- 0:00Welcome to Doctor Turned Health Coach Podcast. My name is Dr.
- 0:04Ashori, and one of the topics that I always discuss in depth with every one
- 0:13of my clients is their definition of health,
- 0:16especially because my practice is centered around healthy aging.
- 0:22In a previous podcast episode, I talked about the difference between healthy aging and longevity.
- 0:30Now, what is the field of longevity? What claims does it make and what promises can it make us?
- 0:38The best longevity experts, those who are vetted experts, who are genuine,
- 0:44who do the research, who stand behind their work.
- 0:47What can they promise a patient? Well, at best, it seems that they can promise
- 0:55a patient an extra five to seven years of good quality years.
- 1:02Five to seven good quality years tacked on at the end of the average lifespan of a person.
- 1:10And that's still an incredible achievement.
- 1:14But maybe stepping back as a patient,
- 1:18especially my patients who come to me, sometimes expecting a little bit more
- 1:24of that longevity care, wanting to catch a cancer,
- 1:28very, very early to have aggressive interventions to hopefully prevent any downstream
- 1:33effects from that cancer.
- 1:34We have this discussion to really uncover what is their biggest fear and what
- 1:42is their expected life longevity, their life expectancy. What do we expect?
- 1:47What year could we guess that they might die?
- 1:52And the good news is that there are actually really well-established actuarial
- 1:58tables that can help us guess when a person might die,
- 2:02given whatever kind of health condition that they have, family history that
- 2:06they have, lifestyle, etc..
- 2:10The next important question is, how do you define health and how do you define
- 2:15healthy living? What do you enjoy? What do you like doing?
- 2:18Would you be willing to cut out your daily one cigarette or your nightly two
- 2:24beers or sitting down and playing video games?
- 2:28Would you give that up if I told you that you could maybe get an extra two and
- 2:34a half years, three years?
- 2:35Right because we're saying in the optimum in the
- 2:38perfect situation we can get an extra five
- 2:41to seven years in the longevity space
- 2:44if that longevity patient does everything right does all the screening does
- 2:49all the interventions follows the right lifestyle follows the right diet on
- 2:54average you get an extra five to seven years at best right seven on the top
- 3:00end five on the low end. Okay, that's not bad.
- 3:03But what are we willing to sacrifice? What are we willing to do?
- 3:07And what does living mean to us? What does it mean to wake up in the morning
- 3:12and then make those decisions? What am I going to eat?
- 3:15Well, if I don't like oatmeal, why would I eat oatmeal? If I really love eggs,
- 3:20I'm probably going to eat eggs.
- 3:21Now, that's very different from the conversation of, well, I really like sweet
- 3:27Froot Loops with some honey on top and a Jack Daniel.
- 3:31Well in that sense unfortunately on
- 3:36the day-to-day basis you develop so many
- 3:39side effects so many problems that you actually start
- 3:42suffering that health that you enjoyed will leave you so there is that balance
- 3:47there is absolutely that point at which your belly gets so big when you bend
- 3:51over you feel pressure acid reflux at night you just can't sleep good but when
- 3:57you're in that other phase of like oatmeal versus eggs?
- 4:01Should I add olive oil to my food or not? Should I use a little bit of butter to cook?
- 4:06Those are such important questions. And if we miss these conversations,
- 4:11if we ignore these conversations, and if we just focus on the hype of longevity
- 4:17and what it can give us, what it could deliver,
- 4:20then we miss the subtleties of life, the beauty of living, the fun of living,
- 4:25the fun of creating this awesome dish that's rich and heavy but amazing and
- 4:31you share it with all your wonderful friends.
- 4:35So each one of us has to ask ourselves, what does health mean to you?
- 4:41What does living well mean to you?
- 4:44What does aging well mean to you? At what point can you identify physical and
- 4:51emotional suffering and decide that actually I need to do something about this.
- 4:57This is when I need to step in, make some minor changes so that I can enjoy
- 5:02a better quality of life.
