Latest / Foul Territory / Who won the Mets-Rangers Nimmo-Semien trade? Pirates didn’t officially offer Naylor a contract?
Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Wow, Brandon Nimo moving over to the Texas Rangers and
- 0:08Speaker 1: Marcus Simeon moves his way over to the New York Mets.
- 0:11Speaker 1: It's a big deal. It's a one for one deal.
- 0:13Speaker 1: There is money that moves. The Mets send five million
- 0:16Speaker 1: bucks over to Texas. That doesn't offset the total the
- 0:20Speaker 1: Rangers are taking on an extra twenty five million dollars
- 0:23Speaker 1: over the course of all of this. Right, that's important
- 0:25Speaker 1: to keep in mind here is Brandon Neimo has five years,
- 0:27Speaker 1: one hundred and two and a half million bucks left
- 0:30Speaker 1: on his deal. Marcus Simeon has three years seventy two
- 0:34Speaker 1: million dollars. So as far as money, the Rangers do
- 0:37Speaker 1: save money on the short term since they'll be paying
- 0:39Speaker 1: Nimo a little over twenty a year. The Rangers send
- 0:44Speaker 1: over Semion's twenty six a year to the Mets, so
- 0:47Speaker 1: they'll spend a little bit more short term, they'll save
- 0:50Speaker 1: a little bit more long term. And then I want
- 0:53Speaker 1: to get to what happens here on the field. Also,
- 0:57Speaker 1: wait quick, Nemo, no trade clause, says now, I'm good,
- 1:01Speaker 1: I'll go. I know the Mets want to move me,
- 1:03Speaker 1: and he gets way. Richard too, By the way, it's true,
- 1:06Speaker 1: probably makes himself. What do you think krets I mean
- 1:10Speaker 1: for him?
- 1:10Speaker 2: I think it's probably close to three plus million a
- 1:13Speaker 2: year a year. Obviously, it's tough because there's New York
- 1:17Speaker 2: City tax, there's New York tax. There's none of that
- 1:21Speaker 2: in Texas.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Now whereas home is I guess in the off season
- 1:25Speaker 2: depends a little bit too. Anyway, it's about three million
- 1:28Speaker 2: a year.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Yeah, and an assimon pocket he gets another million bucks,
- 1:31Speaker 1: so he got a lot richer in this deal. Simeon
- 1:34Speaker 1: had a limited no trade clause and he didn't have
- 1:37Speaker 1: the New York teams on there. And he's cool going
- 1:39Speaker 1: to a competitor for the stretch run here. He won
- 1:42Speaker 1: a World Series with Texas. We'll see what he can
- 1:44Speaker 1: bring to the Mets. Baseball field wise, Rangers need offense.
- 1:48Speaker 1: They did some other moves too over the last few days,
- 1:50Speaker 1: like getting rid of Adulis Garciage on him, et cetera.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Do you like this for Texas with an offensive boost?
- 1:57Speaker 1: And what about the Mets side where they're really pre
- 2:00Speaker 1: that their run prevention was not good enough and they
- 2:03Speaker 1: want to be this pristine defensive team starting next year?
- 2:06Speaker 2: Do they want a pristine defensive team because they're not
- 2:09Speaker 2: going to go out and spend money on starting pitchers
- 2:13Speaker 2: because part of it is like, if your dudes are
- 2:15Speaker 2: out there and they're just gassed, and they're not like
- 2:18Speaker 2: your bullpen's gassed, you're starting pitching was just subpar. O'kare
- 2:23Speaker 2: what it's like playing defense in Colorado. You sit there,
- 2:26Speaker 2: you play defense in Colorado, and you go it's a
- 2:29Speaker 2: track meet, So your your outfielders.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Are going to be exhausted.
- 2:33Speaker 2: But so back with the Mets wanting to create better defense,
- 2:39Speaker 2: big huge upgrade defensively, I just hope it doesn't mean
- 2:43Speaker 2: that they're going to say, Okay, we're not going to
- 2:45Speaker 2: go get pitching because we upgraded on our defense. Both
- 2:49Speaker 2: these dudes are great guys. Both of these dudes are
- 2:51Speaker 2: hard workers. Both of these dudes are on the field
- 2:54Speaker 2: like they both want to be guys who are out
- 2:57Speaker 2: there all the time and great teammates, clubhouse. All that
- 3:02Speaker 2: stuff is great. I just have a hard time finding
- 3:06Speaker 2: the ability for the Mets to get more value than
- 3:09Speaker 2: what the Rangers are gonna get out of this steal.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I know the Rangers need some thump. Is the Ranger
- 3:16Speaker 2: is this gonna is this gonna squash Nemo's thump. Is
- 3:21Speaker 2: is going to Globe Life Park going to really suppress
- 3:26Speaker 2: his numbers, like it's suppressed a lot of guys numbers recently,
- 3:29Speaker 2: including somebody they just non tendered in a Dolice Garcia
- 3:32Speaker 2: like a Doleys. The first few years when Globe Life
- 3:35Speaker 2: was like kind of a neutral park, he was, he
- 3:39Speaker 2: was El Bomba. And the last few years, when it's
- 3:42Speaker 2: become more of a pitcher's park, he's become just l
- 3:47Speaker 2: not even no Bomba nothing. I saw Bombie Bomby Bomby.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I thought it was El Bomba anyway, but l Bombie.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Either way it is.
- 4:01Speaker 2: It's it's tough for me to see the Mets. The
- 4:04Speaker 2: Mets did get better defensively, so if that's their goal,
- 4:07Speaker 2: one hundred percent goal, I love it. I don't think
- 4:10Speaker 2: they got the most out of this steal from the
- 4:16Speaker 2: fact that the Rangers really really needed some offense, and
- 4:19Speaker 2: I think they got it in Nemo. And I have
- 4:20Speaker 2: a hard time believing that the Mets are just gonna
- 4:22Speaker 2: be like, you know what, we had plenty of offense.
- 4:24Speaker 2: We can get rid of Nemo. They got to add
- 4:27Speaker 2: a piece back they got to add a big piece back.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, they're clearly valuing someone who's going to
- 4:34Speaker 1: play strong defense at second base for the next few years.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I don't think that's disputed.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Right, undisputed? Yeah, I mean, look a look at what
- 4:41Speaker 2: the Blue Jays did. They added a platinum glove defender
- 4:45Speaker 2: in Andre Semenez in a position that, ay.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Do you need a platinum glove defender?
- 4:52Speaker 2: Look what it did. It added to their defense. It
- 4:54Speaker 2: added to and they were they're paying Andre Semenez twenty
- 4:59Speaker 2: million a year year in a few years part of
- 5:01Speaker 2: that contract. So clearly there's a value there. But is
- 5:06Speaker 2: Marcus Simon gonna play elite level? I forget what his defense?
- 5:09Speaker 2: I mean, his defense was almost a two war defense
- 5:11Speaker 2: at second base.
- 5:13Speaker 1: It's up there, it's among the best in baseball.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Is that gonna last? Is that gonna last? For his
- 5:18Speaker 2: age thirty eight season? I should have all the numbers
- 5:22Speaker 2: are all the numbers are flowing through my brain right now.
- 5:24Speaker 2: But I think, yeah, he's.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Thirty five right now, a pretty fresh thirty five. He
- 5:29Speaker 1: turned thirty five in September, So you're gonna get his
- 5:31Speaker 1: thirty six, seven and eight seasons. I mean, he's great shape,
- 5:35Speaker 1: He's always been super durable he plays. I'm not as
- 5:39Speaker 1: concerned about the defense. I'm just like, is this the
- 5:42Speaker 1: beginning of a big decline on offense? And what's your threshold? Right?
- 5:45Speaker 1: If he's below league average now and you're going off
- 5:48Speaker 1: everyone's favorite age curve in Major League baseball, what's your
- 5:52Speaker 1: threshold for having a second basement that plays really good defense?
- 5:56Speaker 1: Can he be a seventy ops plus guy seventy five?
- 6:00Speaker 2: Like, I don't think it'll get I don't think it'll
- 6:02Speaker 2: get that low. Maybe maybe I'm being but I mean
- 6:07Speaker 2: his defense. His offense needs to stay right at a
- 6:11Speaker 2: rate at a hundred one hundred ops plus. He needs
- 6:14Speaker 2: to be average, just an average big league hitter because
- 6:17Speaker 2: at second base there is a ton of value there.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I'm just I'm afraid of his defense getting everybody's defense
- 6:25Speaker 2: gets worse. Some guys hitting gets a little bit like
- 6:28Speaker 2: they become they change from like that guy who's gonna
- 6:31Speaker 2: always be able to hit the ball the ballpark in
- 6:33Speaker 2: a certain situation to.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Stay's contact oriented state.
- 6:37Speaker 2: And I think some of his offensive numbers because he's
- 6:39Speaker 2: out there, because he's playing one sixty two one sixty
- 6:43Speaker 2: two one sixty one, one fifty nine, one sixty two.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Sometimes you're playing through stuff and your offense takes a decline.
- 6:50Speaker 2: He's going to be a positive player. I just have
- 6:53Speaker 2: a hard time believing that you can take Nimo out
- 6:56Speaker 2: of that lineup when today Pete Alonso is not in
- 7:00Speaker 2: lineup and there's a chance he doesn't go back into
- 7:02Speaker 2: that lineup. So now if you would lose both those guys,
- 7:05Speaker 2: where are you going to find that extra? Where are
- 7:08Speaker 2: you going to find those let's see Nimmos Homer seventy
- 7:13Speaker 2: home No. Sixty five home runs? Where are you going
- 7:15Speaker 2: to find those on the market.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Hey, for all the parents out there with teens, it's
- 7:22Speaker 1: more hectic now than ever.

- 8:20Speaker 1: They might go in a completely different direction with first base. Okay,
- 8:25Speaker 1: maybe they're players for Akamoto, very different profile. I don't know,
- 8:30Speaker 1: just throwing it out there too.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Much, too much dice rolling to roll of the dice like.
- 8:35Speaker 1: But what they had didn't work.
- 8:37Speaker 2: So they're because of their offense, because of Nimo, because
- 8:40Speaker 2: of Peter Alonzo.
- 8:41Speaker 1: No I like Nimo. I'm I'm agreeing with you. I'm
- 8:44Speaker 1: just saying the direction is in the post season press conference,
- 8:47Speaker 1: like after the season ends, the press conference is David
- 8:50Speaker 1: Stern saying run prevention over and over again, and he's
- 8:55Speaker 1: referring to them being kind of a bottom third rinked
- 8:59Speaker 1: defensive team. Eighth highest batting average on balls and play
- 9:03Speaker 1: last season, which isn't perfect, but it's there. The stat
- 9:07Speaker 1: it's a tool to help you nineteenth in stat cast
- 9:10Speaker 1: fielding runs value metric, right, certain defensive metrics had them
- 9:14Speaker 1: in the bottom third of the league, and they want
- 9:18Speaker 1: to improve that. I'm with you here. I think you
- 9:20Speaker 1: need both. So you got worse offensively and you got
- 9:25Speaker 1: a little bit better defensively. Neimo was declining on defense
- 9:30Speaker 1: in the outfield too, that's fair.
- 9:31Speaker 2: He is, okay, but they also Taka, they took him
- 9:35Speaker 2: out of center, and so I think, yeah, I defensive
- 9:40Speaker 2: outfielders metrics for the what I would consider the middle
- 9:43Speaker 2: of the road guys. Yeah, positioning plays a huge role
- 9:47Speaker 2: in that. But let's let's just be honest with the Mets.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Let's be honest, and I think Mets fans would agree
- 9:52Speaker 2: with me.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Was it their defense? No?
- 9:56Speaker 2: No, like just because just because somebody comes out the
- 9:59Speaker 2: end the year. It's like the Phillies last year, not
- 10:02Speaker 2: this past season. Last year and they were like, gotta
- 10:04Speaker 2: change something. They can't. They can't run it back. They
- 10:07Speaker 2: ran it back and they had a great year. They
- 10:09Speaker 2: didn't win in the playoffs, they lost the eventual World
- 10:11Speaker 2: Series champions. What are you gonna change? So without an
- 10:15Speaker 2: absolute overhaul, which hey, you know what this might signify,
- 10:18Speaker 2: it's gonna be an overhaul, No, Pete, No, you know
- 10:20Speaker 2: we're changing our entire mo. You're not changing a ton
- 10:26Speaker 2: other than you gotta get starting pitching. They're they're they're
- 10:30Speaker 2: nine starting pitchers behind the Dodgers, And if you want
- 10:32Speaker 2: to win the National League, you have to beat the Dodgers.
- 10:34Speaker 2: They're nine starting pitchers. You gotta get four. You got
- 10:39Speaker 2: you have to do things that make your team better.
- 10:42Speaker 2: And just because you missed the playoffs because the Reds
- 10:45Speaker 2: caught you, you can't just be like, well, if we
- 10:48Speaker 2: would have had just a game shift here or there,
- 10:51Speaker 2: we could have been in the playoffs. And who would
- 10:53Speaker 2: have started any of the games.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Who who would have.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Come out of the bullpen and been like, yeah, we
- 10:58Speaker 2: got this like they were. They're more than one game
- 11:03Speaker 2: out of the playoffs type of team with their starting pitching.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I loved this lineup. I loved it with Pete. I
- 11:09Speaker 2: loved it with Nemo, and I think those guys, I
- 11:12Speaker 2: think those guys would age well. I think they did
- 11:14Speaker 2: really well in the New York market. I think it's
- 11:17Speaker 2: something that is I just think everybody thinks can't happen again.
- 11:22Speaker 2: You're right, it can't happen again. But I think there's
- 11:25Speaker 2: a glaring, low hanging fruit that they can just be
- 11:28Speaker 2: like starting pitcher, starting pitcher, starting pitcher. Now, let's see,
- 11:32Speaker 2: maybe our bullpen wasn't that bad. Maybe re Garrett doesn't
- 11:35Speaker 2: blow out because he's not throwing you know, he's not
- 11:38Speaker 2: throwing in situations where he's probably exhausted while he wasn't
- 11:41Speaker 2: throwing it too much, like we discussed the other day.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I just think I don't think the Mets are that
- 11:47Speaker 2: far and to just totally revamp and rehaul everything, I
- 11:52Speaker 2: will see.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I think you have frustrated ownership that wants to blow
- 11:55Speaker 1: it up a little bit, not blow it up like rebuild,
- 11:57Speaker 1: blow it up like switch it up, because they're like,
- 11:59Speaker 1: what happened this past season was unacceptable. Things are about
- 12:02Speaker 1: to change. Nimo's gone. I think there's a chance to
- 12:05Speaker 1: me there's a message send here that Pete doesn't come back.
- 12:09Speaker 1: I think they're gonna hold their line. I just don't
- 12:10Speaker 1: think David Stearns loves that profile of player and doesn't
- 12:14Speaker 1: care as much about the emotions of this guy works here.
- 12:17Speaker 1: This is a franchise guy should retire with them. I
- 12:19Speaker 1: don't think he cares as much about that. Tatuya Amai
- 12:22Speaker 1: is going to get paid a lot of money to
- 12:24Speaker 1: pitch in Major League Baseball next year. He has posted
- 12:27Speaker 1: he is going to sign with a team, and I
- 12:29Speaker 1: think he's gonna be really good. Anyway. He was on
- 12:31Speaker 1: a Japanese interview show and one of the quotes that
- 12:34Speaker 1: stood out to people is reasons for wanting a team
- 12:37Speaker 1: without Japanese members. He said, if there were Japanese people,
- 12:40Speaker 1: they just tell you anything if you asked, right. I
- 12:42Speaker 1: don't really want that in a way. I want to
- 12:45Speaker 1: experience that survival vibe, you know, and when facing cultural differences,
- 12:49Speaker 1: making how I overcome them on my own. One of
- 12:51Speaker 1: the fun parts keeping in mind this is translated. You know,
- 12:55Speaker 1: sometimes things can get lost in translation during that time period.
- 12:58Speaker 1: But do you think this gives us any inkling that
- 13:01Speaker 1: he is going to try and be his own man
- 13:05Speaker 1: on a team that doesn't have Roki Sasaki, Shoeo Tani
- 13:09Speaker 1: and Yamamoto.
- 13:12Speaker 2: I think money talks, and I think that will be
- 13:14Speaker 2: the ultimate decision. But I think there's gonna be more.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I mean the amount of strikeouts one hundred and four innings,
- 13:19Speaker 2: one hundred and seventy two strikeouts. Now the one hundred
- 13:22Speaker 2: four innings always, I'm fearful of it. And he's gonna
- 13:26Speaker 2: have to go to a team that has the six
- 13:28Speaker 2: is willing to do a six man rotation. That's just
- 13:31Speaker 2: like a given for Japanese players and Japanese starting pitchers.
- 13:35Speaker 2: But I mean, I think you can easily do that,
- 13:37Speaker 2: So listen, he's not going to He's not going to
- 13:41Speaker 2: a team that's not contending. I have a hard time
- 13:43Speaker 2: believing a guy leaves his hometown is willing to do
- 13:46Speaker 2: what he says, like, hey, you know what, I'm going
- 13:48Speaker 2: to be me. I want to learn it on my
- 13:50Speaker 2: own kind of thing and lose. So I think he
- 13:53Speaker 2: wants to. I think it's gonna be a contention, but
- 13:56Speaker 2: maybe not the Dodgers.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Money, money and money.
- 13:58Speaker 4: We'll see seven manor coaches.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Bet MGM futures. These are the ones they get a
- 14:06Speaker 1: little Cray World Series winning state you want to try
- 14:10Speaker 1: and bunch some teams together. California, of course, is going
- 14:14Speaker 1: to get significant love here. I don't know, do you
- 14:17Speaker 1: remember what the current number is for the Dodgers. It's
- 14:20Speaker 1: in that range. Most of this is going to Dodgers.
- 14:22Speaker 1: It's plus three hundred, Okay, So if you want to
- 14:25Speaker 1: include four more teams, you go down to plus two
- 14:28Speaker 1: to fifty for California, plus four seventy five to get
- 14:31Speaker 1: New York teams, Texas teams at plus ten fifty and
- 14:34Speaker 1: eleven to one odds for Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, which we're
- 14:40Speaker 1: about to talk about in a different realm.
- 14:42Speaker 2: But if I'm taking if I'm taking Pennsylvania, yeah, I'm
- 14:45Speaker 2: taking the twelve hundred of the Phillies are currently at.
- 14:49Speaker 2: So I'm not getting I'm not taking less, or maybe
- 14:52Speaker 2: they're at nine hundred.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Anyway, you would take them more.
- 14:56Speaker 1: That wouldn't make sense. If the Phillies are at nine
- 15:00Speaker 1: to one odds and then this one's eleven to one.
- 15:03Speaker 4: I'm saying I'd rather take.
- 15:04Speaker 1: The Phillies by themselves.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Phillies by themselves as all.
- 15:07Speaker 2: I was trying to spit out the one on here
- 15:09Speaker 2: that I'm taking Texas because I'm getting I'm getting better
- 15:13Speaker 2: numbers with the Rangers and the Astros, and we can't
- 15:17Speaker 2: just stop picking against the Astro Like the Astros will retool.
- 15:21Speaker 2: They are going to there's no like, Oh, we're gonna
- 15:24Speaker 2: cut payroll. You know you're gonna have your Don Alvarez.
- 15:27Speaker 2: You're gonna have top five hitter in the game.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Are you buying it?
- 15:31Speaker 3: Yeah? I would do California. I would do the same
- 15:34Speaker 3: price on both on California and oh my god.
- 15:41Speaker 1: You would take California plus two fifty or any other state,
- 15:45Speaker 1: any other state?
- 15:46Speaker 3: Would I think the Dodgers probably gonna win it again.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Okay, you could take the rest of the field to anything.
- 15:52Speaker 3: With Toronto and those teams, yeah.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Every everyone else besides these four states for plus one seven.
- 15:58Speaker 3: I always think Philly has a chance. And that's that's
- 16:00Speaker 3: if that's the problem. Maybe give them too much credit.
- 16:02Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 16:03Speaker 2: I mean they're gonna give you. They're going to give
- 16:05Speaker 2: you a run this offseason.
- 16:06Speaker 4: For sure. Where's four We're going see how he doesn't
- 16:09Speaker 4: go back?
- 16:09Speaker 3: That changes if he's not on the team. No, no chance.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Okay, hey, quick shout out tis this season one of
- 16:17Speaker 1: the bigger sports weeks of the year. On the football side,
- 16:20Speaker 1: Pro Football Same Game Parlay boost token already in your

- 16:44Speaker 1: We're going in the weeds. There's a long article that
- 16:47Speaker 1: I highly recommend you check out in The Athletic. It's
- 16:50Speaker 1: from Ken Rosenthal and Evandrelik working together, and there's two
- 16:54Speaker 1: layers to it. One age, what do you think the
- 16:56Speaker 1: Pirates and Marlins will do? It's kind of a state
- 16:58Speaker 1: of the franchises from a construction standpoint. The other side
- 17:02Speaker 1: of it that they start with is the fact that
- 17:04Speaker 1: there are rumblings that these two teams are actually going
- 17:07Speaker 1: to spend a little bit more than they usually do
- 17:08Speaker 1: their bottom five in payroll. They clearly need to do
- 17:11Speaker 1: that to be able to compete. They cry dirt, dirt,
- 17:15Speaker 1: poor we're the only two owners on the planet that
- 17:18Speaker 1: would even own these teams. Feel bad for us, blah
- 17:21Speaker 1: blah blah. I don't want to turn it all into that,
- 17:23Speaker 1: but the question really here is why is there a
- 17:26Speaker 1: sudden willingness from these teams to spend and what could
- 17:29Speaker 1: be behind it. You have many in the industry, including
- 17:32Speaker 1: agents and some on the record, like I see here.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Seth Levinson was in the story talking about how there's
- 17:38Speaker 1: a possibility of a fight among clubs over revenue sharing.
- 17:42Speaker 1: We never hear too much about this, but this is
- 17:45Speaker 1: the real battle that occurs when collective bargaining happens. You
- 17:48Speaker 1: have the big market teams, the small market teams, the
- 17:51Speaker 1: cheap owners, the owners that like to spend, and sometimes
- 17:53Speaker 1: the cheap owners are the big market like it. It
- 17:55Speaker 1: gets really ugly in there. And then they come out
- 17:58Speaker 1: of the twenty hour meeting and go so, thirty oh,
- 18:01Speaker 1: we agreed on everything. So this is what they're talking
- 18:03Speaker 1: about here, And part of the reasoning could be the
- 18:06Speaker 1: fact that there's always grievances and now with the CBA
- 18:09Speaker 1: coming up and these teams like the Pirates and Marlin's
- 18:11Speaker 1: asking most likely for more revenue sharing, money. The big
- 18:15Speaker 1: market teams are going to be like, wait, you want
- 18:16Speaker 1: more revenue sharing money. I mean, when you look at
- 18:19Speaker 1: the Marlin Side Codfather, their final luxury tax payroll was
- 18:24Speaker 1: in the eighty five million dollar range, well below the
- 18:27Speaker 1: number which is one hundred and fifty percent of revenue
- 18:29Speaker 1: share take that they are like essentially required to spend.
- 18:33Speaker 1: It's just that grievances are filed, nothing ever really happens.
- 18:37Speaker 1: So what's the motivation for them? A CBA is the
- 18:40Speaker 1: motivation because that's when suddenly you're dating someone they say
- 18:43Speaker 1: they're gonna change, they don't. They do that one thing
- 18:45Speaker 1: for you real quick, and they look you back in.
- 18:48Speaker 1: That's what this is, right, babe, I've changed.
- 18:53Speaker 3: I've changed.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Okay, I'm gonna spend a little bit more. Oh one
- 18:57Speaker 1: one off season you're gonna do that when the CBA
- 18:59Speaker 1: is coming up and you're asking the big market teams
- 19:01Speaker 1: to spend. This is the whole problem with the game, man,
- 19:04Speaker 1: Isn't this the problem? This is the nightmare in the game,
- 19:07Speaker 1: which is crats for nightmare. The real problem here is
- 19:10Speaker 1: the fact that you have a team like this that's
- 19:12Speaker 1: getting a lot of money like the I mean the
- 19:15Speaker 1: Pirates are in the same realm here, but the Marlins
- 19:18Speaker 1: looks like they got maybe seventy ish million dollars in
- 19:22Speaker 1: revenue sharing, if not more. According to this story highest
- 19:25Speaker 1: revenue sharing recipients and their final luxury tax peril, which
- 19:28Speaker 1: adds all kinds of stuff up, only gets to eighty
- 19:31Speaker 1: five and they still get money for other things like
- 19:33Speaker 1: TV revenue, national and local. I know they don't do
- 19:36Speaker 1: well in attendance, but it's not like they don't make
- 19:38Speaker 1: any money. There. You do the math, You're like.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Huh confused, Yeah, yeah, no, it's very confusing. They they wouldn't.
- 19:46Speaker 3: I tell people, these guys wouldn't be in these positions
- 19:49Speaker 3: if they weren't making money all of this. I don't
- 19:51Speaker 3: understand why you would do it if you're not making
- 19:54Speaker 3: any money and they're not spending. So where's the math
- 19:58Speaker 3: in all that? I don't know. I don't know. That
- 20:00Speaker 3: drives me crazy. How these guys don't go out and
- 20:02Speaker 3: at least try to get some of the big names
- 20:05Speaker 3: to come to their cities and make the fans all
- 20:08Speaker 3: all of a sudden, we're excited. Now people are gonna more,
- 20:10Speaker 3: people are gonna come to the games. And watch these
- 20:13Speaker 3: teams play, but it's like crying wolf here, a little
- 20:15Speaker 3: bit cratzy. It's it's tough to hear because they both
- 20:19Speaker 3: have the potential being very good teams if they just
- 20:21Speaker 3: put their best foot forward and find ways to give
- 20:23Speaker 3: other guys.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Krats. We picked you to talk about me Undies not
- 20:28Speaker 1: just because they're ridiculously comfortable, but also because they are
- 20:32Speaker 1: very festive. When the holiday season hits, you go on
- 20:36Speaker 1: the website and there are just so many more designs
- 20:38Speaker 1: to check out, and they just scream Eric Kratz getting
- 20:43Speaker 1: a little matching sets with everybody that he knows.
- 20:47Speaker 4: You know what. They're called me Undies, not you Undies.
- 20:50Speaker 2: So you go in and you say, this one's for me,
- 20:52Speaker 2: this set is for me. This is what is good
- 20:56Speaker 2: for me, not you Undies. Me Undies a lot of
- 20:59Speaker 2: different ones choose from.
- 21:00Speaker 1: I'm so confused, but what I do know is that
- 21:03Speaker 1: you can knock out all of your holiday gifting needs
- 21:06Speaker 1: today with me Undies. And to get the exclusive holiday
- 21:08Speaker 1: deals up to fifty percent off undies dot com slash
- 21:12Speaker 1: foul enter promo code foul that's me Undies dot Com
- 21:16Speaker 1: slash foul promo code is foul for up to fifty
- 21:21Speaker 1: percent off matching holiday prints with your person. You can't
- 21:25Speaker 1: beat that.
- 21:26Speaker 2: I think it's awesome that we're talking about both these teams,
- 21:28Speaker 2: because what do the Pirates and Marlins have that every
- 21:30Speaker 2: single team wants starting pitching? They have created it, drafted it, whatever.
- 21:36Speaker 2: You know, nobody created Paul Skins, Like, yeah, you know,
- 21:39Speaker 2: he's he's a he's a gift, Like, but you have him, like,
- 21:44Speaker 2: he's that gift right now. And if they don't strike
- 21:47Speaker 2: while the iron's hot, I can see other owners because
- 21:50Speaker 2: I know for a fact he said it. Hal Steinbrenner
- 21:54Speaker 2: does not want to go over the luxury tax for
- 21:56Speaker 2: one reason. He doesn't want to keep paying these teams
- 21:59Speaker 2: more money. He's like why he wants to win and
- 22:03Speaker 2: everyone and everyone's gonna get on him because oh, they
- 22:05Speaker 2: could spend, they could spend a ton, but at all
- 22:08Speaker 2: percentages over the threshold that they're at, the salary cap
- 22:12Speaker 2: that they're at, continues to go into this revenue sharing. Yes,
- 22:16Speaker 2: percentage of it goes into the players Vanguard four oh
- 22:19Speaker 2: one K whatever it is, but it goes to these
- 22:23Speaker 2: teams that are not spending it. So now like the
- 22:27Speaker 2: Athletics of Sacramento last year went there and they all
- 22:31Speaker 2: of a sudden they had don't remember the number, I
- 22:34Speaker 2: think it was eighty million that they had to spend,
- 22:37Speaker 2: and they went out and got several reno They made
- 22:38Speaker 2: some moves that it was like, Okay, they start spending
- 22:40Speaker 2: some of this money or else, teams, we're going to
- 22:43Speaker 2: come after them. Yeah, we're They're all coming into rooms
- 22:46Speaker 2: every year, having owners meetings all that stuff. Maybe this
- 22:49Speaker 2: is the way the Marlins and pirates are going to
- 22:53Speaker 2: get in line to make it look like, hey, we
- 22:56Speaker 2: can all spend. You know, we all need to be
- 22:59Speaker 2: together in this. But I truly believe there's teams that
- 23:03Speaker 2: really want everyone else to spend because they know, yes,
- 23:06Speaker 2: that you are going. The way I equate it to
- 23:09Speaker 2: people who don't know anything about baseball is I say
- 23:12Speaker 2: you go to a golf outing. If it's a nice,
- 23:14Speaker 2: spend money on the golf outing. You're going to come back.
- 23:17Speaker 2: So it's the same thing, you spend money on your team.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Fans are going to come back, You're going to make more.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Yeah, they want it to be a competitive league. Hey,
- 23:23Speaker 1: a couple little signings from the weekend. Cubs added film
- 23:27Speaker 1: Aton to your contract and a third year club option.
- 23:31Speaker 1: The Cubs have to build back some of their bullpen.
- 23:34Speaker 1: They're going to lose some big boys, so this is
- 23:36Speaker 1: a good start.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Build back, build them back, all right, listen.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Solid reliever.
- 23:41Speaker 3: We talked about how many relievers there are. This is
- 23:43Speaker 3: a solid, solid pickup. Looking for big things from the
- 23:46Speaker 3: Cubs this offseason. This is a great start.
- 23:48Speaker 1: And Phil Aton signed on March thirteenth, last year, one year,
- 23:52Speaker 1: two million bucks major league deal with Saint Louis. Yea,
- 23:55Speaker 1: he was really good. I got to go look at
- 23:57Speaker 1: the numbers from what I remembered, but really good and
- 24:00Speaker 1: a little bit earlier this.
- 24:00Speaker 4: Time, quite a bit earlier.
- 24:03Speaker 2: But he still had a two eight ERA coming off
- 24:06Speaker 2: of the year when he broke his hand. I think,
- 24:09Speaker 2: didn't he break his hand?
- 24:13Speaker 1: I think that was that was early? Like that was ago.
- 24:16Speaker 4: No, that was a few years ago. I don't should
- 24:19Speaker 4: have said it.
- 24:19Speaker 2: But either way, either way, he's always been a guy
- 24:22Speaker 2: that's like, eh, you know what, what are we getting?
- 24:25Speaker 2: He doesn't strike out a ton of guys, so what
- 24:27Speaker 2: did he do this this past year? Boom Skyrocket has strikeout?
- 24:32Speaker 2: He didn't Skyrocket is he's not throwing a hundred. He's
- 24:35Speaker 2: a guy that doesn't throw it. But he's like, oh, okay, well,
- 24:37Speaker 2: I'm supposed to strike guys out, bang a ring, especially
- 24:40Speaker 2: when you don't get it. When you don't get that
- 24:43Speaker 2: you know, multi year deal like other guys are getting
- 24:45Speaker 2: just because your velocity's low. He was more like a
- 24:48Speaker 2: strike just a little over a strikeout parading guy. Last year,
- 24:52Speaker 2: I think he went a I'll just read it, eighty
- 24:54Speaker 2: one punches in sixty one innings.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Nice. I mean, it's you.
- 25:00Speaker 2: You had to go all the way back to twenty
- 25:01Speaker 2: one for the last time he had eighty one punch.
- 25:02Speaker 2: He's in one season, so good for him. Good pickup, Yeah,
- 25:07Speaker 2: good pickup.
- 25:08Speaker 1: And then also real quick, James McCann agreed on a
- 25:12Speaker 1: one year contract with the Diamondbacks. Ken reported it a
- 25:14Speaker 1: couple of days ago. We were already done with our
- 25:16Speaker 1: show by the time that happened. So nice, catch your depth.
- 25:21Speaker 2: I mean he watched down the stretch run for the Diamondbacks.
- 25:24Speaker 2: They were in it. James McCann was playing yeah all
- 25:28Speaker 2: the time. And moreno who had injuries throughout the year,
- 25:31Speaker 2: and then the dreaded game calling was questionable from after
- 25:37Speaker 2: the Blue Jays make the World Series, the Dalton var
- 25:39Speaker 2: show for Gabrielle moreno trade, maybe the Blue Jays. Now
- 25:43Speaker 2: it's swinging a little bit at the first it was
- 25:46Speaker 2: Gabrielle moreno possible. You know NLCS MVP takes the Diamondbacks
- 25:52Speaker 2: and like, why did we get vol Varshow? Now it's
- 25:54Speaker 2: kind of swaying back.
- 25:55Speaker 5: We'll see, all right, baby, let's slap cratsats.
- 26:09Speaker 1: What do you have for us?
- 26:10Speaker 2: I mean, I knew Garrett Whitlock was going to play
- 26:12Speaker 2: for TVs. We're announcing stuff here, But anytime I come
- 26:15Speaker 2: to Todds, I mean it's like, this is like coming
- 26:17Speaker 2: to America.
- 26:18Speaker 1: You come to Tom's Road, New Jersey, USA Baseball. There's
- 26:22Speaker 1: the Neon over there.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it is right beautiful, it's got the al it's
- 26:25Speaker 2: got the w b C logo on the back.
- 26:29Speaker 3: It's a good one.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Fresh.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Yeah, no doubt you are the ogs.
- 26:34Speaker 1: We're going to actually get into this topic a little
- 26:37Speaker 1: bit more, but I wanted to finish our conversation from
- 26:40Speaker 1: earlier about the pirates in the Marlins. There's a lot
- 26:42Speaker 1: to unpack with that article, right, but let's skip ahead
- 26:46Speaker 1: now to what they actually might do best part by far.
- 26:50Speaker 1: You want to make aircraft smile ready. This was written
- 26:53Speaker 1: in the story from Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drel. The
- 26:57Speaker 1: Pirates never actually made an offer to Josh Naylor. According
- 27:02Speaker 1: to people brief on the discussions, he signed with the
- 27:05Speaker 1: Mariners two weeks after the World Series on that five
- 27:08Speaker 1: year contract. The deal happened so quickly, the Pirates did
- 27:12Speaker 1: not seriously get involved, So everything that you saw publicly
- 27:15Speaker 1: about them involved and having a quote lower offer actually
- 27:19Speaker 1: meant that they were just thinking about that offer and
- 27:22Speaker 1: didn't actually officially make it. There's your news. That's one
- 27:25Speaker 1: of the big pieces from that article. So they will play,
- 27:29Speaker 1: they will sign some guys, but the article kind of
- 27:32Speaker 1: says how they're going to play more in the kiddie pool.
- 27:35Speaker 1: They're not suddenly signing one hundred million dollar player from
- 27:38Speaker 1: free agency when they've never touched that one. More to
- 27:40Speaker 1: make you excited, It sounds like in the article they
- 27:44Speaker 1: are getting close to requesting Paul Skeens to make phone
- 27:48Speaker 1: calls for recruiting pitches to free agents, which is cool,
- 27:52Speaker 1: but okay, let's do the phone call on Paul Skeins.
- 27:55Speaker 1: I'm on the line with Josh Naylor right now. Hey,
- 27:57Speaker 1: we'd love to have you, like I want to win
- 28:00Speaker 1: blah blah blah. Naylor's gonna be like, Okay, what up, Yo,
- 28:03Speaker 1: It's Paul Skins. I'm one of the best pitchers in baseball.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I'm a g everyone loves me. I'm a number one.
- 28:08Speaker 1: I want to pitch in the playoffs. We want you, Josh.
- 28:11Speaker 3: Thanks man, It's great to hear your voice. Dude. I mean,
- 28:13Speaker 3: I wouldn't want to face you ever again. How much
- 28:16Speaker 3: are you gonna give me?
- 28:17Speaker 4: Ken?
- 28:17Speaker 1: So here's here's the deal. Here's the deal time. I mean, Josh,
- 28:21Speaker 1: mister Naylor, I know you just got offered. What was
- 28:24Speaker 1: the final number for uh Snattle ninety two million dollars?
- 28:28Speaker 1: We've got like probably eighty ish. It's not official. I
- 28:31Speaker 1: have to make sure that you'd actually be interested in that.
- 28:33Speaker 1: We're gonna kind of float that, but like eighty ish
- 28:35Speaker 1: for us instead of Seattle. Seattle only made it to
- 28:37Speaker 1: ALCS Game seven? Like, do you really want that?
- 28:42Speaker 3: I have a good Thanksgiving. We'll talk So.
- 28:45Speaker 5: Todd, Hello, Todd, did your internet go out?
- 28:53Speaker 1: That's a tough ask for ball Wall.
- 28:56Speaker 3: I've had to do some stuff for records. You know, yeah,
- 28:59Speaker 3: everyone calling around, But.
- 29:02Speaker 1: It's a little different game, a little different game when
- 29:04Speaker 1: you're falling fifteen plus mill short on a deal that
- 29:08Speaker 1: never even was really offered you.
- 29:10Speaker 4: So at the end of the show I wanted to
- 29:12Speaker 4: I'm it.
- 29:14Speaker 1: We can bring some of it up tomorrow. We can
- 29:15Speaker 1: spend more time at it tomorrow. Kevin Flarer will be
- 29:17Speaker 1: on with us tomorrow. A Happy Turkey Day to Todd father.
- 29:20Speaker 1: We apparently already had one us you're gonna.
- 29:24Speaker 3: Have and Thanksgiving. We don't mess around here.
- 29:28Speaker 1: I expect nothing less from you. I'll see you guys
- 29:30Speaker 1: on Hot Sheet in about thirty minutes. Dodgers Territory Live
- 29:34Speaker 1: right now.
- 29:35Speaker 4: I can't believe Todd likes stuffing more than anything else.
- 29:39Speaker 3: I'm just you're right back to the cast.
