- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Hi, I'm Kate Dreston and welcome to Kate’s Devotional Podcast.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: I drop my podcast every Wednesday.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: It's always a five minute or less devotional to bring you encouragement as we try to live our lives according to the Bible.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I'm so glad you're here.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Today we're going to talk about feelings.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: You know, God created us with the ability to have a wide range of feelings.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: What are some of the most common feelings?
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Well, there's happiness, sadness, frustration, fear, anger, and loneliness.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: All of these are important.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine if God created us without any feelings?
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Doesn't sound like much fun, sounds boring to me.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: All those emotions play a part in our personalities.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: But as you know, feelings have a downside.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: The way we feel can be all over the place sometimes.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: The way we feel at any particular moment can be deceiving and can't always be trusted.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: So did you know the Bible speaks a lot about it?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: So here's a verse in Proverbs 3, verse 5, and I'm reading out the New King James Version.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: It says, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: I think we can compare feelings to the wind.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: They can come from all directions.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: They can change quickly.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: They can blow softly or they can come with a hurricane force, right?
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Emotions can cause a lot of uncertainty in our hearts.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to read you some statements that reflect how we feel a lot of the time.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: See if you have ever thought this way.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Okay, first one.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: I feel like God has abandoned me and doesn't care about what I'm going through.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Now I'd say that's a pretty common feeling, so let's check that against Scripture.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: The Bible actually tells us God does not abandon us.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: He cares about us and we are valuable to Him.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: So here's just one verse that supports that.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: It's in Matthew 10:30-31.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: It says, But the very hairs on your head are all numbered.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Do not fear, therefore.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: You are of more value than many sparrows.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Now obviously he cares a lot about us if he has the very hairs on our head all numbered.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Okay, here's another one.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Let's see if this sounds familiar.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: If God really cared about me, he wouldn't give me so many problems at once.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Well, here's a Bible verse that contradicts that feeling.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: It's found in James 1 verses 2 and 3.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: It says, My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: So the Bible tells us God actually uses our trials for our good.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: And he not only cares about all your problems, but he's using them.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: All right, how about this one?
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: How can a loving God allow so much suffering in my life?
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And the Bible gives us the answer to this question too.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Genesis 3 tells us God created a perfect world.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And when sin entered it, suffering became a part of everyone's life.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: The Apostle Paul, he was dealing with a lot of physical suffering and he actually pleaded with God to take it away, his physical problem.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: The Bible doesn't tell us what it is, but not only one time he did that, he pleaded with God to take it away three different times.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: And God never answered that prayer.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And I'll read that verse in 2 Corinthians 12 9.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: It says, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: And then Paul wrote in the last half of that verse, he says, Friends, we need to test our feelings against Scripture.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: If they match up, we can trust the way we feel and make decisions based on that.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: But our feelings can change so fast.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: But you know, God never does.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: He is our rock.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: The truth of the Bible should be the solid foundation on which we base all of our decisions.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: And I'll end with one last verse about not trusting ourselves and the way we feel.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: It's found in Proverbs 28:26, and it says, Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: If you are having doubts about something or feel anxious about something, make sure you know what the Bible has to say about it.
