Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, Hello, Hi Emily.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Here.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Happy five minute Friday. I hope everyone had a good week.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I myself took a second to see some family and
- 0:29Speaker 2: get out of the city earlier this week. They live
- 0:32Speaker 2: out on eastern Long Island, and so spent some time
- 0:35Speaker 2: with Grandma, who is crushing life at ninety five.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I spear she has a better memory than me.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Got to hang out with my cousin and his wife
- 0:43Speaker 2: and there four and a half year old and just
- 0:46Speaker 2: take some space.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Which felt really good.
- 0:49Speaker 2: I have a confession, however, it made me feel a
- 0:53Speaker 2: little bit anxious that I didn't have a movement plan
- 0:56Speaker 2: for Wednesday morning.
- 0:57Speaker 1: It's one day, it's not a big deal.
- 0:59Speaker 2: But I have been so diligent in not only training
- 1:03Speaker 2: for the Chicago Marathon, which I'm running in October, but
- 1:06Speaker 2: also with my strength work over gosh, you know, as
- 1:11Speaker 2: long as I can remember now for the better part
- 1:13Speaker 2: at least of the last year. And yes, I take
- 1:16Speaker 2: days off. I'm not saying don't take days off. But
- 1:19Speaker 2: I was supposed to do two different things on Wednesday,
- 1:21Speaker 2: and I didn't do them. And I'm here to tell
- 1:24Speaker 2: you that it was fine.
- 1:26Speaker 1: It was fine.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I am sure in this highlight reel that is life.
- 1:31Speaker 2: You are keeping up with so many people on the
- 1:33Speaker 2: internet who it's like I must do this, and I'm
- 1:36Speaker 2: so hard and hustle culture and like I move my
- 1:40Speaker 2: body because it's me putting my oxygen mask on. I
- 1:42Speaker 2: move my body regularly because it makes me feel good
- 1:45Speaker 2: in my body.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And so, despite feeling a little bit anxious on Wednesday,
- 1:51Speaker 1: what I decided to do was reframe this. What if
- 1:56Speaker 1: I think about this as a beautiful moment to reset
- 1:59Speaker 1: my nervous system in different way. What if I simply
- 2:02Speaker 1: find the good all around me instead of worrying about
- 2:06Speaker 1: the things that I am without enjoying my hot cup
- 2:09Speaker 1: of coffee in this beautiful space with all of this
- 2:12Speaker 1: nature around me, watching the Billie Joel documentary, and then
- 2:16Speaker 1: ultimately yes, getting in a nice calm walk along the water.
- 2:22Speaker 1: It was perfect.
- 2:23Speaker 2: It wasn't what was on the plan, let's say, like
- 2:26Speaker 2: the training plan, but it was perfect. And sometimes I
- 2:31Speaker 2: know I need to say this to myself. I've just
- 2:34Speaker 2: got to be a little bit softer And me and
- 2:38Speaker 2: Shana Stevenson on this week's episode.
- 2:41Speaker 1: She's the chief brand officer for the New York Liberty.
- 2:43Speaker 2: We talk about this about romanticizing your life, and there
- 2:47Speaker 2: are going to be days where there are things out
- 2:49Speaker 2: of your control. There are going to be days where
- 2:52Speaker 2: you're out of your element. And so on those days,
- 2:55Speaker 2: I remind myself, and I'm here to share with you
- 2:58Speaker 2: that it's okay. We are the sum of the better
- 3:03Speaker 2: part of our actions. And what I mean by that
- 3:05Speaker 2: is one off day, it doesn't determine who it is
- 3:09Speaker 2: that you are, who it is that you will become.
- 3:12Speaker 2: What are you doing ninety five percent of the time.
- 3:16Speaker 2: So maybe right now you're in a season where you
- 3:18Speaker 2: too need to be a little softer with yourself. Maybe
- 3:21Speaker 2: right now you are confronting that voice that is telling
- 3:25Speaker 2: you that you should be doing X or y. Instead
- 3:31Speaker 2: of caving to that voice, I beckon you to ask
- 3:35Speaker 2: yourself what feels good for me today. I feel a
- 3:39Speaker 2: little silly telling you all this story. I know that
- 3:42Speaker 2: you know there's a lot more serious things going on
- 3:44Speaker 2: in the world, but it's on my mind, and so
- 3:48Speaker 2: I share it with you. My promt for you this week,
- 3:52Speaker 2: what is your gut telling you that you need right now?
- 3:56Speaker 2: What is your gut telling you that you need right now?
- 4:00Speaker 2: Before I get into this week's listener question. I'm putting
- 4:02Speaker 2: out a mass call. If you have never submitted one
- 4:05Speaker 2: before and you love five Minute Friday. You're listening to
- 4:08Speaker 2: this or shaking your head, I know it's you. I
- 4:11Speaker 2: want your question in my inbox. Email hello at Hurdle
- 4:14Speaker 2: dot us with a question that can be featured next
- 4:18Speaker 2: week on the show. And now this week's listener question.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Hey Emily, my name's Tammy. I'm a long time listener
- 4:27Speaker 2: of the show. I'm super interested about working for myself,
- 4:31Speaker 2: and although I think that I could be really good
- 4:33Speaker 2: at it, I'm actually really concerned about feeling really alone.
- 4:37Speaker 2: How do you stave off loneliness when you're working alone?
- 4:41Speaker 2: Does it ever get tiring? With love your input? Thanks
- 4:44Speaker 2: so much, Tammy. Oh, this is a good one. It
- 4:48Speaker 2: gets lonely, for sure. I think what I love about
- 4:51Speaker 2: the last few years is that I have really dove
- 4:56Speaker 2: headfirst into events, and all of those events are a better.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Part of those events include collaborating with different individuals and
- 5:05Speaker 2: different companies, and I get really excited about that opportunity
- 5:08Speaker 2: for collaboration. So while I yes am often building alone
- 5:14Speaker 2: and thinking alone and spending time on my own, I
- 5:19Speaker 2: look forward to the opportunity of how can I create
- 5:24Speaker 2: something that enables and empowers me to collaborate with others
- 5:29Speaker 2: bigger than that. Though, when I do feel really lonely,
- 5:32Speaker 2: I make it a point to spend time with people
- 5:35Speaker 2: that I care about and make plans in advance. So
- 5:39Speaker 2: by Tuesday, you ask me what I have on deck
- 5:42Speaker 2: for the weekend, and I have at least one to
- 5:44Speaker 2: two things that I'm looking forward to.
- 5:47Speaker 1: When I think.
- 5:48Speaker 2: About my morning routine, I love to give back to myself.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I love that time for myself, but I'm often linking
- 5:54Speaker 2: up with friends just to spend some quality time before
- 5:57Speaker 2: going into a day of solo work. I am fortunate
- 6:02Speaker 2: that with podcasting I get to talk with a lot
- 6:04Speaker 2: of really great people, but yes, it is predominantly a
- 6:08Speaker 2: solo act over here. I think it's also really important
- 6:12Speaker 2: to reflect on your feelings and be honest about your feelings.
- 6:15Speaker 1: So if I notice that.
- 6:16Speaker 2: I am feeling a bit overwhelmed, usually that's because I'm
- 6:21Speaker 2: not vocalizing how I'm feeling or what I'm dealing with,
- 6:24Speaker 2: and I'm.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Just trying to take it on solo.
- 6:26Speaker 2: A good friend said this to me last year, just
- 6:29Speaker 2: because you're a single member LLC does not mean that
- 6:32Speaker 2: you need to be doing this all by yourself.
- 6:35Speaker 1: And it's so true.
- 6:37Speaker 2: So I would say, get honest with where you're at,
- 6:40Speaker 2: make sure you've got really great people in your corner
- 6:42Speaker 2: that support you and are there to listen, and then
- 6:46Speaker 2: when the opportunities arise, collaborate solo.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Work, doing your own thing.
- 6:52Speaker 2: It's not for everyone, and that's the last thing I'll
- 6:55Speaker 2: say as a part of this answer. It's not there's
- 6:59Speaker 2: nothing wrong if you are the kind of person that
- 7:02Speaker 2: actually thrives with having the structure that comes with working
- 7:06Speaker 2: for another company.
- 7:08Speaker 1: However, if it.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Is for you, it can really open a lot of
- 7:13Speaker 2: doors in terms of flexibility and opportunity. You've just got
- 7:17Speaker 2: to really want it. So that's what I will say.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Make sure you are following along with Hurdle over on
- 7:24Speaker 2: social It's at Hurdle Podcast. I'm over at Emily Abadi
- 7:27Speaker 2: another Hurdle conquered. Don't forget to some of your listener questions.
