- 0:01Speaker 1: Taking a Walk Nashville. Obviously, when they hear the song
- 0:04Speaker 1: and they look at me, they're not going to be like, oh,
- 0:07Speaker 1: this guy made it. It happened so easy for him.
- 0:10Speaker 1: You know, when they see the video, when they hear
- 0:12Speaker 1: the song, it'll give them home.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Today I have with me Romeo Vaughn, a Mexican American
- 0:17Speaker 2: country artist originally from Santa Rosa, Texas, who blend's country, soul,
- 0:23Speaker 2: and Latin pop and his music. He has been in
- 0:26Speaker 2: Nashville since twenty sixteen and his story is one you
- 0:30Speaker 2: don't want to miss today. Welcome to taking a Walk Nashville.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Romeo, how are you, ken, How are you? Thanks for
- 0:35Speaker 1: having me, of course, thank you.
- 0:37Speaker 2: For being here. So just to let listeners know a
- 0:41Speaker 2: little bit about your background. You are a US Army veteran,
- 0:45Speaker 2: and thank you so much for your service.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Thanks for you support.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yeah, of course, and I'd like to know were you
- 0:51Speaker 2: a performing musician prior to serving in the Army or
- 0:55Speaker 2: did you get into music perhaps after that?
- 0:58Speaker 1: No? So yeah, so I did do music before the
- 1:01Speaker 1: Army when I was a kid. I have a cousin
- 1:04Speaker 1: of my name's Jesse Turner. He has a band called signal.
- 1:08Speaker 1: They're a Grammy Award winning band. And so when I
- 1:12Speaker 1: was younger, he took me under his wing and I
- 1:17Speaker 1: I performed with him. And then Ab Kintania, which is
- 1:21Speaker 1: Selena's the late Selena great late Selena died. It was
- 1:26Speaker 1: her brother started a band called the Kumi Kings, and
- 1:30Speaker 1: from there Ab started a band called Big Sequel, which
- 1:33Speaker 1: is like a it was like an upbeat Mexican American,
- 1:36Speaker 1: but it was it was strictly Spanish. It was strictly
- 1:38Speaker 1: Spanish music. And so I was in my teen in
- 1:43Speaker 1: my when I was a teenager, I mean we got
- 1:45Speaker 1: signed a capital in in my and so like we
- 1:48Speaker 1: we were doing the music. I mean I was fifteen
- 1:54Speaker 1: years old and I performed in Monterey, Mexico in front
- 1:58Speaker 1: of ninety four thousand people, you know, so I mean
- 2:01Speaker 1: we weren't the headliners, but I mean we got to
- 2:03Speaker 1: perform on the stage. You know, I was on international television,
- 2:10Speaker 1: you know, back in the I don't know, maybe if
- 2:12Speaker 1: you have no Spanish listeners listening, and if you don't,
- 2:15Speaker 1: it's fine, but we got Savoo hi gante risperto America,
- 2:18Speaker 1: which is the equivalent of like disperto America is Univision's
- 2:23Speaker 1: Good Morning America. Sado Hi Gante is like is the
- 2:29Speaker 1: American Jimmy Fallon Show? Like so I was like on
- 2:33Speaker 1: on doing all that at fourteen fifteen, sixteen, seventeen years old,
- 2:39Speaker 1: performing yeah all over I mean I've been to I've
- 2:43Speaker 1: been to all forty eight states, uh before I was eighteen,
- 2:47Speaker 1: you know, and and performing all over Mexico and South
- 2:52Speaker 1: you know. So yeah, it was. It didn't just start.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I've been doing this for a long, long, long, but
- 2:58Speaker 1: never in my own, never like my own truth. Never.
- 3:01Speaker 1: It was always you know, in somebody else's band or
- 3:05Speaker 1: or a band that I was a part of. It
- 3:07Speaker 1: was never like my truth to my like who who
- 3:10Speaker 1: I am?
- 3:10Speaker 2: Right? Yeah? So you were doing music for as long
- 3:13Speaker 2: as you can remember, right yeah, and then when you
- 3:17Speaker 2: permanently moved to Nashville to continue pursuing your dream of music,
- 3:23Speaker 2: you faced homelessness for sixteen weeks, and eventually you found
- 3:26Speaker 2: support through the VA and the nonprofit organization Matthew twenty five. Yes,
- 3:32Speaker 2: what does this Nashville nonprofit mean to you?
- 3:36Speaker 1: Everything? Like everything. I would not be here talking to
- 3:39Speaker 1: you if it wasn't for God working through Matthew twenty five.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I mean they took me in. I don't know. Let
- 3:47Speaker 1: me tell you the process, say how it's like really cool.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I'm dead out of my car. I'm just like, uh,
- 3:52Speaker 1: I'm under this bridge and I'm just eating like out
- 3:55Speaker 1: of a garbage can and there's ants not my food,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and it's just like ryan to me, and I don't know.
- 4:02Speaker 1: That's why my burgers now, I tell everybody I only
- 4:05Speaker 1: want bed and cheese like a five year old, right.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But because of that experience, so I finally my brother
- 4:14Speaker 1: actually was like Romeo, what are you doing man? Because
- 4:17Speaker 1: my brother's also a veteran, so is my dad. He
- 4:20Speaker 1: was like, you need to call the VA because we weren't.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I didn't tell my brother until the end of my homelessness,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and I didn't tell my parents until after I got
- 4:28Speaker 1: out of Matthew twenty five. They had no idea. So
- 4:32Speaker 1: my brother's like, you need to call the VA. So
- 4:34Speaker 1: I said, okay. So I was like, well, can he
- 4:37Speaker 1: pay my phone bill this month? Like because I'm not
- 4:39Speaker 1: gonna have a phone, and at that time, I have cricket.
- 4:41Speaker 1: You know, it's all we could get. You know, you
- 4:44Speaker 1: got you know beggars can't be choosers. So my brother,
- 4:47Speaker 1: my brother paid the fifty dollars a month for me
- 4:49Speaker 1: because my phone was about to be disconnected like the
- 4:51Speaker 1: next day or something. So my brother paid my phone bill.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And he was super mad at me that I didn't
- 4:57Speaker 1: tell him that I was homeless, right, and so I
- 4:59Speaker 1: called it. I call them and I'm like, I'm homeless,
- 5:04Speaker 1: like I've been out here for four months, like it's bad, like,
- 5:09Speaker 1: you know, And they came. They literally from the time
- 5:15Speaker 1: I called them to the time they picked me up,
- 5:18Speaker 1: it was probably twenty minutes. They were there fast and
- 5:22Speaker 1: in a hurry. They got there. They took me and
- 5:25Speaker 1: they took me to the mental Health Annex and so
- 5:29Speaker 1: from there they showered me, you know, and I got
- 5:34Speaker 1: to shower. Not that I wasn't showering because I have
- 5:37Speaker 1: a friend of mine, his name Swan Hernandez out of Laredo, Texas.
- 5:41Speaker 1: He's a truck driver, so he would lend me his
- 5:43Speaker 1: points once a week so I could go shower at
- 5:46Speaker 1: the Loves off Trinity Lane. But it was always the
- 5:48Speaker 1: struggle to get there. But anyway, so I go to
- 5:52Speaker 1: Matthew twenty five on the Mental health annets. They called
- 5:55Speaker 1: Matthew twenty five. I got. I didn't have anything but
- 5:59Speaker 1: my bangs, and they washed my clothes. They put me
- 6:04Speaker 1: in a bed in a room. They fed me the intake.
- 6:11Speaker 1: They did the whole intake process. They also for while
- 6:15Speaker 1: you're there, you have to do like an intake process,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and then you have to do chores. You can't drink,
- 6:20Speaker 1: you can't do drugs. You have to report, and when
- 6:23Speaker 1: you like, they help you get a job. And thankfully
- 6:26Speaker 1: I ended up gaining a job at our back steakhouse.
- 6:29Speaker 1: While I was there, because I was about to lose
- 6:32Speaker 1: my car. That's what helped me was I was about
- 6:36Speaker 1: to lose my car, but my parents found out that
- 6:39Speaker 1: I was homeless and I hadn't been paying my car.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I don't know if he didn't for me or car
- 6:46Speaker 1: was daddy. So you're like, oh no, I gotta pay
- 6:49Speaker 1: for my car. And I was able to keep my car.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I ended up going to UH to work. I stayed
- 6:57Speaker 1: at Matthew twenty five for as long as I needed to.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I was grateful that I was there, but I didn't
- 7:04Speaker 1: want to be there. I will you know. I didn't
- 7:07Speaker 1: want to be there, and I because The thing about
- 7:11Speaker 1: Matthew twenty five is it could it's the biggest blessing
- 7:14Speaker 1: in the world, but it can also be an achilles
- 7:18Speaker 1: because they do everything for you. So do you take
- 7:23Speaker 1: this too better to your life or do you take
- 7:26Speaker 1: this to be lazy? You know? So all I needed
- 7:30Speaker 1: was the help, and from the time I got there
- 7:33Speaker 1: six weeks later, I was on my own. That's wonderful, Yeah,
- 7:36Speaker 1: because you know there's some people that will be there
- 7:38Speaker 1: for a long time, you know, but it's nothing bad
- 7:41Speaker 1: to anyone. The thing is a lot of the people,
- 7:43Speaker 1: a lot of the men that are there, they're older,
- 7:47Speaker 1: you know, they got they got disabilities, or they got
- 7:50Speaker 1: they don't they can do that they need. But I was,
- 7:54Speaker 1: I'm young, I'm driven, Like what there was the excuse?
- 7:58Speaker 1: You know, it was great. Matthew twenty five means everything
- 8:03Speaker 1: to me. That's why last year for my birthday, you know,
- 8:07Speaker 1: I always tell everybody, like I always give a shout
- 8:09Speaker 1: out to Chuley's, that tex mex restaurant, because they donated
- 8:13Speaker 1: all the food so I could go and feed them
- 8:16Speaker 1: at Matthew twenty five. This year, it was scoreboards when
- 8:19Speaker 1: we went to shoot the music video. Also my parents
- 8:26Speaker 1: last year came to Nashville to be with me for
- 8:29Speaker 1: my birthday because my birthday is August sixteenth, and so
- 8:32Speaker 1: my parents came for my birthday and we were able
- 8:36Speaker 1: to get like fifteen seventy five gallon bags full of clothes,
- 8:40Speaker 1: and for my birthday we went to go donate that
- 8:42Speaker 1: as well. And so Matthew twenty five is everything to me,
- 8:46Speaker 1: and I think I believe it, and I will tell
- 8:49Speaker 1: you that God willing my star rises and the more
- 8:54Speaker 1: my platform allows me to do more, the more I
- 8:59Speaker 1: will do with Matthew twenty five. I think the plane
- 9:02Speaker 1: the easiest way I can say is when I make it,
- 9:06Speaker 1: Matthew twenty five makes it. They will never need anything
- 9:08Speaker 1: ever again.
- 9:10Speaker 2: I love that, and I love that they were able
- 9:12Speaker 2: to support you through your hard times. And now you're
- 9:16Speaker 2: shining a light on this organization and you feature Matthew
- 9:21Speaker 2: twenty five and the music video for your upcoming single
- 9:25Speaker 2: Big Dreams from a Small Town. Yeah, I just got
- 9:28Speaker 2: to say, Romeo, I haven't seen a music video so
- 9:31Speaker 2: authentic in a long time. You know, you see a
- 9:33Speaker 2: lot of videos now on social media out there that's
- 9:37Speaker 2: all like glitter and glam but this video really gives
- 9:40Speaker 2: listeners a look and to who you are, where you
- 9:44Speaker 2: came from, and it's just so authentic and real and
- 9:48Speaker 2: I really appreciate that.
- 9:50Speaker 1: So did you.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Come up with the vision for this music video?
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yes, I literally wrote the entire treat. Like the director.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I went to him. His name is Carl and I
- 10:02Speaker 1: love him to death. I went with it in mind.
- 10:05Speaker 1: I have the video in my head years before we
- 10:10Speaker 1: made the video, so I knew, like I even I
- 10:15Speaker 1: remember there was a when I was eating at Matthew
- 10:18Speaker 1: twenty five and I, you know, I don't remember his name,
- 10:22Speaker 1: that there was a guy next to me that was
- 10:24Speaker 1: eating with me. We were eating and I said, before
- 10:27Speaker 1: I die, I'm going to make a video here at
- 10:29Speaker 1: Matthew twenty five. And he and I always like I
- 10:34Speaker 1: had it all in my head and Carl just helped
- 10:36Speaker 1: me bring it to life.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Amazing. Yeah. I hope every Nashville local come out to
- 10:43Speaker 2: support Matthew twenty five and volunteer and help them and
- 10:47Speaker 2: need as well. And I want to touch on your
- 10:50Speaker 2: previously released single over and it's about the struggles you
- 10:54Speaker 2: faced with alcohol addiction. So now that you've overcome homelessness
- 10:59Speaker 2: and your sober Would you say the music you right
- 11:03Speaker 2: now is a lot different than maybe the music you
- 11:06Speaker 2: were writing ten to twelve years ago.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, most definitely. That's a good question for sure,
- 11:14Speaker 1: because the music I was writing back then, I was
- 11:20Speaker 1: drinking and partying, you know. I also struggled with drugs,
- 11:23Speaker 1: you know as well, you know, and so it was
- 11:29Speaker 1: more when I would write songs and stuff, it was
- 11:32Speaker 1: or record songs, and it was more of like like
- 11:36Speaker 1: I'm trying to get a girl, or you know, let's
- 11:40Speaker 1: party and let's do this, and let's do that. And
- 11:43Speaker 1: now it's not like that. I mean, I'm still gonna
- 11:46Speaker 1: make songs like that because nobody wants to hear depressing song, right,
- 11:51Speaker 1: But I think the writing has changed because the man
- 11:54Speaker 1: has changed.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Yeah, And I'm sure it's very healing for you to
- 11:59Speaker 2: write out the struggles you have been through and overcome,
- 12:04Speaker 2: for sure.
- 12:04Speaker 1: You know. Like I actually just wrote a song the
- 12:06Speaker 1: other day called wild Bills Nights, and I just wrote it,
- 12:11Speaker 1: but the second versus those days have come and gone,
- 12:15Speaker 1: but the memories we made I've put in this song.
- 12:19Speaker 1: So it's wild Bills was a bar that we all us.
- 12:21Speaker 1: It's a hometown bar back back in Harninge in Texas,
- 12:25Speaker 1: but missed the wild Bill. The mister Bill. He was
- 12:28Speaker 1: our biology teacher in high school. We all of us
- 12:32Speaker 1: went to the Wild Bills and we just it kind
- 12:34Speaker 1: of Wild Bills kind of you know, gave me that hope.
- 12:38Speaker 1: When I got into country music. It was Wild Bills
- 12:40Speaker 1: where I went because it was a country western saloon.
- 12:44Speaker 1: I'm definitely different now because I'm for when I sober,
- 12:48Speaker 1: you know, and so I'm clean and clear minded, and
- 12:52Speaker 1: I can look back and remember the times that we had.
- 12:55Speaker 1: And I think that's what's going to make the music
- 12:58Speaker 1: great because even when I don't write about like overcoming
- 13:00Speaker 1: struggles or overcoming this, like Wild Bills Nights is such
- 13:04Speaker 1: a great song, you know, because it's it's almost like
- 13:08Speaker 1: nostalgic for like people that because it even says you
- 13:12Speaker 1: have to be there to understand those Wild Bills. Nice,
- 13:15Speaker 1: you know, but in your hometown you have a Wild Bills.
- 13:18Speaker 1: It might not be called Wild Bills, but there's a
- 13:20Speaker 1: Wild Bills, you know. And I think everybody's going to
- 13:23Speaker 1: relate and big dreams from a small town. Everybody's going
- 13:27Speaker 1: to read. Everybody has and being having big dreams. You know,
- 13:30Speaker 1: it's not not everybody wants to be a country music artist.
- 13:33Speaker 1: You know, people want you want to podcast, people want
- 13:37Speaker 1: to be doctors, people want to be lawyers, people want
- 13:38Speaker 1: to be general people want to be ditit managers at publics.
- 13:41Speaker 1: You know, people want it and there's nothing wrong with that.
- 13:44Speaker 1: People have dreams are not all music, but if they
- 13:47Speaker 1: can hear a song like Big Dreams from a small
- 13:49Speaker 1: town and be like, you know what I am from.
- 13:52Speaker 1: I always mentioned Burlington, Colorado because I have some family
- 13:55Speaker 1: there and it's smaller than Santa Rosa. There's a place
- 13:58Speaker 1: called Burlington, colorad Whether you're from Brington, Colorado, or somewhere
- 14:03Speaker 1: in Kansas or somewhere in small town in Utah, and
- 14:06Speaker 1: you're like, man, how could I ever go from this
- 14:10Speaker 1: to you know, being the district manager of water Burger
- 14:15Speaker 1: or whatever the case may be. From a small town.
- 14:18Speaker 1: That doesn't happen to people like me. I'm just going
- 14:20Speaker 1: to be the cashier forever, you know. But they hear
- 14:24Speaker 1: Big Dreams from a small town and they're like, you
- 14:26Speaker 1: know what, yeah, I you know what, I can do this,
- 14:31Speaker 1: you know, and like the song in Big dream that
- 14:33Speaker 1: says whoever said it wasn't easy wasn't telling a lie.
- 14:37Speaker 1: So obviously when they hear the song and they look
- 14:40Speaker 1: at me, they're not going to be like, oh, this
- 14:42Speaker 1: guy made it. It happened so easy for him. You
- 14:45Speaker 1: know when they see the video, when they hear the song,
- 14:48Speaker 1: it'll give them hope. I believe.
- 14:51Speaker 2: I think so too. Yeah, I think your whole message
- 14:53Speaker 2: with the song will give people hope and know that
- 14:56Speaker 2: it's not easy, but you know they can do everything
- 14:59Speaker 2: they can and to overcome their struggles.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Yeah, we all have struggles, and I think I think
- 15:04Speaker 1: it's gonna be I think it's great because I mean,
- 15:08Speaker 1: what what would life be if it was just easy?
- 15:14Speaker 1: You know, where like because that's where you know our
- 15:18Speaker 1: faith comes in and our hope comes in, and the
- 15:22Speaker 1: hope that you know, that hope and faith that Jesus
- 15:26Speaker 1: did come and die for us, and that he did
- 15:28Speaker 1: rise again, and that he's coming back and that he's
- 15:31Speaker 1: always with us. I even think about Jesus when because
- 15:35Speaker 1: you know, we're human. Not everybody's going to like my song,
- 15:38Speaker 1: not every reason I like the message. Not everybody's gonna
- 15:40Speaker 1: like the way I dress, the way I look the
- 15:43Speaker 1: way you look, the way you dress. You know, it's
- 15:45Speaker 1: just it is what it is. But I think about
- 15:48Speaker 1: when I think about Christ's them like they killed him
- 15:52Speaker 1: for being perfect? Who am I to think that they
- 15:56Speaker 1: won't judge me? And I think that that how me?
- 16:02Speaker 2: Thank you so much for sharing your message, Romeo, and
- 16:06Speaker 2: I just kind of want to switch gears now to
- 16:09Speaker 2: a fun topic. So you design all of your stage
- 16:14Speaker 2: where I've worked with Nashville celebrity fashion designer Manuel who's
- 16:19Speaker 2: outfitted the likes of Johnny Cash and Elvis. So what
- 16:23Speaker 2: got you into sewing clothes and fashion?
- 16:26Speaker 1: I love Michael Jason. I have an aunt of mine
- 16:32Speaker 1: and my aunt Lisa, we call it Da Lisa. He's
- 16:36Speaker 1: a simstress and so she does like all like the
- 16:40Speaker 1: like the little Girl's cheerleading outfice when I was when
- 16:45Speaker 1: I was younger, my dad took me to McCallen, Texas
- 16:50Speaker 1: to be a to do a talent show and and
- 16:54Speaker 1: then I I won that one. But then my aunt
- 16:57Speaker 1: Lisa Ida Lisa in La Fairy, which is like six
- 17:01Speaker 1: miles down the road from Santa Rosa, they were having
- 17:05Speaker 1: another talent show and I was in it to Michael Jackson,
- 17:09Speaker 1: but I did the other time show I didn't have
- 17:11Speaker 1: the jacket and I needed I wanted the rhyin stone
- 17:14Speaker 1: jacket and the glove, and my Dallist made it for me,
- 17:18Speaker 1: and she and I helped her and and kind of
- 17:23Speaker 1: like really like put me down. And then when I
- 17:27Speaker 1: came to Nashville, it wasn't until like twenty nineteen or
- 17:33Speaker 1: twenty like COVID almost COVID times. I was. I was
- 17:37Speaker 1: at Tin Roof in Cool Springs ten Roof two, and
- 17:43Speaker 1: I was with a friend of mine and this guy said, hey, man,
- 17:47Speaker 1: you got to meet my uncle. So I was like, okay, cool,
- 17:52Speaker 1: I'll go meet him. And I went to meet him
- 17:54Speaker 1: and I never left. And it was a great time,
- 17:57Speaker 1: you know, in my life. But you know, like anything else,
- 18:00Speaker 1: you got to move on and and uh, but I
- 18:04Speaker 1: learned a lot, and I'm very thankful to man well
- 18:06Speaker 1: for teaching you taught me and and I got to
- 18:09Speaker 1: hang out with him a lot, and I got to
- 18:11Speaker 1: see the man that the the star, you know, and uh,
- 18:15Speaker 1: spend a lot of time together. But you know, like
- 18:19Speaker 1: anything else, you know, you got to make your own
- 18:22Speaker 1: path and make your own way. And so I took
- 18:25Speaker 1: what he taught me. I took what my DA taught me,
- 18:27Speaker 1: and and and you know here we are patching stuff up.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Very cool. You are definitely multi talented. And I love
- 18:37Speaker 2: that you designed your own clothes.
- 18:39Speaker 1: That's so fun.
- 18:40Speaker 2: It is my last question for you. We are on
- 18:44Speaker 2: taking a walk Nashville, so I'd like to know what
- 18:48Speaker 2: is your favorite place or where is your favorite place
- 18:51Speaker 2: to take away the river?
- 18:54Speaker 1: I could wow. I go every day. I go every
