- 0:03- It is time for another episode of Pop Culture Junkie.

- 0:37I'm buying a ticket to Lady Gaga.

- 0:42- If you do not win the beautiful ticket master queue,
- 0:47do not feel a deep sense of loss
- 0:51because you can do what I did

- 0:55But the sense of knowing really does matter
- 0:59that you're like, yeah, I'm going.
- 1:01That's amazing.
- 1:01Manifested it.
- 1:03- Yeah, I'm manifest.
- 1:04Right, I can't believe she hasn't been in Arizona in years.
- 1:06So I'm very excited.
- 1:08I'm trying to convince Jessica and Heather
- 1:09and my sister-in-law, Alyssa, to go with me.
- 1:12So just see how that'll be so fun.
- 1:14- I'm hoping that they're like max 350.
- 1:18That might be the point where I'm like, oh.
- 1:21- I think if you win the ticket master queue
- 1:25and are blessed by the gods,
- 1:28you can definitely pay under that.
- 1:29Like I paid 250 for Taylor and they weren't like amazing seats
- 1:34but I paid 250 at base price in an arena
- 1:38but she's in a stadium.
- 1:39So it is smaller.
- 1:41She's not in an arena but yeah,
- 1:43I think you could definitely do it at CQ50.
- 1:45- CQ50.
- 1:46- She's selling the tickets at.
- 1:47But then also you could get under 350 day of
- 1:52or like week of those drop a lot.
- 1:54I can't panic like that.
- 1:55I need to buy my outfit.
- 1:57I need to have like the whole thing planned.
- 1:59Where are we pre-gaming?
- 2:00Where are we taking kicks at?
- 2:02All of the above.
- 2:03So.
- 2:04- Yes, if you don't,
- 2:05but like I would say if you don't win the ticket master thing
- 2:09like you shouldn't buy them at all.
- 2:11Like from just a time they go on sale.
- 2:14- Just wait until the week of because this is for anyone.
- 2:17That's when they drop.
- 2:19So a bunch of ticket resellers buy all of the tickets.
- 2:22And then if you just wait till week of they drop them like
- 2:26crazy like Taylor Swift.
- 2:28The tickets that I got were like $5,000.
- 2:31And they dropped to like 800.
- 2:33So it is just like, you know,
- 2:36you gotta play that game.
- 2:37But I feel like you will win the ticket lottery.
- 2:42- So, I've been a very good little monster all year.

- 7:10(laughing)
- 7:11Listen, I went to go find a bathroom
- 7:13and I wandered into a women's bowling league in the park
- 7:17and they were having like a pop luck
- 7:19and so I went inside and they had boxed wine
- 7:22and I went, don't mind it, I do.
- 7:26And it was the most buttery disgusting shard
- 7:28and I have ever had.
- 7:29- It was bad, it was really bad.
- 7:31I was like, no, I want those things free.
- 7:34- It was free and I wandered into a hippie drum circle
- 7:38that the lady who was there said that they've been doing
- 7:40every weekend since 1967.
- 7:43So that was pretty cool.
- 7:45- What else do we do?
- 7:46We went to the Goth Club.
- 7:48That was beautiful.
- 7:50I took Shawna to the metal bar.
- 7:52- Yeah.
- 7:53- And it was like a DJ, and there was no metal band.
- 7:56I was quite upset.
- 7:58- I don't believe you that that's a metal bar.
- 7:59Every time you've taken me, there's like a like
- 8:02- It's so weird.
- 8:03- It's like a tone DJ.
- 8:04- It's so weird.
- 8:05Like all this entire week, they had metal bands like every night.
- 8:08And then every time you came, Stephanie came,
- 8:12and then when you all came for your birthday,
- 8:15it was like a weird disco night.
- 8:16I don't know.
- 8:17- We're not allowed to see the metal bands.
- 8:19- They said your anti-metal, I don't know, I can't do it.
- 8:22We went to the gay bars, that was super fun.
- 8:26- We ate a lot of food.
- 8:28- We went to Shawna Town, it was so fun.
- 8:31- Shawna Town and then Shawna and I had our titular.
- 8:34- Yeah, we Sunday morning woke up violently hung over
- 8:38when we were supposed to get seafood.
- 8:40We were supposed to take the ferry to Tiburon and get seafood.
- 8:44And last time Shawna was here, I was so hung over
- 8:47that I could not look at a noister, think of that one.
- 8:50I was like, I will die.
- 8:52So I woke up that morning and I was like,
- 8:54oh, I don't know if I could get on a ferry right now
- 8:56and Shawna just like blunders out of the guest room
- 8:59and is like, I can't get on a boat.
- 9:01- We're not getting on a boat today.
- 9:03- I was like, we went to some buses and walked to brunch.
- 9:07Not even brunch, we got like sandwiches and coffee
- 9:10and then said, do you wanna go back to bed?
- 9:13(laughing)
- 9:15And most of us like to bed for like three hours.
- 9:17- I was so hung over, I was wearing these sunglasses
- 9:19and I looked like John Lennon.
- 9:21- Very sexy, it was sexy John Lennon.
- 9:26- Dead or alive John Lennon, I don't know.
- 9:28- Oh, you were dead.

- 9:59- Your parents?
- 10:00- Visit your parents.
- 10:02(laughing)

- 10:06So after the break, we are,
- 10:09(laughing)
- 10:12after this break, we are gonna talk about some
- 10:14of the best and worst pop culture parents.
- 10:17I'm so sorry about that terrible segue.
- 10:19- We're going on a run-it.
- 10:21(laughing)
- 10:22(dramatic music)
- 10:25- Okay, so today we're gonna look at the mamas
- 10:30and the poppas and I do not mean the 1960s rock band.
- 10:33We are gonna talk about the best and worst parents
- 10:36in pop culture.
- 10:37So TV and film have given us some very memorable mothers
- 10:40and fathers, but who are the best and who are the worst?
- 10:44What qualities separate the warm supportive parents
- 10:47from the ones who traumatize their children?
- 10:49Mufasa by dying.
- 10:52It's been traumatizing.
- 10:54(laughing)
- 10:55- You know, it's quite rude of him.
- 10:58- What?
- 10:58The audacity.
- 11:00What do you think makes, I guess,
- 11:03neither of us are parents.
- 11:05And neither of us really plan to become parents.
- 11:08So what do you think makes a good pop culture parent?
- 11:11- So yeah, I think the question of being a parent,
- 11:16is so complex.
- 11:18And I do think that as millennials,
- 11:21we have, are really kind of that first generation to say,
- 11:26or maybe Gen X, are the first generation to be like,
- 11:29oh, maybe I don't wanna have kids,
- 11:32because the impact that I can have on that person through life,
- 11:37and like really, you know, for lack of a better word,
- 11:39like mess them up forever.
- 11:41- Yeah.
- 11:43- And I think that, you know, a lot of that comes
- 11:46from us being the first generation
- 11:49with better access to mental health
- 11:53and really examining like talk therapy
- 11:55and things like that.
- 11:57Now, a lot of people would be like, well,
- 11:59you know, snowflakes, you know,
- 12:00that did the best I can, whatever it is.
- 12:03And I do think that being a parent is mainly showing up
- 12:08and being there and like trying to guide your child
- 12:13on the best path.
- 12:14And I think one of the hardest parts about growing up
- 12:17is realizing that your parents are just people.
- 12:20- Yeah.
- 12:21- So I think that it is quite hard
- 12:24in like meaningful TV and movies and film
- 12:29to really portray an accurate human experience
- 12:33and have a perfect parent.
- 12:34And so what was interesting when we were actually
- 12:37doing this episode and thinking about it,
- 12:39I had a much easier time coming up with the worst parents.
- 12:42- Oh my God, me too.
- 12:44- I mean, I did the best parents.
- 12:45- I could name a million terrible pop culture parents,
- 12:48but then I was like, good.
- 12:49And I think that's because to be a good parent,
- 12:52sometimes you just have to be a parent, right?
- 12:55Like there's a lot of pop culture parents
- 12:57who are just, they're there and they're not good or bad,
- 13:00which probably means they're pretty good.
- 13:02The bad ones, it's like, you know, mommy dearest
- 13:05and like the mom from precious, like you have to be really bad.
- 13:09(laughing)
- 13:10And then like those are really memorable
- 13:12because you're like, oh, they were terrible.
- 13:14But that's interesting that you say that growing up
- 13:17is realizing your parents are people too.
- 13:19It's like when I hang out with my sister-in-law and her husband
- 13:24and we're like with their kids,
- 13:26and we're all 36 years old and we're like drinking
- 13:28and watching movies with them.
- 13:30And I'm like, this is just like if, I don't know,
- 13:32our parents were hanging out with their friends
- 13:34and they're in laws like when we were kids.
- 13:37And it's, I don't know, now that we're that age,
- 13:40it feels kind of strange, right?
- 13:42And I have to keep reminding myself
- 13:44that I'm old enough to have like a teenager.
- 13:49Yeah, when I meet people who are my age
- 13:51and they're like, oh, I'm dropping on my kid at school
- 13:53and I'm like, how old's a little Timmy?
- 13:55And they're like 17.
- 13:57(laughing)
- 13:58And I'm like, how on earth do you have a set?
- 14:01Uh, okay, yeah, yeah, that makes it.
- 14:04You know, like I picture everybody just having
- 14:06little bouncing babies, but no, we are old enough
- 14:09to have teenagers.
- 14:11- Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:14And so, you know, I think that good,
- 14:17like a good stable home, like what I think
- 14:20makes like a good parent in real life
- 14:23probably isn't gonna be made into a movie or a TV show.
- 14:27- Yeah, unless it's boring.
- 14:28- Yeah, it's a sitcom.
- 14:30You have like the boy meets world parents
- 14:32and they're delightful, you know,
- 14:34and everybody knows in fresh prints.
- 14:38- Yeah, like the seventh heaven dad.
- 14:40(laughing)
- 14:41- Except for you're not allowed to do drugs

- 14:44- I see. - Yeah.
- 14:45- Good parents like you do drugs and shot us in the first.
- 14:48- Good parents like to smoke a little bit of weed.
- 14:51- Okay. - So it's good to know.
- 14:53- That's very good to know.
- 14:54- But yeah, you know, I think it is,
- 14:57like we'll talk a little bit about our choices
- 15:00and the people we wanna talk about.
- 15:02It was kind of interesting to me to look at that
- 15:05and think about which ones I thought were like good.
- 15:09- Yeah. - Absolutely.
- 15:10- Funny ones.
- 15:11- I named one that we'll get to here in a second
- 15:14that I thought was good and I was telling Andrew

- 17:57and they create one of pop culture's most supportive
- 18:00and eccentric households.
- 18:03Andrew said he doesn't think they're good parents
- 18:06because they allow their children to torture each other
- 18:11and they feed them bugs and roadkill.
- 18:14And I said in their household, that's all like love, though.
- 18:18- That's true.
- 18:19- They love torturing each other
- 18:21and they love eating bugs and roadkill.
- 18:23And he's like, yeah, but like,
- 18:25Pugsley and Wednesday wouldn't love being tortured
- 18:27if their parents hadn't raised them to enjoy being tortured.
- 18:33- Hamid, I hate when I hate when I have to agree with a man.
- 18:37- Yeah.
- 18:38- But I never thought of it like that.
- 18:41And I was like, is he just, okay, I would say.
- 18:44- I would say, I'm a child out of his family.
- 18:47- Yeah, like Andrew's thinking about about breaking toxic family
- 18:51cycles and like, those things, which find,
- 18:55but we are also in a universe where like a hand
- 18:59can freely run around.
- 19:01But I would say that a lot of people think of them as good parents
- 19:04because they like support their children
- 19:07and their like, weirdness and allow them
- 19:09to like be who they want to be.
- 19:11And so it's not necessarily like controlling
- 19:14and they teach them to push the status quo
- 19:18and not go with those things.
- 19:20So I think you can, it's really kind of like glass F.O. glass F.M.D.
- 19:24- Yeah.
- 19:25- But yeah, and in this world would be weird.
- 19:29- I agree.
- 19:30- So you like getting called.
- 19:31- Yeah, in this world, if you let your children
- 19:34like put each other in electric chairs and play around
- 19:37and I think Hugsley mentioned that his punishment
- 19:40in the last episode of Wednesday, I watched was like,
- 19:42what's it called a stretching rack
- 19:44or something that they did like, mild evil times?
- 19:46I don't know.
- 19:47They use medieval torture devices,
- 19:49but they seem to really like it.
- 19:51- Yeah.
- 19:52- So yeah.
- 19:53- I don't know.
- 19:54But I put them as one of the best parents.
- 19:56I think that if Wednesday or Hugsley came home
- 19:59to their parents and were like, were gay,
- 20:01their parents would be like,
- 20:02"Oh, how delightful my darlings."
- 20:06You know, like they wouldn't care.
- 20:08- Yeah.
- 20:09- My next example of a great parent is actually a parent figure.
- 20:13So Aunt May from the Spider-Man universe.
- 20:16So Aunt May is a preer to cross comics since 1962
- 20:21an animated series and live action films.
- 20:24Her portrayals have included Rosemary Harris
- 20:27and Sam Rainey's trilogy and most recently Marissa Tome
- 20:31and the MCU or as Tony calls her, Peter's Hot Ant.
- 20:35So she embodies strength.
- 20:37She raises Peter with wisdom and care after the death of his parents
- 20:41and after the death of Uncle Ben.
- 20:43It's really just her impeter.
- 20:45In some instances, she knows that he's Spider-Man
- 20:48and then another she doesn't or in the Sam Rainey films,
- 20:51she just really suspected it.
- 20:54- Her spidey senses were big.
- 20:56- Yeah.
- 20:57But she's always supportive of him being Spider-Man
- 20:59and of protecting the city.
- 21:01She's never like, "You're gonna get hurt.
- 21:03"You need to stop this."
- 21:04She's like, "The people need you."
- 21:06The people need Spider-Man.
- 21:07- Also as soon as child and danger met.
- 21:10- Oh shit.
- 21:11God, she's right.
- 21:14- She's like, "Get on that high service and jump."
- 21:17- Go on out there, buddy.
- 21:18Go to outer space.
- 21:20- I think she would have been a little nervous
- 21:22if she knew the Peter went out to outer space and in game,
- 21:24but whatever.
- 21:25But yes, it was very supportive.
- 21:26- Oh, she's very supportive.
- 21:27- Spider-Man go to space, but I've literally seen that one.
- 21:31- You've seen those movies, very close to space.
- 21:33And Tony gets really mad at him too.
- 21:35- I mean, in my defense, they're doing a lot, not one.
- 21:40- There is a lot of characters in space in that movie.
- 21:43- But I think that Aunt May is an example of a great parent.
- 21:47My final best parents, I chose Joyce Byers
- 21:51from Stranger Things.
- 21:53- Yep, keep going.
- 21:54- Great mom.
- 21:55So Joyce Byers is played by a one owner, writer.
- 21:58She is a central figure in Stranger Things,
- 22:01which has been running since 2016 and is ending up this year.
- 22:05So from the very beginning, she refuses to give up
- 22:09when Will goes missing.
- 22:10That's like the central theme of season one
- 22:13is Will is missing.
- 22:14Everybody thinks that he's dead and she will not give up on him.
- 22:18She strings those Christmas lights around her house very famously
- 22:23and is able to communicate with Will from the upside down.
- 22:26And eventually convinces other people that he's still alive to,
- 22:29even though the town is kind of questioning her sanity.
- 22:32Her fierce determination and unconditional love
- 22:35make her one of the most relatable
- 22:37and heroic TV moms in recent history.
- 22:40And when owner writer is just so likable and so sweet and quirky
- 22:44and I love Joyce Byers and can't wait to see
- 22:48what she is going to do in this final season.
- 22:52- I love it.
- 22:53Yeah, I am cookie lady.
- 22:56- Cookie cookie lady.
- 22:58- Joyce Byers are one out of writer.
- 23:01- Both by...
- 23:03(laughing)
- 23:05- She was on my runner up list.
- 23:07So for best parents, I said earlier,
- 23:11I think it's really hard to like capture a great parent
- 23:16or a great like family system.
- 23:20But this is by an author they who must not be named.
- 23:24And yes, I'm calling them they because they would hate it.
- 23:28- I guess they fucking would.
- 23:31- But I think that a really great example of parents
- 23:35who actually like parent their children
- 23:38and try to do best by their child
- 23:41with what they have in the ability to provide
- 23:45is Molly and Arthur Weasley.
- 23:48I think that not just to their like seven million children
- 23:53that they have, they also take Harry
- 23:55and they also take her money in quite a bit as well
- 23:59because she's kind of like this outcast.
- 24:02And I think that as a whole, you know,
- 24:05the Weasley's are portrayed as like poor
- 24:08and they do what they can with and provide so much love
- 24:12to their children and even with less means than other people.
- 24:16So I do think that they are a great example
- 24:19of, you know, a mother and a father.
- 24:21That are both really good parents.
- 24:23I do think that in pop culture and media,
- 24:26a lot of the time it's like one standout parent
- 24:29who, but both of them together are like a good, good unit.
- 24:34So I agree. I love them as parents.
- 24:37- A good example.
- 24:38- But they had to be like, and they're poor.
- 24:41(laughing)
- 24:43- You can't be rich and a good parent
- 24:45and you just suck your like, drako's parents.
- 24:48Do you love the line from Molly Weasley?
- 24:51Not my daughter, you bitch right before she kills Bellatrix.
- 24:55So good.
- 24:56- So good. So good. Yeah.
- 24:59And like actually someone who's like parenting their child
- 25:02like with the talking male and it's like,
- 25:05"No, I'm Weasley."
- 25:06- Yeah.
- 25:07- Maybe I relate to that so much,
- 25:09but because my mom does like the southern version of that
- 25:12where she's like, "A Libyan Maray."
- 25:14(laughing)
- 25:15- Oh my God, that sounded just like your mom.
- 25:17That was wonderful.
- 25:18- It really did. Yeah.
- 25:19It's like my friends do it to me who know my mom
- 25:22from like childhood because they would hear her yell at me.
- 25:25- Autumn and they always do it to like mess with me.
- 25:28And it's like, "I'm gonna get the full name."
- 25:31When I get that Shauna Marie, I know too.
- 25:33- Yeah.
- 25:34- Yeah.
- 25:35- "A Libyan Maray Rowdy."
- 25:36- Yeah.
- 25:37- So really going into it.
- 25:38- And then, you know, I realized
- 25:41when I was coming up with my other two good parents,
- 25:43they're literally the same character,
- 25:46but in different fonts.
- 25:48- And I would say these different fonts are East Coast
- 25:52and West Coast.
- 25:53- And so it's too pocket biggie.
- 25:56(laughing)
- 25:58- Daddy, no, the first one is gonna be Sandy Cohen
- 26:03from the OC.
- 26:06- I love Sandy Cohen.
- 26:08- Yeah, portrayed by Peter Gallagher.
- 26:11So he is the father of Seth Cohen
- 26:15who is ultimately like still my dream guy.
- 26:19I think, Bebe, he's so good.
- 26:21So good.
- 26:22Adam Brody, it brought him to us.
- 26:24He is such a good parent.
- 26:26He also takes in Ryan, who is a misfortune at child,
- 26:31takes him out of his wing.
- 26:33Apparently, I really like this parent who taken,
- 26:36you know, lost children.
- 26:37- I love that.
- 26:38I think that's so sweet.
- 26:39I love Sandy Cohen.
- 26:41And I love his eyebrows.
- 26:42And I remember being so attracted to him.
- 26:45- It was on the OC.
- 26:46- So hot.
- 26:47- Understanding dad.
- 26:48- Yeah.
- 26:49- Understanding dad.
- 26:50- Literally, yep.
- 26:51And it doesn't even, you know, takes in Ryan.
- 26:54And they race him like their own son.
- 26:56And Ryan goes on to live a great life in the end of the show.
- 26:59So.
- 27:00- Yeah, lives in a very affluent zip code as well.
- 27:04And so, you know, I think Sandy Cohen is just great,
- 27:07great parenting throughout the show as well.
- 27:10And just like very understanding.
- 27:12- Yeah.
- 27:13- Try to see his children where they are.
- 27:15A whole of them to a high expectation.
- 27:17But, you know, is understanding when they don't meet it.
- 27:19- Yeah.
- 27:20- So I think that makes a great parent.
- 27:22And then my other one, which is Sam Men in a different font on the East Coast is Rufus
- 27:29from Gossip Girl.
- 27:30- Ooh, I never watched Gossip Girl.
- 27:32- But I like that Rufus.
- 27:33- You kidding me?
- 27:34I was too focused on the OC.
- 27:35- I was too focused on the OC.
- 27:36- No.
- 27:37- I couldn't.
- 27:38- No.
- 27:39- No.
- 27:40- No.
- 27:41No.
- 27:42You need to stop everything you're doing watching.
- 27:44It's so good.
- 27:45- Do you know?
- 27:46- I can't believe we've never seen that.
- 27:47- Do you know?
- 27:48- Are you doing... - Maybe I'll give it a whirl.
- 27:50- You're even a Lord. - Yeah, I should go lots.
- 27:53- Yeah, even Cheryl agrees that you should rewatch it.
- 27:56Or you should watch it. - Literally.
- 27:58- Okay. So good. Still so good.
- 28:01I rewatch it like every one to two years.
- 28:04It's amazing. - Damn.
- 28:06- So maybe I'll give it a whirl.
- 28:07- Yeah and it's just iconic piece of 2010 TV.
- 28:11But, okay, so Rufus Humphrey is the father of Dan and Jenny.
- 28:17And you can't control me, Todd.
- 28:20He is the parent of that famous quote from Gossip Girl
- 28:26of Jenny Humphrey, really pushing against being parented.
- 28:31But really in this world of Gossip Girl's upper east side
- 28:35of New York, he is also the poor parent apparently.
- 28:38- Oh. - I'm sensing some through lines here.
- 28:41- No, Sandy Cohen's loaded.
- 28:44But he is not actually the rich one, his wife is rich.
- 28:47- Oh, damn, you right, you right.
- 28:50- Yeah, which now that I know you haven't actually seen Gossip Girl.
- 28:53But, okay.
- 28:54So Rufus Humphrey is very understanding.
- 28:56He lives in Brooklyn.
- 28:58He owns property in New York.
- 28:59And I'm gonna say that before I get into it.
- 29:01But he is the poor parent of all of these
- 29:05really, really rich upper east ciders.
- 29:07And he is the only present parent for the most part.
- 29:11Things change as the seasons go on.
- 29:14But Rufus, just so good, such a daddy too.
- 29:18- Is he cute? - Matt.
- 29:19- Yeah.
- 29:20- Matthew's settled.
- 29:21I need to Google this.
- 29:23- Yes, he plays him.
- 29:25I'm into it.
- 29:26If I can go over to my friend's house
- 29:29and her dad looked like that.
- 29:31Be there every night.
- 29:32I'd be having that with me.
- 29:34- Oh, she's so cute.
- 29:35- Yeah.
- 29:36- So very do it.
- 29:38- So I want a hot understanding, dad.
- 29:42- I don't want my dad to be hot.
- 29:44I want my friend to have a hot understanding, dad.
- 29:46- Yeah, I just want my dad to be understanding.
- 29:49- But by that, if your dad's hot, aren't you also hot?
- 29:53Like I don't need to see my dad as hot,
- 29:55but I inherited hotness.
- 29:58- I guess that's true.
- 29:59Like if other people think your dad's hot.
- 30:00Like I was at this job years ago
- 30:02and this girl thought that my dad was the hottest thing
- 30:05she'd ever seen.
- 30:06And I've never experienced that before.
- 30:08I'm not saying my dad's not attractive,
- 30:09but he's like in his 70s.
- 30:12And she was just like, "Shon is dad."
- 30:14I'm like, "Oh, good friend."
- 30:17- Okay.
- 30:18- Good friend.
- 30:18- Okay.
- 30:19I've been checked out a pick of Lonnie in a while,
- 30:21but I don't know if I got that.
- 30:23- I'll send you one.
- 30:24I'll send you a pick of my dad.
- 30:26(laughing)
- 30:27- I want him to get that day.
- 30:28- I'll let you know if he's hot.
- 30:30But back to the best parents,
- 30:33I got to be hot, live in a very rich zip code
- 30:37or have magic.
- 30:39- Yeah, be magical, be hot, be supportive,
- 30:42and maybe a short code.
- 30:43- Yeah, and if you think your kids are dead,
- 30:45then don't believe them and try to communicate
- 30:48with them in the afterlife until you can prove
- 30:50that they're alive.
- 30:51- Yeah.
- 30:52- So with that, we're gonna take a quick break
- 30:53and then get to the more fun part,
- 30:54which is terrible pop culture parents.
- 30:57(dramatic music)
- 31:00We are back and we are gonna talk about
- 31:05the worst pop culture parents.
- 31:08So I will go first with my three
- 31:10and I think that you're gonna agree
- 31:11that they're all terrible Olivia.
- 31:14I guess mine were that two controversial of like,
- 31:16oh, I don't know, I like them.
- 31:18- My first terrible parent is Stannis Barathean
- 31:22from Game of Thrones.
- 31:24- Yeah, writing your daughter on fire.
- 31:27- Yeah, a little bad.
- 31:29- You're only some parents' boys.
- 31:30- So honestly, like every parent in Game of Thrones.
- 31:34- I don't know if there's a single good parent in game.
- 31:36- You know what?
- 31:38I do think that Ned Stark is a pretty good parent.
- 31:43He just like Mufasa dies.
- 31:46He didn't even have the audacity to stay alive.
- 31:49But I will say that Ned Stark was probably
- 31:51the best parent in Game of Thrones.
- 31:52And that's, yeah, he only got one season.
- 31:55But Stannis Barathean is played by Stephen Delane.
- 31:58He appears in Game of Thrones from 2011 to 2019.
- 32:02He is initially kind of portrayed as like
- 32:04a rigged principled leader.
- 32:05We kind of think Stannis is like,
- 32:07oh, I can see Stannis on the throne.
- 32:09He kind of makes sense.
- 32:10He becomes fanatically devoted
- 32:12to the Red Priestess, Melisandre.
- 32:14And it leads him to burn his daughter, Sherin, alive
- 32:19as a sacrifice.
- 32:20And that scene is so gut reenriching.
- 32:23She's just screaming for her parents.
- 32:26Both of them are just turning away.
- 32:28The onion knight's there and he's washing.
- 32:30And he's just, she taught him how to read
- 32:33and he can't do anything.
- 32:34Or no, he's not there.
- 32:36He just hears about it later.
- 32:38- Yes.
- 32:39- Oh, that's right.
- 32:39Oh, it's just so heartbreaking.
- 32:42And spoiler alert, Stannis doesn't get in the throne.
- 32:45So that was for nothing.
- 32:48He just said, let's do a little fire dance tonight, you know?
- 32:52- Let's just do a little child sacrifice.
- 32:54We're feeling silly.
- 32:55We're feeling a little silly.
- 32:56We kind of want to be in charge.
- 32:58I'm kind of going to burn my daughter at this take.
- 33:00And his daughter is, she has,
- 33:03what's it called in Game of Thrones?
- 33:04Like the stone skit.
- 33:06There you go.
- 33:06She's got grayscale.
- 33:08So she's already kind of looked down on and shunned
- 33:10by most people and.
- 33:12- You know who also gave her the toy?
- 33:15- That gave her grayscale?
- 33:17- Stannis Baratheon.
- 33:19- There it is.
- 33:20- Technically it was someone who gave it to him,
- 33:22who gave it to the girl, but.
- 33:23- No, it was his fault.
- 33:24- So do you think that he's the worst?
- 33:27- Yeah.
- 33:28Game of Thrones?
- 33:30- Game of Thrones?
- 33:31- I think he might be the worst parent in Game of Thrones.
- 33:34I mean, Cersei is a terrible person,
- 33:35but she does love her kids.
- 33:37Not that she's a good mom, but she loves them.
- 33:40Jamie is just not allowed to say that there is kids.
- 33:43- I mean, I think Tywin.
- 33:45- Tywin's a pretty horrible.
- 33:47- Oh, Tywin's terrible.
- 33:48That's true.
- 33:49- Yeah, I feel like I'd have to say Tywin.
- 33:50- I'll say Tywin and then Stannis.
- 33:53Yeah, Tywin's own son kills him when he's on the shitter.
- 33:56So you gotta be pretty bad for that.
- 33:58- Yeah, rightfully so.
- 34:00- I'd be interested to hear the fans who are listening.
- 34:03If you guys wanna hit us out, then let us know.
- 34:05- Your order and ranking of good and bad parents
- 34:08in the Game of Thrones universe.
- 34:10- Yeah, who's the worst?
- 34:11Who's the best?
- 34:12- Yeah, I feel like if you can't say Ned,
- 34:15who's the best?
- 34:16- Yeah, if you can't say Ned.
- 34:17- Because it's probably Ned.
- 34:18Otherwise, it's like Rob Stark never got to be a dad,
- 34:22but he probably would have been pretty good.
- 34:24He probably would have said a good job.
- 34:28(laughs)
- 34:30Okay, okay, okay.
- 34:31My next terrible parents are the Worm Woods from Matilda.
- 34:36- Okay.
- 34:37- So in the 1996 film Matilda and in the book,
- 34:40Danny DeVito plays Harry and Rhea Pearlman plays Zinnia Wormwood.
- 34:45They're both terrible parents.
- 34:47They are selfish, neglectful, cruel.
- 34:51They seem regretful that they have Matilda as a daughter
- 34:57because she wants to read God forbid.
- 35:00All they wanna do is sit in front of the television,
- 35:03watch TV, and Harry Wormwood is more concerned
- 35:07with shady business dealings than their brilliant daughter,
- 35:11who's obviously in front of them in like genius as hell.
- 35:16Their lack of care highlights Matilda's resilience
- 35:19and really kind of is what bolsters her powers
- 35:22because they're just screaming at her,
- 35:23neglecting her, ignoring her.
- 35:26Thankfully, I almost included this pairing on the best list.
- 35:30She gets adopted by Ms. Honey in the end
- 35:33who is probably one of the examples
- 35:35of the best pop culture parents that you can have.
- 35:39So. - Yeah.
- 35:40I almost put her to, but I was like,
- 35:42she's telling me who I'm not a parent.
- 35:44She's a doctor. - She's a doctor.
- 35:45- Yeah, you know, we don't count that in this house.
- 35:48(laughs)
- 35:50Yes.
- 35:51- We believe in adoption.
- 35:53- Sure.
- 35:54- We love adoption if you guys are good at it.
- 35:55- Yeah.
- 35:56- Yeah.
- 35:57In real life, Danny DeVito really cared for Mara Wilson
- 36:01while her mom was ill.
- 36:02So Danny DeVito behind the scenes was a wonderful guy.
- 36:06And you know, Mara Wilson is a great little actress
- 36:09in those movies.
- 36:10- Yeah, she was a great child actress.
- 36:12- Yeah, in any movie she was in, she was wonderful.
- 36:15- Yeah, she was amazing.
- 36:17I do love that movie so much.
- 36:18It's so good.
- 36:19- Obviously. - I'll be two to really can't.
- 36:20You really can't beat it.
- 36:22- No, it was one of my favorite movies growing up
- 36:24and all my teachers would tell me at school
- 36:25that I looked like I'm a soldier
- 36:26'cause I had the little brown hair in the bags.
- 36:29My final example of terrible parents are the birds
- 36:34from Ozark.
- 36:35Did you watch Ozark Olivia?
- 36:37- Oh yeah.
- 36:38- I thought so. - That's great.
- 36:39- I thought you did.
- 36:41So Jason Bateman and Laura Linney
- 36:43star as Marty and Wendy Bird in Ozark.
- 36:47So they are supposed to kind of appear
- 36:49as your normal suburban parents,
- 36:52but they obviously have some shady dealings
- 36:54even from the beginning.
- 36:55And they slowly descend into money laundering
- 36:59for a Mexican drug cartel and pull their parents deeper
- 37:03and I'm sorry, pull their children deeper into crime
- 37:07and danger.
- 37:09They have really skewed up moral compasses.
- 37:13I feel like they're never making good decisions.
- 37:16They are not happy in their marriage
- 37:18and their lies and in their relationship.
- 37:20- They're making it all of their children's problems.
- 37:22- Yeah, they make it all of their kids' problems.
- 37:25And then even like not that Marty was like
- 37:27a parrot figure to Ruth in the show,
- 37:30but it kind of seems that way
- 37:32that it could be at least for a little bit in my opinion.
- 37:35They do kind of have like this father, daughter kind of
- 37:38rapport back and forth with each other.
- 37:40They start out really like with a lot of animosity
- 37:43and then she kind of comes on to his drug scheming.
- 37:46- Father and daughter and crime.
- 37:48- Yeah, but that doesn't last very long.
- 37:51And so by the end of it, Ruth wants them dead
- 37:54and spoiler in three, two--
- 37:58- Do you need to respawn on the whole show?
- 38:00- I can just talk about that as parents.
- 38:03- It does end well for Ruth in the end,
- 38:05I guess, is an uptrial.
- 38:06- Okay, there you go.
- 38:07There you go.
- 38:09Like we don't need to spoil the show.
- 38:11- I'm gonna go by season by season
- 38:13and let you know everything that happens
- 38:14in Ozark, here we go.
- 38:16- They are terrible to everybody.
- 38:19So those are my worst, what are your worst
- 38:22pop culture parents, Olivia?
- 38:24- Okay, so I have a few, some are when I say them,
- 38:29you will be like, absolutely.
- 38:32I have one that maybe some people don't necessarily think
- 38:37about when they think of bad parents.
- 38:39The absolute worst pop culture parent I think of all time
- 38:43is Frank Gallagher, who is in shameless,
- 38:48like South Side of Chicago, drug addict, alcoholic,
- 38:53really makes Fiona Gallagher a parentified child
- 38:58who takes care of his many children.
- 39:01So he has five children, Fiona, Lipp, Debbie, Carl, and Liam.
- 39:05And honestly, this man is just a menace.
- 39:08And I think he exists in our universe.
- 39:13Like if we look at like Stanisper Athian,
- 39:15it's like, well, maybe different times, certain circumstances,
- 39:19like, no, this man is absolutely like
- 39:21selling his child for drugs, like actually handing him off.
- 39:25So crazy and, you know, does some terrible things.
- 39:29I mean, William H. Basie does an amazing job
- 39:33playing Frank Gallagher.
- 39:34I mean, have you ever seen Shameless?
- 39:36- I've only seen bits and pieces of it.
- 39:38I've never actually sat down and watched the whole thing.
- 39:40- I know.
- 39:41- I know.
- 39:42- Oh my.
- 39:43- I've heard this is really good.
- 39:45- It's one of, oh my God, it's such an amazing show.
- 39:48- It's the own, right?
- 39:49- Showtime.
- 39:50- Oh, showtime.
- 39:51- But I think it's on Netflix now.
- 39:52But Shameless is so good.
- 39:55Emmy Rossum in it, Jeremy L. W.
- 39:58- Becomes famous from this.
- 40:00I mean, it is so incredibly good.
- 40:03It is the most messed up family of all time.
- 40:07Really, really crazy situations.
- 40:10Like, I think it's season five
- 40:12when you get to season five.
- 40:13Oh my God, I will never forget it.
- 40:15But yeah, amazing.
- 40:17I mean, Fiona is a parent of her child,
- 40:20but she could also probably get in there on worse parents.
- 40:24- Oh, she tried the worst.
- 40:26- She's an older sister parent, so we'll allow it.
- 40:30But whenever we first started thinking about this,
- 40:32I was like, definitely Frank Gallagher
- 40:34like doing crack next to his child.
- 40:36- Oh, jeez.
- 40:37- Absolutely crazy.
- 40:38- Don't you crack, that'll make you a good parent.
- 40:40Not doing it.
- 40:40- Yeah, it's good.
- 40:41- I'm not doing crack.
- 40:42- Not to do crack, yeah.
- 40:43- Right that time, right that time.
- 40:44- Right that time.
- 40:45- Right that time.
- 40:46- Now on the exact opposite part of the economic spectrum,
- 40:51my next one is Logan Roy from Succession.
- 40:56He is the founder and CEO of Waystar Royco.
- 41:01And he's like kind of the patriarch of the family
- 41:04is paid by Brian Cox.
- 41:06It is based loosely on the Murdoch family.
- 41:10And so this show follows him like aging
- 41:15about her retire and which of his three children
- 41:19are going to take over two boys and,
- 41:23well, I guess four children, three boys and one daughter.
- 41:28And it is just, you know, imagine the Murdoch family.
- 41:32(laughing)
- 41:33And it is the richest of rich, you know,
- 41:36tycoons of media and just terrible craziness.
- 41:40Terrible people.
- 41:42He's such a complex person too, like going into it.
- 41:47Like you see that he is this very successful man
- 41:52who should be respected, but also is, has a terrible
- 41:56like inward life.
- 41:57It really great outward success.
- 41:59And what does that do within a family?
- 42:01So two sides of the spectrum right there.
- 42:03(laughing)
- 42:04Of incredibly poor and impacts incredibly rich
- 42:07and powerful and powerful.
- 42:08So your third parent needs to be right in the middle,
- 42:10just very middle class parent.
- 42:12Yes, yes.
- 42:13And my third parent's, it's the parent trap parents
- 42:17because what the hell was that?
- 42:19This is kinda stressful.
- 42:21I totally agree with you.
- 42:22You're gonna split your twins up
- 42:25because you got a divorce.
- 42:26No, that's not parenting.
- 42:29That is the worst way they could have handled this situation.
- 42:32Like you're telling me that they're gonna go,
- 42:34they just planned on going their entire lives
- 42:36without ever seeing their other child.
- 42:39Yeah, and you guys couldn't even like claim a side
- 42:43of the country for camps.
- 42:45You had to go to the same camp.
- 42:47Like we, you're gonna ruin this twin telepathy connection
- 42:52and you're not even gonna make a plan to be like a kid.
- 42:55And they lied.
- 42:56They lied to every but they lied to both of the girls
- 42:58and made them think that they did enough sisters.
- 43:00And then they convinced the like nanny and their butler
- 43:03to just like pretend there's not another daughter.
- 43:05Pretend there's only one of them, right?
- 43:08That's crazy.
- 43:09You're never gonna easy.
- 43:10It's so cruel.
- 43:11I'm sorry.
- 43:12If another thing that makes good parents is that
- 43:15if you get a divorce, you split up.
- 43:17You at least, I'm not gonna say say together for the kids
- 43:20'cause I think that's messed up.
- 43:22But at least have a good parent.
- 43:24Cold parent.
- 43:25Love of God.
- 43:26Yeah, no, crazy.
- 43:28Honestly, like so wild.
- 43:31Like you know what?
- 43:33Also the bomb.
- 43:34Okay, the dad were used to been being bad parents.
- 43:38So but the mom is just like, yeah,
- 43:40I could live without one of these.
- 43:41Like that's crazy.
- 43:43How did they choose?
- 43:44Did they just like, I'll take that one.
- 43:46You take that one.
- 43:47No, what is it?
- 43:48Like a flip of a coin?
- 43:49Like this one's heads.
- 43:50This one's tails.
- 43:51I know what you think the mom is like,
- 43:52yeah, shit, I liked that one more.
- 43:54And whatever.
- 43:55Yeah, that is so crazy.
- 43:57What age are they when they split?
- 44:01No, but they split the babies up.
- 44:03Oh, when they split the babies up,
- 44:05that's a great question.
- 44:06Oh, it's separated at birth.
- 44:08That's crazy.
- 44:09So like in, I haven't seen this movie in so long.
- 44:13(laughing)
- 44:14You know, Nancy Myers, I have questions.
- 44:16So did they break up whenever she was prego?
- 44:20And then like it was kind of like a hand of the baby off
- 44:23to the husband like fresh out of the womb?
- 44:26That is a great question.
- 44:27Yeah, was there a lawyer involved in this?
- 44:29They write up the paperwork and was the lawyer just like,
- 44:31you guys, this is kind of messed up.
- 44:34Or did they just kind of like do this in the hospital?
- 44:35She's like, I want you out.
- 44:37Take one.
- 44:38Take one.
- 44:39Take that one and leave.
- 44:40What judge in family court was like approved?
- 44:43Yeah, yeah.
- 44:44You guys, so you never want to see the other daughter,
- 44:46you never want to see Haley again.
- 44:48You never want to see.
- 44:48So the custody agreement is 100% for this one
- 44:51and 100% for that one.
- 44:53And then when they finally meet the other daughter
- 44:56that they like never have met before,
- 44:59everyone's very understanding like,
- 45:00I have a mom now, I have a dad now.
- 45:02I would have been like, what the fuck dad?
- 45:04Like, the twins in me, you never want to meet me?
- 45:09Twins with a deep sense of abandonment.
- 45:11Yeah.
- 45:12Yeah, what is going on?
- 45:15I love that out of all of these parents
- 45:17like burning their kids at the stake
- 45:19and smoking crack in front of them.
- 45:21This is the one that we're like, what on earth?
- 45:23No, no, no, but it is so messed up.
- 45:27It's so messed up.
- 45:28And we're supposed to think it's all cute and fine.
- 45:30Yeah, Nancy Myers is a propaganda machine.
- 45:34What do you mean?
- 45:36No, this is not normal.
- 45:38This is inhumane.
- 45:39And listeners, if you are separated from your twin
- 45:43in a bad divorce situation, we want to know
- 45:45and we want to have you on the podcast.
- 45:48I bet you they're out there, honestly.
- 45:49I do bet you they're out there.
- 45:51But like, yeah, I just need to know,
- 45:53like was it a kind of like under the radar custody thing?
- 45:56And we just went like, okay, we don't have to go to court
- 46:00and do child support because like truly same.
- 46:03Yeah, he's not out of the hospital with like a coat on,
- 46:07and he just had one of the babies hiding under the coat
- 46:10and just left and she's like, perfect.
- 46:12And yes, we are talking about both iterations
- 46:15of the parent trap, although I've never seen
- 46:17the 1961 version of it.
- 46:19I've only seen the Lindsay Lohan version
- 46:21that came out in the movies.
- 46:22So we'll have to see if the 1961 version is the same
- 46:27ridiculous situation.
- 46:29Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson are hot.
- 46:32Oh, they're wonderful.
- 46:33So like our hot, so we forgive them.
- 46:36Also why we need a hot president.
- 46:39Media hot president so we can forgive you more easily.
- 46:42Like splitting up children at birth.
- 46:46Yeah, we're like, actually, if you consider
- 46:48that it's Dennis Quaid, or.
- 46:50Yeah.
- 46:52I think that that about wraps up this
- 46:57initially family oriented Pop Culture Junkie podcast.
- 47:01Yeah, just for Haley.
- 47:02Just for Haley.
- 47:03Just for Haley.
- 47:05Just wonderful.
- 47:06And what about the other one?
- 47:09I don't remember the other one's name.
- 47:10Haley and Annie.
- 47:12Annie, yeah, just for Haley and Annie Parker.
- 47:14(laughs)
