Transcript
- 0:00I just passed 1:00. Miller and Condon, our number 2
- 0:03for us. We'll take you until, oh, just
- 0:05before 2:00. Trench plays of the day still to
- 0:07come. Bottom of the hour, Mad Rudy,
- 0:09longtime golf writer, Golf Digest.
- 0:13Most notably, he will join us to recap golf's first major and
- 0:16take a quick peek ahead to the PGA.
- 0:19Coming up here in about though just a little bit over a month,
- 0:21but lots of Iowa State news to get to Bill Seals.
- 0:24Listen to Jimmy Rodgers speak earlier this morning or into the
- 0:27afternoon and he joins us the latest on that Bill Trenton,
- 0:31Ken, thanks for coming on. Lots of things to get to with
- 0:33you. I guess we got to start with the
- 0:35ALS news. First of all, that the Toledo
- 0:38transfer, Braden Oz, who was by the sounds of things going to
- 0:42play a prominent role in that secondary for Iowa State, will
- 0:46not be this year as he's torn his ACL.
- 0:49Just a routine practice play apparently, and he's going to
- 0:51miss the year. That's not good news to start a
- 0:54Monday for Cyclone fans, Bill. No, it's not.
- 0:57And especially what you know what, it seems like the football
- 1:01program's gone through the last few years with injuries.
- 1:04And I I definitely agree. All's would have been one of
- 1:08those, one of those starters. I think he was probably one of
- 1:12the top, at least on the defensive side of the ball, one
- 1:15of the top additions in the portal that they even made.
- 1:18And then to lose him in in kind of just a freak type of way in
- 1:23the spring is. Yeah.
- 1:25I mean, it's it's Sun timely in Iowa State.
- 1:28You know, I think the the cover back there, I mean it's not bear
- 1:32by any means. They addressed it in the portal.
- 1:34They had a few guys coming back. But you know, I think it's going
- 1:39to be probably some young guys maybe that came with them from
- 1:42Washington State and and you know, it gets to be young back
- 1:46there all of a sudden with alls out of the mix.
- 1:49He did mention a couple of veterans that came in out of the
- 1:52portal. Micah Harper, who comes in from
- 1:54BYU, red shirt senior and also a guy that obviously he knows well
- 1:57with Deron Goodman. Both of those guys are those two
- 2:00guys that and it feels like everything's in pencil with this
- 2:03roster right now. Would you pencil though 2 red
- 2:06shirt seniors guys that you'd anticipate would be starters at
- 2:09this point? Well, I mean he handed at those
- 2:13guys. You know, Brody Miller was
- 2:15another one that he had talked about the Demarius Russell.
- 2:20So the two you you mentioned Trent and then those two are,
- 2:23are pretty much the top four of the guys at least new to the
- 2:27Iowa State program. He did throw in Drew Surges's
- 2:30name, though. And, and we all know about what
- 2:34you know, he has been able to do from walk on the scholarship
- 2:37player and a guy that the the new staff wanted to keep in the
- 2:41fold and not someone that they set out to replace.
- 2:45So I think between those five, I think they've got some good
- 2:49candidates and they've got, well, what about the last well
- 2:52half of spring football to to kind of start sorting that thing
- 2:56out. Speaking of sorting it out, it's
- 2:58kind of so difficult to sort this roster.
- 3:00We still know who these guys are, right?
- 3:02We just don't, we never seen them for the most part.
- 3:05What what stuck with me, it sounds to me like we may have
- 3:09and I want to get your take. Did you hear it the same way?
- 3:12A legitimate quarterback battle once we get into August?
- 3:17Well, and, and yeah, I mean it, it, it was, I mean, we expected
- 3:21to hear Rainer's name and when that question came up, but the
- 3:25fact that Moberly was omitted and they they mentioned Flores
- 3:30when I when we had open practice access last week, it it appeared
- 3:35to me that that it was kind of that it was Rainer and Moberly
- 3:39atop the depth chart, just kind of how they were going through
- 3:41some of the individual drills. But sounds like Flores is a is a
- 3:46guy that's come on here in the the last week or two.
- 3:50And I mean, I think he you know, he's a guy like we mentioned,
- 3:54like we talked about last week, Taj Manning on that different
- 3:58subject, basketball. But I mean, Zayn Flores that
- 4:01that program last season about toxic as they come.
- 4:05So you did just the way that thing spiraled.
- 4:08So I mean, yeah, his numbers were not good.
- 4:11But this is also a guy that's faced Big 12 defenses for, you
- 4:15know, the better part of a full season.
- 4:17Granted, it wasn't the right situation.
- 4:19Kind of like what it is with man in the on the basketball side of
- 4:23things. But and as a freshman, yeah,
- 4:26yeah. And as a freshman, a guy that,
- 4:29you know, he had an injury red shirt, he took a a traditional
- 4:33red shirt. So for a guy who's a red shirt
- 4:36sophomore, and I think this is his fourth year in college, so.
- 4:40So got the experience factor too.
- 4:42Yeah. He had redshirted as a freshman
- 4:45and then took a medical as well before starting most of last
- 4:50season. So he's not your not your
- 4:52typical red shirt sophomore. One of the things that caught my
- 4:55eye from the the press conference earlier today is
- 5:00Coach Rogers talked about the previous staff and talked about
- 5:02the fundamentals of the team and you can tell they were coached
- 5:05very well on that. I don't know.
- 5:06It just struck me. We don't hear that very often.
- 5:08It's very rare that you hear somebody and certainly in this
- 5:10kind of circumstance with the coaching staff leaving, it's not
- 5:13an heir apparent or something like that where they mentioned
- 5:16the old staff. Did that strike you as
- 5:17surprising at all? Give us a little take away from
- 5:19that. Not really.
- 5:21I think that every time that we've had Rogers since the
- 5:25initial press conference, it's it's mostly been very positive.
- 5:30It has been all positive about the old staff and and the guys
- 5:35that they were able to bring back how well coached they are
- 5:38and and how adaptable these guys have been.
- 5:41You know, it's a it's a brand new, more so brand new defense.
- 5:46I think there are some similarities offensively, but
- 5:49this is, I mean, it's brand new, everything on the defensive side
- 5:53of the ball. And they have praised that he
- 5:56did again today, that the guy is on that side of the ball and
- 5:59their ability to to make a total change in the middle of their
- 6:02college careers instead of looking elsewhere.
- 6:04So yeah, I mean it. It didn't surprise me.
- 6:07Well, and didn't, didn't Rogers at one point, I don't know,
- 6:10month at some point over the winter mention the fact that he
- 6:13was grateful to format Camel? Apparently they must have spent
- 6:16some, you know, some FaceTime, some Zoom time, or some, some
- 6:20phone time going over the roster.
- 6:22I, I think that Rogers actually went out of his way to, I guess
- 6:26publicly thank Matt Campbell for the, for the Intel that he left
- 6:31with the guys that stayed behind.
- 6:33Didn't that happen? Yeah, I think so.
- 6:35I think it, I think it did. And and they've been very
- 6:39cordial and you know, they, these guys that they, they never
- 6:42really have coached in the same place together.
- 6:45But there are members of Jimmy's staff who also know Matt very
- 6:49well and, and the coaches under Matt while they they were in
- 6:53Ames. And, and then you look at the
- 6:58past prospect camps, you know, Jimmy Rogers mentions a lot
- 7:01about being in AIMS over the summer for those prospect camps.
- 7:05And that was while Matt was the head coach and Jimmy was around
- 7:09the program a lot the last several years when he was at
- 7:12South Dakota State. So I think those two, Matt, Matt
- 7:16and Jimmy are, are very cordial. Man, what's the plan?
- 7:19That's TJ Otzelberger every year in the portal, but I don't know
- 7:22if it ever comes together this quickly. 5 for five as they have
- 7:26solidified the roster. It is April 13th and other
- 7:29programs are looking around saying what is TJ Otzelberger
- 7:32doing? You bet in this recruiting game
- 7:33a long time, Bill. You remember anything quite like
- 7:36this. I don't remember anything quite
- 7:39like this, Trent, as far as basketball goes.
- 7:42Then again, you know how my January looked from the football
- 7:47transfer portal thing, I had never seen that before either.
- 7:50So a bunch of news, poorest this year as far as that goes.
- 7:55But yeah, I mean, this was a staff that, you know, TJ was
- 7:58even a couple guys down from assistants that went on to be
- 8:02head coaches. I think he leaned a lot on on
- 8:06Nate Schmidt, Eric Crawford, the other guys on his staff, Micah
- 8:10Byers to an extent. And then they they set out with
- 8:14a plan. I, I think, you know, one of the
- 8:16good things about the way the portal shaked out this year was
- 8:21that starting the midnight after the championship game is you had
- 8:27that steady flow of announcements by players the
- 8:30last three or four weeks leading up to that, that they're
- 8:34entering the portal. So when everything officially
- 8:36opened on Wednesday, this was a coaching staff with the plan.
- 8:40You know, granted, it's still not at full strength as far as
- 8:43the, the full allotment of full time assistant coaches, but they
- 8:47hit the trail with a plan. They identified the guys that
- 8:51they wanted and and they did. And you know, we've seen, I
- 8:55mean, even what the work, the work TJ's done in the high
- 8:58school recruiting game over the years, if he can get those guys
- 9:02on campus, it's a it's a pretty good hit rate on who Iowa State
- 9:06has made a priority. We we saw Montsilovich's
- 9:09announcement, we saw TJ's statement.
- 9:12So supporting Mylan's decision to go to the NBA and and to
- 9:16thank him and Sedley etcetera. Would you say is the door
- 9:19completely closed on Montsilovich coming back?
- 9:21I mean the rosters only got so many spots and and the NIL go so
- 9:26far. Has the door totally closed on
- 9:27Monchilovich? I think it pretty much has, but
- 9:31I, I don't know, in this line of work, you never see never
- 9:35anymore. And I think you, you also look
- 9:38at the fact that, you know, I, I math might not be my specialty
- 9:44or whatever, But when I'm adding up the numbers of Iowa State's
- 9:48web share, when you got Jefferson Lipsy and Mount
- 9:52Chilovich coming off the books and you've got mostly a pretty
- 9:57young group of guys coming back that I would assume they weren't
- 10:00paying them a whole lot of money.
- 10:02You know, those guys are going to get raises.
- 10:04Killian's going to get a raise. Jamario, I'm sure you can.
- 10:08And all those those four guys played it.
- 10:10The four guys in the rotation are going to get raises.
- 10:13You've got the freshman coming in.
- 10:15I don't know that they're going to demand a premium as far as
- 10:18Rev share goes. And then you've got the five
- 10:20transfers. I mean, these weren't guys that
- 10:22were coming from necessarily like, you know, the blue bloods
- 10:27that an average double digits might, you know, would command 4
- 10:31or $5 billion a year. These guys are not that I think
- 10:34they're they're solid as a group, But you know, when you
- 10:39add things up, I still think Iowa State's probably got a
- 10:43little bit of money to spend in the in the Rev share game.
- 10:47And I think that that TJ is, I think reportedly going to get a
- 10:50little bit more money this year with that total pot increasing a
- 10:55little bit what it was a year ago.
- 10:56So I think he's still got some room to go out and get somebody
- 11:00and and who knows if Milan, if that thing happens where the the
- 11:04reviews are not good, he's not like in the way it's trending.
- 11:09You never say never. Who Who knows, Maybe he does end
- 11:12up back at Iowa State. Very interesting and and how
- 11:15that plays out because they're at 15, which is the roster Maxes
- 11:18that has changed and evolved throughout the years.
- 11:20Want to get your perspective on a couple of these?
- 11:22I've got them. I've actually got them at 14 is.
- 11:24It. 14 Trent, Maybe I'm adding wrong, but I'm I'm not looking
- 11:29at my computer right now. I'm driving, but I think they're
- 11:32I think they're at 14 right now. We still don't know.
- 11:36We haven't got anything from Xavion Mitchell.
- 11:38I think it's a positive. You know, he didn't play a whole
- 11:40lot. You know, maybe he wants to
- 11:42stick around and develop his game.
- 11:44He broke Tyrese Halliburton's scoring record and at his high
- 11:48school. So I mean, he's got a lot of
- 11:50potential. So I still think, you know, we
- 11:53wait for that. That could drop him down to 13.
- 11:56But either way, they've got the flexibility to add one more guy,
- 12:00and I bet you they've got a little bit of money leftover in
- 12:02the budget to do it too. Jaquan Johnson, Ken and I
- 12:06mentioned him back during the season.
- 12:08We saw him play. I think we thought it was
- 12:10against you and I, but I think it was 5 foot 11, tough guard.
- 12:13He is a top 100 player in the transfer portal rankings from on
- 12:16three and Rivals. Tell us a little bit about his
- 12:18fit and him playing maybe in the back court together, obviously
- 12:21with the guys that they have returning.
- 12:23Johnson's fit with the Cyclone team.
- 12:26Yeah, I think he's an excellent addition.
- 12:28You look at you look at the scouting reports out there of
- 12:32him so far, I think the only negative I really read from
- 12:35every one of them is that he's short.
- 12:37He's 510. I think that's the only knock on
- 12:40the guy. I mean, he was an incredible
- 12:42player for for Bradley at the Missouri Valley Conference
- 12:46level. What he was I think the
- 12:47defensive player of the year in the in the conference, well in
- 12:51the double digits and scoring. I think he's a good shooter.
- 12:55He can he can get the ball, get the ball to the rack and and
- 12:59distribute the ball. And I think he's the perfect
- 13:02addition to go with a, with a Torre and with a Bateman.
- 13:06I'm not sure that he comes in and and probably starts right
- 13:10away, but I think he's certainly one of those guys like, you
- 13:14know, maybe like a Bateman was this year where he's that second
- 13:17guy off the bench coming in that first rotation.
- 13:21And, you know, assuming Tori and Bateman stepped into starting
- 13:24roles, well, I think Johnson's probably that first guard off
- 13:27the bench for sure. Women's the women's game we know
- 13:31the apparently Audie crooks was on a plane headed to New York.
- 13:34Not sure what she's going on but could be.
- 13:36Must be more than vacation this time of year would kind of be a
- 13:39bit of. A guess not.
- 13:41That's the time she's chosen to do that.
- 13:43But what are you hearing pursuant to Audie Crooks?
- 13:47We we know that Jaden Williams is at LSU believe is where she's
- 13:51decided to play next year. What about Audie Crooks?
- 13:54What are you hearing her? I guess her and Addie Brown
- 13:56Bill. Yeah, I think that they're going
- 14:00to end up at at probably the FCC or the Big 10 level.
- 14:04You know, there were a lot of reports out there on on Audie
- 14:07where she was going to end up. I think Notre Dame was one of
- 14:10them early. I I've seen since then the the,
- 14:14the Notre Dame guys on on three saying that that's not going to
- 14:18happen. So I think you look back
- 14:21Maryland, probably one of those, although you wonder how Maryland
- 14:25plays, if that's necessarily a fit, but maybe drawing the
- 14:29connection there with with Brenda Freeze being an Iowa
- 14:32native. Also Speaking of Iowa native,
- 14:36head coaches were on check down at that OUI think that was one
- 14:40of the original schools as well mentioned.
- 14:44So and then then Addie Brown. There's also been some reports
- 14:47up from Talia Goodman from on three on her.
- 14:51She I think as many like 3 schools right now and again at
- 14:55that SEC Big 10 level with her. On the women's side, they do
- 15:00have a commitment. They got Maya Babbitt out of the
- 15:03portal from the Mack Kent State Guard average over 16 a game.
- 15:06More names popping at this point.
- 15:08Still kind of a holding pattern. What else could you tell us of
- 15:11bringing players into Iowa State?
- 15:14Well, yeah, I mean, it's still kind of been a holding pattern
- 15:16there in addition to what what they'll add beyond Maya Babbitt.
- 15:21I think she's a, she's a nice addition though, just for this,
- 15:25this season and, and you know, a lot of old timers around the
- 15:31around the scene in Iowa high school sports.
- 15:33Both her parents were prep players of the state of Iowa.
- 15:37They both went on to play basketball at Dana College
- 15:41actually in Blair, NE. So she's very familiar with the
- 15:45area. I think she was a nice start for
- 15:47them. But again, I, I think it's, it's
- 15:49a, it's a unique situation because, you know, Finley's got
- 15:54one year left on his deal. I, I'm not sure there's been any
- 15:57indications on if he's going to get extended beyond that.
- 16:01So, you know, it is what it is. I think that they get Babbitt
- 16:04who's very familiar with the state of Midwest kid, get her on
- 16:08board. But you know, beyond that, the
- 16:11kids who are going to come in and be seniors, that's going to
- 16:14be an interesting process or a sales bench right there.
- 16:17If you're recruiting freshmen, soft freshmen, sophomores, and
- 16:23you know what they could expect beyond next season.
- 16:26So I think it's still kind of a little bit of give and take
- 16:28there. But they'll, they'll, they'll
- 16:30have a team next year and, and we'll see see how things shake
- 16:35out. We we know they're going to feel
- 16:37the team indeed. Hey, are are the men going on a
- 16:41foreign trip this year or are they?
- 16:43Do we still do that? I think we do.
- 16:46And if. You think so?
- 16:47That's a good that's a good question, Kenny.
- 16:49I I thought that that was like every.
- 16:52Four years. Three years like.
- 16:53Every four years, three years or four years and it it's probably
- 16:57is going on three or four years, but there's not been anything
- 17:01released on that. I don't I don't even really
- 17:03recall any chatter about it at all.
- 17:05Just kind of informally, they will be going back out to that
- 17:09players era festival that that that has been expanded or Big 12
- 17:15teams out there in that with the tie end of the conference.
- 17:18They did was that I believe it was New HAMP was a New Hampshire
- 17:23they announced would be playing at Hilton this year too.
- 17:27That was something new schedule wise.
- 17:29It was released over the last week.
- 17:32So the things are starting to come together a little bit and
- 17:35it'll be it's a it's an interesting process for Micah
- 17:39Byers. I mean last year Iowa State
- 17:41really went out and and bulked that thing up.
- 17:43So they obviously they've got Purdue coming to Ames, but this
- 17:47is a team team that's kind of in transition right now.
- 17:50And I'm not sure how much more aggressive they get really with
- 17:54bringing in like any more blue bloods beyond kind of what we
- 17:58know right now. They are going to open the
- 18:00season in Sioux Falls again. So there's that one.
- 18:04There's Purdue. So but I and with the Vegas
- 18:07thing, I'm not sure how aggressive they get beyond that,
- 18:10just kind of given that the roster that they've got coming
- 18:13back and just kind of, you know, new guys, a lot of new guys kind
- 18:17of feeling. Yeah, without a doubt, No, no
- 18:20doubt. Obviously side Hawks are going
- 18:21to take place and that you, you know damn well the players are,
- 18:26is going to field a quality, quality tournament with the
- 18:29teams that go there. Bill Seals, you're busy, guys.
- 18:32cyclonereport.com, Bill, what have you got as far as media
- 18:35availabilities this week when it comes to football?
- 18:38Was this it? Well, we'll be back up there
- 18:41again on Wednesday for some more position coach once we haven't
- 18:47had, you know, the full allotment of of guys there yet.
- 18:51So yeah, we'll be back up there for two coaches come Wednesday.
- 18:57I'm pulling that e-mail right up right now with John Johnson,
- 19:01running backs coach and Mike Banks, the cornerbacks coach.
- 19:04So we'll, we'll cover those two positions for the subscribers
- 19:08Cyclone report, you know, all the the highlights from those
- 19:12press conferences Wednesday and we'll get some players along
- 19:15with that as well. Good stuff and Trent's off on
- 19:18Thursday, so I'm guessing I'll be in your texts at some point
- 19:22regarding you're coming with me. Thank you buddy.
- 19:24Appreciate it. Bill Seals cyclonereport.com
- 19:26cyclonereport.com rival slash on three media for Bill Seals with
- 19:30the all the Iowa State news. Thank you buddy.
- 19:32Talk to you, Bill. Guys, have a good one.
- 19:35Good to talk to Bill Seals as he breaks the law looking at his
- 19:39emails. We'll try.
- 19:42Funny. He's a good dude, Bill.
- 19:45Very in tune. And lots of Iowa State news to
- 19:48get us through the end of April as portal is open.
- 19:53I'm actually I want to see Ronnie Crooks ends up and and
- 19:56will we know is is there a a not a clearing house?
- 19:59No, we'll never know. How will we?
- 20:01No. You've been talking about this
- 20:03for five years. No.
- 20:04Shouldn't we? No.
- 20:05Well, yes. At least a ballpark.
- 20:08The ballparks are wrong. It's all funny money.
- 20:10Ken, I've been saying this to you for five years.
- 20:12But I want to know. I know you do, but you're not
- 20:14going to. And somebody might think they
- 20:17know. Guess what?
- 20:18They're full of crap. But they might know.
- 20:21For the most part, they're probably full of crap.
- 20:24We don't know. We don't have any clue, I cold
- 20:26said earlier. 2 1/2 to $3,000,000 for Elvill, for
- 20:29Garris. That's that's good for him, yes,
- 20:33good for him if it's true. Yeah.
- 20:35But we had estimates of 1 1/2 last year from Fool Garrison
- 20:39until the shot against Florida. They completely overspent and
- 20:43after that and after the no we. Did have a few moments, but
- 20:46sure. But you're looking for more
- 20:47production than what they got for.
- 20:48That they got their money's worth all in one shot.
- 20:51Yes, getting to the Sweet 16, that was a different one.
- 20:54And is there a guy that you really like out of this group
- 20:57coming in for Iowa State out of the portal?
- 20:59Yeah, the the Northwestern. Transport.
- 21:01You really like Singleton? Yeah, I do.
- 21:02He popped to you 6-8. I'm.
- 21:05I'm intrigued by the Prather kid already from Robin.
- 21:07Moore That was the last of the five to sign.
- 21:09He's like a a thick guard, 65 strong, pretty good offensive
- 21:13numbers. The other thing looking at the
- 21:15defensive metrics. Yeah, pretty good.
- 21:17So when you say thick like control Horton thick?
- 21:20No, not that thick. Cantrell was like his old.
- 21:22He was a big dude. He.
- 21:23Was so big. He was just good player.
- 21:26Yeah, absolutely. And a tremendous shooter on top
- 21:28of it. But yeah, a thicker guard, not
- 21:31kind of the lanky frame to him, but he's got he's got some
- 21:33girth, some size and right like Prather kind of just again,
- 21:38we're watching 2 minute highlight.
- 21:39No, you're right. You're.
- 21:40Right. How often is that guy sucks?
- 21:43Yeah, really. He's going to be a stiff.
- 21:45Pretty rare that you get that. That comes out of it.
- 21:47We talked about Leon Bond. Obviously that connection, the
- 21:49Taj Manning 1 is just odd. I mean, of the five guys,
- 21:54because he averaged, what, 3 points?
- 21:55A game? Not very many, yeah.
- 21:56I think it was something like that.
- 21:58That's the one that. Now, we both like Johnson's
- 22:00game. We both mentioned it during the
- 22:03when they were in Saint Louis at some point.
- 22:05That was that. A Friday game could have been.
- 22:07I think it was. All right.
- 22:08We'll come back more on the Masters with our friend Matt
- 22:10Rudy, long time golf writer. He joins us next Miller in
- 22:13Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:18When I put this music away for 360 days, yeah, sad.
- 22:22What a great event. Absolutely phenomenal event.
- 22:24Got a little nap on my birthday. Watch it.
- 22:27Ohh yeah I forgot. Yes, close my eyes for a little
- 22:29bit. It was a perfect Saturday.
- 22:32HPD to you, HPD to you, belated. I love when the Masters falls on
- 22:36that one because I got an excuse I got to.
- 22:38Watch Golf My birthday, Leave me alone.
- 22:41Matt Rudy Golf Digest, formerly Golf Digest, now ghost writing
- 22:45books and still covering the game Soup to nuts and he joins
- 22:47us. Hello Matt Rudy.
- 22:49Great tournament as always. It lived up to it with one
- 22:52exception. And it's strange to say this
- 22:54because CBS is normally so damn button up.
- 22:57It's such a great broadcast. You have to think of many errors
- 23:01over the years, but man oh man, they had a rough 18th hole
- 23:04yesterday, did they not? Wow.
- 23:07You know, there are a few times where players would hit shots
- 23:10and just because of where they happened to have the camera, you
- 23:12couldn't see where anything ended up.
- 23:14You know, they're there and that would happen on 18 a little bit.
- 23:17And there were some other times too, where it was almost like a
- 23:20mystery. And then and to me, number one,
- 23:23that place has more coverage, more cameras, more wires, more,
- 23:27you know, you're in the same spot every year.
- 23:29So you kind of know where everything is going to happen in
- 23:31front of you. And so, you know, to have a
- 23:33tournament where you can literally watch every shot of
- 23:36every player on the app to have the TV broadcast fall short is a
- 23:41tough one. I think what's happening too is
- 23:43the standards are getting so high in terms of what we can see
- 23:46and measure and read about and analyze and, you know, just on
- 23:49your phone that you know, to, for the broadcast to live up to
- 23:52it is tough. But you know, I think the plus
- 23:57seeing everything in high definition in 4K or, you know,
- 24:01you can really see a lot of the, the words that there happened to
- 24:04be any. So I'm probably inclined to give
- 24:05him a pass on that. What does this mean for Rory in
- 24:09terms of his legacy going forward?
- 24:11The face of golf as he is finally breaks through at the
- 24:14Masters, completes the career Grant same a year ago but now
- 24:17getting into the company is with Jack and with Nick Ronaldo and
- 24:20with Tiger as the only back-to-back winners.
- 24:23What does this do with just his legacy as a golfer going
- 24:26back-to-back here? You know, I think what it's
- 24:30probably doing is he went through an artificial dry spell
- 24:35for someone of his talent. You know, that long stretch
- 24:37between majors, you would have predicted that he would have won
- 24:41more than he did. And I just think the nature of
- 24:45statistics and the nature of distribution and probability or
- 24:48whatever you want to call it, if he goes on and wins 2 majors
- 24:51this year, I think when you look back on his career, it's it'll
- 24:54probably just even out the trajectory that we all would
- 24:57have anticipated when he started winning so many of these, you
- 25:00know, 12 or 15 years ago. And I think it's a testament to
- 25:04what he's accomplished that you could be, you know, arguably one
- 25:08of the five best players of the last, you know, you call it the
- 25:12post Jack Nicholas era. He's certainly one of the five
- 25:15best players in the post tech Nicholas era to, you know, to
- 25:18win that many tournaments and have have it somehow be a
- 25:21disappointment, which is really what we talked on this show, you
- 25:24know, two years ago, three years ago, four years ago.
- 25:26You know, the perception is that he didn't do enough.
- 25:29So I, you know, I think he's kind of getting back to what
- 25:31everybody expected. And I think also what this is
- 25:35showing. And I know you always love
- 25:37talking about live and about money, you know, things off the
- 25:40golf course. But I but I really do think that
- 25:42as he's been able to get away from that responsibility of
- 25:45being the spokesperson for, you know, global golf, not live and
- 25:49just be a golfer. You know, that that's probably
- 25:52easier to do too. You know, you can just kind of
- 25:55stay in your lane and answer the questions that you want to
- 25:58answer and, and, and have a little bit more of a focus on
- 26:03what's between the ropes as opposed to what's in the
- 26:05boardroom. I mean that that's, that's got
- 26:06to be a good thing for him too. I I was struck by how many
- 26:09people social media and it draws all kinds as we know,
- 26:13legitimately felt that Rory had an unfair advantage because he
- 26:16was allowed to practice there for the three weeks leading up
- 26:19to it. Well, so could have Scheffler,
- 26:21so could have Brooks, so could have anybody that's won there
- 26:24before. But they decided to play in
- 26:27turn, Rory decided to focus on, I think he said.
- 26:30I think I, I read a quote earlier over the weekend about
- 26:33the 16 most important rounds of the year and of course meaning
- 26:37the four majors. And it's hard to argue that, but
- 26:39I was struck by how many people were legitimately believed that
- 26:43this was unfair because Rory got to practice there and the other
- 26:45guys didn't. Well, I mean, I mean, Scotty had
- 26:49a kid. So I mean that that's that's
- 26:50kind of a you know, that, that that's a obviously a blessing
- 26:53for him, but it's a little bit of a disadvantage to in in terms
- 26:55of prep. And you know, the Rory's got
- 26:58responsibilities during tournament week that every other
- 27:01player doesn't have. You know, he's, he's you know,
- 27:03he's going in and answering questions.
- 27:04He's in the jacket. He's you know, he's doing media,
- 27:06he's got all the extra scrutiny. He's doing the Champions dinner.
- 27:10You know, they're, they're I guess you could say that there's
- 27:13an advantage to see the place. But I would also say that the
- 27:16the way the course plays, for example, for the Augusta
- 27:19National or the Augusta women's tournament, you know, the week
- 27:21before by definition, and you know, that setup is not the same
- 27:26as it is for the for the men's event.
- 27:29So yes, you can get some familiarity broadly with what's
- 27:32going on, but the conditions themselves are much different.
- 27:35As we saw even tournament week, it was brutal on Thursday,
- 27:39brutal. And, and to play in the
- 27:41afternoon on Thursday was a really tough assignment.
- 27:44And they actually backed off the golf course a little bit and
- 27:47added some water and, you know, made it a little more, you know,
- 27:50conducive to scoring. So I think, and we talked about
- 27:53this a lot, I think the main feature that champions have is
- 27:57that they can adapt to what's presented.
- 27:59You know, if it's windy and difficult, they adapt.
- 28:01If it's super low scoring, you know, shoot it out weak, they
- 28:05adapt. And generally speaking, the
- 28:07people that complain are either, you know, social media, you
- 28:12know, people need to take or #2 they're players that aren't as
- 28:16mentally strong as the greatest players are.
- 28:18And and they want to pin the the reason for not playing well on
- 28:21something other than their own play.
- 28:24Did they back off too much? I was very hopeful that we were
- 28:29going to see this be a real test after the back-to-back years of
- 28:31sloppy wet conditions. I was hopeful that they were
- 28:34going to dry this thing out and make it even more difficult.
- 28:37Now you got a tremendously report and I guess that would be
- 28:39the push back against it. Were you like me or I'm also a
- 28:42sicko? I love the US Open.
- 28:43You, you love those car crashes, man.
- 28:46We've talked about this before. I, I am in favor of the best
- 28:50rewarding, the best player. And I think what we saw from
- 28:55Rory and I think the main difference is this Rory versus
- 28:59the Rory from the, you know, the guy trying to win the career
- 29:01Grand Slam. As you could see in events and
- 29:04the ones in particular that stand out for me, the US Open in
- 29:10LAA couple years ago, he was hitting a great hit every green
- 29:13just couldn't make a pot. Saint Andrews British Open a few
- 29:16years ago, you could just see the air coming out of his
- 29:19balloon as he couldn't capitalize on these great shots
- 29:22and the Rory we saw this week certainly had periods where he
- 29:26was pretty scratchy and not in great shots fell behind, you
- 29:30know, gave up a big lead. But then you could see the
- 29:33bounce come back pretty quickly. And I think the reason this is
- 29:38such a great tournament is that the the venue allows for that
- 29:43let it can beat you up. You can make a double.
- 29:46I mean, Justin Rose missed A1 foot putt.
- 29:49You know, he's 3 parted, 3 parted on a par 5.
- 29:51And it's a place where making a park and feel like making a
- 29:55double because you did on the green and you can make an eagle
- 29:57and you don't. And I think that those those
- 30:01mind games and the opportunity that's in front of you to hit
- 30:04the hero shot to make a score is what makes these final rounds so
- 30:10compelling. And when the golfers demand
- 30:13something specific out of you, one specific strategy that only
- 30:17rewards one specific kind of player.
- 30:19And what I liked about this leaderboard in particular is
- 30:21that you had an, you know, a whole variety of players.
- 30:24You've got Justin Rose is a 45 year old guy who's not a long
- 30:27hitter. You've got Scotty Scheffler,
- 30:29who's the number one player in the world.
- 30:30You've got the defending champion.
- 30:32You've got, you know, you've got, you know, all you've got
- 30:36new players, you've got veterans.
- 30:37I think those, those stories and the fact that a variety of
- 30:41different kind of players can, can play under the conditions
- 30:44they set up this week is a testament to the fact that that
- 30:47these, you know, the Augusta National folks you're in and
- 30:50you're out do the best job of setting up the venue.
- 30:53Of course they have the most control, but they they do a
- 30:55great job setting up the setting up the venue.
- 30:57Yeah, and we just know this. We know Augusta because we watch
- 31:00it every year and it doesn't move around.
- 31:01It's such a fascinating spot. All right, here's a hypothetical
- 31:04and maybe it's a better question for sports talk radio in, you
- 31:07know, July. But if you put the back-to-back
- 31:10winners, and I'm not going to ask you who would win, but I'm
- 31:12going to ask you set odds if you would.
- 31:13Jack and and Feldo and Tiger and Rory.
- 31:17The Tiger's going to be the betting favorite, all right,
- 31:19because he's so damn popular. But a lot of people love Jack.
- 31:22Who would be the favorite at the betting shops of that?
- 31:26Force. Well, I mean, you mean if
- 31:27they're all in the. Prime of their career, prime of
- 31:30the Yeah, I don't want 86 year old Jack playing Rory this week.
- 31:34Yeah, I mean. I don't think there's any.
- 31:35Yeah. I don't think there's any doubt
- 31:36that Faldo would be the. Longest shot I hate.
- 31:39To Dennis yeah, I hate to denigrate.
- 31:41I mean, he's got a great record. I'm getting me wrong.
- 31:43I'm not saying he's terrible, but.
- 31:45And that and out of those four, he's substantially the shortest
- 31:48hitter out of those four. And that would be a big
- 31:52disadvantage. And are we playing in the golf
- 31:54course the way it's configured now?
- 31:55Are we playing? I mean, we're playing
- 31:58essentially a 7700 yard golf course now in even when Tiger
- 32:03was winning this, you know, Tiger was hitting wedges into
- 32:06par fives. And that's just not, that's not
- 32:08the golf course they're playing now.
- 32:09But I mean it would be, it would be pretty hard to to draw a line
- 32:13through those guys. But I think the big advantage
- 32:15that the Tiger has certainly over Jack, Tiger short game is
- 32:19much, much better than Jack's ever was.
- 32:22Tiger was an excellent putter and an excellent clutch putter.
- 32:27Rory's got a big advantage over Tiger and driving the ball.
- 32:30You know, Jack was obviously a great driver with the ball too.
- 32:33But I think if you're playing under the modern, the way the
- 32:36courses are built now, I think it would probably be Tiger and
- 32:41Rory would be right up there. Unbelievable.
- 32:43Give me a name outside of the top five guy that you thought
- 32:46had a great tournament, good maybe going forward and be
- 32:49excited about the rest of the majors this year, and then a
- 32:52thumbs down go the other way, somebody that you thought was in
- 32:55good form just didn't have it this weekend.
- 32:57A good and a bad from this weekend outside of the top tier
- 32:59guys. Well, I, I mean, I, I'm sure
- 33:02Bryson was looking for something a lot different than he than he
- 33:05got. And, and, and I think it's a,
- 33:09you know, Jon ROM in the same boat.
- 33:11I think it's kind of a testimony to it being tricky to figure out
- 33:15how to get ready for majors when you're playing and live events
- 33:18where the format is different than major championships, The
- 33:21courses are different, the formats are different.
- 33:23And you're trying to evaluate just how valuable it is to win
- 33:27an event or, you know, what is playing great at an event like
- 33:30that mean? And I also think those players
- 33:33have traditionally gotten ready for majors in different ways
- 33:36before when they're on the PGA Tour and they just might, they
- 33:39might not have figured out the exact cadence, certainly for the
- 33:42first major of the year. It's a little different when
- 33:44it's the middle of the summer and you're and you're doing some
- 33:46different things. But, but I would say those two
- 33:48guys certainly had a hugely disappointing week.
- 33:52And, and I mean, Max Homer had a really good, it was the second
- 33:55year, second year in a row. I think he's finished in the top
- 33:5812 and he's really struggled over the last couple of years.
- 34:01And I think it was really was a, it was a he became very famous
- 34:06and he had some fantastic results and the attention that
- 34:10that brings and the contracts that it brings and the changes
- 34:13in equipment and all those things that come with being one
- 34:16of the 10 most famous players in the world.
- 34:19It takes some players a little bit longer.
- 34:21You know, Justin Rose went through the same thing when he
- 34:23signed a big equipment deal with Hanma and had a whole new bag of
- 34:26gear and he basically couldn't play for a year, Not because the
- 34:28equipment was bad, it's just was different from what he played
- 34:31before. But I think having this kind of
- 34:34result for him early in the season and, you know, giving him
- 34:38the prospect of trying to get back into some of these elevated
- 34:40events again, I think that's a big deal.
- 34:43And it would be a great thing because he's a really, he's a
- 34:45great interview. He's a great guy.
- 34:46And you know, having charismatic younger players is a really
- 34:50important thing for the tour. Last thing, and we'll reconvene
- 34:53in about a month to talk about it.
- 34:54A Ron a Minik Baron, a Mink. I, I have, I've never heard of
- 34:57the course. It's in Philadelphia.
- 35:00They've only played one major there before PGA apparently in
- 35:02the early 6. Didn't you say Gary Player 1 of
- 35:05Trent? Is that what you said last week?
- 35:06I think. But regardless, it's been a
- 35:09while since a major's been there.
- 35:10Have you seen this course? If So, what can you tell us
- 35:12about it? I have it's, you know, it's a
- 35:15classic mainline Philadelphia golf course.
- 35:18You know, when you, when you get up, for example, in the New York
- 35:20area in Westchester County, where you have wings, but you
- 35:23know, a lot of the great courses around New York City, the
- 35:25mainline in Philly, Mary, and you know, there's, there's a lot
- 35:28of courses in that same vein around Philadelphia.
- 35:32And, and I really like what the PGA Championship is doing.
- 35:36And I think they're they're trying to to move into some
- 35:40venues where there's some, there's a there's a richer
- 35:43history. You know, there was a while
- 35:45where the PGA Championship, they tried to take it to their own
- 35:48venues, you know, to the two courses they owned.
- 35:51And because there's so much more revenue in an event when you own
- 35:54the golf course. But I think, you know, I mean,
- 35:57just just look at the one they had in Louisville.
- 35:59I mean, not only did was it was it was the golf course kind of a
- 36:03struggle, but the best player in the world gets arrested trying
- 36:05to kind of pull in the parking lot before the tournament.
- 36:08So I think if you can, if you can sort of draft off off of
- 36:12some of the competitive history and the just the pure history of
- 36:16the location, the region, the area, you know, the Chicago
- 36:19area, Philadelphia area, you know, metro New York City,
- 36:24There's there's this this rich history in terms of the golf
- 36:27courses. I think that's, it's a great
- 36:30move by the PGA and I think we're going to see my favorite
- 36:34kind of, you know, combination setup, which is you're not
- 36:38making it stupid hard like the US Open, but you know, there's
- 36:41some trickiness to it. But they let the players shoot
- 36:44the scores they're going to shoot.
- 36:46I think the PGA gets the right. I think the British Open gets
- 36:49the right and I think I think we're going to be rewarded with
- 36:52a good leaderboard. Good stuff and you'll reward
- 36:55Trent and I, our audience with another appearance proceeding
- 36:57and then recapping it. Matt Rudy, thank you, bud for
- 37:00what you do for us. Appreciate it.
- 37:01And we'll talk to you in about a month.
- 37:02Thank you, Matt. Trent, I think you're going to
- 37:05start calling your birthday moving day, right?
- 37:07Absolutely. I love when that this.
- 37:09Year, absolutely good stuff, Matt.
- 37:10Thank you, pal. See you, buddy.
- 37:12Good to talk to you Matt Rudy, a long time golf writer.
- 37:16Have you seen the odds for the Aronomatic?
- 37:19I have not. I've got them in front of these
- 37:21are from DraftKings for the PGA. OK, I'm going to guess Scheffler
- 37:25still prohibitive. He is.
- 37:26He's plus 380. No thanks on that price.
- 37:30But my God, watching this guy come back from absolutely He put
- 37:33a team in the ground Saturday morning. 36 holes to play, 12
- 37:36shots off the lead lost by a dimples.
- 37:38And I had a couple of now if Rose would have won, won, we
- 37:41would have been in great shape. Would you have?
- 37:43You but I had a couple of live tickets just even started on I
- 37:46think it was Thursday, like you gotta have Scheffler in there
- 37:49somewhere. Yeah and then when he get him, I
- 37:51think I got him a + 1650 at one point Saturday.
- 37:54I don't even remember the time. Yeah, but it was just one of
- 37:57those things where. At that price, you got to take a
- 37:59shot. Throwing 10 bucks on it just
- 38:01because he is so good and we've seen this so many times that he
- 38:04comes roaring back and gives yourself an out.
- 38:07I, of course didn't get home. Rose would have been great.
- 38:11That would have been the one. But you could just.
- 38:14The lead there was something, it just wasn't quite there.
- 38:18It was hard to put your finger on.
- 38:20I never felt confident though, that he was ultimately, even as
- 38:23the back nine started through a man coder, that he was suddenly
- 38:26going to be the guy. McElroy Second choice plus 650.
- 38:30OK, who else do you want to know about?
- 38:33Where's our guy Bobby Mack? Yeah, when can we get Robert
- 38:36McIntyre after that disaster? This.
- 38:38Morning and get him at 66 to one.
- 38:40Wow, that's a good bro. 60 to one for Victor Hovlin who
- 38:45finished very strong. 35 to 1. Where's my boy Zander?
- 38:49Zander Zander who's a short price he is.
- 38:53I just passed him 16 to one. Jon ROM 12 to Shambo, 10.
- 38:58I don't think I'm getting involved in either of those
- 38:59markets. Cameron Young, 22 to one.
- 39:02He's going to win another. He's good.
- 39:06No, he's he's good. Now, this is not going to be a
- 39:08bomber course. Isn't it OK?
- 39:10So I wonder. Look, there was Gary Player that
- 39:12won when they were there and I think it was 62.
- 39:14How much the course kind of changes with that, what we're
- 39:16used to and so many bomber courses that are out there, what
- 39:19the rough's going to look like, because PGA is kind of all over
- 39:22the place. I mean, you get a ton of
- 39:23different flavors with this course.
- 39:24We know the US Open, it's going to be tricked up.
- 39:27It's going to be incredibly difficult rough.
- 39:28It's going to be 1/2 shot penalty if you put it in there.
- 39:31That's just the way the US Open is set up.
- 39:33PGA, you could have a bomber course, you could have a pitch
- 39:36and putt. You have a wild, wild range
- 39:38here. So that will be one that will
- 39:40require a little bit more coursework.
- 39:43Now you did you also hear speak in the PGA, the continued talk
- 39:46and moving it back to August. No.
- 39:48Why? I'm ready for it.
- 39:50You want it there. I'm ready for it.
- 39:52How come? At the time I wanted to see how
- 39:55this worked. Kind of a major a month all
- 39:56throughout. We need something more in
- 39:58August. Trent, we've got football.
- 40:01We don't. We have.
- 40:01Pre season we have pre season football.
- 40:04We don't have football that matters on August 7th.
- 40:07We've got the Hall of Fame game exactly I, I when I was stated
- 40:13going through their practices. We're starting to 0 when we're
- 40:16coming up with eight and four, six and six.
- 40:19I gave it a chance, I like it. I'm ready to go back to audio.
- 40:23I like it. Stretch out that golf season a
- 40:25little bit more. You won't miss it in May.
- 40:28No, there's other golf tournaments to bet on.
- 40:31You won't miss the content in May maybe.
- 40:35Maybe that was as much to do with it as anything for me.
- 40:37I think that was a strong partner too.
- 40:39Trent's plays of the day are next.
- 40:41Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 40:44Hi Miller, Condon. Welcome back.
- 40:46Final segment Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 40:48Circus Sports sponsors this segment.
- 40:51Trent Staley plays of the day. No baskets tonight.
- 40:55A full slate of MLB. Yeah, I'm not full slate.
- 40:59Decent slate. Some hockey as well.
- 41:02Basketball tomorrow. So we've got the seven versus
- 41:04the 8th. The winner gets in the playoffs.
- 41:06The loser waits for the winner of the 8-9, no, the 910 game.
- 41:11The loser of that game goes home.
- 41:12Their season is over. Well, and the weird thing is, so
- 41:15the Eastern Conference game tomorrow, the Heaton Hornets,
- 41:17that's the 910 game, But the Western Conference nightcap on
- 41:20Tuesday is A-78 game. You'd think they'd be together,
- 41:23right? Where?
- 41:24Where the Who's the home team? The Hornets in the East, and
- 41:28then in the 7-8 game it is the Suns whenever that one locks
- 41:31into the seventh seed. You'd think that you want to
- 41:33have both of those, but maybe not, because I have no idea.
- 41:36It just struck me as odd, at minimum, that that's the way
- 41:39that they had it structured to their.
- 41:41But meaningful basketball starts tomorrow.
- 41:43Well, and I do wonder also, you're gonna finish it up with
- 41:47the Warriors and the Clippers, Steph, if that's maybe the.
- 41:50Testification is your answer. Yeah, making it about not TV
- 41:54streaming. Because he's, well, they're on
- 41:56prime. Yes, 3 baseball, 1 hockey.
- 42:00All right. Let's start with the baseball.
- 42:02Get a jump on The Astros are ice cold.
- 42:06Seattle at 3:00 this afternoon. They're not going to go winless
- 42:09the rest of the way. So let's jump on board right
- 42:12now. Let's see if they can end the
- 42:13losing streak. Plus 158 against the Mariners.
- 42:16Going to grab the Bravos, play good bat baseball -143 as they
- 42:20take on the Marlins tonight. Going back to the well again
- 42:23with another Nationals. Over with that awful bullpen.
- 42:26Over 7 1/2 tonight against the Pirates and wrap it up.
- 42:30This may be our final time together that I get to say this.
- 42:35I'm taking your Jets tonight. Why plus 158?
- 42:38Because it might be the last time that I get to say that.
- 42:40There's no justification besides that.
- 42:42I just want to bring up your Winnipeg Jets one more time and
- 42:45maybe they could give you a payday at Plus 150.
- 42:47Well, I hope you lose because it's all about the draft.
- 42:50Oh, you're into this again? Oh geez.
- 42:52But I'll be rooting for you. We'll see this as a reverse hex
- 42:55because you know, I'll get it wrong.
- 42:56That'll work for me, yes, we'll work for you tomorrow again at
- 43:00noon. We appreciate you being with
- 43:01Trent tonight as we talk sports Monday through Friday.
- 43:03New to 2 Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
