Transcript
- 0:00Chapter 8 From the book of Esther, the King's edict in
- 0:05behalf of the Jews. That same day, King Xerxes gave
- 0:09Queen Esther the estate of Hammond, the enemy of the Jews,
- 0:13and Mordecai came to the presence of the king, for Esther
- 0:17had told how he was related to her.
- 0:20So Esther was actually Mordecai's cousin, and he had
- 0:24taken her in because her parents died.
- 0:28The king took off his signet ring, which he had reclaimed
- 0:31from Haman, and presented it to Mordecai, and Esther appointed
- 0:36him over Haman's estate. Esther again pleaded with the
- 0:40king, falling at his feet and weeping.
- 0:43She begged him to put an end to the evil plan of Haman the
- 0:48Agite, which he had devised against the Jews.
- 0:52Then the king extended the gold scepter to Esther, and she arose
- 0:57and stood before him. If it pleases the king, she
- 1:00said, and if he regards me with favour and thinks it's the right
- 1:04thing to do, and if he is pleased with me, let an order be
- 1:08written over ruling the despatches that Haman sung of
- 1:13Hamadatha the Agite devised and wrote to destroy the Jews in all
- 1:18the King's provinces. For how can I bear to see
- 1:23disaster fall on my people? How can I bear to see
- 1:26destruction of my family? King Xerxes replied to Queen
- 1:30Esther and to Mordecai the Jew. Because Haman attacked the Jews.
- 1:36I have given his estate to Esther, and they have impaled
- 1:40him on the pole he set up. Now write another decree in the
- 1:44King's name in behalf of the Jews, as seems best for you, and
- 1:50seal it with the King's signet ring, for no document written in
- 1:55the King's name and sealed with his ring can be revoked.
- 2:00I thought that was really an important statement there, that
- 2:05the. This happened the same way in
- 2:07the Book of Daniel as well with Nebuchadnezzar.
- 2:09I mean, whatever edict they presented are are put into law,
- 2:14could not be repealed. And so he's not repealing this
- 2:19law that the Jews could get annihilated, but he's doing
- 2:22something different and he's allowing Mordecai the Jew to
- 2:25write it so that it can, I guess, counterbalance what was
- 2:30happening. So at once the royal secretaries
- 2:34were summoned on the 23rd day of the third month, the month of
- 2:40Sivan, and that's kind of in the May or June time frame.
- 2:44If you want to look at the Hebrew months or the the see the
- 2:49different months and what they were named and what they relate
- 2:52to in the Gregorian calendar, the best calendar to do that is
- 2:57DSS calendar.org. It has the Essenes calendar, so
- 3:02it's a great reference if you want to check that out.
- 3:05So they wrote out all Mordecai's orders to the Jews and to the
- 3:09say traps, governors and nobles of the 127 provinces stretching
- 3:15from India to Kush. I mean, this is a huge area, 127
- 3:20provinces, and it's going all the way from India to Kush in in
- 3:24Egypt. These orders were written in the
- 3:28script of each province and the language of each people and also
- 3:33to the Jews in their own script and language.
- 3:36Mordecai wrote in the name of King Xerxes, sealed the
- 3:40dispatches with the King's signet ring, and sent them by
- 3:44mounted couriers who rode fast horses especially bred for the
- 3:49king. The King's edict granted the
- 3:52Jews in every city the right to assemble and protect themselves,
- 3:58to destroy, kill and annihilate the armed men of any nationality
- 4:04or province who might attack them and their women and
- 4:08children, and to plunder the property of their enemies.
- 4:14The day appointed for the Jews to do this in all the provinces
- 4:18of King Xerxes was the 13th day of the 12th month, the month of
- 4:24Adar, which was February or March in the I guess the Essenes
- 4:31calendar. If you look at that, Adar
- 4:33stretches between February and March Doesn't fit our months
- 4:37exactly. A copy of the text of the edict
- 4:41was to be issued as law in every province and made known to the
- 4:46people of every nationality so that the Jews would be ready on
- 4:50the day to avenge themselves on their enemies.
- 4:54The couriers riding the royal horses went out, spurred on by
- 4:58the King's command, and the edict was issued in the citadel
- 5:01of Susa. And that's modern day Iran.
- 5:07The I think it's Iran, or maybe it's Iraq.
- 5:10I can't remember now. I need to look that up.
- 5:12But I'll just say I should have looked this up first today.
- 5:19Where is Susa today? It is in southwestern Iran.
- 5:24That's where Susa is located. OK.
- 5:27The triumph of the Jews. When Mordecai left the King's
- 5:29presence, he was wearing royal garments of blue and white, a
- 5:34large crown of gold, and a purple robe of fine linen, and
- 5:40the city of Susa held a joyous celebration for the Jews.
- 5:45It was a time of happiness and joy, gladness and honor.
- 5:50In every province and in every city to which the edict of the
- 5:54king came. There was joy and gladness among
- 5:56the Jews with feasting and celebrating.
- 6:00And many people of other nationalities became Jews
- 6:05because fear of the Jews had seized them.
- 6:09That's really interesting. That last statement is
- 6:12interesting to me. And many people of other
- 6:14nationalities became Jews because fear of the Jews had
- 6:19seized them. They're seeing this triumph as
- 6:23if you recall in the prior chapters, Haman's wife and his
- 6:28advisors told him that, you know, if you're going against
- 6:34the Jews, you might want to rethink that.
- 6:37And that seems to when God is with the Jews, because he chose
- 6:42the Israelites as what we have to remember.
- 6:44And when God is with them, when when they have not forsaken him
- 6:48and when they are close to him, God is there and God protects
- 6:53them. And it's only in times where
- 6:56they depart from God that they do not seek success.
- 7:00But whenever God is with them, they see success.
- 7:04So this is something that you know, and God doesn't show
- 7:07favoritism. He did choose the Jews as his
- 7:10elect people, his chosen people. But that doesn't mean that the
- 7:15Jews are his favorite people. Because it's very clear in the
- 7:19Bible that God's Kingdom is intended for all nations, but,
- 7:23and, and the way God treats the Jews would be the same for those
- 7:29who show love back to God. God protects.
- 7:32He's shown that through his people.
- 7:35And if he doesn't have favoritism, that means that the
- 7:37way he treats the Jews is the way that he would treat anyone
- 7:42who is repentant and turns to him and trust in him.
- 7:47God is our protector. That goes for the Jews and for
- 7:50all nations, everyone who turns to him.
- 7:52And I think that's something that we all need to remember.
- 7:55So I will read the questions and answers for chapter 8 and then
- 8:00that'll wrap up for today. So why did Esther still have to
- 8:05plead with the Xerxes? Esther was making her general
- 8:09request from Chapter 7 more explicit, drawing Xerxes
- 8:14attention back to the larger issue at hand.
- 8:17The decree Haman had written and sealed with the King's signet
- 8:20ring was still in effect, even though Haman was dead.
- 8:24The immediate threat to Mordecai had been averted, but the Jews
- 8:28were still facing annihilation. By extending his scepter, Xerxes
- 8:33indicated his favor favorable response to her plea.
- 8:37Why couldn't the king change his own decrees?
- 8:40A royal decree 1 written in the King's name and sealed with his
- 8:45ring, was irrevocable even by the king.
- 8:50This had been done. This had been a fact of Persian
- 8:53law for generations, and it shows.
- 8:56Yeah, it references Daniel chapter 6, verse 12.
- 9:00The most that could be done to counter such a decree was to
- 9:05write another decree that would supersede the previous one,
- 9:09which is precisely what Xerxes allowed Esther and Mordecai to
- 9:13do. Was there time to get the new
- 9:16orders delivered before the slaughter?
- 9:18Yes, easily. The royal secretaries translated
- 9:22the King's edict into the languages of every people and
- 9:27province. Something they were organized to
- 9:30do. They wrote the new edict on the
- 9:3223rd day of the third month, sealed the documents and sent
- 9:37them to 127 provinces extending from Egypt and Greece on the
- 9:43West to India on the east. The couriers of Persia were the
- 9:47fastest known at that time. They raced out on swift royal
- 9:52horses, and even if they encountered such obstacles as
- 9:56rough terrain, bad weather, and danger from bandits and
- 9:59guerrilla forces, they would have reached the furthest
- 10:03provinces in about 3 weeks, which was still more than eight
- 10:07months before the decree of before the decreed date of
- 10:12annihilation. The 13th day of the 12th month
- 10:16that was referenced in Chapter 3.
- 10:19Why was this date chosen For the Jews to avenge themselves and
- 10:23their enemies? The 13th of Adar, the 12th
- 10:26month, was the date that Haman had set for the slaughter of the
- 10:31Jews throughout the empire. So Mordecai chose the date for
- 10:36execution of his edict granting the Jews the right to defend
- 10:39themselves. Haman had set the date by per
- 10:43per the casting of the dice. But it was obvious that there
- 10:46was a power greater than mere chance at work on behalf of the
- 10:50Jews. The turn of events was a
- 10:54delicious irony for the Jewish people.
- 10:57How could a non Jew become a Jew?
- 11:01To become a Jew meant to accept and obey the entirety of Jewish
- 11:06ceremonial, civil and moral law and that's founded Numbers
- 11:11chapter 15 verses 14 through 16. Some of those laws would have
- 11:16been irrelevant while the Jews were in exile due to the lack of
- 11:22a temple are an autonomous government.
- 11:25However, many would still apply, including circumcision and
- 11:31observance of holy days and dietary laws.
- 11:35The fear of the Jews mentioned here was not the fear of Jewish
- 11:38aggression. Since the edict only permitted
- 11:42the Jews to protect themselves. It was more likely an odd
- 11:46recognition that the Jews had been granted divine favor and
- 11:50protection. That's very similar to like the
- 11:53fear of the Lord just recognizing the power that's
- 11:57behind God and what can happen and and and realizing like it's
- 12:04it's not good to go against God. It doesn't go well for people
- 12:08and people should see that in God is his intention is to
- 12:14eliminate sin before he enters. I mean in his Kingdom there will
- 12:21be no sin, The eventual Kingdom that will that will come to
- 12:26earth after the 1000 years that Jesus reigns here on earth.
- 12:30So there is some period of time that still is yet to come where
- 12:34Jesus reigns on the earth. And it does seem like there is
- 12:37some teaching that happens during that time and a
- 12:39restoration, especially for the Middle East.
- 12:44And we will, we will see what happens or how that all unfolds.
- 12:49But we're certainly living in very interesting times.
- 12:52And it's somewhat ironic about these dates.
- 12:57And you have to wonder if these things are not wonder, but you
- 13:02know, you see coincidences and you start thinking that it's not
- 13:06just coincidences. God is behind these things.
- 13:10And I did see something about the date that Khamenei was
- 13:17eliminated. The Ayatollah Khamenei was
- 13:21eliminated in Iran recently, and ironically, it's during this
- 13:25time. But there's a different date
- 13:28system that is used in Iran, apparently.
- 13:32I've been seeing this on social media.
- 13:35And the irony of it all was that the date that he was eliminated
- 13:38was 9/11. So it was very much like what we
- 13:44talked about in the last chapter.
- 13:46Whereas you reap what you sow That area had targeted the
- 13:54United States on 9/11, and now this is coming back on 9/11.
- 14:00And is that a strange coincidence?
- 14:03I don't think it was planned out like that.
- 14:04It just happened to be that way. But it also, to me, shows the
- 14:08Providence of God, like God, does not let evil continue.
- 14:13God will stop evil and and he is behind he is in control and it's
- 14:19not always a pleasant time of going through it.
- 14:22But Jesus said in this world you will have trouble but trust, you
- 14:26know, believe in me because I've overcome the world so or have
- 14:31faith because I've overcome the world.
- 14:33So if we put our keep our eyes are focused on Christ and his
- 14:37promises, the promises of God and that there is tribulation in
- 14:42this world, but just keep focused on the long range plan
- 14:47of God because God said it will happen and it will happen.
- 14:51And if if a person is not reconciled with God, if a person
- 14:56feels just distant from God, now is certainly a wonderful time to
- 15:02reconcile with God. God is very merciful and
- 15:07forgiving. And if we have stepped away from
- 15:10God, this would be a the perfect time to talk to God about this
- 15:16and ask for his forgiveness. And if you are truly sincere
- 15:21about that, that you and and repent of it, it's doesn't mean
- 15:24just ask for forgiveness. That means stop doing whatever
- 15:28it is that you've been doing that is offensive to God that
- 15:32God doesn't agree with. You need to stop and you can get
- 15:36power to overcome that from God through the Holy Spirit.
- 15:41So if you haven't asked Jesus for the Holy Spirit, of course
- 15:46you have to believe that Jesus died on the cross for all of us
- 15:51and his, his death and his resurrection.
- 15:53He is living, but he is not like in this world right now, but he
- 15:57is in the heavenly realms right now.
- 15:59But he will return to the world. But he is alive and he is seeing
- 16:04all of this, the everything that's going on right now.
- 16:07And there's an appointed time by God the Father for his son Jesus
- 16:11to return. And it'll be a time of
- 16:13judgement. But all of us need to be
- 16:16prepared before Jesus returns. And that preparation is not with
- 16:21all of our, with her money and our shelter and all of the
- 16:25survival skills. None of that.
- 16:27It's simply to turn away from sin, to turn back towards God,
- 16:33reconcile the relationship with God and humble ourselves in a
- 16:39trust in God and let God guide us.
- 16:42Ask God for guidance, for protection, and for salvation.
- 16:47That's what I call the GPS guidance, protection and
- 16:50salvation. And that's the only thing that's
- 16:53that's needed here. If we trust in God, he will
- 16:55provide for anything that we need.
- 16:58And it's really, I mean, there's too much going on in the world
- 17:02to be lukewarm with your relationship with God.
- 17:06And it needs to be strong. And we need to be able to hear
- 17:11from God through the Holy Spirit, which we can.
- 17:13When we have the Holy Spirit, we can hear from God.
- 17:16I mean, Jesus even prayed before he was died on the cross, He
- 17:21said Father, he prayed for everyone.
- 17:23He said something to the effect of I want them to be one with us
- 17:29as we are 1. So I believe that that is the
- 17:33Holy Spirit, that the Holy Spirit within us is that
- 17:37connection with the Father and the Son.
- 17:39Throughout Jesus's time here on earth, He said that he only
- 17:42spoke what he saw the Father doing for him.
- 17:44That's that connection from the Holy Spirit.
- 17:46That's that communication that we receive when we have the Holy
- 17:50Spirit. And if people haven't told you
- 17:52about the Holy Spirit, it's really the only way that we
- 17:56receive the Holy Spirit is through faith.
- 17:59And Jesus is the one. It's Jesus said that I will ask
- 18:02the Father, and then I will give you the Holy Spirit.
- 18:04But Jesus is the one who gives the Holy Spirit.
- 18:07So you cannot circumvent Jesus. Anybody who tells you a
- 18:11different way of salvation is not telling you the truth, the
- 18:15only way. Jesus said it very clearly that
- 18:18when he said I am the way, the truth and the life, and no one
- 18:21comes to the Father except through me, it's only through
- 18:25Jesus. In the book of Hebrews it says
- 18:27that without the sacrifice, without the shedding of blood,
- 18:30there is no forgiveness of sin. That's why Jesus had to die on
- 18:34the cross, because he was the ultimate sacrifice.
- 18:37He was perfect animals, and all those other sacrifices that
- 18:40happened before were only temporary solutions.
- 18:43But that's why Jesus, God himself, God in the flesh, had
- 18:47to come to the earth to sacrifice himself.
- 18:52There's no greater love than to lay one's life down for another.
- 18:57That's exactly what Jesus did for all of us.
- 18:59It was out of love that He gave His life so that we who accept
- 19:05Him will be in His Kingdom forever and will receive an
- 19:09inheritance from the Father. And there's a promise of that as
- 19:14well. So there's all these good things
- 19:17that God is offering for people, but people need to respond to
- 19:21God and respond to God because time is does feel like it's
- 19:26getting short. If you haven't subscribed to
- 19:29this channel, I ask that you do just stay in the word because
- 19:33faith grows by hearing the word, the word about the gospel and,
- 19:37and everything that God's written here, I believe is, you
- 19:40know, it increases our faith. So I try to do this every day.
- 19:44And if you feel that this podcast was helpful in any way,
- 19:47please share it with others because ultimately it's it's all
- 19:52about getting more people into God's Kingdom and reconciling
- 19:56people to God and having that establishing that relationship
- 20:00with God. So thank you.
