- 0:17to be able to join you on a new week as we are going to continue
- 0:22reading through the Gospel of Luke this week.
- 0:26No matter what is on the horizon, no matter how good or
- 0:30Challenging. Your weekend has been no matter
- 0:31whether you are, well, chilling out on a public holiday.
- 0:35Like I am. It is time to put that all down,
- 0:40and come before. God.
- 0:42In fact, we read the story and the gospel about God revealing
- 0:47himself to us through his son. So join me everyone.
- 0:51As we are going to read together, Luke Chapter 7,
- 1:06When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people, he
- 1:09returned to Capernaum at that time.
- 1:13The highly valued slave of a Roman officer was sick and near
- 1:16death. When the officer heard about
- 1:19Jesus, he sent some respected Jewish Elders to ask him to come
- 1:23and heal his slave. So they earnestly begged, Jesus,
- 1:26to help the man. If anyone deserves your help, he
- 1:30does, they said for, he loves the Jewish people and even built
- 1:34a synagogue for us. Us.
- 1:36So, Jesus went with them, but just before they arrived at the
- 1:39house, the officer sent some friends to say.
- 1:42Lord, don't trouble yourself by coming to my home.
- 1:46For I am not worthy of such an honor.
- 1:49I am not even worthy to come and meet you just say the word from
- 1:53where you are, and my servant will be healed.
- 1:55I know this because I am under the authority of my Superior
- 1:59officers and I have authority over my soldiers.
- 2:02I only need to say go And they go or come and they come and if
- 2:08I say to my slaves do this, they do it.
- 2:13When Jesus heard this, he was amazed turning to the crowd.
- 2:17That was following him. He said, I tell you, I haven't
- 2:21seen Faith like this, in all Israel.
- 2:25And when the officers friends returned to his house, they
- 2:28found the slave completely healed.
- 2:31Soon. Afterward, Jesus went with his
- 2:34disciples to the Village of nain and a large crowd, followed him.
- 2:39The funeral procession was coming out as he approached the
- 2:41Village Gate, the young man who had died was a Widow's only son
- 2:47and a large crowd from the village was with her.
- 2:50When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion,
- 2:55don't cry. He said, then he walked over to
- 2:58the coffin and touched it and the bearers stopped young man.
- 3:03He said, I tell you get up then the dead boy sat up and began to
- 3:11talk and Jesus gave him back to his mother, great fear swept the
- 3:16crowd. And they praised God saying a
- 3:19mighty Prophet has Has risen Among Us and God has visited his
- 3:23people today and the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea
- 3:28and the surrounding Countryside. The Disciples of John, the
- 3:32Baptist told John about everything Jesus was doing.
- 3:36So John called for two of his disciples and he sent them to
- 3:40the Lord to ask him. Are you the Messiah we've been
- 3:43expecting or should we keep looking for someone else?
- 3:47John's true. Disciples Found Jesus and said
- 3:49to him John the Baptist sent us to ask if are you the Messiah
- 3:53we've been expecting or should we be looking for someone else?
- 3:58At that very time. Jesus cured, many people of
- 4:01their diseases illnesses and evil spirits, and He restored
- 4:05sight to many who are blind. Then he told John's disciples go
- 4:11back to John and tell him what you have seen and heard the
- 4:15blind. See the lame walk.
- 4:18Those with Leprosy are cured, the deaf hear the dead are
- 4:22raised to life and the good news is being preached to the poor.
- 4:26and he added God, blesses, those who do not fall away because of
- 4:31me, After John's disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to
- 4:36the crowds. What kind of man?
- 4:40Did you go into the Wilderness to see?
- 4:42Was he a week? Read swayed by every breath of
- 4:45wind? Or were you expecting to see a
- 4:48man dressed in expensive clothes?
- 4:50Know people who are beautiful clothes and live in luxury.
- 4:54I found in palaces were you looking for a profit?
- 4:58Yes. And he is more than a prophet.
- 5:01John is the Man to whom the scriptures refer when they say
- 5:05look, I am sending a messenger ahead of you and he will prepare
- 5:10your way before you I tell you of all who have ever lived, none
- 5:16is greater than John yet. Even the least person in the
- 5:20kingdom of God is greater than he is.
- 5:23When they heard this, all the people, even the tax collectors,
- 5:27agreed, that God's way was, right?
- 5:29For, they had been baptized by John, but the Pharisees and
- 5:33experts in religious law rejected.
- 5:35God's plan for them, for they had refused, John's baptism.
- 5:40To what can I compare the people of this generation?
- 5:43Jesus asked, how can I describe them?
- 5:46They are like children playing a game in the Public Square.
- 5:50They complain to their friends. We played wedding songs and you
- 5:54didn't dance. So we played funeral songs and
- 5:57you didn't weep for John, the Baptist didn't spend his time
- 6:01eating bread nor drinking wine and you say he's possessed by a
- 6:05demon, the son of man on the other hand feasts and drinks.
- 6:10It's and you say, he's a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of
- 6:14tax collectors and other Sinners.
- 6:16But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow
- 6:20it. One of the Pharisees asked Jesus
- 6:24to have dinner with him. So Jesus went to his home and
- 6:28sat down to eat. But a certain immoral woman from
- 6:32the city heard. He was eating there.
- 6:34She brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with
- 6:37expensive perfume. Then she knelt behind him at his
- 6:41feet weeping. Her tears fell on his feet and
- 6:46she wiped them off with her hair.
- 6:48Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.
- 6:53When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to
- 6:57himself. If this man were a prophet, he
- 7:00would know what kind of woman is touching him.
- 7:03She's a sinner, then Jesus answered his thoughts, Simon.
- 7:08He said to the Pharisee, I have something to say to you.
- 7:12Go ahead, teacher, Simon replied.
- 7:15Then Jesus told him this story. A man loaned money to two people
- 7:20500 pieces of silver to 1 and 50 pieces to the other but neither
- 7:26of them could repay him. So he kindly forgave them.
- 7:29Both canceling their deaths. Who do you suppose loved him
- 7:32more after that? Simon answered.
- 7:36I suppose the one for whom he canceled the large debt.
- 7:40That's right. Jesus said then he turned to the
- 7:43woman and said to Simon look at this woman kneeling here.
- 7:48When I entered your home, you didn't offer me water to wash
- 7:51the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears
- 7:55and wiped them with her hair. You didn't greet me with a kiss,
- 8:00but from the time, I first came in, she has not stopped kissing
- 8:03my feet. You neglected, the courtesy of
- 8:06olive oil to anoint my head but she has anointed my feet with
- 8:10rare perfume. I tell you her sins and they are
- 8:15many have been forgiven. So she She has shown me much
- 8:19love, but a person who is Forgiven, little shows only a
- 8:23little love. Then Jesus said to the woman,
- 8:26your sins are forgiven. The men at the table said among
- 8:30themselves who is this? Man that he goes around
- 8:34forgiving sins and Jesus said to the woman your faith has saved
- 8:40you go in peace. Jesus, as we read this gospel
- 8:55message, we are struck by how sinful we are.
- 9:01Sinful often in ways like Simon, when we think that we are on the
- 9:07straight and narrow and we are doing a great job at following
- 9:11you, But we fail and our motivations are crooked and our
- 9:16hearts or wayward. Lord, thank you that you forgive
- 9:21us anyway, even when we are hopeless.
- 9:24Especially when we are hopeless. Thank you, Jesus, for your love
- 9:29and your forgiveness, help us always be acutely aware of what
- 9:35you offer us even in our depraved state.
- 9:40We love you and we worship you, and we are so grateful for all
- 9:45the Forgiveness that you've offered us.
- 9:48It's in your name. We pray Jesus.
- 9:51Amen. It's in your name.
- 9:49We pray Jesus. Amen.
