- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of Not Another Football Podcast with.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Myself, Simon Donnelly and Turkey McNamara. And we're delighted to
- 0:11Speaker 2: have a couple of guests on. It's only the second
- 0:12Speaker 2: time we've had a duo since we started. And it's
- 0:16Speaker 2: Mark Hawkins and Stephen Robb.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Footballers stroke. into the life of fashion. We'll touch on
- 0:23Speaker 1: that in a wee bit. How are yous getting on?
- 0:24Speaker 1: You guys all right?
- 0:25Speaker 3: Very good, very good, mate, very good.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Every time I'm looking at your social media, they know
- 0:28Speaker 1: yous are playing golf.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Aye, we're keeping ourselves busy, aren't we?
- 0:31Speaker 4: We've started something new, so we've started a new brand,
- 0:33Speaker 4: and we wanted to do something that we loved, around
- 0:35Speaker 4: what we loved, so how can we get an excuse
- 0:39Speaker 4: to play golf every day?
- 0:40Speaker 3: We can play golf two or three days a week,
- 0:42Speaker 3: it'd be nice.
- 0:43Speaker 1: He looks as if he knows what he's doing right enough,
- 0:44Speaker 1: which he's got handicapped.
- 0:47Speaker 5: Ten.
- 0:47Speaker 3: He needs to start putting some cards in, mind you.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Where do you play?
- 0:51Speaker 1: Are you members?
- 0:52Speaker 3: I'm a member at HAGS, HAGS Castle. I'm an Aylor
- 0:55Speaker 3: on the East Coast. What do you do? 4.5.
- 0:58Speaker 1: See when you put a point in, he hammers me.
- 1:01Speaker 3: He's 10.9, he just didn't know what to tell us. Anybody,
- 1:04Speaker 3: I'm just 4.14 for 30 years. Is that a band
- 1:05Speaker 3: as well then? No, it can be.
- 1:06Speaker 5: 4.2 is good.
- 1:18Speaker 6: I was doing it at 3.5 but then it's tough
- 1:21Speaker 6: see the better you get it's hard you can't make
- 1:23Speaker 6: any mistakes so it's just creeping back up you see
- 1:27Speaker 6: the Scottish Golf app and you see your scores your
- 1:29Speaker 6: good scores falling off at the bottom and you're replacing
- 1:31Speaker 6: them with just mediocre.
- 1:32Speaker 4: We played with Boy Dempsey didn't we the other day
- 1:34Speaker 4: he was cat candy played off two or something he
- 1:36Speaker 4: was very good he was good big.
- 1:40Speaker 7: Challenge we grew on And he's obviously trying to get
- 1:43Speaker 7: down to scratch.
- 1:43Speaker 5: Now, it was that before we went on.
- 1:45Speaker 7: I was winding him up. I says, some people looked
- 1:48Speaker 7: at your swing and said, there's no chance you'll get
- 1:51Speaker 7: a scratch.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Aye.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Afterwards, he was like... Then he hit like a 73
- 1:54Speaker 1: or a 74 the next round.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Aye, did he? I play over 35s with Charlie. He's
- 1:59Speaker 3: still a good player. Aye. He's only a few years out.
- 2:03Speaker 3: He's playing that 10 and 6 as well. Is he Celtic?
- 2:05Speaker 2: Aye.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Aye.
- 2:05Speaker 7: Aye.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So how did you guys get to use childhood mates?
- 2:12Speaker 3: Through St Mirren, actually.
- 2:14Speaker 4: I was at St Mirren and Robbo basically replaced me,
- 2:16Speaker 4: but there's a boy.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Did you play together or not?
- 2:19Speaker 6: It was just that exact crossover. I left United and
- 2:23Speaker 6: then went to St Mirren.
- 2:23Speaker 4: And I'd signed for Hamelin on a pre-contract and then
- 2:28Speaker 4: Robbo came in.
- 2:29Speaker 3: So we were kind of in the same friends group.
- 2:31Speaker 6: Andy Dorman, Stephen McGinn, Diff Barn, Mark Howard, the boys.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:36Speaker 6: So... we kind of just after training we kind of
- 2:38Speaker 6: go and meet each other just for coffee or whatever
- 2:40Speaker 6: and you were at Hamilton you just come and meet
- 2:43Speaker 6: and then I moved in with Andy Dorman and then
- 2:46Speaker 6: did Andy stay with me for a bit? Andy was
- 2:48Speaker 6: staying I think his missus moved over from America and
- 2:50Speaker 6: then I was staying with Andy got kicked out because
- 2:53Speaker 6: his missus was coming in and I moved in with
- 2:55Speaker 6: Mark and that's kind of where it all started and
- 2:57Speaker 6: the Gorbals and the new Gorbals and they just lived
- 3:00Speaker 6: together I lived together for a few years I was
- 3:03Speaker 6: still my young lad was still up in Dundee so
- 3:05Speaker 6: I was just kind of doing that kind of half
- 3:07Speaker 6: half travelling we.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Lived together a couple of times before and then he
- 3:10Speaker 4: went away to Thailand and that's where we sort of
- 3:11Speaker 4: started being inspired the first business then when he came
- 3:14Speaker 4: back he moved in again so.
- 3:16Speaker 3: I've been for a while now. Can I keep away?
- 3:19Speaker 3: Like you used to? Aye.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Aye, we never bunked.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Like Scottish Ant and Dec, weren't we? We were the same.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Like Scottish Ant and Dec.
- 3:26Speaker 1: We were runnies for a spell under 21s was the
- 3:28Speaker 1: first time, wasn't it?
- 3:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And when you came to Celtic, a few months later. 95? 95, aye.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I used to know you from Celtic.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Under 21s, 20 starts. I used to sell majors.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I'm a year younger than that.
- 3:44Speaker 6: I saw that I saw that get it in I
- 3:47Speaker 6: saw that get it in no it was it was
- 3:50Speaker 6: the 21s and I don't know how we ended up together.
- 3:52Speaker 7: In the 21s we're going to it's that way in
- 3:55Speaker 7: the 21 no we did once I signed we did
- 3:58Speaker 7: because I was running with Crawford.
- 4:01Speaker 6: Stevie Crawford ah right ok can I mind long.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Time ago so your football careers obviously went in different
- 4:09Speaker 2: paths where was your most enjoyable career We.
- 4:13Speaker 6: Had different parties going in at the senior, so I
- 4:15Speaker 6: started in the youth team at Dundee, come through the
- 4:18Speaker 6: typical S form, through the youth teams, under 21s, probably
- 4:22Speaker 6: lucky that they had the under 21 league at the time,
- 4:26Speaker 6: as it was a progression from going from the youth
- 4:28Speaker 6: team into the first team. So with the under 21 league,
- 4:31Speaker 6: there was that kind of three to five overage players
- 4:33Speaker 6: they had at the time. So you maybe go away
- 4:35Speaker 6: to Celtic or Rangers and Marco Negri's playing, De Boer's playing.
- 4:39Speaker 6: And what a difference it made coming out from the
- 4:41Speaker 6: youth team into that and it gave you that progression
- 4:44Speaker 6: that i was at dundee at the time when all
- 4:45Speaker 6: the italian boys were there the benetti's and stuff so
- 4:48Speaker 6: i made i made my debut with you guys and
- 4:51Speaker 6: it just took a little bit of time just because
- 4:53Speaker 6: there was such a i think at dundee at the
- 4:54Speaker 6: time i had a squad of eight years some of
- 4:57Speaker 6: the kids for dundee who were getting five six and
- 5:00Speaker 6: the wage bill must have been just.
- 5:01Speaker 3: That's how they survive exactly that so i went on
- 5:02Speaker 3: loan uh.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Ray Throwers when Jim Duffy was the manager in the
- 5:08Speaker 6: club administration and then I got called back straight away
- 5:10Speaker 6: and says right that was me in the first team
- 5:12Speaker 6: I think I played like 50-60 games in a row
- 5:14Speaker 6: after that.
- 5:15Speaker 4: I went through a very different route than that didn't
- 5:17Speaker 4: I I ended up I was at Tayport Juniors then
- 5:20Speaker 4: I went to uni in Edinburgh so I just signed
- 5:21Speaker 4: Phil O'Neill just played Phil O'Neill we won the Scottish
- 5:25Speaker 4: and then the next year we got to the Scottish
- 5:27Speaker 4: Cup final again What did you go to do at uni?
- 5:29Speaker 3: Marine Biology Seriously? Aye aye aye how did that go?
- 5:33Speaker 4: It did go great mate I thought I was going
- 5:35Speaker 4: to be using that I'm definitely not I thought I
- 5:38Speaker 4: was going to be swimming with dolphins and sharks in
- 5:39Speaker 4: the Great Barrier Reef but it didn't work out but
- 5:43Speaker 4: nah then I signed for when Lifco was there for
- 5:46Speaker 4: a couple of years and then it was like Ronnie
- 5:48Speaker 4: MacDonald and Alan Maitland they'd all come for junior football
- 5:51Speaker 4: and they took over Hamilton and then they took like
- 5:53Speaker 4: sort of all the best junior players up to Hamilton
- 5:55Speaker 4: so that was when I was like 22 so I
- 5:58Speaker 4: was part time with Hamilton for two years then I
- 6:00Speaker 4: went full time with St Mariam when I was like
- 6:01Speaker 4: 24 we we got promoted from the second division to
- 6:04Speaker 4: the first division with Hamilton and then obviously played against
- 6:06Speaker 4: St Mirren and did quite well and then Gus signed
- 6:09Speaker 4: me so that was my first year full time was
- 6:11Speaker 4: 24 so it's a different route certainly I think there's
- 6:15Speaker 4: a few boys that have done it now do you
- 6:16Speaker 4: know what I mean I think Dougie Emery maybe did
- 6:17Speaker 4: it sort of similar and then the boy Darian McKinnon
- 6:19Speaker 4: as well he sort of came through amateur and what
- 6:21Speaker 4: we saw it gives.
- 6:22Speaker 7: You a wee bit more at the end of the
- 6:25Speaker 7: career because most boys because it's you know the full
- 6:27Speaker 7: time I think you look over the ones that played
- 6:30Speaker 7: into like 40 hmm see like Craig Brewster and all that,
- 6:33Speaker 7: Davey Weir, because they start, they have jobs, they start with,
- 6:39Speaker 7: they're part-time footballers, and then.
- 6:41Speaker 6: There's a real hunger for it, I think, it's either like,
- 6:43Speaker 6: less wear and tear on the body, you're still like
- 6:45Speaker 6: that now, like you're going to play, over 35s, and
- 6:48Speaker 6: then five sides, and whatever, whereas like, we were training daily, 15, 16,
- 6:53Speaker 6: and I lost the hunger for it, like late 20s,
- 6:56Speaker 6: early 30s, and, I retired through an injury.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I don't even.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Know if it's because like, I'm guessing all football, but like,
- 7:05Speaker 4: when you're a professional footballer, you do enjoy it less. Like,
- 7:07Speaker 4: I don't mean that in a bad way. It's just like,
- 7:09Speaker 4: you played football for the love of playing football when
- 7:11Speaker 4: you're playing for like London Football and then when it
- 7:13Speaker 4: becomes a job it becomes a job it's like a
- 7:15Speaker 4: bit different so then.
- 7:16Speaker 6: I think that's hard for me I understand that as
- 7:19Speaker 6: well but you do it becomes like say it becomes
- 7:23Speaker 6: a job.
- 7:24Speaker 4: I do remember going like when I first went full
- 7:25Speaker 4: time I was training with St Mirren we were like
- 7:28Speaker 4: just in Paisley somewhere And I was like running about
- 7:30Speaker 4: like laughing and somebody's like, what are you laughing for?
- 7:32Speaker 3: I was like, I can't believe I'm getting paid to train.
- 7:33Speaker 4: I was like in an office last week, like working
- 7:35Speaker 4: at a computer and now I'm just like running about
- 7:37Speaker 4: a pitch.
- 7:37Speaker 3: It's like a bit serious.
- 7:38Speaker 7: It does go in the management, although when we first
- 7:41Speaker 7: took over, the two of us, I remember we played a,
- 7:44Speaker 7: I assume we were going to play in the reserve
- 7:45Speaker 7: game for Patrick Thistle, doing it in. To show, because
- 7:49Speaker 7: other boys were moaning, it was like a Monday night
- 7:51Speaker 7: doing it in in the reserve game. It was like
- 7:53Speaker 7: it was a punishment. I said, it should be, it's
- 7:55Speaker 7: not a punishment. I said, we're buzzing that we can
- 7:58Speaker 7: play in a game. but as time goes on in my.
- 8:02Speaker 8: Experience I try to do I played down at Dumbarton
- 8:08Speaker 8: I think I was the only I was the senior
- 8:10Speaker 8: guy I think I was number two at the time
- 8:12Speaker 8: and it was all young boys and I'm thinking right
- 8:14Speaker 8: going can I lead by example and track but there
- 8:17Speaker 8: was nothing happening in the game and it was two
- 8:18Speaker 8: old guys there just hammering me I'd done like years getting.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Finished I'm trying to help these boys here these guys
- 8:25Speaker 2: I was like maybe it's time to.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Hang about you get like a high you're trying to
- 8:29Speaker 4: do something you're trying to do something for them so
- 8:32Speaker 4: you're saying you kind of kind of at 32 then.
- 8:35Speaker 6: Yeah I played when I left St Mirren 28 I
- 8:39Speaker 6: went and played in Thailand for three years right which
- 8:42Speaker 6: was which was brilliant I was just like a total
- 8:44Speaker 6: like different lifestyle The boys were technically brilliant, but because.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Of the heat, there was not that physicality.
- 8:51Speaker 6: It probably suited me getting to the late 20s, slowing
- 8:54Speaker 6: in at left back and just playing tidy football. That
- 8:57Speaker 6: was kind of my game. It suited me down to
- 8:59Speaker 6: the ground. When I came back, we'd already set up
- 9:02Speaker 6: Be Inspired and moved back in with Coco and I
- 9:07Speaker 6: was signed for Brechin. I was going to go into
- 9:09Speaker 6: the juniors and play. There was some mad money floating
- 9:12Speaker 6: about then. Brechin had made me an offer. I was like, nah,
- 9:17Speaker 6: may as well stay at the best level I can.
- 9:19Speaker 6: Rangers were in the league at that point, in League One.
- 9:21Speaker 6: So I'd done a year there and then six months
- 9:23Speaker 6: at Montrose. But by that time, going from playing that
- 9:26Speaker 6: kind of passing game in Thailand to then playing... part-time
- 9:31Speaker 6: football was just like, and the first time I'd ever
- 9:33Speaker 6: played part-time.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Football, it was a total culture, but it was difficult,
- 9:36Speaker 3: really difficult.
- 9:37Speaker 4: I went part-time in my career as well, but my
- 9:39Speaker 4: hip was, I'd had a bad hip injury when I
- 9:42Speaker 4: was at Hamilton before I came to part of this,
- 9:44Speaker 4: so that was my first year back after it, so
- 9:47Speaker 4: I tore the cartilage in my hip, they did an
- 9:48Speaker 4: operation to sort of prolong it, but by the end
- 9:50Speaker 4: of my career, I was taking like 12 painkillers a
- 9:53Speaker 4: day just to get through training.
- 9:54Speaker 6: There must be so many boys when they get into
- 9:56Speaker 6: their 30s that are just taking pills.
- 9:58Speaker 4: That's the only big step, reason I could it was
- 10:01Speaker 4: like 3 diclofenac and like 8 cocodron a day just
- 10:03Speaker 4: to get through I'm kind of playing the 10 and
- 10:05Speaker 4: 6's this weekend my knees got I'm needing an ACL.
- 10:08Speaker 6: Up later on after playing 5 asides and all that
- 10:11Speaker 6: in amateur football when I finished playing that they actually
- 10:13Speaker 6: realised you didn't even have an ACL, so you were
- 10:15Speaker 6: playing your career without an ACL. So I tore my
- 10:19Speaker 6: cartilage and I got a scan and they were like, listen,
- 10:21Speaker 6: you've not even got an ACL, you're going to need
- 10:22Speaker 6: to reconstruct that.
- 10:23Speaker 3: I was like, nah, you're alright. I was 37, 38
- 10:25Speaker 3: at the time.
- 10:25Speaker 6: I can still play golf, I'm alright.
- 10:28Speaker 3: I've always played with the club, that's fine.
- 10:31Speaker 2: You see, when you come to the end of your
- 10:33Speaker 2: football career then, because I was trying to think back
- 10:37Speaker 2: towards the end of my career, it was like you
- 10:39Speaker 2: were signing, it wasn't long-term contracts anymore, it was just
- 10:42Speaker 2: year to year. And you were just kind of thinking, right,
- 10:44Speaker 2: get to the next year. I didn't really have an
- 10:47Speaker 2: outlook of what I was going to do next. But
- 10:49Speaker 2: did you guys, when you went in to be inspired,
- 10:53Speaker 2: was this a plan for a while or did you
- 10:55Speaker 2: just come about it?
- 10:56Speaker 3: Not really.
- 10:57Speaker 4: I think obviously Stephen touched on it. Like, see, when
- 10:59Speaker 4: we were at St Mirren, or he was at St
- 11:00Speaker 4: Mirren and I was at Hamill, we used to meet
- 11:01Speaker 4: up after training. We were all like, what are we
- 11:03Speaker 4: going to do after our careers? So we'd be talking
- 11:05Speaker 4: about it and stuff. But, The Be Inspired thing never
- 11:07Speaker 4: really came about. It only really came about when Robo
- 11:10Speaker 4: went to Thailand. So he was over there and I
- 11:12Speaker 4: was like, surely there's something over there that's maybe a
- 11:14Speaker 4: bit different that we could sell back here. And then
- 11:17Speaker 4: for a couple of years, obviously, he was just patching
- 11:19Speaker 4: me because he was enjoying himself in Thailand.
- 11:21Speaker 3: You know what it's like with footwear, isn't it? Stay
- 11:22Speaker 3: in touch with many boys.
- 11:23Speaker 6: I know you're in a tight-knit dressing room for a year,
- 11:26Speaker 6: but then you move on and you lose touch with boys.
- 11:29Speaker 6: So when I was over there, we kept in touch
- 11:32Speaker 6: all the time.
- 11:33Speaker 3: He's like, you get me a move, you get me
- 11:34Speaker 3: a move, I'm driving. Go over there, I can sell here.
- 11:38Speaker 6: So then on my days off, I used to go
- 11:39Speaker 6: up to the market stalls and just say, I was
- 11:42Speaker 6: on my own, I was just like, looking about, and
- 11:44Speaker 6: then I was like, listen, I've got t-shirts here, how
- 11:46Speaker 6: about I just buy some on the market and send
- 11:48Speaker 6: them back to you? I think you were at Ross
- 11:49Speaker 6: County at the time, and I was sending them to you.
- 11:51Speaker 4: You were sending me, and I sent them to the
- 11:53Speaker 4: changing room, and put them on eBay, and we were
- 11:55Speaker 4: doing really well for them. And then obviously the guy,
- 11:57Speaker 4: the guy, and then the guy was.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Have you.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Already spoken about clothing before this, though?
- 12:01Speaker 3: I was just looking at you. Clothes, probably more than me.
- 12:05Speaker 3: You were into more brands.
- 12:06Speaker 6: I was more into brands, and I liked, I always
- 12:09Speaker 6: liked fashion, always was into that, so... When we were
- 12:12Speaker 6: sending stuff back to you, it was like selling so fast.
- 12:15Speaker 6: The guy that was buying the stuff off was an
- 12:16Speaker 6: Italian guy who had his own wee market stall set up.
- 12:19Speaker 3: He says, why did you not start your own brand?
- 12:20Speaker 3: Was he not supplying like DC10? Yeah, he was.
- 12:22Speaker 6: Supplying the merch stuff for all the clubs in Ibiza.
- 12:26Speaker 6: So he was like, listen, I can do this and that.
- 12:28Speaker 6: I'll do the labels, the packaging.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Do you want it? I'll help out.
- 12:32Speaker 6: He says, we can start really small. We'll start with
- 12:34Speaker 6: like 100 pieces. And we're just trying. Within two weeks,
- 12:37Speaker 6: we'd sold it.
- 12:38Speaker 4: I think we called it Be Inspired because we had
- 12:40Speaker 4: no design background or anything so we were trying to
- 12:43Speaker 4: inspire people to sort of design for us so we
- 12:44Speaker 4: came up with an idea of like if you design
- 12:47Speaker 4: we'll run a competition every month and the winner will
- 12:49Speaker 4: make 100 pieces they get 25 to sell to their
- 12:51Speaker 4: friends and family and we'll keep 75 and sell on
- 12:53Speaker 4: the website but we made like these four designs and
- 12:56Speaker 4: they were awful we designed them on our phones it
- 12:58Speaker 4: was all pixelated I've still got a couple in my
- 13:00Speaker 4: house but my boy was like I can't print them
- 13:04Speaker 4: so he helped us as well so we released four
- 13:06Speaker 4: to start with and like we probably used boys like
- 13:09Speaker 4: Scott Brown Charlie Mulgrew Stephen Nesmith James McCarthy it was
- 13:13Speaker 4: a Hamilton he sent them stuff and they put it
- 13:15Speaker 4: on their Facebook at the time and like in a
- 13:17Speaker 4: week we'd sold.
- 13:17Speaker 6: Out of a hundred it was like influencer marketing before
- 13:20Speaker 6: it was a thing and we'd kind of like moved
- 13:23Speaker 6: away for like help getting other people to help design
- 13:25Speaker 6: we were just banging out average designs on our phone.
- 13:28Speaker 3: It was the very early days of like Instagram and
- 13:31Speaker 3: Twitter and Facebook and stuff like that.
- 13:32Speaker 2: It probably helped you from your background in football with
- 13:34Speaker 2: the network though because that was.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Your platform to get through. Definitely.
- 13:37Speaker 4: I remember even like people like we had a hoodie
- 13:39Speaker 4: come in we gave it to Anthony Stokes and he
- 13:41Speaker 4: put it on and we sold like 20 that night.
- 13:42Speaker 4: I mean just the wee things like that definitely helped
- 13:45Speaker 4: us in the beginning. Yeah.
- 13:46Speaker 1: And where do you develop it from there when you
- 13:49Speaker 1: come back home?
- 13:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:50Speaker 6: Came back, signed for briefing. The two of us were
- 13:52Speaker 6: kind of managing like three or so. We'd be inspired
- 13:55Speaker 6: like a Sunday night, Wednesday night, Friday night.
- 13:59Speaker 3: And then we would work. We were working on recruitment.
- 14:02Speaker 6: We'd walk in the town from the Got New Gorbals
- 14:05Speaker 6: every day, working Monday to Friday. And then we were
- 14:08Speaker 6: playing our part in football Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. So our
- 14:10Speaker 6: full week was just consumed just like trying to earn
- 14:12Speaker 6: as much money as I could. We never earned enough
- 14:15Speaker 6: money in our careers that you can go, right, I'm
- 14:16Speaker 6: just going to retire.
- 14:17Speaker 3: I don't think there's a lot of people in Scotland. No,
- 14:19Speaker 3: there's just not.
- 14:20Speaker 4: I remember just speaking about being inspired all the way
- 14:23Speaker 4: to work in the morning and then at lunchtime, I'd
- 14:26Speaker 4: be at the post office just spending my whole lunch
- 14:28Speaker 4: sending out stuff and then we'd be speaking about walking
- 14:30Speaker 4: back and it was good.
- 14:31Speaker 3: It was good. I'm a little bit used to it.
- 14:33Speaker 6: Football network obviously grow the brand but there's still so
- 14:36Speaker 6: much hard work that goes on behind it people didn't
- 14:38Speaker 6: see it maybe you think you're lucky you maybe play
- 14:40Speaker 6: football you can tap into who you know and stuff
- 14:42Speaker 6: like that but without the like you say posting stuff
- 14:45Speaker 6: like that and working every night of the week just
- 14:48Speaker 6: to earn a living it's like people didn't see that
- 14:53Speaker 6: but the first three I'd probably say the first eight
- 14:57Speaker 6: years was just chaos it was just organised chaos just
- 15:00Speaker 6: going from would have the stock room my bedroom was
- 15:03Speaker 6: basically at Mark's flat was my was the stock room
- 15:06Speaker 6: so basically I was double bedding and his wee dog
- 15:09Speaker 6: Bailey would just run in amongst all the stock and
- 15:11Speaker 6: I had it just like t-shirts and hoodies along the
- 15:13Speaker 6: side of the bed we still got photos and stuff.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Like that so the first few years was wild I
- 15:18Speaker 4: think it went from like 130 grand to like 500
- 15:21Speaker 4: grand to like was it like a million and then
- 15:23Speaker 4: like three million seven eleven do you know what I
- 15:25Speaker 4: mean it was just like I mean didn't he really
- 15:27Speaker 4: know what what What was going on?
- 15:29Speaker 3: We were just trying to steer the ship.
- 15:31Speaker 6: At one point in 2018, the turnover in the business
- 15:34Speaker 6: was £ 14.
- 15:34Speaker 3: 5 million. And then there was also.
- 15:36Speaker 6: £ 3 million in ASOS and foot asylum orders.
- 15:40Speaker 3: So don't get me wrong.
- 15:42Speaker 4: For two boys that had come out of football, obviously
- 15:45Speaker 4: we knew what we were doing, but business-wise, probably.
- 15:48Speaker 3: There was so much turnover and buying stock.
- 15:51Speaker 6: If somebody had come alongside us with a financial brain
- 15:54Speaker 6: who knew the figures straight off the bat, it would
- 15:57Speaker 6: have been a massive help for probably the next.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Five to 10 years.
- 16:01Speaker 6: Unfortunately, like we did have a, we brought in a
- 16:04Speaker 6: finance director and he kind of got it to a place,
- 16:07Speaker 6: but there was so many like variables in that, like
- 16:09Speaker 6: Brexit and COVID that you have to navigate through. And
- 16:13Speaker 6: then we pulled down the accounts, which looking back, we
- 16:16Speaker 6: maybe shouldn't have.
- 16:17Speaker 3: There's just so many variables. But then obviously Brexit and
- 16:19Speaker 3: COVID happened. So you don't, you don't, it's hard. There's
- 16:22Speaker 3: lots of it.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Like see for the first sort of, Four or five years,
- 16:24Speaker 4: it was just kind of smooth sailing. Then obviously all
- 16:26Speaker 4: these things happened.
- 16:27Speaker 6: We could have printed the brand on a cup and
- 16:29Speaker 6: we'd have sold like $ 500.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was just like, that's how crazy
- 16:33Speaker 3: it was.
- 16:34Speaker 7: It wasn't successful. So you opened a shop as well.
- 16:38Speaker 7: Was that after COVID?
- 16:39Speaker 3: That was further. Our first pop-up shop was just before COVID.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Was that the one that was in? The one in
- 16:44Speaker 3: Princess Square. Princess Square, yeah. It was just before COVID.
- 16:46Speaker 3: We took a little bit of staff to shop, didn't we?
- 16:48Speaker 3: And we took it for a three, four month period.
- 16:50Speaker 3: And it had done really well, but then COVID hit.
- 16:53Speaker 6: So then that kind of just, right, we just have
- 16:55Speaker 6: to pull everything in and tighten up the budget and
- 16:57Speaker 6: stuff like that. So we kind of go back into shops.
- 17:01Speaker 3: It was such a weird time, wasn't it?
- 17:02Speaker 4: We had, like, Skella and staff and, like, we had
- 17:04Speaker 4: a big warehouse, which was probably too big, but it
- 17:06Speaker 4: kind of helped because people could sort of, like, almost
- 17:09Speaker 4: isolate work as well. So, like, the warehouse is that big,
- 17:11Speaker 4: they don't have to go near each other, still pick
- 17:13Speaker 4: and pack.
- 17:14Speaker 3: But, yeah, it was just... Yeah, what comes with that?
- 17:16Speaker 7: Did you tell yourself today what to do, like you
- 17:19Speaker 7: know now?
- 17:20Speaker 3: I think just maybe getting somebody.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Financially, obviously we know a lot more about that now,
- 17:25Speaker 4: but at that time, it was just we didn't really
- 17:27Speaker 4: have any structure in the business.
- 17:28Speaker 3: We were just buying stuff and selling it.
- 17:29Speaker 6: We never had any business knowledge of what we were doing.
- 17:31Speaker 6: We were just buying stuff and selling it.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Yeah, that's exactly what I was finding. You feed off
- 17:35Speaker 3: the buzz, it's like scoring a goal.
- 17:37Speaker 6: When you get a sale, it's like scoring a goal,
- 17:38Speaker 6: but there's so many things to get that sale and
- 17:41Speaker 6: that score, that goal. There's so much build-up play that
- 17:43Speaker 6: you don't see along the way. It's like spending money
- 17:47Speaker 6: on marketing.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Like margins, marketing, overheads.
- 17:51Speaker 1: I was at one of your events. That's right. You offered,
- 17:57Speaker 1: was it 10k to the winners?
- 17:58Speaker 3: Yeah, and we did 10k to charity as well.
- 18:02Speaker 6: It was a 10k budget and then there was like
- 18:05Speaker 6: a thousand pound each for the winners, each player. And
- 18:09Speaker 6: then there was three grand.
- 18:10Speaker 1: We thought we were shoo-ins.
- 18:11Speaker 3: You just got to the final, didn't you?
- 18:13Speaker 1: No, we never.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Hi guys, as you probably well know by now, we
- 18:17Speaker 2: have signed up for the London Marathon next April and
- 18:22Speaker 2: we have some fantastic people supporting us, groups supporting us,
- 18:26Speaker 2: we're doing it for a fantastic cause, or.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Two causes, who are we doing it for?
- 18:29Speaker 7: We're doing it for Headway UK and the Concilium Sports Foundation.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Yep, so we're going to have some updated videos of
- 18:37Speaker 2: our progress and our training and everything else that it
- 18:40Speaker 2: takes to get us over the line He's emphasised that
- 18:43Speaker 2: time doesn't matter.
- 18:45Speaker 5: Doesn't matter.
- 18:46Speaker 1: As long as we complete it.
- 18:48Speaker 2: There'll be a link in the bio for any charity donations.
- 18:53Speaker 2: We're going to be raising as much money as we
- 18:55Speaker 2: can over the next period of time. Our training starts
- 18:58Speaker 2: very soon. And yeah, look forward to some updates on here.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Hopefully no injuries. Did you not ever?
- 19:05Speaker 1: No. You got beat by the winners? We got beat
- 19:07Speaker 1: off the Scotland.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Aye.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Aye, the Scotland. The football team, aye. They used to
- 19:11Speaker 3: go to Dubai and play and stuff.
- 19:12Speaker 2: So we played in the group. There was four in
- 19:14Speaker 2: the group, if I remember rightly. And we beat them
- 19:16Speaker 2: in the group. And then we played a younger team
- 19:19Speaker 2: in the next round.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Wow, that's brilliant.
- 19:22Speaker 1: I think the Clans were fighting the referee at one point.
- 19:24Speaker 3: That's actually brilliant.
- 19:26Speaker 1: So we beat a young team in the next round.
- 19:29Speaker 2: And then we were drawn against the football team in
- 19:31Speaker 2: the quarters or the semis. We had normally you wouldn't
- 19:34Speaker 2: meet them again until the final and the day was
- 19:38Speaker 2: taking its toll with us obviously the age and stuff
- 19:40Speaker 2: but I remember the rules as well you could pass
- 19:42Speaker 2: the ball back so I think they got their noses
- 19:43Speaker 2: in front and just kept rolling it back so they
- 19:46Speaker 2: went on to win it didn't they yeah they did
- 19:47Speaker 2: win it but it was a really that was they
- 19:50Speaker 2: were good.
- 19:50Speaker 6: As well that video was actually on YouTube from the
- 19:52Speaker 6: full day and besides.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Adrian Slaney they had just started did they have open
- 19:59Speaker 3: goal at that point.
- 20:00Speaker 6: They had just started and then that was on the
- 20:03Speaker 6: video yeah because we had like an after party all
- 20:05Speaker 6: the guys we came with that was.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Brilliant you just had a decent side didn't you we
- 20:08Speaker 2: had a good side and honestly I think I was
- 20:10Speaker 2: speaking to you I says what if we win it
- 20:12Speaker 2: because we're obviously ex-pros.
- 20:13Speaker 1: He says if you win it you get the money
- 20:15Speaker 1: obviously me Charlie Miller Andy.
- 20:16Speaker 5: McLaren eh.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Marvin Andrews he's a hard boy to get around at a.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Five-a-side pitch Robbie Winters.
- 20:29Speaker 1: There's a couple of other ones who's your goalie? I
- 20:32Speaker 1: don't know I can't remember the goalie somebody pulled him
- 20:34Speaker 1: in for somewhere did.
- 20:35Speaker 4: He let you down?
- 20:36Speaker 1: No I couldn't even blame him They were good, that team.
- 20:39Speaker 6: They were.
- 20:39Speaker 3: They were good.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Did they not go to.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Dubai and play and win the tournament there?
- 20:43Speaker 4: I think they'd won a tournament in Dubai back. They
- 20:46Speaker 4: all played together all the time, so they kind of,
- 20:48Speaker 4: they knew their roles and what they were doing and
- 20:49Speaker 4: how they played and stuff.
- 20:50Speaker 1: We peaked beating them in the group.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Ah, these were flying at that fight. That was a
- 20:54Speaker 3: great day. That was good, to be fair.
- 20:55Speaker 6: I think that was one thing that we learned that, as, say,
- 20:58Speaker 6: from COVID onwards, we stopped doing these sort of events.
- 21:02Speaker 6: These are like, they're like brand exercises, so everybody starts
- 21:05Speaker 6: to want to be involved in that.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Whereas we probably flipped and just set the product.
- 21:10Speaker 4: See, because the growth was so much early on, there
- 21:13Speaker 4: was probably excess money to do things like that.
- 21:14Speaker 3: But then see when it sort of leveled off.
- 21:16Speaker 4: And we were sort of doing like 10 mil a year,
- 21:17Speaker 4: like regularly, then we were like pulling money out of
- 21:22Speaker 4: things to put it, like our overheads were probably too
- 21:23Speaker 4: high at that point. And it's something that you learn
- 21:25Speaker 4: in business as we went on. But like, because the overhead,
- 21:28Speaker 4: we were pulling out of bits that were actually making
- 21:29Speaker 4: the brand better. So we weren't doing these like sponsorships
- 21:32Speaker 4: or we weren't doing events or we weren't sponsoring, like
- 21:34Speaker 4: we'd sponsored Ocean Beach.
- 21:35Speaker 3: And, Things like that.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Did you just go anywhere with likes at events?
- 21:39Speaker 1: Did you just go abroad?
- 21:40Speaker 3: Yeah, we were done. We would do photo shoots.
- 21:42Speaker 6: We'd do photo shoots in Tokyo and New York and
- 21:44Speaker 6: Chicago and they just made the brand look amazing.
- 21:47Speaker 4: So even things like that, we pulled out of them
- 21:48Speaker 4: a wee bit because we spent like 20 grand going
- 21:52Speaker 4: to Japan or something to do a photo shoot. Do
- 21:53Speaker 4: you know what I mean? But it actually made the
- 21:55Speaker 4: brand look amazing. I think that's kind of the normal budget.
- 21:58Speaker 6: But what we were doing is we were buying so
- 22:00Speaker 6: much stock and putting it in a warehouse at Kenan
- 22:03Speaker 6: Park that was about 35 grand a month rent. 65,000
- 22:07Speaker 6: square feet it was like and you just it just
- 22:10Speaker 6: wasn't sustainable because as soon as the market dropped then
- 22:13Speaker 6: you're like I've got this big warehouse.
- 22:14Speaker 3: What am I going to do it was more like
- 22:16Speaker 3: we kind of again I.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Was learning but like we were kind of building our
- 22:20Speaker 4: business around October November December so like if you had
- 22:24Speaker 4: that turnover all the time we had a good business
- 22:26Speaker 4: but then we weren't thinking about January, February, March and
- 22:28Speaker 4: then you kind of have to build it around.
- 22:30Speaker 3: That time and then you peak and it's on top almost.
- 22:34Speaker 6: And we probably wouldn't be doing that in the early
- 22:35Speaker 6: years of Beats without actually realising we were doing it
- 22:38Speaker 6: so we had a small warehouse in Camus Lang and
- 22:42Speaker 6: the guys Callum MacDonald do you know Callum? Callum played
- 22:44Speaker 6: for Dundee with me we brought.
- 22:47Speaker 4: A lot of part time footballers in didn't we Sean
- 22:52Speaker 4: Dixon Brian Wharton Brian was in Morgan Neil came over to.
- 22:58Speaker 6: Work so it was a good we tried to create
- 23:02Speaker 6: that dressing room culture and be inspired in the first
- 23:06Speaker 6: eight years it was probably like that so Callum would
- 23:08Speaker 6: come in in the morning and with a forklift, and
- 23:10Speaker 6: there was actually no space in the warehouse, and we'd
- 23:12Speaker 6: just be removing stock, putting it outside, covering it with
- 23:15Speaker 6: tarpaulin in the middle of winter, just so they could
- 23:17Speaker 6: have a bit of space to work. And we would
- 23:19Speaker 6: then come out of that Christmas with loads of excess cash,
- 23:22Speaker 6: because the overheads were low, and we were packing orders still,
- 23:26Speaker 6: and it definitely made the business feel like it was
- 23:29Speaker 6: going somewhere at that point, and that's something we've probably
- 23:31Speaker 6: learned going forward.
- 23:33Speaker 7: I suppose a good thing now is you've learned from
- 23:35Speaker 7: the new one, isn't that right? you're just a bit
- 23:38Speaker 7: more excited about what you can do.
- 23:40Speaker 3: About it definitely definitely should be good everybody wants good
- 23:44Speaker 3: golf gear as.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Well well golf's so massive now isn't it I mean
- 23:48Speaker 4: I think obviously as you get to a certain age
- 23:49Speaker 4: as well I think it's I talk about playing football,
- 23:53Speaker 4: but I play football on a Saturday or Friday night.
- 23:55Speaker 4: I'm in bits until Tuesday. Do you know what I mean?
- 23:57Speaker 4: Whereas you play golf, it's not as bad. It's easier
- 24:00Speaker 4: on your body. So I think it kind of replaces
- 24:02Speaker 4: that competitive edge for a lot of people that maybe
- 24:04Speaker 4: do play sport and.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Get a bit older.
- 24:06Speaker 1: The new brand, is it purely golf?
- 24:08Speaker 3: It's kind of golf lifestyle, I'd say.
- 24:10Speaker 4: So I'd They want it to be like something you
- 24:12Speaker 4: can wear on the course, but also like if you
- 24:14Speaker 4: turned up to like for a coffee or going out
- 24:16Speaker 4: and about, you'd look smart and it's not going to
- 24:18Speaker 4: have loads of.
- 24:19Speaker 3: It's like on the course, off the course.
- 24:20Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:20Speaker 3: It's like a proper golf lifestyle brand.
- 24:22Speaker 6: There's a few brands that we like to wear across
- 24:25Speaker 6: like golf that you can wear and maybe go and
- 24:28Speaker 6: shop in or go for a coffee.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Yeah, so go and travel.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Paddle as well.
- 24:31Speaker 7: Are we getting to paddle?
- 24:32Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. I've been playing a wee bit back. I'm
- 24:35Speaker 3: more into golf to be fair.
- 24:37Speaker 6: So if we're going to kind of go down that
- 24:39Speaker 6: route and... a lot of the content will be focused
- 24:41Speaker 6: around that.
- 24:42Speaker 7: So when's that sort of kicking off then?
- 24:45Speaker 4: We've obviously started the content and things like that. We've
- 24:47Speaker 4: got samples in place. We've placed our first order.
- 24:50Speaker 3: So we're just going to start small and just build
- 24:52Speaker 3: it up from there.
- 24:52Speaker 1: You've got Craig Watson modelling again.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. How did you know Craig?
- 24:56Speaker 5: Did you play with Craig?
- 24:57Speaker 1: I coached him with my kids. I knew him years ago.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Oh, for their prime soccer?
- 25:02Speaker 1: Before that as well. My first boys team coming through, Giffnock.
- 25:06Speaker 1: He was involved with that.
- 25:07Speaker 3: He's a great lad. He is a good lad. Yeah.
- 25:10Speaker 4: I think, I don't know if we just sort of
- 25:11Speaker 4: seen him on socials and then reached out to him
- 25:13Speaker 4: and when we were at Be Inspired we liked to
- 25:15Speaker 4: use like football, like we kind of liked to keep
- 25:17Speaker 4: it involved in football so all the names were like
- 25:19Speaker 4: football players and then we were using the boy Tom
- 25:21Speaker 4: Lang so he played for Rafe Lovers and he was
- 25:24Speaker 4: at Rangers when he was younger so we used him
- 25:26Speaker 4: as a model and then we brought Craig in as
- 25:28Speaker 4: a model and we just like to sort of keep that,
- 25:30Speaker 4: keep it sort of in Scotland as well and then
- 25:32Speaker 4: he's become quite good pals now so I play golf
- 25:34Speaker 4: with him as well actually, good lad and we're going
- 25:37Speaker 4: to try and use him for Cairn as well.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Where did you come up with the name?
- 25:43Speaker 4: Well, we were just looking, first and foremost, I wanted
- 25:45Speaker 4: something that sort of had a nod to Scotland because
- 25:47Speaker 4: it's kind of where we're from without being like Scottish.
- 25:50Speaker 3: Do you know what I mean? So it appeals to everyone.
- 25:52Speaker 4: And then because of sort of what happened with the
- 25:55Speaker 4: way sort of Be Inspired ended, it felt as though
- 25:56Speaker 4: we were just in a bit.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Of a pile of rubble.
- 25:59Speaker 4: And then Cairn means like a pile of stones that
- 26:01Speaker 4: sort of like leads the way. So I thought it
- 26:03Speaker 4: was quite apt. And then we put the two I's
- 26:06Speaker 4: in it just to sort of signify being rubble. sort
- 26:08Speaker 4: of standing together.
- 26:09Speaker 7: So when did you finish with the Be Inspired stuff then.
- 26:13Speaker 4: Well it's like last November Be Inspired went into administration
- 26:17Speaker 4: and then the new owners bought out of administration and
- 26:21Speaker 4: me and Stephen worked as consultants until.
- 26:24Speaker 3: About two months ago yeah June July time so we
- 26:29Speaker 3: worked and helped him get it sort of built up
- 26:32Speaker 3: a wee bit.
- 26:34Speaker 6: I would say yeah I would say it was tough
- 26:36Speaker 6: on a daily basis it was probably tough like because
- 26:40Speaker 6: it's yours yeah so it's like something we'd built up
- 26:43Speaker 6: for years I actually quite enjoyed after being like less
- 26:46Speaker 6: stressed aye I was so chaotic for so many years
- 26:49Speaker 6: came straight out of football with no break I think
- 26:52Speaker 6: it was it was the last Christmas was the first
- 26:54Speaker 6: time I'd ever had a Christmas New Year off ever
- 26:57Speaker 6: because even retail you've got to like Boxing Day just
- 27:00Speaker 6: before Christmas and Boxing Day is just the busiest time i.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Think going through administration was horrible as well when i
- 27:05Speaker 4: was like horrible because you that's fear on the own
- 27:10Speaker 4: as well you don't really know what's going on obviously
- 27:11Speaker 4: we got dragged into a few things or like personal
- 27:14Speaker 4: stuff as well so it's like that was a horrible
- 27:16Speaker 4: period um and then to be fair the guy we
- 27:19Speaker 4: worked and he probably helped us get on an even
- 27:22Speaker 4: keel uh sort of sort of settle ourselves down a
- 27:25Speaker 4: little bit but I think the.
- 27:27Speaker 6: Long term plan was never going to be us involved
- 27:30Speaker 6: and I think he knew that as well.
- 27:32Speaker 7: Was your ambition to grow it and then sell it?
- 27:36Speaker 3: Probably not and that's probably where we went wrong. That
- 27:39Speaker 3: was our biggest downfall.
- 27:40Speaker 4: We had people looking to invest and we had people
- 27:42Speaker 4: looking to maybe take parts of it over the time but.
- 27:46Speaker 3: We were like, oh, we want to keep this going
- 27:47Speaker 3: for like 20 years and be a legacy.
- 27:49Speaker 2: I think the fact that, obviously, it sounds indefinitely, you
- 27:53Speaker 2: exploded onto the scene with Be Inspired. Do you think
- 27:56Speaker 2: that's worked against you because it's harder to manage the
- 28:00Speaker 2: fact that you get so big so quickly?
- 28:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so. I think it probably.
- 28:05Speaker 4: grew arms and legs before we even knew what would
- 28:07Speaker 4: happen do you know what I mean and whereas if
- 28:09Speaker 4: it had maybe been a bit more steady growth we
- 28:11Speaker 4: would have learned more along the way because.
- 28:12Speaker 6: We were working in the business on a daily basis
- 28:14Speaker 6: you didn't you actually didn't see the whole overall picture
- 28:17Speaker 6: so for.
- 28:17Speaker 4: Like the first like four or five years we were
- 28:19Speaker 4: probably working from like seven in the morning to like
- 28:20Speaker 4: eleven at night do you know what I mean just
- 28:22Speaker 4: every day just writing about it do you know what
- 28:23Speaker 4: I mean not really knowing what's going on around you
- 28:25Speaker 4: you were just whereas.
- 28:27Speaker 6: Like maybe we it did definitely lead on a bit
- 28:29Speaker 6: like burnout yeah even like up to like two years
- 28:31Speaker 6: ago the two.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Of us were just and that's probably why we brought
- 28:35Speaker 4: the people in to help us and it didn't really
- 28:37Speaker 4: go the way we wanted it to do you mean
- 28:39Speaker 4: just because we needed a we needed a step back
- 28:41Speaker 4: of being like like we've been in this for a
- 28:43Speaker 4: long time like i said my my marriage broke down
- 28:46Speaker 4: probably because of a lot of things to do with
- 28:48Speaker 4: being inspired do you mean and it just it probably
- 28:51Speaker 4: consumed our lives for like 10 years so obviously we
- 28:54Speaker 4: looked at maybe bringing somebody in and i think the.
- 28:56Speaker 6: One lesson that would take into the next new brand
- 28:59Speaker 6: is basically like you don't need to chase and push
- 29:02Speaker 6: for like a mad turnover of money because it's just vanity.
- 29:05Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:06Speaker 6: It's like, can you sustain a lifestyle that you want
- 29:10Speaker 6: to be? And I think that's why we've chose golf
- 29:11Speaker 6: because that's kind of been our get out for the
- 29:13Speaker 6: last maybe 10 months.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Is that actually right? Yeah, a million percent.
- 29:18Speaker 6: And even like last year when things weren't going well,
- 29:21Speaker 6: like the people we'd hired to put in the business,
- 29:24Speaker 6: they were quite like, no, you just go and, we've
- 29:26Speaker 6: got everyone taken care of, but it was a lot
- 29:29Speaker 6: different than that.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:30Speaker 7: Just, so is it to put it online then with
- 29:33Speaker 7: the new stuff or are we going into shops as well.
- 29:36Speaker 4: We've got like a whole business plan yeah we've got
- 29:38Speaker 4: an idea so like I think initially we'd start online
- 29:41Speaker 4: because that's what we know and what we feel is
- 29:43Speaker 4: we're quite good at and we can get it out
- 29:45Speaker 4: there but we'd like to try and get it in
- 29:47Speaker 4: sort of pro shops there's not many independent retailers around
- 29:51Speaker 4: the country like JD and Foot Asylum and then all
- 29:54Speaker 4: the independent ones sort of struggle on the high street
- 29:56Speaker 4: whereas like every golf course has got a pro shop
- 29:58Speaker 4: you know what I mean so If we can get
- 30:00Speaker 4: into a few pro shops around the country, that'd be successful.
- 30:02Speaker 6: Every pro shop's got facilities right next to it, so
- 30:05Speaker 6: if guys finish on the course and go to the
- 30:07Speaker 6: pro shop, they can go, well, I haven't gone out
- 30:08Speaker 6: this afternoon. You can pick up a pair of trousers
- 30:11Speaker 6: and a quarter zip or a polo shirt or a t-shirt.
- 30:13Speaker 4: It's also suitable to be playing golf as well, but
- 30:15Speaker 4: you can also go out on it as well.
- 30:16Speaker 3: So that's kind of like a bit of a hybrid
- 30:18Speaker 3: approach if we can do that. That's our plan, so
- 30:20Speaker 3: we'll just see how it goes. Something a bit different
- 30:21Speaker 3: as well. I don't see many of this. So where
- 30:24Speaker 3: is all this stuff? Where do you.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Source it from?
- 30:27Speaker 4: Sourced it from China just now still yeah China I
- 30:30Speaker 4: was going to.
- 30:30Speaker 2: Head over that big guy in the stall no I
- 30:32Speaker 2: don't do you know what I still keep in touch
- 30:34Speaker 2: with him I still keep in touch.
- 30:35Speaker 6: With him good guy he actually does a lot of
- 30:38Speaker 6: work for Puma and champion them so he's growing it's
- 30:41Speaker 6: been good to see him grow over the years so
- 30:43Speaker 6: he was just a wee stall just a wee tiny
- 30:45Speaker 6: stall in a big multi-storey building wild how people's lives
- 30:50Speaker 6: progress with business so aye.
- 30:53Speaker 2: You were doing what was the thing I've seen online
- 30:56Speaker 2: you were doing some sort of competition for part of
- 30:58Speaker 2: your launch so.
- 30:59Speaker 4: Yes tomorrow actually so we've run a at Hags the
- 31:02Speaker 4: castle the course I'm a member of they've agreed to
- 31:05Speaker 4: sort of open sorry host an open sort of care
- 31:08Speaker 4: and invitational day so we ran a competition to get
- 31:12Speaker 4: people involved kind of wanted to create a community with
- 31:14Speaker 4: it as well so it's not just like products selling
- 31:16Speaker 4: clothes we wanted to create like a sort of golf
- 31:18Speaker 4: sort of community for people yeah so it was like
- 31:22Speaker 4: four winners and then they picked like a four ball
- 31:24Speaker 4: sort of to the other people so we announced that
- 31:27Speaker 4: on Sunday and everyone's sort of sorted now it's been
- 31:30Speaker 4: a bit of back and forth people pulling out and
- 31:33Speaker 4: not as easy as we would like to have got
- 31:35Speaker 4: 16 players but everyone's sorted now so the day's all
- 31:38Speaker 4: organised looking forward to it got.
- 31:40Speaker 6: A wee trophy in that got a trophy Andy Barman
- 31:42Speaker 6: he donated a trophy.
- 31:44Speaker 4: So he does like is it Soccer Shop Direct so
- 31:46Speaker 4: he does like kids like strips and stuff like that
- 31:49Speaker 4: So he's donated a trophy for us, helped us.
- 31:51Speaker 6: We've got quite a few sponsors, actually. Like Aleph Goff,
- 31:54Speaker 6: we've donated a floorball. Another business donated a gift voucher
- 31:58Speaker 6: for Trendy Golf.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Trendy Golf, aye. It's been quite good. It's been really amazing.
- 32:04Speaker 3: I think we had so many people sign up for
- 32:06Speaker 3: it as well.
- 32:07Speaker 2: I think you'll get a spin-off, obviously, from being inspired
- 32:11Speaker 2: as well. Because I was listening to your stuff, you're
- 32:13Speaker 2: talking about age as well. We're all getting older, and
- 32:17Speaker 2: your fashion maybe... kind of coincides with getting older go.
- 32:21Speaker 1: For comfort more than well you'll get people.
- 32:24Speaker 2: That were buying that be inspired that are obviously maybe
- 32:26Speaker 2: looking at something a wee bit different as well so
- 32:27Speaker 2: you'll get a fall off it's.
- 32:29Speaker 4: Kind of like what you're wearing it feels like see
- 32:30Speaker 4: when you're a bit younger you kind of probably all
- 32:32Speaker 4: of us like it's like very branded and then as
- 32:35Speaker 4: you get older it kind of becomes a bit more
- 32:36Speaker 4: plainer so it's kind of it's going to be have
- 32:38Speaker 4: branding on it but it's going to be a cleaner
- 32:39Speaker 4: sort of look so it sort of maybe stands the
- 32:41Speaker 4: test of time so it's probably targeting more like 30
- 32:44Speaker 4: to 50 year olds that really like an active lifestyle
- 32:47Speaker 4: it's a kind of mindset sort of thing isn't it
- 32:49Speaker 4: age age doesn't really matter too much i think it's
- 32:51Speaker 4: like that sort of active like you're still both very
- 32:53Speaker 4: active do you know what i mean my young lad's
- 32:55Speaker 4: 19 and he tried on the samples and he came
- 32:57Speaker 4: through and he went.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Dad, I just feel like you in this. And he says,
- 33:11Speaker 3: but I'll tell you what, I actually really like it.
- 33:13Speaker 6: And that's coming from a 19-year-old who's like, I'll wear that.
- 33:17Speaker 6: But even if our content and our audience is 30-plus,
- 33:21Speaker 6: then it's good to have that younger audience actually saying.
- 33:23Speaker 3: Well, I'll wear that as well. But we're not really
- 33:26Speaker 3: pushing that golf thing. Brilliant.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Well, guys, it's been really interesting. I think we'll finish
- 33:34Speaker 2: with some recommendations. What we'd like to do is get
- 33:38Speaker 2: you to recommend a film. I don't know if you've
- 33:40Speaker 2: done any films. A song and an album for the
- 33:43Speaker 2: next guest.
- 33:44Speaker 3: Who does he watch films?
- 33:46Speaker 2: We had Michael Stewart on who recommended a book. So
- 33:49Speaker 2: we're going to start from scratch today. So can you
- 33:51Speaker 2: give us a recommendation for a film for our next guest?
- 33:56Speaker 1: A song and an album. You can split it between
- 33:58Speaker 1: the two of you.
- 33:58Speaker 3: A song and an album.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Well.
- 34:01Speaker 3: Film. My favourite film is The Usual Suspects.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Good film.
- 34:04Speaker 4: I think, obviously, once you've seen it once, you've... Oh, right.
- 34:07Speaker 4: But I think that's a great film.
- 34:08Speaker 1: That is a great film.
- 34:10Speaker 3: Loved that film. I fucking shit this stuff.
- 34:12Speaker 6: Songs.
- 34:13Speaker 1: He can help you out. Songs.
- 34:14Speaker 3: I was in Ibiza recently. So I just like... I
- 34:18Speaker 3: like dance tunes, so I still like house music and that.
- 34:21Speaker 4: So I went to... It was a DJ I'd not
- 34:23Speaker 4: seen before, Mal P. I went to see him at Pasha.
- 34:26Speaker 3: He was class. Anything by him, really, then I'll... Come on,
- 34:30Speaker 3: wee man, you've got.
- 34:31Speaker 1: To give us something.
- 34:33Speaker 6: There's a band, I'm not sure, I think the album's
- 34:36Speaker 6: called 3AM. It's Matchbox 20 from back in the day.
- 34:39Speaker 6: I still listen to them in the car now and again.
- 34:41Speaker 6: Very good. There's your three recommendations. Thanks again for coming in, guys.
- 34:46Speaker 6: Wishes all the best with the new brand. And we
- 34:50Speaker 6: might even get ourselves a wee... Ah, you'll get yourself
- 34:52Speaker 6: a few days.
- 34:53Speaker 3: Top men, thanks again.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Cheers.
- 34:54Speaker 7: Cheers.
