Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome back to my channel.
- 0:01My name is Lorenzo defect and this is bansal Orencia.
- 0:05So for today's episode, I want to talk about changing names
- 0:10after marriage, now, talking about last names.
- 0:13So there was a social media post, somebody made a post on
- 0:20Facebook talking about his friend who got married if he's
- 0:24been married for two years and one of the issues that Opted,
- 0:30their separation was the fact that the wife refused to change
- 0:35her last name. So, according to him, he thought
- 0:39that was not supposed to be, you know, a problem because in
- 0:42Africa, traditionally the woman is there was supposed to be an
- 0:48IT discussion like she has to change his mandated to change
- 0:54her name as soon as she marries the man.
- 0:58She is supposed to Take the mind the month last name.
- 1:03So what happened in this situation was that the woman was
- 1:07already established in her, you know, maiden name, she had
- 1:12businesses share, social media pages with her name and she was
- 1:17like, thinking if I had to change my name attitude, like
- 1:20change everything else. Sometimes the search engine will
- 1:24not even recognize that I am still the same person.
- 1:27People will be searching for me with my You know, name not
- 1:31knowing that you have gotten married and I've changed my name
- 1:34just because of marriage. So the lady refused to change
- 1:38our name. After marriage and for two years
- 1:41she and her husband were having this you know back and forth
- 1:44conversation. Change your name.
- 1:46No I would not cheat me by name because of my branding because
- 1:49of this because of that and the money is like you have to take
- 1:53my name. So after two years the whole
- 1:56thing came to a halt. They separate Decided, you know
- 2:00what? This is no longer working.
- 2:02If you're not committed 100% into this marriage, by taking my
- 2:07last name, then I don't think you are fully into the whole
- 2:14marriage. So that was how I do.
- 2:16My was like, listen, I have my businesses, I have things that
- 2:19I'm doing. I cannot just put everything on
- 2:23hold or just change everything and lose my potential customers
- 2:29because Would already know me. My still know me but because
- 2:33maybe somebody has recommended me.
- 2:35And that person is searching with my name and because I've
- 2:39changed my name, they were not even, I may lose potential
- 2:43customers and this whole search engine issue is going to be a
- 2:47problem for my business. The man was not understanding
- 2:50that, and that was how they separated.
- 2:52So, this person sharing that story on Facebook was like, can
- 2:56we come to an agreement? Like, is this really a deal
- 2:59breaker? Now this story happened a couple
- 3:02of weeks ago so I read it and I'm like these people should
- 3:06have sorted. This this is not really a
- 3:08problem. As far as far as I'm concerned
- 3:10like they should have had that understanding, you know, before
- 3:16getting married so I was just sitting there minding my
- 3:19business when a friend called me and said they want me to weigh
- 3:23in on an issue going on, I was like, okay what's you know, is
- 3:27the problem and according to her, a friend of hers who is
- 3:32engaged planning a wedding, she is also a social media
- 3:36influenza, she had different businesses that she's doing with
- 3:40her name her Need and they sat down with the husband.
- 3:46She was telling the husband that she's not going to take his last
- 3:51name or officially like if they're going for events.
- 3:54That let me say the name is mr. And mrs.
- 4:00Cafe or something like that. So she is saying that she's
- 4:04happy to be called mr. And mrs.
- 4:05Rucastle bought for her businesses and our social media.
- 4:09She is not going to officially change.
- 4:12Change her name. So this world when you were
- 4:15doing, they are planning marriage, you know?
- 4:18These are things that I am happy.
- 4:20That they won't have that discussion even before marriage
- 4:23because I was thinking on the other story like this is
- 4:26something that they should have talked about before marriage.
- 4:29But these are people discussing this before marriage and it is
- 4:34even there is an issue like the both of them could not agree.
- 4:38So the lady was like, seeking advice on how to so, you know,
- 4:42manage the situation because the man is saying that for the
- 4:47wedding to go ahead, she must change her name, and she was
- 4:52like saying that, let's say, I am bringing in the baking
- 4:55because of what I do, because of my brand name, because of my
- 5:00brand influence because of this because of that, I kind of just
- 5:03come into this relationship and change the whole my whole
- 5:07identity because of marriage and And the man is saying like Okay,
- 5:13that means you're not committed to this, you don't want people
- 5:16to know that you're married, you don't want people to know that,
- 5:20you know, I am your husband. You don't want to acknowledge
- 5:23me, don't want to acknowledge my family name, so they were saying
- 5:26they were asking me. You know, what do I think I
- 5:30couldn't? I was first of all I was happy
- 5:32that they were having a conversation because it is
- 5:36better to have that before marriage and resolve that by
- 5:40moving forward. Or by just going your separate
- 5:44ways before getting married, and then potentially divorce in two
- 5:48years down the line. So, I told my friend.
- 5:50Can you just call her? You know, let's talk about this
- 5:53is better for us to the three of you instead of me telling you to
- 5:56go on, tell her. So we had a three-way call.
- 5:59And I was like, why exactly is he?
- 6:03Because he knew who you were, he searched for you.
- 6:07He knew that. Okay, this is your name.
- 6:09This is your brand. This is what You doing.
- 6:12So why is he asking you to change your name?
- 6:18And she said, well in his family, I mean in Africa, it's a
- 6:23traditional thing for the women. Once you're married to take the
- 6:28last name of your husband, that is not even no questions asked,
- 6:33regardless of your whatever you have to do that.
- 6:36Like that is a sign of respect a sign of acceptance.
- 6:42Just you don't even have to argue about that.
- 6:45So the money saying that let's say, this is the tradition, this
- 6:49is what my family, my uncle's, my older ones that got married.
- 6:55They are wife took on the last name, so you must do the same
- 6:59thing. She is trying to explain to him
- 7:00that those are the ones that got married.
- 7:03They don't have a brand name. They don't have like, an
- 7:06established in that they are doing, that people know them
- 7:09for. So I think Think she said the
- 7:12conversation went left from there.
- 7:14He was, she he was saying that she was disrespecting, his
- 7:18family. She was thinking that she is,
- 7:20you know, all of the and she is not.
- 7:23So very having serious issues. So she was contemplating on,
- 7:28just a green to take the last name and then maybe after
- 7:33marriage. You would refuse to do that.
- 7:36So I said, listen, I had two screenshots that Story that I
- 7:43read a couple of weeks ago and I sent it to hiset missing.
- 7:46These are people, probably they thought that they could resolve
- 7:53this after marriage, but this is what happened, two years down
- 7:56the line. So I was like if it's The
- 7:57Branding, that's the problem. Why don't you get a name?
- 8:01That is not even your name or your so name, change the brand
- 8:04name change it to, you know, make up names and initials or
- 8:10just do something or Even hyphenates his name.
- 8:14There's a way you can put that down, not even affect your
- 8:18brand. It was a tough conversation and
- 8:24I was like, okay let me discuss this with a lot of other male
- 8:29friend because these are just three women talking, we are more
- 8:35interested in like saving the brand.
- 8:39I mean, when the modern world this is 2022.
- 8:42Um, no should be the most important thing.
- 8:46Not just getting married and taking somebody's name, so we're
- 8:50looking at it in that perspective.
- 8:52So I told her just hold on a minute.
- 8:54Let me talk to, I don't want to put them the guy on the corner
- 8:57was like we can just hold on, let me talk to somebody and get
- 9:00like a male perspective on this whole thing.
- 9:03I called a friend of mine. I was like, would you if your
- 9:09wife tells you that She will not change her last name after
- 9:15marriage. How would you feel?
- 9:17He pause for a second and he said, why would she know want to
- 9:23take my name because it's like an automatic thing that you have
- 9:28to do and I was like, okay why do you think why won't you take
- 9:35her only because, you know, this is a modern world.
- 9:38I understand that you guys are married in us but Why do you
- 9:42think that woman must take the name?
- 9:46And he said, well, tradition demands that I said to keep
- 9:50tradition what if she is not extra?
- 9:56Are you a traditional person? That was the first question.
- 9:58I asked, as I like you, are you a traditional person?
- 10:01He said, well, he is not that traditional but in the sense of
- 10:08marriage that he would want a traditional way.
- 10:12I said a traditional wife, okay. Now, a traditional wife in the
- 10:16real sense of the African traditional wife is that she
- 10:19will be a stay-at-home wife popping our kids and take care
- 10:23of the children. Taking care of the home.
- 10:26While new friend for the family. Are you that traditional?
- 10:30He said no. No that I'm in the world today
- 10:34women work. So it's kind of a 50/50 kind of
- 10:38situation whereby she would work.
- 10:41He would work and they come together to take care of the
- 10:43family. And I was like, if you can, if
- 10:46you're not all that traditional, would you allow your wife?
- 10:50I mean, if you're going out, you I'm sorry.
- 10:52Mr. And mrs. Smith both in terms of our
- 10:55business. If somebody has registered their
- 10:58identity as their business name. Would you want her to change all
- 11:04those things? Just because she is getting
- 11:07married to you and he said well that he would not want.
- 11:12That's both. They have to like sit down there
- 11:15has to be a good reason why she would not want to take his last
- 11:20name. And if it's kind of a Justified
- 11:23reason, let's say she has different businesses in our
- 11:27name, let's say like apple that everybody knows she would not,
- 11:34he would not want her to wake up one day and call apples oranges,
- 11:38people would be confused. So if it's a brand that That is
- 11:42already established that he is happy for her to continue with
- 11:45that Brandon and just be the husband.
- 11:50So I had to go back to them and I said, well, you have to sit
- 11:53down with your husband and talk about.
- 11:57First of all, why do you think you cannot Rebrand yourself
- 12:04before getting married? Why do you think you can change
- 12:08the name of the business? Like, you can re Brandon?
- 12:12Do you think mischel's as your business just to so that
- 12:17tomorrow if you are now divorced in dispersive you don't have to
- 12:21don't change your Navy again, just because you're getting
- 12:24married to somebody else. So she was like okay that she's
- 12:28going to tell him about that one and you know, that was the end
- 12:33of the conversation. So after dropping the phone, I
- 12:37sat down and I asked myself, like, would I want to take My
- 12:43husband's last name ones get married tomorrow.
- 12:46Would I've like really want to change my name?
- 12:51Change like officially in all my documents change.
- 12:56My name to my husband's name and I don't know, I don't know.
- 13:06Depending on the so named because if I am Lawrence yahudi
- 13:11fair and he He is whatever Rock. I'm gonna want to take Rock
- 13:19currency Iraq as my soul name because, you know, it doesn't
- 13:23arrive. Sometimes it's just for selfish
- 13:27reasons, like, you know, you want something that is that
- 13:31rhymes with your personality because some people, okay, let
- 13:35me put it this way. Some people even change their
- 13:38names before getting married. Some people change their
- 13:41surname. Let's say, Coming from the
- 13:42family, from Smith, family and Smith.
- 13:50People are known for, let's say some certain traits that you
- 13:54will not, you don't like, you don't want to be associated
- 13:58with, you don't want that identity on you, even before
- 14:01getting married people, maybe your dad is Adam Smith, you
- 14:07might decide to call yourself Adam, and all Smith people
- 14:11change. Their identity on a daily basis
- 14:14but I think the the whole traditional sense were by a
- 14:20woman is demanded to take her husband's last name.
- 14:27Regardless of how she feel about it regardless of the brand.
- 14:32It's kind of a power kind of situation whereby.
- 14:37I own you II, bought you, you are mine so you Have to take my
- 14:43identity. I mean, if it's something that
- 14:46you have to, it's from time immemorial, it's the patriarchy
- 14:52that we are trying to break but it also has to do with how you
- 14:58communicate certain things, if you're getting married to
- 15:01somebody and you're saying, listen, people change last name
- 15:05on a daily basis. People, I don't think last name
- 15:09is or less. I am getting married.
- 15:12The Dango Test Zone, I would like that done with a to be the.
- 15:17I would like everybody to know that I am Lawrence.
- 15:20Here, don't go too. You know, so I think it's just
- 15:25how people view things I am happy.
- 15:28Or maybe I'm getting married into the aluminum family and my
- 15:32name is Alby like I am Lauren Sia alamelu.
- 15:35Like they know that. Yes that so it's it just has to
- 15:40do with Name. Nima has a lot.
- 15:45If you are dropping, the name that has to be a very good
- 15:47reason. Why you're dropping that name.
- 15:50I am sorry to say that marriage is not all that.
- 15:59It's not your to meet reason for you to change your name,
- 16:01especially the people or the person, the family you're
- 16:04getting married into. If that name is something, you
- 16:08don't identify yourself with. Let's say, I'm getting married
- 16:11to To a Chinese person and his name is Chang.
- 16:17Liu are going to be called Lauren salut.
- 16:22Sorry I love you babe but that is not going to happen so it's
- 16:28about identity. Regardless of whether getting
- 16:32married to a man or a man is demanding, you change your
- 16:37identity to his identity. I know people who are married.
- 16:41They took brother. Name of the husband and he.
- 16:43So name example, Nollywood actress Gloria are nosy.
- 16:50When she got married to know about young.
- 16:52She took the name. She would her name became
- 16:55Gloria. No buts young.
- 16:57I remember trying to do something on like Nollywood
- 17:00actresses old. Not not old like season
- 17:04Nollywood actresses and I was looking for their names and
- 17:08because you know them by, you know, Gloria A nosy grow them,
- 17:14you know, Regina. I asked her, you know, them by
- 17:16all these names. But there are so many 70% of
- 17:21them, you can't find them. Why?
- 17:23Because they've taken the last names of their husband.
- 17:28So these are the issues sometimes, it's not just about
- 17:33you being a dutiful wife or you being submissive or you trying
- 17:37to to be, you know, there are so many people who must have New of
- 17:42who we are introduced to you, as let's say, Gloria a nosy.
- 17:48And those people are looking for Glory and all civil right now,
- 17:51your glory and nobody on and nobody knows that you are
- 17:56Gloria, no buts, young take, for instance, or Motorola gilardi.
- 18:01Her husband's name is a candy but she added the whole thing on
- 18:04Motorola, gilardi a kaindi. So even if you're saying a
- 18:07Motorola gilardi, we know who you're talking about.
- 18:10If you're seeing a mythology logic, It came, they will know
- 18:12who you're talking about. So I think hyphenating the name
- 18:15makes it easier for people to still find you because if they
- 18:20type your name and that comes out or if they type your the
- 18:25hyphenated name, you also come out.
- 18:28So it's is something that people need to to look into people need
- 18:33to talk about especially in this age of social media where
- 18:37Brandon is almost everything. Like if they stay for Stan's,
- 18:42you know, Genevieve in Nigeria's.
- 18:44Genevieve, and IG. And though she has verified
- 18:48accounts, do everybody knows her accounts.
- 18:51Let's take, for instance, this was 20 2004 2005.
- 18:56Where social media is not even social media.
- 19:01The way we see it today and then she got married and she became
- 19:05Genevieve, who careful? So, now everybody is because
- 19:11we've seen her movies. Movies.
- 19:12We've seen the work that she's done.
- 19:14People, that we're not even there when she was acting.
- 19:18We're not even born at that time.
- 19:20They are watching her movies now.
- 19:22And they were like, we are, is Genevieve analogy there
- 19:25searching for Genevieve knowledgeable.
- 19:27What they are saying is Genevieve.
- 19:28Oh, careful, or they are not even searching for Genevieve.
- 19:31Oh, careful. When they're searching for
- 19:33Genevieve energy. That is not communal because she
- 19:36registered her counts as Genevieve.
- 19:39Who careful scientific. Way, fine.
- 19:42Tha some people may find it difficult to Mark the two names
- 19:46together, especially if you're no longer, you know, in the
- 19:51secular Limelight, if you're no longer acting or if you're no
- 19:55longer being creative, is going to impact on the people who are
- 20:00searching for you and prospective potential clients
- 20:07that are coming to you, maybe to offer you a movie deal or
- 20:10whatever. They may find it difficult to
- 20:13find you. So for me, it's, it's a
- 20:17conversation that needs to be had before getting married, is
- 20:20something that people need to sit down and talk about.
- 20:24Some people say is just a name or a name is also an identity
- 20:30and identity of who we are in somebody's asking demanding for
- 20:35somebody else, to just throw a will their identity, something
- 20:40that you've identified. Us for decades just because they
- 20:46want the pay the bride price. Then I think that's a problem.
- 20:49So I think it's just about, you know, having a conversation
- 20:52understanding why somebody is asking you to change your name
- 20:59and understanding why that person is refusing to change
- 21:02that name. If the conversation is hard
- 21:06truthfully. I think people understand each
- 21:09other more without It's being judgmental without being
- 21:14traditional, without being playing, you know, the power
- 21:18play or I am the husband or patriarchy without trying to, to
- 21:26suppress anybody without trying to only because most times is
- 21:31about ownership. Sometimes women, you know, let's
- 21:35say you start having children and your child is not saying No
- 21:42car for your husband is Journal, careful.
- 21:46And then your child is called Lukaku and then you, you are,
- 21:53you're probably Amanda, is it? So it's like, You're not looking
- 22:01at your documents and your thinking, you know, I need to do
- 22:05something about this. So sometimes we grow into
- 22:08certain things without even being told, you just see that as
- 22:12a natural progression in that happen naturally, then you don't
- 22:18even need to force people to do things.
- 22:21They would do it. Gladly just to fit in sometimes
- 22:26people changing to fit in. I don't know.
- 22:29So, please Your comments in the comment section is and I think
- 22:35I'm just going round and round in circles because it's you
- 22:38cannot box people into one people have different feelings.
- 22:45Some people do that without being even been axis.
- 22:48Instinctive is something that they know that they have to do,
- 22:52but for some other people that are struggling to do it, we have
- 22:56to force everybody to do certain things because just because it's
- 23:00the tradition or just because we want to you know, Carol's the
- 23:04egos of our husbands, I don't know.
- 23:08So please leave me a comment in the comment section and tell me
- 23:11if you've been married or if you are married, was it conversation
- 23:16for you to change your last name?
- 23:19Or was it something that you did out of respect out of
- 23:23submission, out of tradition or just because you want to?
- 23:29So that people see that you're 100% into that marriage.
- 23:34If your case was the fact that okay, I already have a brand and
- 23:38I don't want to mess up my brand and your husband understood
- 23:42that, let me know, you know, how you had a how, how did that
- 23:47conversation was that conversation had before or after
- 23:51marriage? So leave me a comment in the
- 23:52comments section. Let me know your thoughts.
- 23:54Let me know your views and thank you very much for watching.
- 23:57Today's episode. Bye bye.
