Latest / Sports Card Clubhouse / Talking Hobby Fatigue w/ Baseball Collector Mike Moynihan!
Transcript
- 0:00Hey everybody, it is the Mike and Mike show today.
- 0:03Normally this is this week in sports cards, but not much
- 0:07happened in sports cards this week.
- 0:09And when that happens, I like to bring on the big brains to talk
- 0:12about interesting topics. And today I didn't find any big
- 0:15brains, so I got Mike Moynihan here.
- 0:17Baseball collector. Mike, how are you?
- 0:20That's accurate, Mike. I appreciate that and thank you.
- 0:25I want to say thank you. You did your video on your You 2
- 0:31Sports Card Hall of Fame ballot and you were very complimentary
- 0:34of me. I appreciate that.
- 0:35Oh, well, I mean it. I, you are you and Chris, Chris
- 0:40from Missouri have this very unique way about you that people
- 0:45want to listen to everything you say.
- 0:47And so it's great to have you here today because we're going
- 0:51to talk about an interesting topic that you proposed.
- 0:52Why don't you? Why don't you talk about it a
- 0:54little bit? Well, you mentioned there's no
- 0:57hobby drama this week, and I think there's a whole bunch of
- 1:04different ways that this hobby can fatigue us, right?
- 1:09And that's it. I'll use that generic term of
- 1:11hobby fatigue for all kinds of different ways that we can just
- 1:15go. You know what, I need to take a
- 1:16step back. I need to chill for a minute.
- 1:19Whether it's money, grading, hobby, drama, buying car, you
- 1:23know, we're going to go through a lot of this.
- 1:26I hope and discuss it and hopefully you guys can resonate
- 1:31with some of it because you're not weird if you feel that way.
- 1:35I guess that's what I want to say.
- 1:37It's normal, right? Absolutely.
- 1:40And we should clarify, first of all, there there's always a
- 1:43little bit of hobby drama. Like this week Ken Golden said
- 1:45some really stupid stuff. The The Pikachu Illustrator sold
- 1:50for $16,000,000. And these are things I just
- 1:51don't care about. I don't want to talk about them.
- 1:54And this is my podcast, so I'm just not going to talk about
- 1:56things I don't care about. So that's why I'd rather have
- 2:00Mike on to talk to him. So, yeah.
- 2:02But we can all relate to your topic, Mike.
- 2:04I think we all have it. I mentioned it a little bit
- 2:06yesterday in my video about when I say yesterday, this will air
- 2:10on Monday and it was on my Thursday video of sometimes I
- 2:14just want to shut my channel down.
- 2:15I think this is so frustrating. And that's part of what you
- 2:18wanted to talk about. Well, yeah, you can get, I think
- 2:23there's YouTube fatigue. I mean, there's a reason that
- 2:25people end up not continuing a channel, for example.
- 2:30They'll start one, come out like gangbusters, do all these
- 2:33videos, and I think a lot of people start their channel and
- 2:39burn really hot for a short period of time.
- 2:43They burn out and they end up leaving.
- 2:45That happens a lot. It's happened a lot over my
- 2:48time, you know. And that's just a small subset
- 2:52of hobby fatigue that, that you wanted to talk about.
- 2:56So let's talk a little bit about YouTube fatigue and not just
- 3:00having a channel, but also watching YouTube videos.
- 3:05I've, I've largely taken a break from a lot of YouTube over the
- 3:08last two. I don't know, two months or so.
- 3:12Does does that ever happened to you?
- 3:13I know you're a big YouTube guy. Yes, of course it does.
- 3:20I get fatigued with it because it's hard to be creative.
- 3:24You want to see something different, you want to see
- 3:26something new and you know, you watch a card show video and guys
- 3:31are showing, you know 50s, you know golden era tables with
- 3:35showcases and seen it 100 times, you know seen it 1000 times.
- 3:41And so the the problem with YouTube is if you're, the longer
- 3:47you do it, the more everything becomes redundant, the more
- 3:51everything becomes essentially a replay of something you've
- 3:54already seen and you know, you want to discover stuff.
- 4:00You, I think there's a desire, innate desire to find something
- 4:04new, to find something that's done a little bit different.
- 4:09Like I watched Dawn Field of Dreams YouTube ballot and I
- 4:14loved it because it was different.
- 4:16You know, I don't know if you've seen it yet.
- 4:18It was fantastic. Just I I just I don't want to
- 4:23watch another video and I bet people feel that way watching my
- 4:27videos. Truthfully.
- 4:29No, I'm serious. Oh, there's another five star
- 4:33auto or there's another. You know, I don't know, it's
- 4:36just I I could see that and that doesn't mean I'm going to change
- 4:40how I do my channel. It just means that I would
- 4:42understand if someone said, yeah, I'm going to take a break
- 4:45from Mike for a little bit. You know, that would not
- 4:49surprise me nor upset me. I would totally understand.
- 4:53Yeah. And you say, you mentioned that
- 4:56you hear, you've heard the same things a million times from
- 4:58various creators. And sometimes we ourselves, you,
- 5:02me, other creators say the same things repeatedly.
- 5:04And people hear the same things from us over and over and over
- 5:08again. And that's got to be fatiguing
- 5:09too. And not just, but not just a
- 5:11round of various channels, but if you watch every single one of
- 5:15my videos, you're going to hear me say the same things, and I'm
- 5:17sure the same thing with you. And if you, if there's a piece
- 5:22of hobby drama, pick your thing, right?
- 5:26It gets plastered over everyone's channel and I just
- 5:29go, Yep, I don't want to watch another video about that.
- 5:32What even if I like the creator? You know, it's like this is the
- 5:3814th video on XYZ problem in the hobby.
- 5:42No thanks. You know I'll skip that.
- 5:44Yeah, Neo talks about the benefit of being first on
- 5:48something like that. And, and there's legitimate
- 5:50benefits because you're the first person that people are
- 5:52going to see talk about it. YouTube will carry yours for a
- 5:56while. And the the benefit is there
- 6:01that nobody's already seen that so far.
- 6:03So they are like, oh, this is interesting.
- 6:06So some sort of big hobby drama that happens.
- 6:09Now I don't have the time anymore to get out the big
- 6:12videos quickly and so I try to wait and see what happens.
- 6:15And then is there an interesting angle that I can take on this?
- 6:19And if not, then I just don't cover it except like a quick
- 6:22blurb during my Sunday clearing the bases episode.
- 6:26Another place where the being first is helpful is I try to and
- 6:31have for years. I want to be the first to put
- 6:34out a national video, one of the first right.
- 6:36And so I've had the blessing of being able to get in super early
- 6:42every year and I want to show the floor.
- 6:46I want to show the set up. I want to show all the stuff and
- 6:48be the first one to do that. And those view those videos get
- 6:52a tremendous amount of traction because people are going the
- 6:57especially the ones that can't be there and, and honestly, even
- 7:00the ones that can, but they're not coming till say I'm in there
- 7:03on Wednesday showing Wednesday morning, showing all the stuff.
- 7:06They're not going to be there till Thursday, Friday.
- 7:08They're like, oh, let me check it out and see what it's going
- 7:10to be, you know, So there's some benefit to that too, being first
- 7:15or early. Yeah, you mentioned the
- 7:17National. That's a good segue to card show
- 7:19fatigue too. And you know, I think that
- 7:22during the early, mid stages of the pandemic, let's say early
- 7:272021 into 2022, there was a lot of a lot of appetite for card
- 7:34show videos. And you saw those get 10s of
- 7:38thousands of views sometimes. Now they don't so much because
- 7:41everybody can go to a card show, almost not don't comment saying
- 7:44I can't go to when I live 1000 miles from a card show.
- 7:47But so many people, there's so many card shows now and almost
- 7:51everybody can get to a card show.
- 7:53And is there card show fatigue not just in viewing them but
- 7:59also going to them? Yes, if I went to a card show
- 8:05every week or every couple weeks, OK.
- 8:10And because I want something to be special, I want something to
- 8:13be different. I've I've that's kind of a
- 8:16theme, right? Special and different are things
- 8:20that keep the hobby fresh, things that keep the hobby
- 8:24feeling like it's not a drag. And the Dallas show, for
- 8:30example, I have one of the biggest card shows in the
- 8:32country in my backyard, so to speak.
- 8:35I go once or twice a year maybe. How many times does I have it?
- 8:406 * a year, it's every other month and then there's Dallas
- 8:43card show offshoots in the Metroplex every month.
- 8:47So you could go to a card show every three to four weeks, A big
- 8:52one. And what I would tell people
- 8:55say, oh, I had that. I'd go every month.
- 8:57Or what would you like? I, I would, I would challenge
- 9:00you and say you might for a little bit.
- 9:03And then you'd be like, OK, I've seen that that because be
- 9:08honestly, when I go to the Dallas show, it's not that
- 9:10different from the last one, even if it was a year ago.
- 9:14And card shows to me have always been one of those super fun
- 9:21things. Like for me now I want to fly to
- 9:24the Philly show. I want to go, I went to the net
- 9:2854 gathering in DC in Dulles. I want to do things.
- 9:32I want to have different card show experiences.
- 9:34I don't want the same old card show experience.
- 9:37I want to do something different and to traveling to shows, which
- 9:43then adds a layer of expense. You know, if, if I'm going to
- 9:48travel to a show, I'm not just going to go for a day like I
- 9:50could at the Dallas show, for example, I want to go for three
- 9:53or four days. Well, then you're committing
- 9:55time and you know, it's it changes the dynamic of it, but
- 10:01it makes it OK. I'm not going to do that every
- 10:04month or every time there is one.
- 10:06I'm going to go only when like I'm looking to go to the
- 10:09September Philly show, for example, but I have, but then
- 10:13that adds the aspect of it takes away the fatigue because I'm not
- 10:17feeling like I have to go all the time.
- 10:19And it creates something out in the future that I can anticipate
- 10:22and look forward to. And I think that's a key to
- 10:24hobby happiness is dude, that's it.
- 10:28We could, you could do a video on keys to hobby happiness.
- 10:32You should do that. Put that in your Rolodex.
- 10:35But. More people will watch yours.
- 10:37You have more Subs, so that is a good video topic.
- 10:43It is. It's a hobby.
- 10:44Yeah. OK, I'm going to put that.
- 10:46You should do it. Yeah.
- 10:48So I don't want this to be seen as like criticism of the Dallas
- 10:51Card show or the Portland ME Card show, cause the Portland ME
- 10:54Card Show is very well organized and done.
- 10:57But I used to go, they have it every single month.
- 10:58And I used to go, I don't know, 8 or 9 * a year in 2020, 123 and
- 11:05probably 2024, but it gets to a point where it's the same
- 11:09dealers every month. And do I, do I really want to go
- 11:12every single month? And the answer is no.
- 11:16I've gotten fatigued of that card show.
- 11:18And you know, the, the, the national even is an amazing,
- 11:25amazing event. And it's almost to the point now
- 11:28where I'm only going to hang out with friends, people that I've
- 11:31met in the hobby that I want to see and go to events like the
- 11:34YouTube card together that you YouTube get together that you
- 11:38put on. It's just like they're the how
- 11:44many cards am I going to buy one or two?
- 11:46Is that worth the thousands of dollars I'm going to spend?
- 11:49No, but the the going to see friends is.
- 11:54Yeah, it yeah, this isn't a knock on card shows.
- 11:59I want them to do as many card shows as they want to do because
- 12:02there's somebody that, you know, if they only did it once a year,
- 12:07look, I mean look at Strongsville once a year, right,
- 12:10as a kind of regional show, right.
- 12:12It's kind of specialty show. If they had Strongsville at
- 12:16Strongsville type show every other month or four or five,
- 12:21four times a year, whatever, right.
- 12:23A It wouldn't be a special, but there are people that could only
- 12:27go. They can't go in April when it's
- 12:29happening. They could go another time of
- 12:30the year potentially. And so having a Dallas show, for
- 12:33example, that often and other shows just gives the hobby
- 12:39meaning collectors and other people in the hobby, more
- 12:43opportunities. I think the more opportunities
- 12:45there are, the better. That just doesn't mean I have to
- 12:47participate, right? Yeah, absolutely.
- 12:52Is that a paradox? Is that weird?
- 12:55No, I think it makes perfect sense.
- 12:56The Shriner show in outside of Boston is similar.
- 12:59I think there's two a year and one of them is must attend.
- 13:04It's in November and there's nothing for me.
- 13:07You go to the National in late July and then there's nothing
- 13:10until three months later, end of October, early November, but the
- 13:14Shriners snapping at the dog. Yes, my dogs, Norman and Claire
- 13:21have both decided to to bark. There's somebody here at the
- 13:25house. Sorry, yeah, no, that's OK.
- 13:28There's I I totally get the the card show fatigue.
- 13:33What about surfing eBay for cards to get fatigued in that?
- 13:40Yes. Wow that's a good one.
- 13:44I didn't even think of that one. It's good.
- 13:46The hunt for card fatigue it Yeah, one of the joys for me.
- 13:54This is a key to hobby happiness.
- 13:56I better not ruin all this next video that I'm going to do.
- 13:59But having a lot of different projects.
- 14:02If you only had one thing. Right.
- 14:05I would think that would get very boring very fast.
- 14:09And I know people. Did we lose Mike or did we lose
- 14:17me? I can't tell.
- 14:22It looks like I'm still going. I'm going to remove Mike for a
- 14:27moment until I see him again. Is he still?
- 14:32Is he still there? Am I still here?
- 14:34I don't know. It's this weird existential
- 14:36crisis I'm having right now. Is there?
- 14:40He is. Did Norman knock your phone
- 14:47over? He did.
- 14:48I apologize my bad dude, I don't know where I went.
- 14:52That's OK. OK, actually I got a call and it
- 14:55just totally interrupted everything.
- 14:58Where are we at? EBay fatigue, right?
- 15:02I think I, I think I dropped an F1 there when that happened
- 15:04because I thought it was me having the issue and not you
- 15:06because. No, it was me.
- 15:09It was all me. Here's here, Norman Norman
- 15:13parent most famous dog on YouTube Sports Group.
- 15:20So if you only do that one thing, I'm not knocking player
- 15:23collectors. I don't know what I told you
- 15:24earlier, but to me having so many different projects, I can
- 15:29zig and zag and it and it kind of never gets boring because I
- 15:32can go. You know what?
- 15:33I'm not going to look for five stars right now.
- 15:35I'm going to look for red hearts that I need or 50 Bowman's.
- 15:40But but where I'm getting in my collecting journey is my list is
- 15:46only it sounds like a lot, but 150 cards and all of them are
- 15:51saved figured out as safe searches.
- 15:54So it kind of and now I've got the safe searches on auction
- 15:58wire, which makes it where I'm searching more than just eBay,
- 16:04right, All the auction houses and that they are affiliated
- 16:07with plug to auction wire. And no, it's a good, it's a
- 16:13great service because it's doing the work for me, right.
- 16:16And therefore, I don't, I could. If something's going to come up,
- 16:21it's going to show up. And I'm not sweating.
- 16:24Oh, what if I missed something or that, you know, 'cause the
- 16:27thing I've learned invariably is by and large, these cards are
- 16:31all readily. It's not like it's hard to find
- 16:35most of them. Certainly there are exceptions
- 16:37to that, but. Storming Norman.
- 16:43Dude, I don't even know what they're parking about.
- 16:47So yes, you can get hobby fatigue that way, right?
- 16:52If you're only only buying stupid stuff like Boston Red Sox
- 16:57refractors. I mean, who would do that?
- 17:00And you know, I never, literally never get eBay fatigue or
- 17:05searching for card fatigue. But there are times where I'll
- 17:08go 2 weeks without even looking for a card.
- 17:10But then I'll have an urge and I'll be like, oh, I got to find
- 17:13this card or I'll see a card and I think I got to go look and
- 17:16that will reignite things in me. But I never feel like I can't
- 17:23stand looking up cards right now.
- 17:25You know, it's interesting because the the dynamic of eBay
- 17:28and especially auctions. Let's take eBay first.
- 17:32Usually an auction if if it's an auction, it's a week long,
- 17:36right? Right now's are obviously in
- 17:38perpetuity, but you've got and so truly, if you if you just
- 17:43look every five days, you're probably not going to miss much,
- 17:47right, because you don't have to look every day.
- 17:53And then auction houses are an even longer wait time right
- 17:56between an inception and and ending of the auction.
- 17:59So you've got people think, oh, I got it.
- 18:02I don't want to miss something, right?
- 18:03There's this FOMO thing and I've never had that because I
- 18:08realized how it works and I don't, you know, I don't have to
- 18:11look every single day, right? Well, yeah, I mean, I, I I get
- 18:18the FOMO and also like when a when a semi rare card comes up.
- 18:23So right now I'm I'm watching. 4.
- 18:27Big cards on eBay that I want and they're not, none of them
- 18:30are rare, but they're all population of under 2 or 300.
- 18:37And so when they come up for sale, I, I'm, I'm like, oh, I've
- 18:41got to have this one. And so there is, there's
- 18:43definitely some FOMO. There sure, but yeah, you're
- 18:48right. And especially if you have
- 18:49different projects, getting tired of searching each search
- 18:52for one. OK, today I'm going to look for
- 18:54these, right? And tomorrow I'll look for
- 18:56these. If, if you feel like you have to
- 18:58every day. And I think the the key to hop
- 19:03or another key to hobby happiness is admitting it's OK
- 19:07to take a break from whatever aspect you're fatigued with that
- 19:12it's OK. Like there's nothing wrong.
- 19:15I had months, almost six months, I think, where I didn't do a
- 19:18podcast, Golden age of Cardboard podcast.
- 19:23I found that I wasn't really missing it as much as I thought
- 19:26I would. But then I thought, I have some
- 19:31things I want to talk about. So then I did it again.
- 19:33You know what I mean? I didn't, I didn't put one out
- 19:35this week because I didn't really have anything burning in
- 19:39my mind to talk about. So I'm not going to do stuff
- 19:42just to do stuff. I'm not just going to go to a
- 19:44show just to go to a show. I'm not just because I feel like
- 19:46I need to be engaged in the hobby.
- 19:48The hobby's always there for us, right?
- 19:51It's not going anywhere. It'll be there if you need to
- 19:54take a break. I'm going to probably take a
- 19:56extended time off to move, you know, once the house is done
- 20:00here and probably not do a whole lot of anything.
- 20:04And because I'm going to be focused on something else in our
- 20:07lives, whether it's you got a kid getting married or you're
- 20:10getting married or, you know, job transition, there's a whole
- 20:14lot of life circumstances that could create a gap in your hobby
- 20:18experience. And there's nothing wrong with
- 20:20that. I don't know why I hope people
- 20:23would say, well, of course Mike, like that should be the of
- 20:26course you shouldn't feel guilty about, you know, doing life
- 20:30above and beyond cards is a hobby.
- 20:34Not unless of course, you're making a living doing the hobby,
- 20:38but then it's not a hobby. Then you're in the industry
- 20:41part, right, which is very different.
- 20:44So I couldn't imagine setting up at a card show every every
- 20:50weekend like you never have a weekend.
- 20:53Yeah, yeah, I, I did like 5 videos a week for several years
- 21:00and I, I did it through the summer and felt like last year I
- 21:03was like, you know what? Last summer I, I, I should have
- 21:09been getting out and, and walking with my wife more often.
- 21:12So I decided in the summer times I want to cut way back to maybe
- 21:142 videos a week instead of the four or five during the summer.
- 21:20Spend more time outside doing stuff, doing all the things that
- 21:23I should have been doing. And I'm going to do that again
- 21:26this year. And so it's almost like a season
- 21:27where from September to May I, I do YouTube heavily because I
- 21:33love that I'm not an outdoor winter kind of guy.
- 21:35I'm not a winter kind of guy. But in the springtime, cut it
- 21:40way back and then come back in, I don't know, late September or
- 21:43so. And so I have that four months
- 21:45to rejuvenate myself. You know, we have lots of houses
- 21:49for sale in Texas. We're we don't have to worry
- 21:51about winter as much. You'll never have to shove.
- 21:55You'll never have to shovel again.
- 21:57Ever. Yeah, I, I don't really do a
- 22:00whole lot of shoveling. Snow blowing, that's where.
- 22:02It's or that you don't have to do that either.
- 22:06Yeah, and you've probably never even heard of raking the roof,
- 22:09which is another thing I have to do every storm.
- 22:11I have no idea what you're talking about.
- 22:13Yeah, it makes sense though. You got to get all the
- 22:16accumulated snow off or else. Not all of it, just the just
- 22:20over the eaves where the snow turns into an ice dam and
- 22:24prevents melting snow on the top from melting down and then it
- 22:28gets under your shingles and it leaks into your house.
- 22:31Sounds like a problem I never have to face.
- 22:34That's right. I'll send you a I'll send you a
- 22:36picture of my house and you'll see it's just the front 3 feet.
- 22:40The snow is gone and then the rest of it is still there.
- 22:44Why don't? Why aren't there more metal
- 22:45roofs there for that? It's very expensive.
- 22:48I just got a new roof. It cost me $15,000 and a metal
- 22:52roof. I got 2 quotes one was for the
- 22:54lowest was for 25,000 from the same company that offered the
- 22:59the roof. I got shingle roof for 15,000.
- 23:03Gotcha, well I just did a metal roof so no more cards for me
- 23:10apparently. OK let me ask you this, is there
- 23:15a fatigue? I I think there's even topics
- 23:19that are just fatiguing. I think talking about grading
- 23:23right can be fatiguing because, you know, I've decided to change
- 23:32SG CS name Nat Nat Turner called me and said, Hey, Mike, I want
- 23:37you to change my change that company's name because it's
- 23:41we're not calling him. Whatever they are, it's now soon
- 23:43to be gone. Company is now is SG CS new
- 23:50moniker and Nat asked me to use that publicly going forward so.
- 23:54Perfect. Yeah.
- 23:56You know the yeah, there is. I, I get the comments all the
- 24:00time on my Sunday video. And I've had to start off my
- 24:03video lately by saying this is this is not the hobby.
- 24:07This is industry stuff. Do not let this get your hobby
- 24:10down because there are a lot of people are saying, wow, I can't
- 24:13believe PSA is doing this to us. But you don't have to
- 24:16participate. You don't have to do this stuff.
- 24:18I'm interested in it because I'm a, I'm a business guy.
- 24:20I like this stuff, I like the industry, but it doesn't really
- 24:25affect me that much. And I try not to let me get it
- 24:27down, let it get me down. And people find that take which
- 24:32I, I, I stole your idea and, and used it as well in discussing
- 24:38any hobby topic with people, because I think it's a very wise
- 24:43perspective. First time you've ever been
- 24:45called wise on your own show. But it's true.
- 24:50It's and people can't believe that.
- 24:53Why won't you? You know, why doesn't it bother
- 24:55you? Why?
- 24:56Because it's, if I let all the crap in the hobby bother me, I
- 25:03wouldn't be in the hobby. And that's the problem is it
- 25:06drives people out. It makes them go, I'm done, I'm
- 25:09out. And I'm like, why would you let
- 25:11a company who you have no control over determine your
- 25:16hobby happy? That's another key to hobby
- 25:17happiness. Don't let all the crap get to
- 25:20you. That's a you problem, not a
- 25:23hobby problem. Yes, yes, exactly.
- 25:27Well said. What other types of fatigue do
- 25:31we have in the hobby? I got fatigued putting 65,000
- 25:36cards in a binder that was fatiguing.
- 25:39All in one day. Not quite.
- 25:43Julie did one set and she thought she was like, my gosh,
- 25:47how do you do that? I did 115 sets, you know, like,
- 25:51honey, keep trying, keep going. Got a few more.
- 25:56Yeah, No, if that's a there was a purpose to that and the end
- 26:01result is going to be awesome. But what other kinds of fatigue
- 26:06are there? I don't know.
- 26:11What do you think, Mike? Well, I think that the industry
- 26:13for T1 is pretty big for a lot of people.
- 26:16I think it chases a lot of people out when, when they see
- 26:19all the mistakes that Fanatics makes and the the print runs and
- 26:24the, the way that PSA is treating customers and raising
- 26:28prices and manipulating things that they say and buying up
- 26:32every company. I think that that has a big
- 26:36impact on collectors that it really shouldn't.
- 26:40You shouldn't let it impact you. But also how about the, the
- 26:44price increases of the last five years or so, Not only of wax
- 26:50because the prices have skyrocketed in the last five
- 26:54years, but also just of cards and general singles.
- 26:56You're buying singles and yes, it's great because my collection
- 27:00has gone up in value, but it also is much harder to buy the
- 27:02cards that I want. I have a extremely recent
- 27:07example of that. I just finished the 2025 TOPS
- 27:10Five Star Hall of Fame run. And in previous years from 2012
- 27:16to 2024, I was spending, I actually know the number, it was
- 27:23about $115 per card on average. And that's not true, sorry.
- 27:28About 60 bucks per card on average, which seems reasonable
- 27:32right now. This year it was about $115 per
- 27:36card. That's where the 115 is.
- 27:38I got my time. So it's Dang near double.
- 27:43And it's because fanatics decided to make five star a
- 27:48much, much higher end product, more in the definitive and kind
- 27:51of transcendent, not quite transcendent, but those types
- 27:55of, you know, high end product and therefore not it.
- 28:02It's the same for this is what's really funny.
- 28:05So pick your random Hall of Famer Johnny Bench or somebody,
- 28:09he's in 2025, he's in 2024 or whatever, 60 bucks before 2, you
- 28:15know, $200 now just because of the product that it's in.
- 28:19And it, it so because the card price per card on that product
- 28:25is higher, people are demanding more money because they want to
- 28:29try to recoup some of the cost of the boxes cases or whatever
- 28:33they're buying. And so there's a I'm like, I, I,
- 28:38I'm genuinely thinking, is this the last year I do five star?
- 28:42If it's going to be that expensive on a per card basis
- 28:47and it's not even can I afford it?
- 28:49Yes. Do I want to?
- 28:51Maybe not. You know, are there other
- 28:52things? Again, we all have to choose
- 28:56with our dollars, right? I don't.
- 28:57There's only so many hobby dollars, no matter how rich you
- 28:59are. It might have more zeros in
- 29:01front of it, but I I can't just spend whatever I want on cards.
- 29:07Right. And do they ever auction those
- 29:09or is it just buy it now? No, it's even in the auctions
- 29:13though Mike, I was finding the cards were going for
- 29:16significantly more money. In fact, I bought almost all of
- 29:19them via auction. OK.
- 29:22Which to me is the greatest form of capitalism.
- 29:26You want to find out what a card's worth?
- 29:27Put it on an auction. I just put a bunch of cards on
- 29:31COMC at auction and some of them some some slabs SGC 10s went for
- 29:39like $3 and I knew they would go low and I was thinking more like
- 29:4410 but that's OK. Yeah, so it's it's making me
- 29:52even rethink the direction I want my hobby to go in the
- 29:57future because of pricing. So there's some fatigue of that.
- 30:01A card I really want is the 41 play ball Joe DiMaggio.
- 30:06And the regret is I could have bought that card, let's say PSA
- 30:12three. I could have bought that a few
- 30:14years ago, just a few years ago, not even that long ago for 1000
- 30:20bucks, 1200 bucks. Now that card in the three is
- 30:232500 to 3000, right? And it's like, yeah, you know,
- 30:32So it's there's some fatigue to that too.
- 30:37As much as everybody wants cards to go up in perpetuity.
- 30:40I'm more of the, hey, can it can it go back down a little bit?
- 30:44Because I'm still a collector accumulator.
- 30:47I'd rather pay less. I don't want to.
- 30:51I would like my collection to stay high and all the cards I
- 30:54don't have go down. That sounds like people as a
- 31:01financial planner, you know, all my clients, they only want it to
- 31:03go up on the but they never want it to go down right.
- 31:07And I'm like, well, it doesn't work that way.
- 31:10And or they're like, Hey, I only want it.
- 31:14I only want to be in the market when things are good and then
- 31:16when things are bad, Get Me Out of the market.
- 31:19I'm like, yeah, that that's how that works.
- 31:24They want me to be able to tell them when that is right and
- 31:29that's not in the job. I tried timing the market in
- 31:332020 and it ended very, very poorly for me.
- 31:37Right. Well, that's a good lesson.
- 31:41Don't do that. OK?
- 31:45I'm trying to think, is there any?
- 31:48I think we've covered a good range.
- 31:49I think a lot of people will be able to, you know, resonate with
- 31:54something that we said here on this video.
- 31:57Yeah, and I would love to hear other other people's thoughts on
- 31:59hobby fatigue. What fatigues you other than me
- 32:02and Mike, which obviously we're very fatiguing, but yeah, what
- 32:07topics, what events, what is it out there that is fatiguing to
- 32:12you? Even if we covered it, Love to
- 32:14hear it. Let us know in the comments.
- 32:16Any final thoughts, Mike? Thank you for having me.
- 32:20I'm I'm fatigued over this conversation.
- 32:22I'm going to go take a nap, but no this.
- 32:26Was good baseball collector on YouTube, the golden age of
- 32:32Cardboard podcast now on your channel.
- 32:36Yeah, everybody make sure you're subscribed.
- 32:39Thanks, Mike. Appreciate you coming on.
- 32:41You bet, my friend. We'll talk to you later.
