- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 13th of
- 0:16August and you have tapped on play and you and I, we are going
- 0:21to open up a new book of the Word today.
- 0:25We are going to open up the book of Acts, this incredible
- 0:28narrative which covers this amazing story which begins with
- 0:33this group of scared disciples farewelling their Saviour, not
- 0:38understanding what to do next, going into hiding.
- 0:40Following that story all the way through the birth of the church,
- 0:44led by these incredible apostles, grown by Jesus and his
- 0:48Spirit, all the way to the heart of the world in Rome.
- 0:52And from there it can go out to all places.
- 0:55Wow, what a story wrapped up in this incredible book.
- 0:59This book written by our mate Luke, this physician who writes
- 1:03this as the second half of his writing.
- 1:06The first half being the Gospel of Luke, which then follows on
- 1:09very nicely with this story of the growth of the church.
- 1:12And it begins by him writing to his friends to explain to his
- 1:16friend all the things that have happened so that he can know and
- 1:20understand that actually there's faith in Jesus.
- 1:24He's not just something for that handpicked group of Jews, but
- 1:27it's for everyone, including you, friends and me.
- 1:30Exactly. So literally, this is a book
- 1:33written for us so that we can know that this movement of Jesus
- 1:38taking over the world is where we ought to be as disciples and
- 1:43followers of Him. So let us begin this journey
- 1:46together as we open up and read together.
- 1:48Acts chapter 1. In my first book, I told you
- 2:01Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teach
- 2:05until the day he was taken up into heaven after giving his
- 2:08chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy
- 2:11Spirit. During the 40 days after he
- 2:14suffered and died, he appeared to the apostles from time to
- 2:17time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually
- 2:21alive, and he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.
- 2:25Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, do not
- 2:29leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised.
- 2:33As I told you before, John baptised with water, but in just
- 2:37a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.
- 2:43So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him,
- 2:46Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our
- 2:50Kingdom? He replied.
- 2:52The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and
- 2:55times, and they are not for you to know.
- 2:59But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,
- 3:03and you will be my witnesses, telling people about me
- 3:07everywhere in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria,
- 3:12and to the ends of the earth. After this He was taken up into
- 3:17a cloud while they were watching, and they could no
- 3:20longer see him. As they strained to see him
- 3:23rising into heaven, 2 white robe men suddenly stood among them,
- 3:28men of Galilee. They said, Why are you standing
- 3:32here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you
- 3:36into heaven, but someday He will return from heaven in the same
- 3:41way you saw him go. Then the apostles returned to
- 3:45Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a
- 3:48mile. When they arrived, they went to
- 3:51the upstairs room of the house they were staying.
- 3:54Here are the names of those who were present, Peter, John,
- 3:58James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son
- 4:05of Alpheus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.
- 4:11They all met together and were constantly united in prayer
- 4:14along with Mary, the mother of Jesus, several other women, and
- 4:18the brothers of Jesus. During this time, when about 120
- 4:23believers were together in one place, Peter stood up and
- 4:26addressed them. Brothers, he said the Scriptures
- 4:30had to be fulfilled. Concerning Judas who guided
- 4:34those who arrested Jesus, this was predicted long ago by the
- 4:38Holy Spirit speaking through King David.
- 4:42Judas was one of us and shared in the ministry with us.
- 4:46Judas had bought a field with the money he received for his
- 4:49treachery, falling head first. There his body split open,
- 4:53spilling out all his intestines. The news of his death spread to
- 4:57all the people of Jerusalem and they gave the place the Aramaic
- 5:01name Akeldamar, which means field of blood.
- 5:07Peter continued. This was written in the book of
- 5:10Psalms where it says let his home become desolate with no one
- 5:15living in it. It also says let someone else
- 5:19take his position. So now we must choose a
- 5:22replacement for Judas from among the men who were with us the
- 5:26entire time we were travelling with the Lord Jesus, from the
- 5:29time he was baptised by John until the day he was taken from
- 5:33us. Whoever is chosen will join us
- 5:36as a witness of Jesus resurrection.
- 5:39So they nominated 2 men Joseph called Barsabbas, also known as
- 5:44Justice and Matthias. Then they all prayed.
- 5:49O Lord, you know every heart. Show us which of these men you
- 5:54have chosen as an apostle to replace Judas in this ministry,
- 5:59for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs.
- 6:02Then they cast lots and Matthias was selected to become an
- 6:07apostle with the other 11. Oh Jesus, this is your story.
- 6:22This is your story. Not the story of a group of men
- 6:25and women who went about sharing your word, but the story of you
- 6:29and your Spirit inspiring people to come to faith in you and
- 6:34believe in you as their own Lord and Saviour Jesus, you were
- 6:40active then, as you continue to be active now, moving us in our
- 6:45lives and in the lives of our churches and our communities.
- 6:49Our Lord, I pray that we always remember that you are at the
- 6:52heart of all we do and that you empower us and that you equip us
- 6:59and that you protect us. You lead us and you go before
- 7:02us. Jesus, all glory to you, all
- 7:08praise to you and all honour to you, our wonderful Saviour.
- 7:13King, we do worship you and once again we commit ourselves and
- 7:18our journeys that they would be in service of you.
- 7:22Just as Matthias was voted as a witness to your resurrection,
- 7:26that we too might be witnesses to your resurrection in our
- 7:29lives, with the light of you and your life shining out of us, so
- 7:35the people look at us with wonder, wanting to know what it
- 7:39is about us and that we can point to you, our wonderful,
- 7:43wonderful Saviour. We pray all of this in your
- 7:46name, Jesus, Amen.
