- 0:26Jennifer.
- 0:28Cam, it was a big weekend for you.
- 0:29The Seahawks are going to the Super Bowl.
- 0:31I know, can you believe this?
- 0:33My hawks are going to the Super Bowl.
- 0:35I know, you're very excited.
- 0:36Oh, I haven't been this excited since the last time they went to the Super Bowl. 2014, is that right?
- 0:41Yeah, but you know what?
- 0:42So they went and they won, and then they went the next year and they lost.
- 0:46So this is the makeup year.
- 0:48They're back, this is incredible.
- 0:50We talked about, it's hard to find a jersey right now.
- 0:52I know, I can't, I need, cause I have, I do have a Seahawks jersey, but it's a Russell Wilson jersey, and I can't wear that.
- 0:58So yeah, I'm trying to find my jersey.
- 1:00So if anybody knows where I can get a jersey, feel free to, that's right, go to coffeeinthepark.com and send me a note, cause I want my Seahawks jersey, because yeah, it's gonna be great.
- 1:11They're gonna win, they're just gonna win.
- 1:12It's gonna be awesome.
- 1:14So I'm so excited about that.

- 1:21And we are coming to you live from the Wall Coffee Roasters in the heart of beautiful downtown Acheson.
- 1:29That's right.
- 1:30So if you hear some noise in the background, coffee machines whirring, people talking, kids screaming, it is busy today.
- 1:37Yeah, it is.
- 1:38So if you hear that noise, it's cause we're in a live coffee shop. That's right.
- 1:41That's we're live, having coffee and tea and water.

- 3:48I'm very excited today because this is another one of my bucket list podcast guests.
- 3:56Okay, I have to tell our listeners that as we've been going along doing the podcast, Cam has had two guests that we've wanted.
- 4:05That's right.
- 4:06Number one, the Penguin at the mall. Which we did.
- 4:07Oh, the Penguin was amazing.
- 4:11We went to the Penguin at the mall.
- 4:13We had to go because the Penguin couldn't come to the coffee shop.
- 4:16So we went to the Penguin.
- 4:17That was pretty awesome.
- 4:19I loved it.
- 4:19The second one.
- 4:20Oh, this is one of the best.
- 4:22I've been dreaming of this.
- 4:24This is episode, what, 80? 87?
- 4:26I've been dreaming of this since episode two.
- 4:29But I have to say, the first time Cam tried to reach out, he was a little disappointed because he didn't hear.
- 4:35So he didn't think it was going to happen.
- 4:36No, I think I got in touch with the wrong person.
- 4:39But then I got in touch with our friend and past podcast guest, Tim Shipton.
- 4:46Thanks Ship. Thank you, Tim Shipton.
- 4:49Executive VP of the Oilers Entertainment Group.
- 4:54I hope he's the executive.
- 4:55I think he's the executive.
- 4:56Otherwise, I've just promoted him.
- 4:58And Dan Cote-Rosen, he's awesome too.
- 5:01And yeah, so Ship got us in touch with the right people.
- 5:04And I'm so excited to say today, bucket list guest number two is on the program.
- 5:10She is, so let's kick it off.
- 5:12Let's get going.
- 5:13So our guest today is Brooklyn Rasmussen, who is an arena technician, engineering and Ice Ops for OEG Sports and Entertainment.
- 5:22Whoa.
- 5:24Sports, sports and entertainment.
- 5:26Wow, I sound British. Yeah.
- 5:28Awesome, Brooklyn, welcome. Yeah, thank you so much for having me.
- 5:31So good to have, that's quite a title you have.
- 5:33Yeah, it's long.
- 5:33Is this, say that on your business card, because that's, that's like, that's huge.
- 5:38So it's just arena technician.
- 5:40Okay.
- 5:40But we say ice operations and engineering at Rogers Place because we take care of both the ice and the HVAC system.
- 5:48Oh, okay.
- 5:49So we'll two for one do both.
- 5:50Because without the HVAC system, you wouldn't have the ice.
- 5:52There's no ice.
- 5:53And without the ice, you wouldn't have, well, I guess you'd still have the HVAC system.
- 5:56But nonetheless, so that's a pretty impressive title.
- 5:59Thank you.
- 5:59It's cool, yeah.
- 6:01Ship, so I'm going to tell Ship, now you could be the Executive Vice President, because Brooklyn's title is way more impressive, I think.
- 6:08Pretty incredible.
- 6:09Cool.
- 6:10All right.
- 6:10So let's start it off.
- 6:11Okay, Brooklyn, tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 6:14Where were you born?
- 6:15Are you an Edmontonian or are you a transplant?
- 6:18So I'm a transplant.
- 6:20So I moved around a bit as a kid, actually.
- 6:24So I was originally born in Kelowna, BC.
- 6:26No! My daughter was born in Kelowna.
- 6:27Oh, cool.
- 6:28Yeah, yeah.
- 6:28Yeah.
- 6:29And then I lived there till I was about 10 or 11.
- 6:32Spent a year in Whitehorse out of all places.
- 6:35Wow, that's quite a, whoa, man. A little bit different, that's a bit of a change, eh?
- 6:38Yeah.
- 6:39And then I moved to Prince George, BC, so kind of right in the middle there.
- 6:43And then I did my high school and my college there, and then spent a couple of years in Fort St.
- 6:49James, which is just about an hour and a half northwest.
- 6:52Okay.
- 6:53So small town.
- 6:54Yeah, yeah.
- 6:55Back to Prince George for a year, and then I applied for the job here in Edmonton.
- 7:00And I got it. Really.
- 7:01So yeah, before I moved here, I hadn't really visited here, other than.
- 7:04So you never lived in Edmonton before?
- 7:06No, no, never even like had a long trip or anything.
- 7:09Yeah.
- 7:09So it was just kind of winging it.
- 7:10Yeah.
- 7:11Were you an Oilers fan?
- 7:14No.
- 7:16Thank you for being honest.
- 7:17Okay.
- 7:18Growing up in BC, I was a Canucks fan. Ah cheering for the Canucks.
- 7:23But now of course I do cheer for the Oilers.
- 7:26Yeah, for sure.
- 7:26I do root for them.
- 7:27Wow.
- 7:28So you moved around.
- 7:29I have a question. Yeah.
- 7:31Whitehorse. Whitehorse What was your family doing going to Whitehorse?
- 7:34So both of my parents work for Canada Post.
- 7:38So they deliver mail.
- 7:39Yeah.
- 7:40So they can transfer anywhere in Canada with that.
- 7:43And then it was just kind of that came up as a place to move.
- 7:46And so we did that. Really.
- 7:47So they wanted to transfer from Kelowna to Whitehorse.
- 7:50To Whitehorse.
- 7:50Yeah.
- 7:51From two days of winter to six months of winter.
- 7:55Yeah.
- 7:56But wait, but Whitehorse would be a cool place to live.
- 7:58Oh yeah.
- 7:58I loved it.
- 7:59Especially like at that age, like it was that year we actually had, I believe it was Hockey Day in Canada.
- 8:06Oh yeah, yeah.
- 8:06And so we had all of them out.
- 8:08So I saw the Cup at that point and things like that.
- 8:11And I was into speed skating and things.
- 8:13So let me ask you a question, Whitehorse.
- 8:15So were you into all the Whitehorse stuff, like dog sledding and hunting and fishing and like living in the wilderness and that kind of stuff?
- 8:25Not really.
- 8:27We did see the dog sled races, which was really cool.
- 8:30Each year they have a huge one.
- 8:31I forget the name of it right now, but it's very popular.
- 8:35So we got to see that.
- 8:37And as a kid, like never seeing that before, growing up in Kelowna, so that was amazing.
- 8:42Yeah, White Horse is a pretty cool place, close to Alaska.
- 8:45Did you ever go to Alaska?
- 8:46I did.
- 8:46Yeah.
- 8:47Yeah.
- 8:47We went on a couple trips, like just kind of shorter day trips.
- 8:50And then my dad and I went camping there.
- 8:53And so that was super fun.
- 8:54That's cool.
- 8:55I think anybody who can say they've been to Alaska is pretty cool.
- 8:58I've been to Alaska for an hour. An hour?
- 9:01Yeah.
- 9:01And then I was out.
- 9:02I was at Atlin Lake.
- 9:03Do you know where Atlin?
- 9:04Yeah.
- 9:04At Atlin Lake.
- 9:05And then we drove to Alaska, went over the border, went to a gas station and got beef jerky and then drove back.
- 9:10So yeah.
- 9:11But I was there for like an hour.
- 9:12That's pretty cool.
- 9:13I could say I've been to Alaska. That is.
- 9:14Yeah.
- 9:15All right.
- 9:15So then you went back to BC.
- 9:18You said you went to school there.
- 9:20What did you go to school for?
- 9:22So after I finished high school, I took a year off.
- 9:24And then this is kind of on my journey to becoming a Zamboni driver.
- 9:29But I went and took my fourth class power engineering at the college there.
- 9:34So I'm actually a power engineer by trade.
- 9:37Come on.
- 9:38Yeah.
- 9:38Okay.
- 9:39Now I have a question.
- 9:40Yeah.
- 9:40Because you hear power engineering.
- 9:42I know.
- 9:44What is that?
- 9:44What is that?
- 9:45Tell us what it means to be a power engineer.
- 9:47That's pretty cool.
- 9:48So it's not really what it sounds like.
- 9:51So as a fourth class, so the lowest level is fifth class and the top is first.
- 9:56Right.
- 9:56So you come in at fourth, you're kind of near the bottom.
- 9:59So it's basically boiler operation.
- 10:01So I was working when I worked, lived in Fort St.
- 10:04James.
- 10:05I was working at a power plant there.
- 10:07So we had a contract through BC Hydro to create clean energy.
- 10:12So yeah, it was like power engineering is basically boiler operation.
- 10:15Okay.
- 10:15I don't know much about this position, but I'm just going to ask and you can both of you actually can go at me.
- 10:21But is there a lot of women in this role?
- 10:24Is it or is it male dominated?
- 10:27Is it?
- 10:27Yeah.
- 10:29Like most trades, it is male dominated.
- 10:31I think in my power engineering class, there was about 16 or 18 of us and two of us were women.
- 10:39Yeah.
- 10:40Then that was pretty unseen before too.
- 10:42Wow.
- 10:44So why power?
- 10:48Why?
- 10:49Yeah.
- 10:51What was? Did you just wake up one day and go, I want to be a power engineer?
- 10:54Kinda.
- 10:55So you do those tests in high school about what should I do for my career and everything.
- 11:01So in high school, I took mechanics classes.
- 11:06Took mechanics classes and I was really into the trades.
- 11:09I thought I wanted to become a welder for a bit.
- 11:12Okay.
- 11:12Yeah.
- 11:13But I was interested in schooling and things like that.
- 11:16So when I saw power engineering, I was like, well, I could kind of have the best of both worlds where I can move up and do schooling and get to that higher level, but I can also be working with my hands.
- 11:25That's so cool.
- 11:26And you know what, when she says about that career test, I don't remember what mine was.
- 11:29Did you take that test?
- 11:30Probably, but I don't remember.
- 11:31Really?
- 11:31Yeah.
- 11:32Did you?
- 11:33Yeah.
- 11:34But mine was way off.
- 11:36Mine said I would be a good park ranger.
- 11:39And I don't even, I know, I don't even like, I don't like camping or none of that.
- 11:43I'm like park ranger?
- 11:45I know it was way off.
- 11:46Like, anyway, so I don't have a lot of faith in those, but it worked for you.
- 11:50That was pretty cool.
- 11:50Yeah.
- 11:51Well, it didn't say Zamboni driver on there.
- 11:53Okay.
- 11:53Yeah.
- 11:54It was almost there.
- 11:55But like, okay.
- 11:56So, well, that's amazing, actually.
- 11:58I know.
- 11:59So you're working in BC.
- 12:00Yeah.
- 12:01You're working at the power plant.
- 12:02Yep.
- 12:05Tell us about the journey to Edmonton.
- 12:07Somewhere you've never been.
- 12:08Yeah.
- 12:08Yeah.
- 12:08You've never been. In your entire life.
- 12:09Yeah.
- 12:10Yeah.
- 12:10And why Edmonton?
- 12:12I know.
- 12:13Oh, really?
- 12:13Just like, yeah.
- 12:14What was it?
- 12:15Was it the job that caught your eye or the city that caught your eye?
- 12:18So after I worked in the power plant, I did move back to Prince George.
- 12:22And then I actually worked in the local arenas there for a year.
- 12:26Oh, that's right.
- 12:28Yeah.
- 12:29Right.
- 12:29Okay.
- 12:30I was driving a Zamboni and getting into that.
- 12:33Prince George has a, they have a...
- 12:36Is it in a WHL team?
- 12:38The Prince George...
- 12:39Cougars.
- 12:39Cougars, that's right.
- 12:41Yeah.
- 12:41Yeah.
- 12:41Yeah.
- 12:41So we have that.
- 12:42And then we actually have a BCHL team there too, Spruce Kings.
- 12:47So yeah, I was working in the rinks there.
- 12:49I actually had been to Edmonton once for a hockey tournament.
- 12:51Okay.
- 12:52And then that was about it.
- 12:53Yeah.
- 12:53I think I went to the airport here at one point too.
- 12:56Okay.
- 12:57So in that...
- 12:58Did you go when you came for the hockey tournament, did you go to the mall?
- 13:01No.
- 13:01No.
- 13:02But we actually went to Rexall in its last year.
- 13:05Oh, yeah.
- 13:06The old Rexall.
- 13:07Still there.
- 13:08Yeah.
- 13:08Still there.
- 13:09But yeah.
- 13:09No.
- 13:10Okay.
- 13:10Wow.
- 13:11Yeah.
- 13:11That's pretty incredible.
- 13:13I mean, yeah.
- 13:13So that you're already beginning to answer some of my many questions about a Zamboni driver.
- 13:19So you didn't apply to be a Zamboni driver.
- 13:23I did.
- 13:24So working in the ranks in Prince George, so that was what I knew I was going to be doing.
- 13:29And I had done that because I was kind of looking for a change as to what like the power engineering thing and different things like that.
- 13:38So I applied knowing I'd be a Zamboni driver.
- 13:40And having played hockey growing up, I was like, I've been around the rinks.
- 13:44It had sounded cool.
- 13:45So how did that work out in Prince George?
- 13:47They just needed a Zamboni driver and you were there?
- 13:50Or right place, right time?
- 13:52Kind of.
- 13:53So all the rinks in Prince George are ran by the city of Prince George.
- 13:58Yeah.
- 13:58So you apply to the city like as they call them, I believe it's facility operator was my official title.
- 14:05So you are like you're running the rinks, but you're also taking care of the facility and things like that.
- 14:09And part of that's driving the Zamboni.
- 14:11Yeah.
- 14:12And then so what got me into it too was in BC, you need a ticket to maintain the refrigeration plan and to do checks on it.
- 14:22So working in a rank, they want you to have some sort of refrigeration ticket, which actually my fourth class power engineering covers.
- 14:29Okay.
- 14:29So it worked out with that.
- 14:31Oh, okay.
- 14:33I was going to ask her, is it a special, is it your class five driver's license?
- 14:36Yeah, I was going to ask her, do you need, that's a good question.
- 14:40No, that's a good question.
- 14:41Do you need a ticket to drive the Zamboni?
- 14:44In BC, you need your class five.
- 14:45Come on.
- 14:46Yeah.
- 14:47Really?
- 14:47In Alberta, there's different rules around it.
- 14:50So I don't think you need your class five.
- 14:52Yeah.
- 14:52Wow.
- 14:53Okay.
- 14:53So you're in Prince George, you're taking care of a ice rink or ice rinks.
- 14:58And there's the Zamboni.
- 14:59And one day they come to you and they say, Brooklyn, we need you on the Zamboni.
- 15:04Yeah.
- 15:04Did you practice?
- 15:06Did you have the opportunity? Did you shadow, what happened?
- 15:08That's right.
- 15:09Did you sit next to someone as they did it?
- 15:12Because we'll talk about this.
- 15:14There's an art to this.
- 15:15Yeah.
- 15:17So when I got hired, they knew I was going to be taking care of it.
- 15:20So the facility I worked in actually had three sheets of ice.
- 15:23Oh, wow.
- 15:23So they told me it's going to be a lot of flights.
- 15:26You're going to be driving the Zamboni a lot.
- 15:27Wow.
- 15:28So yeah, you start out by just like watching and getting the pattern down.
- 15:31So you go from one rink to the next rink to the next rink on the Zamboni.
- 15:36They have different Zambonis.
- 15:37So you're walking a lot.
- 15:38Each ice rink had their own Zamboni?
- 15:41Yeah.
- 15:41So you got to...
- 15:43This is too much.
- 15:44This is unbelievable.
- 15:45So did you get to practice or was it just go do it?
- 15:51A little bit of both.
- 15:52So it was like the training and it worked out well, like this kind of training doesn't work for everyone.
- 15:58But it was like, you get the idea of it watching someone and then you just, you kind of have to just drive and then you incorporate different steps of the Zamboni as you learn.
- 16:08So at first, you're just driving.
- 16:10Then you're putting the conditioner down, but you're not using the blade.
- 16:13And then you're just using the water and then you incorporate the blade.
- 16:18See, now I'm glad you're explaining this because there's more to this than just getting on the Zamboni and driving around the rink.
- 16:26So you're learning to do this, you're doing it, and you have to know all these steps.
- 16:31I'm just straight up, I'm gonna be honest, the part that would get me is, I would get confused on the pattern.
- 16:37How did, cause there's a pattern to it, right?
- 16:39And I'd mess it up.
- 16:40I guarantee I would mess it up right away.
- 16:42Yeah, it's when you're watching it, and then when you first go to do it, I found it very confusing and most people do.
- 16:48Cause it doesn't really, like it kind of makes sense, but until you actually do it.
- 16:53But yeah, once you get into it, then it comes easily.
- 16:57Okay, so walk us through the steps again.
- 17:00Okay, you get on the Zamboni and you go out to the ice on the Zamboni.
- 17:07Walk us through the steps.
- 17:08Okay, so I can kind of, yeah, regular flood.
- 17:12So you drive out, get onto the ice.
- 17:15First thing you're doing is you're revving up the engine.
- 17:18So to make sure you have the full amount of power that you need.
- 17:21In the Zamboni.
- 17:22Yeah, in the Zamboni.
- 17:24And then, so what you're doing is you're dropping the conditioner.
- 17:27So the conditioner is the back part of the Zamboni, so it actually moves up and down.
- 17:32And what is the conditioner, is it?
- 17:34So that's kind of, that's like the whole, the cleaning, the cutting, so that does it all.
- 17:40So the conditioner is basically what re-does the ice.
- 17:44Oh, okay.
- 17:45So you're taking off, are you taking off a thin layer of ice and replacing it is what you're doing?
- 17:49Yeah.
- 17:49Yeah.
- 17:50So as you, when you have the conditioner down, you have a very long blade underneath.
- 17:54Right, right.
- 17:55So one thing I tell our ice student kids is that the blade is the same height as Mattias Ekholm.
- 18:00If you want a little fun fact.
- 18:03Yeah.
- 18:03Who scored by the way, three goals last night, got a hat trick. Three goals last night, yeah.
- 18:06First NHL, his first NHL hat trick last night.
- 18:10There was a lot of hats on the ice.
- 18:11Oh yeah.
- 18:12It went crazy last night.
- 18:13I was going crazy.
- 18:14I love Mattias.
- 18:14That's a tall blade.
- 18:16Mattias, they call him the viking.
- 18:19He is huge.
- 18:20He is a big guy.
- 18:21Yeah.
- 18:21I don't think you realize that sitting up in the stands, how big that actually is.
- 18:25No.
- 18:26That would be intimidating for a little guy like me.
- 18:28That's for sure.
- 18:29That's crazy.
- 18:30Yeah.
- 18:30When I pick it up, I'm not very tall.
- 18:33So it's towering above me for sure.
- 18:36But yeah, so that is connected underneath.
- 18:39There is a wheel.
- 18:40If you're watching any Zamboni driver, you'll see them turning a wheel a lot.
- 18:45So that is adjusting the pitch of the blade.
- 18:48Yeah.
- 18:48So if you're angling it more into the ice, then you're cutting more.
- 18:52And if you lift it up, so you're angling it less into the ice, then you're cutting less.
- 18:57Okay.
- 18:58This has answered years of questions because I always wonder why are they spinning the wheel?
- 19:03Why he's driving or she's driving and they're spinning the wheel.
- 19:06Like, first of all, that takes a lot of coordination.
- 19:09Yeah.
- 19:09Because you can't drive the Zamboni into the boards.
- 19:12No, I could not do it.
- 19:17Cam could not do that.
- 19:18It would go into the boards, guaranteed.
- 19:20Okay.
- 19:21So you're driving, you're spinning the wheel, you're adjusting the blade, you're adjusting the conditioner, all that kind of stuff.
- 19:26Yeah.
- 19:26All right.
- 19:27That's the first trip.
- 19:28Yeah.
- 19:29So on top of that, this is all happening at the same time.
- 19:32So you also are putting down a layer of water.
- 19:34Right.
- 19:35Hot water?
- 19:36Hot water.
- 19:36Yes.
- 19:37That's being heated in the Zamboni.
- 19:39No.
- 19:39So it's heated prior and then we fill up the Zamboni.
- 19:42Oh, okay.
- 19:43Yeah.
- 19:43It depends on the rink.
- 19:45Obviously, being an NHL facility, we have quite the extensive water treatment program and things like that.
- 19:51Was that in Prince George?
- 19:52Yeah.
- 19:53We had a water heater.
- 19:55It was hot water.
- 19:57And that works just as fine.
- 19:59Right.
- 20:00But yeah.
- 20:00So you're putting down hot water.
- 20:02You can control it.
- 20:04Our Zambonis are a bit more technical.
- 20:06So we have a system called the Fast Ice System.
- 20:08So on a regular Zamboni, you would have a towel behind and then it flattens out the water.
- 20:14Okay.
- 20:15So with the Fast Ice, it's a new big thing.
- 20:19So it actually, it's like a mist that comes out.
- 20:22So it has a bunch of spray nozzles.
- 20:24So it actually, it freezes faster and then you can put down more water because of that.
- 20:30So a lot of NHL ranks are using it now.
- 20:33So it just, it creates a nicer ice surface that can freeze quicker.
- 20:38See, this is very important because you have to have good ice.
- 20:41Yeah.
- 20:42You have to, like you can't, it can't have divots or a little, it's got to be good ice.
- 20:47So okay, so you're in Prince George, you're doing this three sheets of ice.
- 20:50You're doing a lot of Zamboni driving, getting Zamboni hours, I guess, under your belt.
- 20:56Yeah.
- 20:57Well, it's like flying, it is hours. It's like flying, Zamboni hours.
- 21:03And then one day you see an ad to be the Zamboni driver in Edmonton.
- 21:07Yes.
- 21:08That's actually exactly how it went.
- 21:10So technically, like a hockey player, you started in the minors.
- 21:15Yes.
- 21:16Yeah.
- 21:16This was one of your questions.
- 21:17This was, you started in the minors.
- 21:19Yep.
- 21:20See, now did you ever, cause when I was a kid in Edmonton playing hockey in the winter, we didn't have a Zamboni on the outdoor rink, but we had a shovel, a big shovel we had to use to shovel the ice.
- 21:31That would have been my starting point.
- 21:33Did you ever do that?
- 21:34I did that on the outdoor rink, like not as a job, but yeah.
- 21:39Using the shovel.
- 21:40Okay, so that really was your starting point.
- 21:43Yeah.
- 21:43Then you went up to the minors, to the Prince George Cougars people.
- 21:50And even that, when I was in Prince George, I didn't drive for the Cougars.
- 21:53So I was lucky enough, I had a really good crew there.
- 21:57And so when I got the job and gave my two weeks notice or whatever it was, they actually let me drive a couple WHL games to kind of get used to it.
- 22:06And then, yeah, on my last game, because I knew one of the broadcasting guys that worked for the Cougars, they gave me a special shout out.
- 22:14But one of the things they said during my flood was, oh, she got called up to the big leagues.
- 22:18So that was quite funny.
- 22:19This is like being in the minors and getting called up to the big leagues.
- 22:24This is so, it's like getting drafted.
- 22:25It's like, that's incredible.
- 22:27Okay, so I have a question about the interview process.
- 22:29Yeah.
- 22:30You're coming up to the big leagues.
- 22:31Yeah.
- 22:32You're obviously, you're interviewing.
- 22:34Is part of the interview on the Zamboni?
- 22:37Yeah.
- 22:37See, like, no.
- 22:38Do they do tests?
- 22:39No.
- 22:39No.
- 22:40No, not at all.
- 22:41Really?
- 22:41Yeah.
- 22:42So they took my word for it.
- 22:44Yeah.
- 22:44Wow.
- 22:45And they're like, oh, that sounds good.
- 22:46That's it?
- 22:47Yeah.
- 22:47And you're good.
- 22:48Yeah.
- 22:48And there's actually, so a part of what's cool about Rogers Place and like my position, so since we have power engineers that are working there.
- 22:57So some of the guys that came in actually like didn't drive Zamboni.
- 23:00So we like would teach them after the fact.
- 23:03So since we cover both sides of things, we can't always get someone that has both HVAC experience and the Zamboni experience.
- 23:11So and that kind of works out nice because you can teach them exactly how you want them to drive the Zamboni.
- 23:16And where do those guys come from?
- 23:19I think there was a couple guys like in building operations before.
- 23:23So it's not like I could come and apply to be a Zamboni driver.
- 23:26You could.
- 23:26You can do anything.
- 23:28I don't think they'd hire me.
- 23:29I don't.
- 23:29I don't think they'd.
- 23:31I don't know.
- 23:32Did they look at your driving abstract?
- 23:34Because that might have something to do with it.
- 23:35I think they did ask for that.
- 23:37Yeah.
- 23:38Okay.
- 23:38So now this is pretty cool.
- 23:40So you arrive for the or you do the interview.
- 23:43Yeah.
- 23:43And was there a lot of people applying for the job?
- 23:46There was a few.
- 23:47Yeah.
- 23:47So you got picked.
- 23:48Yeah.
- 23:49And then so I got picked because I had like both sides.
- 23:52So I had the power engineering and the Zamboni experience.
- 23:54You're multi-talented.
- 23:55Thank you.
- 23:56Yeah.
- 23:57So I didn't like I didn't think like we would sit at work like in Prince George and be like, Oh, like, what would it take to get to the NHL sort of thing?
- 24:04That'd be me, I'd be sitting around the lunchroom.
- 24:08So like, you think they're going to call you up? Like that would be, that'd be me.
- 24:11Yeah.
- 24:12Wow.
- 24:13Yeah.
- 24:13Okay.
- 24:14So you come, you interview, you go, did you go back home?
- 24:17You went back to Prince George, waiting for the phone to ring, waiting for the phone to ring.
- 24:22And then the phone rings.
- 24:23And then it's like, you got the job.
- 24:25Yeah.
- 24:25How excited were you?
- 24:27It was very exciting.
- 24:28So I actually didn't come out here for the interview.
- 24:30I did it over Zoom.
- 24:31Zoom.
- 24:32So that's why she didn't drive the Zamboni.
- 24:36They're like, on Zoom.
- 24:37Okay.
- 24:37Can you just drive around the rink there?
- 24:40Okay.
- 24:40Yeah.
- 24:40But it was, it was crazy because you get a first phone call.
- 24:44That's kind of like just to get an idea of who you are before you do the actual interview.
- 24:49So even that was like, that was like, I'm not going to get this, like obviously.
- 24:54And then the interview kind of- You really thought?
- 24:56Oh, yeah.
- 24:56Yeah.
- 24:57I didn't think I was going to get it.
- 24:58No.
- 24:58And then the interview came, and I was like, it actually went well.
- 25:03And I was like, I could answer the questions they had for me.
- 25:05I think it was well.
- 25:07And then the phone call came where they said, yep, we want you to work at Rogers Place.
- 25:11And then I had to quickly decide if I was going to move to Edmonton.
- 25:16Edmonton, yeah.
- 25:17So that was a big decision, but I'm glad I did it.
- 25:19Yeah.
- 25:20So what year did all of this happen for you?
- 25:22This was in 2022.
- 25:25So I started in December 22 with Rogers.
- 25:29Right.
- 25:31Did you jump up and down when they offered you the job?
- 25:34Were you like on draft day? A bit, yeah.
- 25:36Like the players got all excited?
- 25:38Hugged your parents and all that kind of stuff?
- 25:39Yeah, I was wearing a suit, too, so it was, yeah.
- 25:41I was wearing a suit.
- 25:44That's great.
- 25:45I love it.
- 25:46Wow, that's incredible.
- 25:47I know.
- 25:48Yeah.
- 25:48So tell us then about your first NHL game.
- 25:52Yeah.
- 25:53That you drove the Zamboni.
- 25:55How were your nerves?
- 25:56Did you get to practice?
- 25:57Yeah, so we actually have a little way that you can practice.
- 26:01So luckily we have a WHL team at Rogers.
- 26:03That's right.
- 26:03So you work your way up.
- 26:05Yeah, so you start with Oil Kings.
- 26:07And then just to make sure, it's not so much if you can drive the Zamboni, obviously they're confident in you as a Zamboni operator before that, but it's more the nerves of having the people there and watching you.
- 26:20So you start with the Oil Kings, do that a few times, make sure you're looking good, and then you move up to the Oilers.
- 26:28So that was a big jump, obviously.
- 26:31So now you're in the big leagues.
- 26:32Yeah.
- 26:33And I think what most people don't realize is the ice, especially in an NHL rink, it's big, like it's a big thing.
- 26:42And the players will tell you if they don't like the ice in certain arenas, they'll tell you if they do like the ice.
- 26:48So it's not, and I'm not saying it wasn't that way in Prince George, but now it's a whole different level.
- 26:54Yeah.
- 26:54And did you feel the pressure of that and the weight of that?
- 26:57Yeah.
- 26:58Yeah, it was definitely, especially because coming in, so Edmonton on the players' poll is number two in ice quality.
- 27:05So we are known for having good ice and having to live up to that expectation.
- 27:10Like you want to do your best and provide the best that you can.
- 27:14So yeah, that was a thought in my head.
- 27:17And of course, there's cameras everywhere.
- 27:19That was something I wasn't used to.
- 27:21Yeah.
- 27:21And you're maybe even on national TV, because sometimes they're showing the rink in between periods and stuff.
- 27:28And so according to Tim Shipton, telling me last night, Ship, if you're fact checking, because you said you were going to, he said that we are ice and our ice crew, and you have a main ice guy that is considered the best, one of the best in the league, if not the world.
- 27:46We have some of the best ice in the world.
- 27:48Yes.
- 27:49Yeah.
- 27:50Which is an art.
- 27:51Yeah.
- 27:51So that's actually our Director of Ice Operations, who is actually heading over to Italy right now.
- 27:57That's right.
- 27:57Yes.
- 27:58Going to the Olympics.
- 27:59Yeah.
- 28:00So he actually also does speed skating ice.
- 28:02So he does the long track.
- 28:05So yeah, he's...
- 28:06You can shout out his name.
- 28:07Oh, Matt Messer is his name.
- 28:08Okay.
- 28:09Awesome.
- 28:09Yeah.
- 28:11I heard he was going to Italy.
- 28:12Yeah.
- 28:12So he's on his way there.
- 28:14I think he's there by now.
- 28:15But yeah.
- 28:16So he'll be doing that.
- 28:17And yeah, he's definitely known in the NHL world for ice and really any of the ice world.
- 28:24Like people know his name and...
- 28:26Wow.
- 28:26Yeah.
- 28:27It's cool to work for and to learn from and...
- 28:30Yeah.
- 28:30So it's definitely a skill.
- 28:32Yes.
- 28:32And an art.
- 28:33Yeah.
- 28:33I'm going to say an art because it's an art.
- 28:35I have another question.
- 28:36Yeah.
- 28:36Okay.
- 28:37So you have...
- 28:41I'm sure the Zamboni goes a certain speed.
- 28:44Yeah.
- 28:44Yes.
- 28:45No, it's a good question.
- 28:47Yeah. What is the top speed of the Zamboni?
- 28:48So it's nine miles per hour.
- 28:50Really?
- 28:51Yeah.
- 28:51So in an app...
- 28:52Top speed.
- 28:53Top speed.
- 28:55Can't go past nine.
- 28:56So...
- 28:56There's a governor on it.
- 28:58Yeah.
- 28:58It is governed.
- 28:59Yeah.
- 28:59Yeah.
- 28:59Yeah.
- 29:00Yeah.
- 29:00So in an NHL flood, like during a game, when there's two Zambonis out there, we are going five miles per hour, just over five.
- 29:08So yeah, we're not going that all out speed.
- 29:11So we are trying to go like slower than that all out speed, but yeah.
- 29:16Wow.
- 29:17I mean, that's, and yeah, you get in trouble if you go over five, like they have the gun on you, like, okay, you're out, you get a ticket.
- 29:26No.
- 29:27Like, I'm sure, yeah, I don't think they want us driving that nine miles per hour.
- 29:30I don't think I've really gotten it up to that speed, but...
- 29:33Now, can I ask a question?
- 29:34So in Prince George, it was one Zamboni on the ice?
- 29:40Um, so for every flood, it would be one, except for the WHL games, they had two.
- 29:45Yeah.
- 29:45So you come here and they have two now.
- 29:47There's always two.
- 29:49It's actually the same, so it's just one, except for games, we do two.
- 29:53Right.
- 29:53So on a regular day to day, you'll be doing just one Zamboni.
- 29:57You'll be by yourself.
- 29:58Okay.
- 29:59That leads me...
- 30:00Yeah.
- 30:00Probably for a TV and everything else, they probably have a timeline where it has to be...
- 30:04Yeah.
- 30:04How long do you have to do the ice?
- 30:0618 minutes.
- 30:0718 minutes.
- 30:08In the intermission.
- 30:09Well, okay.
- 30:10So can I just say...
- 30:11Because at the games, they have all these little half time...
- 30:14Or not half time.
- 30:15They have all these little between period things going on.
- 30:17You know, the little kids skating out there, the games they play.
- 30:20Yeah.
- 30:21How long is...
- 30:22Does that give you time?
- 30:24Yeah.
- 30:24So I believe they have four minutes.
- 30:27So it seems like longer when you're there.
- 30:29Yeah.
- 30:29So I was gonna say, yeah.
- 30:30But yeah.
- 30:31So once we start, our flood actually only takes five minutes with two machines.
- 30:35If everything goes perfectly, it's five minutes.
- 30:38We have it pretty dialed in.
- 30:40So yeah.
- 30:41Once the five minutes is over, then they have time to let the ice freeze.
- 30:45They do some patching.
- 30:46They put the nets on.
- 30:48So yeah.
- 30:49We're in that timeframe for sure.
- 30:51Now, I have another...
- 30:54This is what we heard.
- 30:55So correct us if we are incorrect.
- 30:59We heard that you were the first female Zamboni driver in the NHL.
- 31:04No, not the NHL.
- 31:06So I'm the first one for the Oilers.
- 31:08Okay.
- 31:09Yeah.
- 31:10So, and then there is, as of right...
- 31:13So when I say this, like there's not like a directory of Zamboni drivers in the NHL or anything, so...
- 31:21Yeah.
- 31:21Chicago, LA, John Smith.
- 31:24Yeah.
- 31:25So there is only, I think, about five of us right now in the NHL.
- 31:30So I'm the only full time for the Oilers.
- 31:32Okay.
- 31:34I'm the only woman that's done an Oilers game at home.
- 31:36Ever.
- 31:37Ever.
- 31:38That I know of.
- 31:39I think, no, I think true.
- 31:41Yeah, I think ever.
- 31:42Yeah, I agree.
- 31:43And then, so there's a few, there's one woman in Calgary, actually.
- 31:47Tampa Bay has one.
- 31:50There's one for the Islanders.
- 31:53So yeah, we're around.
- 31:54Do y'all ever like get together or like, do you like, do you call each other, do you have like a little Zamboni Women's Conference or anything?
- 32:02No.
- 32:02Fly into Vegas, have a little, you know, like.
- 32:05Oh, I wish.
- 32:06Yeah, I wish.
- 32:09Yeah, I have a couple of them on LinkedIn, you know, just to keep fresh, professional.
- 32:13Sure.
- 32:14Because I am one of the newer ones too.
- 32:16But yeah, I would love to have like a little, you know, even a group chat with them.
- 32:20Sure.
- 32:20That would be great.
- 32:20That would be really cool.
- 32:22Compare notes.
- 32:23If you're a Zamboni driver, you're listening to this right now.
- 32:26Female Zamboni driver.
- 32:26Call Brooklyn.
- 32:27Yeah, call Brooklyn.
- 32:28Find her on LinkedIn.
- 32:30Yeah, find her on the LinkedIn.
- 32:31That's right.
- 32:32Get her on the LinkedIn.
- 32:34And then maybe get her on the FaceTime or something.
- 32:37And you guys can have a conversation.
- 32:38That's pretty cool, though.
- 32:40That's really cool.
- 32:41Yeah.
- 32:41How many, there's how many teams in the league?
- 32:43There's 20.
- 32:4432.
- 32:4532 league teams?
- 32:46So five of you out of 32.
- 32:49Yeah.
- 32:49That's pretty cool, I think.
- 32:50Thank you.
- 32:51That's that.
- 32:51I mean, yeah, you should be proud.
- 32:53That's really awesome.
- 32:55And so yeah, so you made it from the min- while you made it from the little league, the little rink, outdoor rink all the way up to the NHL.
- 33:03And obviously, again, do you ever, do the players ever, I don't know if I can ask this in Edmonton, do they ever complain?
- 33:11Do they ever like the ice was a little chippy or there was a divot or did they ever like, do you hear about it?
- 33:19Like do they come to you guys and say, okay, we got to work on this?
- 33:22They don't come to me specifically, just in case.
- 33:27But yeah, there have been days where, so actually like each NHL game, the ice gets rated.
- 33:33So that's done by the refs.
- 33:35Who does that?
- 33:36The refs.
- 33:37Yeah! Really? So they rate the ice quality, they rate just the building quality, things like that.
- 33:42So we actually get a rating every game.
- 33:44Really?
- 33:45It's like Google review every game.
- 33:47Yes.
- 33:47Marty and Marilyn's son would do that.
- 33:50One of our guests.
- 33:51Yeah, their son is a senior NHL referee. Oh, nice.
- 33:54So really, they rate it.
- 33:56Is that right?
- 33:57And then you get the report.
- 33:59Yeah, so it will actually go to my boss, Matt Messer, and then so we get feedback on it.
- 34:06So we obviously like if we know it's not the best ice for the game or like something is happening like you know during the Stanley Cup Finals, it was very warm outside.
- 34:16I was going to say, yes.
- 34:17So what changes the dynamics of the ice?
- 34:21Yeah, so a big thing is like the temperature of the building.
- 34:24Humidity is a big one and the dew point of the air.
- 34:28So when it's too humid outside, it'll actually affect the ice.
- 34:32So last year like during the playoffs like keeping it cold.
- 34:36Because we're going to June.
- 34:37Yeah, we're and we're not like, the building wasn't designed for it.
- 34:40Could you imagine being in like Florida or LA or some?
- 34:44That's got to be tough.
- 34:45So actually Florida had better ice than us.
- 34:48Really?
- 34:48During the playoffs.
- 34:49So they because it's warm there all the time, they can design their building to that temperature.
- 34:55So is Rogers Arena an airlock, airlock building?
- 34:57Is it like pretty se-?
- 34:59It's pretty sealed, right?
- 35:00So we have air dampers that bring in outside air.
- 35:03Okay.
- 35:04But for sure, like if we know the air outside is too warm, we won't be using those so we can circulate inside air.
- 35:11So what I'm hearing here is there's a whole science to this.
- 35:14Yeah.
- 35:15This is not just you showing up on game night, jumping on the Zamboni, having a ring around a couple of times, and then going home.
- 35:22There's way more to this.
- 35:24See folks, this is why any of you who have been to games, I know you've sat there eating your popcorn, drinking your Pepsi, or Coke, whichever sponsors you.
- 35:32I think it's Pepsi at Rogers, and you're watching the Zambonis, and you're just in that mind frame of how do they, is that an easy job?
- 35:41Is that a hard job?
- 35:42Now you know, this is not an easy job.
- 35:44There's an art and a science to it.
- 35:47This is tough.
- 35:48I can see now why you have to come up through the minors, and you have to have a power engineering ticket.
- 35:53By the way, power engineering ticket sounds like a Power Ranger.
- 35:57I'm just saying like one of the superheroes.
- 35:59But anyways, don't you think?
- 36:00I think anyways, I think that's pretty cool.
- 36:02But so yeah, so this is not just, this is pretty cool.
- 36:05This is intense.
- 36:06Yeah.
- 36:07And so Brooklyn, tell us about the crew that you work with.
- 36:11It has to be a pretty substantial team.
- 36:14Yeah.
- 36:16Yeah.
- 36:17How many are in kind of your area?
- 36:20So for full-time arena technicians, that's what my title is.
- 36:24Like full-time job?
- 36:25Yeah.
- 36:26So at Rogers Place, there's seven of us.
- 36:28And then we have a manager and two directors.
- 36:31One will cover the ice side of things.
- 36:33One will cover the HVAC.
- 36:35And then for part timers, we have about ten or twelve.
- 36:39So a lot of that is coming in for games and filling in those roles.
- 36:41Just part-time guys.
- 36:42Yeah.
- 36:43They work at Baskin-Robbins ice cream.
- 36:48Yeah. Where is Baskin-Robbins?
- 36:48At the mall.
- 36:49I'm just saying, because then they feel cold.
- 36:50It's like it's ice.
- 36:51It's like ice cream.
- 36:52Anyway.
- 36:53Okay.
- 36:54Just saying.
- 36:55I know.
- 36:55I'm just saying though, they're part-time.
- 36:57They have to work somewhere.
- 36:58Okay.
- 36:58All right.
- 36:59Yeah.
- 36:59And then we have our ice crew as well.
- 37:02So there's about six of them right now.
- 37:05So they'll be on the ice patching, they'll be moving the nets and stuff.
- 37:10So and then for Oilers Games, we have the orange and blue ice crew that do the shovels and things like that.
- 37:16Those are all the people that come out real fast.
- 37:18Yeah, real fast.
- 37:19Is that a good thing?
- 37:20Like, is that okay for the Zamboni and stuff?
- 37:24They're out there fast.
- 37:25Yeah.
- 37:25So we, like on the TV timeouts, that's when they'll head out.
- 37:28That's when they're out there, yeah.
- 37:30And then it helps us, like it is mandatory by the NHL to have those breaks and to have the full shovel crew there.
- 37:37But when we do a flood, if there's too much snow, it doesn't allow us to cut the ice as properly.
- 37:43Oh yeah, okay.
- 37:43So they're getting rid of that.
- 37:44That's what they're doing.
- 37:45They're taking the, yeah.
- 37:46Because the skates will, they'll spray and there'll be snow and all that kind of stuff.
- 37:51Yeah.
- 37:51Yeah.
- 37:52Oh, this is, I'm telling you, I'm not even kidding you.
- 37:55This isn't, it's not quite, maybe the penguin, I don't know.
- 37:59This is unbelievable.
- 38:00I didn't know any of this.
- 38:01Did you?
- 38:02No.
- 38:02I didn't know none of this.
- 38:04Most people didn't.
- 38:04No.
- 38:06This is one of our best podcasts for information, I think.
- 38:10This is unbelievable.
- 38:10Brooklyn, you're amazing.
- 38:12Okay, now the game's over.
- 38:14They do the three stars, they come out.
- 38:16Hunter comes out and does his thing.
- 38:18Hunter was right in the suite next to us yesterday.
- 38:21And he was really loud.
- 38:22His drum.
- 38:23Anyway, that's a whole other show.
- 38:25That drum was like, I needed earplugs.
- 38:27Anyways, everybody goes home.
- 38:30Is your job done or do you guys have to?
- 38:33Nope.
- 38:33So a lot of times, especially this month, we're very busy this month.
- 38:37Yeah.
- 38:38So what we'll do, especially if we have the orange and blue ice crew and our ice crew is we'll get right to doing board signs.
- 38:45So we replace all the ads on the rink.
- 38:48Yeah.
- 38:49So we do that and then we measure the ice after every game, see where we're at.
- 38:54And then we get into doing the floods for the night and we kind of determine how the rest of our night's going to go from what the measurements are, what we know is the next day, so. Lot of planning.
- 39:03So it just doesn't end.
- 39:05There's work to do.
- 39:05Yeah.
- 39:06We on night shifts, we work till 2.30 in the morning.
- 39:08Come on.
- 39:09Yeah. 2.30! Yeah.
- 39:10So they're late.
- 39:12See, this is great.
- 39:14And what time do you get to come in the next day?
- 39:16Well, usually. 7am? No.
- 39:17So the morning shift will be.
- 39:19So if we're so when we're morning shift, we're 7 a.m.
- 39:22to 5 p.m.
- 39:24Night shift is 4: 30 p.m.
- 39:25to 2: 30 a.m.
- 39:27to 2: So we have that break.
- 39:28to 2: How many Zambonis do they have?
- 39:30to 2: So we have two for Rogers Place Ice.
- 39:34to 2: We have one for a downtown community arena.
- 39:37to 2: And then we also have one for our Plaza Ice outside.
- 39:40to 2: So we have four total.
- 39:41to 2: We have and we're in beautiful downtown Acheson.
- 39:45to 2: And in the suburbs over there, there's a Zamboni company.
- 39:49to 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:50to 2: They're out of Acheson.
- 39:52to 2: Yes, that's that.
- 39:53to 2: We drive by them.
- 39:54to 2: Yeah, they're right over there.
- 39:56to 2: I believe, yeah, they provide us with some products like Zamboni products and everything.
- 40:00to 2: So yeah, they're.
- 40:02to 2: Hey, look at that connection! Beautiful downtown Acheson.
- 40:05to 2: One of the suburbs is a Zamboni company.
- 40:08to 2: That's pretty cool.
- 40:08to 2: I have another question.
- 40:09to 2: Okay.
- 40:11to 2: So how difficult is it?
- 40:14to 2: Let's just say, and I know the schedule probably allows it to look different, but there's lots of things that happen in Rogers Place outside.
- 40:20to 2: Yeah.
- 40:21to 2: Outside of, you know, concerts and yeah, rodeo.
- 40:26to 2: Oh, yeah.
- 40:28to 2: Things like that. How do you, yeah.
- 40:29to 2: That dynamic, right?
- 40:30to 2: Are you in and out helping with those pieces too?
- 40:33to 2: Um, kind of, but not really.
- 40:35to 2: So we're fortunate at Rogers Place.
- 40:38to 2: So we have a team that does all the conversions for us.
- 40:41to 2: Um, so basically what we do is if we know, like say we have a game one night and we have a concert the next day.
- 40:48to 2: So after that game, we'll get the ice ready.
- 40:50to 2: We'll get it clean.
- 40:51to 2: We'll get the edges taken down so that all the flooring fits in properly.
- 40:55to 2: And then we basically hand it off to conversions.
- 40:58to 2: They cover the ice.
- 40:59to 2: So they put flooring right on top of the ice.
- 41:01to 2: Right on top.
- 41:02to 2: Yeah.
- 41:03to 2: And how is that for the ice?
- 41:05to 2: Like, is that?
- 41:05to 2: Oh, totally fine.
- 41:06to 2: Yeah.
- 41:07to 2: It's a few layers, so it will have like a barrier, so it keeps the cold inside.
- 41:13to 2: But it just keeps everything cold.
- 41:15to 2: Obviously, it's not perfect.
- 41:17to 2: Like, when you're cleaning up the ice, you'll have a beer that was spilt and things like that.
- 41:21to 2: But it is totally fine.
- 41:22to 2: The one that amazes me is the rodeo.
- 41:24to 2: When the rodeo, yeah, all the dirt, when it comes to town, that whole floor is just dirt, obviously.
- 41:30to 2: And it's not a thin layer, it's a thicker layer of dirt.
- 41:32to 2: For the animals, they can't have a really thin layer.
- 41:34to 2: Yeah.
- 41:35to 2: So for dirt shows, because we also do like Monster Jam and stuff.
- 41:38to 2: Right, Monster Jam.
- 41:39to 2: Yeah, so they have dirt.
- 41:40to 2: So we actually, so we put down our flooring that we use for concerts and then we have basically a giant tarp that they put down.
- 41:48to 2: Right.
- 41:48to 2: And then they do a third layer on top.
- 41:51to 2: And then so it's even more sealed than whatever would be for concerts.
- 41:55to 2: So when they take all that off, and the game's coming up, is the ice in good shape, bad shape, you guys got to work at it, get it back into...
- 42:04to 2: So it really depends.
- 42:06to 2: Some shows, they take the flooring off, and it just takes a scrape and a flood, and it's pretty much good to go.
- 42:12to 2: Other times, there's stuff that was spilled, there's dirt, there's whatever.
- 42:18to 2: So we can do a concert cleanup in between an hour to three hours.
- 42:24to 2: What? Yeah.
- 42:24to 2: So we're fast.
- 42:27to 2: Yeah.
- 42:27to 2: So if like, again, that's it's really depending on what the ice looks like, but we basically we do like a scrape.
- 42:35to 2: So that's basically just cutting off a layer of ice, right?
- 42:37to 2: Without putting anything down, right?
- 42:38to 2: And then we'll go in on the ice with backpack sprayers.
- 42:41to 2: So just with water and like helping all the debris and everything get out of the ice.
- 42:46to 2: So a lot of work. Then we do a flood.
- 42:47to 2: Oh yeah.
- 42:48to 2: Yeah.
- 42:48to 2: It's a lot of work.
- 42:51to 2: And who do you have a special crew that just paints the lines and the logos and everything on the ice?
- 42:59to 2: Are there guys that just do that or y'all do that?
- 43:02to 2: Yeah, that's us.
- 43:03to 2: Y'all do that.
- 43:04to 2: So yeah, we do that every year.
- 43:06to 2: Yeah, this year was on Labor Day.
- 43:08to 2: We did that.
- 43:08to 2: So yeah.
- 43:10to 2: Is there ever, no, I'm sorry, I have so many questions.
- 43:12to 2: No, this is good.
- 43:14to 2: Is there ever a time when the ice is completely out of the arena or is it a 24, like 365?
- 43:21to 2: Right.
- 43:22to 2: No, so we take it out for the summer.
- 43:25to 2: On our downtown community arena, it does stay in pretty much all year, just because there's like training camps, things like that, that goes on.
- 43:34to 2: But no, basically once the season's done, we'll take the ice out.
- 43:38to 2: That makes it easier for concerts and then less having to...
- 43:41to 2: So it's a cement floor?
- 43:43to 2: Yeah, cement floor.
- 43:44to 2: Yeah.
- 43:46to 2: Folks, I'm telling you, this is amazing.
- 43:49to 2: It just is blowing me away.
- 43:51to 2: I know.
- 43:51to 2: It really is.
- 43:52to 2: The things you learn on Coffee In The Park.
- 43:53to 2: No, I know, because you know what?
- 43:55to 2: We take it for granted.
- 43:56to 2: We go to the games, we enjoy the game, but it's professional hockey, it's the NHL, the best players in the world.
- 44:03to 2: And we happen to, in our city, we're very fortunate to have the best player, in my opinion, in the world, McDavid and then others, and Draisaitl and them.
- 44:10to 2: And you just take for granted, well, it's the ice and away they go, but there's so much to it, and you are so skilled in what you do, and this is incredible.
- 44:21to 2: It takes a whole team, it's not just the players.
- 44:23to 2: No, and yeah, it's incredible.
- 44:26to 2: It is.
- 44:26to 2: Yeah.
- 44:27to 2: Oh, I can't believe it.
- 44:28to 2: We don't have any more questions, but we're gonna come to our final.
- 44:30to 2: I know, we're coming to, like we're over 45 minutes already, yeah.
- 44:35to 2: So you know it's a good podcast.
- 44:37to 2: Like I'm just saying, like it's, we could go part two on this one probably, but anyways, yeah, okay.
- 44:42to 2: Okay, Brooklyn, what is the best piece of advice you've been given either personally or professionally that you carry with you to this day?
- 44:51to 2: Oh, probably just do your best.
- 44:54to 2: Like I know that sounds simple, but for me, like if you want to be a Zamboni driver, do your best at it, and then you can make it to the NHL.
- 45:03to 2: And if you want to do, if you want to be a doctor, if you want to be a lawyer, if you want to be anything in life, just do your best.
- 45:09to 2: And that's really, that's what I think about all the time is how can I do my best today?
- 45:16to 2: You know, so any kids listening, not, not. Kids love watching the Zamboni, they do.
- 45:22to 2: Kids, if, and so, hey, you know what?
- 45:25to 2: If you're thinking, I want to do that one day.
- 45:27to 2: Yeah, it's, yeah.
- 45:30to 2: And, and, and maybe look up Brooklyn and, and, and just.
- 45:33to 2: I don't think the kids are on the LinkedIn.
- 45:35to 2: No, the kids, the kids aren't on the LinkedIn.
- 45:39to 2: Not yet.
- 45:40to 2: Not until they're like 17.
- 45:42to 2: Then they get on the LinkedIn.
- 45:43to 2: But do you ever do, do you ever like bring in schools or anything to talk to them about what you do?
- 45:48to 2: And like a field trip type thing?
- 45:49to 2: So actually, the Oilers have been doing it, I believe, since Rexall.
- 45:53to 2: They have classes come in and they do the Oilers Ice School.
- 45:57to 2: So they're there for about a week and they learn all the different sides of Rogers Place because there's so much you could get into.
- 46:05to 2: But yeah, one of the things they do is they come and have a chat about the Zamboni and then they always draw the Zamboni.
- 46:10to 2: And so a lot of times like I've gotten to speak to the kids.
- 46:13to 2: I want to do that.
- 46:14to 2: Yeah, it's really fun.
- 46:16to 2: We should do that.
- 46:19to 2: We should find out what day they're doing the Zamboni stuff and go to the Zamboni day.
- 46:23to 2: That would be really cool.
- 46:24to 2: And I have a suggestion for the Edmonton Oilers, because we've been looking.
- 46:31to 2: We were looking for today.
- 46:33to 2: We wanted to find little Zamboni, diecast Zamboni Zambonis.
- 46:38to 2: And I can't find them anywhere.
- 46:40to 2: Oh, really?
- 46:40to 2: And last night at the game, I'm going to be honest, I walked around pretty much the entire rink, going to all the authentic stores.
- 46:47to 2: And I asked them, do you have any little Zambonis?
- 46:50to 2: And most of the time I got a funny look.
- 46:53to 2: But I want a little Zamboni in my office.
- 46:56to 2: Anyway, they're pretty cool.
- 46:57to 2: So Oilers, they'd sell, I'm telling you right now.
- 47:00to 2: And then you could have Brooklyn one day standing there signing them.
- 47:03to 2: That would be even better.
- 47:05to 2: Or a Zamboni hat, an Oilers Zamboni hat, and Brooklyn could sign them.
- 47:09to 2: So they do have the popcorn bucket right now.
- 47:11to 2: I don't know if you saw those.
- 47:12to 2: I didn't know.
- 47:13to 2: Oh yeah, so they have the Zamboni, the wheels move, and you can actually open up the bucket.
- 47:19to 2: Wait, why did I not see this last night?
- 47:21to 2: Because you're not in...
- 47:23to 2: I know, yeah.
- 47:23to 2: It would have been in the concessions, I think.
- 47:25to 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:26to 2: Okay, that's it.
- 47:28to 2: I'm there Saturday night.
- 47:29to 2: Will they still have it Saturday night?
- 47:31to 2: I hope so.
- 47:33to 2: I'm going downstairs Saturday night. I'll try to bring you one if they don't.
- 47:37to 2: I'm going downstairs Saturday night.
- 47:39to 2: I'm getting two Zamboni, one for you, thank you, and a Zamboni bucket for me.
- 47:44to 2: That's what I'm getting.
- 47:44to 2: That's great.
- 47:46to 2: I'm just saying.
- 47:47to 2: That's what we're doing.
- 47:48to 2: This podcast has been amazing.
- 47:50to 2: Brooklyn, you're phenomenal.
- 47:52to 2: Thank you so much.
- 47:53to 2: Oilers should be so proud to have you.
- 47:55to 2: Thank you.
- 47:56to 2: Ship, proud to have her, man.
- 48:00to 2: And the whole team over there.
- 48:01to 2: And you truly are amazing.
- 48:03to 2: And it is.
- 48:04to 2: It's a skill.
- 48:05to 2: It's an art.
- 48:07to 2: It's amazing.
- 48:07to 2: And so thank you for taking the time to do this.
- 48:09to 2: Oh, thank you.
- 48:10to 2: And I know, I know, I've sounded a little like I'm a 15-year-old or a 16-year-old one, but I really, this is really cool.
- 48:17to 2: I've, everything, you've answered every question pretty much.
- 48:20to 2: Oh, good.
- 48:20to 2: I've had about this.
- 48:21to 2: And so this is cool.
- 48:22to 2: So, hey, everybody, thanks for listening.
- 48:26to 2: Share this podcast with everybody you know, your friends, your neighbors, your coworkers, your enemies.
- 48:32to 2: If you don't have a friend, make one.
- 48:35to 2: And this would be the podcast.
- 48:38to 2: If you don't have a friend, when you're at the bar or wherever you are, say, hey, you want to hear a great podcast about the Zambonis, this would make you a friend for life. I agree.
- 48:46to 2: Tell them about this.
- 48:47to 2: And just tell them.
