- 0:04This production is brought to you by the Recess Bell. Hey everybody, my
- 0:09name is Justin Greenberg and this is Film Real And on today's episode, we're
- 0:13gonna be going over all the movies that I've seen in twenty twenty four so
- 0:16far, give a little brief recap of the movie and if I give it
- 0:20a recommendation. I have zero social life. Pretty much anytime I have free
- 0:26time, I'm at the movies. It is my way to escape the reality
- 0:30of my shitty life. And I've been to the theaters twenty seven times so
- 0:35far and I plan on breaking one hundred like I did last year. So
- 0:39let's begin with the first movie that I saw this year in theaters, and
- 0:43that is Anyone But You Now. I did a more in depth review of
- 0:47this movie and an earlier episode. Definitely check that one out quickly to recap
- 0:52it. One of the worst comedies I've seen in many years. Soulless taking
- 0:57no risks, unrelatable characters, absolute dog shit. Second movie from twenty twenty
- 1:03four was Migration, a fun little family film about a group of ducks that
- 1:07don't want to migrate, but then decide they want to migrate. It's not
- 1:12breaking any grounds. It's nothing i'd watch again, but you know, it
- 1:17was fine for what it was. Boys in the Boat, directed by George
- 1:21Clooney, was a movie that I thought I would like a lot more.
- 1:25I like sports movies. I like sports movies based on true stories. This
- 1:27movie is about a rowing team in the nineteen thirties that you know, gets
- 1:32to go to the Olympics, and there's there's drama, of course, you
- 1:34know, it's an underdog story. It has all the elements that I think
- 1:38I would like. You know, they're going up against the Nazis. It's
- 1:42got things that I think on paper would work well. But as a feature
- 1:47film, I don't know. I felt like the threat really wasn't as great
- 1:49as it should have been. It was very cliche, which isn't the worst
- 1:53thing in movies, but I it just didn't click for me. I think
- 1:57a documentary about this would be far more interesting. The Bee Keeper another Jason
- 2:02Statham action movie. All these movies with Jason stath of all blend together.
- 2:07Every Jason Stathan film feels the same. And is that a bad thing?
- 2:13No, If you want to just turn your mind off for mindless action sequences
- 2:17and you know, British smarmy remarks, sure it's serviceable, but nothing again.
- 2:25I would see again i SS I thought was such a good concept for
- 2:30a movie. Takes place on the International Space System, so you have Russian
- 2:34people and American people both on this you know, space station, and war
- 2:39breaks out, a nuclear war breaks out, and these people that are once
- 2:44friends have to go up against each other again. I think it was a
- 2:46really good concept, but it really didn't deliver. I saw Queen at Montreal.
- 2:53I saw a Queen concert. They released it in Imax. This was
- 2:57awesome. You know, seeing Freddie Mercury on the big is something I recommend
- 3:01everybody get to see. American Fiction is one of my favorite movies that I've
- 3:06seen all year. It tells the story of a black author who writes really
- 3:10intelligent books, but unfortunately the messes don't enjoy them, so he starts writing
- 3:17stereotypical black books and it garners an audience. And it's about morals. The
- 3:23whole thing is like, is he selling his soul to write something that's gonna
- 3:29make money even though he thinks it's stupid. It's a very very good movie
- 3:32about family and relationships, and it pulls no punches, and I think the
- 3:38ending really delivered and the acting is unbelievable. American fiction is definitely one of
- 3:43my favorites of the year. Scrambled is a movie I really don't remember much
- 3:49about. It's about a woman who What the fuck was Scrambled about? A
- 3:55woman who wanted to have a kid or didn't want to. I remember the
- 3:58people in the movie. I'm not going to look into exactly what it is.
- 4:00This is just sort of a freestyle. Look at all the movies I
- 4:03saw and if something. If I can't remember what your movie's about and it
- 4:08came out less than two months ago, that's a problem. The one thing
- 4:11I do remember about Scrambled is everybody in the movie was very unlikable, and
- 4:15I remember the performances being good, but I remember not having a single character
- 4:20where I was rooting for them. So that's the one takeaway from Scrambled.
- 4:25Lisa Frankenstein I had a lot of fun with. I was very surprised that
- 4:30the audience in critics score was a lot lower than I thought it would be.
- 4:33I really, you know, this felt like a throwback film. It
- 4:39was directed by Robin Williams's daughter In her directorial debut, and she knocked it
- 4:43out of the park. I see a big future for her. I thought
- 4:46the performance was really fun. The main premise is a outcast, you know,
- 4:49gothy sort of girl, sort of like Lydia in Beetlejuice. She wants
- 4:56a boyfriend and somehow through a lightning stride kidding a grave of somebody that she's
- 5:01been fawning over. She's been fawning over this dead body at a grave site,
- 5:05and it just so happens lightning strikes this this very grave and brings back
- 5:12this guy from the eighteen hundreds, and this weird romance starts out. It
- 5:16takes cues from lots of movies. I mentioned Beetlejuice. I definitely felt Heather's
- 5:21vibes. I've even felt something like et She's sort of teaching this, this
- 5:27creature, this zombie like creature, about modern day society. And then again,
- 5:32this movie pulls no punches. It's a revenge plot at some point,
- 5:36and these characters do things that a lot of mainstream movies I feel would not
- 5:42do. And that was such a breath of fresh air to see some of
- 5:46these things that you would see in movies in the eighties being done in a
- 5:49twenty twenty four film. So I give a high recommendation to Lisa Frankenstein.
- 5:55Argyle is That's gotta be top three worst movie I've seen of the year.
- 6:01Just just a mess of an action movie and such a damn shame because the
- 6:05cast is so talented and Bryce Stylis Howard's very likable in the movie. Sam
- 6:11Rockwell is one of my favorite actors of all time. The performances are good.
- 6:15It's just a clusterfuck of an action movie. I think this director,
- 6:17Matthew Vaughan is one of the most overrated directors, and apparently he's rumored to
- 6:21be directing the new James Bond movie, Stay Away from James Bond. Argyle
- 6:29brutal, brutal movie. Madam Webb, Oh, Madam Web. We've all
- 6:35seen the memes it was. It is what it is. Everyone knows this
- 6:40movie is trash. I don't know how a movie like this gets made.
- 6:45Taking a you know, a D list character in the Spider Man universe,
- 6:48and what did Sony think was going to happen. I don't understand why they
- 6:54keep making these Spider Man films without Spider Man, you know, the Venom
- 6:59movies. I guess mad Money, but Venom's a very popular character. Madam
- 7:03Web is not. And this movie is just awful. It's every single thing
- 7:10that the memes are telling you. It's poorly acted, it's poorly directed,
- 7:13the script is terrible. The villain is just non threatening and embarrassing the whole
- 7:18film, and everyone associated with Madam Web should be embarrassed. But honestly,
- 7:24there is some morbid curiosity with it. I had more fun with Madam Webb
- 7:29than I did with Argyle. Argyle has talent involved with it and should have
- 7:34been better where Madam Webb I was. I was just curious, like,
- 7:40while watching this movie, how did this get made? Why did this get
- 7:44made? So there was that form of you know, watching a train wreck
- 7:47happen and you know people can't look away, And I had that same fascination
- 7:53with Madam Webb. Up next was Bob Marley One Love, not the biggest
- 7:59Bob Marley, you know, I know his hits. I would not recommend
- 8:03this, I'm not really I'm really not a fan of the bio pick for
- 8:07musicians. I thought this movie did all the cliches that you get with these
- 8:11bio picks. With musicians. I you know, didn't care for that Elvis
- 8:18movie as much as a lot of people did, but at least that felt
- 8:20different. It had a certain style to it, had a certain flare.
- 8:24The director had a vision for it. This just felt like cut and paste.
- 8:28Will take all the greatest hits from these biopicks and make a generic film.
- 8:33Again, a lot of these things I think would be better as documentaries.
- 8:37I think a Bob Marley documentary would be more fascinating than this movie.
- 8:41Bob Marley One Love. Driveaway Donalds was a huge disappointment. The Coen Brothers
- 8:46are great directors. Now I know both Cohen's weren't involved in this movie,
- 8:50but I like the cast. I like the premise to an extent, but
- 8:54it fell short. It was actually probably my most disappointing movie of only twenty
- 9:00four. Cannot recommend Drive Away Dolls Ordinary Angels. On the other hand,
- 9:03I was crying my eyes out. This tells the story of a young girl
- 9:09who's battling a disease and she needs a kidney transplant I believe, or a
- 9:16liver transplant, some sort of transplant. Her dad is a single parent.
- 9:20His wife died from cancer and it's all based on a true story. And
- 9:26this one girl in the town. She's like, I'm gonna help this family
- 9:30played by Kira Who the hell Hillary Swank, That's who it was, played
- 9:35the woman, and she just wants to help this family. And it's such
- 9:39a breath of fresh air. And I know I've used that phrase before,
- 9:41but to get movies like this, there's so much negativity in the world,
- 9:45right and a lot of these movies prey on that negativity. They're you know,
- 9:48they're dividing the racist, they're dividing the country. You know, there's
- 9:52literally a movie coming out next week called Civil War. And to have something
- 9:56like this where a whole community comes together to help a little girl. I
- 10:01like seeing movies like this. I like to be uplifted after I leave the
- 10:05movie theater. And I felt good about myself in this movie. It has
- 10:07the tears, it has the emotion. Highly recommended Ordinary Angels Dune two I
- 10:15thought was good. I don't really care for the Dune franchise. I've said
- 10:20this before and I'll say it again. I need something to relate to in
- 10:22a movie. I need a character where I could latch onto or I need
- 10:26a character where I could say I know somebody that's sort of like this,
- 10:30Like we all know in Star Wars, We've all met somebody like Han Solo,
- 10:33you know, a grifter, a guy who was a ladies man.
- 10:37We all have met somebody like Luke Skywalker, somebody who's stuck at home and
- 10:39just wants to move away. Even though it's in a galaxy far far away,
- 10:45a long time ago, we could still relate to those characters. And
- 10:48in June. Although it's very impressive visually and it's definitely not a bad movie,
- 10:52I just needed somebody where I could go that's a recognizable thing, like
- 10:58I've dealt with something like that in my real world. It's very regal.
- 11:01It's very proper, very hard for a slub from Long Island to relate to
- 11:07anybody in the movie. But visually it is a masterpiece. The zone of
- 11:13interest. What is the zone of interest? I have no idea. Oh
- 11:20the zone of interest? Okay, yeah, this movie was This movie was
- 11:22really good. This was about a family in Germany. They're Nazis. It
- 11:26takes place during World War Two and they live right next door to a concentration
- 11:31camp. And this was, again a movie that I've seen nothing like before.
- 11:39It is in German, so it is subtitled. But I mean,
- 11:41what a fucked up concept that is. You know, this wife is flowering
- 11:46her plant, she loves her house, her husband's a Nazis, she has
- 11:50beautiful kids and you know, loving family. And then next door you just
- 11:54hear you don't never go inside the concentration camp. You just hear the the
- 12:00cries and that you see the smoke from the from the gash chambers. You
- 12:05see and hear the terror, but you're not in the terror. But just
- 12:09a really unique contrast of life. I was disappointed with the ending, I
- 12:18really was. I didn't deliver like some of these other movies, like American
- 12:22Fiction, the ending really delivered Late Night with the Devil a movie will get
- 12:26too later, Immaculate, another movie will get too later. All those endings
- 12:31delivered. This did not. But definitely a really good movie. Imaginary just
- 12:35another dumb horror movie. That's all I'm gonna say about that. I did
- 12:39see the re release of two films, Labyrinth and Field of Dreams, back
- 12:43to back. Never seen Labyrinth before starring David Bowie. Beautiful you know,
- 12:48Jim Jim Benson, Jim Henson, Puppets and Feel the Dreams is just It's
- 12:54probably the greatest sports movie not named Rocky. Arthur the King is a movie
- 13:01with Mark Wahlberg about an adventurer who's on some adventuring race team and he meets
- 13:07a dog. And I tries to do a lot of the cliches that you
- 13:11would see in movies like this, but to me, it didn't hit.
- 13:16It really didn't hit. You know, obviously, with a dog, there's
- 13:18gonna be this is the dog die. There's that sort of drama involved with
- 13:22that. Another movie that's based on a true story, a fine family film.
- 13:28Nothing again, you'd watch again. But I didn't leave the theater frustrated
- 13:35like I did with some of these other movies. Love Lies Bleeding is one
- 13:41of the most erotic films I've ever seen in theaters. I was alone in
- 13:46the theater. There's one other guy with his girl in the back and they
- 13:52He clearly didn't like it, because when I was leaving the theater, all
- 13:54I heard him say the one to no one else is in this theater.
- 13:56This movie sucked. I disagree. I really enjoyed this movie. It starts
- 14:01Kristin Stewart and she falls in love with another woman, a bodybuilder, and
- 14:09she has some daddy issues. There's there's murder, there's mystery, there's romance.
- 14:13It's very sexual. As I mentioned, I've again, I've never seen
- 14:18anything like it before, and I like that. You know, so many
- 14:20movies feel the same, all the superhero movies. That's the common critique.
- 14:24They all feel the same, they all end the same. You have two
- 14:26armies running at each other, cliche battle at the end. To see something
- 14:31like this that takes a risk, and maybe that's why that guy didn't like
- 14:35it, Because a lot of people are stupid and they only like things that
- 14:39they know, you know, that's the whole South Park member barriers. Oh,
- 14:41I remember this. I remember that. That's why I liked this.
- 14:45That's why I like that. No, try something new, and this movie
- 14:48took a lot of risks and I enjoyed it. Really really interesting film.
- 14:52Up next, Ghostbusters Frozen Empire. As a lifelong go Ghostbuster fan, you
- 15:01know, I love that original movie. I have a soft spot for the
- 15:03sequel. I know it's not good. And the damn phone is ringing in
- 15:07the middle of my is that the is that the Ghostbusters? They they're calling
- 15:11the Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters. This movie, it's it's just it's another member Barry's
- 15:18movie, just like the first one. Oh remember Sneimy, Slimy's back.
- 15:24I think this franchise needs to end. He just let's do new, Let's
- 15:31do some new stuff like the next movie I saw, Immaculate, starring Sydney
- 15:35Sweeney. Now, the first movie I reviewed starts Sidney Sweeney Anyone but You,
- 15:41and it was awful and she was miscasting that role. I think she
- 15:43was miscasting this role. She plays a nun who somehow gets pregnant, and
- 15:50again, risks are being taken. The ending of this movie is something I
- 15:54think is going to be talked about for a very long time. I wouldn't
- 15:58have casted Sidney Sweeny necessarily in this role. She's sort of like this,
- 16:02you know, ditsy, sort of blonde check. She doesn't really give none
- 16:06vibes. But I thought she did good in certain aspects. I think once
- 16:10she gets a role that i'm she has the potential. First, she's beautiful.
- 16:15Unfortunately, she's a nun in the movie, so you don't see any
- 16:18of her body, which I think is a big selling point for Sidney Sweeney.
- 16:22So I think she's trying to purposely show her acting chops and not play
- 16:26into her very large breasts. In my opinion, she should not be doing
- 16:32that. But she was fine in it. But the plot is interesting,
- 16:37man. You know, there's a lot of drama. How did she get
- 16:38pregnant? Is the church involved in this? Is? Is she actually giving
- 16:45birth to Christ? That's what the whole movie's about. Again. A really
- 16:51really good movie, and another horror movie that is actually my favorite movie of
- 16:55the year so far is called Late Night with the Devil, which takes place
- 16:59in the nineteen seven A talk show host a la Johnny Carson has some very
- 17:03bad ratings and on Halloween Night, he tries to amp up those ratings by
- 17:07inviting some paranormal guests onto his talk show. Such a breath of fresh air
- 17:14to see movies like this, man, to see films being filmed in ways
- 17:18that we've never seen films. This is all filmed like a seventies talk show.
- 17:22What a unique premise. There's been so many found footage films out there,
- 17:25but this one takes something that's been done but puts a very unique spin
- 17:30on it. Obviously, everything goes to shit. There's one girl that's possessed
- 17:33by the devil. There's one guy who tries to denounce all these things that
- 17:37are happening, and it's just it's shot uniquely, it's acted brilliantly. It
- 17:42all comes together with an ending that really delivers one of the best movies I've
- 17:48seen in years, one of the best horror movies I've ever seen, and
- 17:51definitely my favorite movie so far in twenty twenty four. But I did see
- 17:55a few more movies after that. One Life starring Anthony Hopkins, another concentration
- 18:00movie. I guess, these kids in Czechoslovakia in the nineteen thirties, they're
- 18:04gonna be, you know, sent to concentration camps. In Anthony Hopkins character
- 18:08in flashback scenes is trying to save as many kids as possible. And this
- 18:11is one that is actually based on a true story. So you get the
- 18:15flash forward moments of Anthony Hopkins as an old man sort of dealing with the
- 18:18guilt of not saving as many kids as he could have saved. And then
- 18:22it all comes to a head with a really heartwarming scene. I'm not gonna
- 18:26spoil much of it, but Anthony Hopkins is a great performance. It is
- 18:30a true story and it really delivers unlike a lot of these other things that
- 18:33I think it would have been more interesting, as you know documentaries, This
- 18:36would be a great documentary, but it's also a really good movie. So
- 18:38definitely check out One Life. Godzilla and Kanan just a tough movie. Man.
- 18:45That is a very very dumb There's one scene in this new Godzilla and
- 18:49Kong movie where there's a baby King Kong and King Kong picks him up and
- 18:53starts using him as a nun chuck. That's the type of movie. This
- 18:57is very stupid. And the last movie I saw so far this year in
- 19:03theaters was Dumb and Dummer. They re released it first thirtieth anniversary and just
- 19:07one of the greatest comedies of all time and delight that I never saw it
- 19:11on the big screen, and I loved seeing it on the big screen.
- 19:15So we're a third, fourth, fourth, way done with the year.
- 19:19I'm gonna do this every three months, so we recap the movies at the
- 19:23end of the year. We're gonna, you know, pick a top five
- 19:26best, top five worst. But this is sort of if you want to
- 19:30see something in theaters or maybe something is on demand now, just like a
- 19:33quick recap of what I would recommend, So just to recap the recap,
- 19:38movies I would recommend would be American fiction Lisa Frankenstein June two, Zone of
- 19:48Interest, love Lies, Bleeding Immaculate, and Late Night with the Devil,
- 19:53not including you Know the Queen Concert and you know the the re released films.
- 19:59Those would be the film I would recommend. But I will get into
- 20:02some more movie topics next time on Film Reel. Thank you all for listening
- 20:06so long.
