker 7: entry to the factory. When it doesn't work, he begins
- 32:22Speaker 7: kicking the gate. At that point, I call nine one
- 32:24Speaker 7: one and report an aggressive drunk ex employee attempting to
- 32:28Speaker 7: break into a secure facility.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Yeah from the sancafy of spread, walks around to the
- 32:37Speaker 2: front of the client and starts banging and kicking on
- 32:40Speaker 2: their locked front glass door, demanding to be let in.
- 32:43Speaker 7: I call the receptionist and inform her that the police
- 32:45Speaker 7: are on the way. He ends up kicking their glass
- 32:48Speaker 7: window and spiderwebbing it before being tased by the police.
- 32:52Speaker 6: Like smashing.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Oh yeah, sees the show.
- 32:56Speaker 7: Yeah, our client ended up having him banned from the
- 33:00Speaker 7: property and press charges on him. Whatever. Three days later,
- 33:04Speaker 7: I get a call from Fred asking me a sweetest pie,
- 33:07Speaker 7: he can have another chance at his job. I had
- 33:09Speaker 7: to inform him that even if I was willing, which
- 33:12Speaker 7: I was not, he had acted in such a way
- 33:14Speaker 7: that the client had in banned from their property. They
- 33:18Speaker 7: were so terrified of him my hands were tied. He
- 33:20Speaker 7: thanked me for the for my time and hung up.
- 33:24Speaker 7: Then this is how it ends. Get ready, it's.
- 33:28Speaker 5: Oh, it's crazier, it's kind of dark, It's kind of oh.
- 33:31Speaker 7: Two years two years later. Two years later, Fred was
- 33:36Speaker 7: killed in a bar fight after being hit in the
- 33:39Speaker 7: head with a barstool at Minnies.
- 33:44Speaker 5: Okay, and that is the only stip that story.
- 33:46Speaker 6: First of all, there's so much to unpack here.
- 33:50Speaker 4: More stories like that, that's just these. You can't ruin
- 33:54Speaker 4: my day withol.
- 33:55Speaker 6: I wasn't trying to ruin your day.
- 33:57Speaker 7: You want it, you wanted the craziest story.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Crazy.
- 34:00Speaker 5: First of all, I want to say that, like I don't.
- 34:03Speaker 5: I don't like think I want to say called Kharma.
- 34:05Speaker 5: But he really spoke his mother being in the hospital
- 34:08Speaker 5: in two existence pretty much I knowing about her.
- 34:10Speaker 7: I know.
- 34:10Speaker 6: There's so much to unpack here, the way.
- 34:12Speaker 4: They hate there's so much detail in that story.
- 34:14Speaker 5: Yeah, and then the sactity of Minis literally ended up
- 34:17Speaker 5: being his dead.
- 34:18Speaker 7: It's real that It's it's like so many how dare
- 34:21Speaker 7: you call me at Minie?
- 34:22Speaker 5: Right, that's crazy, It's pretty crazy.
- 34:27Speaker 4: I think I think about that when I hear that story.
- 34:30Speaker 4: I think about being a recruiter. Yeah, and in an
- 34:34Speaker 4: operation like that when you've got so many people, yes,
- 34:37Speaker 4: and one client. I think they said they had two
- 34:39Speaker 4: hundred and fifty people on one on one client and
- 34:43Speaker 4: just all the stuff, yeah, you have to deal with, right,
- 34:47Speaker 4: just all the emergencies from the people that you hired. Yeah,
- 34:50Speaker 4: and most most of the time those are like really
- 34:52Speaker 4: high pressure placements. Got to have the people. The people
- 34:56Speaker 4: are hard to find, yeah, and so you know you
- 34:59Speaker 4: end up some times not getting the greatest. You absolutely
- 35:04Speaker 4: get some people that you're gonna have challenges with and
- 35:06Speaker 4: so you're, you know, your life every day is you know,
- 35:08Speaker 4: you wake up and wonder what what emergency am I
- 35:11Speaker 4: going to deal with on somebody at place.
- 35:13Speaker 3: At a client's place.
- 35:14Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's always tough because think about the pressure
- 35:17Speaker 4: of of the recruiter of like that one hired does
- 35:20Speaker 4: something so bad that ye lose the account.
- 35:23Speaker 3: Now we're going to lose not just the one.
- 35:26Speaker 4: Position, but yeah, the whole thing. Yeah, all the placements
- 35:30Speaker 4: as they switch.
- 35:31Speaker 3: So I don't know, it's very very very tough.
- 35:34Speaker 4: All right, that that I I that's got to be
- 35:37Speaker 4: it for today because story no pleaset tell me you
- 35:43Speaker 4: have something that's.
- 35:44Speaker 9: You know, a light, I'll have better I got I'll
- 35:46Speaker 9: have better ones next funny one.
