- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up
- 0:06Speaker 1: thy bed, and walk. John 5.8 Today is the day, Lord.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Today is the day that I have decided to pick
- 0:15Speaker 1: up my mat and walk. No longer will I lay
- 0:20Speaker 1: amongst the sick and do nothing to change my condition
- 0:22Speaker 1: in life. When I am at the place called Bethesda,
- 0:27Speaker 1: the house of grace, I will not miss my moment
- 0:30Speaker 1: to step into the stirring of your power, to receive
- 0:34Speaker 1: the newness that I desire. When defeating thoughts within myself
- 0:39Speaker 1: tell me to become comfortable with my condition, I will
- 0:43Speaker 1: yell no. No to mediocrity. No to illness. No to laziness.
- 0:51Speaker 1: And no to complacency. This is my year of breakthrough.
- 0:57Speaker 1: This is my year of healing, and nothing will stand
- 1:00Speaker 1: in my way from receiving what's mine. So I speak
- 1:04Speaker 1: to myself and say, Get up. I speak to my
- 1:08Speaker 1: mind and say, Wake up. Jesus has already given me
- 1:13Speaker 1: the green light to move on and to be well,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and that's exactly what I'm going to do. It doesn't
- 1:21Speaker 1: matter how long I've battled, for I am getting up
- 1:25Speaker 1: more and moving on. In Jesus' name, amen. Healing at
- 1:31Speaker 1: the Pool Healing at the Pool.
- 1:58Speaker 2: In our last story, Jesus displayed his compassionate power over
- 2:01Speaker 2: sickness and death. He healed a woman who was afflicted
- 2:04Speaker 2: with chronic bleeding. He took a little girl that had
- 2:07Speaker 2: passed and restored her life. Jesus did these things to
- 2:11Speaker 2: show the whole world that sickness and death did not
- 2:13Speaker 2: rule over him the same way it did humanity. Now
- 2:17Speaker 2: we see Jesus heals a man who has been afflicted
- 2:19Speaker 2: with sickness and.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Bitterness his whole life.
- 2:22Speaker 2: The Pharisees keep a close watch on him to see
- 2:24Speaker 2: if he will slip, as inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Hello and welcome to the Bible in a Year podcast.
- 2:33Speaker 4: I'm Jack Graham. In our last episode, we heard how
- 2:36Speaker 4: the Lord Jesus healed a woman who had been stricken
- 2:39Speaker 4: with a debilitating and isolating bleeding disorder her entire life.
- 2:44Speaker 4: She had incredible faith, believing that just a touch of Jesus'
- 2:49Speaker 4: garment could make her whole, and it did. We also
- 2:53Speaker 4: learned how Jesus raised a young girl from the dead,
- 2:56Speaker 4: speaking words to her that resonate in our own hearts
- 2:59Speaker 4: even today. I say to you, arise. Today, we'll learn
- 3:04Speaker 4: of another healing that brought both rejoicing to some and
- 3:08Speaker 4: scorn to others. We will see how the Pharisees' burdensome
- 3:12Speaker 4: additions to God's perfect law have led people astray from
- 3:16Speaker 4: God's true purpose for His people, a purpose to which
- 3:20Speaker 4: Jesus is calling them to return. So, let's hear today's
- 3:24Speaker 4: reading from God's Word.
- 3:27Speaker 2: The sun rose over the great city of Jerusalem. The
- 3:31Speaker 2: light streamed through the city streets, and people emerged from
- 3:34Speaker 2: their homes ready to celebrate the great feast of the Jews.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Jesus watched as thousands of people flocked to different holy
- 3:42Speaker 2: sites to pray, celebrate, and sing. During the celebration each
- 3:47Speaker 2: year there is said to be a special touch of God.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Annually it is said that an angel comes and touches
- 3:54Speaker 2: the pool of Bethesda. Any person who comes in with
- 3:57Speaker 2: an illness is healed of their sickness.
- 3:59Speaker 3: So the story goes.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Jesus knew this was the place he needed to be.
- 4:05Speaker 2: There was a man he wanted to see. The sun
- 4:07Speaker 2: was high above the sky and Jesus watched as hundreds
- 4:11Speaker 2: of blind, lame and paralyzed people were carried by their
- 4:14Speaker 2: friends to.
- 4:15Speaker 3: The pools below.
- 4:16Speaker 2: With hope in their eyes, they were dipped in slowly,
- 4:19Speaker 2: hoping to catch a sliver of God's favor. Laying off
- 4:23Speaker 2: the side away from the pools was a man. He
- 4:26Speaker 2: looked sickly and was clearly unable to walk He had
- 4:30Speaker 2: been there a long time, desiring to be healed, but
- 4:33Speaker 2: having no way to walk over himself. Jesus strolled over
- 4:37Speaker 2: and sat beside him. The two of them looked at
- 4:40Speaker 2: the pools, watching flocks of people dip in for healing. Jesus,
- 4:45Speaker 2: without looking at the man, simply asked, Do you want
- 4:48Speaker 2: to be healed? The sick man turned his head in disgust.
- 4:53Speaker 2: He was offended by Jesus' question. As you can see, sir,
- 4:57Speaker 2: I have no one to help me into the pools.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Even if I could hobble my way over, everyone cuts
- 5:02Speaker 2: in line. The man crossed his arms in contempt. He
- 5:07Speaker 2: stared at the pool and watched people being led in
- 5:09Speaker 2: by their friends. He wore bitterness like a warm blanket.
- 5:14Speaker 3: He cursed them all under his breath.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Jesus could see that much of this man's sickness was
- 5:20Speaker 2: due to his lack of friends. He sat from afar
- 5:23Speaker 2: feeling sorry for himself. Get up from your bed and walk,
- 5:28Speaker 2: Jesus said.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Then Jesus stood up and began walking away.
- 5:32Speaker 2: The man was about to curse Jesus, but then he
- 5:35Speaker 2: felt a warm rush up his body. Strength returned to
- 5:39Speaker 2: his legs and his stomach ailments cleared. The man was
- 5:42Speaker 2: completely healed and watched as Jesus walked away. He wept,
- 5:47Speaker 2: knowing that his bad attitude had robbed him of truly
- 5:50Speaker 2: experiencing his healing to the fullest. The man stood up,
- 5:55Speaker 2: took his bed, and walked toward.
- 5:56Speaker 3: The temple to worship.
- 5:59Speaker 2: The man skipped with the newfound strength in his legs.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Joy began to fill his heart as he thought.
- 6:04Speaker 3: About what had happened. Who was that man, he thought
- 6:07Speaker 3: to himself.
- 6:09Speaker 2: As he was carrying his bed to the temple, a
- 6:11Speaker 2: group of Pharisees stopped him.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Stop, they shouted.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Don't you know that it is not lawful to carry
- 6:18Speaker 2: anything that heavy on the Sabbath?
- 6:20Speaker 3: Why do you pick up your bed and carry it
- 6:22Speaker 3: with you?
- 6:23Speaker 2: Normally the man would have spat in return, but that
- 6:26Speaker 2: was the old and bitter man. Now all he desired
- 6:30Speaker 2: to do was to worship freely. There was a man
- 6:33Speaker 2: who healed me, the man responded. He is the one
- 6:36Speaker 2: who told me to pick up my bed and walk.
- 6:39Speaker 2: So here I am, walking with my bed. The Pharisees
- 6:43Speaker 2: scoffed for a moment. They knew exactly who.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Was to blame for this. Jesus had healed this man.
- 6:50Speaker 3: But they had to know for sure. Who was the
- 6:52Speaker 3: man that told you to break our Sabbath rules, they asked.
- 6:56Speaker 2: However, the man did not know. He shrugged and smiled,
- 7:00Speaker 2: then began to walk away. Soon after, Jesus walked towards
- 7:04Speaker 2: the temple and saw the man he had healed. The
- 7:06Speaker 2: two saw each.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Other and embraced.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I see you are well,' Jesus exclaimed.' Now go and
- 7:12Speaker 2: sin no more, my friend.
- 7:14Speaker 3: The man.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Nodded and skipped towards the temple to live a new
- 7:18Speaker 2: life of purpose. The religious leaders scorned Jesus. They hated
- 7:23Speaker 2: him for breaking their nuanced and man-made laws and They
- 7:27Speaker 2: added to God's law for control, and they despised the
- 7:30Speaker 2: fact that they did not have a chokehold on Jesus
- 7:33Speaker 2: and his followers. They pressed him about healing on the Sabbath.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Jesus rose his hand up to interrupt them. My Father
- 7:40Speaker 2: is about his work, so I shall be about my work.
- 7:44Speaker 3: So the Jews sought to kill him, for he claimed
- 7:47Speaker 3: equality with God.
- 7:52Speaker 4: We begin today's reading at a site known as the
- 7:55Speaker 4: Sheep's Gate, where... There was a pool of waters that
- 7:58Speaker 4: the people used for bathing, but which was also believed
- 8:01Speaker 4: to have healing properties. And so, around the pool, there
- 8:05Speaker 4: were gathered scores of physically lame, crippled people who were
- 8:09Speaker 4: seeking wholeness and healing for their physical ailments. Among them
- 8:14Speaker 4: was a man who could not walk, and for 38
- 8:17Speaker 4: years he had helplessly waited and hoped that his body
- 8:20Speaker 4: would be made well. But as we also will discover,
- 8:24Speaker 4: this man's infirmity was not just physical. Perhaps after years
- 8:29Speaker 4: of trying to no avail or perhaps through learned helplessness,
- 8:33Speaker 4: this man was stuck, literally and figuratively, stuck in a
- 8:38Speaker 4: state of sadness and even self-pity. And it's at this
- 8:42Speaker 4: point that he meets Jesus, who had come to the
- 8:45Speaker 4: pool on that Sabbath morning. Jesus asked the man a
- 8:49Speaker 4: simple question that may even sound insulting to because the
- 8:52Speaker 4: answer is so obvious. He asks if the man wants
- 8:56Speaker 4: to be healed. The man doesn't really answer the question, however.
- 9:00Speaker 4: He just begins to give Jesus reasons why he can't
- 9:03Speaker 4: be healed, how no one could help him. Other people
- 9:07Speaker 4: always jumped in front of him in line. You see,
- 9:11Speaker 4: it was believed that on occasion the waters of the
- 9:13Speaker 4: pool would be stirred, and when that happened, the first
- 9:16Speaker 4: people in the pool would be healed. Whether this was
- 9:19Speaker 4: true or not, we do not know for sure, but
- 9:22Speaker 4: His answer tells us something important about his mindset and
- 9:26Speaker 4: really that of all who came to that place. To them,
- 9:30Speaker 4: healing was not available at all. They were operating on
- 9:33Speaker 4: the mindset of scarcity. There wasn't enough good to go around.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Only a few could be fortunate enough to get to
- 9:40Speaker 4: the water. Little did he know that the one to
- 9:44Speaker 4: whom he was speaking knew nothing of scarcity because he
- 9:48Speaker 4: was the God, he is the God of abundance. the
- 9:52Speaker 4: God who loves to heal and to restore. Jesus loves
- 9:56Speaker 4: to heal not only physical ailments, but the spiritual immobility.
- 10:00Speaker 4: that plague his people. Jesus paid no attention to the
- 10:04Speaker 4: man's negativity and excuses. He looked at him with compassion
- 10:08Speaker 4: and spoke, saying, Pick up your bed and walk. Immediately
- 10:12Speaker 4: the man was healed. Imagine feeling sensations like strength and
- 10:17Speaker 4: motion in the limbs that your mind seemed to have
- 10:19Speaker 4: long since forgotten. How joyful, how glad this man must
- 10:23Speaker 4: have felt as strength rushed into his muscles and tendons
- 10:27Speaker 4: and allowed him to do just what Jesus commanded. He
- 10:30Speaker 4: picked up his mat and went on his way. But
- 10:34Speaker 4: when he crossed paths with the Pharisees who had gathered
- 10:36Speaker 4: at the temple that Sabbath, rather than rejoicing in this
- 10:40Speaker 4: miraculous healing power of Jesus, The religious zealots chastised him
- 10:44Speaker 4: for carrying his bed on the Sabbath. To them, this
- 10:47Speaker 4: counted as work, and Jews were not to work on
- 10:50Speaker 4: that day. This man was so excited about his newfound
- 10:54Speaker 4: mobility and hope that he was eager to share that
- 10:58Speaker 4: a man had healed him and told him to pick
- 10:59Speaker 4: up his mat. However, Jesus had not told him who
- 11:03Speaker 4: he was, so when pressed, he couldn't reveal an identity
- 11:07Speaker 4: to the Pharisees. They found out soon enough, though, because
- 11:11Speaker 4: Jesus found the man again. You see, he had healed
- 11:14Speaker 4: the man's physical condition, but Jesus was also concerned about
- 11:18Speaker 4: the man's heart condition. So he told him to go,
- 11:22Speaker 4: be well, and sin no more. The truth is that
- 11:25Speaker 4: this is the healing that God is most interested in,
- 11:28Speaker 4: the healing of the soul. It is why Jesus came,
- 11:32Speaker 4: to restore our broken fellowship with God. And so the
- 11:36Speaker 4: man went away again, and this time when asked, He
- 11:39Speaker 4: could say it was Jesus who healed him. The Pharisees,
- 11:43Speaker 4: of course, were angered and rebuked Jesus because to them,
- 11:46Speaker 4: healing was work and forbidden on the Sabbath. That's the
- 11:51Speaker 4: level of oppression to which they had taken the law,
- 11:53Speaker 4: concerned more about the outer appearance of righteousness than an
- 11:57Speaker 4: inward condition of holiness and healing that comes from God. Jesus,
- 12:03Speaker 4: as always, stood his ground. And he said in John 5, 17,
- 12:06Speaker 4: But Jesus answered them, My father is working until now
- 12:11Speaker 4: and I am working. The religious leaders burned with anger
- 12:15Speaker 4: and hatred at this because Jesus was equating himself with
- 12:19Speaker 4: God and sadly they could not see that he had
- 12:21Speaker 4: every reason to make this claim. Their spiritual blindness kept
- 12:25Speaker 4: them from seeing the abundance and healing that was available
- 12:28Speaker 4: to them as well right in front of their eyes. Jesus'
- 12:32Speaker 4: words to them are ones we as his followers today
- 12:35Speaker 4: will do well to remember and emulate. God is still working.
- 12:39Speaker 4: and so should we. We are to be about the
- 12:41Speaker 4: business of the kingdom. Do the work of Christ, regardless
- 12:45Speaker 4: of what it costs and who it may anger, because
- 12:49Speaker 4: this is what we are called to do as followers
- 12:51Speaker 4: of Jesus. We are to bring hope and healing in Jesus'
- 12:55Speaker 4: name to a broken world. Dear God, thank you that
- 12:59Speaker 4: you are calling us today, offering us healing deep within,
- 13:03Speaker 4: the healing of our hearts, the healing of our souls,
- 13:06Speaker 4: the forgiveness of sins, and a new life in you.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Help us now to work for your kingdom, not as
- 13:12Speaker 4: an act of earning our way of salvation, but of
- 13:15Speaker 4: expressing our love and devotion and obedience and gratitude to
- 13:19Speaker 4: you for healing our souls. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
