- 2:43Speaker 1: want anyone to take offense by this. Not you guys,
- 2:46Speaker 1: other people will be offended. This is probably this is
- 2:49Speaker 1: the greatest collection of my favorite people to ever be
- 2:54Speaker 1: on the show, the highest, like the highest aggregation of
- 3:00Speaker 1: my favorite people to ever be here. Tie on, wow,
- 3:03Speaker 1: yeah wow, yeah. Pressure's on. Now keep that keep that status.
- 3:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna run around. How So we're at our fishack
- 3:11Speaker 1: in Alaska. Jamie Fitzgerald is here, Jamie, I'm gonna I'm
- 3:14Speaker 1: gonna talk about how I know you guys when in
- 3:20Speaker 1: nineteen ninety lean back a little bit sets people can
- 3:23Speaker 1: see fits there in nineteen ninety trying to think I
- 3:30Speaker 1: did two years at community college. I did a semester
- 3:33Speaker 1: at Lake State, and I think it would have been winner.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Of ninety five.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Somewhere around there. Winter in ninety five, I moved down
- 3:44Speaker 1: to Grand Rapids, Michigan, bounced around a little bit, and
- 3:47Speaker 1: then landed in a house with YouTube and some other people.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Uh it was it was such a house that turnover
- 3:59Speaker 1: was so high there that none of the people that
- 4:03Speaker 1: lived there. I remember someone realizing that no one that
- 4:06Speaker 1: lived there was on the lease like other people, other
- 4:11Speaker 1: forgotten individuals had signed the lease and it was or
- 4:14Speaker 1: maybe Schmidty was on the lease, was on the.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Least, but he was in Washington at that point by
- 4:18Speaker 2: the time you got here.
- 4:20Speaker 1: And that's how I met Fitzgerald and Andrew Radjulowski. Jamie Fitzgerald,
- 4:25Speaker 1: r Andrew Ragelowski.
- 4:26Speaker 2: How many years ago was that I was thinking about
- 4:30Speaker 2: this almost thirty years.
- 4:31Speaker 5: Yeah, coming up on thirty.
- 4:34Speaker 1: One of my favorite sentences, if I told you the sentence,
- 4:39Speaker 1: probably the best sentence I ever heard, was said in
- 4:42Speaker 1: that house. Our other roommate who's not with us, Mark Schmidt,
- 4:47Speaker 1: was from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and he really liked Sheboygan brats. Okay,
- 4:57Speaker 1: he would periodically from his mother get a box the
- 5:00Speaker 1: Brons big box. Andy would boil those brots in I
- 5:08Speaker 1: think beer.
- 5:09Speaker 5: Beer onions and butter.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Okay, all these brots and beer, onions and butter. He
- 5:15Speaker 1: was in culinary arts school.
- 5:17Speaker 6: That's what I wanted. That's the first one.
- 5:24Speaker 1: So he knew this. He knew this trick. Okay, and
- 5:30Speaker 1: you the leftovers I'm leading up to word of sense.
- 5:35Speaker 1: The leftovers would go into the fridge and the butter
- 5:38Speaker 1: would solidify on the roof. On the top, you'd get
- 5:43Speaker 1: like an inch of half inch of butter form a
- 5:46Speaker 1: rock hard layer, and under that would be beer and brots.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Hold that in mind. Okay, we were talking about those
- 5:57Speaker 1: are in the fridge, and we're talking about we're having
- 6:01Speaker 1: a conversation about ice fishing in the middle of the night.
- 6:06Speaker 1: And Andy then says my favorite sentence I've ever heard
- 6:11Speaker 1: in reference to the in the pot and the fridge.
- 6:15Speaker 1: He says, if you want to talk about late night
- 6:19Speaker 1: ice fishing, why don't you go aug ur a hole
- 6:23Speaker 1: through that butter and pull out one of that bloggers.
- 6:31Speaker 7: And that's great trophy brats.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Yeah, that was one of my best sentences ever. Seth's
- 6:42Speaker 1: always on the show, you know him. My brother Danny's
- 6:46Speaker 1: on the show. And to set the scene here, what
- 6:50Speaker 1: year was it that? What year was it that we
- 6:53Speaker 1: bought this place? Oh six o god? And then explain
- 6:59Speaker 1: to people how you uh explain to people how you
- 7:04Speaker 1: came out to the island.
- 7:06Speaker 8: Yeah, I was working for the University of Alaska at
- 7:10Speaker 8: the time, and we were starting a new project and
- 7:13Speaker 8: in southeast where we were doing some water quality mining
- 7:18Speaker 8: or water quality monitoring, mostly related to like timber harvest
- 7:23Speaker 8: and mining and that sort of thing. And we had
- 7:26Speaker 8: a few meetings in different villages just letting people know
- 7:30Speaker 8: what we were all about and what we were doing
- 7:32Speaker 8: down here.
- 7:33Speaker 1: And when we.
- 7:36Speaker 8: Went to Cassan, the the village kind of through a
- 7:41Speaker 8: little get together and invited folks to come meet us.
- 7:44Speaker 8: And Ron Ron Layton showed up with a bunch of shrimp.
- 7:48Speaker 8: He's been on the show, yeah, yeah, yeah, and he
- 7:52Speaker 8: was very interested in what we were working on and
- 7:55Speaker 8: wanted to get involved in help out. So he invited
- 7:58Speaker 8: us to come base out of his house here in
- 8:02Speaker 8: South ry Cove for a while while we're doing some
- 8:04Speaker 8: of the work and offered the motor USTs around in
- 8:07Speaker 8: his boat, you know.
- 8:07Speaker 1: And you guys are going into streams sampling of invertebrates.
- 8:12Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was some water quality measurements and
- 8:16Speaker 8: some stream habitat measurements, some invertebrate sampling, and yeah, we
- 8:21Speaker 8: worked on Dan Bugan and I worked on that project
- 8:23Speaker 8: for a number of years, all over We travel all
- 8:25Speaker 8: over southeast Lastka. It was a pretty deep project. Took
- 8:27Speaker 8: taking the ferry around and chartering airplanes and really got
- 8:31Speaker 8: to see the lay of the land quite a bit.
- 8:33Speaker 8: And the first year ron Ron invited us down for
- 8:38Speaker 8: the first year of the project, and then I didn't
- 8:40Speaker 8: This is before I really knew him. We got in
- 8:44Speaker 8: some argument over the phone and I'm not used to
- 8:47Speaker 8: getting in arguments with like grown men, and I can't
- 8:51Speaker 8: even remember what we were arguing about, and things got
- 8:55Speaker 8: real testy, and like he hung up the phone on me,
- 8:58Speaker 8: and I didn't really know what to make of it,
- 9:00Speaker 8: and we just didn't go. You know, we didn't come
- 9:03Speaker 8: to the cove that first year. I think that was
- 9:05Speaker 8: probably like two thousand and three or two thousand and
- 9:08Speaker 8: two because of the argument. Yeah, I never heard the story.
- 9:11Speaker 8: Oh yeah, I just like, Wow, that's not going to
- 9:13Speaker 8: work out, you know, Like that guy is fucking crazy.
- 9:18Speaker 1: And he didn't at the time realize that he was
- 9:21Speaker 1: just crazy exactly exactly so.
- 9:25Speaker 8: But he calls me up like the next year in
- 9:29Speaker 8: the springtime, Hey you guys, you guys coming down this
- 9:31Speaker 8: year like nothing had happened, so like, okay, I'll write again,
- 9:36Speaker 8: you know. And yeah, we showed up and he did
- 9:40Speaker 8: everything he said he was gonna do, and hung out
- 9:41Speaker 8: with him and Joan just I mean, absolutely delightful people.
- 9:44Speaker 8: He took us all over the places we needed to go,
- 9:46Speaker 8: and then the evenings we were running trimp pots and
- 9:48Speaker 8: fish and hall a bit and m I've never even
- 9:52Speaker 8: caught a halbit before. Yeah, we'd anchored it outside the cove.
- 9:54Speaker 8: And the first hel but ever caught was with Ron
- 9:57Speaker 8: and this oh actually no, the first helbot ever caught
- 9:59Speaker 8: was that time you came, Steve, which was maybe two
- 10:02Speaker 8: years later. That must have been like oh four or five, yep. Yeah,
- 10:07Speaker 8: and Ron anchors anchored up and kind of got me
- 10:10Speaker 8: into one hundred and seventy pound hell of it. That's
- 10:12Speaker 8: the first one I ever caught.
- 10:14Speaker 1: To this today, that's the biggest hell but I've seen
- 10:17Speaker 1: come up on a rod and reel okay here, you know. Yeah.
- 10:22Speaker 8: So yeah, we based out of here for work for
- 10:25Speaker 8: a couple of years, and then Ron just kept inviting
- 10:28Speaker 8: me back to fish and run pots, you know, for
- 10:30Speaker 8: a week at a time every summer, and I and
- 10:32Speaker 8: him and Joan would say, oh, come for two weeks
- 10:34Speaker 8: next year, you know. And and well you came down
- 10:36Speaker 8: with me that one year, Steve. And and then after
- 10:40Speaker 8: after just staying at Ron and Jones for a couple
- 10:42Speaker 8: of years just fishing, you know, after that project was over.
- 10:45Speaker 8: At one point he called and say, Hey, that Jack's
- 10:48Speaker 8: were stale next door. You guys should think about buying it.
- 10:52Speaker 8: So yeah, the rest is history.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Uh. And Matt Drolls, Uh, we've known each other million years.
- 11:01Speaker 1: So we went to the same junior high and high
- 11:03Speaker 1: school and I met in sixth grade camp. Yeah, that
- 11:09Speaker 1: was that pendlu One camp.
- 11:11Speaker 9: Yeah, we were we were I think we were like
- 11:13Speaker 9: we shared the bunk beds.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:16Speaker 9: Yeah, it's because they put your random people because different
- 11:19Speaker 9: elementaries all went to that camp and we just got
- 11:21Speaker 9: paired up. And that's that's the first time. Yeah, Dan
- 11:24Speaker 9: and I met. That would have been sixth grade.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Well a year later he was working there. Ye, such
- 11:32Speaker 1: a memorable experience where reliveing. Uh. Yeah, So we grew
- 11:37Speaker 1: up together in West Michigan. And man, I mean, in
- 11:40Speaker 1: addition to all the normal stuff every high school kids do,
- 11:45Speaker 1: like shooting bottle rockets at each other, going out whooping
- 11:50Speaker 1: it up and hanging out with friends. We did a
- 11:52Speaker 1: ton of very generalist outdoor yeah, very generalist outdoor pursuits everything.
- 12:01Speaker 9: Yeah, if you had to make a list of all
- 12:03Speaker 9: the things that we did, like it'd be endless. I mean,
- 12:06Speaker 9: you know, ride around, squirrel hunting and you know, on
- 12:09Speaker 9: up to squid jigging in seattle like we'd like, you know,
- 12:12Speaker 9: kind of ran the gamut, smell dipping.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Smell dipping, yeah, fishing the channel walls for small mouth,
- 12:18Speaker 1: stream fish and.
- 12:19Speaker 9: Trout, taking our prime dates to go smell dipping, busting brush.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Set out for dinner, busting brush for cottontail rab yeah,
- 12:29Speaker 1: hunting morels a little bit later, tons of bluegill fishing,
- 12:34Speaker 1: northern pike fishing through the ice, white fish spearing through
- 12:37Speaker 1: the ice.
- 12:37Speaker 9: Oh yeah, whitefish fishing at the power plant river, steelhead fishing.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Yeah. Sure, I could go on a deep, deep, long
- 12:48Speaker 1: list of activities.
- 12:49Speaker 9: And then you've been coming here for how long I came?
- 12:53Speaker 9: I might have been here the first or second year.
- 12:55Speaker 9: Was the first time I was here. And then there
- 12:56Speaker 9: was a then you're here for my bachelor party, I think,
- 12:59Speaker 9: so yeah, yeah, yeah, And then a couple of times there,
- 13:03Speaker 9: but I've been coming back here consistently since twenty sixteen.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And Fitzgerald, you said the other day, you've been here
- 13:10Speaker 1: how many times?
- 13:12Speaker 2: I think this is my fifteenth time here? Fourteenth or fifteenth.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Fitz said the other day, he's been to Alaska fifteen times,
- 13:18Speaker 1: but he's only been here, never been anywhere else.
- 13:24Speaker 2: What else is there?
- 13:27Speaker 1: And then uh, yeah, and you were introduced by way
- 13:30Speaker 1: of your broatworst recipe. So I was going fitz and
- 13:35Speaker 1: I were going on just like regular Joe Blow College
- 13:37Speaker 1: and you were in culinary arts at the time.
- 13:40Speaker 5: But I did a couple of years at Grand Valley
- 13:42Speaker 5: as well. Oh you did some regular college too, And
- 13:45Speaker 5: then right at that whole junction when you moved in,
- 13:47Speaker 5: that was when I transferred over to the colonial program downtown.
- 13:53Speaker 5: And yeah, that house was quite the scene.
- 13:57Speaker 1: The scene, and you were you were making uh when
- 14:02Speaker 1: you took pastry class, I think there was you was
- 14:07Speaker 1: it you and pastry one or pastry two? And so
- 14:09Speaker 1: you'd bring all the pastries home.
- 14:12Speaker 5: Oh, you might be thinking that Mark was working at
- 14:14Speaker 5: a bakery slash deli, that he would bring a bunch
- 14:17Speaker 5: of stuff.
- 14:20Speaker 6: There was always a fridge full of food for a
- 14:22Speaker 6: bunch of broke college kids. We were doing doing hard.
- 14:25Speaker 6: But I remember coming home from class.
- 14:27Speaker 5: And there'd be a couple of big old salmon from
- 14:30Speaker 5: the river and the or was it steel steelhead?
- 14:36Speaker 1: Uh? Tell tell people about your what you went on
- 14:39Speaker 1: to do for your career, which is interesting. You landed
- 14:42Speaker 1: out in the San Juan Islands eventually. Uh.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Yeah, after we left Michigan, kind of filtered my way
- 14:49Speaker 5: out to the West coast and out to small island, uh,
- 14:52Speaker 5: San Juan Island out in northwest Washington, north of Seattle there,
- 14:57Speaker 5: and kind of kicked around work for the parks for
- 14:58Speaker 5: a few years, which it was a pretty fun job.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Real lighthouse keeper yep.
- 15:07Speaker 5: But then for the last sixteen years I've been working
- 15:10Speaker 5: for the school district on the island, which is a small,
- 15:13Speaker 5: small community. I mean, the whole district K through twelve
- 15:17Speaker 5: is under thousand, undred thousand kids all the way through.
- 15:21Speaker 5: But yeah, I built a food program there kind of
- 15:24Speaker 5: from the ground up, and it's kind of progressive. You know,
- 15:29Speaker 5: everything's from scratch. I source as much local practice as
- 15:34Speaker 5: I can and then kind of go out from there,
- 15:36Speaker 5: you know, And I've got great people working for me
- 15:39Speaker 5: and find really cool grants to bring in a lot
- 15:42Speaker 5: of fresh produce from Washington and Oregon and the surrounding areas.
- 15:48Speaker 1: And when you came in, they were going to scrap
- 15:50Speaker 1: their lunch program.
- 15:51Speaker 6: Yeah, it was.
- 15:51Speaker 5: It was failing because they were just doing the standard garbage,
- 15:55Speaker 5: you know, food and just didn't have the participation to
- 15:59Speaker 5: make it sustainable. So somebody got a hold, somebody got
- 16:04Speaker 5: a hold of a little bit of grant money, and
- 16:05Speaker 5: my name got thrown.
- 16:06Speaker 1: In the ring.
- 16:06Speaker 6: I had no idea.
- 16:07Speaker 5: I mean, I never stepped foot in the school before,
- 16:09Speaker 5: and that first year was a lot of trial and error,
- 16:12Speaker 5: and I put a lot of hours in, but I
- 16:14Speaker 5: kind of got got the ship righted and kind of
- 16:17Speaker 5: stuck with it, and yeah, built pretty successful program over
- 16:20Speaker 5: the years.
- 16:21Speaker 1: And how many kids you guys feed every day.
- 16:23Speaker 5: Between breakfast and launch About five five hundred plus.
- 16:27Speaker 1: So he was and he was explaining to my kids
- 16:30Speaker 1: this morning, when you guys do pizza, Hm, well, kids
- 16:35Speaker 1: helped cook. Yeah.
- 16:37Speaker 6: So I have five classes.
- 16:38Speaker 5: So the way we set it up that and that's
- 16:40Speaker 5: another unique piece of the program that we have is
- 16:42Speaker 5: the fact that I have like a work based learning internship.
- 16:46Speaker 5: And that was kind of the early years. There was
- 16:50Speaker 5: very few electives.
- 16:52Speaker 6: In the district.
- 16:53Speaker 5: There was you know, the standard art and this and that,
- 16:55Speaker 5: and we just had some kids that just had no place,
- 17:00Speaker 5: you know, to land. They weren't doing very good in
- 17:03Speaker 5: the classroom. And some of the counselors kind of approached
- 17:07Speaker 5: me and they said, hey, I've got these kids, a
- 17:08Speaker 5: couple of them that are just lost. I said, zend
- 17:12Speaker 5: them my way, you know, and I put knives in
- 17:14Speaker 5: their pants. Yeah, great idea. There's a real sharp knife kid.
- 17:19Speaker 5: And it kind of took and from that we introduced
- 17:25Speaker 5: an actual class and so I've got five classes full
- 17:29Speaker 5: of kids that it's set up as a work based
- 17:31Speaker 5: learning internship, so they get credit for basically coming in
- 17:37Speaker 5: and work.
- 17:38Speaker 6: It's like I treat it like they've left the building
- 17:40Speaker 6: to come into a job.
- 17:42Speaker 5: So each class kind of knows its roll, and through
- 17:45Speaker 5: the course of the morning, each class kind of has
- 17:47Speaker 5: a different role, but they know they come in. They
- 17:50Speaker 5: set up the station with a cutting board and knife,
- 17:52Speaker 5: and there's a big touchscreen board that they hit the
- 17:56Speaker 5: list every morning. I read a fresh list every morning,
- 17:58Speaker 5: and they start knocking things down and they're yeah, slicing, dicing,
- 18:02Speaker 5: they're cleaning, they're doing all kind of stuff whatever.
- 18:04Speaker 6: I come in and they just they come in. I
- 18:05Speaker 6: just start barking at them.
- 18:06Speaker 1: And so it's like, prepare the lunch.
- 18:11Speaker 6: Yeah, they help, they yeah, they help.
- 18:13Speaker 1: You make them call you chef.
- 18:14Speaker 5: Oh yeah, yeah, they call the chef for sure.
- 18:18Speaker 1: And when you guys do pizza day, you guys are
- 18:20Speaker 1: making dough from scratch and rolling up pizza crust. Oh yeah,
- 18:24Speaker 1: for five hundred hundreds of people. Yeah, and when you
- 18:27Speaker 1: guys make mac and cheese, tell me the about give
- 18:31Speaker 1: people just to get a sense. Tell people how you
- 18:33Speaker 1: make mac.
- 18:34Speaker 6: Well, I'd make the sauce from scratch.
- 18:36Speaker 5: So that's about anywhere between twelve to fifteen pounds of butter,
- 18:41Speaker 5: twelve to fifteen pounds of flour, about fifteen gallons of milk,
- 18:45Speaker 5: and then about thirty to thirty five pounds of dried
- 18:47Speaker 5: pasta thirty forty pounds of shreaded cheese. But everything, I mean,
- 18:52Speaker 5: that's it, and that's all that's.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Is making mac and cheese. Yeah, it's the coolest thing
- 18:56Speaker 1: in the world. Now, it's a lot.
- 18:58Speaker 6: And with a lot of kids, it's not.
- 19:02Speaker 5: A lot of them aren't necessarily going into the hospitality industry,
- 19:05Speaker 5: but it's for a lot of kids. I only deal
- 19:07Speaker 5: with high school kids, but for some of the younger
- 19:10Speaker 5: ones ninth tenth grade, they've never had a job before.
- 19:13Speaker 5: They don't know, you know, any kind of structure as
- 19:16Speaker 5: far as the workforce goes. So it's kind of their
- 19:18Speaker 5: first taste of this is what it means to have
- 19:21Speaker 5: a job, and this is what it means to have
- 19:23Speaker 5: people rely on you every day, because when they don't
- 19:25Speaker 5: show up, then.
- 19:27Speaker 6: I've got to do double the work or the other
- 19:29Speaker 6: students in the class have to do.
- 19:30Speaker 5: So I treat it as you know, you're on your
- 19:34Speaker 5: way to the workforce. This is what it means, no
- 19:36Speaker 5: matter if you're in hospitality or if you're in accounting,
- 19:40Speaker 5: or if you're whatever you decide to go do. This
- 19:43Speaker 5: is what it means to be accountable and have a
- 19:45Speaker 5: job and you know, get your head together. And had
- 19:49Speaker 5: some kids going to culinary arts. Oh yeah, definitely. I've
- 19:51Speaker 5: so said kids all over the place. The Art Institute
- 19:55Speaker 5: in Seattle has a great program. I've sent quite a
- 19:57Speaker 5: few kids down there. I've sent one kid might actually
- 19:59Speaker 5: the regional kid that started the whole program because he
- 20:02Speaker 5: was just a wreck. He ended up going all the
- 20:05Speaker 5: way over to the New England Colinery Institute. Yeah, seriously, Yep,
- 20:11Speaker 5: that's cool, and then went down and did an internship
- 20:13Speaker 5: down New Orleans and came back and started a family
- 20:16Speaker 5: on the island.
- 20:16Speaker 6: The whole work. Yeah, this is one of my my.
- 20:19Speaker 5: Success sex stories, very old Rowan.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Yeah, that's cool, that's all. Yeah, well I passed up Matt. Matt,
- 20:25Speaker 1: you're you teach? Yeah, high school? Yeah, Andy, and I've.
- 20:28Speaker 9: Shared a lot of stories about this kind of stuff,
- 20:30Speaker 9: and yeah, I can't, you know, have to make this
- 20:32Speaker 9: an education podcast, but yeah, it's it's just amazing if
- 20:35Speaker 9: you can get him in that right situation because I've
- 20:37Speaker 9: had the same not as as as pronounced as that,
- 20:40Speaker 9: but you know, running a greenhouse and a garden and
- 20:42Speaker 9: an alcophonics facility and getting kids those jobs and just
- 20:46Speaker 9: seeing kids that are kind of lost in the in
- 20:48Speaker 9: what would be traditional and find out something new for
- 20:50Speaker 9: them to do is is. Yeah, it's unbelievably rewarding, and
- 20:54Speaker 9: it's it's cool to see it happened and.
- 20:55Speaker 6: It transfers over.
- 20:56Speaker 5: I've had so many kids that just did want to
- 20:58Speaker 5: be at school, and then all of a sudden they
- 20:59Speaker 5: want to come to be in the kitchen, and then
- 21:03Speaker 5: they're there for the day and that, you know, teachers
- 21:04Speaker 5: coming on, what are you doing down there? Because all
- 21:06Speaker 5: of a sudden, you know so and so is here
- 21:08Speaker 5: every day and they're they're actually kind of participating.
- 21:11Speaker 6: So it's Yeah, it transfers down the line.
- 21:13Speaker 1: I think I've had kids.
- 21:14Speaker 6: He's excited about stuff.
- 21:15Speaker 1: They say.
- 21:16Speaker 9: They're kind of a wreck being in the back of
- 21:17Speaker 9: the classroom just eating raw. Let us think, and this
- 21:19Speaker 9: is the best let us.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I have ever had as you grew it. Yeah, we've
- 21:25Speaker 1: plugged it a couple times to tell people about your business.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Your side hustle, oh the side of the summertime.
- 21:29Speaker 9: Side Hustle is a mobile bar in Northern Michigan called Romannomi.
- 21:33Speaker 9: The know me is Northern Michigan, kind of a shortened
- 21:36Speaker 9: version of that. Yeah, we my wife and I and
- 21:39Speaker 9: another couple run it and we do a mobile bar.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Usually its weddings and other events. We've done everything from.
- 21:46Speaker 9: Baby showers to graduation parties. But yeah, it's kind of
- 21:49Speaker 9: a I think it was a bartending service, but we
- 21:51Speaker 9: show up with this cool renovated nineteen sixty nine trailer
- 21:55Speaker 9: returned into kind of a speakeasy looking vibe. And so
- 21:58Speaker 9: we meet with client. They just what they want and
- 22:01Speaker 9: uh we make the order for them. We'll pick it
- 22:03Speaker 9: up and then uh coming to their come to their event,
- 22:06Speaker 9: ready to go.
- 22:07Speaker 1: So it's a fun fun side us on the stakes
- 22:09Speaker 1: care all that you make specialty cocktails.
- 22:11Speaker 9: Oh yeah, we meet with the client and design the
- 22:13Speaker 9: cotail they want and and uh yeah, it's fun. It's
- 22:16Speaker 9: a lot of fun everybody and you and your wife man, yeah,
- 22:19Speaker 9: and another couple.
- 22:20Speaker 1: But uh yeah, but everybody's happy to see it when
- 22:22Speaker 1: you show up. You know, you're one of those.
- 22:23Speaker 9: Everybody's happy to see the virol And.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Matt Dross is good at a party too.
- 22:29Speaker 1: So I found my niche teacher by day. Uh, I
- 22:39Speaker 1: gotta do a couple of quick things. Well, I got
- 22:42Speaker 1: to run one by you. We get people that write
- 22:44Speaker 1: in ethics questions. Okay, oh first Dan, you're gonna speak
- 22:50Speaker 1: to this, you know about fisheries. Just a couple of
- 22:52Speaker 1: listener emails we got to take care of. We recently
- 22:55Speaker 1: had on people from Colossal Bioscience on about cloning the
- 23:03Speaker 1: sort of technical challenges and moral challenges of cloning wooly mammoths,
- 23:10Speaker 1: and on that show, Callahan got to On that episode,
- 23:17Speaker 1: Ryan Callahan got to talk about what is the with
- 23:22Speaker 1: all the new work in genetics. In genetics, what might
- 23:25Speaker 1: be done about invasives? And a fisheries guy wrote in
- 23:36Speaker 1: talking about talking about this work to remove non native
- 23:43Speaker 1: brook trout in the Western US. Are you familiar with this,
- 23:47Speaker 1: I'll tell you more. Why why super mail? Yeah? Explain that.
- 23:52Speaker 8: Explain that in Layman's terms, Well, genetics and invasives are
- 23:59Speaker 8: neither of the those are my area of expertise. But
- 24:02Speaker 8: the gist of it is, I think if you were
- 24:05Speaker 8: trying to eliminate invasive brick trout population, you would.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Somehow cox.
- 24:15Speaker 8: H hatchery broodstock to produce why why so homozigous male
- 24:25Speaker 8: brick trot right, that then you didn't swamp the system
- 24:28Speaker 8: with these why why brick trout? And so every so
- 24:33Speaker 8: the male determines the sex, right, so every offspring they're
- 24:36Speaker 8: going to have, it's going to be male, and so
- 24:39Speaker 8: you're just eliminating females from the population. It's kind of
- 24:43Speaker 8: how it works. But I mean, I've never been involved
- 24:45Speaker 8: with that sort of work. I don't really know the
- 24:47Speaker 8: details of it, but that's the gist of it.
- 24:49Speaker 1: So hay Spur. Here's more in technical terminology. Hay Spur
- 24:54Speaker 1: fish hatchery just south of Haley, Idaho. The staff spawns
- 24:59Speaker 1: geno typic y Y chromosome males with genotypic y Y
- 25:05Speaker 1: chromosome females. Their offspring are one hundred percent y Y
- 25:10Speaker 1: chromosome males. You then stock them. They spawn with wild
- 25:16Speaker 1: female brook trout and spin off one hundred percent males
- 25:21Speaker 1: that also have that same y Y or y Y
- 25:26Speaker 1: being male. Right after several years, the entire stream population
- 25:31Speaker 1: becomes male or x y being male. Two.
- 25:35Speaker 8: So if you have wild type females, you're gonna they're
- 25:38Speaker 8: gonna have x y sex chromosomes, right, So you're you
- 25:42Speaker 8: would have some yy males and some x y males Like.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Oh okay, yeah, he says, yeah, They're all springs will
- 25:48Speaker 1: then be why their offspring will then be one hundred
- 25:50Speaker 1: percent male. Yeah, because each offspring will consist of one
- 25:56Speaker 1: X chromosome from the mother and one Y chromosome from
- 25:59Speaker 1: the stocked Superman. Eventually they're all males. The males and
- 26:03Speaker 1: eventually giving up any excess to make xx females. Right,
- 26:08Speaker 1: So yeah, does this standard reason that you'd want to
- 26:10Speaker 1: be fishing that spot? Would those males all get real
- 26:14Speaker 1: big or that doesn't matter. Oh, you're thinking that right
- 26:19Speaker 1: before the crash. It'd be great birkshop fishing. You know
- 26:23Speaker 1: what you're thinking.
- 26:24Speaker 8: You're thinking remember when the state of Michigan was stocking
- 26:28Speaker 8: super salmon. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's what you're thinking of.
- 26:30Speaker 8: So the idea there because they're they only spawned once, right,
- 26:34Speaker 8: So the thinking there was that these fish are never
- 26:37Speaker 8: going to spawn and die, They're just going to keep
- 26:39Speaker 8: growing indefinitely. But that wouldn't apply to you know, a
- 26:44Speaker 8: fish that spawns over and over again, like a brook trout.
- 26:46Speaker 8: It wouldn't interfere.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you remember being kids and they would have
- 26:50Speaker 1: the salmon derbys. Yeah, and they would go out and tag.
- 26:54Speaker 1: They'd catch one salmon and tag it, and it was
- 26:57Speaker 1: like a millillion dollars, like a million dollar fish, and
- 27:00Speaker 1: just everybody's go fishing thinking they're going to catch that
- 27:02Speaker 1: sung bitch over again to get all that money. But
- 27:05Speaker 1: he didn't know where in the lake. It was. Okay,
- 27:10Speaker 1: here are you guys ready for the Oh, here's here's one. No,
- 27:18Speaker 1: there's no thing to say here. But we were recently
- 27:20Speaker 1: celebrating small town outdoor columnists. Who's who's ours growing up?
- 27:25Speaker 1: Oh I don't know, Oh shit, because we're Chronicle ch
- 27:31Speaker 1: Mark something. Our friend Pat Dirk, and he's sort of
- 27:35Speaker 1: the last, the dying breed of small town outdoor columnists.
- 27:39Speaker 1: And the guy rode in to have a real gripe.
- 27:41Speaker 1: He's got a real bone to pick with small town
- 27:44Speaker 1: outdoor columnists because he says that his childhood swimming and
- 27:48Speaker 1: fishing spot actually got blown up by an outdoor columnist.
- 27:53Speaker 1: They were in a place under a bridge. They always
- 27:55Speaker 1: assume they weren't supposed to be there. They'd swim there
- 27:57Speaker 1: and catch a lot of nice brookies. Day guy shows
- 28:00Speaker 1: up and they assume he's there to yell at him,
- 28:03Speaker 1: But it turns out he's some kind of journalist. Interviews
- 28:07Speaker 1: all the kids there, takes a picture of their big
- 28:09Speaker 1: stringer of brookies, runs a piece about how cute it
- 28:13Speaker 1: is that these kids have this fishing whole understaid such
- 28:18Speaker 1: and such bridge, And he goes back there and it's
- 28:21Speaker 1: full of people. Yeah, that's a pretty easy spot to find.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Never yet, and he never he never forgave his small
- 28:27Speaker 1: town outdoor. What state was that in Pennsylvania? Is it
- 28:34Speaker 1: so home? Maybe I'm wrong? Oh no, sorry Washington, d
- 28:43Speaker 1: C suburbs. Huh, rural area in Virginia which has been
- 28:48Speaker 1: consumed sorry, rural Virginia, which is since he was a kid,
- 28:52Speaker 1: has been overtaken by DC suburbs and exurbs. Which is
- 28:58Speaker 1: a phrase. I don't think it has ever said in
- 29:00Speaker 1: the show. Here's the moral one. Ready, this guy lives
- 29:07Speaker 1: in their neighborhood. The neighborhoods no h o a. All right,
- 29:14Speaker 1: even though there's no hoa. His wife is the neighborhood president.
- 29:16Speaker 1: I don't know what that means.
- 29:19Speaker 6: He had seven chickens self appointed.
- 29:21Speaker 1: I don't know. Unless he wrote that's when he said
- 29:25Speaker 1: we live in a neighborhood with no hoa, he meant
- 29:28Speaker 1: to say we live in a neighborhood with an with
- 29:31Speaker 1: an h o a, because then he says, my wife
- 29:33Speaker 1: is actually the president the US. Is it Kamala Harris?
- 29:38Speaker 1: Is this from the future. It's Kamala Harris. The Polsters, Uh,
- 29:45Speaker 1: we're wrong. So he's got seven chickens, all get killed? Okay,
- 29:54Speaker 1: puts out a trail cam's a fox. He gets himself
- 29:59Speaker 1: a he's calling it a humane trap, meaning he's got
- 30:03Speaker 1: a live trap, captures the fox. He in his mind
- 30:08Speaker 1: is the thing to do now is to kill the fox.
- 30:10Speaker 1: His wife and daughter having none of it, he drives
- 30:14Speaker 1: the fox five miles down the road and lets it loose.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Against this better judgment. The neighborhood is now an uproar
- 30:23Speaker 1: because it turns out they all like that fox. He's
- 30:28Speaker 1: got a couple of questions. Is the thing going to
- 30:30Speaker 1: turn up back here anyway? Probably five miles? And who's
- 30:34Speaker 1: right people that want to see a fox or people
- 30:37Speaker 1: that want to have chickens.
- 30:41Speaker 8: I think it's coming right back. You ain't gonna get
- 30:45Speaker 8: it to go on that trap the second time. I'm surprised.
- 30:48Speaker 8: I'm really surprised he got to go on that trap
- 30:50Speaker 8: the first time. There's probably used to eating people's dog food,
- 30:54Speaker 8: and he was surprised.
- 30:54Speaker 1: He bathed it with tuna fish. You're surprised he got
- 30:57Speaker 1: the trap five miles Now, that's not gonna do it.
- 31:01Speaker 5: When I worked for the parks, we had a problem
- 31:04Speaker 5: fox out there that was to the point where it
- 31:06Speaker 5: was getting in everything. It was It actually even.
- 31:09Speaker 6: Pulled a bottle out of a baby stroller.
- 31:11Speaker 2: It was aggressive.
- 31:14Speaker 6: Serious. Yeah, and we captured that thing.
- 31:19Speaker 5: We just threw a blanket over it and threw it
- 31:20Speaker 5: in the garbage can and drove it thirteen miles to
- 31:23Speaker 5: the south end of the island.
- 31:25Speaker 6: And that thing was back the next day.
- 31:27Speaker 1: No, yeah, beat you guys home.
- 31:29Speaker 5: Yeah, to god, he was right back. I mean because
- 31:32Speaker 5: it was very distinct. He knew, he knew where it
- 31:34Speaker 5: was at.
- 31:35Speaker 8: You know, we used to have a dog that our
- 31:36Speaker 8: dad tried to give away a few times. It would
- 31:38Speaker 8: always come back.
- 31:39Speaker 1: You know. We named that dog. You know that dog's
- 31:41Speaker 1: name Kala. Oh that's right. Yeah, it was some like
- 31:46Speaker 1: word for leader. And the dog liked to play fat.
- 31:49Speaker 1: I don't even remember these details. That dog liked to
- 31:51Speaker 1: play fetch so much it would get green tomatoes out
- 31:53Speaker 1: of the garden. It was like a never ending supply
- 31:55Speaker 1: of balls, which my dad hated it. Well.
- 31:59Speaker 8: Part of the reason we wanted to get rid of
- 32:00Speaker 8: it is because I ate the right to right tomatoes
- 32:03Speaker 8: just destroyed tomatoes.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Yeah, if I remember this right, he wound up bringing
- 32:07Speaker 1: it like you know, your dad normally brings a dog
- 32:09Speaker 1: to a farm. That means he killed it, and that
- 32:12Speaker 1: happened with other pets, I'm sure. Oh yeah, but he
- 32:15Speaker 1: brought it to a farm literally, And if I remember right,
- 32:20Speaker 1: we were eating dinner one night and all of a sudden,
- 32:23Speaker 1: there's that dog comes by out the tomato in his mouth,
- 32:26Speaker 1: if I remember right, And that's something like a kayla.
- 32:33Speaker 1: The leader had come home.
- 32:35Speaker 8: Well, getting back to that fox, that fellow can tell
- 32:37Speaker 8: his neighbors not to worry. Uh, they haven't seen the
- 32:41Speaker 8: last of that fox. But he should tell his other
- 32:44Speaker 8: chickens to worry. He might just want to give himself
- 32:47Speaker 8: a chicken hut.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Yeah, but what he said he likes about He likes
- 32:50Speaker 1: having him run around, so it makes him feel like
- 32:52Speaker 1: he lives on a farm. And he also mentioned that
- 32:54Speaker 1: they spent a lot of time in his neighbor's yard.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Nothing so this might be a bad neighbor. Nothing more
- 32:59Speaker 1: farmer than a fox get in your chicken. So that's
- 33:01Speaker 1: true that uh he was baiting with tune official. Here's
- 33:08Speaker 1: a this is the here's the thing that guy wrote
- 33:09Speaker 1: in This guy says, Hey, guys, came across your podcast
- 33:13Speaker 1: started at episode one and I've worked my way up
- 33:16Speaker 1: to episode two ninety four and whenever wherever he's at.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Right now, we're spending a lot of time on skunk essence,
- 33:23Speaker 1: covering skunk essence. You're talking about a guy, Oh, I
- 33:30Speaker 1: know what we're talking about. A couple of people rolled
- 33:34Speaker 1: in where they've used. I was saying one day that
- 33:36Speaker 1: if I really wanted to get someone, Remember we were
- 33:39Speaker 1: trying to me and Sath, we were trying to we're
- 33:41Speaker 1: trying to harvest skunk essence from skunks. I was saying,
- 33:48Speaker 1: if I really wanted to get someone, I would take
- 33:49Speaker 1: that syringe. We're harvesting them with a syringe, and I
- 33:52Speaker 1: would just reach into their car and inject their pulse upholstery.
- 33:56Speaker 6: Oh my god.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Right, yeah, find it. You'd never find it, you'd never
- 34:03Speaker 1: find the culprit, you'd never realize what I had done.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Uh so, uh so he's listening to this. There's a
- 34:14Speaker 1: guy he there's a guy he knows that went through
- 34:19Speaker 1: this really bad divorce, loses the house to the wife,
- 34:25Speaker 1: loses his house to his wife, pulled out all the receptacles,
- 34:31Speaker 1: electrical receptacles in the house, the junction boxes, and put
- 34:39Speaker 1: open cans of tuna in the holes, and then sealed
- 34:44Speaker 1: them back up, So all the best money, I'm king
- 34:55Speaker 1: know nothing more than well.
- 34:57Speaker 10: Uh So, man should right back in with the follow up.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Yeah, follow up on that. Yeah, someone eventually tore out
- 35:07Speaker 1: the drywall and found the rotten tuna. Mm hmm. I
- 35:11Speaker 1: wonder if they got in trouble. I'm guessing that the
- 35:16Speaker 1: court would not look fondly on that, which leads me
- 35:20Speaker 1: to and we're gonna return to our current discussion. Uh So.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Media to Radio Live is live, meaning our live show
- 35:28Speaker 1: is live h every Thursday around ten in the morning
- 35:33Speaker 1: on our podcast network. It'll it'll be later available on YouTube.
- 35:38Speaker 1: But there's a live show that we're doing, co anchored
- 35:42Speaker 1: by a lot of your favorite guests, So Randall, cal Brody, Spencer,
- 35:45Speaker 1: me Yannie, different group each week and we're doing it'll
- 35:50Speaker 1: be your picture of activities in the country. So the
- 35:55Speaker 1: live show is field reports from hunters, anglers, biologists, weird people, whatever,
- 36:03Speaker 1: a lot of funny segments and jokes, a live show
- 36:06Speaker 1: of people calling in reporting from their area what's going on.
- 36:10Speaker 1: So you get a live snapshot of the oddest and
- 36:15Speaker 1: funnest activities and whatnot. Story's going on from around the country.
- 36:22Speaker 1: It'd be like a new show me eating radio live
- 36:27Speaker 1: is live. All right, check it out. With all that said,
- 36:34Speaker 1: I want to talk about what, like you guys come
- 36:36Speaker 1: here every year, but you've been here how many years?
- 36:39Speaker 2: Fifteen?
- 36:40Speaker 1: Okay? Layout for me? How you you come home with
- 36:44Speaker 1: some fish? We call it a cut. You get a cut.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Let's we should talk about that first. We fish like communists.
- 36:55Speaker 1: It's cold, it's rainy, there's vodka on the shelf. We're
- 37:03Speaker 1: like communists, where all the activities we engage in everything
- 37:10Speaker 1: gets pooled, collectivized, collectivized, meaning if even if you're on
- 37:14Speaker 1: a work detail, if you got to work, like if
- 37:17Speaker 1: you got you if let's say for some day you
- 37:19Speaker 1: had to do your normal job for a day, like
- 37:21Speaker 1: catch up on emails, or you were like fixing something
- 37:24Speaker 1: that broke, or you like had to go get gas,
- 37:27Speaker 1: you had to make the dock so it wasn't a
- 37:30Speaker 1: death trap and put some tar paper down whatever. So
- 37:33Speaker 1: if people can get a grip on a wet, wooden,
- 37:35Speaker 1: slimy dock, that doesn't pull you out. And different activities
- 37:41Speaker 1: could be like doing shellfish, going for shellfish. It could
- 37:44Speaker 1: be different kind of fishing things, whatever, and everything gets
- 37:49Speaker 1: pulled into a freezer, and then on breakup day everything
- 37:56Speaker 1: is categorized. There's now a suitcase, the whole piece of papers.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Official record of catch.
- 38:02Speaker 1: Yeah, official record of catch. It's in a briefcase, and
- 38:06Speaker 1: there's a tally made and the tally would be how
- 38:09Speaker 1: many other packages of whatever? And it gets divided out.
- 38:12Speaker 1: The way we kind of do it is adult adult angler.
- 38:17Speaker 1: We haven't rolled kids. Kids don't get their own catch.
- 38:20Speaker 1: A kids take goes into the adult angler take. The
- 38:25Speaker 1: adult angler take is called a cut. And so that's
- 38:28Speaker 1: how we divide out. How do you walk me through
- 38:32Speaker 1: your Let's go around the table here. We're gonna skip Seth.
- 38:35Speaker 1: He's a newcomer to the cove, and instead of answering
- 38:38Speaker 1: this question, Seth is gonna give us an update on
- 38:40Speaker 1: the A frame, which has had a dramatic Yeah, I
- 38:44Speaker 1: mean a dramatic recovery. Looking good in there, Yeah.
- 38:48Speaker 10: Ongoing, ongoing recovering right now as we speak in recovery.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Yeah, what's your how do you what's your take? Like?
- 38:55Speaker 1: What are the things you like to make with your cut? Like?
- 38:57Speaker 1: How do you think of your cut? You give it
- 38:59Speaker 1: all away? Do you slowly eat it? What? Do you do.
- 39:01Speaker 2: We usually we usually so it's just me and my wife.
- 39:04Speaker 2: We don't any kids, so we'll usually kind of stretch
- 39:08Speaker 2: it out over the year, usually host to host people,
- 39:13Speaker 2: cook for folks, but a lot of it becomes kind
- 39:15Speaker 2: of just like a protein staple in our house because
- 39:19Speaker 2: my wife doesn't eat meat as you know, red meat,
- 39:21Speaker 2: red meat.
- 39:22Speaker 1: She eats fish, eats.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Fish, and so it just we kind of stretch it
- 39:25Speaker 2: out really through the year.
- 39:26Speaker 1: So the moose meat I gave you, she's not eating that.
- 39:29Speaker 2: That's your own private I'm working my way through that
- 39:32Speaker 2: fifty pounds, and that's.
- 39:33Speaker 1: Your own private Stashy with the fish, he's into.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Fish, he's into and uh, yeah, it's made me a
- 39:39Speaker 2: better It's made me a better cook in the kitchen,
- 39:43Speaker 2: you know. I mean, it helps being buddies with all
- 39:45Speaker 2: you guys, but it's a it's.
- 39:47Speaker 1: It's made me.
- 39:48Speaker 2: I'm more creative than I than I used to be.
- 39:50Speaker 1: What are some of the staples.
- 39:54Speaker 2: Well, some of the things that I've I tried to
- 39:55Speaker 2: emulate out of here. I've I've done some of that
- 39:58Speaker 2: seafood curry.
- 39:59Speaker 1: Have you done the cod?
- 40:01Speaker 2: I have not? Yeah, I have done the I've done
- 40:03Speaker 2: the seafood enchilada yep. And uh. And what I want
- 40:08Speaker 2: this year?
- 40:08Speaker 1: I want to do.
- 40:09Speaker 2: I want to I want to dial in my chowder game,
- 40:11Speaker 2: my seafood chowder game. I haven't really I haven't really
- 40:15Speaker 2: dabbled too much in that. Yeah, we just kind of
- 40:18Speaker 2: stretched out. But also like a lot of hosting, I mean,
- 40:20Speaker 2: people people love it when you know you cook cook
- 40:23Speaker 2: a bunch of halibit that you caught or a part
- 40:25Speaker 2: of catching them, right, There's just a certain charm in
- 40:28Speaker 2: that that people just really love. So that's how we
- 40:32Speaker 2: do it.
- 40:34Speaker 1: What was your uh, what's your highlight from this year?
- 40:38Speaker 7: Uh?
- 40:39Speaker 2: Mechanically putting together that switch.
- 40:44Speaker 1: I need to explain this a little bit. We have
- 40:46Speaker 1: a pot polar and there's a junction box for the switch,
- 40:51Speaker 1: and because it's the saltwater marine environment, they assemble the
- 40:58Speaker 1: wiring and then they inject that box with silicons like
- 41:03Speaker 1: fill it. So when you open it up, you're looking
- 41:06Speaker 1: into what looks like a bar of soap yep, yep.
- 41:09Speaker 1: And contained within that bar of soap when you get
- 41:12Speaker 1: all that picked out of there is the junction. And
- 41:16Speaker 1: then we redid it and repacked.
- 41:18Speaker 7: It and it worked yeah, it's mechanically that and then
- 41:27Speaker 7: I guess fishing, you know, getting into the into the
- 41:32Speaker 7: Pacific cod uh, the last couple of days, that's that's
- 41:36Speaker 7: the hottest ocean fishing I've ever been a part of.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I was I was going to touch on that
- 41:42Speaker 1: because yesterday when Danny and I were out diving around,
- 41:46Speaker 1: I was telling the kids, the boys about how the Plains,
- 41:50Speaker 1: a lot of the planes tribes would have a thing
- 41:53Speaker 1: called a year. They had their own word for it,
- 41:58Speaker 1: a year count or something like that, and it would
- 42:00Speaker 1: take a buffalo hide and the band would they would
- 42:06Speaker 1: mark the most notable things from any year. And I think,
- 42:09Speaker 1: if I'm not mistaken, they would do it in a
- 42:10Speaker 1: concentric a concentric circle. And when you look at these
- 42:14Speaker 1: annual counts, like you'll you'll see smallpox epidemics, you'll also
- 42:20Speaker 1: see something so it'd be like a person with spots
- 42:22Speaker 1: on them. Some of these annual counts have like, uh,
- 42:29Speaker 1: you know, you'd be like, oh that this is like
- 42:30Speaker 1: an early encounter with people that had firearms, early encounter
- 42:34Speaker 1: with white people. And also just like kind of like
- 42:36Speaker 1: weird things like I remember one of them had one
- 42:39Speaker 1: of them was like a year that someone had I
- 42:42Speaker 1: found mistaken. It was like a year that it seemed
- 42:44Speaker 1: like a year that a bunch of buffalo got struck
- 42:46Speaker 1: by lightning. Was like the year that's what happened that year.
- 42:50Speaker 1: And I was saying, I wish from the start we
- 42:52Speaker 1: had made one of those on a big hal of
- 42:54Speaker 1: it hide. That would have been an account yep, right.
- 43:01Speaker 1: And if I was in the most notable thing every year,
- 43:03Speaker 1: I think it'd be finding like one year would have
- 43:07Speaker 1: been finding what turned into like a dramatic shrimp spot,
- 43:11Speaker 1: a profound shrimp spot. This year I would perhaps put
- 43:16Speaker 1: the death of that shrimp spot, but I would probably
- 43:20Speaker 1: this year. Really what would went out in my mind
- 43:21Speaker 1: this year was to be a cod, a big peacod,
- 43:24Speaker 1: because the year we bought this, we caught a giant.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Remember that we didn't know what the hell we're doing.
- 43:31Speaker 1: One of the first things we caught was a huge,
- 43:33Speaker 1: probably a nine pound cod. I got a picture, you're
- 43:37Speaker 1: all glassy eyed standing by that old not that sync
- 43:41Speaker 1: but the previous thing, holding that big ass cod in
- 43:44Speaker 1: your mechanic suit. Yeah, and you'd get them and then
- 43:48Speaker 1: you just didn't. They're gone, I mean gone for what
- 43:51Speaker 1: eight ten years.
- 43:53Speaker 8: It was the twenty fourteen marine heatwave. They just disappeared.
- 43:57Speaker 8: I mean, I think there's like complete reproductive failure and
- 44:00Speaker 8: presumably a lot of the older ones died off, because yeah,
- 44:02Speaker 8: there was what until last nine years. Until last year,
- 44:07Speaker 8: most years we didn't catch a cod. We had three
- 44:09Speaker 8: boats out there fishing every day and we would catch not.
- 44:12Speaker 1: A cod, yep, and then a few not it was
- 44:16Speaker 1: three springs to go started getting dinks and I don't know,
- 44:24Speaker 1: there's I'm sure there's fish moving and all that, sure,
- 44:27Speaker 1: but this year, man, it's just like cod galore and yeah,
- 44:34Speaker 1: and they're not.
- 44:37Speaker 8: They they seem big compared to what we've caught the
- 44:39Speaker 8: last couple of years, but they're they're not big cod yet.
- 44:42Speaker 1: No, but they're keep like yeah keeper fish, yeah, yeah,
- 44:46Speaker 1: but no, they're not they're not like ten pounders.
- 44:48Speaker 8: Yeah, they're certainly worth playing, but I mean they get
- 44:50Speaker 8: bigger three four or five.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Pounds, yeah, gorging on krill and herring. So I think
- 44:57Speaker 1: there's harring eating krill. Yeah you don't. I just saw
- 45:01Speaker 1: that kroll when we were diving yesterday. It's clouds of Yeah, Matt,
- 45:06Speaker 1: you caught herring and then later he caught a cod
- 45:10Speaker 1: that regurgitated a herring and got it. Oh, you caught
- 45:13Speaker 1: a cod that regurgitated a still live hairing. But just
- 45:16Speaker 1: a ton of cod. And and like I was saying earlier,
- 45:20Speaker 1: it's just interesting to get like such a snapshot because
- 45:24Speaker 1: we'll come and fish the same general area at the
- 45:28Speaker 1: same general time over the course of a long time,
- 45:32Speaker 1: and you see these things come in, things come out,
- 45:37Speaker 1: you know, and be like, like, shrimp were fantastic and
- 45:40Speaker 1: right now shrimp just sucks, right, Crabs have highs and lows.
- 45:44Speaker 1: But the cod thing has been is the watching the
- 45:47Speaker 1: cod be here, be gone, be back makes the shrimp
- 45:51Speaker 1: thing less depressing because you picture well may you know,
- 45:55Speaker 1: you like normally in psychologically i'd be like, oh, it's over,
- 45:59Speaker 1: you know, but you get a it's like probably something
- 46:01Speaker 1: will happen and all of a sudden it'll be great
- 46:03Speaker 1: shrimping again. Maybe.
- 46:03Speaker 9: And when those cod we're all catching, like they're they're
- 46:06Speaker 9: various sizes. It's not like there's like one growth class
- 46:09Speaker 9: that's taken over, yeah, or catch the small ones on
- 46:11Speaker 9: up to yeah, we've.
- 46:12Speaker 10: Gotten all like ten inches up to yeah, like twenty
- 46:16Speaker 10: eight inches.
- 46:16Speaker 9: Yeah, like big ones. So it would seem that this would,
- 46:18Speaker 9: you know, barring anything happening, this would last for a while.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Yeah. Seth told me yesterday he's actually glad his house
- 46:26Speaker 1: got hit by a large tree.
- 46:28Speaker 6: Yeah, believe it or not.
- 46:30Speaker 5: Best thing ever happened to me.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Yeah. No, it just exposed all the problems that needed fixed.
- 46:36Speaker 10: And if it didn't do that, we'd be kind of
- 46:38Speaker 10: chipping away at that slowly forever.
- 46:41Speaker 1: We're observing yesterday that Seth bought his A frame at
- 46:45Speaker 1: a very important point in time for that a frame. Yes,
- 46:48Speaker 1: you know when you see a house that's just falling
- 46:51Speaker 1: down and it's just no, like it's beyond repair. Yeah,
- 46:58Speaker 1: if you had waited a year, your A frame would
- 47:01Speaker 1: have become a non salable item. Yeah. No, just especially
- 47:06Speaker 1: when that tree fell on it. Yeah, because he bought
- 47:08Speaker 1: his A frame. And then the porch. I bring us
- 47:11Speaker 1: up all the time, the porch. How high is that
- 47:14Speaker 1: porch off the ground? Thirteen feet? Noah, yeah, maybe eleven
- 47:17Speaker 1: to twelve feet off the ground.
- 47:18Speaker 10: Well, I was sitting there last night and I noticed
- 47:20Speaker 10: how like our porch basically is like level with your
- 47:23Speaker 10: roof over here.
- 47:25Speaker 1: And that porch one day actually fell off. Yep, that
- 47:31Speaker 1: was the first.
- 47:32Speaker 10: That was the first phone call I got from you
- 47:34Speaker 10: with bad news about the place.
- 47:35Speaker 1: You know, there's been several Then a tree fell on
- 47:42Speaker 1: it and just stove it to den. Yeah. And if
- 47:46Speaker 1: you hadn't bought it, it would be you'd look over there
- 47:48Speaker 1: and be like it'd just be another rotten building in Alaska.
- 47:53Speaker 1: But you bought it just in time. It was like
- 47:55Speaker 1: it was like a heart attack victim, you know what
- 47:59Speaker 1: I mean. And right when you hit them with those electrocuters,
- 48:04Speaker 1: Zapp's back the life that was your purchase. Fibulators. Yeah,
- 48:07Speaker 1: your purchase defibrillated that house. Yep. Now we got them
- 48:11Speaker 1: back on a good diet. He's doing all right. Brand
- 48:17Speaker 1: new porch, brand new porch front and back.
- 48:20Speaker 10: Well, the first thing that happens after we bought the place,
- 48:23Speaker 10: the porch fell off. Then we had our buddy Dustin
- 48:27Speaker 10: replace pilings. And I think that's what really saved our
- 48:30Speaker 10: ass when the tree hit the place.
- 48:33Speaker 1: Oh, because it would just.
- 48:34Speaker 10: Because it would have just yeah, the pilings that were
- 48:37Speaker 10: under it, which there's still a bunch that needs replace,
- 48:39Speaker 10: but like the main ones that were bad all got
- 48:43Speaker 10: replaced and they're sitting on these giant crease pilings.
- 48:46Speaker 1: Now that's what the porch is on too.
- 48:49Speaker 10: So but yeah, so we did that and then the
- 48:52Speaker 10: tree hit and then we basically rebuilt dustin our buddy
- 48:58Speaker 10: dust and also rebuilt and and some other guys he
- 49:01Speaker 10: had some help, some other guys help. But yeah, front
- 49:05Speaker 10: and back wall on the A frame, replaced a bunch
- 49:08Speaker 10: of well all the all the choices that got smashed
- 49:12Speaker 10: up when the tree hit.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Fixed that. And then.
- 49:17Speaker 10: We had some skylights in there that were leaking. It's like, no,
- 49:21Speaker 10: never skylights leaking Montana hot and dry. Why would you
- 49:28Speaker 10: put him in a place in southeast Alaska? But yeah, replaced, God,
- 49:32Speaker 10: those replaced and then uh yeah.
- 49:37Speaker 8: Man, when I when I went in when that tree
- 49:39Speaker 8: fell out, you know, I was here. Yeah, I went
- 49:42Speaker 8: up first starters. I was cutting through your lot, you know,
- 49:46Speaker 8: going up deer hunting, and I looked and I'm like, funk,
- 49:50Speaker 8: that don't look right.
- 49:53Speaker 6: I remember that there.
- 49:54Speaker 9: Yeah, why would Seth put a tree in this house?
- 49:58Speaker 8: And I was like, I better better into that on
- 50:00Speaker 8: the way home, you know. So I went out hunted
- 50:03Speaker 8: for the morning and came back. Oh, ship, that is
- 50:06Speaker 8: that is what I was thinking it was you know, yeah,
- 50:09Speaker 8: I sent you that text.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Maybe I sent Steve, I can't remember. But I went
- 50:14Speaker 1: up in.
- 50:15Speaker 8: When I went up in there, you know you had
- 50:16Speaker 8: that bed up in your loft. Yeah, because you didn't
- 50:19Speaker 8: see the tree when it was there. No, no, I
- 50:21Speaker 8: got it out of there. Yeah, there's that. If somebody
- 50:25Speaker 8: was in that bed, they would have been fine. But
- 50:28Speaker 8: that fucking trunk. I mean it was a big hemlock
- 50:31Speaker 8: right diameter of that I don't know, two feet diameter
- 50:34Speaker 8: in that trunk.
- 50:36Speaker 1: It was about a foot off of that bed. I
- 50:41Speaker 1: asked Seth if it would have killed him?
- 50:43Speaker 8: If I can't even imagine if you're late being in
- 50:48Speaker 8: that bed, you couldn't have sat up.
- 50:51Speaker 1: Yeah, you wouldn't have been touched the way. Bring me
- 50:56Speaker 1: a coffee. But yeah, I know.
- 51:00Speaker 10: My my brother in law, Bob, who owns the place
- 51:03Speaker 10: with us, he's over there right now putting up siding.
- 51:06Speaker 1: So you know, the cutest thing I think about it
- 51:08Speaker 1: is that your dad likes coming up so it kind
- 51:10Speaker 1: of like brings your family all nice.
- 51:11Speaker 10: Oh yeah, yeah, my dad loves coming up here. It's
- 51:13Speaker 10: all he talks about every time I talked him on
- 51:15Speaker 10: the phone. He's like, I can't wait for life.
- 51:17Speaker 1: Literally, like just like this.
- 51:20Speaker 10: When he leaves, when he leaves here, or when we
- 51:23Speaker 10: leave here, whatever in a few a week or whatever.
- 51:27Speaker 10: I guarantee you the next phone call he'll be like,
- 51:29Speaker 10: can't wait for Laska next year. That's yeah, he loves it.
- 51:34Speaker 10: But yeah, it's it's when we leave. By the time
- 51:37Speaker 10: we leave, it's going to be a fully functional, rebuilt
- 51:41Speaker 10: cabin with siding and everything.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Yeah, congratulations, thanks, feels good. Over the years, I've said,
- 51:49Speaker 1: over the years has been a lot of people, a
- 51:51Speaker 1: lot of people that talked about maybe buying that a
- 51:54Speaker 1: frame and they would go in there and that would
- 51:56Speaker 1: usually end the conversation. Yeah, you're tougher. Name work. Yeah,
- 52:01Speaker 1: you were tougher. You had more vision and tougherness. Yep, yeah,
- 52:05Speaker 1: it was more toughness. Yeah, it was something I didn't
- 52:08Speaker 1: didn't want to pass up.
- 52:09Speaker 10: You.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Uh, Danny, you eat a hugely heavy seafood diet, and
- 52:13Speaker 1: you because you live in a last you get a
- 52:14Speaker 1: lot of different Uh, this isn't your only seafood run
- 52:20Speaker 1: because you guys are all kind of salmon.
- 52:22Speaker 8: Yeah, I fished a lot of salmon around home and
- 52:24Speaker 8: then Yeah, I have a few friends with boats that
- 52:27Speaker 8: I get out on the ocean waters up in South Central.
- 52:30Speaker 8: You know how the wittier homer belts so takes the
- 52:37Speaker 8: TIXX pressure off.
- 52:38Speaker 1: Do you remember, Uh, we used to like cheese and chongs.
- 52:41Speaker 1: Next movie and somehow his cousin shows up, one of
- 52:47Speaker 1: those guys. His cousin shows up. Remember those army Duffel bags. Yea,
- 52:51Speaker 1: his cousin shows up with the army, those giant army
- 52:54Speaker 1: Duffel bags full of bud. Yeah, and uh, someone asks
- 52:58Speaker 1: him what he's gonna do with it all, and he
- 53:00Speaker 1: says he's gonna smoke some, party with some and sell some.
- 53:04Speaker 1: Give weird a joke. So whenever we caught a lot
- 53:08Speaker 1: of fish, you remember we smoke some party with someone
- 53:11Speaker 1: selling and the selling not so much and they're selling
- 53:21Speaker 1: not at all, but uh anymore, but you definitely smoke something,
- 53:26Speaker 1: party with some.
- 53:27Speaker 9: I thought it was smoke some part of some and
- 53:29Speaker 9: give some to your friends.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Us smoke some party some, give some to your friends.
- 53:36Speaker 1: Well you do with all your fish? Uh, you guys
- 53:43Speaker 1: still dip net and stuff like that.
- 53:44Speaker 8: Then yeah, yeah, I'm kind of missing that right now.
- 53:47Speaker 8: Between uh yeah, being down here and just feel work
- 53:51Speaker 8: for my job and stuff. So yeah, I don't. I
- 53:54Speaker 8: don't have a salmon plan this year. I need to
- 53:56Speaker 8: figure something out when I get back home to get
- 53:58Speaker 8: some salmon in the freezer because they're pretty scarce around
- 54:01Speaker 8: here at this moment. But yeah, I already did some halibit.
- 54:06Speaker 8: I already have a bunch of halibit in cod in
- 54:08Speaker 8: the freezer. So how do you sequence it out?
- 54:11Speaker 1: Because I find that, Sam and you gotta get like
- 54:14Speaker 1: I get, there's certain stuff I just eat or give
- 54:16Speaker 1: away right away, Like a salmon, you either gotta do
- 54:20Speaker 1: something with it, like in a year. It's not fun.
- 54:22Speaker 8: Nope, Nope. I like to have all that gone by
- 54:25Speaker 8: next spring. Oh and all this cod that we're getting,
- 54:29Speaker 8: I mean, that's gotta be gone in the next I
- 54:32Speaker 8: don't know, six months.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Is about this limit on that in your freezer?
- 54:35Speaker 8: It's a leather yeah yeah, but halibut, man, you can
- 54:38Speaker 8: let that alib it sit for a couple of years
- 54:40Speaker 8: and hardly tell the difference.
- 54:44Speaker 1: You know what. I don't know if you remember the story,
- 54:47Speaker 1: you and me were up here, and it was when
- 54:49Speaker 1: I was staying in your guest house and we were
- 54:55Speaker 1: up here and we were like bringing a bunch of
- 54:58Speaker 1: halibit home. I mean, for some reason put it into
- 55:01Speaker 1: a dry bag, yeah, a rubberized dry bag, and then
- 55:05Speaker 1: I don't know what how we did with it, brought
- 55:07Speaker 1: it home, all of our frozen hal but in a
- 55:09Speaker 1: rubber dry bag in a cooler or something. Back to anchor.
- 55:13Speaker 1: You were an an and uh, time goes by and
- 55:22Speaker 1: that your gear room just it's so like you can't
- 55:29Speaker 1: It's one of those you know, like when you hear
- 55:31Speaker 1: there's certain noises, like when you hear a turkey going right,
- 55:36Speaker 1: or when you hear a blue grouse doing his noise,
- 55:45Speaker 1: Like you know it's there, but you can't tell what direction.
- 55:47Speaker 1: It was a smell that it was like, it was
- 55:49Speaker 1: a smell. It was like a turkey drummond. You know
- 55:52Speaker 1: it's there, but you can't. It's hard to pinpoint the direction.
- 55:55Speaker 1: And you just come in the house and you'd be
- 55:57Speaker 1: like what, Yeah, my gear room was also my boiler room,
- 56:01Speaker 1: so that's really warm. We narrow in on it's something
- 56:04Speaker 1: in the gear room. Yeah, and we systematically emptied out
- 56:09Speaker 1: I don't know if you remember this. We systematically emptied out
- 56:11Speaker 1: the gear room yeah, No, couldn't figure out what had
- 56:16Speaker 1: died there. We thought something died there. We didn't know
- 56:18Speaker 1: what emptied out the gear room. Put everything back. The
- 56:22Speaker 1: smell gets worse the second time. We do, like a
- 56:26Speaker 1: more thorough examination. Realized that, like in that rubber dry bag,
- 56:33Speaker 1: when someone emptied out the rubber dry bag, they left
- 56:36Speaker 1: one pack of a halibit in that rubber dry bag,
- 56:41Speaker 1: and that's what was the culprit. And so when you're
- 56:43Speaker 1: searching the room, you just pick up a dry bag
- 56:45Speaker 1: and it doesn't weigh Yeah, and an extra that was
- 56:49Speaker 1: a nasty pack of halibit. Man.
- 56:53Speaker 10: Speaking of noises where you can't tell where they're coming from,
- 56:56Speaker 10: we're over here fishing salmon yesterday and we get there's
- 57:00Speaker 10: like sam and jumping all over the place closer to
- 57:02Speaker 10: the bank or back of there. So we kind of
- 57:04Speaker 10: like slowly put over there, shut the engine off. And
- 57:06Speaker 10: you can hear a bear up in the woods snapping
- 57:09Speaker 10: its jaws at us. Oh, just like popping them, you know,
- 57:12Speaker 10: like the town they make when they're popping their jaws.
- 57:14Speaker 10: Just up there, popping its jaws like crazy.
- 57:17Speaker 1: That's cool. Couldn't see it, but you could hear it.
- 57:19Speaker 1: Like that distinct sound. Yeah, because otherwise I would say
- 57:23Speaker 1: in my year count blanket. Another option here would be
- 57:26Speaker 1: the year of no bears. There's a soal of two
- 57:29Speaker 1: cubs that's hanging it out over here. Oh okay, because
- 57:32Speaker 1: they're not like running around trying.
- 57:33Speaker 10: To no in the spring when we're hearing the spring
- 57:36Speaker 10: bear hunting. They were everywhere just because they come to
- 57:39Speaker 10: the covid come to covide A, wait them.
- 57:41Speaker 1: Yeah, they know it's a safe place. Yeah, No one's
- 57:45Speaker 1: gonna get them, all right.
- 57:46Speaker 8: There's a story I always tell about my kids being
- 57:49Speaker 8: out flipping the rocks and just playing in the inner
- 57:51Speaker 8: title zone out here, and I came out on this
- 57:54Speaker 8: is well, yeah, I think we're getting a little break
- 57:56Speaker 8: from the bears. The last couple of years it just
- 57:58Speaker 8: seemed to be less abundant. But yeah, when they used
- 57:59Speaker 8: to always be hanging around on the beach. I remember
- 58:01Speaker 8: walking on this porch and my kids were young man
- 58:05Speaker 8: like maybe three and five or something like that, and
- 58:07Speaker 8: they're out there playing in the flats and I said, hey, guys,
- 58:13Speaker 8: just letting you know it was a bear behind you,
- 58:15Speaker 8: And they didn't even turn around to look at it.
- 58:19Speaker 8: Doing what they were doing like they're just so used
- 58:21Speaker 8: to it.
- 58:21Speaker 1: I got a picture in one of my kids on
- 58:24Speaker 1: a rope swing that I took that that was video
- 58:29Speaker 1: like rope basically rope swinging like out over. And I
- 58:33Speaker 1: got another one of my older boy in his underwear
- 58:36Speaker 1: shooting a slingshot at one it's like up in the
- 58:38Speaker 1: like up by the table there, you know.
- 58:40Speaker 8: Oh yeah, Matt DROs just just gave me a photo
- 58:43Speaker 8: that I did not know existed of me hitting a
- 58:45Speaker 8: bear with a rock that was causing us some troubles.
- 58:50Speaker 1: All right, Matt, so uh your cut. We'll give me
- 58:53Speaker 1: your most memorable Danny got to your most memorable things
- 58:56Speaker 1: from this year?
- 58:56Speaker 8: How you'll remember the year? Yeah, I guess that would be. Yeah,
- 59:01Speaker 8: get peacod coming back? Oh in that great data link
- 59:05Speaker 8: cod fishing with with fits and was the boat with us?
- 59:11Speaker 8: Uh Rosemary? Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's that's just
- 59:18Speaker 8: the link hod bite was just on and maybe I
- 59:20Speaker 8: don't know if the tide was moving real good and
- 59:22Speaker 8: we just timed it right.
- 59:23Speaker 2: And yeah, a bunch of duskies, a bunch of silver rays.
- 59:27Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that was some pretty intense fishing, man. That's great.
- 59:30Speaker 1: It was one of the things you learned over the
- 59:32Speaker 1: years of going to fishing the same thing all the time,
- 59:36Speaker 1: is uh, you learned like some general trends and rules
- 59:39Speaker 1: and stuff, but we've accumulated a ton of you know,
- 59:42Speaker 1: but you also learned there's just things you can't explain
- 59:46Speaker 1: like that. You remember one time seth in the spring.
- 59:49Speaker 1: We were on a particular feature over by where we
- 59:51Speaker 1: set trimp pot sometimes and dropped out was like silver
- 59:58Speaker 1: grays and duskies and stuff. I've been back to three
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: times since nothing happens. It's like some current thing, some
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: food thing, and you'll never replicate it. Yeah, you know,
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: and you can go out and yeah, I don't know
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: the moodiness of fish man. Yeah.
- 1:00:14Speaker 8: Another one of those changes was, you know, more long term,
- 1:00:17Speaker 8: was just the disappearance of those twenty arm starfish. You know,
- 1:00:20Speaker 8: every shrimp pot used to have one or two of
- 1:00:22Speaker 8: those in it, and then that blight came through and
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: all the star sea stars died off. And I mean,
- 1:00:27Speaker 8: I haven't seen one of those things in years, and
- 1:00:30Speaker 8: I don't know if it's a coincidence or not. But
- 1:00:32Speaker 8: then octopus got real abundant for a while or right
- 1:00:36Speaker 8: after the seastars died off.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:00:38Speaker 8: And then you know, yeah, we had a few years
- 1:00:40Speaker 8: where it wouldn't I mean most most years, I would say,
- 1:00:45Speaker 8: you know, in a week of hardcore shrimp and you
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: might get an octopus. And then there was a year
- 1:00:50Speaker 8: where we get like one or two a day, or
- 1:00:53Speaker 8: for a few years.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: You remember Ron Layton, you'd pull every shrimp pot to
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: have a bunch of those on it in it and
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: Ron Layton would make you put them on a bucket. Yeah,
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: so he could move him out of his So you're
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: somehow like you're somehow going to get him out of
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: the areas Like I don't know, we saw sixty today,
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: you think that's the only sixty dollars, But yeah, those
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: things aren't around anymore. That's another big, huge change over time.
- 1:01:22Speaker 8: And and then the yeah, I don't know, the octopus
- 1:01:25Speaker 8: seem at least by you know, from our trapping less
- 1:01:28Speaker 8: abundant in the last couple of years.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: And they only said he's getting out pus almost every day.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Oh really, really where he's trimping, he cleans them or
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: pitches him, pitches him. Does he do because he thinks
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: they're so smart? Because he doesn't want to deal with him.
- 1:01:43Speaker 10: Well, when I was talking to him, I was like,
- 1:01:45Speaker 10: I was like, oh, I love eating those things, and
- 1:01:47Speaker 10: he's like really, and I was like yeah. He's like, well,
- 1:01:49Speaker 10: if I get one, I'll bring it to you.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: Okay. So not because they're so smart. I think he
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: just doesn't because a lot of people quit because they're smart. Yeah,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: we got hot onto that documentary. But yeahs teacher bestly
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: never happened to octopuses. But like I said, I've said
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: it before, I don't know that everything else is that dumb.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: That's true.
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: Nobody's befriended the halibate.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Yet if you went ahong all the halb it, you
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: might wind up being not one to eat them either.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: That it might be a substitute teacher, my teacher. So
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: Matt hit me with your most memorable for the year.
- 1:02:29Speaker 9: I was just trying to think there's been so many,
- 1:02:31Speaker 9: Like I want to someone that has just been a
- 1:02:34Speaker 9: smooth year, like like mechanical, like weatherwise, unbelievable.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: We got one mystery. One mechanical mystery is uh, the
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: one of the motors not charging it's bat and it's
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: not the charging fids but minor.
- 1:02:49Speaker 9: Yeah, but the cod was it's crazy. I mean, the
- 1:02:52Speaker 9: three of us are out and there was a point
- 1:02:54Speaker 9: where we had triple headers numerous times you wouldn't put
- 1:02:58Speaker 9: down without bringing up a fish. And that's just you know, yeah,
- 1:03:01Speaker 9: that's pretty pretty amazing.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Fishion just steady this year.
- 1:03:05Speaker 8: Usually it's like you got one or two days that
- 1:03:08Speaker 8: where you bringing ninety percent of the catch when it's
- 1:03:11Speaker 8: just odd, you know. And this year it was just
- 1:03:13Speaker 8: kind of every.
- 1:03:14Speaker 9: Day was we came in yesterday with I don't know
- 1:03:16Speaker 9: three hal of it and probably ten cod, and we're like, man, yeah, I.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: Mean any other year we'd have been oh man, what
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: we got. It was just it was crazy.
- 1:03:25Speaker 7: Uh.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: There's a there's a thing from up here we find
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: is there's like a running joke that if you're if
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: someone's coming up, oh yeah, yeah, if you're getting if
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: you're coming up in a few days, the best thing
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: you could hear is that the fishing sucks. Before I
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: came up, I didn't want to text anybody. I did
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: not want to hear because, like the joke is, if
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: the fishing's good in a couple of days, it won't
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: be right. And so you want to make sure that
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: right before like three days before you show up, you
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: want to hear that it's a miserable bite and then
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: you're like, well, mathematically that means it's gonna be hot
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: when I get there, because it comes in like days
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: on days off days, and it's not it's not it's
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: not lunar, it's not a thirty day roll. It's a
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: much it's like a smaller role, and no one's been
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: able to identify it. I think if we had over
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: time been really meticulous about moon phase, moon phase, slash,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: tide swing, I don't know what, I don't know what
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: all inputs would you put in the wind whatever. If
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: we had made some kind of chart, and it could
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: be as simple as like you fill in five or
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: six variables and then rate the days fishing on a
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: one to ten or something, you might start putting together
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: what it is. But it's not sun, and it's not
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: high wind, low wind. It's not all those things that
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: you remember the day by. It's like it's like the
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: things that you it's you knows the things you don't remember.
- 1:05:02Speaker 9: Well, right, well, yesterday we had that day that we're fishing,
- 1:05:05Speaker 9: we had that that current was ripping and then for
- 1:05:08Speaker 9: like five minutes it stopped and everything was straight down
- 1:05:12Speaker 9: and then I looked into something huge.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: It got off and then it started ripping again and
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: it just changed everything. Bathing could have been coming by. Yeah,
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: energy for attack, that's what that was. No, it's so
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: much mystery. Oh and then you guys for the first
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: time another thing that like we always know one was around.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Who saw the salmon shark?
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: It was last last year. That was last year, you.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: Know, I you had to lay eyes on one.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: It was the classic kind of shark fin and the
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: tail tip of the tail just kind of going by
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: like Jaws. It was probably what.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: We just kind of happened to turn around.
- 1:05:48Speaker 9: We all saw it like just swimming by, heading towards
- 1:05:50Speaker 9: you guys.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: She was all hot. Another thing about like freak deals.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: So seeing the salmon shark like all that time, and
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: then you look at there was many many years there
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: was never a sea otter. Yeah, fifteen years of no
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: sea otters, and then now there's the occasional seaatter sighting.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: The neighbor is out one day and they have like
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: a what in the world is that? And it was
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: a I mean it looked like a several hundred pound
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: oceanic sunfish. Yeah, oh, coming along the surface and just
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: kind of went right under their boat. And then he
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: took a cell phone video and that fish. He took
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: a cell phone video as it's going under the boat,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: and that fish just keeps coming and coming and coming
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: and coming as it goes by on to the boat.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: I think they've never seen another one. I think that
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: was twenty fourteen marine heat wave. It was that summer. Yeah, yep, yeah, yeah,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: just like the one offs, you know, the one off
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: weird things.
- 1:06:46Speaker 10: That's what I love about this place. It's like you'd
- 1:06:47Speaker 10: never know what you're going to see up here, really, you.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: Never you never know what you're never gonna see again.
- 1:06:52Speaker 10: Yeah, and every year it's like something different you see
- 1:06:55Speaker 10: or catcher.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: It's cool. Any most memorable whatever commentary around.
- 1:07:03Speaker 6: Oh you know where this is gone.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: You're a new griddle. So if you were making a
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: year count, your year count would be your giant Riddle pancakes.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: So like, okay, griddle after grill.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: And has in our circle, how many years you've been here?
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: Sixteenth straight sixteen straight years? He because he deals not
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: only in except food of exceptional quality, but he deals
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: in food of exceptional quantity. And every year his gift
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: to our friend circle is it. He makes the shopping list,
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: comes in in the morning, turns on coffee at six,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: makes a breakfast like a good breakfast, facilitates the making
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: of lunch, and then at night cooks usually fresh seafood,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: sometimes the stuff we bring from home. Cooks everybody a huge,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: high quality dinner. They just run through the list of
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: meals we had. Yeah, like seafood we had because the
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: first night here we hadn't caught nothing yet, so we had,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: uh marin earra and meatballs left. Or for my birthday party,
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: the meat the bag of meat was left. Or for
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: my birthday party. Uh chowder, No, you haven't done chowder
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: yet yet. Seafood enchiladas, cod like fried Coddle's law, curry
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: seafood curry. Uh what else?
- 1:08:33Speaker 5: Oh, welled salmon, that whole slash king salmon on his
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: new thing hits some tacos fish tacos.
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: Anyways, he normally has the work in a ton of
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: little pans set on a little stove, but this year
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: he bought a giant outdoor griddle and now can just.
- 1:08:49Speaker 5: Like, oh, hang with high life, quality of life up here.
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: It's just dramatically because I can do it all at once.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: And you can hang out getting it. Yeah, that's a
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: question to the kid.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: A lot of times I'm in here as the kids
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: are getting a fire going on a seventy degree day,
- 1:09:08Speaker 5: over four burners in it of it and they're just dripping.
- 1:09:12Speaker 6: So now be outside hanging out.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:16Speaker 9: Yeah, you should have a picture of Andy stand over
- 1:09:18Speaker 9: there and he's got that kind of wide I look
- 1:09:20Speaker 9: on his face.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: Just wiping this round. Yeah, we know. I was gonna
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: tell you guys, there's enough to do that anything we're
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: talking about. But you know how I keep wanting to
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: tell people about this. Uh, you guys know what geo
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: cashes are. You know what everybody does? A geocash uses
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: an animal can. Yeah, because it's like real Comedy's an
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: army animal can for geocash. So my kids have just
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: found not even using GPS, they somehow have found two geocachhes.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: They found one near when we hunt Spring Turkey and Wisconsin,
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: we always go. Bubby Dog always takes this cheese place
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: down the road. It makes cheese car Valley cheese. We
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: going down here to get kurds and they're like running
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: around the woods there and they find an ammal can
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: and they opened up and full of all the garbage.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: It's in a geocash thing, including a notepad. There's a
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: nurse spot where we can't. They just happen to find
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: a geocache can, and they always putting junk in there
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: and taking it out. So my boy, my little boy
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: has only ever seen an army can in context of
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: a geocash. Two times I have heard him accuse people
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: of having stole a geoc cash box because they have
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: in their possession an army.
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: He took the he took the geo cash box.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: I'm like, no, no, man, those have always been around,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: you know. No, it's a geocash box.
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: Got uh?
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: And then how do you handle your fish and what
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: your uh? When you go home?
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: You make the same things there, uh, you know, the
- 1:10:58Speaker 5: day to day pull out fish and make for myself.
- 1:11:02Speaker 5: But uh, you know, I tend to find myself in
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: social situations with a lot of people looking to have
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: a good time. And much like this place, I tend
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: to find myself cooking a bunch. So I party with it,
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: you know, smoke some, I smoke some party with some.
- 1:11:19Speaker 6: No, I share it around for sure, I give.
- 1:11:21Speaker 5: I'll give a fair bit away too, you know, because
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: I do catch a little bit of fish where I'm
- 1:11:26Speaker 5: at as well.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: So my fir when I go home, that one of
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: my first things when I go home is I give
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: fish to my neighbors, meaning like the houses by my house.
- 1:11:39Speaker 5: Yeah, so anytime there's there's a big get together, Yeah,
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: it's pretty fun to be able to show up with
- 1:11:44Speaker 5: a lot of fresh fish or fresh caught fish and
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: share it around. That's kind of the best part. Tell
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: the stories as you go, you know. But yeah, it
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: lasts me the whole you know, especially being up here
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: for a couple of weeks to come home with a
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: fair bit it'll it'll last the whole year. I think
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: I got a few packs from last year that I'm
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: just gonna get through right as I get home and
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: maybe change the date and pass those out.
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: Let me tell you, let me tell you hot to.
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: I don't date anything anymore because when you date it,
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: it starts people start being prejudiced against it, even when
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: I'm out of town. So if I'm out of town
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: right and someone at home, they're like, once you put
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: the dates on there, they're wondering about it.
- 1:12:30Speaker 6: You're locked in.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: Yeah, they're like, oh, that's from. I don't put any
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: date on anything, man, I when I look, I know
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: when it's from, because like, oh that's from. I know,
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: but no one needs to know. And when I give
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: someone a pack it of something, I don't need them
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: wondering about it. Yeah, you know what I mean, because
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: like a piece of deer meat. I mean, this is
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: a controversial statement. A piece of deer meat that's been
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: saran wrapped and freezer paper wrapped and kept in a
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: deep freeze for two years ain't no different than a
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: piece of deer meat in three months. It just isn't,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: I agree. Different. Now we're not saying the same thing
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: about the salmon.
- 1:13:02Speaker 8: I didn't find the limit on red meat though I
- 1:13:04Speaker 8: came across.
- 1:13:05Speaker 10: Uh.
- 1:13:06Speaker 8: I came across the roast that had been in my freezer.
- 1:13:10Speaker 8: I don't know how I missed it, man, because I'm
- 1:13:12Speaker 8: really diligent about managing my freezer. But I found a
- 1:13:16Speaker 8: piece of meat that was five years old. Something had happened. Yeah,
- 1:13:20Speaker 8: I just lost track of it, you know, No, I
- 1:13:21Speaker 8: mean something had happened to it. Oh oh yeah, so yeah,
- 1:13:25Speaker 8: I did a fool proof roast recipe. You know, I
- 1:13:31Speaker 8: just put I put some rub on it, and I
- 1:13:33Speaker 8: seared it in the pan and popped it in the
- 1:13:35Speaker 8: oventil it's like one hundred and twenty in the middle,
- 1:13:37Speaker 8: and pulled it out, let it cool and siced it
- 1:13:38Speaker 8: up and it looked great. But it like the muscle structure,
- 1:13:41Speaker 8: it just like was mushy and it just didn't it
- 1:13:45Speaker 8: was gross. You know, five years got it?
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: Yeah, So what you should do is go in and
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: label them five years later, eat now from the future.
- 1:13:56Speaker 6: One thing I do, yeah.
- 1:13:57Speaker 11: Eat yeah, eat bye, best consumed and mark it out
- 1:14:02Speaker 11: five years four years. Yeah, because when you look at it,
- 1:14:05Speaker 11: when you look at some old ass can that you
- 1:14:07Speaker 11: found out your cab and it doesn't say when they
- 1:14:09Speaker 11: made it, this is when you should.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: Eat it by it. Yeah, that's a new way to date.
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: One thing I do when I'm unpacking, too, is any
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: of the seals that have.
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: Popped, I go back and reseal and I'll.
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: Tell you when you reseal a frozen piece of fish
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: gets tight.
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: Yeah. That's a good tip. When I get home, invariably
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: you got bat bags that. Yeah. I have a bunch
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: of different theories out. My latest theory is something about
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: being in the cargo hold. Oh for sure, in the
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: air the cargo hold in the airplane does something to
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: back like it ruins a lot of seals on back bags.
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: I just cut it open. I cut the top off
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: and stick the bag right into a bag and resapp
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: and oh you keep.
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: You don't even get rid of the bag, so you
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: reseal it in the bag.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: This was let's say this was a back bag. I
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: would just go with a pair of scissors and slide
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: it into a bag. A lot of times the label
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: shows right, you don't even need to relabel it, but
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: you don't label it. No, I'd label what it is.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: I want to know what it is. I know when
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: it's from names and no names, but not date this
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: year with my cut, I'm gonna do something that I
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: tried a long time ago. But I tried it with
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: some fish that have gotten skanky, Like like I had
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: some cod, a big cod from long million years ago.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: I had a big cod that got to the point
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: where I was like, eh, you know, you know you
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: don't want to open it up. You know when you
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: open it up. Another thing about long term fish freeze
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: and get the skin off Oh yeah, yeah, I've been
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: pretty good about that. If you want it, if you're
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: gonna if you're not gonna eat at megafresh, skin it
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: except for salmon, then you gotta scrape and wash it.
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: You gotta get slam off. Like yesterday I was playing
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: I was playing a king that Luisa caught, and you
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: were saying, scrape. Oh, I forgot it helps a ton
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: and you just scrape all that slam off. I then
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: once you said it, I kind of took my I
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: scraped and took my rubber glove in the hose and
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: just washed him till he was like sand, you know
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: what I mean. Almost kind of a lot of the
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: scales came off. I was cleaning it. So good to
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: get all that slam off because we used to skin
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: we used to freeze hal but skin on not good.
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: Not scraped, Well that's you've got a lot. Yeah, it
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: even turns brown like the not good skank to link.
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: Oh yeah, some link gets skanky. Last year you're an
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: orange slimy. Yeah, it got real bad.
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: It all starts here. You really have to scrape and
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: wash them. Slime it transfers down the line.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: Another long term freezing thing is on your shrimp when
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: you hit them. You got to clean that mm hmm.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: You gotta clean that little uh that junction all because
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: I think he's get when you tear it, it get
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: some kind of digestive fluid from the little orange wash
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: that not you pull that shrimp out and that turns
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: brown that face. But the more you remember how long
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: ron late and to make you wash them for it? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: he's like you'd be out there like an hour and
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: wash the shrimp. Yeah, clockwise clockwise. That's the wrong way.
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: I don't don't swirl the counter.
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: A lot of people that freeze them in water. We
- 1:17:16Speaker 5: don't have that luxury here because you don't want to
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: lug all that weight. Well, actually vacuum see them in
- 1:17:22Speaker 5: so they're just in a block of ice.
- 1:17:24Speaker 6: I can picture that, and they hold.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: Up pretty good. But t s they don't like that
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: either water. Uh. Anyway, I tried to support what I
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: was trying to get to is salt cod. So I
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: tried to make salt cod with a piece of cod
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: that was already of questionable. Uh date this year, I'm
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: going to go home immediately and make some I'm gonna
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: go home immediately and make take my cod and make
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: a bunch of salt cod. But I can then re
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: you know, do like the French salt cod preparation.
- 1:17:50Speaker 5: Yeah, that's an old, old before refrigeration.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, and then you and I. But I used
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: to order that, like in restaurants in New York. I
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: used to order the salt cod.
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: Run run dot or like a yeah, it's kind of
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: what is it like mix it with mashed potatoes.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: It was an old you bring it back, yeah, you
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: kind of bring it back to life. Or you had
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: a song. Now that it's the year of the cod,
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: I'm gonna, yeah, try some salt cod.
- 1:18:15Speaker 9: I was gonna point out because I was how I
- 1:18:17Speaker 9: what I ended up doing usually my catch Just how
- 1:18:19Speaker 9: important like this whole process and trip is to like
- 1:18:22Speaker 9: friends and everybody, Like I'm getting texts while I'm here,
- 1:18:25Speaker 9: like house of Shrimp this year.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: Just like yeahs you know that's a bad one you liked,
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: but yeah, the idea, like it's definitely.
- 1:18:34Speaker 9: Like we host a ton of parties and just it's
- 1:18:37Speaker 9: all stuff from here in.
- 1:18:39Speaker 5: The Northern Northern Mission community. How the fishing in southeast
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: is Yeah.
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: Exactly, they know they know because of this trip.
- 1:18:46Speaker 9: So yeah, it's a we do a lot of just
- 1:18:48Speaker 9: hosting parties and yeah, so it'll be good.
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: Well, I want to thank you guys for doing this.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: Man goes it out saying and that's generally how in
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: our circle, I think everything goes without saying just how
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: much I have appreciated over all these years, the way
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: that uh, you guys have been so faithful about coming
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: up and hanging out. Thanks for sharing it. Man, it's
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: a place. One of the smartest things, one of the
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: smartest dumb things we ever did, is to uh buy
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: a place and have like a little hangout. But it
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: means so much. You guys come up all the time.
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: Oh man, and you know it's corny but true. Man,
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: be'st part about this place is just the fellowship. It's
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: being with you all. Oh yeah, it's the best thing
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: about it.
- 1:19:34Speaker 9: Make a joke about watching that floatplane leave after we
- 1:19:37Speaker 9: get here, like, oh, okay, now the year starts.
- 1:19:41Speaker 5: And we were conversation yesterday about just how so many
- 1:19:45Speaker 5: people on the outside, you know, friends at home always
- 1:19:49Speaker 5: you kind of trying to describe this place, but there's
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: there's never a conversation that you can really express what
- 1:19:57Speaker 5: happens up here.
- 1:19:57Speaker 6: You know what I mean, the.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: Day to day that well, that way understands it.
- 1:20:01Speaker 5: Sitting down at dinner and all three boats are sharing
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: stories about yeah, the one offs and we saw this
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: and and just yeah.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: The camarade.
- 1:20:08Speaker 5: You cannot explain this to people that have never experienced it.
- 1:20:12Speaker 5: It just doesn't transfer to to you know, relate that
- 1:20:16Speaker 5: kind of information and.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: Any amount of work too.
- 1:20:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:20:20Speaker 9: Yeah, the highs and lows of you know, we first
- 1:20:21Speaker 9: got here, all right, first day out, and like three
- 1:20:24Speaker 9: boats leave and we didn't get out of the cove.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: Oh it's like size and highs and lows to the mask.
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: Somebody's back of the chack cleaned up mink ship. Yeah
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: we get. We get instead of a mouse infestation, we
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: get an annual mank infestation.
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: They're getting crafty too.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: Well. I think I think we got to figure out
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: what's going on. I cleaned up some stuff in here
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: in the spring. That guy, I think, yeah, he he
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: went around the mink barrier. It's a whole long story.
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: It might be. I think it's ain. We've had pine
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: Martin two. Yeah, come in. Yeah, all right, Well, thank
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: you guys, thank you, thank you for sharing. Thanks everybody
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: see us next time. M hm.
- 1:21:12Speaker 12: Hm it was October mon old squirrels and vacon.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: For me, m.
- 1:21:38Speaker 13: H it was a reddle watching the time he clutched
- 1:22:02Speaker 13: it through pitch Seth blind always sees what times. But
- 1:22:18Speaker 13: we're locked in because he is not. The treat isn't read.
- 1:22:32Speaker 12: Tearing, it boats too.
- 1:22:39Speaker 13: What we need is all the night shows the story
- 1:22:48Speaker 13: it all. Man wonders, how much.
- 1:23:03Speaker 14: Can't it say, seethe and rod and feed and frass
- 1:23:08Speaker 14: until its other lads, it didn't happen.
- 1:23:17Speaker 13: All it teases time strimmer for my fire, make a
- 1:23:24Speaker 13: bellow for my wine.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: All we see is what.
- 1:23:34Speaker 14: Signs as God. We like in, but he's not.
- 1:23:45Speaker 13: The streeters in what read while.
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: Signing a falls to the mind. What we need is a.
- 1:24:02Speaker 14: Nights trusts the story In all.
- 1:24:50Speaker 12: She lends her fragrance as a cut into her rings.
- 1:24:56Speaker 12: It's telling me a story that the I didn't know.
- 1:25:01Speaker 7: A scene
