Latest / The Catholic Current / LTACL: Discerning All Cardinals? (Fr. Robert McTeigue, S.J.)
Transcript
- 0:00Hey, do you remember recently I had a broadcast where I talked about how to
- 0:03help certain cardinals? I suggested that they needed better ghostwriters,
- 0:08ghostwriters who would not put embarrassing words in their mouth.
- 0:11And I also suggested the cardinals might need some gentle
- 0:15fraternal correction by their peers, by their brother cardinals. Well,
- 0:19believe it or not, I think I've underestimated the situation. It's actually
- 0:24worse than I thought. What do I mean by that?
- 0:27Stay with me, I got a story to tell. Hi, I'm Jesuit Father Robert
- 0:30McTaggart, your host every day at the Catholic Coming to you from the Station of
- 0:34the Cross Catholic Media Network. Let's take a closer look. Glad you're here.
- 0:38As we speak, there's a meeting taking place in Rome marking the
- 0:4110th anniversary of the document Amoris Laetitia,
- 0:45and there's a lot of talking and a lot of listening and a lot of
- 0:49dialogue, and it all seems to be focusing around statements regarding
- 0:52marriage and family and sexuality.
- 0:56And of course, accompaniment. Well,
- 0:59recently, some members of the senior Catholic cadre of the People
- 1:03Who Should Really Know Better Club made some statements that I found to
- 1:07be, shall we say, a cause for wonder.
- 1:11For example, we were told that new patterns of partnering
- 1:15and cohabitation are emerging, and these new patterns
- 1:19should be occasions of pastoral discernment
- 1:22and not ready-made answers, so the Church
- 1:25may learn how to change. Well, that got me thinking.
- 1:29All right, let's discern.
- 1:32Let's, let's do that right now. Uh, let's discern
- 1:36about patterns of partnering. For example, there are patterns of
- 1:40partnering that result in the begetting of children.
- 1:44There are other very different patterns of partnering that
- 1:49result in sexually transmitted diarrhea not easily treatable by modern
- 1:53medicine. Now let's discern. Which pattern
- 1:57of partnering do you think was willed by God?
- 2:02See, discernment doesn't have to be all that hard.
- 2:05And when we talk about avoiding ready-made answers,
- 2:09okay, let us grant that for now. But what about,
- 2:13say, revealed answers? Answers revealed
- 2:17by God in sacred scriptures from the Book of Genesis
- 2:21to the Book of Revelation, God has a lot
- 2:24to say, a lot of very specific things to say
- 2:29about marriage and patterns of partnering.
- 2:33Will these new pastoral discernments in response to emerging
- 2:37patterns include any references to sacred
- 2:41scripture? If not, why not?
- 2:45And these new pastoral discernments that will lead to accompaniment,
- 2:48of course, followed by the church changing.
- 2:53Would these changes be recommended or recognized by
- 2:58any saint? I'm going to say let's get saints who
- 3:01have strong opinions about these things. Let's start with, I don't
- 3:05know, just spitballing here. How about St. Thomas More and St.
- 3:08Maria Goretti? Would any of the pastoral discernment that is being recommended
- 3:13for the changes in the church regarding patterns of partnering would
- 3:17they be recognized and endorsed peacefully by Saint
- 3:22Thomas More and Saint Maria Goretti? And if not,
- 3:26why not? Now you can see there is a
- 3:30whole lot of work to be done. We really need everybody
- 3:34involved, all the, all the baptized.
- 3:37Get ready for a great big dose of synodal co-responsibility.
- 3:42So here's my suggestion. I want to start a program called
- 3:46Clergy and Laity Leery of Ungrounded
- 3:50Theology. And so whenever you hear a pastoral
- 3:55discernment that seems to be ungrounded in Scripture and tradition
- 3:58and natural law, just call out and say, hey,
- 4:02what's that discernment grounded upon?
- 4:05I think that could be a useful exercise. Let me know what you
- 4:09think in the comment section below. Or write me please at thestationofthecross.com/askfather.
- 4:16Meanwhile, think on these things today, take them to prayer, and talk about
- 4:20it with those you love. Go in peace, and please do pray for me,
- 4:24for I am a sinner.
