Speaker 2: the Mayor of South Charleston, Frank Mullins Junior, Good morning, sir,
• 2:23
Speaker 2: and welcome, good morning, good morning show. Thanks to having me.
• 2:26
Speaker 2: Da've always always glad to be here, always glad to
• 2:29
Speaker 2: have you. Yeah, all right, So first of all, I
• 2:31
Speaker 2: have to ask you, Yeah, how's winter time been for
• 2:33
Speaker 2: South Charleston. I mean, because you know, it's it's been.
• 2:36
Speaker 2: It's it's been a rough one. Just went through another round,
• 2:39
Speaker 2: you know, Sunday night at the Monday morning, looking pretty
• 2:42
Speaker 2: good out there for the next several days. But how's
• 2:44
Speaker 2: winter time been for something? It's been, It's been tough.
• 2:46
  Speaker 4: It's been.
• 2:47
Speaker 5: Uh, you know, we've got through it pretty good, but uh,
• 2:49
Speaker 5: you know, assault rationing is a serious concern. Hopefully we
• 2:52
Speaker 5: don't get any more snow for a while. Because we're
• 2:54
Speaker 5: pretty much out and I think that's pretty much the
• 2:56
Speaker 5: consensus around the state. And I know, I know we've
• 2:59
Speaker 5: with this state. We've used out to them a couple
• 3:00
Speaker 5: of times. I know they're running low to Charleston. I
• 3:02
Speaker 5: know our directors talked yesterday, both public works directors talked,
• 3:05
Speaker 5: and we're all going.
• 3:06
Speaker 2: Through the same thing.
• 3:07
Speaker 5: And when when you have storms that spread throughout most
• 3:10
Speaker 5: of the country like this one has, and everybody's trying
• 3:12
Speaker 5: to replenish their salt it and and then rivers freeze
• 3:14
Speaker 5: on top of that, making it tough for the barges
• 3:16
Speaker 5: to get up and down.
• 3:18
Speaker 2: It's uh. I remember this happening back in the nineties
• 3:20
  Speaker 2: when I.
• 3:20
  Speaker 5: Was director of Public Works, and it's a it's a
• 3:22
Speaker 5: nerve wracking time for the public works director, but we'll
• 3:24
Speaker 5: get through it well.
• 3:25
Speaker 2: And again this has been and this winter has been
• 3:29
Speaker 2: one that it just seems like that we haven't had
• 3:32
Speaker 2: And I talked to Brian Hughes meteorologists about this from
• 3:35
Speaker 2: time to time. It's not that it's been that bad
• 3:37
Speaker 2: of a winter overall. It's just that we had the
• 3:40
Speaker 2: one snow in January that didn't go anywhere. Yeah, you know,
• 3:43
Speaker 2: because we had that was the weekend where we had
• 3:46
Speaker 2: the you know, the snow, the freezing rain, the rain,
• 3:48
Speaker 2: and then and it was and that snow stuck around
• 3:50
Speaker 2: for like two weeks and it just kept refreezing and refreezing.
• 3:53
Speaker 2: We had a couple of more events after that. But
• 3:55
Speaker 2: you're right, the salt issue is is a big, a
• 3:57
Speaker 2: big issue. Yeah, it's a big issue, and particularly for us.
• 4:00
Speaker 5: You know, we're known for the snower move on South
• 4:01
Speaker 5: charlest and so you know it's not supposed to stick
• 4:03
Speaker 5: in our city, but it may if it comes again.
• 4:05
Speaker 2: Let's hope not. You guys have our as you said,
• 4:08
Speaker 2: did you probably won't want to pat yourself on the back,
• 4:11
Speaker 2: but I mean a lot of people would pat the
• 4:13
Speaker 2: city of South trol about people that I work with
• 4:15
Speaker 2: here in the building to live in South Charles and
• 4:16
Speaker 2: they say, you guys really go above and beyond that. Yeah,
• 4:19
Speaker 2: we take a lot of pride in that.
• 4:20
Speaker 5: That's something we you know, we are garbage collection of
• 4:22
Speaker 5: snow re move on South Charleston. Those are two things
• 4:23
Speaker 5: I always tell your public works guys, don't that's the
• 4:25
Speaker 5: two things you don't mess up in South Charleston. Garbage
• 4:27
Speaker 5: collector of snow removing. So yeah, but they're good at
• 4:29
Speaker 5: they do a good job and we'll get through it.
• 4:31
Speaker 5: We'll get through it. How are things uh in South
• 4:33
Speaker 5: Charlest what's new? Yeah, everything's been. The newest thing we
• 4:36
Speaker 5: just did is is we I think I talked to
• 4:39
Speaker 5: you about it on another show. I think as we
• 4:41
Speaker 5: cut the ribbon on anports, esports and gaming new facility
• 4:44
Speaker 5: to Community Center. So we're excited about that. Uh, South
• 4:47
Speaker 5: Charleston High School's got a class pertains to that. They
• 4:50
Speaker 5: came down and participated in it. We've reached out to
• 4:52
Speaker 5: some of our colleges who have that in their colleges
• 4:54
Speaker 5: as well, and we're hoping to get some tournaments and
• 4:56
  Speaker 5: competition going soon.
• 4:57
Speaker 2: So for those who may or for those who may
• 4:59
Speaker 2: have heard that in you we did a couple of
• 5:00
Speaker 2: weeks ago and I producer Ryan Nicholson to ask a
• 5:02
Speaker 2: couple of questions in there as well. We appreciate that,
• 5:05
Speaker 2: but explain what E sports is. I'll do the best
• 5:08
Speaker 2: I can. Tag it back in again. But yeah, well,
• 5:13
  Speaker 2: I mean it's you know, it's we're good right now.
• 5:15
Speaker 5: A lot of different games on on there now where
• 5:18
Speaker 5: it's it's a competitive situation to where kids are even
• 5:21
Speaker 5: get scholarship to go to college on these kind of things.
• 5:23
Speaker 5: Now what we called back in today video video, what
• 5:25
Speaker 5: we called video games, A little different scenario, a lot
• 5:28
Speaker 5: uh yeah, a lot of different scenario. And I don't
• 5:30
Speaker 5: know how well I can explain. I need some of
• 5:31
Speaker 5: my younger staff to come on and do it, maybe,
• 5:33
Speaker 5: but uh, but it's exciting and it's uh and again
• 5:36
Speaker 5: it's just it brings it can bring. It's almost like
• 5:38
Speaker 5: think about this, think about bringing baseball and soccer tournaments
• 5:41
Speaker 5: to your community and how how what an economic impact
• 5:44
Speaker 5: that has, and bring it to your hotels and your restaurants.
• 5:46
Speaker 5: And this kind of opens up the opportunity to do
• 5:48
Speaker 5: that and this kind of activity as well, and maybe
• 5:51
Speaker 5: even more so. And it was I think I shared
• 5:53
Speaker 5: with it was born out of our design of our
• 5:55
Speaker 5: new facility where we're we're hoping to build soon and
• 5:58
Speaker 5: and I just decided to go ahead and pulled the
• 6:00
Speaker 5: trigger and let's get started at the community center and
• 6:01
Speaker 5: see how well is received.
• 6:02
Speaker 2: I mean, this thing is huge, as you said, and
• 6:06
Speaker 2: again older people not old older people. I guess we said,
• 6:10
Speaker 2: what video games for me? It's like I'm thinking, pac Man, Paul,
• 6:14
Speaker 2: you know, because I'm old, but it's become a totally
• 6:18
Speaker 2: different thing. And you said, students get college scholarships for
• 6:21
Speaker 2: this now, and before you do what I have a
• 6:24
Speaker 2: tendency to do, which it Yeah, these young kids today
• 6:26
Speaker 2: or whatever. A couple of things to keep in mind.
• 6:28
Speaker 2: What those games do, what we call quote unquote games
• 6:31
Speaker 2: teaches a lot of skills that are Last week I'll
• 6:36
Speaker 2: give you example. Last week I talked to Chris Hamilton
• 6:38
Speaker 2: from the Coal Association on the show, and he was
• 6:40
Speaker 2: talking about the modern coal mine, and you can transform
• 6:43
Speaker 2: this into any business that you want a lot of
• 6:46
Speaker 2: those skills that they're using were learned on these e sports. Yeah,
• 6:50
Speaker 2: you know, I mean like robotics and things of that nature.
• 6:52
Speaker 2: So it's not just about playing games for a living.
• 6:55
Speaker 2: It's about transitioning those skills into other things. Yeah, we
• 6:59
Speaker 2: go through that too.
• 7:00
Speaker 5: Surprised how much of that from a technology standpoint you
• 7:03
Speaker 5: have to learn now to do jobs we used to
• 7:05
Speaker 5: remember as being on the.
• 7:06
Speaker 2: Line in the plants.
• 7:07
Speaker 5: Yeah, and how long it takes now for those folks
• 7:09
Speaker 5: to learn that skill set to be on the line.
• 7:11
Speaker 5: I went through it with a stamp with all the
• 7:13
Speaker 5: modern technology for stamping out car parts that they go
• 7:15
Speaker 5: through takes two to three years sometimes the edit creating
• 7:18
Speaker 5: train these folks to do those jobs. Just what you're
• 7:20
Speaker 5: talking about because of technology. Yeah, it's amazing, it's amazing.
• 7:23
Speaker 2: We're talking to South Charleston May Frankmullin's a day Island
• 7:26
Speaker 2: show and five eighty line has brought you in part
• 7:28
Speaker 2: by Pinnacle Consultants help me to identify environmental concerns as best.
• 7:31
Speaker 2: It's led mold, indoor quality issues and buildings all across
• 7:34
Speaker 2: the state, providing inspections, testing and accredited lab services you
• 7:37
Speaker 2: can trust. Check out Pinnacle Corp dot net helping you
• 7:40
Speaker 2: understand your environment because what you don't know can hurt you.
• 7:43
Speaker 2: Let's talk retail in South Charleston.
• 7:45
  Speaker 6: I mean.
• 7:46
Speaker 2: Things going up, things happening. Yeah, talking those things going well.
• 7:49
Speaker 5: We cut a couple of ribbons on some small businesses
• 7:51
Speaker 5: downtown here here in the last couple of weeks as well.
• 7:54
Speaker 5: But park places what folks are always really interested in.
• 7:56
Speaker 5: It's going very well. Matter of fact, I put my
• 7:58
Speaker 5: hard hat on and went and tour to New Kroger
• 8:00
Speaker 5: facility just this week and it's it's amazing inside. Uh,
• 8:03
Speaker 5: what's gonna what's gonna be in there? I think people
• 8:05
Speaker 5: are gonna be excited. I know people are excited about
• 8:07
Speaker 5: it because I hear about it every day.
• 8:08
Speaker 2: And this Kroger that is coming to park Place, he
• 8:11
Speaker 2: is unlike any other Kroger that you've ever seen.
• 8:14
Speaker 5: The first one in the state of West Virginia is
• 8:16
Speaker 5: called a marketplace. And so they they do more than groceries,
• 8:19
Speaker 5: although groceries are still there, you know, it's still their
• 8:21
Speaker 5: big their big deal.
• 8:22
Speaker 2: At the end of the day.
• 8:23
Speaker 5: They have that what they call soft products as well,
• 8:25
Speaker 5: which you'll see in any wal Mart or Target or
• 8:26
Speaker 5: things like that, outdoor furnit or clothing, cook wear, whatever
• 8:30
  Speaker 5: it may be.
• 8:31
  Speaker 7: You know.
• 8:31
Speaker 5: So they have some other things in there as well.
• 8:32
Speaker 5: But I mean, like I say, I toured this facilitan
• 8:35
Speaker 5: just the just the area where they're going to have
• 8:37
Speaker 5: their beauty products for example. Man, it's amazing. It's almost
• 8:40
Speaker 5: like a store in its own and so on a
• 8:42
Speaker 5: sushi bar and the wine and cheese and just everything
• 8:44
Speaker 5: that it has that we don't have now. And I
• 8:47
Speaker 5: think people are going to be real excited once we
• 8:48
Speaker 5: get that t one hundred and twenty two thousand square
• 8:50
Speaker 5: foot store compared to the fifty thousand square foot we
• 8:53
Speaker 5: have across the street to Riverwock kind of gives you
• 8:54
Speaker 5: an idea of the size.
• 8:56
Speaker 2: And I'm just kind of curious, and you don't have
• 8:58
Speaker 2: to tell us if you can't. But what what Lon
• 9:00
Speaker 2: didn't want to do that in South Charleston because that's
• 9:02
Speaker 2: a pretty big feather in the capital the city of
• 9:04
Speaker 2: South Charleston. When you think that this is the first
• 9:06
Speaker 2: one like it in the state. Charleston doesn't have it,
• 9:08
Speaker 2: Morgantown doesn't have it, Huntington doesn't have it.
• 9:10
Speaker 5: The South Charleston does well, you know, I think, And
• 9:13
Speaker 5: just real quickly, the backstory to it is, you know,
• 9:15
Speaker 5: Kruger came on board early on in this project and
• 9:17
Speaker 5: then they kind of left. They had they had a
• 9:19
Speaker 5: big change in their corporate headquarters, real estate, folks changed hands,
• 9:22
Speaker 5: leadership changed hand, and they changed their mind they weren't
• 9:24
Speaker 5: going to do it. And then this a couple of
• 9:25
Speaker 5: years later. As a matter of fact, I mentioned that
• 9:28
Speaker 5: to our folks that are working on So let's reach
• 9:30
Speaker 5: back out to them. It's been a couple of years.
• 9:31
Speaker 5: See if they have some more interesting and lo and
• 9:34
Speaker 5: behold they did, and the new leadership came in they
• 9:36
Speaker 5: wanted to come back. Why, Dave, I think is the
• 9:38
  Speaker 5: site itself. It's like we've been going to I haven't
• 9:41
Speaker 5: done it, but I've sent my staff. They've gone to
• 9:43
Speaker 5: Vegas with our developer. And one of the things that's
• 9:44
Speaker 5: so attractive about this area highest traffic count in the
• 9:47
Speaker 5: state of West Virginia is right there on Route sixty
• 9:49
Speaker 5: Jefferson park Our Jefferson Road. I'm sorry so that that
• 9:53
Speaker 5: traffic count in itself makes that site so attractive, and
• 9:56
Speaker 5: I think that has a lot to do with all
• 9:58
Speaker 5: the all the the the interest we've had from retailers
• 10:01
Speaker 5: around the country to come there.
• 10:03
Speaker 2: I've said this for a long time. It's still true today.
• 10:04
Speaker 5: We have more interest than we have space Oblata, which
• 10:06
Speaker 5: is a good thing that's allowed us to be a
• 10:08
Speaker 5: little bit choosy. So I can't answer for Kroger's the
• 10:12
Speaker 5: wives specifically they want to do this particular marketplace. But
• 10:15
Speaker 5: at the end of the day, I think a lot
• 10:16
Speaker 5: of it has to do with that traffic count.
• 10:18
Speaker 2: Oh, we had to tax. Somebody said, do we have
• 10:20
Speaker 2: a projected opening for the new Kroger.
• 10:22
Speaker 5: Yes, June this. Yeah, Now, remember those dates are always
• 10:25
  Speaker 5: a moving target.
• 10:26
Speaker 2: Especially when we'll go back to the weather for a moment. Yeah,
• 10:30
Speaker 2: they reached out to us.
• 10:31
Speaker 5: If you all remember, there was a story not too
• 10:33
Speaker 5: long ago about Kroger's game plan for the area and
• 10:36
Speaker 5: what they were going to do, and and also in
• 10:38
Speaker 5: that conversation I had with them, they targeted to June.
• 10:41
Speaker 5: The third, which I believe is the Winds the first
• 10:43
Speaker 5: Wednesday in June as the grand opening for the new facility,
• 10:46
  Speaker 5: and you'll be.
• 10:46
Speaker 2: There with a ribbon ready to they're ready to go, Yes, sir.
• 10:49
Speaker 2: What about the other stores out there? Well, if you
• 10:52
Speaker 2: look over there now, you see actually four things under construction.
• 10:56
Speaker 2: Obviously the Kroger. There'll be two buildings.
• 10:58
Speaker 5: You see one going up being directed the steel you
• 11:00
Speaker 5: see the steal up now, another identical building, just identical
• 11:03
Speaker 5: to that, will be going up right beside it. Those
• 11:05
Speaker 5: will house seven retailers of piece, some of them I've
• 11:09
Speaker 5: already announced, like Sketchers and Mister Magoo and Nothing, Bunt Cake,
• 11:12
Speaker 5: some of the smaller businesses will go in there. There'll
• 11:14
Speaker 5: be fourteen altogether. And then if you look farther to
• 11:16
Speaker 5: the west, just the very west end of the property,
• 11:18
Speaker 5: next to the office of the interstate exit, you'll see
• 11:21
Speaker 5: the fuel station for Kroger going up as well. The
• 11:23
Speaker 5: canopy is already up there and it's ready to go
• 11:26
Speaker 5: as well. So those are the four things being built.
• 11:28
  Speaker 2: Now.
• 11:28
Speaker 5: You'll see Mission Barbecue begin this spring. We have had
• 11:31
Speaker 5: great contact with Minards now it looks like they're about
• 11:34
Speaker 5: ready to go as well. We're expecting their building plans
• 11:36
Speaker 5: any day so we can issue their building permit. So
• 11:38
Speaker 5: I expect them to be started this spring as well.
• 11:40
Speaker 5: So things are really starting to pick up pace over there,
• 11:43
Speaker 5: and hopefully by this time next year we'll see a
• 11:45
Speaker 5: lot of shopping going on.
• 11:46
Speaker 2: I'm gonna say, if you had a proje and again
• 11:48
Speaker 2: things can change, Yeah, just like with Kroger. Yeah, but
• 11:51
Speaker 2: with a projected when pretty much everything is done, what
• 11:55
  Speaker 2: would that be.
• 11:56
Speaker 5: I would say, probably be the summer of twenty seven,
• 11:58
Speaker 5: when everything's done this or twenty six. I'm sorry, no, no,
• 12:02
Speaker 5: I'm sorry, twenty seven, twenty six already, don't get it.
• 12:06
Speaker 5: So yeah, so this summer what you'll see is what
• 12:08
Speaker 5: we call Phase one. The stores I just mentioned to you,
• 12:10
Speaker 5: and those those will all should be opened by this summer,
• 12:13
Speaker 5: and then the next phase, what we call Phase two,
• 12:15
Speaker 5: which will close on sometime this summer as well, and
• 12:18
Speaker 5: then you'll see those buildings starting to go up. They
• 12:21
Speaker 5: should be completed by no later than the spring and
• 12:23
Speaker 5: summer of twenty seven, and we should.
• 12:24
Speaker 2: Wash their hands this and be done.
• 12:25
Speaker 5: Everybody's shopping and shopping and eating and having a good time.
• 12:28
Speaker 2: How things gone over all. You mentioned Jefferson Road with
• 12:31
Speaker 2: the jail. I was through there late one night last
• 12:34
Speaker 2: week and had been in southern part of the state.
• 12:37
Speaker 2: For me, living in Putnam County, it's always easy to
• 12:39
Speaker 2: get off that Davis Creek and kind of bypass everything.
• 12:41
Speaker 2: Just amazed at the at the ease of getting through
• 12:45
Speaker 2: there now and the improvement.
• 12:46
Speaker 5: It's been amazing, and it's done exactly what we hoped
• 12:48
Speaker 5: it will do, which is keep that continuous flow of
• 12:50
Speaker 5: traffic going going out to Quarter g Now, whether you're
• 12:53
Speaker 5: going to Low's or going to get something to eat
• 12:55
Speaker 5: or wherever you're going, it's just so much easier time.
• 12:58
Speaker 2: I'm through there four or five times a day.
• 13:00
Speaker 5: I live in Spring Hills City Halls, and you know downtown,
• 13:02
Speaker 5: I'm down there going through it a bunch and then
• 13:05
Speaker 5: just the fact and your your muscle memory still tells
• 13:07
Speaker 5: you when you see a train like, oh no, there's
• 13:09
  Speaker 5: a train up.
• 13:09
Speaker 2: What I'm going to do?
• 13:10
Speaker 5: But then you realize I don't have to fool with
• 13:11
Speaker 5: that anymore? Right, So it's just that is that is
• 13:15
Speaker 5: that upgrade was so needed. Uh, and it's done exactly
• 13:18
Speaker 5: what we thought it would do. I think, Dame, You're right,
• 13:19
  Speaker 5: so convenient.

Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
• 16:48
Speaker 7: Good morning. Always a good time to be on your show,
• 16:52
Speaker 7: and certainly anytime I get to talk about Earl Lloyd,
• 16:55
Speaker 7: it makes it extra special.
• 16:57
Speaker 2: You and I have talked coach several times over the
• 16:59
Speaker 2: years about Earl Lloyd. But for those who may not know,
• 17:02
Speaker 2: give us the bio of Earl Lloyd and why he's
• 17:05
Speaker 2: so important to not only West Virginia State University, but
• 17:08
Speaker 2: the culture of basketball and to be honest with you,
• 17:10
Speaker 2: and not to engage in hyperbole, but the entire country.
• 17:17
Speaker 7: Yeah. So, Earl came to the campus of wes Virginia
• 17:20
Speaker 7: State in nineteen forty six and played for a coach
• 17:25
Speaker 7: at that time was Mark Cardwell, and so Earle played
• 17:29
Speaker 7: here from nineteen forty six to nineteen fifty. The nineteen
• 17:32
Speaker 7: forty eight team was thirty and oh and the only
• 17:36
Speaker 7: undefeated team in college basketball at any level, and so
• 17:40
Speaker 7: they had obviously an outstanding team. At the end of
• 17:44
Speaker 7: the nineteen fifty season, he was drafted by the Washington
• 17:47
Speaker 7: Capitals in the ninth round of the NBA and went
• 17:52
Speaker 7: on to make that team and then as the way
• 17:55
Speaker 7: the schedule fell, because Chuck Cooper was actually the first
• 17:59
Speaker 7: black player to get drafted, and who was drafted by
• 18:01
Speaker 7: the Boston Celtics in the second round that year and
• 18:05
Speaker 7: in Sweetwater Clifton was the first black player to sign
• 18:07
Speaker 7: an NBA contract. But the way the schedule fell, Earl
• 18:11
Speaker 7: became the first black basketball player to ever step foot
• 18:15
Speaker 7: into a game in the NBA in cover thirty first
• 18:19
Speaker 7: nineteen fifty the team folded. He spent year and a
• 18:23
Speaker 7: half two years in the army. At that time, the
• 18:27
Speaker 7: Korean War was going on. When he gets out of
• 18:30
Speaker 7: the Army, the Syracuse Nationals, who is now the Sill
• 18:32
Speaker 7: left his seventy six ers pick him up and he
• 18:36
Speaker 7: becomes one of the first two black players to win
• 18:39
Speaker 7: an NBA championship in nineteen fifty five. And then he
• 18:43
Speaker 7: went on to finish his career with the Detroit Pistons
• 18:46
Speaker 7: and he becomes the first black assistant coach in the
• 18:48
Speaker 7: NBA with them, and then becomes the first black full
• 18:52
Speaker 7: time head coach in the NBA as the year before that,
• 18:57
Speaker 7: Bill Russell was a player slash coach for the Bass
• 19:00
Speaker 7: and Celtics. So you know, Earl was, like I say,
• 19:03
Speaker 7: he was a fantastic player, and he became the first
• 19:08
Speaker 7: black player in the NBA, first black champion, first black
• 19:10
Speaker 7: assistant coach, and the first black full time head coach
• 19:14
Speaker 7: in the NBA. So he was quite the pioneer, tied to.
• 19:17
Speaker 2: Coach Brian Porr West Virginia State University. Beyond all the
• 19:20
Speaker 2: first he did coach and all of his accomplishments on
• 19:23
Speaker 2: the court and on the sidelines and in the boardrooms, whatever.
• 19:27
Speaker 2: What made Earl Lloyd, in your opinion, such a good
• 19:29
Speaker 2: man is just such a good person.
• 19:32
Speaker 7: He was just so humble. You know, he rarely talked
• 19:37
Speaker 7: about himself and I could hardly ever get him to
• 19:42
Speaker 7: even talk about the things that he did. I mean,
• 19:44
Speaker 7: he wanted to talk about me and my family and
• 19:47
Speaker 7: our program and how the team was doing and all
• 19:50
Speaker 7: those things. And he would always even deflected Jackie Robinson,
• 19:55
Speaker 7: who broke the color barrier in baseball a couple of
• 19:57
Speaker 7: years before Earl did in basketball. And so I think
• 20:01
Speaker 7: the the highest quality that he had was just, uh,
• 20:06
Speaker 7: you know, his humility. And you know, we went we
• 20:09
Speaker 7: went down and did a documentary after Earl had actually
• 20:13
Speaker 7: went into the hospital and I had been there a
• 20:16
Speaker 7: few years earlier, to his house and spent the night
• 20:19
Speaker 7: with him, just to spend some time with him after
• 20:21
Speaker 7: he had a stroke. But when we went back is
• 20:23
Speaker 7: when I finally realized in his home in Crossfield, Tennessee,
• 20:27
Speaker 7: which is where he retired, there was no picture, book, ball, trophy,
• 20:35
Speaker 7: anything displayed anywhere in his house that ever told you
• 20:40
Speaker 7: he played basketball, let alone that he was in the
• 20:43
Speaker 7: Nase Smith Basketball Hall of Fame and he was the
• 20:46
Speaker 7: first black player in the NBA. UH. He had all
• 20:49
Speaker 7: of his UH and then even the Natesmith Basketball Hall
• 20:52
Speaker 7: of Fame trophy was in a closet in his den,
• 20:56
Speaker 7: in the floor. And so that just speaks volumes of
• 20:59
Speaker 7: him and the way he was and just the human being.
• 21:03
  Speaker 12: That he was.
• 21:04
Speaker 2: Coach, how much work do you and your fellow coaches
• 21:08
Speaker 2: and students even the university, how much work goes into
• 21:11
Speaker 2: making sure all student athletes and for that matter, all
• 21:13
Speaker 2: students at State know about Earl Lloyd.
• 21:17
Speaker 7: Well, for us, I mean every recruiting phone conversation or
• 21:23
Speaker 7: visit or it starts with a Earl Lloyd tutorial, if
• 21:28
Speaker 7: you will. And so I've asked every recruit I've ever
• 21:32
Speaker 7: talked to in my twenty seven years now at West
• 21:35
Speaker 7: Virginia State who was the first black player to ever
• 21:38
Speaker 7: play in NBA. And I've only had one be able
• 21:41
Speaker 7: to come up with his las name, and that's because
• 21:43
Speaker 7: he was from Detroit. So, you know, I start all
• 21:47
Speaker 7: of our conversations with our recruits, and I know our
• 21:50
Speaker 7: admissions office. When they do a tour, they always bring
• 21:53
Speaker 7: him through the Walker Convocation Center where we have the
• 21:56
Speaker 7: statue of Earl Lloyd there, and so I know our
• 22:00
Speaker 7: missions people. They also educate all the kids that come
• 22:04
Speaker 7: on visits to our school about Earl and so and
• 22:07
Speaker 7: I really think, you know that our university and the
• 22:09
Speaker 7: NBA this year especially has really stepped up because this
• 22:13
Speaker 7: year is the seventy five year anniversary of those three gentlemen,
• 22:19
Speaker 7: you know, breaking the color barrier into the NBA, and
• 22:23
Speaker 7: myself and our Vice president Trey Jones. A couple of
• 22:26
Speaker 7: weeks ago, on a Sunday, they had the NBA Pioneer Game,
• 22:30
Speaker 7: which they just started this year, and so they had
• 22:34
Speaker 7: us come up to Boston to watch the Celtics play
• 22:38
Speaker 7: and they honored us as well as Sweetwater. Clifton's family
• 22:43
Speaker 7: member was there and Chuck Cooper I was there as well.
• 22:46
Speaker 7: So the NBA has really done a great job. This
• 22:48
Speaker 7: year being the seventy five year anniversary, and hopefully the
• 22:52
Speaker 7: momentum that we've gained with this and everybody talking about
• 22:55
Speaker 7: it because it's the seventy five year will carry over
• 22:58
Speaker 7: and we can educate more people about what these guys did.
• 23:03
Speaker 2: And I'm happy to hear that you're educating, Coach, not
• 23:06
Speaker 2: only your players and potential recruits, but that the university president,
• 23:11
Speaker 2: Cage and all the others are are trying to impart
• 23:14
Speaker 2: upon their students in general, whether they're an that student
• 23:17
Speaker 2: athlete or not, the importance of Earl Loyd because this
• 23:20
Speaker 2: Earl Lloyd story, And I'll admit, until I met you,
• 23:24
  Speaker 2: I wasn't aware I've heard the name, but I wasn't aware.
• 23:26
Speaker 2: You educated me a lot of the last several years
• 23:29
Speaker 2: on this whole thing, and all of our interviews we've done.
• 23:31
Speaker 2: I think it's a great story. If the man had
• 23:35
Speaker 2: never picked up a basketball, Earl Lloyd would have been
• 23:38
Speaker 2: a major major success story, especially coming out of West
• 23:41
  Speaker 2: Virginia State.
• 23:43
Speaker 7: Absolutely, and you know, and not only you know we
• 23:46
Speaker 7: talk about his basketball. He went on as you and
• 23:49
Speaker 7: I have discussed as well, but he went on to
• 23:52
Speaker 7: work for Chrysler Corporation, become the first black executive for Chrysler,
• 23:57
Speaker 7: and then he goes on to work for Dave Bing
• 23:59
Speaker 7: when he was the mayor of Detroit. And so, I
• 24:03
Speaker 7: mean he did things outside of basketball as well, which
• 24:05
Speaker 7: was very groundbreaking. And he was just such a like
• 24:09
Speaker 7: I say, such a humble, caring, well rounded intellectual guy
• 24:17
Speaker 7: that that the people that you know just read about
• 24:20
Speaker 7: what he did. Yeah, that's that's really good. And and
• 24:24
Speaker 7: you know you can learn his ground very breaking steps
• 24:28
Speaker 7: into the NBA. But for me, you know, I got
• 24:31
Speaker 7: to meet him in two thousand and four when we
• 24:34
Speaker 7: brought him back to retire his jersey, and then I
• 24:37
Speaker 7: got to spend a good ten eleven years with him
• 24:41
Speaker 7: and got to know him on a personal level. And
• 24:43
Speaker 7: I'm just so blessed that I had that opportunity.
• 24:45
Speaker 2: So tomorrow, twelve thirty, there's going to be a ceremony
• 24:47
Speaker 2: at the Walker Convocation Center. You'll be there, President Eric Cage,
• 24:51
Speaker 2: I athleted to director David Hicks. More should be a
• 24:53
Speaker 2: nice ceremony tomorrow, Coach.
• 24:54
Speaker 7: It always is, Yes, it will, And you know tomorrow's
• 24:58
Speaker 7: the day that he away. He was was on the
• 25:01
Speaker 7: twenty sixth and twenty fifteen, so ten year anniversary of that.
• 25:05
Speaker 7: And it's good that, you know, the whole university is
• 25:09
Speaker 7: gathering tomorrow to honor him with a short little ceremony,
• 25:13
Speaker 7: be a couple of speakers, but you know, we always
• 25:16
Speaker 7: like to pay homage to to to Earl and what
• 25:21
Speaker 7: he did for the university and continues to do for me.
• 25:24
Speaker 7: I mean, you know, my opportunity to get to go
• 25:27
Speaker 7: and watch the Celtics play I think they played the Bucks.
• 25:31
Speaker 7: Giannis was out so I didn't get see end play.
• 25:34
Speaker 7: But that was all just because of Earl Lloyd, and
• 25:36
Speaker 7: so I continue to, you know, reap the benefits of
• 25:40
Speaker 7: Earl Lloyd and the friend that he was for me.
• 25:44
Speaker 2: Coach, on a more personal note, before we let you go,
• 25:47
Speaker 2: it's been a rough season emotionally for your team with
• 25:50
Speaker 2: loss of course of a great player. Talk about how
• 25:52
Speaker 2: your team has done getting through all that.
• 25:56
Speaker 7: Yeah, it has been you know, just one that there's
• 26:00
Speaker 7: no playbook four and there's no there's no script for it.
• 26:04
Speaker 7: So you know, I thought I had, you know, pretty
• 26:08
Speaker 7: much faced everything there is in the coaching world in
• 26:11
Speaker 7: twenty six years of being the head coach, and uh,
• 26:14
Speaker 7: this one certainly is one that I don't wish upon anybody.
• 26:19
Speaker 7: And and not only you know with this is passing
• 26:21
Speaker 7: and and the struggles that we had from that, but
• 26:24
Speaker 7: we've had multiple injuries outside of that as well, and
• 26:28
  Speaker 7: so it's it's it's been a struggle. We've put it
• 26:31
Speaker 7: together here a little bit the last couple of weeks
• 26:33
Speaker 7: and we've won three out of four and started to
• 26:35
Speaker 7: play a little bit better and and so hopefully, you know,
• 26:39
Speaker 7: we can close out the season this week. We play
• 26:42
Speaker 7: at Concord tonight and then we have Charleston at home
• 26:44
Speaker 7: on Saturday, and then then go into our tournament. And
• 26:47
Speaker 7: so it has been a struggle. I really commend our
• 26:51
Speaker 7: players for, you know, then then sticking to it and
• 26:54
Speaker 7: and and staying together and and sticking through the grind.
• 26:57
Speaker 7: And so we just hope we can finish out the
• 27:00
  Speaker 7: season strong.
• 27:01
Speaker 2: Coach Brian Poor, West Virginia Statement's basketball coach. It's always
• 27:04
Speaker 2: a pleasure to have you on the show to talk
• 27:06
Speaker 2: about Earl Lloyd and talk about anything else. Anytime you
• 27:09
Speaker 2: and I can get together, it's always a good time.
• 27:10
Speaker 2: I appreciate you being here, sir. Thanks a lot, and
• 27:13
Speaker 2: thanks for what you and the in the university continue

Speaker 2: we'll talk to him comeing up on the show tomorrow.
• 32:32
Speaker 2: All right, So before we get to say to the union,
• 32:35
Speaker 2: something a little personal for me. And if you follow
• 32:39
Speaker 2: me on social media Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and
• 32:41
Speaker 2: at Dave A seventy one x and if you don't,
• 32:43
Speaker 2: well you should be. Did a little video about this
• 32:48
Speaker 2: last night. And let me back up a bit, just
• 32:54
Speaker 2: kind of gets you up here. About two years ago
• 32:58
Speaker 2: I went for a simple medical check up and they
• 33:02
Speaker 2: were concerned at that time about my blood work, you know,
• 33:04
Speaker 2: particularly PSA level, and of course I did what most
• 33:08
Speaker 2: men do. I said thank you and ignored their warnings
• 33:11
Speaker 2: and left. Then I went back like six months later
• 33:16
Speaker 2: for you know, check up, and the doctor says, well,
• 33:19
Speaker 2: did you ever get those PSA?
• 33:20
  Speaker 6: No?
• 33:21
Speaker 2: No, I didn't. And so then I went back again
• 33:25
Speaker 2: and my family doctor, of which I didn't even have
• 33:28
Speaker 2: a family doctor this time two years ago, welcome to
• 33:30
Speaker 2: you know, being in your mid fifties. And I walked
• 33:33
Speaker 2: back and he said, we're going to send to you,
• 33:34
Speaker 2: you know, to do some more blood work. And when
• 33:36
Speaker 2: I went back, and this was in the fall of
• 33:38
Speaker 2: last year, twenty twenty five, he said, you know, your
• 33:41
Speaker 2: PSA levels have risen dramatically since the previous year and
• 33:47
Speaker 2: basically said, you have got to take this seriously and
• 33:49
Speaker 2: address this. And that began a series of scans and biopsies.
• 33:54
Speaker 2: You've been through this, you know what I'm talking about.
• 33:56
Speaker 2: MRIs poke prod and so on and so forth. And
• 33:59
Speaker 2: they they told me last month, which I have been
• 34:02
Speaker 2: very open about on social media and on the air.
• 34:04
Speaker 2: They told me last month I have prostate cancer. And
• 34:06
Speaker 2: so I had an appointment with one of the doctors yesterday.
• 34:11
Speaker 2: And if you can find good news in bad news,
• 34:17
Speaker 2: I already knew that I had prostate cancer, but I
• 34:20
Speaker 2: was very relieved to find out that the cancer had
• 34:23
Speaker 2: not spread. They were concerned about the not so much
• 34:29
Speaker 2: the number that I was given on the Gleason score.
• 34:35
Speaker 2: I'll trust me, I've learned way too much about it.
• 34:37
Speaker 2: And it has nothing to do with Jackie Gleason, by
• 34:38
Speaker 2: the way. I found that out. And the PSA level
• 34:41
Speaker 2: so on and so forth I found all this out.
• 34:43
Speaker 2: They told me it wasn't how high the number was,
• 34:48
Speaker 2: it was that it was growing so rapidly, and they said,
• 34:52
Speaker 2: we got to get this checked out to make sure
• 34:53
Speaker 2: it's not spreading, because it's on the path to spread everywhere.
• 34:58
Speaker 2: And luckily found out yesterday that has not been the case.
• 35:03
Speaker 2: So I said, it's about the best good news I
• 35:06
Speaker 2: could get in the midst of bad news.
• 35:09
  Speaker 1: You know.
• 35:09
Speaker 2: They told me I have cancer, but it's not spread.
• 35:13
Speaker 2: And I've learned way too much about prostates in the
• 35:15
Speaker 2: last couple of months. To be quite honest with you,
• 35:17
Speaker 2: I will tell you I have zero symptoms of anything.
• 35:20
Speaker 2: I don't feel badly at all. I just have cancer.
• 35:23
Speaker 2: So now the treatments begin, and at some point over
• 35:26
Speaker 2: the next couple of weeks, I'll start radiation treatments somewhere
• 35:31
Speaker 2: between five to ten don't know. I don't know exactly
• 35:35
Speaker 2: how many yet, it all depends. All outpatient stuff. Maybe
• 35:40
Speaker 2: last fifteen minutes or so, and I'm done. I'll do
• 35:43
Speaker 2: that once or twice a week and then evaluate from there.
• 35:48
Speaker 2: Side effects, Well, everyone is different. I'm hanging my hat
• 35:53
Speaker 2: on the fact that in the limited amount of medical
• 35:55
Speaker 2: issues I've been lucky not to go through hardly anything
• 35:59
Speaker 2: in my life. You know, I've had doctors that have
• 36:02
Speaker 2: told me I'm the perfect patient because I'm not allergic
• 36:04
Speaker 2: to anything. I generally speaking medicines, if I take them
• 36:07
Speaker 2: when I do, which is not often do what they're
• 36:10
Speaker 2: supposed to do. I have the most common blood type
• 36:13
Speaker 2: that there is, so you kind of get where I'm
• 36:15
Speaker 2: going now. They do tell me I'm going to be tired,
• 36:19
Speaker 2: maybe hot flash, so basically I'm going to be going
• 36:22
Speaker 2: through menopause. So if I am away from here, you'll
• 36:28
Speaker 2: know why. And I'm the type of guy who does
• 36:31
Speaker 2: not believe in taking time off, you know, for anything.
• 36:34
Speaker 2: In fact, I had to have a sit down yesterday
• 36:38
Speaker 2: with our HR department here to learn how much time
• 36:40
Speaker 2: I had off because I literally did not know. I mean,
• 36:43
Speaker 2: I take a few days in the spring. My wife
• 36:45
Speaker 2: and I used to do a beach trip somewhere. That's
• 36:47
Speaker 2: pretty much it. And I had to sit down with
• 36:50
Speaker 2: our HR department, which anytime I'm called to the HR department,
• 36:53
Speaker 2: it's usually for something else is Ryan will tell you.
• 36:56
Speaker 2: So I sat down and I said, how much time
• 36:59
Speaker 2: do I even get off? Because I had I had
• 37:01
Speaker 2: no idea. I get that from my late father. I mean,
• 37:04
  Speaker 2: I just I just don't. I don't see what I
• 37:06
Speaker 2: do here is work to be honest with you, So
• 37:08
  Speaker 2: I don't. I don't really want to be away, but
• 37:10
Speaker 2: I'm gonna I'm gonna do better on that promise my wife.
• 37:12
Speaker 2: I'm actually gonna do better at that. So I just
• 37:14
Speaker 2: wanted to get out there. Good bad news. Cancer hasn't spread.
• 37:17
Speaker 2: Something like a ninety six percent survival rate in prostate cancer,
• 37:21
Speaker 2: one of the better cancers. You know, if you're gonna
• 37:24
Speaker 2: get cancer, one of the better ones to get. I
• 37:26
Speaker 2: guess I'll I'll keep you up. But one thing that
• 37:29
Speaker 2: you can be assured of is that one way or
• 37:30
Speaker 2: the other, I'm gonna continue to make fun of it
• 37:33
Speaker 2: because that's what I do. And had they told me
• 37:35
Speaker 2: yesterday you know this is spread, guess what I would
• 37:39
Speaker 2: have done. I would have made fun of it, because
• 37:42
  Speaker 2: that's what I do. It's a sickness sixteen minutes away
• 37:45
Speaker 2: from Tamaday Island show on five ad Line, brought to
• 37:47
Speaker 2: you part by your hometown baseball team, The Charles the
• 37:49
Speaker 2: Dirty Birds. Maybe one a time. Now we're already thinking
• 37:51
Speaker 2: about baseball go Mark Ballpark. Now'd be a good time
• 37:54
Speaker 2: to secure your season tickets merchandise more at dirty Birds
• 37:56
Speaker 2: Baseball dot com. So I want to ask you about
• 38:01
Speaker 2: my urine here, Ryan, Dave. Do do you pee every
• 38:05
Speaker 2: ninety minutes or two hours at night?
• 38:07
  Speaker 13: No?
• 38:07
  Speaker 2: I don't do either. I go to bed and I
• 38:09
Speaker 2: wake up four thirty or five and get up. I
• 38:12
Speaker 2: don't no issues in that department whatsoever. Never have had
• 38:16
Speaker 2: any issue in that department. All right, So State of
• 38:20
Speaker 2: the Union last night, President awarded two purple hearts last
• 38:23
Speaker 2: night's start There start Positive, one to Air National Guard
• 38:26
Speaker 2: staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, who, as expected, was in attendance
• 38:32
Speaker 2: last night with his family. Also another awarded posthumously to
• 38:36
Speaker 2: Army National Guard specialist Sarah Beckstrom. President talked about five
• 38:40
Speaker 2: minutes or so on that it's a lead story this
• 38:43
Speaker 2: morning wv Metronews dot com, and we're going to dive
• 38:46
Speaker 2: more into that speech, play a little audio from it
• 38:48
Speaker 2: at some point. I'm sure you've heard it a lot
• 38:50
Speaker 2: of but we're going to play more as it pertains
• 38:52
Speaker 2: to the guardsman coming up on midday to day. As
• 38:56
Speaker 2: for the rest of the speech, one hour and forty
• 38:59
Speaker 2: eight minutes total, longest State of the Union speech in history.
• 39:04
Speaker 2: I asked on midday yesterday for people to give me
• 39:06
Speaker 2: the over under, and I don't remember what I said.
• 39:08
Speaker 2: I should have wrote it down. I think I said
• 39:11
Speaker 2: like an hour fifty two or something random like that.
• 39:13
Speaker 2: So if that's what I said, which I think I did,
• 39:15
Speaker 2: I was pretty close. President primarily told the story of
• 39:19
Speaker 2: America's great turnaround quote hottest country in the world end quote.
• 39:24
Speaker 2: He told Democrats they should be ashamed of themselves for
• 39:27
Speaker 2: not standing up when he said, quote the first duty
• 39:30
Speaker 2: of the American government is to protect American citizens, not
• 39:33
Speaker 2: illegal aliens end quote. Republicans stood, many Democrats did not.
• 39:39
Speaker 2: He talked about Iran, talked about tariffs, He mocked the
• 39:43
Speaker 2: Democrats on affordability, continued to talk about voter fraud. At
• 39:48
Speaker 2: one point, Representative Al Green of Texas escorted out for
• 39:51
Speaker 2: holding up a black people aren't apes sign etc. Etc.
• 39:58
Speaker 2: And so so pretty much what everybody expected it would be.
• 40:06
Speaker 2: So let's get to some text, because I knew we
• 40:09
Speaker 2: would have text, says Trump's speech last night. Again, prusse
• 40:15
Speaker 2: he's a member and good studying of the Anassis Club,
• 40:18
Speaker 2: says a texture text says, Dave, I saw yesterday another
• 40:23
Speaker 2: mine is laying off minors. That happened the last time
• 40:26
Speaker 2: Trump put tariffs in other countries. Now Western na coal
• 40:28
Speaker 2: is suffering from bad trade agreements. Don't blame nobody but Trump,
• 40:32
Speaker 2: says a texture texas Daved Trump talked about what he's done,
• 40:35
Speaker 2: higher cost of goods and food, Arresting legal citizens with
• 40:38
Speaker 2: no due process, going on people's home, going in people's
• 40:41
Speaker 2: homes without warrants, handcuffing children, slamming old women to the ground.
• 40:44
Speaker 2: Now he says, you don't have the right to bear arms.
• 40:47
Speaker 2: It's up to him, says a texture Tex says, how
• 40:55
Speaker 2: many Democrats refuse to stand in memory in honor of
• 41:00
Speaker 2: the grieving mother, And I'm going to butcher the name
• 41:04
Speaker 2: Erana Zirtuska and their grieving mother had the audacity to
