Speaker 1: Chapter twenty two, The Chemistry of mister Krook. When the
• 0:05
Speaker 1: celebrated Hibbs next visited the shop of Krook, that mystic
• 0:10
Speaker 1: and criminologist chemist, he found the premises were impressively and
• 0:15
Speaker 1: even amazingly enlarged with decorations in the Eastern style. Indeed,
• 0:21
Speaker 1: it would not have been too much to say that
• 0:24
Speaker 1: mister Krook's shop occupied the whole of one side of
• 0:28
Speaker 1: a showy street in the West End, the other side
• 0:32
Speaker 1: being a blank facade of public buildings. It would be
• 0:36
Speaker 1: no exaggeration to say that mister Krook was the only
• 0:40
Speaker 1: shopkeeper for some distance round. Mister Crook still served in
• 0:44
Speaker 1: his shop, however, and politely hastened to serve as customer
• 0:49
Speaker 1: with the medicine that was customary. Unfortunately, for some reason
• 0:55
Speaker 1: or other, history was in connection with this shop. Only
• 0:59
Speaker 1: two to repeat itself, and after a vague but soothing
• 1:04
Speaker 1: conversation with a chemist on the subject of vitriol and
• 1:07
Speaker 1: its effects on human happiness, mister Hibbs experienced the acute
• 1:12
Speaker 1: annoyance of once more beholding his most intimate friend, mister
• 1:17
Speaker 1: Joseph Levison entered the same fashionable emporium, but Indeed, Levison's
• 1:24
Speaker 1: own annoyance was much too acute for him to notice
• 1:28
Speaker 1: any on the part of Hibbs. Well, he said, stopping
• 1:33
Speaker 1: dead in the middle of the shop. Here is a
• 1:36
Speaker 1: fine confounded kettle of fish. It is one of the
• 1:40
Speaker 1: tragedies of the diplomatic that they are not allowed to
• 1:43
Speaker 1: admit either knowledge or ignorance. So Hibbs looked gloomily wise
• 1:49
Speaker 1: and said, pursing his lips, you mean the general situation.
• 1:55
Speaker 1: I mean the situation about this everlasting business of the
• 1:59
Speaker 1: inside times, said Lewison impatiently. Lord Ivywood went up, specially
• 2:05
Speaker 1: when his leg was really bad, to get it settled
• 2:09
Speaker 1: in the house in a small, non contentious bill, providing
• 2:13
Speaker 1: that the sign shouldn't be enough if the liquor hadn't
• 2:16
Speaker 1: been on the spot three days. Oh, but said Hibbs,
• 2:22
Speaker 1: sinking his voice to soft solemnity, as being one of
• 2:25
Speaker 1: the initiate, A thing like that can be managed, don't
• 2:29
Speaker 1: you know? Of course it can, said the other, still
• 2:34
Speaker 1: with the same slightly irritable air it was. But it
• 2:39
Speaker 1: does not seem to occur to you any more than
• 2:41
Speaker 1: it did to his lordship, that there is rather a
• 2:44
Speaker 1: weak point after all in this business of passing acts
• 2:48
Speaker 1: quietly before they are unpopular. Has it ever occurred to
• 2:52
Speaker 1: you that if a law is really kept too quiet
• 2:55
Speaker 1: to be opposed, it may also be kept too quiet
• 2:58
Speaker 1: to be obeyed. It's not so easy to hush it
• 3:02
Speaker 1: up from a big politician without running the risk of
• 3:05
Speaker 1: hushing it up even from a common policeman. But surely
• 3:10
Speaker 1: that can't happen by the nature of things. Count it
• 3:15
Speaker 1: by God, said j Levison, appealing to a less pantheistic authority.
• 3:21
Speaker 1: He unfolded a number of papers from his pocket, chiefly
• 3:25
Speaker 1: chief local newspapers, but some of them letters and telegrams.
• 3:29
Speaker 1: Listen to this, he said. A curious incident occurred in
• 3:34
Speaker 1: the village A Fool to Weell in Surrey yesterday morning.
• 3:38
Speaker 1: The baker's shop of mister Whiteman were suddenly besieged by
• 3:42
Speaker 1: a knot of the loser tides of the locality, who
• 3:45
Speaker 1: appeared to have demanded beer instead of bread, basing their
• 3:49
Speaker 1: claim on some ornament object erected outside the shop, Which
• 3:53
Speaker 1: object they asserted to be a sign board within the
• 3:56
Speaker 1: meaning of the Act. There you see, they haven't even
• 4:01
Speaker 1: heard of the new Act. What do you think of this?
• 4:05
Speaker 1: From the Clapton Conservative. The contempt of socialists for the
• 4:10
Speaker 1: law was well illustrated yesterday when a crowd collected round
• 4:14
Speaker 1: some wooden ensign of socialism set up before mister Dukedale's
• 4:18
Speaker 1: rapery stores, refused to disperse, though told that their action
• 4:23
Speaker 1: was contrary to the law. Eventually the malcontents joined the
• 4:28
Speaker 1: procession following the wooden emblem. And what do you say
• 4:33
Speaker 1: to this? Stop press news? A chemist in Pimlico has
• 4:38
Speaker 1: been invaded by a huge crowd demanding buer and asserting
• 4:43
Speaker 1: the provision of it to be among his duties. The
• 4:46
Speaker 1: chemist is of course well acquainted with his immunities in
• 4:50
Speaker 1: the matter, especially under the new Act. But the old
• 4:54
Speaker 1: notion of the importance of the sign seemed still to
• 4:58
Speaker 1: possess the populace, and even to a certain extent paralyzed
• 5:02
Speaker 1: the police. What do you say to that? Isn't it
• 5:07
Speaker 1: as plain as Monday morning that this flying inn has
• 5:11
Speaker 1: flown a day in front of us, as all such
• 5:14
Speaker 1: lies do. There was a diplomatic silence. Well asked the
• 5:20
Speaker 1: still angry levison of the still dubious hibs, what do
• 5:24
Speaker 1: you make of all that? One ill acquainted with that
• 5:28
Speaker 1: relativity essential to all modern minds. Might possibly have fancied
• 5:34
Speaker 1: that mister Hibbs could not make much of it. However,
• 5:38
Speaker 1: that maybe his explanations or incapacity for our explanations, were
• 5:43
Speaker 1: soon tested with a fairly positive test. For Lord Ivywood
• 5:48
Speaker 1: actually walked into the shop of mister Krook. Good day, gentlemen,
• 5:54
Speaker 1: he said, looking at them with an expression which they
• 5:57
Speaker 1: both thought baffling and even a little concerting. Good morning,
• 6:03
Speaker 1: mister Brook, I have a celebrated visitor for you, and
• 6:07
Speaker 1: he introduced the smiling Missuyserer. The prophet had fallen back
• 6:12
Speaker 1: on a comparatively quiet costume this morning, a mere matter
• 6:16
Speaker 1: of purple and orange or what not, but his age
• 6:20
Speaker 1: face was now perennially festive. The cast progresses, he said.
• 6:26
Speaker 1: Everywhere the cast progresses, you hear his loudship's beautiful speech.
• 6:32
Speaker 1: I have heard many, said Hibbs. Gracefully that can be
• 6:35
Speaker 1: so described. The prophet means what I was saying about
• 6:40
Speaker 1: the ballot paper amendment at said Ivywood casually. It seems
• 6:45
Speaker 1: to me the alphabet of statesmanship to recognize now that
• 6:49
Speaker 1: the great Oriental British Empire has become one corporate hold
• 6:54
Speaker 1: with the occidental one. Look at our universities with their
• 6:58
Speaker 1: Mohomidan students. Soon there may be a majority. Now are we,
• 7:04
Speaker 1: he went on, still more quietly, are we to rule
• 7:07
Speaker 1: this country under the forms of representative government. I did
• 7:12
Speaker 1: not pretend to believe in democracy, as you know, but
• 7:15
Speaker 1: I think it would be extremely unsettling and incalculable to
• 7:19
Speaker 1: destroy representative government. If we are to give Moslem Brittan
• 7:24
Speaker 1: representative government, we must not make the mistake we made
• 7:28
Speaker 1: about the Hindus and military organization which led to the mutiny.
• 7:33
Speaker 1: We must not ask them to make a cross on
• 7:36
Speaker 1: their ballad papers, for though it seems a small thing,
• 7:40
Speaker 1: it may offend them. So I brought in a little
• 7:43
Speaker 1: bell to make it optional, between the old fashioned cross
• 7:47
Speaker 1: and an upward curved mark that might stand for a crescent.
• 7:51
Speaker 1: And as it is rather easier to make, I believe
• 7:54
Speaker 1: it will be generally adopted. And so said the radiant
• 7:59
Speaker 1: old Turk. The little light easily made curly mark is
• 8:03
Speaker 1: substituted for the hard, difficult double made cutting both ways mark.
• 8:10
Speaker 1: It is the more good for hygiene, For you must know,
• 8:14
Speaker 1: and indeed our good and wise chemist will tell you
• 8:17
Speaker 1: that the Saracenic and the Arabian and the Turkish physicians
• 8:22
Speaker 1: were the first of all physicians, and taught all miracles
• 8:26
Speaker 1: to the barbarians of the Frankish territories. And many of
• 8:30
Speaker 1: the most modern, the most fashionable remedies are thus of
• 8:34
Speaker 1: the Oriental origin. Yes, that is quite true, said Crook,
• 8:39
Speaker 1: in his rather cryptic and unsympathetic way. The powder called aronine,
• 8:45
Speaker 1: lately popularized by mister Bowes, now Lord Helvelen, who tried
• 8:49
Speaker 1: it first on birds, is made of plain desert sand.
• 8:54
Speaker 1: And what you see in prescriptions as cannabis indienses is
• 8:58
Speaker 1: what our lively neighbors of Asia described more energetically as bom.
• 9:05
Speaker 1: And so in the same way, said miss Eistra, making
• 9:09
Speaker 1: southing passes with his brown hand like a mesmerist. In
• 9:14
Speaker 1: the same way, the making of the crescent is hygienic,
• 9:19
Speaker 1: the making of the cross is non hygienic. The crescent
• 9:23
Speaker 1: was a little wave, as a leaf, as a little
• 9:27
Speaker 1: curling feather. And he waved his hand with real artistic
• 9:31
Speaker 1: enthusiasm towards the capering curves of the new Turkish decoration,
• 9:36
Speaker 1: which Ivy would made fashionable in many of the fashionable shops.
• 9:41
Speaker 1: But when you make the cross, you must make the
• 9:44
Speaker 1: one line sow, and he swept the horizon with the
• 9:48
Speaker 1: brown hand. And then you go back and make the
• 9:51
Speaker 1: other lion so, and he made an upward gesture suggestive
• 9:56
Speaker 1: of one constraint to lift a pine tree. And then
• 10:00
Speaker 1: you become very ill. As a matter of fact, mister Crook,
• 10:04
Speaker 1: said Ivywood, in his polite manner, I brought the prophet
• 10:08
Speaker 1: here to consult you as the best authority on the
• 10:12
Speaker 1: very point you have just mentioned, the use of hashish
• 10:16
Speaker 1: or the hemp plant. I have it on my conscience
• 10:20
Speaker 1: to decide whether these oriental stimulants or sedatives shall come
• 10:24
Speaker 1: under the general veto we are attempting to impose on
• 10:28
Speaker 1: the vulgar intoxicans. Of course, one has heard of the
• 10:33
Speaker 1: horrible and voluptuous visions and the kind of insanity attributed
• 10:38
Speaker 1: to the Assassins and the old man of the mountain.
• 10:42
Speaker 1: But on the one hand, we must clearly discount much
• 10:46
Speaker 1: for the illimitable pro Christian bias with which the history
• 10:50
Speaker 1: of these Eastern tribes is told in this country. Would
• 10:54
Speaker 1: you say the effect of hashish was extremely bad? And
• 10:58
Speaker 1: he turned first to the prophet. You will say masts
• 11:03
Speaker 1: said that seer with candor, many mosss, more mossus taller
• 11:08
Speaker 1: and dollar masks, till they reach the moon, and you
• 11:12
Speaker 1: hear a dreadful voice in the very high mosque calling
• 11:16
Speaker 1: the musen, and you will think it is allah. Then
• 11:20
Speaker 1: you will see wives, many many wives, more wives than
• 11:24
Speaker 1: you yet have. Then you will be rolled over and
• 11:28
Speaker 1: over in a great pink and purple sea, which is
• 11:32
Speaker 1: still wise. Then you will go to sleep. I have
• 11:35
Speaker 1: only done it once, he concluded mildly. And what do
• 11:40
Speaker 1: you think about hushish mister Krook, asked ivy Wood thoughtfully.
• 11:45
Speaker 1: I think it's hemp at both ends, said the chemist.
• 11:50
Speaker 1: I fear, said Lord Ivywood, I don't quite understand you.
• 11:54
Speaker 1: A hemp and drink, a murder and a hemp and robe.
• 11:58
Speaker 1: That's my experience in India, said mister Krook. It is true,
• 12:02
Speaker 1: said ivy Wood, yet more reflectively, that the thing is
• 12:06
Speaker 1: not Muslim in any sense. In its origin there is
• 12:10
Speaker 1: that agains the assassins always, and of course, he added,
• 12:14
Speaker 1: with a simplicity that had something noble about it, their
• 12:18
Speaker 1: connection with Saint Louis discredits them. Rather after a space
• 12:24
Speaker 1: of silence, he said, suddenly, looking at Krook. So it
• 12:28
Speaker 1: isn't the sort of thing you chiefly sell. No, my lord,
• 12:32
Speaker 1: it isn't what I chiefly sell, said the chemist. He
• 12:35
Speaker 1: also looked steadily, and the wrinkles of his young old
• 12:38
Speaker 1: face were like hieroglyphics. The cast progress everywhere it progress,
• 12:45
Speaker 1: cried miss Eystra, spreading his arms and relieving a momentary
• 12:48
Speaker 1: tension of which he was totally unaware. The hygienic curve
• 12:53
Speaker 1: of the crescent will soon superimpose himself for your plus sign.
• 12:58
Speaker 1: You already use him for the short syllables in your dactyle,
• 13:02
Speaker 1: which is doubtless of oriental origin. You see the new game.
• 13:08
Speaker 1: He said this so suddenly that everyone turned round to
• 13:11
Speaker 1: see him produce from his purple clothing a brightly colored
• 13:15
Speaker 1: and highly polished apparatus from one of the grand toy shops,
• 13:19
Speaker 1: which on examination seemed to consist of a kind of
• 13:23
Speaker 1: blue slate in a red and yellow frame, a number
• 13:27
Speaker 1: of divisions being already marked on the slate, about seventeen
• 13:31
Speaker 1: slate pencils with covers of different colors, and a vast
• 13:35
Speaker 1: number of printed instructions stating that it was but recently
• 13:40
Speaker 1: introduced from the remote east, and was called knots and crescents.
• 13:46
Speaker 1: Strangely enough, Lord Ivywood, with all his enthusiasm, seemed almost
• 13:51
Speaker 1: annoyed at the emergence of this asiatic discovery, more especially
• 13:56
Speaker 1: as he really wanted to look at mister Crook as
• 13:59
Speaker 1: hard as mister Krook was looking at him. Heads coughed
• 14:03
Speaker 1: considerately and said, of course all our things came from
• 14:07
Speaker 1: the east, And he paused, being suddenly unable to remember
• 14:12
Speaker 1: anything but curry, to which he was very rightly attached.
• 14:16
Speaker 1: He then remembered Christianity and mentioned that too, everything from
• 14:22
Speaker 1: the East could, of course. He ended with an air
• 14:25
Speaker 1: of light omniscience. Those who in later ages and other
• 14:30
Speaker 1: fashions failed to understand how miss Eystra had ever got
• 14:34
Speaker 1: a mental hold on men like Lord Ivywood left out
• 14:38
Speaker 1: two elements in the Man which are very attractive, especially
• 14:42
Speaker 1: to other men. One was that there was no subject
• 14:47
Speaker 1: on which the little Turk could not instantly produce a theory.
• 14:51
Speaker 1: The other was that though the theories were crowded, they
• 14:55
Speaker 1: were consistent. He was never known to accept an illogical compliment.
• 15:01
Speaker 1: You are an error, he said, solemnly, to hisbbs. Because
• 15:04
Speaker 1: you say all things from the east are good, there
• 15:08
Speaker 1: is the east wind. I do not like him. He
• 15:11
Speaker 1: is not good. And I think very much that all
• 15:15
Speaker 1: the warmth, and all the weldliness, and the colors and
• 15:18
Speaker 1: the poems and the religiousness that the East was meant
• 15:22
Speaker 1: to give you have been much poisoned by this accident,
• 15:26
Speaker 1: this east wind. When you see the green flag of
• 15:30
Speaker 1: the prophet, you do not think of a green field
• 15:33
Speaker 1: in summer. You think it blown by the east wind.
• 15:37
Speaker 1: When you read of the moonfaced hoories, you think not
• 15:40
Speaker 1: of our moons like oranges, but of your moons like snowballs.
• 15:46
Speaker 1: Your new voice contributed to the conversation. Its contribution, though
• 15:51
Speaker 1: imperfectly understood, appeared to be naar world. She'd dire white
• 15:57
Speaker 1: for a little Jew in his dressing girl, little Jews
• 16:02
Speaker 1: in their dressing gowns, as their drinks as wee as
• 16:05
Speaker 1: are drinks. Bitter miss. The speaker, who appeared to be
• 16:11
Speaker 1: a powerful person of the plastering occupation, looked round for
• 16:15
Speaker 1: the unmarried female he had ceremonially addressed, and seemed honestly
• 16:20
Speaker 1: abashed that she was not present. Ivy would look at
• 16:25
Speaker 1: the man with that expression of one turned to stone,
• 16:29
Speaker 1: which his physique made so effective in him. But j Levison, Secretary,
• 16:34
Speaker 1: could summon no such powers of self petrification upon his soul.
• 16:39
Speaker 1: The slaughter read of that unhallowed eve arose when first
• 16:44
Speaker 1: the ship and he who were foes, when he discovered
• 16:47
Speaker 1: that the poor are human beings, and therefore are polite
• 16:51
Speaker 1: and brutal. Within a comparatively short space of time, he
• 16:55
Speaker 1: saw that two other men were standing behind the plastering person,
• 17:00
Speaker 1: one of them apparently urging him to counsel the moderation,
• 17:04
Speaker 1: which was an ominous sign. And then he lifted his
• 17:07
Speaker 1: eyes and saw something worse than any omen all. The
• 17:12
Speaker 1: glass frontage of the shop was a cloud of crowding faces.
• 17:16
Speaker 1: They could not be clearly seen since night was closing
• 17:19
Speaker 1: in on the street, and the dazzling fires of ruby
• 17:23
Speaker 1: and amethyst, which the lighted shop gave to its great
• 17:27
Speaker 1: globes of liquid, rather veiled than revealed them. But the
• 17:32
Speaker 1: foremost actually flattened and whitened their noses on the glass,
• 17:37
Speaker 1: and the most distant were nearer than mister Levison wanted them. Also,
• 17:43
Speaker 1: he saw a shape erect outside the shop, the shape
• 17:46
Speaker 1: of an upright staff and a square board. He could
• 17:49
Speaker 1: not see what was on the board. He did not
• 17:52
Speaker 1: need to see. Those who saw Lowed Ivywood at such
• 17:56
Speaker 1: moments understood why he stood out so strongly in the
• 18:00
Speaker 1: history of his time. In spite of his frozen face
• 18:03
Speaker 1: and a fanciful dogmas, he had all the negative nobility
• 18:07
Speaker 1: that is possible to man. Unlike Nelson and most of
• 18:11
Speaker 1: the great heroes, he knew not fear. Thus he was
• 18:15
Speaker 1: never conquered by a surprise, but was cold and collected
• 18:19
Speaker 1: when other men had lost their heads, even if they
• 18:22
Speaker 1: had not lost their nerves. I will not conceal from you, gentlemen,
• 18:27
Speaker 1: said Lord Ivywood, that I have been expecting this. I
• 18:32
Speaker 1: will not even conceal from you that I have been
• 18:35
Speaker 1: occupying mister Crook's time until it occurred. So far from
• 18:39
Speaker 1: excluding the crowd, I suggest it would be an excellent
• 18:43
Speaker 1: thing if mister Crook could accommodate them all in this shop.
• 18:48
Speaker 1: I want to tell as soon as possible, as large
• 18:51
Speaker 1: a crowd as possible, that the law is altered, and
• 18:54
Speaker 1: this folly about the flying inn has ceased. Come in,
• 18:58
Speaker 1: all of you, come in and listen. Thank you, said
• 19:03
Speaker 1: a man connected in some way with motor busses, who
• 19:06
Speaker 1: lurched in behind the plasterer. Thank you, sir, said a
• 19:10
Speaker 1: bright little clock mender from Croydon, who immediately followed him.
• 19:15
Speaker 1: Thanks said a rather bevelded clerk from Camberwell, who came
• 19:19
Speaker 1: next in the rather beveldered procession. Thank you, said mister
• 19:25
Speaker 1: Dorrian Wimple, who entered carrying a large round cheese. Thank you,
• 19:30
Speaker 1: said Captain Delroy, who entered carrying a large cask of round.
• 19:35
Speaker 1: Thank you very much, said mister Humphrey Pump, who entered
• 19:39
Speaker 1: the shop carrying the sign of the old ship. I
• 19:43
Speaker 1: fear it must be recorded that the crowd which followed
• 19:47
Speaker 1: them dispensed with all expressions of gratitude. But though the
• 19:51
Speaker 1: crowd filled his shop so there was no standing room
• 19:54
Speaker 1: to spare, Leedison still lifted his gloomy eyes and beheld
• 19:59
Speaker 1: his gloomy omen. For though there were very many more
• 20:03
Speaker 1: people standing in the shop, there seemed to be no
• 20:06
Speaker 1: less people looking in at the window. Gentlemen, said Ivywood.
• 20:12
Speaker 1: All jokes come to an end. This swan has gone
• 20:15
Speaker 1: so far as to be serious, and it might have
• 20:18
Speaker 1: become impossible to correct public opinion and expound to law
• 20:23
Speaker 1: abiding citizens the true state of the law. Had I
• 20:27
Speaker 1: not been able to meet so representative an assembly in
• 20:31
Speaker 1: so central a place, it is not pertinent to my
• 20:35
Speaker 1: purpose to indicate what I think of the jest which
• 20:38
Speaker 1: Captain Delroy and his friends have been playing upon you
• 20:42
Speaker 1: for the last few weeks. But I think Captain Delroy
• 20:46
Speaker 1: will himself concede that I am not jesting with all
• 20:51
Speaker 1: my heart, said Delroy, in a manner that was unusually
• 20:54
Speaker 1: serious and even sad. Then he added, with a sigh,
• 20:59
Speaker 1: as you truly say, my jest has come to an end.
• 21:04
Speaker 1: That wooden sign, said ivywood, pointing at the queer blue ship,
• 21:08
Speaker 1: can be cut up for firewood. It shall lead decent
• 21:12
Speaker 1: citizens at devil's dance. No more. Understand at once and
• 21:16
Speaker 1: for all, before you learn it from policemen or prison warden.
• 21:21
Speaker 1: You are under a new law. That sign is a
• 21:24
Speaker 1: sign of nothing. You can no more buy and sell
• 21:27
Speaker 1: alcohol by having that outside your house than if it
• 21:31
Speaker 1: were a lamp post. Do you mean to say, governor?
• 21:35
Speaker 1: Said the plaster, with the dawn of intelligence on his
• 21:39
Speaker 1: large face, which was almost awful to watch. That I'm
• 21:43
Speaker 1: to have a glass of bitter. Try a glass of rum,
• 21:47
Speaker 1: said Patrick. Captain Delroy said, Lord Ivywood, if you give
• 21:52
Speaker 1: one drop from that cast to that man, you are
• 21:55
Speaker 1: breaking the law and you shall sleep in jail. Are
• 21:59
Speaker 1: you quite sure, asked Delroy, with a strange sort of anxiety,
• 22:04
Speaker 1: I might escape. I'm quite sure, said Ivywood. I have
• 22:09
Speaker 1: posted the police with full powers for the purpose as
• 22:12
Speaker 1: you will find. I mean that this business shall end
• 22:16
Speaker 1: here tonight. If I find the policeman what told me
• 22:20
Speaker 1: I could have a drink just now, I'll knock his
• 22:23
Speaker 1: helment into a fancy necktie, I will, said the plasterer.
• 22:28
Speaker 1: Why ain't people allowed to know the law? They ain't
• 22:32
Speaker 1: got no right to alter the law in the dark
• 22:34
Speaker 1: like that, said the clock mender. Damn the new law.
• 22:39
Speaker 1: Where is the new law? Asked the clerk. The words
• 22:43
Speaker 1: inserted by the reason Act, said Lord Ivywood, with the
• 22:46
Speaker 1: cold courtesy of the conqueror, atter the effect that alcohol
• 22:50
Speaker 1: cannot be sold, even under a lawful sign, unless alcoholic
• 22:55
Speaker 1: liquors have been kept for three days on the premises, Delroy,
• 23:01
Speaker 1: that cask of yours has not, I think been three
• 23:04
Speaker 1: days on this premises. I command you to see it
• 23:08
Speaker 1: up and take it away, surely, said Patrick, with an
• 23:12
Speaker 1: innocent air. The best remedy would be to wait till
• 23:15
Speaker 1: it has been three days on the premises we might
• 23:18
Speaker 1: all get to know each other better. And he looked
• 23:21
Speaker 1: round at the ever increasing multitude with hazy benevolence. You
• 23:26
Speaker 1: shall do nothing of the kind, said his lordship, with
• 23:30
Speaker 1: sudden fierceness. Well answered Patrick wearily. Now I come to
• 23:35
Speaker 1: think of it, perhaps I won't. I'll have one drink
• 23:40
Speaker 1: here and go home to bed like a good little boy,
• 23:43
Speaker 1: and the constables shall arrest you thunder ivywood. Why nothing
• 23:49
Speaker 1: seems to suit you, said the surprised Delroy. Thank you, however,
• 23:54
Speaker 1: for explaining the new laws so clearly. Unless alcoholic liquors
• 23:58
Speaker 1: have been three days on the premises, I shall remember
• 24:02
Speaker 1: it now, you always explain such things so clearly. You
• 24:07
Speaker 1: only made one legal slip. The constables will not arrest me.
• 24:12
Speaker 1: And why not, demanded the nobleman white with passion, Because
• 24:17
Speaker 1: cried Patrick Delroy, and his voice lifted itself like a
• 24:21
Speaker 1: lonely trumpet before the charge. Because I shall not have
• 24:26
Speaker 1: broken the law, because alcoholic liquors have been three days
• 24:30
Speaker 1: on these premises, three months more likely, because this is
• 24:35
Speaker 1: a common grog shop, Philip ivy wood, because that man
• 24:39
Speaker 1: behind the counter lives by selling spirits to all the
• 24:43
Speaker 1: cowards and hypocrites who are rich enough to bribe a
• 24:46
Speaker 1: bad doctor. And he pointed suddenly at the small medicine
• 24:50
Speaker 1: glass on the counter by Hibs and Legison. What is
• 24:55
Speaker 1: that man drinking? He demanded. Hibbs put out his hand
• 24:58
Speaker 1: hastily for his glass, but the indignant clock mender had
• 25:02
Speaker 1: snatched it first and drained it at a gulp. Scotch,
• 25:06
Speaker 1: he said, and dashed the glass to atoms on the floor.
• 25:10
Speaker 1: Right you are too, wrote the plasterer, seizing a big
• 25:14
Speaker 1: medicine bottle in each hand. We're going to have a
• 25:18
Speaker 1: little of the fun now we are. What's in that
• 25:21
Speaker 1: big red bowl up there? I reckon it's port, fetch
• 25:26
Speaker 1: it down, Bill ivy would turned to Krook and said, scarcely,
• 25:31
Speaker 1: moving his lips of marble, this is a lie. It
• 25:35
Speaker 1: is the truth, answered Krook, looking back at him with
• 25:39
Speaker 1: equal steadiness. Do you think you made the world that
• 25:43
Speaker 1: you should make it over again? So easily? The world
• 25:47
Speaker 1: was made badly? Said Philip, with a terrible note in
• 25:50
Speaker 1: his voice, and I will make it over again. Almost
• 25:55
Speaker 1: as he spoke, the glance front of the shop fell inward, shattered,
• 26:00
Speaker 1: and there was wreckage among the moonlike colored bulls, almost
• 26:04
Speaker 1: as if spheres of celestial crystal cracked at his blasphemy.
• 26:08
Speaker 1: Through the broken windows came the roar of that confused
• 26:12
Speaker 1: tongue that is more terrible than the elements, the cry
• 26:16
Speaker 1: that the deaf kings have heard at last, the terrible
• 26:19
Speaker 1: voice of mankind. All the way down the long fashionable
• 26:24
Speaker 1: street lined with the crooked plate glass, that glass was
• 26:28
Speaker 1: crashing amid the cries of a crowd, rivers of gold
• 26:32
Speaker 1: and purple wines sprawled about the pavement. Out in the open,
• 26:37
Speaker 1: shouted Dalroy, rushing out of the shop, sign board in hand,
• 26:42
Speaker 1: the dark woodle, parking furiously at his heels, while Dorian
• 26:46
Speaker 1: with the cheese and Humphrey with the keg followed as
• 26:49
Speaker 1: rapidly as they could. Good night, my lord. Perhaps our
• 26:54
Speaker 1: meeting next may fall a Tamworth in Newcastle Hall. Come long,
• 27:00
Speaker 1: friends and form uck. Don't waste time destroying property. We're
• 27:04
Speaker 1: all to start. Now, where are we all going to
• 27:08
Speaker 1: asked the plasterer. We're all going into Parliament, answered the captain.
• 27:13
Speaker 1: As he went to the head of the crowd. The
• 27:16
Speaker 1: marching crowd turned two or three corners, and at the
• 27:20
Speaker 1: end of the next long street Dorian Wimpole, who was
• 27:24
Speaker 1: towards the tail of the procession, so again the gray
• 27:27
Speaker 1: cyclops tower of Saint Stephen's, with its one great golden eye,
• 27:33
Speaker 1: as he had seen it, against that pale green sunset
• 27:37
Speaker 1: that was at once quiet and volcanic on the night
• 27:41
Speaker 1: he was betrayed by sleep and by a friend. Almost
• 27:45
Speaker 1: as far off at the head of the procession, he
• 27:48
Speaker 1: could see the sign with the ship and the cross
• 27:51
Speaker 1: going before them like an ensign, and hear a great
• 27:55
Speaker 1: voice singing, men, that are men again? Who goes home?
• 28:00
Speaker 1: Tocsin and Trumpeter? Who goes home? The boy is Valedictory,
• 28:05
Speaker 1: who is for victory? Who is for liberty? Who goes home?
• 28:12
Speaker 1: End of Chapter twenty two.
