- 0:42Speaker 2: a skateboard legend, p rod Paul Rodriguez.
- 0:46Speaker 1: What's going down?
- 0:47Speaker 2: How you doing, buddy?
- 0:47Speaker 1: I'm doing lovely, man. Thank you for having me.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Yes, sir, man, you were like kind of like one
- 0:53Speaker 2: of the dudes who kind of like I feel like,
- 0:54Speaker 2: kicked the door down in terms of like what was
- 0:57Speaker 2: possible for skating because I feel like Nike and skateboarding
- 1:01Speaker 2: was so like just the idea of that being like
- 1:03Speaker 2: a real thing.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it was like it was pretty controversial at the
- 1:07Speaker 1: time when when I got on Nike. It was like
- 1:10Speaker 1: you got skaters being like super core, like fucked a,
- 1:15Speaker 1: this is our industry, Like we don't want the corporate,
- 1:17Speaker 1: corporate companies coming in, and so like it was like
- 1:20Speaker 1: a little bit of a a little bit of a
- 1:23Speaker 1: risky movie.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Yeah, because there's all these like shoe brands that are
- 1:26Speaker 3: just like yeah obviously at these DC or all the
- 1:30Speaker 3: core brands, and so they had this like grip on
- 1:33Speaker 3: the market and then ESB's come in.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean it was just like
- 1:39Speaker 1: a situation and I was like I have to see
- 1:42Speaker 1: what this is about, Like you know what I mean,
- 1:44Speaker 1: Like I grew up in the Michael Jordan era. Of course,
- 1:47Speaker 1: you know, I wanted to be like Mike. We all
- 1:49Speaker 1: wanted his shoes growing up. I just didn't never think
- 1:52Speaker 1: that skateboarding when I started. It's just not something I
- 1:56Speaker 1: thought I can dream about being one day being a
- 1:58Speaker 1: Nike Ethice and and and when they came knocking on
- 2:02Speaker 1: my door with that type of opportunity, man, I mean
- 2:04Speaker 1: I had to what year is this two thousand and four?
- 2:07Speaker 1: Damn man.
- 2:08Speaker 2: So you're sixteen at.
- 2:09Speaker 4: The time, nineteen nineteen, okay, So like back then, like
- 2:13Speaker 4: obviously skate magazines are big, and then like there'd be
- 2:16Speaker 4: all these like vhs is that people would buy, and shit,
- 2:18Speaker 4: what was like the thing that kind of got you
- 2:20Speaker 4: on their radar.
- 2:22Speaker 1: At that time? I was, I was. I was pretty
- 2:25Speaker 1: well established for the like since I was like fifteen
- 2:29Speaker 1: is when I first came on the scene. So like
- 2:31Speaker 1: over that four year period, i'd like, you know, been
- 2:34Speaker 1: pretty active and pretty busy, and I was pretty well
- 2:38Speaker 1: known already in the core kind of skate world. I had,
- 2:42Speaker 1: you know, a sponsorship with S that was the shoe
- 2:43Speaker 1: company I was with.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah Costin too, right, Yeah?
- 2:47Speaker 1: Costin is that his shoe?
- 2:48Speaker 2: Does he own that?
- 2:49Speaker 1: I was? No? No, he was, he owned he I mean
- 2:52Speaker 1: he was he's like the face that he was the
- 2:55Speaker 1: boss of S. Yeah, for sure, but he didn't own it.
- 2:57Speaker 1: But he's Nike now, so for him yeaheah. And I
- 3:02Speaker 1: was with like Girl Skateboards, So I was like with
- 3:04Speaker 1: like the most prominent companies at that time, and they would,
- 3:08Speaker 1: you know, get me ads in the magazines and video
- 3:11Speaker 1: parts and the biggest videos. So I was I was
- 3:14Speaker 1: getting well known. And so when Nike, you know, was
- 3:17Speaker 1: starting up their skate program. It started a couple of
- 3:20Speaker 1: years before I got on with some more like core
- 3:23Speaker 1: kind of underground more skate skaters. But I guess they
- 3:28Speaker 1: got to a point where they all, right, we need
- 3:29Speaker 1: like our franchise guy to like help kind of really
- 3:35Speaker 1: break it through. And I was honored when they approached me,
- 3:40Speaker 1: like thinking that maybe I could be that guy for them.
- 3:43Speaker 1: It was like a huge honor.
- 3:44Speaker 2: You must have like an insane just amount of grails, sbs, and.
- 3:48Speaker 1: You would think, you would think, but at the time
- 3:53Speaker 1: I didn't care, Like I like, they were just sending
- 3:56Speaker 1: me shoes, dunks, all the grails, and I was just
- 3:59Speaker 1: skating them. I would just wrecking them, ripping them. But
- 4:03Speaker 1: you know, there was a couple like that I got
- 4:05Speaker 1: rid of. You know, a couple of people offer me
- 4:07Speaker 1: some money else Yeah, sure, dude, what but there's a
- 4:11Speaker 1: few that I've I mean, I've pretty much have had
- 4:13Speaker 1: them all slipped through my fingers at one point. If
- 4:15Speaker 1: I just had the foresight to like stack them up.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I'd probably have like, you know, a couple of million
- 4:20Speaker 1: worth in my collection. It's just a little retirement collection there.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yeah, because there was like this crazy dunk wave of sb's,
- 4:27Speaker 2: like when it was like the Tiffany dunks, and they
- 4:30Speaker 2: all of.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Them, all of them. I had them all almost all
- 4:34Speaker 1: of them. Yes, a couple of them, you know, don't
- 4:37Speaker 1: get me wrong, you know, slaying a couple on the
- 4:39Speaker 1: side here and there, but like not at all what
- 4:42Speaker 1: the prices would have been if I'd have held onto them.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Do you like how hands on is it? Because obviously,
- 4:49Speaker 2: you know, at least when I was a kid, I
- 4:50Speaker 2: used to like sketch sneakers and shit. So when you're
- 4:52Speaker 2: able to design your own shoe, yeah, it's gotta be
- 4:56Speaker 2: fucking cool.
- 4:57Speaker 1: It was dope and it is dope. But you know, I,
- 5:01Speaker 1: especially early on, I was such like a a skate nerd,
- 5:05Speaker 1: like obsessed with skating, Like I didn't want to be
- 5:07Speaker 1: bothered with anything unless it was like being on my
- 5:10Speaker 1: skateboard skating. So like my first shoe, they team me
- 5:14Speaker 1: up with this guy Michael Hernandez and he's the one
- 5:16Speaker 1: who designed it. But what he would do back then
- 5:20Speaker 1: is like basically, come up on the computer, make a
- 5:23Speaker 1: few different renderings pictures, drawings of what he's thinking, print
- 5:26Speaker 1: out the papers for me of all different options, and
- 5:28Speaker 1: I'd be like, I like that, I like this one,
- 5:30Speaker 1: but I like the soul on this one, but I
- 5:32Speaker 1: like the design over here. Maybe let's try mashing these together.
- 5:35Speaker 1: And then we made a sample we tried out.
- 5:38Speaker 2: And then you have to skate in the sample.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Obviously, yep, I'll skate the samples. Tell him like, uh,
- 5:43Speaker 1: you know, I don't like the way this feels too thick,
- 5:46Speaker 1: too thin, whatever, and just like basically a narrowing down process,
- 5:50Speaker 1: which took about a year, a little over year.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, is there for you man? Because I grew up.
- 5:58Speaker 2: I'm thirty eight. So skate boarding was like pop culture
- 6:01Speaker 2: back then, Like we had Tony Hawk. Obviously, Tony Hawk
- 6:04Speaker 2: did so much for kids to discovery the sport. The
- 6:08Speaker 2: X Games were at all time high back then. You know,
- 6:12Speaker 2: how do you feel like the skateboarding industry is like today?
- 6:16Speaker 2: It feels like it's obvious. I feel like it's kind
- 6:17Speaker 2: of like it's not as as mainstream as mainstream, but
- 6:21Speaker 2: kind of more mainstream at the same time.
- 6:23Speaker 1: I know what you're saying, because, like you.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Like hip hop kids. Back then, like we were very
- 6:28Speaker 2: like fuck skaters, we're hip hop kids. But then like
- 6:31Speaker 2: obviously certain artists kind of merge the worlds and now yeah,
- 6:35Speaker 2: they're one in the same.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I think, I mean, you just got to give
- 6:38Speaker 1: credit to social media basically, like it's really created. It's
- 6:42Speaker 1: like you see it in every culture. It's like everything's
- 6:46Speaker 1: kind of merged together, like everybody knows a little bit
- 6:49Speaker 1: about a lot of a lot more things than we
- 6:52Speaker 1: used to. Like I used to only be like had
- 6:54Speaker 1: the horse blinders on. All I did was skate watch
- 6:57Speaker 1: skate videos. I didn't care what else was going on
- 6:58Speaker 1: in the world. But like now it's kind of hard
- 7:00Speaker 1: to avoid. It's just there in your face. So I
- 7:04Speaker 1: see what you're saying. It's like it doesn't necessarily feel
- 7:09Speaker 1: as like concentratedly mainstream, but it's like all over the
- 7:16Speaker 1: culture sprinkled, you know what I mean, which it's.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Like widely accept because I feel like, you know, like
- 7:22Speaker 2: guys like Terry Kennedy and and for well was going
- 7:27Speaker 2: by skateboard pe. Yeah, there was like all the shit
- 7:29Speaker 2: that was happening there kind of just slowly like made it. Oh,
- 7:33Speaker 2: it's okay to be a skater, you know, and then
- 7:34Speaker 2: like Tony Hawk's cracking, and then like even the Tony
- 7:37Speaker 2: Hawk's soundtrack was so fucking crazy, like for it, Yeah,
- 7:40Speaker 2: some of the records that they embedded into your skull. Yeah.
- 7:44Speaker 1: And I'm just noticing now too that the point I'm
- 7:48Speaker 1: at in my career, I realized, at some point everybody
- 7:52Speaker 1: skated a little bit, right, you know, like when they're
- 7:55Speaker 1: fifteen sixteen, and a lot of times those were like
- 7:58Speaker 1: really special nostalgic moments in their life that they'll always remember.
- 8:03Speaker 1: So like all meet guys who are like well known
- 8:06Speaker 1: now in a different fields, whether it be music or
- 8:09Speaker 1: acting a comedy who like I'll meet him to be yo,
- 8:13Speaker 1: what up dude? And I'm like what you know? Me?
- 8:15Speaker 1: Like you're you you know what I mean? Like and like, no,
- 8:18Speaker 1: I used to skate, and I just it's so cool
- 8:20Speaker 1: to now have been in it for so long that
- 8:22Speaker 1: at some point, like they just have that nostalgic memory
- 8:26Speaker 1: of my skating at that point in time.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Who's uh, Because there's some really good skaters in hip
- 8:33Speaker 2: hop and I'm sure on you know, the entertainment side,
- 8:35Speaker 2: like hops In is.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Fucking Hopson's probably like the best.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Skate quietly rich the kids pretty good.
- 8:43Speaker 1: He's pretty he could skate, but Hopy is like really
- 8:46Speaker 1: good Hopson like skater skater. He actually told me we
- 8:49Speaker 1: went to school together, and I didn't realize it at
- 8:51Speaker 1: the time. I guess I was a great ahead of him,
- 8:54Speaker 1: And years later when I met him, he was like, bro,
- 8:56Speaker 1: we used to go to junior high together, Like what
- 8:58Speaker 1: are you seriously Like? Yeah, uh so that was pretty
- 9:01Speaker 1: small world. But you know who else could skate is
- 9:04Speaker 1: yellow Wolf.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Yellow is a great skate Yes.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Yellow Wolf's good. Um, there's a few. Logic got a
- 9:13Speaker 1: couple moves, does he? Yeah, Logia has a few moves.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I've seen him all the heel flip before.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Yeah, anybody ran him, like any comedians or actors or anybody.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Yeah, my boy, Renee Vodka.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Hey, shout out to Renee Vodka. I just got really
- 9:26Speaker 2: ship faced with him last week me too, great fucking
- 9:29Speaker 2: guy was at the Burner concert and he was poorn tequila.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, him and his tequila pineapples. Yeah, I mean
- 9:38Speaker 1: I hang out with Renee. I don't know. He's all
- 9:40Speaker 1: the time. He's the man hilarious. Somebody, don't let him
- 9:44Speaker 1: fool You met that boy? Could He'll flip Yeah, yeah,
- 9:47Speaker 1: yeah yeah.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Shout out to Renee Yeah.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Shout Renee Man. One of the best comedians out right. Now.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Yeah, he's he's killing it. Hey, we got to stop
- 9:53Speaker 2: the interview to tell you about our good folks, odd
- 9:55Speaker 2: Socks Man. Now, these are the odd Socks Basics, ladies
- 9:58Speaker 2: and gentlemen. Now when I tell you this is a
- 10:02Speaker 2: product that every single day I'm alive, for the last
- 10:07Speaker 2: five six years I have used. Are these odd Socks Basics. Now,
- 10:11Speaker 2: what odd Socks is doing is they're kind of reinventing
- 10:13Speaker 2: the sock game, if we're being honest, and the underwear game.
- 10:15Speaker 2: You know, a lot of times you'll hit Walmart, you'll
- 10:17Speaker 2: hit Target, you'll get some socks, you get some draws.
- 10:20Speaker 2: They're affordable, stand up with holes in them. They don't
- 10:23Speaker 2: really feel great. Not odd Socks, ladies and genmen. These
- 10:26Speaker 2: odd Socks Basics are the most comfortable socks I've ever
- 10:30Speaker 2: had on my feet. Not only that, but you're super affordable.

- 10:39Speaker 2: dot Com and if you don't believe me, sock check full. Wait,
- 10:45Speaker 2: that's the ex is on the other side. There we go. Ah,
- 10:49Speaker 2: you see that. Sorry you had to see those white legs.
- 10:53Speaker 2: But it's so dope that, you know, I get to
- 10:56Speaker 2: push a product that I use and that I love,
- 10:58Speaker 2: so odd socks they got the six pack of socks
- 11:01Speaker 2: for fourteen ninety nine at odd socks dot com. The basics,
- 11:04Speaker 2: this is the future of socks, the future of underwear,
- 11:09Speaker 2: comfort and affordability. I'm talking about affordability without jeopardizing the
- 11:13Speaker 2: quality because they are the most comfortable socks you ever
- 11:16Speaker 2: put on your feet. Ladies and gents, Uh, and the
- 11:18Speaker 2: Etcetera's got to show love to the ETCeteras we like
- 11:21Speaker 2: all the stripes on the flag. There are odd socks
- 11:24Speaker 2: dot com man, much love to my brothers over there.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Make sure you get some right now odd socks dot com.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Let's get back to the interview. What's it like speaking
- 11:31Speaker 2: to comedians growing up with your dad?
- 11:35Speaker 1: Uh? It was cool, Like, you know, I didn't live
- 11:37Speaker 1: with him growing up, so I live with my mom
- 11:40Speaker 1: and he was always on the road working, So I
- 11:43Speaker 1: would get like, you know, a random weekend here and
- 11:46Speaker 1: there with him, you know.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's kind of the life right there
- 11:48Speaker 2: on the road every weekend.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty much binding And if he wasn't doing that,
- 11:53Speaker 1: he was on some movie set or TV set. He
- 11:56Speaker 1: was always busy and working, and uh so I just
- 12:01Speaker 1: got to see a lot of cool experiences. A lot
- 12:04Speaker 1: of times, you know, he would bring me and I'd
- 12:06Speaker 1: I'd be backstage at one of his big shows and
- 12:09Speaker 1: I'd be meeting random cool people and I'd be on
- 12:12Speaker 1: a set just running around. He'd have somebody like keeping
- 12:16Speaker 1: an eye on me because I was like a little
- 12:18Speaker 1: active kid running around behind stage, like just getting into trouble.
- 12:23Speaker 1: So it was a really good experience. I think the
- 12:25Speaker 1: biggest takeaway I got from it that I didn't realize
- 12:28Speaker 1: i got older, was like it was normal for me
- 12:30Speaker 1: to dream big. It was normal for me to think that,
- 12:34Speaker 1: like you could have a dream and it's gonna happen
- 12:36Speaker 1: because I'm here watching it for him, right. So like
- 12:39Speaker 1: every time I approached a new hobby, I approached it
- 12:41Speaker 1: like this is what I'm going to do with my life.
- 12:44Speaker 1: And luckily with skateboarding, that was the thing that I
- 12:47Speaker 1: stuck with the most, and so I never had that
- 12:51Speaker 1: like kind of mental barrier in my mind of like
- 12:53Speaker 1: I don't know if I could do it. It was just
- 12:55Speaker 1: like no, if I just work hard enough, I'm going
- 12:57Speaker 1: to do it. And so I think that was a
- 12:59Speaker 1: big like.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Yeh, help, who is the coolest person backstage you met
- 13:03Speaker 2: at one of your dad shows? Oh?
- 13:04Speaker 1: Man, there's a couple of people like Jimmy Smith was
- 13:09Speaker 1: always super dope, super cool. Me, yeah, super cool actor. Uh,
- 13:14Speaker 1: Carlos Santana was that's pretty great, so cool. So my
- 13:17Speaker 1: dad used to have a talk show called It'll Show
- 13:20Speaker 1: that Paul Rodriguez on was it Univision, Telemundo one of
- 13:23Speaker 1: the other. And I was probably about six, maybe seven,
- 13:27Speaker 1: and I didn't know who Carlos Santana was at this time.
- 13:30Speaker 1: You know, I'm just roaming the halls backstage, you know,
- 13:34Speaker 1: just doing what I want to do, and this a
- 13:37Speaker 1: green room or dressing room was open, and I just
- 13:39Speaker 1: hear like a guitar and I'm just like, I look you, oh, hey, man,
- 13:44Speaker 1: Like that's a cool guitar. And he was like, oh
- 13:46Speaker 1: yeah you think so I was like yeah, I was like, hey,
- 13:49Speaker 1: can you play the the song from the Pink Panther liken'
- 13:54Speaker 1: didn't and he just did it. He was like, I think, so,
- 13:57Speaker 1: I think I got that one, and he did it,
- 13:59Speaker 1: and I was so mind blow. Was like, oh my god,
- 14:01Speaker 1: you're really good man. And I ran.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Dad, Dad, Dad, the sky.
- 14:06Speaker 1: You gotta put on my should you the pink panther.
- 14:10Speaker 1: So that was a pretty cool little moment. And then
- 14:13Speaker 1: another time, mister T, oh that's sick. Well, yeah, he
- 14:17Speaker 1: was the man like I seen him at the used
- 14:20Speaker 1: to have the Christmas Day parade every year in Pasadena
- 14:26Speaker 1: and my dad was in the parade. One year, brought
- 14:28Speaker 1: me and he was like doing an interview and we
- 14:31Speaker 1: were sat at the same table with like mister T
- 14:33Speaker 1: and some other people, and you know, eighteen was out
- 14:36Speaker 1: at this time, and it was just like I was
- 14:38Speaker 1: so hyped that he was there and my dad was
- 14:41Speaker 1: doing an interview and I had to go to the
- 14:42Speaker 1: bathroom real bad. I forget who I told. I was like,
- 14:45Speaker 1: I gotta go pee, and he heard me. He was like,
- 14:47Speaker 1: come on, little man, I got you. He picks me,
- 14:49Speaker 1: He puts me over his shoulders, like, walks me to
- 14:51Speaker 1: the restroom, puts me down. All right, go ahead, are
- 14:53Speaker 1: you been his? Then I go to the bat like,
- 14:56Speaker 1: come out, he's waiting for me. He puts me back on,
- 14:58Speaker 1: then he takes me back to the table and says
- 14:59Speaker 1: me down. So that's another great memory I have.
- 15:03Speaker 2: So were your parents pretty supportive of like, you chasing
- 15:06Speaker 2: the dream of being a pro skateboarder? Did it is? Yeah,
- 15:08Speaker 2: because I mean I feel like you got to get
- 15:10Speaker 2: dropped off of competitions in a skate park, and yeah,
- 15:12Speaker 2: got a cheap hobby.
- 15:14Speaker 1: It's cheaper than most. But but when it comes to
- 15:17Speaker 1: that point, yeah, shout out to Uncle Dave. He's the
- 15:19Speaker 1: one who would take me to all the contests. He
- 15:21Speaker 1: would sign me up and drive me, get the hotels,
- 15:24Speaker 1: book them for us. So he was always super supportive
- 15:27Speaker 1: in that. My mom was really supportive in the sense of,
- 15:32Speaker 1: you know, if I wanted to take karate class as
- 15:33Speaker 1: a kid, she would sign me up. If I wanted
- 15:35Speaker 1: to play a Little league baseball, sign me up like
- 15:37Speaker 1: so when it came to skateboarding, she was all good
- 15:40Speaker 1: with it. There was no really like places to get lessons.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I just wanted to go out in the backyard with
- 15:44Speaker 1: my friends and and skate, So she was like, yeah,
- 15:46Speaker 1: you know, enjoy your your kid explore, you know, be active.
- 15:51Speaker 1: And then my dad it wasn't that he wasn't supportive,
- 15:54Speaker 1: he just didn't get it. He didn't understand it. Like
- 15:56Speaker 1: when I was like telling him like I'm going to
- 15:58Speaker 1: be a pro skater, He's like like, what is that? Like,
- 16:01Speaker 1: have no problem with me skating. You know, you're twelve
- 16:03Speaker 1: thirteen years old. Have fun, you know that's what boys do,
- 16:05Speaker 1: you know. But I was like, I'm going to be
- 16:08Speaker 1: a pro Skater's like, son, like what I was like, Yeah,
- 16:11Speaker 1: I'm going to be a pro skater. He's like, there's
- 16:13Speaker 1: no money in that. I'm like, yeah, there isn't. Eric
- 16:16Speaker 1: Coustin was my example. I was like, no, Eric Couston
- 16:19Speaker 1: He's he makes a lot of money. I had no
- 16:20Speaker 1: idea how much this got he's making or not, but
- 16:22Speaker 1: in my mind he was like a gajillionaire. And he
- 16:26Speaker 1: just was like, son, I think, you know, have fun,
- 16:28Speaker 1: but like you should like think about what you really
- 16:30Speaker 1: want to do with your life that old time.
- 16:32Speaker 2: You probably heard similar shit from your grandparents about being
- 16:35Speaker 2: a professional.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Literally what I told him, that's literally what that's the
- 16:39Speaker 1: That's the one thing that I told him where he
- 16:41Speaker 1: never like tried to talk me out of it. Ever again.
- 16:45Speaker 1: I was like, Dad, like, you know, Grandma and grandpa,
- 16:49Speaker 1: all you guys immigrated straight from Mexico, grew up in Compton,
- 16:53Speaker 1: poor migrant farm workers, and you told him you're going
- 16:57Speaker 1: to be a comedian and this is the way you're
- 16:59Speaker 1: going to take care of the family. He was like,
- 17:01Speaker 1: I was like yeah, and he was like, okay, you
- 17:03Speaker 1: got me. Like, that's the only time I've ever like,
- 17:07Speaker 1: not had the last words with a comedian.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Is there a trick that you had to perfect over
- 17:13Speaker 2: time that might have taken some years off your life,
- 17:15Speaker 2: or that you've wracked up the most injuries trying to
- 17:17Speaker 2: figure that?
- 17:19Speaker 1: I guess yeah, it wasn't even one that I was
- 17:23Speaker 1: trying to perfect. It was one that I thought I
- 17:25Speaker 1: had pretty good. But you know, it was just a
- 17:27Speaker 1: freak accident. Back in twenty eighteen, I blew out my
- 17:31Speaker 1: whole right knee, every ligament, everything, the meniscus is aco,
- 17:35Speaker 1: everything was all torn apart. I was skating these stairs.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I did this trick called a half cab flip. I
- 17:40Speaker 1: just completely missed the pop airballed, it landed crazy wrong,
- 17:46Speaker 1: felt the whole thing pop out of place and go back.
- 17:49Speaker 1: And so that took me out for a good two years.
- 17:52Speaker 1: So I had never been off my board for longer
- 17:55Speaker 1: than maybe a month at that point, from like a
- 17:57Speaker 1: sprained ankle or something. So that took me out a
- 17:59Speaker 1: good two years.
- 18:01Speaker 2: How many stairs was it?
- 18:02Speaker 1: It was only nine. It wasn't like a crazy big set.
- 18:04Speaker 1: It was just it's a freak accident. But as far
- 18:09Speaker 1: as a single trick besides like that type of thing. Nah,
- 18:13Speaker 1: it's just an accumulation now, like my knees, my ankles,
- 18:15Speaker 1: I feel it now, I bet yeah. They're talking to
- 18:18Speaker 1: me every morning when I get out of bed. Those
- 18:20Speaker 1: first few steps are like I'm aching.
- 18:24Speaker 2: When you're like coming up, Like there's like work guys,
- 18:27Speaker 2: street guys, guys who could do both, Like what would
- 18:30Speaker 2: like because I feel like a lot of the more
- 18:31Speaker 2: old school guys were more like halfpipe bruhs. You know
- 18:34Speaker 2: what I'm saying? Like what what?
- 18:38Speaker 1: What?
- 18:38Speaker 2: I guess like because you would say you're more of
- 18:40Speaker 2: a street skater? Yeah? What uh? Made? Was it just
- 18:44Speaker 2: at a necessity, Like I can learn how to skate
- 18:46Speaker 2: because the streets outside Like no.
- 18:49Speaker 1: It was kids at school, sorry, my kids texting me.
- 18:53Speaker 1: It was kids at school that I just I would
- 18:58Speaker 1: walk to school in the morning for seven grade, and
- 19:01Speaker 1: every morning they were out there skating in the parking lot.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Every every day after school they were back in the
- 19:06Speaker 1: parkland and I just found myself standing there like at
- 19:10Speaker 1: a distance and just watching them. I thought it was
- 19:12Speaker 1: the coolest shit I ever seen in my life. Like
- 19:14Speaker 1: they could jump, they could land back on at the board, flips,
- 19:17Speaker 1: they keep going. I was just like just enamored by it,
- 19:20Speaker 1: and I had to know how it was done, Like
- 19:22Speaker 1: like when you see a magician do a magic trick
- 19:25Speaker 1: and oh my god, my kid. Sorry, Uh, Mike, can
- 19:30Speaker 1: you text or ask her what she needs?
- 19:31Speaker 2: Sorry? Thanks, dude?
- 19:35Speaker 1: O was I? Oh yeah, it was like a magic trick.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I just had to know how it was done. So
- 19:39Speaker 1: finally I just saw one of the kids and asked them, like, hey,
- 19:43Speaker 1: can I try standing on your board?
- 19:45Speaker 2: And oh my god, sorry, dude, take your freaking kids.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Call man, Hey, when you give a shout out to
- 19:50Speaker 2: my bookie Man back on the blutleg Cap podcast. Oh listen,

- 20:11Speaker 2: I opten to hate the Patriots more than anything in life,
- 20:14Speaker 2: including their owner. So we're rooting for the Seahawks. But listen,
- 20:18Speaker 2: you got to use my bookie. They've got their Super
- 20:20Speaker 2: Bowl prop board. It is insane, all right. They get
- 20:23Speaker 2: talked about on Jimmy Kimmel Live every year. When the

- 20:28Speaker 2: You can bet on so much stuff. Just use that
- 20:30Speaker 2: promo code Bootleg and get your first bet covered up

- 20:40Speaker 2: All right. When I tell you the prop board is crazy,
- 20:42Speaker 2: I mean obviously you do the touchdown scores. You could
- 20:45Speaker 2: do color gatorade. I mean, listen, it is lit. My
- 20:49Speaker 2: Bookie is my preferred sports book for the last ten
- 20:51Speaker 2: years at least. So make sure you go to my

- 21:02Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. Been on the Suns every time.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Let's get back to the podcast. Purchase confirmed?
- 21:06Speaker 1: Sorry, Yeah, yeah, I take care of the kid. So yeah,
- 21:10Speaker 1: I just fell in love with it watching kids at
- 21:13Speaker 1: school skate and one day I finally work up the
- 21:16Speaker 1: courage to ask him if I can try, and I
- 21:18Speaker 1: was hooked.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Oh shit.
- 21:20Speaker 1: And then that year for Christmas, I just told everybody like,
- 21:23Speaker 1: just I don't know what I want. Just can I
- 21:25Speaker 1: have some money? I just want to get a skateboard.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Do you remember what brand you first bought?
- 21:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a Powell Powell Blank Venture trucks, bones,
- 21:34Speaker 1: wheels and just like random bearings. And I think Shorty's
- 21:39Speaker 1: hardware that's crazy. Yeah, is like for you?
- 21:45Speaker 2: I wonder because I feel like you're one of the
- 21:47Speaker 2: guys who has kind of like changed like the trajectory
- 21:51Speaker 2: of what skateboarding can be. And I think Tony Hawk's
- 21:53Speaker 2: one of those guys, even like Rob dear Deck's a
- 21:57Speaker 2: guy like that for sure. Who would you kind of
- 22:00Speaker 2: put up in the like most influential, impactful skaters of
- 22:05Speaker 2: all time, not necessarily the best, but like guys who
- 22:07Speaker 2: are just very, very impactful.
- 22:09Speaker 1: I mean, you named a nice chunk of them. Let's
- 22:13Speaker 1: Chad Muska chat to Chadman, Yeah, Kareem Campbell, Stevie Williams
- 22:21Speaker 1: of course Costin, Yeah, Eric Cousten, Tom Penny, Christian Hassoy
- 22:29Speaker 1: for the generation even you know before Eric's Lance Mount
- 22:33Speaker 1: and Christian Assoy, Steve Caballero. I feel bad because I
- 22:39Speaker 1: know I'm gonna be driving later and be like, shit,
- 22:42Speaker 1: I should know.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I mean, I mean, I think he hit a lot
- 22:44Speaker 2: of the guys.
- 22:45Speaker 1: That's a good that's a good little bunch of them
- 22:48Speaker 1: right there.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Because Chad has was was super, Chad's Chad super.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I don't know if it was like his his. I
- 22:54Speaker 1: want to say he had some ownership for sure. He
- 22:56Speaker 1: definitely launched it. He was the guy like they used
- 22:59Speaker 1: to launch its thought DC. He's as well, that's fucking crazy, huh.
- 23:07Speaker 1: He's from Eazy Uh. Rob didn't own d C. But
- 23:12Speaker 1: I want to say he had a.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Little piece of sure hope. So after he worked on
- 23:15Speaker 2: that show.
- 23:16Speaker 1: No, he he's the best businessman that I know, and
- 23:23Speaker 1: he was getting his fair share, his more than fair
- 23:27Speaker 1: share from DC. He had a he had a crazy
- 23:29Speaker 1: hustle with them early on before it was like normal
- 23:31Speaker 1: to uh really have big shoe deals. He already had
- 23:35Speaker 1: it before he was even robing big. Before all that,
- 23:37Speaker 1: he was already like his business mind was crazy.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Yeah, would you say Street League is kind of like
- 23:43Speaker 2: taking the place of Like, I mean, I feel like
- 23:46Speaker 2: X Games is obviously still very big, right it's going
- 23:48Speaker 2: on right now, but yeah, it feels like I'm the
- 23:50Speaker 2: skateboarding front like Street League is kind.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Of right now. Yeah, Street League is the most respected
- 23:57Speaker 1: I guess skate contests going on right now. In my opinion,
- 24:01Speaker 1: there's a new one coming out in a couple of
- 24:03Speaker 1: weeks called the PSL, which is a really good one,
- 24:06Speaker 1: which I think in my opinion it's going to be
- 24:08Speaker 1: like right there on a Street League confessional, Yeah, Professional
- 24:13Speaker 1: Skate League. So I think that one, because it's a
- 24:16Speaker 1: total different format, is going to have a chance to
- 24:20Speaker 1: be like right there on a street lead.
- 24:22Speaker 2: What's different?
- 24:23Speaker 1: So it's just skating a set of stairs, and so
- 24:27Speaker 1: it's like it's like playing a game of horse. So
- 24:32Speaker 1: like there's three it's teams. First of all, three verse three.
- 24:34Speaker 1: One guy goes does a trick, the next team has
- 24:37Speaker 1: to do that same trick or this team gets their point.
- 24:40Speaker 1: And so it's like baseball in the sense of like
- 24:43Speaker 1: if this team keeps landing tricks to keep going, but
- 24:47Speaker 1: if they miss up three times and it switches over
- 24:49Speaker 1: and now they get to start over. So it's like
- 24:51Speaker 1: got innings. So you don't have to understand what the
- 24:54Speaker 1: tricks are. You don't have to know regular switch, faky, nalli, whatever.
- 24:57Speaker 1: You just know this guy landed that trick and this
- 25:00Speaker 1: team needs to land that trick. So it's gonna be like.
- 25:04Speaker 2: A lot of good are there like team names?
- 25:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I got a team. I'm an owner.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Oh okay, so you own a team in the league.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Own a team in the league, Yeah you could.
- 25:12Speaker 2: There's franchises, yeah.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Yeah, there's six teams right now. You got Team Sahs,
- 25:17Speaker 1: which is my team.
- 25:18Speaker 2: What's that mean?
- 25:19Speaker 1: It's it's my skate crew that I had since two
- 25:22Speaker 1: thousand and one that only four of us know the name.
- 25:25Speaker 1: We never tell nobody anything, but it's like that's our
- 25:29Speaker 1: our team name Sahs. You got Losantos, which is headed
- 25:33Speaker 1: up by Felipe Gustavo you have the Wolverines, which is
- 25:37Speaker 1: headed up by Chris Jocelyn, the SODI of twenty twenty five?
- 25:42Speaker 1: Uh who else?
- 25:43Speaker 2: You got?
- 25:44Speaker 1: Jamie Foy and a shod split a team, but I
- 25:46Speaker 1: don't remember what their team is called. Another team called Lithium.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Niger has a team. I should know all the team
- 25:54Speaker 1: names off top of my hand, but I can't own. Man,
- 25:57Speaker 1: but it's only we only care about sahs.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Are you gonna skape?
- 26:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm a skate that's yeah.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:02Speaker 1: So we got six guys on each team, so you
- 26:04Speaker 1: can have like a bench and starters.
- 26:06Speaker 2: I saw Niger just had a pretty crazy injury.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Man, Yeah that was wild, pretty wild, Like he was
- 26:11Speaker 1: azy when that happened, just.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Like never know, right, Yeah, No, even if you're like
- 26:15Speaker 2: the best in the world, you're still fucking skateboarding doing
- 26:18Speaker 2: crazy shit.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, I mean, and he does. He pushes himself
- 26:23Speaker 1: like unreal limits. And the crazy part is what he
- 26:27Speaker 1: was trying wasn't even that like I would expect that
- 26:32Speaker 1: that wouldn't have been the craziest thing he's He's done.
- 26:35Speaker 1: He's done some pretty like death defying stuff, but just
- 26:38Speaker 1: freak accidents like when you're skating rails that big, Like
- 26:42Speaker 1: just one little miscalculation and that can happen, you know, So,
- 26:48Speaker 1: like you said, it doesn't matter how how good you are,
- 26:50Speaker 1: a freak accident.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I remember seeing him and he was like a little
- 26:52Speaker 2: kid skating.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Dreads long ass. Yeah, yeah he was. He's been on
- 26:56Speaker 1: the scenes. He's like nine ten years old, crazy, like
- 26:58Speaker 1: a little child prodigy.
- 27:00Speaker 2: When is it so the PSLs in a couple of weeks.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Yeah, So the first PSL is now going to be
- 27:05Speaker 1: on February seventh, I believe so. Yeah, Team Sahs versus
- 27:13Speaker 1: Los Santos, that's our first team that we battle, and
- 27:16Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to it.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Do you uh you make it into one of the
- 27:20Speaker 2: later Tony Hawk games. I think it was the Which one?
- 27:23Speaker 2: Was it? The Doug one?
- 27:25Speaker 1: I was in Underground? I was in one more thing
- 27:28Speaker 1: I can't project eight.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Yeah. By the way, I played neither but one through four.
- 27:33Speaker 2: I was fucking fucking shit up on.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Are you do you feel like because I know certain
- 27:38Speaker 2: people think that skate is the better skate franchise, I'm
- 27:42Speaker 2: a Tony Hawkeye. What do you think is the best
- 27:44Speaker 2: skateboarding game of all time?
- 27:47Speaker 1: Oh? You're putting me in a tight spot here. I
- 27:52Speaker 1: love Tony to death. He's the man. But I will
- 27:54Speaker 1: have to say, when skate first came out, I'm just
- 27:57Speaker 1: talking in that era, it was more realistic, the moves,
- 28:02Speaker 1: the way they they had, Like the tricks, look the
- 28:05Speaker 1: way you even on the controllers, you did them kind
- 28:07Speaker 1: of similar to how your feet would move. So as
- 28:10Speaker 1: an actual skater, I was like, this is actually more
- 28:14Speaker 1: realistic to the tricks that are going down.
- 28:18Speaker 2: That makes sense. Yeah, it was definitely. That's why I
- 28:20Speaker 2: think that's why I did like it as much. I
- 28:22Speaker 2: was like, man, I'm trying to fucking yeah, that's Tony Hawk.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Tony Hawk. Man.
- 28:27Speaker 1: That's what was so smart though, Like Tony Hawk and
- 28:29Speaker 1: those guys, like they knew that they were trying to
- 28:31Speaker 1: reach the masses. Yes, and you know, so business wise,
- 28:35Speaker 1: that's much smarter.
- 28:36Speaker 2: What do you think is the greatest skate trick ever landed?
- 28:41Speaker 1: It's hard to say, man, there's really no true answer,
- 28:44Speaker 1: but I'm gonna say just because off the top of
- 28:46Speaker 1: my head right now, Chris Johnson just did a three
- 28:49Speaker 1: sixty flip down El Toro, which is twenty stairs qumungous
- 28:53Speaker 1: and it's like, that's the reason why he won Skater
- 28:56Speaker 1: of the Year this year, among you know, his other
- 28:58Speaker 1: amazing skating, but that was the one that really sealed
- 29:00Speaker 1: the deal for him. So I'm just saying, because that's
- 29:02Speaker 1: on the top of my head right now, that I'm
- 29:04Speaker 1: going to go with that.
- 29:05Speaker 2: That's tight. Yeah, have you been because we talked a
- 29:09Speaker 2: little bit obviously shot to Deshaun, who's also a Nike skater.
- 29:13Speaker 2: He's from my hometown. Have you, like, have you kind
- 29:16Speaker 2: of helped mentor him at all because he's obviously on
- 29:18Speaker 2: the younger side.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Yeah, we're pretty close. We're pretty close. Actually, when we
- 29:22Speaker 1: did the first PSL like sample game, he was my teammate.
- 29:25Speaker 1: It was me and him. Oh, and he's he's going
- 29:28Speaker 1: to be in the PSL as well. But I hang
- 29:32Speaker 1: out with him often, and you know, I'm always there
- 29:35Speaker 1: to offer advice anytime he has any questions or you know,
- 29:39Speaker 1: anything career wise or business wise that he's that he's
- 29:44Speaker 1: you know, I don't want to say struggling with but
- 29:47Speaker 1: just debating on I guess you know, he comes to me.
- 29:51Speaker 1: But I never, like, you know, try to be forceful
- 29:54Speaker 1: by anything because I've made millions of mistakes, so sometimes
- 29:58Speaker 1: my advice could be wrong, So but I'm always there.
- 30:02Speaker 2: From in twenty twenty six, I'm sure it's changed, Like
- 30:06Speaker 2: how you get on the radar to get sponsors and
- 30:08Speaker 2: become a quote unquote professional skater because we have social
- 30:11Speaker 2: media and all this stuff. What would you say is like,
- 30:13Speaker 2: if someone is in their hometown and they're skating every
- 30:15Speaker 2: day and they feel like they're really dope, Like, what
- 30:18Speaker 2: do you think is like the best advice for somebody
- 30:20Speaker 2: to try to kind of just get on the radar
- 30:22Speaker 2: to try to get some sort of financing from one
- 30:25Speaker 2: of these companies.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean obviously, you know you would think it's
- 30:31Speaker 1: like about high level skating, which that is a factor,
- 30:34Speaker 1: But I would say I would argue that skating is
- 30:37Speaker 1: more comparable to like music than any other sport, right,
- 30:40Speaker 1: Like you got guys who can wrap their asses off,
- 30:43Speaker 1: but can't sell a record to save their life. Same
- 30:45Speaker 1: thing as skateboarding. Like you got guys who can do
- 30:47Speaker 1: the hardest tricks in the world no one's ever done.
- 30:50Speaker 1: But if you're not appealing to that audience, if you're
- 30:54Speaker 1: not making the kids out there watch it want to
- 30:56Speaker 1: be like you, if you're not inspiring nobody, then it's
- 30:59Speaker 1: going to be hard for you to get a career going.
- 31:01Speaker 1: So I would suggest to everybody, like, yes, perfect your craft,
- 31:06Speaker 1: but it's not just in doing the hard tricks. You
- 31:08Speaker 1: got to be mindful of, like how you make the
- 31:10Speaker 1: tricks look, how graceful you are with your your style,
- 31:13Speaker 1: not just your clothing style, but like the way you
- 31:15Speaker 1: look when you actually are doing the tricks. How you
- 31:18Speaker 1: dress also will help. You. Know, it doesn't have to
- 31:21Speaker 1: be a specific way of dressing, but like if you're
- 31:23Speaker 1: if you're good on knowing who you are and your
- 31:25Speaker 1: personal style and you put yourself together, well that will help.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Like you have to think about making yourself marketable.
- 31:31Speaker 2: You kind of want to make yourself a brand. Like
- 31:33Speaker 2: that's the whole thing, right exactly, you got it, Like
- 31:36Speaker 2: you gotta have eyes on you so people could be like, yeah,
- 31:38Speaker 2: I want you to wear a shit.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Yeah exactly. So like I'll see footage from kids, like
- 31:42Speaker 1: they'll DM me footage or whatnot, and like basically every
- 31:46Speaker 1: kid's good these days. If they're they're getting to the
- 31:49Speaker 1: level of trying to submit a sponsor me tape, you
- 31:53Speaker 1: just look for those other factors, Okay, like, Okay, he's
- 31:55Speaker 1: got a cool style to him. He's got a whole
- 31:57Speaker 1: vibe to him. I like his tricks, choices of t ricks, obstacles,
- 32:01Speaker 1: he skates. And then you got to meet them in personally.
- 32:03Speaker 1: How does he vibe with the rest of the guys.
- 32:05Speaker 1: They got a good attitude and all those type of things.
- 32:08Speaker 1: You got to think about it. If you want to
- 32:09Speaker 1: be a pro skater, you got to remember, like that's
- 32:13Speaker 1: gonna be your job and your career. So there's other
- 32:15Speaker 1: things that come along with it. Signings, demos, tours, you know,
- 32:20Speaker 1: some pressure to filming deadlines. You know, it's not just
- 32:23Speaker 1: like when you're when you're younger and you're just with
- 32:25Speaker 1: your friends and it's on your own time, right, Like
- 32:27Speaker 1: you have to like.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like you're like professional is the keyword, you know.
- 32:32Speaker 1: So there's a lot of kids I've seen come in
- 32:34Speaker 1: not be able to like adjust to that and like
- 32:37Speaker 1: disappear and just not talk to.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Me about primitive and like because that's turned into like,
- 32:41Speaker 2: I mean, you guys have been on a crazy run.
- 32:44Speaker 2: You go to Zoomies. It's in there, Like what was
- 32:46Speaker 2: the was there was there anything about starting your own brand,
- 32:50Speaker 2: like that that you know was a little more difficult
- 32:53Speaker 2: than you thought, and just talk about the brand in general.
- 32:55Speaker 1: The whole time has been difficult. It's been it's been
- 32:59Speaker 1: a really hard, hard journey because skateboarding is such a
- 33:07Speaker 1: critical culture, right, Like you go a little too big,
- 33:11Speaker 1: you sold out. You make a business decision, but it
- 33:14Speaker 1: might not align with a cultural decision, you know what
- 33:18Speaker 1: I mean. So, like it's really hard to put those
- 33:22Speaker 1: two worlds together. It's almost like oil and vinegar. It's
- 33:25Speaker 1: really hard to get those two worlds to blend. So
- 33:28Speaker 1: you get a lot of shit sometimes, but sometimes you
- 33:30Speaker 1: got to make decisions for the business. Sometimes you got
- 33:33Speaker 1: to make decisions for the culture.
- 33:35Speaker 2: You guys have some pretty crazy collapse too. Yeah, I
- 33:38Speaker 2: feel like I bought my kid like some sort of
- 33:40Speaker 2: was it Dragonball y'all?
- 33:41Speaker 1: Yeah, we had dragon ball Z, no Ruto Sublime, I
- 33:45Speaker 1: just a sublime. Yeah, we're about to launch our next one.
- 33:48Speaker 1: We had Outcast, Tupac Biggie.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Do you curate a lot of that stuff?
- 33:55Speaker 1: Not me personally, my partner, Jubil, He's like he's our
- 33:59Speaker 1: design like brand kind of guy. I'm still kind of
- 34:02Speaker 1: more just I just love the skating part. I'm the
- 34:06Speaker 1: I'm the face. I'm shaking hands, kissing babies and out
- 34:09Speaker 1: here skating.
- 34:10Speaker 2: It feels like we're living in like some historical times,
- 34:13Speaker 2: especially with what's been going on with this ice shit
- 34:15Speaker 2: in Minnesota and everywhere. I mean, that's staring content today. Horrible.
- 34:19Speaker 2: I just saw pictures of live in content today.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Really.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, sir, obviously, you know, being uh of Hispanic descent,
- 34:30Speaker 2: You're you're like you said, your dad grew up here.
- 34:33Speaker 2: His parents, you say, came from.
- 34:34Speaker 1: From Mexico, Mexico.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Yeah, from Mexico, work in the farms. What are your
- 34:39Speaker 2: thoughts on just the temperature of what's going on right now?
- 34:42Speaker 2: And just like this, the whole ice sh it is.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Kind of well, I'm quite frankly, I'm fucking scared, like,
- 34:47Speaker 1: not not even necessarily, just for like myself or whatever.
- 34:50Speaker 1: I mean, like just in general, Like I'm scared for
- 34:54Speaker 1: for my people, you know, I'm scared for like friends
- 34:58Speaker 1: and my friend's families. I'm scared for for people. I
- 35:02Speaker 1: just I don't know, man, Like it's just I don't
- 35:05Speaker 1: even know how to put it into words, Like I
- 35:07Speaker 1: haven't really posted on it. I really haven't say anything
- 35:09Speaker 1: about it because like I don't even know how to
- 35:12Speaker 1: articulate how I feel. It's just it's scary, it's fucking sad, disgusting.
- 35:22Speaker 1: I don't know, man, it just it like literally gives me,
- 35:25Speaker 1: like just make me sick to my stomach. What's happening
- 35:28Speaker 1: to people? Because it's just it just feels like something
- 35:33Speaker 1: bigger is going on.
- 35:34Speaker 2: For sure. It feels like we don't have all the information. Yeah,
- 35:38Speaker 2: like they've just kind of taken like four or five
- 35:40Speaker 2: of the constitutional amendments and just flesh.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like little by little, these things are kind
- 35:46Speaker 1: of like, oh, we'll take this away, we'll take that away,
- 35:48Speaker 1: and like how far before we all don't realize that
- 35:52Speaker 1: we're like fully like yeah, States, yeah exactly. So like
- 35:58Speaker 1: on a bigger note, that's that scares me as well.
- 36:01Speaker 1: I'm just scared of this.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Like I saw a video today of like a five
- 36:05Speaker 2: year old kid having to defend himself in court. What. Yeah,
- 36:09Speaker 2: it was fucking crazy.
- 36:10Speaker 1: I saw the other day that they like took a
- 36:13Speaker 1: kid and used them as base, yes, And that shit
- 36:16Speaker 1: had me crying, bro, I had me tearing up.
- 36:18Speaker 2: That's like there's like a footage yesterday that came out
- 36:22Speaker 2: there's a detention center in Texas somewhere. They flew a
- 36:25Speaker 2: drone over it. But like the lawyer was like trying
- 36:29Speaker 2: to get in to talk to somebody who was represented.
- 36:31Speaker 2: The wouldn't let him in, but you could hear everyone's
- 36:34Speaker 2: screaming on the inside, like kids screaming, brought so fucked.
- 36:38Speaker 2: That's like what are we doing?
- 36:40Speaker 1: Yeah? Like I don't understand like how humans can we
- 36:44Speaker 1: can be so like non compassionate for each other.
- 36:47Speaker 2: You know, yeah. I just like even on the you know,
- 36:50Speaker 2: the the dude who just died, you know, it was
- 36:52Speaker 2: like it's just funny to watch like people who are
- 36:55Speaker 2: like hardcore Second Amendment like advocates like do you know
- 37:00Speaker 2: gymnastics to try to make it make sense why that
- 37:02Speaker 2: dude deserve to get shot. I'm like, what do we
- 37:05Speaker 2: is this America or not? What are we doing?
- 37:07Speaker 1: And we're becoming desensitized, I mean because we see this shit.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Every day, Like there's thirteen things a day that pops
- 37:13Speaker 2: up where you're like, wait, yes, is this the new normal?
- 37:16Speaker 2: I felt the same thing was happening with gods Wher.
- 37:17Speaker 2: It was like is this just like what's going on?
- 37:19Speaker 1: Like yeah, it's like I don't even know, Like it's
- 37:23Speaker 1: so much going on in the world, so much like
- 37:26Speaker 1: pain that like I don't even know what to feel anymore,
- 37:30Speaker 1: Like it's like too much to take on. Like how
- 37:32Speaker 1: do you even.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Feels like you're helpless? Man?
- 37:34Speaker 1: Yeah, so I don't know if it's the right thing
- 37:36Speaker 1: or not, but like I kind of try to like
- 37:39Speaker 1: not hear about as much as like.
- 37:41Speaker 2: If you if I dude, the Twitter doom scroll is
- 37:45Speaker 2: it'll put you in a fuck. Yeah.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I really try to be a little bit like ignorant,
- 37:50Speaker 1: Like ignorance is bliss. I know that's probably not necessarily good,
- 37:54Speaker 1: but at this point, like I don't even know what
- 37:56Speaker 1: to do, Like we can post about it, like does
- 37:58Speaker 1: that do anything? I don't know. Right, it just fucking sucks,
- 38:01Speaker 1: and I'm just praying for everybody.
- 38:03Speaker 2: Man, Hey, we got to wrap up this interview, another
- 38:06Speaker 2: one presented by Hardan. Baby you already know what it is.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Shout out to Hardeen for presenting another episode of the
- 38:12Speaker 2: Bootleg HEP podcast. Don't forget when you're in Vegas, you're
- 38:15Speaker 2: getting that tax, you getting that uber say take me
- 38:16Speaker 2: to Hardean, the number one Cannabis dispensary in the world
- 38:20Speaker 2: premium selection of the craziest gas you could ever ask for,
- 38:24Speaker 2: and then they break down all what all the terps mean?
- 38:26Speaker 2: It's incredible. Go to Harden Underscore Las Vegas, shoot them all.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Follow and when you're in Las Vegas and make sure
- 38:32Speaker 2: you shoot them a visit. Hey, what's up?
- 38:33Speaker 3: Man?
- 38:34Speaker 2: We got to give a shout out to our new sponsor,
- 38:36Speaker 2: Raffie Law Group. Listen, I don't partner with just anybody.
- 38:39Speaker 2: And if you're from Arizona, all my az people who
- 38:42Speaker 2: are watching, y'all know, call Raffi Raffi Raffie Law Group.
- 38:47Speaker 2: They treat you like family, which is why I decided
- 38:51Speaker 2: to partner with them. Man, it only makes sense. The
- 38:54Speaker 2: best law group in AZ. They've helped over seventy thousand
- 38:57Speaker 2: folks in Arizona and listen, it's pretty easy. Whatever happens,
- 39:03Speaker 2: car accidents, car crashes, injuries, whatever, they handle it. My
- 39:06Speaker 2: wife actually got into an accident. This was like five
- 39:09Speaker 2: or six years ago. Uh, they handled her case. She
- 39:13Speaker 2: got paid out. It was super painless, it was super seamless.
- 39:17Speaker 2: The team was incredible. And when I tell you, man,
- 39:20Speaker 2: it's like a real family atmosphere over there. This is
- 39:23Speaker 2: not like just some random billboard lawyer or some bus
- 39:25Speaker 2: stop lawyer. No, it's a real team, all right. So
- 39:28Speaker 2: make sure you go support Raffie Law Group and don't
- 39:30Speaker 2: forget you get into an accident, any sort of personal injury,
- 39:34Speaker 2: car crash, whatever, make sure you call RAFFI right now.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Six two three three eight eight forty three thirty three.
- 39:41Speaker 2: That's six three three eight eight four three three three
- 39:45Speaker 2: Call RAFFI. Anything you got coming out? Obviously the skate
- 39:48Speaker 2: League is coming in a couple of weeks.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Yeah, you might fud show you my sneaker. Yeah please,
- 39:55Speaker 1: Nike ESB Padriguez one sneaker coming out. Okay, I got you,
- 40:01Speaker 1: I got you. So this this is my first shoe.
- 40:05Speaker 1: So last year we did a twenty year anniversary. It
- 40:07Speaker 1: came out in two thousand and five.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Is it the one of the elephant print?
- 40:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah we did that one that was the
- 40:12Speaker 1: j rod. Yeah, so I'll just leave.
- 40:15Speaker 2: It sen Yeah put that up there.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Those are clean, thank you, brother. So last year we
- 40:20Speaker 1: came out for the twenty year anniversary was the first
- 40:22Speaker 1: ever retro shoe that Nike SB ever did. And this
- 40:25Speaker 1: year we're keeping them out, but doing new colorways that
- 40:29Speaker 1: we've never done before. And this one is kind of like,
- 40:32Speaker 1: you know, a homage to Kobe because he was a
- 40:37Speaker 1: big inspiration to me growing up.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Yesterday was it was.
- 40:40Speaker 1: His anniversary of his passing, and so I didn't want
- 40:43Speaker 1: to do the standard like you know, Laker color obvious.
- 40:46Speaker 1: So we thought about it and we went back to
- 40:49Speaker 1: the twenty ten All Star jerseys of the West. Yeah,
- 40:53Speaker 1: and kind of did this shoe that colorway, kind of
- 40:56Speaker 1: like just just put a little little homide, you know.
- 40:59Speaker 2: To like Mama, like the kind of the the stitch.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Pattern, thank you, thank you.
- 41:05Speaker 2: No, those are clean. So when do those come out?
- 41:07Speaker 1: So this will be out February ninth, Right, February ninth,
- 41:11Speaker 1: it drops, So good luck, thank you, brother, I.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Appreciate what I'm saying, Like, good luck getting your hands
- 41:16Speaker 2: on them. Oh you should have sell out immediately.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Noah, No, well we got you. You'll be fine.
- 41:21Speaker 2: The sb's man.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm super super grateful. I can't believe, you know,
- 41:25Speaker 1: as a skateboarder twenty years later, still have my name
- 41:28Speaker 1: like my shoe, my name on a shoe with Nike, like.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Outside of your own shoes what's your favorite SB ever,
- 41:36Speaker 2: because there's been some. I mean, fuck, man, you could
- 41:39Speaker 2: go down a rabbit hole with that, like.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Man, I mean it would definitely be a dunk. Which
- 41:47Speaker 1: one man? Oh, Actually, my favorite dunk I have an
- 41:52Speaker 1: answer to that is the the Sea Crystals. The Sea
- 41:55Speaker 1: Crystal dunks, like when they were like when I first
- 41:58Speaker 1: got on Nike, they were they were out and I
- 42:01Speaker 1: just remember loving the way they skated. The swede on them.
- 42:06Speaker 1: It was just and I love the way they looked.
- 42:08Speaker 1: So I skated the shit out of though I just
- 42:10Speaker 1: kept I don't know, I probably must have skated ten
- 42:12Speaker 1: to fifteen pairs. I wish I'd have kept them all,
- 42:15Speaker 1: but hindsight's twenty twenty.
- 42:17Speaker 2: I'm looking at them right now here.
- 42:19Speaker 1: I remember these, yeah, yeah, yeah, I used to love.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Those kind of like got the you know, like a
- 42:23Speaker 2: little Tiffany Tiffany. Yeah, those Tiffany's. Man. I got banned
- 42:28Speaker 2: off eBay selling fake ones. Really, I was.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Like seventeen, Hey man, you got a hustle. Got a hustle.
- 42:33Speaker 2: That's how I got my name back in the day.
- 42:35Speaker 1: Not that it makes sense makes sense.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Not anymore obviously. So February ninth, shoes are coming out.
- 42:39Speaker 2: That's around the time that the.
- 42:41Speaker 1: All Star I think All Stars that weekend.
- 42:43Speaker 2: Yeah, that is that weekend Star game.
- 42:45Speaker 1: I think they have me going out to do something
- 42:47Speaker 1: over there. I'm not sure.
- 42:48Speaker 2: And then when is the PSL kicking off?
- 42:50Speaker 1: The PSL will be February seventh.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Oh, so it's like the same week. You got a
- 42:54Speaker 2: big week.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I got a big next couple of weeks coming up,
- 42:56Speaker 1: so wish me luck y'all.
- 42:58Speaker 2: Did you guys already you already have like set plan
- 43:00Speaker 2: for the PSL shit, Like, do you guys kind of know, like, hey,
- 43:03Speaker 2: everybody can nail this, it might be a little tough
- 43:05Speaker 2: for them to nail it.
- 43:08Speaker 1: Yes, and no, we have a certain idea. I wouldn't
- 43:11Speaker 1: call it set because you got to be pretty flexible
- 43:12Speaker 1: and fluid. But after the first week I'll probably understand
- 43:17Speaker 1: better how to strategize because it's an all new format,
- 43:20Speaker 1: so we're all learning as we go. So I think
- 43:24Speaker 1: I got my starter my starter's set, and uh, I
- 43:30Speaker 1: strategically chose everybody on my team who skates differently. I
- 43:34Speaker 1: didn't want everybody to have all Yeah, if this team
- 43:38Speaker 1: hits us with a certain trick, hopefully we got a
- 43:39Speaker 1: guy that has that trick as well to defend it. Yeah.
- 43:42Speaker 2: I always wondered, could you define what a poser is
- 43:45Speaker 2: from a skater perspective?
- 43:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I guess what some might call, I
- 43:50Speaker 1: guess a culture vulture.
- 43:51Speaker 2: Uh, just you know, but but the skate version.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, just you dress like a skater. You I
- 44:00Speaker 1: don't know, like might even say that you used to
- 44:03Speaker 1: skate and you used to be able to do this,
- 44:06Speaker 1: and you can't do anything. Yeah, just when you just
- 44:10Speaker 1: unnecessarily overly talk yourself up about it when you just
- 44:15Speaker 1: don't need to. It's like, it's not that serious, No
- 44:17Speaker 1: one's judging you that hard.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Would you say that, Like, if anybody were to say
- 44:22Speaker 2: they're a skater that the bare minim they should be
- 44:23Speaker 2: able to land as a kickflip.
- 44:26Speaker 1: No, I think I think that to be to constitute
- 44:30Speaker 1: yourself with skaters, just to have a passion for doing
- 44:33Speaker 1: it and actually just attempt to do it on a
- 44:35Speaker 1: regular basis.
- 44:36Speaker 2: It's also a means a transportation.
- 44:38Speaker 1: It is a means a transportation, But that don't make
- 44:40Speaker 1: you skate. That just means you, you know, you use
- 44:42Speaker 1: your border to get around.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Because They're like, they're the long border chicks, you know
- 44:45Speaker 2: what I mean with the dreads and the furry armpits.
- 44:50Speaker 1: I wasn't thinking of those ones, but.
- 44:51Speaker 2: You see these chicks on Vetta's Beach with longboards and
- 44:54Speaker 2: you're like.
- 44:56Speaker 1: It's crazy. When I was coming up like skaters, like
- 44:59Speaker 1: thinking about like girl skaters are like, it never seemed appealing,
- 45:02Speaker 1: but then at some point it started getting pretty right. Yeah,
- 45:06Speaker 1: so it's all good.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Yeah, the same thing with it. I feel like that
- 45:11Speaker 2: we went through the same thing with the w NBA.
- 45:13Speaker 2: We grew up and I was like, man, let mean
- 45:16Speaker 2: and then w NBA chick should start getting hotter and
- 45:18Speaker 2: hotter and you're like.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Damn yeah, which I'm not.
- 45:21Speaker 2: I'm not upsetting anyway. Man, appreciate you pulling up February nine.
- 45:24Speaker 2: She was coming out the seventh. You guys are competing.
- 45:26Speaker 3: Is that gonna be on TV or YouTube or I'll
- 45:28Speaker 3: be live stream YouTube there it is, Man, p Rod,
- 45:31Speaker 3: Thank you, brother, thank you.
- 45:32Speaker 1: I appreciate it.
