- 0:05The Day of Hearts and Flowers Bear with me through the
- 0:12historical destruction as we
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: make our way to love,
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: otherwise known as Valentine's Day.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: On February 14th in 1779,
- 0:26Captain Cook made a bunch of foolish choices and ended up being
- 0:30dismembered by
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: native Hawaiians.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: He was not, as the story goes, eaten.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: See,
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: what happened was,
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: it was Cook's third and last voyage,
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: and he was trying to find the Northwest Passage,
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: a space believed to link the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Amid this voyage,
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: he happened upon Hawaii,
- 0:56a place that had been so untouched for so long that even the
- 1:00nearby Polynesians had
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: forgotten about the islands.
- 1:05A festival was happening when Cook's ship made its way into a
- 1:09bay on what is now
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: the Big Island,
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: and it appeared that many people were there to greet his arrival.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: The Hawaiians believed Cook was the return of the god Lono,
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: a god associated with abundance,
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: putting aside differences,
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: and creating time to rest,
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: connect with others,
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: and recover in the winter rainy season.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Cook believed the crowds were there to celebrate his arrival,
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: so there was a lot of misunderstanding going on.
- 1:43Cook hung out with everyone for a month and generally outstayed
- 1:47his welcome,
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: using up limited resources and bringing the gifts of venereal disease and
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: tuberculosis to the previously untouched islands.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: After some time,
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: one of Cook's men passed away,
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: and the islanders realized that the captain and his crew were mortal.
- 2:07Cook sailed away one month after arrival,
- 2:10and the Hawaiians were glad for it.
- 2:14A day into his departure,
- 2:15one of Cook's ships was damaged in bad weather.
- 2:20He made a U-turn and returned to Hawaii to make repairs and
- 2:24grab provisions.
- 2:26But the Hawaiians were pretty sick of him and implored him to
- 2:29go away by hurling
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: rocks at his ships as they entered the bay.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: In the mayhem that ensued,
- 2:36Cook attempted to kidnap the islander's king and his men killed
- 2:41a beloved Hawaiian chief.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Tensions erupted and finally,
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Cook stood in knee-deep water,
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: unable to make his way back to the ship because he could not swim.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Cook was then killed by the islanders and,
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: believing him to at least be a chief of some status,
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: if not a god,
- 3:01he was given a warrior's burial with his bits distributed and
- 3:05his bones put in a
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: senate casket.
- 3:09His hands and other parts were delivered in a ceremonial cloth
- 3:13to his men on board his ship.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Cook's men looked at the cloth and asked, did you eat him?
- 3:22And the islanders were confused and they answered,
- 3:25what,
- 3:26do you eat your dead?
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: And that's how the rumors got started.
- 3:32On Valentine's Day,
- 3:34let's do our best to really understand what the other person is saying.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Let's not outstay our welcome.
- 3:41And when we're giving gifts,
- 3:43let's try to make sure those gifts are wanted.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Miscommunication is a plague that can be easily avoided.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Arrivals.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Understanding and being understood is an art,
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: one that extends beyond history and human relationships.
- 4:07This is so apparent as I introduce new horses to our farm and
- 4:11watch them navigate
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: an unfamiliar world,
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: learning who they can trust.
- 4:17Many animal communicators say that the number one message they
- 4:20get from horses is a
- 4:22constant fear of when they'll be taken away from their homes
- 4:25and herds and placed
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: somewhere new.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: We welcome two new horses to the farm this week.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Acclimating to new environments is difficult for horses.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: And if we're being honest, it's tough for humans too.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: So welcome home, Mocha, and welcome to your new family, Pete.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: And thank you, Laken, for making this magic happen.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Adjusting to a new place takes time.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Some horses settle in quickly,
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: while others take longer to relax,
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: figuring out who they can trust and what feels familiar.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: People aren't much different.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: It's hard to feel at home when you're always bracing for the next move,
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: waiting to see if you're really staying this time.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: I used to think that love worked the same way,
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: that it was temporary,
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: something you had to hold onto tightly or risk losing.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: But Christopher has shown me otherwise.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Heart love.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: I wrote the piece about Captain Cook,
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: the one you find above,
- 5:32last year when Valentine's formed a triune and I was on the Big
- 5:37Island of Hawaii.
- 5:39Valentine's fell on Ash Wednesday and I was with Christopher
- 5:43who made love feel
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: different from other relationships,
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: marriages,
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: and friendships I'd experienced before.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Christopher doesn't ask anything of me.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: He just gives.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: He doesn't withhold love if I change plans because of a sick horse.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: This happens a lot.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: In the months following our wedding and Hurricane Helene,
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: being in a vehicle was a chore of vertigo and nausea for me.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: But Christopher patiently watched me as we traveled,
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: noticing signals that said I didn't feel well.
- 6:17When it got to be too much,
- 6:18he turned around and brought me home to the farm.
- 6:22And as we returned,
- 6:23he praised every new mile I'd been able to stand being in the
- 6:27car each week,
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: glorying in wins so small, I read them as failures.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Until him,
- 6:35I knew love as transactions that needed my constant tending so
- 6:39I wouldn't suffer in
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: the red.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: You know the kind of relationships I'm talking about,
- 6:45the kind where your account is overdrawn and there's no way to
- 6:48go back to a
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: positive balance because the fees and interest keep adding up.
- 6:54Love that doesn't ask for anything in return can be so quiet
- 6:57you miss it at first.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: If I hadn't spent my life running to catch up,
- 7:02if I hadn't worked myself to the bone and was forced to
- 7:05stillness by pure exhaustion,
- 7:08I'm not sure I could have noticed when Christopher showed up
- 7:10with lanterns for me
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: to see in the dark and bags of food to feed me.
- 7:17I say all this on this day set aside for love because the whole
- 7:21world feels tired
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: right now and is in need of a little compassion.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: And not the kind that asks for more with thoughts and prayers,
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: but the sort that gives without stopping to ask,
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: what's in this for me?
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Christopher shows me through action how to care for others,
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: how to make amends,
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: how to be simultaneously loyal and curious to see all sides.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Loving Christopher has been an education,
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: and if patience is a virtue,
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: then Christopher may be the most virtuous man I know,
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: because he waited for me for three decades.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: I need lessons in how to be this way, to be more like him.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Lessons in loving for no reason other than to love.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Because like most of us,
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: I didn't have many role models showing me the way through the years,
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: giving me something to emulate and to practice.
- 8:17Whenever I ask Christopher where he learned this stuff,
- 8:19he says,
- 8:20since birth?
- 8:23The practice of love is so much easier than practicing piano or
- 8:27studying for a French exam.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: It's so easy, it's hard.
- 8:34I had the honor of listening to Reverend Ockham Daffin at a
- 8:38memorial service recently.
- 8:41In the service,
- 8:42he said,
- 8:44there are things that we deliberately do and things that come
- 8:48to us.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Love never ends.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Hate is easy.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Love is hard.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Grief is the experience of love from the other side.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: And love is our best example of what transcends this life.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Like intuition,
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: play,
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: and wonder,
- 9:12love is something we're born into knowing but lose as our
- 9:15brains develop and we
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: mature into the world.
- 9:19Working a lifetime to get our sense of forgotten love back is
- 9:24as worthy as
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: launching a career path and,
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: like it,
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: filled with countless opportunities for advancement.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: I could talk about love all day.
- 9:36I used to shy away from it because I'd been led to believe that
- 9:39cynicism and dry
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: humor were signs of a learned mind.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: We're taught to believe love's not worthy of study.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: I'm making up for lost years.
- 9:50Christopher recently secured housing for a mutual friend going
- 9:54through a medical crisis.
- 9:56My first reaction to the news was,
- 9:59hold on,
- 10:00this person has a sordid past.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: This person has previously taken advantage of my goodwill.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: What's the benefit for us in helping?
- 10:12I didn't say this out loud to Christopher though,
- 10:14but I would have not too long ago.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Before I spent some time studying Christopher's altruism in action,
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: I would have dug in for an all-out war over why my perspective was right.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: I opted instead to stand back and take notes this time.
- 10:34Christopher had previously encouraged me to forgive this friend
- 10:37and that ended up
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: being the right move.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Christopher spent a day off clearing out a room in his house,
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: sorting through stored things left behind by other people he'd helped.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: The friend came over for dinner.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: We laughed and spoke from our hearts.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: There are a thousand ways that helping can go wrong.
- 10:59Stories of goodwill soured by expectation,
- 11:03of generosity met with ingratitude.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: But there are just as many ways that helping can go right.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: Ways I've watched Christopher embody and I'm still learning to embrace.
- 11:17When I sat down last week with Olympic equestrian Kim Walness
- 11:21for a conversation
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: that will be launching soon on my podcast,
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: she talked about how her horse Gideon asked us to lean into heart love.
- 11:33When you've learned to trust what resonates with you and you've
- 11:37learned to open the
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: doors to your heart and your gut and your mind,
- 11:41then you may begin to feel in the presence of another being an
- 11:46all enveloping love.
- 11:49I'm not going to use the word unconditional because Gideon says
- 11:52he doesn't like the
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: word conditional at all.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: It's a love like being wrapped in warm tenderness and compassion.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: He calls this heart love.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: I've spent so much of my life analyzing love,
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: hoping to recognize the sneaky ways it shows up,
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: the ways that don't declare themselves as grand gestures,
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: but hold entire worlds and meaning.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: It's been my experience that love reveals itself in the smallest,
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: most ordinary ways,
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: like a broken shower.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: How to Love a Writer
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Not too long before Christopher told me I was intimidating,
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: we gathered for a dinner with friends at my house.
- 12:44I wrote about this in our full love story and you can find a
- 12:47link to it and read
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: all 10 parts at Stable Roots.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Several things happened that day that were notable.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: I had jumped off the back of the hay trailer and displaced my kneecap.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: A friend had driven quickly into town to escape an unlivable situation.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: And the shower in the guest room broke.
- 13:11I was hobbling around on a cane and I was pretty out of my
- 13:14skull with the kneecap shock.
- 13:17When the guest brought the shower to my attention,
- 13:19I just looked at Christopher and said,
- 13:21help.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: He went to take a look at it and I hobbled after him.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: I parked beside the tub as he fiddled with the knobs.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: What do you think is wrong with it?
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: I asked.
- 13:34It was at this point that he turned to look at me and something
- 13:37happened that I'd
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: only read about until then.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: I literally got lost in his eyes.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Where I was perched with my knee outstretched,
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: our faces were close,
- 13:50and the unexpected sudden pull of finally seeing him was so
- 13:56great that my brain
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: blipped off.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: I just sat there, stunned, pulled, mesmerized, gaping for a minute.
- 14:07By the time my brain came back online,
- 14:09I was pulling away because,
- 14:11nope,
- 14:13this is your friend.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: We don't ruin lifelong friendships with longing.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: This is stupid, Kim.
- 14:20That moment stayed in my mind until my trip to Denver when
- 14:24Christopher came clean
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: with me about my intimidation and his love.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: I've since learned that his eyes are green,
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: but with so many flecks of brown,
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: they look like mocha.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: I've learned that he is truly the funniest person on the planet,
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: and his comeback timing is second to none,
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: and someone should give him a prize for witty retorts.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: I've learned that he is uncannily intuitive and immeasurably kind.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: I've learned that he always tells the truth.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: I've learned that we can share silence as much as we can share talking.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: And when he does his thing and I do mine,
- 15:04we come back together and gleefully explain what we
- 15:07independently discovered like kids.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: I've learned that from the time we were 12 until the present moment,
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: we have been within miles of each other,
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: even when we didn't know it.
- 15:20The universe has just placed us in the same proximity until we
- 15:24figured it out.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: I've learned that when I cry, he doesn't force me to justify my sadness.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: He just holds me and tells me he's got me.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: I've learned that he pays attention.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: He pays attention to everything.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: He sees things that I just don't,
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: and he guides my gaze to what he sees so I can process the full picture.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Christopher.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: He's my best friend, my constant, my beloved.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: We've been through some serious shit to get here,
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: but knowing now what the destination was,
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't have it any other way.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: Being with him feels like home.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: It is home.
- 16:10He's the only person I want to get kicked out of a tsunami
- 16:13museum with or be told
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: we can't use the dryer after 9 p.m.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: He's the only person I trust to pass three cars on a curvy road.
- 16:22He's the only person that when I ask you want to fight,
- 16:26he says,
- 16:27only for air.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: And try as we might to dig into a good argument,
- 16:32we suck at it because we respect each other's opinion too much
- 16:36to get defensive.
- 16:39He's the only person I know who will always inevitably find a
- 16:43parking space right
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: by the front door of everywhere.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: A lot of people might classify us individually as disagreeable,
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: but we wholly agree with each other.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: What do you do when you love a writer?
- 17:01You take her to an open-air bookshop by the water and you
- 17:05understand that she will
- 17:06get lost and you're patient with her and even kind of like
- 17:11wandering around with her.
- 17:14And when she tells you to stop and take a deep whiff of the air
- 17:18in the store,
- 17:19you do it without question and you even squeeze her hand a
- 17:23little harder when she
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: closes her eyes in pure bliss and says,
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: books.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: When we spent the day looking for salamanders in the woods,
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: and I knew that he loved me,
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: but I was afraid to want anything anymore,
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: I thought something was wrong with me.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: I said, I can't eat and I can't sleep.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: And he laughed.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: But the next day when I said, when do I get to see you again?
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: He showed up minutes later,
- 17:52barefoot and feral and ready to wait for me to find him no
- 17:56matter how long I took.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: Come here, I said.
- 18:02I didn't know before him that the breaths between kisses felt
- 18:05like the ocean.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: I'm so lucky to have found my person and to have known him all along.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: I love you, Christopher.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: I trust you.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Now let's all go out and relearn love.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Love, Kim.
