Latest / Coaches Corner / Luke Murray - Postgame Marquette
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Join now by look Maria's court, Sizlawski's win for the
- 0:03Speaker 1: tenth straight time, stay unbeaten in the Big East. Luke
- 0:06Speaker 1: this one. You know, it's kind of a grinder the
- 0:08Speaker 1: way Marquette plays. Hard to shake him. Really, what was
- 0:12Speaker 1: your overall assessment as you look back already at this thing.
- 0:16Speaker 2: You know, I think we're pretty disappointed with the way
- 0:19Speaker 2: that we came out to start the game. We just
- 0:21Speaker 2: didn't play with a whole lot of energy or enthusiasm
- 0:24Speaker 2: the first two wars, probably the first eight minutes of
- 0:27Speaker 2: the game. I thought a couple of guys off the
- 0:30Speaker 2: bench gave us a good lift. And you know, honestly,
- 0:32Speaker 2: I think we benefited from some cold shooting from Marquette.
- 0:35Speaker 2: You know, I thought they had some pretty clean looks
- 0:36Speaker 2: at the first half at times, and you know, we
- 0:38Speaker 2: were able to get stops as a result of the
- 0:40Speaker 2: missing shots and get some you know, opportunities in transition.
- 0:43Speaker 2: But all in all, not super pleased with today.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Yeah, you got a tough schedule coming up. All the
- 0:50Speaker 1: quality teams in the Big East right now ahead of you. Right,
- 0:53Speaker 1: You've got Billanova, you got Saint John's coming up. Seaton
- 0:55Speaker 1: Hall has been on a roll. So as you look
- 0:58Speaker 1: at this thing and and kind of assess what needs
- 1:01Speaker 1: to happen next, What do you think you're gonna go
- 1:04Speaker 1: back to practice with the in the coming days.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I mean, you know, Providence is a really
- 1:08Speaker 2: good team obviously. You know, playing them at their place
- 1:11Speaker 2: is always a challenge. You know, they're coming off a
- 1:13Speaker 2: great win at the Garden the other day, so we're
- 1:16Speaker 2: gonna have to be sharper. You know. I thought there
- 1:18Speaker 2: were some good things about our defensive commitment level, but
- 1:21Speaker 2: like I said, I think without seeing the tape, it
- 1:24Speaker 2: felt like there were probably too many clean looks that
- 1:26Speaker 2: we got to make sure we do a better job
- 1:28Speaker 2: of cleaning up, because our defense is really has been
- 1:30Speaker 2: what's led us throughout the majority of the year. I
- 1:33Speaker 2: really thought we had made some strides offensively last time
- 1:36Speaker 2: out in the Xavier game, and you know, some of
- 1:39Speaker 2: it may just be sort of a cold shooting day.
- 1:41Speaker 2: You know, shooting variants kind of plays into it a
- 1:43Speaker 2: little bit with guys like Alex you know, going two
- 1:46Speaker 2: for eleven, oho for five from three, brailing three for ten,
- 1:48Speaker 2: one for seven from three. Obviously they're far better shooters
- 1:51Speaker 2: than that, but We're gonna have to do a good
- 1:53Speaker 2: job of cleaning some things up offensively because Providence, you know,
- 1:58Speaker 2: again they're playing committed basketball right now. And then on
- 2:00Speaker 2: the defensive end, they got a really talented group. You know,
- 2:03Speaker 2: they have one of the most talented rosters in the conference.
- 2:05Speaker 2: So we're gonna have to be ready to go Wednesday night.
- 2:07Speaker 1: For sure. Yeah, there are guys who can put it
- 2:09Speaker 1: in the bucket, that's for sure. Rebounding the ball in
- 2:12Speaker 1: the last five games that you've been plus double digits
- 2:15Speaker 1: each time, what's going into that and how important is
- 2:18Speaker 1: that going forward?
- 2:19Speaker 2: It's huge. It's huge. I mean I thought today, especially
- 2:23Speaker 2: in the second half, it kind of bulloied us. You know,
- 2:24Speaker 2: we've made a much greater effort on the on the glass,
- 2:27Speaker 2: in particular on the offensive glass. You know, that's not
- 2:29Speaker 2: a strength of Marquette's team. Defensive rebounding just kind of
- 2:33Speaker 2: as a result of the size that they have, you know,
- 2:35Speaker 2: But a guy like Terris Reid, for example, he was
- 2:37Speaker 2: the second best offensive rebounder in the country last year,
- 2:41Speaker 2: and this year his offensive rebounding numbers are way down,
- 2:44Speaker 2: you know, so for him to be able to be
- 2:45Speaker 2: a force on the offensive glass, get himself easy baskets,
- 2:48Speaker 2: draw fouls on the opposing big guys is huge. I
- 2:51Speaker 2: thought Eric did a great job on the glass. Some
- 2:53Speaker 2: of our guards, guys like Solo did a really good job.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Braylan got some defensive rebound. So it's a huge thing.
- 2:58Speaker 2: You know, it's a huge thing for us to finish
- 3:01Speaker 2: possessions and then give ourselves second opportunities on.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Offense and Silas Demri hadn't been scoring an awful lot
- 3:06Speaker 1: in the last couple of weeks, but in twenty one
- 3:08Speaker 1: minutes four for five he made three from three. That's
- 3:12Speaker 1: important too, because you don't want defenses slopping off him
- 3:16Speaker 1: and saying, all right, we don't have to worry about
- 3:17Speaker 1: him scoring.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. I mean it's huge. I mean, unfortunately,
- 3:20Speaker 2: he's been unable to stay out of foul trouble in
- 3:23Speaker 2: a lot of recent games, and I think that's cut
- 3:25Speaker 2: into his opportunity. You know, today was another example of
- 3:27Speaker 2: that where he was in foul trouble and you know,
- 3:30Speaker 2: it only allows him to play twenty one minutes. But
- 3:32Speaker 2: I did think he was good when he was in there.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I really thought he played well, and I think it's
- 3:36Speaker 2: important like you said, Mike, for him to knock down
- 3:38Speaker 2: those three threes, you know, even just the optics of it,
- 3:41Speaker 2: If you're the opposing coach and you're looking at the
- 3:43Speaker 2: stat sheet and you see that his percentage is a
- 3:45Speaker 2: little bit better than it was coming into this game,
- 3:48Speaker 2: you know, it gives you a little bit of pause
- 3:49Speaker 2: in terms of how you want to defend him. And
- 3:51Speaker 2: I think the confidence that that Silas gains from knocking
- 3:54Speaker 2: down those shots is big as well.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Yeah, and finally, you don't have Jadon Ross in there
- 3:58Speaker 1: the last couple of games, but you know, Jalen Stewart
- 4:01Speaker 1: continues to do a lot of little things. Well, right,
- 4:03Speaker 1: three for six, he gets six points, he gets three assists.
- 4:06Speaker 1: He's been lighting it up a little bit with some
- 4:08Speaker 1: of these spectacular plays. It gets the crowd into it,
- 4:11Speaker 1: and I think that's a real value.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I totally agree. You know, Coach Hurley singled him
- 4:16Speaker 2: out in the postgame press conference. You know, Jalen, as
- 4:19Speaker 2: I think has been talked about before, is one of
- 4:22Speaker 2: the most selfless guys that you could ever have in
- 4:24Speaker 2: your program. And you know, he really is willing to
- 4:28Speaker 2: sacrifice for the betterment of the group. But I thought today,
- 4:30Speaker 2: on a day when it was sort of muted in here,
- 4:32Speaker 2: to be honest, I thought he really gave us a jolt.
- 4:36Speaker 2: He is our If he's not our best, he's one
- 4:39Speaker 2: of our best passers. He does a really good job
- 4:41Speaker 2: of seeing our high low actions and finding those big guys.
- 4:44Speaker 2: And he made some explosive plays around the basket as well.
- 4:47Speaker 2: So it couldn't happen to a better guy. And you know,
- 4:50Speaker 2: we're certainly hoping for more of that down down the
- 4:52Speaker 2: line here.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Yeah, three assists, a couple of steals too for Jalen Stewart.
- 4:55Speaker 1: All right, Luke, we appreciate it. That's Luke Murray. We'll
- 4:58Speaker 1: see you next week. It's on the road.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Let's go, Mike,
