- 0:12Hello friends Sean, here it is Thursday, It is the 4th of
- 0:17January. How are we almost already at the
- 0:20end of the first week of this year?
- 0:23So much fun to be had. Still, I hope you are going well
- 0:27and I hope you're enjoying the story.
- 0:29Isn't it wonderful as we hear about these early days as Israel
- 0:34is beginning to be formed? If we put this into its
- 0:37chronological perspective, Israel has arrived in the
- 0:41Promised Land. God has set up a covenant with
- 0:45His people, and then they have had the time of the judges where
- 0:50these leaders ended up, well, not leading effectively, and the
- 0:55people have gone into disarray. And this is where the story of
- 0:59Samuel lands. It's a time when when people
- 1:04really had forgotten that the God of the universe was their
- 1:08God and they had adopted the local customs in that area and
- 1:13they needed some serious reminding of what was what and
- 1:16who was who and drawing back. And that is where the character
- 1:21of Samuel is such a key. And today is the day that we see
- 1:25Samuel start to step out. He's not that little kid hearing
- 1:28God's voice in the temple at night anymore.
- 1:31He has grown, his mentor has died, and he is now stepping
- 1:36into the role of leader, priest, judge, God's man, God's local
- 1:41representative for his people. So let us pick up the story, and
- 1:46here's Samuel stepping into that leadership role as we read
- 1:49together. First Samuel, Chapter 7.
- 2:02So the men of Kiryathjiram came to get the Ark of the Lord.
- 2:07They took it to the hillside home of Abinadab and ordained
- 2:11Eliezer, his son, to be in charge of it.
- 2:15The Ark remained in Kiryathjiram for a long time, 20 years in
- 2:21all. During that time all Israel
- 2:24mourned because it seemed the Lord had abandoned them.
- 2:29Then Samuel said to all the people of Israel, if you want to
- 2:33return to the Lord with all your hearts, get rid of your foreign
- 2:38gods and your images of Ashtoreth, turn your hearts to
- 2:44the Lord and obey him alone. Then he will rescue you from the
- 2:50Philistines. So the Israelites got rid of
- 2:53their images of Baal and Ashtoreth, and worshipped only
- 2:58the Lord. Then Samuel told them, gather
- 3:02all of Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.
- 3:08So they gathered at Mizpah, and in a great ceremony drew water
- 3:13from a well and poured it out before the Lord.
- 3:17They also went without food all day and confessed that they had
- 3:21sinned against the Lord. It was at Mizpah that Samuel
- 3:26became Israel's judge. When the Philistine rulers heard
- 3:31that Israel had gathered at Mizpah, they mobilized their
- 3:35army and advanced. The Israelites were badly
- 3:38frightened when they learned that the Philistines were
- 3:40approaching. Don't stop pleading with the
- 3:44Lord our God to save us from the Philistines.
- 3:47They begged Samuel. So Samuel took a young lamb and
- 3:51offered it to the Lord as a whole burnt offering.
- 3:55He pleaded with the Lord to help Israel, and the Lord answered
- 3:59him. Just as Samuel was sacrificing
- 4:03the burnt offering, the Philistines arrived to attack
- 4:06Israel. But the Lord spoke with a mighty
- 4:10voice of Thunder from heaven that day, and the Philistines
- 4:14were thrown into such confusion that the Israelites defeated
- 4:18them. The men of Israel chased them
- 4:21from Mizpah to a place below Bethkaar, slaughtering them all
- 4:26along the way. Samuel then took a large stone
- 4:30and placed it between the towns of Mizpah and Jeshana.
- 4:35He named it Ebenezer, which means the stone of help, for he
- 4:41said Up to this point the Lord had helped us, so the
- 4:47Philistines were subdued and didn't invade Israel again.
- 4:51For some time and throughout Samuel's lifetime, the Lord's
- 4:56powerful hand was raised against the Philistines.
- 5:00The Israelite villages near Ekron and Gath that the
- 5:04Philistines had captured were restored to Israel along with
- 5:08the rest of the territory that the Philistines had taken, and
- 5:12there was peace between Israel and the Amorites in those days.
- 5:17Samuel continued as Israel's judge for the rest of his life.
- 5:22Each year he travelled around, setting up his court, first at
- 5:26Bethel, then at Gilgal, and then at Mizpah.
- 5:31He judged the people of Israel at each of these places.
- 5:35Then he would return to his home at Rama, and he would hear cases
- 5:40there too. And Samuel built an altar to the
- 5:43Lord at Rama. What a wonderful story this is
- 5:56for us, Lord, where we see Samuel and all of these
- 6:01Israelites together in this place.
- 6:03When they hear the terrible news that they're under attack.
- 6:06And what do they do? They turn to you and they pray
- 6:12for your help, Lord. Let that be your model that
- 6:17shapes us in our life. That when we find life
- 6:22challenging and we find ourselves faced with impossible
- 6:25odds or even just difficult odds, that we turn to you.
- 6:31And that when things go our way and we have so much celebration
- 6:34to do, let us turn to you as well.
- 6:38And thanks and all the in between times when life is just
- 6:43going along as per usual, let's always live our lives, inviting
- 6:50you into each step of each moment.
- 6:54You are our God and we are your people, and we want to live in a
- 6:59way that makes that so obvious that we live for you, Lord.
- 7:06So soften our hearts so that we can move ourselves from the
- 7:11pedestal and place you there. That our lives can reflect your
- 7:15priorities and your glory rather than anything else that might
- 7:20seem like a good idea at the time.
- 7:23We praise you, and it's in the saving name of Jesus that we
- 7:27pray all these things. Amen.
