Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The External Being Filters and Can Distort the Guidance of the Soul
Transcript
- 0:00The promptings of the soul work through the instrumentality of
- 0:03the external being, the mind, the life force, and the physical
- 0:08body. Thus, they are restricted by the
- 0:12limitations of the work of those external parts, as well as
- 0:16subject to being modified, hijacked, or manipulated based
- 0:22on the external being's own predilections and normal focus.
- 0:27Thus, when the soul provides its guidance to the mind, it is
- 0:31filtered and modified by the mind.
- 0:34In some cases, this leads to the development of a creed,
- 0:38ideology, fixed teaching, or doctrine that formalizes the
- 0:43guidance, but also creates a fixed framework that turns a
- 0:49living insight or prompt into something rigid and narrow in
- 0:54its real application, limited in its ability to adapt or change
- 0:59with changing circumstances or natural growth and development.
- 1:04It may also be made to fit into a preconceived mindset, thereby
- 1:09deforming it right from the start.
- 1:11In the most extreme cases, this can also lead to an attempt to
- 1:15convert others to a doctrine that has not come to those
- 1:19others, simply because the mind has turned this into some kind
- 1:23of universal truth that must be imposed everywhere rather than
- 1:28taken as the soul's direction for that individual at the
- 1:32current stage of their development.
- 1:36Similarly, the life force may seize upon the soul's guidance
- 1:41and try to turn it to its own advantage by using the force for
- 1:45self aggrandizement, gaining power or control over others,
- 1:49gaining wealth, taking sexual advantage, flaunting itself with
- 1:55vanity for the force that is active, or any number of other
- 2:00deformations of the purity of the soul's intended result.
- 2:05Sometimes an element of performance comes in when the
- 2:08expression takes place in a public setting such that the
- 2:12purity of the intention is distorted by the desire of the
- 2:16external nature to attract, gain, recognition or adulation
- 2:21of some sort, etcetera. There can be an emphasis on
- 2:26extraordinary experiences at the expense of the type of
- 2:30substantive change. At a more subtle level, that is
- 2:34the objective that the soul is seeking.
- 2:38Shrioro Bindo writes quote. But this psychic influence or
- 2:43action does not come up to the surface quite pure or does not
- 2:47remain distinct in its purity. If it did, we would be able to
- 2:52distinguish clearly the sole element in US and follow
- 2:56consciously and fully its dictates.
- 2:59An occult mental and vital and subtle physical action
- 3:02intervenes, mixes with it, tries to use it and turns it to its
- 3:08own profit, dwarfs its divinity, distorts or diminishes its
- 3:13self-expression, even causes it to deviate and stumble, or
- 3:18stains it with the impurity, smallness and error of mind and
- 3:23life and body. After it reaches the surface,
- 3:27thus alloyed and diminished, it is taken hold of by the surface
- 3:31nature in an obscure reception and ignorant formation.
- 3:36And there is, or can be by this cause, a still further deviation
- 3:42and mixture. A twist is given, a wrong
- 3:46direction is imparted, a wrong application, a wrong formation,
- 3:51an erroneous result of what is in itself pure stuff and action
- 3:56of our spiritual being. A formation of consciousness is
- 4:00accordingly made, which is a mixture of the psychic influence
- 4:04and its intimations, jumbled with mental ideas and opinions,
- 4:08vital desires and urges, habitual physical tendencies.
- 4:14These coalesce too with the obscured soul influence, the
- 4:18ignorant, the well-intentioned efforts of these external parts
- 4:22towards a higher direction, a mental ideation of a very mixed
- 4:27character, often obscure even in its idealism, sometimes even
- 4:32disastrously mistaken of fervor and passion of the emotional
- 4:37being, throwing up its spray and foam of feelings, sentiments,
- 4:42sentimentalisms, a dynamic enthusiasm of the life parts,
- 4:47eager responses of the physical, the thrills and excitements of
- 4:51nerve and body. All these influences coalesce in
- 4:56a composite formation which is frequently taken as the soul and
- 5:01its mixed and confused action for the soul stir for a psychic
- 5:06development and action or a realized inner influence.
- 5:11The psychic entity is itself free from staying our mixture,
- 5:16but what comes up from it is not protected by that immunity.
- 5:20Therefore this confusion becomes possible.
