- 0:40pigs.com. Today on ha ha, our contestants
- 0:45will be testing their Muppet ational metal with a series of
- 0:48questions, about the early years of one of the longest-running TV
- 0:52shows of all time. That's right, we're on our
- 0:56weapon Ragini throat, that's right.
- 1:00Right. We're on our way to where the
- 1:02air is sweet with an episode about old-school Sesame Street.
- 1:05And today's episode is brought to you by the letter H.
- 1:08And the number three, this is what passes for small talk
- 1:12around here as the world's biggest Prairie, Dawn fan, I'm
- 1:17thrilled to be leading a little pageant of my own here today.
- 1:21So, welcome all Welcome to our little quiz.
- 1:23And today's performers are Scott Hanson of Muppet Wiki and Shane
- 1:28Keating of tough pigs.com. And yes, they will be portraying
- 1:32night and day. In this adorable little pageant,
- 1:35I know this, no visuals, but if you could see their great
- 1:37costumes, you'd get it. As always, these questions were
- 1:41written by me with help from that amazing Muppet resource
- 1:44Muppet. Wiki.
- 1:45And speaking of, let's agree to play fair today, please don't,
- 1:48look at Muppet Wiki, or any other resource while we're
- 1:51playing, even if you wrote that part of Muppet, Wiki Everyone
- 1:56likes ice cream but no one likes a cheater.
- 1:59So, Let's say hello and hola to our contestants with a game.
- 2:03I like to call to tell a face contestants buzz in to answer
- 2:10three questions about yourself. Whoever buzzes in first will get
- 2:15introduced first ready. Go Scott your first question.
- 2:21What is your name? My name is Scott Hanson.
- 2:24All right, that's 10 points, right there.
- 2:27Oh, I got it, right? So relieved, question 2, what's
- 2:31your history with the Muppets? Or with Sesame Street, what's
- 2:34your relationship there? Oh gosh.
- 2:36That's a, that's a long story. I'll try to keep it as brief as
- 2:40possible. I grew up with the Muppets like
- 2:43most of us did. It wasn't quite as cool when I
- 2:48was in high school. But I came back around to it.
- 2:51Especially when my daughter was born, I started getting back
- 2:53into the fandom. I was on the news groups online
- 2:56eventually just got into the thick of it with tough pigs.
- 3:01I was sort of like the the technical behind-the-scenes guy
- 3:04for for Danny. When tough pigs was started and
- 3:08sort of / research and then we decided to start Muppet Wiki
- 3:14together and here we are. Yeah.
- 3:17So what's your role on Muppet Wiki?
- 3:19These days pretty much the same is as it's been for about 15 and
- 3:23a half years. Now, I mean, we have a we have a
- 3:27good group of admins or sort of run the team, terrific group of
- 3:33editors, who have come and gone over the years, past few years,
- 3:38we've been really working on building up our Sesame Street
- 3:42episode guides from the, from the early years, which I know
- 3:44will be a focus tonight and yeah, just try Document,
- 3:49everything that can has never did.
- 3:52All right, and your last question, and the most important
- 3:55question, who's your favorite Sesame Street Muppet from the
- 3:59show's early days, or at least your favorite Muppet today?
- 4:02Because I know that can change from day to day.
- 4:04Yeah, when I was a kid, Ernie was my favorite.
- 4:08I guess I just liked how silly and and it Reverend, he could be
- 4:13the older. I get the more I identify with
- 4:16Bert. So I guess I'll Have to go with
- 4:19Bert today. Alright, so Scott in total
- 4:23you've earned 20 points, this round.
- 4:26Whoo. Shane, let's up, each question
- 4:28is worth a different amount Shane.
- 4:30I know it doesn't divide evenly. So Shane, let me give you those
- 4:34questions. What's your name?
- 4:36Okay, my name is Shane Keating, judges, did I.
- 4:41Yes. Whoo.
- 4:43What's your history with the Muppets, or with Sesame Street?
- 4:47Any of those? You know, your With this with
- 4:49this universe. Yeah, I think like Scott said,
- 4:52it's pretty much kind of what everybody did.
- 4:55I grew up with it. I started watching Sesame
- 4:57Street, and then I think, because my Law Library, put
- 5:01Muppet capes on the same shelf as the Sesame tapes, that's how
- 5:04I was able to start seeing, like the Muppet movie and great
- 5:07Muppet, Caper, and then in the early 2000s, that's when I found
- 5:11all the websites, like tough pigs, and muppet Central and
- 5:14sesame 70s. They all.
- 5:15Remember that website and friend.
- 5:17Nope, nobody does. And then Then slowly after that.
- 5:21Thank you Janice Lee surprised that I don't because again, I
- 5:26was looking for that kind of stuff at the time.
- 5:29So it was just it was only about those two disco albums, they put
- 5:32out and that was it. I got one of them right over
- 5:36there. I can't reach it from my desk,
- 5:38but which one fever Sesame Street Fever.
- 5:41I have that one over there. Yeah.
- 5:45I wish I Sesame discos, a better album, but I digress.
- 5:49So after I found the websites, then I slowly started getting
- 5:52involved in them. So I'm on admin on Muppet Wiki
- 5:56and I'm contributor for tough pigs, and put a lot of stuff on
- 6:01YouTube from Sesame Street. And Yeah, I guess that's it.
- 6:06You've got Sesame Street famous for putting Sesame Street stuff
- 6:09on YouTube. I think, didn't you get an
- 6:12invite from? Oh, that's right.
- 6:15Should I tell? That means you can start if you
- 6:18want. So, so my channel Marshal Grover
- 6:22got called out by the Cookie Monster.
- 6:25When he did the Ice Bucket Challenge back in 2014.
- 6:29I remember that. And that was, that was like a
- 6:3124-hour thing of like, wait, is that me, did he mean, Wait, who
- 6:35does that does that mean what? I think it means.
- 6:38And yeah, that was really great. Pretty darn cool.
- 6:42Big ego boost. And and and Shane at least
- 6:47today, who's your favorite of the old-school Sesame Street
- 6:50characters? I mean, does it count if he's
- 6:53old school if he's still around? Yes.
- 6:55Yeah, I mean Bert is Oscar. The Grouch has always been my
- 7:00favorite. I have tons of Oscar things all
- 7:03around the room. Here, I've So many photos from
- 7:06like, Sesame Place of me and Oscar things around.
- 7:10And one of my most treasured things is that I have a drawing
- 7:14of Oscar from Caroll spinney, which is neat.
- 7:17That is really neat. All right.
- 7:19So Shane you also have 20 points and the score is tied.
- 7:24All right, as we move into round two, now that we've met the
- 7:28people in our neighborhood. Let's talk about those lovable
- 7:32Monsters of Sesame Street and all of their friends.
- 7:35It's a game that I call can you guess.
- 7:39Now everyone knows Bert and Ernie, and Big Bird and Oscar,
- 7:43and Grover and Cookie Monster. But can you identify these
- 7:47Sesame Street characters who maybe didn't appear on quite as
- 7:51much merchandise? Please, wait until I finish
- 7:54asking the question to buzz in. So our friends at home can play
- 7:57along each of these questions is worth one point.
- 8:01Question one, he gets his name from his original Design where
- 8:05he was a googly eyed television monster.
- 8:12Shane Telly monster. Correct.
- 8:16Question to this toothy monster might look and sound scary but
- 8:20he's very friendly and childlike, Shane.
- 8:28Oh, frazzle, correct. Question 3, this lovable, orange
- 8:34and white character was originally conceived as an
- 8:37acrobatic ape. Shane Berkeley.
- 8:45Correct question for. And this is I will pause and say
- 8:50one of my favorite things I've ever learned from Muppet Wiki
- 8:53coming up in question 4. According to early script notes,
- 8:59this character was originally called the Galapagos before
- 9:04getting an even longer named Scott.
- 9:12That's got to be Snuffleupagus. It is Snuffleupagus.
- 9:15According to Muppet Wiki, there is a season.
- 9:19What is it? Seasoned Therese grit season 3.
- 9:21Thank you. Was like two or three season 3
- 9:23script that has the note. Galapagos is now called the
- 9:28Snuffleupagus II. Don't know why.
- 9:31But just thinking of the word Galapagos makes me think of the
- 9:35Shane. You probably remember what year
- 9:37this was, but there was a, somebody submitted a sketch at
- 9:41some point for to introduce Snuffy's little brother.
- 9:45And he was just going to be like a two-legged no armed snuffle
- 9:49thing. I don't know if they gave me a
- 9:52different name, but now when I hear Galapagos, that's what I
- 9:55think of that drawer Drawing, he doesn't have a different name,
- 9:57and I know this because I tried really hard to figure out how to
- 10:01ask a question about Snuffy's little brother on this this
- 10:05episode, because again, there's again, great Muppet Wiki
- 10:09article, I'm going to be shouting out a lot of Muppet
- 10:11Wiki articles because I have two admins here with me and I wrote
- 10:15that one, the one on Snuffy's brother that also mentions other
- 10:20characters who were brainstormed at that time which includes a
- 10:25character I think. I think the show Absolutely
- 10:28needs which is Ernie and Bert sland Lord yes, or should I say
- 10:34landlady? Well, they've had, they had a
- 10:37superintendent, Karen Dura one point and then a building
- 10:40inspector and Maria became a superintendent in like season
- 10:45one of the Season 40s or T2. Okay.
- 10:49And they also established they said time and again that like,
- 10:52Gordon might own the building. So wouldn't he be the landlord
- 10:57if Gordon owns the building? Why does Gordon have to be a
- 11:00public school teacher? Let me tell you from experience.
- 11:07There is an episode early on where Gordon and mr.
- 11:12Hooper argue over who owns the carriage house and Gordon says,
- 11:17it's his because he owns one, two, three, Sesame Street, or
- 11:21something like that. And mr.
- 11:22Hooper owns Hooper's store. So it was in there somewhere
- 11:26that he owns the building. So I guess they're landlady is
- 11:30Susan then. Um, or Gordon with a wig.
- 11:34Yeah, question. N5, because he reacted to
- 11:38failure by Smashing his head against a piano writers were
- 11:41concerned that this Muppet would be a bad influence.
- 11:49Scott Gone music. It is done music.
- 11:52Who recently appeared in the most recent season of Sesame
- 11:57Street, still Erik doing them. He didn't speak question six.
- 12:02Although he stopped making new appearances on the show in 1975.
- 12:07He was once so popular that he got Sesame Street's first album
- 12:11focused on a single character. Shane Roosevelt Franklin
- 12:20correct. I have that album to don't have
- 12:24that one. I it's something that I'm
- 12:26definitely looking for question 7 despite appearing alongside
- 12:31big bird as early as season 1. He was finally confirmed to be
- 12:35Big Bird's cousin in season 50. Scott little bird correct, Scott
- 12:46Shane do you remember the name of little birds teddy bear from
- 12:50that episode Walter? Mmm, I knew it because it's also
- 12:55named after a mesh character. Did you know that the was Ice
- 13:00Follies? They did a sort of another take
- 13:05on a smaller big bird with a just call them small bird.
- 13:09I And that sounds terrifying. Yeah, look it up.
- 13:13It's pretty bizarre. I will question 8, according to
- 13:19the Sesame Street, bedtime storybook.
- 13:22This character lives next door, to the counts Castle.
- 13:30Scott the amazing Mumford. Correct question, 9 Caroll
- 13:35spinney. Not only performed this usually
- 13:38silent Muppet but he designed him.
- 13:45Shane Bruno. Correct question 10.
- 13:50The final question in this round, Frank Oz hated playing
- 13:53this character because of his loud laughter, that was
- 13:56difficult on Frank's throat. Scott, our beanie slobber
- 14:06correct. Harvey knee-slapper.
- 14:10You know, I wonder if they'll ever release a harvey
- 14:12knee-slapper toy but I wouldn't count on it.
- 14:16But what I will count on is our next game, which we call the,
- 14:20how many game Sesame Street taught us?
- 14:23All that counting is wonderful and that kids like you and me
- 14:26were born to add in this game. I'm going to ask you to remember
- 14:31some numbers that We've seen on Sesame Street.
- 14:35Now, this game has a bit of a trick to it, though.
- 14:37All right. You know, how on Jeopardy, you
- 14:39have to answer a certain way or else you don't get points.
- 14:43You have to say, like, who is granny?
- 14:46Fanny nesselrode, or what is a cabbage?
- 14:52This game works similar exactly what you would hear on Jeopardy.
- 14:58Listen, I haven't watched Jeopardy in a while and, you
- 15:02know, Levar. Burton isn't the host.
- 15:04So I'm not about to start. I only watched shows that
- 15:07feature people who also appeared on PBS.
- 15:10So, so this in this game, obviously, all of the answers
- 15:14are going to be numbers, but for no reason at all, I'm going to
- 15:19ask you to surround that number with a couple other words.
- 15:23I'm going to ask you to say. So let's say the question was,
- 15:26how many eyes does Grover have? And the answer is 2.
- 15:29I'm going to ask you to say, I too.
- 15:33The sandbox you're going to say, I before the number and then the
- 15:39sandbox after the number, where could this be leading Evan?
- 15:43I don't know. There's no reason that I run the
- 15:46game. This way, there's no reason.
- 15:48Um, what's your endgame? I don't know.
- 15:51I just I like sandboxes Scott. So as always, please wait to
- 15:56buzz in until I finished the question question 1.
- 16:00The number of toes on Big Bird's foot.
- 16:03Foot. Shane.
- 16:09I'ii the sandbox. Correct question to the highest
- 16:14number The Pointer Sisters singing in the pinball.
- 16:17Number count, Shane. I 12 the sandbox.
- 16:25Correct question, 3, the number of chocolate layer cakes.
- 16:30That the baker drops down the stairs.
- 16:37Scott I tend to said box correct now, there's so many of those
- 16:44Baker films. How do you how do you remember
- 16:46which one has what I can only remember 10?
- 16:51What one is a wedding cake? And that's, that's easy to
- 16:53remember because it's one. Yeah, you really couldn't carry
- 16:56more than one of those to begin with question for the number of
- 17:03rubies, that the alligator King breaks his teeth on.
- 17:11Shane said well i7 the sandbox. Nice save almost blew it.
- 17:21Question 5, according to the Jeff Moss album numbers, it's
- 17:25Bert's favorite Scott. I6 the sandbox.
- 17:36Correct. Question, six.
- 17:38I should have made the last one. Question 6.
- 17:39But maybe that would have given it away.
- 17:42Give It Away. Question 6 the counts license
- 17:48plate number in Follow That Bird.
- 17:55Scott. I 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8, 9 0 the
- 18:00sandbox incorrect Shane. Can you steal?
- 18:04I'm gonna say I one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,
- 18:08nine, ten, the sandbox correct. Ah, Curse your she.
- 18:16I had to that dump. Don't blame me.
- 18:18Blame the Department of Motor Vehicles.
- 18:22That's too many numbers for a license plate so that way that's
- 18:24legal. He's a vampire.
- 18:27Yeah, they can't catch him. He's the Living Dead.
- 18:32Question 7. The number of months old that
- 18:36Oscars newspaper is in. I love trash Shane.
- 18:44I 13 the sandbox. Correct question, 8 in a song
- 18:50Prairie Dawn tells us that she can tie her shoes all by herself
- 18:54because she is this many years old, Shane. 6.
- 19:03The sandbox correct. Well, that's two sixes at.
- 19:07You should have made for. Number six, that's true.
- 19:11Question 9 the number of years after Sesame Street's debut that
- 19:17The Monster at the End of This Book was released.
- 19:24Scott. I to the sandbox.
- 19:27Correct. And only one year after Grover
- 19:30started appearing, on the show. And then the last question of
- 19:33this round question, 10 until the birth of his youngest
- 19:38daughter. Everything in this famous kings,
- 19:41kingdom had to Total this number, Scott.
- 19:50I ate the sandbox. Really.
- 19:52How did it taste delicious? I'll have to look into that.
- 19:58Yeah, caress got I was not going to fall for that.
- 20:07All right. Well, speaking of numbers.
- 20:10Let's check the scores real quick.
- 20:12So, right now Scott, you have 29 Points and Shane you have 31
- 20:20points. So it's a very close game.
- 20:23I 31 the sandbox, correct. All right, now it's time for our
- 20:29head-to-head round that we call be the time in this round.
- 20:34The rules are a little different.
- 20:35I'm going to ask you a question. 12, correct, answers, starting
- 20:40with Scott. You are going to give me an
- 20:43answer to that question after you answer, we're going to jump
- 20:47to Shan Shan you're going to give me an answer to the
- 20:50question. If you guys can't answer it
- 20:54bounces to the next person. If you take too long to answer
- 20:58it bounces to the next person. Now I'll tell you normally on
- 21:03this show I can be kind of lenient with things taking too
- 21:06long. Long.
- 21:07But again I'm dealing with you guys and I know you guys know
- 21:11all of the answers to this is my theory because I know you too.
- 21:17So I'm going to be. I'm gonna hold you guys to that.
- 21:20That time limit. We're going to we're going to
- 21:22try to go. Go fast with this.
- 21:25All right, the pressures on. So, when I was writing these
- 21:28questions, I decided that I was going to end this old-school,
- 21:33Sesame Street era in 1985, and I chose that because that's the
- 21:38year that Follow That Bird was released Sesame.
- 21:41Street's first theatrical movie. Now, for those who haven't seen
- 21:45it and you should watch it, it's a wonderful film and it's on HBO
- 21:49Max. I believe at the moment or on a
- 21:51DVD with Elmo on the Cover. Despite the fact that he is in
- 21:55five frames of that movie, if you haven't seen it, the plot of
- 22:00this movie is that big bird is sent away and the rest of the
- 22:07Sesame Street characters have to find him specifically by my
- 22:11count 12, Sesame Street, characters hit the road looking
- 22:16for Big Bird. Starting with Scott name a
- 22:21character who looks for big bird in the film?
- 22:25Follow That Bird. Scott Cookie Monster correct.
- 22:30Shane. Olivia.
- 22:33Correct. Scott Susan.
- 22:36I don't think Susan is in one of the cars.
- 22:39She's not. I'm using is not now.
- 22:41Okay? So That's right.
- 22:45She's she receives the the Volkswagen that at the end when
- 22:49it comes back. Hmm.
- 22:51Okay. Yeah, right.
- 22:52Sorry, it took me a second because I was like, wait, am I
- 22:54wrong? I'm like irie.
- 22:56Irie. Watch this before, I guess we'll
- 22:59just have to start all over again.
- 23:01Okay, so we're gonna jump then back to shame.
- 23:06A Honker. Good Scott Gordon.
- 23:11Correct. Shane Journey.
- 23:14Correct Scott. I guess I'll go with Bert.
- 23:18Correct. The same Super Grover.
- 23:22Correct Scott is Grover counts as a separate calendars.
- 23:29That is the same characteristic a Grover.
- 23:32I hate to break this to you and I'm sorry.
- 23:34But that's Grover is really a store, knob salesman Grover
- 23:39monster, okay? But have you ever seen them in
- 23:41the same room together at the same time?
- 23:45Yes. I have a plastic toy of each of
- 23:48them on my bookshelf. Fair enough.
- 23:50All right. I'll go with Oscar.
- 23:51The Grouch then, okay. Shane Telly.
- 23:55Monster correct Scott Maria. Correct Shane Gordon.
- 24:05I'm sorry. Scott has already said Gordon.
- 24:07So we're going to bounce back to Scott.
- 24:10Linda. Correct.
- 24:12And Shane. This is the last character
- 24:15account, correct. There we go.
- 24:19All right. Um, You Reach got six of them.
- 24:22Well, if you thought this was just an easygoing day, don't
- 24:26worry, things are about to get harder because it's time for my
- 24:29favorite game. The triangle is, right?
- 24:32So in this game, it's a little harder than guy Smiley's
- 24:35version. Every answer is going to be a
- 24:37triangle no in this game. Every answer has every question,
- 24:41has three correct answers, and you can score one point for
- 24:47each, right? Answer buzz in.
- 24:49Even if you don't know all three answers because you'll still get
- 24:54points for whichever ones, you get correct.
- 24:56However, your opponent will have the chance to steal and clean up
- 25:01whatever you missed. As always wait.
- 25:04Until my question is complete to buzz in, So question 1, the
- 25:08three blue monsters joined by frazzle in fuzzy and blue.
- 25:18Scott Grover Cookie Monster and hairy monster.
- 25:23Correct. Question to the three human main
- 25:27characters, who appeared in the first episode of Sesame Street
- 25:31and were not recast. Scott.
- 25:40Loretta long is Susan. Will lie as mr.
- 25:44Hooper and Bob McGrath is Bob correct or Bob Johnson if you
- 25:50want to be formal question, 3, the three colors on births
- 25:58shirt, Shane. Green blue, yellow.
- 26:08Okay, you got two, green and blue are correct.
- 26:11Scott, Can you steal the last color, white?
- 26:14You know, I wasn't counting white as a color.
- 26:16All right, then Morgan. Look, I'll give you, I'll give
- 26:19you a point for white, and I'll give you a point for the correct
- 26:22answer or inch. These are important points.
- 26:25Here's what we're saying? Yes, question for the three
- 26:30performers who have performed. Warmed, the voice of mr.
- 26:34Snuffleupagus. Shane.
- 26:41Jerry Nelson. Michael Earl, and Marty
- 26:44Robinson. Correct question. 5 the three
- 26:49new recurring, Jerry, Nelson. Characters added in season 4 Sky
- 27:01the count, mr. Blackwell the count is 1 so you
- 27:04will get one point for that. Shane, can you name the other
- 27:07two Sam? The Robot correct.
- 27:12Nope, I got nothing. Roxy Marie is going to be very
- 27:15disappointed in you guys. It's it's Biff question six the
- 27:21three monotones who accompanied little Jerry Shane big Jeffy
- 27:32Rock and Richard and Chrissy. Correct and question 7,
- 27:36excluding the show's pilot, the three actors who played Gordon.
- 27:46Scott. Matt Robinson, Roscoe Orman and
- 27:52which is this is the hard one? This is the hard one so I don't
- 27:55want to say the first met well as Shane knows it, it's all like
- 27:58I'm giving anything away. It's it's hell, something same,
- 28:04hell Miller correct. I gave that to you.
- 28:07You didn't know how we'll just remember Miller, I give you the
- 28:10whole thing. Well, arguably arguably, the
- 28:13hardest one to name is the one from the pilot because it's that
- 28:17too. Like 47 years for us to name.
- 28:21But Garrett, Garrett Saunders, I think.
- 28:24All right, speaking of the triangle is, right?
- 28:26And games that make Prairie, Dawn frustrated, we're going to
- 28:29move on to our final normal round.
- 28:32What's prairies problem, as we all know the world is made up of
- 28:36chaos. Muppets like Ernie and Grover.
- 28:39And Cookie Monster and Order Muppets like Bert and Kermit,
- 28:43and Prairie Dawn in this tribute to that ongoing battle, I am
- 28:48going to describe a classic Sesame Street sketch, you have
- 28:52to describe the punchline. That settles the order, Muppets
- 28:57problem. So as an example, just so, you
- 29:00know what I mean, if I said, Ernie is walking around with a
- 29:04banana in his ear. Bird has a problem with this in
- 29:07complaints Ernie. You would say, can't hear Bert
- 29:12because he has a banana and easier, right?
- 29:14I'm not looking for like specific words, obviously, you
- 29:17Don't have to give the specific line, but you do have to
- 29:20describe what happens to end this battle between Order and
- 29:25Chaos, gotcha. So remember, we're going to try
- 29:27to keep some order around here so buzz in after I finish the
- 29:31question. And remember each of these
- 29:33questions is worth one point? Question, 1.
- 29:38Ernie makes a sculpture of Bert's face but bird has a
- 29:41problem with it Ernie fixes the problem by Scott removing
- 29:51Burke's nose and placing it on the sculpture.
- 29:54Correct. Question to mr.
- 29:57Johnson is very hungry. So he orders a small hamburger,
- 30:01it's not enough. So Grover solves the problem by
- 30:04bringing him Shane a big hamburger.
- 30:13I think you're getting it by putting emphasis on the word
- 30:16big. How big we talking twice the
- 30:19size of the table or if not more.
- 30:21Yeah, just for the audience at home.
- 30:24Just I knew you knew question 3 Ernie and Bert aren't catching
- 30:29any fish Ernie solves. This problem by Scott chanting
- 30:40into the water. Hey, fishy, fishy.
- 30:42Fishy fishy. Correct question for.
- 30:45It's nighttime and Ernie needs to know what time it is.
- 30:49Bert tells him to go back to sleep, but Ernie solves the
- 30:52problem by Shane. He sings O solo Mio off-key
- 31:03outside the apartment Window and then people shouted him and tell
- 31:06him what time it is. I'm going to throw this out
- 31:10there for an extra point. What time was it 3:00 in the
- 31:13morning? Correct.
- 31:17Just because I have that written down questions bit it is
- 31:22question. 5 Grover wants to sell Kermit earmuffs but Kermit has
- 31:26no ears Grover solves this by Scott, giving him years, giving
- 31:36him ears. naturally question 6, hairy monster and Cookie Monster
- 31:43are fighting over a bicycle Kermit steps in to teach them
- 31:46about cooperation and then they Shane share the bicycle by
- 31:56eating it. Correct and the last question on
- 31:59this round and for this one, I am looking for specific wording.
- 32:03Kermit wants to talk about rectangles Cookie Monster steps
- 32:07in to help and crushes curve. Its rectangle.
- 32:10This is a good solution because as cookie says it's now, Shane.
- 32:20It's now it's a wreck and at angle correct her wrecked as we
- 32:29got, thank you. All right, we're coming up on
- 32:33the end of the show, but now the points are even bigger because
- 32:37this is the anything in the world prize game, and we call it
- 32:42that because you two are able to ask me.
- 32:45Anything in the world or at least anything in the world of
- 32:49Sesame Street. Pre-1985, if you can stop me,
- 32:53you will earn 10 points. So let's start with Scott.
- 32:58Scott's you have a question for me.
- 33:00Anything in the world. Yeah.
- 33:02So what I'm going to do is I'm going to give you a list of
- 33:07eight characters and you have to tell me which ones Jim Henson
- 33:12never performed. So I wrote These out of my
- 33:14screen, I'll I'll share my screen with you just so you can
- 33:17see the list of them here. Yeah, I'll read them for the,
- 33:21I'll read them for the yeah. I'll read them all.
- 33:23But this is, this is just for you.
- 33:24Yeah, yeah, yeah. On this list of eight
- 33:27characters, tell me which one's Jim Henson never performed.
- 33:31So, we've got Elmo Grover, Little Bird, Big Bird Oscar, the
- 33:37Grouch granny fanny nesselrode, tammela Grandeur fall, and
- 33:42Farley So you can choose as many as you want, make your
- 33:47selections and then when you've got your selections, I'll go
- 33:51through the list and tell you how you did, okay?
- 33:54So just to just to talk through things a little bit, I do want
- 33:57to just clarify. Are we talking about performed
- 34:01on like released episodes of Sesame Street?
- 34:05Or are we including things like okay?
- 34:07Like yep, I uh yeah this is this isn't like behind the scenes
- 34:10photo ops this is this is Like guest appearances on somebody
- 34:17else's show. This, this is, this is proper
- 34:19episodes of Sesame. Yeah.
- 34:21Because there's like the legend that like, he Jim was,
- 34:24originally supposed to be burped and I know Bert isn't on this
- 34:27list but like, Jim was supposed to be burped and Frank was
- 34:30supposed to be a journey and it wasn't working, so they changed
- 34:33it. But like, yeah.
- 34:34So just making sure it wasn't like a story like that, that I
- 34:37had forgotten. Okay.
- 34:38So, looking at the list right now on, we've got Elmo, Grover,
- 34:42little bird, Big Bird. Oscar granny, fanny nesselrode,
- 34:47Tamela, grindle grinder. Taman, Ella grinder, fall, and
- 34:52Farley. And I do just want to say, as an
- 34:54aside I'm glad you managed to get Farley and granny fanny
- 34:59nesselrode into this, this game. I know I mentioned granny fanny
- 35:03a little bit but I was trying to write a Farley question and let
- 35:06me tell you there is nothing interesting about Farley so I
- 35:10cannot ask a question about him. Or Farley.
- 35:15He's got, he's got one good song.
- 35:17It's is there some love? It's worth noting, and this is
- 35:20an aside and then I will get to actually trying to solve your
- 35:22question. So I was playing some of my
- 35:25records the other day and I forget, which one I was
- 35:29listening to, which of the Sesame records, but Farley had a
- 35:34verse in a song or something like that.
- 35:37And my partner was like, who is that?
- 35:41I'm like, that's that's Charlie. He, you know, and and and they
- 35:46were like, what is Farley do? And I'm like, nothing and that's
- 35:51why he wasn't on the show very long because like you you listen
- 35:56to those old albums and it's like all the characters.
- 35:59It was always like the most recognizable characters,
- 36:01obviously, and then like occasionally Farley would have a
- 36:04voice in like here in the middle of my imagination or something.
- 36:09Harley was the the king of generic Muppet, boys.
- 36:13It's like I mean Farley is like Betty Lou basically but sure
- 36:18that's very well with more the more consistent performer,
- 36:20that's true. But the difference is they
- 36:23needed more female characters. So Betty Lou showed up more
- 36:26often, alright? So looking at this list and we
- 36:30are including fuzzy face as Grover.
- 36:32I assume. Sure.
- 36:34Okay, okay, I'm probably wrong but I am going to guess here,
- 36:39right? I'm guessing of these eight
- 36:41characters Elmo grow. Over Little Bird, Big Bird Oscar
- 36:46granny, fanny nesselrode, Tama TOA, grinder fall and Farley.
- 36:53I'm guessing four of these have been performed by Jim Henson.
- 36:57And I'm guessing little bird who I know for a fact was performed
- 37:01by Jim Henson, at least, once that's the one that I know
- 37:05Granny, Taman, Ella, and Farley. Okay?
- 37:10Those are your those, your final answers.
- 37:12Those are my final answer. There's okay, so you're correct
- 37:16that for of these were performed by Jim Henson.
- 37:19Wow, I'm impressed that I got even that right.
- 37:22You four of them. He did not of the of the for
- 37:27that. You chose to are correct.
- 37:29Okay, so so I'm going to go through the first four that he
- 37:34did perform. This might be interesting for
- 37:37the listeners because some of this stuff is information that
- 37:40was kind of lost for a really long time.
- 37:43We only really kind of recently dug it up.
- 37:46So the the first one on the list that Jim Henson did perform is
- 37:50Oscar the Grouch he performed Oscar in an episode of Sesame
- 37:56Street. This was broadcast, this is not
- 37:58a special aside thing, it was an episode 84.
- 38:04And it also happens to be an episode that featured one of the
- 38:09three appearances by Rufus the dog, which but fans might know,
- 38:13From other Muppet projects. But but he did perform Oscar.
- 38:18I'm frustrated because I know I read that Muppet Wiki article
- 38:21because I vaguely. Remember you Tweeting that there
- 38:24had been episodes found of Sesame Street, that featured
- 38:27Rufus. And I was like, I gotta read
- 38:29about that, so, yeah. Hey, okay.
- 38:32So Oscar is one. Yep.
- 38:34That's one. The other one is Grover or
- 38:37that's a little bit of a cheat, because he wasn't quite Grover
- 38:39yet, he's was what fans have come.
- 38:43Um, to to call fuzzyface, the article on the wiki that we have
- 38:48for him. We're actually Chronicle as
- 38:50Proto Grover, but Jim Henson performed him in the very first
- 38:55near and far sketch, which, of course, Grover would become
- 38:59famous for. I've seen that.
- 39:01See, this is the thing like, now, I'm just frustrated.
- 39:05Yep, it's a good one. The other ones.
- 39:08So you got, you got this one. Correct, granny fanny
- 39:11nesselrode, Jim played. Any in her very first
- 39:15appearance. And then it mostly became Caroll
- 39:19spinney and then they think Jim played them one completer, maybe
- 39:23once or twice again, after that, it was primarily a Caroll
- 39:27spinney character. But you did.
- 39:29I mean if she kind of disappeared by like, what's
- 39:31these? Yes, six likes.
- 39:32Right? Nobody remembers her anyway, so
- 39:34it doesn't matter but and the fourth one that he did play was
- 39:38of course you got this one right as well was little bird who he
- 39:42first established. It's a couple of years before or
- 39:46the year. Before says, I'm sure you know,
- 39:47easy bake, oven commercial. He did the first two
- 39:51performances of little bird on the show.
- 39:54And then it mostly became friend Brill and Evan for some bonus
- 39:59points for you that don't matter because this is your thing.
- 40:02Yeah. Can you name three performers,
- 40:07who, who did little birds? That weren't friend role after
- 40:11that point. So I can name One.
- 40:14Right? Because Stephanie debris.
- 40:17So did him in season 50. Okay well alright so that's fair
- 40:22I was mostly keeping within the realm of the old sleep period.
- 40:25Okay was it Stephanie in season 50 or am I wrong?
- 40:29No, you're right. That was okay.
- 40:30Yeah, I figured because she does the friend bro, let me shoot as
- 40:33Prairie Dawn, it's the same kind of voice.
- 40:35Um, okay, Jerry Nelson, must have been little bird once but
- 40:41that's a guess that is correct. That's just because Jerry Nelson
- 40:44just did every like did everything he was like just the
- 40:48go to do anything. Um Caroll spinney, probably did
- 40:53him once that is also correct. And then the third one, I'm
- 40:57going to guess is like someone who I have no idea of it's like
- 41:02Brian meal or something. Yeah, I would if this had been
- 41:06posed to me and I didn't know it from the wiki, I wouldn't have
- 41:09guessed it either. It was Bob pain.
- 41:10Yeah, I knew it wasn't like Frank Oz or anything and you
- 41:15know, where Richard I would have remembered that.
- 41:17But yeah. Okay.
- 41:19Bob pain. All right, so so so the for so
- 41:21the four that were no. Also have some some interesting.
- 41:24Please that please your the audience, the audience loves
- 41:27this stuff and I love. So the four that were on the
- 41:30list that Jim Henson never performed were Elmo which as we
- 41:35all know, was originally performed by Brian meal who I
- 41:39was surprised to learn when we started digging into the stuff.
- 41:42He actually performed Elmo for five years and Richard Hunt only
- 41:46performed him for half a season and then of course, Kevin Clash
- 41:51took him over and made him famous.
- 41:53Did we did we check the dates and found find out that Richard
- 41:57only did him for like three weeks.
- 41:59Yeah. Yeah, it's so so as Aired.
- 42:02It's a little bit less than half a season, but yeah, we ended up
- 42:05figuring out. We look at the production dates
- 42:07and Richard actually only ever played Elmo for like two or
- 42:10three weeks or something like that.
- 42:12We just playing who's playing Elmo in.
- 42:14We are all monsters that Jerry Nelson stereo.
- 42:18Oh oh okay. I was like I don't think it's
- 42:20either of them but and and contrary to these, you know,
- 42:26several times he told the story. But we have proven that he just
- 42:30misremembered, it was thinking of it.
- 42:31Different character. Caroll spinney.
- 42:33Never played no mo. I won't get into those details
- 42:38here, but there's a, there's an article on the wiki.
- 42:41I would look at the Proto Elmo article and also look at the
- 42:44baby Monster article. But anyway, kind of interesting.
- 42:49The next one on the list that Jim Henson never performed was
- 42:52with big bird. Although he Big Bird was
- 42:55performed by somebody other than Caroll spinney on an episode of
- 43:00Sesame Street and I was Daniel Seagram.
- 43:03It was filmed. I think it was either the Same
- 43:05day or like that same week that Jim played Oscar because Carrie
- 43:10Carol was sick that week. I don't know if it lines up with
- 43:15when they filmed the Ed Sullivan stuff.
- 43:16But Daniel secret also performed Big Bird on that show.
- 43:20Is that how you pronounce his last name?
- 43:22I've never known. See Grand?
- 43:24Never, I've never heard it spoken.
- 43:27Yeah, I'm just kind of guessing, I've never heard it spoken
- 43:29either, it looks like it's esea GRE MC grad.
- 43:34So Anyway, the other one was at mL of render fall, which was
- 43:41kind of a, I think, too. You know, most fans might be
- 43:44like, what do you talk about sort of Sesame Street character?
- 43:46Well, we recently discovered again, with from the past year
- 43:48or two. She made a very minor appearance
- 43:52on Sesame Street. We were all very surprised to
- 43:55see your show up and she's she was performed not by her usual,
- 44:00performer, Geri Jewell, but by Frank Oz in this in the spot.
- 44:06It's a very weird one too, wasn't it?
- 44:08She was like, in a group of monsters, right?
- 44:11Because I know I was reading about this on Muppet Wiki, yeah.
- 44:14Like, like, one of those sketches were like beautiful day
- 44:17monster and scotch and Fred, and his son would just like stand
- 44:21behind a wall and look at a letter.
- 44:23It was like one of those, right. Except it just also had ten
- 44:26Mandela in it. Yeah.
- 44:28And finally the last one was Farley who aside from a very
- 44:33brief laugh from Richard Hunt of us.
- 44:35Song It's funny for Ali was always Jerry Nelson.
- 44:39So there you go. Nicely nicely done?
- 44:42Yeah, no, that was a great question.
- 44:43I gave you a 10 points because even though I got half that
- 44:48still, I got it wrong and that was some good stuff.
- 44:52And again, I mean, I'm sure everybody listening to this
- 44:54looks at Muppet Wiki from time to time.
- 44:56But again, the reason I wanted Scott and Shane on this is the
- 45:00work that they've both been doing, you know, along with
- 45:03other people. But regarding the old All Sesame
- 45:06stuff has been incredible lately.
- 45:08The amount of just things that have surfaced and again, it's
- 45:13tough. It's tough to find this stuff
- 45:15obviously because there's how many total episodes of Sesame
- 45:18Street, so, we're 4500. Yeah.
- 45:21Yeah. Well, it's it's wild because,
- 45:24you know, you think of, you know, when the internet started,
- 45:26what did fans do for the first time?
- 45:28They started making lists of things and if you were, if you
- 45:31were Star Trek fan there was you know, a finite amount of Star
- 45:34Trek episodes. To write about if you were an
- 45:37X-Files fan you just you know they are all readily available
- 45:40but for the majority of its history, thousands of episodes
- 45:46of Sesame Street are have just been completely inaccessible.
- 45:50So we've been building. What is really the only?
- 45:55The first and only Sesame Street episode guide.
- 45:58And this is some really interesting stuff that you can,
- 46:01you can find in those pages. Shane, do you have a question to
- 46:04try to stump me? I do mine is also a character
- 46:09list based thing that's fine. We're not does, it's not going
- 46:14to be too to say, me look as long as your question isn't
- 46:18literally which of these 8-bit characters who are performed by
- 46:23Jim Henson. I'm cool with it.
- 46:26Okay. Are you ready?
- 46:27Yes. All right.
- 46:30So in episode 17 33 in season 14, we see a flashback to Susan
- 46:39and Gordon's wedding out in the arbor.
- 46:42Can you name three people? Muppets are humans that were in
- 46:47attendance at that wedding I'll give you three you can have if
- 46:51you get any right. You're good.
- 46:54If you get three wrong, you're out.
- 46:56Oh okay. So I'll give you three strikes.
- 46:59That's this is fun. Okay, I do think I remember
- 47:03seeing a picture of this again in my mother Wiki travels Susan
- 47:08and Gordon. Don't count obviously.
- 47:09Yeah. Okay.
- 47:10That would be way too easy or the minister.
- 47:13Fair. I wouldn't consider that to be a
- 47:15character. It was gone do, right?
- 47:17Yeah. Dave, goals, making one of his
- 47:21few Sesame Street appearances, who that would have been a good
- 47:24trivia question. That's, that's later says me
- 47:26though. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:28His first character is, of course Horatio the elephant
- 47:31before he was named. Horatio the elephant.
- 47:33But yes! Anyway, um, okay, this is a
- 47:38weird one, but I'm actually going to start with a weird one.
- 47:40Ok Telly monster. No.
- 47:44Okay so that's one strike. I was sure that it would be
- 47:48something like but Telly wouldn't have been on Sesame
- 47:51Street at that point. Like you were going to you know
- 47:54do this as a Twist. Well actually no.
- 48:01Uncle Wally. Strike two.
- 48:04Okay, man, I should just be guessing like normal characters,
- 48:09um, Oscar Oscar was there. Okay, that's one.
- 48:15Okay. Okay, I'm still alive.
- 48:17One more to go. You got, well, you got one more
- 48:20strike, or two more correct answers.
- 48:23I would hope Bob was there strike three?
- 48:28All right man. All right, I can't believe Bob
- 48:32got snubbed like okay Uncle Wally sure Telly.
- 48:38I mean technically he didn't even exist when gorgeous is a
- 48:40got married. But he just wasn't on the call
- 48:45sheet that day. That's all he was too busy
- 48:48watching television at that time.
- 48:49Here's everyone who was there, okay?
- 48:52So you have Oscar. Hmm, Maria mr.
- 48:56Macintosh Willie, the hot dog, man.
- 49:01Of course, you know Bob but Willie the hot dog, man.
- 49:05Well, he had to sell hot dogs at the wedding.
- 49:07He was catering, if Sully was on the organ and then there was
- 49:13like four kids but I wanted if there were only three Muppets
- 49:18and they were Oscar Biff and Sully.
- 49:21Yes, And of those characters, only Oscar lived on Sesame
- 49:30Street. When that flashback would have
- 49:33been, I guess? Yeah.
- 49:35Maria wasn't around yet. Yeah.
- 49:37Because we assume Gordon and Susan got married before.
- 49:40Season one, right there, husband and wife.
- 49:43They're presented as husband wife and season one.
- 49:45Yeah, so all of those other characters were added in like
- 49:49season 3 or later. I think Willie was around in
- 49:54season 2, but they didn't give him a name yet, but yeah, yeah.
- 49:57Okay weird, good luck? Yeah, no, that's fair.
- 50:01All right, so Shane you get 10 points as well.
- 50:06Jolly good, bringing our score. As we move into the final round,
- 50:12this is very close. So the suspense is killing me.
- 50:16I'm just happy to be here as we move in to the final round.
- 50:21This wasn't the final round. No, stumping me was not the
- 50:23final round. Oh, it was the penultimate
- 50:27round. Our final round is the
- 50:30high-stakes game. We call say the word in this
- 50:34round. You can wager any amount of
- 50:37points, right? I'm going to ask a question and
- 50:41then you will be able to bet any number of points.
- 50:44And answer the question. It works the same as Final
- 50:47Jeopardy, except Final, Jeopardy isn't the name of a Cess Ami
- 50:52Street game show. So I did not use it.
- 50:55So again, you can wager any number of points.
- 50:57Well, how many points do you each have Scott, you have 59
- 51:03points and Shane, you have 62 points, very narrow.
- 51:11So, unlike Final Jeopardy. I will ask the question before
- 51:15you guys bet your points. So, I'm going to ask the
- 51:18question now. Merchandise has always been a
- 51:21big part Of Sesame Street or at least, not at first, but pretty
- 51:27quickly after the show began, weirdly enough, not counting
- 51:31puppets, which often were released as being part cloth and
- 51:37part rubber. The first true Sesame Street,
- 51:41stuffed animals were released in 1975 and were a trio of
- 51:47ragdolls. One of them was earning.
- 51:50One of them was Burt, but there were three characters.
- 51:54Released, who was the third Sesame Street character released
- 52:00as a rag doll in 1975. This is top.
- 52:08I feel like it's one of two and I can't decide we have to wager
- 52:13within the points that we have. Or can we you how you can only
- 52:16wager what you? I wager 1 million that I've
- 52:19gotta say, I can I wager like 5 billion points?
- 52:22Yeah, you can only wager up to 62.
- 52:24Shame? Okay.
- 52:26Come on. I thought you would know
- 52:27numbers. Okay?
- 52:31Okay. So you guys have each submitted
- 52:33an answer. Shane you bet 44 points.
- 52:38Yeah, got you bet 59 points. You bet the farm.
- 52:42All my points. Shane.
- 52:44Would you like to share with us? What you wrote?
- 52:47I wrote Big Bird Scott. Would you like to share with us?
- 52:53What you wrote now that really. All right.
- 52:58I will I will yeah big bird was my the other side of what I was
- 53:03going to guess. Yes, but I went with Grover.
- 53:06All right, Shane. Just out of curiosity.
- 53:08Was there another one that you were considering was it Grover?
- 53:12No. Okay.
- 53:13It was, it was Mumford. It was Mumford.
- 53:16Yeah, I hate to break this to you guys.
- 53:20Neither of those are the right answer to this question.
- 53:23If you say Farley, I'm gonna lose it, so it's not Farley, but
- 53:28it is a muppet. I mentioned in the context of
- 53:30Farley, is it? Betty Lou.
- 53:32It is Betty Lou. Oh wow!
- 53:35The first three, Sesame Street, plushies, excluding puppets.
- 53:39And again, those puppets weren't Ali, very cuddly.
- 53:42If you know, those old Sesame Street puppets, they were like
- 53:45half a rubber, the first three Sesame, Street plush toys were
- 53:49Ernie. Bert, and Betty Lou.
- 53:53So this is going to be a trick. Question, considering the points
- 53:57you guys have BET our final scores.
- 54:00Now I have to do some math. Well, mines easy?
- 54:03Yeah. Scott you have zero points
- 54:07whoo-hoo. Wow.
- 54:08It's like were you even playing? I don't think your answer a
- 54:10single question. I slept in this whole thing.
- 54:13You've got your own name wrong, that's true.
- 54:18And Shane, you are today's Champion and today's toughest
- 54:23Pig with a score of 18 points. Whoo!
- 54:28Have I set a record yet for like the lowest winning score?
- 54:31Yes. All right.
- 54:34Congratulations Shane. You get your choice of prizes so
- 54:39you get to choose one of two prizes, right?
- 54:42The first is two tickets to the sleaze brother.
- 54:47Funfair and your second choice. And hold on, let me just it's an
- 54:52invisible gorilla. Know your second choice is these
- 54:56two matching, magnets of Guy, Smiley and Don music.
- 55:01I know they can't see them but man, those are so good.
- 55:04Well, let me weigh the options here on the one hand.
- 55:09If I go to the fun fair, I'll at least get to ride a ferris
- 55:12wheel. I'll see a blue bird of
- 55:14happiness. But they'll steal my apple and
- 55:18that's that's not cool. Weirdly enough everybody there
- 55:21is a twin watch the movie if you're not sure about this it
- 55:25happened. That's true, that's true.
- 55:26I don't have a twin. I don't think I'm allowed to go
- 55:29so by default. I guess I have to take the
- 55:32magnets. Well, these guys basically have
- 55:34a twin and it's each other. So yeah, I will.
- 55:39I will make sure that you get these magnets Shane and Scott,
- 55:43thank you so much for playing soldier.
- 55:46That brings us to the end of another one Scott Shane.
- 55:49Where can people find you? If you wish to be found Scott,
- 55:52let's start with you. I treat at Muppet Wiki.
- 55:56It's a great Twitter account. One of my one of my all-time
- 55:59favorites. Thank you.
- 56:00You always manage to somehow, find a way to tie, whatever the
- 56:04news of the day is into. I don't know, some sort of like
- 56:08calendar page from 1977. And it's great Shane.
- 56:14Where can people find you on the internet?
- 56:17I'm all over the place. So I have I have personal
- 56:22accounts if you want to follow those.
- 56:23I'm like Instagram and Twitter at sock drawer, which is s.
- 56:28Okay, drawer. I'm also sock drawer on
- 56:31letterboxed, which is something. I know that Ryan and Anthony
- 56:35have been mentioning and all of their podcast recently.
- 56:38I am not very, I'm not very good at it, but I am there.
- 56:42Want to follow and see me review movies poorly.
- 56:46I have to start all letterboxed because they do but like, I
- 56:51don't think anybody wants to know that.
- 56:53Literally all I'm watching is all nine Fast, and Furious
- 56:56movies back to back to back. Well, that's the last thing.
- 57:01I watched also, I run one Muppet ational shot on Twitter which
- 57:08you can follow at at one Muppet shot because Additional would
- 57:13not fit. Or Twitter feed.
- 57:16Thank you. Oh yeah, another wonderful one.
- 57:18Another the shots you know, remind me sometimes that we
- 57:22don't talk enough about how well this stuff is directed and
- 57:26staged and stuff like that. Like that, that shot you did
- 57:30recently when this was being recorded of Piggy and Kermit
- 57:34Piggy and Kermit sweating. And it was like, oh yeah, that's
- 57:36like that's right. Gorgeous shot that I never
- 57:38really think about being like such a gorgeous you know piece
- 57:41of camera where it's hard for me to find the balance between
- 57:44Gunshots that are like, legitimately have good Meson
- 57:48send and all that and then just utter nonsense visual gags like
- 57:52Bert with no, no sir. Yeah, so many good shots on
- 57:56that. It's a cinematic Masterpiece,
- 58:01that one, intermission. And Shane, of course, like we
- 58:06said, you're on tough pigs. You're one of the contributors
- 58:09there. That's right.
- 58:12And you you're also Being on Muppet Wiki.
