- 0:00In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
- 0:03the land participating in the hobby.
- 0:06There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards, and
- 0:11while distance may separate them, here is where they come
- 0:14together to talk cards. Hey everybody, it is Mike, Junk
- 0:21Wax Hero, joined by Greg from Midlife Cards.
- 0:24Greg, how are you today? I'm doing well.
- 0:27We're recording this on a Thursday which means I have one
- 0:31day left until the weekend. Lucy has a game so I'm going to
- 0:35take 1/2 day sub to go to the game and so I have 1/2 day until
- 0:41the weekend. We've had a lot of colds going
- 0:45on here in Maine, a lot of people coming down with colds,
- 0:48flu, California, Sacramento area and not so much.
- 0:53No, I've, I've, I'm, I would say I'm at this point 90% of the way
- 0:58through my cold, which started 15 days ago.
- 1:03It's a lingering nasal chest thing that started as a scratchy
- 1:10throat and has worked its way through.
- 1:12And I'm sure it's COVID of COVID variant of some sort.
- 1:18But I mean, I feel OK, but it's, it's a little annoying, but
- 1:22it's, it's, you know, we're fine.
- 1:24I, I, we're going to talk about cards here in a minute, but I,
- 1:28I, I got COVID 3 1/2 years ago and other than that, I have had
- 1:32zero sign of any sort of illness in seven years.
- 1:36No, no stuffy nose, no, no sneezing, nothing in seven
- 1:41years. I think that your immune system
- 1:45broke the cult the the code. I mean, your immune system said
- 1:50I've I've accomplished everything I need to accomplish
- 1:53now. Yeah, I just think that.
- 1:57You're definitely getting sick in the next week.
- 1:59I mean, there's a no hitter and the, the the pitcher's at the
- 2:03end of the dugout by himself right now and somebody's the bat
- 2:07boy just said, hey, you haven't you haven't given up a hit yet.
- 2:11We're in the 8th inning, buddy. Yeah, great comparison.
- 2:15So last week we had a really fun podcast and you talked about a
- 2:19having been scammed on eBay on a sports card purchase.
- 2:23You have an update on that, right?
- 2:25I have an update so if you missed it last week, shame on
- 2:31you. But Long story short, what
- 2:34happened was I bought something on eBay.
- 2:36It never showed up. I kept forgetting about it.
- 2:40I opened a case before I knew it, it had been two months.
- 2:45I reached out and eBay said, sorry, it's been too long ago,
- 2:49It's been more than 30 days. And I'm like, well, isn't that
- 2:52the point? And and that's where we left
- 2:55off. So I was pretty fired up.
- 2:58And again, the thing that started stirring the drink, the
- 3:01straw was, Mike, your video about the scam that blew up,
- 3:08your video that blew up about a scam that was happening.
- 3:11And I'm like, I'm not going to get scammed.
- 3:13And in the video you said, you know, it's probably not worth
- 3:17your time, Greg. It's a $21.00 purchase of a
- 3:20Bernie Williams card. And I was not willing to accept
- 3:26defeat. So here's what happened.
- 3:29So it literally we finished recording last week and I
- 3:32immediately went in to eBay and I got the number and I put in my
- 3:38stuff and they called me and the lady said, you know what, what
- 3:45happened? I told her story and she goes,
- 3:49let me check with the supervisor, I'll be right back.
- 3:53OK, well, they're going to fix this.
- 3:56She comes back and she says, well, Sir, it's been more than
- 4:0030 days. So the eBay guarantee, the eBay
- 4:04money back guarantee is no longer valid.
- 4:07So. And I said, wait a second, Let
- 4:11me just stop you right there. I said when you picked up the
- 4:14phone, you said, hello, Mr. Miller, thank you for being a
- 4:19customer for the past 18 years. And now what you're telling me
- 4:24is you're not going to refund me $21.00 because I got scammed
- 4:29more than 30 days ago? And she goes, well.
- 4:33And I said, what you're telling me is that eBay isn't going to
- 4:38help me. She goes, no, that's not what I
- 4:42said. And I said, whoa, whoa, wait,
- 4:44wait, so eBay is going to help me.
- 4:46She goes, well, Sir, it's been more than 30 days.
- 4:49I said, so eBay is not going to help me.
- 4:52And she said, well, no, Sir. And I said, is eBay going to
- 4:56help me or eBay not going to help me?
- 4:59Because it doesn't sound like eBay is going to help me.
- 5:01And she goes, well, we can't refund the money, I guess.
- 5:03So you're not going to help me. She said you'll need to call
- 5:08your bank. Your bank can help you.
- 5:11So I go, oh, so the platform of eBay is not going to help me and
- 5:17you want my bank to bail you out?
- 5:22And she said, well, you need to call your, your financial
- 5:27institution. So I said, is there going to be
- 5:31a survey at the end of this call?
- 5:33I'm really hoping there's going to be a Sir because I was
- 5:37turning the screws. And she said, I don't know, Sir.
- 5:41And then she hung up and I'm like, whoa, you hung up on me.
- 5:45I'm the one that's out the 21 bucks, so I refuse to be denied.
- 5:50So I immediately called up my bank and they asked me for the
- 5:54details of the situation. They said, OK, we're going to
- 5:57open a case. We're going to, you know, have
- 6:00somebody look into it. And 24 hours later I got an
- 6:04e-mail and it said we've looked into the details of your case
- 6:09and we have refunded you your $21.
- 6:11Wow. So eBay, thanks for nothing,
- 6:15banking institution hearts and unicorns and rainbows and hugs
- 6:23and butterflies for you. That's legitimately shocking
- 6:27that they chose to tell you they they can't do anything about it
- 6:31and that they're OK with people being scammed on their platform
- 6:35as long as it was more than 30 days ago.
- 6:37Right. I I mean, how long am I supposed
- 6:40to? What's the window where I'm
- 6:43supposed to go? OK, it's been long enough that I
- 6:45can open a case, but it hasn't been long enough that I don't
- 6:50have a case cuz it's been too long.
- 6:52Like what is it should say in there?
- 6:54From day 15 to 28 is when you can do something.
- 6:59I mean, it's it's wild. It's like the whole point of
- 7:02eBay is to be a safe place to conduct commerce with some
- 7:08stranger. And then the stranger doesn't
- 7:11even doesn't send the thing. But because I didn't file a
- 7:14complaint in 30 days, I don't get anything.
- 7:18Yeah. And that phone call cost them
- 7:20more than $21.00 just in in labor and technology cost more
- 7:25than $21.00. And they could have ended that
- 7:28phone call with a happy customer that would have cost them $40.
- 7:34But instead they chose to have it cost let's say $20.
- 7:36I'm making up the numbers but so they chose to have it only cost
- 7:40$20 and an unhappy customer which is seems like bad business
- 7:44to me. You know what I should have
- 7:46done? I should have said, you know,
- 7:48ma'am, I have a podcast and do. You know who I am.
- 7:53I'm midlife, Greg. I'm going to get my pound of
- 7:58flesh. So yeah, I mean it.
- 8:02It's one of those things where I guess my take away is I learned,
- 8:07I learned their policy, which I had no idea that that would be a
- 8:11policy. And one of the reasons I wanted
- 8:13to bring it up, to be honest with you, is because I, I think
- 8:17it's important other people are aware of that policy.
- 8:19You know, I think that it's important.
- 8:21I, I, I never would have guessed that.
- 8:23So now if you ever have an issue where the card hasn't shown up
- 8:27and it's been 20 days, you need to go open a case ASAP.
- 8:33And then if it shows up the next day then close the case.
- 8:37Yeah, if you ever get pulled over by a police officer, you
- 8:41should say, do you know who I am?
- 8:43I'm a sports card. YouTube.
- 8:44How dare. You exactly.
- 8:46I'll say I'm friends with Junk Wax Hero and.
- 8:50They will say, whoa, OK. I'm still waiting to meet
- 8:56someone in real life that recognizes me.
- 9:02That hasn't happened where I'm like, you know, at the mall or
- 9:05something. Not that I'd ever go to a mall,
- 9:07but you know what I mean. I did have somebody who knew
- 9:10somebody. So there was person who views my
- 9:14different some of my episodes. And he realized cause of a
- 9:19sweatshirt I had on that. I worked at the high school that
- 9:22I work at and he had a friend who works at the high school.
- 9:25So my friend at the high school said do you have a YouTube
- 9:28channel, 'cause my friend wants to meet you.
- 9:31I was like, yeah. So that was the only kind of
- 9:34indirect. This is why I always take off
- 9:37any of my employer gear before I do a video.
- 9:40Yeah, that's smart. But I have never met anybody
- 9:44outside of a card show or card shop that watched my video.
- 9:48If you when I was at the National, I went with Tony to
- 9:51Wrigley Field and somebody recognized both of us.
- 9:54You don't really count that 'cause you're still kind of at
- 9:57the National. He yeah, that was really cool.
- 10:00And he had been watching my video that morning, which was
- 10:03funny. But I have had people from past
- 10:07portions of my life who have been searching YouTube for
- 10:11sports card content and discovered my channel and said
- 10:13hey, I know this guy and then reached out to me or commented
- 10:17about it. That's pretty cool.
- 10:19It is very cool. Yeah, so scam deal.
- 10:25I guess it's over. So I I don't know, I'll find
- 10:28something else to complain about.
- 10:31How about we complain about modern sports cards?
- 10:35Yeah, You know, I, I, it's weird that, you know, a lot of us put
- 10:42ourselves in these boxes of I'm a this type of self identifying
- 10:47box. If I'm in this, you know, type
- 10:50of collector and I hang out with other people who are this type
- 10:53of collector. But in reality, I think when we
- 10:56look at the Venn diagram of collecting, there's so much
- 11:01overlap and there's very little actually that's not overlap.
- 11:07And so some of the channels I enjoy the most are modern guys.
- 11:12I love stacking slabs. I love listening to Hoge and the
- 11:17Hoge cast and the crossover. And there, I mean, I'm just
- 11:22mentioning a couple. I love King of Cards.
- 11:25There's a there's a lot of people that are modern cards and
- 11:28so and I'm just have a blast listening even though it's not
- 11:33really what I collect. And So what, what I have been
- 11:38doing literally over the last last night I was, I was should
- 11:44have been asleep, but I kept searching and I'm a big 49er fan
- 11:49and like one of my favorite 49ers ever is Patrick Willis.
- 11:54So I'm looking at what man, I want to get a really cool
- 11:56Patrick Willis card. Maybe I should get a few.
- 11:59Nobody likes defensive player cards, so they're probably cheap
- 12:03so I can get one of my favorite guys, some cool cards.
- 12:06So I start looking at his rookie year.
- 12:08I'm like, OK, 2007 Patrick Willis.
- 12:12Maybe I'll throw in auto on there because that would be
- 12:15cool. And I start looking and I'm
- 12:17like, I don't know which of these are good.
- 12:21Like which of these? What's the good one?
- 12:24And are we talking about Panini in 2007?
- 12:27No. Well, there was some National
- 12:29Treasure stuff in there and then there was some Tops Chrome and
- 12:34there were some Bowman Chrome. So I think the license must have
- 12:37been with tops at that point. And and I'm like, I don't know,
- 12:45I don't know what I'm looking at.
- 12:46And then it's like, you know, a lot of people would would say
- 12:49we'll get the car. Do you think looks cool?
- 12:52It's a great point. Like, yeah, I should get the
- 12:54card that I look at it and I go, that's cool.
- 12:57But I also don't want to get a card that's not I, I want to get
- 13:02a card that's special for that era, you know, not just a card
- 13:06that looks cool in that era, because there are a lot of cards
- 13:09that maybe look cool, but they're not like they're not
- 13:13part of the story of car football cards from that era.
- 13:17I, I wanted to be. And that's one of the things
- 13:20Hoge talks about all the time is like, well, they're one of ones.
- 13:24And then they're out of fives and 10's and well, this was the
- 13:28first year that they did patches or this was the first year they
- 13:33had refractor autos. And and then there's like a
- 13:36whole science to it. And I'm like, all I know is
- 13:38there's a bunch of cards that have Patrick Willison.
- 13:41Some of them have good autos, some of them have bad ones.
- 13:44Some of them have patches. Some of them he's in a Misses
- 13:47Ole Miss uniform. Some of them he's in a, you
- 13:50know, and a niner uniform. Some there's no logo.
- 13:53And I'm like, I don't know what I'm looking at.
- 13:56And I want I want to know. And everyone says vintage is way
- 14:00more complicated than modern, and I get that.
- 14:04But I don't know what I'm looking at and I don't know how
- 14:07to figure out what I'm looking at do.
- 14:10You want me to simplify it as best as I can for you right now?
- 14:13Yes. So I have the same problem.
- 14:18I love Modern, by the way. So when I said let's complain
- 14:20about Modern, I'm not really going to complain about Modern
- 14:22because you can ignore all the noise with Modern and there's a
- 14:27lot of noise and still love Modern cards 'cause I have a ton
- 14:31of modern cars on my wall right now and I stick with the very
- 14:37basics. I want rookie tops Chrome
- 14:41refractor autograph. That's my ideal item if I can
- 14:46afford it. If I can't afford it then I want
- 14:50a rookie tops Chrome refractor without the autograph.
- 14:55Just the base refractor. You can also go to like a gold
- 15:01refractor or something like that.
- 15:02Stay. Wait there.
- 15:03There's like 100 different parallels now in 2025.
- 15:07Stick with the basics. Black refractor, gold refractor,
- 15:10things like that. I usually just stay with the
- 15:13very base refractor. Now if you're talking about
- 15:16basketball, football with Panini before they taken over by Tops
- 15:20shortly. I go with the rookie Panini
- 15:24silver prism. I don't do autographs with
- 15:27basketball because they're outrageously expensive and
- 15:32largely they are sticker autographs.
- 15:35You kind of course get on card autographs, but I just go with
- 15:39the Panini Silver Prism rookie card for basketball.
- 15:43I don't collect football. I also like Bowman Chrome
- 15:48refractor rookies or not rookies, but first Bowman for
- 15:53baseball. For baseball, I ignore every
- 15:55other set and I ignore every other parallel.
- 16:00So that's good advice. So let me counter with this.
- 16:04So when I'm looking at Pat Patrick Willis cards, for
- 16:07example, and, and I'll talk about baseball cards too, 'cause
- 16:09I had I've had a similar path with some, some baseball stuff.
- 16:15So the tops Chrome refractor autos of Patrick Willis are
- 16:23affordable, but they're all sticker autos and I'm not a big
- 16:28sticker auto guy. So I'm like, OK, I don't want
- 16:31the sticker auto, but I want some important Patrick Willis
- 16:37cards. So, so if they're all those are
- 16:41stickers and I'm not really feeling the sticker auto, then
- 16:45what do I, what did I, what do I go after?
- 16:48So then I was like, OK, let's again, like what you're saying,
- 16:51I want to simplify it. So I think the gold refractor is
- 16:56the best looking refractor. I think it will always be cool,
- 17:00always be valued. So I'm like, maybe I just 'cause
- 17:04I, I want a modern project is what I want.
- 17:07And I was like, maybe I'll just start doing Patrick Willis
- 17:10stuff. And then I was like, well, I I
- 17:14like Mariano Rivera and he's a relief pitcher, so stuff's not
- 17:18going to be crazy expensive, even though he's like one of the
- 17:21best ever. So I was like, maybe what I'll
- 17:24try to do is a run of tops, Chrome, gold, Mariano Rivera
- 17:31cards. And one of my, one of the all
- 17:34time great, one of my all time favorite baseball moments is a
- 17:37Mariano Rivera moment. Oh boy.
- 17:38Here we go, here we go. There it is.
- 17:41Just when I was starting to like, you know, so when I am
- 17:47looking at these gold refractors, I'm looking and I'm
- 17:50like, well, that one's really affordable, but it's not
- 17:54numbered, but it's gold. So did they just not number
- 17:58them? And then I'm looking and I'm
- 18:00like, this one's out of like, I don't remember what it was 380
- 18:04or 450 or 449 or something. And I'm like, so wait, so and
- 18:10for a few, for a year or two, there was no numbering.
- 18:14And then there was a numbering out of like a few 100 and then
- 18:19there's A and then it goes to like out of 50.
- 18:21So I'm like, so when did it go to out of 50?
- 18:24When did it go to numbered at all?
- 18:27So then I'm I'm texting with Dylan and Dylan double D is
- 18:31like, well, oh, so this is here. He's like pumped.
- 18:34He's like, oh man, this is awesome.
- 18:35So he's like trying to help me and he's like, OK, so in this
- 18:38year they started numbering them and then this year they, you
- 18:42know, went to this number and I'm like, how do you know this,
- 18:45'cause I'm like, more than anything I want to figure out
- 18:47how do I find out about it? Like, where did you learn this?
- 18:52And he goes, oh, I just shamed shoebox legends.
- 18:55I, I, I would text them like 15 times a day for like 2 months
- 18:59try. And he's just like, I, I'd ask
- 19:01him questions and he'd answer it.
- 19:02And I'm like, I don't want to bug someone.
- 19:05But so then I'm like sitting there going, well, maybe instead
- 19:10of Rivera, I go Jeter because I love Jeter and I know people
- 19:14think he's overrated and stuff, but what Jeter did off the field
- 19:18is more important than we did on the field.
- 19:20And you know, his his hit total anyway.
- 19:23I love Derek Jeter and I'm like, maybe I do Jeter and then like
- 19:27they're crazy expensive for like a gold refractor.
- 19:32It's like like his, you know, 15th year card is like like
- 19:35super expensive. I'm like, I can't spend $1000 on
- 19:39this. I could buy a, could buy a Ty
- 19:41Cobb card for $1000. So wouldn't.
- 19:44So then I'm starting to go, well, well, am I just, what am I
- 19:47doing? So I'm just in this, I'm in this
- 19:51tornado. It's like spinning and I'm just
- 19:54like flying around with, you know, Dorothy is flying by and
- 19:58cows from movies are flying by. And I'm like, I don't know what
- 20:02I'm doing. And I want to get into it.
- 20:04Modern people. I'm interested but I don't get
- 20:08it. So you're going, first of all,
- 20:11you're talking about two of the most collectible 2 of the all
- 20:15time greats from the greatest team from the one of the
- 20:18greatest dynasties of all time. All right, you're getting back
- 20:23in the good graces. Which, by the way, Jeter never
- 20:26did anything off the field other than destroy the Marlins.
- 20:28So I don't know. I don't know what you're talking
- 20:30about, but so. Jeter yeah, very expensive, but
- 20:37I go through the same thing with paid remarkiness.
- 20:39Adam, Splendid Sports. Oh yeah.
- 20:42We know Adam has an insane Pedro Martinez.
- 20:46One of the best in the world. Yes, yes.
- 20:51And I envy that collection. I can't spend that kind of money
- 20:56on Pedro Martinez cards. So I'm going, I'm down grading
- 21:01to Nomar Garcia Para, who by the time by the time he had left the
- 21:06Red Sox, I did not like him anymore.
- 21:09But I can remember how much I loved Nomar from 1997 through
- 21:15like 2002 for five or six seasons.
- 21:20He was one of my favorite baseball players and his cards
- 21:22are cheap. So I'm buying all of as many of
- 21:27his base refractors as I had tops Chrome refractors, Bowman
- 21:32Chrome refractors, Stadium Club Chrome refractors as I can.
- 21:36And I'll just have a display here in my office.
- 21:41I love, first of all, I really like Nomar.
- 21:47He's one of my favorite all time Red Sox and I love that.
- 21:52That's exactly the sweet spot that I'm looking for is a guy
- 21:56that I really liked who's affordable, but I don't want to
- 22:00just go get a bunch of like the silver Prisms because those are
- 22:04kind of like they're not, they're not super special.
- 22:09They're they're kind of like you're checking boxes instead of
- 22:12like like I want, I want to collect a little bit at like the
- 22:16next level, like a little bit more in than that.
- 22:20I will say this though, and and I haven't shown this, obviously
- 22:23I haven't shown my channel hasn't shown up in the mail yet.
- 22:26I don't think I showed you, but one of my former students was
- 22:32drafted, Matt Manning was drafted 9th by the Tigers, was
- 22:36in their system for a long time, had a couple of really good
- 22:38seasons in the majors. He gave me a game used jersey
- 22:41from the Tigers. He ends up getting released mid
- 22:46year this year and he signs on with the Phillies and then he's
- 22:52in the Phillies system and they're working with him and
- 22:55like they're, you know, development system like just
- 22:58trying to rebuild him. And the Philly signed Walker
- 23:02Buehler and Matt was taking up a 40 man roster spot.
- 23:07And so they they cut Matt to get Walker Buehler signed on the 40
- 23:12man roster spot. Anyway, that's a long story to
- 23:15where I am with Matt. Great guy.
- 23:17I know I'll golf with him in the next couple of months.
- 23:20He's home now and I, I got his black one of one finite.
- 23:29It's a cool card and it's a super cool card.
- 23:33It's basically one of his best, if not his best prism card.
- 23:38And it was, they had an asking price of $200 on it.
- 23:44And I'm like, that's reasonable. I mean, it's ungraded what
- 23:47whatever. And I, I'm like that this guy
- 23:51doesn't want that card. It's been sitting there.
- 23:53I've been watching it for two years.
- 23:55So I offered him. I offered him 40 bucks and he
- 23:58took it. That's an amazing story.
- 24:03But how cool is it because I already have his flagship tops
- 24:09Chrome one of one super factor. So I have one of his best tops
- 24:15cards. I have his out of five first
- 24:19Bowman auto and now I have his one of one black finite for 40
- 24:26bucks. And it's like, but that's kind
- 24:28of fun. Like that little kind of
- 24:29treasure hunt. Like this is a this is kind of a
- 24:32big card. You know, I don't it doesn't
- 24:35have to be Derek Jeter, but it has to be somebody that's
- 24:39special to me. But again, I just want to make
- 24:42sure I understand what I'm getting into.
- 24:46And if you're in it, it's like, I'll give you, I'll give you an
- 24:49example. When I was a kid, I played mad.
- 24:54You played Madden on your like Sega or stuff or something,
- 24:56right? Madden was like the game, right?
- 24:59And you, everyone would be Emmett Smith.
- 25:01You just hurdle the whole way around the end and go score
- 25:04touchdowns. And then I went like 3 years
- 25:09where I didn't play Madden. And then I was like with some
- 25:11friends, like, hey, I want to play Madden.
- 25:13I'm like, yeah, I'm trying to play Madden.
- 25:14Like what? What the heck is going on?
- 25:16I'm lost. Like how do I throw the ball?
- 25:19Like everything is different and that's how I feel about modern
- 25:23cards is I feel like it evolved. It's like you can't stop playing
- 25:27fantasy football or when you come back, you have to start
- 25:30from scratch. Like you you're either in it or
- 25:33you're out. And if you're out, it's like you
- 25:35just got dropped off on the moon.
- 25:38And that's how I feel about modern right now is I genuinely,
- 25:41I'm not a dumb person. I don't think I'm a dumb.
- 25:44I got good grades in college and stuff, but I don't know what is
- 25:48happening with modern and I want it 'cause I like it, I like it.
- 25:53You need to collect like a Scott Brosius.
- 25:56No, come on. That's that's where the
- 25:59affordable stuff is. Scott Brosius was a how many did
- 26:03he win 4 World Series? Was he on all?
- 26:054A's and before that. Oh, so no Jason Giambi either.
- 26:11Jason I like a little bit more, but that's a whole different.
- 26:14I I like kind of the tortured soul, like the guy who you know,
- 26:20but that we don't need to get into Jason Giambi right now.
- 26:25So yeah, I mean, I think if I were you, I would find, pick a
- 26:29player, yeah, find a parallel that you like and stick with
- 26:33that parallel. And it might not be numbered the
- 26:36same, but you can always find an estimated print run online.
- 26:41Yeah. I I just Google what's the print
- 26:44run of so and so a parallel and you can usually find some
- 26:49estimate somewhere. Yeah, do you watch the brothers
- 26:55duo with iconic Al and his brother Brian Professor?
- 27:01Yeah, I have watched one episode.
- 27:04I think I love Al, Yeah. I mean, his brother's great too.
- 27:07But yeah, I'll be a fan. I just, I don't have time to
- 27:10watch enough. All the stuff I want to watch I
- 27:13don't have time for unfortunately.
- 27:14Brian's a fellow teacher and he's really into 90s refractors
- 27:19and I love his channel and I don't have any cards like that,
- 27:23but I love his channel and a lot of the reason I love is because
- 27:26I kind of am. I'm, it's like one place.
- 27:29I feel like he's teaching about 90s refractors and I can start
- 27:33to learn about it but it just feels so dumb.
- 27:36Like I feel dumb. Yeah, the 90s refractors are
- 27:39brutal and they're so expensive. Yeah, I still need a 93 tops.
- 27:47Finest refractor of like I, I almost bid on a Barry Bonds the
- 27:53other day and it's like it's like $1000 card.
- 27:57But I'm like, it's like, if you look at that era, if you look at
- 28:01the 90s, it's Bonds as the hitter.
- 28:05I mean, I know some people are yelling King Griffey Junior, you
- 28:08moron. OK.
- 28:10But Bonds being in Northern California, Bonds is the guy,
- 28:14right? And the 93 finest Refractor is
- 28:18like the set, the parallel that started it all.
- 28:23And it's like, to me, that's like a super important card.
- 28:27The Bonds 93 Finest Refractor is like a big card, but then again,
- 28:33I'm like, or I could go buy, you know, like a Walter Johnson
- 28:39card. Right.
- 28:40Yeah. And that's the struggle I'm
- 28:42having. I just made an offer this past
- 28:45week on a 93 Tops Finest refractor of Clemens.
- 28:49Wait I've been on the same card, is it APSA 7?
- 28:53It is, yeah. I've bid on that.
- 28:56I've I've made offers on that card.
- 28:58Yeah, I made an offer this past week.
- 29:00I made two or three offers and he what?
- 29:01Was your offer 'cause they're asking 250 or 255 or something?
- 29:06I think let me let me look hang on.
- 29:09I've got my eBay up here. Bids and offers do do do do.
- 29:16OK, I offered no his buy it now price is 285.
- 29:22OK. My offer was 220.
- 29:25I think I offered 220 too. This is unbelievable.
- 29:30Like we're. Colluding with each other.
- 29:32Fighting over the same card, bro bro, you're no bro.
- 29:38Bro look at this. I offered 220.
- 29:43I offered 220. When did you offer 2:20 on that
- 29:46card? It does not say.
- 29:53It doesn't say, does it? Three days ago, maybe.
- 29:57Mine was more than three days ago.
- 29:59Hang on, I'm I'm gonna Google, I'm gonna go into my Gmail and
- 30:03see offered. We offered the same amount on
- 30:06the same exact card. Yeah, that's weird.
- 30:10Pardon me last. It's the last 93 tops.
- 30:13Finest refractor I need for what I wanna do.
- 30:16No, I don't care about your sob story.
- 30:18I want the card too, but it's I mean the 285 that he's asking is
- 30:25fair. I'm just cheap.
- 30:27I mean 285 is fair for that card.
- 30:29It's a 7. It's a generation 9 holder,
- 30:34generation 8 holder. So it's it wasn't graded crazy
- 30:37long ago. It's a little off center.
- 30:40The case is a little beat up but you could get it re slabbed.
- 30:45Yeah, I don't have an e-mail about it and it's out of my
- 30:48notifications by now. So it's probably, it was
- 30:51actually probably 2 weeks ago now that I think about it.
- 30:54That's about when I sent it. Yeah, 2, two weeks makes sense
- 30:58because I found out two weeks ago I was getting a new roof and
- 31:02that's when I was like, oh, got to shut down the sports card
- 31:04buying for a little while. So yeah, two weeks, maybe even 2
- 31:081/2 weeks ago. Dude same card same offer.
- 31:13That's that's insane. It's very, very unusual. 220
- 31:18bucks PSA 7 same exact card. Same.
- 31:22Yeah, I have all of the Red Sox from 93 Tops finest plus the Tim
- 31:27Wakefield and Clemens is the last one I need.
- 31:34Maybe I should and? Of course, I think if anybody's
- 31:35saying why do you say plus Tim Wakefield was because he was
- 31:38with the Pirates at the time. Yeah, but Tim Wakefield is a
- 31:42special place in there, in the hearts of Red Sox fans.
- 31:47And isn't he the one that Boone hit the home run off of?
- 31:54You had to give me back. I, hey, I, I will say this.
- 32:01When I took a tour of Fenway Park the day before the Yankees
- 32:07and the Red Sox faced off there, that was really cool.
- 32:13Sitting in the dugout, walking along the warning track going
- 32:18into the Green Monster. That was wild.
- 32:22It is really, really cool. I can't wait to get a tour of
- 32:27that iconic Sacramento field. You mean where the A's play?
- 32:33Yeah, the same place the AAA team has been playing for 30
- 32:37years. The Rivercats.
- 32:39Oh my gosh. I did go to a game there this
- 32:42year though. I would love to go to a game
- 32:44there honestly. It it's actually really cool
- 32:46'cause it's this tiny little. Park Yeah, yeah, I went to.
- 32:49And even that, they couldn't sell tickets unless it was like
- 32:52the Yankees or Red Sox. They wouldn't even sell out.
- 32:55And there's like, not that many seats.
- 32:57Yeah, I went to the Hall of Fame game at the Cooperstown Hall of
- 33:01Fame Baseball Hall of Fame when I was in 8th grade, and it was
- 33:06just this tiny little park and it was amazing.
- 33:09You're sitting right on top of the field, basically.
- 33:11Yeah. Loved it.
- 33:14Yeah, yeah, that's pretty cool. 90s cards, it's so easy to get
- 33:21lost, not in the 90s, but modern, ultra modern, so easy to
- 33:24get lost. And for me, if I can just stick
- 33:27with a plan and not get caught up in, oh, I need, I need every
- 33:33Cooper flag, rookie card, 'cause there's thousands of them.
- 33:35Cooper flag, by the way, Maine legend, and I'm from Maine, also
- 33:39a Maine legend, just like Cooper flag.
- 33:44You know, I, I, I'd love to have all of Jason Tatum's rookie
- 33:48cards, Jaylen Brown's rookie cards, never gonna get them.
- 33:51I don't even try. So I try to get the the iconic
- 33:54ones and on the by the way, a side benefit of sticking to
- 33:58these specific cards is that they're the ones that are the
- 34:01most desirable and the ones that are more likely to go up in
- 34:04value over time. Doesn't say, I'm not saying
- 34:07they're definitely going to, but they hold their value better
- 34:11than like a heritage base card or or something that people just
- 34:19don't care that much about after the after the set is released
- 34:22and people have bought them. They just don't sell that well,
- 34:25but tops Chrome refractors do. Yeah, that, I mean, it makes
- 34:29sense 'cause there's always going to be people building the
- 34:32rainbow and they're recognizable and it's tops and I just, I
- 34:38don't know, I, I, I do have a Bowman Chrome Patrick Willis
- 34:46rookie autographed. But it but it's, it's, you know,
- 34:51third part, it's after the fact autographed.
- 34:55He about a third of his fan mail to the stadium.
- 35:01He'll sign. And so I've sent to him before
- 35:05and not gotten it back and I've sent to him before and gotten it
- 35:08back. So I do have his Bowman Chrome
- 35:11Rookie auto D through the mail, but that's an expensive thing.
- 35:18If you start sending off like $30 cards to get autographed and
- 35:23they're not coming back, that can get expensive pretty quick.
- 35:27Yeah, yeah. I can't afford a Tom Brady,
- 35:30rookie Bowman, Chrome, not even the base.
- 35:33So I have, I have just the the rookie Bowman, Tom Brady and
- 35:37it's in APSA 5 because I can't afford A7 or 8.
- 35:40And I could eventually afford them, of course, but do I want
- 35:43to spend that much money when I can get a five that looks
- 35:45amazing? And then same thing with 2009
- 35:48tops with Steph Curry. I can only afford the tops base
- 35:52Steph Curry rookie and that cost a ton of money.
- 35:56It's not among the most expensive cars I've ever
- 35:59purchased. Yeah, that's, I mean, it's that,
- 36:04yeah, that. And that's The thing is I don't
- 36:07want to be one of these people who learns from my mistakes on
- 36:11stuff like that. I want to learn and then not
- 36:14make big mistakes. So I'm trying to learn
- 36:18beforehand and maybe it's just because I grew up around vintage
- 36:23because my dad was a vintage collector, but it just seems a
- 36:28lot more simplified and, and sure, there are some smaller
- 36:31releases and some different things, but I just feel like I
- 36:36understand it and I don't feel like I understand the modern.
- 36:40And I do like it a lot and I do want to be a, a participant and
- 36:46at least start dipping my toe in a little bit more.
- 36:50So I don't know, there, there are.
- 36:57Let me ask you this. What do you think happened over
- 37:01the last year? This?
- 37:04I'm going to I'm going to pivot. Can I pivot?
- 37:08Pivot, Pivot away. I 'cause we're talking about
- 37:11modern and, and sometimes, you know, I'm always looking at
- 37:15like, what got hot? What is hot?
- 37:18When did it get hot? Why did it get hot?
- 37:21Like people suddenly pivoting in their collection, you know, sort
- 37:26of like how three or four years ago on card playing days,
- 37:32autographed cards, vintage cards, like just went bonkers.
- 37:38Why, why did that happen? Soccer cards, specifically
- 37:45Lionel Messi cards, have just gone crazy.
- 37:50Like, and I mean like they've like tripled in value in a year.
- 37:55All of them, All of them are just his iconic rookie cards.
- 37:58His iconic rookie cards have gone insane, but most messy
- 38:04cards have gone way up. But that iconic rookie card has
- 38:07come back down again already. It skyrocketed up and it's back
- 38:12down that only and I'm putting up air quotes here only half a
- 38:16million ish dollars when it went up to 11.5 yeah and PSA 10 went
- 38:21up to like 1.51 sold for 1.51, sold for like 1.2.
- 38:25It's back down, I think around half a million last I looked a
- 38:28week or two ago. So I, I've won.
- 38:32I, I mean, I'm a soccer fan and so I've wanted a messy card and
- 38:36I am a collector of what I collect the most are looks and,
- 38:41and I could talk about this in a second too, is I can have
- 38:45another pivot back. But I, I feel like he's got 3
- 38:51rookie cards and only one of them is good looking.
- 38:55It's one, one of them is a good looking card and it's sort of a
- 38:59portrait shot from about his chest up.
- 39:01It's a really nice looking card. Oh see, I like the other one the
- 39:05most of the one the PSA 10/1 that went up to one and a half
- 39:08million you. Like that more than I'm going to
- 39:12pull them up on the screen. I know we're not supposed to do
- 39:15this, but I don't care. I I'm going to show you why I
- 39:20think you're wrong. So I'm going to share my screen
- 39:24here real quick. So you like this one?
- 39:27Love it. Yes, OK.
- 39:30And. We're describing the hang on, go
- 39:33back to that for a second. Just so people know, this is the
- 39:362004 Panini. Lionel Messi mega cracks where
- 39:40he is dribbling the ball up field and you can see his whole
- 39:44body and the ball in front of his foot and he's looks like
- 39:48he's about to Juke out a defender.
- 39:50Yep, so we got the this one. Oh man, there's this picture.
- 40:00That's not the card though. This is the one I like.
- 40:12Yeah, mega cracks. You don't think that's a better
- 40:14looking card than the other one? No.
- 40:18Really. Nope.
- 40:19And frankly, it's not close. So this one is also a mega
- 40:25cracks, but it's the Barca compule card, which and there's
- 40:31a couple of them. There's like one in in Italian
- 40:33and 1 in Spanish and it's like camp.
- 40:36I don't remember the difference, but the spell, the one of the
- 40:39words is different. And but I love this image that
- 40:45right here. So I've wanted this card and so
- 40:47I've kind of tracked. I mean, I've made offers on this
- 40:50card. I've almost bought this card a
- 40:52couple of times and but all of a sudden messy cards went nuts.
- 40:59So. Why do you think that is?
- 41:02That's my question for you. You can't interrupt me and ask
- 41:05my question. That's my question.
- 41:07Right, I think that. They're what happened, I think.
- 41:10Where did Messi go? Nuts.
- 41:12I think there are a few things Iconic cards of iconic athletes
- 41:17have skyrocketed in value in general this year.
- 41:20Part of that is repack madness. The big repack companies want to
- 41:27have a like a really iconic card as their grail inside their
- 41:33repack product. And so they're buying up guys
- 41:37like messy guys like Jeter, things like that, that they can
- 41:41put in and say, hey, look at this amazing card and it creates
- 41:44more attention for those cards. The wealthy people, the wealthy
- 41:47buyers out there are also going after because they believe that
- 41:51they are great investments, iconic cards of iconic athletes.
- 41:55And then you have the bigger Youtubers.
- 41:58We're talking about those cards more and more and more.
- 42:01So this confluence of events has caused, there's probably more
- 42:06things happening too with this. It's caused all these cards to
- 42:11skyrocket in value. So why did it suddenly happen to
- 42:17Messi in the last 12 months, but it happened to Brady five years
- 42:23ago? Cause Brady was had just won
- 42:28another Super Bowl. It's happening to a lot.
- 42:31Hasn't done anything in. It's happening to all iconic
- 42:34cards though. If you look at any iconic cards,
- 42:37in fact, the Messi's come back down.
- 42:39I'm not sure you could say the same thing about the 89 Upper
- 42:42deck Griffey, for instance, which has doubled in value this
- 42:45year. Yeah, it's crazy.
- 42:50All right, I have one question as we wrap this up.
- 42:53We're 42 1/2 minutes in. Here's my one question for you.
- 42:59Who's the who's the GOAT who hasn't gone to the moon yet that
- 43:05you think is going to go to the moon?
- 43:08Who is missing? Cause Messi was basically
- 43:11overlooked. People weren't looking
- 43:13overlooking Jordan, they weren't overlooking Brady.
- 43:16They weren't overlooking, you know, Babe Ruth and stuff or
- 43:21even, you know, Messi suddenly went, people went, oh, wait,
- 43:26what about Messi? And then it went way up.
- 43:28Who's next? Who's the guy being overlooked?
- 43:32Why? Why does it have to be a guy?
- 43:33It could be a women's sports star.
- 43:34I'm. Sorry, you're right.
- 43:35I apologize to all the ladies out there.
- 43:39My deepest, my deepest of apologies to the man or woman,
- 43:43to the individual who is overlooked the most.
- 43:48Who is it? Larry Bird.
- 43:52Really. Yeah.
- 43:54Larry Bird is overlooked. He is overlooked.
- 43:59He's not the GOAT, no. He's a top seven or eight NBA
- 44:06player of all time, and he's largely overlooked.
- 44:09And then you've got guys like Tim Duncan, who was it was
- 44:14boring, right? There's no Tim Duncan's an all
- 44:17time great on five NBA championships.
- 44:20But he was boring and his career started in kind of the tail end
- 44:24or the the beginning of getting out of the junk wax era.
- 44:28So there's still a lot of junk wax characteristics of a lot of
- 44:30his rookie cards. What about baseball?
- 44:33I guess it would have to be Barry Bonds.
- 44:37Yeah, that's a. That's a pretty good pick.
- 44:41That's a pretty good pick. Rodger, Clemens, Both.
- 44:44I think Clemens is too hate people, people hate Clemens.
- 44:51Yeah, I do too. Good.
- 44:54Grief. Yeah.
- 44:57So, so, so you're going with, you're going with Larry Bird.
- 45:03Yeah, When was the last time you saw one of his cards sell at
- 45:07auction for a ridiculous amount and everybody was talking about,
- 45:10oh, man, I can't believe this card sold for this much money.
- 45:13No. It's like he's too Jordan's
- 45:18shadow is too big. The shadow of Jordan makes
- 45:24everyone else so in that era, especially so below him.
- 45:30It takes until the end of Jordan's era before a Kobe or a
- 45:34LeBron can not be in his shadow 'cause they weren't really.
- 45:38At the same time, anybody who played while Jordan played is so
- 45:43many rungs below Jordan in everybody's eyes that I don't.
- 45:46I don't think all of a sudden they're going to blow up 'cause
- 45:49they're why. Why not just by Jordan?
- 45:51Well, another guy would be Kevin Durant.
- 45:53He's not a GOAT, but he's a top 15 to 20 player of all time.
- 45:58He's won two NBA titles. He was the Finals MVP of both of
- 46:04those, but because because of, you know, he's got a lot of
- 46:08controversies. He had the the burner accounts
- 46:11on Twitter. He's pretty corny.
- 46:14He left the Thunder to chase rings with with Steph Curry,
- 46:18which there's really nothing wrong with that.
- 46:20But the perception by the public and the collecting public of OK,
- 46:25you chased rings by by going to the greatest team of all time.
- 46:30The reason that LeBron saved his legacy is when he went back to
- 46:38Cleveland and won. That was the most impressive
- 46:42thing he ever did. If he had just gone to the Heat
- 46:46and then he went to the Lakers and he never went back to
- 46:49Cleveland and took this awful team and and made a title, then
- 46:56that is his legacy. But I don't know.
- 47:01So, OK, all right, I'll take I'll take Bird, but I don't
- 47:06know. It's OK.
- 47:09It's it's a decent choice. Thank you, this was a joy as
- 47:14always. This was fun.
- 47:16This was fun. Now, I don't know if people like
- 47:18hearing us talk about, I mean, we're talking about cards, but
- 47:23we're talking about getting scammed and we're talking about
- 47:27Modern and we're talking about Larry Bird.
- 47:31I think people like variety. Yeah.
- 47:34You guys like Variety? Let us know.
- 47:37Yeah. Do you have any interest in in
- 47:41asking anybody listening about may be a conversation starter
- 47:48for one of the upcoming episodes.
- 47:52You mean having them comment something that we should talk
- 47:54about? Yeah, Yeah.
- 47:56I'm always open to that. Well, then down below comment,
- 47:59comment, I would. I am always interested.
- 48:03That's why I do my Q&A weekly is because I'm always interested.
- 48:06What does everybody else want to talk about?
- 48:08And then I always have at least one or two people want to talk
- 48:11about grading and then people are pissed that we're talking
- 48:14about grading. And I'm like, well, that's what
- 48:15people want to talk about. How dare you talk about the most
- 48:19popular thing in the sports card world?
- 48:22All right, buddy. Well, you know, it's almost time
- 48:26for that music to play. Any, any who do you do you want
- 48:31to announce your upcoming guest on your mother's?
- 48:35Well, by the way, if you haven't subscribed to Sports Card
- 48:38Clubhouse yet, we're we're we would appreciate if you'd
- 48:43consider it. We would have just go subscribe.
- 48:46Don't you know what don't, don't say.
- 48:49We would appreciate if you would consider it.
- 48:51You had better go subscribe and you should never listen again.
- 48:55I like that, Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:58Tough, tough guy over here. You want to talk about your next
- 49:01guest 'cause last time you talked about your next guest.
- 49:04Sure. My next guest is a guy named
- 49:06Cards Max on Twitter and this is so you want to be a dealer
- 49:11series that I do and cards Max. His name is Max, of course.
- 49:16I I assume his name is Max. Anyway, he is a very popular
- 49:21young Twitter sports card dealer and I think he also does card
- 49:26shows. We're going to get into all
- 49:27that. And he's also very opinionated
- 49:31and he's, I would guess 24 years old and he has like 35,000
- 49:38followers on Twitter. And I think he is.
- 49:45I don't know if popular is the right word, but certainly well
- 49:50regarded as a Twitter dealer. Well, that sounds interesting.
- 49:55I'm, I'm anxious to hear it. I listened to your Chris 1 and I
- 50:01listened to your Adam. I listened to 2/3 of your Adam
- 50:04Gray one, and I've enjoyed both of them quite a bit.
- 50:09I need to finish the Adam Gray one, but very good.
- 50:13I enjoy them very much. Thank you.
- 50:17All right, here we go. Thanks, Greg.
- 50:20All right, buddy, Bye.
