- 0:29I Hate Talking: Alright, we are here with episode 2 of I Hate Talking and we again are going to start with our word or phrase of the episode and this episode, we actually have a double feature with two different words.
- 0:45I Hate Talking: The first is ketogenesis.
- 0:48I Hate Talking: Ketogenesis is the metabolic pathway that produces ketone bodies which provide an alternative form of energy for the body.
- 0:56I Hate Talking: And for our second word of the episode, cryptocurrency, a digital currency in which transactions are verified and records are maintained by a decentralized system using cryptography rather than by a centralized authority, and those are our two words of the episode, ketogenesis and cryptocurrency.
- 1:21I Hate Talking: Hm.
- 1:21I Hate Talking: So, I don't know these words going into this conversation, or I know them, I do not know what words we're talking about.
- 1:28I Hate Talking: I do like that we have 2 words for our 2nd episode.
- 1:32I Hate Talking: So, for our 3rd episode, will you come up with 3 words that describe me?
- 1:38I Hate Talking: Cause these two words describe your hobbies very well.
- 1:42I Hate Talking: They do describe some of my hobbies very well.
- 1:45I Hate Talking: Um, I think that for our 3rd episode, which uh will be around where, where people hate talking, uh, maybe we could come up with 3 locations, uh, of where potentially people hate talking or maybe some words or phrases related to those.
- 2:02I Hate Talking: But I think we've already planned on having at least more than 100 episodes because we've named these episodes with leading zeros, uh 001, 002.
- 2:15I Hate Talking: Uh, so I think if we continue that pattern too long, we may spend the entire episode just doing word and phrase definitions, which not sure people are going to go for that.
- 2:26I Hate Talking: It's true.
- 2:27I Hate Talking: You can just listen to the audio of a dictionary at that point.
- 2:31I Hate Talking: I am.
- 2:33I Hate Talking: You actually curious if there's an audiobook of the dictionary, and I'm going to be checking on that uh to see if that's available on Audible or Libby immediately after we finish recording.
- 2:45I Hate Talking: Awesome, have fun with that.
- 2:46I Hate Talking: I will not be doing that with you.
- 2:48I Hate Talking: Alright, excellent.
- 2:50I Hate Talking: So in this episode we are going to be talking about uh some of the additional topics that people hate talking about.
- 2:58I Hate Talking: We've already started touching on some of these in our first episode with regards to maybe some universal topics that are maybe hated or at least avoided.
- 3:09I Hate Talking: Uh, around perhaps religion or politics, uh, but we're going to get into some more specific topics in this episode in terms of topics that people hate talking about.
- 3:22I Hate Talking: So before we do that, what are some topics that people love talking about?
- 3:26I Hate Talking: Oh, I think people love talking about themselves.
- 3:30I Hate Talking: Um, people often love talking about their children if they're, they have young children.
- 3:38I Hate Talking: Um, possibly they love talking about their hobbies, if they're a gardener, if you are a keto person, or if you do.
- 3:49I Hate Talking: Um, some kind of workout routine, that's usually very quickly discussed when you meet somebody.
- 3:56I Hate Talking: Yeah, I think that is true, uh, that people do enjoy talking about themselves or about topics that they themselves enjoy, but what about the counter party that has to then discuss these things with that person?
- 4:14I Hate Talking: Do they necessarily love those topics too?
- 4:16I Hate Talking: It depends on what situation you're in and I'd say, often no.
- 4:22I Hate Talking: At least in our culture where we are.
- 4:25I Hate Talking: In the middle of America, is where we currently live.
- 4:30I Hate Talking: We stand there and we politely listen and not alone.
- 4:34I Hate Talking: And then say, have a great day, or in our culture, have a blessed day, and we walk away, waiting to talk to them next week when we pass them in the hall.
- 4:44I Hate Talking: Yep, exactly.
- 4:46I Hate Talking: So I think that uh those are some of the things that perhaps people themselves enjoy talking about uh or love talking about, but the counterparty hates talking about those things that when uh you have a crunchy person.
- 5:02I Hate Talking: That is all about the keto diet and they are there to tell people all about the benefits of ketosis and the energy levels that it has that uh this person on the other side of the conversation is saying in their head, oh boy, here we go again, uh, we are gonna hear about all the crazy diet fads, uh, that this person believes in.
- 5:24I Hate Talking: Or we have these people that are super into cryptocurrency and Bitcoin and stellar lumens and all the other different uh cryptocurrencies that are out there today, not to forget uh Dogecoin, uh, one of our kids' favorite, uh, that the person again on this other side of the conversation is saying in their mind, oh boy, here we go again.
- 5:48I Hate Talking: Uh, we're just gonna hear about all this crazy stuff that's in the digital world that has no reflection on anything that is relevant to me.
- 5:57I Hate Talking: And uh I think that can even be part of the response when it comes to religion that uh perhaps this person.
- 6:05I Hate Talking: Uh, enjoys church and enjoys sharing things about their faith in Jesus Christ, but on the other side of the conversation, you have this person thinking in their head, oh boy, here we go again.
- 6:17I Hate Talking: I'm interacting with another Jesus freak today.
- 6:19I Hate Talking: Yeah, definitely, um.
- 6:22I Hate Talking: The easier topics like you said about diet or exercise possibly.
- 6:27I Hate Talking: When I hear, I know you love your diet, and when you mention to me how good it is, and I don't disagree.
- 6:35I Hate Talking: But I also sure love my ice cream or my tacos.
- 6:40I Hate Talking: So I think that's great for you.
- 6:42I Hate Talking: I'm gonna enjoy this taco and be happy.
- 6:45I Hate Talking: But there's bigger topics in my head, bigger, consequential, where people, the second I see them, I think, oh boy, here we go.
- 6:58I Hate Talking: We're gonna have a topic about religion or politics, and I try to make a quick left turn, so I don't have to have these conversations with those people.
- 7:07I Hate Talking: Yep, and I think that it's at a bit of perhaps again the why people hate talking about certain topics is that there's going to be some degree of disagreement or potential conflict or at least maybe some uh things that are not gonna be 100% agreed upon that are going to again cause some potential.
- 7:35I Hate Talking: Issues within that relationship or again, perhaps how the people on the other end of the conversation perceive you when you're talking about some of those things that maybe uh again are not going to be in complete alignment.
- 7:48I Hate Talking: Do you think this is a cultural thing then?
- 7:52I Hate Talking: Are there here again in Middle America, where we are.
- 7:57I Hate Talking: We're told not to talk about religion and politics at the dinner table, that would be the stereotype.
- 8:06I Hate Talking: In other cultures, would that still be this um disagreements, or would those be more culturally acceptable to discuss?
- 8:16I Hate Talking: So it's interesting because my experience has been primarily limited to Western culture, primarily in the United States, a little bit here within uh Canada, Mexico, uh, but primarily again just Western culture, uh, a little bit here and there with uh perhaps some people that I've known in Australia, uh, as well as India, um, but those uh particular relationships that I've had are Uh, highly westernized in terms of just the expectations, uh, just because of, uh, English being the primary language that's going to be, uh, those conversations taking place in, uh, and things of that nature, but I think that it does hold true that politics and religion are gonna be way up there on the list in terms of topics that you avoid.
- 9:10I Hate Talking: In the beginning, unless you're talking to a trusted person that you have a deep relationship with.
- 9:16I Hate Talking: So what happens when these topics you hate come up?
- 9:21I Hate Talking: What would you do?
- 9:22I Hate Talking: So again, it goes a little bit back to our first episode in terms of perhaps how introverts versus extroverts handle those conversations.
- 9:32I Hate Talking: Uh, as an introvert, I think the fact that I would want to be able to understand what is expected from the conversation as well as be able to have a little bit of control over the course of that conversation and where it's going and what is contained therein.
- 9:52I Hate Talking: That I'm going to.
- 9:54I Hate Talking: Turn the topic or the conversation maybe to things that I know more about or that I feel more comfortable talking about rather than certain aspects even within those two categories of topics uh that maybe I am unfamiliar with or feel like I have less familiarity with.
- 10:15I Hate Talking: That makes sense.
- 10:16I Hate Talking: And another question I'd have on that is, you hate talking about these subjects, or many people do.
- 10:22I Hate Talking: Do they also hate listening to the topics or talking and listening.
- 10:27I Hate Talking: The same.
- 10:29I Hate Talking: Talking and listening, I think are.
- 10:32I Hate Talking: Related yet very different because when one is talking, they are trying to impart information to the person that is Uh, hopefully listening or supposedly listening, or at least pretending to listen, uh, or you may have somebody that just up and leaves the conversation and they are not listening at all anymore.
- 10:57I Hate Talking: But that talking is the sending of the information and trying to impart some sort of knowledge or ideas or um potentially even maybe asking some questions in order to better understand the other person's view.
- 11:14I Hate Talking: Whereas listening is going to uh incorporate not only physically hearing what that person is saying, but also Decomposing and uh internalizing that and being able to understand and interpret what that person is saying and that really also brings into Focus another part of communication in general is the interpretation of what the person is saying not only hearing the physical words.
- 11:45I Hate Talking: I wonder um.
- 11:48I Hate Talking: I feel like everyone has natural biases.
- 11:52I Hate Talking: Whether it's how they were raised, or where they're from, or even books they read.
- 11:59I Hate Talking: And I wonder if that plays into what we hate talking about or what we even hate listening to.
- 12:05I Hate Talking: If our biases and our preconceived thoughts will come in at that point.
- 12:12I Hate Talking: Yeah, I think that's a good observation in terms of just maybe where people are going to Enjoy listening or enjoying converse on things that uh the other party is either conveying that they already agree with or that um are shared ideas and shared concepts that um perhaps they already have those preconceived notions that uh that's the way that the world works or that's the way that things should be, but when they perhaps encounter something that is Counter to their preconceived notions or their preconceived ideas on the way things work or the way things that uh the way that it should work, uh, that there is maybe some conflict there and that also generates.
- 13:01I Hate Talking: The hate of talking.
- 13:03I Hate Talking: So we've talked about religion, we've talked about politics, uh, we've even talked about health and dieting, financial worlds that even within those topics, there can be subcategories of things that people hate talking about.
- 13:21I Hate Talking: I think if we look at some of the areas that perhaps people use as general topics for those very surface level conversations, the weather.
- 13:34I Hate Talking: Uh, the maybe plans that they have for the week that, uh, those things are acceptable, uh, but can you maybe even think that there's some subtopics within those general topics that people hate talking about?
- 13:47I Hate Talking: So, I hear often from people that hate small talk.
- 13:52I Hate Talking: I actually saw a book, I can't remember the title that I almost um almost read, but um I saw it, and it talks about how to do small talk better.
- 14:04I Hate Talking: And I don't mind small talk.
- 14:09I Hate Talking: I don't mind talking about the weather or what color.
- 14:14I Hate Talking: Looks best on the individual, or how the grass was mowed.
- 14:21I Hate Talking: Those topics don't bother me, probably just cause I don't mind um just chit chatting over nothing and walking away.
- 14:28I Hate Talking: But I do know that as a Who, I hear maybe, many, many people talk about how they don't like just talking to talk first talking sake.
- 14:41I Hate Talking: Yeah, that's very true.
- 14:43I Hate Talking: I think that uh there's Some degree of uh expectation that there is that small talk and uh that uh again that may be cultural in nature that uh perhaps there's even within the United States, uh, some degree of uh certain regions within the US that uh value those uh.
- 15:04I Hate Talking: Niceties and small talk as a start out to the conversation versus maybe some other cultures even within the US that want to get straight to the point and that uh there can even be some conflict or some things that uh maybe rub people the wrong way uh when we don't engage those, in those things of small talk, uh, or again, maybe skip over those things entirely.
- 15:30I Hate Talking: Yeah, and what I was thinking as listening to you talk was how much I hate people repeating themselves.
- 15:38I Hate Talking: Like, as I'm putting myself in positions where I feel like often I'm not bothered by people's conversations, I am.
- 15:47I Hate Talking: When it's something we've already talked about in the same person or by a different person.
- 15:52I Hate Talking: It's hard to hear the same stories again and again.
- 15:55I Hate Talking: Yes, and I actually saw some flying ants the other day and I was quite concerned that they were termites, but ended up that uh they were.
- 16:04I Hate Talking: Flying ants, so in our house I'm glad about that.
- 16:08I Hate Talking: No, in the, in the outside, in the outside world.
- 16:11I Hate Talking: So I think we've touched on a number of things around the uh some of the bigger topics that people hate talking about uh with regards to religion and politics and even some of the things that people hate talking about within some of the generally culturally accepted topics um and even whether those small talk topics are hated or not because uh as we've heard that those things can even be hated.
- 16:42I Hate Talking: In and of themselves.
- 16:44I Hate Talking: I'm still waiting to hear back about this flying ants thing cause I'm missing the story behind it.
- 16:50I Hate Talking: What's that mean?
- 16:52I Hate Talking: Well, it is a little bit of a play on words, and that may set us up for a new word or phrase for an upcoming episode on homonyms.
- 17:04I Hate Talking: So you will have to stay tuned for our next episode where the word homonym may be our word or phrase of the episode.
- 17:14I Hate Talking: Oh, I can't wait.
- 17:15I Hate Talking: So as we round out this episode, we have touched on a number of things that people hate talking about the what of The 5 part series on who, what, where, when, and why, and we've even delved in a little bit into more of the why on why people hate talking and we will expand on those topics and those concepts in future episodes as well.
- 17:47I Hate Talking: So until next time, from your friends at IHal, remember, it is only through talking that we begin the journey to understanding.
