- 0:00Speaker 1: Remember season Tickets for the football Husky's twenty twenty five
- 0:04Speaker 1: home schedule at Pratt and Whitney Stadium are now on sale.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Go to Yukon Huskies dot com slash football to learn
- 0:10Speaker 1: more and get your tickets. Today, we're back with Dan
- 0:12Speaker 1: Hurley and coach a little quick football thing, because I
- 0:16Speaker 1: know you're a guy that pays attention to what's going
- 0:18Speaker 1: on on the gridiron. Not only you come, but professionally.
- 0:21Speaker 1: I'm sorry about the Bengals. They made a nice run,
- 0:24Speaker 1: they couldn't get into postseason. Yukon won nine games this year,
- 0:28Speaker 1: best year in quite a while. They got into a
- 0:30Speaker 1: postseason situation. They won a game up at Fenway Park.
- 0:35Speaker 1: As you view it from the outside looking in, how
- 0:37Speaker 1: important is that? Do you think to the university that
- 0:40Speaker 1: the football team turning it around like that?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's you know, I think it's critically
- 0:47Speaker 2: important to the athletic department obviously, to the university and
- 0:58Speaker 2: to Yukon basketball selfishly. You know, I think, you know,
- 1:04Speaker 2: the for us to have a quality football program, a
- 1:10Speaker 2: program that could compete, you know, and against you know,
- 1:15Speaker 2: the best teams in college football, and to have the
- 1:18Speaker 2: resources you know, and potentially at some point, you know, uh,
- 1:26Speaker 2: a permanent conference set up, you know, whether it's you know,
- 1:29Speaker 2: Coach k talking about the Big East and the A
- 1:32Speaker 2: C C. You know, combining, which sounds like a great
- 1:36Speaker 2: idea to me, sounds like a a no brainer. But yeah,
- 1:43Speaker 2: I think football, I think there's there's an opportunity I
- 1:47Speaker 2: think for for football with what Coach Moore is doing
- 1:50Speaker 2: and the support and and the way that the Yukon
- 1:54Speaker 2: is is a This is a Husky state with three
- 1:56Speaker 2: million people, of which everyone is as a Yukon fan.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And you can't tell me that we couldn't as this
- 2:05Speaker 2: product has grown and improved and now won a Bowl
- 2:08Speaker 2: game and won nine games and have created this level
- 2:11Speaker 2: of excitement that we can't sell out or have huge
- 2:15Speaker 2: crowds at Wrenschler and become a top flight football university
- 2:22Speaker 2: as well. We're great and everything that we do athletically,
- 2:26Speaker 2: and it's a world class university from an academic standpoint educationally.
- 2:31Speaker 2: So you know, it's just you want to be at
- 2:35Speaker 2: a place where on weekends in the state of Connecticut
- 2:39Speaker 2: you can go and tailgate watch a big time for
- 2:42Speaker 2: everyone loves football. Everyone loves football, and there's nothing better
- 2:47Speaker 2: than going to a great football game and a packed
- 2:50Speaker 2: out stadium. The only thing that could equal it is
- 2:53Speaker 2: going to a big time college basketball game. You know,
- 2:56Speaker 2: it was like the best things to go and see
- 2:59Speaker 2: college football, college basketball, intense, high level games. And you
- 3:04Speaker 2: know that the state could support it, and you know,
- 3:07Speaker 2: I know that it's critical as we had the revenue
- 3:10Speaker 2: sharing and all these different things that are going on
- 3:13Speaker 2: as the sports are changing forever. We need a healthy,
- 3:17Speaker 2: outstanding football.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'll tell you what. I was sold on
- 3:20Speaker 1: it at Fenway because they're about twenty seven twenty eight
- 3:24Speaker 1: thousand people in there, and I swear there was twenty
- 3:26Speaker 1: thousand plus Yukon fans maybe more. It felt like it
- 3:30Speaker 1: was a Yukon home game. And obviously it's you know,
- 3:33Speaker 1: right up the mass Pike from where we are, but
- 3:35Speaker 1: it was pretty cool. I got to say, all right,
- 3:38Speaker 1: let's get back quickly to Liam McNeely. Now we've been
- 3:40Speaker 1: talking about him for a week or two or three,
- 3:42Speaker 1: you know, hopeing his progress is moving along, and then
- 3:45Speaker 1: he's getting closer to being able to play. What can
- 3:47Speaker 1: you tell us there? Has he been able to practice?
- 3:50Speaker 1: Where's he at?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yeah? So he's at a little boot and he's feeling
- 3:54Speaker 2: a lot better. So but you know, his timeline is
- 3:58Speaker 2: is not obviously you're not going to see him this week,
- 4:04Speaker 2: I think is uh, you know, he'll eventually be able
- 4:07Speaker 2: to uh, you know, to transition to the court of
- 4:10Speaker 2: doing some non live things. Uh, you know, potentially uh,
- 4:15Speaker 2: you know, this week into next and then you're just
- 4:19Speaker 2: you know, you're hoping to see him, you know, at
- 4:22Speaker 2: some point in January without you know, without obviously you know,
- 4:27Speaker 2: speeding him up in any way whatsoever. You do not
- 4:30Speaker 2: want a lingering high ankle sprain. You know, we're able
- 4:35Speaker 2: to uh, you know, he's doing everything he can from
- 4:38Speaker 2: all of the traditional things too, you know, uh you know,
- 4:42Speaker 2: you know, all the different red light therapy and you
- 4:46Speaker 2: know I've suggested the hyperbaric chamber and some different you know, uh,
- 4:51Speaker 2: you know, let's get this guy the latest, you know,
- 4:54Speaker 2: the latest advances and in technology. Let's not just do
- 4:59Speaker 2: the cookie cutter high ankle spraining things here. You know,
- 5:02Speaker 2: this is uh, this is big time sports. Like let's
- 5:05Speaker 2: uh yeah, let's make sure we're doing whatever the Celtics
- 5:08Speaker 2: would be doing. Uh, let's make sure that we were
- 5:11Speaker 2: doing that for for Liam, Uh, not just to get
- 5:14Speaker 2: him on the court quicker, Uh, but to make sure
- 5:17Speaker 2: this guy who's a who's gonna be a you know,
- 5:19Speaker 2: a lottery pick. Let's make sure this guy is ready
- 5:24Speaker 2: to go.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm going into the mail bag here. My wife
- 5:28Speaker 1: Jean had a question for me. You use the word aquleman.
- 5:30Speaker 1: She didn't know what you were talking about. So can
- 5:32Speaker 1: you extrapolate on that a little bit what you meant
- 5:36Speaker 1: by that?
- 5:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, obviously Liam has got superpowers, uh, as
- 5:41Speaker 2: an athlete and as a basketball player, he's he's uh,
- 5:45Speaker 2: you know, he's one of the top handful of freshmen
- 5:48Speaker 2: in the country, top two or three in terms of
- 5:50Speaker 2: how much he does for his team. So he's got
- 5:52Speaker 2: superpowers when he but when he's in the pool, because
- 5:58Speaker 2: he can't do anything on the court on a hard surface,
- 6:03Speaker 2: those superpowers that he's no longer thor he now comes there,
- 6:07Speaker 2: he's aquaman because he's in the water doing training. So yeah,
- 6:12Speaker 2: and you think like that, he doesn't. You know, It's
- 6:16Speaker 2: like Bill Parcells, how he would needle his players that
- 6:19Speaker 2: were hurt a little bit, you know, like I've got
- 6:24Speaker 2: I'm an old school coach that way. Uh. You know,
- 6:27Speaker 2: players that are injured, you know, you can needle them
- 6:29Speaker 2: a little bit about hey man, are you hey ackeman,
- 6:32Speaker 2: are you going to be out in the courts room?
- 6:36Speaker 2: I love it.
- 6:36Speaker 1: That's a good Parcels reference. You're right about him, all right.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Quick thought on Creighton. First of all, I got to
- 6:41Speaker 1: start with cal Brenner, the big dude seven seventy's played
- 6:44Speaker 1: one hundred and fifty college games out of Saint Louis, Missouri,
- 6:48Speaker 1: three time Defensive Player of the Year. How does he
- 6:52Speaker 1: compare to that big dude at Purdue that the Huskies
- 6:56Speaker 1: took down from the championship game last year, Zach Edy?
- 7:00Speaker 2: Yeah, is his defensive impact is a lot different. He
- 7:03Speaker 2: just he just shuts down so much at the rim.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I mean, it's it's more of a comp to to
- 7:11Speaker 2: Donovan than it is to Zach Edy in terms of
- 7:16Speaker 2: you know, his his impact as a roller in the
- 7:20Speaker 2: ball screen game on offense, and then his rim protection
- 7:23Speaker 2: is similar to Donovan's. Uh. And then now his low
- 7:26Speaker 2: post game with how seasoned he is as a fifty
- 7:30Speaker 2: year player and he's such an older player. Yeah, he's
- 7:34Speaker 2: got a low post arsenal. Uh, that's grown a great deal.
- 7:38Speaker 2: So it's rare that a that a player of his
- 7:41Speaker 2: ability is still in college at this point. It's kind
- 7:44Speaker 2: of you know, you're dumbfounded that the NBA hasn't come
- 7:48Speaker 2: and got him, uh as a first round pick by now.
- 7:52Speaker 1: So yeah. The other thing too with him, he made
- 7:56Speaker 1: nine threes in his first three years playing in college
- 7:59Speaker 1: last year sixteen. And he's not afraid to shoot it
- 8:03Speaker 1: out there. So I mean, how much of a threat
- 8:05Speaker 1: is that in a game like this.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I would prefer him not shooting. I would prefer
- 8:09Speaker 2: him shooting him and not making him than him dunking
- 8:12Speaker 2: and fouling out my centers. Yeah, you know. So, you know,
- 8:16Speaker 2: the best thing that he does is that cult does
- 8:19Speaker 2: is obviously dominate around the basket at both ends of
- 8:23Speaker 2: the court. But he's a capable three point shooter. He's
- 8:26Speaker 2: a very good passer. I mean, he's he's one of
- 8:30Speaker 2: the best players in the country in college and you know,
- 8:34Speaker 2: you just you you, and he's a first round pick.
- 8:36Speaker 2: And I don't know why it's taking so long for
- 8:40Speaker 2: the NBA to recognize this guy as somebody that you know,
- 8:46Speaker 2: could go right into an NBA team and be a
- 8:48Speaker 2: rotation player right away. Yeah.
- 8:50Speaker 1: No, I'm totally with you on that, all right, coach,
- 8:52Speaker 1: We appreciate it. We're gonna see a Saturday twelve noon tip.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Let's get gamble rock and early and get back and win.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Call him again, Yes, let's do it. Sounds like a plan,
- 9:02Speaker 1: all right. That's Dan Hurley back in a moment with
- 9:04Speaker 1: more of the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show onlear Field.
