Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:20Speaker 1: That's right, folks, we did it. First round is over
- 0:22Speaker 1: of the NHL Playoffs. As we're here on Unscripted breaking
- 0:25Speaker 1: down all that you need to know, we.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Will give you our second rim previews in.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Addition to talking about Maddy Cash getting paid by the
- 0:31Speaker 1: Calgary Flames and Little Cel File and sixty more theater
- 0:34Speaker 1: for you. George Clooney Tony Award nominated for his working
- 0:37Speaker 1: good Night, Good Luck, which is an outstanding show on
- 0:39Speaker 1: Bobway show is able to see. But we're recording this
- 0:42Speaker 1: Sunday night after just watching that thrilling double overtime win.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Of course, it makes sense because our special guest this
- 0:46Speaker 1: week is Steve Levy, who is known for calling the
- 0:49Speaker 1: longest games in NHL claff history. So JD. Caley is
- 0:53Speaker 1: going Levia here. We're definitely going DOUBLET and that indeed
- 0:55Speaker 1: was the case. We'll talk about all that this means
- 0:57Speaker 1: for Winnipeg moving forward. But first off, JD, you're watching
- 1:00Speaker 1: it in a slightly different environment than me and Tal
- 1:02Speaker 1: who're watching it in our basement respectively.
- 1:04Speaker 2: You were with a Howard Chuck tell Us about that.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Yes, I was, no, we had I went to meet
- 1:11Speaker 3: up with some buddies at a bar just to watch
- 1:13Speaker 3: the game and kind of just enjoy the atmosphere. And
- 1:17Speaker 3: of course in Arizon, I'm in Phoenix, Arizona. So in
- 1:20Speaker 3: classic Arizona fashion, it's a game seven, and there's about
- 1:23Speaker 3: seven people.
- 1:23Speaker 2: In the bar.
- 1:25Speaker 3: And meanwhile, if it was like the Panthers versus the Falcons,
- 1:28Speaker 3: it would be you know, it'd be jammed on a Sunday.
- 1:31Speaker 3: So so yeah, so it was it was US seven.
- 1:34Speaker 3: And then all of a sudden, you know, Eric Howard
- 1:36Speaker 3: Chuck Deal Howard Chucks then walks in and sits down
- 1:39Speaker 3: with us. So I didn't know he lived in the valley,
- 1:41Speaker 3: but you know, we started chatting and he had his
- 1:43Speaker 3: Howard Chuck gear on and from his family's foundation, and
- 1:48Speaker 3: he had his jets hat on and and it was tense.
- 1:50Speaker 2: He came in.
- 1:51Speaker 3: It was like they're down to nothing, and I mean,
- 1:53Speaker 3: what a crazy game, what a crazy comeback. But as
- 1:55Speaker 3: I was like two minutes left in the game, and
- 1:58Speaker 3: I'm like, hey, I gotta leave, like I gotta go
- 2:00Speaker 3: get ready for this podcast. The game's over. So I
- 2:03Speaker 3: start walkouting. I start walking out of the building and
- 2:06Speaker 3: as soon as I walk out, they score. So I
- 2:08Speaker 3: run back in and I'm celebrating with all of them
- 2:10Speaker 3: and cheering, and they're like, you can't leave. Now, you
- 2:12Speaker 3: can't leave. I'm like, I gotta get back. They're probably
- 2:14Speaker 3: not going to tie it up. So I walk out
- 2:17Speaker 3: at with like thirty seconds left, get in my car,
- 2:20Speaker 3: and as I start pulling away, they're facetiming me and
- 2:22Speaker 3: they're like, here, we did it.
- 2:24Speaker 2: It's I gave one second left. And I'm like, are
- 2:26Speaker 2: you you fucking crazy? I'm like, oh twice. So yeah.
- 2:29Speaker 3: So came back here, watched the game, and I mean,
- 2:32Speaker 3: he's just elated. And what a crazy, crazy game, and
- 2:36Speaker 3: what a resilient team in Winnipeg. I mean both Dallas
- 2:39Speaker 3: last game down their top demon, top forward, Winnipeg down
- 2:44Speaker 3: their top demon, top four, and guys just stepped up
- 2:46Speaker 3: and they just hung with it. And and two, I mean,
- 2:49Speaker 3: you got to say these two pretty big collapses by
- 2:52Speaker 3: Colorado one and then Saint Louis. So that's it's it's crazy.
- 2:58Speaker 3: And it's what's so amazing about the Stanley Cup playoffs
- 3:01Speaker 3: is it's just so unpredictable and just you. You never
- 3:05Speaker 3: can take your foot off the gas for one second
- 3:07Speaker 3: because somebody will just call their way back into the game.
- 3:09Speaker 2: But what a game. It is a good point.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Did Winnipeg and Dallas win or the Blues and the
- 3:15Speaker 1: Avalanche choke?
- 3:16Speaker 2: You can have that debate as much as you want.
- 3:18Speaker 1: What is inarguable is the home team wins every game
- 3:21Speaker 1: of this Blues and Jets series.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Thanks for our friends with NHL.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Never with this research, twelve series down hockey history have
- 3:26Speaker 1: seen the host go seven and oh rost. Recently, in
- 3:29Speaker 1: twenty twenty two, Hurricanes beat the Bruins.
- 3:33Speaker 3: I mean, the one thing I have to say, you
- 3:35Speaker 3: know about the resilient not only about the resiliency of
- 3:38Speaker 3: Winnipeg and Neil Pionk who had a monstrous game, but
- 3:41Speaker 3: Cole Profetti had a breakout game and a breakout series.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I think he has arrived. If I'm a Winnipeg Jets fan,
- 3:48Speaker 3: that is a young kid that you know. It makes
- 3:51Speaker 3: Winnipeg a lot more comfortable to let Nicolai Eilers walk
- 3:55Speaker 3: after this season, because you know, he is everything they
- 3:58Speaker 3: kind of wanted him to turn into when they drafted him.
- 4:01Speaker 3: And he's homegrown and it's fun to see. Yeah, I
- 4:04Speaker 3: mean that tip played down low was Sydney Crosby esque
- 4:08Speaker 3: and then he gets another tip goal to tie up
- 4:10Speaker 3: with one second left. He was out in the biggest moments.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Young kid just played hard on pucks and you know,
- 4:15Speaker 3: for him to have some weird contract issues with Winnipeg,
- 4:18Speaker 3: I mean, I think he's just done a tremendous.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Job of developing and and.
- 4:22Speaker 3: It's it's fun to see, you know that, just that
- 4:25Speaker 3: building in Winnipeg, and you know there's a franchise that
- 4:28Speaker 3: deserved a first round win, which they haven't had one
- 4:30Speaker 3: since twenty eighteen. Yeah, I just think that it was
- 4:34Speaker 3: so deserving to see that fan base get that and
- 4:36Speaker 3: the way they did, in the fashion they did it
- 4:38Speaker 3: is just it's it's very heartwarming to see that.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I'm with it.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Nothing quite like the white out I had four games
- 4:44Speaker 1: it was sound problem like that crowd is the electric
- 4:46Speaker 1: when you're seeing the go bananas like that, it's you know,
- 4:48Speaker 1: the entire city is rooting for that team. That Francis. Yes,
- 4:51Speaker 1: you like your stay goss there in Winnipeg. I would
- 4:53Speaker 1: to further the point because it's so great with you
- 4:55Speaker 1: being a defenseman one of My favorite parts of playoff
- 4:57Speaker 1: hockey is especially if there's an injury something happens, which
- 5:00Speaker 1: unfortunate half for Josh Morrisey.
- 5:01Speaker 2: One of our favorites top de defense from the league
- 5:03Speaker 2: is you and I have agreed.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Is you start to see the total ice time of
- 5:07Speaker 1: the remaining five defensemen. Yeah, and Peok forty six point fifteen,
- 5:12Speaker 1: Sambri forty four, Damello thirty six, forty forty thirty three
- 5:17Speaker 1: oh two.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Like again, you can speak to this, I can't.
- 5:19Speaker 1: That's insane to these guys are playing two hockey games
- 5:22Speaker 1: out of the greatest pressure imaginable.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:25Speaker 3: I think my first or second year against the Kings,
- 5:29Speaker 3: we went to two overtimes and I think we lost
- 5:31Speaker 3: the demon in that game as well. I think I
- 5:33Speaker 3: played thirty two to thirty three minutes. And it's an
- 5:36Speaker 3: interesting I had like pools of water in my skates,
- 5:39Speaker 3: like my socks were just completely soaked, and you're trying
- 5:41Speaker 3: to skate up ice, but you seem to get kind
- 5:44Speaker 3: of into a little bit better of a flow and
- 5:46Speaker 3: your the rhythm and you take shorter shifts, but the
- 5:49Speaker 3: rhythm of the game just seems to kind of fall
- 5:52Speaker 3: in place for you. It's it's hard to explain. It's
- 5:55Speaker 3: you know a lot of the times you kind of
- 5:57Speaker 3: heard the guys, the guys on TNT were talking about it,
- 6:00Speaker 3: and they're like, it seems like they're gonna be more
- 6:01Speaker 3: and more comfortable. And when you're a demon like that,
- 6:03Speaker 3: you just kind of keep it simple. You keep the
- 6:05Speaker 3: puck moving north, you wait for your opportunities, and you
- 6:09Speaker 3: almost play a little bit better. As a unit of five.
- 6:11Speaker 3: There's a lot of chatter on the bench and yeah,
- 6:14Speaker 3: it's it's something that's hard to explain why, but guys
- 6:18Speaker 3: just step up in the right times, in the right moments.
- 6:20Speaker 3: And I thought that decor as a whole just can't
- 6:23Speaker 3: say enough good things about them. And Neil Pionk has
- 6:25Speaker 3: really developed, Dylan Samdberg. I mean a ton of credit
- 6:29Speaker 3: goes to all five of these guys.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Just a thought on the Blues, how do you evaluate
- 6:34Speaker 1: this because the one hand, you say, well, guy, I
- 6:37Speaker 1: who was expecting the Blues to do anything. They had
- 6:38Speaker 1: an amazing second half up particularly in at home ice.
- 6:42Speaker 1: If you just go like gold differential, like they really
- 6:44Speaker 1: hammered Winnipeg at home, whereas the Jets barely speakpot home.
- 6:48Speaker 1: But I'm with you. You can also look at it
- 6:49Speaker 1: and go your gag. A three win lead in game seven,
- 6:52Speaker 1: that's a tough build, A swallow.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Yeah, there's I think there's more positives than negatives in
- 6:57Speaker 3: this series. I don't think anybody had this going seven.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I think everybody was very bullish on Winnipeg. You got
- 7:03Speaker 3: to think too. You know, Saint Louis was missing Dylan Holloway.
- 7:06Speaker 3: That is arguably their best player down the stretch. They're
- 7:09Speaker 3: missing him, and you know, I thought the only tough
- 7:13Speaker 3: thing for me is moving forward. They do have an
- 7:15Speaker 3: aging decorp and now they're all a year older, a
- 7:18Speaker 3: lot of guys with a lot of miles on them.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I don't know if you can run it back. I'm
- 7:22Speaker 3: sure Ryan Soudor will be not coming back to that team.
- 7:25Speaker 3: I just can't see it. In a world They'll probably
- 7:27Speaker 3: bringing a young kid, but everybody gets a little bit older.
- 7:30Speaker 3: They do have a youthful, you know, top nine, top
- 7:35Speaker 3: six up front, So I think they're good. You know,
- 7:39Speaker 3: you have a great coaching staff, you get a great
- 7:41Speaker 3: front office, you got a lot of good talented studs
- 7:44Speaker 3: up front. I think they're not far off to making
- 7:47Speaker 3: another run, but I think the windows, like now, especially
- 7:49Speaker 3: with that decor, you want to keep as much of
- 7:51Speaker 3: that veteran decor there. And with Jordan Bennington, who's kind
- 7:54Speaker 3: of shown how good he can be in these moments
- 7:58Speaker 3: and nothing he didn't, I don't think he. I think
- 8:00Speaker 3: he outplayed Connor Hellibuck for that series. Majority of that series,
- 8:05Speaker 3: they just one or two lucky goals was the difference.
- 8:08Speaker 3: But you know, I I'm bullish on them moving into
- 8:11Speaker 3: next year, like a lot of these teams, you know.
- 8:14Speaker 3: I saw Brad richardson yesterday and fan of the show,
- 8:16Speaker 3: and we were talking and we both kind of said
- 8:19Speaker 3: the same thing. I was like, this year is like
- 8:21Speaker 3: the most parody there's ever been in the league per team,
- 8:24Speaker 3: Like every team I feel like in the West could
- 8:26Speaker 3: have could win the Cup. And in the East maybe
- 8:28Speaker 3: you know minus injured New Jersey Devils in the Montreal Canadians,
- 8:32Speaker 3: like same thing in the East. Like there's a lot
- 8:34Speaker 3: of teams that can that can win, and so it
- 8:37Speaker 3: was very tight, and I thought it's a lot tighter
- 8:39Speaker 3: than everybody thought. But you know, great first round, but
- 8:42Speaker 3: in Saint Louis and Minnesota as well, I'd say I'm
- 8:45Speaker 3: bullish moving forward, so I don't think they lost anything
- 8:48Speaker 3: from getting knocked out in the first round.
- 8:50Speaker 1: As I've said on this podcast, I've christened you no
- 8:53Speaker 1: strech Demurs, but it might have to be no stra.
- 8:55Speaker 2: What the hell were you thinking?
- 8:56Speaker 1: Because you have the Avalanche going all the way my bracket,
- 9:00Speaker 1: you're talking. You kept talking about their speed and now
- 9:04Speaker 1: their speeders at a different level. They expred their way
- 9:07Speaker 1: speedily out of the playoffs after gagging once again choking
- 9:11Speaker 1: against the Dallas Stars.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Again.
- 9:12Speaker 1: You a lot of company here who picked Colorado to win.
- 9:15Speaker 1: But what the hell happened to your avalancheer?
- 9:18Speaker 3: Oh, I don't, man, It's tough. I think the Decorps
- 9:24Speaker 3: really let down the team as a whole. I think
- 9:27Speaker 3: they brought in some veteran guys that did not play
- 9:31Speaker 3: great hockey in that series. Overall, I thought the decor
- 9:34Speaker 3: of Dallas missing Miro Hayskin, outplayed them categorically. They're more physical.
- 9:39Speaker 3: I just think Colorado needs to get a little bit
- 9:41Speaker 3: more physical in the back end. The only guy that
- 9:43Speaker 3: hits is Josh Manson. And listen, their top guys got
- 9:49Speaker 3: outplayed in the biggest moments against the top guys of
- 9:53Speaker 3: the Dallas Stars. You know, you look at Why Johnston
- 9:55Speaker 3: and Miko Randon who had just Turkey Lee in Game seven,
- 9:59Speaker 3: but you know Why Johnston was unbelievable once again. You know,
- 10:04Speaker 3: Jamie Benn, you look at Rupe Hints, like those guys
- 10:08Speaker 3: just kind of over that sixty minute hockey. They just
- 10:12Speaker 3: outplayed them. And I thought they all played the top guys.
- 10:14Speaker 3: They had some flashes Colorado, but you know, it just
- 10:18Speaker 3: it's interesting. I you listen to Nate McKinnon after the game,
- 10:22Speaker 3: and you kind of watched him during that series, and
- 10:24Speaker 3: he's kind of yelling at Charlie Coyle. He looked frustrated
- 10:27Speaker 3: the whole series, and after he goes, well, he just lost,
- 10:30Speaker 3: you know, to a team missing their best forward and
- 10:33Speaker 3: best team manse I don't know where we go from here,
- 10:35Speaker 3: and seemed a little defeated, and it's just tough because
- 10:40Speaker 3: you know, I don't know if man, it's hard to
- 10:44Speaker 3: say where Colorado goes from here because they they retooled
- 10:47Speaker 3: mid season and they didn't get it done. So you're
- 10:50Speaker 3: gonna lose a lot of guys. You're gonna lose brock Nelson.
- 10:52Speaker 3: You mortgaged your quite. You know, you're I like the
- 10:55Speaker 3: trade initially, but him not scoring in the playoffs and
- 10:58Speaker 3: then losing Callum Richie Anna first is gonna hurt them
- 11:01Speaker 3: because he's Brock Nelson's going to Minnesota. He's gonna get
- 11:05Speaker 3: overpaid in Minnesota, which good for him. But then you
- 11:08Speaker 3: got Charlie Cole. You got some older guys on the
- 11:09Speaker 3: on the bottom six, you know, man, they could have
- 11:13Speaker 3: used Miko Ranton, and though.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Jesus well that one. Oh, you're right because it's it's
- 11:19Speaker 2: one thing you're no, you're right.
- 11:20Speaker 1: No, you're right, because it's like it's one thing you lose,
- 11:22Speaker 1: but you lose with the guy who you had just
- 11:24Speaker 1: a few months ago, and.
- 11:25Speaker 2: He just torches you. He starts the season.
- 11:27Speaker 1: In Colorado, played thirteen games in Carolina, feels like a
- 11:30Speaker 1: blip on the radar. He takes over for Dallas, and
- 11:32Speaker 1: specifically late in the series first four games he was
- 11:34Speaker 1: quiet like, oh, they're doing a great job shutting down Ranson.
- 11:36Speaker 1: But eleven points in games five, six, and seven, a
- 11:40Speaker 1: hat trick in the third period of Game seven, going
- 11:42Speaker 1: along with the assists on Wyatt Johnson's game winner, first
- 11:45Speaker 1: ever hat trick in the third period of a game
- 11:48Speaker 1: seven in hockey history. I mean again, people loving Colorado's
- 11:53Speaker 1: the front row. They haven't won a game seven now
- 11:54Speaker 1: since two thousand and two. And Pete de boor your
- 11:57Speaker 1: boy improves his record in game seven is to nine
- 12:00Speaker 1: and oh, I mean props to Ranson, but also props
- 12:03Speaker 1: the coach tevot nine and oh, you can't be even
- 12:06Speaker 1: in a game of seven.
- 12:07Speaker 3: I listen, you could probably say, like you know, two
- 12:09Speaker 3: and oh, three and oh, you know it's on the players,
- 12:12Speaker 3: on the players, but nine and oh, you're you're doing
- 12:14Speaker 3: something and you're getting that team to believe in a
- 12:17Speaker 3: way you know that's not luck and and versus. You know,
- 12:20Speaker 3: same thing with Bedner. I think he's a great coach,
- 12:23Speaker 3: but they panicked way too much. You know, they they're
- 12:27Speaker 3: up to fifteen minutes left in the game and it
- 12:30Speaker 3: they just shut their brains off. And no lead is
- 12:33Speaker 3: safe in the new NHL. But I just feel like
- 12:35Speaker 3: you have to shut it down a little bit again.
- 12:37Speaker 3: They're missing their top four and their top team, and
- 12:40Speaker 3: and you let Miko ran and run rough shot all
- 12:42Speaker 3: over you guys, which he did the previous two games.
- 12:44Speaker 3: But I just thought that, Yeah, too much space on
- 12:47Speaker 3: the penalty kill on the one, they allow Miko to
- 12:49Speaker 3: walk down the middle on the first one, and then
- 12:53Speaker 3: you know it's it was just I kind of was like,
- 12:57Speaker 3: you know, I thought Mackenzie Blackwood had a great game,
- 12:59Speaker 3: but I just think all those goals, he couldn't do
- 13:01Speaker 3: a thing. The penalty kill I thought was atrocious at
- 13:04Speaker 3: that point of the game. You can't give up that
- 13:06Speaker 3: back door tap in to Whi Johnston. But yeah, it's
- 13:09Speaker 3: it's man like Miko's in, didn't I ask U tal
- 13:13Speaker 3: what's that stat of him with playoff playoff scorers. I
- 13:17Speaker 3: know he's like top five in the all time in
- 13:20Speaker 3: the NHL with eighty games played minimum.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Right now, Miko Rantinen is averaging one point two eight
- 13:27Speaker 4: points per game in the playoffs for his career. The
- 13:30Speaker 4: only players in NHL history who have played a minimum
- 13:33Speaker 4: of eighty career playoff games who are ahead of him
- 13:36Speaker 4: are some guys you may have heard of named Wayne Gretzky,
- 13:40Speaker 4: Mario Lemieux, Connor McDavid Leon, dr Dryseidle, and Nathan McKinnon.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Those are the only guys in the history of the
- 13:47Speaker 4: game ahead of him minimum eighty playoff games, and he's
- 13:50Speaker 4: just ahead of a group of guys named Messier Or
- 13:53Speaker 4: and Bossy.
- 13:54Speaker 2: But like, how crazy is that?
- 13:56Speaker 1: Ad Net like the greatest players ever in your rightcord,
- 13:58Speaker 1: you'd never think of that. The guy's a great player. Store,
- 14:01Speaker 1: he's not like Bossy. You nuts, it's not Bobby Or
- 14:03Speaker 1: it's not Eithan Kennon. Again, that's why I keep thinking
- 14:06Speaker 1: I'm Colorado. Im like I got McKinnon in my car
- 14:08Speaker 1: and I couldn't win around.
- 14:09Speaker 3: For two hundred and fifty thousand they traded him. Is
- 14:13Speaker 3: the stories we're hearing hundred and fifty k. That's like
- 14:16Speaker 3: us being underpaid for this podcast. Thank you for bringing
- 14:20Speaker 3: it back to us, Miko Ranton and of the podcast.
- 14:22Speaker 2: We are hoping to get a big bump going into
- 14:24Speaker 2: season two.
- 14:24Speaker 1: We'll drop that now early and often the second round preview,
- 14:28Speaker 1: and again JD will be very humble about the fact
- 14:30Speaker 1: the bracket hasn't gone the way he wanted to.
- 14:31Speaker 2: But I think we start fresh now. Screw the bracket.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Now we're going for three three of eight.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Three p K better than PK su Man PK doing
- 14:41Speaker 3: two of eight, so I got beat by one. Hey,
- 14:43Speaker 3: you know what's the best I was gonna say, I
- 14:44Speaker 3: wanted to ask you. Yeah, we we got to be
- 14:47Speaker 3: kind of celebrating a bit because we predicted is no,
- 14:51Speaker 3: well Mike Sullivan won. Yeah, we'll take our flowers. But
- 14:55Speaker 3: we we talked about a Canadian team winning the cup.
- 14:57Speaker 2: So we got three out around one. Not bad. Hey,
- 15:01Speaker 2: that was a bit we needed.
- 15:03Speaker 3: I don't know if Winnipeg, but Edmonton surprised us and
- 15:06Speaker 3: we're we're we're kind of cooking here.
- 15:08Speaker 2: We are got three and a round too, so we're
- 15:11Speaker 2: still good. That is a good point of redempt if
- 15:13Speaker 2: we're waving the flag right now. Trew with the Tariffs Stars.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Jets Winnipeg win three or four against Dallas during the season,
- 15:20Speaker 1: including a big four nothing statement win last month. Dallas
- 15:23Speaker 1: maybe the favorite after his South Hayes Gonn and Jason
- 15:25Speaker 1: Robertson expected back for Game one. No update on Mark
- 15:28Speaker 1: Scheiffley or Josh Morrison again recording this Sunday night. We'll
- 15:30Speaker 1: see what happens. First playoffs years between these two teams
- 15:33Speaker 1: and the Jets. Two point zero Era Ranson's exploits amazing,
- 15:36Speaker 1: Kyle conn are great, twelve points against Saint Louis that
- 15:40Speaker 1: ties Ranton and for the tops the NHL this playoff season,
- 15:43Speaker 1: my listen, I think it's Stars and six United. Said before,
- 15:46Speaker 1: the winner of this series wins the Stanley Cup. So
- 15:49Speaker 1: I can't go against the Stars. Maybe Winnipeg has some
- 15:51Speaker 1: fight them. Obviously be nice to get back Morrisy and Shiffley,
- 15:53Speaker 1: but I would be hard pressed to see winning this.
- 15:56Speaker 5: You.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm gotta rock with Dallas because I took I
- 16:01Speaker 3: better not go against the team that knocked out the
- 16:03Speaker 3: team that had winning the Cup. So I have to
- 16:05Speaker 3: say I have to go down. I gotta ride with
- 16:06Speaker 3: Dallas all the way. And I think if Robertson comes
- 16:10Speaker 3: back and Miro and Shiefley's on one hundred percent and
- 16:13Speaker 3: more season, I don't see a world in which Winnipeg
- 16:16Speaker 3: that that series against Saint Louis. Regardless who won that,
- 16:21Speaker 3: that took a lot out of both of them. Like
- 16:23Speaker 3: that was the most physical series by far. You watch
- 16:26Speaker 3: that overtime, they were still fucking running each other in
- 16:29Speaker 3: overtime and I was like, it's boys, we're trying to
- 16:31Speaker 3: score a goal here. It just was dirty and I
- 16:33Speaker 3: think a lot of guys are gonna be banged up,
- 16:35Speaker 3: and man, Dallas just looks fast. And Dallas's back end
- 16:38Speaker 3: even you know you're gonna have Mirro back. But they're
- 16:41Speaker 3: big on the back end too, and they're very you know,
- 16:43Speaker 3: I think the thing that Colorado didn't realize was how
- 16:47Speaker 3: physical they were gonna be on the back end. That
- 16:49Speaker 3: that lean, that lean bischel is is a big boys
- 16:52Speaker 3: the fridge, the Drome Bettis of the NHL. Yeah, so
- 16:55Speaker 3: they're gonna they're gonna have their work cutout from.
- 16:57Speaker 2: And Jake Gotteners.
- 16:58Speaker 3: It's it's gonna come down to hellabuck and what Connor
- 17:02Speaker 3: can do. But I haven't seen enough to to make
- 17:05Speaker 3: me confident in any aspect of this series. And if
- 17:09Speaker 3: I'm Dallas watching this, you know exactly how to get
- 17:11Speaker 3: to him. It's it's traffic to the net and shoot
- 17:14Speaker 3: it high.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Yeah, hellibugs performance certainly uninspiring. So if you're looking at.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Goaltending, I don't know how you wouldn't be really raving
- 17:20Speaker 1: about Atten during Dallas in this series Hurricanes and Capitals.
- 17:22Speaker 1: She made a good point. Both of those teams were
- 17:24Speaker 1: very much tested here. The Jets and the Stars, the
- 17:26Speaker 1: Kaynes and Capitals. Neither of them are very tested as
- 17:28Speaker 1: you did correctly predict Monreal will get one game at
- 17:30Speaker 1: the Bell Center. So the Capitals move on and the Devils,
- 17:34Speaker 1: you know, marks me thought might be better than he was.
- 17:36Speaker 2: I missed. I missed that one. They were under me.
- 17:38Speaker 3: You're looking for this walk. They lost seven guys in
- 17:41Speaker 3: the first game.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Correct, So they split their four meetings this season. They
- 17:45Speaker 1: closed up their season by splitting two games eight days
- 17:47Speaker 1: apart in April. Take that for what you will. Ovechen
- 17:50Speaker 1: scored four goals and Washington's five game win over Montreal.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Sebastian Ajo Carolin, his top guy in the first run
- 17:55Speaker 1: against Jersey, led the team eight points in five games,
- 17:58Speaker 1: including the double ot winner in game five to close
- 18:01Speaker 1: up the series. If I'm just going by talent JD,
- 18:03Speaker 1: I will say Capital Since what do you got?
- 18:06Speaker 2: Wow?
- 18:06Speaker 5: You went?
- 18:07Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 18:07Speaker 3: I I don't disagree. I have Oh man, Jordan Martino's
- 18:12Speaker 3: gonna want to kill me.
- 18:14Speaker 1: By the way, Jordan MARTINOK is responsible for the highest
- 18:16Speaker 1: rated episode of Anchelling scripted so far.
- 18:18Speaker 2: So we love Marty and.
- 18:20Speaker 3: The problem is is I took Jersey. He texted me,
- 18:22Speaker 3: he said, keep my team's name out of your mouth.
- 18:24Speaker 3: And then I'm I'm flirting with taking the capitals, but
- 18:29Speaker 3: I honestly go bold. I think I'm gonna go as
- 18:32Speaker 3: much as I was talking with EJ. Raddick, you know,
- 18:36Speaker 3: another fan of the show, Nice he you know, we
- 18:39Speaker 3: kind of talked about and he goes. Eventually, the issue
- 18:42Speaker 3: in net for Carolina is gonna come to a head
- 18:45Speaker 3: because Freddie Anderson cannot play when if he's not rested,
- 18:48Speaker 3: he needs to be rested. Co check off is good
- 18:51Speaker 3: at times, but I don't think he'll be good enough
- 18:53Speaker 3: to stop when it stop washing it Washington, But I
- 18:57Speaker 3: just think Carolina matches up better. I think, you know,
- 19:01Speaker 3: Washington likes to really play a little bit cute coming
- 19:03Speaker 3: out of their own end, and we saw Montreal really
- 19:06Speaker 3: get to them of the Ford check. I think Carolina's
- 19:08Speaker 3: four checks on another level. And I do think if
- 19:11Speaker 3: Svechnikov stays on this scoring pace that you know, they've
- 19:15Speaker 3: needed him for years, they've needed a game breaker, and
- 19:17Speaker 3: you know he kind of did that last series. I
- 19:19Speaker 3: think they get past Washington. Wow, and then you know,
- 19:24Speaker 3: so I'm gonna go Carolina in seven.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Third is Marty give it a little push, Marty, clip
- 19:32Speaker 2: that and send it to him.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Tell all right, we'll get to the rest of what
- 19:35Speaker 1: to expect you in the second room. But first, Steve Leeve,
- 19:37Speaker 1: he's been the face of hockey out of USPN for
- 19:39Speaker 1: so many years, he'll tell us, but his distinguished career
- 19:42Speaker 1: not only calling hockey and all those overtime games, but
- 19:44Speaker 1: also take us behind the curtain on Alexander Vetchkin and
- 19:48Speaker 1: this is sports and a commercial.
- 19:49Speaker 2: That's next after this.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Our special guest, ESPN's main man in the studio throughout
- 20:07Speaker 1: the Stanley Cup playoffs as the second round opens across
- 20:10Speaker 1: ESPN's family of networks. He's been on the air for
- 20:12Speaker 1: the World Wide Leader since nineteen ninety three, Wow, thirty
- 20:14Speaker 1: plus years at the mothership on the best in the business.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Since that time, particularly covering the NHL, he's been the
- 20:19Speaker 1: voice somebody and at football he's been a MAINSTAD sports center.
- 20:22Speaker 1: And of course he and I were both little league
- 20:24Speaker 1: coaches in West Harford, which is a story we'll be
- 20:26Speaker 1: telling you in a minute.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen. Steve Leavy leaves, it's great to see
- 20:29Speaker 2: you man.
- 20:29Speaker 5: Hey, how you doing, guys, good to good to be
- 20:32Speaker 5: with you. Thanks for having me on.
- 20:33Speaker 1: First off, it's great to work at ESPN with your longevity,
- 20:36Speaker 1: But how envious were you the last time I saw
- 20:38Speaker 1: you in New Jersey Amazon Prime invading the turf. We
- 20:41Speaker 1: had a studio which was the size of Ben Hurr.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I mean we have we have a cast and crew
- 20:45Speaker 1: that put you in PK.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Subant to shame. How inferior did you feel? That was?
- 20:49Speaker 5: Like Fox's pregame for the Super Bowl. You guys had
- 20:53Speaker 5: like twenty five on air people. Talent if you will,
- 20:57Speaker 5: but a lot of on air people. I looked around, like, oh,
- 21:00Speaker 5: we don't even have our producer with us. They were
- 21:02Speaker 5: in Bristol. I'm lucky Eve a truck, you know so.
- 21:06Speaker 5: But you guys are a big deal. If you're a
- 21:08Speaker 5: big deal, it's a big deal, it's a big show.
- 21:10Speaker 1: The best person we did the scrub would talk it
- 21:12Speaker 1: and we thought we were We just made it for
- 21:13Speaker 1: you to leave, Like, well, now you guys have your
- 21:15Speaker 1: own separate scrub.
- 21:16Speaker 2: What is this?
- 21:16Speaker 5: And if you guys each have two or three questions,
- 21:19Speaker 5: I mean, ale, it's an our press conference. Craziness.
- 21:23Speaker 3: How are those scrubs in the preparation for that? Do
- 21:25Speaker 3: you find like over the years, it's it's you've gotten
- 21:27Speaker 3: more comfortable or is there something a nuance in a
- 21:31Speaker 3: certain way to take it that allows you to get
- 21:33Speaker 3: more from the coaching staffs.
- 21:35Speaker 5: It's really I found, it's really about relationships, you know,
- 21:38Speaker 5: and some guys you know, right, some guys you know,
- 21:42Speaker 5: some guys you know that you have really they're not
- 21:45Speaker 5: gonna They're not gonna burn you, and I'm not gonna
- 21:48Speaker 5: burn them.
- 21:48Speaker 1: You know.
- 21:48Speaker 5: It's sort of a trust factor, right. And then you
- 21:51Speaker 5: get into some older guys who are old school, who
- 21:54Speaker 5: probably you know, super tight lipped, and they don't want
- 21:57Speaker 5: to play it all, they don't want to joke. I
- 22:00Speaker 5: found Lobbyoletta was extremely straight, you know, and really hard
- 22:03Speaker 5: to get anything from. And then you get new guys
- 22:06Speaker 5: who aren't sort of sure how this is gonna go,
- 22:09Speaker 5: you know, and a sort of trying to figure it
- 22:11Speaker 5: out themselves. So I just we just did the game
- 22:14Speaker 5: in Minnesota with John Hines, and there was all these
- 22:17Speaker 5: rumors in the press room, Hey, Marc Andre Fleury's gonna play.
- 22:21Speaker 5: It's gonna be flurry starting tonight, and so we asked Hines, Yeah,
- 22:24Speaker 5: you know, I just want to make sure Gus is
- 22:26Speaker 5: good to go ton is yet Gus he's one hundred percent,
- 22:29Speaker 5: and I'm like, John, yeah, you're giving it to me
- 22:31Speaker 5: straight right, I'm hearing a lot of buzz. So I
- 22:34Speaker 5: followed up with him and he goes, no, I wouldn't
- 22:36Speaker 5: do that to you. I'm like, okay, cause some guys
- 22:38Speaker 5: have and I won't name names, but absolutely, next time
- 22:41Speaker 5: you get Sean and ray On you can ask them
- 22:44Speaker 5: they have absolutely been misled by a head coach ninety
- 22:47Speaker 5: minutes before puck drop. I'm a starting goalie on an
- 22:50Speaker 5: ABC game, and that is flat out wrong. You know,
- 22:55Speaker 5: you don't want to tell people publicly, that's fine, but
- 22:57Speaker 5: at least you tell the broadcasters, Hey, don't say it
- 22:59Speaker 5: before puck drop, or just save it for the open.
- 23:02Speaker 5: You know, we're all trying to work together on this thing.
- 23:04Speaker 5: Let's not try to make somebody look foolish. But I
- 23:07Speaker 5: really enjoy him. I get a lot out of them.
- 23:09Speaker 5: But I'm like a three question guy, you know, and
- 23:12Speaker 5: I've written it down. I know exactly what I want
- 23:14Speaker 5: to ask, and I find it can be very helpful.
- 23:17Speaker 2: We've had mcdone on the pod.
- 23:18Speaker 1: You're right, it's not suffer full as gladly as you
- 23:20Speaker 1: and I both know, a great guy to go drinking
- 23:22Speaker 1: with it him a late night diner because Sean lets
- 23:23Speaker 1: it fly. We can talk with this year's playoffs leaves
- 23:26Speaker 1: me well a little bit, but you know, for me,
- 23:28Speaker 1: I'll always think of you, Flyers, Penguins, Marathon Man, Keith Primo.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I know you told the stories before, but kind of
- 23:33Speaker 1: like how Joe Tess our buddy has become snaymous with
- 23:35Speaker 1: these great college football finances, the guy and he tell's
- 23:38Speaker 1: an overtime game. Steve Levey was on the call first off,
- 23:41Speaker 1: how did your bladder hold up? And tell me about
- 23:43Speaker 1: that Flyers game with Primo Scord.
- 23:45Speaker 5: So it's really an experienced thing, like I got better
- 23:47Speaker 5: at it doing more of them, right, because you never
- 23:50Speaker 5: know how you're going to react. And so I believe
- 23:54Speaker 5: I have two five overtimes and a third game that
- 23:58Speaker 5: was forty five seconds from a fifth overtime. And I
- 24:03Speaker 5: think Gord just recently passed me two years. I still
- 24:06Speaker 5: have the longest game ever broadcast, and I think I
- 24:09Speaker 5: had the top three. Maybe I have three in the
- 24:11Speaker 5: top four, two of the top five, something like that.
- 24:14Speaker 5: I'm still number one. Nice for those for those who say,
- 24:17Speaker 5: you know, records are made to be broken. That's bullshit. Okay,
- 24:20Speaker 5: I want that longest game, man, are you kidding? Like,
- 24:23Speaker 5: I want to be known for something. I want to
- 24:24Speaker 5: hang my hat on something. I'll be pissed if somebody
- 24:27Speaker 5: beats me out on the longest televised game. But so
- 24:30Speaker 5: the first one I had was at the Old Cap
- 24:32Speaker 5: Center in Landover, Washington, Pittsburgh. Guys were Daryl Ray and
- 24:38Speaker 5: Peter Nedven wound up ending that game. So this gets
- 24:41Speaker 5: back to the experience part of it, because I found
- 24:44Speaker 5: in the first overtime my excitement level at xuberant's voice
- 24:48Speaker 5: volume is already up here, right. This is videos people
- 24:52Speaker 5: can see here, right, Okay, but if they're on, say
- 24:55Speaker 5: on radio, see here, really is not gonna help anybody.
- 24:59Speaker 5: And then so it gets ratcheted up. Okay, now we're
- 25:01Speaker 5: in the second overtime. By the third overtime, I've got
- 25:04Speaker 5: nowhere to go, right, I've got nowhere to go. My
- 25:08Speaker 5: heart is in my throat now on you know, icing's
- 25:11Speaker 5: you know, like it's just insane. And so now we're
- 25:15Speaker 5: in the fourth overtime. Now we're into the fifth overtime,
- 25:18Speaker 5: and you know, you get to a double overtime. This
- 25:21Speaker 5: is a call that's going to be replayed. You really
- 25:24Speaker 5: don't want to blow that call. You don't want to
- 25:26Speaker 5: miss the name. It looked like an eight, it turns
- 25:28Speaker 5: out to be a nine. And you know that old
- 25:31Speaker 5: Cap center was really dark, and I think we're in
- 25:33Speaker 5: a corner when I didn't center ice and so I
- 25:36Speaker 5: wound up getting the ned bed call. But I just
- 25:38Speaker 5: remember being totally out of gas to the point where
- 25:44Speaker 5: I had I went out of words right, like it
- 25:46Speaker 5: was just strictly last names, you know, Lemieux, Jones, Smith,
- 25:53Speaker 5: ned Bed score and it was it was what Mario
- 25:57Speaker 5: got kicked out of the game, kicked out of that
- 25:59Speaker 5: game there. I think he ran into the goalie, got
- 26:01Speaker 5: in a fight. It was a I mean, how Mario,
- 26:04Speaker 5: you'll get kicked out of a five overtime stay like
- 26:07Speaker 5: a playoff game. What referee is doing that? Right? But
- 26:10Speaker 5: that was all way So yeah, and the other story
- 26:14Speaker 5: about that, I'm always from Kevin Kaminski. You remember Killer,
- 26:18Speaker 5: He didn't play a single shift. He might not even
- 26:21Speaker 5: played in regulation, okay, and so Barry Melrose and he
- 26:25Speaker 5: you don't lose Saskatchewan guys, they are like cousins or whatever.
- 26:27Speaker 5: I remember Barry saying, hey, you had the best seat
- 26:29Speaker 5: in the house. But a five overtime game. I don't
- 26:31Speaker 5: think he ever saw the ice, which is hard to
- 26:33Speaker 5: do so anyway, So fast forward. Then I got another
- 26:35Speaker 5: one of those games. I was much more relaxed in
- 26:39Speaker 5: the third period. This could be overtime now, I'm okay.
- 26:42Speaker 5: First overtime, second and ratchet up to a normal level.
- 26:46Speaker 5: That was in Pittsburgh with Panger. That was Keith Primo
- 26:49Speaker 5: that you're referencing. The funny story about that is we
- 26:53Speaker 5: had a runner who would try to find us, you know,
- 26:55Speaker 5: cold pizza or a stale popcorn. The igloo ran out
- 27:00Speaker 5: of everything at that point. The runner even left us
- 27:03Speaker 5: mid game. It was a school night. His mom took
- 27:06Speaker 5: him home. Like that's that's what we're dealing and who
- 27:09Speaker 5: can blame him? Right, Like, you know, people are sleeping
- 27:11Speaker 5: in the crowd. Uh, there's all of that. Hangar. I
- 27:15Speaker 5: believe I think he's okay with me telling the story.
- 27:17Speaker 5: I know thirty years later, he of course was in
- 27:20Speaker 5: Mario suite at the time. Pierre LaRouche, probably enjoying some
- 27:23Speaker 5: red wine, you know, between overtime periods while I'm drinking
- 27:27Speaker 5: you know, diet coke without any fuzzy visited so and
- 27:32Speaker 5: then I the last one was, uh like I think
- 27:34Speaker 5: it was close to five more times with Dallas Anaheim.
- 27:37Speaker 5: I think it was an afternoon ABC, Peter Soakora and
- 27:40Speaker 5: my game. And so those are the three games. Listen.
- 27:44Speaker 5: There's no skill like to get those games right. That's
- 27:47Speaker 5: totally fluky to be in the building at that time.
- 27:51Speaker 5: But when you get there then you really want to
- 27:53Speaker 5: nail them. And I've been fortunate. I feel pretty good
- 27:55Speaker 5: about the calls there.
- 27:56Speaker 3: So you know, talk about these these Stanley Cup playoffs
- 27:59Speaker 3: so far, and you know what a wild turn of
- 28:01Speaker 3: events in a lot of these games. Do you have
- 28:02Speaker 3: a moment that's kind of because you've been at the
- 28:04Speaker 3: forefront with PK and MESS that's really kind of stood
- 28:07Speaker 3: out to you as like a great storyline.
- 28:10Speaker 5: So yeah, I mean last night, I just you know,
- 28:13Speaker 5: Dallas had no chance to win that game. They're just
- 28:15Speaker 5: they're just not They're not winning that game. And McKinnon
- 28:17Speaker 5: scores thirty seconds into the third. You know, PK and
- 28:20Speaker 5: I get into it, and the intermission going into the
- 28:22Speaker 5: thirdies like Dallas have been the better team, Like, they
- 28:25Speaker 5: just went ten minutes without a shot, How could they
- 28:27Speaker 5: be the better team? They have ten shots through forty
- 28:30Speaker 5: minutes and a lot of time, a lot of hockey
- 28:33Speaker 5: left that we all joke about that, right, it's only
- 28:34Speaker 5: twenty minutes and at that point they're only down one nothing,
- 28:37Speaker 5: and now it's down two nothing and there's a penalty.
- 28:41Speaker 5: You know, for Colorado, it felt like them they might
- 28:44Speaker 5: have three minors the Abs last night, two on fourth liners,
- 28:49Speaker 5: one on their six defensemen, like some odd players who
- 28:52Speaker 5: don't see a lot of ice. We're taking penalties last night,
- 28:55Speaker 5: and I couldn't object the call we watched on replays.
- 28:58Speaker 5: Those were good calls. Those were real penalties, and that
- 29:01Speaker 5: sort of turned it. And then all of a sudden
- 29:02Speaker 5: they get the puck luck right, it goes off the
- 29:04Speaker 5: skate of Girard and goes into the net, the same
- 29:07Speaker 5: things that but happened to the Blackwell and the Stars
- 29:09Speaker 5: going off of Dallas into their own net. Now it's
- 29:12Speaker 5: sort of flipped. But that's an all time, all time game.
- 29:16Speaker 5: And I got I got some heat post game because
- 29:20Speaker 5: people wanted to draw comparisons to Rantman's hat trick to
- 29:23Speaker 5: the messier hat trick, uh added with an empty net,
- 29:27Speaker 5: and I'm like, hey, one guy guaranteed it, the other
- 29:30Speaker 5: guy didn't. This is the first round, not the conference final.
- 29:34Speaker 5: Like everybody relaxed a little bit, okay, but it was.
- 29:37Speaker 5: It was an all time moment, certainly in Dallas Star's
- 29:40Speaker 5: hockey history. And I love that building. It's not Reunion Arena,
- 29:45Speaker 5: Jason Reunion arenas where they used to play. Okay, you're so,
- 29:49Speaker 5: I do.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Know that, but I listen. I love that building that Dallas.
- 29:54Speaker 3: When the fans stand up and you can't see really
- 29:57Speaker 3: really good, it's just an amazing atmosphere.
- 30:00Speaker 5: Loud. Yeah. I ask Adman about the old Stars Club
- 30:03Speaker 5: at Reunion a post.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Sure Mart took there. He said, you worked at Darryl
- 30:08Speaker 2: Ray too.
- 30:09Speaker 3: Do you have a great I mean that guy lives
- 30:11Speaker 3: with the Tasaurus in his back pocket or something, because
- 30:14Speaker 3: the ship he brings up is incredible.
- 30:16Speaker 5: He is, I mean, he might be the best local
- 30:21Speaker 5: analyst in the game. Like he is so good at
- 30:24Speaker 5: his job. And quite frankly, I loved Ralph with him.
- 30:29Speaker 5: This is back in the day. It's a long time ago.
- 30:32Speaker 5: I always thought they were the top and I've pushed with,
- 30:34Speaker 5: Like when the ESPN bosses asked me, you know, hey,
- 30:37Speaker 5: maybe we're looking for the guy. I'm like, let's call
- 30:40Speaker 5: Darrel Ray. You know. Now, maybe Razor doesn't want to
- 30:43Speaker 5: do it. You know, maybe he's got a cushy thing there.
- 30:45Speaker 5: He's beloved in Dallas. He's kind of a god there.
- 30:48Speaker 5: He's done play by play, he can host, he can
- 30:50Speaker 5: do it all. But for my money, he's among the
- 30:52Speaker 5: very best local analysts. And believe me, if he wanted
- 30:55Speaker 5: a network job, he'd have it. He's he's great and
- 30:57Speaker 5: everything because he can do he can do it all right.
- 30:59Speaker 5: He's got the sense of humor, he's got the fun,
- 31:02Speaker 5: He's obviously got the the great vocabulary. The goaltender is
- 31:07Speaker 5: a critical part I think of the analyst role, so
- 31:09Speaker 5: he obviously checks that box too. But but he can
- 31:12Speaker 5: do it all. And I love him personally. I think
- 31:14Speaker 5: he's hysterical to be around.
- 31:15Speaker 3: I still have a bone to pick with him because
- 31:17Speaker 3: he he It was a viral moment on Twitter where
- 31:21Speaker 3: you know, I was with the stars and and I
- 31:23Speaker 3: love him. I think he's great, but I was I
- 31:25Speaker 3: had my hand on Jamie Benn and then just during
- 31:27Speaker 3: the broadcast, he just goes, what's Jason de Murz gonna
- 31:30Speaker 3: do to Jamie Benn And then everybody posted it.
- 31:32Speaker 2: And I was like, Daryl, come on, man, like give
- 31:34Speaker 2: me a break.
- 31:34Speaker 3: But you know, going in that, did you ever have
- 31:37Speaker 3: a moment when you were calling games like where guys
- 31:39Speaker 3: would come up to you when they saw you were
- 31:41Speaker 3: you maybe had to toe the line to not chirp
- 31:43Speaker 3: guys and kind of adjust to that situation because it
- 31:47Speaker 3: happens a lot. And I mean you have to be
- 31:48Speaker 3: honest as well. You can't just sugarcoat it because fans
- 31:52Speaker 3: are smart.
- 31:53Speaker 5: Absolutely, you have to be accountable. I get I get
- 31:56Speaker 5: this all the time because I've been lucky enough and
- 31:58Speaker 5: I'm one of the few guys who can do studio
- 32:00Speaker 5: and remote. And when I say do it, I don't
- 32:02Speaker 5: mean the ability. I mean bosses allow me to do both.
- 32:06Speaker 5: And so I think it's really important. And I've said
- 32:08Speaker 5: this my entire career, Like it's really easy to sit
- 32:11Speaker 5: behind the Sports center desk in Bristol, Connecticut and be
- 32:14Speaker 5: all clever and cute and fun and make fun of athletes.
- 32:17Speaker 5: Look at this guy, he can't make that play. What's
- 32:19Speaker 5: he doing? What was he doing last night? You know,
- 32:21Speaker 5: that kind of thing in all the sports, and then
- 32:24Speaker 5: it's a different story to have to be in the
- 32:25Speaker 5: dressing room there. You know, again in all the sports,
- 32:28Speaker 5: go out to training camps, either there's NFL guys and
- 32:31Speaker 5: have the hockey guys walk up to you. So you know,
- 32:34Speaker 5: we do run that fine line. Look in the studio,
- 32:36Speaker 5: we're trying to entertain and inform. You know, we're look,
- 32:40Speaker 5: we're trying to have a good time. It's a lot
- 32:41Speaker 5: of laughs and at some point, you know, we're taking
- 32:43Speaker 5: some shots. My rule of thumb's always been if a player,
- 32:47Speaker 5: I think would admit to making a mistake himself, then
- 32:50Speaker 5: it's okay for me to say it was a mistake,
- 32:53Speaker 5: but it was a gray area. I wouldn't go there.
- 32:55Speaker 5: So I try to sort of stick to that. But
- 32:58Speaker 5: I make it a point now when I'm on the
- 32:59Speaker 5: road to go see the coaches and players, I'm right
- 33:01Speaker 5: there in the hallway if anyone wants to say something
- 33:04Speaker 5: to be now. Sometimes they come up to me, they
- 33:06Speaker 5: talking about PK and mess I'm like, whoa way, that's
- 33:08Speaker 5: that's their business. I'm just sorry about leaves right here.
- 33:11Speaker 5: You got the issues. The leaves. I'm right here in front.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Of you, all right, so bag of leaves, not sending messages.
- 33:16Speaker 1: A couple more from me. Let's talk a little movies.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Of course, along with a brilliant career at ESPN, you
- 33:19Speaker 1: have been a successful actor and still getting residuals and
- 33:22Speaker 1: royalties for such films. A million dollar arm of John Hammond,
- 33:25Speaker 1: of course. The Fairly Brothers hooking up in favorite Pitch.
- 33:27Speaker 1: You've told me the story, Bobby Fairly, pretty good goalie.
- 33:30Speaker 1: How did you get the flies?
- 33:32Speaker 5: Yeah? So the Fairlies happened. I've been in quite a few.
- 33:37Speaker 5: It's hard to remember all of them. And then you know,
- 33:40Speaker 5: John ham won't stop calling me. I'm gonna put him
- 33:43Speaker 5: on blast, Okay, I'm serious. When the Blues play, he
- 33:46Speaker 5: texts me, not like once, like I mean like six
- 33:49Speaker 5: or seven times during the game, my hammer time. I'm
- 33:53Speaker 5: trying to watch the game over here. Okay. But he's real,
- 33:56Speaker 5: he's he's hard and all the Fairly Brothers. I was
- 34:00Speaker 5: in the Boston area and I was I was dating
- 34:03Speaker 5: a girl at time again all the time, and she
- 34:06Speaker 5: was sort of a part time actress. And then got
- 34:08Speaker 5: had a couple of roles in uh, oh you love
- 34:12Speaker 5: What was the first big hit for the Fairlies.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Uh she was in something about Mary, Yeah, pink Pin, which.
- 34:19Speaker 5: Was what was with the weight the weight issue shallow
- 34:26Speaker 5: that's the one, okay, yeah it was. So she had
- 34:28Speaker 5: a relationship with the Faarilies and must have introduced me
- 34:31Speaker 5: at some point to them and they were like, you know,
- 34:34Speaker 5: and I joked, so, hey, you got anything is sports canister,
- 34:37Speaker 5: I'm your guy. I'm in the neighborhood, that kind of thing.
- 34:40Speaker 5: And that's how fever Pitch happened. And they put me
- 34:42Speaker 5: in a few other things, and then I got friendly
- 34:44Speaker 5: with the Rock. I bumped into the Rock a couple
- 34:46Speaker 5: of places, the game Plan, tooth Fairy, don't sleep on
- 34:49Speaker 5: a tooth fairy, ad Man sneaky right. What's the other one?
- 34:56Speaker 5: Special Olympics.
- 34:57Speaker 2: You're a lad, I think the most.
- 35:02Speaker 5: I'm in that way too much. I mean, that's that's
- 35:04Speaker 5: how you know about the movie. I am in the
- 35:05Speaker 5: Ringer way too much. I feel for sure some of
- 35:08Speaker 5: those scenes would be cut out. I get that one
- 35:10Speaker 5: all the time. People come up like a cult following
- 35:12Speaker 5: for that. Again, I'm not there for my acting ability.
- 35:16Speaker 5: I asked for a sex scene in one of these,
- 35:18Speaker 5: you know, a cop chase. I promised my mom, no nudity,
- 35:22Speaker 5: but I could take my top off if that would
- 35:24Speaker 5: work for somebody. Can I have a gun like Adam
- 35:28Speaker 5: Sandler at least gives Dan Patrick other than he's Dan Patrick.
- 35:32Speaker 5: You know, I always play sportscaster X or whatever.
- 35:36Speaker 2: So I had a couple of really quick ones. But
- 35:40Speaker 2: one thing I had to ask you about.
- 35:42Speaker 4: We talked about the sort of the the Heyday that
- 35:45Speaker 4: you I mean, You've been a part of so many
- 35:46Speaker 4: great eras of ESPN, but for me that this is
- 35:49Speaker 4: Sports Center ads through the years are just so incredible,
- 35:54Speaker 4: so iconic, and you, of course star and a great
- 35:57Speaker 4: one with a younger Alexandra Ovechkin where he kind of
- 36:02Speaker 4: plays a Russian spy. So I can't speak to how
- 36:05Speaker 4: well the ad has aged over the years, but it's
- 36:08Speaker 4: a classic. I'm sure you get asked about it frequently.
- 36:10Speaker 4: I'd love to hear any stories about being on the
- 36:13Speaker 4: set with Ov and Semyon Varlamov of course.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Yeah, make that ad.
- 36:18Speaker 5: So that's been uh, that's gotten controversial by the way, Yeah,
- 36:21Speaker 5: because of what you mentioned. Yeah, what's going on in
- 36:23Speaker 5: the real world and We did run it back a
- 36:27Speaker 5: few times recently, you know, after he went for the chase,
- 36:29Speaker 5: going for the chase and gets the goal. So the
- 36:31Speaker 5: two quick stories about that and man, were you on campus?
- 36:34Speaker 5: Would you have been on campus that day?
- 36:35Speaker 2: Now, well, the day I did see avetch in the
- 36:37Speaker 2: one day. Yeah.
- 36:38Speaker 5: So they wound up building the set on our basketball court.
- 36:42Speaker 5: It looks like it's a copy room right with the
- 36:45Speaker 5: copy machine and files and stuff like that. But because
- 36:50Speaker 5: of the goof of having to have him go through
- 36:52Speaker 5: the roof the ceiling there, they couldn't do it in
- 36:55Speaker 5: a real building. They had to set make a set
- 36:57Speaker 5: outside and rig the contraption there. And because of the
- 37:02Speaker 5: contraption and building a set out side on the basketball court,
- 37:06Speaker 5: I was told it was the most expensive This is
- 37:08Speaker 5: Sports Center promo ever made because of all those things
- 37:11Speaker 5: and the other really cool thing and this will not
- 37:13Speaker 5: surprise anyone. We had a stunt double for Ovi. We
- 37:17Speaker 5: had a real stunt double, full Uni pad, same height, weight,
- 37:22Speaker 5: with color hair at the time, all that stuff standing
- 37:26Speaker 5: right there, and OVI refused to let him in, ob
- 37:30Speaker 5: I do my own stunts. He's Tom Cruise. He figured
- 37:32Speaker 5: that out, you know that kind of thing. So those
- 37:35Speaker 5: were the two really cool parts about that commercial. And
- 37:38Speaker 5: and people still come up randomly, like I got a
- 37:40Speaker 5: text from Neil Everett out of the Blue Gian Perderson
- 37:44Speaker 5: and the only line is late night filings. You know,
- 37:47Speaker 5: like it because that's what he says. He adds the
- 37:49Speaker 5: s for some reason, you know, like it's just it was.
- 37:52Speaker 5: It was a classic. Those are fun to be in.
- 37:55Speaker 5: Guys anchors like myself, not like myself. Other anchors would
- 37:59Speaker 5: jump over themselves to get in the building when they
- 38:02Speaker 5: knew they were filming. Eyes would come back from vacations early.
- 38:08Speaker 5: I don't care there was their day off. They don't care.
- 38:10Speaker 5: They're coming to work because they wanted to be in
- 38:12Speaker 5: these things. It was such a big deal. And the
- 38:15Speaker 5: last one I'll tell you about this the athletes did
- 38:17Speaker 5: not get paid. Ladanian Tomlinson through flew coast to coast
- 38:24Speaker 5: on his own dime because he wanted to be in one.
- 38:28Speaker 5: And that would be really cool. With the mailbox, you
- 38:30Speaker 5: gotta talk about the story about.
- 38:31Speaker 2: This one hit it.
- 38:32Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a goof with Ladanian Tomlinson. Is we're in
- 38:35Speaker 5: the mail room and he wears the shaded shield the
- 38:39Speaker 5: visor in his helmet, okay. So he's putting the mail
- 38:43Speaker 5: in all the wrong places and all the wrong slots.
- 38:45Speaker 5: So I'm like, hey, lt, you know, what are you doing.
- 38:48Speaker 5: That's not for me, that's not me, that's not me,
- 38:49Speaker 5: and that's oh he's sorry. And they keeps putting it
- 38:52Speaker 5: in the wrong thing. So that's how it ends. But
- 38:54Speaker 5: his PR person is right there, as they often are,
- 38:58Speaker 5: and the PR person's a young person, I guess, and
- 39:01Speaker 5: they don't really get the goof, and they're pleading with
- 39:04Speaker 5: director and the producer he can we do one with
- 39:06Speaker 5: his helmet off? Okay, And everybody's like, well, then he's
- 39:11Speaker 5: just an idiot. Why would he be putting the mayor
- 39:14Speaker 5: the whole goof is because it's the shaded shield right
- 39:17Speaker 5: that he can't see if he has no helmet on,
- 39:20Speaker 5: Why would he be putting it in the wrong Then
- 39:22Speaker 5: he's just an idiot. And so the producer, to try
- 39:25Speaker 5: to please this PR person does a whole other spot,
- 39:31Speaker 5: you know, just at that second. It's not funny. It
- 39:34Speaker 5: never aired. I'll be surprised if it was even filming
- 39:36Speaker 5: the camera at the time, just to sort of appease
- 39:39Speaker 5: that PR flack at that moment. But those who are
- 39:42Speaker 5: blast to do and again same deal, I'm not funny.
- 39:45Speaker 5: Like they gave us the words to say everything is
- 39:49Speaker 5: everything is less right because sports said today big bag
- 39:52Speaker 5: poo want to play, Oh my god, and everything is
- 39:54Speaker 5: taken down and understated and less words and less and
- 39:58Speaker 5: that was the genius behind Widen and Kennedy. That was
- 40:00Speaker 5: the firm.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Shout up to Neil Ebrett.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Obviously you know how much I left bet Or he
- 40:04Speaker 1: was in that commercial with Neil, which is one of
- 40:05Speaker 1: the all time.
- 40:06Speaker 5: Yes, I'm in the top ten, right, I'm in the.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Top all right.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Last day with Steve, theyve been a personal note. We
- 40:12Speaker 1: did one Watch Game seven.
- 40:16Speaker 2: It's fun. You're in the game on it right now,
- 40:17Speaker 2: get a live stream.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Mode, do one Sports Center together. Clearly was well of
- 40:20Speaker 1: the highlights of your career.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Along with me.
- 40:22Speaker 1: As we're walking outside afterwards and I said, leave's any
- 40:24Speaker 1: advice for me and he said, no, you're a professional anchor.
- 40:26Speaker 1: I said, come on, you gonna have something you go. Okay,
- 40:28Speaker 1: I'll give you two things. One you said when you
- 40:30Speaker 1: toss in the sound he said, most guys just.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Go what's the role?
- 40:33Speaker 1: You meaning, what's the first thing Jason Demurr says, hey,
- 40:35Speaker 1: we gotta get the fucking deep. Here's Jason Demurr speaking
- 40:37Speaker 1: about the importance of controlling the puck. He is, I
- 40:39Speaker 1: listened to the whole sound bite because he goes there
- 40:40Speaker 1: might be something more interesting later the bite.
- 40:42Speaker 2: So you say, hey, demurs.
- 40:43Speaker 1: For this, but also did this, and I go, that's
- 40:45Speaker 1: just a slight attention detail. I don't know any other
- 40:47Speaker 1: ankle that actually did that, So I appreciate that advice.
- 40:49Speaker 1: And another one you said, don't make fun of names.
- 40:52Speaker 1: He said, it's an easy one, a quick joke. And
- 40:54Speaker 1: every time I see asker Off the goalie, I want
- 40:56Speaker 1: to say, kiss my asker off.
- 40:57Speaker 2: And your point was you don't know what a name
- 41:00Speaker 2: means to someone, and you go specific for yourself.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Adnan Urk is not a common name, and I'm made
- 41:04Speaker 1: for me to add me on the bad of it.
- 41:05Speaker 1: I don't know what that means for your culture in
- 41:07Speaker 1: your background. So pretty good advice for your leaves.
- 41:09Speaker 5: So ay, I don't remember doing your show with you
- 41:11Speaker 5: at all, quite frankly, and then I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 41:14Speaker 5: have the schedule or fired. Okay uh And that came
- 41:19Speaker 5: from my dad. My dad is in the other room
- 41:21Speaker 5: right now, and I'll tell him you brought that up.
- 41:23Speaker 5: He said it to me. He told me, Uh, you know,
- 41:26Speaker 5: guys have nicknames, and you never know what a nickname.
- 41:30Speaker 5: It came from their grandmother who's no longer with us,
- 41:33Speaker 5: and she meant the world to him. It's just it's
- 41:35Speaker 5: not worth it, right, Whatever you say is not gonna
- 41:38Speaker 5: be funny enough to overcome the potential hurt or pain.
- 41:42Speaker 5: And so I just stayed away from the name's first name,
- 41:45Speaker 5: last names. I can't I can't believe I told you that.
- 41:47Speaker 5: I can't believe you remember it. And that's but I
- 41:50Speaker 5: know it's very true. Those are two good things. And
- 41:52Speaker 5: I love the throat of the sound bite. I live
- 41:55Speaker 5: for that stuff. That's such an important piece to me
- 41:58Speaker 5: to this day. I still do it. I want to
- 41:59Speaker 5: hear the whole bite, and I want to find a
- 42:02Speaker 5: way to the smoothest throat to to make people stick.
- 42:05Speaker 5: Let's do it because de Mayor's is gonna go for forty
- 42:07Speaker 5: five seconds in a sound bite, and his last five
- 42:10Speaker 5: seconds might be the best.
- 42:12Speaker 2: That might be the only good thing there.
- 42:14Speaker 5: So gott to keep it around the whole time.
- 42:17Speaker 1: Love it man, Steve Leeby, I tell you one of
- 42:18Speaker 1: the best things about Leaves is his humility.
- 42:20Speaker 2: You've heard him say a couple of times this interview.
- 42:22Speaker 2: I'm not the funny thing. I'm not this.
- 42:23Speaker 1: And one time you said to me, I've made a
- 42:24Speaker 1: career of being the second band. I said, what are
- 42:25Speaker 1: you talking about? He said, no one ever watched it
- 42:27Speaker 1: for me, either watching it for Stuart Scott or Scott
- 42:29Speaker 1: van Pelt or Neil Evert. And I'm just the other guy.
- 42:32Speaker 1: But you know how I feel. Nobody thinks of you
- 42:34Speaker 1: as just another guy. You are a great guy, and
- 42:35Speaker 1: you're a tremendous at your job and have been a
- 42:37Speaker 1: great friend to me and obviously just love watching every
- 42:39Speaker 1: time talking to hockey talk whatever it may be.
- 42:41Speaker 2: So thanks so much, Leeves. Appreciate you man, very kind.
- 42:43Speaker 5: I hope to see you guys a stay in the
- 42:44Speaker 5: Cup final or someplace soon.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, I didn't know I Nan could be that sweet.
- 42:48Speaker 2: So that was beautiful.
- 42:50Speaker 5: You should hear what he tells me about you, man,
- 42:51Speaker 5: It's not the same.
- 42:54Speaker 2: It's oh junker. So more hockey talk here in just
- 43:07Speaker 2: a second.
- 43:07Speaker 1: At once again thanks to Steve Levy but Little Cinephi
- 43:10Speaker 1: in sixty more theater for you your boy hitting broad
- 43:12Speaker 1: Away again, this time for the star power of George
- 43:14Speaker 1: Clooney and good Night and good Luck.
- 43:16Speaker 2: I love the film when it came out. When asked
- 43:18Speaker 2: on a podcast.
- 43:18Speaker 1: By Scott Finberg for what's the favorite way of his
- 43:21Speaker 1: own career this is two years ago, Clooney said, oh,
- 43:23Speaker 1: it's gonna be a good Night and good Luck. His dad,
- 43:25Speaker 1: Nick Clooney, was a broadcast for years in Los Angeles.
- 43:28Speaker 1: Cloney grew up in Cincinnati slash Kentucky that areas. Had
- 43:30Speaker 1: always dreamed of being a broadcaster and it didn't work out,
- 43:32Speaker 1: became an actor.
- 43:33Speaker 2: It seems I have worked out well for George, but.
- 43:34Speaker 1: Wanted to make a movie called good Night and good Luck,
- 43:36Speaker 1: which is all about Edward ar Morrill, the fame broadcaster
- 43:38Speaker 1: who took on McCarthyism back in the day. The play
- 43:41Speaker 1: and the movie both very relevant today, the whole assault
- 43:44Speaker 1: on journalism, what's real, what's not, vast, etc.
- 43:46Speaker 2: But I'll tell you JD.
- 43:47Speaker 1: As a play, I thought it was phenomenal because of
- 43:49Speaker 1: and Jill would appreciate this. The depth of the set.
- 43:52Speaker 1: It's two levels, so up top you have the jazz band.
- 43:55Speaker 1: They have these jazz interludes, jazzing they're playing. And on
- 43:58Speaker 1: the bottom you have the TV studio, which you and
- 44:00Speaker 1: I are f well familiar with, So you have these
- 44:01Speaker 1: gigantic cameras as if back in the fifties and sixties
- 44:04Speaker 1: and Edward Armour was broadcasting and the move.
- 44:07Speaker 2: The play was nominated in fact for the Best Set Decoration.
- 44:09Speaker 1: They're up for Best Lighting for the Tony Awards, and
- 44:11Speaker 1: of course Cloney is up for Best Actor. And in
- 44:13Speaker 1: the original movie played Fred Friendley, who's the producer. David
- 44:16Speaker 1: stretheraorn who's incredible actor, played Edward Armour. To be honest,
- 44:18Speaker 1: think Edward Murrow, Stretharon Nail that Cloney couldn't do it
- 44:21Speaker 1: any better. But what's been getting a lot of notoriety
- 44:23Speaker 1: along with George's Tony Wward nominated performance is the fact
- 44:26Speaker 1: he died his hair. And because George is so charming,
- 44:28Speaker 1: he's been making fun of it, saying, you know, people
- 44:30Speaker 1: are making fun of me.
- 44:31Speaker 2: You know, my wife's good. It's a bad look. Listen,
- 44:33Speaker 2: tell this is why George Coloney is George Clooney. Because
- 44:35Speaker 2: he's sixty three. It looks like he's fifty.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Three, He's so smart, his aeradite, he's charming, his handswer
- 44:40Speaker 1: and he can still be self deprecating. How can George
- 44:42Speaker 1: Clooney pull this up? I still think he looks like
- 44:44Speaker 1: a million bucks. And I gotta tell you the play
- 44:46Speaker 1: was fantastic.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Tal go ahead, he looks phenomenal.
- 44:50Speaker 4: He played in a recent I'm sure I'm gonna get
- 44:53Speaker 4: some of the details wrong, but there is video of
- 44:55Speaker 4: him playing in some sort of like Actors Equity softball game.
- 44:58Speaker 2: I just was gonna say that. I just was gonna
- 45:01Speaker 2: say that.
- 45:03Speaker 4: This guy is one of the biggest stars in the
- 45:04Speaker 4: world and he's still playing like a union guy. Basically,
- 45:08Speaker 4: he's playing softball with the boys, you know, during an
- 45:11Speaker 4: off day from from the This like one of the
- 45:14Speaker 4: biggest shows on Broadway. It's pretty impressive. I'm a huge
- 45:16Speaker 4: Clooney fan, Yeah, big Clooney head. The fact that he's
- 45:19Speaker 4: been so deprecating about the die job is it just
- 45:23Speaker 4: makes me love him even more. He had an interview
- 45:25Speaker 4: he may have been with CBS News where they brought
- 45:27Speaker 4: up they brought up his hair, his die job, and
- 45:31Speaker 4: the reporter said something like, oh, it's not that bad.
- 45:33Speaker 2: And he immediates like, no, no, it's bad, It's okay.
- 45:36Speaker 2: What he laughed?
- 45:36Speaker 1: He said normally in New York, he goes, I wear
- 45:38Speaker 1: a happy people still know it's me. This diesis be
- 45:40Speaker 1: unblieable because nobody knows it's me. I'm walking around New
- 45:43Speaker 1: York City. That's how bad this touch up is. All right,
- 45:45Speaker 1: let's get back the second round previews and dive into
- 45:47Speaker 1: the Vegas gold Knights taking on the Edmonton Oilers. All
- 45:50Speaker 1: of us pretty much fell at Grere picking the Kings
- 45:52Speaker 1: on home ices. They couldn't possibly lose to Edmonton four
- 45:54Speaker 1: straight years in a row, but well they did. Edmondon's
- 45:56Speaker 1: won the last two games between these two teams, including
- 45:59Speaker 1: with Vegas. Vegas elimited Edmonton in six games the second
- 46:02Speaker 1: round two years ago, Golden Knights won the whole thing.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Connor mcdavi in the first round eleven points in six games.
- 46:08Speaker 1: He's one point behind Ranson in most points in the
- 46:10Speaker 1: plast Vegas pretty balanced offense, and there's six game dance
- 46:13Speaker 1: in Minnesota. Five points for Hurdle and Ikele, four points
- 46:16Speaker 1: for Stone in Theodore. I see ikle by left for
- 46:18Speaker 1: the lady bing nice Vegas and the Oilers. I will
- 46:21Speaker 1: say Vegas in six, but I don't feel great about
- 46:24Speaker 1: because I picked against the Oilers and I'm loaded to
- 46:25Speaker 1: do it again.
- 46:26Speaker 2: But I like Vegas's balance a little more.
- 46:29Speaker 3: Yeah, and then you know what, did we hear Mitia
- 46:32Speaker 3: Satcomb's not gonna be ready for round two? So you know,
- 46:35Speaker 3: I can't go with that, Mintonnage, I can't. I personally think, listen,
- 46:40Speaker 3: they it's amazing resiliency for them to win. And that's
- 46:42Speaker 3: my word of the day. I've said about nine thousand
- 46:44Speaker 3: times in this podcast today.
- 46:46Speaker 2: But then bullish word of the day.
- 46:48Speaker 3: You said bullish, Yeah, bullish, resilient, Yeah, yeah, yeah, very
- 46:52Speaker 3: it's like emphatic for you, resounding, resounding was resounding and emphatic.
- 46:57Speaker 5: Uh.
- 46:58Speaker 3: But yeah, I just think it was more LA blowing
- 47:02Speaker 3: that and bad coaching decisions than Edmonton winning it. I
- 47:06Speaker 3: feel like LA just shot themselves in a foot when
- 47:09Speaker 3: they had it.
- 47:10Speaker 2: I don't think Vegas will do that.
- 47:12Speaker 3: And I think, listen, Calvin Pickard, we're gonna have them
- 47:16Speaker 3: on the show eventually. I love them, but you know
- 47:19Speaker 3: they're eventually going to lose a game in this series.
- 47:22Speaker 2: And do they stay with him?
- 47:23Speaker 3: The whole playoffs or do they go back to Stuart
- 47:25Speaker 3: Skinner and how is Stuart Skinner? And they kind of
- 47:27Speaker 3: do what they did last season and bounced around. But
- 47:29Speaker 3: I just think Vegas their top guys. They beat Minnesota
- 47:33Speaker 3: in six, and their top guys did not play good
- 47:36Speaker 3: until like the last game or so, so I think
- 47:38Speaker 3: they're kind of cresting, and you know, I just go
- 47:42Speaker 3: back to kind of history repeats itself, and I think
- 47:44Speaker 3: in a seven game series, I think Vegas overall will
- 47:47Speaker 3: play more solid, better games. And you know, you obviously
- 47:52Speaker 3: it's hard to bet against Leon and Connor because they're
- 47:55Speaker 3: just absolutely electric. And I do love what Evander Kaines
- 48:00Speaker 3: brought to this team, but I just can't with no
- 48:01Speaker 3: Matias Ekoma once again have to go against the Edmonton Oilers,
- 48:06Speaker 3: and if they win this round then I'll probably take
- 48:08Speaker 3: them to win the Cup. But yeah, I gotta bounce
- 48:11Speaker 3: back and go Vegas, and I'm god, I'm sweating it
- 48:14Speaker 3: too right now, But.
- 48:16Speaker 1: I like that logic. You'll go against the Oilers twice,
- 48:18Speaker 1: but you want to it a third time.
- 48:19Speaker 3: If indeed, let's check to you fool me twice, you're
- 48:23Speaker 3: not gonna fool me again.
- 48:26Speaker 1: The series of the second round. I cannot wait for
- 48:28Speaker 1: Panthers Leaves. This is gonna be awesome.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Florida to really oh. I think it's gonna be fantastic.
- 48:32Speaker 2: I think it's gonna be I think it's gonna be
- 48:34Speaker 2: like you think Florid's gonna push him around.
- 48:35Speaker 3: I think it's gonna be like hot knife through a
- 48:37Speaker 3: butt through warm butt.
- 48:39Speaker 2: Ha.
- 48:40Speaker 1: Florida took three or four from Toronto and the season
- 48:42Speaker 1: series split their last two things, which they played in
- 48:44Speaker 1: the final two weeks the regular season. Panthers knocked out
- 48:47Speaker 1: the Leaves in five games. In the second round. Two
- 48:49Speaker 1: years ago, Florida made it all the way to the
- 48:50Speaker 1: Cup Final. They lost to Vegas. Leaf fans were hurt,
- 48:53Speaker 1: chanting we want Florida during their first round series against Otto.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Would be careful you wish for Florida scored nineteen goals
- 48:59Speaker 1: in five games against Tampa. Ryd hurt, Chuck Bennett Barkoff,
- 49:03Speaker 1: Brad Marsham buzzing, and for Toronto, they need to win
- 49:06Speaker 1: this series otherwise we know what's.
- 49:08Speaker 2: At if they can look at themselves. J D and
- 49:09Speaker 2: go hey.
- 49:10Speaker 1: We went final four Eastern Conference Finals been a while
- 49:12Speaker 1: there for the Leafs.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Marty and Taveras both unrestricted free agents.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Matthew Downs, You've spoken about how good he's been so
- 49:18Speaker 1: far restricted free agent. I just think Toronto played such
- 49:21Speaker 1: a strong game against Ottawa, particularly win of those two
- 49:24Speaker 1: overtime games. Propably look good early on, and they're able
- 49:26Speaker 1: to study the ship after looking vulnerable that I do
- 49:28Speaker 1: think they'll get Florida test. I like the Panthers and six,
- 49:31Speaker 1: but I think it'll be hard fought. Why are you
- 49:33Speaker 1: more skeptical?
- 49:35Speaker 3: I mean, other than I'm very excited to see Anthony
- 49:38Speaker 3: Stolar's versus Babrovski.
- 49:40Speaker 2: Nice. You know, the student against the mentor and the teacher.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, take yeah there. You know.
- 49:46Speaker 3: I think it'll help. They have a couple of the
- 49:48Speaker 3: ex Panthers guys, you know, Eckman, Larson, Lorenz kind of
- 49:52Speaker 3: helped them get ready. But I just don't think they're
- 49:54Speaker 3: physical enough. I think Florida is going to kind of
- 49:58Speaker 3: bully him around. We saw what Florida can do against
- 50:01Speaker 3: the Tampa Bay team that a lot of us had,
- 50:03Speaker 3: I know, didn't add an end. A lot of us
- 50:05Speaker 3: had to win the Cup in this Tampa Bay team
- 50:08Speaker 3: that was very good down the stretch. They handled them
- 50:11Speaker 3: like it was nothing. I and listen, I wasn't bullish
- 50:15Speaker 3: on the series Toronto had. I think, out of that
- 50:19Speaker 3: whole series, I think Toronto outplayed Ottawa on maybe one game,
- 50:23Speaker 3: and I thought overall, Ottawa was a little bit faster, better,
- 50:27Speaker 3: quicker to pucks. And you know, I don't think Florida's
- 50:32Speaker 3: gonna give him that many chances as Ottawa did to
- 50:34Speaker 3: kind of get back. And Bobrovsky looks unbelievable, that decor
- 50:39Speaker 3: looks great. You know, ek Blad's going to be back again.
- 50:42Speaker 3: I know he was. He was out because that hit
- 50:44Speaker 3: on Hegel, but he's gonna come back after Game one
- 50:47Speaker 3: and they've proven they can play without him. And up front,
- 50:50Speaker 3: Sam Bennett looks looks incredible. Brad Marshan is playing like
- 50:54Speaker 3: the Brad Marshan that's won a Cup and and that's
- 50:58Speaker 3: been just dominant for so many years. He looks rejuvenated.
- 51:01Speaker 3: And I just don't think they have enough answer. And
- 51:05Speaker 3: I just don't know if that core four can handle
- 51:09Speaker 3: the physicality that's gonna come their way. And I just
- 51:13Speaker 3: think it's gonna be Florida and five.
- 51:15Speaker 1: I love it, love the aggressive prediction. It'll be the
- 51:17Speaker 1: worst series of the second in terms of games played.
- 51:20Speaker 1: Taal which series are mostly going forward to Stars Jets,
- 51:23Speaker 1: Kane's Caps Oilers, Golden Knights or Panthers leaves.
- 51:27Speaker 4: I think I I think JD said it before. I
- 51:29Speaker 4: think the winner of Stars Jets is the favorite to
- 51:31Speaker 4: win the Cup. After that, I think both those if
- 51:33Speaker 4: they're if they're both healthy, assuming they're both healthy coming
- 51:36Speaker 4: out of that series. The idea that Dallas just went
- 51:39Speaker 4: through that ridiculous series. Nico Rannon looked like Mario out there,
- 51:44Speaker 4: and they're getting heiskin In and Robertson back for game
- 51:48Speaker 4: one of the next series.
- 51:50Speaker 2: Think of that. I mean, that's the worst two one
- 51:52Speaker 2: I'll be watching.
- 51:52Speaker 4: That's the one I'll be watching. I think there's there's
- 51:54Speaker 4: so much talent Ottinger versus Hellibook. I mean, hey, Helly
- 51:58Speaker 4: needs to show up and show out in these playoffs.
- 52:01Speaker 4: I mean, it's if it's not happening now in this series.
- 52:06Speaker 2: I don't know when it's happening.
- 52:07Speaker 4: I think there's so many fascinating narratives, so much talent.
- 52:12Speaker 2: That's the series.
- 52:13Speaker 4: And maybe it's because those two teams just played, so
- 52:16Speaker 4: we're still fresh in our minds. There's a little recency
- 52:18Speaker 4: bias there, but that's the series I'll be watching for show.
- 52:22Speaker 4: But I thought Florida was the most impressive team in
- 52:24Speaker 4: the first round to go to take on a team
- 52:27Speaker 4: like Tampa that a lot of people were taking them
- 52:29Speaker 4: as a potential Cup front runner coming in that series,
- 52:33Speaker 4: and they just wiped the floor with them. Really, I
- 52:35Speaker 4: mean they really, they really took it to them in
- 52:38Speaker 4: that series. And I wouldn't say they made it look easy,
- 52:41Speaker 4: but they beat a really really good team.
- 52:44Speaker 2: They beat them good.
- 52:45Speaker 3: Oh you can say it that they made it look
- 52:47Speaker 3: about as easy as you could make a series look
- 52:50Speaker 3: for like two Juggernauts and yeah, it's I just it's
- 52:56Speaker 3: gonna be. And again nothing on Toronto. And you know, here,
- 52:59Speaker 3: I am sounded like an idiot because we just did
- 53:00Speaker 3: all our predictions at and then I picked every Canadian
- 53:03Speaker 3: team to lose this round.
- 53:07Speaker 2: But I know what you're doing. It's like the reverse curse.
- 53:08Speaker 2: You're like lou Holts, like chance, I want.
- 53:12Speaker 3: I want a Canadian team to win so bad and
- 53:14Speaker 3: then just we'll go back to that initial one, say
- 53:17Speaker 3: this is the year but never take a Canadian team
- 53:20Speaker 3: to get to the finals, not one.
- 53:22Speaker 1: Which jd prediction came true the first one when he
- 53:24Speaker 1: said the Canadian to win the Cup.
- 53:26Speaker 2: I like it.
- 53:26Speaker 3: I'm at where, everywhere, where, everywhere, So then we can
- 53:29Speaker 3: just cherry pick.
- 53:30Speaker 1: All right, I'm gonna be called it on Sullivan. Do
- 53:31Speaker 1: you think Selly can turn the Rangers around?
- 53:35Speaker 2: Yeah? I think so.
- 53:35Speaker 3: I think he's got a you know, winning pedigree, and
- 53:38Speaker 3: you know, I always like to talk to people that
- 53:42Speaker 3: kind of around that organization, like you know, Brian Boyle
- 53:45Speaker 3: and Mike Rupp, and they're very both very high on
- 53:49Speaker 3: Mike Sullivan and what he could do for this team.
- 53:51Speaker 3: And I think the biggest thing is accountability. That is
- 53:55Speaker 3: what this team needs. That is what these top guys need.
- 53:58Speaker 3: They need accountability, folks. No, not the accountant with Ben
- 54:02Speaker 3: Stiller accountability.
- 54:04Speaker 2: No Bet Affleck, not Benn Stiller. But yeah, oh that
- 54:08Speaker 2: would be great tho. I'd love to see Benn Stiller
- 54:10Speaker 2: in that.
- 54:11Speaker 1: I can't believe they made a sequel to the account
- 54:13Speaker 1: Like it wasn't like that was a juggernaut of a movie.
- 54:15Speaker 2: Or particularly well received. I thank you all right, one
- 54:17Speaker 2: more for it. Matty Cash.
- 54:19Speaker 1: Congratulations coming back to Matt Coronado, Back to Calvary, seven
- 54:22Speaker 1: year extensionportably worth an average annual value of six point
- 54:25Speaker 1: five million dollars. He's twenty two years of age, breakout season,
- 54:28Speaker 1: twenty four goals, forty seven points in seventy seven games.
- 54:31Speaker 1: Mackenzie Wiger, by the way, referred to as Matty Cash
- 54:34Speaker 1: on social media. Freddie Anderson also got an extension signed
- 54:37Speaker 1: for one year and two point seven five million dollars.
- 54:38Speaker 1: Secures what happens there in around two But Coronado excellent
- 54:41Speaker 1: season there for Calvary, and I see they're building that
- 54:43Speaker 1: core with a good young player.
- 54:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought he you said it exactly hit nail
- 54:48Speaker 3: on the head break through season, and I think he's
- 54:51Speaker 3: a little water bug that's got a hell of a
- 54:53Speaker 3: shot when he utilizes it, and just a good power
- 54:55Speaker 3: play forward. So I think it's good. It's a good
- 54:59Speaker 3: contract at a good price, and CAP's going up. I
- 55:01Speaker 3: think it's going to look really good in five years
- 55:04Speaker 3: and you're gonna be really happy Calgary Flames fans, so.
- 55:07Speaker 1: And you'll be even happier NHL and scripted fans again
- 55:10Speaker 1: twice a week We're coming at you with all of
- 55:12Speaker 1: our opinions and flair.
- 55:13Speaker 2: And speaking of flair, JD play us out.
