- 2:19[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to go check out a reform Baptist network that's have a their regional Get together down there and see if it'd be a good fit for the church.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_03]: Trying it out and trying it out for size.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sure it's going to be a
- 2:31[SPEAKER_03]: week of a lot of meetings and networking and connecting and questions and I'm hoping to have some time like so the guy that I'm going with he's not like he's not a water guy at all like he's he's he wish we're Norwegian which Baker mayfield no no if I was going with Colton we'd 100% hit the beach
- 2:52[SPEAKER_03]: going with uh i'm going with David David okay okay he's uh he's he's unlike most Norwegian he's he's not a water guy so i i'm hoping to be able to skidaddle over to the beach because floor to beaches man the water is so nice um we'll see what happens it's most likely gonna be a lot of meetings in in in cigar rooms and things like yeah which again i'm not
- 3:17[SPEAKER_03]: There's either way.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_03]: There's no kind of aint here, but yeah, definitely.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_03]: Looking forward to the trip.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_03]: I hope it's going to be good.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_03]: Not looking forward to flying, and I'm not looking forward to the heat because what is it in Florida right now?
- 3:32[SPEAKER_03]: It's got to be weather A's.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_03]: Where are we going?
- 3:36[SPEAKER_03]: Let's say, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_03]: What is it right now?
- 3:40[SPEAKER_03]: All right, it's 79, 79, not horrible, humidity is 90% that's going to hit you that is going to hit you so like a what napkins to write in the face 79 feels like a 103 in the song, so that I'm not looking for it to hopefully ever we go has as air conditioning because
- 4:04[SPEAKER_03]: This P and W guy does not Bro, I don't know.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_03]: I don't do it.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_03]: I don't like it either.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_03]: No, not worth it.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_03]: Not worth it.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_03]: Well, Jack.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_03]: We've got cool stuff to talk about today But it is time for everyone's favorite segment.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_03]: Don't forget to eat your Instagrams
- 4:23[SPEAKER_03]: And those of the time you've all been waiting for.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_03]: There are homemade dairy broadcast presents.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_03]: Don't forget to eat your instant grills.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_02]: With your host, Josh Loftus, on Jack Mary.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_03]: And remember kids, it's not heresy if you'll believe it hard enough.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_03]: this is, don't forget to eat your Instagrams and remember kids, it's not heresy.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_03]: If you believe it hard enough, that's how it works.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_03]: I really like our intro every time I hear it, it gets me, it gets me all happy.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_03]: I like the old timey, the old timey radio, it's awesome.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_03]: The old timey grifting.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_03]: I love it.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_03]: I love it.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_03]: It takes me back to simpler times, Jack.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_03]: Similar times, just like our first clip, back in the early 2000s, at least that's where
- 5:09[SPEAKER_03]: you know, united as a reformed front against what would be known as the emergent church movement back when back when we weren't dealing with Twitter debates back when we weren't dealing with with drama.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_03]: It was we were united on taking on the secret sense of movement.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_03]: And Jack, this is about as secret sensitive as it gets let me introduce
- 5:39[SPEAKER_03]: youth ministry.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_03]: And again, listeners, let me know how long you make it through the clip before you hit the skit button.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_04]: Take it to the cross, the Bible bays, you see these verses that's how I can say The Holy Ghost is like a crack.
- 6:16[UNKNOWN]: All right.
- 6:17[UNKNOWN]: All right.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_02]: Wow.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_02]: Wow.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_02]: Unbelievable.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_02]: I do this.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_03]: I swear.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_03]: Like this segment never, it never ceases to amaze me.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_03]: It never ceases to ask, to cause me to ask the question.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_03]: How did this make it past like the idea roundtable, right?
- 6:40[SPEAKER_03]: Like the pastors are getting together, you know, maybe with their, their, you know, the outreach team, the same way, you know, we fast 10 makes it to the screen.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_02]: And the movie theater, we need, we need another fin diesel movie with him.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_03]: We need a couple 16-year-old girls doing a horrible hip hop cover for our trip.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_03]: That's what we need of Justin Timberlake.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_03]: That's that's exactly.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_03]: That's that's to take that.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_03]: That's going to bring him in.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_03]: That's what we'll win him over.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_03]: That's what's going to win them over.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_03]: That's going to win them over.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_03]: Well, Jack, if you thought that was bad.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, gosh, here we go.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_03]: I have you.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I know you have.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_03]: When you when you
- 7:31[SPEAKER_03]: get into, you know, certain, I will say denominational circles, right?
- 7:38[SPEAKER_03]: The worship on the Lord's Day looks very different.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah, okay.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_03]: And what I have here is someone who hasn't an account,
- 7:49[SPEAKER_03]: where what they do is they train people, they make tutorials for those that are feeling led to express their worship through flags.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_03]: Oh no.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: Here's a one minute tutorial to help you know how to use worship flags and be confident with worship flagging movements.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: These are perfect worship flag moves for beginners.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_03]: Please like perfect worship flag flags for beginners.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_03]: I'm glad though because I'm a little flag or glass right now.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_03]: When it comes to when it comes to flag worship jack, I am indeed a beginner.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_03]: I'm very much a beginner.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_03]: Please teach me.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_03]: And this person's name, this person's account,
- 8:36[SPEAKER_03]: Like catch them fire.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if it's the fire that they think they want to catch.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sorry.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_03]: That's that's a little too far.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_03]: Let's continue.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_03]: Let's let's allow this person to help us out here.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_03]: Help us out.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: Please like and follow.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Andrea York with catch and fire worship flags.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: And this fighting movement tutorial is called ascending and descending.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: It looks as if it should be straightforward and yet it's a movement that actually creates quite tricky.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: I'll demonstrate from the side view.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: The starting position is both arms are extended in front of your body.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: One arm is above your head and the other arm is downward below your waist.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_00]: Next, alternate your arms keeping a straight line in front of your body.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: In first glance, it appears as if you are simply pumping your arms up and down.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_00]: That is exactly what it looks like.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_03]: That's it.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_03]: 100% 100% that's what it looks like that's what you're doing.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_03]: Why do we need a tutorial on this again?
- 9:22[SPEAKER_03]: Well, yeah.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_03]: she's talking so fast like if I at all actually had some interest in flagwork right like thinking of you know bringing some bringing I'm thinking to just bring in some light flag worship into redeemer reform Baptist Church right just to kind of test the waters see what it would be
- 9:46[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I'm definitely looking for tutorials because I've never done flag worship before, but this lady, I feel like she's she's going so fast.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to have to watch this two or three times.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_03]: Let's let's let's let's finish up with a tutorial here.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_00]: but doing that will cause the material to get bunched up and you'll run into a problem with tangled fabric.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: Instead, make it very elongated, figurates, turning your wrist very slightly at the top and the bottom.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: On the way up, the back of your hand is moving toward the sky, and on the way down, back of your hand is moving toward the ground.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: Please check out our other flighting to movement tutorials for movements to help you elevate your pace to the next level.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_02]: I'll wait for your phrase to the next level.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_02]: What are you talking about?
- 10:29[SPEAKER_02]: Blacks with flags.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_02]: I'll have flags in there.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to get all of a guy with a stop sign.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_02]: Just flip-sip to slow and stop, okay?
- 10:44[SPEAKER_03]: To use a generation Z phrase that I think is apropos to this.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_03]: This entire thing to me is a red flag.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_03]: It's a red flag.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_03]: Jack, this is not a green flag.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_03]: This is a red flag.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_03]: But hey, you know.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_03]: y'all if you're looking to up your work to elevate your worship game and you thought you know what I need you know what I need you know what I've been missing in the local church I've been missing lags man.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_03]: I've been missing flags.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_03]: This lady's got you covered dude.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_03]: She's got all you need.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_03]: She's got all the tutorials.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_03]: So shout out to the flag lady
- 11:24[SPEAKER_03]: Jack, my man, it's time to get serious.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_03]: Time to actually get to the business of the day, and as much as we enjoy poking fun at some of the weird local church stuff.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_03]: This is a podcast in which we try to be edifying.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_03]: And sometimes we see something.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes, you know, I don't know, not so sure.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_03]: Jump.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I don't know.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes I hit stop on the recording, and I just think, you know what?
- 11:54[SPEAKER_03]: That wasn't it.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_03]: That's not going to do nothing, but hey, we sold your on just like a, just like just like just like this lady's doing with her flex.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_03]: Sold your on jack.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_03]: My man.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_03]: We're talking about something that's very near and dear to my heart today.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_03]: We're talking about the importance of having a, a love and a care and an intentional focus upon the young adults.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_03]: in the local church.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_03]: Now, I think there's, you know, by and large, a lot of focus placed on, you know, men's and women's ministry, things like that, which is as it should be, wonderful, right?
- 12:31[SPEAKER_03]: This is not, we're not elevating one ministry or focus or demographic over the other in this episode.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_03]: But what we are saying,
- 12:40[SPEAKER_03]: is something that I have found, especially within kind of the reformed movement, is I think there is such an emphasis placed on equipping the men of the church, which is again a good thing, and a much emphasis placed on the family and family worship, right?
- 13:03[SPEAKER_03]: Those are things that
- 13:12[SPEAKER_03]: But one demographic that I have found by and large gets overlooked within a lot of churches that would be more on the reformed side is that of the young adult.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_03]: It's the single people.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_03]: that are in the local church, that are too old for traditional youth group or youth ministry, which is another big debate within reform churches, but that's not what this one's about.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_03]: But aren't in the stage of life yet where they're a father, or they're a mom, or they're married, right?
- 13:51[SPEAKER_03]: So you get this group of people in your local church is that are kind of right in the middle.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_03]: and they're kind of a, a, a forgotten demographic, a forgotten generation, if you will within the local church that by and large have a difficult time plugging into the local church finding their place in the local church because the local church has has in in many cases kind of forgotten them.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_03]: right now again we're not saying that it's uh that's the local church's job to provide you know avenues for every single demographic within the local church we understand that that's not realistic depending on what the demographic of your church is you know the Lord is calling you to focus on the things that you can focus on and sometimes like that's all you can do right and we do confess from from the the the the start right we're not we're not
- 14:50[SPEAKER_03]: This does not negate personal responsibility.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_03]: If you're a Christian and you're in a local church, like it is your responsibility to press in to find those opportunities to seek to know the community and to be known, right?
- 15:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_03]: We understand that's true.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_03]: However, it's not a bad thing for the local church to see and understand
- 15:11[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, we've got a demographic in our church that by and large has a difficult time plugging in because of the stage of life that they're in.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_03]: And it's important that we are intentional in seeking relationships with these individuals, right?
- 15:31[SPEAKER_03]: And I think Jack, before I throw it over to you just as this as a concept, I think this goes much deeper than simply having a programmatic solution to the issue.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_03]: I think having a young adult ministry, I think that can be great, and that can be really good, but just as with any ministry.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think you can just view the program as the end all be all fix it to the issue that we're seeing here.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_03]: So Jack, I want to throw it over to you.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_03]: This concept of young adults minister.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I'm sure you guys have this demographic in your church as well.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_03]: Would love to hear kind of your thoughts on on on this as we as we as we dive into it.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we actually have more of a.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_02]: I wouldn't say a program but we started a young adult's group as well within the last couple years and that's seen more ways to minister to
- 16:33[SPEAKER_02]: you know, people in there, you know, late teens, 20s, maybe early, early, 30s, single, maybe not married or trying to kind of navigate those waters.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_02]: Different thing youth, I would say that internationally youth is considered like past, like youth.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_02]: I've been to places, I've been
- 17:00[SPEAKER_02]: people who aren't married still.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_02]: So it's, I think it's a little bit different internationally, but young, uh, more young adults.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_02]: Um, it's an interesting time.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_02]: I was telling Josh about this.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_02]: Um, one of my pastor's quoted a stat recently that in the UK right now, um, men between the ages of 18 to 30 are going back to church at either a quadruple or quintuple level.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_02]: years before, like four to five times more likely to go to church than ever before, right?
- 17:38[SPEAKER_02]: And in the last, you know, have to be the last like 25 years.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_02]: So record number of younger men are starting to go back to church.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_02]: And with that as well, too, it's the same for Gen Z here in the United States where a lot more younger people are coming to church are exploring what it means to be a Christian are looking into the faith.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_02]: Um, and this was actually a good kind of segue as well into how do we meet those people that are looking and seeking?
- 18:15[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_02]: And one of my pastors really focused on one of our, um, values.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_02]: of our church, which is the gospel, obviously, our three values, our gospel community mission.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_02]: That's about it.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_02]: Pretty simple.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_02]: And in a three, which makes a lot of sense, very trinitarian.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_02]: But that verse in Matthew chapter 11, where Jesus says, come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_02]: I think that is true of a lot of different generations, and this generation is hearing those words of Jesus, and they are labored and are heavy-ladened because of, I think, the landscape that they see in front of them.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_02]: Digital landscape landscape of more advancing AI technology landscape in more of a way in which
- 19:20[SPEAKER_02]: You could say values are starting to creep in into different.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_02]: It's just so crazy to think I saw a video the other day of a Lutheran church just straight up like not even.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_02]: It's from a guy actually on Instagram who I think was living as a woman and now he really wants Jesus and really wants to pursue the Lord now.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_02]: And he's going on these different tours of different churches.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if he's seen him on Instagram, but we're not that that sounds familiar.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_02]: I think so might might have come across he went he went to a Lutheran church which is a which was a part of the ELCA which is one of the most liberal denominations of Lutherans in the United States and he was just like
- 20:05[SPEAKER_02]: There was no mention of Jesus, yeah, like there was like it was all social justice and this is not a person who's like Who's out there saying different like culture warrior things like this is a person who has gone through something and as far as like
- 20:24[SPEAKER_02]: more siding with trying to become a woman and then actually renting and going back towards no my god given you know sex and gender is male so I am going to go back there and it's because of my faith in Christ that I'm going back to what God made me in the beginning.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_02]: So it's just so crazy because people are wearing like gay pride flags straight across their shirts and like literally inviting this guy to go with them to a gay pride parade after church.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like what and he's like, I don't know what that was.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what that was.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, wasn't a church.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_02]: But it was so I think that that kind of experience.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_02]: And I think some other videos that I'm seeing, I think Gen Z is starting to see what we like to call.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_02]: You have the doctrinal distinctive and the cultural distinctive.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_02]: So the gospel, I think that Gen Z is wanting, that a lot of authors talk about this too, is that if you are not preaching the gospel doctorally and living that out in your church culturally, there is a breakdown of your understanding of that.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_02]: And that's literally my pastor was talking about even yesterday in that, too, is that we can't be going around calling and saying, we got to believe the gospel, we got to believe the gospel.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_02]: And we really don't even show up and live in a way in which we're providing that gospel refuge to each other and loving each other correctly in that way as well, too.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_02]: So I think Gen Z is starting to see the breakdown that's happened over the last years and maybe even our generation.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes I can't even see it.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_02]: I know the 90s generation of the Gen Xers.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_02]: I think they're messed up.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_02]: I think they got messed up with a lot of different ways in which
- 22:31[SPEAKER_02]: church was given to them and communicated to them?
- 22:34[SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_02]: I think millennials are kind of trying to figure out how do we not screw up with that last generation went through and actually go back to the sources of what we should be going back to, which is in more discipleship way.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_02]: of helping young adults and in their journey in the Christian faith.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I think Gen Z is now starting to realize, yeah, I think we need something better than those, I don't know, I want to say fundamentalist ways, but some of them are funding in a sense, or just really hokey, corny ways of trying to get people in the church.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, they're getting hit with both, right?
- 23:22[SPEAKER_03]: They're getting hit with, with extreme fundamentalism, right?
- 23:27[SPEAKER_03]: Or the other side, like that, that, that, individually you talked about, found out that Lutheran Church, right?
- 23:33[SPEAKER_03]: Just extreme liberalism that's coming from, uh, honestly, a hatred of God and a hatred of God's word.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_03]: And I think what people buy in large, I think what the older, and look, this is probably part for the course, right?
- 23:48[SPEAKER_03]: And that this, this probably happens in every generation.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_03]: Is I don't know if the older generation truly understands buy in large, the things that the young adults of our day and age are having to deal with, right?
- 24:01[SPEAKER_03]: Now, obviously, there's nothing
- 24:12[SPEAKER_03]: that what seems to be true is that the longer that we are on this earth, the farther away we're coming from the away from the word of God and the standard of truth, and the sins that were once, you know, still present and still manifesting themselves, but
- 24:35[SPEAKER_03]: there's so much more obvious and they're becoming more blatant, right?
- 24:40[SPEAKER_03]: Whereas back in the day, back in my parents' generation, the things that they were dealing with culturally are not the same things that we are dealing with culturally.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_03]: Now, again, the root of it is the same, right?
- 24:54[SPEAKER_03]: It's the sin nature, right?
- 24:55[SPEAKER_03]: That's still the same, but how it's manifesting itself, how it's describing itself, how it's working itself out in the culture is so much more blatant today.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_03]: than it was back then, right?
- 25:06[SPEAKER_03]: And I even think, like, like, I will talk to our young adults because my wife and I run the young adult ministry in our church, right?
- 25:15[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I love it.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_03]: It's so much fun, but sitting down talking to these young adults that come to us and say, hey, can I get your advice on this?
- 25:23[SPEAKER_03]: Can I get your advice on this?
- 25:25[SPEAKER_03]: The things that they are having to deal with in their time and place, in culture.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_03]: our heads and tails worse than what I was dealing with when I was in high school.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah, when I was in high school, the worst things that I was having to deal with were, you know, making sure, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you
- 25:42[SPEAKER_03]: not, you know, not sleeping with your girlfriend, not smoke and weed, right?
- 25:47[SPEAKER_03]: Not not drinking on, you know, on the weekends or, you know, racing your cars, things like that, which, you know, which honestly jack, like again, all still all still sin, all still things that we need to deal with compared to what these young adults are bringing to my living room,
- 26:12[SPEAKER_03]: It's, it's, it's heads and tails.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_03]: It's just like, it seems like, like, like, like, sesame street hour.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_03]: I got young adults coming to my, coming to my living room saying, hey, my friend, you know, deconstructed how, what's some advice about that?
- 26:29[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, I've got a friend who's transitioning and they're,
- 26:32[SPEAKER_03]: contemplating, you know, surgery, you know, top and bottom surgery, how do I navigate that?
- 26:37[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, oh my goodness gracious.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_03]: The things that you were having to deal with as an 18, 20, 21, 22 year old.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_03]: I never dealt with that.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_03]: You'd I never did.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_02]: And I was an unbelief too.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_02]: And then you're going into college.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_02]: I never dealt with that really.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_03]: Exactly.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_03]: And again, right?
- 26:55[SPEAKER_03]: Like,
- 26:58[SPEAKER_03]: The players change, but the war doesn't.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_03]: We understand that.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_03]: We're not saying that we are unacquipped to handle these things.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_03]: What we are saying is that the need for discipleship within the local church for these young adults is more important today than it ever has been.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_03]: Because they are coming up against not just, the things that you and I dealt with in high school.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, we still, obviously,
- 27:23[SPEAKER_03]: got a, you know, a play a biblical world view to that and the scripture is still the standard.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_03]: But dude, like, how do I navigate this friend making a life altering decision?
- 27:35[SPEAKER_01]: Come say if you, I did it.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_01]: You love me.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_01]: You'll accept me.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_03]: Bro, these young adults are going through the ringer, right?
- 27:44[SPEAKER_03]: And then like, here's a whole other thing,
- 27:53[SPEAKER_03]: in 2025.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_03]: Today, it is a nightmare for so many of these young adults.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, right.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_03]: Like, and I say it tongue and cheek, right, but, but I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I
- 28:12[SPEAKER_03]: I, I use the humorous point to get the, the humorous tone to get the point across back in my day.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_03]: Again, I feel like such an old man, but the, the things that I was trying to figure out is like, okay, obviously she's a believer, right?
- 28:26[SPEAKER_03]: Do we line up on all these things?
- 28:28[SPEAKER_03]: Do we line up on this the theological thing, this theological thing?
- 28:31[SPEAKER_03]: The people today are just trying to figure out if you're like a man or not.
- 28:37[SPEAKER_03]: Like are you are you actually a woman because I can't tell like dude, we're starting at a different level.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_03]: The need for discipleship in the local church for these young adults is so much more important than it ever has been.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_03]: and we cannot afford to just let these young adults that are coming into our church.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_03]: It's like you're saying, coming in with this interest, with this curiosity, like what is this church stuff?
- 29:07[SPEAKER_03]: What is this old truths that they're talking about?
- 29:09[SPEAKER_03]: Because I'm sick of the Facebook and the Instagram Reels and the TikTok lifestyle where it's just me, me, me, me gratification.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_03]: I'm looking for something deeper.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_03]: And we don't give them anything.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_02]: Well, yeah, and on top of it, too, like so many people who are on social media, the sociables right now.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think I sent you like a couple videos the other day.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_02]: This guy was like saying, well, I would say I'm a still a Christian man, but I'm gonna start that.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_03]: I saw that.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm not part of the way.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_02]: And I just really, yeah.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_03]: And by the way, what I mean by that is I'm not,
- 29:44[SPEAKER_03]: accountable to any local church whatsoever and I define what Christianity means to me.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you hear that?
- 29:50[SPEAKER_03]: That's what that means.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, areas.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_03]: Congratulations.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_03]: Congratulations.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_03]: You are following in the footsteps of many heretics before you.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_02]: Well, that.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, just like just that, even of itself, when people say stuff like that, I'm sure there's young adults that get posed with that all the time and people that they
- 30:11[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I'm a Christian.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, absolutely.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_02]: Well, what does that mean to you, like, right, do you go to, are you part of a local church or not?
- 30:18[SPEAKER_02]: And I think Gen Z starting to get wise to this, like I said, that, that doctrinal and cultural breakdown that we've seen so much of in churches and the breakdown in churches and even now on social media where your doctrine is not actually lining up culturally.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, not only in your in your in your in your faith, but also in how your church is set up as well, too.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_02]: So I think Genzi is starting to get wise to that.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_02]: And they're starting to ask more questions.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's good, actually, because I think for the longest time,
- 30:57[SPEAKER_02]: I wanted people to ask more questions.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_02]: I wanted more younger people to ask more questions.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_02]: And now it seems like it's a no-hold, like the gloves are off in a sense, which I like, which is good.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, just even the starting block,
- 31:15[SPEAKER_02]: problems that these folks are going through are completely different.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_02]: Then I mean, I was dating my wife who was my who we got married in 2020.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_02]: We were dating through the majority of 2020.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_02]: So we dated from 20 end of endish of 2019 right around fall time.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_02]: So right around this time all the way up until when we got married in December 2020.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_02]: And I will say that is a
- 31:46[SPEAKER_02]: everybody was kind of in their own, like kind of little circle, not branching out.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_02]: We weren't doing a lot of social stuff, we were kind of sticking to a certain group of people so we wouldn't get sick and stuff like that.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_02]: And that is a different mentality than what we have now again, where it's just like full tilt.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, everything's back to normal.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_02]: We go.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_03]: Well, and both both of you were like both of you had already lived some life.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, too.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_03]: Like you guys weren't weren't fresh going into this.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_03]: Like you both have had a lot of life experience, right.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_03]: And you guys you guys got together a little a little later than than than the the traditional like
- 32:35[SPEAKER_03]: You know, but now imagine you're you're in 2020 trying to date somebody and it's 18-year-old Jack 19-year-old Jack.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, with the life experience that you have.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_03]: Right?
- 32:48[SPEAKER_03]: I can't imagine, too.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_02]: I can't if I was that if I was if I was a new believer.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I was it I would it would it would have been it would have threw me for a loop for sure.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_03]: And what's crazy is buy and large in in all in so much of the conversations I have with the young folks at Redeemer.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_03]: They have such a hunger for the truth.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_03]: They have a desire to know God more.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_03]: And by and large, the vast majority of them have said to me, in one instance or another, I've never had a situation in a local church.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_03]: where I was friends with my pastors and that my pastors actually took personal time to disciple me through these things.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_03]: I've never had that.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_03]: That's something that's brand new to me.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_03]: And there's the problem, right?
- 33:53[SPEAKER_03]: It's not that Lauren and I are doing this amazing, crazy, awesome work.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_03]: It's not that Redeemer is the super special church, although I think it's very special.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_03]: I love our people.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_02]: My church often says, we're not, we're not KFC.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_02]: We don't do chicken, right?
- 34:08[SPEAKER_03]: Exactly, exactly, exactly, right?
- 34:12[SPEAKER_03]: But this, here's the problem, is the local church
- 34:17[SPEAKER_03]: in America, by and large, has a discipleship deficiency.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_03]: And we don't take discipleship seriously like we should.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_03]: And in the context in which these young adults are living their lives, right, spreading their wings coming into their own looking for relationships.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_03]: If they do not have the foundation of what is the gospel, what is true,
- 34:46[SPEAKER_03]: What place should the Word of God take in our lives?
- 34:50[SPEAKER_03]: If they don't have that foundation, this world is going to eat them up and it's going to spit them out.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_03]: And like the whole deconstruction movement is just a testament to not not not strictly the churches, like the people's trauma from church, although that is definitely part of it,
- 35:13[SPEAKER_03]: In my opinion, a testament to the lack of discipleship that the church should be having in our, in the lives of our people, on top of it too, like the whole deconstruction movement.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's deconstructing a faith that is by and large filtered through the lens of fundamentalism.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, or, or, or culturalism.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_02]: I think most of the people that do, yeah, most of the people that have deconstructed their faith were in a church in the United States that we saw that had some sort of fundamentalist background and when they didn't tie themselves to a historic to historicity of the church, to show that, hey, what we're talking about
- 36:04[SPEAKER_02]: all these guys have talked about before before us.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_02]: You want to go back.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_02]: You want to go back to the beginning of the church.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_02]: Do you want to go back to the apostolic era of the church or continue that?
- 36:17[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's, I think that's what saved me honestly because I, I wouldn't say I had a crisis of faith.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_02]: I would say the fact that leaders did not tie doctrine and culture
- 36:32[SPEAKER_02]: there's a there's a doctrine side of the gospel and there's a culture side of the gospel as well when those two aren't tied together in a church that's when breakdowns start happening where people start saying yeah well i'm i'm deconstructing because they're not seeing the gospel being lived out amongst the church because their leaders aren't displaying it or the doxie or the practice you have to live out your doctrine yeah right like you have to
- 36:57[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I think part of it is because it's not the whole kitten caboodle, I think, I think what you're saying, the discipleship element to it, but also the fact that some people who say that they deconstructed, honestly, their deconstruction is from a from a a faith background that has some really wonky stuff to begin with anyways.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_03]: So, well, yeah, I mean, here's here's the thing, right?
- 37:21[SPEAKER_03]: Like, let's go back to the, let's go back to the parable.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_03]: The wise man built this house on the rock, the foolish man built it on the
- 37:28[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and when the foolish man built on the sand when he was faced with the hardships of life when he was faced with crisis of faith when he was faced with people that sinned against him, whatever these wins and waves and rains that come crashing against his house of faith, deconstruction, destruction is what happens because your foundation is faulty, it's not based on anything that's true, not based on anything that's solid.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_03]: it's based on man's opinions or it's your own morality or cultural definition, whatever it may be, it's not the truth of the word of God, it's not the gospel.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_03]: And the young adults of today's age, their house of faith is getting smacked upside the head with so much junk.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_03]: They need a foundation.
- 38:20[SPEAKER_03]: They need to know, what is the word of God say about this?
- 38:23[SPEAKER_03]: What is say about this?
- 38:25[SPEAKER_03]: What is it say about this?
- 38:26[SPEAKER_03]: And why should I care?
- 38:28[SPEAKER_03]: Baseline stuff, the word of God is our authority.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_03]: It's what we go to.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_03]: It's what dictates our practice, right?
- 38:37[SPEAKER_03]: We need this in the local church.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_03]: And we need faithful men and women that are willing to come alongside our young adults and walk with them and say, hey, I want to meet with you.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_03]: I want to be in a brother's sister relationship with you, right?
- 38:59[SPEAKER_03]: This is what we need.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_03]: Because like I said, by and large, in my experience, they want that.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_03]: They want real relationships.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_03]: They don't want the fake stuff that comes from social media.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_03]: And us, you know, Gen X and us Millennials.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_03]: I think got to get our heads out of our rear ends a little bit and start seeing that and you got to start as again millennial like it's going to be our job to get uncomfortable and be okay with reaching out and get out of your own head get out of your own bubble that we love to put ourselves in.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_03]: And start coming alongside these guys and these gals because they need they need People they need discipleship so that they can do it with the next generation like this is how the church is built Right right this is what what Paul encourages Timothy in and in second Timothy I think it's chapter three where he's like, you know these truths that you have known since infancy Like you were raised in these things
- 40:10[SPEAKER_03]: And because you have the foundation, then go and do this, preach this, don't do this, right?
- 40:15[SPEAKER_03]: So Jack, like our young adults are hungry, man, and they need people around them.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_03]: And we need to do a better job as a church of fostering that culture of discipleship.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there's a, when I was just when we were finishing up pastors and leaders in institute at my local church, we are our pastoral staff, our, our, basically, our plurality of elders said, yeah, hey, um, one of our pastors said,
- 40:51[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, you know, there's a famous quote by a guy who started the, the, um, the navigators.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if you know what the navigators are.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_02]: It kind of started mostly in the military.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of more based around that where it's Bible study and, and discipleship, uh, mostly around kind of military bases and stuff like that.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_02]: But the founder of the navigators, his name was Dawson Trotman said, um, give me a man.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_02]: uh... which he was basically saying give me a man to disciple like that should be if you are a christian man and you're you're not discipling somebody give me a man like that should be in your head chewing you up because somebody is out there who is clueless to say the least somebody who is not equipped sometimes to take on all of life's
- 41:50[SPEAKER_02]: and ups and downs.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_02]: And they need somebody to come alongside them to disciple them.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_02]: In order to say, hey,
- 42:00[SPEAKER_02]: This historically is how it's always been or, you know, hey, you know, the, the gospel is more than this or the gospel is not just something that we do in church.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the gospel is something that you live out every single that you don't graduate something that I always say to which others say, you don't graduate from the gospel right gospel has to be central to your person as a believer in Jesus.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_02]: Um, yeah, it was just, uh, I think that that's what we need to kind of start looking at is, um, this, where can I, where can I help out?
- 42:43[SPEAKER_02]: Where can I be a true partner in the Lord Jesus to help somebody who's coming into our local church?
- 42:53[SPEAKER_02]: to not necessarily be the master or the teacher.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_02]: But in a way to say, hey, I've been following Jesus for 20 years.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_02]: Actually, next year for me, it'll be 20 years.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, I think I've seen it thing or two.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I know that you can speak into my life as well, too, in this, but hey, let's let's go on this journey.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, to keep in step with the spirit in this certain way.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_02]: And it's just as easy as, you know, meeting, it could be meeting every week, meeting every other week.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_02]: It could be very informal.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_02]: It could be very formal.
- 43:33[SPEAKER_02]: You guys can do read a smaller book, a bigger book.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_02]: I basically have asked a guy recently.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, hey, do you want to start reading the nine marks book, The Gospel, which talks about this divide between
- 43:47[SPEAKER_02]: doctrine and the doctrinal distinctives of the gospel and the cultural distinctives of the gospel and how there shouldn't be a gap between that and very receptive to that because he got he got baptized last Easter has been in a family that has kind of been spiritually
- 44:09[SPEAKER_02]: agnostic a little bit, but leans more towards Christianity, but doesn't really care about what denomination that is, or even what doctrinal districtives you hold to.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, there's stuff like that that people need help with, because doctrine matters, theology matters, a lot of things matter in the Christian faith.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_02]: And if you don't have people who have seen a thing or two,
- 44:36[SPEAKER_02]: and are at least, you know, holding the lamp all your behind them in the cave, it's going to be a rough go.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_03]: So, well, and they need to know, and I'll wrap up with this, if they are going to hold fast to the Word of God as they should.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_03]: this culture is going to be against them, their friends are going to abandon them.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_03]: This culture will be angry at them.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_03]: They will be reviled.
- 45:11[SPEAKER_03]: They will be discouraged.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_03]: They'll be made fun of.
- 45:17[SPEAKER_03]: They'll be ostracized because that's what this culture does to those that are in Christ.
- 45:27[SPEAKER_03]: They need to know they have a place that's safe to come back to where there is relationships and there are people that love them, because it's very discouraging as a young adult, taking a stand for the Word of God, losing the vast majority of your friends, and then being alone, that doesn't have to be the way that it is.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_03]: the church needs to come us alongside these men and women that are testing out their faith for the first time, they're going to get punched in the face, real hard.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_03]: They need to know that they have safety, security, relationships in this local church with people that are not going to abandon them, that love them, that care about them and are committed to them because they're not going to get that in the world.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_03]: it's we desperately need it.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so churches love your young adults.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_03]: Come alongside them.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_03]: Whether that is, you know, creating a young adult ministry or simply just like like I said, like the members let the membership have this desire to come alongside, right?
- 46:44[SPEAKER_03]: Every Paul needs a Timothy, every Timothy needs a Paul.
- 46:48[SPEAKER_03]: and have that, that culture of discipleship in the local church, that's really what makes the difference.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so that's what we need.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_03]: Jack, my dude, what we need to do right now is close this episode because we have Patreon episodes to get to.
