Transcript
- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Thursday.
- 0:16It is the 18th of July and welcome, welcome to the day
- 0:23where we are invited up into a very, very sacred space.
- 0:28We are invited up into that upper room where Jesus and his
- 0:33disciples gather as they share the Passover meal together.
- 0:38And this is behind closed doors. This was a space where Jesus
- 0:42really poured his heart out and shared his most intimate
- 0:46thoughts with his closest group of friends.
- 0:49And we are not only invited up there to hear a transcript of
- 0:53what happened, but we are invited up and, and have this
- 0:57shared by John, by a man who has spent his entire life reflecting
- 1:03on these words. And so they come to us filled
- 1:07with explanation and emotion and intent, bound up in and through
- 1:13and around the words that Jesus spoke.
- 1:16And he did this led by God's Spirit, so that you and I are
- 1:20invited into that intimate place with Jesus to hear not only what
- 1:26he said, but to feel His intention, to know his heart and
- 1:31to understand what it is that he was doing and what it is that He
- 1:35wanted for us, his followers, to continue building His Kingdom on
- 1:39earth. So this is a beautiful space
- 1:43that we will spend the next number of days in.
- 1:47So let's do it, shall we? Let let us head up those stairs,
- 1:50open that door, brush off a cushion on the floor, and sit
- 1:54down next to Jesus and hear what it is he has to say.
- 1:58As we read together John chapter 13 before the Passover
- 2:13celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this
- 2:17world and returned to his Father.
- 2:20He had loved His disciples during His ministry on earth,
- 2:23and now He loved them to the very end.
- 2:27It was time for supper then. The devil had already prompted
- 2:31Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.
- 2:36Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over
- 2:39everything and that he had come from God and would return to
- 2:43God. So he got up from the table,
- 2:47took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist and
- 2:51poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash his
- 2:55disciples feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.
- 3:00When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, Floyd, are
- 3:04you going to wash my feet? Jesus replied.
- 3:08You don't understand now what I'm doing, but someday you will.
- 3:13No, Peter protested. You will never wash my feet,
- 3:18Jesus replied. Unless I wash you, you won't
- 3:22belong to me. Simon Peter exclaimed.
- 3:25Then wash my hands and my head as well, Lord, not just my feet,
- 3:29Jesus replied. A person who was bathed all over
- 3:33does not need to wash except for the feet to be entirely clean.
- 3:38And your disciples are clean, but not all of you, for Jesus
- 3:44knew who would betray him. This is what he meant when he
- 3:47said not all of you are clean after washing their feet.
- 3:52He put on his robe again and sat down and asked, Do you
- 3:56understand what I was doing? You called me Teacher and Lord,
- 4:01and you were right, because that's what I am.
- 4:03And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet,
- 4:07you ought to wash each other's feet.
- 4:10I've given you an example to follow.
- 4:13Do as I have done to you. I tell you the truth.
- 4:17Slaves are no greater than their master, nor is the messenger
- 4:21more important than the one who sends the message.
- 4:24Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing
- 4:28them. I'm not saying these things to
- 4:32all of you. I know the ones I've chosen.
- 4:35But this fulfils the scripture that says the one who eats my
- 4:39food has turned against me. I tell you this beforehand so
- 4:44that when it happens, you will believe that I am the Messiah.
- 4:51So I tell you the truth, anyone who welcomes my messenger is
- 4:54welcoming me, and anyone who welcomes me is welcoming the
- 4:58Father who sent me. Now Jesus was deeply troubled,
- 5:03and he exclaimed. I tell you the truth, one of you
- 5:08will betray me. The disciples looked at each
- 5:12other, wondering whom he could mean.
- 5:15The disciple Jesus loved was sitting next to Jesus at the
- 5:18table. Simon Peter motioned to him to
- 5:21ask who's he talking about? So that disciple leaned over to
- 5:26Jesus and asked, Lord, who is it?
- 5:30Jesus responded. It is the one to whom I give the
- 5:34bread I dip in the bowl. And when he had dipped it, he
- 5:38gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.
- 5:42When Judas had eaten the bread, Satan entered into him.
- 5:47Then Jesus told him, hurry and do what you're going to do.
- 5:53None of the others at the table knew what Jesus meant.
- 5:56Since Judas was their treasurer, some thought Jesus was telling
- 6:00him to go and pay for the food or to give some money to the
- 6:03poor. So Judas left at once, going out
- 6:07into the night. As soon as Judas left the room,
- 6:11Jesus said the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into His
- 6:17glory, and God will be glorified because of Him.
- 6:21And since God receives glory because of the sun, He will give
- 6:25His own glory to the sun, and he will do so at once.
- 6:31Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer, and as
- 6:36I told the Jewish leaders, you will search for me.
- 6:40But you can't come where I am going.
- 6:43So now I'm giving you a new commandment.
- 6:46Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you
- 6:51should love each other. Your love for one another will
- 6:54prove to the world that you are my disciples.
- 6:58Simon Peter asked. Lord, where are you going?
- 7:02And Jesus replied, You can't go with me now, but you will follow
- 7:07me later. But why can't I come now, Lord?
- 7:11He asked. I'm ready to die for you, Jesus
- 7:14answered. Die for me.
- 7:17I tell you the truth, Peter, before the rooster crows
- 7:21tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know
- 7:26me. Thank you, Jesus, for the
- 7:38clarity of your teaching here. Thank you for the way that you
- 7:42serve. You don't sit around placing
- 7:46yourself on a throne, big noting yourself, but you come, towel
- 7:50wrapped around your waist to serve as a servant would do, as
- 7:54a slave would do for their master, cleaning the dirt off
- 7:58the feet before they sit down to a meal.
- 8:02And you don't do this as a mystery, but you come to serve
- 8:06us and asked that we would serve each other.
- 8:12So Jesus, I pray that your humble servant leadership, that
- 8:17the way that you loved would change our hearts, that we would
- 8:23be inspired to spend our lives lived in service of your people,
- 8:29of all of your people, those who love you and those who don't yet
- 8:33know about you. I pray that we would always be
- 8:38looking for opportunities to wash their feet, to serve them
- 8:42in a way that feels so unnecessary but so appreciated
- 8:47as they receive just a little bit of the love that you have
- 8:51given us. So shape us for your service.
- 8:55Shape our hearts. Lead us, Challenge us, and place
- 9:01us in situations where we can love as you have first loved us.
- 9:09And thank you for your love, and we can only pray these things
- 9:13because of you and your love. So it's in your name that we
- 9:17pray at all. I'm in.
