- 0:04[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks so much for being here Tuesday, May 19th.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_00]: Shout out to my little bro, Happy Birthday.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: Right now, in honor of a different birthday.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: Travis Hunter's birthday, which was yesterday.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: May 18th.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: Travis Hunter.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_00]: Happy belated birthday.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_00]: Turn 23 years old.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_00]: very young man.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: We're talking Jaguar's past defense.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: Jaguar's past coverage today.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited to get into it.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: I really am, because I think that there is a, you know, what we saw last from the Jaguar's past defense and past coverage was the game against the bills, where
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: quick hitting throats, and that left a bad taste in Jaguar's fans' mouths, and you think about that, and then you think about just kind of how inconsistent the coverage was at the beginning of the year at times, and you're left thinking like, maybe this isn't an elite past coverage group, but I think that they have a chance to be.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think they have a chance to be an elite defense and an elite football team.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're a legitimate Super Bowl contender based on what they have on paper, talent-wise, and their coaching.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: A strongly feel that way.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you, look across the board and you've got reason to believe in the past game, in the run game, in the run defense and the past coverage and obviously the special team.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: it's all there for me and again this one this show is specifically about the past coverage so I'm excited to get into it I really am obviously Travis Hunter is a big key to all of this on both sides of the ball for the Jack Wars so we're gonna go ahead and talk about that again happy belated birthday two Travis Hunter turned in 23 years old

- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: And I'll also hit that high button, helps out a ton.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: So I just want to go back and revisit what happened at the end of last year.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: Something I was complaining about, pretty consistently.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: They were giving up too much quick game through the first nine games of the regular season, right?
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: That last game against the Texans was like, the game where it kind of clicked and they started figuring things out and then they'd beat the brakes off the charges the next week.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: But after that point, so the final eight regular season games and then even including the loss against the bills and the playoffs,
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: They allowed opposing offenses to complete 209 of 329 passes for 1,734 yards, 5 touchdowns, 10 interceptions.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: That's 63.5 completion percentage, which in this day and age, not very good.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: 192 yards per game through the air.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: 5 touchdowns, 10 interceptions.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: a touchdown to intercept from an issue of one to two, right?
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: Like, those numbers are elite.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_00]: And now, contextually, we have to be honest here, right?
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: There were games that they played during that stretch that were against bad football teams.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: The jets had a bad football team.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: The cults.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: Daniel Jones only played for a little bit of the first game.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: They played against Philip Rivers in the second game.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: The Titans, we're not a good football team last year, right?
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: So like, there is that to it as well, but there was also good teams in that stretch.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: Again, the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers, Buffalo Bills.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not like it was all bad teams there.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: There was some good teams, some bad teams, and
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: That's the NFL.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_00]: That is the NFL regular season.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna play some good teams.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna play some bad teams.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna play some good offenses.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna play some bad offenses.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: When you look at the Jaguar's current schedule, there's plenty of questionable offenses on it for 2026.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_00]: Start off with the Cleveland Browns.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: Is that a questionable offense?
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: I would say so, or there's some good pieces, yes.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: But they're completely rebuilt.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: They're offensive line.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: The quarterback situation ain't pretty.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: There's questions there.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: The Texans, I still think there's some question marks with that offense.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_00]: You look at the Colts, there's still some question marks with that offense, right?
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: The Titans, there's still some question marks with that offense.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: The entire AFC South, the teams they play six times, have question marks on offense.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: Pittsburgh Steelers, that's not a great offense last time I checked.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: New York Giants, that's not a great offense last time I checked.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: So throughout this, and things can change, but throughout this schedule on paper, there's gonna be games where they play against bad offenses.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: That's true.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: There's also gonna be games in which they play against good offenses.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: And to me, the Jack Wars, on their Anthony Campanile, they became a borderline, elite regular season, a regular season defense against both the run, which they were, and that they carried that into the playoffs.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: and the past.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: The problem for me was they could not consistently enough against an elite quarterback, prevent them dicing them up with quick game.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: And you can say it's borderline quick game.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: It was like 1.9 seconds to 2.2 seconds.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: The throws in which opposing quarterbacks were getting the ball out that quickly were like insanely efficient, not from a yards per attempt standpoint but from a completion percentage standpoint.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: And if it's third down and you've done a good job against the run on the first two downs, it's probably third and six, third and seven.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: If it's easy to complete that, you're giving up drafts.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_00]: You're giving up first downs, right?
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: So my biggest thing here is how did the Jag war is improved in that regard?
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you subtract Greg Newsom, who I think can play better than he did last year.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: I've said that a lot, but let's just be honest, his quarterback rating allowed,
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: When targeted, as a Jacksonville Jaguar in 2025, was 116.2, subtract Greg Newsom, who's now in New York, John, by the way.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: They'll see him this year.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_00]: Insert, Travis Hunter, and you're not subtracting Buster Brown, you kept him around, right?
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: That was a big deal.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: Travis Hunter, 78.8, pass the rating aloud.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: That number would look a lot better if that passenger France, a phantom passenger France had not been called against this and had he bingles in week two.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: If some butts, yeah, whatever, we can go there.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: Still, 78.8 as compared to 116.2.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: And that's just the number.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like, if you watch the two guys play football, it's not close.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: You're inserting Travis Hunter into that CB1 role.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: You still have Buster Brown as CB2.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: You still have Debt with Jarring Jones and Jordan Lewis.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: And they brought Christian Braswell back for a reason, right?
- 7:35[SPEAKER_00]: They were also able to get a couple really interesting undrafted for agents.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: They brought Keith Taylor back.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_00]: I love Devon Marshall, who they got an undrafted free agency.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's going to make the team.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: And I think he has a chance to be a key depth player during the course of his rookie, I mean, I guess rookie contract for an undrafted free agent.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: I like three years or something.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: But this side's the point.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_00]: We're getting deep in the weeds here.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: We're talking about that.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: The point is, I think you drop Travis Hunt and yeah, three-year contract.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: Non-garrantied.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: His guaranteed salary is 150,000 for 2026.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_00]: Beyond that, there's no guarantees.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_00]: But Travis Hunter, dropping in in that same spot, I think, is huge because Travis Hunter's ability
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: to bait quarterbacks, to read and react, to close.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: Like, so, so much of the problem with the Jaguar is past defense last year.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: And these games where they were playing against a really good quarterback, or a quarterback who at least understood how to kind of beat them with the quick game stuff, it was, okay, you're playing off coverage, which they're gonna keep playing off coverage.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: I hate to tell you all this, that's gonna happen.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: The difference is,
- 9:01[SPEAKER_00]: player like Travis Hunter in off coverage can click and close so fast with so much confidence that it's going to make the quarterback the opposing quarterback think about it a little bit more.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_00]: Then they were thinking about it when targeting Greg Jones and those, I mean, Greg knew something not Greg Jones.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: I apologize Greg Jones, absolutely love your game man.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: What a beast he
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: against the bills.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_00]: He was targeted five times in primary coverage.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_00]: He allowed five completions, 11.8 yards per reception.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: You cannot have a starting outside cornerback, not denying
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: anything like he gave it all it was all there for Josh Allen and a lot of it again is quick game where you're doing like a comeback route a quick out route a curl things of that nature slam and he just can't do anything about it because that's not his game he's more of a man coverage guy get up on the line of skirmish play physical match all that stuff he wasn't asked to do that as much here and I think he struggled because of that but I think Travis
- 10:20[SPEAKER_00]: and you have a guy who can do everything at the cornerback position.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: And it wasn't just against the bills where new some struggled.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_00]: So in week 18, or not week 18, excuse me, but in week 15 and week 16, again, he allowed 100% of the passes his way completed.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_00]: in his first game with the Jaguars, which is only one target, he allowed 100% and then in week 10 against the Texans, he allowed seven completions on eight targets in primary coverage for 74 yards.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he was a week link for the Jaguars last year.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_00]: and coverage.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: And now, that week link is replaced with Travis Hunter, the player who not only showed he can do it as a rookie and limited time, but also was vitally viewed as like one of the best cornerback prospects ever.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: You also have a year of building and understanding relationships, chemistry, players understanding Anthony Camponele's defense, Anthony Camponele understanding his players a little bit more and also inserting a rising star passing game coordinator and Matthew Arujo, who isn't just a random addition, he has coach with Anthony Camponele and I think there's a good understanding there of how they're going to try to level up.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_00]: Again, I think they could have one of the best evens in NFL against both the run, which we talked about last week.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: That's a super power.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to have one of the best run defenses in football, if not the best.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I think they could also have one of the best past defenses in football.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_00]: As evidence by what they did down the stretch, and by the fact that they upgraded their coaching, they believe they upgraded CB1 in a big way from Craig News and to Travis Hunter.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're illegitimate Superbowl contender.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: I really do, at this point, and
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: The one thing I look at this roster and I'm still like, I do wish there was more.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's the third pass-rusher, but they do believe in the guys they have and there's still the ability to add to that spot if they need to, if they feel they need to, at any point in the off season or even during the season.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_00]: So, they've got plenty of trade ammunition if somebody ends up being available via trade, if they need to go that route during the season or if they want to pick up someone who's a veteran,
- 12:50[SPEAKER_00]: that's a free agent right now.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_00]: There's still a lot of guys that I think could help, but they believe in Strigo, B.J.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: Green, they went and got Wesley Williams who they like.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_00]: They also drafted zactor for you as a lot of potential.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_00]: So they've got guys that they like, are they, are they good enough?
- 13:08[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know, but even with that one minor, in my opinion, question mark on the roster,
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: I feel really solid about everything else.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: I'm fired up for it.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: Let me know how you're feeling in the comment section below.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_00]: If you enjoy the content, please like and subscribe.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: Y'all have a good one.
