- 0:49theresa: It's called the Calling Table Sessions.
- 0:51theresa: It's a seat I keep for Christian women whose story deserves to be handled with care and whose voice is ready to be heard.
- 0:59theresa: So pull up a chair.
- 1:00theresa: Help me welcome Wendy Houser.
- 1:02theresa: Wendy, great to have you here.
- 1:05windy: Hi.
- 1:05windy: It's great to be here.
- 1:06windy: Thank you.
- 1:07theresa: So Wendy, we're gonna be talking about Gems of Knowledge, not just your, because it's the name of your ministry.
- 1:13theresa: But we're gonna talk the story between religion, control, and relationship with God, and I think that's your heart.
- 1:22theresa: So why don't you just, uh, right away jump in.
- 1:25theresa: Let's get a little backstory on, on how you came about.
- 1:29theresa: And you know, I gotta say this, 14 years, maybe at the not the best church, but your heart was so devoted to wanting to serve God.
- 1:37theresa: So tell us a little bit about that story.
- 1:41windy: Yeah.
- 1:41windy: So I had a very broken childhood.
- 1:44theresa: Mm.
- 1:45windy: And my I, I had five older brothers, and my mom was very broken.
- 1:51windy: Yeah.
- 1:51windy: We I had several stepdads-
- 1:54theresa: Okay
- 1:54windy: along the way.
- 1:55theresa: Yeah.
- 1:55windy: And I finally got a stepsister.
- 1:58windy: I was 10.
- 1:59theresa: Oh, okay.
- 1:59windy: And I, you know, I was already feeling a little broken-
- 2:03theresa: Sure
- 2:03windy: being 10 years old, just confused and kind of bouncing around.
- 2:06windy: And-
- 2:07theresa: Yeah
- 2:07windy: um, I finally got this stepsister, and I just clung to her.
- 2:12windy: Mm.
- 2:12windy: And she was about five years older than me.
- 2:14windy: Okay.
- 2:15windy: And she was already on that path of rebellion.
- 2:17theresa: Okay.
- 2:18windy: So it was very easy for me to follow- Sure in her footsteps.
- 2:22theresa: Yeah.
- 2:22windy: And so she was- dabbling in smoking, drinking, you know, doing some drugs.
- 2:30theresa: Yeah.
- 2:31windy: And I was her, her little puppy to follow along.
- 2:35windy: Yeah.
- 2:35windy: And so at 10 years old, I was s- I started doing those things.
- 2:39windy: And-
- 2:39theresa: Yeah
- 2:40windy: by the time I was 11, I mean, I was stealing cigarettes from the gas station, and- Yeah you know, just doing what I could, and it progressed rapidly.
- 2:48windy: So- Mm by the time I was 13, for my 13th birthday, she actually gave me my first dose of LSD.
- 2:57theresa: Oh, bless you.
- 2:57windy: And, yeah.
- 2:59windy: And, uh, I ended up getting kicked out of, of junior high for- Mm you know, being on drugs and doing things I shouldn't have done.
- 3:08windy: Yeah.
- 3:08windy: And, um, it was just a really tur- you know, a lot of turmoil, very tumultuous, uh- Yeah life and, and teenage years.
- 3:17windy: And- Yeah I obviously went down the wrong path.
- 3:20windy: And my mom- Yeah tried to step in.
- 3:21windy: She tried to help me.
- 3:23windy: But, you know, there comes a, a time where we have to make those decisions on our own.
- 3:29windy: Yeah.
- 3:29windy: And I had already chosen my path.
- 3:30theresa: Oh, yeah.
- 3:32windy: Because I, you know, I was broken.
- 3:33windy: So-
- 3:34theresa: Yeah
- 3:34windy: I started living that lifestyle and, and-
- 3:38theresa: You, you had trauma in your own life.
- 3:41windy: Yeah.
- 3:41theresa: So you're experiencing a lot of trauma in that brokenness, and you were fair game for anyone to lead you.
- 3:48theresa: Mm-hmm.
- 3:48theresa: Especially someone you admired.
- 3:51windy: Yeah.
- 3:52theresa: And you said your mom tried to get you out of this.
- 3:56windy: Yeah, but she owned a business, so she worked.
- 3:59windy: She had a business in the mall.
- 4:01windy: Wow.
- 4:01windy: So she was there from open to close-
- 4:03theresa: Yeah
- 4:04windy: you know, seven days a week, and I did go homeschool for a little while and was with her.
- 4:10windy: Yeah.
- 4:10windy: But you can only do that for so long, and-
- 4:12theresa: Right
- 4:12windy: and, you know, you just, I just was right back into it.
- 4:14windy: And so I think she tried, but there's only so much you can really do.
- 4:20theresa: Yeah.
- 4:20theresa: You
- 4:20windy: know?
- 4:20theresa: And when, when we talk, when we share the, the, the gory, there's always glory.
- 4:26theresa: When we share those parts of our story, please know it's a setup, when we
- 4:32windy: get-
- 4:32theresa: Yes to see the glory of God in your story,
- 4:34windy: so- Oh, oh, absolutely
- 4:35theresa: what was the turnaround?
- 4:37theresa: Absolutely.
- 4:37theresa: 'Cause you were in some deep stuff, no doubt.
- 4:39theresa: We don't have to
- 4:39windy: get- Yeah
- 4:40theresa: the detail.
- 4:40theresa: You were in
- 4:41windy: some deep stuff.
- 4:41windy: Yeah, so- So what happened?
- 4:42windy: I ended up, even as an adult, I ended up living that lifestyle- Okay and doing things that I shouldn't have done, and was still- Yeah doing drugs and, and working in a, a nightclub.
- 4:53windy: And- Yeah I just was living wrong, but I was suffering inside.
- 5:00windy: Mm.
- 5:00windy: I had anxiety- Sure depression.
- 5:03windy: Like, I couldn't sleep.
- 5:04windy: I couldn't eat- Wow for days at a time.
- 5:07windy: Bless you.
- 5:07windy: I literally was living off coffee and cigarettes, and- Wow I could f- I could feel myself just dwindling away.
- 5:14theresa: Sure.
- 5:15windy: I, I, I literally was like, I'm physically dying a slow- Yeah death from this- Wow anxiety.
- 5:20windy: It was like torture.
- 5:22windy: Mm.
- 5:22windy: And I finally just got desperate, and I- Yep cried out to God, and I- Yeah said,"God, if you're real, I need you.
- 5:29windy: Now is the time.
- 5:30windy: I need you."
- 5:31theresa: Yeah.
- 5:32windy: And you know what?
- 5:33windy: He showed up.
- 5:34theresa: Yeah.
- 5:35windy: And I had this beautiful encounter with God.
- 5:38theresa: Mm.
- 5:38windy: And he just came over me- Mm like this blanket, a tangible blanket of peace- Yeah like I had never felt before.
- 5:46theresa: Oh,
- 5:47windy: that's
- 5:47theresa: so good.
- 5:47theresa: And,
- 5:48windy: and I just, I knew.
- 5:50theresa: Yeah.
- 5:50windy: I just knew.
- 5:51windy: I mean, I'd never had peace my whole life.
- 5:54theresa: Yeah.
- 5:54windy: And now I'm just engulfed in it.
- 5:57theresa: Wow.
- 5:57windy: And I just- That's awesome yeah, I, I knew I had to give my life to him.
- 6:02windy: Yeah.
- 6:02windy: Everything changed for me- Yeah at, in that moment.
- 6:05theresa: Okay.
- 6:06windy: And I became, I became very hungry for God.
- 6:09theresa: Yeah.
- 6:10windy: And so what do you do when you know- Yeah you need to give your life to God, and you're hungry for him?
- 6:17windy: That's
- 6:17theresa: right.
- 6:18windy: What do you do?
- 6:18theresa: And you just happen to be around a church that, hey, I'm gonna go to this church.
- 6:23theresa: We don't have to name it,
- 6:24windy: but-
- 6:25theresa: Yes you were giving your all in this church.
- 6:28theresa: And- Yes so how did God wake you up that maybe this wasn't the best church?
- 6:34theresa: I'm just curious.
- 6:34windy: Yeah.
- 6:35windy: Well, I mean, this church was, it was in the culture.
- 6:38windy: Yeah.
- 6:39windy: It was in my family.
- 6:40windy: It was what- Oh, okay I had been taught my whole life what was- We know that the right way to God.
- 6:44theresa: Yeah.
- 6:44theresa: Okay.
- 6:45windy: And so I, I had wanted God so much that I just trusted the system-
- 6:49theresa: Mm-hmm
- 6:50windy: that told me how to find him.
- 6:51theresa: Sure.
- 6:52windy: And, you know, I, I became a teacher very quickly.
- 6:57theresa: Okay.
- 6:57windy: And I ended up teaching the adult women for eight years in that church.
- 7:01windy: Wow.
- 7:01windy: Mm.
- 7:01windy: But in that time- Yeah you do a lot of study.
- 7:04windy: You do a lot of- Okay prayer.
- 7:06theresa: Okay.
- 7:06windy: And I married someone who was nondenominational, and he lived halfway across the country.
- 7:13windy: So when we got married, I moved halfway across the country.
- 7:16windy: And I was like, well, I'm in the Bible Belt now.
- 7:18windy: I better know my Bible.
- 7:20windy: I better- Mm know my Bible inside and out so I can save these people,
- 7:24theresa: you
- 7:25windy: know?
- 7:25theresa: Oh, bless you.
- 7:25theresa: That's so precious- Yeah of the Lord.
- 7:27theresa: So he, he was nondenomination.
- 7:30windy: Yeah.
- 7:30theresa: Uh, w- was that the way out of maybe not being in the best church?
- 7:34theresa: I mean, were you guys even-
- 7:35windy: Well, I mean- talking?
- 7:36windy: he loved me.
- 7:37windy: He loved me- Okay and supported me.
- 7:39theresa: Yeah.
- 7:39theresa: Uh-huh.
- 7:39windy: But I just started digging into the Word, and I- Okay realized that some of the things I had been taught in the Word were not aligning- Wow with what I had been taught- Sure in all those years with this- Yeah church.
- 7:51theresa: Yeah.
- 7:51windy: And- And I knew that if I went to go teach these things at church that they just would not accept it.
- 7:58windy: You know?
- 7:58windy: Okay.
- 7:58windy: I'd be a heretic or something.
- 8:00windy: And so- Yeah um, but I started to learn to hear the Holy Spirit whispering.
- 8:06windy: In fact, when I moved here, my husband worked on the road, and I, I was all, I f- we live out in the middle of nowhere, and, you know, my oldest is 18 and moving out.
- 8:15windy: My youngest stayed halfway across the country with his dad, and, and I'm all alone.
- 8:20windy: Okay.
- 8:20windy: I'm like,"God, why, why did you bring me here?" And he said,"So you can learn to hear me."
- 8:25theresa: Mm.
- 8:26windy: And I started to learn to hear the Holy Spirit whispering.
- 8:30windy: So
- 8:30theresa: cool, yeah.
- 8:30windy: And he actually walked me through deliverance-
- 8:34theresa: Yeah.
- 8:35theresa: I
- 8:35windy: believe you personally with the Holy Spirit- Yeah in my bedroom.
- 8:37windy: Yeah.
- 8:38windy: And I didn't even realize it was, like, deliverance at the time, right?
- 8:42theresa: I
- 8:42windy: love that.
- 8:42windy: But he walked me through the process.
- 8:44windy: Yeah.
- 8:44windy: He walked me through deliverance.
- 8:46windy: It changed me.
- 8:48windy: Mm-hmm.
- 8:48windy: And, you know, religion taught me that access to God was filtered through a system.
- 8:54theresa: Mm-hmm.
- 8:54windy: I was taught in different ways that certain people had more spiritual authority- Wow that they were closer to God-
- 9:01theresa: Yeah
- 9:01windy: or that I needed an institution or spiritual leader to mediate parts of my relationship with him.
- 9:07windy: Like, I h- I was given the Holy Spirit or the Holy Ghost, but I couldn't have the authority to give blessings or to heal or, you know, I couldn't have the authority of the Holy Spirit or the power.
- 9:22windy: Uh, that was reserved for men.
- 9:24windy: And- Yeah, they
- 9:25theresa: were denying you that, dear, even though it was in you.
- 9:27windy: Yeah.
- 9:28theresa: Yeah,
- 9:28windy: yeah.
- 9:29windy: Yeah.
- 9:29windy: And, and, you know, I, as I'm having Bible study with my husband's family who are other denominations or non-denominational, we would have this big family Bible study and-
- 9:39theresa: Yeah
- 9:39windy: and we would pray for people, and we- Mm-hmm I was literally seeing miracles happen.
- 9:45theresa: Wow.
- 9:45windy: And I'm like, I'm like- I was part of that prayer that brought that miracle.
- 9:51theresa: Yeah.
- 9:52theresa: Yeah.
- 9:52windy: Maybe, maybe I can have it.
- 9:55theresa: Wow.
- 9:55windy: And, um, yeah.
- 9:57windy: And so Jesus changed that for me.
- 9:59windy: Yeah.
- 10:00windy: And I began to understand that Jesus is the mediator, that not, that man is not our mediator.
- 10:05windy: Mm-hmm.
- 10:05windy: That's right.
- 10:06windy: And through him, I have direct access to the Father.
- 10:10theresa: Oh, that's right.
- 10:10windy: That the Holy Spirit isn't reserved for an elite group or believers.
- 10:15theresa: Mm, mm-hmm.
- 10:15windy: That God wants relationship with all of his children.
- 10:20theresa: Oh, preach that well.
- 10:21theresa: Mm.
- 10:22theresa: You know, it's just- He
- 10:23windy: wants us-
- 10:24theresa: It's just- Go ahead amazing how, um, I grew up Catholic, but I left once I was college.
- 10:29theresa: But it's, all I w- and I'm, don't I hope you I don't know, y'all.
- 10:33theresa: You just have to take me as I am.
- 10:35theresa: I just don't- like control.
- 10:38windy: Yeah.
- 10:38theresa: And I don't like narcissists as a pastor.
- 10:42theresa: And then you read what's going on now.
- 10:44theresa: We need a full on force of the Holy Spirit just to live out our relationship with God.
- 10:51theresa: I mean, come on.
- 10:53theresa: It- I mean, it's so simple- Yes but it's- It's
- 10:54windy: true
- 10:55theresa: and you know, when you say you got to hear the Holy Spirit, there's really nothing more sweeter than having time with God and knowing over a cup of coffee, I call it Jesus and coffee, that you can really hear him.
- 11:08theresa: And you know- Yeah so when you started to walk with him and hear with him, was the transformation, like, automatic?
- 11:16theresa: Or was it still a journey of going through that trauma
- 11:19windy: and- No, it was-
- 11:20theresa: healing through that trauma?
- 11:20theresa: It was still- You know,'cause that's
- 11:22windy: pretty serious you know, it was still a journey.
- 11:24theresa: Yeah.
- 11:24windy: It was still the journey.
- 11:25windy: I, I don't like to use certain words like cult or brainwashing, you know- Sure things like that.
- 11:31windy: Yeah.
- 11:31windy: But I mean, in, in reality, I had to be broken free- Mm from the things that I had been taught my whole life.
- 11:39windy: Oh, that's
- 11:39theresa: huge.
- 11:40windy: And it's not something you can just have a conversation with someone and they- Yeah just go,"Oh, yeah, you're right.
- 11:46windy: Okay." And so during COVID 2020, we had at-home church for a year.
- 11:51theresa: Okay.
- 11:51windy: And I just, you know, dug into the word.
- 11:54windy: I was still teaching, but I was teaching online now.
- 11:57windy: And I'm moving with the Holy Spirit.
- 11:59windy: I'm hearing him great.
- 12:00windy: Yeah.
- 12:01windy: Well, then we go back January 2021.
- 12:03theresa: Okay, okay.
- 12:04windy: And I'm not gonna go into too much detail, but they basically were like,"You know, you can still do these things at home with your family, but you need our permission." Mm-hmm.
- 12:14windy: "Otherwise, we want you here." Ooh.
- 12:16windy: And I was like,"What?" What?
- 12:19windy: Yeah.
- 12:20windy: And that's what really, like, sh- woke me up a little bit.
- 12:22windy: Yeah.
- 12:23windy: And the Holy Spirit just came on me- Yeah so powerfully- Mm that I, I, I was overwhelmed.
- 12:30windy: Yeah.
- 12:30windy: And I was getting emotional, and I looked confused.
- 12:33windy: Mm-hmm.
- 12:33windy: And someone up in the front that I, I didn't know, a leader, stood up, and he basically told, uh, told the congregation, and I'm sure it's'cause he saw me.
- 12:43windy: He was looking right at me.
- 12:44windy: He said,"You know, I don't just follow these leaders'cause they're good.
- 12:47windy: I follow them because they hold authority over me, and basically I need to do, you know, what they say."
- 12:54theresa: Mm.
- 12:55windy: And I just got up, and I ran to the bathroom, and I start weeping.
- 12:58windy: Yeah.
- 12:58windy: And I'm just weeping and weeping, and I'm texting my husband, and I didn't know what to do.
- 13:02windy: Sure.
- 13:03windy: And I was like,"What is, what is happening right now?"
- 13:05theresa: Yeah.
- 13:06windy: And the Holy Spirit said,"They have corrupted my ways, and you're feeling the way I feel about it."
- 13:13theresa: Wow.
- 13:14theresa: That's-
- 13:14windy: And it broke me.
- 13:15theresa: Yeah.
- 13:15windy: I, I went into, I literally went into mourning.
- 13:19windy: Uh- Yeah the only time I've felt that kind of mourning is when I lost my dad.
- 13:23theresa: Yeah.
- 13:23windy: And for, like, a week I just was in a daze and confused and didn't know what to do, didn't know what to think.
- 13:30windy: And I'm like,"Well, where do I go?"
- 13:31theresa: Yeah.
- 13:32windy: Where do I go?
- 13:32theresa: Well, do you know, I, I heard- He said,"Just stick with me" this phrase once.
- 13:36theresa: W- sometimes you mourn the person you used to be, not that you wanna be that person, but that, well, journey.
- 13:42theresa: There's a process to, literally I see you, like, bound with all these white things.
- 13:48theresa: And one by one you're getting to pull'em off.
- 13:51theresa: The Holy Spirit's helping you pull off.
- 13:53theresa: And next thing you know you're like,"Wait a minute, I got authority in the Lord Jesus." No one has to have authority over me.
- 14:00theresa: I mean- Yeah that's brutal, though.
- 14:01theresa: I, I mean, I really feel for you- Yeah to be,'cause you think, this is what you think, and this is what happens.
- 14:06theresa: Hey, it's church, it should be right.
- 14:08theresa: Or, hey, that's my minister, he should be right.
- 14:10theresa: Or, that's the leader of the church, he should be right.
- 14:15theresa: And they had to try.
- 14:15windy: Well, and when you dedicate your whole life-
- 14:19theresa: Yeah
- 14:19windy: I mean, for so long, y- I, for 14 years, I dedicated my life.
- 14:23windy: I argued for it.
- 14:24windy: I debated over it.
- 14:26windy: Mm.
- 14:26windy: And, and so now I'm like, well, what are they gonna think if I leave?
- 14:31theresa: Yeah.
- 14:32windy: Yeah.
- 14:32windy: Because I, I actually had people text me and say, you know,"You've forsaken the kingdom."
- 14:37theresa: Oh, my.
- 14:39theresa: Yeah.
- 14:39windy: And then, and then I think, well, what, what are people outside of religion gonna think?
- 14:43windy: The ones that I defended it so hard- what are they gonna think?
- 14:46windy: Oh.
- 14:47windy: And so I actually struggled with this for a year.
- 14:49theresa: Sure.
- 14:49theresa: I'm not, that's,
- 14:51windy: yeah.
- 14:52windy: Before, yeah.
- 14:52windy: Some have more bold.
- 14:52windy: Before I got the courage.
- 14:54theresa: Just, just got the courage- Well- and started walking out what, that your relationship with God was telling you, or?
- 14:59windy: Well, so my daughter, she was in her early 20s.
- 15:03windy: She was going to other churches, and she invited me to another church, and- Okay and I have grandchildren.
- 15:08windy: Oh, sweet.
- 15:08windy: So we took our grandchildren to this, um, Passion Week.
- 15:13windy: Yeah.
- 15:13windy: Where they set up a Passion Week, just, you know, and you get to walk through it and experience all of the different things- Oh Jesus went through.
- 15:19windy: Powerful.
- 15:20windy: And it's
- 15:20theresa: powerful.
- 15:20windy: Yeah.
- 15:20windy: And so we take our grandkids every year to this.
- 15:23theresa: Okay.
- 15:23windy: And we had just taken them.
- 15:25windy: And so a year goes by, I'm still teaching, but every day I'm going to church, and I'm just, like, antsy.
- 15:32windy: I'm like,"There's no spirit here.
- 15:33windy: There's nothing here for me." But I- Sorry to be detected I was still-
- 15:37theresa: Yeah.
- 15:37windy: Yeah, and I just, but I c- I didn't, I didn't know what to do.
- 15:41windy: Yeah.
- 15:41windy: And so after we took our grandkids to that, um, that Passion Week- Yeah I'm sitting with my son in church.
- 15:48windy: It was just me and my son, and I look, and I'm like,"There's, I, I gotta go." Like, oh.
- 15:54windy: So I had actually been praying, and I told my husband that Friday, I said,"Should I just ask to be released from my calling as a teacher?
- 16:03windy: 'Cause I just can't do it anymore."
- 16:05theresa: Yeah.
- 16:06windy: And I can't, I can't do this." And he said,"No, just wait.
- 16:09windy: Let's just see what happens." The very next morning, I get a call, and they're like,"Hey, can you come in before church?
- 16:14windy: We want to have a meeting with you."
- 16:15theresa: Oh.
- 16:16windy: I was like,"Yes." So I prayed.
- 16:19windy: I knew I was getting released- Yeah from my calling as a teacher.
- 16:23windy: Which was great.
- 16:23windy: Yes.
- 16:23windy: Yes.
- 16:24windy: It was, like, perfect, right?
- 16:26theresa: Right.
- 16:26windy: And so I told the Lord, I said,"If I can make a difference here- Mm then put me in a position, a new calling or a position where I can."
- 16:34theresa: Yeah.
- 16:35windy: Otherwise, I'll know I have to leave."
- 16:37theresa: Yeah.
- 16:38windy: And obviously they didn't offer me any kind of a position that I could- Right make a difference.
- 16:46windy: And so I knew, okay, I have to leave.
- 16:48windy: That was it.
- 16:48windy: So now, yeah, so I'm sitting there with my son, and I'm like,"I have to leave.
- 16:54windy: I have to leave.
- 16:55windy: I'm free," right?
- 16:56windy: Yeah.
- 16:57windy: That was- And I looked down-
- 16:57theresa: Yeah, that was freedom, yes.
- 16:59windy: I looked down Yes.
- 17:01windy: I looked down in my purse, and there's a little pamphlet that we had gotten at Passion Week a couple days before- Okay about this Sunday service at that church.
- 17:09theresa: Nice.
- 17:10windy: And I looked down at it, and I turned to my son, and he was, like, 18 or 19 at the time.
- 17:13windy: Yeah.
- 17:14windy: And I'm like,"You wanna go?" He's like,"Right now?" I'm like,"Yeah." And we just got up and we left, and I've never gone back.
- 17:21theresa: Oh,
- 17:22windy: yeah.
- 17:22windy: And when we went to that church, they had this worship.
- 17:25windy: And see, they don't worship that way in this- Okay.
- 17:28windy: Yeah the church I'd been with for so long.
- 17:29windy: It was very just, like- Very- monotone.
- 17:32windy: Yeah.
- 17:32windy: And you had to be reverent and-
- 17:34theresa: Yeah.
- 17:34windy: And so we get there, and there's this worship.
- 17:36windy: Yeah.
- 17:36windy: And the lights are dimmed, and people are truly just worshiping.
- 17:40windy: Oh, yeah.
- 17:41windy: And, and I just was overcome, and I'm weeping.
- 17:43windy: Yeah.
- 17:43windy: And then they start pulling people up for baptism.
- 17:48windy: Oh my gosh.
- 17:49windy: It was like, it was so powerful.
- 17:51windy: I'm like- Oh, thank you, Lord
- 17:53theresa: oh,
- 17:54windy: yes.
- 17:54windy: Oh.
- 17:54windy: Yes.
- 17:54windy: You know?
- 17:55windy: And so I'm not saying that we don't need church or spiritual leaders- Right.
- 17:59windy: I understand
- 18:00theresa: that'cause we
- 18:00windy: ab- Yeah.
- 18:00windy: I understand yeah, we absolutely need that- Yeah body of Christ.
- 18:03windy: We need pastors, teachers, mentors- Yeah.
- 18:05windy: Yeah and other believers.
- 18:07windy: Um- Mm there's biblical roles, you know?
- 18:09windy: Yeah.
- 18:09windy: We need those biblical roles in our life, but- Yeah they aren't supposed to replace our relationship with God.
- 18:15theresa: Mm-hmm.
- 18:15theresa: And- They
- 18:15windy: kinda
- 18:16theresa: hear from God, and you don't type stuff.
- 18:18theresa: So that's- Right what I'm talking, Matt.
- 18:20theresa: Yeah.
- 18:20theresa: It's like the control and the Oh, wow, you broke free.
- 18:24theresa: So now you're someone who's broke free- Yeah from all that.
- 18:27theresa: I imagine you have now just a ministry you didn't necessarily ask for of really teaching women or teaching people how they don't have to be controlled, that they have their own Holy Spirit.
- 18:38theresa: I mean, God demonstrates His love for us in this.
- 18:40theresa: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
- 18:42theresa: Come on.
- 18:43theresa: You don't have to- Yes.
- 18:44theresa: Yeah, church is great, but you can have a relationship with God.
- 18:48theresa: Is that kind of- Yeah where you went to, or were you, like, slow into teaching?
- 18:53windy: So I became what I just quote as, like, a floater.
- 18:57windy: I was a floater.
- 18:58windy: And I just kind of started going to these different churches-
- 19:01theresa: Okay.
- 19:01theresa: Okay
- 19:02windy: uh, in the, in the community-
- 19:04theresa: Sure
- 19:04windy: just to kinda see what it was like and to- Yeah try and test the waters.
- 19:08windy: And, um, I knew there was more.
- 19:13windy: Mm-hmm.
- 19:13windy: There's always more with God, and I just didn't know where I was supposed to go or what I was- Yeah supposed to do.
- 19:18windy: So I did take a little time off, and then I floated.
- 19:20windy: Yeah.
- 19:21windy: And I ended up meeting a couple of women who were part of a women's ministry.
- 19:25windy: Mm-hmm.
- 19:25windy: Separate from church, but a women's ministry.
- 19:27theresa: Gotcha.
- 19:28theresa: Okay.
- 19:28windy: And I went to one of their weekend retreats, and- Okay very long story short, I very quickly became a part of that women's ministry.
- 19:38windy: Oh, sweet.
- 19:39windy: I had tremendous breakthrough, and, and- Yes friendships bonded.
- 19:42windy: Yeah.
- 19:42windy: And just things happened that I knew I needed those women, those people in my life.
- 19:47windy: So I've been a part of that women's ministry for, I would say, close to four years now.
- 19:53theresa: Nice.
- 19:53windy: And I'm now a leader in that ministry.
- 19:56windy: Okay.
- 19:56windy: And just watching those women-
- 19:58theresa: Yeah
- 19:59windy: and, and seeing...
- 20:01windy: You know, I, I had now these spiritual mentors of women who I'd never had before.
- 20:05theresa: Yeah.
- 20:06theresa: Isn't that something?
- 20:06windy: And, yeah.
- 20:08windy: And, and just seeing...
- 20:10windy: What they do in these retreats is they have, they leave opportunity to wo- for women to practice their spiritual gifts-
- 20:17theresa: Nice
- 20:18windy: safely.
- 20:18theresa: Yeah, safely.
- 20:19windy: And so we can learn to hear the Holy Spirit.
- 20:21windy: We can learn to- Oh, awesome speak the, the words the Holy Spirit gives and not have to- Mm worry.
- 20:26windy: We learn, you know, like, some have spiritual sight.
- 20:30windy: Some have- Mm visions.
- 20:32windy: You know, just different things.
- 20:33windy: And so we've been learning over these last few years how to, how to, um, navigate our own personal spiritual gifts- Yeah'cause we're all different.
- 20:42windy: Yeah.
- 20:44windy: And so doing, doing that really grew me.
- 20:47theresa: Sure.
- 20:48windy: Uh, it took me where I couldn't go in my religion that had me in that- Yeah that restriction.
- 20:53windy: Yeah.
- 20:54windy: And so now God's able to flow more freely.
- 20:56windy: And a- and about, it's been a, just over a year ago, the Holy Spirit's been pushing me for a long time to- Okay do a podcast- Yeah and to have an online ministry, and to do these things.
- 21:07windy: Yeah.
- 21:07windy: And I, I had fear for- Sure so long.
- 21:10windy: And, and last year we went through an entire year of identity training.
- 21:14windy: Mm.
- 21:14windy: And it was overcoming fear and stepping into our godly identity.
- 21:18theresa: Yeah.
- 21:18theresa: Best thing you can do.
- 21:20theresa: Wow.
- 21:20windy: Yeah.
- 21:21windy: And that's what gave me the courage to finally just do it, and it was Rosh Hashanah of last year.
- 21:27theresa: Okay.
- 21:28windy: Uh, God woke me up in the middle of the night saying,"Awake and arise, O daughters of Jerusalem."
- 21:33theresa: Come on.
- 21:33windy: Awake and arise, O daughters of Jerusalem." That's so good.
- 21:37windy: Until finally I woke and arise, and then He speaks a word over me about- Yeah that coming year, and I just knew I had to do it.
- 21:43windy: Yeah.
- 21:43windy: Do that.
- 21:43windy: And so I started, um, my website and daily devotionals.
- 21:47windy: And-
- 21:47theresa: Yeah.
- 21:47theresa: Good for you
- 21:48windy: and I don't know, yeah, I, I mean, I don't, I didn't know anything about social media or podcasting or anything, but I started the podcast a couple months later.
- 21:57windy: And- And you obeyed God so now I'm working on that.
- 22:00windy: And-
- 22:00theresa: Yeah
- 22:01windy: it's just amazing.
- 22:02theresa: I, I like what you said, uh,"My calling is simple, to listen, obey, and share the gems of knowledge the Holy Spirit gives.
- 22:11theresa: Truth that is meant to be lived and shared, always rooted in scripture." And the thing about you jumping on a podcast, I can't tell you how many people, the more that I talk, that know this was to, I'm a podcast, that's my jam, although I like other things.
- 22:26theresa: But, um, but they get, they think, oh, they get tech scared, or they think,"Oh, I have to have the best microphone." Yeah, it's good to have a good mic- microphone.
- 22:36theresa: But you just jumped in.
- 22:38theresa: I'm like, come on, girl.
- 22:40windy: Yeah.
- 22:40windy: That's such a
- 22:41theresa: good witness to that because I personally, I personally think that- All the social can go away, but I don't think your podcast will go away.
- 22:51theresa: It's like your own TV show.
- 22:52theresa: You can have the guests you want.
- 22:54theresa: Mm.
- 22:54theresa: You can say what you wanna say.
- 22:57theresa: And I love social media too, mainly'cause I love connecting, and I do use it for my business.
- 23:02theresa: But to meet a fellow podcaster on this- Calling Table is really cool.
- 23:08theresa: I saw that you had a podcast.
- 23:10theresa: I went over there and listened a little as I was taking my son to work, and good for you.
- 23:14theresa: Come on.
- 23:15theresa: Thank
- 23:15windy: you.
- 23:16theresa: All the, all the people I talk to,"Come on, do you see?
- 23:18theresa: She started a podcast."
- 23:20windy: I did.
- 23:21windy: And I think I've been doing it about, what?
- 23:23windy: Seven or eight months now.
- 23:24theresa: Nice.
- 23:25windy: Nice.
- 23:26windy: And, yeah.
- 23:26theresa: And- It gets easier and easier as you do it too, I must say.
- 23:29windy: Yeah.
- 23:29windy: Yeah.
- 23:30windy: Yeah.
- 23:30windy: This is the first time I've actually been a guest.
- 23:32windy: Oh.
- 23:32windy: So I'm a little nervous today.
- 23:33theresa: But- Yeah.
- 23:34theresa: Well, you did great.
- 23:35theresa: Oh my gosh.
- 23:35windy: Thanks.
- 23:36theresa: Yeah.
- 23:36theresa: Yeah.
- 23:37theresa: So, like, this is, like, the Calling Tables, and I really believe that God sets us up for stories.
- 23:44theresa: Mm-hmm.
- 23:44theresa: People will be more willing to even be ministered by you, or as a, if you're, uh, in marketing, buy from you, if you just talk about, you know, features, features.
- 23:55theresa: But if they have a story, like you really laid out a story.
- 24:00theresa: I, over a podcast, I can get to know you.
- 24:03windy: Yeah.
- 24:03theresa: And lean into the truth because the fact that you can honestly say, without condemnation on the church, it's not about church, it's about your relationship with Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit, and it's Go- you can hear God.
- 24:18theresa: Yeah.
- 24:18theresa: Those are like, that makes my heart, my engine purr because, um, I've been decades of having Jesus and coffee, but it brought me through my worst times, 26 years of living with a narcissist.
- 24:30theresa: How did you survive?
- 24:31theresa: I asked God two years after he passed.
- 24:33theresa: I said,"God, how was I able still to fight for my voice?" And he said two things.
- 24:37theresa: He says,"You fought for my presence, and you created the way God, I, created." And what I was doing, Wendy, is, um, in my quiet times that I couldn't conjure him up.
- 24:48theresa: He just I love John 15.
- 24:49theresa: He'd just sweep through, and he'd say,"Listen to the Vinedresser." And I'd write what- Mm he said, and then I'd clean it up.
- 24:56theresa: Yes.
- 24:56theresa: I'm a good English person.
- 24:57theresa: And I started putting some of those on Facebook, and I ended up writing three devotionals.
- 25:03theresa: But Wendy, I took them down because I was- Yeah not speaking truthful.
- 25:07theresa: Oh, my husband's a great guy.
- 25:09theresa: No, he was not a great guy.
- 25:11theresa: So I'm working on republishing that.
- 25:13theresa: But I say all that to say when you listen to, know how to listen to the voice of God, w- number one, you get authority over your voice.
- 25:22theresa: That's his authority.
- 25:23theresa: And number two- Yeah he makes it so clear which direction you should go in.
- 25:28theresa: You know what I'm saying?
- 25:29theresa: I mean, he's just- Oh,
- 25:30windy: yes
- 25:31theresa: so clear.
- 25:31theresa: And I, I don't know what I'd do.
- 25:34theresa: I mean, I w- I would've been an alcoholic living 26 years if I didn't have a relationship with God.
- 25:40theresa: And even- Yeah get, even get, um, scolded for spending so much time in the word.
- 25:46theresa: I mean, I could just spend time in the word.
- 25:48theresa: And I'm
- 25:48windy: like- Yes
- 25:49theresa: Huh.
- 25:50theresa: Who am I living with?" But anyway, that's another story, so.
- 25:54theresa: Yeah, well- So let me ask you, do you have a book in mind of writing a book?
- 25:57theresa: This is amazing material.
- 25:59theresa: You know,
- 25:59windy: I actually have my first book written.
- 26:01windy: My husband's reviewing it- Okay before I go to publishing.
- 26:04theresa: Nice.
- 26:04windy: I'm working on two other books that- Okay I'm hoping will be done by the end of the year.
- 26:10theresa: Good for you.
- 26:11windy: And then w- I just went on this Alaska cruise, and I was taking a nap one day.
- 26:16windy: Yeah.
- 26:16windy: Right before we were going to Canada.
- 26:18windy: And, and, uh- I wake up from this nap and I have a children's book running through my mind.
- 26:25theresa: No kidding.
- 26:26theresa: Neat.
- 26:26windy: And I told my husband, I'm like,"Uh, the Lord just gave me an idea for a children's book, and it's a s- it'll be a whole series.
- 26:32windy: So I guess I'm gonna be writing children's books." Nice.
- 26:34windy: Who knew?
- 26:35windy: So- Well,
- 26:36theresa: you know,
- 26:36windy: being a
- 26:37theresa: grandma- And that'll be- And, and your sons- Yeah sons all grown up, that's And I like how you said that,"I woke up from a nap." Yeah.
- 26:44theresa: 'Cause I think God likes to talk to us when we're sleeping.
- 26:46theresa: Personally- Yes some of the best ideas, I get up, I'm like,"Oh, was that, yeah, that was you, wasn't it?" Neat.
- 26:51theresa: I love to see that.
- 26:52theresa: Yeah.
- 26:53theresa: Because, you know, Gems of Knowledge, Gem, is that, that's the name of your ministry.
- 26:58theresa: But when you, when you operate the way you're operating, Wendy, Gems of Knowledge are, are, are everywhere because y- you know, you, you have understood more than probably the average person what control looks like and what you can and cannot do in the church, and what you can do in the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 27:19theresa: And I think the fact that you g- uh, gained some s- Christian sisters, I think relationships are so important for us women to really grow in our gifts, things.
- 27:31theresa: I, personally, I think if you, if you, if you g- hang around with a lot of girls and have a retreat, you come back a better wife.
- 27:37theresa: I wish my husband could- Yes.
- 27:38windy: Oh.
- 27:39windy: Absolutely.
- 27:40theresa: Cause you, us girls, we need our girl time, but we come back a better wife.
- 27:43theresa: C- c- can I-
- 27:44windy: No, we do
- 27:45theresa: attest to that?
- 27:46theresa: So.
- 27:47windy: Absolutely, because it brings us into more of a godly identity.
- 27:52windy: We- That's good we just naturally become a better person because we're stepping into who God created us to be.
- 27:58windy: That's true.
- 27:58windy: I never thought of it that way.
- 27:58windy: We're able to shed off the, the hindrances and the influences of the world- Okay and step into our true godly identity.
- 28:08windy: That's interesting.
- 28:08windy: And that naturally makes us a better person.
- 28:10theresa: That's interesting, yeah, that we grow in our identity when we fellowship with our sisters or our Wow.
- 28:17windy: Yeah.
- 28:18theresa: I never thought of that- It's true quite like that.
- 28:19theresa: But I do know, I, I haven't been married for four years, but I do know when I come back from spending times with my sisters, my, my friends, I feel stronger.
- 28:30theresa: They affirm me.
- 28:32theresa: Um, I'm producing a podcast for them coming up.
- 28:34theresa: So they just, like, everything you like to do- Yeah they're like,"Come on, we need you, Tee.
- 28:37theresa: Will you do this?" And you feel like, you feel like you fit like a glove, but it's a God glove.
- 28:44theresa: It's a God thing.
- 28:44theresa: Yeah.
- 28:44theresa: Amen, 100%.
- 28:46theresa: 'Cause you,'cause you can have friends and they, they don't, they, they tolerate you, they don't celebrate you.
- 28:51theresa: And I think that's-
- 28:52windy: Yes
- 28:53theresa: um, I, I, I gotta write this book, but, um- I, I, uh, the book will be titled How to Win the War on Your Voice.
- 29:03theresa: I'm so glad my husband died.
- 29:05theresa: Now, I'm all for the covenant of marriage, don't get me wrong.
- 29:09theresa: I'm all for it, and I'm not against guys.
- 29:11theresa: Good-looking guy, good-looking truck goes by, my head's gonna turn, my heart's gonna skip a beat- over the truck.
- 29:18theresa: But the reason I say that- is I was in the midst, get this, I was in the midst of a radio career using my voice, and six years, the war began.
- 29:29theresa: I got married.
- 29:31theresa: And when- Mm anyone who knows about the trauma, and, you know, you probably came up against a lot of narcissists, I'm sorry, in that church.
- 29:38theresa: And y- and you probably didn't even realize how, how torturous that is.
- 29:43theresa: But if I just can turn this around to us all, we need, m- people need to be free and understand what they are in.
- 29:53theresa: And I'm sorry, it's in church, it's at your work sometimes, and I just, I just see a lot of women suffering, and then finally the light bulb- Yeah goes off.
- 30:02theresa: And they get out.
- 30:03theresa: Like, I think it was the grace of God that you were able to get out, because you're, you got an obedient heart and you got a loving heart.
- 30:10theresa: It's hard when you've developed, uh, spent all your time.
- 30:15theresa: And God had to release you like that, uh,'cause you just got that- Mm-hmm I mean, when I read that even in your bio, I'm like, what a loving h- heart for God to be stuck in that and then finally to be able to be released.
- 30:29theresa: I think that was a miraculous release, too.
- 30:32windy: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 30:33windy: Yeah.
- 30:33windy: It's his love and mercy.
- 30:35windy: You know, all through the word it says he has unfailing love for us.
- 30:38windy: Mm-hmm.
- 30:38windy: And he will meet us where we are.
- 30:40theresa: Amen.
- 30:41windy: So he, he meets us where we are, and it doesn't matter- Yeah what we've done or where we are, he will meet us there if we- That's so good open ourselves to him.
- 30:50windy: Yeah.
- 30:50windy: If we turn to him.
- 30:52theresa: Um- What would you say to a young woman who may be still in the midst of the process and she- Mm doesn't know what, really what to do to get out of the little bondage she may in?
- 31:02theresa: It may be a relationship, it may be a church.
- 31:05theresa: Any, any- Yeah gems of knowledge just off your heart?
- 31:10windy: Well, if you're in an environment where you're being taught that someone else has greater access to God-
- 31:17theresa: Mm
- 31:18windy: than you do- Mm that you need another human being to mediate your relationship with God-
- 31:25theresa: Mm
- 31:25windy: or the Holy Spirit-
- 31:26theresa: Yeah
- 31:27windy: or his gifts, powers, and authority that Jesus promises us in Galatians 3:28 that we are all one in Christ-
- 31:35theresa: Yeah
- 31:38windy: Then please go search the scriptures.
- 31:42windy: Yeah.
- 31:42windy: Search the scriptures for yourself.
- 31:45windy: Mm.
- 31:45windy: Find out the true character of God.
- 31:48theresa: Right.
- 31:49windy: Because Jesus defines eternal life relationally in John 17:3 when He says,"And this is the way to have eternal life, to know you-
- 32:01theresa: Come on
- 32:01windy: the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent." We have to know Him.
- 32:06windy: Yeah.
- 32:06windy: And the way to know Him is through the Word.
- 32:09windy: Yeah.
- 32:09windy: Reading your Bible, reading the Word, getting to know who He is.
- 32:13windy: And then as we do that, and we prayerfully do that, then as He said, as Jesus says in John 10, verses 14 and, and 27, He says,"I am the good shepherd."
- 32:25theresa: Mm.
- 32:25windy: I know my sheep and they know me."
- 32:28theresa: Yes.
- 32:28windy: My sheep listen to my voice."
- 32:31theresa: Yes.
- 32:32windy: I know them and they follow me." That He will begin to speak to us through the Holy Spirit- Yeah and we will learn- Yes to hear Him.
- 32:41windy: Because in Revelations 3:20, He says,"Behold, I stand at the door and knock."
- 32:48theresa: Come on.
- 32:48windy: If, if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into him and dine with him-
- 32:56theresa: Yeah
- 32:56windy: and him with me."
- 32:58theresa: Amen.
- 32:59theresa: That's so good.
- 32:59windy: There is nothing more precious to God-
- 33:02theresa: Yeah
- 33:03windy: than you.
- 33:04theresa: Amen.
- 33:04theresa: That's so good.
- 33:05theresa: And you know, when, when we talk about getting in the Word, you know, some, and people can get overwhelmed, but sometimes just say,"God, speak to me," or listen.
- 33:15theresa: He may want to say something- Yeah to you.
- 33:17theresa: I see so many women- Absolutely get really hung up on,"Oh, I didn't read my 10 chapters." Spend time with Him.
- 33:22theresa: He'll tell you.
- 33:23theresa: Spend time.
- 33:23theresa: Yeah.
- 33:23theresa: A lot of times He'll tell you where to read, you know?
- 33:25theresa: So, and it's good to have the Word, like, to flow out like Wendy just did.
- 33:29theresa: I, it's so good to be able to speak the Word,'cause that ultimately is gonna keep the bondage away, and you'll be able to walk.
- 33:35theresa: 'Cause God came that we'd have abundant life.
- 33:39theresa: Abundant life.
- 33:40theresa: Yeah.
- 33:40theresa: So.
- 33:40windy: Yes.
- 33:41theresa: Wendy, I've so- Yes enjoyed this.
- 33:42theresa: Now, um, gemsofknowledge.com
- 33:46windy: Mm-hmm.
