- 2:34I do want to mention this real quickly. One news note before we get
- 2:37into the show. Late yesterday the announcement came from City Hall that Mayor Goodwin
- 2:42has chosen a new police chief for the City of Charleston. At press conference
- 2:45is scheduled for noon today at City Hall where the new Chief of Police for
- 2:47Charleston will be introduced. I can tell you that I already had the new
- 2:52chief schedule on the show. He will be on the show. This is
- 2:55coming Tuesday, and of course our news team will be covering that press conference.
- 3:00It's at noon today and full details will be made a little at that
- 3:04time on the air and online before we get to hand of Gardner. Yesterday,
- 3:07just before airtime, we learned of some massive job layoffs here at the
- 3:10Mountain State and they're in the Weirden area at the plant there operated by Cleveland
- 3:15Cliffs. Now you may be wondering what that has to do with here.
- 3:19Well, anytime that you lose nearly a thousand jobs anywhere in West Virginia,
- 3:23it's big news. Senator Ryan Weld, who serves that area, joins us
- 3:28now to talk about it briefly. Senator, good morning, Welcome to the
- 3:30show. Hey, good morning, Dave, Thanks for having me, Thanks
- 3:31for being here. What can you tell us this morning? This announcement came
- 3:35about twenty four hours or so ago. What can you tell us, Well,
- 3:38it's been a frenetic past twenty four hours. As you can imagine.
- 3:42It's a very tough day for the city of weird and especially the families that
- 3:46are going to be out of a job in about a month. Yesterday's announcement
- 3:51by Cleveland Cliff to idle that plant came as a result of a decision by
- 3:55the ITC, which is the International Trade Commission, which is a federal agency
- 4:00that found that despite overwhelming evidence that had been found by the Department of Commerce
- 4:05that there the steelmakers from foreign several foreign countries are not engaged in illegal trade
- 4:13practices or the dumping of cheap, unsubsidized steel in the US. And as
- 4:19you can imagine, seems to be a lot of people left very confused by
- 4:26that decision, and once again the federal government has left the city of Weirton
- 4:29in its steel industry with a legacy of closed mills and unemployed workers. There
- 4:35was overwhelming evidence of what I just described, it was found by the Department
- 4:40of Commerce, and then the decision made by the ITC caught a lot of
- 4:44people by surprise, given Commerce's stance on the issue. And so, you
- 4:49know, the US steel industry and American manufacturers don't need to have the skills
- 4:57tipped in their favor, but they do need the federal govern meant to actually
- 5:00stand up and do its job and make sure that there's a level playing field
- 5:03for everybody. And it seems in this case the ITC and this administration was
- 5:10much more worried about the Chinese or the Russian steel industry and other countries that
- 5:16we import steel from than the US steel industry. And that's that's pretty damn
- 5:20sad. Soonderweld, is this one done deal? Is there any reversing this?
- 5:27So in order to appeal to the decision of the ITC, you appeal
- 5:30it to the ITC. What I have says legit. So the same people
- 5:35who told you that you were terrible on Monday will turn around in a few
- 5:39months and tell you that your terrible again. So it seems kind of counterintuitive.
- 5:44It takes maybe six to nine months to appeal it to a court,
- 5:48But then the court doesn't overturn the decision of the ITC. They just tell
- 5:53the Trade Commission, hey, you got to look at this again. So
- 5:58that won't help the workers of Weird And you're going to be out of a
- 6:00job at about a month and a half because of how long that process takes.
- 6:02And again it's the same people, so it's not much of an appeal
- 6:06process. Have you had any conversations I know you served that area, Senator,
- 6:11Have you had any conversations with anybody within within the actual company up there
- 6:15or the workers and I'm sure that they've that they've reached out to all their
- 6:18elected officials. You know, Uh what what what have you heard from them?
- 6:23I have talked to people ranging from the head of Cleveland Cliffs spoke with
- 6:28him yesterday, the head of the steel workers union who represents the workers there,
- 6:33uh, as well as several officials in the city of Weirton, in
- 6:38the state government here. Uh. You know, there's a willingness to help,
- 6:41but at this point in time, not really sure what can actually be
- 6:45done, if anything, given what the i TC did. The thing that
- 6:49we can focus on right now is ensuring that workforce West Virginia is prepared to
- 6:55handle the unfortunately large influx of applications for unemployment benefits they're going to be getting
- 7:01in about a month and a half. That's uh. I mean that story.
- 7:05As I said, when once it broke yesterday, man, I was
- 7:08just like wow. I mean, at any time, and again, for
- 7:11those of us who are in the Kanaal Valley may seem like it's it's clear
- 7:15across the country, but anytime you have that many jobs We're talking about nearly
- 7:18a thousand jobs, Senator, it's going to impact a lot of people in
- 7:21the state from taxes and so on and so forth. And uh, and
- 7:25that's something I even thought about, Senator, was the burden that's going to
- 7:29put on workforce West Virginia. That's something I hadn't even thought about, yep.
- 7:31And so we need to be prepared to ensure that those families in the
- 7:36short term have the the you know, opportunity to get to the benefits that
- 7:41they deserve. But also, Dave, I mean this, words are don't
- 7:46mean a whole lot right now, but actions do. And so we need
- 7:47to make sure that we're going all that we can to redouble our efforts to
- 7:53help create a much more you know, conducive environment for economic development projects.
- 7:58The city of Weirton has one that is very significant. It's being built now,
- 8:03but we need to ensure that those opportunities continue for weird and the whole
- 8:07Northern Panhandle from my perspective, to ensure that these people are losing their jobs
- 8:11could have a career in the future where they live. Well, Senator,
- 8:15I know that you've been on top of this from the get go, and
- 8:20hats off to you and the others that are working to try to work through
- 8:22this as best you can. I appreciate you taking time on your schedule to
- 8:26be here today. Thanks a lot. Thank you very much. Have a
- 8:28good weekend as well. Senator Ryan Weld again, over a thousand jobs or
- 8:31actually it's right, just under a thousand jobs I think are going to be
- 8:35lost up there, and again for those of us in the Kanawha Valley,
- 8:37it is a big deal because that's taxes, that's tax dollars and things of
- 8:41that nature that does impact the States. Appreciate to Senator Ryan Weld for being
- 8:46with us on the show today. Phone calls to the show service of big

- 9:26Association with this week's Adopt Me Please pat of the Weekendah, good morning,
- 9:30welcome to the show. Good morning, thank you for being here and thank
- 9:33you for working with us on the timing today. Had to get that story
- 9:37with the Senator Weld out there this morning. As always our do me please
- 9:41putter the week from the Cannala Charles Newmaine Association. Picture posted on my Facebook
- 9:45page Dave Alan Radio and also on Axe the Artist formerly known as Twitter.
- 9:48This morning, we are talking about a lovely creature by the name of Sienna.
- 9:54Hannah, tell us about Sienna. All right, the Sienna is she's
- 10:00a little girl. She is about six months old. I believe she's just
- 10:05around six months old. She is microchipped and vaccinated, and she is very,
- 10:13very playful when she gets to warming up to you and after she kind
- 10:18of gets over her shyness. And nervousness because she is rather shy at first.
- 10:22She does love playful dog. She would be a great family dog.
- 10:26I would say she's still learning how to walk on the leash, but she
- 10:31is a puppy still, so that is expected. She didn't need somebody that
- 10:37can work with her. She were not exactly sure if she's housebroken or not,
- 10:43but she is a puppy, so it is expected that she may have
- 10:46a few accidents. So somebody who's willing to work with her on that.
- 10:52And she is just an all around social butterfly. She is very, very
- 10:56sweet, she's looking for the best, and she is around twenty pounds out.
- 11:01Believe well, she's a certainly a beautiful dog. And if you'll notice
- 11:09when you go over to my Facebook page or the x account and you look
- 11:11at her eye, she does have a little situation going on with her eye.
- 11:16But you were telling me last night that it's called cherry eye, and
- 11:18it's it's it's not a serious condition. Talk about exactly what that is.
- 11:24Right, So Cherry, I one of my dogs, actually had it,
- 11:28and I did have a surgery on it, just so that way when she
- 11:31gets older, it would probably benefit her a little bit, but it's not
- 11:37a super serious thing. Ma, Terry ays, is just a term for
- 11:41like the popping out of the third iselid glend so and its a lot of
- 11:48dogs do have it. It's just something that can just happen to any dog,
- 11:52really, but it's something that you can have surgery on to either remove
- 11:58the third eye or you can have them pucket. It is possible if they
- 12:05pucket that it can just like come back out. But it's again, it's
- 12:09not something that is like bad or serious or anything like that. It can
- 12:13irritate them over time, but I mean, as you said, madam,
- 12:16I'm sure it's not comfortable, but it's not something that you would have to
- 12:20worry about right away. Yeah, and it's not like a contagious condition or
- 12:24anything like that. I mean, so she's able to give it to other
- 12:26dogs or humans or anything like that, whether permitting. You guys, I
- 12:31understand, are going to be out on the road with an adoption event happening
- 12:33tomorrow at the Loop Insane Albans I think from noon till four. Yeah,
- 12:39so we hope that everybody will come out there so that way we can see
- 12:45everybody and hopefully have an adoption. Yeah, Brian Hughes, my meteorologist,
- 12:48Brian Huston Storm Tracker thirteen is going to be on later and he tells me
- 12:52that by late morning tomorrow everything should be cool, so you should be in
- 12:56good shape there. I do want to mention this, and we still have
- 12:58time to talk about it as we get closer. But Tuesday, February the
- 13:01twenty seventh is World Spade Day, and I know that the group Fixed Charleston
- 13:05is a big part of that as well, and as as as well as
- 13:09as you folks at the shelter. Yes, and we hope that everybody comes
- 13:13out. We're going to have a lot of fun stuff as well as the
- 13:18serious stuff, but we will have stuff for the kiddy friends as well as
- 13:22through dogs. I believe that Starbucks and Roxity Cake Company will be there,
- 13:28and we will also be taking pictures. I'll have a photo booth set up
- 13:31for everybody. And where's this going to be? Where's it actually taking place?
- 13:35This is going to be at Fix Charleston. Oh, at it Fix
- 13:39Charleston. Okay, yeah, it'll be at the shelter at PIX Charleston.
- 13:43Right when you pull across the bridge, you'll see that we'll have everything set
- 13:46up out there, so hopefully the pictures will be outside, but if not,
- 13:50I'm sure we have alternatives for inside. But we do have bandanas and
- 13:56stuff for the pictures, and we're ready to see everybody, hoping that everybody
- 14:00comes and makes an appointment for their animals to get fixed and faccinated as need
- 14:05be. I've had a text to the show here Hannah, before we let
- 14:07you go that says, since different vets charge different amounts for procedures, would
- 14:11it be possible to get a summary of an average cost for them at all
- 14:15the post that I think that probably would depend on the individual vet. But
- 14:20I mean, I got cats, and cats are relatively easy as far as
- 14:24you know, You get them fixed and take them back during their lifetime maybe
- 14:26one or two times, you know, for something other than routine. So
- 14:28that would be kind of difficult to do, but certain one, certainly something
- 14:31we could probably look into. Now again, the fix the fixed Charles's event
- 14:37world S pay day is going to be on Tuesday, the twenty seventh.
- 14:39You'll be on next week, so we can get into that a little bit
- 14:41more at that time, Hannah. As always, I appreciate you being here
- 14:45talk to you next week. Thanks a lot, Thanks you having a great
- 14:48one you as well. Hannah Gardner from the Canal Charles Humaine Association again a
- 14:52couple of quick notes things she talked about there. There is an adoption event
- 14:54going on at the Loop and saying Albans tomorrow between noon and four and also
- 14:58World Space Day Tuesday, February the twenty seventh, and the Humane Association kind
- 15:03of working with the group fixed Charleston on that and we'll get into that in
- 15:07detail coming up a little bit later on as we get closer, and Hannah
- 15:11will be joining us again next week. Our DoPT me please put it the
- 15:13week again. Is Sianna six months old? Vaccinated and micro chip not fixed
- 15:18yet but will be soon. Don't know about the housebreaking thing as of yet,
- 15:22but she's still a puppy, so she still she's still got time to
- 15:26learn and to have a few more accidents, but I'm sure they can get
- 15:28that taken care of. Sianna loves kids, loves other playful dogs, can
- 15:33be a little bit shy at first. It's still learning again young learning to
- 15:39walk on the least that'll come. And as far as that eye condition goes,
- 15:43if you go over to my Facebook page or my ex page. Artists
- 15:46will be known as Twitter. You will see the I. It's called cherry
- 15:52Eye. It looks a lot worse than it is. It's not dangerous,
- 15:54doesn't seem to cause her any problems. Some people choose to have surgery,
- 15:56as Handa did with her dog. Some people do not. It's not a
- 16:00contagious situation or anything like that. But lovely, lovely dog would be great
- 16:06for your family. Go over in get Sianna and again I get the picture
- 16:10post of Sienna on my social media pages. A Dave Allan show on five

- 19:32Also meteorologist Brian Hughes. This gentleman not a meteorologists or does he play one
- 19:36on TV? It's County Commission Ben Sulanga, Good morning, sir. I
- 19:40rely on the meteorolis is all the time, though I would never try to
- 19:41predict the weather. You're ready for this big snow event that we're going to
- 19:45have, going to get it? Well, well, it's really weird,
- 19:48and we're going to talk to Brian about this a little bit later on,
- 19:49because you know, some forecasters said three to six inches, but it looks
- 19:53like for our area it's going to be an inch or last and it's all
- 19:56going to be gone by like midday tomorrow. So from there's gonna be time
- 20:00frame I guess from about maybe eight nine o'clock tonight till maybe six or seven
- 20:03in the morning. You probably want to stay off the roads because it's going
- 20:06to be sleep. But after after that it's all good. Well, I
- 20:10saw Brian's post this morning and I thought, there's no way we're getting all
- 20:12that snow. But we'll see. I don't trust him. I don't think
- 20:15well, as soon as I'm not prepared for it, if I don't have
- 20:18salt, if I don't have the you know, everything ready, then we'll
- 20:19get hit with a blizzard. I want to bring this up to you.
- 20:22I'm not and I don't want you to delve too deeply into this. But
- 20:26we have some we have some names now to uh fill that third commission seat
- 20:30for Kanaan County. I mean the person holds it now. Ken Carper is
- 20:32running for reelection on the Democrat signed former Secretary of State Natalie Tenant has it
- 20:36not she's she's running on the Republican side. We have former Senator Chris Walters,
- 20:41he was on the show earlier this week. Dwayne Duncan who's also been
- 20:44on the show. It seems like a lot of interest, Sir, that's
- 20:47good. Everybody wants to hang out with you and Lance. Is that what
- 20:48it is? Well, probably want to want to hang out with Lance,
- 20:51Probably not me, but yeah, it's you know, some good names in
- 20:53there, and uh, you know, I Ken's had that position forever.
- 20:57I think he's you know, we'll see. You know, he's had some
- 21:02health problems lately, and you know hopefully he'll be He'll be back very soon,
- 21:07is what you know. We're all expecting. But we shall see.
- 21:10Mister. We got the word not long ago that demolition said to begin I
- 21:14think around the first of April, and the former Macy's location downtown adjacent to
- 21:18the town Center. That having been said, any movement with the Capital sports
- 21:22compant, so there's lots of movement, lots and lots of movement. So
- 21:26you know, it's just been it's been a long, complex process. And
- 21:30so what we've done lately over the last month or so is we put out
- 21:33bids for a bank to where we can put the ten million dollars at five
- 21:37million from the city, five million from the county. We got some really
- 21:41great bids. We selected a bank. I think we're getting around five point
- 21:45three percent in a money market account, so you think about that we put
- 21:49that ten million in, we're earning over forty thousand dollars a month in interest,
- 21:55which is good because it's going to take a little while to get the
- 21:56architectural drawings and those things back. So at present, we have an agreement
- 22:03in principle for the purchase of the Macy's building. I think the lawyers,
- 22:07and I do not do property law, thankfully, not your bags. It
- 22:11is not my bag, not clothes. If I need to buy property,
- 22:14I hire a lawyer. I don't do it. But they're ironing out all
- 22:17those agreements and hopefully that will be signed very soon. The goal is to
- 22:22start tearing down the Macy's building first week April. I'm going to go over
- 22:26there with sledgehammer, and I know Commissioner that the plans are to have aquatics
- 22:33to be a big part of this new center. Someone texted the show the
- 22:37other day and was asking about the size of the pool or pools, what's
- 22:41being talked about. Of course, we're still trying to get there at this
- 22:45point, so plans can change whatever. But how big are we talking about
- 22:48here? Well, I think if you're going to be competitive, you're going
- 22:51to host meets, then you need at least a fifty meter and so that's
- 22:56what we're looking at now. I think what we're probably going to be looking
- 22:57at is because when we initially priced this out, we were around three hundred
- 23:03to three hundred fifty dollars a square foot, and now it's substantially higher than
- 23:07that. So you've got to make sure that you're not going over budget.
- 23:11So I think we're looking at building out the basketball, pickleball, volleyball part
- 23:17first. That's that's the revenue making sense. That's the thing that's going to
- 23:22bring in the biggest economic impact. And so we met with Sports Facilities Company.
- 23:26They do this nationwide, and we had an all day meeting kind of
- 23:30going back and forth, you know, what are our goals, what are
- 23:33our expectations, And so I think when we're looking at the Macy's site,
- 23:37that's probably where we're going to be putting the basketball volleyball facility. And then
- 23:41I hope construction prices will come down. We all do, yeah, because
- 23:47it's you know, if you're going if it's fifty percent higher, you just
- 23:51it's not affordable. It's not something that I know the mayor city Council would
- 23:55be willing to do. It's not something that I would recommend the County Commission,
- 23:59you know, spend way too much money when construction prices are high.
- 24:03Now they have, they have dropped a little bit over the last four or
- 24:04five months, but that's changed since we announced the project. So we're looking
- 24:08at that. We're gonna we're gonna start with the basketball, volleyball side first,
- 24:12and when we talk about you know, this commission, I want people
- 24:17to understand when we say a we're not talking about like the kind of basketball
- 24:21court that you have in the backyard. You know, we're not talking about
- 24:23a rim in a garage. We're not talking about a small middle school.
- 24:26We're talking about a big, old facility here. If this thing comes to
- 24:29fruition, this is this is going to be state of the art. I
- 24:30mean, if you look back at Shawnee Sports Complex for example, you know,
- 24:36there were things that we did and we did it based upon what's going
- 24:38to drive in what's going to have the biggest economic impact, and it's you
- 24:42know, generated over one hundred and thirty million dollars in five years. This
- 24:47facility will bring in much much more than that. You know, Shawnee is
- 24:51is we do a lot of sports there, but at this facility, we're
- 24:55talking about some of the biggest travel sports in the country. You know,
- 24:59volleyball, basketball, particularly girls basketball. They are you know, they travel
- 25:03from all over and you can host three hundred teams, four hundred teams.
- 25:08You multiply that, particularly in girls sports, because they bring the whole families.
- 25:11You know, guys. The boys typically nobody cares about that. Well,
- 25:15the girls, it's like a whole family event. So in their study
- 25:18after study on that. So you start hosting these these girl sports, it's
- 25:23going to be it's going to sell out. You know, hotels two three
- 25:26hours away the use soccer tournaments that we bring in. You know, we've
- 25:30got two big soccer tournaments coming in this summer. You will not find a
- 25:36hotel room, you know, within two and a half time. And then
- 25:37people say, and I've had people on this show and others have said to
- 25:41me, well, why are we talking about building new hotels. This is
- 25:44why we're talking about building hotels because we're talking again and you're not exaggerating about
- 25:48this. We're talking about once this thing is up and running, once we
- 25:52get there. We're talking about hotels that I mean, the nearest hotel being
- 25:56as you said, been two to two and a half hours away from the
- 26:00events. Sometimes at our youth soccer tournaments, we people stay in flat woods.
- 26:03Yes, think about it. I've told the story many times before about
- 26:07being in Gallipolice, Ohio, and people that came in for a tournament at
- 26:10Shawnee and the nearest hotel at that particular point was in Gallipolice, Ohio.
- 26:14Well, and we're just talking about one facility. Imagine what happens if we've
- 26:17got a tournament at the Capitol Sports Complex and also at Shawnee. Yeah,
- 26:21I mean, you're gonna have to stay in Pittsburgh. I mean it's I
- 26:23mean, suddenly Dave goes into the airbnb business. That's right, we got
- 26:26we've got a spare bedroom. It's an airbnbing out. Yeah, so you
- 26:30know that's one of the issues. But I think that that that will fix
- 26:33itself. You know, where there's a demand, there will be a supply.
- 26:36So we're you know, anxious for that to happen. But we've so
- 26:40we've made a lot of steps. We've made a lot of progress. It's
- 26:41been a lot slower than I wanted, definitely slower than the mayor wanted.
- 26:45I mean, we'd love to be down there playing pick a ball in this
- 26:47facility right now. But we're well on our way. We are going back.
- 26:52You know, Center Mansion was able to get us a congressionally directed spending
- 26:57ear mark for two million dollars, which is nice. We're gonna be asking,
- 27:02you know, for some additional financial assistance. The Senator's been wonderful with
- 27:07the Shawnee Sports Complex, so has the Governor. You know, we we
- 27:10just announced that we're building a new entrance building. When we built the first
- 27:15entrance building, we weren't expecting the volume, and so now when you have
- 27:21a big tournament, you've got lines for like the restrooms, for the concession
- 27:23stands, and so we're we're going to triple the size of the entrance building.
- 27:29And we were able to get three million dollars from Senator Mansion, which
- 27:30we greatly appreciate, and the Governor, who you know has been a big
- 27:34supporter of the Shawnee from the beginning, gave us a million dollars. So
- 27:40it's a four point two million dollar project. We could actually break ground on
- 27:44that project now, but construction would be going on while we had the two
- 27:48big USU soccer tournaments this summer. So we're going to wait and then the
- 27:52day after those tournaments are done, we're we're going to start on the new
- 27:55entrance building. And this is it's going to be state of the art meeting
- 27:57facilities, tripling the size of the restroom capacity. You know, you've got
- 28:03we have turf that literally NFL players play on. I mean, this is
- 28:07the quality of turf that we have. It's the same turf they have in
- 28:10Atlanta. We have a state of the art musclar lighting that they have at
- 28:14some of these you know, two three, four hundred million dollars stadiums.
- 28:18Uh. But when host big torn we have to bring out porta potties because
- 28:21we just didn't have the resturm. This doesn't go with it, it doesn't.
- 28:25So so that's one lesson we certainly learned, and we certainly appreciate the
- 28:29Governor's help and Center Mansions help expanding that facility. But Dave Island Showing five

- 28:47What else you go going on? So yeah, I mean there's a
- 28:48there's a ton going on. We've got you know, Lance is working on
- 28:52a lot of the demolition projects we've got. We're trying to get rid of
- 28:55these dilapidated houses, these abandoned houses. Uh, so we can none only
- 29:00they're you know, haven for crime, but also they're dangerous. We'd like
- 29:03to tear those down so that when we get new new construction in those in
- 29:07those spots. So I think we just did. We just paid back a
- 29:11half a million dollars. You can actually get an interest free loan. Did
- 29:15you know this? To tear these things down? You just got to pay
- 29:18it back. You don't pay it back and then they charge your interest,
- 29:18but it's it's interest free for a year or two. So we're taking advantage
- 29:22of that. Commissioner Carper was did that even before my time on the commission
- 29:29and Lance is doing a great job making sure that that happens. So he's
- 29:33We've got the big project out out near Tornado with the trails that Lance has
- 29:40spearheaded. So yeah, there's a lot going on. I mean it's a
- 29:42very very busy county. Commission. Got a question here for you. I
- 29:47know you're always good, you're all you're always good about taking I'll take the
- 29:49question. Please ask the commissioner when they are going to devote moneys to bringing
- 29:53Big ben Golf Course back to quality standards. Yeah, that's that's a very
- 29:56good question, and we are working on that, I'll tell you. So
- 30:00I can't wait to announce this plan and that we have there. We're going
- 30:06to be putting a lot of money into that course. Uh. And and
- 30:10one of the things that I wanted to do is change up and I can't.
- 30:12There's not a whole lot. I can't say much about this, but
- 30:15there's one that we wanting to do. Something very special. But I agree
- 30:21with them. But if you look at where Big Bend is now compared to
- 30:23where it was two years ago, I think we've had a lot of progress.
- 30:26The greens are looking a lot better. Uh. You know, we
- 30:30had some irrigation problems. We've got there's flooding. We've had issues getting money
- 30:34from FEMA. You know where we had some of the collapse along the riverbank
- 30:41from flooding, and we've got our one of the ponds that irrigates the course
- 30:47is in jeopardy. So we're working on that. But yeah, I agree.
- 30:51I mean, I don't play that much golf, and when I do,
- 30:53I play terrible golf. But I was out there just probably at the
- 30:59end of towards the end of the fall, and the course look great to
- 31:03me, and I rode around with Jeff. Jeff's doing a really good job
- 31:06out there. So let me close with this. Earlier this week, we
- 31:11had another high water issue here in the county, and it does tend to
- 31:15happen then, as we say in the radio business. I was talking with
- 31:18with Jeff Jenkins, I said, I want you to come on and talk
- 31:19about Tesney said, we called it the normal low lying areas. Are we
- 31:23making any headway here, Commissioner? Because it does seem and it's not.
- 31:26This is not unique to Cana County. It happens, you know where I'm
- 31:29from in southern but there's always those areas. It seems like Witcher Creek and
- 31:33some of those it seemed to when you have that way, when you have
- 31:36that much rain, Are we making any kind of progress? I know you
- 31:38can't do anything about mother nature. I get that, but there are some
- 31:41things you can do, and honestly, and one of the things we've got
- 31:45to do is make sure we're keeping keeping our creeks clean. You know,
- 31:48it used to be we'd have tires and you know, but we're trying to
- 31:52clean up those things. We're doing a lot of that, honestly, the
- 31:55county wide clean up that we do where we take in I mean we take
- 32:00in just tons and tons and tons of garbage and trash and stuff that otherwise
- 32:05would probably be in creeks. So we're trying to help to that extent.
- 32:08But I tell you that people are the people in the africanav Valley, they've
- 32:13been through it. I mean, they just cannot catch a break. I
- 32:15swear, it's terrible. And we've got feme up. They're now working because
- 32:20it was a disaster declaration issued trying to get them help from last time's flood,
- 32:24you know, last year, and you know we'll see exactly what we
- 32:29can do around for this time as well. All right, Commission Vince Lango,

- 37:04first of all, give us the It's tomorrow night, all right, Where
- 37:07do people get tickets and who's going to be performing? Okay, Well you
- 37:10can get tickets on event bright and you can also come by the restaurant that's
- 37:15forty eight thirty seven of Corcory Avenue. That's Something Good Soul Food there in
- 37:19South Charleston spring Hill, like right in between Thomas Hospital there and I think

- 37:31some tickets. We have two shows, one show that starts at seven thirty
- 37:36that's the early show, and we have the nine thirty show, which is
- 37:37the late show. What made you decide to want to do comedy, Well,
- 37:40I've always been a fan of comedy, and my wife and I when
- 37:45we first got together over twenty five years ago, we used to watch comic
- 37:49View on b et. Yeah yeah, ever well, and we just we
- 37:52just got into comedy back then, and then from that point on we used
- 37:57to go, you know, we go travel all the time to go see
- 38:00different comedians everywhere. So we just thought maybe we'd try to bring that to
- 38:04Charleston and try to give people a little treat here at Darleson. Well,
- 38:08and I was kind of worried about the weather, but it looks like that
- 38:12by tomorrow night everything's going to be fine. So you got a little snow
- 38:15or overnight tonight, but they say by mid date. And I got Brian
- 38:17Hughes from thirteen Media from Storm Track of thirteen coming up. He's gonna clear
- 38:22the roads for everything's going to be fine. I mean here in the valley,
- 38:23we're looking at maybe an inch or two if even that, and should
- 38:25be all gone by to Mars to no weather concerns here. So who do
- 38:28we have performing? Actually, we got a Beet and the Deaf Jam performer,
- 38:32Kenny Howe. He's going to be our headliner, and he's out of
- 38:37Chicago, Illinois, and he's been on Beet and also Comic View and Deaf
- 38:40Jam. He's traveled around the country and he's a really great comedian. He's
- 38:45very funny. And we also got Rich Green, call him Big Rich.
- 38:49He's out of Cleveland, Ohio, and he's really funny guy. And he
- 38:52runs a spot there in Cleveland, Ohio called Silks and they do a lot
- 38:57of comedy there at that place there in Cleveland. And then I've got a
- 39:00gentleman by the name of Aggie Cook, and he's a corporate comedy entertainer and
- 39:06he usually, you know, does corporate events and stuff like that. But
- 39:08he's really really funny also. So we've got these three comedians. They're coming
- 39:13here to Charleston just bring some laughter and you know, to heal some people
- 39:16out here. You know, laughter is healing, so we want to try
- 39:20to heal some people out here. So we're gonna bring these guys out and
- 39:22hopefully you gonna have a good time. And there's a VIP thing you can
- 39:25do with this, Is that right? Yes, actually there is a VIP
- 39:29and it's a meet and greet the comedian. And also we've got some free
- 39:32appetizers. And you now you're talking mine and Ryan's likely you said free appetizer.
- 39:37Yes, actually you got free appetizers for you. You can meet and
- 39:40greet the comedians, like thirty minutes before the show that you can come on
- 39:44downstairs and enjoy the show. So will you be serving other food there?
- 39:49I mean, is the restaurant, Yes, yes, they can do that.
- 39:53Yes, actually we'll be having some appetizers while the show is going on
- 39:57and things like that, So you guys can come on in have some great
- 40:00wings and also some chicken strips and some other things going on. Also some
- 40:05great desserts that my wife makes. She makes a nice banana cake, and
- 40:09she also has a sweet wine cake, and we're going to have a bunch
- 40:13of other things on the sweet wine cake. Yes, I need to hear
- 40:16about this. Well. The sweet wine cake is actually my mother's recipe and
- 40:22we thought we'd bring it along. It's one of my favorites and I tell
- 40:24you if you like a pound cake that's really deep with sugar and things like
- 40:30that and sweetness, I mean this is the one. I mean, this
- 40:32is the cake for you. And also we've got a peanut buttered chocolate cake
- 40:37which has and if you had me a peanut butter Yeah. Yes, we
- 40:43have a peanut buttered chocolate cake with crushed up Reese's pieces on the top,
- 40:47so you would enjoy that one. And my wife's original banana cake. All
- 40:52right, it sounds great. I know we're here to talk about the comedy
- 40:54show, but I wanted to give you an opportunity to talk about your restaurant.
- 40:57Give me the hours of your restaurant on a daily basil. On the
- 41:00daily base, we're open on Monday through Friday from eleven am to eight pm,
- 41:04and we have daily specials every day. Monday we have smothered chicken,
- 41:08Tuesday's meat loaf. Wednesday at Salisbury Steak. Thursday is smother pork chops over
- 41:15gravy, and Friday we've got fried fish, fried catfish, and fried whiting.
- 41:20And we also have shrimp and grits. Shrimp and grits one of my
- 41:23favorite foods in the world. Man what's your favorite thing on the menu.
- 41:25I know it's all good, but what's your favorite thing? Actually? I
- 41:30like the fried chicken. Really, that's one of our best sellers, is
- 41:34the fried chicken. And how much have you been a business? Actually we've
- 41:37been down there about six years now, okay, alright, twelve I'm looking
- 41:40to afford to try it. A matter of fact, I think I just
- 41:43made a lunch appointment with somebody out in the hall just now. We were
- 41:45talking about this, So let's go to lunch there next week, I said,
- 41:47I think we will. What's the biggest cellar on the menu. Actually,

- 42:06peppers and then like red peppers, green peppers, yellow and orange and they're
- 42:09all sweet peppers and they're mixed in with some other spices and it's really really
- 42:14good. Sounds great. All right, I'm gonna stop talking about food,

- 47:04from Storm Track of thirteen. Mister Hughes, how are you? I'm doing
- 47:07great today. How's your Friday? Well, you know, I just got
- 47:10did an entire segment talking about comedy and soul food and listen. I was
- 47:15I was thinking about that pork butt that he was talking about. I mean,
- 47:19that sounded great. Chunky butt is what he calls it, chunky butt.
- 47:22Christ and I used to have that. Then I blew up an appendix.
- 47:25I don't have the chunky butt anymore. I was gonna ask you real
- 47:28quick, I mean, what the heck is going on with you? Man?
- 47:30You've had foot surgery like twice now, Then you blew out an appendix,
- 47:35I mean, are you okay? I wed three foot surgeries. This
- 47:37is my third. It's the same foot thing spot but we hopefully haven't picked
- 47:42this time. But yeah, I did a surgery. I had the foot
- 47:45surgery two and a half weeks later. I decided to blow the appendix out,
- 47:49so you know, it is what it is. It is what it
- 47:52is. But you're a trooper man, and we watch you every morning,
- 47:55we watch you and your lovely dog there. And when are you gonna be
- 47:59back in studio? I hope we had about a week and a half.
- 48:01I get to see the foot doctor in today and we've got a little bit
- 48:05of work to do. But yeah, I hope in about a week and
- 48:07a half, I'll be back getting there and get to move it. The
- 48:09key. The key is that now, just to be honest, here he
- 48:13is, I just can't. I can walk around on my foot, get
- 48:16small types of bine spaces, but once you know, get out into the
- 48:21general public and I'm working, there's just a lot more walking. And so
- 48:23the doctors said, we really have to treat this this time next level.
- 48:29And so yeah, we're doing a real good job here. All right.
- 48:30So let's talk about the snowstorm of the century. It's not even gonna be
- 48:35the snowstorm of the winter, is that right? Yeah? Now, hey,
- 48:38listen, back in twenty fifteen on this date, we had five to
- 48:43twelve inches of snow in the region. But that's not the case. We're
- 48:46not going to have that this time around. Listen, here's what's gonna happen.
- 48:51The cvening. Once it gets about you know, five six o'clock,
- 48:54the rain's going to move in. Four or five six o'clock rain moves in,
- 48:59and then by you know, between seven and eight, you know,
- 49:01it switches over to snow, and it's going to snow the rest of the
- 49:06evening and bulk of the snow, I mean, we're gonna get a lot
- 49:07of big fat plate this evening once we get the rain passing through and it
- 49:13transitions over to the snow. But the best snow that would accumulate will happen
- 49:16between roughly about nine o'clock and midnight one o'clock in the morning. But you
- 49:22know, the good part about it is it's a Friday evening, Friday night,
- 49:25while you can go out for dinner, go out and have a stake,
- 49:29whatever you want to do. That's fine, but you'll be able to,
- 49:31you know, make it home in time, just fine, and then
- 49:35hunker down for the rest of the evening. It'll snow. They'll be able
- 49:37to attack the roads with the flows properly over night because not a lot of
- 49:40people out on a Friday night going into Saturday morning at a lot of people
- 49:44out in about on Saturday morning anyway, but the main roads will be fine.
- 49:46Saturday morning is the secondary roads you know in your neighborhood, stuff like
- 49:50that, it'll be somewhat snow covered. But if you know the bad thing
- 49:54about Saturdays, it's gonna be said, Goshtron cold. I mean, we're
- 49:58gonna be in the mid thirties when are going to be well into the mid
- 50:00twenties with a wind out of out of the west and northwest and about five
- 50:06to fifteen miles per hour for the day with a couple of floyes dropping on
- 50:08and Sunday really cold the morning. We're talking nineteen twenty degrees on Sunday morning,
- 50:13about forty five of the high. In regards to snow totals, we're
- 50:15looking at one to three inches all across our area here within the sound of
- 50:19this radio station. You get back up to say it, Nicholas, Raleigh,
- 50:22Braxton, upper parts of Clay County three to five inches, and then
- 50:27up to round rich Wood, Snowshoe Elkins, Webster Springs, they're going to
- 50:30get five inches plus. But for our area, I mean, like you
- 50:35said, primarily the Kanaal Valley, things should be although it's going to be
- 50:37cold, there'll be some snow in the neighborhoods and things like that. By
- 50:42midday, you know, early maybe ten, eleven o'clock, maybe twelve,
- 50:45everything should be cool. And we got a lot of activities going on in
- 50:47the area. Tomorrow night. Everything should be fine by tomorrow night, right,
- 50:51Oh, yeah, everything's gonna be good. This really is the perfect
- 50:54timing for a snow because you want one either on a late Saturday, late
- 50:59frie the evening or a Saturday night because you know, just not a lot
- 51:04of people on the roads to the plows. They got the opportunity to knock
- 51:06this stuff out. It's easy. But yeah, on on average, we're
- 51:08gonna see between one and three inches of snow across the Greater canalv out.
- 51:14But by next week, Brian, we got about ten or fifteen seconds.
- 51:15We're running to let you go. But by next week we're into the fifties
- 51:19and it's all and it's all good, right yeah, President's Day fifty Tuesday
- 51:22fifty five, we're at sixty on Wednesday and Thursday. We'll get another shot
- 51:27of colder air next Friday and Saturday. All right, Brian, try to
- 51:30be well, okay, try to take care of yourself. All right,
- 51:34all right, we'll talk in progress there talk again, Sue Man. Thanks
- 51:36a lot. Media ratigs is Brian Housse from Storm Track at thirteen. The
