- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, coach, coming off a weekend split versus Ohio State,
- 0:04Speaker 1: turning attention to another ranked opponent, Hockey's play on their
- 0:08Speaker 1: way with Boston University home and home series. Just want
- 0:12Speaker 1: to get your thoughts head into the weekend series. First
- 0:15Speaker 1: game Friday night at BU.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought we had a hard fought weekend against
- 0:22Speaker 2: Ohio State. Either game could have probably gone either way.
- 0:28Speaker 2: You know, they're a very good team, and now we've
- 0:31Speaker 2: got another good team we got to play this weekend.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Just you know, I watched their series versus Michigan State
- 0:37Speaker 2: and be used very deep, especially you know up front.
- 0:44Speaker 2: You know, they have I think seventeen draft picks on
- 0:46Speaker 2: their team, so there's very very talented starts with Igorov
- 0:52Speaker 2: and Nett. I think he's an excellent goaltender, and you know,
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hudson and Bomidian and McCarthy on defense, we're all excellent players.
- 1:02Speaker 2: And they've added some. You know, Eiserman up front was
- 1:06Speaker 2: a really good player, but they've added that Ryder, Ritchie
- 1:09Speaker 2: and McLoughlin. And I'm not sure if Beauvert, I mean,
- 1:13Speaker 2: I know he got hurt. I don't know if he's
- 1:14Speaker 2: going to play. But they're a team that you know,
- 1:20Speaker 2: can cause you a lot of fits, especially if you're
- 1:24Speaker 2: not sound defensively, Like if we're not sound defensively and
- 1:28Speaker 2: we let them, uh, you know, get up and down
- 1:33Speaker 2: the ice and we make it a track meet, it's
- 1:36Speaker 2: going to be a tough game for us to win,
- 1:39Speaker 2: I think. So we're going to have to be really
- 1:43Speaker 2: diligent with the puck, especially through the neutral zone and
- 1:47Speaker 2: in our own zone too. We're going to make sure
- 1:49Speaker 2: that we're not compromising, you know, our defensive structure for offense.
- 1:58Speaker 3: All right, Joe, you want to start us out? Thanks,
- 2:00Speaker 3: Good morning, Cavoire.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I'm great, Joe, you, I'm great. Thanks.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Would you think of Brendon Dumphy first time in a
- 2:08Speaker 4: regular six shift on defense?
- 2:12Speaker 2: Well, it wasn't his first game he's played. Uh, you know,
- 2:16Speaker 2: he played out of Colorado College, So I thought he
- 2:20Speaker 2: had played pretty well out there, and then you know,
- 2:24Speaker 2: I thought he gave us a great effort both nights
- 2:28Speaker 2: against Ohio State as well. He's long, he skates well,
- 2:31Speaker 2: and I think he's a really good defender and an
- 2:34Speaker 2: excellent penalty killer.
- 2:37Speaker 4: When you go when you went back and looked at
- 2:39Speaker 4: the tape, obviously, Uh, the Jakes, Ri Shardan percval had
- 2:44Speaker 4: some had some great A opportunities. When when the puck
- 2:47Speaker 4: doesn't go in, does it get to the point where
- 2:49Speaker 4: you're maybe gripping the stick a little too tight?
- 2:53Speaker 2: It might, but I think, uh, you know, they're both
- 2:57Speaker 2: experienced veteran players. They know that it won't last. The
- 3:02Speaker 2: most important thing is that you're getting chances. If you're
- 3:05Speaker 2: not getting chances, then then there's some issues. So I
- 3:09Speaker 2: think both of them are going to be fine. I
- 3:12Speaker 2: just the puck will go in for him as long
- 3:14Speaker 2: as they keep getting those great A opportunities.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Thanks, then go ahead, Andrew.
- 3:30Speaker 5: Hey, keV, I apologize because I'm sure you've probably answered
- 3:33Speaker 5: these questions before. But just you know, last year, you
- 3:37Speaker 5: reached the NCAA tournament, you win a game, and you
- 3:40Speaker 5: even you know, come so close to reaching the Frozen Four.
- 3:44Speaker 5: You know, I guess what was the feeling this year,
- 3:47Speaker 5: either within the program or when you're you're lining up
- 3:50Speaker 5: against opponents. Does it feel any different this year?
- 3:56Speaker 2: I don't think it feels any different. I just think
- 3:59Speaker 2: now that we have expectations of getting back to that position,
- 4:03Speaker 2: So you know, sometimes those can be a burden and
- 4:07Speaker 2: other times they can be helpful, like when your expectations.
- 4:14Speaker 2: You know, when we first got in the league, we
- 4:15Speaker 2: didn't have those types of expectations. You know, I had
- 4:18Speaker 2: expectations to try to get there, but I don't think
- 4:20Speaker 2: the players had realistic expectations to be competing for a
- 4:24Speaker 2: Frozen four. But when you do have those expectations Andrew,
- 4:29Speaker 2: it drives you. You know, there's a little more urgency
- 4:33Speaker 2: in your game. There's you know, when we go into
- 4:38Speaker 2: a game like we're playing against bu and as I said,
- 4:40Speaker 2: they have seventeen draft picks that might have intimidated previous
- 4:45Speaker 2: teams going into that game. I don't think it intimidates
- 4:50Speaker 2: this team because they had fifteen or sixteen last year
- 4:52Speaker 2: too when we played against them. So I think those
- 4:58Speaker 2: experiences that we have last year throughout the playoffs only
- 5:04Speaker 2: help build your brand and build your team's confidence that
- 5:10Speaker 2: you can compete at this level and expect to win
- 5:13Speaker 2: at this level.
- 5:17Speaker 6: Daniel, go ahead, since you're playing his brother this weekend.
- 5:22Speaker 6: Mike Murtag got his first career goal this past weekend.
- 5:27Speaker 6: What have you seen from him this season and how
- 5:32Speaker 6: has he improved from his freshman year.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I just think He's a kid that I really liked him.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Last year. I thought he was, you know, one of
- 5:44Speaker 2: he was a good player last year. It was just
- 5:46Speaker 2: that we were pretty deep and he was probably our
- 5:51Speaker 2: thirteenth forward in a lot of situations, so it was
- 5:56Speaker 2: hard getting him on the ice in different areas. But
- 6:01Speaker 2: he never stopped working. He competes on the puck, He skates,
- 6:05Speaker 2: he shoots the puck really well. So there's a lot
- 6:10Speaker 2: of things I like about his game, and I think
- 6:12Speaker 2: he's going to become a really valuable player for us,
- 6:15Speaker 2: and at some point I'm hoping that we can get
- 6:18Speaker 2: him into some special teams work as well. I think
- 6:20Speaker 2: he has the skill set to be a penalty killer
- 6:23Speaker 2: for us without a doubt at some point.
- 6:28Speaker 7: Go ahead, Randy, Thanks Colin more than cav Good morning, Randy.
- 6:33Speaker 7: You know love that you mentioned the penalty kill. That's
- 6:35Speaker 7: what I want to ask about. It was so aggressive.
- 6:38Speaker 7: You really made it like a part of the penalty
- 6:41Speaker 7: kills identity. The aggressiveness. Does that carry over into this year?
- 6:45Speaker 7: Is it the same kind of approach structure or are
- 6:48Speaker 7: there any adjustments needed with so many returners.
- 6:52Speaker 2: I think that you know, we're certainly an aggressive penalty kill.
- 6:55Speaker 2: B U's a very aggressive penalty kill. You know, there's
- 7:00Speaker 2: gonna be times where we can't be aggressive. You know,
- 7:04Speaker 2: they have some players that if you get too aggressive
- 7:07Speaker 2: on them, they'll expose you. So I think the key
- 7:11Speaker 2: is making sure that we're all in stinct, knowing when
- 7:16Speaker 2: if we're going to be aggressive, all four have to
- 7:17Speaker 2: be going aggressive. If if we only have two going
- 7:22Speaker 2: aggressive and two are kind of sitting back, that's how
- 7:25Speaker 2: lanes open up and seams open up and where you
- 7:28Speaker 2: can be vulnerable.
- 7:30Speaker 3: So I.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I've always preferred to be a type of kill that,
- 7:38Speaker 2: you know, make the other team make three or four
- 7:40Speaker 2: really good plays to beat you, instead of sitting back
- 7:43Speaker 2: and letting them tee off and maybe it goes off
- 7:45Speaker 2: as shin pad right to a guy's stick. You know,
- 7:48Speaker 2: I'd rather have let's go, make them make plays to
- 7:52Speaker 2: beat us. I don't want to follow up.
- 7:55Speaker 7: You had mentioned compromise, not compromising defensive structure to you know,
- 8:00Speaker 7: to generate offense. But you do have defensemen that have
- 8:03Speaker 7: been very active offensively.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Once the puck gets down the ice.
- 8:07Speaker 7: How does the defenseman best balanced that.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Well, I don't think it's just the sole responsibility of
- 8:15Speaker 2: the defenseman to not to compromise defensive structure. A lot
- 8:18Speaker 2: of times it's the forwards because I want our defenseman
- 8:21Speaker 2: to jump into the play. And if there's an opportunity
- 8:26Speaker 2: where we can have a defenseman jump into a play
- 8:28Speaker 2: and make it a four on three, that's great. It's
- 8:31Speaker 2: just then when you have that opportunity, like don't miss
- 8:33Speaker 2: the net wide because echoes ringing around, it's going to
- 8:36Speaker 2: send a two on one the other way. But it's
- 8:39Speaker 2: more a lot of times it's more on the forwards
- 8:44Speaker 2: that you don't want to get three caught low or
- 8:47Speaker 2: three you know, your third forward. Sometimes we call it
- 8:52Speaker 2: dive bombing. You know, you just all are nothing type
- 8:55Speaker 2: four check when you already have two forwards down below
- 8:58Speaker 2: the goal line, and then you lose that guy and
- 9:01Speaker 2: that's what creates three on twos going the other way.
- 9:06Speaker 7: And finally for me, I suppose we could say this
- 9:09Speaker 7: every weekend, but getting traffic in front of the net,
- 9:12Speaker 7: especially with a guy that stands as tall as you
- 9:15Speaker 7: go off, how important are the net front battles in
- 9:18Speaker 7: the I guess both zones, but especially in the offensive zone.
- 9:21Speaker 2: As you try to solve a really great goalie. Well,
- 9:25Speaker 2: regardless of a goaltenderer size, I think you have to
- 9:28Speaker 2: get traffic in front of the net. That's the best
- 9:31Speaker 2: way to score goals. When you can take the goalies'
- 9:33Speaker 2: eyes away, that's the best way to score goals. That
- 9:36Speaker 2: you know, we have to have multiple shot shifts. You
- 9:38Speaker 2: have to be able to get to the dirty areas
- 9:40Speaker 2: for rebounds. You're very rarely I don't care what goalie
- 9:45Speaker 2: we're playing against in Hockey East, you're very rarely going
- 9:48Speaker 2: to beat those goalies clean. So you got to find
- 9:53Speaker 2: ways to manufacture goals. And the majority of the time
- 9:56Speaker 2: you manufacture goals is by taking away the goalies eyes.
- 10:00Speaker 2: They're getting rebounds or deflections.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Thank you, sure, shoe go ahead.
- 10:08Speaker 4: Yeah. With all the new players, are they stylistically the
- 10:11Speaker 4: same as last year or have they switched things up
- 10:14Speaker 4: a little bit?
- 10:16Speaker 2: What do you mean by that?
- 10:19Speaker 3: Oh?
- 10:20Speaker 2: I thought, Okay, b U's team. I don't think they've
- 10:24Speaker 2: switched up much. I think that you know, they've always
- 10:27Speaker 2: been a very talented team offensively, you know, they they're
- 10:35Speaker 2: a team that has always been excellent in transition. They
- 10:38Speaker 2: get a lot of offense from their back end, you know,
- 10:41Speaker 2: I know McCarthy scored a goal the other night to
- 10:46Speaker 2: get them going in that Saturday night game, and then
- 10:49Speaker 2: the tying goal came off of a shot from Bomydian.
- 10:52Speaker 2: So their defense creates a lot of offense for them
- 10:56Speaker 2: as well. So I think you know, their defensive zone
- 11:00Speaker 2: coverage seems like it's very similar to what they played
- 11:02Speaker 2: last year. So I don't envision seeing a much different
- 11:08Speaker 2: style of hockey from them this weekend than we played
- 11:11Speaker 2: against last year, and they probably won't see much of
- 11:14Speaker 2: a difference in the way we play either.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Dan go ahead.
- 11:23Speaker 6: On the Coaches Show, I think you mentioned that you're
- 11:29Speaker 6: on the rush. Defense has allowed a few goals this season.
- 11:33Speaker 6: Is that a product of losing your defense structure or
- 11:36Speaker 6: what's that issue? Ben?
- 11:39Speaker 2: I think it's like what I referenced earlier, it's sometimes
- 11:42Speaker 2: our forwards, and it's not always a forward. Sometimes it's
- 11:45Speaker 2: a defenseman pinching at the wrong time, you know, when
- 11:49Speaker 2: he doesn't have coverage, like sometimes it's on. There's always
- 11:53Speaker 2: you have to work in tandem, the forwards and the
- 11:56Speaker 2: d and I want our defenseman to pinch, but they
- 11:59Speaker 2: can only pinch when this coverage. You know, when they
- 12:01Speaker 2: have a forward back, so and a lot of that
- 12:06Speaker 2: Dan is just it's early in the season and you
- 12:09Speaker 2: get some new players and it's we have to get
- 12:13Speaker 2: back to getting in sync. It's kind of like my
- 12:17Speaker 2: golf game. When I start playing in May, I forget
- 12:19Speaker 2: how to hit that fit flop shot. You know, I
- 12:23Speaker 2: always say that that's a July shot, not a May shot.
- 12:27Speaker 2: You just sometimes forget those little skills, but we will
- 12:33Speaker 2: and that's what practice is for, and that's what games
- 12:35Speaker 2: are for, and repetitions. The more reps you get, the
- 12:40Speaker 2: better you get at it.
- 12:42Speaker 6: My driver shots at Disney shot because it's make believe.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Yeah, well, get some lessons.
- 12:52Speaker 6: And your golf reference totally threw me off on what
- 12:58Speaker 6: I was going after.
- 13:01Speaker 2: So now it's my fault.
- 13:06Speaker 6: It probably wasn't important.
- 13:07Speaker 3: It's fine, all right, anything else, guys, go ahead, Andrew.
- 13:16Speaker 5: I figured I just asked a few questions and then
- 13:18Speaker 5: maybe Daniel will remember what he wanted to ask. MVP
- 13:23Speaker 5: work there again, playing catchup, because I'm guessing you've already
- 13:27Speaker 5: talked about this, but you know, Muldowney, you know, getting
- 13:31Speaker 5: named to the Spangler Cup roster, just what does that
- 13:35Speaker 5: mean for your program? And what has he been like
- 13:38Speaker 5: to coach? What have you seen from this year after
- 13:40Speaker 5: the tremendous season he put up last year.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I'm really proud of him, and I think
- 13:48Speaker 2: it's a great honor that he got named to that team,
- 13:51Speaker 2: and I think it's well deserved. He had, you know,
- 13:53Speaker 2: twenty nine goals last year. But you know, Andrew, I
- 13:58Speaker 2: think the thing that like we're most proud of here
- 14:03Speaker 2: is our players like Hudson Chandor when he came in here,
- 14:07Speaker 2: he started on the fourth line, you know, when he
- 14:09Speaker 2: worked his way up to be a first line player.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Joey Muldowney did the same thing. Like Joey Muldowney came
- 14:15Speaker 2: in here, and I think he was on the line
- 14:17Speaker 2: with Ryan Taddle and Tristan Fraser I think at one point,
- 14:22Speaker 2: and we were playing them against the other team's top
- 14:24Speaker 2: line because they were a great defensive line.
- 14:26Speaker 3: You know.
- 14:27Speaker 2: He was more of a defensive player and a penalty killer.
- 14:30Speaker 2: And then he works his way up the lineup and
- 14:34Speaker 2: he never ever sacrificed his two hundred foot game to
- 14:37Speaker 2: score goals. And that's the thing that you know, I'm really.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Think.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I don't know if proud is the right word. But
- 14:49Speaker 2: those are the things I like to see in our
- 14:51Speaker 2: players that I want to have two hundred foot players.
- 14:54Speaker 2: I just don't want to have one trick ponies that
- 14:56Speaker 2: just score goals. Now, if you have a guy occasionally,
- 15:00Speaker 2: you're gonna get a guy that that they they just
- 15:02Speaker 2: can score, and scoring is the hardest thing to do
- 15:04Speaker 2: in hockey. But Joey doesn't, I say, sacrifice defensive structure
- 15:10Speaker 2: to score goals. He doesn't cheat the game to score goals.
- 15:13Speaker 2: And I think that's his greatest attribute.
- 15:20Speaker 5: And I guess I would just follow up, you're going
- 15:23Speaker 5: back to be you last year? You guys, you had
- 15:25Speaker 5: a really entertaining game in stores that that be you
- 15:28Speaker 5: pulled out and then of course the win at at
- 15:32Speaker 5: the Garden in the hockey semifinals. I know there's a
- 15:36Speaker 5: lot of you know, uh turnover in both rosters, but
- 15:41Speaker 5: just I guess, what what are you expecting?
- 15:44Speaker 3: You do?
- 15:44Speaker 5: You expect them to have a little bit of extra
- 15:47Speaker 5: juice from from that memory of losing in the Garden.
- 15:52Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know if that's the case.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I mean, they went to the championship game too, so uh,
- 16:00Speaker 2: I just think I remember after that game that we
- 16:03Speaker 2: played here in stores. Both Jay and I both said
- 16:06Speaker 2: that was one of the most exciting, entertaining hockey games.
- 16:10Speaker 2: It was a great game because you know, neither one
- 16:13Speaker 2: of us are going to trap, neither one of us
- 16:15Speaker 2: are gonna sit back. We're gonna attack. Both teams like
- 16:19Speaker 2: to get after the puck and you know, create turnovers
- 16:25Speaker 2: and there will be a lot of energy in the game.
- 16:27Speaker 2: And that's what I'm envisioning, you know, at Aganis and
- 16:31Speaker 2: also here at Tuscano. I think it's going to be
- 16:34Speaker 2: that type of game. So they're fun games to play in.
- 16:39Speaker 2: And I'm you know, I love playing against b U
- 16:43Speaker 2: and I'm sure they love playing against us because it's
- 16:45Speaker 2: always an entertaining style of hockey and very rarely do
- 16:49Speaker 2: the fans get cheated and in those games.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Thanks sure, all right, Dan, we'll lend it with you.
- 16:58Speaker 6: Andrew's all tactic worked. I remembered it from yesterday at
- 17:04Speaker 6: Big East Media Day, the women's basketball team was just
- 17:07Speaker 6: kind of laughing at they finally can take a break
- 17:10Speaker 6: during practice because they've got enough players.
- 17:12Speaker 3: After the last few years.
- 17:13Speaker 6: So on the flip side without Joe for the next
- 17:19Speaker 6: little bit, does that impact how you practice at all.
- 17:22Speaker 6: Only having one extra forward outside your lines.
- 17:25Speaker 2: It does, you know, I don't know if I'm gonna
- 17:31Speaker 2: get myself in trouble, but I just don't think the
- 17:34Speaker 2: roster limits of twenty six is what's best for the
- 17:37Speaker 2: student athletes. You know, we're already down to yesterday we
- 17:46Speaker 2: had four lines and eight d for practice. And you
- 17:49Speaker 2: really have to manage to practice. You can't. You got
- 17:54Speaker 2: to be careful how you practice. You can't burn you
- 17:56Speaker 2: guys out. It's hard when you go on every other shift.
- 17:59Speaker 2: So to answer your question, yes, it does affect how
- 18:02Speaker 2: your practice and how many reps you take. We're certainly
- 18:06Speaker 2: keeping a close eye on that.
- 18:08Speaker 1: All right, Well, thanks everyone for joining coach. Thank you,
- 18:12Speaker 1: good luck this weekend.
- 18:13Speaker 2: All right, thanks guys, have a good day.
