Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: December 4th, 1944 brought episode 132 of The Whistler to
- 0:04Speaker 1: the CBS Pacific Network under the sponsorship of Signal Oil.
- 0:09Speaker 1: In Doctor Operates in Crime, gangster Tony Angelo arrives at
- 0:13Speaker 1: the modest office of plastic surgeon Dr. Julius J. Weber
- 0:17Speaker 1: with a desperate request, a new face. Their consultation begins
- 0:21Speaker 1: a dangerous bargain with Angelo seeking to leave his past
- 0:25Speaker 1: behind and Dr. Weber facing the demands of professional secrecy.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Bill Foreman is heard as the whistler in a script
- 0:32Speaker 1: by Sally Glester, with Elliot Lewis, Patrick McGeehan, Kathy Lewis,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and Joe Forte in the cast. And now, the original broadcast.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Let every go signal remind you that you do go
- 0:48Speaker 2: farther with Signal Gasoline.
- 0:53Speaker 3: The Signal Oil Program.
- 1:00Speaker 2: The Signal Oil Company and your neighborhood signal dealer bring
- 1:04Speaker 2: you another curious story by the Whistler. Tonight, the doctor
- 1:10Speaker 2: operates in crime.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I am the Whistler.
- 1:29Speaker 4: And I know many things, for I walk by night.
- 1:33Speaker 4: I know many strange tales, many secrets hidden in the
- 1:36Speaker 4: hearts of men and women who have stepped into the shadows.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Presently I'll tell you of nameless terrors of which they
- 1:44Speaker 4: dare not speak.
- 1:51Speaker 2: The Whistler will bring you his story in a moment.
- 1:54Speaker 2: But first, for the benefit of those who missed the
- 1:56Speaker 2: War Production Board's recent warning.
- 1:58Speaker 5: About the tire shortage... I'll briefly repeat the facts.
- 2:02Speaker 6: Because of a predicted shortage of.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Over a million bus and truck tires during the first
- 2:06Speaker 2: quarter of 1945, WPB warns there may not be enough
- 2:10Speaker 2: new passenger car tires for even B and C book drivers.
- 2:15Speaker 2: So regardless of what kind of ration book you have,
- 2:18Speaker 2: your best bet is to use your neighborhood signal gasoline
- 2:22Speaker 2: dealer service for keeping your present tires in condition for recapping.
- 2:27Speaker 2: By inspecting your tires regularly, he can catch and repair
- 2:31Speaker 2: small damages before they become serious and ruin the carcass. Then,
- 2:36Speaker 2: when he finds the tread is worn to just the
- 2:38Speaker 2: proper stage, he can give you a recap job of
- 2:41Speaker 2: top-quality materials packed with thousands of miles of additional wear
- 2:45Speaker 2: for your necessary driving. However, if you have a new
- 2:49Speaker 2: tire certificate, signal dealers still have fresh, new, synthetic tires
- 2:55Speaker 2: to help keep you rolling for the duration. And now...
- 3:00Speaker 2: The Whistler.
- 3:10Speaker 4: From the street it looks innocent. Just a plain, ordinary
- 3:13Speaker 4: two-story dwelling. There's a sign over the entranceway.
- 3:17Speaker 3: It says Dr. Julius J. Weber.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Just that, nothing more. A dark, lean man, his coat
- 3:24Speaker 4: buttoned tightly, his hat brim pulled low, turns into the entrance,
- 3:28Speaker 4: pauses a moment... then pushes a button and opens the door.
- 3:32Speaker 6: Uh, this is the doctor's office. Sign just said ring
- 3:40Speaker 6: and come in.
- 3:40Speaker 7: Can I help you?
- 3:41Speaker 6: Hey, you're a cutie. What's your name?
- 3:47Speaker 7: What did you want to see the doctor about?
- 3:49Speaker 6: Uh, me. I want to see him about me.
- 3:52Speaker 7: Your name, please.
- 3:54Speaker 6: Make it anything you like.
- 3:55Speaker 7: I'm afraid I must have your real name.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Why?
- 3:57Speaker 3: Why?
- 3:58Speaker 7: Perhaps you'd better see another doctor.
- 4:00Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Dr.
- 4:01Speaker 6: Jay Weber's the guy I want.
- 4:02Speaker 7: I'm sorry.
- 4:03Speaker 8: No, don't get on your high horse. Angelo's the name.
- 4:07Speaker 8: Anthony Angelo.
- 4:10Speaker 7: Anthony Angelo.
- 4:11Speaker 6: Tony to you.
- 4:13Speaker 7: I don't quite know when the doctor... Oh, no.
- 4:16Speaker 5: Oh, excuse me. I did not.
- 4:18Speaker 7: This is Mr. Anthony Angelo, doctor.
- 4:20Speaker 6: Hiya, doc.
- 4:22Speaker 5: How do you do? Have I any more appointments this afternoon?
- 4:26Speaker 7: No, this man just.
- 4:27Speaker 5: This is important, doc. Angelo. Angelo. Seems to me I've
- 4:34Speaker 5: heard the name before.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:36Speaker 8: I've been getting lots of publicity, especially lately. That's why
- 4:41Speaker 8: I want to see you.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Come inside. Nurse, bring along your book.
- 4:46Speaker 6: Hey, this is confidential.
- 4:49Speaker 5: You are at liberty to take your business elsewhere.
- 4:52Speaker 6: Everybody's touchy around here.
- 4:54Speaker 9: Okay, okay.
- 4:55Speaker 6: Let her come along.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Come in. You may sit here, please.
- 5:02Speaker 6: That's it.
- 5:03Speaker 5: Now, who recommended me to you?
- 5:06Speaker 6: Guy by the name of James. So?
- 5:09Speaker 5: Friend of yours?
- 5:11Speaker 6: I wouldn't say that. Maybe he did me a good turn.
- 5:14Speaker 5: Perhaps.
- 5:15Speaker 6: You did some work for him, didn't you?
- 5:17Speaker 5: Have you seen him lately? Not for five, six months.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Then how did he manage to recommend me?
- 5:24Speaker 8: Well, it wasn't personal. Grapevine gets around. What would you
- 5:29Speaker 8: like me to do for you?
- 5:31Speaker 6: I want the works.
- 5:31Speaker 5: How badly?
- 5:32Speaker 6: Pretty bad. I'm hot as a firecracker, and I don't
- 5:34Speaker 6: think things will cool off this time.
- 5:36Speaker 5: You want a complete job of plastic surgery, then?
- 5:39Speaker 6: You're the doctor. Anything you say goes.
- 5:42Speaker 5: I'm glad we understand each other. What kind of face
- 5:46Speaker 5: would you like?
- 5:47Speaker 6: Huh? You mean I can pick my own?
- 5:49Speaker 5: With certain limitations. I can change the color of your
- 5:53Speaker 5: eyes and hair. I can change the contour of your face,
- 5:56Speaker 5: reshape your nose, change the way you walk.
- 5:58Speaker 6: The way I walk?
- 5:59Speaker 5: I can take every birthmark or scar off your body
- 6:02Speaker 5: and replace them with others as, well, well, other portions
- 6:05Speaker 5: of your body.
- 6:06Speaker 6: Permanent?
- 6:07Speaker 5: Yes, permanently. I will extract every tooth in your mouth
- 6:12Speaker 5: and replace them with plates.
- 6:13Speaker 6: Well, what for? My choppers don't show.
- 6:15Speaker 5: They're a positive means of identification.
- 6:18Speaker 6: Yeah, that's right. Anything else?
- 6:23Speaker 5: Yes, your fingerprints. I will remove them. I will get
- 6:27Speaker 5: you shoes which will increase your height and change your gait.
- 6:30Speaker 6: Kind of thorough, ain't you, Doc?
- 6:32Speaker 5: I have to be. Will you get the camera, nurse, please?
- 6:35Speaker 7: Yes, Doctor.
- 6:36Speaker 6: Camera, what for?
- 6:38Speaker 5: I need various photographs of you for study before I operate.
- 6:41Speaker 6: I don't want it.
- 6:42Speaker 5: I must insist.
- 6:43Speaker 6: I never had a picture of me taken yet.
- 6:46Speaker 5: You're going to have one now. You're quite a one, Dr.
- 6:51Speaker 6: Webber. How much is all this going to cost me?
- 6:55Speaker 5: We can come to terms on that, I believe.
- 6:57Speaker 6: And where is this operation going to be performed?
- 6:59Speaker 5: In my surgery. You will spend about five weeks here
- 7:03Speaker 5: in this house. Nurse, I have you the camera.
- 7:06Speaker 7: Yes, doctor.
- 7:08Speaker 5: Would you mind, Mr. Angelo, a few shots of your face, please?
- 7:11Speaker 5: Then your hands, torso, feet. Okay, okay.
- 7:14Speaker 6: Don't mind me. I'm only the patient.
- 7:24Speaker 3: This is a big job you've taken on yourself, Dr. Webber.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Tony Angelo is a big man in the underworld. And
- 7:31Speaker 4: what you were planning, not only in aiding the forces
- 7:34Speaker 4: of evil, but of your payment, therefore, just might have repercussions.
- 7:39Speaker 3: And what is your fee, Dr. Weber?
- 7:43Speaker 4: Five weeks have elapsed, and Tony is ready to go
- 7:46Speaker 4: forth into the world newborn, so to speak. And you
- 7:50Speaker 4: haven't mentioned your fee yet.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Better go easy. Tony Angelo is hard. He's tough.
- 7:57Speaker 4: You think about that while you're unwrapping his bandages.
- 8:01Speaker 5: Rather a fateful moment.
- 8:03Speaker 6: Isn't it, Tony?
- 8:05Speaker 5: I'll take that nurse.
- 8:06Speaker 7: All right, doctor.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 8:09Speaker 9: There.
- 8:12Speaker 5: You'll find that the slight scars will vanish in a
- 8:14Speaker 5: short time.
- 8:15Speaker 6: Now, let's have a mirror. Let's have a look.
- 8:16Speaker 9: Here.
- 8:17Speaker 4: Here you are.
- 8:21Speaker 6: My nose.
- 8:23Speaker 9: My face.
- 8:23Speaker 6: My lips.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Hey, this ain't me.
- 8:27Speaker 5: You may go, nurse.
- 8:28Speaker 7: Yes, doctor.
- 8:29Speaker 6: And look at my eyes. They're gray. And my hair
- 8:32Speaker 6: and eyebrows. Doc, you're a marvel. It's worth whatever you ask.
- 8:38Speaker 6: How much do I owe you?
- 8:40Speaker 5: Sit down, Tony. Over there in that chair, facing me.
- 8:43Speaker 6: Yeah, sure, okay.
- 8:45Speaker 5: My fee is $ 1, 000 a month for the rest of
- 8:48Speaker 5: your life.
- 8:51Speaker 3: How much? $ 1, 000 a month. Hmm.
- 8:57Speaker 6: You're kidding.
- 8:59Speaker 5: Levity is the furthest thought from my mind at the moment.
- 9:03Speaker 6: I can't pay that much.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Yes, you can. And you had better.
- 9:07Speaker 6: I was afraid of something like this.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Okay, I'm listening.
- 9:14Speaker 5: There's nothing to tell. My fee is $ 1, 000 a month
- 9:18Speaker 5: for the rest of your life. The completeness of my
- 9:21Speaker 5: job works for me as well as for you. I'm
- 9:25Speaker 5: satisfied you're going to live for a long time.
- 9:28Speaker 8: How do you know I got that much money to
- 9:31Speaker 8: pay on the line?
- 9:32Speaker 5: You have. You've been investigated. I know what each of
- 9:35Speaker 5: my patients can pay.
- 9:36Speaker 6: There's a sweet racket you have, Dr. Weber.
- 9:42Speaker 5: I am bringing it to a very successful conclusion. You
- 9:45Speaker 5: are my last patient. I am now assured of an
- 9:49Speaker 5: income for the rest of my life which will permit
- 9:51Speaker 5: me to live in luxury.
- 9:53Speaker 6: You mean with my thousand, you have enough.
- 9:55Speaker 5: That's right. And if you have any ideas of not paying,
- 9:59Speaker 5: forget it.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Them.
- 10:01Speaker 5: Smarter men than you are paying right now. Maybe they
- 10:04Speaker 5: forget easier. That's what I advise you to do. To
- 10:08Speaker 5: forget your entire past.
- 10:11Speaker 6: I suppose you know that you can get knocked off
- 10:14Speaker 6: any time.
- 10:14Speaker 5: By whom?
- 10:16Speaker 6: Any one of your patients. Maybe Huey James.
- 10:20Speaker 5: How do you know James was a patient?
- 10:21Speaker 3: I heard rumors.
- 10:22Speaker 5: I wouldn't put much stock in rumors. Furthermore, any idea
- 10:27Speaker 5: you may have of inflicting injury on me, you can discard.
- 10:32Speaker 5: If I am absent 12 consecutive hours without notification at
- 10:36Speaker 5: certain places, a complete file of documentary evidence is presented
- 10:41Speaker 5: at the office of the district attorney.
- 10:44Speaker 6: Very smooth. Go ahead, Doc.
- 10:48Speaker 5: And if by the 10th day of each month your
- 10:50Speaker 5: payment is not in this office, complete evidence on you
- 10:55Speaker 5: is sent to the DA.
- 10:56Speaker 6: It sounds like blackmail.
- 10:59Speaker 5: Call it whatever you wish. I'm only insuring your payment.
- 11:05Speaker 5: In case you're in doubt as to the extent of
- 11:07Speaker 5: my evidence, I'll enumerate the things which makes my insurance
- 11:10Speaker 5: the best.
- 11:11Speaker 6: In the world. I'm listening.
- 11:13Speaker 5: I have a complete set of your former fingerprints. and
- 11:16Speaker 5: of the impressions made by your fingers now. I have
- 11:19Speaker 5: photographs of you before the operation, and while you have
- 11:22Speaker 5: been sitting in that chair, 36 shots have been made
- 11:25Speaker 5: through that aperture in the wall directly behind me.
- 11:27Speaker 3: What?
- 11:27Speaker 5: Yes, right there. So, Tony, get rid of any idea
- 11:34Speaker 5: that my plan is not foolproof.
- 11:36Speaker 2: It is.
- 11:38Speaker 5: There is nothing you can do. Nothing.
- 11:43Speaker 6: Smooth. Pretty smooth.
- 11:47Speaker 5: It's better than that. It's perfect. And the reason it's
- 11:52Speaker 5: perfect is because I am winding it up now. You
- 11:55Speaker 5: are my last case.
- 11:57Speaker 6: You know, I ain't got the foggiest idea what to
- 11:59Speaker 6: do about it yet. But I'll think it over.
- 12:03Speaker 5: You do that. In the meantime, keep sending those checks regularly.
- 12:09Speaker 6: I'm through here now.
- 12:10Speaker 5: That's right. You can leave. If anything bothers you, come back.
- 12:15Speaker 5: But please make it soon, because I'll probably be taking
- 12:19Speaker 5: a trip.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Okay, Doc. I'll be seeing you.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Good luck, Tony.
- 12:26Speaker 7: Oh, Mr.
- 12:27Speaker 5: Angelo.
- 12:28Speaker 6: I got a new name, sister.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Sucker.
- 12:33Speaker 6: By the way, are you in with that guy's racket?
- 12:35Speaker 7: Here is your wallet, Mr. Angelo. Will you let us
- 12:38Speaker 7: know what name to use in place of Angelo?
- 12:41Speaker 9: Yeah, sure.
- 12:43Speaker 6: You're a cutie, you know. You cutting into the doc's melon?
- 12:47Speaker 7: I am the doctor's wife, Mr. Angelo.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Oh.
- 12:53Speaker 7: Goodbye, Mr. Angelo.
- 12:55Speaker 5: Goodbye, nurse.
- 12:57Speaker 6: For now.
- 13:06Speaker 2: You are listening to The Whistler, brought to you by
- 13:08Speaker 2: your friend, the Signal Oil Company, marketers of famous Signal gasoline,
- 13:13Speaker 2: your best buy today. Remember to let every go signal
- 13:17Speaker 2: remind you, you do go farther with signal gasoline.
- 13:40Speaker 4: Well, that's a neat little racket Dr. Weber has, isn't it, Tony?
- 13:45Speaker 4: He has you so tied up you can't possibly wiggle
- 13:47Speaker 4: out of it, can you? Or maybe you can. If
- 13:52Speaker 4: you can just think up the right angle. Maybe if
- 13:55Speaker 4: you can track down some of the others and compare notes.
- 13:58Speaker 4: Then you may be able to pick up a clue.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Find out something that the good doctor forgot. They'll cooperate
- 14:06Speaker 4: with you. They're in the same boat as you. And
- 14:09Speaker 4: two heads will be better than one. So, who'll it
- 14:13Speaker 4: be first?
- 14:14Speaker 3: Hmm. Well, there's only.
- 14:16Speaker 4: One you even know about, Huey James.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Yes, look up Huey James.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Or the man who used to be Huey James.
- 14:29Speaker 9: Huey James?
- 14:29Speaker 6: Haven't seen him.
- 14:36Speaker 3: James?
- 14:37Speaker 10: He hasn't been around here for months. Just disappeared, I guess.
- 14:47Speaker 10: I heard he got his face lifted. And as far
- 14:49Speaker 10: as I know, ain't nobody seen him since. Don't even
- 14:51Speaker 10: know what he looks like now.
- 14:54Speaker 9: Oh, yeah. Huey James. He's the guy who used to
- 15:03Speaker 9: wear those English tweed suits and smoke those English cigarettes. Players,
- 15:07Speaker 9: wasn't it?
- 15:07Speaker 6: That's right. Do you know where he bought those cigarettes?
- 15:10Speaker 6: I might be able to track him that way.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Why, sure.
- 15:12Speaker 9: The cigar store down the corner. Maybe he can tell you.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Yeah, now you're getting somewhere, Angelo.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Try the cigar store.
- 15:25Speaker 4: You're using your head now.
- 15:26Speaker 6: Do you have any players' cigarettes?
- 15:29Speaker 9: No, I, uh... Oh, now, wait a minute. Players, huh? Yeah, here.
- 15:35Speaker 9: I do have one pack left here in the drawer.
- 15:37Speaker 6: Thanks. Not many people buy these, huh?
- 15:41Speaker 9: No, I... I've been keeping especially for one customer. Guess
- 15:45Speaker 9: I'm about the only store in town that has them.
- 15:46Speaker 6: One customer, huh?
- 15:48Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 15:49Speaker 8: That one customer wouldn't be Huey James, would he?
- 15:51Speaker 6: Oh, no, no.
- 15:52Speaker 9: I haven't seen him for months. I used to keep
- 15:54Speaker 9: players especially for Huey. Then he disappeared. But it was
- 15:58Speaker 9: very funny. A few weeks later, this other guy shows
- 16:01Speaker 9: up and asks for them. He's been coming back regular
- 16:05Speaker 9: ever since.
- 16:05Speaker 5: Uh-huh.
- 16:06Speaker 6: What's he look like?
- 16:08Speaker 9: Oh, well, now that you mention it, something like Huey.
- 16:12Speaker 9: He wore those gray tweed English-made suits, just like Huey.
- 16:16Speaker 9: And it's something of the same build. But the face
- 16:19Speaker 9: wasn't like Huey. Oh, no, no, not at all. And
- 16:22Speaker 9: he had red hair.
- 16:24Speaker 6: I see.
- 16:26Speaker 8: Maybe I'll stick around and meet him, a fellow player's.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Smoker, you know.
- 16:29Speaker 9: Oh, no. No, he won't be coming in again.
- 16:31Speaker 6: Huh? Why not?
- 16:33Speaker 9: The cigarette shortage, you know. I can't get players at
- 16:36Speaker 9: all anymore. He bought out all I had the last
- 16:40Speaker 9: time and said he wouldn't be back until after the
- 16:42Speaker 9: war and I got more.
- 16:43Speaker 6: But mightn't he come in just for any kind of cigarette?
- 16:45Speaker 3: I doubt it.
- 16:47Speaker 9: He said he came from clear across the town to
- 16:49Speaker 9: get them.
- 16:51Speaker 6: I see. Okay, thanks.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Too bad, Angelo. Just when it seemed you were getting
- 17:05Speaker 4: on the track, the trail ends. You found out that
- 17:08Speaker 4: Huey now has red hair, if the player smoker is Huey.
- 17:13Speaker 4: But where are you going to find one red-haired man
- 17:15Speaker 4: out of all those in this big city?
- 17:18Speaker 3: You try everything.
- 17:19Speaker 4: You can think of, but the trail leads nowhere.
- 17:22Speaker 3: And the date of your first payment to Dr. Webber
- 17:25Speaker 3: is approaching fast.
- 17:26Speaker 4: You've got to do something. Figure something out. Forget Huey.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Figure something else out.
- 17:32Speaker 6: Figure something. Got to figure it out. If I plug
- 17:36Speaker 6: the dock, the evidence gets turned over to the cop.
- 17:39Speaker 6: Wait a minute. Who turns it over to them?
- 17:48Speaker 4: That's right, Angelo. Now you're thinking again. Who does turn
- 17:52Speaker 4: the evidence of your transformation over to the police? If
- 17:55Speaker 4: you can get to that guy, get him and destroy
- 17:58Speaker 4: the evidence, you'll worry they're over. Slowly, a plan takes
- 18:02Speaker 4: form in your mind. Could it work?
- 18:05Speaker 3: Could it? Maybe.
- 18:07Speaker 4: And it's worth a chance. You can't just sit and
- 18:09Speaker 4: pay a thousand a month all your life. Now, can you?
- 18:15Speaker 9: Oh, Mr. Angela.
- 18:16Speaker 6: Hello, sister.
- 18:17Speaker 7: What are you doing back here? Something wrong? Don't you
- 18:20Speaker 7: feel well?
- 18:21Speaker 6: I feel okay, sister. I want to see the doc.
- 18:24Speaker 7: But what about? He's very busy.
- 18:26Speaker 6: I know, I know. But he'll see me. I got
- 18:29Speaker 6: something for him.
- 18:31Speaker 10: Oh?
- 18:32Speaker 7: Oh, yes. You're early with it, aren't you? That's good.
- 18:35Speaker 7: A lot better than being late, isn't it?
- 18:38Speaker 6: Yeah. That's just what I figured. See you in there?
- 18:42Speaker 7: Yes, you may go in.
- 18:43Speaker 6: Okay.
- 18:44Speaker 8: Maybe you better come along. You might want to take
- 18:47Speaker 8: some more of them notes.
- 18:48Speaker 4: Oh, very well.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Well, Mr.
- 18:56Speaker 9: Angelo.
- 18:57Speaker 5: Mr.
- 18:57Speaker 7: Angelo says he has something for you, doctor.
- 19:01Speaker 5: You're very prompt, aren't you, Mr.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Angela?
- 19:02Speaker 6: I got something for you, Dr. Weber, but it's not
- 19:04Speaker 6: what you think. I got a surprise.
- 19:07Speaker 5: A surprise?
- 19:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:09Speaker 6: Your game is up, Doc. You won't get a set
- 19:11Speaker 6: out of me.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Oh?
- 19:13Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 19:14Speaker 8: Because I found out who your trigger man is and
- 19:16Speaker 8: where he kept the evidence.
- 19:18Speaker 5: Where he kept the evidence?
- 19:20Speaker 3: That's right.
- 19:20Speaker 6: You get it, Doc.
- 19:22Speaker 8: The evidence ain't there anymore, so you got nothing on me. Now,
- 19:26Speaker 8: if I decide I ain't gonna pay, there's nothing you
- 19:28Speaker 8: can do about it.
- 19:29Speaker 5: I see you. I don't believe you, Angelo.
- 19:32Speaker 6: You will, Doc. You will. Now, I'll be running along.
- 19:37Speaker 6: It's been very pleasant to make your acquaintance. See you later, sweetheart.
- 19:41Speaker 10: That's my trick.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Angelo.
- 19:51Speaker 4: By the look on their faces, you figure you pulled
- 19:53Speaker 4: it off, too. Now all you have to do is
- 19:56Speaker 4: wait around across the street to see what happens. If
- 19:59Speaker 4: they take the bait, one of them is sure to
- 20:01Speaker 4: go see about that evidence and they'll lead you right
- 20:04Speaker 4: to it. And you don't have long to wait. It's
- 20:08Speaker 4: only a few minutes before the doc comes out and
- 20:11Speaker 4: hails a taxi. You're in one right behind him and
- 20:14Speaker 4: you tail him clear across town. You follow him into
- 20:17Speaker 4: a swank-looking apartment. It's easy. He's an amateur at this
- 20:21Speaker 4: game and you're an expert. You take the stairs. He
- 20:25Speaker 4: takes the elevator.
- 20:26Speaker 3: And you're ahead of him all the way.
- 20:29Speaker 4: When he gets off at the fifth floor, you're standing
- 20:31Speaker 4: in the stairwell watching. He knocks on a door. And
- 20:34Speaker 4: while you're both waiting, you think how neatly your trick worked.
- 20:38Speaker 4: He's led you right to the evidence. Then the door
- 20:40Speaker 4: opens and you get a shock. Yes, you get a
- 20:46Speaker 4: shock because the man who opened the door to Weber
- 20:49Speaker 4: wore a gray English tweed suit and.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Had red hair.
- 20:54Speaker 4: And you know without anyone telling you, it was Huey James.
- 20:58Speaker 3: No! Your trick didn't work after all.
- 21:05Speaker 4: He didn't lead you to the evidence. But he did
- 21:08Speaker 4: lead you to your fellow victim, Huey James.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Now's your chance, Angelo.
- 21:13Speaker 4: You've got them together. You've got Weber trapped there. And
- 21:16Speaker 4: with Huey's help, you should be able to worm the
- 21:19Speaker 4: truth out of him. Go ahead, Angelo. Go on in
- 21:23Speaker 4: and start talking.
- 21:24Speaker 5: What do you want?
- 21:33Speaker 6: I see by your doorplate you're called Mr. Peterson.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Yeah, whatever.
- 21:38Speaker 6: I'm called Becker. I want to talk with you.
- 21:40Speaker 5: I'm busy now.
- 21:41Speaker 6: It's all right. You needn't worry, Huey. I'm okay.
- 21:44Speaker 4: My name's not Huey.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Yes, it is.
- 21:46Speaker 8: It's not Peterson any more than mine's Becker. I got
- 21:50Speaker 8: something to say you'll want to hear.
- 21:52Speaker 6: Maybe Dr. Weber won't.
- 21:55Speaker 3: Oh.
- 21:57Speaker 4: Maybe you better come in.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 6: I thought you'd see it my way. Thanks.
- 22:04Speaker 5: Seems you two have met. Yes, we have. So your
- 22:08Speaker 5: information was a trick to try to get me to
- 22:10Speaker 5: give away my information, wasn't it, Angelo?
- 22:12Speaker 6: Never mind about that. You did me a favor. I've
- 22:14Speaker 6: been looking for this guy for weeks. Now that I've
- 22:16Speaker 6: found him, you're on your last legs, Doc.
- 22:18Speaker 5: Angelo, I warn you, you're playing with fire.
- 22:21Speaker 6: You can't scare me now, Doc. Once Huey and I
- 22:23Speaker 6: get working together, we'll break up your racket, okay?
- 22:25Speaker 3: Hey, what is this?
- 22:27Speaker 4: Do you mind letting me in on what you're talking about?
- 22:29Speaker 6: I'll tell you, Huey. You and I are on the
- 22:30Speaker 6: same boat.
- 22:31Speaker 8: This guy's blackmailing us for our shirt, his payment for
- 22:33Speaker 8: the operations he gave us. If we can get that evidence,
- 22:36Speaker 8: he's got cash to waste somewhere and destroy it.
- 22:38Speaker 6: We're free. He's got nothing on us. And we can't
- 22:41Speaker 6: stop paying him his hush money.
- 22:45Speaker 4: I see what you mean. You and me together, huh?
- 22:48Speaker 5: That's it.
- 22:50Speaker 8: We got him here right now. Let's make him talk.
- 22:52Speaker 8: Make him tell us where that stuff is. We got
- 22:56Speaker 8: ways to make him talk. You know that.
- 22:58Speaker 5: Angelo, I'm warning you.
- 22:59Speaker 6: There we are, Doc. Don't move.
- 23:01Speaker 5: That gun won't help, Angelo. You're just going to write
- 23:06Speaker 5: your own death warrant.
- 23:07Speaker 6: That's what you think.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Yeah, and so do I.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Drop it, Angelo.
- 23:10Speaker 6: Hey, Huey. You aren't sticking up for him. Listen, don't
- 23:12Speaker 6: let him buffalo you.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Everything was going okay, punk, and I wanted to stay
- 23:16Speaker 4: that way, see? No dumb punk is going to come
- 23:19Speaker 4: shooting his mouth off and ruin everything for all of us, see?
- 23:23Speaker 4: Now drop it, I said.
- 23:24Speaker 6: Why, you yellow liver!
- 23:25Speaker 5: Huey, stop it!
- 23:26Speaker 9: Don't be a fool!
- 23:27Speaker 10: Look out!
- 23:28Speaker 3: Stop!
- 23:30Speaker 9: You fool! You fool!
- 23:35Speaker 3: Take it easy, Angelo. Take it easy.
- 23:43Speaker 4: You got a couple of slugs where they do the
- 23:45Speaker 4: most harm.
- 23:47Speaker 3: And there's Huey James lying over there. And you can
- 23:50Speaker 3: tell from here he's dead. Your bullets did that. You're
- 23:53Speaker 3: a fool, Angelo.
- 23:55Speaker 4: You came here to get Huey on your side. Instead,
- 23:58Speaker 4: you end up by shooting it out with him, bumping
- 24:00Speaker 4: him off. And maybe getting bumped off yourself. Better get
- 24:05Speaker 4: out of here while you can still walk. Before the
- 24:08Speaker 4: cops come. Weber, the doc got away.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Here's the door. Get out.
- 24:12Speaker 9: Hurry.
- 24:13Speaker 4: Hurry.
- 24:24Speaker 5: Well, this one here in the hall is still alive.
- 24:26Speaker 9: Not for long.
- 24:28Speaker 5: The other one's dead. Okay.
- 24:30Speaker 9: Here's the guy we caught running out of the building.
- 24:32Speaker 5: Take your hands off me.
- 24:33Speaker 9: What's your name?
- 24:34Speaker 5: I'm Julius Weber. I'm a doctor. I was just visiting
- 24:37Speaker 5: here in the apartment and I don't see why... He.
- 24:40Speaker 4: He did it.
- 24:41Speaker 5: Hey, wait a minute. What did you say, man?
- 24:44Speaker 3: He did it.
- 24:46Speaker 6: I was coming down the hall.
- 24:48Speaker 5: He ran out the door.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Shoot him.
- 24:51Speaker 5: I got in the way. That's not true. He's lying.
- 24:53Speaker 4: He did it.
- 24:54Speaker 5: I was just the innocent bystander.
- 24:56Speaker 3: That's not true.
- 24:58Speaker 5: I tell you, he did it. He's Tony Angelo. He's
- 25:00Speaker 5: the gangster.
- 25:01Speaker 9: Tony Angelo? That's not Tony Angelo. I know Tony.
- 25:04Speaker 5: I tell you it is.
- 25:05Speaker 9: And how do you know? Come on, speak up, brother.
- 25:08Speaker 9: You're staring a murder rap in the face. I.
- 25:12Speaker 5: I know it's Tony Angelo because I performed the plastic
- 25:15Speaker 5: surgery on him.
- 25:16Speaker 9: You hear that, mister?
- 25:17Speaker 5: What have you got to say to that?
- 25:20Speaker 9: He did it.
- 25:23Speaker 6: I'm just innocent.
- 25:25Speaker 3: Innocent.
- 25:28Speaker 5: He's lying, I tell you. Make him tell you the truth.
- 25:32Speaker 5: Too late now. He's dead.
- 25:34Speaker 3: But.
- 25:36Speaker 9: No.
- 25:37Speaker 5: You don't believe him.
- 25:39Speaker 4: Surely.
- 25:39Speaker 9: Put the cuffs on him, Joe. Take him down and
- 25:43Speaker 9: book him for murder.
- 25:54Speaker 2: The Whistler will return in just a moment with a
- 25:56Speaker 2: strange ending of tonight's story. Meantime, let's consider for a
- 26:00Speaker 2: moment the very important subject of how many miles you're getting,
- 26:04Speaker 2: per ration gallon, of the gasoline you're using. Perhaps you're
- 26:08Speaker 2: among the 98% of drivers who don't know the answer
- 26:10Speaker 2: to that question. Then, here's a point well worth remembering.
- 26:15Speaker 2: For years, more and more Western drivers who keep close
- 26:18Speaker 2: track of their gasoline mileage have been switching to Signal,
- 26:21Speaker 2: the famous go-farther gasoline. And what's more important, the switch
- 26:26Speaker 2: to Signal has actually increased since gas rationing. And here's why.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Although certain gasoline ingredients have gone to war, Signal standards
- 26:36Speaker 2: of quality still guarantee you the very finest gasoline that
- 26:39Speaker 2: can be made today. And Signal still places the emphasis
- 26:44Speaker 2: on mileage. Naturally, no company today can promise you the
- 26:47Speaker 2: same performance you found in pre-war gasoline. And we can
- 26:51Speaker 2: only hint at the brilliantly improved Signal gasoline you'll be
- 26:55Speaker 2: able to buy after victory is won. But what you're
- 26:59Speaker 2: interested in today is getting the most possible miles from
- 27:03Speaker 2: every ration coupon. And for that job, you'll find Signal
- 27:08Speaker 2: Go Farther gasoline your best buy today. Now, back to
- 27:14Speaker 2: the whistler.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Well, Angelo and Huey James both dead. And the doctor
- 27:29Speaker 4: booked for murder. Funny thing, the police never did believe
- 27:32Speaker 4: that he was telling the truth. Or maybe they didn't
- 27:35Speaker 4: care too much. Especially after they found all the evidence.
- 27:39Speaker 4: Enough evidence to send the doctor up for a good
- 27:41Speaker 4: many years for... performing illegal operations. So Angelo did do
- 27:47Speaker 4: a pretty good job of fixing the doctor. The funny
- 27:50Speaker 4: part of it was, something he never knew, that his
- 27:54Speaker 4: trick had worked perfectly. Yes, the doctor had taken the bait,
- 27:58Speaker 4: because the police found the doctor's evidence in Huey James' apartment.
- 28:03Speaker 4: It seems Huey was really the brains behind the racket.
- 28:07Speaker 4: After he'd had his face remodeled by Dr. Weber, he'd, uh,
- 28:10Speaker 4: persuaded the doctor that they could run a nice racket,
- 28:13Speaker 4: with Huey taking the lion's share of it. You see,
- 28:17Speaker 4: blackmail works both ways. Huey has as much on the
- 28:20Speaker 4: doctor as the doctor had on him. It was very neat,
- 28:25Speaker 4: until Angelo came along. The moral of the story is,
- 28:29Speaker 4: of course, that a doctor who operates in crime may
- 28:33Speaker 4: expect to run his practice into the ground.
- 28:35Speaker 3: Six feet into the ground.
- 28:38Speaker 5: Boom!
