- 0:11Speaker 1: So the driver that we had today, he always has
- 0:14Speaker 1: incredible music playing, and I think it's the radio, and
- 0:18Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, my song came on again. And then
- 0:21Speaker 1: today I spotted that his hits different playlists. So really
- 0:25Speaker 1: he's just like, it's not the radio. He's just juicing
- 0:27Speaker 1: you up? He's just making us feel good? He's making
- 0:29Speaker 1: us feel good. Because it's like within a mix enough
- 0:32Speaker 1: that it would be like on the radio. And I'm like, oh, sick.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I haven't heard this song in a couple of years.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I didn't know this was on the radio. Like today,
- 0:38Speaker 1: I heard your song changing. And I was like. No,
- 0:42Speaker 1: that was on the radio. I was like, I was
- 0:43Speaker 1: on the radio. And I look up and then he's like,
- 0:45Speaker 1: it's like listed our names. And he changed it. I
- 0:48Speaker 1: was like, this is nice to juice this up, like
- 0:50Speaker 1: play our own stuff in the car. This happened the
- 0:52Speaker 1: other day with Malte Marie, our daughter. She and I
- 0:56Speaker 1: were in the car and. There was a playlist, and
- 0:59Speaker 1: I think it was one that we made at some
- 1:01Speaker 1: point that had all her favorite songs and then a
- 1:04Speaker 1: few of our songs mixed in so that she would
- 1:06Speaker 1: get to know our music a bit more. And every
- 1:09Speaker 1: time one of our songs would come on, she'd look
- 1:10Speaker 1: over at me and she'd go, is this you? Yeah,
- 1:14Speaker 1: she'd go, sing it. She wanted me to sing along
- 1:16Speaker 1: to this.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Sing it.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I love it. Do your job. I love that. That's great.
- 1:23Speaker 1: We don't listen to this in this house. You sing
- 1:25Speaker 1: it in this house.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Sing it.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I love that. Um, we've had a kind of a
- 1:29Speaker 1: crazy week. A little bit crazy. We've been getting after
- 1:32Speaker 1: it because it was Daniel's birthday. Oh my gosh.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And also my birthday, which I gotta be, I gotta
- 1:40Speaker 1: talk about this because I think a lot of folks
- 1:44Speaker 1: that listen to our podcast might relate to this as
- 1:47Speaker 1: a now 34 year old man. I think it's weird
- 1:50Speaker 1: to like get excited about my birthday. And it's, it's,
- 1:53Speaker 1: it's because of trauma. You're obviously not a Leo.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Obviously not. But I will acknowledge that I had a
- 1:59Speaker 1: thing happen when I was nine where someone like made
- 2:01Speaker 1: me feel bad about being excited about my birthday. What,
- 2:04Speaker 1: what happened? I, it was like a teacher basically. And
- 2:06Speaker 1: I went in with this birthday hat and I went
- 2:08Speaker 1: to put it on and, and I came out all
- 2:10Speaker 1: excited and she's like scolded me for making it about
- 2:12Speaker 1: myself or something. I was like, okay. And then I
- 2:15Speaker 1: basically like never knew why I was embarrassed to tell
- 2:18Speaker 1: my birthday. And then I talked to a therapist about it.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Like that's probably it.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Wow.
- 2:21Speaker 1: That's probably it. Um, so it's still with me. I
- 2:24Speaker 1: think it's weird to be like, Come to my party
- 2:26Speaker 1: Can I Yeah well I'm glad that I'm proud of
- 2:29Speaker 1: you then That you wore that birthday hat On the
- 2:30Speaker 1: flight over Yeah I actually own that company now The
- 2:33Speaker 1: birthday hat company Yeah In your face Edible arrangement Sponsored
- 2:37Speaker 1: too But it was a great birthday I think it
- 2:40Speaker 1: was A great week And we should celebrate Oh my
- 2:42Speaker 1: gosh It was It was really good And we didn't
- 2:45Speaker 1: drink anything Not a single drop Alright let's get to
- 2:47Speaker 1: business We have an amazing guest Such a great guest
- 2:50Speaker 1: Forever huge Really we've known him for like Almost 20
- 2:53Speaker 1: years You've grown up with him So have we And
- 2:57Speaker 1: he's just always so much fun to be around, and
- 2:59Speaker 1: we're all fans. Please give it up for our guest today,
- 3:02Speaker 1: Kenan Thompson. Hey, what's going on, man?
- 3:05Speaker 3: What's up, my dudes?
- 3:06Speaker 1: Congratulations on another season.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Oh, thanks, bud.
- 3:09Speaker 1: You've been on 52 seasons.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Yeah, man. Season 52, and I've been there for all 52.
- 3:16Speaker 3: That's crazy.
- 3:18Speaker 1: That is wild. When you decided to, when you created
- 3:21Speaker 1: the idea for SNL, was that something that just kind
- 3:23Speaker 1: of came naturally for you?
- 3:25Speaker 3: It's crazy.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I was like up in Canada where I'm from. And
- 3:30Speaker 2: I just had a thought to myself. I was watching
- 3:33Speaker 2: all of these really funny like improv people, one of
- 3:36Speaker 2: them being my dear friend, John Candy. And I just
- 3:41Speaker 2: had this thought like, you know, these people just aren't celebrated.
- 3:45Speaker 1: And you're like, I'm going to bring it to England
- 3:47Speaker 1: one day. We are good, man.
- 3:49Speaker 3: How you feeling about those G-men? Oh, yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 1: What a week we had. Pretty, pretty insane. I think
- 3:56Speaker 1: it's the super bowl. You know, we're going to the
- 3:57Speaker 1: super bowl. It's obvious.
- 3:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:59Speaker 1: That's the first text that went out. I think we're
- 4:01Speaker 1: winning the super bowl. They did look like a completely
- 4:04Speaker 1: different team to last year, which is great. Uh, coach
- 4:07Speaker 1: Harbaugh setting the tone there. Um, we first met you,
- 4:11Speaker 1: I think all the way back in the kind of
- 4:13Speaker 1: the beginning of our, of our career. Um, when we
- 4:16Speaker 1: went on to SNL, uh, for the Valentine's day special, um,
- 4:20Speaker 1: Back in 08 or 09? That's right. You guys were babies.
- 4:26Speaker 1: You were the first baby performers.
- 4:30Speaker 3: You really were.
- 4:31Speaker 1: You're saying you've always been cool to us. We've had
- 4:33Speaker 1: a chance to work with you at a few different
- 4:35Speaker 1: points with our roast on Netflix a couple years back,
- 4:38Speaker 1: which we were just reminiscing about us being in football
- 4:40Speaker 1: because Kevin had that one piece we shot at the
- 4:43Speaker 1: SoFi and he kicked the field goal. It was the
- 4:47Speaker 1: only field goal kicked by the team that day.
- 4:49Speaker 3: First try.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. I mean, who doesn't love you guys, man?
- 4:56Speaker 2: You guys have been so nice and cool with me too.
- 4:58Speaker 2: That was like the most ballerific way to ever go
- 5:01Speaker 2: to SoFi.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Like that's just you guys' life. You know what I mean?
- 5:04Speaker 3: It's casual for you. But for me, that's incredible.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Like you guys were all security up and golf carting
- 5:12Speaker 2: through the bottoms of SoFi. And then you get to
- 5:14Speaker 2: go out on the field and like kick a field
- 5:16Speaker 2: goal in front of the actual fans.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Like, Come on, man.
- 5:20Speaker 1: When they asked me to do that, I was like,
- 5:21Speaker 1: this is setting me up for so much failure. Like,
- 5:24Speaker 1: and just to get booed. Dude, I think you guys
- 5:26Speaker 1: were supposed to shoot before the game started, but there
- 5:28Speaker 1: was delays or something. They couldn't get on the field.
- 5:29Speaker 1: So they were like, hey, you're going to do it
- 5:30Speaker 1: during halftime. And then you guys run out there. Like,
- 5:33Speaker 1: it's so much pressure, but you guys delivered. The real
- 5:36Speaker 1: story is that they asked all three of us to
- 5:37Speaker 1: do it, and Joe and I chickened out. Yeah, we
- 5:38Speaker 1: both were like, we're not doing that.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Kev, Kev wasn't that rose to the occasion.
- 5:42Speaker 1: He did it.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Rose to the occasion.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Put me in, coach. Put me in. Long before that, we...
- 5:48Speaker 1: We watched you on all that, of course, and we
- 5:52Speaker 1: were massive fans of yours on that show. Oh, here
- 5:55Speaker 1: it goes. And then Good Burger, of course, was big
- 5:58Speaker 1: for us in the Jonas household. Oh, of course. To
- 6:01Speaker 1: see you then make that jump, you know, for all
- 6:03Speaker 1: your fans that grew up watching you and make the
- 6:05Speaker 1: jump to be on SNL, how many years ago was it?
- 6:08Speaker 3: 2003, I want to say. 2003, wow.
- 6:10Speaker 1: 23 years. That's so cool. Yeah, so to see that
- 6:14Speaker 1: and having that foundation of fans who grew up watching you,
- 6:18Speaker 1: It was really such an exciting moment. I think we
- 6:20Speaker 1: all felt a part of it, you know, because we
- 6:23Speaker 1: got to watch you and experience kind of your early projects. Now,
- 6:27Speaker 1: do you hear from fans a lot about all that
- 6:30Speaker 1: and Good Burger and all those projects?
- 6:31Speaker 2: Yeah, they say similar things. They say it's like, yo,
- 6:35Speaker 2: when you got on SNL, it's like we all got
- 6:37Speaker 2: on SNL.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:39Speaker 3: No, because like we just like all grew up together, basically. So.
- 6:43Speaker 2: And the work that we did, you know, is so
- 6:46Speaker 2: beloved because we were having such a good time that
- 6:48Speaker 2: it's like echoed through generations. So I just hear a
- 6:51Speaker 2: lot of people like, yo, I watched you as a kid.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Now I turn my kids on to it and they
- 6:55Speaker 2: love it and blah.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Blah, blah. So I don't know.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It's just, it's all a blessing for me that all
- 7:00Speaker 2: those memories are very, very positive. And we just had
- 7:04Speaker 2: such a good time and made like lifelong friends, you know?
- 7:07Speaker 2: And then the jump to SNL has just been, you know,
- 7:11Speaker 2: an incredible bridge between, you know, child and adult performers.
- 7:15Speaker 3: You know how that is? You know what I mean?
- 7:17Speaker 2: I know you guys, did you guys have like a
- 7:20Speaker 2: real like turning point where you're like, I don't want
- 7:22Speaker 2: to do, you know, a certain kind of younger sound anymore.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I want to do more of a mature sound. Was
- 7:28Speaker 3: there ever like a crossroads kind of moment?
- 7:30Speaker 1: Definitely. I think for all of us at separate points,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and I think in our careers, for Nick and I,
- 7:35Speaker 1: we did solo albums and that was when we were like, like, Oh,
- 7:38Speaker 1: I want to write, I want to write something that's
- 7:39Speaker 1: a bit more sexier or whatever you're going through early,
- 7:42Speaker 1: you know, your early twenties trying to figure out who
- 7:44Speaker 1: you are and that leap of faith and being like,
- 7:46Speaker 1: I'm going to change it up a lot musically. And
- 7:49Speaker 1: then I think bringing that as well as our fan
- 7:51Speaker 1: base has grown up with us. Like you said earlier, like, um,
- 7:54Speaker 1: for yourself, it's similar where, where we were watching our
- 7:57Speaker 1: audience is like, well, we can't, it's not, it's not
- 7:59Speaker 1: like cute first date stuff anymore. This is like relationship
- 8:02Speaker 1: kind of stuff you want to speak to and where
- 8:05Speaker 1: you're at in your life. Um, real quick, I'm just curious.
- 8:08Speaker 1: What was your audition like for SNL?
- 8:11Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I did impressions. I did my best versions of things.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I mean, I can mimic some people. I do a
- 8:20Speaker 2: decent Charles Barkley and a pretty good Sharpton and stuff
- 8:23Speaker 2: like that. So I tried Al Sharpton talking to Arnold
- 8:28Speaker 2: Schwarzenegger just because I feel like everybody can do a Schwarzenegger. But, yeah,
- 8:33Speaker 2: it was all over the place because I'm– I consider
- 8:37Speaker 2: myself an actor.
- 8:38Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 8:38Speaker 2: I'm not really a standup comic, but I had to
- 8:41Speaker 2: do standup comedies for like, you know, five minutes or whatever.
- 8:45Speaker 2: But it was very much like an actor's version of
- 8:49Speaker 2: doing standup. Like I didn't even address the audience that
- 8:52Speaker 2: was in front of me and stuff like that. It
- 8:53Speaker 2: was just a very different kind of thing. It was
- 8:55Speaker 2: more like a, you know, kind of kid playing in the.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Mirror kind of stuff. Sure.
- 8:59Speaker 2: And just, you know, doing sketches or whatever, like to myself, basically.
- 9:03Speaker 2: But yeah, Yeah, it was really, really scary.
- 9:07Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 9:08Speaker 2: Because it's such a make or break moment for your career.
- 9:12Speaker 2: It's just one of those things like, yeah, if you
- 9:15Speaker 2: don't get it, it's not necessarily the end of the road,
- 9:17Speaker 2: but it's something that lives with you for forever. So
- 9:20Speaker 2: I just wanted to be a positive version of that,
- 9:24Speaker 2: even if I only stayed a year or whatever.
- 9:26Speaker 3: So it was just a very stressful audition. It was
- 9:29Speaker 3: a stressful three weeks or something like that.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Do you feel like your early success helped or hurt
- 9:36Speaker 1: your chances of getting on the cast?
- 9:39Speaker 2: I think it helped because it just helped people's confidence
- 9:45Speaker 2: that I could do the job as long as I'm
- 9:47Speaker 2: not responsible for the job.
- 9:49Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 9:50Speaker 2: Because I've never really had to write necessarily. So I
- 9:55Speaker 2: didn't really understand that part of the responsibility of being
- 9:59Speaker 2: an SNL cast member. but you know, you learn on
- 10:00Speaker 2: the fly and there's a lot of, you know, other
- 10:02Speaker 2: writers there that you can collaborate, collaborate with.
- 10:05Speaker 3: And like, not everybody writes, you know what I mean?
- 10:07Speaker 2: Like some cast members are like myself, they're better off
- 10:11Speaker 2: kind of, you know, improvising and then people take notes
- 10:13Speaker 2: and then, you know, they go write the sketches and
- 10:16Speaker 2: I perform the sketches when it's table read time kind
- 10:18Speaker 2: of thing.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Um, I think it was an assist that I had
- 10:22Speaker 3: some experience.
- 10:25Speaker 1: So is it hard for you guys to transition? We
- 10:27Speaker 1: kind of have this when we come off a tour.
- 10:29Speaker 1: So when you guys are done with the full season,
- 10:31Speaker 1: do you guys do a come down afterwards? Is it
- 10:33Speaker 1: weirdly different for you from a schedule perspective? Because obviously
- 10:37Speaker 1: it's a grind doing the show every week.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like going from 200 miles an hour to seven.
- 10:45Speaker 4: It is.
- 10:45Speaker 1: It's jarring.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Luckily like my kids are still in school. So that
- 10:48Speaker 2: kind of pattern stays the same for like a third,
- 10:51Speaker 2: you know, few weeks or whatever. Um, but it, it,
- 10:55Speaker 2: it's definitely like, Oh snap. All of a sudden, like
- 10:57Speaker 2: I'm off work. And in my earlier years, that was
- 11:01Speaker 2: when you would like jump into a movie or something.
- 11:03Speaker 2: So you would just go from work to work.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Right.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Keep going.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Now I can kind of choose to relax the schedule
- 11:09Speaker 2: or something if I want to kind of thing.
- 11:11Speaker 3: So that's nice.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Well, season 52, as you mentioned before, kicks off, uh,
- 11:16Speaker 1: This Saturday. And you've got a pretty crazy lineup for
- 11:18Speaker 1: the first couple of hosts and musical guests. The first
- 11:21Speaker 1: episode being New York Knick champion Jalen Brunson, of course.
- 11:26Speaker 3: So awesome.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Let's go.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 11:29Speaker 1: What a crazy year for New York. And Cat's Eye,
- 11:31Speaker 1: who are having just a crazy moment as well.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Yeah. Shout out. Shout out to Cat's Eye. Shout out
- 11:37Speaker 3: to K-pop. All of it.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Do athletes generally make good hosts, do you think?
- 11:41Speaker 3: I guess percentage-wise, no.
- 11:43Speaker 2: But there are also those Those gyms, like the Jordan
- 11:47Speaker 2: show was great.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Manning's.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah, Peyton Manning was great. Andy Roddick even had a
- 11:54Speaker 2: good show. Like, you know, Buckley, of course.
- 11:58Speaker 1: The Manning brothers are always hilarious, too.
- 12:01Speaker 2: So, you know, as long as they come to play
- 12:04Speaker 2: and they don't come to, like, be cool. You know,
- 12:07Speaker 2: being cool is not helpful.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Also, the thing they tell you, I remember when I was,
- 12:11Speaker 1: you know, fortunate enough to get to host B-Musical Guests,
- 12:14Speaker 1: they really stress you on the monologue at the beginning
- 12:17Speaker 1: and just throughout the show to talk slower than you
- 12:19Speaker 1: think you need to talk because your heart starts racing.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Let me get through this. And you're just trying not
- 12:25Speaker 1: to flub a word, but also everything feels like it's
- 12:28Speaker 1: moving a lot faster than it actually is, and you
- 12:30Speaker 1: just have to settle into it.
- 12:32Speaker 3: That's exactly kind of how the audition felt. You know
- 12:35Speaker 3: what I mean? You want to just get through it
- 12:38Speaker 3: kind of thing. Yeah.
- 12:39Speaker 2: They're good at like helping people like calm down and
- 12:43Speaker 2: do it right for your own benefit sake.
- 12:45Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Once you feel that first laugh,
- 12:49Speaker 3: it's like, oh, this is working. You know what I mean?
- 12:51Speaker 3: And I can just like relax and like read it.
- 12:53Speaker 1: One of my favorite sketches from that episode was the
- 12:57Speaker 1: one we did. with Aidy Bryant where she was the mouse. Um,
- 13:02Speaker 1: and she, she basically Cinderella, but she was a mouse
- 13:04Speaker 1: and she lost her shoe. I remember doing the rehearsal
- 13:08Speaker 1: and both of us were like, this is either going
- 13:09Speaker 1: to work and be really funny or just bomb. Sometimes
- 13:13Speaker 1: my favorite things are watching, especially you when something just
- 13:18Speaker 1: doesn't work, but you guys internally are just like, from,
- 13:21Speaker 1: from my perspective, you guys are loving it. Cause you're like, well,
- 13:24Speaker 1: we tried, we tried, we're here. We got to finish
- 13:26Speaker 1: the sketch. We can't stop now.
- 13:28Speaker 2: It's my favorite thing in the world only because it's like,
- 13:33Speaker 2: what else are you going to do?
- 13:34Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
- 13:35Speaker 1: It doesn't get any better if this is as good
- 13:37Speaker 1: as it's going to go.
- 13:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:38Speaker 3: We are out here.
- 13:39Speaker 2: So like when it's, when things bomb or like we
- 13:43Speaker 2: tell a joke and we're expecting a laugh and you
- 13:45Speaker 2: get silence, it's hilarious.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Like that is hilarious.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Like, yes, it's embarrassing of course, but like, how could
- 13:54Speaker 2: we be so on different pages with, our expectation in
- 13:58Speaker 2: the audience.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Has there ever been a sketch that worked in the
- 14:02Speaker 1: dress and then just bombed in the real show?
- 14:05Speaker 2: Yeah, that weirdly happens a lot. Like, you know, just
- 14:08Speaker 2: different audiences have, you know, different mindsets or different placements
- 14:12Speaker 2: in the show creates different momentums.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Or, you know, just.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Oh, that's interesting.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Like weird, like weird factors that are kind of out
- 14:20Speaker 2: of your control. So I try to like, you know,
- 14:23Speaker 2: pass the message along, like, don't try to get overly
- 14:26Speaker 2: attached to the outcome of this. Just enjoy whatever's happening
- 14:30Speaker 2: in the moment. And like, that's kind of the beauty
- 14:33Speaker 2: of a live show.
- 14:35Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 14:35Speaker 2: Like you can embrace the accident, you know what I'm saying?
- 14:39Speaker 2: So like, it's, it's a good time if you can
- 14:42Speaker 2: get out of your head and get out.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Of your panic.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Speaking of advice, I'm sure you get approached by a
- 14:48Speaker 1: lot of different actors, comedians, people that are trying out
- 14:52Speaker 1: probably going for that audition that's terrifying that they dream
- 14:55Speaker 1: of or hope to achieve an opportunity like that what's
- 14:58Speaker 1: the advice you'd give to somebody that's the comic that's
- 15:01Speaker 1: literally listening today yeah.
- 15:03Speaker 2: I mean Michael Jackson said it best he's like if
- 15:05Speaker 2: you're prepared you have no reason to be nervous another
- 15:08Speaker 2: phrase of a lot easier said than done kind of
- 15:11Speaker 2: thing because we're talking about perfectionist kind of people so
- 15:16Speaker 2: You know, not everybody is rehearsing as much, especially comedy or,
- 15:19Speaker 2: you know, improv comedy or sketch comedy.
- 15:21Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 15:22Speaker 2: Like, unless you're a groundling or part of the Upright
- 15:26Speaker 2: Citizens Brigade or, you know, Second City or something like that,
- 15:30Speaker 2: you're probably not getting those reps that are similar to
- 15:34Speaker 2: what it's like to do the show. So you're probably
- 15:38Speaker 2: going to be nervous. And I would just say embrace
- 15:41Speaker 2: those nerves and maybe turn it into energy. But also
- 15:44Speaker 2: try to make sure that you do have a blueprint
- 15:47Speaker 2: for where your laughs are supposed to be. And then
- 15:50Speaker 2: if they don't come in those moments, those are opportunities
- 15:53Speaker 2: to kind of point that out, which will lead to
- 15:56Speaker 2: new unexpected laughs.
- 15:57Speaker 1: That's great advice. It's awesome.
- 15:59Speaker 3: This is the adult world.
- 16:00Speaker 2: You know, we're not in elementary school where people can
- 16:04Speaker 2: wake you up and get you to school.
- 16:05Speaker 3: You got to go yourself kind of thing. So that's
- 16:07Speaker 3: how it is.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Get to work.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Where you guys are at, like you're in your what?
- 16:13Speaker 3: late twenties, thirties.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Thank you for that. That was great. Mid thirties.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Just about damn near 40.
- 16:22Speaker 2: It's on you to kind of like get the train
- 16:25Speaker 2: rolling whenever you feel like it's time to like do
- 16:28Speaker 2: another thing kind of thing to like Joe bro brand going,
- 16:33Speaker 2: it's kind of like in your laps. So like, how
- 16:35Speaker 2: do you guys kind of navigate when it feels good
- 16:39Speaker 2: to kind of do something or.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I think it's, yeah, it's exactly that. When it feels good,
- 16:42Speaker 1: you keep going. I mean, I think we were laughing
- 16:46Speaker 1: because sometimes it feels like when we're announcing a tour,
- 16:49Speaker 1: they're like online, they're like, these guys are on tour.
- 16:53Speaker 1: They owe somebody something. And for us, we're like, or we,
- 16:58Speaker 1: when it's good, you keep going. Turns out we like
- 17:02Speaker 1: to do this. Yeah. The concern is when people are
- 17:06Speaker 1: not showing up, that's when you're like, damn, okay, well,
- 17:08Speaker 1: maybe we should take a break. But I think we, A,
- 17:12Speaker 1: more than anything, and I'm sure you would probably say
- 17:14Speaker 1: the same thing, when you love something, you're so excited
- 17:18Speaker 1: to show up to work and how grateful and lucky
- 17:20Speaker 1: are we that we get to do what we love
- 17:21Speaker 1: for a living. There's a lot of people out there
- 17:23Speaker 1: doing something to hopefully have that opportunity to step out
- 17:26Speaker 1: and do something else. But, you know, and then also like, yeah,
- 17:29Speaker 1: there's an amazing feeling as being a performer and a
- 17:31Speaker 1: creative where you can go cook something up and then
- 17:34Speaker 1: put it out there and people are receptive or you
- 17:37Speaker 1: see how it affects them in a positive way or,
- 17:39Speaker 1: even just makes them laugh or makes them smile. You're like,
- 17:41Speaker 1: all right, that's what, that's what I'm here for.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:44Speaker 1: And of course, all the money.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Of course, the moolah. We love it. Feed me.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Hold on. I got a good one for that. Oh
- 17:56Speaker 1: my God. That's my favorite character ever.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Where's my tub? Yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Where's your tub?
- 18:02Speaker 2: I guess my bigger question is, is it stressful at
- 18:05Speaker 2: all to like, do you feel like the burden?
- 18:07Speaker 3: Cause like, Harry says he worries when he's not on
- 18:10Speaker 3: tour kind of thing.
- 18:11Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Like, am I doing enough
- 18:15Speaker 2: or am I going to survive or whatever?
- 18:17Speaker 1: I think we, you know, luckily there's a lot of
- 18:19Speaker 1: other stuff that we do, you know, outside of music,
- 18:22Speaker 1: but you know, really to that point, I think as
- 18:26Speaker 1: the older we get, the goal is like a quiet
- 18:29Speaker 1: morning with our kids and being able to work hard
- 18:32Speaker 1: so we can just, chill. And that morning could probably
- 18:35Speaker 1: be a week or a month or whatever it is.
- 18:36Speaker 1: But you don't have that feeling where we're like, okay,
- 18:40Speaker 1: that's the goal. I want to be able to enjoy
- 18:41Speaker 1: that holiday and vacation. I want to know that I
- 18:43Speaker 1: have around Christmas off, whatever it is. And you protect
- 18:48Speaker 1: those moments with our, even though we're family, it's like we,
- 18:51Speaker 1: the family stuff together. Like we got to go do
- 18:53Speaker 1: that outside of the workplace to remind ourselves like, all right,
- 18:56Speaker 1: we're human beings too. We got to have that time.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Shout out to your fans, man. Cause they've been with
- 19:01Speaker 3: you for what, When was your first album?
- 19:05Speaker 1: Oh, six. Oh, six.
- 19:07Speaker 3: Yeah. A full dub. Congratulations. Thank you. Happy anniversary. That's amazing.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 19:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:15Speaker 1: It's been, it's been incredible. You know, we have seen
- 19:18Speaker 1: so many phases and so many versions of ourselves as
- 19:21Speaker 1: we've grown through it too, which is so cool. And
- 19:23Speaker 1: I think probably for the same for you, like, was
- 19:25Speaker 1: it really, was it challenging going from, you know, Nickelodeon
- 19:29Speaker 1: to SNL? Like obviously you had time in between, but like,
- 19:31Speaker 1: was it, Was there things that you brought from that
- 19:34Speaker 1: moment to SNL as well that you felt like you
- 19:36Speaker 1: had to like kind of let go of while you
- 19:38Speaker 1: were doing the process of becoming someone new?
- 19:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it does feel a little bit like two different
- 19:43Speaker 2: lives a little bit.
- 19:44Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 19:45Speaker 2: Like my childhood existence was kind of. filled with normalcy.
- 19:51Speaker 2: And then, you know, later into like turning into 15
- 19:55Speaker 2: and 16, you're kind of turning into an adult.
- 19:58Speaker 3: And that's when I started like really working, working.
- 20:00Speaker 2: So like, that's kind of when everything seemed to be
- 20:03Speaker 2: like a different version of life kind of thing, because
- 20:06Speaker 2: all of a sudden it was like going from just
- 20:10Speaker 2: a kid in the South side of Atlanta and like
- 20:13Speaker 2: a very, you know, kind of tight knit community to
- 20:16Speaker 2: like the world basically, you know what I'm saying?
- 20:19Speaker 3: And it's like, all of a sudden, like I'm making money.
- 20:23Speaker 2: You know, and I get to like have all these
- 20:28Speaker 2: apartments and rental cars and like just showing up to
- 20:30Speaker 2: all these different experiences and like meeting famous and it just,
- 20:34Speaker 2: just seems like two different lives, you know, like one
- 20:36Speaker 2: life just surrounded by famous people and people that I've
- 20:40Speaker 2: seen on my television all my life and never thought
- 20:42Speaker 2: that I would ever get close to. And then the
- 20:45Speaker 2: other life is like, yeah, just a little kid, you know,
- 20:50Speaker 2: a little brother, someone's, you know, baby child kind of thing.
- 20:53Speaker 3: So what did I bring along from the Nickelodeon days?
- 20:58Speaker 2: Just professionalism, you know, like showing up on time, and
- 21:02Speaker 2: that kind of stuff and like kind of knowing what
- 21:04Speaker 2: I'm supposed to be doing once it's set stone or whatever.
- 21:09Speaker 3: But I think my.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Main thing that I enjoyed, like that I've always had
- 21:13Speaker 2: is kind of like, you know, a bold naivete basically
- 21:17Speaker 2: about how good I either am or am not.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Like it kind of never really mattered to me for
- 21:23Speaker 3: some reason.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Like I just always kind of felt like, I was
- 21:28Speaker 2: going and going to be where I was supposed to be.
- 21:30Speaker 2: So if I was supposed to be a Mighty Duck
- 21:32Speaker 2: or I was supposed to be in heavyweights or I
- 21:34Speaker 2: was supposed to be in all that and Kenan and Kel,
- 21:37Speaker 2: it just felt like, it all felt like it was
- 21:40Speaker 2: supposed to be. Like, SNL was like the one kind
- 21:44Speaker 2: of like holy, you know, S-H-I-T kind of.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Moment.
- 21:50Speaker 1: We just watched a mighty ducks. I went through the
- 21:53Speaker 1: whole trilogy with my, my daughters recently and they, it's
- 21:56Speaker 1: like they, they hold up. So like, it's insane how
- 21:59Speaker 1: good those movies are. So they're unbelievable. Mighty ducks.
- 22:02Speaker 3: All right.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Let's talk sports. Favorite sports team. Like it doesn't matter
- 22:07Speaker 1: which sport.
- 22:08Speaker 3: Across the board. I'm from Atlanta. So we are Falcons, Braves, Hawks.
- 22:12Speaker 2: And then as that, yeah, I have my, you know,
- 22:15Speaker 2: affinities towards like all the other teams, but I'm a,
- 22:18Speaker 2: Football fan first and then basketball and then baseball and
- 22:22Speaker 2: then hockey.
- 22:22Speaker 3: I guess.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Okay.
- 22:23Speaker 1: And then famously in Good Burger, of course. So best
- 22:28Speaker 1: burger you've had in New York City.
- 22:30Speaker 3: There's a few. Five Guys is pretty strong as far
- 22:33Speaker 3: as like franchises.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Yeah, it is. It holds up. They deliver.
- 22:37Speaker 3: But there's a place called J.G.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Mellon's that's on the Upper East Side.
- 22:41Speaker 1: And they opened for like a week in the West
- 22:44Speaker 1: Village and then it didn't work out. But down by.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:47Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Yeah. That was a good spot. Cause that was for
- 22:51Speaker 3: us downtown.
- 22:51Speaker 2: I know.
- 22:52Speaker 1: But yeah, I guess if you're doing SNL and you
- 22:54Speaker 1: want to take a little, and they're open late, they're
- 22:56Speaker 1: open pretty late, like two, three in the morning sometimes.
- 22:58Speaker 3: It was like the first place someone showed me that
- 23:01Speaker 3: was like, you need to.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Know this place. It's, it's yeah. And you have to,
- 23:04Speaker 1: if you're visiting New York, you got to drive up
- 23:06Speaker 1: there and experience it. It's nothing fancy. It hits different. Keenan,
- 23:10Speaker 1: we've got some voicemails from some of our listeners asking
- 23:14Speaker 1: us for advice on things that we have no business
- 23:17Speaker 1: giving advice on. If you join us, we'll be thrilled
- 23:19Speaker 1: to have you. But they keep calling and keep asking advice.
- 23:21Speaker 3: They do.
- 23:22Speaker 1: We love your assistance in this.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Let's put our heads together, man.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Let's hear it. Let's hear it.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Hey, brothers.
- 23:27Speaker 4: This is Darlene from San Diego. Our friends and I
- 23:30Speaker 4: are doing a fantasy football draft, fantasy football league, if
- 23:35Speaker 4: you will.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Nice.
- 23:36Speaker 4: And we can only draft based on looks and headshots
- 23:40Speaker 4: of the players. So no football knowledge must be or
- 23:44Speaker 4: is accepted.
- 23:45Speaker 1: I love this.
- 23:46Speaker 4: So which and who would be your first three picks
- 23:49Speaker 4: for a quarterback, running back, and a tight end solely
- 23:53Speaker 4: based on looks and headshots? Nothing else. Curious to know
- 23:58Speaker 4: you guys' picks. And so you guys can also help
- 24:00Speaker 4: me with my draft. Actually, named my team Bing Bing Bong.
- 24:05Speaker 4: So that's all. Looking forward to hearing from you guys.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Bye.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Is the tight end part of the draft, the headshot,
- 24:10Speaker 1: just the actual tight end? Just like the picture with
- 24:13Speaker 1: their eyes?
- 24:14Speaker 3: Wow.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Kevin Winkler. Tight end. Tight end. We're just sitting on
- 24:20Speaker 1: that joke. I like it. All right. Who's our QB?
- 24:24Speaker 1: Who are we assisting? Jackson Dart. Yeah, but I don't know.
- 24:28Speaker 1: There's another handsome. Yeah, there's a bunch of handsome guys.
- 24:32Speaker 2: To that, like, in case you don't really have a
- 24:36Speaker 2: list of names, it'd be just look at the necks.
- 24:39Speaker 3: If the necks look thick and sturdy, go with that.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Just all neck. That's great, buddy. Thank you.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Look for the neck. Add your team. That's a good
- 24:51Speaker 1: advice right there.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Jackson's ginormous neck. You know?
- 24:56Speaker 1: He's got to play well. And you know what that means.
- 24:59Speaker 3: Great player. All right.
- 25:02Speaker 1: So that's our advice. We're saying look at the neck.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Look at the necks. Just focus on the necks. I
- 25:06Speaker 1: like that. That says a lot about them. Yeah. Necks, traps. Okay.
- 25:10Speaker 1: All of our guests, we asked them to pull a
- 25:12Speaker 1: question from our bowl of questions here. Since you're on Zoom,
- 25:15Speaker 1: I'm going to pull one for you and we'll read
- 25:17Speaker 1: it out. It has nothing to do with your life
- 25:18Speaker 1: or career. It's just a fun question. Random stuff. Have
- 25:23Speaker 1: you ever seen a ghost? If not, would you like to?
- 25:25Speaker 3: I feel like I've seen versions of apparitions.
- 25:29Speaker 2: And no, I say it a lot when I used
- 25:31Speaker 2: to be sort of like a latchkey 80s kids because
- 25:34Speaker 2: my mom was an overnight nurse and I used to
- 25:37Speaker 2: spend a lot of nights kind of at home by
- 25:40Speaker 2: myself later in high school. I would always say before
- 25:44Speaker 2: I cut the lights off to go to bed, I
- 25:45Speaker 2: don't want to see any ghosts.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Which I feel like is inviting them to come around,
- 25:52Speaker 1: to be honest.
- 25:54Speaker 3: It's a double-edged sword. I feel you.
- 25:58Speaker 1: He's got a point. We respect it.
- 26:00Speaker 3: I've seen shadows and stuff.
- 26:04Speaker 2: I haven't seen an actual ghost from the movie Ghostbusters
- 26:08Speaker 2: where I can recognize someone.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Thank God.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Have you guys ever seen one, Joe, Nick? Yes. Oh yeah.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Really?
- 26:14Speaker 1: I rented a house in LA and me and my
- 26:19Speaker 1: two roommates, we all had different experiences. Like my experience,
- 26:22Speaker 1: I was asleep. It was our buddy's birthday. That following day,
- 26:26Speaker 1: I had to work the next morning. So I went
- 26:27Speaker 1: to bed responsibly and I hear the door open, the
- 26:31Speaker 1: alarm go off. I hear the like, turn off the alarm.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Like there's laughter in the kitchen. Something falls over and breaks.
- 26:37Speaker 1: And then I hear footsteps down to their room and
- 26:39Speaker 1: like it stops. It was really quick. And I was like,
- 26:41Speaker 1: Should I go up? I'm awake. It's midnight. It's 1230.
- 26:43Speaker 1: I'm like, should I go in there and say happy birthday?
- 26:46Speaker 1: And I was all the way to the morning. So
- 26:47Speaker 1: like 8am I'm like, I don't care. Is he sleeping?
- 26:49Speaker 1: I'm just going to go kick the door down and say,
- 26:50Speaker 1: happy birthday. And the bed's made. I'm like, that's strange.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Maybe it was the other roommate. So I'm like kind
- 26:55Speaker 1: of freaked out now. I'm like, that's weird. So I
- 26:56Speaker 1: go to the, and I was like politely knocked to
- 26:59Speaker 1: our other roommate and I opened the door and the
- 27:00Speaker 1: bed's made too. And I'm like, what the, I'm like,
- 27:03Speaker 1: I heard, I definitely heard somebody. And so I go
- 27:05Speaker 1: in the kitchen. So sure enough, there was something that
- 27:07Speaker 1: like a glass that was knocked over that broke. So
- 27:10Speaker 1: it's just like weird stuff. And I called him like,
- 27:12Speaker 1: this is kind of crazy. And then our roommate had,
- 27:15Speaker 1: we all had different experiences in the house and would
- 27:18Speaker 1: see things occasionally and like just spooky stuff. So, and
- 27:22Speaker 1: we shot a music video in the, was it Queen?
- 27:25Speaker 1: What's the boat off of LA? Oh, the Queen Mary.
- 27:28Speaker 3: Queen Mary.
- 27:28Speaker 1: And it's a haunted boat. And we shot a music
- 27:31Speaker 1: video for SOS, our song there. And we stayed the night.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Like we had the option of staying the night because
- 27:35Speaker 1: we had an early morning. They're like, you guys should
- 27:36Speaker 1: stay on the boat because it's a working hotel as well.
- 27:38Speaker 1: But it's like a haunted hotel.
- 27:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Terrible idea. Whoever said, I remember seeing like this
- 27:44Speaker 1: lady walking down the hallway when they, and I, and
- 27:48Speaker 1: she was terrifying. Like it was, she was very tall,
- 27:53Speaker 1: pale and wearing this black dress. It was walking past me.
- 27:57Speaker 1: And then I asked somebody, I was like, is anyone
- 27:58Speaker 1: else staying there? Like, no, no, we rented the place
- 28:00Speaker 1: out for you guys. And I was like, well, I
- 28:01Speaker 1: just saw somebody walk by me and that person, that person.
- 28:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Stuff like that. And they're like, sir, you're not allowed
- 28:06Speaker 1: to smoke weed on this boat.
- 28:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:09Speaker 2: This is California I couldn't even handle it like I
- 28:13Speaker 2: wouldn't know what to do like those people that see
- 28:16Speaker 2: apparitions and they like hair goes white or they just
- 28:19Speaker 2: like freeze.
- 28:20Speaker 3: And like they melt and have heart attacks that's me.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Yeah I'm good on that yeah no thanks Keenan thank
- 28:26Speaker 1: you so much for coming on today thank you so
- 28:29Speaker 1: much exciting season of SL it's always good to see
- 28:31Speaker 1: you my pleasure it's good to see you guys see
- 28:34Speaker 1: you my friend see you in New York see you
- 28:36Speaker 1: in New York Best of luck.
- 28:37Speaker 3: Let's go to a game or something. I'm with you.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Yeah, let's do it.
- 28:40Speaker 3: Let's go. All right. All right. Peace.
