- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up, everybody?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome back to another episode of Buco Territory, presented to
- 0:13Speaker 2: you by the Foul Territory Network on Noah Hiles. Joining
- 0:16Speaker 2: me as always are my co hosts Mark aka Platinum
- 0:19Speaker 2: Key and Josh Harrison.
- 0:21Speaker 1: It's a mailbag Wednesday.
- 0:22Speaker 2: We have a couple of questions to answer for you
- 0:25Speaker 2: as the Pirates are in the midst of a six
- 0:27Speaker 2: game West Coast road trip in Arizona and San Francisco,
- 0:31Speaker 2: So let's get right into him.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Mark, what's the first question?
- 0:34Speaker 3: All right? The first question tonight comes to us from
- 0:37Speaker 3: Max Wellington, who asks, do you guys think it's close
- 0:40Speaker 3: to the time we move Connor Griffin up in the order.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Super nice to have that speed and potential down in
- 0:45Speaker 3: the lineup, But would he be would he get better
- 0:48Speaker 3: pitches to hit and make more of an impact at
- 0:51Speaker 3: five or six or potentially leading off?
- 0:55Speaker 1: I'll start real quick. I'm not moving O'Neil Cruise out
- 0:59Speaker 1: of the leadoff spot at all.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I would maybe you know what, I'll scratch that I
- 1:04Speaker 2: would explore if O'Neil has an off day, I would
- 1:09Speaker 2: explore with Connor. Experiment with Connor the leadoff spot against
- 1:13Speaker 2: the left hander, just to see how it goes. Like,
- 1:16Speaker 2: if you want to give O'Neill an off day against
- 1:18Speaker 2: the left hander and then bat Connor lead off.
- 1:21Speaker 1: When he's not playing, that's fine.
- 1:24Speaker 2: But O'Neil Cruz has been so productive at that top
- 1:27Speaker 2: spot of the order.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I'm not messing with a lot of the batting order,
- 1:31Speaker 2: to be honest. Yeah, so I do think it is
- 1:35Speaker 2: getting close to that time where we move him up.
- 1:37Speaker 2: But I mean, who are you gonna bump down? I mean,
- 1:41Speaker 2: Ozuna is the obvious answer, but you're not batting Ozuna eighth.
- 1:45Speaker 2: So I guess if you bench Ozuna this makes the
- 1:48Speaker 2: equation a little bit easier. But if Ozuna is still
- 1:51Speaker 2: gonna be your everyday d H and you're gonna allow
- 1:53Speaker 2: him more time to figure this out, then yeah, I
- 1:56Speaker 2: think you keep Connor, maybe you move him up to seven,
- 1:59Speaker 2: But I mean you're not moving Nick and Zalis down.
- 2:02Speaker 2: He's top ten in the league in hitting right now.
- 2:05Speaker 2: You got to keep O'Hearn where he's at. You're not
- 2:07Speaker 2: messing with Reynolds or lower Cruise. So I don't know,
- 2:11Speaker 2: like I like the idea of I mean it's low pressure.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Man him back and eighth like it's it's just starting
- 2:19Speaker 2: to work.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Why mess with it?
- 2:23Speaker 4: You see me smiling because I actually actually experienced this.
- 2:28Speaker 4: And baseball is a game of consistency. It's what they
- 2:31Speaker 4: ask for players. And you know, for the most part,
- 2:35Speaker 4: everybody knows growing up, you know, even going to high school, college,
- 2:38Speaker 4: you know, everybody's like, oh, man, I wish my name.
- 2:40Speaker 4: You know, I want to be penciled in every day,
- 2:42Speaker 4: back and third, playing shortstop to nowhere. Yet obviously as
- 2:45Speaker 4: you get the pro ball things change. You know, everybody's
- 2:47Speaker 4: just as good as you. There are other things that
- 2:49Speaker 4: you know take into account. But uh, I'm a big
- 2:52Speaker 4: believer and if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And
- 2:54Speaker 4: as you mentioned, the top of the lineup has been productive.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Not that Connor can't be productive at the top of
- 2:59Speaker 4: the lineup, but if you do change things up now,
- 3:03Speaker 4: you end up throwing a little bit of guy's routine off.
- 3:06Speaker 4: And only say that from personal experience. I think it
- 3:10Speaker 4: was maybe sixteen, twenty sixteen, or seventeen, I can't remember
- 3:15Speaker 4: which year, but we got to like the last week
- 3:19Speaker 4: or to a spring training and we had just come
- 3:22Speaker 4: off of a playoff year ninety something wins, and the
- 3:25Speaker 4: last two weeks of spring training they tell us we're
- 3:28Speaker 4: gonna change the lineup. Jason's gonna lead off. Couch, We're
- 3:31Speaker 4: gonna hit you second. J Jay, Hey, we're gonna hit
- 3:35Speaker 4: you fifth. You've been on our better hitters. You and
- 3:37Speaker 4: Polanco usually hit one and two, but both of you
- 3:39Speaker 4: have been some of our better hitters with runners in
- 3:41Speaker 4: scoring positions. So we're gonna put you fifth and six
- 3:43Speaker 4: to start the season. And yes, that makes sense, but
- 3:46Speaker 4: at the same time, we were hitting with runners in
- 3:48Speaker 4: scoring position our second or third at bat, not our
- 3:50Speaker 4: first at bat. Also, Couch, who spent his previous with
- 3:54Speaker 4: seven years hitting in that three hole, knowing he's playing
- 3:57Speaker 4: center field, it threw his routine off when he came
- 4:00Speaker 4: up and was like, oh man, I'm hitting second. Like, okay,
- 4:03Speaker 4: it's cool, but I've never hit behind Jason. Jason's never
- 4:06Speaker 4: hit lead off. Jaso is swinging at the first pitch
- 4:08Speaker 4: a lot because and it's nothing against Jaso, It's just
- 4:11Speaker 4: you had a lot of guys in situations that they
- 4:13Speaker 4: weren't comfortable and not that you know, Connor wouldn't be
- 4:16Speaker 4: comfortable at the top. But to go to your point, Noah,
- 4:19Speaker 4: the top of the lineup has done really good and
- 4:23Speaker 4: Connor seems to be settling pretty well down there, especially
- 4:25Speaker 4: you know, as you said, it's not a high pressure
- 4:28Speaker 4: situation for him. And that's ultimately what we talked about
- 4:31Speaker 4: for Connor coming into this team is that you know
- 4:33Speaker 4: he's not He doesn't have to be considered, Oh, we
- 4:36Speaker 4: need you to lead off and hit three thirty and
- 4:38Speaker 4: steal forty bags. But you see him coming on, So
- 4:42Speaker 4: it is a nice talk to have, Oh what do
- 4:43Speaker 4: we need to do to get him up there? But
- 4:45Speaker 4: it's also a nice problem to say, you know what,
- 4:48Speaker 4: six or seven is cool because you know what, our
- 4:50Speaker 4: top five have really been steady mainstays. As I said,
- 4:54Speaker 4: I'm a firm believer just going off. You know, if
- 4:57Speaker 4: it ain't broke up top, don't fix it. And sometimes
- 5:00Speaker 4: when you jumble things around, it can throw a little
- 5:02Speaker 4: people off, and you know, sometimes you might be causing
- 5:05Speaker 4: more of a problem than actually helping.
- 5:07Speaker 3: And I'll just piggyback off that last point you made
- 5:09Speaker 3: their Joshuare I think having counter Griffin in the back
- 5:12Speaker 3: half of this lineup helps his team quite a bit
- 5:14Speaker 3: right now because as the lineup turns over, he's getting
- 5:17Speaker 3: on base, putting himself in his scoring position. Oh, here
- 5:20Speaker 3: comes Onio Cruz, here comes Brandon Lowe, here comes Ryan O'Hearn.
- 5:24Speaker 3: You know it. It puts the Pirates in a point
- 5:26Speaker 3: where he can still make a great impact on the team.
- 5:28Speaker 3: He doesn't have to be in the top half of
- 5:30Speaker 3: the lineup to make an impact. So I like having
- 5:33Speaker 3: him there, especially low pressure, keeping him fresh and you know,
- 5:37Speaker 3: focus on the defense right now and the rest will come.
- 5:41Speaker 3: So anything else, I.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Will say, his time is gonna come where he's hitting
- 5:46Speaker 4: up at the top and he's getting five back today,
- 5:48Speaker 4: you know, like and right now you don't. I mean, yes,
- 5:52Speaker 4: you could use it, but right now there's really no
- 5:53Speaker 4: need for it. He's stay, stay a.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Couple hundred more at bats. Yeah.
- 5:58Speaker 1: My thing is this too.
- 6:00Speaker 2: I mean I'm wishing I'm not wishing this upon anyone,
- 6:03Speaker 2: but the reality is someone is gonna go on the
- 6:06Speaker 2: fifteen day IL at some point in this season, and
- 6:10Speaker 2: you know, someone in that top five, sixth spoted batting order,
- 6:14Speaker 2: and for certain teams, even teams that are in the playoffs,
- 6:18Speaker 2: when you lose a cleanup hitter, a third hitter, a
- 6:21Speaker 2: leadoff hitter.
- 6:22Speaker 1: You're like, crap, like what do you do?
- 6:24Speaker 2: You kind of scramble and try to find you have
- 6:26Speaker 2: your answer here, you have your answer.
- 6:28Speaker 1: He's batting eighth.
- 6:29Speaker 2: And you know, like, I think, yeah, at the at
- 6:33Speaker 2: the most, I'd probably move him up to sixth right now,
- 6:36Speaker 2: and I would keep him there on the back half
- 6:38Speaker 2: of the order because I agree, I like him being
- 6:40Speaker 2: on base when you have O'Neil Cruz. I mean, that's
- 6:43Speaker 2: how they won the game on Sunday, was Griffin gets
- 6:46Speaker 2: a double. He's in scoring position, your best hitters up
- 6:49Speaker 2: at the plate. He drives him in. So I like
- 6:52Speaker 2: him in the bottom third probably like at seventh for now.
- 6:55Speaker 2: But then like say Reynolds goes down, or O'Neill or
- 6:58Speaker 2: Lao or whoever. I'm not saying you put him directly
- 7:02Speaker 2: at third or second, but he's part of that reshuffling.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Maybe you move him to lead off or second, and
- 7:08Speaker 2: then you move someone back a little bit or up
- 7:10Speaker 2: a little bit, and then the reality is, I think
- 7:14Speaker 2: whenever you move him there, he's probably.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Just gonna be there for the rest of their career.
- 7:18Speaker 1: So and that's that's how it's going to play out.
- 7:21Speaker 2: But right now, man, like the fact that you have
- 7:23Speaker 2: a guy I was looking heading into Tuesday's game, seven
- 7:28Speaker 2: of their starting nine regulars are above league average hitters.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Right now, they have a higher than one hundred ops
- 7:35Speaker 2: plus on the season. Last year they had one guy
- 7:38Speaker 2: on the entire team. So yes, so the fact that
- 7:42Speaker 2: they have that, and then you add in guys like
- 7:45Speaker 2: platoon players who are not one hundred but they're pretty
- 7:49Speaker 2: close to it. I mean, to have that length in
- 7:52Speaker 2: your lineup is a huge benefit. And to have his
- 7:56Speaker 2: speed at the bottom, I think it makes a ton
- 7:58Speaker 2: of sense. So we've got another question.
- 8:00Speaker 1: First, we're gonna take a quick break you hear from
- 8:01Speaker 1: our sponsors, Let's talk love life ft family. I know
- 8:06Speaker 1: it's an important part of everyone's life, but if you
- 8:09Speaker 1: need help or if you don't, Gluechoo Gold is changing
- 8:12Speaker 1: the game and it is turbo charging your love life.
- 8:15Speaker 5: That was beautifully delivered. The new arousal boosting formula combines
- 8:19Speaker 5: passion and performance into one tablet that dissolves under your
- 8:22Speaker 5: tongue for super fast on set. No more waiting for
- 8:25Speaker 5: a pill to kick in, no more moments ruined by
- 8:28Speaker 5: performance anxiety, just the results you want when you want them.
- 8:32Speaker 5: Most DD meds only focus on blood flow, but blue
- 8:35Speaker 5: Choo Gold goes further by combining two ingredients for blood
- 8:39Speaker 5: flow with two more for mental arousal and connection. So
- 8:42Speaker 5: you're not just physically ready, you're actually in the mood.
- 8:45Speaker 5: And we've got a special deal for our listeners right now,

- 8:55Speaker 5: Visit blue you dot com for more details and important
- 8:58Speaker 5: safety information, and we thank you blue ch you for
- 9:01Speaker 5: sponsoring the podcast.
- 9:05Speaker 1: All right, Second question, Well we got mark, all right.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Next question comes to us from Donald Hill and Brandt,
- 9:11Speaker 3: who asks, I've wondered for the last starter or two
- 9:14Speaker 3: why hasn't seth Rnandez been promoted to HY eight. I know,
- 9:17Speaker 3: no two prospects are the same, but I was hopeful
- 9:19Speaker 3: when they allowed KG to rock it through. Don't tell
- 9:22Speaker 3: me they're going to take a slow again.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Well, I mean I don't really have much to say. No,
- 9:30Speaker 4: you'll probably expand a little bit more than me. But
- 9:35Speaker 4: who's this question? From? What I want to address?
- 9:39Speaker 1: Donald?
- 9:40Speaker 3: Donald Donald.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a good question. And obviously we know the
- 9:46Speaker 4: type of prospect that Seth Hernandez is and what he
- 9:50Speaker 4: can bring. But it's a little different when you're dealing
- 9:52Speaker 4: with pictures. You know, obviously, yes, the high school picture
- 9:57Speaker 4: at that, but you know, as good as he is doing,
- 10:01Speaker 4: I'm sure that there there's there's a plan for him,
- 10:04Speaker 4: just because I mean, you don't know what's gonna happen,
- 10:07Speaker 4: and you you you have to have depth, but I don't.
- 10:12Speaker 4: I mean, they're gonna take it slow. I wouldn't sit
- 10:14Speaker 4: here and say, oh, you'll be looking six years from now,
- 10:16Speaker 4: and he hasn't pitched in the big leagues, but I
- 10:19Speaker 4: mean you're still a month into this is his first
- 10:21Speaker 4: full season.
- 10:22Speaker 3: He's pitching twenty.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, so.
- 10:27Speaker 3: The workload they're gonna mind.
- 10:29Speaker 4: No, I mean a really good I mean, they know
- 10:32Speaker 4: he could probably be promoted. But at the same time,
- 10:35Speaker 4: it's like, you know, guys like that, you want to
- 10:37Speaker 4: allow them to get some stability and you know, get
- 10:40Speaker 4: your feet we especially being you know, get some starts
- 10:42Speaker 4: underneath your belt. Now as we get here and he's
- 10:45Speaker 4: doing this again in the next couple of weeks, we
- 10:47Speaker 4: might be talking something. But you know, through that first month,
- 10:49Speaker 4: I don't think it's uncommon for them to say, you know,
- 10:52Speaker 4: get your feet wet, and you know what, keep pitching,
- 10:55Speaker 4: young man. You'll be there when you need to. So there,
- 10:58Speaker 4: they're gonna, they're gonna take the process. I don't think
- 11:00Speaker 4: you say him like you did with KG. But obviously
- 11:02Speaker 4: pitchers are going to be a little bit more protected.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Well, first things first, Connor Griffin wasn't in Greensboro this
- 11:08Speaker 2: early either. Connor Griffin played I think, at least I
- 11:12Speaker 2: believe he played fifty games, if I'm not mistaken, I
- 11:15Speaker 2: think it was something like it was fifty or sixty,
- 11:18Speaker 2: because it was the same. It was almost this identical
- 11:20Speaker 2: number in Bradenton and then in Greensboro, Like they clearly
- 11:25Speaker 2: wanted to give him a sample size. So they're not gonna,
- 11:30Speaker 2: like you said, Josh, they're not gonna put a pitcher up.
- 11:33Speaker 2: They're going gin a fast track, a pitcher faster than
- 11:36Speaker 2: Connor Griffin's track, and Connor Griffin's track is one of
- 11:39Speaker 2: the fastest ever.
- 11:40Speaker 1: So h that's something to note right there.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Second, the high school element of this is something that
- 11:47Speaker 2: fans really need to remember. This kid has been living
- 11:50Speaker 2: in his parents' house his whole life until now. He's
- 11:54Speaker 2: from California. Now he's living in Bradenton, Florida. The off
- 11:58Speaker 2: field element of this is probably harder for him right
- 12:01Speaker 2: now than on field, clearly because he's two and oh
- 12:04Speaker 2: with a sub two era. He's dominating on the mound.
- 12:07Speaker 3: For strakeout six walks.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Now, if this was a college arm and he was
- 12:13Speaker 2: in his early twenties, this kid would be in double
- 12:16Speaker 2: A with this production.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I have no doubt about that, maybe even triple A.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Like he probably would have started the year in double
- 12:21Speaker 2: A if he was a top ten pick and he
- 12:25Speaker 2: was doing this type of production, if his metrics were
- 12:27Speaker 2: what they are.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Uh yeah, But.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Like this is this is a teenager we're talking about.
- 12:31Speaker 2: This is a kid who was in geometry class last year.
- 12:34Speaker 2: So like I and I wrote stories about Connor last
- 12:38Speaker 2: year because I remember talking to him. He's like, I
- 12:41Speaker 2: never did my laundry. I didn't know how to cook.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Like in his college teammates in Bradenton had to show him,
- 12:47Speaker 2: like here's what you here's what you would buy at
- 12:50Speaker 2: the grocery store that you probably wouldn't think of like
- 12:53Speaker 2: dryer sheets. Yeah, soap for the bathroom, like hand soap,
- 12:56Speaker 2: like things like that. When you've never lived on your own,
- 12:59Speaker 2: you don't think think.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Of those things.
- 13:01Speaker 2: And that again, that doesn't show up on his baseball
- 13:04Speaker 2: reference page, it doesn't show up in the highlights you
- 13:06Speaker 2: see on social media. But you got to give a kid,
- 13:10Speaker 2: which is what this individual is. He's a man, but
- 13:13Speaker 2: he's nineteen years old.
- 13:14Speaker 1: He's a kid. You got to give this kid a
- 13:17Speaker 1: little bit of time to grow up.
- 13:18Speaker 2: And so I think you give him a couple of
- 13:20Speaker 2: months in Bradenton just to learn how.
- 13:22Speaker 1: To be a professional athlete for a minute.
- 13:25Speaker 2: And then if this persists, I think you'll I think
- 13:28Speaker 2: we'll see Seth Hernandez if this continues, probably in Greensboro
- 13:33Speaker 2: by June. So he's got one more month in Bradenton
- 13:36Speaker 2: and then yeah, maybe we see him in Altuona at
- 13:39Speaker 2: the end of the year and he could be knocking
- 13:42Speaker 2: on the door for the major leagues next year, which
- 13:44Speaker 2: is again almost an identical path to Connor Griffin, which
- 13:48Speaker 2: is which is what everyone wants to see, right, Like,
- 13:51Speaker 2: no one's fast, no one's slow tracking. Anyone in the
- 13:54Speaker 2: minor leagues and today's Major League baseball, like they're they're
- 13:58Speaker 2: incentivized to get these guys up and that's why you're
- 14:00Speaker 2: seeing so many young twenty one twenty year olds in
- 14:05Speaker 2: the major leagues making opening day rosters, playing in April.
- 14:08Speaker 2: It's not like it was when you were playing, Josh,
- 14:10Speaker 2: Like they want these guys up here now.
- 14:14Speaker 4: But it's been more. But as you say, you see
- 14:18Speaker 4: it more in a position side pictures, they will be
- 14:20Speaker 4: a little bit more careful just because. So with that,
- 14:23Speaker 4: and to make your point, June, you got to mention
- 14:25Speaker 4: Bradenson Florida warm. You don't want him to start his
- 14:28Speaker 4: professional career somewhere where weather it's going to be cold,
- 14:31Speaker 4: and you know, stay in Florida where we want. This
- 14:34Speaker 4: is our spring training home. We get eyes on, you
- 14:36Speaker 4: control climbing, you know it's going to be warm. And then,
- 14:39Speaker 4: as you know, June, another place is should warm up.
- 14:41Speaker 4: That was just something when you said that that popped
- 14:43Speaker 4: up my head. Oh yeah, you know warm weather too.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Yeah. I think we see at least five more starts
- 14:48Speaker 3: for him down in Bradenton before we see him go
- 14:51Speaker 3: to Greensboro. And I don't know if we'll see him
- 14:53Speaker 3: even reach ol Tuna by the end of the year.
- 14:56Speaker 3: If we do, I think he's really exceeding things. I
- 14:59Speaker 3: think it might be like a low way batter right now.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Who's see Seth Hernandez coming up on the schedule is like,
- 15:07Speaker 3: I think it's about time we get this guy called
- 15:08Speaker 3: up because it's just unfair what he's doing down there,
- 15:13Speaker 3: so great love to see that. And the comparison encounter
- 15:16Speaker 3: will point out too, there's not necessarily as much of
- 15:19Speaker 3: a need for the pirates right Obviously, like the rotation is,
- 15:24Speaker 3: we could use one more arm in the rotation, you're
- 15:26Speaker 3: always gonna be pictures, but there's no glaring hole like
- 15:30Speaker 3: there was at Shortstop, where you have this kid that's
- 15:33Speaker 3: proven himself and steps up right away and to a
- 15:36Speaker 3: position to need. So I think that's a little bit different.
- 15:40Speaker 3: And if they really want Seth Hernandez to be like
- 15:43Speaker 3: the Paul Skins replacement, maybe giving him all the time
- 15:46Speaker 3: he needs in the minors and not rushing things works
- 15:49Speaker 3: out in their favor in the end.
- 15:51Speaker 1: And there's also just to round this up.
- 15:54Speaker 2: One the Pirates the way they're set up, I mean
- 15:58Speaker 2: a lot of their tech is in Bradenton because that's
- 16:01Speaker 2: their that's their spring training home. When when a guy's
- 16:03Speaker 2: struggling in the minor leagues and I forget what it's called,
- 16:06Speaker 2: that they put them on the development list, right, that's
- 16:09Speaker 2: what that's called, and they send you to Bradenton and uh,
- 16:13Speaker 2: that's before before.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Yeah, if you'll see.
- 16:19Speaker 2: So when you have a guy in Double A who's
- 16:21Speaker 2: not playing well, what they'll do is they'll put you
- 16:23Speaker 2: on the development list, I believe that's what it's called.
- 16:25Speaker 2: And they'll just send you to Bradenton and they'll work
- 16:28Speaker 2: with your baseball ops team to try to figure out
- 16:30Speaker 2: or they'll send like hitting specialists or fielding specialists, whatever's
- 16:33Speaker 2: wrong with you. And it's just kind of like, hey,
- 16:35Speaker 2: like let's let's take a look at it. Like you
- 16:37Speaker 2: can get a little bit more individualized construction. Yeah, and
- 16:41Speaker 2: there there are more Pirates employees in Bradenton than really
- 16:45Speaker 2: anywhere aside from Pittsburgh. And the best like individual work
- 16:51Speaker 2: that they provide to their prospects happens really in two levels.
- 16:55Speaker 2: It's in the low way because it's in Bradenton. Their
- 16:58Speaker 2: spring training facilities there, they their new weight room, all
- 17:01Speaker 2: that stuff is there, a lot of technology stuff to
- 17:04Speaker 2: measure you know, all your biometrical data, and then altuna
- 17:07Speaker 2: because all the big league staffers can just drive an
- 17:10Speaker 2: hour up the road to Curve PA and get a
- 17:14Speaker 2: good look. So that's where you get the most thorough look.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Not to say that they don't have people making trips
- 17:20Speaker 2: to Indianapolis making trips to Greensborough, but those are really
- 17:23Speaker 2: the two spots, and those are two different types of levels, right,
- 17:25Speaker 2: Like there it's a big jump between a ball and
- 17:28Speaker 2: double A ball, so you're gonna get a closer look there,
- 17:31Speaker 2: and it's and if you're in low way, it means
- 17:33Speaker 2: you're just getting started, so you kind of need extra instruction.
- 17:36Speaker 2: So they probably won him down there for a little bit.
- 17:39Speaker 2: It's also final note here, Greensboro is one of the
- 17:42Speaker 2: toughest places to pitch in all of minor league baseball, so.
- 17:47Speaker 1: You want to get him ready.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Yeah, if you look at like every hitters scats, like
- 17:52Speaker 2: when you go there, there will be dudes who like,
- 17:54Speaker 2: don't hit three home runs all season in Double A
- 17:58Speaker 2: like the next year, but they'll have fifteen in Greensborough.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Just it is just it is the definition of a
- 18:03Speaker 1: hitter's part. Yeah. So yeah, time we've seen.
- 18:12Speaker 2: We've seen high rated pitching prospects in this or Bubba
- 18:16Speaker 2: Chandler struggled in Greensboro in the first couple of months
- 18:20Speaker 2: he was there, and it took him a little bit
- 18:21Speaker 2: of time to figure it out. So just because he's
- 18:24Speaker 2: dominating in low A doesn't necessarily mean, you know, you
- 18:27Speaker 2: have to think major leagues. Yet they have a plan
- 18:30Speaker 2: with this guy. They're they're gonna stick to that plan.
- 18:33Speaker 2: I do think that there's a chance that maybe at
- 18:37Speaker 2: the back end of next season he might be major
- 18:40Speaker 2: league ready. He could be someone that's like a second
- 18:42Speaker 2: half of the year call up if he continues to
- 18:45Speaker 2: play at this dominant level. But his track, even if
- 18:48Speaker 2: it's expedited, is gonna be a lot slower than Connor Griffin's,
- 18:51Speaker 2: simply because he's a pitcher. So all right, final question,
- 18:55Speaker 2: But before we get to it, another ad.

- 20:36Speaker 1: All right. Third and final question mark what do we got?
- 20:39Speaker 3: All right? This final question comes to us from bucks Talk,
- 20:42Speaker 3: who asks, when Jerry Jones comes back, what do you
- 20:45Speaker 3: think the move is? Jones the rotation, Bubba optioned Jones
- 20:49Speaker 3: the rotation, Majinsky option ormit Magensky to the pen or
- 20:53Speaker 3: Jones to the pen? And rotation states.
- 20:55Speaker 1: As it's I mean, Bubba's not getting options.
- 20:59Speaker 4: No, that's the first thing I was going to dress too.
- 21:03Speaker 4: I was feel like, we ain't going nowhere, and y'all
- 21:08Speaker 4: can expand a little bit more. I was just gonna
- 21:11Speaker 4: go off of some of the comments that were made.
- 21:13Speaker 4: I think, you know what, you hit on them when
- 21:15Speaker 4: Ben said they were gonna get creative. Obviously Jared's making
- 21:19Speaker 4: his rehabs. I think it would make sense to move
- 21:23Speaker 4: Magensky to the pen, but I don't think it's far fetched.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Obviously hearing Ben's you know, tone with Jared that they
- 21:31Speaker 4: might not start some of this with an opener the
- 21:33Speaker 4: other day. I mean they went opener and ended up
- 21:35Speaker 4: going with six or seven, you know, scoreless or hitless
- 21:39Speaker 4: or whatever. So I think based off of perfect Yeah,
- 21:43Speaker 4: so I would think that it would be revolved around,
- 21:46Speaker 4: you know, Magenski being moved to the pen, Jones benefits starter,
- 21:49Speaker 4: or you know, based off of matchup if they might
- 21:52Speaker 4: want to Montgomery go start, you know, go open or
- 21:55Speaker 4: you know, Magensky open. But just going off of what
- 21:59Speaker 4: Sherrington is said, I think that star, that fifth star
- 22:04Speaker 4: is going to be Jones, but also some creativity based
- 22:07Speaker 4: off of Okay, maybe we can get an ning or
- 22:10Speaker 4: two out of the bullpen before we run him out
- 22:12Speaker 4: there for you know, seventy five pitch. I don't know,
- 22:14Speaker 4: I'm just throwing something out there because obviously he's going
- 22:17Speaker 4: to be on the limit coming back.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Yeah, Jared Jones definitely should be in the starting rotation
- 22:21Speaker 3: at some point. The question is really when and how
- 22:25Speaker 3: does he get back into this rotation because we've seen
- 22:28Speaker 3: the ceiling of Jared Jones. He can be absolutely nasty,
- 22:33Speaker 3: and I fully anticipate him getting right back to where
- 22:36Speaker 3: he was his rookie year. But he's not going to
- 22:39Speaker 3: do that right wing comes back from injury, He's gonna
- 22:42Speaker 3: have to build those innings back up. And the question
- 22:45Speaker 3: is how are the Pirates going to want to do that?
- 22:47Speaker 2: Right?
- 22:47Speaker 3: Is it with that opener? Is it having him come
- 22:50Speaker 3: out of the bullpen for a few long relief appearances
- 22:52Speaker 3: like we've seen what them do with younger pitchers making
- 22:55Speaker 3: their MLB debut in the past, And I think it'll
- 23:00Speaker 3: be a kind of dependent on what makes sense for
- 23:02Speaker 3: Jared if his routine can handle coming out of the
- 23:05Speaker 3: bullpen sometimes starters that really just isn't something that they
- 23:10Speaker 3: can do. So is he just gonna be better as
- 23:14Speaker 3: having that opener still going through his starting rotation routine
- 23:18Speaker 3: and gain him back in that way? So what are
- 23:20Speaker 3: you thinking? Nooah.
- 23:23Speaker 2: I almost would rather see them just stick with four
- 23:27Speaker 2: concrete starters and then having Carmen and Jared be like
- 23:32Speaker 2: this hybrid where one week it could be like a
- 23:35Speaker 2: six man rotation. One week you could piggyback them and
- 23:40Speaker 2: just go off of me, go off of the schedule.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Like if there's a stretch where there's no off days
- 23:47Speaker 2: in like fourteen days, then you can treat that as
- 23:50Speaker 2: like a six man rotation.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Right there, and then there you go.
- 23:53Speaker 2: You can stretch it out where on the other side
- 23:56Speaker 2: of things where it's like if there is an off day,
- 23:58Speaker 2: it's like, okay, well, now depending on who's throwing the
- 24:01Speaker 2: ball better, it's like Carmen, you're in the bullpen this week,
- 24:04Speaker 2: and Jared.
- 24:05Speaker 1: And then I cause I think.
- 24:08Speaker 2: In the end, this team's better with Carmen in the
- 24:12Speaker 2: bullpen and Jared in the rotation. But there's going to
- 24:16Speaker 2: come a point this year, I think where you're going
- 24:19Speaker 2: to have to monitor Braxton's innings, You're going to have
- 24:22Speaker 2: to monitor bubb it or but you're gonna have to
- 24:24Speaker 2: monitor Bubba's innings maybe a little bit. You're certainly going
- 24:27Speaker 2: to have to monitor Jared's. And so I think that
- 24:31Speaker 2: eventually they're gonna work their way into having like seven
- 24:35Speaker 2: true starters with with Barco up two.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and if you look, I think something.
- 24:40Speaker 2: To compare this to is the Cleveland Indians teams during
- 24:45Speaker 2: the Francona era. You had your horses at the top
- 24:48Speaker 2: with uh Klueber, with Bauer, with Carrasco, but then you
- 24:53Speaker 2: had this this mix of guys like I mean young
- 24:57Speaker 2: Clevenger before he was ready to cover all those innings
- 25:01Speaker 2: you had Aaron Savali who they were like kind of
- 25:04Speaker 2: stretching out like they would go with these bullpen games.
- 25:08Speaker 2: But especially like when the Rosters, Yeah, Shane Bieber when
- 25:11Speaker 2: he was young, like working him out there, and yeah,
- 25:15Speaker 2: you let your clydes Dill's develop into Clydesdale's. But for
- 25:19Speaker 2: the most part, like when they had these young guys,
- 25:21Speaker 2: even like a Tristan McKenzie, you could kind of use
- 25:24Speaker 2: them similar to how Ashcraft and Burrows were used last year.
- 25:29Speaker 1: And I think it would probably be a little different
- 25:31Speaker 1: with Jones.
- 25:32Speaker 2: I think he's they would probably prefer to keep him
- 25:35Speaker 2: in the rotation as much as possible, But I don't
- 25:38Speaker 2: know if you necessarily have to pitch him once every
- 25:40Speaker 2: five days, Like it could be a situation where it's
- 25:43Speaker 2: like you're skipping a week and rather than you know,
- 25:46Speaker 2: making a traditional start this week, you're just gonna go
- 25:49Speaker 2: one time through the order and we're gonna call up
- 25:52Speaker 2: Wilberd Hotel just for this week.
- 25:54Speaker 1: He's gonna piggyback with you.
- 25:55Speaker 2: We're gonna option him down and then we're gonna look
- 25:57Speaker 2: at the calendar and we're gonna let you have free
- 25:59Speaker 2: rein next start. It's far from traditional baseball, but that's
- 26:04Speaker 2: the game they play right now, and that's kind of
- 26:07Speaker 2: what they need to do to keep these guys at
- 26:08Speaker 2: one hundred percent and keep their strength their strength.
- 26:13Speaker 3: Beautiful.
- 26:13Speaker 1: That was very.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Convoluted, creative, and they're going to have to save his
- 26:18Speaker 4: best bullets for one they really need them.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Like, in the end, this team, their goal is
- 26:23Speaker 2: to get to the playoffs. They want Paul Skins, Mitch Keller,
- 26:27Speaker 2: Jared Jones, some order of that in Braxton Ashcrak, they
- 26:30Speaker 2: want some order of that to be their four starters.
- 26:34Speaker 2: And then you will have in long relief Bubba Chandler
- 26:37Speaker 2: Karmon Maginski. Now that that bullpen doesn't seem so bad
- 26:41Speaker 2: anymore so, and like who knows what they even add
- 26:44Speaker 2: at the break, So that's how I look at it.
- 26:46Speaker 1: So yeah, no, no, Bubba's not getting optioned.
- 26:48Speaker 2: I don't even think Bubba's getting sent back to the
- 26:50Speaker 2: bullpen because frankly, he's probably he's probably gonna finish third
- 26:55Speaker 2: in innings pitched.
- 26:56Speaker 1: On this team this year.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Or he should, based off of where he stands health wise,
- 27:01Speaker 2: So they need him to cover innings, even if it
- 27:04Speaker 2: is just as a traditional fifth starter, but they're gonna
- 27:06Speaker 2: have to get creative.
- 27:07Speaker 1: So guys, any final thoughts as we wrap this one up.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Yeah, Jerry Jones making a rehab start today as this
